American Celebrates America Need A Vehicle? No American Heritage Bank continues tradition of celebrating Independence Day in Sapulpa.

Credit? No Problem.

By Christopher Davis

In honor of Independence Day, American Heritage Bank presents the 18th annual fireworks show in Sapulpa on Friday, July 4. For most, July 4th tradition involves friends, family and lots of food, capped off with a fireworks display. Folks in every town make an annual pilgrimage to their local fireworks show, toting blankets, coolers, snacks and a radio while contemplating the freedom that characterizes our nation. For Sapulpans, a trek toward the Municipal Golf Course will be rewarded with one of the finest shows in the region, thanks to American Heritage Bank. “People look forward to seeing the show, and we work hard to give it to them,” says Sarah

A Concrete Solution LCI Concrete is your turnkey professional for replacing deteriorating driveways. By Duane Blankenship

Kalan Paul and LCI Concrete provide replacement driveways for homeowners. “We pride ourselves on completing every turnkey project to the satisfaction of our customers,” he says. “Most area driveways deteriorate due to the harshness of our Oklahoma winters and the measures taken to remove snow and ice.” LCI Concrete specializes in pouring, scoring and polishing concrete driveways and has served the greater Tulsa area for nearly ten years.

If you’re considering a new concrete driveway, here are some things Kalan advises becoming aware of: Make sure you’re dealing with a reputable company that has general liability and workman’s comprehensive insurance. You don’t want to be held liable for expenses resulting from an accident. Find a contractor who has been in business for at least one year. Never pay for work in advance. You might wake up and find that your contractor has “left Dodge”

and cannot be reached. Get a written quote listing exactly what work will be done, a materials list with specifications and how long it will take to complete the project. This is your insurance that acceptable quality and standards are met. It’s also good to check to see that the contractor is a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. A reputable concrete contractor will mention the word “rebar” without your having to ask because steel reinforce-

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

DIVORCE: IF IT’S TIME TO GO... GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Divorce can be very overwhelming. You need reliable information before you make any decisions. Surround yourself with a team of supportive folks including a reliable attorney, financial advisor, therapist, clergy, and friends. While in the early stages of decision making and grief over the loss of your marriage, it can be challenging to think clearly. Several times a year I witness the sad outcome of what happens when folks go through a divorce unprepared. Here are a few things to think about regarding the cost of divorce and how assets may be divided depending on your situation. According to divorce and mediation attorney Laura Baysinger, the average cost of an uncontested, agreed upon divorce in Oklahoma is $1,500-$1,800. The cost of a contested, litigated divorce usually starts at $15,000 per party and up. The cost of a mediated divorce varies depending on how many hours of mediation is required, but the average is $800 with a filing fee of $198. In an interview with Baysinger, she stated that in Oklahoma, assets and liabilities are divided equitable but not necessarily equally (50-50). Investment accounts, IRA/401k accounts, pensions, the cash value of whole life insurance

policies, businesses, homes, and other assets are counted as part of the marital estate. Liabilities are also counted. After all of these items are taken into account the marital assets may be divided equitably. Accounts held separately throughout the marriage that were attained before the marriage began, inherited and gifted money, and assets that were never co-mingled may not be counted in the marital estate. The following are Four Financial Tips for Folks Considering Divorce: 1) Get Informed. Gather all the documents pertaining to your assets and liabilities: account statements, mortgage balance, credit card balance, IRA and 401k values, any loans against 401ks, brokerage statements, student loans, etc. From these documents create a balance sheet to show what you own and what you owe. 2) Review Joint IRS tax returns for the past 3 years. Your

returns will report your annual marital income, whether it came from salary, bonuses, interest, dividends, and property or partnership income. 3) If you are a stay-at-home mom, be sure to calculate your worth. Just because you don’t earn outside income, doesn’t mean you don’t bring added value to the household budget. List every activity you do that saves the household money (i.e.: cooking, transporting kids, grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning the house, etc.). Calculate what it would cost to hire someone outside the family to do each task and then add up the dollar amount. 4) Make a list of your family’s current monthly household expenses and create a mock budget. Include food, insurance, mortgage, electric, car payment, etc. Next, you will need to do some homework to figure out your “after divorce” anticipated budget. Remember, get your ducks in a row! Goodwill Recognizes Annual Award Recipients

Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrates a year of accomplishments. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment and envisions a community where all people have the training and opportunities they need to be successful in the workplace. Goodwill President David Oliver said, “We strive to meet the highest standards of ethics and account-

ability while treating all people with dignity and respect.” The organization embraces diversity in the individuals they serve, the programs they offer and among the workforce that makes up the Goodwill organization. “We provide services that help people help themselves,” added Oliver. On May 6, 2014, Goodwill celebrated the 2013 accomplishments at the annual Awards

Luncheon. Over 650 employees, clients, board members, community leaders and other business partners and friends of Goodwill joined in the celebration at Southern Hills Marriott Hotel. Award presentations were made by Kristin Dickerson, evening news anchor, KTUL. Kelsey O’Halloran received the Employee of the Year Award. Kelsey is a donation attendant at

the 38th and Harvard location. She greets donors with a wonderful smile, helps take donations into the work site, and is always willing to lend a helping hand and offer a kind word. Kelsey has been a guest speaker at National Conference Sessions for the Williams Syndrome Association, was nominated Oklahoma Special Olympics “Athlete of the Year” and lit the torch at the Opening Ceremonies. Kelsey was also an ambassador for Oklahoma Special Olympics and served on the local chapter of Tulsa People First. Abigail Abate was recognized as Achiever of the Year. Before moving to Tulsa, she developed a school district tutoring program in Kansas, where she was responsible for 175 volunteers who were matched with students. Everything changed when Abigail had a brain aneurysm that left her with lasting residual effects that she now deals with on a daily basis. Abigail was led to Goodwill’s Job Connection program in 2013. There she was referred to the Goodwill TulsaWORKS job training program, where she participated in multiple skill training classes. She was especially drawn to the Private Security Program, because both of her sons are in law enforcement and she was intrigued with the field of criminal justice. With her good work ethic and outstanding attitude, Abigail completed her training and in 2013 she achieved her goal by completing an application for G4S Security Company. She was hired soon thereafter and works as a security officer at the Citiplex

Towers in Tulsa. The 2013 Graduate of the Year Award winner is Kyler Patrick, who began his association with Goodwill as a high school senior in Owasso, where he was a student in Goodwill’s Transitional Work Adjustment Program. He learned what employers expected in the workplace, how to take instruction and how to behave on the job. Kyler also received valuable work experience in a Goodwill retail store and learned how to interact with customers. In 2013, Kyler was referred to Goodwill’s Supported Employment Program to discover his work interests and skills. Ultimately, he applied for work at Mazzio’s Italian Eatery in Owasso, where the manager and staff were charmed and confident Kyler could play a role in their establishment. The position of “personality” was created specifically for Kyler, and he now busses and cleans tables, keeps the dining room clean, and uses his charming personality to provide exemplary customer service. Thank you, Tulsa, for helping individuals who have overcome considerable challenges to meet their goals.

CChalk It Up to a Fun Weekend of Art Stilt walkers, fire dancers, music by Desi and Cody, and dozens of artists kick up dust Broken Arrow’s Rose District, June 6-7.

By Christopher Davis Hosted by Your Design Art Gallery, the 3rd annual Chalk It Up – An Art Festival is set to take place on June 6 and 7 in Broken Arrow’s Rose District. With the recent rebirth of the Rose District, Main Street offers a fresh canvas for chalk artists to work their magic. Since its beginning several years ago, attendance “has grown by thousands,” says Alisa Inglett, owner of Your Design Art Gallery and event coordinator for Chalk It Up. “The event has grown to two blocks,” she says, referring to how artists spread out in the streets to create awe-inspiring chalk images. With over 40 artists competing for prizes and bragging rights, Inglett says every year brings a surprise creation. “You never know how a piece will turn out,” she says. “I’m always most impressed with the younger artists.” Inglett, who oversees the artist submission process as well, explains how some proposals may seem underwhelming on paper, early on. However, over the years, she has learned to withhold judgment, as some of the best pieces “pop” once they make their way to the chalk-on-asphalt medium. “The three-dimensional pieces are always fun,” Inglett says. “I enjoy seeing the variety in

Patios • Retaining Walls • French Drains • Leaf Removal • Lawn Maintenance • Walkways • Driveways •

the artistic styles.” Inglett also enjoys seeing the change in vibe between Friday and Saturday at the event. “Friday night is fun because all the artists get to know each other,” she says, noting that the artists have a tendency to ogle one another’s work and voice mutual appreciation. The camaraderie amongst the artists eventually gives way to a more competitive atmosphere as the artists near their deadline. “Saturday is definitely more intense,” laughs Inglett. Artists begin working their respective 10’ by 10’ sections of street at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 6, and continue working on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., when judges will select winners in a handful of categories. First, second and third place will be selected in various age groups in categories like animation, 3-D, masters, artist’s choice, original art and none of the above. The winner of Best in Show will see their image used on T-shirts for next year’s event. But artists will not be the only ones busy at Chalk It Up. There will plenty of activities and entertainment for attendees. There will be lots of vendors out on Main Street, peddling wares and providing food. On Friday, look for performance artists

Chalk It Up – An Art Festival takes place in downtown Broken Arrow’s Rose District. like stilt walkers and jugglers. A fire show is planned for Friday evening as well. On Saturday, live music from Desi and Cody is sure to put everyone in a festive mood. Chalk It Up is made possible by a collaborative partnership with the City of Broken Arrow, the Broken Arrow Parks Department, the Arts and Humanities Council and Your Design Art Gallery. Sponsors include Blue Bell Ice Cream, QuikTrip (provid-

ing sandwiches for contestants) and Wal-Mart (which supplies all the chalk for the event.) Wine, Eats & Easels to Benefit W Broken Arrow Neighbors

The annual evening of food, wine, art and music will be held Friday, June 13 in downtown Broken Arrow. By Adam J. Foreman It’s a great party, but an even greater cause, as the Wine, Eats & Easels event returns to Broken Arrow on Friday, June 13, 2014, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance at several ticket outlets and $50 at the door the night of the event. This year’s event will again be held at the Farmer’s Market and Broken Arrow Historical

Society Museum, both located in downtown Broken Arrow at 418 S. Main St. Patrons are treated to an evening of food, wine, art and music. Dozens of wine vendors from across the area come together with local food establishments to create an atmosphere of taste and culture. Nearly a dozen artists will be on site displaying their work

for sale and also be performing live art exhibits. And local jazz enthusiast Grady Nichols will also be on hand to perform again as this year’s headliner. The most rewarding aspect of the evening is the cause the event celebrates. Proceeds go to benefit Broken Arrow Neighbors, which helps aid area families who need extra assistance with clothing, money,

school supplies, medical help and other unexpected situations. “We are so excited to move our event to June instead of October as it has been in the past,” said event chair LaTonya Cundiff. “The weather seems to be better and makes people want to celebrate outdoors. Plus, it allows us to get the message out of how important Broken Arrow

Page 9

Neighbors is to this community. Our corporate sponsors are the lifeblood of this event, and we are always interested in having more join the team!” Partnering with the Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council, the event brings together some of the most eclectic and diverse artists from across the region. Artists have their art for sale and stick around to talk to patrons about their work. In addition to the food, wine and art, special surprises will be on hand as well, including the world famous Butt Sketch artists, a wine pull, live art demonstrations, photo booths and more. Wine, Eats & Easels is presented by the Friends of Broken Arrow, Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council, the City of Broken Arrow and the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum. Tickets are available at all AVB Bank locations, Holiday Inn Express in Broken Arrow next to Bass Pro Shops, Epic Salon and Broken Arrow Neighbors. For more information and an ongoing update of the list of vendors, or like us on Facebook at facebook.com/wineeatsandeaselsba. Corporate sponsorships are vital to this event are also still available. BBruce Springsteen: A

Photographic Journey The GRAMMY Museum and The Woody Guthrie Center present the exhibition capturing a behind-the-scenes look into the artistry of Bruce Springsteen.

By Todd Cunningham Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey, a traveling photography exhibition curated by the GRAMMY Museum Los Angeles, made its debut in Tulsa at The Woody Guthrie Center in late April. The exhibition features 45 iconic images of Bruce Springsteen. On display until spring of 2015, the exhibit serves to document a great American music legend, and features photos taken by noted Springsteen photographers Danny Clinch, Ed Gallucci, Eric Meola, Pamela Springsteen and Frank Stefanko. “Our goal with this exhibition is to define the career of Bruce Springsteen in an entirely new light, as captured by these five incredible photographers,” said GRAMMY Museum executive director Bob Santelli. “Each of these photographers was able to artfully document Bruce’s world, at different stages in his career. We are honored to partner with each of them in order to help tell the story of one of the most important figures in American music.” Bruce Springsteen’s recording

career spans more than 40 years, beginning with 1973’s Columbia Records release Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ. He has released 18 studio albums, garnered 20 GRAMMY Awards, won an

Oscar, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was a 2009 recipient of Kennedy Center Honors and was named 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year by The Recording Academy.

Springsteen’s newest album High Hopes (Columbia) was released on January 14, 2014. While the majority of the exhibit focuses on Springsteen off-stage, four additional live performance photographs, shot by Barry Schneier, are showcased. These photos were shot during the now famous Springsteen concert at Harvard Square Theater where famed Rolling Stone music journalist Jon Landau claimed, “I have seen the future of rock and roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Additionally, the exhibit features video interviews with each of the photographers, produced

by The GRAMMY Museum. The debut of the exhibit coincided with the one-year anniversary of the opening of the Woody Guthrie Center. “We are thrilled to be kicking off our anniversary celebrations with this incredible exhibit featuring photographs spanning the career of Bruce Springsteen. He is an excellent example of an artist who continues the legacy of Woody Guthrie. The opening of this newly curated exhibit at the Woody Guthrie Center is a perfect fit,” said Deana McCloud, executive director. The Woody Guthrie Center features state-of-the-art exhibits, an extensive outreach and education program, and a concert series to bring his legacy to Tulsans and those who make the pilgrimage to what is a destination for Woody Guthrie fans worldwide. The Center is more than a museum; instead, it is a center of investigation for inspiration. By providing examples of Woody’s ability to use his creativity as a way of expressing the world around him, we hope to encourage others to find their voices and, through their educational programs, explore the power that lies within the creative process.

SAY “NO” TO BACK SURGERY “After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My whole life changed, not being able to escape the disabling pain. After cortisone epidurals in my spine, the pain returned. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Dr. Day was one of the first doctors in the area to use this new treatment and has had over 30 years experience treating bad backs.

So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am now able to get up in the morning and get dressed by myself, put my shoes on without holding on to something (which I haven’t been able to do in a very long time). I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said ''No!'' to back surgery. Thank you, Dr. Day for everything you and your staff did for me!"

GGot the Summertime Broken Bones? Grassroots Healthcare treats a variety of ailments without involving third parties (beyond the doctor and patient).

By Christopher Davis Summertime is here. Camping, hiking and sports are all popular this time of year. Unfortunately, playing hard can sometimes lead to injury. Before you head to the nearest emergency room for that twisted ankle, consider an easier and less costly alternative – Grassroots Healthcare in south Tulsa. For those who worry about long waits in crowded hospital rooms, and overpriced and impersonal doctor visits, Grassroots Healthcare offers a unique alternative to help families keep costs low without sacrificing health. In May of 2011, Grassroots Healthcare opened at the corner of 91st and Sheridan. Since then, patients have fallen in love with the “third-party free” clinic. Melita Tate, M.D., and Kelly Compton, NP, lead a team dedicated to providing quality, affordable healthcare. “We do not deal with insurance, nor do we take Medicare,” says Dr. Tate. With all the controversy about healthcare reform in the news, it is refreshing to see a clinic that focuses on the patient. The concept behind the clinic is as simple as it is ideal. A patient schedules an appointment; the doctor meets and treats the patient. The patient pays. Follow up as needed. No extra paperwork to deal with a week later. No calling

to haggle with faceless call center representatives during a lunch break. No hidden costs. In fact, fees for procedures are posted at the front desk. With third parties removed from the doctor-patient equation, costs remain low. Doctors and patients do not need to worry about extra costs and paperwork and, instead can focus on health. This straightforward approach, reminiscent of small-town practices, is advantageous for several types of patients. “Some of our patients have coverage, but want to avoid the wait times associated with larger hospitals,” says Dr. Tate. Others who have coverage may face high deductibles, and would rather not deal with paying the inflated cost of services at larger hospitals. And, for those who have no insurance at all, the clinic represents a surprisingly affordable alternative to urgent care or emergency room visits. Many of Dr. Tate’s patients are regulars because they trust her knowledge and appreciate the attention she dedicates to their health. This month, Grassroots patients will recognize a familiar face returning to the clinic. Nurse Practitioner Kelly Compton will be joining Dr. Tate in mid-June. “Kelly did some of her training with us a while back,” says Dr. Tate. “We are excited to welcome

By Duane Blankenship AVB Bank recently held groundbreaking ceremonies celebrating the newest chapter in their 109-year history. A 15,000-square-foot AVB branch will be constructed at Main and El Paso and will open in 2015. Dr. Clarence Oliver, former Broken Arrow superintendent of schools,

gave a fascinating history of the growth and development of Broken Arrow and the role AVB Bank has played in supporting the community since its inception in 1905. Oklahoma gained statehood in 1907, and the bank was granted its state charter in 1909, changing its name

to Arkansas Valley State Bank. It is now known as AVB Bank. AVB Bank has a history of strength, stability and service. They have a solid backbone, having survived the Dust Bowl era, wars, and economic fluctuations over the years. AVB has remained

www.ValueNews.com constant to its commitment to the people of Broken. “We have endured and grown together,” said Kelley Rash, Chairperson of the Board. “The new AVB Bank will be situated in the heart of the new Rose District, and we are looking forward to growing together.” It takes time, grit, determination and perseverance to build stability and AVB has spent over a century establishing a solid foundation with the people and businesses of our city. “We’re proud to call Broken Arrow home,” added Ms. Rash. “We’re dedicated to continuing our hard work and providing services that will make business relationships even stronger.” The mission of AVB is to serve, connect and succeed together, ensuring a vision of being the community bank most admired for its people, partnerships and performance. “We strive to serve with integrity and enjoyment, work together to encourage personal growth, and acknowledge and celebrate success,” said Ms. Rash. Ted Cundiff, AVB president and CEO, announced the future development of a Creative Arts Center in the existing building located at Main and Dallas. “AVB will donate the property once we have completed our move into the new AVB branch,” said Mr. Cundiff. With the development of Broken Arrow’s arts and entertainment district, previous bond monies earmarked for an arts center, and the opportunity for a significant donation of property by AVB Bank, community and business leaders recognized that

now was the time for action. A Creative Arts Center would provide a central place to foster relationships between artists, and the addition to the arts and entertainment district could significantly contribute to the city’s economic development. Ms. Rash acknowledged, “Community and business leaders are currently working together, along with public input, to create the vision of a Creative Arts Center. Current considerations include gallery space, a black-box theater, jazz lab, artists-in-residence, recording or filmmaking studio, culinary classes, and space for dance, sculpting, glassblowing and poetry slams. A timeline will be solidified upon the completion of a partnership that creates a funding mechanism for the proposed facility.” If you would like to provide input on the creation of the Creative Arts Center, please contact local business owner Alisa Inglett at (918) 994-4473. Congratulations to AVB Bank for its 109-years of outstanding performance, dedication and contributions to the Broken Arrow community.

OOfficer Development Program New to RSU Rogers State University and the Oklahoma Army National Guard are partnering to add the GOLD program this fall.

By David Hamby Starting this fall, Rogers State University and the Oklahoma Army National Guard will be offering a Guard Officer Leadership Development (GOLD) program that will build upon the university’s distinguished military history. RSU President Dr. Larry Rice and Major General Myles L. Deering, Adjutant General of Oklahoma, recently signed the agreement during a campus ceremony. The program is expected to begin on the Claremore campus this fall. “For more than 50 years, this school operated at Oklahoma Military Academy and enjoyed a reputation as one of the nation’s premiere military schools,” Rice said. “Through this agreement with the Oklahoma Army National Guard, we are providing opportunities to prepare a new generation of citizen soldiers.” The leadership program is open to Oklahoma Army National Guard soldiers who attend RSU. Candidates can receive 100 percent of their college tuition paid, live on campus, develop leadership skills and accelerate their military career by being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Oklahoma Army National Guard upon completion of the program. “The National Guard is the face of the

Army. Our citizen-soldiers are in your schools, in your churches and throughout your communities,” Deering said. “It is crucial to our mission that we develop future leaders for the Guard because we are an integral part of your hometown and we’re an integral part of today’s Army.” The college curriculum includes academic leadership training built into the program, along with leadership labs, physical training and field training exercises that provide firsthand experience about leading others as an officer. RSU’s program would be the only such program in northeastern Oklahoma. Several OMA alumni attended the event, and their contributions to the school and its mission were recognized by comments from both Deering and Rice. Bill Ramsay, president of the OMA Alumni Association, said, “We’ve been wanting something like this to happen for years, and we think it will be a great asset to the university. We thank the university and the Guard for bringing boots back to the ground once again on College Hill.” An endowment to support the GOLD program has been established by the family of one of OMA’s most decorated alumni, Lt. Col. Ed Ramsey, who was instrumental in the liberation of the Japanese-occupied Philippines during World War II. His wid-

ow, Dr. Raquel “Raqui” Ramsey, has worked with the OMA Alumni Association to create an endowment that honors her husband through its support of the leadership program. For more information about the program, contact Captain Michael Mitchell, who is serving as the Officer in Charge of the RSU GOLD program.

The fireworks will be launched from the Sapulpa Municipal Golf Course, with recommended viewing areas located to the south. Attendees are encouraged to park at the Walmart Supercenter, or the fields nearby, where there will be ample space for viewing. “We invite everyone to bring their lawn chairs, picnic baskets, footballs, and Frisbees for an oldfashioned fireworks display. This is a fun event for the entire family,” says McCormick. The fun begins at 7 p.m. and stretches into the night – until the fireworks run out. The Kids Korner will have plenty of activities to help the children burn off some energy and occupy their attention until the sun goes down. At about 9:45, the fireworks will begin. Don’t forget to tune in to 88.5 FM to catch the live broadcast and choreographed music. “American Heritage Bank spon-

Need A Vehicle? No Credit? No Problem. truck or SUV.” Car Country is locally owned and operated by Robert Nelson and the Nelson Group. The Car Country concept began about five years ago at the Bixby location, and today there are stores in Broken Arrow, Bartlesville, Claremore and Sapulpa. Each location generally features vehicles that are three to eight years old with acceptable mileage, and each vehicle is sold with a power train warranty. The price range of the offerings at Car Country generally falls between $7,995 and $14,900. “You can be assured that there will be no high pressure selling tactics when you’re on our lot,” assured Toby. “It’s just not the way we operate.” If you don’t see the vehicle you’re

looking for when you visit the Bixby location, they will gladly assist you in finding it. If one of the other stores doesn’t have an automobile to your liking, there’s a chance Toby and his team may be able to find it after you describe what you have in mind. “All you need to do to get the ball rolling with Car Country is to come in with proof of income, proof of your ability to get automobile insurance, show us your driver’s license, and we’ll help you fill out a credit application,” said Toby. Then you can begin the process of picking out a vehicle that will suit your loan payment schedule and driving requirements. Once you’ve been credit approved, you will be required to make a small down payment on the

vehicle you’ve chosen. Payments will be set up with due dates around your paydays and you’ll have up to 36 months to pay off the loan. “All of our pre-owned vehicles make a visit to our Car Country Service Facility located in Sapulpa prior to being put on a Car Country lot,” said Toby. Each car or truck is serviced and safety checked by one of their tech experts. “We take really good care of our customers,” said Toby, “from the time they come shopping with us, through helping them re-establish their credit.” If you’ve been hit with bad credit and are having a difficult time getting it back on a favorable track, visit Toby and his team at Car Country. TTeamwork and Planning Keep Fraudsters Away RCB Bank offers tips to help protect your money when traveling this summer.

By Jocelyn Wood Are you planning a summer vacation? Know this. Fraudsters are planning a vacation of their own and hoping to fund it with your hard-earned money. Stop fraud in its tracks with these simple steps, offered by RCB Bank’s Fraud Team. Team up with your bank. Most banks have fraud departments that are constantly monitoring customer transactions, looking for unusual or high-risk activity. They set up blocks where fraud is trending and keep up-to-date on the latest scams and national breaches, like last year’s Target compromise. “Think of us as a police force trying to stop crime before it happens,” says D. Meyer, RCB Bank Fraud. Contact your bank well in advance of your trip to let them know where you will be traveling. This will not only ensure that your debit card will work outside your home state, but it will also alert your bank to keep a watchful eye on your account. Be sure to give them your cell phone number(s) too, so your bank can reach you during your trip if fraud is attempted. “Banks may block your debit card if they suspect fraud (i.e. purchase made out-of-state),” Meyer said. “This is to protect you and your money. Know your bank’s fraud hotline number. Keep it

handy in case you have troubles with your card. RCB Bank’s fraud hotline is conveniently listed on the back of their debit cards.” Be a savvy travel planner. Avoid acting on unsolicited emails or phone calls regarding free trips, promises of reduced air fare, travel clubs or offers that involve highpressure sales pitches that urge for you to commit right away because the offer will “expire” soon. There are lots of scams out there currently. Never provide card information for a “processing fee.” When using a travel agency, make certain first that the company is registered with the American Society of Travel Agents and to check out the Better Business Bureau rating. Get everything in writing before paying for the trip. Watch for vague promises of “five-star” resorts or luxury cruise ships at “cut-rate prices” – obtain as much information as possible (in writing) about the total cost, any restrictions that may apply, and the exact names/locations of any promised hotels, airlines, etc. Read the fine print! Beware of cancellation policies. Avoid, like the plague, any travel agency or company that mandates arbitration for disputes. Don’t give up your legal rights! Avoid renting a house or cabin that you have not seen.

There are many vacation rentals available, but for every legitimate one, there is one falsely advertised. There is an ongoing scam where fraudsters advertise homes for rent and require payment up front. When the vacationer arrives, there is no home or it is occupied by the real owner. Don’t fall prey to these scams! Use your debit card wisely. Avoid using it at secluded ATMs and out-of-state fuel pumps, if possible. You can purchase a pre-paid VISA card from RCB Bank for making fuel purchases and other expenses. Avoid using your debit card for online purchases, unless there is the “https://” or Verisign or similar security feature. Don’t assume it’s safe. Click on the Verisign symbol to confirm it’s legit. Scammers use Jpeg images of official symbols (with no link) to trick you. Watch your card, keep it secure, and never leave it in your car or unattended. Never share your PIN or give permission to a family member to use it, unless you will approve all their transactions in the future. Always carry another form of payment (money, traveler’s checks, etc.) as a backup. If fraud is attempted, your card has to be closed down to protect your

RCB Bank’s Sean McKee always has a backup form of payment when traveling. A little pre-planning can save you big this summer. Enjoy your trip and don’t invite fraudsters. RCB Bank’s Fraud Department is happy to answer any questions you may have. EEnjoy an Evening of Music Under the Stars Starlight Concert Series fills Tuesdays and first Fridays with free music at Guthrie Green this summer.

By Christopher Davis Every summer, the Starlight Concert Series brings quality live music to diverse audiences in Tulsa. This year marks their 68th season of music, and on Tuesday evenings at Guthrie Green the Starlight Band offers something for everyone, no matter your taste. The Starlight Concert Series features two configurations of bands. The Starlight Concert Band, which performs the majority of the shows, is the larger of the two, comprised of over 45 musicians playing brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. The Starlight Jazz Orchestra is a smaller version of the Concert Band (about 20 members) and features drums, bass, guitar and piano in addition to the brass, woodwinds and percussion sections. The Starlight Band features some of the best players in town, and it is common for Starlight musicians to be heard performing in other local orchestras, including the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Signature Symphony and Bartlesville Symphony. The musical direction for both Starlight Bands is impressive and steeped in the Tulsa community. Dale Barnett, the conductor and musical director for the Starlight Concert Band, has performed with the Starlight

Band since 1971. He serves as the director of bands for Holland Hall and plays trombone with the Tulsa Philharmonic. Rich Fischer, notable KWGS personality and general manager, serves as director for the Starlight Jazz Orchestra. He, too, plays trombone with the Tulsa Philharmonic. Wendy Reed, executive director for Starlight Concerts, explains that her organization works hard to ensure Tulsa has opportunities to attend live concerts in a familyfriendly setting. The best thing, she boasts, is that every Starlight

Concert is free to the public. “The Starlight Band is one of only a handful of professional concert bands in the United States,” Reed points out. “Tulsa is probably the smallest town in the United States with a professional concert band. This is, really, a unique opportunity for Tulsans.” Ms. Reed explains that, every season, the Starlight Concert Series strives to present a broad spectrum of music for as large an audience as possible. Surely, this summer’s performances at the new Guthrie Green in the Brady

District will attract new listeners. “This year we’re very excited to announce that our free concerts will be at Guthrie Green,” says Reed. “Guthrie Green is in the heart of the vibrant Brady Arts District, and we are looking forward to introducing even larger audiences to our familyfriendly concerts.” This season’s schedule is engaging. The Starlight Concert Band will kick off the series on Tuesday, June 24 with “Americana Night.” On Tuesday, July 1, the band showcases various dance styles with

“Let’s Dance.” The evening will feature live dancers, too. On July 8, the Starlight Jazz Orchestra will perform for Will Rogers Rotary Club Night. Then, on Friday, July 11, the Concert Band will perform a special Friday show, “That’s Entertainment,” in conjunction with the First Friday Art Crawl in the Brady Arts District. The Starlight Concert Band is back on Tuesday, July 15, for “Night at the Movies.” The evening will feature popular movie themes, followed by a silent short film accompanied by live theatre organ music. On Tuesday, July 22, join the Concert Band for “At Your Request,” wherein the audience will help select songs. Then, join the Starlight Jazz Orchestra for another First Friday Art Crawl on August 1 for “Jazz Under the Stars.” With a change in scenery this year and a schedule designed to attract Brady District pedestrians, the Starlight Concert Series is one of the highlights of summer in downtown Tulsa.

FFeel the Call to Foster? TFI Family Connections offers extensive training and continued support to foster parents.

By Lorrie Ward

Imagine you are a child who has been abused or neglected in the only home you have ever known. Suddenly, you are taken from your “nest” by those who claim they want to help you – but it doesn’t feel that way when you are placed in strange living surroundings and even into a new school. The home you knew before may not have seemed welcoming, but neither does the new world you’ve just entered. And to make it even worse, you have no control over the situation and none of it is your fault. Unfortunately, this is all too common a scenario for children who are removed from their homes for their own protection. According to Jason Cecil and Kyle Becker of TFI Family Connections, their organization works hard to change all of that, with priorities of restoring families and keeping children in foster homes in their home areas. But the biggest obstacle facing the achievement of this goal is a lack of foster homes. “In the last year in Tulsa County,

for example, 1,700 children have been removed from their homes,” said Cecil. “But there are currently only 217 foster homes available.” Becker attributes part of this problem to the fear and misunderstanding that often surround these children’s situations. “Foster care has a lot of negative stigma associated with it, but we’ve found that people who get involved as foster parents realize that these children are not at fault and have just come out of bad situations of abuse and neglect,” said Becker. “They just need a home to care for them and someone to stay with.” The foster care system in Oklahoma was previously regulated by DHS, but due to recent legislative changes, the agency now works hand in hand with the privately owned TFI Family Connections to provide quality foster homes to children in need. TFI Family Connections works hard to live up to its name and offers extensive training for foster families. They continue the support by either providing

or providing access to the following services: 24 hour on-call social worker, informative monthly newsletter, local monthly support meetings, free ongoing training, multimedia resource library, close-to-home service office, respite care, professional (and

consistent) personal case manager, in-home behavioral health services with no waiting periods, liability insurance, and reimbursement payments. In addition, they help navigate through services offered by DHS, which still include financial reimbursement for

Page 25

foster families, and clothing allowances and Sooner Care insurance for the foster children. From the very beginning with TFI Family Connections, foster parents are never alone in their efforts to foster children – TFI not only helps them “feather the nest” by offering step-by-step training resources (including online classes), but helps maintain the connecting threads of that nest as well. According to Cecil and Becker, this strong foundation for successful foster parenting is already in place. The great need is for those who are willing to build on that foundation by becoming foster parents. Both men are willing to come and speak to individuals or groups about the process and want to answer any questions and calm any fears that potential foster parents might have. “We want to reach out to the community through organizations and churches,” says Cecil, who encourages these entities to contact either himself or Becker to come out and speak. “We will come out and meet with you.” For more information, contact

GGolf for Youth

The 11th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament benefitting the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services will be Friday, June 20.

By Lorrie Ward In June, two organizations will once again join forces to tee off on the golf course and raise awareness for important programs that have a great impact on our community. The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services are proud to present the 11th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament on Friday, June 20 at Claremore’s Heritage Hills Golf Course. The tournament features a four-person scramble. Individuals and businesses can get involved by playing in the tournament (by entering a four-person team for $300 or as an individual for $75), or by donating to a sponsorship. The cost of individual and team entries includes breakfast and lunch. Many sponsorship opportunities are available including: Hole Sponsor, Breakfast Sponsor, Corporate Sponsor and Radio Sponsor. The radio sponsorship includes airtime in which you speak with radio hosts and promote your business. Funds are used to further the missions and goals of both sponsoring organizations, each of which are dedicated to benefiting the youth of Rogers County.

“This tournament helps RCYS bridge the gap that is not provided for through state and area grants,” says Steve Blahut, Rogers County Youth Services director and coevent coordinator. “This tournament is wonderful because you are supporting two youth specific groups in one tournament,” adds Bret McGuire of the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation, an event coordinator for Steaks & Sticks. Steve, Bret and other group coordinators, including Sean Cox of Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and RCYS Board Member; Delayna Trease, volunteer; Herb McSpadden, volunteer; and Dave Bethea and Carolyn Swopes of RCYS, are all excited about continuing this event into the next decade, as they feel a golf tournament fits in with the both organizations’ philosophies of encouraging outdoor activity amongst youngsters. “The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation’s mission is to purchase and provide any equipment that helps with athletic conditioning and injury prevention training, and we also help by offering

Steaks & Sticks committee members (L to R): Carolyn Swopes, Bret McGuire, Sean Cox, Dave Bethea, Herb McSpadden and Delayna Trease. educational programs for coaches and staff,” says Sean Cox. “This golf tournament is a great vehicle for the community and Rogers County to support two totally youth oriented programs and have fun at the same time.” Cox also notes that Steaks & Sticks is one of the most attended golf tournaments at Heritage Hills, normally hosting more than one hundred individuals. “The tournament grows each year, and we look forward to seeing the same people that participate each year, as well as the excitement of seeing new participants getting involved,” says Carolyn Swopes. Delayna Trease agrees, adding, “The community is so receptive to this fun golf tournament. The tradition of the Steaks & Sticks

Golf Tournament is something I am fortunate to be a part of.” All teams begin play at the shot gun start event at 8:30 a.m. Afternoon tee times begin at 1 p.m. Golfers will gather during lunch to watch a live broadcast of “The Sports Animal” with Al Jerkins and Pat Jones, who are, as Bret McGuire says, “always entertaining” and Dave Bethea calls, “one of the most listened to sports talk shows in the state of Oklahoma.” Golfers will also have the chance to win prizes in a drawing based on the amount of mulligans purchased. Past prizes have included lawnmowers, weed eaters, golf bags and clubs, and even a round of golf for four at Patricia Island. “We are so grateful to the

community and this region for their support of Rogers County,” says Steve Blahut of RCYS, which is a private, non-profit United Way agency and part of a network of 43 youth services and agencies across the state of Oklahoma since 1976. “The support received for this event is an example of the heart people have toward our youth.”
