Check Off Your List All at Once You can finish your Christmas shopping early with the unique selection of Surceé Gifts and Home. By Susan Erler
Have you ever noticed that some people just seem to be more organized when it comes to the holidays? By December 3rd, they are lounging in front of the fireplace, sipping hot chocolate and enjoying the season. “What is their secret?” you may ask. Instead of fighting the crowds at the mall or at the big box stores, they do their holiday gift shopping at
Surceé Gifts and Home in Owasso. Located at 9455 Owasso Expressway in the Tyann Plaza, Surceé offers unique and one-of-a-kind items in every price range. Laura Sanders, owner, brings in the hottest new holiday items for you and your home, and it is her goal each year to make the season fun and easy for all of her customers. “With
Christmas right around the corner, customers will find a huge selection of fabulous gifts sure to please everyone on their list,” says Laura. “And we offer free gift wrapping with every purchase. Just walk in and choose an item, then walk out with a beautifully wrapped package. One stop and you are done!” As you browse the store,
Dawn Atkins is enjoying her first Christmas season working at Surceé.

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
PRESERVE THE GAINS IN YOUR 401K BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
“The higher they go the harder they fall” rings loud in this type of environment. As the market continues into record territory, you have to wonder which of these days is going to be the “high” of the run. Many have seen their 401k’s and brokerage accounts produce nice returns. The question now is “Do you have a plan to help preserve the gains that you have made?” If not, you could ride this sexy red sports car right back into the swamp. In fact, it may be time to start looking to trade that sports car for a one ton work truck, if you catch my drift. It really doesn’t matter in the end how much of a run up you’ve had, what matters is what you get to keep. If I had a penny for every time I’ve had someone bring in their old 401k statement or brokerage statements from another firm and tell me “what the value used to be ….” with a sad and bewildered look in their eye, I’d be a rich woman. Well then, I say “Let’s don’t do that again!
Use a different strategy!” Don’t get seduced by the greed monster thinking that you must drive the sexy red sports car until the wheels fall off. In the last 13 years (March 2000 to September 2013) the S&P 500 has increased from 1527 to 1745. (1) That is an increase of 14.2% in 13 years! This means the S&P 500 had just a little over 1% average return a year. During that time we have had two major recessions. From 2000-2002 the S&P 500 fell 47.6%. (2) It took 5 years to recover to its previous high. From 20072009 the S&P 500 fell 56.2%. (3) It has taken 4 years to recover those losses. The
market moves in two directions. Take time to look at where you’ve been, where you are, and where you want to go. Don’t sit around and wait for a crisis to hit and then try to figure out what to do. Plan your exit strategy in advance so that you are not making emotional decisions. Don’t wait until you have lost $100,000 in your 401k or investment accounts to figure it out. If you don’t know “what to do or how to do it” when it comes to your investments, pay for someone to help you. It will be worth every penny! For more information visit www.waterstoneweatlh.com. FFeast on Cajun Cuisine
Want something delicious, flavorful and a little different for your holiday meals? Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats has you covered.
By Deanna Rebro
Every Cajun meal is a celebration in itself. And there’s only one place in Tulsa to get the best Cajun food made by real Cajuns – that’s Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats at 2101 E. 71st St. “Cajun Ed” Richard never planned on owning a meat market, much less a restaurant. His grandfather owned several restaurants and a catering company in Lafayette, Louisiana,
and he worked there in high school. He left Lafeyette after college to work for an office product company and made Tulsa his family’s home. Over the years, Cajun Ed thought more and more about getting into the food business. “It was just in the blood. My family was involved in it. I’ve always cooked, just not professionally, but I always wanted to.”
“Cajun Ed” Richard with the world-famous turducken.
In 1998, the original market opened at 81st and Lewis. Ed’s idea was to make products under Federal USDA inspection and legally ship them all over the United States. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s is one of only two federally inspected facilities in Tulsa and has a full time inspector on site daily overseeing production. The production facility in the back of the restaurant produces a wide range of products, including nearly 50 varieties of sausages, gumbo, maque choux, and etouffee. Eighteen varieties of stuffing can be ordered inside a large selection of meats, including the turducken (a chicken stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey). You can stop by for your favorite cuts of beef and pork, rabbit, crawfish (seasonally), alligator, chicken, game hens, oysters and quail. The largest Cajun market in Tulsa offers many retail items from all over Louisiana. Cajun Ed says many Louisiana natives come in to pick up products from “home” that they can’t find anywhere else. When the current location opened six years ago, they added a cafeteria-style lunch
service that features live music daily. Two years ago they began seated dinner service. A rotating list of specials is offered each day of the week. One of Ed’s favorites is “Cajun-Mex Tuesday,” with red bean burritos, a variety of Cajun tacos, and his grandfather’s crawfish tamales. The tamales are a longtime family favorite from the catering service and were nearly lost after “Paw Paw” passed. When they could not decipher the bits and pieces of the recipe scribbled down on a scrap of paper, the family decided to get together to try to recreate it. “My wife loved the tamales. They were her favorite thing to eat in the world, so she helped us recreate it. I had parts of the recipe from my cousin, whose brother used to make them for the catering company. My brother in Florida came to town and for a week we got together and made tamales. We’d make a batch and give them to my wife, and she’d tell us ‘that wasn’t it,’ so we’d make another batch and she’d say no. I don’t know how many batches we made, but finally she said we got it right. And we all knew when we tasted them – they were super good.”
Paw Paw’s tamales are served open faced with crawfish etouffee and homemade pico. Cajun Ed is pleased to introduce the creations of his new chef, Aubrey Brune. The OSU Culinary Arts graduate has nearly 20 years of experience in various restaurants, but Cajun food is his new passion. “Aubrey adds his special touch to make some of the best food we have ever offered,” says Cajun Ed. This year you can choose your favorite from three types of cornbread dressing. Christmas morning in Louisiana means beignets are in the kitchen. Cajun Ed’s has the beignet mix and chickory coffee to go with it, or beignets and café au lait are offered from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. Place your holiday order online at www.cajuned.com or stop by the big red house just west of 71st and Lewis. For more information, contact

STOP THE SNORING!
Snoring is more than a nuisance - it can harm both your health and your relationships! It's not only loud and disruptive it wakes both you and your partner. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, a serious and even life threatening disorder. Sleep apnea causes a drop in blood oxygen levels, which places stress on your heart and raises blood pressure. Sleep apnea also keeps both of you from properly entering REM sleep, the most restorative stage of nightly sleep.

SShe’s Back Dancing
Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient Ramona Wimp get her life back.
By Carol Beck-Round
Ramona Wimp is a selfdefined go-getter. Three years ago, however, Ramona, who is now in her early 50s, began experiencing excruciating pain in her legs and back. “I couldn’t even walk across a parking lot without pain,” she says. Ramona, who had spent her life in active pursuits like horseback riding, dancing and playing with her two daughters, suddenly found
herself incapacitated, unable not only to enjoy her usual activities, but also unable to take care of her family. “When I got home in the evening from work, I had to use my hands to lift my legs, one at a time, out of the car,” she adds. “I could barely climb the steps to our front door.” After arriving home, Ramona often found herself curled in a fetal position,
trying to fight the pain. “I couldn’t even clean my house,” she says. “The pain affected every area of my life, including driving. I couldn’t drive very far without excruciating pain.” An optimistic and outgoing woman by nature, Ramona continued to smile at work, greeting those who walked through the doors of Claremore’s Goodwill, where she is a customer service man-

ager. However, the smile hid the pain she fought daily. “My co-workers were so great,” she says. “They worked with me, allowing me to sit on a stool behind the counter as a cashier when I couldn’t do my regular work.” Some days, she couldn’t even manage that. “The pain would get the best of me sometimes and I’d have to leave work.” Because she had never had a back injury or been involved in an accident, Ramona couldn’t understand why she was in so much pain. “I had ridden horses a lot when I was younger,” she explains. “I’d been bucked and kicked but never had any pain.” In the past, she had also competed in 5K races, leading to knee trouble and a procedure to offer some relief. “I had a lot of wear and tear on my knees,” she adds, “but I couldn’t see how that could affect my back.” Ramona had been to different doctors, including 20 sessions with a chiropractor. “I had also been to an orthopedic surgeon,” she says. “I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, so I asked him about my options.” Seeing the specialist revealed problems with degenerative discs in her back. “He is the one who suggested spinal decompression as an option, but I still waited for awhile,” she says. A visit and several tests with Dr. Dwight J. Korgan at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma eventually led to her giving spinal decompression a try. “I am so glad I
Page 7
did,” she says. “It literally gave me my life back.” Before Ramona finally made the decision to try IDD Therapy, she was at work one day when Ebony Jones, the office technician for Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, saw her suffering from muscle spasms. “Even though I had a smile on my face, Ebony saw I was in pain by the way I moved slowly around the store,” she says. “She convinced me to move ahead with the spinal decompression.” After 20 treatments, which she began this past January, Ramona says, “I can’t believe how good I feel. I’m back to my old self, enjoying those things I couldn’t do before.” One thing this energetic mother does is keep up with her daughters, ages 12 and 14. “They are both active in afterschool activities that involve my driving them to lessons and other appointments, Monday through Friday,” she says. “Without pain, I can now enjoy driving them to the places they need to be. I couldn’t do that before I had spinal decompression.” Ramona encourages anyone suffering from back pain to see if spinal decompression is an option. “It gave me a new lease on life.” For more information, contact

The Greatest Story Ever Told The 15th annual Bethlehem Walk, a free guided outdoor walk through an exciting and realistic Nativity, will be held December 5-8 at Christview Christian Church.
By Sheryl Sowell
Christview Christian Church, located at 2525 S. Garnett, is pleased to present the 15th annual Bethlehem Walk to the Tulsa community. The Bethlehem Walk is a 45minute guided outdoor walking tour through an exciting and realistic Nativity scene. The path is lighted,
and golf carts are available for those who are handicapped or disabled. Performances will be held December 5 and 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and December 7 and 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The presentation features a cast of more than 150 authentically dressed Roman

soldiers, beggars, lepers, heavenly angels, shepherds, and Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child. The church maintains a costume room with hundreds of costumes made as authentically as possible. Live camels, sheep and donkeys add to the authenticity of the greatest story ever told. Reservations are requested, and large groups are welcome. Admission is free. The Bethlehem Walk attracts thousands of attendees each year from a six-state area. Individuals and groups congregate in the church’s auditorium. Everyone is assigned to a family and a guide who is also the “family head.” Some participants will be given Roman coins with which to pay taxes as they enter Nazareth. You may even be hassled by Roman guards along the road as you march to Bethlehem. You will soon figure out, everyone becomes part of the production. A tax collector receives your family’s taxes,
www.ValueNews.com and your family representative will be asked to “make his mark” in the record book. Don’t try to hold back any coins for yourself – tax collectors can get nasty! Along your route, you will encounter angels with silvery white robes and shepherds kneeling in fields. You will visit three wise men and their camels, and will be asked if you have seen the star in the east. As you enter the bazaar, you will enjoy tasting some of the food samples. The bazaar area houses several shops with baskets, jewelry, fruit and nuts, rugs and more. Half the fun of the evening is interacting with the characters, especially when the shepherds invite you to join them at their camp to enjoy their nice warm fire. As you journey on, you will likely see beggars and lepers. Please don’t touch! To do so is “punishable by death.” You will discover that there are no rooms available in Bethelem. One innkeeper announces that he actually put up a man and his wife with child in a stable down the street. It was the last available vacancy in the city. Near the end of your walk, you will fast-forward 33 years as you encounter three crosses on a hillside and visit the tomb area where the body of Christ the Savior has
gone missing. An angel will appear and read from the scripture. At the conclusion of your walk, you are invited back to Fellowship Hall, where you will visit homes and courtyards of ancient times. Children may make a fabric doll, play games, and pet farm animals, while everyone is welcome to enjoy cider and cookies. The evening is entertaining and educational for all, plus a tremendous outreach to the Tulsa community by Christview Christian Church. The reservation hotline is (918) 232-3587. Operators are on duty from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening, or you may send a text message anytime and an operator will contact you and schedule your time. Please advise the operator if someone in your group is disabled and will need a golf cart. You may also visit www.christview.org, click the Bethlehem Walk picture or link, and make your reservation. EEddie Curran Joins RCB Bank Mr. Curran will lead the bank’s Business Services Group.
By Jocelyn Wood
Eddie Curran, of Nowata, recently joined RCB Bank as its new VP Business Services Group Manager. This is a new job position at RCB Bank and Curran will serve as a leader and sales coach for the bank’s Business Services Group. The Business Services Group works closely with business customers on RCB Bank’s variety of money management solutions, including Merchant Card Services (credit card
processing), Remote Deposit Capture, Direct Deposit and Online Banking, Mobile Deposit, Account View, Direct Debit, Lock Box Services, Positive Pay and Pay Cards. The five-member Group which serves all of RCB Bank’s 33 locations in Oklahoma and Kansas aims to make business banking convenient, thus allowing more time with their customers, according to Curran. “When the opportunity

to work at RCB Bank came up, I couldn’t pass it up,” said Curran. “RCB’s approach and philosophy of building relationships with customers rather than pushing widgets matched mine and gives me the chance to utilize my skills in a new and challenging format.” Previously Curran worked for IBT, and for the last 14 years he has worked with banks in a consulting/training capacity as well as in the design and construction of branch projects. RCB Bank was one of his clients at IBT; Curran helped RCB Bank with the design of its new branches in Stillwater and Edmond and various remodels in other communities. Because of that partnership and Curran’s proven performance as a team leader, he was approached by RCB Bank when the new position came about. “Our interaction with Eddie in his previous position proved his customer service abilities,” said Roger Mosier, President and CEO of RCB Bank. His approach to customer service mirrors ours
at RCB Bank, make a connection, build a relationship and be mindful of the needs of our customers.” Curran currently lives in Nowata and enjoys everything outdoors: working in the yard, hunting, and spending time at the lake. He has two kids, his scientist and experimental cook, Jozi, 11, and his athlete of the family, Vance, 9. Curran sits on the Nowata Boys and Girls Club Board where he helps run Tball, softball and baseball programs as well as various fundraising events like their annual Golf Tournament and Princess Tea Party. “Everything starts with the kids,” he said. “I believe that it is important that every child be given every opportunity to succeed and that’s our objective for the kids of Nowata County. By providing them a safe place to get a meal, help with homework, partner up with a mentor, gain life skills or just have a good time, they see that there are people out there who care and that they can succeed in life no matter their circumstances.”
He is also a partner in Chameleon Sounds, a DJ company that does a lot of charity work providing music and lights for events in the community like all the Nowata Boy & Girls Club dances and the Nowata, Osage and Washington County Relay For Life. RCB Bank is an Oklahoma-owned and operated community bank with assets totaling more than $2 billion and 33 convenient locations stretching across Oklahoma and into Kansas. Founded in 1936, RCB Bank is committed to serving its communities with conservative banking practices and progressive banking products. Surgeon Can YYour Make the Difference Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experiences with two surgeons. By Joshua Danker-Dake
Patsy Wessel of Oilton had a positive knee replacement operation with Dr. Ronald LaButti.
When Patsy Wessel, 73, of Oilton, Oklahoma, had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti last year, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The difference in the two procedures, she says, was like night and day. “I had already had one surgery done, and it was very painful,” Wessel says. “I didn’t have a good experience with my first doctor, and I didn’t feel like my physical therapist did a very good job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good experience with him.” Wessel’s knee problems developed gradually, over decades, she says. “I’m 73 years old, and I’m in my 35th year in my job, where I walk and stand on cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cement floors. I’ve worked hard in my life, you know? You just wear your knees out.” Wessel says the knee replacement with Dr.
LaButti was an immeasurably better experience than her previous surgery. “Yes, I had pain – it’s always painful. But for a knee replacement, it was significantly better,” she says. “I had much less pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told me that the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, I was able to get up and walk without so much pain because of how well it was done. I wasn’t even on my cane or walker more than a week before I could walk by myself.” A big part of Wessel’s good experience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passive motion machine for physical therapy, and Wessel says it worked wonders. “Dr. LaButti sent me home with this machine: for two hours, three times a day, you put your leg in it, and it raises and works your knee. It worked wonderfully, and it
doesn’t hurt.” Wessel says her first doctor didn’t use that machine. “He had someone physically doing it, and they can hurt you. Sometimes I was crying by the time they finished. But with the machine, it didn’t hurt, and it kept the knee limber. It worked so well.” Overall, Wessel says, her experience was exceptional. “The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, and he was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to a number of people, and I would recommend him to anyone.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. By Sheryl Sowell
Ladies, you are extraordinary women of God and you deserve a weekend to celebrate this fact! Mark your calendars now for the Extraordinary Women Conference, a weekend designed to help you draw closer to the heart of God and His amazing plan for your daily life. EWomen is
not just a Christian women’s event – it’s a lifestyle. The conference will be held at the Mabee Center, February 28 through March 1, 2014. Julie Clinton, president of Extraordinary Women, has spoken to hundreds of thousands of women as host of EWomen conferences all across America. A person of

deep faith, she cares passionately about seeing women live out their dreams by finding their freedom in Christ. “We as women give of ourselves all day, every day – to our husbands, children, careers and households – but we rarely give back to ourselves. This conference is our way of giving back to women, offering them a weekend away to experience hope and healing through Jesus Christ,” says Julie. “Extraordinary Women shares with all women, regardless of their religious affiliation, the love, acceptance and completeness God has for us.” The conference will include music, praise and worship, entertainment and special guest speakers. “Our speakers will discuss issues related to women, many that aren’t necessarily talked about at church on Sunday morning, such as divorce, illness and disappointment,” says Julie. The theme of this year’s conference, “The Joyful

Journey,” comes from Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” “Life is not always joyful,” says Julie, “but we must remember that the only true everlasting joy can be found through the Lord.” In addition to Julie, several other women will offer insightful and inspirational presentations at the conference. Karen Kingsbury is a USA and New York Times best-selling author and America’s top inspirational novelist, with 10 of her more than 50 novels landing at number one on national book lists. Chonda Pierce is one of the biggest selling comedians in the world today, consistently a top-selling ticketed artist of any genre. She is one of the country’s most honest artists, allowing her personal struggles to be the substance behind the laugh. Carol Kent is a popular public speaker known around the world for her compelling, humorous, and spiritually uplifting messages. Carol has been a keynote speaker for various women’s conferences and events, and she regularly appears on a variety of nationally syndicated television and radio broadcasts.

Margaret Feinberg was recently named one of the “30 Emerging Voices” who will help lead the church in the next decade by “Charisma” magazine. Margaret has written more than two dozen books and Bible studies. Lisa Whelchel is an actress, author, and inspirational speaker. She is best known for her role as Blair Warner on the sitcom “The Facts of Life.” Lisa left acting to be a stay-at-home mom, and later wrote a series of books on motherhood. In 2012, Lisa returned to television to appear on the series “Survivor: Philippines.” The event will also feature musical performances by Michael O’Brien and Lonestar. LLarger, Brighter Displays for 2013 Enjoy two free drive through events in Muskogee this holiday season – Castle Christmas at The Castle of Muskogee and The Garden of Lights at Honor Heights Park
By Sheryl Sowell
Celebrate the best of family holiday traditions at The Castle of Muskogee! Take a leisurely drive through Castleton Village, filled with over 2,000 holiday inflatables and thousands of colorful lights. The drive through is free and donations are
gratefully accepted. The Castle’s additional events are open November 28, 29, 30, December 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, and every night December 12 through December 31. Please check the calendar at www.okcastle.com for a schedule of each night’s activities.
The Grinch and Father Christmas will make special appearances at The Castle of Muskogee this year.
Outside The Castle, you can take a hayride or a carriage ride through the Village, ride the ponies or the camel, and visit the petting zoo. Stop inside The Castle for old-fashioned family holiday activities. Bring your kids to make ornaments in Santa’s workshop, warm up by the fireplace, and plan your visit with Father Christmas – and keep your eyes open for The Mean Green One, too! Stop in for some holiday shopping with a variety of merchants, and pick up something unique for yourself or a loved one. Get fireworks for New Year’s Eve celebrations and items from The Christmas Shoppe for your own holiday displays. Join us in the Royal Garden Cafe for a light supper or snack, hot chocolate and treats, and great company. Sit and enjoy holiday movies for the whole family. Father Christmas will be at the Castle on Fridays and Saturdays through December 21. There is no cost to talk to
Father Christmas, and pictures will be available for a nominal fee. Please check the calendar at www.okcastle.com for exact dates. The 2013 Castle Christmas displays range from four feet in height to a towering 20 feet tall. You’ll see all of your favorite Christmas characters including Santa, the elves, many snowmen, reindeer, penguins, polar bears and more. Also you will see many of your favorite fun characters including Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, the Grinch, Elmo, Frosty the Snowman, Homer and Bart Simpson, plus many more. “This is the world’s largest display of inflatables,” says Matt Hiller, vice president and advertising director of the Castle of Muskogee. “Bring the whole family for a fun, wholesome evening to celebrate the holidays.” In nearby Honor Heights Park, the Garden of Lights attracts thousands of visitors.
The celebration includes a free drive-through display of over a million shimmering lights displayed throughout the park. Internationally known for its Azalea Festival, Honor Heights Park draws up to a half million visitors annually to its 122 acres, which are planted with more than 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees, beautifully situated among the park’s scenic hilltop drive. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes, and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls, and ponds. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. nightly, and the event is free. Both drive-through events are open nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

CCelebrate Reason for the Season King of Kings Lutheran Church presents their annual free Live Nativity performances on December 14 and 15.
By Sheryl Sowell
As we gather to decorate Christmas trees and purchase presents for loved ones, King of Kings Lutheran Church calls us all to remember the purpose of the Christmas season. In an effort to carry out this mission to celebrate the birth of Christ, King of Kings will be presenting a Live Nativity scene on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each night.
Complete with costumed actors, sheep, camels, a donkey and a stable, the Live Nativity depicts the story of Christ’s birth from the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary, through the arrival of the three wise men. Pastor Rick Tabisz will narrate the Christmas story while the actors illustrate the journey, conflicts and celebration that the family experiences. At the end of the presentation, audience members are invited
The King of Kings Live Nativity cast.
to sing “Silent Night” and warm up with hot cocoa and cookies as well as pet the animals and visit with the cast. “The Live Nativity is a simple reenactment of the birth of Christ that everyone in the family will enjoy. Several families have told me they make this a part of their Christmas traditions every year,” said Pat Bartley, cochair of the public relations committee. “When we all sing together at the end of the performance, it creates a truly beautiful, peaceful feeling within.” The presentation itself will last for approximately 40 minutes, and it is performed regardless of the plunging temperatures. Seating is provided, but Bartley urges spectators, “Please dress appropriately and bring blankets. The metal bleachers are very cold.” The Live Nativity takes place on 13 acres located on the southeast side of Highway 75 and 151st Street in Glenpool. Please arrive early to find seating. Porta-Potties will also be available.
This is the seventh year that King of Kings Lutheran Church has put on a Live Nativity. “We are a missionary church,” Bartley says. “This is our small way of sharing Christ’s love with the community.” King of Kings is a small church with a congregation of just over 100 members; the church begins setting up committees in the early fall to prepare for the event. Whether participants are actors or supervising parking, every member plays a vital role in the Live Nativity. “It takes us all,” Bartley says. “Our goal is to capture the wonder of our Savior’s birth. It isn’t about commercialization; it is about the simplicity and the joy of the occasion.” This project is free to the community, and is a relatively large endeavor for such a small church. Funding comes from both the congregation and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, an organization that does much more than offer financial services. They also offer outreach opportunities that enable
members to help their communities and congregations. “The entire presentation is a testament to the season. The volunteerism that it requires is truly indicative of the Christmas spirit,” says Bartley. King of Kings is a mission church that provides outreach to the community in a variety of other ways as well, including the Mercy Mission II Food Pantry and the Good Samaritan Mobile Medical Ministry, available on the first and third Fridays of each month. The food pantry and mobile medical ministry are held at Extreme Worship in Glenpool. The church will also have a float in the Glenpool Christmas Parade and the Tulsa Hills Christmas Parade, both on December 7.

Give the Gift of a Healthy Glow Giving you instant color, this system creates a spa-like session that results in the healthy, natural look of sunkissed skin. This is the perfect solution for last minute special events and for those that just want a little color every now and then. The next level of tanning is the Express bed. This is a 32-lamp, 15-minute maximum system. Utilizing this bed, tanners can achieve a good base tan by coming in every other day, and then can maintain their look with three to four visits per week. Perhaps the most popular choice is the Turbo Royal Sun 50 bed. This is a 12-minute maximum system and boasts 46 lights. “One of the reasons this bed is our most popular is
the size of it,” states manager Megan Shelton. “It is very comfortable and has four high power facial lights as well. This bed helps you tan faster and it lasts longer.” Maintaining your glow is easy with this choice too. Only one or two visits per week is all that is needed. Maybe you decide that one of the two high pressure choices at Touch of Sun is right for you. The Ultra High Ultra Bronze system creates a relaxing feeling, allowing you to lie comfortably on a mattress while enjoying a soothing vibrating massage. This bed is rated for no more than 24 minutes, 12 minutes on each side, and allows you to achieve a deep base tan in very few sessions. The other high
continued from page 1
pressure bed is an Ultra High UV Scan type. With less burning rays than other beds, this is a great choice for those with a busy schedule, allowing tanners to have significantly fewer visits and save time and money. The equipment is just one way that Touch of Sun sets itself apart from other tanning salons. “We always offer the first tan for free to those that want to just see if this is right for them,” explains Megan. “We are confident that when they try our equipment and see how clean and well maintained our salons are, they won’t want to go anywhere else.” Another perk is the training all Touch of Salon employees receive. They go
through an extensive Smart Tan Certification program. This gives them the knowledge to explain to customers the history of tanning, how to properly care for their skin while tanning, and even talk about why skin tans in the first place. They are also educated on each of the systems they use within the salon so they can pair you up the best bed to achieve your desired results. Got some tough to shop for people in your life? Why not give a Touch of Sun gift certificate? They are easy to use and a perfect solution for gift giving. “Gift certificates are a fun stocking stuffer or a thoughtful Secret Santa option,” says Megan. “And you don’t have to worry about
Want Only the Best for Your Family and Guests? early,” urges Shannon, the daughter of a previous owner, Gordon Pendergraft. “As soon as you know how many people you will be serving. That way you will be sure to get exactly what you want.” The Hamlet honey-kissed hams come in 7 to 18 pound sizes. If you’re not sure what size you need, friendly employees can help you decide. The Hamlet also offers whole smoked turkeys or boneless, spiral-sliced, allwhite-meat honey-kissed turkey breasts. The smoked turkeys range from 10 to 15 pounds and turkey breasts are 4 to 5 pounds. All these meats are fully cooked and ready to eat. They’re always a big hit at any holiday meal or party, and most appreciated by any hostess. The Hamlet hams or turkeys make excellent corporate gifts. Corporate discounts are offered for orders of 10 or more. All the meats can be shipped anywhere in the United States or delivered locally. Custom-made gift baskets, with or without a ham, start at $25. Gift cards in any amount are also popular among individuals and
corporations. Happy recipients can choose a ham, turkey or whatever they want, whenever they want it. They can even use gift cards in the deli that features The Hamlet honey-kissed ham and turkey and a variety of Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, cold sandwiches, grilled sandwiches, wraps, salads, ham and beans, chili and soup. Or they can use the gift cards in the new patio grill at the 91st and Sheridan location. Menu selections include exclusive Hamlet appetizers, steaks and gourmet burgers. “All our meats are the same premium quality as our famous hams,” says Bryan. Ceiling fans, ceilingmounted heaters and a wood burning fireplace create comfortable, year-round al fresco seating for an extraordinarily fine meal, Monday through Saturday. Dine in or order your meals to go. For office parties or unexpected guests, a variety of party trays that serve up to 100 are available for pick up or delivery to your door. For parties of 25 or more, catering can be arranged. When you want only the best for your family and
guests, get a honey-kissed ham from The Hamlet. Don’t forget dessert to top off a great meal! This holiday season The Hamlet is featuring pies and cheesecakes by order. For added convenience, you can order online from your computer, smart phone or tablet.

GGive the Gift of Broadway Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center’s Broadway Triple Play offers savings in time for the holidays.
By Christina Dixon
It’s the happiest time of the year, and Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center is spreading holiday cheer by offering savings on ticket prices for the last three shows of its fifth anniversary season. The ‘Broadway Triple Play’ includes an evening with Australian musical troupe The Ten Tenors on Jan. 24, the Oklahoma debut of the new Broadway smash “Bring It On: The Musical” on Feb. 18 and Tony-Award® winning Best Musical “Memphis” on April 22. The three-show ticket pack ranges from $48 to $144 and is available at the BAPAC Box Office located at 701 S. Main St. in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at (918) 259-5778.
“Our mission is to bring the world to Broken Arrow, and I think we are doing just that with these three elite Broadway shows,” BAPAC Executive Director Mark Frie said. “It’s been an outstanding fifth anniversary, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to close out the season.” On Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m., The Ten Tenors from all the way Down Under take the BAPAC stage, bringing a mixture of rock and classical music to create a sound that is uniquely theirs. This musical ensemble shot to international fame during a guest spot on Oprah Winfrey and hasn’t stopped since. Amidst incredible
international success, this Australian troupe has become known as one of the hardest working touring acts, performing an average of 250 shows per year across seven continents. Continually striving to challenge themselves and their audience, they have sold over 3.5 million concert tickets, have four gold CDs and two platinum, as well as two gold DVDs and one platinum. “The Ten Tenors respectfully tip their hats to their classical roots and share with audiences unique renditions of the genre’s best love pieces, but they also push the boundaries of what it means to be a tenor and to sit in the classical genre in today’s
world,” according to The Ten Tenors website. On Feb.18, the BAPAC theatre will be full of explosive dance and aerial stunts as “Bring It On: The Musical” presents a night sprinkled with sass. Inspired by the 2000 film “Bring It On,” this musical will take the audience on a high-flying journey through friendship, forgiveness and determination. It tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill of extreme competition, which is sure to be everything the audience hoped for and nothing like they expected. April 22 brings awardwinning “Memphis” to Broken Arrow from the
underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tenn. A winner of four 2010 TonyAwards including Best Musical, “Memphis” bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, “Memphis” is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. Come along on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves– filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll. The ‘Broadway Triple Play’ is available at the BAPAC Box Office located at 701 S. Main in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at (918) 259-5778, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
