Paying It Forward Family Animal Medicine engages community and celebrates extended family. By Christopher Davis
Walking into Family Animal Medicine, located at 9200 N. Garnett Rd. in Owasso, one immediately feels welcome. Front desk staff is quick to greet, and technicians seem to be perpetually smiling as they rush from room to room. Though they are busy, everyone always has a moment to say “hello” on their way through. It gives the impression that Dr. Nobles and Dr. Guerriero have succeeded in establishing the type of clinic they originally set out to in 2012. The clinic specializes in small animal medicine, handling everything from vaccinations to spay/neuter and more in-depth surgeries. In addition, the hospital offers

Sidelined by Injury? Dr. Brad Lawson volunteers his services for several local sports teams. By Julie Lawson
Friday night football is here. The stadium lights are coming on, and our kids are running onto the football field once again. The temperature is starting to change, and the atmosphere and support that

the sport, the return of football can also mean challenging injuries, concussions, and significant amounts of rehabilitation and continued care for some. When the excitement of the game turns into the disappointment of an injury, many have realized that they don’t have to drive to Tulsa to find the sports medicine care they need. Dr. Brad Lawson, a physician and orthopedic surgeon in Owasso, has provided excellence in service and sports medicine care in the Owasso, Claremore and Collinsville area for the last several years. Dr. Lawson also volunteers his time as a team orthopedist and sports medicine physician for several of the teams in the area. Dr. Lawson began his (continued on page 24)

There is so much negative news out there. If you watch TV or read the newspaper, you will notice that it often seems driven by finding the worst of the worst in people, politics, business. It’s all about what is going wrong, who did something bad, and why you should be worried. In fact, there is a saying in the news world, “If it bleeds, it leads.” The reason that media is geared that way is because that is what we have shown them we are interested in. So why are we all so addicted to focusing on the negative?

Night at the Wax Museum Don’t miss Owasso Community Theatre Company’s comical journey of six students setting up a wax museum that comes to life, October 2-4 at the Mary Glass Performing Arts Center.
By Kim Thornhill
Owasso Community Theatre Company (OCTC) invites you to a comical journey through the funniest wax museum of all time. “Night At the Wax Museum” by Craig Sodaro comes to the stage in Owasso October 2-4 at the Mary Glass Performing Arts Center. If you’ve always been afraid of wax museums, have no fear. This all-children cast, with more than 30 performers, travels back in time to give the audience a fresh look at history. The characters bring some familiar stories from history quite literally to life! Six unlucky students have to take summer school, and the students are assigned the class project of setting up a wax museum. The students are sure this will be the most boring summer yet, but a group of pirates embarks on
a hunt for treasure that’s hidden in the museum. The wax figures give the students a history lesson and experience they’ll never forget. For the cast, acting will be a memorable experience, both on and off the stage. “I love that OCTC is small enough to give each person that special attention, but organized enough to give the real life experience of auditioning, practicing, and performing like a large production company,” said Brandy Marion, mom to actor Jake Marion. Jake will play Skip in WAX, his fourth show with OCTC. The cast consists of performers with varying experience that ranges from several past OCTC shows to first-time actors. “It’s such a diverse group with so many different backgrounds and levels of theatre experience,” said Kaye

Care of TTaking Cars and Drivers Owasso Auto Care strives to provide reliable, honest auto service to the community. By Deanna Rebro
Car trouble. Those are two words every vehicle owner hates. You depend on your car to take you to and from work, the kids’ activities, even a much-needed vacation. But when car trouble happens, inconvenience, frustration and an unplanned expense all come together. Who can you trust to help you through this situation? Owasso Auto Care at 212 N. Main St. can help you with your problem, and they can help you avoid future problems as well. This little shop in the heart of downtown Owasso has two of the best mechanics in the area, according to owner Tim Miller. “These guys have over 30 years’ experience between them, working on cars and truck of all makes,” he explains. “They are thorough and conscientious. They not only care about cars, they care about the people who bring them in.” No one needs to feel
embarrassed about describing their car trouble by mimicking a sound or demonstrating the car’s behavior. Quite often they can get right to the problem by paying close attention to what the customer is telling them. Since opening the shop three years ago, people have spread the word among family, friends and coworkers that they can take their car to Owasso Auto Care and have the problem fixed the first time without getting ripped off. Tim understands that people are vulnerable when their cars are not running properly, but he will not take advantage of the situation. “We will do everything possible to explain the problem in understandable terms, what needs to be done, and keep the cost as low as we can,” he says. When a customer gets a work estimate, they can be assured that is the highest bottom-line
amount they will pay. And everything will be done to trim off a few dollars wherever possible. Veterans receive an extra 10 percent discount to thank them for their service. “I want these people to come back,” he explains, “and to tell everybody they know we are an honest and reliable business that takes care of cars and the people who drive them.” Tim and his crew can go above and beyond the big franchise services because they have no corporate policies to contend with and they are not profitdriven for their shareholders. They simply build their customer base one relationship at a time. As people keep their cars longer, Tim strongly suggests following the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule to add years to a car’s life. This time of year, it’s important to check all hoses,

the heating system and braking system. At Owasso Auto Care, diagnostics are free of charge, so car owners can be aware of any problems that may be lingering in the future. That’s just another way of helping car owners become pro-active about their vehicles. This same attitude is what saved cancer survivor Tim’s life. Time to Chicken Dance The 2014 Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa will take place October 16-19.
By Stacey Roggendorff
Tulsa’s largest fall festival turns 36 this year. Set for October 16-19, Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers four days of authentic German celebration, including live music, games and, of course, food and drinks, among number other attractions. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn Pass and other ticket packages are available online, allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from noon to 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $15 All-Rides Wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $5 and $10, or patrons can ride the free shuttles, which run three routes through downtown, midtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas. “The festival is a timehonored tradition for Tulsans and visitors alike,” says Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa offers enter-
tainment, activities, and plenty of food and specialty beverages for everyone. It’s no surprise upwards of 60,000 people flock to Tulsa’s favorite Chicken Dance venue.” Live music is always a favorite and this year, several bands are traveling to Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa from Germany. Algäuer Alpincats, Die Wilderer and the Dorfrockers, who hail from the Bavaria region, will perform in Der Lufthansa BierGarten during the festival, including Wednesday’s popular Corporate Night, also known as Gemütlichkeit. Keeping with German tradition, five beer tents will feature a variety of great beer for all tastes. More than 50 domestic and import beers will be available, including premium brands such as Warsteiner, Spaten, Paulaner, Konig and Hofbrau. Beer tents include Der Lufthansa BierGarten, Das Spaten Haus, Das Warsteiner Ess Zelt and Die Bier Stube. Das Fassler Hall Stammtisch Zelt will feature brews from Tulsa’s Marshall Brewing Company, including seasonal favorites Oktoberfest Lager and Klaus Hefeweizen. Wine, mixed drinks and non-alcoholic bever-
ages also will be served. The popular commemorative beer stein will be offered again this year. GGo Nuts on Route 66
Family-friendly activities are set for the 6th annual Route 66 Pecan & Fun Fest on October 25. By Carol Beck-Round
Load up your automobile and head to The Nut House on historic Route 66 for a day of family-friendly activities and products on October 25 at the 6th annual Route 66 Pecan & Fun Fest. Beginning at 9 a.m. and running until 6 p.m., the event offers a vast array of indoor and outdoor booths selling crafts, toys, books, handmade blankets, breads and other goodies as well as Amishmade jerky. “We usually have around 30 booths,” says Hazel Ward, owner. In addition to the booths, attendees can browse through the unique items – most not found in your local grocery or big-box store – inside The Nut House, where new fall products will be available, as well as new crop of pecans. “We’ll also
have our famous Nut House cookies for sale,” she adds. “They contain real butter, corn flakes, oatmeal, coconut, chocolate chips and pecans – just about everything but the kitchen sink.” For kids, there will be a farm animal petting zoo, camel rides and a kiddie train. New additions this year includes pony rides. “It’s a wonderful time for families to get out and enjoy a beautiful fall day full of fun activities,” Hazel adds. Other planned activities include face painting as well as pumpkin painting. “Since it’s the week before Halloween, we’re also sponsoring a costume contest for children, ages one through 13,” says Darryl Ward, owner. professional and trustworthy service, P&K is confident that customers will be pleased with their experience at P&K. “Our goal at P&K is to provide solutions with honesty, courtesy and a sense of urgency,” says Advertising Coordinator Erin Wheeler. “Our Owasso store has had tremendous success because of their excellent customer service.” In fact, the P&K team built such a stellar reputation in Owasso, the company decided to have some of its staff travel to locations in Pryor and Bartlesville to share best practices. The strategy aims to reinforce an already deepseated sense of customer care. After all, when team members show stellar results, it’s wise to empower them in such a way that their passion catches on. Randal Bobbitt, store manager, hones in on the keyword. “We empower our staff to take care of customers immediately,” he says. This subtle difference sets P&K apart from competitors as the company continues to build a reputation for strong customer service.
the way up to full-size tractors and farm implements, and golf and turf equipment. Increasingly, customers want a one-stop shop for their agricultural and landscape equipment needs and P&K is ready to provide that. Recognizing this natural cycle of customer needs is precisely the reason P&K has worked so hard to create an excellent customer service experience, so that the company can create successful, lasting customer relationships. As harvest season wraps up and winter nears, attention turns toward updating, fixing and maintaining equipment in preparation for next year. P&K offers 100+ point inspections and maintenance packages on a variety of equipment. With a reputation for Randal Bobbitt, store manager at P&K Equipment in Owasso. An authorized dealer of John Deere tractors and agricultural equipment, P&K also offers a broad selection of mowers and other lawn and garden equipment from trusted brands like Honda and Stihl. Essentially, the company specializes in equipment solutions that range from leaf blowers and lawn mowers, to chainsaws and generators, all

PPreserving Cowboy Cooking Culture The second annual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off is set for Saturday, November 1.
By Carol Beck-Round
If they were being pulled by horses or oxen, it might look like an Old West cattle drive. However, the chuck wagons that will be rolling into the Claremore Expo Center will be hauled in on flatbed trailers to participate in the second annual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off on Saturday, November 1 as part of the Will Rogers Days celebration. Beef tips, chicken fried steak
and pot roast were three of the main entrees in last year’s competition, with four chuck wagon crews vying for first place and bragging rights. Tanya Andrews, Visit Claremore executive director, is expecting more entries this year, at least eight. “However, we can accommodate up to 15 teams set up on the West Bend on the Green,” she said. “We work with the American Chuck Wagon Association to recruit wagons from all over the country.” The ACWA encourages participants to preserve this aspect of American heritage through competitive events that involve setting up camp, cooking with authentic old western tools and exhibiting restored or replicated chuck wagons. The fun will begin on Friday when the chuck Alaska and Madi, both from northeastern wagons establish Oklahoma, will be performing at the second their camps, folannual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off. The singers were on season six of “The Voice” with lowed by “authenTeam Blake. ticity” judging.
“While the food judges are local, the ‘authenticity’ judges are experienced and recommended by the ACWA,” she adds. “They judge everything including the authenticity of the wagon spokes down to the drawers in the kitchen area.” Points are awarded to the most authentic wagon and then combined with points earned on Saturday during the food judging to determine the overall winner, who receives $1,000. Food judges are recruited from local restaurant owners and chefs. On Saturday, the chuck wagon chefs get down to business with each team digging a cooking pit. By 11:45 a.m., teams will submit their meals to the panel of judges. At noon, event attendees can begin chowing down. In order to guarantee a plate of the cowboy cooking, Andrews suggest tickets be purchased in advance for $10. Tickets go on sale October 6. The day of the event, tickets are $12. Each meal includes meat, potatoes, beans, bread, dessert and a drink. However, tickets are limited. “We can only sell 40 meals per wagon,” says Andrews. Chuck wagon teams will compete in seven categories on Saturday: Most Authentic, Best Overall and Best Food subcategories for meat, potatoes, beans,

Paying It Forward heartwarming as well. But any client familiar with Family Animal Medicine will surely relate similar stories about their kindness and expertise. “Gena and I feel it is our responsibility to give back to our community,” says Dr. Jenny Nobles. “That’s why we go out with Night Light Tulsa every other month and provide healthcare, vaccines, and flea and tick prevention for the pets of homeless people.” When Dr. Nobles is asked which shelter they provide their pro bono services, her response is surprising. “We set up our make-shift hospital under a bridge in Tulsa. We bring donated medicine, dog and cat food, bedding, and other supplies and go to them,” she explains. “The first time, I think they were a little apprehensive.
continued from page 1 But the second time, there was a line around the corner.” Over the past two years, the clinic lost not one, but two, longtime members of their human family. Veterinary Technician Wanda Cline passed away late in 2013. Cline, with over 20 years experience with animals in Owasso, had worked with Dr. Nobles and Dr. Guerriero at a previous clinic and came with them to open their new hospital. She was integral to the early success of their new clinic and was named a finalist in Pet Plan’s Veterinary Technician of the Year in 2012. Sam Alix, a longtime client and friend of Dr. Nobles and Dr. Guerriero, passed away in the fall of 2012. He, like Cline, was a positive and crucial force for the young clinic.
“He always believed in Jenny and me,” says Dr. Guerriero. Alix referred many new clients and personally brought in a steady line of pets. “He was always rescuing animals and adopting them out,” remembers Dr. Guerriero. “He was a true giver.” Family Animal Medicine has established a giving back fund which raises money to help animals in need. Sam and Wanda’s Big Heart Fund, as it’s known, accepts donations toward covering costs for established patients who encounter costly health issues. The fund is just one more way FAM tries to “pay it forward” and keep alive the memory of Wanda Cline and Sam Alix. Family Animal Medicine will hold their Fall Festival on Saturday, November 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
to raise money for Sam and Wanda’s Big Heart Fund. There will be snacks for clients and pets as well as activities for the whole family. The invite is extended to everyone, and pets are encouraged to dress in costume. For the latest details on the Fall Festival, visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FAMOwasso.

stored on a server off site, or “up in the cloud,” as some are fond of saying. Now, as Dyson puts it, “it’s just cameras and cloud storage.” Cameras, too, have become remarkably more effective, compared to their predecessors. Not long ago, security cameras were bulky and obvious. In some cases, their effectiveness relied as much on the perception of being watched as the likelihood that anyone was actually monitoring in real time. Now, video cameras are subtle and reliably transmit footage in real time over high speed Internet. And, since administrators are able to view on computers (and even smartphones) safely off-site at any time, the would-be criminals’ perception they cannot escape the so-called “eye in the sky”

Custom Communications and Technology Solutions Systems. Their clients include large casinos, small businesses and family homes who demand the best security, networks and electrical systems. “Technology has changed,” says Dyson. A quick glance at everyday gadgets suggests that electronics have attained a new level of efficiency and ability. With Internet and cloud-based solutions becoming standard, electronic systems are now faster, smaller and are shedding redundant components. In the security industry, the effects of technological progress are noteworthy. Two decades ago, surveillance systems relied on VHS tapes to store video footage. A decade ago, DVR was standard. Now, cloud servers are simplifying the process even more. That is, digital video footage is

Currently, they offer a 2-gig security package that includes three doors, a motion sensor and control panel. “The system can handle up to 40 devices, and you can get it for around $99,” notes Dyson. So, even when a user is on vacation for the holidays, he or she can log in and view video footage, turn on lights or even turn off the sprinklers. “We don’t want to walk into a building and see a lighting system and say, ‘Wow, who did this?’ We want to be the ones installing these ystems that wow people,” says Mike Eubanks, head of TelStar Technologies. Eubanks and Dyson are longtime friends who cut their teeth at large technology companies. Recognizing a demand for customized services they specialized in, Eubanks and Dyson struck out on their own. “The trend with the larger security companies is to go out and win as many accounts as possible,” says Dyson. “We don’t view our customers as numbers; we build relationships,” he says.

TTake a Ride the First Weekend in October Claremore Main Street presents the 8th annual Dickens of a Ride on Saturday, October 4, 2014. By Sheryl Sowell
Dickens of a Ride attracts hundreds of cyclists each year.
Bicyclists in northeastern Oklahoma, plan to enjoy a great ride on Saturday, October 4 during the Dickens of a Ride bicycle tour through the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding Claremore. The ride is sponsored by Claremore Main Street, Inc. and supports their many programs and projects throughout the year. Proceeds from the ride help fund preservation efforts, economic development, and special projects including planters, trees, benches and public art. Dickens of a Ride attracts cyclists from Oklahoma and adjoining states. Ride options include distances of 30, 50, 62 and 100 miles. And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is approximately seven miles. This is a good ride for beginning cyclists or for young families. All bike routes begin and end at Gazebo Park at Muskogee Avenue and Will Rogers Boulevard. Riders will head west out of Claremore through scenic country sides to Oologah. From there, they will cycle areas surrounding Claremore Lake. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through chal-

lenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are urged to stop by the Gazebo, where lots of really nice door prizes will be awarded by drawings as participants return. Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett says, “The Boomarang Diner is offering a great Breakfast Ride Special beginning at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.” It will include one egg, two pieces of bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and gravy, and hash brown potatoes. Milk, coffee or juice is not included with the special, but may be purchased separately. There will also be eight well-supplied rest stops along the bike routes where riders look forward to sitting a spell and taking advantage of numerous home baked goodies and fruit. Excellent mechanical and SAG support will be provided on the Dickens of a Ride until 5 p.m. Be sure to wear your ANSI, CPSC, or Snell approved helmet if you plan on participating in the ride; it’s required. Visit the www.downtownclaremore.org to register online or if you prefer, you may print a registration form, fill it out, and
mail it in with your check. Registration packets may be picked up at Bike-About Bicyles, 300 W. Muskogee Ave., on Thursday, October 2, 5.p.m. until 7 p.m. You may also get your packet beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the ride. Maps will be provided, and you need to be prepared for some hills. Riders under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is also on a bicycle and riding with them. Riders under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a Ride Release. Major sponsors of the 2014 Dickens of a Ride include RCB Bank, Walmart, Bike About Bicycles, Melton Sales and Boomarang Diner. Many thanks to each of them and to each of the riders who help make Dickens of a Ride one of the best in the state of Oklahoma.

How a Line of Credit Can Help Your Farm Credit Needs “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Ray McCartney, RCB Bank VP Loan Officer
Someone recently asked me when the slow time for agriculture is. Sounds like an easy question, right? After several minutes of careful consideration, I decided that the correct answer is most definitely, “It depends.” Some farm families say that there are no slow times. There are just busy and busier times. Those dairy cows still need to be milked and fed seven days a week. Poultry producers use most of their two-to-three week break between flocks to prepare for the next. Ranchers continue to make regular inspections on their herds, checking on herd health and new calves as well as a hundred other things. Of the four seasons, fall may offer a bit of a break for some farmers, but it’s still a busy time for many who have soybeans to harvest, fall calves to check, and wheat and winter pastures to drill. Fall is also a good time to visit about Farm Operating Lines of Credit (LOC), which
purchasing young calves in the spring to graze through the summer. Loan proceeds advanced from the LOC can be used to purchase the calves, medication, and feed, and will be paid back after the cattle are sold in the fall. It’s also good to remember that interest is only paid on the outstanding balance, not the
entire face amount of the loan. A line of credit is a tool, just like a grease gun or a tractor. Used as directed, it can bridge the timing gap between an expense and the expected pay day. It requires some budgeting and planning skills to pay these loans down each year, but it can provide a credit answer to some of those farm income/expense
can help farmers with seasonal or unexpected expenses. A lot of farmers and ranchers have discovered that an LOC is an effective way to bridge the gap between seasonal expenses and seasonal income. Here’s how it works. Let’s say that a farm family no-tills 80 acres of wheat or ryegrass for pasture (a planned farm expense) every fall, but they don’t want to sell their calves (a planned farm income) until later. This creates a gap between a needed expense and the planned income. If they have a Farm Operating Line of Credit, they can advance $5,200 (plus or minus) from their already approved and processed line of credit and be ready to pay for the seed and fertilizer, and reserve the spreader. After they sell their calf crop, they pay on the line of credit. Another popular use RCB Bank Loan Officer Ray McCartney (left) with Merl Troyer, for a line of credit is for farmer. Connecting Children with the Loving Homes They Deserve TFI Family Connections LLC expands Oklahoma services.
By Christopher Davis
It is no secret that our state has a crisis when it comes to providing resources and safe homes for displaced children, but the numbers can be paralyzing. “There are 12,025 children in out of home care, with less than 2,000 foster homes statewide in Oklahoma,” explains Rachelle Roosevelt, executive director of TFI Family Connections LLC. In Tulsa County alone, only 235 foster homes are certified, while more than 1,800 children are in need of placement. Surrounding communities’ statistics are hardly more optimistic. “A large number of children in OKDHS custody are placed in shelter care, even as young as 5 and 6 years of age,” Roosevelt explains. “These children should have a safe family home to live in.” TFI Family Connections LLC is a private not-for-profit organization providing services and support for foster children and families across Oklahoma. In partnership with OKDHS and other related departments,
Shenelle Flowers and Michele Rosdahl of TFI Family Connections.
the organization is expanding its reach while maintaining a deep commitment to quality care. Roosevelt and the staff at TFI are digging in and leading the way in the ongoing struggle to recruit families willing to place children in positive, loving homes. Currently serving about 100 children and 68 certified families, the organization is also working with another
100 families in the process of getting certified in the state. Such anticipated expansion may sound like a lot, but there is still a great need for more foster families in Oklahoma. Roosevelt says the need for homes extends to any age, from 0 to 21. She adds, “While 76 percent of children in care are under the age of 10, the hardest to find placement for are teenagers.”
Potential foster parents must go through a process that includes assessments, background check and 27 hours of training. Along the way, a worker will meet with new foster parents to develop a home study, which will provide the basis for matching a child with your household. After the home study, the process is mainly paperwork. Once contracts are signed, DHS reviews and approves the contracts, after which children are able to be placed in your home. However, it all begins with completing an initial application. Those interested in supporting TFI, but are unable to provide a home environment, are encouraged to consider donating time or resources to the endeavor. Volunteers are always welcome, as are donations. Support for sports, art classes, and musical instruments is especially helpful. School supplies and hygiene items, too, go a long way toward the effort to help children in foster care. For babies and young children, diapers and pull-ups, formula and baby
food is all greatly appreciated. As the holiday season comes into view, consider donating Christmas gifts. With state and federal budgets always in danger of cuts, resources for recruitment efforts are elusive, which is why TFI Family Connections hopes our community steps in to spread the word and get involved. If you or someone you know might be interested in sharing a home, please contact the organization. Rachelle Roosevelt and the TFI staff provide a wealth of information about the application process and are ready to help guide potential foster parents and volunteers to the most effective path to supporting displaced children.
