The Name Says It All Dun-Rite Roofing is an established roofing company with a desire to please. By Duane Blankenship
Jim Murr, president of DunRite Roofing, says the company was established in 1992 as a small business providing roofing services for mostly “new construction” home builders. Today the company has multiple roofing crews that provide roofs for both new construction and complete tear off and roof replacements, including wind and hail repair, as well
as seamless guttering. They are members of the Oklahoma Roofing Contractors Association (ORCA), Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa, and work with Habitat for Humanity. Jim’s philosophy has always been to treat his customers as he himself would like to be treated. “One of my biggest annoyances is high-
pressure salesmen. I assure you, we value any opportunity to quote your roofing job and your project is very important to us. But once we’ve met with you and have provided a free estimate and proposal, we will not keep contacting you unless you request that we do so.” Dun-Rite Roofing has served customers throughout (continued on page 26)

Straight Talk about Adult Braces Invisalign™ offers adult patients an embarrassment-free way to straighten their teeth. By Lorrie Ward
Dr. Voto (left) and Dr. Drake beside the digital X-ray machine.
Have you ever looked at your smile and perceived an imperfection, only to think, “It’s too late to do anything about that now. I’m past the age for braces”? Maybe you associate braces with adolescence and feel that having reached adulthood, you must now simply live with any cosmetic issues that bother you. Perhaps your issues are more pragmatic, as
you endure headaches and other pain associated with a misaligned bite, but you still are self-conscious and anxious about the idea of getting braces. According to Dr. Gene Drake and Dr. Jayson Voto of Drake & Voto Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, you can now put some of your misgivings to rest. They offer patients the option of
Invisalign™, braces that are imperceptible to the naked eye. The doctors explain that the decision between traditional braces and Invisalign™ is made on an individual basis, depending on the needs of the patient, but they have found that many patients, especially adults, gravitate toward Invisalign™. “I see many patients who (continued on page 26)

For just about anyone older than 30, childhood memories typically include being sent outside to play with strict instructions not to return until the streetlights turn on. Of course, for a variety of reasons (technology and safety, for example), these cultural memories are an endangered species. Video
games mimic physical activities and sports. Smartphones offer instant access to movies and TV shows in the car, at the grocery store and anywhere else a phone signal permeates. It seems like the biggest challenge for parents nowadays is mitigating how much “screen time” children
indulge in while gently nudging them to play outside. Camp Courage offers children an attractive outlet combining fun with the outdoors in a positive environment that instills a love for nature, and builds confidence and friendships for life. “We provide a way to (continued on page 26)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
A GENEROUS HEART BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Most of the time folks think about generosity as giving away things or money. Generosity actually means lots of things. The kind of generosity I am talking about here can take the form of encouragement, forgiveness, being deeply present for a friend during a difficult time, giving away the credit for an idea or success, giving a powerful voice to someone who feels powerless, recognizing the strength and character of another, the gift of your time, and yes, sometimes giving money or resources anonymously, with no need for recognition. I have worked on oodles of boards for charitable organizations over the years. We raised lots of money and that’s great. However, I have learned that true generosity is a different animal altogether. It comes from an inner fire to make a difference in the world, to step up to the plate when there is a pressing need and commit to doing what we can to help. True generosity changes the life of not only the receiver but also the giver. This generosity can change our world. A few years ago, Ken (my husband)
and I created a program called Character Coin. The idea was to watch for folks doing something kind or positive and give them a Character Coin. The giver was to catch someone doing something good, give them the coin, tell them why, and ask them to pass it on! It’s a pay it forward type of idea. We minted 30,000 of these coins and gave them out to teachers, kids, city leaders, and service men and women. What happened next truly changed our lives and how we saw people and our community. We heard stories about coins being passed from hundreds of folks both young and old. We heard the impact that it made on their lives. We were blessed to witness what happens when one person simply recognizes the strength and character of another. It was especially incredible to watch how
contagious this generosity “of recognizing another and giving a compliment” was. Just last week, we had someone call the office requesting another coin to give out to someone. The story they told us warmed our hearts all over again. So much so that we have committed to mint 10,000 more coins. If you need some, stop by the office. They are here for the taking. The story I tell you here is not about the coins. It’s not about us. It’s about trying to inspire you to create this amazing experience of generosity in your own heart. Commit to looking for opportunities with friends, neighbors, and strangers where you can be a blessing and be generous. You do not have to be rich to give generously. The miracle is this…the more you share, the more you have.

SSaving for a Rainy Day RCB Bank offers tips for building an emergency fund.
By Jocelyn Wood
Life happens. Sometimes it happens according to plan. Occasionally, an unforeseen rain shower pours down – a busted water pipe, a broken down car, a job loss. Though we cannot forecast the unexpected expenses that pop up after a downpour, we can open an umbrella to shield us from dipping into debt. Tara Depperschmidt, of RCB Bank, and her husband use a simple strategy to build their rainy day fund for emergencies. It’s based on a single principle: pay yourself first. “When my husband and I first got married, he was in school and we were living payday to payday,” said Depperschmidt. “We knew that if something came up and we needed extra funds, we would be in a great deal of trouble, so we thought we better think of some creative ways to try to save a little bit of money.” Their creative thinking led to a solution that required only a small change in their budgeting habits. To start, they figured out what their
lowest paychecks would be each payday and used that as the base of their budget. “If $500 is my base budget and I made $525 on a paycheck, I’d set aside the $25,” said Depperschmidt. “We already determined we could survive on the $500, so why not pretend we don't have the $25 and save it for an emergency?” When their paychecks increase, for example to $550, they increase their savings to $50. “I figure I have managed with $500 all this time, so why not continue to set aside the extra money?” Depperschmidt admits it’s a mental issue to make certain you put aside the money. When she sits down on payday to look over her bills, first and foremost, she pays herself. “Saving money is never a fun thing to do but once you really get it in your mind that it’s the right thing to do, and when an unexpected expense comes up and you can cover it debt-free, makes it a great thing to do,” Depperschmidt said.
There are numerous banking products that can help a person save – checking and savings accounts, money market accounts, 30-day CDs – but it truly depends on individual circumstances when it comes to choosing which one will work best for you. If you’re unsure, the best thing to do is speak with a professional banker. “Something, anything you save is better than nothing,” said Depperschmidt. “I have two checking accounts and one savings. One checking is my everyday account which I use for everything. The second checking account is used for saving for specific reasons, like an upcoming vacation. My savings account is for emergencies only, money that I want limited access to.” To learn more about how RCB Bank’s products and services can not only help you save for a rainy day, but reward you in the process, stop by your local RCB Bank and chat with one of our friendly bankers. “Sherlock Holmes” at Stone Canyon Elementary, My Dear Watson Owasso Community Theatre Company presents production filled with intrigue and action April 10-12.
By Kim Thornhill
Owasso Community Theatre Company’s production of “Sherlock Holmes” will be an entertaining performance full of romance, mystery, action, and danger. As the story unfolds, Alice Faulkner has letters written by a girl that’s now deceased. These letters will cause grave international problems if put in the wrong hands. The notorious villain, Professor Moriarty, wants the
letters. Moriarty’s gang travels to London on their quest, and Sherlock Holmes comes to the rescue. The detective wants to put a stop to the professor’s sinister plan. Or is he too late? Come out to the show April 10, 11, and 12 and find out. The performances will take place on the stage at Stone Canyon Elementary, located at 7305 N. 177th E.
Ave. in Owasso. Shows will be held nightly at 7 p.m. with a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. Tim Kelly’s adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective story will make audiences laugh, cheer, and boo as the story unfolds. Fans of Sherlock Holmes may be interested to know that this show combines elements from three Sherlock stories: “A Study in Scarlet,”

“A Scandal in Bohemia,” and “The Final Problem.” OCTC hosted auditions in February. Experience was not required to audition, and the talented cast consists of many actors new to OCTC. Perhaps the most intriguing cast member is Paul Henry, who will portray the villain, Professor Moriarty. Henry is new to the OCTC stage, but has experience portraying a variety of English characters, including a gentleman in “A Christmas Carol,” Mr. Brownlow in “Oliver!”, and Frank Doel in “84 Charing Cross Road.” “I have long been a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, and I have been reading them ever since I read the entire canon when I was in elementary school,” said Henry. “I have also seen almost all the movies and TV shows made over the years. Moriarty is a very good role for me.” Another newcomer to the OCTC stage is Hunter Cates. He’ll play the role of Sherlock Holmes. “I’ve wanted to play Sherlock Holmes for as long as I’ve
Page 7
been acting,” said Cates. “I stumbled onto the audition notice about three weeks before the date. I was in the right place at the right time.” Cates has an interesting outlook when talking about his character. “Sherlock can be cold, aloof, unfriendly, even a bit scary,” said Cates. “He’s always going to use his considerable powers on the side of good.” Chelsie Goodnight will play Alice. She's also new to OCTC’s stage. “There is nothing like being in a live show,” said Goodnight. “The most exciting part is watching the audience respond with a laugh or gasp – it makes all the hard work we put into it so worth it.” Get advanced $8 tickets at www.octok.org. Tickets at the door will be $12 for adults and $10 for seniors (age 55+) and students. OCTC will be hosting its first annual Variety Show June 14 at the Enerje Event Center in Owasso. This will be a community showcase of talent. Stay tuned to www.octok.org or like OCTC on Facebook for the latest information.

There will also be an Air Force game zone and a rock climbing wall. In addition, Health Zone of Saint Francis will be offering free health screenings to families and children of all ages. This will be the fifth collegiate level Strongman competition facilitated by Greg McCann, founder and executive director of Living Well Ministries; Brad Johnson, retired professional Strongman; and Steven Morales, personal trainer. Previous collegiate competitions include Oklahoma State University and Tulsa Community College. Greg McCann has served as a health and fitness professional for the last 29 years for the U.S. Peace Corps, Health Zone, and TCC. Brad Johnson held third and fourth place for the United States in the professional Strongman lightweight division over his five-year career. He was featured on the BBC/Discovery Channel TV show “Last One Standing,”
and he is currently working on a non-profit wellness mentoring program for kids. The competition will be split into three weight divisions: male 210 pounds and above, male 209 pounds and below, and a female division. Weigh-ins will begin at 9 a.m. in the Mabee Center South Lobby and events will start at 10 a.m. Events include: Culligan water jug load, barrel toss, truck pull (Culligan water truck, TPD Special Weapons vehicle, and TFP Grass Rig), and a medley including farmer’s walk, yoke walk, and tire flip. Finalists will earn their spot in an elimination tug-o-war round. Judging will be based on technique and time/distance for each event. Each participant will receive a T-shirt with registration. Prizes will be awarded to the top three competitors in each division. Snacks and drinks will be available for each participant during breaks. Immediately following the main competition will be separate Team Challenges as police and fire fighters battle out their badges in a heated Tug-O-War and Double Fire Truck Team Pull.

PPurses of Hope Attend the silent auction event benefitting local pediatric cancer patients on Sunday, April 6.
By Sheryl Sowell
Pierce Phillips, a beautiful baby boy with captivating blue eyes, was born on July 30, 2007 to Scott and Brandi Phillips. Pierce was an easygoing child, and people often referred to him as an old soul because of his demeanor and eyes that seemed to be full of wisdom. At 13 months old, Pierce was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an especially deadly form of cancer. Pierce underwent several forms of treatment including high dose chemotherapy, surgeries,

radiation and immunotherapy. After these aggressive treatments, Pierce achieved NED status; no evidence of cancer was detected. His family enjoyed the next few months at their home in Tulsa with their healthy son. Unfortunately, Pierce’s disease was highly relentless and returned. In the arms of his mother and surrounded by family, Pierce earned his angel wings on October 9, 2009. Childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly, and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region. One in 133 children will have been diagnosed with cancer by the time they reach the age of 20. Each year, 4,000 children die from cancer – 11 children every single day, every single year. Since 2010, Pierce Phillips Charity, started by Scott and Brandi in memory of their son, has helped fund three Phase 1 Clinical Trials, currently being conducted at various cancer research centers throughout the United States, and supported

numerous Tulsa families with children who are fighting cancer. Pierce’s grandmother, Margie Day, created the Purses of Hope event five years to help local families in need of assistance during this emotionally and financially draining time. “When a child battles cancer, it is very expensive. The silent auction event raises money to help families in any way that they need it, including house and car payments, gas cards and medications. Each family is allowed to apply for financial help once a year,” says Margie. “My girlfriends Cynthia Hoffman, Donna Peabody and Patricia Phillips (Pierce’s other grandmother) are the best and really are the ones that make this happen. They supply and donate all the food and their time. If it were not for them, there is no way this event could take place.” The 5th annual Purses of Hope will be held Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Bar H Vista Farm in Mounds, 20 minutes south of Tulsa.

Take Highway 75 South; turn east on 181st Street, right on Lewis, and go a half-mile to the large white fence and follow the road to the barn.
Attendees will enjoy refreshments while bidding on their favorites among 50+ purses in the silent auction. “The purses are either new or gently used and include brands like Coach and Kate Spade,” says Margie. “There is a purse for every style and price range.” All proceeds will provide financial support for area pediatric cancer patients via the Pierce Phillips Charity Grant Program. In addition, the event will help fund Bingo Night and Candy Bar Night, a bi-weekly program at St. Francis Children’s Hospital. Those who bring a new toy to Purses of Hope will be entered into the drawing for a variety of door prizes. The toys collected will be distributed during Bingo Nights. “We need toys for

Welcome to the first installment of Go Downtown with Value News! Every month will highlight entertainment, dining and other activities in Downtown Tulsa, helping readers make the most of their time and money in each district. By Christopher Davis Downtown Tulsa is bursting with original music and art, quirky shops, exciting dining options, and plays host to several professional sports teams and regular concerts from big name performers.
5K, runners are encouraged to dress in costume and race against the Elote Luchadores, dodging “urban obstacles.”
Blue Dome District BOK Center The BOK Center continues to draw large crowds and top acts, selling over 400,000 concert tickets in 2013. Things begin to heat up in April, as Kings of Leon take the stage on April 8 and George Strait on April 19. Also, the Oklahoma Defenders, Tulsa’s professional indoor football team, takes on the Bloomington Edge on April 12 and the Wichita Wild on April 26. Visit www.bokcenter.com for tickets and details on all events and concerts.
Brady Arts District The Brady Arts District is home to some of Tulsa’s best music venues, art galleries and dining. While in the area, stop by Chimera for a bite to eat and a drink before the show. Chimera, run by two native Tulsans and located at 212 N. Main St., serves unique food, coffee and beverages. Touting a menu suitable for vegans, vegetarians or carnivores, everyone is sure to leave with a full stomach and smile on their face. In addition to an extensive wine and beer list, they serve cocktails and award-winning coffee.
Deco District At the heart of Downtown Tulsa is the Deco District. Home to beautifully preserved art deco buildings, this district has witnessed renewed interest lately. Perfect for a date night or a mini tour for visiting friends, soak up some of the charm of 1920s architecture and grab a bite. Elote Café & Catering, located at 514 S. Boston Ave, is widely credited with spearheading the Deco District Revival. This funky, hip “fresh Mex” restaurant embodies the culture of downtown. Specializing in Mexican cuisine made from locallysourced ingredients, Elote is healthy and fun. Over the years, the restaurant added lucha libre wrestling (a style of wrestling popular in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, in which the wrestlers wear masks and boast colorful personalities) to its list of events, and it stuck. Today, Elote hosts regular wrestling matches, starring its own cast of luchador wrestlers. On Saturday, April 5 at 5 p.m., Elote hosts the annual Luchador Run, benefitting the Tulsa YMCA. Featuring a one mile fun run and a
Blue Dome District, which surrounds the intersection of Elgin and 2nd, blends entertainment, dining and shopping. Offering something for everyone, the district is a hub of excitement day and night. Located at 119 S. Detroit Ave., Dwelling Spaces is a quirky, Tulsa-centric gift shop that specializes in Oklahoma music, art, coffee and…robots. On any given weekend, one is equally likely to find live music, an art exhibit or book signing, as the store has become a popular stop for Okie creative-types. Just around the corner is the latest venture from Tulsa City Councilman and entrepreneur Blake Ewing. White Flag, located at 116 S. Elgin, serving hamburgers and drinks, is quickly becoming a popular venue for live music in the district. To view a menu and learn more about events, visit www.whiteflagtulsa.com.

This year’s Luchador Run hosted by Elote will be Saturday, April 5.
Just north of Blue Dome District, at 201 N. Elgin, is ONEOK Field, home to the Tulsa Drillers. The Drillers host Corpus Christi on Thursday, April 3, for opening night, followed by games against San Antonio and Arkansas throughout the month. With tickets starting at $5 (with $2 lawn tickets on Tuesdays), a baseball game downtown is a fun and affordable family outing. Visit www.milb.com for game schedule and tickets.
Guthrie Green Just across from the ball field, at 111 E. Brady St., is Guthrie Green – a wide open lawn designed for community events. April marks the beginning of the Sunday Market, a farmers market that runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday until the end of October. Guthrie Green showcases live music, as well. On Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m. catch Chamber Music Tulsa present “Bohemian” Rhapsody. The concert features the American String Quartet performing music with bohemian connections and exploring themes of passion, jealousy, betrayal, birdsong, folk dances, trains, homesickness and more. On Sunday, April 27, get a double dose of music. Starting at 2 p.m., Horton Records presents Shinyribs, Pilgrim and Honeylark. World Malaria Day Is April 25th W Kairos10 celebrates past success and continues its efforts in the fight against malaria.
By Stephanie Reed
Malaria is a killer, a killer that claims one child’s life per minute. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012 alone, malaria claimed the lives of 627,000 people, 86 percent of which were children, with a total of 207 million cases reported. These statistics tell us two very important things. The first – malaria is a vicious disease, and the
second – malaria is preventable and curable. Malaria is not a disease most Americans are familiar with. It is the name of a faraway sickness of little to no consequence for most of us. Unfortunately, that is simply not the case. In America, an average of 1,500 cases of malaria are reported annually, though the disease was eradicated in the 1950s.
Marked by vomiting, body aches, fever, and, if left untreated, death, malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites. Symptoms begin to occur seven to 30 days after infection; if antimalarial drugs have been taken, symptoms may take weeks or even months to manifest, often leading to misdiagnosis. The disease can lay dormant in the liver and reactivate
A Ghanaian boy receives a mosquito net, courtesy of Kairos10, that could very well save his life and the lives of family members.
after periods of dormancy for two to even four years. Pregnant women and children under the age of five are particularly susceptible. Researchers have found that the best way to fight malaria is to prevent it. Mosquito nets, which shelter and protect five people, have proven especially effective. The problem – in the last year, major distributors have decreased the number of nets distributed, and the death toll has risen. According to WHO, the net distribution total is down 50 percent from 2010. The solution – local nonprofits are raising money to distribute nets in affected areas, and we can help. Phyllis Morris is one such individual who is helping; together with Katheryn Pennington, they founded Kairos10, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting malaria in Ghana. “This mission is so close to my heart. As a parent, when you see your children suffer, you will do anything to help ease their pain. We are so fortunate to have qualified doctors and hospitals, but so many families in Ghana have to watch their babies suffer and die. I can’t abide by that – not when there is something
that I can do to help prevent the illness,” explains Phyllis, a nurse. Kairos10 purchases Ghanaian beads made from recycled glass, vinyl records, bones, and brass from local merchants and pays native women to make jewelry. The jewelry is then sold in the United States, and the proceeds are used to purchase and distribute insecticidetreated bed nets. Thus far, Kairos10 has succeeded in protecting over 110,000 people from malaria through the distribution of mosquito nets. This April, in honor of World Malaria Day, we can all be heroes. Armed with the knowledge that malaria is not a sickness of long ago, we can all join in the fight to eradicate this killer. For more information on jewelry sales or to get involved, contact Kairos10.

BBathe in Safety Walk-in tubs and showers provide relaxation to those with limited mobility.

affordable walk-in tubs and walk-in showers. Who doesn’t enjoy the simple pleasure in taking the time to relax with a warm bath and letting the pressing moments of the day simply pass away for the moment? The aches and pains many of us feel now that we’ve grown older seem to subside with the refreshing warmth provided by spending time in the water. Unfortunately for many aging Americans with mobility issues, stepping into a bath can result in slipping and falling into the tub or onto the floor. This fear of falling has made the simple act of bathing and its therapeutic benefits something many no longer feel comfortable doing. Designed for Seniors® recently partnered with Jacuzzi®, the company we all know as having perfected hydrotherapy. “Together, they have created walk-in tubs and showers that offer more than just safe bathing, peace-ofmind and independence. The resulting products can actually help us feel better,” said Greg. “We recommend

several quality tub and shower offerings from Jacuzzi® and Luxury Bath that are easy to access even by wheelchair for those with limited mobility.” Although these innovative new bath products are ideal for seniors, they also advance the quality of life for any individual. Retirement may be many years away for you, but you can still benefit from a remodeling of your bathroom that will begin serving you now throughout your senior years. “Customers are excited when they discover that we have products that successfully combine the safety of a walkin bath tub with the benefits of a hot tub,” said Greg. “You can now have that experience, usually offered only by luxurious resorts, and you can enjoy it in the privacy of your own home whenever you desire.” Now is a great time to be remodeling. Community Builders offers 12 months “same as cash” or easy low
payment plans tailored to your budget. Remodeling can add value to your home and is something your family will enjoy well into your future. Greg serves on the National Board of Advisors for GE Home Improvement Lending. His company is a professional organization that has been recognized nationally with the Business Ethics Award presented by the National Association of Siding and Window Dealers. You can review their stellar record with the BBB and the Greater Tulsa Home Builders Association. Community Builders is eager to earn your business and trust. For more information, contact

OOne Stop Western Shop Mock Brothers Saddlery is a third generation business specializing in saddles, tack, boots and Western wear.
By Duane Blankenship
Mock Brothers Saddlery is a family-owned and operated business where you’ll find all your Western needs. The business is owned by brothers Brett and Greg Mock. “Mock Brothers was established in 1941 by our granddad and great uncle,” said Brett, “and
the store was first located by the old Tulsa stock yards on Charles Page Boulevard.” The boys’ dad, Albert Jr. (aka Buz), and his brother, Richard, took over the business in 1965. “Greg and I literally grew up at the stock yards and the store,” said
Brett. “We were kept busy each summer washin’ saddles and swattin’ flies to keep out of trouble.” Mock Brothers Saddlery moved to its current location west of Tulsa and Sand Springs in 1976, and Brett and Greg bought their

www.ValueNews.com uncle’s shares of the business in 1984 to become the third generation of Mock brothers to own and operate Mock Brothers Saddlery. Mock Brothers is a fullservice saddle and tack shop. They sell new and used Western saddles and always have hundreds in stock. Their most popular brands are Mock Brothers, Dale Martin, Billy Cook and HR. Tack items include bits, head sets, halters, breast collars, rodeo gear, spurs, leather goods, ropes and more. While teaching his sons to make custom saddles, Albert Jr. said, “When you’re working with very sharp knives you’re gonna cut yourself. The number one saddle maker’s rule is: Don’t bleed on the leather.” Dale Westmoreland has been making saddles for Mock Brothers since the ’70s and still works in his grandfather’s shop with his tools. Dale's father and grandfather both made saddles for the company. When you’re looking for quality Western style merchandise, visit Mock Brothers. They carry men’s, women’s and children’s boots, hats and clothing. Hats include preferred brands of Resistol and American, and Brett can put the perfect crease of your choosing in any hat. Boot makers include Tony Lama, Justin, Anderson, Bean, Twisted X, and Olathe in a broad range of sizes, colors and styles, from cowboy
ranch boots to dress boots. You may also want to check out their work boots. Mock Brothers carries a big variety of popular brands of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing including shirts, jeans, vests, scarves, belts, buckles and more. Wellknown women’s brands are Miss Me, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Adiktd. Men’s jeans include names like Cinch and Wrangler. They have a great selection of ladies’ tops and shirts for men. Mock Brothers is a store where you’ll find yourself feeling like a kid turned loose in a candy shop. It’s a cool place to spend time looking at merchandise and checking out all the historical photographs and memorabilia. Over the past 73 years, many film stars, rodeo champions and country singers have visited – and still visit –Mock Brothers Saddlery. You’ll enjoy looking at their posters and signed photographs and seeing some of the custom saddles that were made by the original Mock Brothers back in the ’40s.

SShow Off Your Sweet Ride Register your car or truck now for the 25th annual Route 66 Blowout scheduled for June 7 in Sapulpa.
By Duane Blankenship
Twenty-five years ago, Cindy McDonald fostered the idea of having a car and truck show in downtown Sapulpa. She called some friends to get their reactions and the rest is history. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Route 66 Blowout. The first year’s event in 1989 featured 35 cars and one food vendor. On June 7, the extravaganza will feature
more than 300 cars and trucks, numerous food vendors, crafts and general merchandise vendors, and much more. Cindy McDonald has been active with Sapulpa Main Street for 25 years and became executive director of the organization in June, 2013. “The Oklahoma Main Street Association was the catalyst that sparked our
downtown program. Sapulpa Main Street’s goal is to preserve the past, promote the present and protect the future,” says Cindy. Any vehicle make, model, car or truck may be registered in the Route 66 Blowout, which has dozens of classes and categories. There are classes, by year, for Corvette, Mustang, Classic Chevy, Camaro, up to ’31 stock and modified, cruiser, import and

many more. There will be over 100 trophies awarded, and each class will be independently judged. Trophies will be presented to the top three in each class and $1,000 will be awarded in cash and prizes. Registration forms are available now or you may register from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. the morning of the event. Judging is scheduled for 11 a.m. and award presentations at 3 p.m. While you’re attending the event, be sure to purchase a ticket for a chance to win a GM Performance Crate Engine. The raffle prize is a 350 HO Base crate engine that will add some V8 muscle to your older vehicle restoration. Tickets will be available at TTCU Sapulpa Branch and at the Sapulpa Main Street office. The Route 66 Blowout will host a live deejay, an arts and crafts fair and lots of children’s activities. While you’re in Downtown Sapulpa you’ll have the opportunity to take a tour of the Sapulpa Historical Museum and the Star Trolley Car display. You’ll also want to visit
Sapulpa’s many downtown shops and restaurants. The Sapulpa Arts Route 66 Art Show & Sale will coincide with the car show. “Sapulpa Arts works to promote the arts and humanities in the Sapulpa area so that the artistic heritage and creativity of all people may find expression, growth and visibility,” said Arts Director Sheri IshmaelWaldrop. The Art Show & Sale is designed to promote amateur and professional area artists. For show information, please contact Sheri at (918) 224-0170 or sapulpaarts@gmail.com. EEggstraordinary Easter Gifts Shop The Nut House on historic Route 66 for unique candy and gifts.
By Carol Beck-Round
Easter is around the corner and if you want to add delicious goodies and unique items to your baskets or purchase a gift for someone special, The Nut House on historic Route 66 is the place to go. The vast array of products available at one of Claremore’s most famous destinations won’t be found in your local grocery store or any big-box store. Many are one-of-a-kind, made-in-house products that will have you returning time and again to check out the new offerings – and you’ll never leave empty handed, even if it’s just for a piece of the decadent, twoinch thick, quarter-pound squares of fudge. Some customers just brake for the fudge and “many look like they’re having fudge withdrawals when they walk through the doors,” laughs Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House. With over 18 different flavors of fudge available six days a week, it’s no wonder The Nut House has earned a reputation for the best homemade fudge in the area. “We will be offering some special fudge for Easter along with chocolate-covered marshmallows,” says Hazel. “We make our own marshmallows which are heads above what you buy at the grocery store. Our confections are fresh with a
really nice texture – they’re soft, not stretchy – and they are larger than what you find in a grocery store.” The marshmallow treats will also be decorated for Easter. “They’re great to put in a child’s Easter basket or as a gift to a friend,” she adds. Other wonderful Easter ideas include chocolatecovered strawberries and Peeps dipped in chocolate and decorated for Easter. “After dipping them in chocolate, we dress them up like they’re going to church,” says Hazel. “They’re really cute.” The Nut House also has an assortment of other Easter candy, stuffed animals, jewelry, candles, car charms and items of a spiritual nature that make great gifts or that can be added to a special basket for gift-giving. At The Nut House, one of the popular gifts available is personalized Easter baskets. Baskets, which run from $30 and up, are created more for adult gift-giving, according to Hazel. “We offer baskets that are often built around a sentimental item. For example, we’ve had customers bring in the photo of an ultrasound to announce to their family members that they are expecting a baby,” she says. “The cost varies based on the items a customer purchases here to
include in their basket.” While you’re shopping for Easter goodies at The Nut House, don’t forget to check out Hot Mama’s Deli, where you can select from a variety of sandwiches, salads, sides and sweet treats. A lunch combo is offered each day. “We also have daily specials with offerings like beans and cornbread and Hobo Tacos. “All of our food is homecooked,” Hazel adds. On Saturday, April 5 beginning at 10 a.m., a Day of Tasting is planned with free food sampling of new
products available at The Nut House. “We’ll be offering a variety of new items, including Cowboy Tom’s Gluten-Free Pancake Mixes,” says Hazel. “They are the lightest, fluffiest and most wholesome flapjacks I’ve ever tasted. They’re easy to make and so yummy.”On Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, The Nut House will host a Consignment Sale in Pecan Hall with a variety of items at great prices. Hazel adds that customers should not be discouraged by the highway
construction going on in front of the business. “It’s not difficult to get in because there’s a turn lane that leads you right into our driveway,” she adds. “We’re open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day but Sunday.” For more information, contact

Other activities slated for the evening’s Sip, Savor & Shop include the annual Lilac Express Box Car Art that is sponsored by BNSF Railway. The 4th grade art project is a great way for our teachers to educate their classes about the importance of rail history in Oklahoma in celebration of National Train Month. Students from Catalayah, Claremont, Roosa and Westside Elementary schools are participating. The public is invited to vote for their favorite and the winning class will receive a $100 gift card. The art will be displayed in downtown during the Taste of Claremore event. “Union Pacific Railroad will also be sponsoring Banner Tracks flag art created by students in the private and home school arenas. The project focus is to emphasize the
importance of railroad safety,” said Committee Chair Denise Lawrence. Downtown Main Street will be decorated with the flags, and the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite flag. The winner will receive a $100 gift card and will be decided also by attendees voting for their favorites. One of the event highlights will be the unveiling of a new mural in downtown. The mural will be the second artwork commissioned by Claremore Main Street with artist Steve Stephens and sponsored by Union Pacific Railroad. The 10’ by 16’ mural will be placed on the east wall of Bike-About at 300 W. Will Rogers. The evening event will also feature a variety of entertainment with sidewalk performers including singers, musicians, and maybe a surprise or two for sure! Don’t miss these talented individuals. Performances will take place during the event from 6 to 9 p.m. Don’t miss the great shopping, sampling, sidewalk entertainment, art, regional authors who will be on hand for book signings, and clearly more in beautiful downtown Claremore.

that Dun-Rite Roofing uses only the highest quality materials, and their roofers are proficient in installing everything from standing seam metal roofing, to all types of composition shingles. “Most of our employees have been with us for many years, and we stand behind the quality of their work with a five year ‘workmanship’ warranty, as well as whatever type of material warrantee is offered by the manufacturer,” says Jim. Dun-Rite Roofing is fully licensed and insured. You may recognize the well-known brands they carry: Tamko, GAF, Owens Corning, Malarkey and CertainTeed. With the storm season upon us, Jim cautions to be certain you know with whom you are contracting to do any repair work, making sure you’re talking with a locally established com-
pany, and not just some guy in a pickup that blew into town with the latest wind and hail storm. The Oklahoma Roofing Contractor Registration Act was developed to regulate the roofing industry and protect consumers from fraudulent contractors. Make sure your contractor is properly registered. Although Dun-Rite will be happy to assist you in filing any insurance claim, Jim says to be wary of any contractor wanting to file the claim for you. Every year, individuals and insurance companies are ripped off by fraudulent claims, leading to cancelled policies and higher premiums. Most companies can be found on the Better Business Bureau website as well as their ratings and reviews. The information is free and is a great way to gain knowledge about a potential contractor.
Jim Murr and Dun-Rite Roofing are proud of the A+ record they’ve maintained with the BBB throughout the years. “When you need a roofing company, please keep Dun-Rite in mind,” said Jim. “We’ll be right here serving our friends and neighbors any time we’re needed.”

With encouragement and guidance from leaders and the small groups, children meet challenges and have fun, building self-esteem and confidence. Such experiences help prepare youngsters for their lives as adults, and parents notice improvement at school as well. The groups are small, with one leader per eight campers. Bringing Kids Back to Nature discover something new,” says Camp Courage founder and director Jennifer Hayes. She and her husband, Ronnie, started the nonprofit organization six years ago. Wanting to create a summertime environment where kids “are not stuck inside four walls,” as Hayes puts it, the couple of over 20 years has worked hard to bring their faith-based youth camp to life. Camp Courage is a sort of buffet of outdoor activity for children ages 5 to 13. The template, essentially, is to load up a bus full of kids and spend the day immersed in exploration and building confidence. With activities ranging from hikes, fishing and archery to swimming, canoeing and rock climbing, the children find themselves less drawn to the virtual world of TV and video games and, instead, enjoying the real

engage in different field trips every week, so signing their children up for the full summer will not be redundant. In fact, parents can even pick different weeks for children, so no need to choose between summer camp and family vacation. Hayes is excited about a new addition to this year’s program. Archery will be introduced for the first time at Camp Courage. Certified archery instructors will work with the children, teaching them about the sport and guiding them with form and aim. The sport reinforces Camp Courage themes, especially those of refocusing and concentrating on action. The symbolism of aiming for the target resonates with the spiritual side of Camp Courage as well. Registration is now open for summer day camp in
Owasso. Children are dropped off at “Base Camp” between 8:30 and 9 a.m., and spend the day making memories. Parents may pick them up between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Before and after care is available also. Sessions run throughout June and July, and into mid-August.

GGreen Grass Sooner, Not Later SoonerLawn has earned a reputation for quick results and healthy grass.
By Christopher Davis
SoonerLawn specializes in services designed to deliver quick results. For clients seeking lush, green grass, free of weeds and pests, look no further than SoonerLawn. Owned by U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton, SoonerLawn has revived and maintained lawns in the Tulsa area for 10 years. With a portfolio of accounts ranging from commercial to residential, there are plenty of success stories related to their six-step lawn care program. Among the happy customers is the Reserve at Battle Creek, where the presi-
dent and landscaping chairman voices his satisfaction with SoonerLawn. But with lawns’ colors speak louder than words. Wherever one sees SoonerLawn trucks working, green grass will be found sooner, not later. The key to SoonerLawn’s success is striking the right balance of fertilizers and weed control, as well as pest control. Fertilization and weed control are both crucial to maintaining a healthy, green lawn. Anyone who has taken the DIY approach to lawn care is familiar with trial and
error in the yard. Too much fertilizer – or the wrong mixture – means the grass will burn up and die, effecting the exact opposite of the intended result. SoonerLawn will determine the proper right mix of fertilizer to ensure grass thrives with minimal effort on the owner’s part. “It is important to water following fertilization,” says Bolton. With proper fertilization and watering cycles, owners will see positive results. Within weeks, thick, healthy grass will be growing. But as healthy grass takes off, so can weeds.

Be proud of your lush, green lawn with the help of SoonerLawn.
SoonerLawn also discerns which herbicide to apply in order to control weeds, giving desired turf the best opportunity to grow without competition in the yard. As with fertilization, weed control is not a one-size-fits-all approach, requiring experts in order to do the job properly. SoonerLawn will assess which weeds are problems, in which areas, and apply appropriate mixtures and amounts to kill off weeds. Aeration is an often-overlooked process with lawn care. Essentially, aeration entails the creation of small holes underneath grass, allowing nutrients, oxygen and water to better reach the roots. Since most lawns serve as outdoor floors for kids, pets and fun activities, it does not take long for ground to get so compacted that grass cannot thrive. SoonerLawn uses a machine to systematically pull out small plugs of dirt, allowing roots to stretch out, breathe and feed much more comfortably. Bolton recommends aeration at least twice per year for most lawns. “Spring and fall are the ideal times for aeration,” he says. With fertilization, weed control and aeration in place, one may believe all that is left
to worry about is watering and mowing. However, pests can undo even the best efforts at lawn care. SoonerLawn provides pest control, giving grass the defense it needs against major enemies like ants, chinch bugs and moles. Though such battles can be frustrating and long-term, Bolton and his staff will apply insecticides or repellents to get the problem under control. No more brown patches. No more anthills, molehills or gopher mounds to interrupt the sea of green or disrupt lawn mowing. At the end of the day, establishing and maintaining a lush, green yard is the goal. SoonerLawn takes the fuss and effort away from the owner. With their expertise and equipment, they are prepared to take on the burden of assessing lawn care needs and executing the appropriate solutions.

Support beams that once sustained the weight of the season’s hay supply are now reclaimed to become massive table legs, bedposts and stretcher beams. Antiquated roof trusses and siding boards have become impressive doors, drawers and table tops. It’s a real treat to stroll through The Refuge Lifestyle and appreciate the unique collection of Green Gables furniture and other home furnishings and decorations. You don’t need a rustic-style home to utilize the furnishings found at The Refuge Lifestyle. “Our furniture is rustic,” said Clinton, “but it is very classy, of the highest quality and will fit in any home, whatever the style.” Customers building new homes or wanting to revitalize existing ones enjoy visiting with Clinton and Robin, who have lots of ideas to share about the beautiful works of masterful craftsmanship available that
will be enjoyed now and by future generations. Clinton and Robin are expressively thankful for all their customers, friends and family members who have faithfully supported The Refuge Lifestyle. “This year we are looking to expand our building so we can even better serve our community with our one-stop location for the finest in rustic furniture and home décor,” says Clinton. Watch for special events to be held throughout the year at The Refuge Lifestyle and make it a point to go by for a visit. Store hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

BBuilding with Pride Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns offers variety and top-grade work.
By Carol Beck-Round
Inola Portable Buildings has a reputation – a good one. According to owner Carl Parson, “Customers drive from Bristow, Sapulpa, Tulsa and beyond to purchase their portable buildings from us.” Whether you need a storage building, pole barn, loafing shed, metal garage, cabin or other portable building, Inola Portable
Buildings & Pole Barns can meet your needs. In business since 1998, they have earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. “We only use top-grade materials on everything we build,” says Parson, who before starting his company had been in the construction and roofing business for 20 years. His experience in that
field has carried over to the quality he delivers in every product his company makes, whether it is metal or wood. At the business, located off the north side of Highway 412 at 30355 S. 4230 Rd., you can browse through more than 50 displays available. Buildings can be delivered or built on location, but about 90 percent of the business’

work is done on location. “We’ve also built carports and RV covers as well as allmetal garages,” he adds. “We stay busy and can do custom work. If you have an idea for a building that you would like, just ask.” In the company’s 16-year history, “We have never had a complaint about our buildings,” says Parson. “Our business has grown through word of mouth. We started with two buildings when we opened and it just continues to grow each year even though we are located in an out-of-the-way place. We’ve found that if you do everything better than the next guy, you’ll stay busy.” While they do mainly residential work, the company has expanded – again by referrals – to include portable building projects at public schools in Claremore, Jay, Catoosa, Inola, Locust Grove and Tulsa, as well as businesses such as Arby’s. “We have built storage buildings for Arby’s all over northeastern Oklahoma,” he says. “We have also constructed portable buildings for the City of Tulsa.” Conventional or Dutch Barn portable buildings include treated skids along with treated floor joists on 16-inch centers, ¾-inch tongue and groove flooring, #2 stud grade materials, a 25year factory warranty on Smart trim, 25-year warranty on Smart panel siding, 30# felt paper and a 30-year warranty on Tamko shingles.
Extras, like steel doors, windows, 4-foot loft, work bench and a 4-foot treated ramp, are available at an additional charge. Sizes begin at 8x8 up to 16x24 and larger. Pole barns, which range in size from 24x24 to 40x60, include one walk-in door and one 9x8 overhead door. An additional door is available for an extra charge. The company offers a 40-year manufacturer’s warranty on the 29-gauge metal used in the pole barns and loafing sheds while the insulation comes with a manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. Also included in the base price is a 4-inch concrete slab with rebar 18-inch on center in floor and 10-foot sidewalls. “We can build a pole barn, concrete included, within a week,” says Parson. “We can complete a portable building – built on site – in one day.” Although they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Parson will meet with potential customers at a different time to accommodate their schedules. “They just need to give us a call and we can work it out.” The company also offers rent-to-own options.
