ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Should I Buy Gold? retirement planning.” (This one takes the cake!) • 2015: ISIS, Beginning of the End of Days, Fear of Interest Rates going up, Markets at All Time High, Crash is Imminent.

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

When folks start getting fearful of what they are seeing on television or hearing on the radio, this is a question I hear a lot. Gold is the “go to” investment for people when they are trying to “protect” themselves along with hiding cash in their mattress. There is this idea that if we were in the “end of days” that trading gold coins would become the method of commerce. However, I am of the opinion that if this type of catastrophic failure were upon us (and we weren’t among the first wave to go) that neither cash nor gold would be of much value. If anything, goats, water, and ammunition would be in high demand! Nearly every day I hear folks tell me about why they think they should not invest in the stock market right now. Some of these ideas seem to be relatively reasonable fears about investing, some not so much. The following are the most popular excuses I have heard over the last 16 years. See if you can relate to any of them. • 1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash all the world’s computers. “We will have no accounting of our money at the bank or on our brokerage statements!” • 2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “The market is crashing. It will never come back!” • 2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed both World Trade Centers and the hit the Pentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next. We need to have all of our money under a mattress at home!” • 2002: Corporate Accounting

Issues. “Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing have all betrayed investors therefore all companies are corrupt and we should not invest!” • 2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans! “This is the beginning of the end!” • 2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/ Global Financial Crisis. “ The banks are collapsing. There will be no more economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBC in a crisis! That’s another story all together!) • 2009: Worst recession since the Great Depression. “The market won’t come back for 20 years!” • 2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, U.S. Debt Ceiling. “ No one in the world is going to have any money! We are all going to hell in a handbasket!” • 2012: Presidential Election pending November 2012. “The U.S. deficit is so high that America can’t regain it’s financial strength!” • 2012: The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverse and we will all fall out into space. Therefore, there is no need for

Chances are some of these fears resonate with you. Emotionally we are always thinking of reasons not to invest in the stock market. Clearly these headlines and the fears that they create devise volatility in the stock market. The truth is the markets always climb a wall of worry. If you stick your head in the sand to avoid the fears and worry, the markets will pass you by. It matters where you are invested. It matters who you choose to help you. Find someone who can help you invest your money and manage the volatility. Find someone who can help you deal with your fears through common sense. We can help. In Home Senior Care With A Concierge Experience An agency owned by Tulsans for Tulsans.

By Deanna Rebro Seniors who want to live in their homes but cannot do everything for themselves now have a new and totally different alternative. My Choice In Home Senior Services is a premier personal care assistance and companion caregiver agency that tailors services to fit each client’s specific needs. Whether their needs are large or small, they literally can enjoy a concierge experience by having as little or as much help as they need in the areas they choose. Armella Glenn, agency owner and lifelong Tulsa resident, came up with the idea after studying the work of many national chains. The personal touch was missing. Care options seemed stereotyped. She began thinking, “What if…?” Her hometown knowledge of the many resources available to seniors in the Tulsa area, genuine love for aging people and business experience with her family led to My Choice. My Choice specializes in non-medical aspects of care giving with concierge services, care management and transitional services. Their service options are nearly endless, from the routine to the unusual and everything in between. They include companionship, transportation to medical or beauty shop appointments or social events, light housekeeping, laundry, meal planning and preparation, errand running, personal bathing and grooming assistance, dog walking, medication reminders, day Armella Glenn, owner and advocate for senior independence. trips, exercise, problem solving,

Providing the highest level of compassionate companion care and excellent home services for seniors and their families. Caregivers are background-checked drug tested, and matched specifically for each client.

home bill paying and help with incontinence. My Choice is proud to be among the pioneers in the new elder care field of transitional services. They help with admission, companionship while in care facilities, discharge procedures and transporting clients home and follow up appointments. All services start with a no obligation in home safety and fall prevention assessment of the client’s home. Safety is a critical part of the My Choice care program. “The client wants to stay home,” says Armella. “The family wants them to stay home safely.” A care manager identifies safety issues in the home and defines needs, expectations and desires with the client and family members or a guardian. Together they develop a specific Care Plan with the level of attention, ranging from 4 to 24 hours, and flexibility that is right for the client. “We want to relieve the pressure on the family,” she adds. So many couples are struggling with the demands of their children, their careers and now their aging parents. They truly care, but cannot be in all places. My Choice’s Wake Up and Tuck In service, a popular choice, provides breakfast, dinner, dishwashing, laundry and morning and evening assistance. Better yet, My Choice cost is much lower than an assisted living alternative. Another unique My Choice attribute is their preference survey. Every client indicates his or her

interests, habits and needs. Every My Choice caregiver fills out the same survey. “Our unique caregiver and client matching formula helps us to place the right caregiver with the right client,” explains Armella. There is common ground from the first day and a bond begins to form. My Choice In Home Senior Services is a licensed, bonded and insured agency. Caregivers hired by My Choice are employees and have been rigorously background checked on both a local and nationwide basis. These elite caregivers are thoroughly trained to excel at their duties, be observant and compassionate. A My Choice supervisor does a weekly check on the caregiver and client. A Care Plan book with daily entries remains in the client’s home. Whether a little or a lot of help is needed, routine or unique, My Choice In Home Senior Services is ready to help seniors live their lives to the fullest—in their own homes.

Replacement Driveways Done Right, Priced Right, On Time Satisfied customers tell the story.

By Deanna Rebro

A driveway that is pitted and stained, with grass growing between the cracks, instantly steals curb appeal from a home. Not to mention the safety hazard of walking over an uneven surface from tree roots under the drive. LCI Concrete can transform this unsightly mess into an attractive, maintenance-free driveway in just one to two days. That’s because LCI specializes in residential replacement driveways. They have been doing drives for 10 years. And, according to owner Kalan Paul, “We do them right the first time. We show up when we say we’re going to show up and we do what we say we’re going to do.” Kalan takes pride in the sterling reputation the company has earned with the Better Business Bureau and with Angie’s List. But most of all, he is proud of comments like this from his customers: “Excellent experience having LCI replace our driveway. They worked tirelessly all day to complete ahead of

spring rains. Our driveway looks superb and we could not be happier. And they are very competitive in pricing. “ Kalan has worked in the construction industry for more than 22 years, starting while a sales manager in the corporate world. He has built custom homes, rehabbed homes and owned rental property. Honesty and integrity is the cornerstone of his business. He shows up on time for appointments. He quotes the same prices for the same job, whether a modest or affluent neighborhood. His crew, with a combined 30 years’ experience, is also on time. And they are respectful of the property and owner. They typically remove the old drive, set the new one—always with rebar—and clean up, leaving an attractive first impression in just one day. For a decorative touch, they can add a scored border along the edges or a scored diamond pattern. All their driveways require no ongoing maintenance.

“It really bothers me,” he says, “when customers tell me stories about two men and a truck that come to town, set up an office in a hotel room and call people with too-good-to-be-true prices. They collect a deposit and then the customer has to hunt for them to get the work started.” Kalan is deeply rooted in the community, where he and his wife are raising their four adopted children. He is happy when people stop him on the street or in a coffee shop and ask, “Aren’t you the guy who did the driveway at…?” The LCI website includes a list of addresses where they have replaced driveways. Anyone interested can drive by and take a look before calling. The website also includes many customer accolades, such as: “Fantastic workmanship all around. The crew showed up as scheduled, was polite

22015 Great Race to Travel Route 66 Claremore will host a stop for one of the country’s most amazing automobile spectacles. By Lisa Rogers Claremore will host a lunch stop on the 2015 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Sunday, June 21, race organizers have announced. The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to the Claremore Expo Center for the $150,000 event. The race will start June 20 in Kirkwood, Mo., and finish June 28 at the Santa Monica Pier in California traveling along historic Route 66. Along the 2,400-mile route, competitors will travel parts of The Mother Road in all eight states it originally ran through – Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The Great Race, which began 32 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start – and hopefully finish – one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The

biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. The cars will arrive in Claremore starting at 12:30 p.m. at one-minute intervals for two hours. Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a first-hand look. Visit Claremore is hosting a variety of family friendly events to help celebrate Father’s Day starting at 11am until 4pm. Cars built in 1972 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2014 Great Race from Maine to Florida, a 1915 Hudson racer, a 1916 Hudson Hillclimber and a 1917 Peerless were the three oldest vehicles. All of those vehicles are participating again in 2015. Last year’s winners, Barry and Irene Jason of Keller, Texas, drove a 1966 Mustang and won $50,000. It was the first time a post-war automobile won the Great Race. The 2015 winners will again receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse. “When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant

festival,” race director Jeff Stumb said. “Last year we had three overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during the event.” Lunch stops, in order, are Rolla, Mo.; Claremore, Okla.; Elk City, Okla.; Tucumcari, N.M.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Winslow, Ariz.; Kingman, Ariz.; and Twentynine Palms, Calif. The event was started in 1983 by Tom McRae and it takes its name from the 1965 movie, The Great Race, which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk. The movie is a comedy based on the real life 1908 automobile race from New York to Paris. In 2004, Tony Curtis was the guest of the Great Race and rode in his car from the movie, the Leslie Special. How to create an Individual Investment Plan

“Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. By Joe Langley, CFP®, Client Development Officer, RCB Bank Trust Creating an investment plan will help you reach your financial goals. Without one, you could be leaving your future and retirement to chance. You may want to speak with an investment professional who can walk you through your goals and help determine how much money and time is needed to get there. Look for a qualified professional who will help you make sound investment decisions and keep you informed about the economy and financial markets that may affect your investment portfolio. Step 1: Set specific goal(s). Without a clear understanding of what you want, you’ll never know how to get there or how much it costs. Write down your goal(s) and make them very specific. Do you want to: • Buy a vacation home • Take a cruise • Retire early and comfortably • Give money to charities • Pay for college

Step 2: Calculate the cost. How much money do you need to reach your goal? An investment professional can help you calculate costs and determine if your goals are realistic and attainable? Step 3: Determine your timeframe. How much time do you have to achieve your goal? One year, five years, more than 10? In the investment world, timeframes are broken into terms: • Short-term - 0 to 5 years to complete • Medium-term – 5 to 10 years to complete • Long-term - Longer than 10 years to complete Step 4: Determine your risk tolerance. There is a direct correlation between the investments you choose and the length of time you have to meet your goal. Generally, you may choose higher risk investments like stocks or growth assets if you have a longer time to reach your goal. Higher risk investments offer the possibility of bigger gains

RCB Bank Trust Officers Terry Parsons, CFP®, Joe Langley, CFP®, and Travis Colson. but are considered more volatile. For short-term goals, you may pick less risky investments like bonds or income-producing assets that offer a lower but more predictable return on your money. Your risk tolerance should be based on your comfort level. Step 5: Choose how much money to invest. How much money can you comfortably invest toward your goal? Can you invest all of the funds needed at once? Do you need to invest over a period of years to reach your goals? Choosing to invest over a period of years requires discipline and consistency with your contributions. Step 6: Select investments.

This is where an investment professional or financial advisor can help as this step can be overwhelming. Step 7: Monitor progress. Periodically check the progress of your investments. Are you on track? Have you had a change in your situation? There are a number of factors that may require an adjustment to your investment plan. Revisiting your plan regularly will help you reach your goal. While there is a plethora of online tools available to help with the planning, purchasing and monitoring of your investment plan, it is always worth the time to sit down with a professional. No matter your goals or income level,

they can help you get the best bang for your buck. Opinions expressed above are the personal opinions of RCB Bank Trust officer Joe Langley, CFP®, VP Client Development, and meant for generic illustration purposes only.

GGoodwill = Jobs Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrates 2014 accomplishments with Annual Awards Presentation Luncheon.

By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other employment barriers and envisions a community where all people have the training and opportunities they need to be successful in the workplace, regardless of the barriers to employment they must overcome. “In 2014,” says Goodwill President David Oliver, “our Community invested nearly $21 million in Goodwill, and Goodwill invested nearly $21

million back into the Community. The total economic impact of all Goodwill programs and operations was $93.9 million.” On May 5, Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrated 2014 accomplishments at their Awards Luncheon Program at the Southern Hills Marriott Hotel with nearly 700 in attendance. The event was emceed by Kristen Dickerson, Evening News Anchor, KTUL. Employee of the Year honors went to Robert Mayfield. Due to circumstances beyond his

control, Robert found it difficult to get a good, stable job as he got older. This was frustrating and devastating for someone who longs to be busy. Robert was referred to Goodwill’s Contracts Division. During his nearly twenty years with Goodwill, Robert has mastered a wide variety of packaging and assembly jobs. His full-time employment has provided the stability, pride and self-sufficiency he sought. In addition to earning his way, Robert has developed a strong circle of friends that he

www.ValueNews.com never before had. Kevin Anderson was the recipient of the Graduate of the Year Award. Throughout his early years, Kevin struggled with shyness. Nearing high school graduation, he still didn’t have the confidence needed to obtain a steady job. Kevin was directed to Goodwill’s training programs for students with special needs by his family. In 2012 he was enrolled in the Transition Services program. Kevin began coming out of his shell and became an attentive student and natural leader for other students. When attending community job shadow events, Kevin was inquisitive, curious, asked good questions and showed appreciation for the opportunity to explore the real-life working world. In 2013 he transitioned to Goodwill’s Supported Employment program and wrote his resume to apply for his first retail job. Target hired Kevin as a cart attendant in 2013 and within one year he was working independently, passed his driving test and purchased a car so he could drive himself to work. Kevin has also received the Goodwill Work Adjustment Success Award and the Governor’s Disability Employment Award of Excellence. Mary Park received the Achiever of the Year award. Like most working moms, Mary’s stable job of 19 years helped provide for her family. Then suddenly she was told that her employer did not need her anymore. “Everything I was and everything I could be vanished into thin air,” said Mary. With

her confidence shattered, she thought it would be impossible to find anyone who would give her a chance at employment and that learning new skills would be too difficult. After being guided to the Career Readiness and Employment Essential classes by TulsaWORKS, Mary learned computer basics, customer service and job preparation skills which gave her the confidence to search for a new job. Mary is now a full-time Billing Specialist with Pediatric Specialists of Tulsa and appreciates the help given her by Goodwill and TulsaWORKS. Town & Country School was cited as the 2014 Community Partner. Town & Country is Oklahoma’s only accredited, nonpublic school specifically designed to meet the needs of students who have been diagnosed with learning differences and attention disorders (ADHD). Representing the School, Principal Shevaun Etier received the award. Thanks again, Tulsa, for your faithful support in helping individuals overcome considerable challenges to meet their goals! GGolf for Youth

The 12th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament benefitting the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services will be Friday, June 19.

By Lorrie Ward In June, two organizations will once again join forces to tee off on the golf course and raise awareness for important programs that have a great impact on our community. The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services are proud to present the 12th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament on Friday, June 19 at Claremore’s Heritage Hills Golf Course. The tournament features a four-person scramble and BurnCo BBQ Individuals and businesses can get involved by playing in the tournament (by entering a fourperson team for $300 or as an individual for $75), or by donating to a sponsorship. The cost of individual and team entries includes breakfast and lunch. Many sponsorship opportunities are available including: Hole Sponsor, Breakfast Sponsor, Corporate Sponsor and Radio Sponsor. The radio sponsorship includes airtime in which you speak with radio hosts and promote your business. Funds are used to further the missions and goals of both sponsoring organizations, each of which are dedicated to benefit-

ing the youth of Rogers County. “This tournament helps RCYS bridge the gap that is not provided for through state and area grants,” says Steve Blahut, Rogers County Youth Services director and coevent coordinator. “This tournament is wonderful because you are supporting two youth specific groups in one tournament,” adds Bret McGuire of the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation, an event coordinator for Steaks & Sticks. Steve, Bret and other group coordinators, including Sean Cox of Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and RCYS Board Member; Delayna Trease, volunteer; Greg Partney, volunteer; and Dave Bethea and Carolyn Swopes of RCYS, are all excited about continuing this event into the next decade, as they feel a golf tournament fits in with the both organizations’ philosophies of encouraging outdoor activity amongst youngsters. “The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation’s mission is to purchase and provide any equipment that helps with athletic conditioning and injury prevention training, and

Great golf, BurnCo BBQ and prize drawings are all part of the fun at this years Steaks & Sticks annual golf tournament. we also help by offering educational programs for coaches and staff,” says Sean Cox. “This golf tournament is a great vehicle for the community and Rogers County to support two totally youth oriented programs and have fun at the same time.” Cox also notes that Steaks & Sticks is one of the most attended golf tournaments at Heritage Hills, normally hosting more than one hundred individuals. “The tournament grows each year, and we look forward to seeing the same people that participate each year, as well as the excitement of seeing new participants getting involved,” says Carolyn Swopes. Delayna Trease agrees, adding, “The community is so receptive to this fun golf tournament. The tradition of the Steaks & Sticks

Golf Tournament is something I am fortunate to be a part of.” All teams begin play at the shot gun start event at 8:30 a.m. Golfers will gather during lunch to watch a live broadcast of “The Sports Animal” with Al Jerkins and Pat Jones, who are, as Bret McGuire says, “always entertaining” and Dave Bethea calls, “one of the most listened to sports talk shows in the state of Oklahoma.” Golfers will also have the chance to win prizes in a drawing based on the amount of mulligans purchased. Past prizes have included lawnmowers, weed eaters, golf bags and clubs, and even a round of golf for four at Patricia Island. “We are so grateful to the community and this region for their support of Rogers County,”

says Steve Blahut of RCYS, which is a private, non-profit United Way agency and part of a network of 43 youth services and agencies across the state of Oklahoma since 1976. “The support received for this event is an example of the heart people have toward our youth.”

Top Quality Paints and Products Is the Spectrum Mission Spectrum Paint builds on three decades of experience, with 52 locations in seven states.

By Carol Beck-Round With the advice and financial backing from his father, Travis Detter started Spectrum Paint in 1986 with one mission in mind: to bring the customer top quality products at competitive prices using the best possible service. Before opening his first store, Travis started his business out of a mini-storage building. He targeted industrial accounts. Since then, the independent paint dealer has grown from one employee to 175. His father, John, joined the company physically in 1995. When Travis began his business almost 30 years ago, he only had six months of paint industry experience. All that has changed and since then, the company has experienced consistent growth. Most recently, the company has opened stores in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. “We are committed to be a leading supplier of architectural, commercial and industrial coatings,” says Gentry Stafford, market-

ing and communications director. In October 2013, Spectrum Paint opened a Claremore location. Travis, a CHS graduate and current resident along with part owner Roddy Russo, has grown the original Tulsa location into 52 locations in seven states to become the largest independent paint dealer in the United States. “We strive to offer the flexibility and response time of a small company, yet offer our customers a broader and more complete product offering than any ‘company’ owned store or home center,” Gentry adds. Spectrum carries Benjamin Moore Paints and PPG Pittsburgh Paints, two of the most respected paint manufacturers and leaders in technology. “We also distribute stains, lacquers, and high performance and specialty coatings to provide a complete offering of paint and related products,” says Gentry. Each Spectrum location also

has delivery vehicles to make sure customers receive their product on time and in satisfactory condition. Spectrum has field representatives throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina and South Carolina whose job it is to make product recommendations, provide technical assistance and solve problems on site when necessary. Commercial and industrial customers aren’t the only ones who like Spectrum Paint. Gentry adds, “One of the biggest questions we get is, ‘Do you sell to regular homeowners or do-ityourselfers?’” The answer is yes. “Because we do a lot of business with commercial, industrial and residential contractors, some people think they can’t just come in and buy paint. We have a great range of products for DIY customers and even have a special menu of products where we have price-shopped and

Spectrum Paint has experienced consistent growth during its three decades. (L to R): Travis Detter, president and part owner of Spectrum Paint; Gentry Stafford, marketing and communications director; and John Detter, vice-president and part owner. (Not pictured: Roddy Russo, vice-president and part owner.) guaranteed comparable sundry products to be the same or lower price than the big box stores. We also share a lot of great stuff on our Facebook and Pinterest page for folks looking for color inspiration.” Located at 1301 W. Country Club Rd. in Claremore, Spectrum Paint is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.

Fathers are Special on June 21 and Oklahoma Aquarium says ‘Thank you’ Dads enter free with each paid admission.

By Jim Butcher The Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks is giving children a great opportunity to say thank you to their dads or even granddads on Father’s Day. All Dads can get in free, according to Teri Bowers, chief operating officer of the Oklahoma Aquarium, on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21. “The Aquarium is giving all Dads an opportunity to get in free of charge when accompanied by a paid admission. Teri, a former television host and personality, has been with the Oklahoma Aquarium nine years. She sees Father’s Day as a great opportunity for children and their parents to visit a “living museum which changes all the time.” With nearly 100 interactive exhibits, the Oklahoma Aquarium is an educational treat for children and adults of all ages. In addition to the self-guided exhibits, onsite aquarium staff is eager to explain and demonstrate facts about our aquatic neighbors. Ahoy mateys... Skin Care Options For All Ages continued from page 1

Some of their most popular choices eliminate fine lines and tighten skin without down time. Clients can have a procedure during lunch hour and go right back to work. Both ladies treat all types of skin conditions that include brown spots, rosacea, freckles, acne and stretch marks. Among their treatments are volumizing fillers, lip definitions, frown line reductions and cellulite reduction with the new Venus Freeze, using the latest heat technology to tighten skin and reduce cellulite, wrinkles and circumference. Emphasis is not only on making skin look and feel good, but on stimulating production of skin cells that give life to new and healthy skin.

For anyone who has dreamed of having a facelift but does not want to pay the hefty price, Face2Facial has a new PDO thread lift. This nonsurgical procedure produces faceliftlike results that last up to two years. And better yet, the cost is a fraction of traditional facelifts and there is virtually no downtime. There is no charge for consultations, unless Dr. Armstrong writes an acne prescription, and each client receives a special camera reveal. This advanced skin analysis magnifies underlying lesions and takes pictures of what the human eye cannot see. Clients will know what is ahead and can become proactive with their skin care.

Face2Facial includes treatments for other area besides the face. Laser hair removal, laser vein removal, waxing, spray tans, eyelash extensions, brow and lash tinting and hair thickening are among them. Dr. Armstrong also offers Smartlipo laser body sculpting. This minimally invasive procedure removes unwanted fat and tightens skin without leaving behind pockets that result from traditional liposuction. The spa’s newest offering is permanent non-laser tattoo removal. “With standard laser tattoo removal, the ink is absorbed into the lymph nodes,” explains Dr. Armstrong. “Our new method, with a tattoo removal gun, removes the ink without

entering the body in only three to six treatments.” The cost is less than laser removal, he says, and much safer. A helpful staff is ready to discuss skin concerns and their options, according to each person’s budget. Gift certificates are also available.

The Price of Depression… Strength of Mind was the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain compelling neurons to start firing which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while elevating moods and encouraging ambition. Insurance companies that currently cover TMS treatment at Strength of Mind include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Federal, Anthem, BCBS-OK, Medicare, United Behavioral Health, Community Care Oklahoma and Value Options. “The price of depression is staggering,” says Dr. McIlroy. “It affects your family, friends, employer,

employees and, of course, you. Depression leads to decreased mood, initiative and drive. It brings about indecisiveness about life while healthy development, jobs, hobbies and relationships come to a halt. The result is dissatisfaction with life in general, decreased physical activity, leading to poor internal health and stamina. Thus fat content goes up, efficiency of heart beats go down. The risk of strokes and diabetes rises.” With depression, the clock is ticking. “Research shows that parts of the brain, such as where memories are stored, actually shrink.” says Dr. McIlroy. “The likelihood of recovery continues to decrease the longer a depressed individual waits to see a specialist.” In other words, the longer you remain depressed, the harder it is to come out of it. continued from page 1 good news is that there is help through TMS. Dr. McIlroy explained that Strength of Mind has much to offer through a three-pronged approach to treating depression with TMS. “(1) We wake up the brain with direct stimulation in areas that pills have not been able to touch. (2) We use therapeutic fitness to engage the body while the brain is in a state of readiness. (3) We change patient behavior. This is what makes our treatment so unique; we treat the whole person.” Research has shown Dr. McIlroy’s group that while physical activity is a powerful tool in treating depression, exercise is the last thing a depressed person wants to do. “This typically leads to listlessness, inactivity and remaining out of shape,” said Dr. McIlroy. “Strength of Mind’s

solution is one-on-one therapeutic fitness to get the body moving, the result of which is a boost to the recovery process. And there have been no medical side effects with our TMS treatment,” added Dr. McIlroy. The Strength of Mind team forms a partnership with each patient in the journey to regaining quality of life. Their goal is to restore health and help each patient rediscover a life free from depression. For more information, contact

audiences of all sizes throughout the United States. More than ten years ago, the Bixby native started his music career on a lonely stage at the Tulsa State Fair. Although it was just him and his guitar, Corey’s talent and professionalism shone through and impressed the manager of a Western Swing band called Oklahoma Stomp. White’s first appearance quickly turned into a five-year gig touring with this group that opened for well-known acts like the Oak Ridge Boys and played famous stages like the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. White has already experienced extraordinary success, having shared the stage with country music icon Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Luke Bryan, Shooter Jennings, and Big and Rich. And now you can see the 19-year-old singer/songwriter in person in a free performance at the Glenpool Black Gold Days festival. Black Gold Days is sponsored by the Glenpool Chamber of Commerce. It is the largest event of the year for Glenpool, Oklahoma. Woolaroc Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Kidsfest! For a lot of people, summer in Oklahoma officially begins with KIDSFEST at Woolaroc!

By Bob Fraser, CEO Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve This year’s weekend festival is extra special as Woolaroc celebrates the 25th anniversary of this wonderful event. The dates are June 27th and 28th and it promises to be the best ever according to Woolaroc staff. The main campus of Woolaroc will be covered with children’s games, arts & crafts, huge inflatables, pony rides, train rides, jugglers, magicians, good food, face painting, treasure digs and more! It is old-fashioned fun the way the summer should be…..and there is something fun for kids of all ages (including Grandma and Grandpa!). Woolaroc’s founder, oil man Frank Phillips, had a soft spot in his heart for children. Each year in Bartlesville, he brought the circus to town and he hosted Christmas parties for the kids each year. “Without a doubt, Kidsfest at Woolaroc would meet with his approval, as there was nothing he enjoyed more than throwing a party, showing off his beloved Woolaroc and hearing the laughter of children,” said Woolaroc CEO Bob Fraser. Paula Blackwell, Events Coordinator for Woolaroc, said,

“Parents who came to Kidsfest years ago as children are now bringing their kids so the tradition continues. We are blessed at

New and exciting events are planned including the Acoustic Music Gathering on “Grove Stage 5” on the south stage of the Civic Center during the American Heritage Music Festival.
