Consistency and Success Martial Arts Academy emphasizes consistency for achieving success, including pursuing a black belt. By Lorrie Ward Chris Velez of Martial Arts Academy is a big believer in consistency: “Consistency is what will get you the black belt,” he says. Velez also believes in living by example – and that is why it is no surprise that his consistency in pursuing the goals he set when establishing Martial Arts Academy in Owasso nine years ago have paid off in visible and tangible results. “One of our objectives was to create more than just a good fighter,” says Velez, who explains that concentrating only on defense sells the whole process very short. “We wanted to deliver the promises we made to the student, both with the black belt and the attributes it takes to achieve the black belt.” In order to achieve this, Velez and staff continued to observe both the successes and
failures of other martial arts schools in order to educate themselves. From the time they held their first class in Owasso Fitness Zone on October 3, 2003 through 2005, they traveled and evaluated both the business and instruction side of other academies in order to know what practices they could best incorporate and what traditions should be left in the past. They were then ready to proceed toward their own visions when they moved into their permanent Owasso location in 2005. “Everything we do comes from a position of experience,” says Velez, “but not tradition for tradition’s sake.” One thing Velez and his staff took special notice of was the percentages of those who weren’t making it to black belt, and they looked for ways to lower this percentage. In a time of HMOs and insurance company red tape, it is often difficult to remember the “good old days” when the family physician took time to understand your needs and was more concerned with the medicine than money. Dr. Paul Pisarik of Owasso Family Medicine, however, has no trouble remembering this vision of medicine he had when first becoming a doctor almost three decades ago. “We have a crisis in health care right now, and I’m cutting through the red tape,” says Dr. Pisarik, whose goal is to omit the middleman and cut health costs overall. “I would like to (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Count Your Blessings BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
With both Thanksgiving and the presidential election this month, I was challenged with whether to write about gratefulness or the election. Then it occurred to me maybe I should write about being grateful that this election cycle is almost over. I know you will be as relieved as I am not to be bombarded with all the negativity and devisiveness, if nothing else! All kidding aside, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It doesn’t require scrambling around trying to get gifts or messing with lots of decorations. Its sole focus is gathering with friends and family just to eat and be together. It really creates a space that allows us to truly be grateful. We have a tradition in our family where every family member tells specifically all the things they have been grateful for over the last year as we go around the table. Since we don’t live close, it allows me to hear and understand what has been going on in their lives over the past year.
It occurs to me that with most everyone I deal with, we get caught up in the struggles and challenges of everyday life. And while we give thanks in our prayers each day, we should really spend more time focusing and concentrating on all of our blessings. The small, daily blessings that make our lives so much easier, the daily free and priceless gifts that our relationships bring are really what makes life worth living. After all, the more you focus your attention on the good, the more positive you attract. The tendency to focus on negativity in the markets,
disappointment with how you have managed your money, the lack of disciplined savings, what you wish your investments had done, and many other “if onlys”…abound. If you haven’t been satisfied with your current situation with your investments or your money, then stop focusing on what could have been and start doing something about it. If not, next year you will be sitting here thinking and feeling the same way. My dad used to tell me….If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you always got. It’s true. So, count your blessings each and every day. Make decisions to change things that aren’t working for you. Now, take the next step…. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. RSU Honors Faculty Excellence In October, eight Rogers State University faculty members were awarded for their contributions in teaching, scholarship/research and service.
By David Hamby Eight Rogers State University faculty members were honored for excellence in teaching, scholarship/research and service during a campus ceremony on Tuesday, October 9. Dr. Mary Mackie, associate professor of English and humanities, was named the recipient of the Pixley Excellence in Education Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon an RSU faculty member. The Pixley award is made possible by the Pixley Endowment for Excellence in Education at RSU. Mackie has taught more than a dozen courses in the decade she has been with RSU, where she has maintained an active research agenda with numerous publications including book chapters, articles and conference presentations/papers. She is the advisor for the campus newspaper, serves as poetry editor for “Cooweescoowee” and has chaired the Humanities Forum for seven years. In addition to the Pixley Award, Mackie also received the Gladys L. and Carl G. Herrington Excellence in Service Award for the School of Liberal Arts during Tuesday’s ceremony.
Dr. Sally Emmons, professor of English and humanities, received the Herrington Excellence in Teaching Award for the School of Liberal Arts. In addition to her teaching in the School of Liberal Arts, she teaches service classes for other RSU departments and schools, and also serves as managing editor of “Cooweescoowee.” In the School of Business and Technology, Dr. Dana Gray received the Pfizer Excellence in Teaching Award, Dr. Peter Macpherson received the Pfizer Excellence in Scholarship/Research Award and Dr. MaryRose Hart received the Pfizer Excellence in Service Award. Gray is an assistant professor of business, who brings extensive business experience to the classroom. The 2008 Pixley Award winner, she integrates real-world learning opportunities for students to bridge theory to practice, allowing students to build a portfolio documenting professional experiences before they graduate. Macpherson is professor and John W. Norman Chair in Business Information
Technology. He recently had three papers accepted for publication dealing with heart modeling and heart/brain interactions, one of which was accepted into the Eighth International Conference on Advances in Fluid Mechanics in Algarve, Portugal in September 2010 and published in the proceedings. In 2011, he had a paper presented at the Modeling in Medicine and Biology Conference in Riga, Latvia. Hart, who serves as associate professor of business, has served on the Faculty Senate and as a member of numerous university committees including curriculum, academic policies and procedures, strategic planning, and United Way. She was the founding faculty member and faculty advisor for the RSU Sigma Beta Delta International Business Honor Society. In the School of Mathematics, Science and Health Sciences, Dr. Jalalidin Jaenbai earned the Pfizer Excellence in Teaching Award, Dr. Jae-Ho Kim received the Pfizer Award in Scholarship/Research and Dr. Kasia Roberts was recog-

Jaenbai, assistant professor of mathematics, has extensively integrated technology into his Linear Algebra, Math Structures II and Calculus II (blended) courses, where he incorporated a collaborative research-platform learning environment where small student groups would conduct related research projects. Kim, professor of biology, was awarded an Organized Faculty Research Grant for a project entitled “Analysis of Green Tea Extracts and the Effects of the Extracts on a Murine Cancer Cell Line Proliferation.” He has mentored students in preparing research presentations across the state, including Research Day at the Capital. He continues to collaborate with the University
of Oklahoma, using their cell culture facilities to facilitate his research, as well as that of his students. Roberts, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, is active in the state and national professional organizations advancing chemistry instruction. She is extensively involved in RSU committees, is sponsor of the RSU Chemistry Club, and she has conducted outreach activities with middle school students at KIPP Tulsa College Preparatory. VVet Tech of the Year Family Animal Medicine recently honored Wanda Cline as Veterinary Technician of the Year for her extraordinary service to Owasso pets. By Shelly Robinson Veterinary Technician Wanda Cline is much more comfortable cradling a dog or cat in her arms than holding an award, but that love of animals is precisely what inspired the doctors at Family Animal Medicine to recognize her dedication to the profession. Wanda was recently honored by the staff of Owasso’s Family Animal Medicine as Veterinary Technician of the Year, and Dr. Gena Guerriero says there is no one more deserving of the award for extraordinary service. “Wanda lives and breathes to care for animals; she even comes in on her days off to see how her patients are doing. She is wonderful with our clients and is definitely the matriarch of our clinic.” This praise comes as no surprise for anyone who has seen the spunky 74-year-old in action. FAM receptionist Mariann Stanley has worked with Wanda over a 22-year period and says she treats everyone like her own. “She invited me over to a homecooked meal and didn’t mind
when I cut my piece of cornbread from the middle of the pan,” she laughs. “That was 30 years ago and we’ve been
friends ever since.” Wanda confirms the family atmosphere at Family Animal Medicine. She fondly refers to
Veterinary Technician Wanda Cline of Family Animal Medicine.
Dr. Gena and partner Dr. Jenny Nobles as “her girls” and has a genuine pride as she describes the practice the two have established. “They practice such good medicine, they work on sick patients together as a team, and will dig and research to find the best treatment to help each individual pet.” If you have a pet in Owasso, chances are you’ve met Wanda at some point – she has been caring for Owasso animals for over 20 years. She is now proud to call the office of Family Animal Medicine home. “I really like the personal attention here and I just couldn’t ask for nicer people to work with,” says Wanda. “Kim Bishop is the newest member of our team, but I’ve worked with the doctors, Mariann, and vet techs Katie Knoten and Aaron Goldesberry for years. Karen Drosos and her daughters Amanda and Kristen are also here. I know that I’m with people who really care about the patients. It really is family.” Having two dogs herself, Wanda understands how owners feel their animals are a true part of their family. She has a pit bull named Mijita, which means ‘my little girl,’ and a bloodhound named Ophelia. From a personal perspective, Wanda said her dogs are in her heart and soul. When she lost her husband, Thomas, several years ago, she says she couldn’t have gone on without her animals. “My son, Herb, lives in Bartlesville and my
Page 7
grandson, Thomas, is in the Air Force and stationed in Arkansas. My animals keep me company and I couldn’t live without them.” Wanda says the hardest part of her job is when a patient is euthanized. “I know we are always professional,” she said, “but we still cry right along with the owners. You just have to know that you help so many more feel better and live healthier that it makes up for some of the heartbreak.” Her favorite part of the job is performing dental care, but she also stays busy assisting in surgeries, running labs and helping with exams. She also enjoys seeing the all the pampered pooches with fresh haircuts, prancing puppies and happy owners when Micki DeYong finishes a grooming session. “It’s just a fun place to be every day and I don’t have any plans to retire anytime soon.” Mariann spoke the sentiment shared by this close-knit group: “Every day with Wanda is a new adventure, and I wouldn’t want to miss any of them.” Family Animal Medicine is located across the street from IHOP at 9200 N. management and tree services. With this dedication to excellence, it is no wonder that Lawns By Nature maintains an A+ score from the Better Business Bureau and customers quickly become repeat customers and friends. “We work hard to build a trust with our clients. Communication with them is our top priority,” says Andrew. “We don’t lose accounts. We make sure that once you’ve worked with us, you are 100 percent satisfied and want to continue using our services.” With winter blowing in Oklahoma-style snow and ice, protecting your home and yard from falling limbs is a must. Lawns By Nature not only offers tree trimming, pruning and removal, but they also tout advantages over other tree companies. “Because we’re a full landscape company that offers tree services, we are able to offer landscape maintenance with our proposal regarding tree work.” They also provide snow removal services. Lawns By Nature’s landscaping services include design, installation,
maintenance, soil cultivation, mulching, and the addition of seasonal flowers, flower pots and arrangements. They also offer commercial mowing services, leaf removal and debris hauling. Furthermore, they build retaining walls, boulderscapes, hardscapes, concrete sidewalks, porches and driveways, French drains, and perform sprinkler repair. Tom Phillips is able to ride his Harley and enjoy life again after a knee replacement from Dr. LaButti.
By Joshua Danker-Dake Tom Phillips, 55, of Hominy worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections for over 22 years. “I weigh over 300 pounds, and when I retired, I had over 22 years on my feet. My knee was worn out because I was heavy and because I was standing and walking on concrete for so long,” he says. “I had very little cartilage left in my right knee, and I was in pain every time I tried to walk.” Tom paid several visits to an orthopedist. His visits there included X-rays and an MRI, and he had two injections in his right knee, he says. “The first injection reduced the pain for about two months, but the second shot did not help at all.” Tom then visited Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I told him I was ready for surgery,” Mike said. “I had the surgery on August 11, 2011, and after two days in the hospital, I was sent home. Dr. LaButti’s office arranged for home health to visit and determine my needs. A nurse visited and helped me set up my physical therapy, and the physical therapist visited my home three days a week for about five weeks.”
The surgery and the rehabilitation program were successful, Tom says. “My wound healed very quickly, and within a couple of weeks, the strength in my right leg began to return. I’ve had no problems since the surgery; I recently had my one-year check-up with Dr. LaButti, and everything is looking good.” Now rid of debilitating knee pain, Tom is free to pursue his interests in his retirement. “I recently purchased a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and I plan on seeing some new places in the next few years,” he says. “And I would highly recommend Dr. LaButti to anyone with a knee problem.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. Natural Herbs from Nature’s Sunshine provides protection from colds and flu without the dangers of immunization. The whole idea behind vaccines is to help the body build its own immune defense shield against a specific virus. Trouble is, the vaccines can have dangerous side effects and they are only effective against a limited number of diseases or strains of disease. Doesn’t it make a lot more sense to build the entire immune system the safe, natural way? That is what the “Natural Flu Shot” is all about!

For each person who attends Go Further with Ford Night on November 15, Jack Kissee Ford will donate $20 – up to $1,000 – to Rogers County Youth Services. “We selected Rogers County Youth Services because we wanted to support an important local organization that is in need of assistance. The goal of RCYS is to promote strong, healthy and successful individuals and families through support and tools such as counseling services, emergency shelter care, youth court, family enrichment classes and much more. While at the dealership, consumers will have a unique opportunity to compete to win an exclusive VIP experience with “American Idol,” including two tickets to a live taping of the show, airline, hotel, spa treatments, and $400 in spending money. Experience, Knowledge and Integrity Candi Czapansky seeks re-election to the Rogers County Court Clerk’s office.
By Carol Beck-Round For almost three decades, Candi Czapansky has been one of the smiling faces at the Rogers County Court Clerk’s office. Since Czapansky first walked through the courthouse doors in 1980, she has become familiar with all aspects of the office through her work in the various departments. In 1996, Rogers County voters revealed their confidence in Czapansky to run this important county government office by electing her Court Clerk. Since then, their trust in Czapansky’s integrity and ability to run the office efficiently led to her re-election in 2000, 2004 and 2008. During her tenure as Court Clerk, Czapansky has earned Oklahoma Court Clerk Certification from The Center for Local Government Technology through Oklahoma State University. She has also implemented numerous improvements, leading to a more efficient office. According to Czapansky, Rogers County was one of the first District Courts in the state to use computers. In 1996, Rogers County Courts joined
the Supreme Court of Oklahoma computer system, now known as Oklahoma Court Information System. “This is the present system in which the courts as well as the public can view court dockets, calendars, and more via the Internet at Oklahoma State Courts Network,” says Czapansky. In 2009, the Supreme Court adopted a plan to meet future technology needs of the courts throughout the State of Oklahoma. “As a result of my vast knowledge of the Court Clerk’s office, I was appointed by the Supreme Court in March 2009 to the Civil Subcommittee,” she says. In January 2011, Czapansky’s experience led to her appointment to the Standards Subcommittee. “While serving on these committees, I worked on Joint Application Development and Joint Application Design projects,” she adds. “In addition, I have also served the Supreme Court by participating as a member of various teams and study groups.” With the implementation of
the new statewide system, the public and the legal community will be able to file and monitor court cases from their own offices and homes. “I know they are looking forward to this new system because of the benefits,” Czapansky adds. During her tenure as Court Clerk, Czapansky implemented a full-time cost collection administrator as well as adding a bookkeeper position to help streamline the office’s workload. Under Czapansky’s leadership, the office also began accepting credit card payment for fees. “I have also made it possible for all public docket sheets to be available by Internet access,” Czapansky says. “These updates are designed to aid the public in accessing Rogers County court records.” Currently the office is in the process of converting microfilmed records into digital images for archive purposes, and Czapansky says it will help maintain “the integrity of our records.” Budget reductions over the last few years have forced Czapansky to make tough decisions concerning office
Candi Czapansky is running for her fifth term as the Rogers County Court Clerk. Czapansky has served in the position since she was first elected in 1996. operations. “While striving to maintain our high standard of service to Rogers County residents and the State of Oklahoma, I have taken on additional court duties as requested by Rogers County judges,” she says. “My staff, as well as myself, work hard each day to sustain a well-run office, without compromising the integrity of the court records, or the rights of the public which is dictated by the state statutes and Oklahoma Supreme Court.” Among Czapansky’s accomplishments is the savings to Rogers County residents of over 17 million dollars since March 1996, when she took office. “We have used Court Fund monies instead of utilizing county funds to operate the Court Clerk’s office,” she says.
Dedication to improving the Court Clerk’s office operations earned Czapansky an “Excellence in Management” award from the Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. A member of the Oklahoma Court Clerk’s Association as well as the County Officers and Deputies Association, Czapansky says she has enjoyed her 29 years as a public servant, working in the Court Clerk’s office. “I wish to continue serving the residents of Rogers County,” she adds. “We are here to serve the residents.” For more information, contact

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti
This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time.
• 29 years experience in the Court Clerk’s office
There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

AA Time for Family Check out The Hamlet for your family’s Thanksgiving turkeys, hams and other delicious delights. By Stephanie Reed Shannon Hester, owner of The Hamlet, knows all about the importance of family around the holidays. As a small business owner, she depends on the help of her family to maintain the quality and spirit of the deli. “I couldn’t do it without them. I depend on my family’s support,” Shannon says, and they have made support a standard practice. After Shannon’s father, Gordon Pendergraft, sold The Hamlet in 2003, Shannon was eager to bring the eatery back to the family. Under her ownership, The Hamlet has thrived and evolved. Boasting new gourmet dips, meal starters, and desserts, The Hamlet is no longer relegated to the award-winning honey-kissed hams and smoked meats. They are now offering made-to-order gift baskets that serve as perfect hostess and corporate gifts. Customers can choose from an assortment of Oklahoma-made products and delicacies, or they can ask the friendly staff for recommendations or themed ideas. Can’t pick the gift basket up? Not to worry. The Hamlet ships meats and gift baskets, and they also make deliveries in the

salads and sandwiches. If you can’t make it into the deli, lunch boxes are also available for individuals or corporate meetings. As Thanksgiving approaches, Shannon encourages customers to preorder turkeys and hams. Customers can either call to place an order, or they can order online. “You won’t get a better ham or turkey. We have gone through and inspected each one. They are delicious,” Shannon encourages. Whether you are serving a small family or a family of 36, The Hamlet has plenty of options to meet your needs. They offer hams ranging from 6 to 18 lbs, and turkeys that range from 10 to 14 lbs. With all of her clan’s support, Shannon hopes to pay it forward. “The holidays are all about spending time with family. Let us worry about the preparations. Our meats are so convenient and delicious.” They are precooked and require no preparation – just take it home and serve it. In the upcoming year, look for The Hamlet’s new facelift. Complete with outdoor seating and a fireplace, The Hamlet’s new look will bring the gourmet flavor into the décor as well as the food.

HHomes for the Holidays
Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 1 to join Junior Ocieleta on its 29th annual Christmas Home Tour.
By Cassie Woods The women of the Junior Ocieleta Club are gearing up to host the 29th annual Christmas Home Tour. The tour will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2012. This year’s tour will feature
the following five residential homes: Nate and Lisa Saylor, 14282 E. Glenwood Dr.; Chad and Misty Choat 25116 S. 4150 Rd.; Mike and Arlene Brown, 13825 E. 460 Rd.; Eric and Jamie Kennedy, 14851 E.

holidays according to the personalities of each individual family and are sure to inspire the Christmas spirit in tour attendees. “We had the home at 910 W. 6th St. on the tour last year while it was still under construction as a Habitat for Humanity home,” says Savannah Haddock, club president. “When Ashley volunteered to let us showcase it again, we thought it would be great to bring it back for our attendees to see the completed project. The home will be decorated with inexpensive design ideas that anyone can do, which we think our guests will also appreciate.” The Junior Ocieleta Club was started by philanthropist Ocie Mayberry on September 27, 1956, to give young women an opportunity to work together to support local charity needs. Ocie passed away in 1987, just four years after the first Home Tour. But her legacy lives on as 100 percent of the proceeds from the tour still go to help fund community projects and organizations in Claremore, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA, Claremore Public Schools Foundation, Safenet Services, Bit by Bit, the Manger and Friends of the Library. As an added treat on this 29th tour, Janelle Dover Hankinson, the granddaughter of Ocie Mayberry, will be visiting from Seattle to attend. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to attend this year’s tour,” said Janelle. “It’s a privilege to see the ladies and projects that are inspired by the hard work and

dedication of my grandmother.” Tickets are $10. To purchase tickets visit: Belvidere Mansion, Crafted: An Artisan Boutique, Floral Creations, Gripado's Deli, Hoovers Have All Mall, J&J Pharmacy, Lilack Salon, The Nut House, The Pink House and Uniquely Susie's, or contact a Junior Ocieleta member! “Large groups and bus tours are also welcome, though we do ask that you make advance reservations to save wait time at the homes,” said Haddock. Sponsors of the annual event to date include RCB Bank, Roe Creative, Grand Bank, Community Home Health, Neely Insurance & Financial Services, Crumpton Aviation, Rogers County Abstract, Melton Sales, Walmart and Sander’s Concrete Construction. “We are very appreciative of our generous sponsors. Their contributions pay for ticket printing, advertising and all other expenses associated with the event,” added Haddock. “Thanks to them, all of our proceeds from ticket sales are able to be funneled back into the community, rather than spent on the event itself.” For more information, search Junior Ocieleta Christmas Home Tour on Facebook.

Consistency and Success family’s schedule. Another change involved adult-to-child ratio in classes. These groups had typically been separated; however, Velez found that placing adults and children in classes together encouraged the adult students to provide much needed examples of maturity for the children. Beginning his own martial arts training at an early age, he still recalls the impact of his own instructors’ words, mannerisms, and ways of speaking – and these good examples have guided what has been put into the curriculum. Through the years, Velez had also observed that martial arts classes were
continued from page 1
often geared toward people who were obviously athletically gifted. He believes that even those who do not show athletic aptitude in the beginning are capable of success with hard work, encouragement and consistency, so he and his staff gear their teaching styles toward a deeper learning experience, one that extends beyond competition and into personal growth. Velez has seen tremendous results from the practices he and his staff have put into place. “People who didn’t think they were athletes in the beginning are often actually quite good, and our high ranking group is very technically sound,”
he says. “It is not uncommon for our academy to have two or three lines of black belts.” Through fulfilling these goals, Mr. Velez has been able to make reality another vision: providing opportunities for those who would like to instruct in the martial arts. In March of 2012, he opened a second Martial Arts Academy location, in Tulsa, with his longtime colleague Richard Gibson acting as chief instructor. “Expanding and opening up these opportunities has always been part of the plan,” Velez says. “We are happy to see this come to fruition.”
Want More than 15 Minutes with Your Doctor? provide excellent health care for people without medical insurance or those with a high deductible and who would like to spend more time with their physician than today’s current practices can offer.” Dr. Pisarik worked for many years within the current medical system and so understands its problems. Originally from Chicago, he obtained his medical degree from the University of Illinois, completed his residency in Rockford, and then lived and practiced in Phoenix for nine years before taking a research fellowship in Houston. Because
his wife is from Oklahoma, he took a teaching position at OU Medical School in Tulsa, where he stayed for four years. He now works within the Urgent Care system in addition to taking patients at his new office in Owasso. Dr. Pisarik hopes to build his new practice on old values and soon concentrate on family health care full time. “Patient care is my top priority,” he says. “I try to do an excellent job and be thorough, and I’ve found that often takes more than the typical 15 minutes allowed in most physicians’ offices today.”
Dr. Pisarik does not blame his colleagues for current costs and quick office visits; rather, he blames the system within which they have to operate. “It is very frustrating – the average doctor’s office spends over $82,000 a year dealing with insurance companies,” he says. “Offices often have to double- or triple-book patients to make enough money just to keep their clinic going.” After his time at OU Medical School, Dr. Pisarik decided to step out of the system so he could concentrate on truly practicing medicine. In bypassing the insurance system, he lowers overhead costs and can
charge about half the amount of many other physicians' offices. He books only two patients per hour. “This is not only better for the patient, but it is more fulfilling for me,” says Dr. Pisarik. “I don’t feel like I’m rushing patients through on an assembly line.” The old saying might be “time is money,” but for Dr. Pisarik, time equals quality. “Having time with my patients helps me get to know them better as human beings, and they feel they are being heard and not rushed,” he explains. “I like to make sure everything is being

Don’t Let Ugly Grout Embarrass You continued from page 1 arriving for the holidays.” Grout Care has a solution for eliminating the problem of ugly, moldy, cracked or dirty grout. “Ceramic tile doesn’t wear out,” he says, “but grout certainly does.” That’s the beauty of the Grout Care solution. All the old grout is removed and replaced with new. You have the option of making the grout the same color it originally was or elect to change to a lighter or darker color for an entirely new look. Grout Care of Tulsa provides four basic restoration options. They can clean the tile, remove and replace existing grout, stain the grout to any color of your choosing, and seal tile and grout areas to ensure carefree future maintenance. “Our color sealers will permanently seal your grout and make it cleanable,” said Kent. Kent offers the following advice about tile and grout. Mold likes to attack tiled areas, and as grout ages, it may become pitted. Mold finds the pits and begins to grow. You cannot wash it away, and continued scrubbing only seems to aggravate the problem. Grout Care of Tulsa’s solution is to remove the damaged grout and replace it. If you’ve ever tried bleaching the grout in a shower or other problem area, don’t do it again; it won’t solve the problem. And if you’re constantly fighting soap scum or stains and the grout has turned a different color, Kent believes Grout Care has a solution to revitalize the area. A customer satisfaction guarantee is included with each completed project. If you’re thinking about selling your home, or if you’re just getting tired of all that scrubbing, call Grout Care of Tulsa. The kitchen and bathroom are often the
difference between making and breaking a home sale, and it’s often because of tired, ugly grout. “We have a cure for moldy, missing, dirty or cracked grout,” says Kent, “and we’d love to help make your kitchen and bathroom more appealing.” “Our ultimate goal is to provide great customer service,” said Kent. “Our employees are clean and neat on the job and take pride in their work. We’re still doing just one thing. And we still do it right!” Call Kent at Grout Care of Tulsa before your guests arrive for the holidays. It only takes 15 minutes to get a quote and it’s free with no obligation.

Are You Tired of the Weight? Dr. Luis Gorospe, a highly experienced bariatric surgeon who provides personalized, friendly care to each of his patients, offers free weekly seminars on weight loss surgery.
By Sheryl Sowell If you are morbidly obese and suffering from medical complications stemming from being overweight, surgery may be the right answer for you. With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who to see, and what surgery is right for you. To help answer these questions and determine if you are a proper candidate for weight loss surgery, Dr. Luis Gorospe, based out of Wagoner Community Hospital, offers free weekly seminars designed to address all of your questions and concerns. During the seminars, Dr. Gorospe explains the entire process from beginning to end and assists the small group of attendees in determining if they are qualified for surgery. To some people, for example, he may suggest lifestyle changes prior to, or even in place of, opting for surgery. For those who are qualified to undergo the operation, Dr. Gorospe offers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding, and gastric sleeve surgeries. He also performs conversion and
revision surgeries in cases that the initial operation does not result in the desired weight loss. According to Johnna Sue Blair, business development director for Wagoner Community Hospital, it is a combination of Dr. Gorospe’s experience, skill, personality, and individual attention to each patient that makes him a superior choice when selecting a bariatric surgeon. “Not only is Dr. Gorospe a board certified bariatric surgeon who has performed many successful weight loss surgeries, he also has an extraordinary bedside manner, which you don’t always see with surgeons. His patients absolutely love him, he is very friendly, and the first thing people notice about him is that he’s always smiling. You can tell he truly cares about his patients.” Dr. Gorospe has been performing weight loss surgeries for many years at hospitals throughout the Tulsa metro area. He began offering bariatric operations at Wagoner Community Hospital in August of this year. “Dr. Gorospe
prefers working in smaller community hospitals such as Wagoner because he is able to give patients more personal, one-on-one care,” said Johnna. “At larger hospitals, patients are in and out and can get lost in the crowd, but here Dr. Gorospe is able to give each of his patients the individual attention they want and need.” Since 2003, morbid obesity has been officially determined a disease in and of itself; therefore surgical treatment would be considered for patients who meet the definition for morbid obesity. Generally, the criteria for surgery is considered a patient who is between 80 and 100 pounds overweight (BMI of 40 or higher) who have associated medical conditions that are related to their obesity. “Your genetics, internal hormonal imbalance, learned eating behavior and subliminal stimulation, especially through the media, are just some of the factors that must take the blame for morbid obesity,” said Dr. Gorospe. Among his many
Luis V. Gorospe, MD, FACS. accomplishments, Dr. Gorospe was the first to perform laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass in Oklahoma and was the first doctor from Oklahoma to be a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. If you’re ready to change your life, call Dr. Gorospe’s office at (918) 252-2800 to learn
about his free weekly seminars on weight loss surgery.
