Double the Surceé

Surceé Home Décor & Gifts is doubling in size, just in time for the Fall Open House September 6-8. By Shelly Robinson Ever wish you could have more of a good thing? Laura Sanders of Surceé Home Décor & Gifts has been wishing for more room in her Owasso store and this month, her wish is coming true. “The space to the south of us became available and provided the perfect opportunity for us to expand. We will be able to offer more of everything you love, with the same helpful Surceé girls who have been here from the start.” Surceé is known for its beautiful interior, with charming vignettes throughout the store to inspire the interior designer in you. Laura’s mother, Sue Hatfield, has an exceptional gift for decorating and like every year, the store will close for a few days prior to the Fall Open House so that she can work her

magic, totally transforming the store and incorporating all the latest merchandise for Halloween and fall. “It’s like an early Christmas for us each time the delivery trucks pull in – we start pulling things out of boxes and getting so excited,” laughed staff member Cathy Haney. The additional space will double the size of the store and the timing couldn’t be better, as the Fall Open House is just around the corner, September 68. This annual event kicks off on September 6 with a huge Grand Reopening party and Girls Night Out. The doors will open at 5 p.m. and the first 20 customers will receive a special gift bag full of Surceé goodies from throughout the store. Many of the Surceé vendors are contributing items for door prizes as well.

Laura says this year’s Fall Open House will be bigger and better than ever, with refreshments including delicious samples of fall foods that are perfect for tailgating and get-togethers. “We just wanted to throw a big party and say thank you to our loyal customers for shopping locally and making this expansion possible.” The Fall Open House continues Friday and Saturday during regular store hours with more prize giveaways, discounts and representatives from some of Surceé’s most popular brands on hand to speak with customers. Laura said the larger display area will allow her to offer more lighting, more home décor and two new lines of custom (continued on page 22)

When you see or hear the name, Waterstone Private Wealth Management, you might think it’s for the very wealthy. Co-owners Ken Grant and wife Melanie Hasty-Grant, want everyone to know that isn’t the case. Wealth is a relative term and the services offered at Waterstone are appropriate for anyone who wants to make the most of their investments. “Wealth isn’t something that just happens to you one day (unless you win the lottery). You have to have a plan and a strategy to get you there,” said Melanie. “We are the ones to help you do that.” Neither Ken nor Melanie (continued on page 22)

The economy continues to be a big topic of conversation right now for people of all walks of life – everyone is trying to figure out how to pinch a few extra pennies and earn some extra cash. A perfect solution for many families is buying and consigning at Just Between Friends, the nation’s leading children’s and maternity consignment event. Just when the economy seems to be getting better, something else pops up, and it finds a way to contribute to inflation and the shrinkage of everyone’s take-home pay. This is taking its toll on many families’ budgets, especially when it comes to purchasing for back to (continued on page 22)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Does Money Buy Happiness? Sometimes. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Look around! These days it’s not hard to find folks who “appear” to be living “in high cotton” who are really struggling to make their bills. What my dad used to call “Big Hat. No Cattle.” We call them Hundred Thousand Dollar Millionaires…..and they are a dime a dozen. You know exactly who I am talking about. These are your neighbors, and friends, and people you go to church with, who have become entangled by all the worldly things they “thought” would make them happy and all the debt to goes along with it. Many of them are one paycheck away from disaster. They have lots of things, lots of monthly payments, and nothing in savings or investments. This “I want everything…and I want it now” mentality abounds in all levels of society from our government spending down to our personal economies. One of the things I tell my clients is “You can have almost anything you want. You just can’t have everything.” Some people want everything now…and that’s where financial problems come in! In reality, a determined focus on what’s really important to you can get you almost anything, as long as you’re able to let go of extraneous things and activities in the process. Becoming financially mature starts with a shift in mindset. We have to begin thinking of money not as an end in itself, but as a tool that helps us get or do what we

almost feel the oxygen being sucked out of the room. It’s as if I have asked them to go on a 500 calorie a day diet. This is because folks associate these terms with feelings of self-denial, discipline, and conflict. What I am talking about here is more about embracing what you want out of life and letting other things fall away. Instead of engaging in a grueling battle to deny yourself, simply focus on what has long-term value for you. Saving money flows naturally from that. want. Don’t let the tail wag the dog! Becoming financially fit requires us to make values-based decisions on what is important to us, trim the fat, and stay focused. True wealth is an inner sense of abundance, not outward displays of bling-bling. If you value time with your family, then you should find time to be fully present and engaged with those you love. You should save and plan for a family vacation that will give you lasting memories. If you value being able to spend your golden years without fear of whether or not social security will be around, then save and plan those retirement years. If you value buying nice things then buy nice things and stop buying junk. Even if you are on a limited budget, save for what you truly want and value instead of throwing your money away …. just so you can have it now! When I talk with clients about things like money management, budgets, and saving, you can

Here are 3 simple steps: 1) Determine what you really value. 2) Set specific goals to accomplish. 3) Either earn more money for the things you value or spend less on the things you don’t. Remember, there are no armored trucks at a funeral procession. In other words INVEST in yourself, in your dreams, in your future, in a lifestyle that fulfills and enriches you and those you love, and you will not only be happier but you’ll be richer in so many ways. W Where Back-to-School Pickings are Ripe The Children’s Orchard offers new and gently used clothing at a fraction of the retail price.

By Joshua Danker-Dake If you’re looking to save a substantial amount of money on back-to-school clothes or have boxes of old, too-small clothes you want to get rid of, you may find a visit to Children’s Orchard (12307 E. 96th St. N.) well worth your time. Children’s Orchard was founded in 1980 as the nation’s first franchise of new and gentlyused name brand children’s items. They both buy and sell new and used children’s clothing, toys and accessories. Children’s Orchard of Owasso is one of Oklahoma’s largest resale children’s clothing stores. “We offer a huge selection of high-quality, gently-used clothing, at prices up to 80 percent off retail, including brands like Gymboree, Children’s Place, Baby Gap and Justice,” says owner Kari Hendrix. “We focus on saving our customers money, and right now we have great deals for back to school.” Parents can also bring in their used items and trade them for cash or store credit. While Children’s Orchard displays clothing seasonally, they buy all seasons of clothing all the time. “It’s a great way for you to earn money for old items that your

children can’t use anymore, without the hassle of organizing a garage sale,” says Hendrix. Hendrix bought the Owasso Children’s Orchard in March of 2011, and the store had a grand

out all the coats and jackets we’ve accumulated over the course of the year,” Hendrix says. “We have lots of brand name coats, many of which have never been worn, at a fraction of their original cost.” Children’s Orchard offers walk-in buying Monday through Saturday from 9:30 to 4. If you bring in two small bags of clothing or toys (or three or four large pieces of equipment), Children’s Orchard promises to buy while you shop, in 20 minutes or less. Children’s Orchard offers cash or store credit with a 40 percent bonus. Children’s Orchard is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, give Children’s Orchard a call or visit them on the web at www.childrensorchard.com.

Clothes Make the Woman

Dress for Success Tulsa will host its annual Fashion Show and Auction September 14, 2012 at Greenwood Cultural Center.

By Tara Waugh Who wouldn’t want an evening filled with fashion, food and fun which also supports an amazing organization that assists disadvantaged women in the Tulsa area? Dress for Success Tulsa is holding its annual “Step Up to Success” Fashion Show and Auction on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Greenwood Cultural Center, 322 N. Greenwood. The enchanting evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with a social hour where food and drinks can be enjoyed, and auction items can be gazed and bid upon. At 7:30 p.m., guests will be formally welcomed and will hear from a testimonial speaker attesting to the support and transformation that Dress for Success Tulsa gives to its clients. Next, the emcee of the evening, Fox 23 News Anchor Chera Kimiko, will begin the fashion show where models sport the latest fashions, accessories and cosmetics from Dillard’s in Woodland Hills Mall and have their hair styled from Ihloff Salon. The models are executive men and women from Tulsa-area businesses and include Katherine Anderson, Cancer Treatment Centers of America; Cheryl Chinowth, Chinowth & Cohen Realtors; Jim Boucher, TBT Consulting, LLC; Greg Johnson, Samson; Sean Kouplen, Regent

The women behind the success: Ronda Adkisson, executive director, and Pat Simmons, board president. Bank; David Pennington, Magellan Midstream Partners; Cassie Reese, Crossland Construction Company; and Ingrid Sadler, State Farm Insurance. After the first round of fashion will be a live auction hosted by Greg Simmons from Simmons Homes. Live and silent auction items include a variety of items

such as trips to favorite destinations and packages representing Tulsa-area spas, golf courses, sports and entertainment, hotels and restaurants, and much, much more. Following the live auction, the fashion show continues, focusing on cocktail and evening attire, which ends the night on an elegant note. Throughout the night, guests can enjoy a plethora

of cocktails and delicious dishes provided by Chef Mark Michalski and Tulsa-area restaurants. To support this extraordinary organization and contribute to one of its most important fundraisers of the year, patrons can get tax-deductible table sponsorships available at $1,200 for premier seating and $1,000 levels. Individual tickets are $75 per person. Dress for Success Tulsa is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional business attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help them thrive in work and in life, free of charge. When a client is referred, usually by an array of nonprofit organizations, government agencies, shelters, colleges and technical institutes, she receives one suit for her first job interview and is eligible for additional clothing when she secures employment to help her build a professional wardrobe. When asked what Dress for Success Tulsa does for women, Pat Simmons, president of the board, emphatically said, “A professional outfit can literally transform a person, inside and out. Most women enter these doors without much confidence, but once they spend some time with our personal shoppers and find the perfect suit, handbag, shoes and accessories, a transformation takes place. It is an emotional experience. We get a lot of smiles and hugs.” What is also unique about the organization is that not only

Page 7

does it support women by giving them professional clothing, but it also empowers their clients by providing career services. They offer pre- and post- employment courses to support their clients. Serving thousands of women in the Tulsa and surrounding communities, Dress for Success Tulsa is an empowering organization that still needs your support to continue to help clients. Not only can you attend the annual Fashion Show and Auction on September 14, but you can donate new and gentlyused clothing to either their store at 1109 S. Peoria or Dressbarn located at Tulsa Hills, which accepts donations on their behalf Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Executive Director Ronda Adkisson also mentions, “We are always in need of plus-size professional clothing and shoe sizes 9 and larger. These tend to continually be some of our greatest needs.” If you are interested in donating auction items, food or florals for the event, or want additional information regarding Dress for Success Tulsa, please contact Ronda Adkisson at (918) 599-8892 or email her at Tulsa@dressforsuccess.org.

QQuit Hiding Those Toes A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center offers a highly successful laser treatment for nail fungus. By Dwight Korgan, MD While most people never experience the serious complications of toenail fungus, known as onychomycosis, it can nevertheless have major complications such as cellulitis (local bacterial infections), osteomyelitis (bone infections) and gangrene. Most people just complain of those ugly nails that only occasionally cause minor discomfort and sometimes don’t quite clear the couch or coffee table and end up being stripped off (avulsed). Frequently not even the best nail polish will do an adequate cover up. Many women don’t wear open toed shoes and just put up with the embarrassment. This is especially true when the fingernails are involved. There are several causes such as exposure in a wet environment and trauma to the nail. Many, however, appear to be genetically impaired with the apparent inability to fight the infection. (Think: “Did either of my parents have thick ugly toenails?”) Tens of millions of Americans are afflicted with this malady, with up to one in ten people having the problem. It

Dr. Dwight Korgan of A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center. tends to be much worse in the older population and in those who have diabetes. Unfortunately, except for occasional cases caused by trauma, it rarely resolves by itself. Infections may be divided into three types: distal subungal

onychomycosis (DSO) involving the end portion of the nail, proximal subungal onychomycosis (PSO) involving the area around the cuticle, and white superficial (WSO) occurring as a powdery substance on the surface. Deformities from psoriasis,

lichen planus and trauma may cause look alike nails. While most of the time diagnosis is made by clinical inspection, culture and biopsy may be necessary in difficult cases. One challenge is that even when present, cultures may fail to grow the causative agent and may take several weeks or months to grow. Treatment is difficult because the fungus is sequestered in the nail and between the nail and the nail bed where the body’s defenses have a difficult time penetrating. Up until recently treatment was divided into topical and systemic. Topical agents include over-the-counter remedies such as mentholatum, vinegar soaks, tea tree oil and various herbal preparations. Several antifungal creams are also available over the counter. Unfortunately this class has minimal benefit except maybe in the white superficial type. Prescription topical creams and lacquers are available with only slightly higher success rate and a lot more cost. Several systemic (oral) medications are available by prescription, but have the downside risk of irritating and even damaging the liver and require monitoring with lab tests. Until recently when generics became available, these were very expensive and even now many insurances are reluctant to cover them. The best of these, terbinfine is approximately 85 percent effective. There is a relatively new treatment available now using a

YAG-1064 laser to momentarily heat the nail area and kill the fungus. Several treatments are required but last only about 15 minutes with minimal discomfort, and no risk of injury to the liver. Success rates approach 95 percent. Regardless of the treatment type, it takes six months to a year for a new non- infected nail to regrow (shorter time for fingernails and longer time for toenails). Unfortunately reinfection may occur, but in the case of the laser, a treatment every six months to one year may be all it takes to keep the fungus at bay and great looking nails. A New Image is proud to be able to offer this new treatment at an introductory rate. Initial consultation is free. There are some illnesses that would prevent using this treatment and a few screening questions will be asked before an appointment is made. So if you tired of hiding those nails, come in see our photo gallery of successes and give us a chance to show you what your nails could look like next summer.

into someone you know. “It’s a beautiful night in the garden under the stars where you taste delicious wine and food, interact with friends and strangers alike, and have a fantastic time!” The atmosphere will be highlighted with music sponsored by Mix 96. Each year, Moody’s Jewelry donates a piece of jewelry to the event. Guests may purchase a rose for $25 and will receive the chance to win a pair of diamond stud earrings. A fun new addition this year is a photo booth with a variety of props, so guests may take home a cute party favor. YYour Surgeon Can Make the Difference Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experiences with two surgeons. By Joshua Danker-Dake When Patsy Wessel, 72, of Oilton, Oklahoma, had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti this past March, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The difference in the two procedures, she says, was like night and day. “I had already had one surgery done, and it was very painful,” Wessel says. “I didn’t have a good experience with my first doctor, and I didn’t feel like my physical therapist did a very good job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good experience with him.” Wessel’s knee problems developed gradually, over decades, she says. “I’m 72 years old, and I’m in my 34th year in my job, where I walk and stand on cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cement floors. I’ve worked hard in my life, you know? You just wear your knees out.” Wessel says the knee replacement with Dr. LaButti

was an immeasurably better experience than her previous surgery. “Yes, I had pain – it’s always painful. But for a knee replacement, it was significantly better,” she says. “I had much less pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told me that the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, I was able to get up and walk without so much pain because of how well it was done. I wasn’t even on my cane or walker more than a week before I could walk by myself.” A big part of Wessel’s good experience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passive motion machine for physical therapy, and Wessel says it worked wonders. “Dr. LaButti sent me home with this machine: for two hours, three times a day, you put your leg in it, and it raises and works your knee. It worked wonderfully, and it doesn’t hurt.” Wessel says her first doctor

didn’t use that machine. “He had someone physically doing it, and they can hurt you. Sometimes I was crying by the time they finished. But with the machine, it didn’t hurt, and it kept the knee limber. It worked so well.” Overall, Wessel says, her experience was exceptional. “The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, and he was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to a number of people, and I would recommend him to anyone.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. iBlock®

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement

Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

Fundraising Event for Claremore Boy with FOP ZipperQ is a fundraising event being held at The Nut House on October 6 to raise money for Zip Gordon, a young boy battling a rare genetic disorder.

By Cheena Pazzo The Gordon family is working hard to raise awareness for their son, who is battling a rare genetic disorder called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), or “Stone Man Disease.” Zip was diagnosed with FOP in July of 2011 at age 4. Friends and family are auctioning a truck and holding a barbecue event and auction in his honor to raise money for

FOP research. FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine, affecting one in two million, with only 700 confirmed cases worldwide. It causes the bone to attack muscle, turning muscle into bone and potentially enclosing the patient in a second skeleton. ZipperQ will be held October 6, 2012 at The Nut House on historic Route 66 in

One lucky ticketholder will win this 2012 Dodge 1500 truck at the ZipperQ fundraiser.

Claremore to raise money to find a cure. All proceeds will go directly to the IFOPA and FOP research. At the event, Zip will draw the winning ticket for a 2012 Dodge 1500. The $25 tickets are available for purchase now on ZipperQ.com. In addition, teams can sign up online to participate in the barbecue competition. "We are honored to have support across the state for Zip's cause," said Amy Gordon, Zip's mother. "Thanks to the many generous donations, there will be something to suit everyone's interest, from art and music to sports and hunting." The live and silent auctions will include an original painting by famous Oklahoma artist Patrick Gordon, autographed memorabilia from Wayne Coyne – frontman for The Flaming Lips, tickets to the OU/Texas game, and a two-day duck and pheasant hunt by the nationally televised and professional guide Brady Walker. "The disease is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time. We need a cure as quickly as possible to avoid additional long-term damage," Amy added.

Arlie and Zip Gordon. "Flare-ups can occur spontaneously or following bodily trauma, such as childhood immunizations, falls while playing and viral illnesses." According to the IFOPA, the information obtained from studying this disease will have far-reaching implications for the treatment of common disorders such as fractures, osteoporosis, hip replacement surgery, and

other forms of heterotopic ossification that occur in trauma and burn victims. More information about FOP is available at www.ifopa.org. For more information, contact

CGet Like-New Cabinets Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing can make your cabinets look like new again, without sanding, dust, mess, or emptying of your cabinets. By Sheryl Sowell Anyone who is in the process of trying to sell their home knows it’s not a simple task, by any means. The first thing your realtor will tell you is that a house that looks polished and sparkling will sell much faster and for a better price than a dingy, rough-looking home. At the same time, you don’t want to make the mistake of spending tons of money to remodel or replace important aesthetic and functional items like cabinetry. Bill Kleinhans, regional manager of Tulsa, says that Gleam Guard is a perfect solution for those trying to sell their home, as well as anyone else who simply wants to spruce up their interior in a big way – without spending a lot of money, time or effort. The Gleam Guard process refinishes kitchen and bath cabinets and any other interior woodwork without sanding, dust, or mess. “People cannot believe there is no preparation involved,” says Bill. “They don’t have to move a thing out of their cabinets.” Professional craftsmen will clean the cabinets, and the Gleam Guard process will correct peels, flakes, scratches, minor nicks and imperfections. Once

Bill Kleinhans, regional manager of Tulsa Gleam Guard Wood Refinishing. the Gleam Guard hard finish is applied, like magic, the cabinets look like new. Gleam Guard eliminates the huge mess and time of

remodeling – and most jobs take only one to two days to complete. “We refinish all interior woodwork, painted or stained, and the finish will last for decades,” says

Bill. “If you walk into a kitchen that Gleam Guard did 24 years ago when owner Tracy Booth first began the company, you’d be absolutely amazed at how good it still looks.” Customers receive a five-year touchup warranty, which is transferrable to new owners. “This is a great selling point for people who are putting their home on the market,” adds Bill. “When the cabinets in a home look pristine, the value and salability of the house really increases.” The reasonable cost is another great perk. According to Bill, the sandless refinishing process of Gleam Guard costs about a third of traditional refinishing. Besides kitchen and bath cabinets, Gleam Guard can also be applied to doorframes, woodwork, paneling, baseboards and all wood trims that are painted, pickled or stained. Customers can choose a range of glosses, from a satin finish to high gloss. “We are infinitely adjustable on the type of gloss a customer wants,” says Bill. The special Gleam Guard formula bonds to the original finish, enhances the wood grain

and gives it a fresh oiled look that will never again need traditional polishing. All cleaning and finishing products used in the process are ecofriendly, and so is maintenance. Bill explains that for cleaning, dipping a cloth in warm water should do the job, but if more cleaning power is needed, add some white vinegar to the water. “If you’re doing a kitchen remodel, give us a call first. We can discuss the best time to schedule the refinishing part of the project,” Bill says. “And if anyone is thinking of replacing kitchen or bathroom cabinets, please give us a call first. Gleam Guard will be a less expensive alternative, with no dust or disruption.” Gleam Guard offers in-home price quotes, and their kiosk at Woodland Halls Mall displays samples of their amazing work. SStep Up To the Plate Tulsa’s 6th annual Restaurant Week Sept. 8-16 will benefit the Food Bank. By Sheryl Sowell In conjunction with September’s national Hunger Action Month, northeast Oklahoma restaurants are stepping up to the plate to fight hunger in our community by participating in Tulsa’s 6th annual Restaurant Week, Sept. 8-16. Thirty-four restaurants will offer three-course, prix fixe meals

of three-course lunch and dinner menus designed to suit any taste and budget. Restaurants will offer three different lunch menus at $12.95 per person and three different dinner menus at one of three varying price points. The three price points for dinner menus are either $25 per person, $35 per person or $35 for two. Each meal will feature an appetizer, entrée and dessert, and all prices exclude tax, gratuity and beverage. The Food Bank’s Food for Kids program provides a backpack of food each week during the school year to more than 4,100 students in Tulsa County at risk of going hungry during the weekend and holidays. Last year, Restaurant Week raised more than $50,000 for the Food for Kids program. “We’re excited so many of our restaurants are able to participate in Restaurant Week again this year,” said Amanda Williams, marketing and communications manager for the McNellie’s Group. “It’s a testament to Tulsa that so many great organizations can join forces to support the Food Bank and its programs. We’re proud to be part of that again this year.”

The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple iTunes store. “We’re excited to see new additions and some returning favorites to the list of participating restaurants,” said Regina Pickens, community events coordinator at the Food Bank. “It’s amazing to see how our community steps up to the plate when our kids are in need.” The event’s presenting sponsor is TulsaPeople magazine. Additional sponsors include the George Kaiser Family Foundation, News on 6, Jarboe and Waller & Company Public Relations. “We are so pleased this event continues to grow each year and is so well-received in the community,” said Jim Langdon, publisher of TulsaPeople. “Restaurant Week is a great time for Tulsans to try a new restaurant or an old favorite for a great price and cause.” For more information about Restaurant Week and its special prix fixe menus, visit TulsaPeople.com, the Tulsa Restaurant Week Facebook page or download the TulsaPeople iPad/iPhone app. For more information, contact

CGet a Leg Up on Veins Advanced Cosmetic Medicine offers solutions for unsightly and sometimes painful leg veins. By Sheryl Sowell The hot summer days are winding down – you’ve been running errands in shorts, wearing skirts to work, and hitting the pool in your swimsuit. Chances are your legs have been on display all day, every day, and you can’t help but notice all of their imperfections. For many, unsightly leg veins are a real problem. Fall will be here before you know it, and that is the perfect season to begin treatment to get rid of those unattractive and sometimes painful leg veins. Mallory Spoor-Baker, D.O., of Advanced Cosmetic Medicine suggests calling now to schedule your free consultation for leg vein therapy this upcoming cooler season. Generally, the best time of year to receive leg vein treatments is during the fall. You may experience a slight reddening or swelling of the skin after treatments (and legs can look worse before they look better), so most people prefer to keep their legs covered during this transitional period. During the cooler weather, when they are already covered up from head to toe, is an ideal time to start treatments. In addition, Dr. Spoor-Baker instructs her

patients to wear compression hosiery for two weeks, which help aid in the healing process, making treatments work better. Spider veins, also known as broken capillaries, are thin and

hormones, spider and varicose veins are more prevalent in women than in men. “Heredity and occupation, as well as overall health status, have a lot to do with whether people develop

uncomfortable and sometimes painful, the main reason most people decide to have them treated is cosmetic – they are simply unpleasant to look at. Two methods are available to eliminate unsightly leg veins. The first method is called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink. The second method is a laser procedure in which a light device uses the energy of light to damage the vessels, causing them to shut down. This treatment is used by placing a hand-held unit on the skin. Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand piece. No local anesthesia or pain medicine is needed and appointments last one hour. The number of treatments depends upon the vessels, their size, and other factors. Three to five treatments are the norm, again depending on various factors. Leg vein treatments are performed one month apart. To schedule a free consultation to begin leg vein therapy this fall, call Advanced Cosmetic Medicine at (918) 280-0270.

You Don’t Have To Be Filthy Rich was born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Ken grew up in Mesquite, Texas, enjoyed sports, and played football at OSU. Today Ken spearheads investment analysis and strategic counsel for Waterstone Private Wealth Management and has more than 20 years of experience in business administration and investment management. He is a sought-after source for national television, radio, and news outlets. Recent appearances include CNBC’s PowerLunch, Fox Business Opening Bell, The Dow Jones Newswire, and The Wall Street Journal. Melanie grew up on a farm in Arkansas. She received a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from OSU and was employed as a marriage and family counselor for 11 years. She attributes this experience for her down-to-earth, straight talking, tell-it-like-it-is style when she counsels clients today. Melanie handles the long-term, big-picture planning, client development, and financial

planning side of the business. Melanie also writes a series of articles for Value News entitled, “Ask the Money Maven.” “I write my monthly articles based on what my clients are worried or concerned about,” she says. She wrote “When a Penny Saved is not a Penny Earned” when several seniors had come to her searching for something to do with their CD’s that weren’t earning much. Many circumstances call for financial decisions, you may be going through period-of-life changes including retirement, a job change, divorce, or even settling the estate of a family member following a death. Whatever your financial situation, one of your best investments today could very well be seeking the advice of someone with the knowledge, know how and experience to help you make the most of your finances now and for the future. “A lot of folks visit our offices with questions and concerns about the options they now have as they have been affected by

recent changes in their lives,” said Melanie. Layoffs, changes in retirement plans, discontinuation of pension plans, and take-overs are all transition events that could provide opportunities for you to make new, smarter decisions with your money. “Having your retirement assets in your own IRA where you make the decisions about who will manage your money, is always a better decision than leaving it with ‘the company,’” she added. Melanie also shared, “Many people hesitate because they fear it may cost too much. You should be concerned about cost. The fees of most investments are standard across the board. They are the same no matter who you purchase them from. You are likely to pay between one and two percent of your portfolio value for a professional to manage your money. They are worth every penny. You can lose more than that in the market in a matter of minutes.” Ken added, “You don’t hear of people shopping for the cheapest doctor. Let me assure

and maternity clothing in addition to baby equipment, household furniture, software, videos, toys and much more. “Moms, dads and grandparents can get quality items for their children at amazingly low prices and still be able to buy the groceries for that month," Leffingwell said.

Families Save and Earn at JBF school. As many parents know, buying clothes, shoes and other items needed for school can get expensive. Participating in JBF is a win-win financially for both consignors and shoppers. Consignors typically make 65 percent of sales from their merchandise, while those who consign and volunteer make 70 percent. Consignors also have the advantage of creating their own prices for items no longer being used around the house. With better returns than most consignment shops can offer and far less hassle than a garage sale, consignors are able to take all their items in one day and choose to pick up or donate items that don’t sell. According to Marcy Leffingwell, one of the new owners of Just Between Friends Broken Arrow/Bixby, the prices and selection for shoppers is unrivaled, and they can find an entire season’s worth of items in one stop without spending a ton of cash. “This helps families not only eat better, they live better because JBF helps put some expendable income back in the

continued from page 1 Amber Post, franchisee of Southwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before she started organizing her own JBF events. "We were young college students, broke and on a tight budget," Post said. She had a six-monthold daughter the first time she shopped at a JBF and even then, she was a slave to fashion. Before, Post had to rely on her mom and grandma to buy the really cute things. "I could only afford to buy her the basics and shop the clearance racks, but once I discovered JBF, it was like a dream come true," she said. Suddenly Post could buy everything she wanted for her and not jeopardize her family's budget. After shopping once, she decided to consign and received a check for $75 from items she sold, and she was hooked. It was so easy to do, and a sales event has so much to offer in terms of clothes, shoes, toys, books and more for the upcoming season. Daven Tackett, owner of Just Between Friends Tulsa and cofounder of JBF, is most pleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buy children's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads

can feel good about letting their children wear and play with the items purchased. "My mother was divorced and disabled, trying to raise three girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things to make ends meet, including buying some of our clothes from resale and going to garage sales," Tackett said. "As kids, we didn't know there was any other way to buy clothes. We were just always excited and happy about getting something new to wear." Families across the nation are realizing shopping resale/consignment makes sense. Just Between Friends has two area sales coming up. Owasso will occur September 13-16 next to Reasor’s, and JBF Broken Arrow/Bixby is taking place October 11-13 at the SpiritBank Event Center. TThe Lucky Seven Local playwright Mark Ogle’s latest play tells the story of the lives of seven 1960 graduates of Neosho Falls High School. By Sheryl Sowell Local playwright Mark Ogle, who is known for his comic murder mysteries, is definitely changing it up a bit with his newest play “The Lucky Seven.” With the exception of a few comical moments, “The Lucky Seven” is a serious play. The setting is Neosho Falls High School in the small unassuming Midwestern town of Neosho Falls. There is nothing really special about either the school or town. What is special is the 1960 graduating class. This class holds many distinctions, including being the first class to graduate from the new high school building, as well as being the smallest graduating class ever, with just seven class members. They are known as “The Lucky Seven,” not simply because of their number, but for the reason for the number. This is the story of their lives. The play follows them from their graduation day through the next 50 years and the changes that occur in their lives. “Just when I think Mark has come up with all of the challenges there are to putting on a play, he writes this one that

only do they put on this event each year, but they are a designated American Red Cross shelter in case of a disaster.” The performance will be on Friday, September 28th, at the First United Methodist Church of Claremore. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the play begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 (includes dinner and show). Reservations are required and can be made by calling the church at (918) 341-4580. All money raised from this event will go to the American Red Cross to help provide immediate emergency assistance (temporary lodging, food and clothing) needed by those who experience a disaster, like a home fire. has characters aging 50 years right before your eyes. But I like a challenge or I wouldn’t like working with him,” laughed Dan Huey, the play’s director. “We are lucky to have a director the caliber of Dan Huey living here in Claremore,” said Mark Ogle. “I am always amazed how he and the cast can take the words written on a piece of paper and make them come to life.” Audience members will recognize some of the actresses and actors that have appeared in past Huey/Ogle productions, as well as some first timers. “While there won’t be a crime to solve, there is a secret to try and figure out before it is revealed,” said Ogle. This is the fourth year that the First United Methodist Church of Claremore has held this event. “I can’t thank Pastor Ray Crawford and everyone associated with the First United Methodist Church of Claremore enough for their continued support of the American Red Cross,” said Ogle. “The American Red Cross is so fortunate to have community partners like the church. TThis Ride’s a Real Dickens! Claremore Main Street presents the 6th annual Dickens of a Ride on October 6. By Duane Blankenship In the heat of summer, bicyclists in northeastern Oklahoma begin looking forward to cooler weather and the Dickens of a Ride bicycle tour through the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding Claremore. The ride is sponsored by Claremore Main Street, Inc. and supports their many programs and projects throughout the year. Proceeds from the ride help fund preservation efforts, economic development, and special projects including planters, trees, benches and public art. Dickens of a Ride attracts cyclists from Oklahoma and adjoining states. Ride options include distances of 30, 50, 62 and 100 miles. And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is less than ten miles. This is a good ride for beginning cyclists or for young families. Longer bike routes begin and end at Gazebo Park at Muskogee Avenue and Will Rogers Boulevard. Riders will head west out of Claremore through scenic country sides to Oologah. From there, they will cycle areas surrounding

Claremore Lake. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through challenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are invited to attend a reception at the Gazebo, where light refreshments will be served. There will also be lots of really nice door prizes awarded by drawings as participants return to the Gazebo for a little rest and recuperation. Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett says, “The Boomarang Diner is offering a great Breakfast Ride Special beginning at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.” It will include one egg, two pieces of bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and gravy, and hash brown potatoes. Milk, coffee or juice is not included with the special, but may be purchased separately. There will also be nine well-supplied rest stops along the bike routes where riders look forward to sitting a spell and taking advantage of numerous home baked goodies and fruit. Excellent mechanical and SAG support will be provided on the Dickens of a Ride until

5 p.m. Be sure to wear your ANSI, CPSC, or Snell approved helmet if you plan on participating in the ride; it’s required. Visit the www.downtownclaremore.org to register online. Or if you prefer, you may print a registration form, fill it out, and mail it in with your check. Riders may purchase a long-sleeve Dickens of a Ride commemorative T-shirt for $18. You must order your T-shirt by September 4 to receive one. Janice Whittaker, co-owner of Bike-About Bicycles, says, “Registration packets may be picked up at Bike-About on Thursday, October 4 until 8 p.m. You may also get your packet beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the ride.” Maps will be provided, and you need to be prepared for some hills. Riders under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is also on a bicycle and riding with them. Riders under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a Ride Release. Major sponsors of the 2012 Dickens of a Ride include RCB Bank, CPCO Company, Walmart, BancFirst, Amazing Melton Sales, Urgent Care,

Dickens of a Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett and event sponsor Janice Whittaker of Bike-About Bicycles show off some stylish cycling togs. Bike-About Bicycles & Touring Shop, and Boomarang Diner. Many thanks to each of them and to each of the riders who help make Dickens of a Ride one of the best in the state of Oklahoma.
