TFI Family Connections offers extensive training and continued support to foster parents. By Carol Beck-Round
Imagine you are a child who has been abused or neglected in the only home you have ever known. Suddenly, you are taken from your “nest” by those who claim they want to help you – but it doesn’t feel that way when you are placed in strange living surroundings and even into a new school. The home you knew before may not have seemed welcoming, but neither does the new world you’ve just entered. And to make it even worse, you have no control over the situation and none of it is your fault. Unfortunately, this is all too common a scenario for

children who are removed from their homes for their own protection. According to Jason Cecil and Kyle Becker of TFI Family Connections, their organization works hard to change all of that, with priorities of restoring families and keeping children in foster homes in their home areas. But the biggest obstacle facing the achievement of this goal is a lack of foster homes. “In the last year in Tulsa County, for example, 1,700 children have been removed from their homes,” said Cecil. “But there are currently only 217 foster homes available.” Becker attributes part of this problem to the fear and misunderstanding that often surround these children’s situations. “Foster care has a lot of negative stigma associated with it, but we’ve found that people who get involved as foster parents realize that these children are not at fault and have just come out of bad situations of abuse and neglect,” said Becker. “They just need a home to care for them and someone to stay with.” The foster care system in Oklahoma was previously regulated by DHS, but due to recent legislative changes, the agency now works hand in hand with the privately owned TFI Family (continued on page 28)

Ballard Brings Experience and Leadership Matt Ballard seeks the position of district attorney of District 12. By Lorrie Ward
Experience and leadership: these are two qualities that Claremore attorney, former prosecutor, and Republican Matt Ballard hopes to bring to the office of district attorney of the twelfth district, which includes Rogers, Mayes and Craig Counties. “I believe the focus of the district attorney’s office should be on putting criminals behind bars and standing up for the constitutional and God-given rights of law abiding citizens,” said Ballard. “It is the responsibility of the district attorney to be the people’s voice in the courtroom and to bring justice to those who break our laws. community. The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services are proud to present the 11th annual Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament on
Friday, June 20 at Claremore’s Heritage Hills Golf Course. The tournament features a four-person scramble. Individuals and businesses can get involved by playing in the tournament (by entering a four-person team for $300 or as an individual for $75), or by donating to a sponsorship. The cost of individual and team entries includes breakfast and lunch. Many sponsorship opportunities are available including: Hole Sponsor, Breakfast Sponsor, Corporate Sponsor and Radio Sponsor. The radio sponsorship includes airtime in which you speak with radio hosts and promote your business. Funds are used to further the missions and goals of both sponsoring organizations, each of which are dedicated to benefiting the youth of Rogers County. “This tournament helps RCYS bridge the gap that is not provided for through state and area grants,” says Steve Blahut,

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
DIVORCE: IF IT’S TIME TO GO... GET YOUR DUCKS IN A ROW! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Divorce can be very overwhelming. You need reliable information before you make any decisions. Surround yourself with a team of supportive folks including a reliable attorney, financial advisor, therapist, clergy, and friends. While in the early stages of decision making and grief over the loss of your marriage, it can be challenging to think clearly. Several times a year I witness the sad outcome of what happens when folks go through a divorce unprepared. Here are a few things to think about regarding the cost of divorce and how assets may be divided depending on your situation. According to divorce and mediation attorney Laura Baysinger, the average cost of an uncontested, agreed upon divorce in Oklahoma is $1,500-$1,800. The cost of a contested, litigated divorce usually starts at $15,000 per party and up. The cost of a mediated divorce varies depending on how many hours of mediation is required, but the average is $800 with a filing fee of $198. In an interview with Baysinger, she stated that in Oklahoma, assets and liabilities are divided equitable but not necessarily equally (50-50). Investment accounts, IRA/401k accounts, pensions, the cash value of whole life insurance
policies, businesses, homes, and other assets are counted as part of the marital estate. Liabilities are also counted. After all of these items are taken into account the marital assets may be divided equitably. Accounts held separately throughout the marriage that were attained before the marriage began, inherited and gifted money, and assets that were never co-mingled may not be counted in the marital estate. The following are Four Financial Tips for Folks Considering Divorce: 1) Get Informed. Gather all the documents pertaining to your assets and liabilities: account statements, mortgage balance, credit card balance, IRA and 401k values, any loans against 401ks, brokerage statements, student loans, etc. From these documents create a balance sheet to show what you own and what you owe. 2) Review Joint IRS tax returns for the past 3 years. Your
returns will report your annual marital income, whether it came from salary, bonuses, interest, dividends, and property or partnership income. 3) If you are a stay-at-home mom, be sure to calculate your worth. Just because you don’t earn outside income, doesn’t mean you don’t bring added value to the household budget. List every activity you do that saves the household money (i.e.: cooking, transporting kids, grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning the house, etc.). Calculate what it would cost to hire someone outside the family to do each task and then add up the dollar amount. 4) Make a list of your family’s current monthly household expenses and create a mock budget. Include food, insurance, mortgage, electric, car payment, etc. Next, you will need to do some homework to figure out your “after divorce” anticipated budget. Remember, get your ducks in a row! TTop Quality Paints Spectrum Paint opens a Claremore location for commercial users and homeowners. By Carol Beck-Round In 1986, with the advice and financial backing from his father, Travis Detter started Spectrum Paint Company. His mission? To bring the customer top quality products at competitive prices using the best possible service. Travis started his business out of a mini-storage building, targeting industrial accounts. Since then, the independent paint dealer has grown from one employee to 250. His father, John, joined the company in 1995. When Travis began his business almost 30 years ago, he only had six months of paint industry experience. All that changed, and the company has experienced consistent growth over the past two decades. It’s a testament to their commitment to be a leading supplier of architectural, commercial and industrial coatings. Spectrum Paint opened a Claremore location in October of 2013. Travis, who is from Claremore – and a current resident – has grown the original Tulsa location into 48 locations in seven states to become the largest independent paint dealer in the United States. “Along with Travis, part owners John Detter and Roddy Russo are longtime Claremore residents,” says Gentry Stafford, marketing and communications
director. “Spectrum has grown in larger markets, but it was always a thought that we would have a store in Claremore someday. Spectrum has around 15 employees that live in Claremore and it felt like a great time to do it.” “We strive to offer the flexibility and response time of a small company, yet offer our customers a broader and more complete product offering than
any ‘company’ owned store or home center,” Gentry adds. Spectrum carries Benjamin Moore Paints and PPG Pittsburgh Paints, two of the most respected paint manufacturers and leaders in technology. “We also distribute stains, lacquers, high performance and specialty coatings to provide a complete offering of paint and related products,” she says. Each Spectrum location also
has delivery vehicles to make sure customers receive their product on time and in satisfactory condition. Spectrum has field representatives throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina and South Carolina whose job is to make product recommendations, provide technical assistance and solve problems on site when necessary. In addition, Spectrum Paint has three repair service centers to meet the commercial and industrial equipment needs of companies. Located at 15247 E. Skelly Dr. in Tulsa, in Springdale, Arkansas and in Grandview, Missouri, the company provides sales and service to Graco Industrial and Com-

mercial equipment, Titan/Speeflo, Spraytech, Airlessco, Kremlin/ Sames, Binks and Devilbiss, and pressure washing equipment. However, commercial and industrial customers aren’t the only ones who like Spectrum Paint. “We’ve had a very welcoming response from area residents and business leaders in Claremore,” says Gentry. “One of the biggest questions we get is ‘Do you sell to regular homeowners or do-ityourselfers?’” The answer is yes, she adds. “Because we do a lot of business with commercial, industrial and residential contractors, some people think they can’t just come in and buy paint. We have a great range of products for DIY customers and even have a special menu of products where we have priceshopped and guaranteed comparable sundry products to be the same or lower price than the big box stores. We also share a lot of great stuff on our Facebook and Pinterest pages for folks looking for color inspiration.” Spectrum Paint is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Time for Ladies FFitness Continues Expansion Phase one of expansion includes a larger Zumba room and spinning classes. By Carol Beck-Round After relocating last year to accommodate the growing needs of area women, Fitness Time for Ladies, a 24/7 facility, is in a two-phase process of expansion, according to Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, owner. Because the former facility’s location on Highway 20 East did not allow room for growth, Dr. Hrdlicka moved the business to the current location last year to 3075 Medical Parkway at the corner of Highway 66 North and Lowery Road. Phase one of the expansion should be completed by the end of this month. With the expansion, the overall square footage will increase from 4,400 to 6,000. “We are enlarging the Zumba room,” he says. Currently, the floor space for the popular women’s workout room is 700 square feet. When finished, the square footage will more than double to 1,500. Six Zumba fitness classes are offered during the week. Recently, to add to the fun, a Zumba Glow class was held on a Friday evening. “The class was full,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “Class members were dressed up in black glow clothes. Then they turned off the lights in all the rooms while they exercised. They had a lot of fun. The class
instructors, Kayla, Tammy and Debra, plan to have another Glow Zumba class when the floor is completed.” Other phase one expansion plans include the addition of All Motion Trainer (AMT) cardio bikes. According to Dr. Hrdlicka, the AMT bikes are a combination Stair Stepper and Elliptical Trainer, burning calories at a higher rate than other cardio equipment. Another component of the phase one expansion includes the addition of 10 spin bikes and a spin class. For those ladies who enjoy kickboxing classes, phase one will also include the addition of kick bags. The shower and bathroom facilities are being doubled to accommodate the growing membership at Fitness Time. More lockers are also being added. Phase two expansion will begin later this year according to Dr. Hrdlicka, who is excited about the facility’s growth. With the expansion of the Infrared Sauna and the addition of more massage chairs, the amenities will create an oasis for members to relax and refresh after their workout. “We also plan to add a coffee and breakfast bar
in the massage room,” he adds. “Many of our members exercise in the morning before work, then shower here and get dressed before leaving. We wanted to add the coffee and breakfast bar so they can grab both before heading out the door.” In addition to Zumba fitness classes and kickboxing, Fitness Time offers step and regular aerobics, yoga, yoga flexibility mix, Piyo – a combination pilates/ yoga class, Turbo Kick and Total Tone. To see the current schedule of classes, check out their website. If you “like” Fitness Time for Ladies on Facebook, you can also get daily updates on class changes and closings. Evening classes are 50 minutes long while classes during the lunch hour run 45 minutes. A full line of aerobic exercise equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair steppers and elliptical machines, all outfitted with televisions, as well as Nautilus strength training equipment and free weights help also club members get in tip-top shape. A child care room with a security system is available so mothers can view their children on the closed circuit TVs while working

They do not, however, offer child care. Fitness Time is also an allinclusive gym, which means there are no extra charges for fitness classes or tanning. When you pay your monthly fee, you have full use of the facility, including tanning. You get the whole gym for the price of a tanning membership. “What we are trying to do is to constantly keep adding and updating so women will be excited about
coming in to work out in a nice environment,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. For more information, contact

RReal Men Love Pink House Why not take your father to the Pink House for his special day this month? Claremore’s famous restaurant and tea house is not just for women! By Carol Beck-Round Although the exterior and interior walls are pink, that doesn’t stop men from heading to Claremore’s famous restaurant and tea house for lunch Monday through Saturday, or for dinner on Friday nights. When you walk through the doors of the Victorian-era house, you’ll see pink everywhere. While many men might be turned off by the restaurant name and the color, once they taste the made-fromscratch food, they continue to return to the Claremore landmark to eat. “The pink doesn’t bother them once they’ve tasted the food,” says owner Margo Stewart. “We have businessmen as well as blue collar workers who enjoy dining here. The Pink House isn’t just for women.” When Margo bought the Pink House restaurant and tea room in 2007, she knew she had big shoes to fill. Opened in 1982, the business has become a northeastern Oklahoma destination for those who love not only the tasty food, but the atmosphere. While the menu variety appeals to a wide array of palates, male diners have come to appreciate some of the heartier fare. “We get lots of compliments on our Reuben sandwich,” says Stewart.
The pink walls and décor don’t seem to bother male diners once they taste the made-from-scratch food at the Pink House, located in a Victorian-era house in Claremore. Owner Margo Stewart always welcomes diners with a smile.
“I’ve had many men tell me they really enjoy it.” Most people don’t like change, but when Margo and the staff at the famous Pink House decide to shake up the menu with specials or add those specials to the regular menu, customers don’t mind. Whether it’s a new entrée or dessert, there’s always something new to anticipate at the restaurant. Currently, the staff is working on new menu items for each category: quiche, sandwiches, soups and salads – and of course, dessert. They recently added sweet watermelon tea and two flavors of iced coffees, vanilla and caramel. While the popular dining establishment also offers daily specials, some of the entrées end up on the regular menu. For example, a hefty BLT, often popular with male diners, has become a staple. Earlier this year, the Pink House began offering cooking and baking classes, taught by Shari Beguin, catering director and Margo’s daughter. She will be offering her pie crust class again in June. For $30 per person, class participants will be provided with everything they need to make eight pie crusts. Because of the kitchen size, the class is limited to four; however, more classes will be offered as there is an interest, she says. Check the Pink House’s Facebook page to find out the exact class date and to sign up. Other cooking and baking classes will be offered, depending on the interest of people. “We encourage those who are interested to visit our Facebook page
and let us know what classes you would like to see us offer,” she adds. Classes are offered in the evening with prices based on the supplies needed for the project. Customers are also encouraged to “like” the restaurant on Facebook and check for each day’s specials. In the past, they have offered free half-baked fudge for the day. “High Tea,” centering on the serving of freshly brewed tea, is also offered at the establishment. Tea parties are scheduled after hours beginning at 2 p.m. and are customized to meet the desires of the guests. Reservations are required. Open for lunch Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the restaurant offers Friday night (5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) dinner with rib eyes and meat loaf as well as two other entrées, which change weekly. The menu is posted each Friday at their Facebook page. “Father’s Day would be a great time to bring dads to eat on a Friday night,” says Margo. If you’re too busy for a Friday night, you can still take him out to lunch.

CCounty Commissioner: More than Roads and Bridges
Ron Burrows hopes to educate the public on the position of commissioner so they can make an informed decision at the polls on June 24, 2014. By Lorrie Ward Most people have heard the words “county commissioner,” having seen them on political and public announcement signs, in newspaper articles, and on voting ballots. But there are many people who don’t really understand what a county commissioner actually does. A large portion of the public knows that the office oversees the
construction of roads and bridges, but Ron Burrows, who is running for the Republican ticket spot for District 3 Rogers County Commissioner, has researched the position he is seeking thoroughly. He wants to educate people on what it actually takes to be a successful commissioner so that they can make an intelligent and informed
Ron Burrows hopes to become the next Rogers County Commissioner for District 3.
decision in the voting booth. The County Training Program website of Agricultural Economics Extension: Oklahoma Cooperative County Training Program describes the job thusly: “The members of the Board of County Commissioners are the principal administrators and business managers of the county.” It goes on to point out that most people associate the job with county road construction and bridges, but in reality, there is much more responsibility with the position. “As members of the Board of County Commissioners, they also have the power to make orders and authorizations, to inspect and approve county programs and facilities, to supervise the financial affairs of the county, to develop personnel policies, to investigate the performance of other county officers, to make agreements affecting the welfare of the citizens of the county, and much, much more,” the site continues. As if this isn’t enough, there is even more: “As the chief fiscal entity of the county (except in Budget Board Counties), the Board of County Commission-
ers is in charge of receiving and expending funds and, therefore, must make major financial decisions and transactions, prepare budgets, award contracts, and act on claims.” Ron Burrows was undaunted by this list of responsibilities, as he feels his work experience in road construction, employee and budget management, and public service have prepared him for the position. He began his career in road construction and after working there for 11 years, he entered the retail sector, and worked for 18 years in management for Kmart and Lowes. It was during this time that he learned to work with large budgets. These stores could generate income ranging from $15 million annually in the smallest to $60 million in the largest store. In addition, he managed between 75 and 200 employees at various stores, depending on each individual store’s sales volume. For the past five years, Burrows has served as the general manager of Claremore Expo Center, which has seen much growth and improvements under his leadership. “I feel I can facilitate and be part of good communication and conversation with a multitude of groups to accomplish a goal,” Burrows states. But he feels that the job of County Commissioner is complicated enough that potential commissioners should have to pass a certification test, and stand-
ing commissioners should have to test to demonstrate they are worthy of retention. In the Oklahoma House of Representative’s current session, Legislator Marty Quinn proposed a bill that would have set such requirements, but the bill was killed by lobbyists before it could be presented. Burrows was disappointed that it did not pass because he says, “The job of commissioner has gotten complicated enough that it requires some kind of qualification. When entities are handling millions of dollars, they need proper training and testing to demonstrate they can do it.” Even with Burrows’ years of experience in managing large groups of employees, devising and executing complicated budgets, and overseeing large projects, he would not seek to exclude himself from such requirements. “This is about demonstrating to the citizens of Rogers County that I am committed if elected to take all training available as well as the certification exam to ensure I’m prepared to fulfill the role of County Commissioner for District 3,” he says. Wine, Eats & Easels to Benefit W Broken Arrow Neighbors
The annual evening of food, wine, art and music will be held Friday, June 13 in downtown Broken Arrow. By Adam J. Foreman It’s a great party, but an even greater cause, as the Wine, Eats & Easels event returns to Broken Arrow on Friday, June 13, 2014, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance at several ticket outlets and $50 at the door the night of the event. This year’s event will again be held at the Farmer’s Market and Broken Arrow Historical
Society Museum, both located in downtown Broken Arrow at 418 S. Main St. Patrons are treated to an evening of food, wine, art and music. Dozens of wine vendors from across the area come together with local food establishments to create an atmosphere of taste and culture. Nearly a dozen artists will be on site displaying their work
for sale and also be performing live art exhibits. And local jazz enthusiast Grady Nichols will also be on hand to perform again as this year’s headliner. The most rewarding aspect of the evening is the cause the event celebrates. Proceeds go to benefit Broken Arrow Neighbors, which helps aid area families who need extra assistance with clothing, money,
school supplies, medical help and other unexpected situations. “We are so excited to move our event to June instead of October as it has been in the past,” said event chair LaTonya Cundiff. “The weather seems to be better and makes people want to celebrate outdoors. Plus, it allows us to get the message out of how important Broken Arrow
Page 11
Neighbors is to this community. Our corporate sponsors are the lifeblood of this event, and we are always interested in having more join the team!” Partnering with the Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council, the event brings together some of the most eclectic and diverse artists from across the region. Artists have their art for sale and stick around to talk to patrons about their work. In addition to the food, wine and art, special surprises will be on hand as well, including the world famous Butt Sketch artists, a wine pull, live art demonstrations, photo booths and more. Wine, Eats & Easels is presented by the Friends of Broken Arrow, Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council, the City of Broken Arrow and the Broken Arrow Historical Society Museum. Tickets are available at all AVB Bank locations, Holiday Inn Express in Broken Arrow next to Bass Pro Shops, Epic Salon and Broken Arrow Neighbors. For more information and an ongoing update of the list of vendors, or like us on Facebook at facebook.com/wineeatsandeaselsba. Corporate sponsorships are vital to this event are also still available. CChair-itable Event Benefits Volunteers for Youth The first ever Chair-ity Auction will be Thursday, June 26 at Claremore Community Center and will feature repurposed and hand-decorated chairs up for bid.
By Lorrie Ward Once upon a time, a tiny child’s rocking chair hung in Mendy Stone’s shed, collecting dust and holding memories of days gone by when Mendy’s children were small. But one day not long ago, Mendy saw the little chair’s potential. She took it down from its peg, dusted it off, and took it to her weekly meeting with a junior high student named Kealy that she mentors through Rogers County Volunteers for Youth’s PAL program. Since that time, the two ladies have worked hard, sanding and painting the chair to get it ready for the inaugural Chair-ity Auction, sponsored by Volunteers for Youth to raise awareness and funds for its various programs. Mendy and Kealy are decorating the little chair around the theme from a Mother Goose nursery rhyme: “What are little boys made of? Snips and snails and puppy dog tails, that’s what little boys are made of!” Mendy and her niece are decorating another chair of the same size in honor of the other half of the same nursery rhyme: “What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of!” These chairs will join other hand-decorated chairs and small furnishings at the auction, being held Thursday, June
26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Claremore Community Center. Just as Mendy saw potential in the small chair hanging in her storage shed, she sees potential in the youth of Rogers County, which is why she and others like her give their time to Volunteers for Youth. This willingness to see the good in a situation and to not give up on things that would seem daunting to others is what makes Mendy Stone such a wonderful mentor who lives up to the stated mission of the organization: “to positively impact the lives of our youth with an overall vision that Rogers County youth succeed. These programs build confidence and character in our young people.” The programs include BLAST, where 6th, 7th and 8th graders meet after school for help with homework and some fun. StepUp offers supervised monitoring and support for first time juvenile offenders and those showing signs of delinquent behavior by giving them an opportunity to “get back on track” and avoid the overcrowded juvenile justice system. Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Project works toward a goal of substance abuse reduction amongst youth, with particular emphases on alcohol and prescrip-
tion drug misuse. U-Turn Academy strives to live up to its name by targeting Rogers County youth who are on long term suspension from area schools. The Chair-ity Auction offers a great chance for community members to exercise their creativity and support these worthy causes. Interested parties can
participate in one or both of the following ways: they may create an auction entry, using their imaginations to creatively “alter, embellish, reconstruct, reimagine and repurpose something that will start a bidding war,” says Mendy. Or they may buy a ticket for $15 or two for $25 and attend the auction, where they may browse and
bid on items and even cast their ballots in the form of dollars for their favorite entry in hopes that it will win the “People’s Choice” award. Half the money in the winning ballot box will be offered to the People’s Choice Winner. Entrants and participants alike will be treated to barbecue and live country music by Claremore High School student Blake Lillard, and will have the chance to learn to line dance. “These last few months with Kealy have gone by so fast!” Mendy adds. “I hope she will be at the auction to help start a bidding war.” As for the chair, Mendy couldn’t be more pleased at the outcome. “Sometimes I tend to hang onto things for longer than I should,” she says. “But in this case I think it turned out all right.” Or maybe, as Goldilocks would say, that chair is “just right!”

Need A Vehicle? No Credit? No Problem. Car Country can help you build your credit and put you in a clean, reliable vehicle.
By Duane Blankenship If you have no credit or need to reestablish your credit, Car Country can help. Manager Toby Anglen has been at the Bixby location for three years, and he loves putting customers in the vehicle they desire while helping them rebuild their credit. “You buy here and you pay here,” says Toby. “And we can help virtually anyone get credit approval to buy a car, truck or SUV.” Car Country is locally owned and operated by Robert Nelson and the Nelson Group. The Car Country concept began about five years ago at the Bixby location, and today there are stores in Broken Arrow, Bartlesville, Claremore and Sapulpa. Each location generally features vehicles that are three to eight years old with acceptable mileage, and each vehicle is sold with a power train warranty. The price range of the offerings at Car Country generally falls between $7,995 and $14,900. “You can be assured that there will be no high pressure selling tactics when you’re on our lot,” assured Toby. “It’s just not the way we operate.” If you don’t see the vehicle you’re looking for when you visit the Bixby location, they will gladly assist you in finding it. If one of the other stores doesn’t have an automobile to your liking, there’s a chance Toby and his team may be able to find it after you describe
what you have in mind. “All you need to do to get the ball rolling with Car Country is to come in with proof of income, proof of your ability to get automobile insurance, show us your driver’s license, and we’ll help you
fill out a credit application,” said Toby. Then you can begin the process of picking out a vehicle that will suit your loan payment schedule and driving requirements. Once you’ve been credit approved, you will be required to make a
small down payment on the vehicle you’ve chosen. Payments will be set up with due dates around your paydays and you’ll have up to 36 months to pay off the loan. “All of our pre-owned vehicles make a visit to our Car Country
Service Facility located in Sapulpa prior to being put on a Car Country lot,” said Toby. Each car or truck is serviced and safety checked by one of their tech experts. “We take really good care of our customers,” said Toby, “from the time they come shopping with us, through helping them re-establish their credit.” If you’ve been hit with bad credit and are having a difficult time getting it back on a favorable track, visit Toby and his team at Car Country. They have a few simple guidelines you must meet, but they’re going to do everything possible to get you back in the game with favorable credit while they put you in the driver’s seat of the vehicle you’ve been wanting. TTeamwork and Planning Keep Fraudsters Away RCB Bank offers tips to help protect your money when traveling this summer.
By Jocelyn Wood Are you planning a summer vacation? Know this. Fraudsters are planning a vacation of their own and hoping to fund it with your hard-earned money. Stop fraud in its tracks with these simple steps, offered by RCB Bank’s Fraud Team. Team up with your bank. Most banks have fraud departments that are constantly monitoring customer transactions, looking for unusual or high-risk activity. They set up blocks where fraud is trending and keep up-to-date on the latest scams and national breaches, like last year’s Target compromise. “Think of us as a police force trying to stop crime before it happens,” says D. Meyer, RCB Bank Fraud. Contact your bank well in advance of your trip to let them know where you will be traveling. This will not only ensure that your debit card will work outside your home state, but it will also alert your bank to keep a watchful eye on your account. Be sure to give them your cell phone number(s) too, so your bank can reach you during your trip if fraud is attempted. “Banks may block your debit card if they suspect fraud (i.e. purchase made out-of-state),” Meyer said. “This is to protect you and your money. Know your bank’s fraud hotline number. Keep it
handy in case you have troubles with your card. RCB Bank’s fraud hotline is conveniently listed on the back of their debit cards.” Be a savvy travel planner. Avoid acting on unsolicited emails or phone calls regarding free trips, promises of reduced air fare, travel clubs or offers that involve highpressure sales pitches that urge for you to commit right away because the offer will “expire” soon. There are lots of scams out there currently. Never provide card information for a “processing fee.” When using a travel agency, make certain first that the company is registered with the American Society of Travel Agents and to check out the Better Business Bureau rating. Get everything in writing before paying for the trip. Watch for vague promises of “five-star” resorts or luxury cruise ships at “cut-rate prices” – obtain as much information as possible (in writing) about the total cost, any restrictions that may apply, and the exact names/locations of any promised hotels, airlines, etc. Read the fine print! Beware of cancellation policies. Avoid, like the plague, any travel agency or company that mandates arbitration for disputes. Don’t give up your legal rights! Avoid renting a house or cabin that you have not seen.
There are many vacation rentals available, but for every legitimate one, there is one falsely advertised. There is an ongoing scam where fraudsters advertise homes for rent and require payment up front. When the vacationer arrives, there is no home or it is occupied by the real owner. Don’t fall prey to these scams! Use your debit card wisely. Avoid using it at secluded ATMs and out-of-state fuel pumps, if possible. You can purchase a pre-paid VISA card from RCB Bank for making fuel purchases and other expenses. Avoid using your debit card for online purchases, unless there is the “https://” or Verisign or similar security feature. Don’t assume it’s safe. Click on the Verisign symbol to confirm it’s legit. Scammers use Jpeg images of official symbols (with no link) to trick you. Watch your card, keep it secure, and never leave it in your car or unattended. Never share your PIN or give permission to a family member to use it, unless you will approve all their transactions in the future. Always carry another form of payment (money, traveler’s checks, etc.) as a backup. If fraud is attempted, your card has to be closed down to protect your
RCB Bank’s Sean McKee always has a backup form of payment when traveling. A little pre-planning can save you big this summer. Enjoy your trip and don’t invite fraudsters. RCB Bank’s Fraud Department is happy to answer any questions you may have. Toilets Are Serious Business! I recently caught part of an episode of “This Old House” where they are supposed to showcase the latest and greatest in home repair and maintenance…In this particular episode the plumber rides into some town in Wyoming on horseback to help a homeowner install a new toilet in an unfinished bathroom…Crazy right? So here’s the thing, by most standards he did a fine job and that toilet installation may serve its owners without consequence for many years, but I just wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the differences between standard installs and the Half Moon “Plumbing with Purpose” installs. Toilets are the one fixture that you never want to leak, especially on the drain side. You want that stuff to go away and never return. Below is a step-by-step breakdown of the process and comparison of the “This Old House” (TOH) method to the “Half Moon Plumbing” (HMP) method: 1. (TOH) used a plastic anchoring ring 1. (HMP) always uses a metal anchoring ring 2. (TOH) actually did properly anchor the flange on this step 2. (HMP) properly anchors the flange to the foundation with heavy duty non-corrosive screws. A solid foundation is vital to a proper install. 3. (TOH) installed toilet bolts with no additional anchors 3. (HMP) installs toilet bolts with additional anchors on each side of bolts for added strength at the flange’s weakest point 4. (TOH) added wax ring on this step. Wax rings are impressionable and can compromise their seal when leveling the toilet. 4. (HMP) adds thin layer of silicone to metal flange to protect against corrosion, then adds a (wax-free) sani-seal (not impressionable) 5. (TOH) installed toilet onto the bolts and tightened evenly 5. (HMP) installs toilet onto bolts, LEVEL, and tightens evenly 6. (TOH) cut bolts and installed cover cap 6. (HMP) cuts bolts, re-tightens bolts and installs cover caps This may seem extreme but, we actually offer a 3-year warranty on some of our “Plumbing with Purpose” toilet installs. As I said earlier toilets are serious business and we want your “business” as well as ours to be good!

Goodwill Recognizes Annual Award Recipients
Goodwill Industries of Tulsa celebrates a year of accomplishments. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa provides work opportunities, job training and support services for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment and envisions a community where all people have the training and opportunities they need to be successful in the workplace. Goodwill President David Oliver said, “We strive to meet the highest standards of ethics and account-
ability while treating all people with dignity and respect.” The organization embraces diversity in the individuals they serve, the programs they offer and among the workforce that makes up the Goodwill organization. “We provide services that help people help themselves,” added Oliver. On May 6, 2014, Goodwill celebrated the 2013 accomplishments at the annual Awards
Luncheon. Over 650 employees, clients, board members, community leaders and other business partners and friends of Goodwill joined in the celebration at Southern Hills Marriott Hotel. Award presentations were made by Kristin Dickerson, evening news anchor, KTUL. Kelsey O’Halloran received the Employee of the Year Award. Kelsey is a donation attendant at

the 38th and Harvard location. She greets donors with a wonderful smile, helps take donations into the work site, and is always willing to lend a helping hand and offer a kind word. Kelsey has been a guest speaker at National Conference Sessions for the Williams Syndrome Association, was nominated Oklahoma Special Olympics “Athlete of the Year” and lit the torch at the Opening Ceremonies. Kelsey was also an ambassador for Oklahoma Special Olympics and served on the local chapter of Tulsa People First. Abigail Abate was recognized as Achiever of the Year. Before moving to Tulsa, she developed a school district tutoring program in Kansas, where she was responsible for 175 volunteers who were matched with students. Everything changed when Abigail had a brain aneurysm that left her with lasting residual effects that she now deals with on a daily basis. Abigail was led to Goodwill’s Job Connection program in 2013. There she was referred to the Goodwill TulsaWORKS job training program, where she participated in multiple skill training classes. She was especially drawn to the Private Security Program, because both of her sons are in law enforcement and she was intrigued with the field of criminal justice. With her good work ethic and outstanding attitude, Abigail completed her training and in 2013 she achieved her goal by completing an application for G4S Security Company. She was hired soon thereafter and works as a security officer at the Citiplex

Towers in Tulsa. The 2013 Graduate of the Year Award winner is Kyler Patrick, who began his association with Goodwill as a high school senior in Owasso, where he was a student in Goodwill’s Transitional Work Adjustment Program. He learned what employers expected in the workplace, how to take instruction and how to behave on the job. Kyler also received valuable work experience in a Goodwill retail store and learned how to interact with customers. In 2013, Kyler was referred to Goodwill’s Supported Employment Program to discover his work interests and skills. Ultimately, he applied for work at Mazzio’s Italian Eatery in Owasso, where the manager and staff were charmed and confident Kyler could play a role in their establishment. The position of “personality” was created specifically for Kyler, and he now busses and cleans tables, keeps the dining room clean, and uses his charming personality to provide exemplary customer service. Thank you, Tulsa, for helping individuals who have overcome considerable challenges to meet their goals. For more information, contact

AA Passion for Helping People Quit Liberty Vapor owner Tyler Lewis cares about helping his customers live happier lives without cigarettes. By Mark Roe Like any industry, the burgeoning e-cigarette market has its own jargon. Tyler Lewis, owner of Liberty Vapor, a Catoosa e-cigarette retailer, is enthusiastic when explaining the lingo associated with the relatively new technology. “First of all,” said Lewis, “there is no smoke involved. What is drawn into the lungs is a vapor consisting of nicotine, water, glycerin (a vegetable product used in many cooking spays), propylene glycol (which is the most common artificial sweetener used in food and soft drinks) and a combination of artificial flavors and coloring.” According to Lewis, when he got out of the military in 2011, he decided to start his own business. Lewis says that like many entrepreneurs, he wanted to find a niche to call his own. Lewis said the inspiration to go into the retail vapor business came from close to home. “When I got home (from the military), I started a custom coating business called HydroCustoms doing hydro-graphic printing on firearms, car interiors, and motorcycles. I had an employee at the time, Scott Kelley, who smoked Camel non-filters for upwards of 35 years,” said Lewis. “At the time a family member of mine was sell-
ing Ego c kits and Kelley picked one up. To our amazement, he never smoked again. I knew there was something to this, so I got in touch with my family and we started Liberty Vapor.” At Liberty Vapor, Lewis offers four lines of commercially made juice as well as his own line of juice which he produces in his on-site kitchen. “Anyone is welcome to come in and inspect our facilities. We are very committed to the highest standards of cleanliness and
purity in our products,” said Lewis. The dangers of tobacco smoking, dipping and chewing are undeniable. According to Lewis, “There are more than 4,000 chemicals in most major-label tobacco products; there are only four ingredients in most of our juices, and those are ingredients we typically consume every day anyway.” According to Lewis, looming tobacco regulation will cost people money. “Cigarette taxes have resulted in a net loss of revenue to
states. Gary Becker, an economist who has studied the long-run price elasticity of cigarettes, says that the tax increase as a result of the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act increases the price of cigarettes 13.3 percent, which ultimately means a 10.6 percent decrease in unit sales. The National Tax Foundation calculates these numbers to determine a predicted $1 billion loss for states, not to mention loss of sales revenue for retailers. If
Page 25
put upon small retailers specializing in just this product, it could, and most likely will, put me out of business due to the increasing cost of E-juice. It will also cost people who need this product to go back to standard tobacco products.” “We just want to help people have a better and happier life,” added Lewis. Lewis, a former smoker himself, said, “This is more than a business, this is a passion. We have been saved by vaping; cigarettes had control of our lives, as well as the lives of a majority of the people we serve.” Liberty Vapor offers all styles of vaping products from EGO style, to Esmart, and from Kanger, Smoktech, Innokin, Smokjoy and more. “We also really enjoy electronic and mechanical MODs. If you want to learn how to build a coil (the electronic part for a MOD) or if you just want to chat and vape, we love to share our passion with our customers.” Business hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Currently, kits are being offered at a discounted price, and Liberty provides a rewards program - buy nine juices, get the tenth free. OOfficer Development Program New to RSU Rogers State University and the Oklahoma Army National Guard are partnering to add the GOLD program this fall.
By David Hamby Starting this fall, Rogers State University and the Oklahoma Army National Guard will be offering a Guard Officer Leadership Development (GOLD) program that will build upon the university’s distinguished military history. RSU President Dr. Larry Rice and Major General Myles L. Deering, Adjutant General of Oklahoma, recently signed the agreement during a campus ceremony. The program is expected to begin on the Claremore campus this fall. “For more than 50 years, this school operated at Oklahoma Military Academy and enjoyed a reputation as one of the nation’s premiere military schools,” Rice said. “Through this agreement with the Oklahoma Army National Guard, we are providing opportunities to prepare a new generation of citizen soldiers.” The leadership program is open to
Oklahoma Army National Guard soldiers who attend RSU. Candidates can receive 100 percent of their college tuition paid, live on campus, develop leadership skills and accelerate their military career by being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Oklahoma Army National Guard upon completion of the program. “The National Guard is the face of the Army. Our citizen-soldiers are in your schools, in your churches and throughout your communities,” Deering said. “It is crucial to our mission that we develop future leaders for the Guard because we are an integral part of your hometown and we’re an integral part of today’s Army.” The college curriculum includes academic
leadership training built into the program, along with leadership labs, physical training and field training exercises that provide firsthand experience about leading others as an officer. RSU’s program would be the only such program in northeastern Oklahoma. Several OMA alumni attended the event, and their contributions to the school and its mission were recognized by comments from both Deering and Rice. Bill Ramsay, president of the OMA
Alumni Association, said, “We’ve been wanting something like this to happen for years, and we think it will be a great asset to the university. We thank the university and the Guard for bringing boots back to the ground once again on College Hill.” An endowment to support the GOLD program has been established by the family of one of OMA’s most decorated alumni, Lt. Col. Ed Ramsey, who was instrumental in the liberation of the Japanese-occupied Philippines during World War II. His widow, Dr. Raquel “Raqui” Ramsey, has worked with the OMA Alumni Association to create an endowment that honors her husband through its support of the leadership program. For more information about the program, contact Captain Michael Mitchell, who is serving as the Officer in Charge of the RSU GOLD program.

CChalk It Up to a Fun Weekend of Art Stilt walkers, fire dancers, music by Desi and Cody, and dozens of artists kick up dust Broken Arrow’s Rose District, June 6-7.
By Christopher Davis Hosted by Your Design Art Gallery, the 3rd annual Chalk It Up – An Art Festival is set to take place on June 6 and 7 in Broken Arrow’s Rose District. With the recent rebirth of the Rose District, Main Street offers a fresh canvas for chalk artists to work their magic. Since its beginning several years ago, attendance “has grown by thousands,” says Alisa Inglett, owner of Your Design Art Gallery and event coordinator for Chalk It Up. “The event has grown to two blocks,” she says, referring to how artists spread out in the streets to create awe-inspiring chalk images. With over 40 artists competing for prizes and bragging rights, Inglett says every year brings a surprise creation. “You never know how a piece will turn out,” she says. “I’m always most impressed with the younger artists.” Inglett, who oversees the artist submission process as well, explains how some proposals may seem underwhelming on paper, early on. However, over the years, she has learned to withhold judgment, as some of the best pieces “pop” once they make their way to the chalk-on-asphalt medium. “The three-dimensional pieces are always fun,” Inglett says. “I enjoy seeing the variety in
the artistic styles.” Inglett also enjoys seeing the change in vibe between Friday and Saturday at the event. “Friday night is fun because all the artists get to know each other,” she says, noting that the artists have a tendency to ogle one another’s work and voice mutual appreciation. The camaraderie amongst the artists eventually gives way to a more competitive atmosphere as the artists near their deadline. “Saturday is definitely more intense,” laughs Inglett. Artists begin working their respective 10’ by 10’ sections of street at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 6, and continue working on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., when judges will select winners in a handful of categories. First, second and third place will be selected in various age groups in categories like animation, 3-D, masters, artist’s choice, original art and none of the above. The winner of Best in Show will see their image used on T-shirts for next year’s event. But artists will not be the only ones busy at Chalk It Up. There will plenty of activities and entertainment for attendees. There will be lots of vendors out on Main Street, peddling wares and providing food. On Friday, look for performance artists

On Saturday, live music from Desi and Cody is sure to put everyone in a festive mood. Chalk It Up is made possible by a collaborative partnership with the City of Broken Arrow, the Broken Arrow Parks Department, the Arts and Humanities Council and Your Design Art Gallery. Sponsors include Blue Bell Ice Cream, QuikTrip (provid-
ing sandwiches for contestants) and Wal-Mart (which supplies all the chalk for the event.) In addition, they help navigate through services offered by DHS, which still include financial reimbursement for foster families, and clothing allowances and Sooner Care insurance for the foster children. From the very beginning with TFI Family Connections, foster parents are never alone in their efforts to foster children – TFI not only helps them “feather the nest” by
offering step-by-step training resources (including online classes), but helps maintain the connecting threads of that nest as well. According to Cecil and Becker, this strong foundation for successful foster parenting is already in place. The great need is for those who are willing to build on that foundation by becoming foster parents. Both men are willing to come and speak to individuals or groups about the process and want to answer any questions and calm any fears that potential foster par-

Rogers County Youth Services director and co-event coordinator. “This tournament is wonderful because you are supporting two youth specific groups in one tournament,” adds Bret McGuire of the Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation, an event coordinator for Steaks & Sticks. Steve, Bret and other group coordinators, including Sean Cox of Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and RCYS Board Member; Delayna Trease, volunteer; Herb McSpadden, volunteer; and Dave Bethea and Carolyn Swopes of RCYS, are all excited about continuing this event into the next decade, as they feel a golf tournament fits in with the both organizations’ philosophies of encouraging outdoor activity amongst youngsters. “The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation’s mission is to purchase and provide any equipment that helps with athletic conditioning and injury prevention training, and we also help by offering educational programs for coaches and staff,” says Sean Cox. “This golf tournament is a great vehicle for the community and Rogers County to support two totally youth oriented programs and have fun at the same time.” Cox also notes that
Steaks & Sticks is one of the most attended golf tournaments at Heritage Hills, normally hosting more than one hundred individuals. “The tournament grows each year, and we look forward to seeing the same people that participate each year, as well as the excitement of seeing new participants getting involved,” says Carolyn Swopes. Delayna Trease agrees, adding, “The community is so receptive to this fun golf tournament. The tradition of the Steaks & Sticks Golf Tournament is something I am fortunate to be a part of.” All teams begin play at the shot gun start event at 8:30 a.m. Afternoon tee times begin at 1 p.m. Golfers will gather during lunch to watch a live broadcast of “The Sports Animal” with Al Jerkins and Pat Jones, who are, as Bret McGuire says, “always entertaining” and Dave Bethea calls, “one of the most listened to sports talk shows in the state of Oklahoma.” Golfers will also have the chance to win prizes in a drawing based on the amount of mulligans purchased. Past prizes have included lawnmowers, weed eaters, golf bags and clubs, and even a round of golf for four at Patricia Island.
“We are so grateful to the community and this region for their support of Rogers County,” says Steve Blahut of RCYS, which is a private, non-profit United Way agency and part of a network of 43 youth services and agencies across the state of Oklahoma since 1976. “The support received for this event is an example of the heart people have toward our youth.”
garnered the type of experience that has prepared him for the office he is now seeking. “I have been the voice in the courtroom that helped put murderers, rapists, drug dealers and child molesters behind bars, and I have not lost a night of sleep questioning my judgment in doing so,” said Ballard. “I have spent long nights praying with families while awaiting a jury verdict, and I have known the satisfaction of being able to assure them that those who had done evil would never be free to do more harm. families of this district.” Ballard regards protection of this district a personal priority as well as a professional one. He grew up in Rogers County and makes his home in Claremore with his wife of 11 years, Traci, and their three children, Kizer, Keaton, and Matthijs. He feels that protecting the county involves more than just fighting crime through the courts – a district attorney must provide the type of leadership that will build and maintain strong relationships between the different offices of law enforcement. “I am committed to building bridges between the dis-

trict attorney’s office, law enforcement, and the community. We all have to stand shoulder to shoulder to fight crime and present a united front,” said Ballard, who explains that when relations are bad between these agencies, crime from other areas will infiltrate the community. “Criminals will figure out the weakness in the justice system and exploit it,” he states. If Ballard is elected, he looks forward to building relationships with district police and sheriff’s departments and working together with them to fight crime in the community. “The district attorney is the
chief law enforcement officer of the district, so it is an office in which leadership matters a great deal,” said Ballard. “It is critical for our district attorney to be focused on the business of public safety and justice. I believe I can bring to this office the kind of steady leadership and integrity our communities deserve, and I hope the voters will give me a chance to serve.” For more information, contact

voters will decide on “Liquor By the Drink Sales on Sunday, Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.” In the state of Oklahoma,
(L to R): Tanya Andrews, executive director, Visit Claremore; Dwayne Caldwell; Rick Hatley, general manager, Buffalo Wild Wings.

there are only 18 counties that do not allow alcoholic beverages to be sold on Sundays; a few of those counties are in northeast Oklahoma, such as Rogers, Mayes and Craig counties. “Claremore and Rogers County suffer when there is leakage of food and beverage sales (cocktails, wine, and strong beer),” said Tanya Andrews, executive director of the Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our board of directors voted to support this measure as it relates to our hospitality partners, current and future. We believe that removing barriers such as the current no liquor by the drink sales on Sundays will assist in recruiting new restaurants while increasing business for our existing partners. Three new hotels are coming, along with a new convention center. We are excited to see the growth and opportunity and want to see it continue.” According to a recent market research study by Nielsen Claritas, the city of Claremore loses an estimated $11,910,000 annually, to restaurants, drinking establishments and the purchasing of alcoholic beverages outside of Rogers County. That is more than $350,000 in sales taxes for the city of Claremore, and more than $218,300 in county sales taxes, that we contribute to surrounding counties: local dollars being spent to pave roads, and hire more police and fire personnel elsewhere. This is not a moral issue, but one of choice, growth and opportunity. Residents have voiced
Page 29
their desire for years, the want for new restaurants like Olive Garden or a steak house such as Lonestar Steakhouse, just to name a few. However, this law prohibits our restaurant partners, current or future, from being successful. By working with city and county leaders to remove barriers such as this, we better position ourselves in a competitive marketplace. Major chain restaurants depend on revenue from the sales of their bar service; some even report 45 percent of revenues are made from the sale of cocktails. Not being able to forecast positive growth for a new restaurant might give owners and decision makers enough reason not come to Rogers County. Voters have a decision to make. First, the Rogers County Citizens for Growth encourages all eligible voters to vote. Second, please consider the following regarding the “Liquor By the Drink Sales on Sunday” measure: this is about consumer’s choice, business growth, and future opportunities! For more information regarding Rogers County Resolution 2014-96, Liquor by the Drink Sales on Sunday, call Rogers County Citizens for Growth at 918-284-5186 or the Claremore Convention & Visitors Bureau at 918-341-8688. BBruce Springsteen: A
Photographic Journey The GRAMMY Museum and The Woody Guthrie Center present the exhibition capturing a behind-the-scenes look into the artistry of Bruce Springsteen.
By Todd Cunningham Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey, a traveling photography exhibition curated by the GRAMMY Museum Los Angeles, made its debut in Tulsa at The Woody Guthrie Center in late April. The exhibition features 45 iconic images of Bruce Springsteen. On display until spring of 2015, the exhibit serves to document a great American music legend, and features photos taken by noted Springsteen photographers Danny Clinch, Ed Gallucci, Eric Meola, Pamela Springsteen and Frank Stefanko. “Our goal with this exhibition is to define the career of Bruce Springsteen in an entirely new light, as captured by these five incredible photographers,” said GRAMMY Museum executive director Bob Santelli. “Each of these photographers was able to artfully document Bruce’s world, at different stages in his career. We are honored to partner with each of them in order to help tell the story of one of the most important figures in American music.” Bruce Springsteen’s recording
career spans more than 40 years, beginning with 1973’s Columbia Records release Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ. He has released 18 studio albums, garnered 20 GRAMMY Awards, won an
Oscar, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was a 2009 recipient of Kennedy Center Honors and was named 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year by The Recording Academy.
www.ValueNews.com Springsteen’s newest album High Hopes (Columbia) was released on January 14, 2014. While the majority of the exhibit focuses on Springsteen off-stage, four additional live performance photographs, shot by Barry Schneier, are showcased. These photos were shot during the now famous Springsteen concert at Harvard Square Theater where famed Rolling Stone music journalist Jon Landau claimed, “I have seen the future of rock and roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Additionally, the exhibit features video interviews with each of the photographers, produced
by The GRAMMY Museum. The debut of the exhibit coincided with the one-year anniversary of the opening of the Woody Guthrie Center. “We are thrilled to be kicking off our anniversary celebrations with this incredible exhibit featuring photographs spanning the career of Bruce Springsteen. He is an excellent example of an artist who continues the legacy of Woody Guthrie. The opening of this newly curated exhibit at the Woody Guthrie Center is a perfect fit,” said Deana McCloud, executive director. The Woody Guthrie Center features state-of-the-art exhibits, an extensive outreach and education program, and a concert series to bring his legacy to Tulsans and those who make the pilgrimage to what is a destination for Woody Guthrie fans worldwide. The Center is more than a museum; instead, it is a center of investigation for inspiration. By providing examples of Woody’s ability to use his creativity as a way of expressing the world around him, we hope to encourage others to find their voices and, through their educational programs, explore the power that lies within the creative process.

JJason Carini Runs for
Rogers County Treasurer The Catoosa resident and small business owner wants to restore integrity and ethical behavior to the Rogers County Treasurer’s office.
By Sheryl Sowell
Local business owner and longtime Rogers County resident Jason Carini has announced his candidacy for Rogers County Treasurer. Carini said he is running because he believes there needs to be a dramatic change in the office. “The Oklahoma State Auditor’s 2011 and 2012 reports found the Rogers County Treasurer’s office with inadequate segregation of duties, no procedures to ensure daily bank deposits were safe, and that her office has been using county property for personal use. The incumbent has held the office for 23 years and, apparently, she hasn’t learned the job. It is time taxpayers elect a new County Treasurer,” Carini said. “I am running to establish lawful and proper accounting practices, clear procedures and controls to safeguard public money and maintain accuracy,
transparency and accountability. This is not a silly game for personal pleasure. The operation of the Treasurer’s office is critical to the success of Rogers County. It’s the people’s money and it is time for a treasurer that understands the duty, honor and responsibility of the office,” Carini said. “I have operated a business debt free for the past five years – a demanding task requiring careful money management. It is clear from the Auditor’s report that Rogers County needs a competent manager with real business experience. Carini continued, “The Auditor’s report explained clearly that purchasing ‘equipment for personal use is an abuse of County funds,’ but if the County Treasurer doesn’t know that after having worked for 13 years as an employee then elected for 23 years, then
when will she ever learn? We can’t afford to give her another four years of on-the-job training.” Carini was home educated through high school and graduated in 2006 from Pat-
rick Henry College in Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Public Policy. In 2009, he co-founded Green Country Mowing, which employs six people, and operates debt free. Jason and his wife, Jessica, live

in Catoosa and have two children. He also teaches a weekly bible study. “The County Treasurer is responsible for hard-earned money from the people of Rogers County to take care of roads, bridges, law enforcement and other basic needs. I believe every penny counts. I will apply honest, lawful and proven successful management principles to the Treasurer’s office daily.” “Being the County Treasurer is a full-time job, and for too long the incumbent has treated it like a hobby,” Carini said. “The 2011 and 2012 Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector’s audits of Rogers County shows the Rogers County Treasurer is unqualified. That is not an insult, but a fact of ‘repeat findings,’ according to the report. That is the reason I ask for the support of every honest taxpayer in Rogers County. Let’s clean this mess up,” Carini added. For more information visit online at www.JasonCarini. com.

STOP THE SNORING!
Snoring is more than a nuisance - it can harm both your health and your relationships! It's not only loud and disruptive it wakes both you and your partner. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, a serious and even life threatening disorder. Sleep apnea causes a drop in blood oxygen levels, which places stress on your heart and raises blood pressure. Sleep apnea also keeps both of you from properly entering REM sleep, the most restorative stage of nightly sleep.
