By Carol Beck-Round If you’ve ever experienced back pain, you know it can be debilitating, often leading to missed work or forgoing your favorite activities. It is one of the number one reasons for job absenteeism, and one of the most common health complaints in the United States today. In fact, 8 out of 10 people will have back pain in their lifetime and seek a doctor, according to Dr. Steven Hardage with Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center in Claremore. “Most suffering from back pain fear surgery,” says Dr. Hardage, “but in reality, most don’t need surgery for back pain.” (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

INFIDELITY: LOVE, SEX, & MONEY BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Having been a therapist for many years, one of the most devastating issues when working with couples is infidelity. There are many forms of infidelity. Let’s review three of them. Most often what comes to mind is a sexual affair. A sexual affair is when a person engages in sexual activity with someone other than their spouse. This could be anything from sexual intercourse, to kissing, to making out. Also included in this category are online affairs through chat rooms, dating and pornography sites. A lesser known type of affair is what is called an emotional affair. Emotional infidelity is defined when one partner goes outside the primary relationship to get his or her emotional needs met — and it is more common and more damaging than you might imagine. If you are talking about problems that are happening in your marriage or with your spouse with someone else of the opposite sex, if you find yourself taking extra time getting ready in the morning to impress a certain coworker, if you are texting excessively with someone who isn’t

your partner, if you are hiding emails from your spouse, you may already be having an emotional affair. Finally, there is Financial Infidelity. Financial Infidelity is the secretive act of spending money, possessing credit and credit cards, holding secret accounts or stashes of money, borrowing money, or otherwise incurring debt unknown to one’s spouse. MSN Money reported on a study in 2008 that showed 50% of respondents had committed some form of financial infidelity. At least two or three times a year, I have new prospective clients come in to visit with me that are struggling with financial infidelity. It most often finally comes to roost because of the accumulated debt and creditor issues. The following are some signs of financial infidelity and ways to go about uncovering dishonest financial behavior. Review Documents. Review tax returns, bank account statements, credit card statements, and investment statements regularly. Look at the inflows, outflows, and where the money goes. When

money has been hidden, the biggest sign is a real disconnect between income reported and the money available to pay the bills. Look for transfers between accounts that you were not aware of. If you see this, try to get info on why the money was transferred to another account and where this account is. Changes in behavior. Watch for changes in your spouse’s behavior. You know what you consider normal behavior in your spouse. If they start acting differently, it may be cause for suspicion. Excessive secrecy, changes in money flow, unexplained gaps between income and expenditures all could be cause for concern. Changes to accounts. If addresses are changed and statements go to another address, that is a red flag. Bank accounts in a family member’s name should raise questions. Bank statements showing regular wire transfers or checks to a random person should also be a concern. Review all signed legal agreements. Read and review all tax returns. Make sure you

understand everything that you have signed in the past and are signing. In order to prevent financial infidelity, both partners need to be involved in the finances. The way people get taken advantage of, no matter what the relationship, is when they turn a blind eye. You need to be able to trust your spouse while at the same time

know what is going on. Stay faithful, my friends. For more information visit www.waterstonewealth.com. Melanie Hasty-Grant, Experienced Licensed Professional Counselor and Managing Principal at Waterstone Private Wealth Management. Securities offered through LPL Financial, Member FINRA/SIPC.

HHere’s the Thing about Trusts Trusts aren't strictly for the wealthy. By Terry Parsons

There’s a long-held perception that Trusts are strictly for the wealthy and sophisticated. And, the names of some Trusts (Domestic Self-Settled Spendthrift Trusts, Qualified Terminable Interest Property Trusts, Intentionally Defective Irrevocable Trusts, etc.) can make most of us want to cringe and run for cover. Largely due to misunderstanding and misperception, the subject has become so intimidating that many people avoid it. And that’s a shame, because Trusts really can be pretty simple and very effective. Let’s go over the basics: What is a Trust? A Trust is simply a legal arrangement that holds assets for the benefit of another. There are three parties to a Trust arrangement: The grantor: the person(s) who creates and funds the Trust.

The beneficiary: the person(s) who receives the benefits from the Trust (such as the income or the right to use the home, etc.). The trustee: The person(s) or entity who controls the Trust property, administers the Trust and has an absolute fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of the beneficiary. Why should you consider a Trust? For starters, a Trust can potentially… •minimize estate taxes, •shield assets from potential creditors, •avoid the expense and delays of probate, •preserve, protect and grow assets for your (minor) children until they are grown, •create a pool of investments that can be managed by professional money managers, •set up a fund for you should you become sick or disabled,

•shift part of your tax burden to people in lower tax brackets, •provide benefits for charity. What’s the other side of the coin? Here are a couple of things to consider: •There can be costs associated with setting up and maintaining a Trust (legal fees, trustee fees, etc.). •Depending on the type of Trust you choose, you may give up some control over the assets in the Trust. (This can be the case with many Irrevocable Trusts.) It sounds like a Trust pretty much covers everything, so is there even a need for a will? Personally, I recommend it, if for no other reason than most people neglect to transfer some or all of their property into their Trust. A properly constructed will, if nothing else, can pour over into the Trust at the time of your death any forgotten assets or

assets you obtained after the Trust was created. What to do next? Get with a professional! This isn’t a job for amateurs. Every situation is different. Tax laws – which can affect different types of Trusts in interesting ways – change on a regular basis. You want to make sure your advisors are totally up-to-speed on the regulations and that your situation is customized specifically to your needs.

AAge 83 and Ready to Run Again Summit Physical Therapy helps active patient with pain so he can enjoy life again.

By Carol Beck-Round

At 83, Bill Salwaechter is enjoying life again. Thanks to Summit Physical Therapy, Salwaechter has plans to do

the 2014 Tulsa Run, a 15K or 9.3 miles. “I don’t just run it,” he says, “I do it to have a good time. I make it an

event.” While the 83-year-old has always been active – and has participated in the Tulsa Run before – the last time he ran was at the age of 70. In July 2012, he had replacement surgery on his left knee. “I set a goal in 2013 to do the Tulsa Run,” he says. “My surgery had gone perfectly and I started light training.” However, about five weeks into his training, Salwaechter began feeling a perpetual discomfort in his right thigh. “It was like a cramp or a Charlie horse,” he adds. “I can stand a little discomfort but this hurt. It took me out of the training process.” While he still had some discomfort, he didn’t make an appointment to see his primary care physician until after he tripped and fell while descending a couple of steps at a restaurant. “The pain became so significant,” he says, “that I couldn’t sleep.” With leg cramps and weakness in both legs, Salwaechter couldn’t sit very long and had to avoid stairs. “My social life was also affected,” he adds. “I don’t miss a Claremore High School girls’ basketball game and I love other sporting events, but the

pain was disrupting that.” After Salwaechter’s doctor X-rayed his back, he suggested physical therapy. "I told him I wanted to go to Summit. I trust the therapists and staff." Cathey Bowling, DPT at Summit, began working with Salwaechter in October of last year. Although his insurance company approved him for 12 sessions, he only needed eight before he was back to his active lifestyle, attending Zebra basketball games, dancing with his daughter at Cain’s Ballroom and preparing for the upcoming Tulsa Run. “When I started working with Bill, his pain level was rated 7 on a scale of 10,” says Bowling. “By the time we were finished, his pain was zero.” Bowling and PTA Chris Whisenhunt used an individualized plan – as they do with all patients – to help Salwaechter decrease his pain and improve his strength. “We took a manual approach including stretching as well as other hands-on techniques,” says Bowling. “We also got him started on an exercise program and he continued progressing.” Bowling credits

Salwaechter’s success to his hard work and consistency with the program. “He didn’t miss an appointment and he followed my recommendations by doing his exercises at home. Because of that I was able to progress his exercises appropriately in conjunction with his manual therapy treatments here at Summit.” After only three visits to Summit, Salwaechter felt much better. “Although I could feel improvement after the first session, by the eighth session I was 100 percent pain free. I would highly recommend Summit Physical Therapy to anyone,” he adds. “I have total confidence in the therapists and staff, and I always looked forward to every visit. I love the people here.” Salwaechter loves life, loves people. “Now thanks to Summit, I enjoy it more than I did six months ago.” For more information, contact

CCanoe Brook Staff Truly Cares Families can rest assured that their loved ones will be cared for – and cared about – at Catoosa-based Assisted Living.

By Deanna Rebro

“You can feel the difference when you walk in,” says Jim Colbert, executive director, Canoe Brook Assisted Living Community. The feeling is what it’s all about. There is joy among the residents and staff members, expressed through their smiles and warm greetings to those known and unknown. The spirit beyond the doors says, “Welcome” to everyone. “Our residents are number one,” says Jim, “always.” But it’s the unique and dedicated Canoe Brook staff that makes the residents their top priority – something that is

obvious even on a first impression. These people have answered a calling, Jim explains. They work from their hearts. They honor and respect senior citizens and love working with them. So much so, that quite often Jim hears comments like, “I love what I do, and I even get paid for it. I am blessed!” While food is the often biggest complaint within most assisted living centers, Canoe Brook offers meals that some families claim are better than 5-star restaurants. Dietary Manager, Glenda Aery, plans three meals a day to meet

both nutritional needs and personal tastes. Glenda makes 99 percent of her meals from scratch, including desserts. Her famous homemade pies have earned her the title, “the pie doctor.” Last summer, residents in the 38 assisted living apartments and 34 memory care apartments grew tomatoes and green peppers that were included in special salads. Life Enrichment Coordinator, Crystal Guest, comes up with ideas to keep the residents as active as they want to be. Sometimes entertainment comes to Canoe

Brook. Sometimes the residents entertain, with singalongs and piano numbers. There are Bingo nights, arts and crafts activities, and weekly outings for lunch or shopping. Seven common areas provide social opportunities in relaxed and comfortable home-like settings so residents can have something to do day or night. Speaking of the recent holidays brought a smile to everyone’s face as they recalled Santa’s surprise visit for an old-fashioned Christmas celebration. The inner child of each resident was at the party with all the excitement and expectations of Christmases gone by. The serious side of Canoe Brook, which opened in 2009, includes the direct care staff that treats each resident as their own family member. A registered nurse is on staff and an LPN is available on every shift. State-of-the art equipment keeps memoryimpaired residents safe and secure. A keypad entry and exit system is used for both the electronic gates that surround the building and the interior common areas. In addition, each resident wears a Wonder Guard monitoring bracelet to prevent wandering

for even the shortest time. Marketing Director, Anthony Fleming, says there is always someone to lend an ear, no matter when it is needed. That may be just a kind word spoken at the right moment or a special prayer for a special need. The Canoe Brook staff is there to serve because helping senior citizens is what they really want to do. Anthony would be happy to schedule a tour for anyone who has a loved one who can no longer live independently at home, but does not need 24-hour complex medical supervision. Assisted living apartments with a private key entry are available in three sizes. Each apartment includes numerous amenities that are considered upgrades at most other facilities.

Don’t Let Gaps in Your Coverage Hurt Your Business Claremore’s RCI Insurance Group helps commercial owners find the best coverage at the best price.

By Carol Beck-Round

As a business owner, do you know the details of your current insurance coverage? According to RCI Insurance agent Kyle Beggs, approximately 90 percent of business owners don’t know what their policies cover. “They

have gaps in their insurance and are shocked when they discover things that are not included in their current policy,” says Beggs. That’s where RCI Insurance and Beggs can assist the business owner. “I

feel we are a step above other companies, both for personal and commercial insurance. Since we quote and write policies with multiple companies, our goal is to find the best rates and coverage for our clients.” Beggs enjoys helping his clients. “I love the challenge of the commercial side of the business. It is more complicated but very rewarding at the same time.” Beggs, who has been an agent for six years, is beginning his third year with RCI. “Because we are an independent insurance agency,” he adds, “we work for the customers – not the companies. That’s one of the advantages of our company.” “Options are important, whether it is for commercial auto, commercial property, worker’s compensation or general liability,” he says. “We are a one-stop shop because we offer everything a business owner needs, including umbrella plans, key person life insurance and disabil-

ity insurance.” An umbrella policy is additional insurance to cover any claims exceeding the limits of a business owner’s basic insurance. “Since we have over 20 companies from which we can choose for our commercial clients," he says, “we can get the best coverage for the best price.” RCI’s agents work three months in advance, reviewing every policy as it comes up for renewal. “If we notice a large premium increase, we try to find a company with a better rate,” he adds. “We also cover many of the larger businesses in town.” “Recently,” says Beggs, “we were able to give a manufacturing business in the Industrial Park three similar quotes. They chose the one in the middle because they felt comfortable with the company. It is a huge advantage to give your clients options.” Free insurance reviews are also available. “You can call for an appointment, walk in, email me at KBeggs@rciinsurance.com, or go to our website at www.rci-ins.com, and fill out an application to get a quote,” Beggs adds. RCI Insurance wants their customers to be happy. If a client is unhappy with rates, RCI can shop around but their goal is to offer quality coverage at competitive rates. Giving back to the com-

munity is another goal the insurance agency pursues with a passion. Beggs serves on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, Claremore School Foundation, RSU Alumni and is a member of the Rotary Club. RCI is involved in many fundraisers and supports community organizations and charities including Safenet Services, Blue Star Mothers, CASA, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and John 3:16 Mission. You can go to their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/RCIinsurance where you can “like” their page and help support worthy causes. “The more likes and shares we get, the more we donate,” says Amber Helmuth, personal risk manager. “We post our community events and involvement on our page, where we also run contests periodically.” In the past, RCI has given away trips to the Tulsa Zoo and gift cards on their Facebook page. The business not only makes a difference in the lives of their clients but in the world as well. For more information, contact

DDon’t Give Up Yet Fitness Time for Ladies offers variety for women to get fit and healthy in upscale facility.

By Carol Beck-Round

Rhonda Conger (seated) and Natalie McIninch, are available to help women get fit at Fitness Time for Ladies.

Although many make New Year’s resolutions to get healthy and fit each January, by the time February rolls around most have given up. With numerous workout options available, Fitness Time for Ladies offers a 5,000-square-foot gym catering to women only. What sets Fitness Time for Ladies apart from the other gyms in the Claremore area? Besides being for women only, the atmosphere is personal, private, clean and aesthetically pleasing. Fitness Time is also an all-inclusive gym, which means that there are no extra charges for fitness classes or tanning. To accommodate the growing number of women who prefer an all-female gym, owner Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka relocated the facility last year to include a much larger aerobic room to meet the increased demand for Zumba fitness classes, step and regular aerobics, yoga and kickboxing. “Due to demand, we also now have two yoga instructors, three Zumba instructors and have added a noon Zumba class,” says Dr.

www.ValueNews.com Hrdlicka. In addition, two new classes are now offered, including a Turbo Kick class and a PIYO class – a combination Yoga and Pilates class. “Many gyms charge extra for their classes,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not. When you pay your monthly fee, you have full use of our facility, including tanning. You get the whole gym for the price of a tanning membership.” As a safety precaution, the facility has also added an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). “At a workout facility, I think the addition of the AED is a necessity,” he adds. “Our mission is to assist people in their pursuit of health and fitness,” Hrdlicka says. “We are dedicated to providing our customers with current and pertinent information on fitness and nutrition. Our uniquely designed programs are catered towards the individual, with our commitment to the highest standards of personal service.” Fitness Time offers four tanning beds, two showers and includes audio and video surveillance equipment throughout the building. “We also have a child care room available for mothers and a security system so that they can view their children on the closed circuit TVs while working out,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not, however, offer child care.” The upscale 24/7

women’s fitness center offers a full line of aerobic exercise equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair steppers and elliptical machines, all outfitted with televisions. Nautilus strength training equipment as well as free weights help club members get in tip-top shape. Additionally, members can take advantage of personal training, nutritional counseling, Infra-red Sauna, full-amenity locker rooms, a luxury shower room and a massage chair. “We are also looking into expanding our facility later this year,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We want to add a larger Zumba room and a spinning class.” Plans are also being made to add a Hydro massage, to increase the size of the locker room and add more showers. “We want to make it into a relaxation zone by adding the extra amenities,” he adds. “We are very particular about staying clean and keeping this place a personal, private atmosphere for our ladies,” he adds. “We want the gym to feel like it is an extension of their home.”

GGet a Descent Education The genealogy volunteers at Will Rogers Library are available to help patrons research their family histories.

By Jan O’Brien

The genealogy volunteers at the Will Rogers Library in Claremore began their 2014 schedule on January 27. They meet on Mondays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., except on days when the library is closed for

holiday. This service is free to the public and offered by a group of volunteers to assist beginners or advanced researchers in their quest for their heritage. Often, a researcher wan-

This can be done at home or while at the library, but it is the key for the volunteers to assist the patron. Once the forms are completed, it is much easier to find information at a quick glance and progress is much faster. The packet has additional information on other web sites to search. The library has two subscription sites that patrons may access through the library, Ancestry.com and Fold 3. There are other websites that are free and some that you can access from your home with an Internet connection and your library card. The purpose is to teach researchers how to do their own research. It is in finding that lost ancestor, or learning of their life in history, that the individual finds excitement and satisfaction in the search. “We teach a new way of looking at material simply by doing an analysis and assessment, then knowing what is available in books or on the Internet to get the

researcher closer to their goals,” said Glenda Hensen, genealogy volunteer. Two computers are dedicated to genealogy on Monday nights; however, you may access this area any time the library is open, not just on Monday nights. Laptop computers are also available for use in the library with Legacy Software to begin to enter data in a software program. The volunteers can help you begin. When you are through for the session, you will need to save your data to a flash drive that you bring with you. The laptops also have access to Ancestry.com for searching, as well as other free sites on the Internet. In addition to the computer, there are a number of books in the genealogy section on Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Mayflower Society, Cherokee Heritage, and many how-to books on searching genealogy regions for helpful societies and further research. Three of the volunteers specialize in Native American genealogy. The public is invited to a Beginning Genealogy Seminar on February 8 at 10 a.m. at the library.

Earns FFerris Recognition as Expert in Payments Industry RCB Bank ACH Analyst Kathleen Ferris earns AAP certification. By Jocelyn Wood

RCB Bank is proud to announce Kathleen Ferris, RCB Bank ACH Analyst, received her Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) certification and joined an elite group of highly skilled professionals across the nation that represents excellence in the electronic payments industry. AAP certification, provided through NACHA, The Electronic Payments Association, is a highly respected honor granted only to professionals who can prove a deep understanding of the rules and products of ACH operations. Currently, there are only around 4,000 AAPs in the nation. “I am extremely proud of Kathleen and her accomplishment of becoming a certified AAP,” said Daniel Marlin, RCB Bank VP of Operations and Ferris’ immediate supervisor. “She worked extremely

hard and her efforts have helped her to be successful.” Ferris currently monitors RCB Bank’s electronic money transfers and ACH activity (direct deposits and payments) to help protect the bank and its customers from fraudulent activity. RCB Bank is excited to have an AAP certified professional on staff with an extensive expertise in ACH operations who can help reduce risk for the company and its customers and ensure compliance with federal regulations. “It is a privilege to be a part of this small group of experts,” said Ferris. “I feel a great sense of responsibility. Because of the AAP, my coworkers come to me for the correct answers and I take that responsibility very seriously.” ACH, or the Automated Clearing House Network,

connects the nation’s financial institutions and processed 21 billion transactions in 2012. ACH processing drastically speeds up check processing by electronically processing checks and payments in batches instead of having to individually and physically handle each and every check or transaction. The ACH Network provides a safe, secure and reliable network for direct account-toaccount consumer, business and government payments and is considered the backbone for the electronic movement of money and data. NACHA, the Electronic Payments Association, manages the development, administration and governance of the ACH Network. NACHA represents more than 10,000 financial institutions. RCB Bank is a community bank with 33 locations

IImpress Your Sweetheart Shop for your Valentine and find a flirtatious date ensemble at one of downtown Claremore’s finest boutiques.

By Cassie Woods

The District on Main in Claremore is gearing up for the Valentine’s Day with several specials, great gift ideas and perfect date-night outfits. The trendy boutique in downtown Claremore offers everything from home décor to clothes and shoes to purses and jewelry. Additionally, owners Susan Todd and Cari Bohannan just returned from

market with new ideas and inventory sure to fit anyone’s style and budget. “We are really excited about the new spring items we are receiving from our existing lines, as well as picking up some new brands,” said Bohannan. “We are confident our customers will be pleased with the growing selection they will find in the

store.” One of those new brands that will be coming soon to the inventory of The District on Main is the Southern Fashion House clothing line recently announced by Missy Robertson, wife of Duck Dynasty’s Jase Robertson. Robertson describes this line as a great option “for busy, working moms who want to look put together without having to put a lot of effort into it while staying modest and age-appropriate.” The new line mixes vibrant colors and patterns with slightly longer hemlines, varying sleeve options and shapes resulting in contemporary fashion reflective of the fun new styles found in the junior section of department stores, but with silhouettes intended to flatter women of all ages, shapes and sizes. An expansion of the Tribal, Ivy Jane and Brighton lines also offers limitless gift potential. Tribal offers great wardrobe options featuring superior design and quality. The unique Ivy Jane clothing line is a mix of bright and colorful, quirky and fun, or romantic and classic. The Brighton line includes charms and beads, earrings and watches, purses and bags,

and now shoes as well. Todd and Bohannan promise to have lots of dresses in stock for that perfect date-night outfit. “Last year around this time, we had a lot of ladies coming in looking for dresses to wear on their Valentine’s dates,” said Todd. “We ordered a lot of new styles and colors in to make sure we have plenty of options in the store to meet this year’s needs.” In addition to their popular clothing lines, The District on Main has a terrific assortment of accessories, gift items and home décor. Other featured brands include Fossil, Miss Me, Lane Boots, Mud Pie, Grazie Footwear, Harley & Maudes and many more. “Now is also a great time to start thinking of those spring projects you’d like to complete,” said Todd. “We still carry the Maison Blanche Paints for those interested in refurbishing furniture.” As the boutique has expanded the accessory items and clothing lines it carries, and recently undergone a name change, it has also had to complete some remodeling to accommodate the new needs. Some of the most

recent changes include new shelving near the front of the store and an expansion of the dressing rooms in the back. “We have been very blessed with a growing boutique,” said Bohannan. “We believe it is our level of customer service that sets us apart and keeps people coming back. We truly hope each customer has an opportunity to feel better about themselves by coming through our door.” The District on Main each weekday at 10 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays it closes at 5:30 p.m., but Thursdays the boutique stays open late to serve customers until 7 p.m. It is also open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. For information on items available in the store or current sales and specials, search Facebook for The District on Main. VValentine’s Day Headquarters From traditional to unique, Surceé carries a big variety of gifts for your loved ones.

By Sheryl Sowell

Surceé Gifts & Home has everything you need to show the special people in your life how much you care this Valentine’s Day, with gifts starting at only $5 for your sweetheart, teachers, family

and friends. Owner Laura Sanders says if you want to go the traditional route with giftgiving, her store offers plenty of candy and jewelry. Valentine Crunch

is delicious caramel corn drizzled in chocolate, certain to be a highly appreciated treat. The Waxing Poetic line is sentimental jewelry with a vintage touch. “Waxing Poetic items are so personal, no one ever walks out with the same thing twice. They allow you to tell your journey,” says Laura. As the exclusive Brighton dealer in the Owasso area, Surceé carries their ever-popular charm bar as well as handbags and other jewelry pieces. For those looking for something a little different to give your Valentine, Laura suggests a beautiful piece of home décor from Surceé’s large selection of furniture, mirrors, art pieces, candles,

furnishings and more. “Also, one of our most popular items that ladies love to receive are the beautiful, comfortable Bamboo pajamas and robes.” Surceé employee Kristin Lamont designs handmade vintage cards that will make all your friends and family feel special this Valentine’s Day. If you simply can’t decide on an item, gift certificates always make a great gift, and Surceé offers customers a Wish List option so that there’s no guesswork for loved ones. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 5. Find them on Facebook under Surcee Gifts.

CCasting Smiles on Patients’ Faces Dr. Bradley Lawson, Central States Orthopedics, is committed to serving the local community’s orthopedic needs.

by Cassie Woods

Central States Orthopedics is dedicated to consistently providing the highest level of professional orthopedic care to patients of all ages. Bradley Lawson, M.D., runs the satellite offices in Owasso and Broken Arrow, where he provides hand, foot and ankle care, total joint care, general orthopedics and sports medicine care. Dr. Lawson can provide non-surgical treatment options such as prescribing medications, physical therapy, injections, splinting, casting, and bracing. Surgical treatment options that he can provide include carpal tunnel surgery, fracture

fixation, arthroscopic surgery, ligament repair and reconstruction, and joint replacement surgeries. The majority of patients he sees on a weekly basis are people who have fractures of the arm, leg, foot, ankle, wrist, elbow, hand, forearm and shoulder. He also sees many patients who may have had a previous injury for which they never received the proper treatment. Dr. Lawson conducts surgeries at Bailey Medical Center (Owasso), St. Francis Hospital South (located at 91st and Highway 169), and Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (located at 81st and Lewis in

Tulsa). Dr. Lawson takes emergency room call at Bailey Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital South, so be sure to ask the hospital for Dr. Lawson to be your orthopedic doctor. In Owasso, the satellite office is conveniently located down the street from the new Sam’s Club, just off the Owasso Expressway next to Urgent Care of Green Country. In Broken Arrow, the satellite office is located on Elm between 91st and 101st at the St. Francis Medical Plaza. “We are pleased to serve the Owasso and Broken Arrow communities,” said Dr. Lawson. “We offer a full range of orthopedic services and resources here, which allows our patients to avoid the hassle and stress of a long drive in traffic to receive comparable care.” Dr. Lawson is board certified in orthopedic surgery and fellowship trained in orthopedic sports medicine. He graduated from Baylor University with bachelor's degrees in both biology and Spanish. After completing his undergraduate work, Dr. Lawson attended the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. After medical school, he enlisted in the mili-

tary, where he spent 16 years on active duty serving in the Air Force, where he treated the men and women of the military and their families. During his time in the military, he completed a five-year surgery residency in orthopedic surgery. After serving as an orthopedic surgeon in the military, Dr. Lawson went on to complete more education in sports medicine. He completed a year-long fellowship in sports medicine in Connecticut and Manhattan (New York City). He trained with Dr. Kevin Plancher, who has over 25 years of orthopedic surgery experience. “Certainly, the amount of training and experience that a surgical doctor has makes for a better physician,” said Dr. Lawson. “For that reason, it is my goal to always be learning and growing to ensure I am providing the best patient care I can.” If his credentials aren’t enough, Dr. Lawson also brings commitment and passion for healing to his patients. “Sometimes patients spend years in pain, not knowing that there are treatment options out there to help them get better,” said Dr. Lawson. “It is a rewarding

experience to help those people get back to their everyday activities pain free.” Additionally, their office employs a bilingual receptionist named Meyling. She answers the phones and helps to translate and assist Spanish speaking patients. Central States Orthopedics in Owasso and Broken Arrow are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central States Orthopedics in Owasso schedules patient appointments on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Their office in Broken Arrow schedules patient appointments on Thursdays. To best serve the community, Dr. Lawson’s office guarantees a new patient can be seen within 48 hours of scheduling the appointment.

HHead-to-Toe Makeover Be your best self with help from Classy Curves and Classy Cuts.

By Carol Beck-Round

Since Tammy Rawlinson joined Classy Curves last year, she has lost a total of 20 inches and boosted her self-esteem with a new toned body. “I feel and look better,” says Rawlinson, who adds that the toning tables at Classy Curves have also helped with breathing problems she experienced because of the extra inches around her middle. Weight loss and getting healthy are the top two New Year’s resolutions made each year. By February, however, many have already given up on their pledges. Debby Bailey and her mother, Clara Rosencutter, co-owners of Classy Curves, have a mission. They not only enjoy helping others feel better, they decided to do something about it after their own successful experiences with the toning tables at California Concepts in the 80s. “We had great results and felt better,” says Bailey, who points to her 14-inch loss in two months. Seven different toning tables each work a different area of the body to help users lose unwanted inches without strenuous workouts, starvation diets or hours of frustration. They even help arthritis sufferers. “The system combines the principles of physi-

AgeLoc Galvanic facial and body products are another option at Classy Curves. Developed by an Italian scientist in 1791, the company has grown worldwide to help people fight cellulite and improve skin firmness. “Most people notice dramatic results in their skin after two or three treatments,” she adds. “You can have the treatments done here or buy the small machine and accompanying skin products for home use.” In addition to Classy Curves, Bailey owns and operates Classy Cuts, located in the same building, where she offers facials, microdermabrasion and makeovers. Bailey has been in the spa business for 21 years and also offers haircuts, hairstyling and coloring. “My coloring products are produced in Holland,” says Bailey. “Keune leaves your hair very shiny and they have a beautiful line of colors. I wanted a product that made color come alive and left your hair looking better after it was colored than before. This product does that.” Classy Cuts also carries the Kevin Murphy line of hair care products that are sulphate-free, paraben-free and animal cruelty-free. "The line offers a lot of beautiful colors

cal and isometric movements without strain or fatigue,” says Bailey. “They are also a relaxing, enjoyable and convenient method of toning and inch loss.” In addition to the toning tables, Classy Curves offers even more options. The VibaBody Slimmer tones and firms, increases muscle mass, improves flexibility, range of motion, balance and mobility, and fights cellulite, among other benefits. With high user rankings on Amazon.com, the VibaBody Slimmer has also been featured on “The Doctors” and “The Dr. Oz Show.” Recently, the business added another exercise area featuring the Total Gym, advertised by Chuck Norris, an Inversion Table and a Gazelle Glider, as advertised by Tony Little. “You can pay to use one or all of the products we offer. You can mix and match,” says Bailey. “There are no contracts, no sign-up fees and you can pay month-to-month.” In keeping with their focus on fitness and health, the business also offers nutritional products by Zeal for Life. “The shakes are for weight loss and nutrition,” says Bailey.

Classy Curves co-owners Debby Bailey (seated) and Clara Rosencutter have a passion for helping others feel and look their best.

to choose from," she says. Classy Cuts is an independent distributor for SeneGence, a line of cosmetics and skin care products that stay on during swimming, showering or when you’ve been crying, says Bailey. “The line offers a lot of colors,” she says. The products have not been tested on animals and carry no animal by-products. Instead, they contain all naturally recurring ingredients and are highly concentrated for greater value.

If you’re looking for headto-toe pampering or want to feel and look better, you can’t go wrong at Classy Curves and Classy Cuts. For more information, contact

CCelebrating Success Goodwill Industries of Tulsa had a record-setting 2013.

By Duane Blankenship For the past 87 years, Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has served area communities with dozens of programs and services, training facilities, 11 retail stores and 25 donation locations. The mission remains forever the same: to promote and make possible for every individual the dignity and self-sufficiency that comes with employment. The year 2013 was full of record-setting achievements for Goodwill. Last year, Goodwill collected, transported and processed over 21 million pounds of donations, resulting in a record volume for their retail stores. Monthly records in sales were set for every month except December when winter’s full force hit us. Following the damages incurred by the May 2011 tornado that devastated Joplin, Goodwill successfully opened a new store in February and main-

tained a permanent presence in Carthage. The Goodwill Job Connection exceeded 600 job placements in 2013, and with additional placements from Goodwill training programs, the organization set a record for total placements in one year. The Goodwill Job Connection is staffed Monday through Friday at Goodwill’s main facility on Southwest Blvd. in Tulsa. Services are provided on a walk-in basis. The program provides computer access and staff members who are trained to assist with developing resumes. These services are free of charge. Additionally, the Goodwill TulsaWORKS program provides training in computer, customer service, forklift and private security classes. All of Goodwill’s success over the past 87 years is, in large part, due to the generosity of citi-

zens who make donations to the organization. “Our future successes rely on the continuing faithfulness of individual donors, businesses and caring groups,” said Store Manager Jaime Monroe. Now is a great time to clean out closets and donate to Goodwill. “New items arrive Monday through Friday each week, and new merchandise is displayed each day,” said Jaime. “We have a great election of active wear, and all sizes of children’s clothing and shoes are base priced at just $2.49.” Goodwill stores also carry accessory items, belts, shoes, purses and jewelry, all at unbelievable prices. Stores offer 25 percent off your entire purchase for senior shoppers 55 or older on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Customer Appreciation Day is featured once a month with a 25 percent discount on everyone’s total purchases. February 15 is the date scheduled for Goodwill’s Winter Half-Price Sale featuring all men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing at 50 percent off. Visit the website to view the Goodwill Value Planner or ask for a copy when you visit any store. You can stay connected with Goodwill Tulsa on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. Goodwill news and great ideas are also available on the new Good Thinkin’ Blog (www.goodwilltulsa.org/ goodthinkin). A new Goodwill Store at 3110 Southwest Blvd. is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in May 2014. Help yourself while helping others by shopping Goodwill. If you would like to be part of the Goodwill success story, consider joining one of Goodwill's retail teams. Goodwill is currently hiring full-time and part-time sales associates in a number of locations. A full

range of benefits is available for full-time employees. Opportunities for growth and advancement in a missioncentered retail program make Goodwill the perfect choice for building a career in retail sales. Goodwill Industries is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Are You as Close to God As You Would Like to Be? Author and speaker Carol Round offers prayer journaling workshops, teaching women how to use journaling as a spiritual tool to nurture their relationship with God.

By Sheryl Sowell

A new year is in full swing, and many are still going strong with their resolutions to lose weight, quit smoking or learn a new hobby. Perhaps your personal goal is to focus on your spiritual wellbeing and nurture a more intimate relationship with God, but you're not sure how to go about doing so. Carol Round, author and speaker, discovered a technique over ten years ago that has allowed her to become more authentic in her relationship with God: prayer journaling. Carol has been keeping a prayer journal since 2001. Through this daily discipline, she discovered her true identity in Christ. Carol’s mission is to inspire women with her testimony and teach them the spiritual discipline of keeping a prayer journal by offering prayer journaling workshops. What exactly is a prayer journal? Carol explains that it is not a diary in which you record events of your daily life; rather, it is a tool for examining your life and a way

to keep track of your spiritual journey. It can also help you to develop a greater consistency in your prayer life. “Imagine being able to communicate your hopes, thoughts and feelings more clearly to your heavenly Father. Prayer journaling can do that once you make it a daily habit,” she says. Carol sits down each morning and pours her heart out into her journal, seeking guidance from the Lord. “Seizing the day by beginning it with God is one of the best ways I know to stay focused on growing a relationship with Him,” says Carol. “When I return to reread entries, I can see how God has answered my prayers and I discover how much I have grown. My prayer journal is like a love letter to God.” Before she wrote her book “Journaling with Jesus: How to Draw Closer to God” (as well as the companion workbook “The 40-Day Challenge”), Carol had been sharing with other women in

speaking engagements about the power of keeping a prayer journal. After the book was published, she began offering workshops on the subject. “My goal is to help others, especially women, to slow down and spend more time with the Lord and discover who we are in Christ. Our fast-paced society encourages us to be doers. While that can be good to an extent, I think if we take the time to discern what God wants us to do with our time, we would lead lives filled with less stress and more joy.” Carol has received a lot of positive feedback from women who have attended her workshops. One participant, Julie L., said, “Carol’s workshop will take you to new depths in knowing the Lord. If you seek a relationship with God, this is the place for you.” Melissa V. said, “I am a busy mom of young children. Utilizing the techniques Carol teaches has brought new life to my quiet times. helps me to stay focused so I can use my time more effectively.” To book Carol for a prayer journaling workshop, call (918) 540-4282 or email her at carolaround@yahoo.com. “I enjoy doing small intimate workshops of 15 to 30 women so I can relate to them on a more personal level,” she adds. After retiring from a 30year teaching career, Carol began using her love of writ-

ing and speaking to glorify God. Her weekly faith-based column, “A Matter of Faith,” runs in 12 Oklahoma newspapers and several national publications, and she is the author of five books.

Severe Sciatic and Back Pain Can Be Relieved Dr. Hardage specializes in sports medicine, and he addresses all areas of non-operative orthopedics, including back pain. “Our focus is on the non-surgical treatment of back pain,” he says. “Typically, we deal with true pain in the back or sciatic pain, which goes down the leg.” Many things can lead to back pain. For example, says Dr. Hardage, “It could be simple strain or pulling of a muscle, which usually resolves itself without intense therapy or treatment.” However, other things like herniated and bulging discs, as well as degenerative disc disease, can cause intense and chronic back pain. “When a patient first comes to our office with back pain,” he says, “we go through a process to determine what needs to be done.”

The first step in the process is to determine the source of the pain. “I start with getting a history by visiting with the patient to find out when the pain began, how it might have happened, and determining if the pain has increased or gotten better,” says Dr. Hardage. “I also find out what the patient has already tried to eliminate the pain.” After a physical exam, Dr. Hardage uses those results as well as the patient’s history to determine nerve function as well as limitations. “I then make a decision about what I believe to be the source of pain. Is it a bone, disc or muscle problem? If necessary, we use X-rays and MRIs to help further delineate the problem.” When a patient comes into the office with back pain, he or she wants relief.

“Initially,” Dr. Hardage says, “we want to calm down the acute flare-up of pain with either oral medication or an epidural steroid injection.” Dr. Hardage is trained to administer the injections, which saves patients a trip to Tulsa. “We want to put out the acute fire – calm things down – and then get them back to baseline with rehabilitation, physical therapy, and strength and core stabilization.” After determining the problem, Dr. Hardage outlines the treatment options for each patient. “I think it’s important for each patient to understand what options are available concerning their specific back problem and what plan we will follow so we can get them healed.” “Even more importantly,” he adds, “is to work with patients on prevention by strengthening and stabilizing the back

Outdoor Sporting Expo The Outdoor Sporting Expo will feature over 90,000 square feet of indoor exhibitor space. Exhibitors may apply now by contacting Claremore Main Street or Claremore Chamber of Commerce, or by visiting www.outdoorsportingexpo.com. Exhibitors will have the option of booth or bulk space starting at $150. Spots will be open on a first-come, first-serve basis until full. “Our goal is to provide exhibitors and sponsors with very affordable space so that they can showcase their products and services,” said Burrows. “Attendees will see a variety of products and services that deal with anything outdoors.” “We are looking for any type of homebased, outdoor exhibitors,” said Cindy Bissett, Claremore Main Street director. “So far these include taxidermy, tying jigs and lures, duck calls, service-related guides, lodges, dog training and more. We even have an exhibitor from Canada coming in who chose this show over the Kansas City show.” The show will also include exhibitors of RVs and four-wheelers, rods and reels and a golf simulator. Additionally, the Corps of Engineers and GRDA will be on hand to talk about parks, boat safety and ecosystems. “We are also bringing back the archery competition,” said Davis. “Last year there was a huge line and it was a big hit, so this year we will have divisions for both adults and children.” Committee members have confirmed some great celebrities and seminars for the show. “We are excited that three of our celebrities are confirmed for demonstrations, shows and seminars,” said

Bissett. “They include professional bass fisherman Tommy Biffle, world-renowned hunter Roger Raglin and famous alligator wrestler Jimmy Riffle.” Jimmy Riffle is from the popular Animal Planet series “Gator Boys.” He and his Road Show Crew will perform full gator shows, complete with alligators brought all the way from Florida, on Saturday and Sunday and meet with fans. “We got so many compliments on Jimmy last year that we knew we had to bring him back,” said Bissett. “People were lined up to meet him and get his autograph. He is one of the nicest celebrities we’ve ever worked with, and he is great with the kids.” Roger Raglin, known as America’s favorite white-tail deer hunter, is a hunting icon. He has traveled the world, produced over 70 full-length hunting videos, holds numerous world records, and has been inducted into the National Outdoor Hall of Fame. He also hosts “Roger Raglin’s Outdoors” exclusively on the Outdoor Channel. This will be Raglin’s first time to do a show in Oklahoma. Tommy Biffle, a well-known professional bass fisherman, will serve as the show’s featured angler. Biffle has fished the pro-circuit and B.A.S.S. series for over 26 years, is a member of the B.A.S.S. Millionaires and has his own signature bait called “The Biffle Bug.” He also owns Lakeside Polaris in Wagoner. “A new group, Green Country Fly Fishers out of Bartlesville, will be on hand for demonstration and fly tying," said Davis. “The show will also feature special

They offer a variety of services in addition to metal roofing and buildings, including Lucas Equipment such as hay spears, bale unrollers, rock bucket, grapples, pallet forks, and disc-mower caddy. Their signature piece of equipment is the Groundhog Arena Tool, designed by Raymond himself. It is a unique tool that breaks up and levels out dirt, making the surface safer and less impactful on horses’ hooves. It has become the tool of choice for the National Finals Rodeo, as well as numerous other rodeo associations, farms and agricultural businesses. “The original unit, built over 17 years ago, is still in use today in the Lucas family arena,” says Tammy.

HHarvest Big Savings This Spring Catch up on organizing your closets and get ahead of springtime shopping with the help of Children’s Orchard.

By Christopher Davis

Following the holiday season, most parents face the double challenge of catching up and cleaning up. A tradition for parents is sifting through dressers, closets and toy boxes in search of items in need of “disappearance” to make room for the new. Often,

clothes are only worn a couple times before a child has outgrown them. While many are content to drop off a box at the local thrift store or donation center, there are times when a parent feels a twinge of pain at the thought of the hard-earned money

Kari Hendrix, owner of Children’s Orchard in Owasso.

they spent not living up to its potential when that cute outfit from The Gap gets folded up for the donation box after one outing. Thankfully, Children’s Orchard offers a simple solution. Children’s Orchard is a resale shop in Owasso that specializes in gently-used name brand clothing for kids. Parents will find almost-new clothes from brands like Baby Gap, Old Navy, Abercrombie, Gymboree and others at a fraction of the retail price. The store has larger toys and items for sale as well. Their inventory is supplied through high-quality items sold to them by customers. So, whether parents are looking to sell outgrown wardrobes or an affordable and convenient store to replace them, Children’s Orchard should be on everyone’s mind. The store has been in the Owasso Market Shopping Center for over 13 years. Hendrix purchased the franchise three years ago, not long after she discovered the store as a customer. “I received a lot of clothing and

other baby items which seemed to be outgrown almost before they had a chance to be worn,” recalls Hendrix. She heard about Children’s Orchard and brought in a bundle of items to sell. She was pleased by the approach for dealing with all the extra clothes and toys accumulating at home. Being able to earn an extra 25 percent for store credit proved to be a convenient way to fill in the occasional gap in her daughter’s wardrobe. Not long after she began selling and shopping at Children’s Orchard, the store came up for sale. Hendrix stepped up, excited for the opportunity to provide a helpful service to parents. Hendrix and her staff strive to educate parents on how to best make the store’s policies work to their advantage. “Our buying philosophy is very easy. Customers can bring in two average-sized plastic grocery bags full of clothing, books, toys, or a couple pieces of equipment. And we promise to serve them in 20 minutes or less. They will know what dollar amount they can receive from their

items and can then decide if they want cash or store credit,” says Hendrix. Store hours for walk-in buying are Monday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For larger quantities, customers are encouraged to make an appointment. Customers who choose to use the purchase amount as store credit will receive a bonus of 25 percent added to the value. There are several promotions and events planned in anticipation of spring. On February 1, customers can fill a bag for six dollars. On February 8, the store holds its Spring Kickoff Sale. Customers will receive 50 percent back in store credit for purchases of $30 or more. On March 8, Easter outfits will be on display. From March 14-16, the store will hold its Spring Sale.

Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center will be packed with explosive dance and aerial stunts as “Bring It On: The Musical” presents its Oklahoma debut and an evening sprinkled with sass on February 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $60. Inspired by the 2000 film “Bring It On,” this new Broadway smash will take the audience on a high-flying journey through friendship, forgiveness and determination. It tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill and high stakes of competitive high school cheerleading. “What I would love the audience to come away with is that, whether you’re a 15year-old cheerleader or a 51year-old woman or an 87-yearold grandfather, you just saw yourself on stage, and that you have renewed excitement about what you do,” Broadway lyricist Amanda Green said. Uniting some of the freshest and funniest creative minds on Broadway, “Bring It On: The Musical” earned Tony® nominations for Best Musical and Best Choreography, and “The New York Times” called it "impossible to resist!" Closing out Broken

Arrow Performing Arts Center’s fifth anniversary is “Memphis” on April 22. From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tenn., “Memphis” is a winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical. It bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, “Memphis” is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. Both shows are suitable for ages 13 and up. Tickets are available at the BAPAC box office located at 701 S. Main St. in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at 918-259-5778, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patrons can also visit the BAPAC Facebook page at facebook.com/brokenarrowpac for show updates and more.

Industry Veteran Sheri Miksa Named President and CEO of Mazzio’s LLC The Italian fast casual restaurant chain hires new executive leadership. By Sheryl Sowell

Mazzio’s LLC President and CEO Sheri Miksa.

Tulsa-based Mazzio’s LLC, owner and operator of the Mazzio’s Italian Eatery and Oliveto Italian Bistro brands, has named Sheri Miksa, an industry veteran with over 25 years in the restaurant, foodservice and hospitality industries, as President and CEO effective Jan. 13. “We are thrilled to have attracted an experienced fast casual restaurant industry CEO like Sheri Miksa,” said Eric Selby, on behalf of Mazzio’s LLC’s ownership group. “We are certain Sheri’s strong industry background and experience, including her substantial time in the fast casual segment and with franchised organizations, will help us continue to build our brands in the growing casual Italian segments.” Mazzio’s origins began in 1961 with the Pizza Parlor, later known as Ken’s Pizza, founded by Ken Selby. Today the Mazzio’s corporation, parent to the Mazzio’s and Oliveto concepts, has grown to more than 140 locations, in 10 states. Most recently, Miksa was CEO of fast casual emerging concept Boneheads Grilled

Fish & Piri Piri Chicken. Miksa’s previous CEO roles include leading the 150-unit fast casual Rubio’s Restaurants chain (Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grills – then NASDAQ: RUBO), and the 140-unit Robeks Juice brand, a 99 percent franchised fast casual chain. At Robeks, the number of restaurants increased by 50 percent during her tenure. “I am excited about the future of Mazzio’s,” said Miksa. “Fast casual Italian is an under-served and growing segment. Mazzio’s has been serving craveable pizzas, pastas and hot Italian sandwiches for over 50 years. I look forward to leading the company and working with the great people at Mazzio’s to achieve the brands’ significant growth potential, and to bringing the Mazzio’s experience – quality, flavorful, Italian dishes served fast, in a warm, inviting environment – to more markets across the country.” Previously, Miksa held executive roles with AFC Enterprises’ Seattle Coffee Company, Taco Bell Corporation, and LSG Sky Chefs. She earned an MBA

from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Earlier in her career, she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Alaska. Mazzio's Italian Eatery's 140 locations offer expedited service and convenience, great value, and high quality menu items in a fast casual setting. The family-friendly menu features varieties of pizza, pasta, salad and sandwiches for lunch and dinner, making it a perfect choice for dine-in, carryout, delivery or catering needs. The Oliveto Italian Bistros, with locations in Oklahoma and Texas, provide artisan-inspired dishes in an upscale neighborhood dining concept. Open for lunch, dinner and later, the bistro menu board boasts appetizers, entrees, desserts and a wide variety of beers, wines and cocktails. For more information, contact

AAn Extraordinary Weekend for Women The 2014 Extraordinary Women Conference will be February 28-March 1 at the Mabee Center.

By Sheryl Sowell

Ladies, mark your calendars now for the Extraordinary Women Conference, a weekend designed to help you draw closer to the heart of God and His amazing plan for your daily life. The conference will be held at the Mabee Center, February 28 through March 1, 2014. The Extraordinary Women Conference will be a wonderful weekend filled with music, praise and worship, entertainment and special guest speakers. Lonestar is celebrating their 20th year by reuniting with original lead singer

Richie McDonald, releasing a new album, and embarking on an anniversary tour, including a performance at the Extraordinary Women Conference in Tulsa. Known for merging their country roots with rich vocals, the band has achieved ten #1 country hits along with receiving the CMA Vocal Group of the Year award in 2001. For all their accomplishments, the biggest achievement of the band’s career has been witnessing the impact of Lonestar songs in the lives of others, according to lead singer Richie McDonald.

“Music is a very powerful tool and can help people going through both good and bad times,” he says. McDonald is proud that his band will be reaching fans at a special event like the Extraordinary Women Conference. “I want people to know that I am a country artist, but I was a Christian long before I was a country artist. It is rewarding to know that I can sing about my faith and maybe make a difference in somebody’s life.” Also performing at the EWomen conference, Michael O’Brien was the lead singer

of the Christian band NewSong for seven years. Sensing that God was placing a strong call on his life to step out and minister as a solo artist, he resigned his position with the band and has now been serving in the music ministry on his own for 20 years. Michael has built a reputation as an incredibly gifted singer and songwriter with a heart for ministering to the body of Christ. Julie Clinton, president of Extraordinary Women, has spoken to hundreds of thousands of women as host of EWomen conferences all across America. A person of deep faith, she cares passionately about seeing women live out their dreams by finding their freedom in Christ. “We as women give of ourselves all day, every day – to our husbands, children, careers and households – but we rarely give back to ourselves. This conference is our way of giving back to women, offering them a weekend away to experience hope and healing through Jesus Christ,” says Julie. “Extraordinary Women shares with all women, regardless of their religious affiliation, the love, acceptance and completeness God has for us.”

“Our speakers will discuss issues related to women, many that aren’t necessarily talked about at church on Sunday morning, such as divorce, illness and disappointment,” says Julie. The theme of this year’s conference, “The Joyful Journey,” comes from Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” “Life is not always joyful,” says Julie, “but we must remember that the only true everlasting joy can be found through the Lord.” In addition to Julie, several other women will offer insightful and inspirational presentations at the conference, including Karen Kingsbury, Chonda Pierce, Carol Kent, Margaret Feinberg and Lisa Whelchel.
