Helping the Body Heal Itself Dr. Steven Hardage of Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center treats patients with platelet rich plasma. By Lorrie Ward

When we hear the word “spinning,” many may think of an exercise class that gained popularity in recent years. But in Dr. Steve Hardage’s office at Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, “spinning” is an integral part of healing, as it helps create the PRP injections that are revolutionizing

the treatment of chronic pain from injuries. “PRP injections are a new, exciting thing in medicine to help tissues heal,” says Dr. Hardage, who is a primary care physician who specializes in sports medicine at EOOC Claremore with a group of orthopedic physicians. “What’s exciting is

that it uses the good stuff from your own blood to make things want to heal.” PRP stands for platelet rich plasma and it is used to help facilitate the healing of injured musculoskeletal tissue. To garner the needed platelets, a small sample of the patient’s own blood is

Steve Hardage, M.D., is always happy to discuss PRP injections and other treatment options with patients.

Reignite Your Zeal for Life Jennifer and Will Watkins are walking testimonials of Zeal for Life. By Lorrie Ward

Will and Jennifer on the beach in Cabo, Mexico on one of their free Zeal vacations.

Three years ago, if you would have told Jennifer Watkins that she would soon use the word “zeal” to describe her life, she probably would not have believed you. Zeal might

have been something she desired, but it was as far from what she was feeling as the letter “A” is from the letter “Z” in the alphabet. Her husband, Will, who was a mem-

ber of the Oklahoma National Guard for 13 years, had been injured pre-deployment in 2011 and was in the Wounded Warrior Project at the time. Jennifer was working as a realtor, and she felt herself in poor health as well. Both Jennifer and Will were depressed about their physical and financial situation, and it was having a negative effect on their relationship. The couple wanted to change their lives, but they were not sure how to go about it. In January of 2012, Will happened to be on Facebook and saw that a friend was committing to the (continued on page 28)

A public servant: that is what Ron Burrows has worked towards all of his adult working life. Therefore, his recent decision to run for the position of District 3 Rogers County Commissioner seems a natural one. “I view all my job experience as being some sort of public service,” says Burrows, who is running for public office for the first time. “A commissioner is the highest level of

public service in the community.” Burrows’ campaign will emphasize his 30-plus year work history, experience that has given him a solid background in budget processes and team leadership. For the past five years, Burrows has served as the general manager of the Claremore Expo Center, which has seen much growth and improvement under his leadership. “During this time, the number of event days has increased by about

100 days per year, but our staff has stayed the same,” says Burrows. “We’ve managed to keep up with the growth by developing better processes and procedures and working smarter.” Also, the Expo RV Park has doubled its revenues under his management. Burrows began researching the responsibilities of a county commissioner, attending meetings and ana(continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

BIG HAT, NO CATTLE BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

There’s a saying in Oklahoma when speaking about a person who has a tendency to tell big stories and have no followthrough. We call it “Big Hat, No Cattle.” Often folks have big ideas but don’t back up their talk with concrete actions. Now, there is nothing wrong with being a “dreamer,” but it has long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sit back and let things happen to them. They go out and make things happen. They have a dream, create a plan, take action, and don’t give up. So strive not to be a “drugstore cowboy.” Make every effort to say what you mean and mean what you say. In the end, the only thing we really have is our integrity. Our word, what we speak to ourselves and others, is important. It is really everything we are. Your character is the only thing you have to show others. Here are some ideas for NOT

creating a Big Hat, No Cattle persona: • Shut your mouth. Listening is so much more important that talking. We’ve all heard “You’ve got two ears and one mouth for a reason.” So tell the truth, be authentic and have confidence. But remember that your opinion is just that, an opinion. It is your truth but it may not be someone else’s. • Work Hard. You need to have a good reputation before you can rest on it. The only way to build a good reputation is by working hard and getting results. With friends this means being there for the hard stuff and carrying the load, with business it means delivering on your promises and going the extra mile.

• Be Humble. When you have finally gotten to where you were getting to, don’t be boastful, flaunt it, and try to use it for power. Realize that you didn’t get there without a lot of help from partners who believed in you, from clients and employees that allowed you to help them achieve what they achieved, and from just the grace of God. Know who helped you and how they helped you, and don’t forget to thank them fully and often. Be grateful. Mother’s Day Gifts M and Much More The District on Main offers a variety of beautiful gifts and fashions. By Lorrie Ward

Once upon a time, shopping for apparel was an enjoyable experience for most women. Shop owners concentrated on personalized service and quality goods in order to help a customer create her own unique sense of style. When a lady walked into a boutique, she could count on help not only with choices and sizing, but with accessories, jewelry and shoes to complete her ensemble. She did not just finish her shopping day with a sack of clothing – she arrived at home with a new wardrobe. If you think the good old days are gone or believe that such experiences only exist in fairy tales and fables, think again! “Once upon a time” is here and now at The District on Main in Claremore. Owners Cari Bohannan and Susan Todd strive to create a shopping experience that is both enjoyable and productive for the customer from the moment she enters the store. “We focus on customer service,” says Susan. “When someone comes in, we try to

help them pick out clothing that makes them feel good about themselves.” Cari and Susan search far and wide for quality brands to fill these needs. They go to market in Dallas every couple of months and visit various showrooms, where they can touch, feel and see fabrics and other materials before presenting them in the boutique. Cari points out that actually seeing the products helps with sizing, as she and Susan like to carry a wide variety of sizes (from small to 3x) and various brands tend to be sized differently. “We try to carry clothing to fit everyone’s shape and style, as well as a variety of prices to fit all budgets,” says Cari, pointing out that their “typical” customer is any woman aged 16 to 80+, from different walks of life and buying clothes for different purposes – whether for school, work, or going to tea. The District on Main is already home to several popular, quality boutique brands, and just in time for Mother’s Day, the Missy Robertson brand will

Susan Todd and Cari Bohannon, owners, The District on Main.

join the list. Missy Robertson (of “Duck Dynasty” fame) has created a line of clothing for the working woman which balances style with modesty. Cari and Susan have also expanded their denim lines to include Kut from the Cloth, Vigoss and Lucky. The latest addition to the store is Southern Marsh, which includes a men’s line. For Mother’s Day, they especially recommend gift buyers consider a charm bracelet for Mom from Brighton Jewelry. Whether she has already started a bracelet and just needs another charm or two, or is just getting started, this jew-

elry line gives new definition to “a unique gift.” Bracelets, necklaces, or even earrings can be built out of practically any combination of beads, stones and charms, depending on the personality and history of the person receiving the gift. The theme can be based on anything from birthstones, initials, sports, hobbies, or a combination of all – or it can be as simple as a collection of pretty beads and rhinestones. “If you can imagine it,” says Cari, “there is a bead or a charm for it!” If personalization is your goal, The District on Main also carries Lenny and Eva vintage

style customizable jewelry. The District on Main is filled with items that would make perfect Mother’s Day gifts – or you can purchase a gift certificate and give your mother the gift of a perfect shopping experience. For more information, contact

Should You Hire a Plumber to Renovate Your Bathroom? Yes! Although there are a lot of people that might want to renovate their bathroom themselves, the bathroom is one room in a house that is suggested that one hires a professional. Just like electric wires, plumbing can be extremely tricky if the person doing it does not know exactly what they are doing and needs to be done. This is one of the best reasons to consider hiring a professional plumber to help renovate a bathroom. They have the right tools and know exactly what to do in order to make a bathroom renovation run smoothly.

It takes a lot of knowledge, but even if the home owner is just replacing small amounts of plumbing during a bathroom renovation, the cost of a professional plumber can save money in the long run. Flooding and pipe bursting are a common occurrence when home owners deal with plumbing renovations in their bathroom, and this can cause a large dent in the projects money predictions. Therefore, if a home owner is ever considering renovating their bathroom for any reason, it would benefit them to look into their local plumbers to get assistance and insight on the project.

PProtection from Oklahoma’s Precarious Weather Lucas Metal Works has been offering stable buildings, roofs and more for 45 years.

By Lorrie Ward

Will Rogers once said, “If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it’ll change.” Those who have lived here for any length of time know that Oklahoma’s native son was right on target with his observation, as the Oklahoma sky can dump cold rain one day and play cloudless host to a blistering hot sun the

next. That’s why the team at Lucas Metal Works takes every construction job they perform as seriously as an oncoming twister – because if you live around here, that’s just what you might get. According to Tammy Laakso of Lucas Metal Works, wind load is one of the major considerations taken into

David Shaw in the sheet metal shop at Lucas Metal Works.

account by the design team at Lucas once a building’s purpose and type has been chosen. Will it be a workplace or hobby shop, where the owner will do glass work, wood work, auto repair? Is the building needed for storage, and if so, what are they storing – household items, farm implements, automobiles, recreational vehicles, boats, motorcycles, airplanes? “A lot of people are buying tracts of land but don’t want to put a mobile home on it and yet don’t feel they can afford to put a traditional wood frame home on the property,” Tammy notes. “That’s why shop style homes (combination shop/home) are becoming more prevalent.” In addition to wind load, designers also factor possible snow and ice loads into the equation as they help design the building. They have a computer system that helps them identify potential problem areas, such as wind tunnels, and that will help advise how many extra steel beams should be used to make the home or building safe against added adversity. Once these issues have been identified, plans can

proceed with other desired aspects of the building, such as exterior finish and color (Lucas has 16 colors to choose from), types of doors, windows and insulation. Lucas offers metal panels in 16 colors and their materials are Energy Star rated, which will translate in to an average of 25 percent savings on utility bills. Sometimes people already have a wood frame home, but would like to consider replacing their traditional asphalt roof with a metal one. “A traditional roof in Oklahoma has to be changed every 10 to 15 years due to heat, high winds, tornadoes, hail, snow and ice,” says Tammy. “But our metal roofs have a 40-year warranty – once you put one of our roofs on your house, you pretty much know you’re not going to have to change it.” Lucas Metal Works has built a stellar reputation over the last 45 years, and not just for putting things solidly in place. Another branch of the business, Lucas Equipment, keeps things on the move, providing hay spears, bale unrollers, rock buckets, grapples, pallet forks, disc mower cad-

dies, and their signature piece of equipment, the Ground Hog Arena Tool. Designed by Lucas Metal Works’ founder, Raymond Lucas, the Ground Hog Arena Tool is used to break up and level dirt in arenas for rodeos, competitions and other events, making the ground level and safe for horses and other livestock. Whether you need a barn, a shop, a garage, a greenhouse, a home – or all of the above – or you want to consider safer, longer lasting options for your existing structure, be sure to visit with the team at Lucas Metal Works in Ochelata, where they will work with you from concept to completion to make sure your home or building withstands whatever the fickle Oklahoma sky wants to hand out.

Hop on the Dirt Road to Ne-Mar’s Newest Boutique A unique new shop with affordable prices comes to Claremore, offering contemporary, stylish country home décor and trendy fashions and accessories.

By Carol Beck-Round Ask Jennifer Adams or Patty Wylie to describe their new business, Dirt Road Boutique, and they both respond with one word – unique. Another word for unique is different, and when you walk through the doors of the new boutique located on the east side of Ne-Mar Center, you will understand why. Family-owned and operated, Dirt Road Boutique offers contemporary, stylish country home décor as well as trendy, affordable jewelry and ladies apparel ranging from junior sizes to women’s 3X. They also specialize in silk floral designs. The daughter-in-law/motherin-law team –co-owners of the boutique – had been talking about starting their own business for quite a while. “Finally,” says mother-in-law Patty, “we decided to do it.” Both women love decorating and fashion. Patty reveals that each fixture in the store was once a piece of furniture. “We don’t have typical store fixtures,” she says. “We used old furniture pieces that we repurposed.” Old desks, dressers, bookcases, tables and even doors have been transformed into beautiful fixtures to

display the vast array of products. In addition to their unique store fixtures, you will discover merchandise not found anywhere else in Claremore. “We wanted to be different and not like everyone else,” says Jennifer. “There’s not another store in town like it.” So what will you find at Dirt Road Boutique? Unusual home décor including photos and frames, canister sets, clocks, lamps, candle holders, vases, mirrors, table runners, wreaths and furniture – and everything is affordable. Because the items are unique, “not everyone will have the same thing you have,” says Jennifer – and that applies to home décor as well as ladies apparel and accessories. “We’re also not going to keep the same thing in stock,” she adds. “When something sells out, we’ll move onto something else. So every time you come in, you will see new merchandise.” “Our business is centered on our strong Christian beliefs, and we proudly carry Keepers of the Light jar candles, melts and pillar candles,” Jennifer adds. “They are a Christian-based company out of New Jersey hiring the

15

handicapped, paying them a full wage and allowing them to work however long they wish to wick their candles.” Another product line the store carries is a renowned bath and body line from Somerset, England. “We have three of the Somerset Toiletry Companies’ tropical scents – Grapefruit & Orange, Coconut & Lime, and Strawberry & Papaya in Hand & Body Lotion, Shower Gel, Sugar Scrub, and Body Cream.” Patty, who has over 40 years experience in the floral design business, including almost 10 years with Cohlamias in Tulsa, also brings her expertise with silk flower arrangements to Claremore. Her delightful, creative arrangements, including floral wreaths, won’t be found elsewhere in town. “We also sell silk flowers so customers can make their own arrangements or wreaths. If you want a custom arrangement, you can also bring in your own container,” Patty adds. With their combined skills in designing and setting things up, the team has helped brides with wedding flowers and décor. “We also offer this service through our

boutique,” says Jennifer. Patty adds, “We have something in here for everybody.” That something for everyone also includes an exclusive line of Abdallah gourmet candy, including caramels, candy bars, chocolate singles and a type of turtle candy called “grizzlies.” With Mother’s Day right around the corner, you can find many wonderful gift ideas – and gift wrapping is only $1. If you just can’t make up your mind, you can also purchase a gift certificate in any denomination. “Everyone who comes in the door says how cute our store is

and how good our prices are,” says Jennifer. “Come in, look around and see for yourself just how unique we are.” Oh, and their unique store name? “We both grew up in the country,” she adds. “Our best memories are from some old dirt road.” For more information, contact

May Is Tennis Month! The Serve for Youth tennis tournament will be held May 30-June 1. By Liz Cary

If you enjoy tennis at any level, consider playing in the fifth annual Serve for Youth tennis tournament in Claremore, Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1. In 2010, a well-known Claremore tennis player and local tennis coordinator, Dian Russell, passed away. Many of her family and friends gathered together to play tennis in her honor and raise money to benefit Volunteers for Youth. Last year, the event had about 40 participants, and this year the tournament coordinators would welcome even more tennis players for the tournament. This tournament is a doubles-only tournament held at the Claremore High School tennis courts, located at 1410 E. Stuart Roosa. There are women’s, men’s and mixed doubles draws. Cost is $25 a person or $50 for a doubles team, with proceeds benefitting Volunteers for Youth. Each participant will receive a Serve for Youth visor or water bottle. Winners will be awarded a Serve for Youth champion towel. Don’t have a doubles part-

ner? No problem! We’ll do our best to pair participants for the tournament. Ready to sign up? Go to volunteersforyouth.com and click on the link for the Serve for Youth entry form. Players under 18 may play with a parent’s consent.

Tennis skill levels for participants varied last year, from college level players to weekend warriors and high school players. We accept all skill levels! This tournament benefits Volunteers for Youth. Their mission is to positively impact

www.ValueNews.com the lives of youth in Rogers County and provide services including mentoring, safe and structured activities, and service opportunities. Currently, Volunteers for Youth offers five programs: PAL, BLAST, StepUp, DFC Project and U-Turn Academy. The PAL program is a schoolbased mentoring program that matches a student who could benefit from pairing with a caring adult mentor at school. The PAL program recently introduced an e-PAL program, where the mentor emails with

a student weekly, and visits at school for an hour a month. BLAST is an after-school program where a child can get help with homework and have fun after school. StepUp offers juvenile first offenders and those demonstrating signs of delinquent behavior an opportunity to avoid the overcrowded juvenile system and a chance to get back on track while being closely monitored and supported. Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Project works to reduce substance abuse among our youth, with a particular emphasis on underage drinking and prescription drug misuse. U-Turn Academy targets Rogers County youth who are on long-term school suspension from any school in the county. Volunteers for Youth participates in the Drug Free Communities project and provides education in drug and alcohol prevention for teens. Volunteers for Youth is a 501c3 status, nonprofit organization supported by individual contributions, grants, fundraisers, and the Rogers County United Way.

Do You Dream of Being a Cosmetologist?

Claremore Beauty College offers hands-on experience and personal attention to help students achieve success in the field of cosmetology.

By Carol Beck-Round

Many dream of one day becoming a cosmetologist. If you’ve been searching for the right place to get hands-on experience in every facet of the field, from haircutting, coloring, perming and current hairstyles to nail techniques and facials, Claremore Beauty College is dedicated to helping each student learn all the basic requirements of each course so the student will have a firm foundation to build on in their career. In April of this year, Claremore Beauty College celebrated 45 years of service to the community and surrounding areas. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Denise Nelson, owner and instructor, and Mindy Gerving, instructor, bring a wealth of knowledge to help students achieve their goals. Claremore Beauty College stands apart from other schools of its kind for several reasons. One unique attribute is that the school offers a hands-on curriculum beginning the first day of class. “From the first day of attendance the student will be learning not only from their textbook, but hands-on projects on the mannequin. We also have an excellent clientele com-

ing in regularly, so students get plenty of practice working with real people as well.” Personal, one-on-one education is a priority at Claremore Beauty College. “Our students do not get lost in the crowd,” Denise explains. “We work with each student and focus on teaching them interpersonal skills to make them even more successful in the cosmetology field.” The college also boasts a 100 percent pass rate at State Board. Denise and her husband, Duane, have owned the school since 1996. “We have enjoyed seeing many young people succeed in their lives,” she says. “It is wonderful to take a young person into the school and see the difference in one year’s time. He or she can go from a quiet, insecure and sometimes unmotivated individual to a confident, knowledgeable and successful career person.” Located one block from downtown Claremore Main Street, the 3,330-square-foot facility consists of one major clinic area, individual work stations, one large classroom, a library, and an administrative and counseling office. More than 13 of the

Claremore area salons are owned or managed by Claremore Beauty College graduates. “I am proud of all our graduates and thrilled to see them enjoy success in the growing field of cosmetology,” says Denise. RRound-Up Your Change Safenet Services’ annual campaign collects coins to help provide shelter and counseling to victims of domestic abuse.

By Lorrie Ward Sometimes when we hear that change jingling around in our pockets or purses, we do not give it much thought. After all, those are just coins, right? How could mere pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters make any difference in a world where even a dollar bill is considered of little consequence? But things can really add up when those little coins are thrown together into a united purpose – and that’s what the organizers of Safenet Services’ annual Round-Up counted on

when they distributed 100 acrylic houses to 64 partnering locations across Rogers and Mayes Counties last year, encouraging people to “Round-Up” to the nearest dollar and put those loose coins to better use than collecting pocket lint. “We adopted the RoundUp last year as a sustainability campaign after we moved into our new facility,” says Nancy Phelps, director of development at Safenet Services, which provides shelter and counseling services for the victims of domestic violence. “It’s

wonderful how last year went and to see the things that are happening because of this event.” It is so wonderful, in fact, that Nancy has been joined by Germaine Watkins and Layla Freeman, who are co-chairs of Glamour Gals, a pre-event created to help premiere the Round-Up, which starts May 15 and runs through July 31. Additional committee members include: Salon Chair Leisa Toops, Cindy Griffith, Deanna Parsons, Rhett Chanley, Edie Tolbert, Nichole Potter,

www.ValueNews.com Julie Simmons, Eva Norris, Cari Bohannan, Susan Todd, Driven Digital Team, Kristen Rosenberry, Lacey Hendrix, Robin Gordon and Rose Ann McCaw. Glamour Gals started on April 21 and will continue through May 31. During this time, area salons are partnering with Safenet and offering glamour packages at discounted prices, with a portion of the proceeds set aside for Safenet Services. “As April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Mother’s Day, prom and graduation are in May, it seemed the perfect time to bring glamour and confidence to women,” says Layla. Premiere sponsors in Rogers County include Elizabeth Jean Salon, Eva’s Waterfall Retreat and Stonebrook Day Spa, and in Mayes County, Genesis Massage and Salon. Three packages are available. The “Annie Oakley” ($75) includes shampoo, cut and style with level 1 stylist, mani with gel nails and pedi by Elizabeth Jean Salon and Stonebrook Day Spa. The “Laura Ingalls Wilder” ($95) includes a 30-minute massage, full facial and brow wax by Genesis Massage and Salon in Pryor. The “Calamity Jane” ($150) includes shampoo, cut, style and color, mani with gel nails, pedi, and 30-minute massage by Elizabeth Jean Salon, Eva’s Waterfall Retreat and Stonebrook Day Spa. (Color includes one color or highlight upgrade for additional fee.) Other partnering salons are taking part in this event and will give back a percentage of their proceeds during April and May – look for the Safenet Round-Up logo for participating sponsors. Packages will be gift wrapped and available for purchase at Safenet partner location

The District on Main, where the buyer will also be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate. Pick-up location in Pryor will be at Robin’s Nest Flower & Gifts at 27 N. Vann. The buyer will be entered in a drawing for a freshcut flower arrangement. To kick off the Round-Up in style, Cotton Eyed Joe’s in Claremore will host a Round-Up Barbeque Boogie on May 17, featuring barbeque, live music, and dancing for the entire family from 5 to 9 p.m. Nancy has been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses and individuals who want to help break the cycle of abuse, which can last for generations. “We of course had great hopes for the Round-Up campaign when we implemented it – you always have such grandiose plans,” says Nancy. “But to see it come to fruition is so wonderful.” But even with all the excitement, she still notes that the little things count – like the Safenet Round-Up partner emblem. “One lady in an abusive situation went to a location for help because she saw the emblem there – and that is our whole desire, to help people know where they can come in any domestic violence situation,” she says. “It is worth it all to know we were able to help even one family.”

The cold hard fact is that as soon as you drive your new car off the lot, it depreciates in value. How much it depreciates varies from car to car depending on a number of factors. During the term of a loan, many car owners find themselves upside-down, meaning they owe more than the vehicle’s insured value. This is especially true when the car is financed for more than 90% of the purchased price or its value. Your financial situation can potentially turn south if your car is totaled in an accident before your loan balance levels out with the value of your vehicle. Good news, there is a solution – Guaranteed Auto Protection or GAP*. A GAP policy can be taken out on new, used and refinanced vehicles, motorcycles, boats and RVs. It helps in the event of a loss, covering the difference between your car’s

cash value (primary insurance company settlement) and the outstanding balance on your loan, according to Kevi Zufall, AVP, consumer loan officer, RCB Bank. “This is a little known product that can offer peace of mind for many borrowers,” said Zufall. “Without GAP insurance, if your car is totaled and you still owe more than your car is worth, you could owe hundreds to possibly thousands of dollars out of pocket. GAP covers that difference.” GAP is worth considering if you plan to take out a long term loan (60 months or more), roll over negative equity into a refinance, or purchase a vehicle that depreciates fast. Take this example. You purchase a car for $25,000 and make $1,000 down payment. Your loan is 60 months with 1.79% APR†, which makes your monthly payment $417.71. Six

months later, you’re in a wreck and your car is totaled. At the time of your wreck, your car is valued at $20,000 (20% depreciation). Your insurance policy has a $1,000 deductible, and so they write you a check for $19,000. This leaves you with a $3,158.40 outstanding balance on your loan and no car. Without GAP, you’re responsible for paying the outstanding loan balance. If you purchased GAP when you took out your loan, your outstanding balance and insurance deductible* is covered by the policy. That’s a load off your back. “RCB sells GAP for $388, a discounted price compared to dealerships,” Zufall said. “That’s a small fee that could save you an abundance of money in the long run.” GAP isn’t for everyone. If you have a short-term loan or paid a big down payment, GAP might not be the best fit for you. The thing to do is talk to your lender. To learn more about GAP coverage stop by your local RCB Bank and chat with one of our lenders. You can also call us at 855-BANK-RCB. We’re happy to help, at no obligation. a 3% discount for qualified applicants and automatic debit of monthly payment from an RCB Bank checking or savings account. Rate could increase if automatic debit is cancelled at any time during the term of the loan. Certain restrictions apply. * GAP Auto Coverage is not an insurance product. Consumers are required to maintain regular car insurance as a condition of their loan. For this article, information on GAP coverage is based on the Frost GAP program, www.visualgap.com. Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown comes back to Claremore with more than $10,000 in cash prizes.

By Carol Beck-Round Battle of the Big Cats: Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown willreturn to the Claremore Expo Center on June 14. With last year’s premiere event surpassing everyone’s expectations, organizer Kaleb Summers is excited about the upcoming tournament. While Summers was hoping for a good turnout for the inaugural event, he was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response last year. Offering over $10,000 in prize money – the largest amount in Oklahoma noodling competitions – 132 teams from Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Iowa competed during the 48-hour tournament. Summers says this year’s event should be as big as ever with more prize money, new competition rules and two new events. One of the most important rule changes specifies that all residents and nonresidents who enter a team must compete inside Oklahoma’s borders in a state lake or designated water system. “This means no teams can go across the Oklahoma state borders, catch their fish and bring them back across the state line to check in at the tournament,” says Summers. Another important change involves team numbers and entry fees. Last year’s entry fee was $50 per person, with the winner taking home the top prize for the largest catfish. With new rules in place, a three-man team pays a $150 entry fee. Instead of the top prize going to the largest catfish, the heaviest three-fish stringer will nab the top prize of $5,000. The second place

team will win $2,500 cash, while $1,500 will be awarded to the third place finishers. In addition, the 13th place stringer will receive $500. Two new categories have been added, with a $500 bounty going to the team with the largest Big Blue Cat and another $500 bounty going to the team with the largest Big Flathead. “We want to keep this tournament on a level playing field,” says Summers, “so we will be administering polygraph tests to a random selection of winners. Because of the large prize money involved, we want to make sure no one loses sight of what this tournament is all about. Sometimes, when a lot of money is involved, it can get in the way of morals. We have put these new rules in place to guarantee the continued success of this event.” In addition, a 5K Mud Cat Run is being added to the festivities.Cosponsored by the Claremore Fire Department, the run will begin and end at the Expo. The entry fee per person is $40. For more information about the obstacle course details and prize money, check out the website, www.BigCatBattle. com. Deadline for entering is 5 p.m. on June 11. With the popularity of last year’s “Money the Hard Way,” this year’s event will include a competition just for kids. Only 15 two-man (kid) teams will be allowed to enter. Each team will have a choice to vie for $100 by stringing a fish underwater with the fastest time or opting to locate the gar in the tank with a $50 purse clipped to its fin.

A tradeshow, noodling demonstrations, live entertainment, a fish fry, family activities and “Money the Hard Way for the Ladies in the Tank” will also be part of the excitement for all ages. Go to www.BigCatBattle. com for a registration form, which must be returned with the entry fee by June 11 at 5 p.m., either by mail or in person at the Claremore Expo Center Office. The tournament begins on June 12 at 6 p.m. Media sponsor is 98.5 KVOO. Title sponsors are Summers Drilling & Blasting Inc. and Nabatak. Presenting sponsor is Visit Claremore. Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs will present the 2nd place check, and GRDA will present the 3rd place check. Additional sponsors include Melton Dodge, John Parks Energy, Bills Marine of Skiatook, Warren Caterpillar, Medley Company, Tulsa Ford New Holland, Stillwater Milling, BancFirst, Pixley’s Lumber, Wild Country Meats, Value News, Claremore Fire Department, Tri-Star RollOffs, TLC website designs.net and Cimarron Sod. Exhibitors have until June 6 to contact the Claremore Expo Center at (918) 342-5357 to participate in this year’s event.

“Mudcats” star Don “Kat Daddy” Brewer thrilled young fans with his catch at the first northeastern Oklahoma Battle of the Big Cats last year.

HHit the Stampede The Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo takes place May 23-25, 2014. By Lorrie Ward

There are only two things you can do if a stampede hits: run with it or get out of its way. So when the Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo hits Claremore on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, be sure to find a safe place on the sidelines to watch the dust fly as the hooves hit the ground in a thunderous display of man and woman versus nature. David Petty, chairman of this year’s event and member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Executive Council, describes Claremore’s Will Rogers Stampede as “one of the top tier rodeos in the country” and feels it is probably the second largest Oklahoma rodeo behind Guymon. He chuckles and says he “married into” the Will Rogers Stampede Association, as his wife’s grandparents were charter members of the original Round Up Club. But his commitment to preserving the heritage of this 68-year-old event goes well beyond that of a typical in-law. “This is the largest and longest running event in Rogers County next to

Will Rogers Days,” he points out. “And I want to help keep that tradition going.” While tradition is at the heart of this event, David points out that some changes have been necessary to make the event one that continues to draw top level competitors to Claremore. For instance, the

rodeo recently changed stock contractors and now uses Pete Carr Pro Rodeo, which was nominated in 2013 as Rodeo Stock Contractor of the Year at the national level and owns the legendary bucking horse Dirty Jacket. David feels that changing along with the changing times will keep contestant

levels – which will top 600 this year – high. “This is the largest PRCA rodeo on Memorial Day weekend,” says Petty. The Will Rogers Stampede kicks off on Friday night at 8 p.m., with the competition continuing Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. In addition, there will be “slack performances” for extras on Friday morning at 8 a.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. “The rodeo continues to have strong community influence and ties. We use the last night as a memorial to past Will Rogers Stampede participants

and those who have helped in the past,” says Petty. “Last year, we honored Clem McSpadden, Clem Rogers, and Will Rogers.” He points out that area cowboy churches have gotten involved in the Sunday segment, giving musical performances and offering free admission to those who come to the late Sunday afternoon church service and are still there for the 7:30 p.m. opening. As the premier sanctioning body in rodeo, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) crowns its world champions every season at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. For decades, Will Rogers Stampede has been affiliated with ProRodeo, and many legendary world champions have won in Claremore. “The ‘who’s who’ list of national champions who have won the title in Claremore is too long to mention, but includes such legends as Jim Shoulders, Donnie Gay and Trevor Brazile,” adds Petty. New Lynn Riggs Exhibit Showcases Famous Oklahoma Playwright

Learn more about the author of “Green Grow the Lilacs” at the Claremore Museum of History.

By Christopher Davis Decades before anyone had heard of writer-actor Tracy Letts or his award-winning play-turned-movie “August: Osage County,” a talented Cherokee playwright from Claremore propelled Oklahoma into the national spotlight. The playwright was Lynn Riggs, and a new exhibit at the Claremore Museum of History showcases the life and achievements of our state’s first famous playwright. Although Lynn Riggs may not be a household name outside of our community, the legacy he left with his play “Green Grow the Lilacs” reaches far and wide. “Visitors to Claremore frequently ask ‘Who is Lynn Riggs?’ when they see the street signs bearing his name,” said museum docent Barbra Pool, “but once you explain his best-known play became the musical ‘Oklahoma!’ they are intrigued.” Whether you are a student of Oklahoma or Native American history, a theater buff or a fan of classic movies, the professionally designed exhibit, sponsored by RCB Bank, offers something for all, including a completely restored “surrey with fringe on top.” “People tend to be very familiar with ‘Oklahoma!’ and rightly so,” said Pool. “When the musical opened on Broadway in 1943, it was a box office smash, running for 2,212 performances.” The American songwriting duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein won numerous awards for the production, including a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944. In 1955, the movie version won two Academy Awards and

produced a soundtrack album that sold more than two million copies. In 1953, the signature song “Oklahoma!” became our official state song. Lynn Riggs’s talent was not limited to playwriting. He was also a poet, journalist, artist and Hollywood screenwriter. “He had immense talent,” explained Pool. “And the exhibit captures all of it.” After high school, Riggs embarked on an adventure that took him to Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles. He worked a variety of jobs. Some involved writing, which remained his passion. Eventually, he returned to his home state to attend the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in English and immersed himself in music, writing and drama. He also produced his first play and published his first poem. Although he left OU after his junior year due to health reasons, he was already attracting attention as a playwright. One of his first plays earned Riggs a Guggenheim Fellowship, affording him the opportunity to spend a year in France, where he wrote “Green Grow the Lilacs.” Not

unlike other influential southern playwrights, Riggs incorporated the themes, people, and places that he knew growing up. “Lynn Riggs’s Cherokee heritage, his childhood experiences and his family life greatly influenced his writing,” said Pool. “Even in Paris, he was writing about the land and people of rural Oklahoma.” The Claremore Museum of History is located at Gazebo Park at the junction of Will

Rogers Boulevard (Main Street) and Weenonah. The museum is open each Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special viewing times may be arranged for groups. Museum admission is free but a $2 donation per person is appreciated. For more information, contact

Helping the Body Heal Itself drawn and put into a centrifuge that spins the blood at high speeds, extracting the platelets from the other components in the blood. Then this plasma, now packed with a high concentration of PRP will be injected all around the point of injury. The reason this is so important is simply because the process uses the body’s own defense system. When the body is injured, the first thing it does is deliver an army of platelets to the injury site. These platelets not only have growth factors to facilitate healing, but they also attract stem cells, which are critical to the healing process. With PRP injections, a huge concentration of these platelets will be delivered directly to the needed area and will help “jump start” the body’s own injury defense. Dr. Hardage explains that this “jump start” is often badly needed as the body has sometimes learned to ignore a chronic injury and will stop sending extra platelets to the site on its own. An injection of PRP jolts the process into action again. “The human body has enormous healing potential,” Dr. Hardage says. “By using PRP injections, we are getting the body’s attention and making it

want to fix its problem.” He reports that while results are excellent with these treatments, patients should not expect this to be the “quick fix” that many are accustomed to with cortisone injections. “We are not just relieving the pain, we are helping the body to heal itself,” he says. “And that healing takes time.” Dr. Hardage most frequently uses PRP injections on tendon injuries such as tennis elbow and Achilles tendonitis. He describes how one patient, who was a runner, had suffered long with plantar fasciitis, and although had received multiple cortisone injections, experienced no longstanding improvement. The patient received PRP treatments and within six weeks was back to running. Now, over two years later, he is relatively pain free. In fact, athletes are the reason PRP injections became mainstream, as many professional athletes received the injections for injuries and brought PRP to the forefront of treatment options. At first it was one more thing to use in and around chronic tendon injuries, which Dr. Hardage points out are very hard to keep treated. He now uses this treat-

ment on everyone from college football and baseball players to retired people with chronic pain. Dr. Hardage is encouraged and enthusiastic about what the future holds for platelet rich plasma. “I believe PRP and stem cells are not only the future for tendon injuries,” he says. “They hold the future for healing in medicine as well.”

Reignite Your Zeal for Life Zeal for Life Challenge and decided to take a step of faith and join the movement. At the time he was not in the mindset of doing the business; he just knew they needed to take a step to better health and wanted to support his friend as well. Within weeks Will and Jennifer both noticed changes, and Jennifer says, “I saw a pep in my husband’s step again. He was less depressed and had way more energy.” Within 90 days, Jennifer lost over 20 pounds adjusting to the healthier lifestyle that Zeal shares and saw other amazing changes in her health, as did Will. Others noticed changes in them and were asking what they were doing. “We started sharing with everyone we knew in our part time,” says Jennifer. “Within a year our part

time income sharing Zeal surpassed our real jobs, and we were able to retire!” They were able to create a sixfigure income for their family in their part time and have also been able to help 10 other families do the same. “Zurvita has changed every aspect of what we thought was possible,” says Will. “Not only did we experience changes in our health, but also spiritually, improvements in our marriage, and in the end, financially. We now not only have financial freedom but time freedom as well to enjoy family and traveling! Our biggest joy is helping others do the same, and we are now living a passionate and purpose-filled life.” The company’s name Zurvita means “The Risen Life.” It is built on

It was during this time that he learned to work with large budgets. These stores could generate income ranging from $15 million annually in the smallest store to $60 million in the largest store. In addition, he managed between 75 and 200 employees at various stores, depending on each individual store’s sales volume. “I have a lot of experience working with large budgets, as well as adhering to those budgets and being held accountable if I didn’t. If I am elected Rogers County Commissioner, I intend to use that experience to make sure the citizens of Rogers County get the most from their tax

When he learned that commissioners are basically “budgeters,” as he describes it, overseeing the budgets of county road construction and maintenance, the county courthouse, and some aspects of law enforcement budgets, he thought, “I can do this!” Burrows draws his confidence from his work history spanning three decades. Burrows served in the Army National Guard in the 144th Medical Evacuation Hospital through most of the 1980s.
