When we hear the word “spinning,” many may think of an exercise class that gained popularity in recent years. But in Dr. Steve Hardage’s office at Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, “spinning” is an integral part of healing, as it helps create the PRP injections that are revolutionizing

the treatment of chronic pain from injuries. “PRP injections are a new, exciting thing in medicine to help tissues heal,” says Dr. Hardage, who is a primary care physician who specializes in sports medicine at EOOC Claremore with a group of orthopedic physicians. “What’s exciting is

that it uses the good stuff from your own blood to make things want to heal.” PRP stands for platelet rich plasma and it is used to help facilitate the healing of injured musculoskeletal tissue. To garner the needed platelets, a small sample of the patient’s own blood is

Three years ago, if you would have told Jennifer Watkins that she would soon use the word “zeal” to describe her life, she probably would not have believed you. Zeal might

have been something she desired, but it was as far from what she was feeling as the letter “A” is from the letter “Z” in the alphabet. Her husband, Will, who was a mem-

ber of the Oklahoma National Guard for 13 years, had been injured pre-deployment in 2011 and was in the Wounded Warrior Project at the time. Jennifer was working as a realtor, and she felt herself in poor health as well. Both Jennifer and Will were depressed about their physical and financial situation, and it was having a negative effect on their relationship. The couple wanted to change their lives, but they were not sure how to go about it. A public servant: that is what Ron Burrows has worked towards all of his adult working life. Therefore, his recent decision to run for the position of District 3 Rogers County Commissioner seems a natural one. “I view all my job experience as being some sort of public service,” says Burrows, who is running for public office for the first time. “A commissioner is the highest level of

public service in the community.” Burrows’ campaign will emphasize his 30-plus year work history, experience that has given him a solid background in budget processes and team leadership. For the past five years, Burrows has served as the general manager of the Claremore Expo Center, which has seen much growth and improvement under his leadership. “During this time, the number of event days has increased by about

100 days per year, but our staff has stayed the same,” says Burrows. “We’ve managed to keep up with the growth by developing better processes and procedures and working smarter.” Also, the Expo RV Park has doubled its revenues under his management. There’s a saying in Oklahoma when speaking about a person who has a tendency to tell big stories and have no followthrough. We call it “Big Hat, No Cattle.” Often folks have big ideas but don’t back up their talk with concrete actions. Now, there is nothing wrong with being a “dreamer,” but it has long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sit back and let things happen to them. They go out and make things happen. They have a dream, create a plan, take action, and don’t give up. So strive not to be a “drugstore cowboy.” Make every effort to say what you mean and mean what you say. In the end, the only thing we really have is our integrity. Our word, what we speak to ourselves and others, is important. It is really everything we are. Your character is the only thing you have to show others. Here are some ideas for NOT

creating a Big Hat, No Cattle persona: • Shut your mouth. Listening is so much more important that talking. We’ve all heard “You’ve got two ears and one mouth for a reason.” So tell the truth, be authentic and have confidence. But remember that your opinion is just that, an opinion. It is your truth but it may not be someone else’s. • Work Hard. You need to have a good reputation before you can rest on it. The only way to build a good reputation is by working hard and getting results. With friends this means being there for the hard stuff and carrying the load, with business it means delivering on your promises and going the extra mile.

• Be Humble. When you have finally gotten to where you were getting to, don’t be boastful, flaunt it, and try to use it for power. Realize that you didn’t get there without a lot of help from partners who believed in you, from clients and employees that allowed you to help them achieve what they achieved, and from just the grace of God. Know who helped you and how they helped you, and don’t forget to thank them fully and often. Be grateful. The daughter-in-law/motherin-law team –co-owners of the boutique – had been talking about starting their own business for quite a while. “Finally,” says mother-in-law Patty, “we decided to do it.” Both women love decorating and fashion. Patty reveals that each fixture in the store was once a piece of furniture. “We don’t have typical store fixtures,” she says. “We used old furniture pieces that we repurposed.” Old desks, dressers, bookcases, tables and even doors have been transformed into beautiful fixtures to

May Is Tennis Month! The Serve for Youth tennis tournament will be held May 30-June 1. By Liz Cary

If you enjoy tennis at any level, consider playing in the fifth annual Serve for Youth tennis tournament in Claremore, Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1. In 2010, a well-known Claremore tennis player and local tennis coordinator, Dian Russell, passed away. Many of her family and friends gathered together to play tennis in her honor and raise money to benefit Volunteers for Youth. Last year, the event had about 40 participants, and this year the tournament coordinators would welcome even more tennis players for the tournament. This tournament is a doubles-only tournament held at the Claremore High School tennis courts, located at 1410 E. Stuart Roosa. There are women’s, men’s and mixed doubles draws. Cost is $25 a person or $50 for a doubles team, with proceeds benefitting Volunteers for Youth. Each participant will receive a Serve for Youth visor or water bottle. Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Project works to reduce substance abuse among our youth, with a particular emphasis on underage drinking and prescription drug misuse. U-Turn Academy targets Rogers County youth who are on long-term school suspension from any school in the county. Volunteers for Youth participates in the Drug Free Communities project and provides education in drug and alcohol prevention for teens. RRound-Up Your Change Safenet Services’ annual campaign collects coins to help provide shelter and counseling to victims of domestic abuse.

By Lorrie Ward Sometimes when we hear that change jingling around in our pockets or purses, we do not give it much thought. After all, those are just coins, right? How could mere pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters make any difference in a world where even a dollar bill is considered of little consequence? But things can really add up when those little coins are thrown together into a united purpose – and that’s what the organizers of Safenet Services’ annual Round-Up counted on

The cold hard fact is that as soon as you drive your new car off the lot, it depreciates in value. How much it depreciates varies from car to car depending on a number of factors. During the term of a loan, many car owners find themselves upside-down, meaning they owe more than the vehicle’s insured value. This is especially true when the car is financed for more than 90% of the purchased price or its value. Your financial situation can potentially turn south if your car is totaled in an accident before your loan balance levels out with the value of your vehicle. Good news, there is a solution – Guaranteed Auto Protection or GAP*. A GAP policy can be taken out on new, used and refinanced vehicles, motorcycles, boats and RVs. It helps in the event of a loss, covering the difference between your car’s

cash value (primary insurance company settlement) and the outstanding balance on your loan, according to Kevi Zufall, AVP, consumer loan officer, RCB Bank. “This is a little known product that can offer peace of mind for many borrowers,” said Zufall. “Without GAP insurance, if your car is totaled and you still owe more than your car is worth, you could owe hundreds to possibly thousands of dollars out of pocket. By Carol Beck-Round Battle of the Big Cats: Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown willreturn to the Claremore Expo Center on June 14. With last year’s premiere event surpassing everyone’s expectations, organizer Kaleb Summers is excited about the upcoming tournament. While Summers was hoping for a good turnout for the inaugural event, he was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming response last year. Offering over $10,000 in prize money – the largest amount in Oklahoma noodling competitions – 132 teams from Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Iowa competed during the 48-hour tournament. Summers says this year’s event should be as big as ever with more prize money, new competition rules and two new events. One of the most important rule changes specifies that all residents and nonresidents who enter a team must compete inside Oklahoma’s borders in a state lake or designated water system. “This means no teams can go across the Oklahoma state borders, catch their fish and bring them back across the state line to check in at the tournament,” says Summers. Another important change involves team numbers and entry fees. Last year’s entry fee was $50 per person, with the winner taking home the top prize for the largest catfish. With new rules in place, a three-man team pays a $150 entry fee. Instead of the top prize going to the largest catfish, the heaviest three-fish stringer will nab the top prize of $5,000. The second place

team will win $2,500 cash, while $1,500 will be awarded to the third place finishers. In addition, the 13th place stringer will receive $500. Two new categories have been added, with a $500 bounty going to the team with the largest Big Blue Cat and another $500 bounty going to the team with the largest Big Flathead. “We want to keep this tournament on a level playing field,” says Summers, “so we will be administering polygraph tests to a random selection of winners. Because of the large prize money involved, we want to make sure no one loses sight of what this tournament is all about. Sometimes, when a lot of money is involved, it can get in the way of morals. We have put these new rules in place to guarantee the continued success of this event.” In addition, a 5K Mud Cat Run is being added to the festivities.Cosponsored by the Claremore Fire Department, the run will begin and end at the Expo. HHit the Stampede The Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo takes place May 23-25, 2014. By Lorrie Ward

There are only two things you can do if a stampede hits: run with it or get out of its way. So when the Will Rogers Stampede Rodeo hits Claremore on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, be sure to find a safe place on the sidelines to watch the dust fly as the hooves hit the ground in a thunderous display of man and woman versus nature. David Petty, chairman of this year’s event and member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Executive Council, describes Claremore’s Will Rogers Stampede as “one of the top tier rodeos in the country” and feels it is probably the second largest Oklahoma rodeo behind Guymon. He chuckles and says he “married into” the Will Rogers Stampede Association, as his wife’s grandparents were charter members of the original Round Up Club. But his commitment to preserving the heritage of this 68-year-old event goes well beyond that of a typical in-law. “This is the largest and longest running event in Rogers County next to

Will Rogers Days,” he points out. “And I want to help keep that tradition going.” While tradition is at the heart of this event, David points out that some changes have been necessary to make the event one that continues to draw top level competitors to Claremore. For instance, the

rodeo recently changed stock contractors and now uses Pete Carr Pro Rodeo, which was nominated in 2013 as Rodeo Stock Contractor of the Year at the national level and owns the legendary bucking horse Dirty Jacket. David feels that changing along with the changing times will keep contestant

levels – which will top 600 this year – high. “This is the largest PRCA rodeo on Memorial Day weekend,” says Petty. The Will Rogers Stampede kicks off on Friday night at 8 p.m., with the competition continuing Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. In addition, there will be “slack performances” for extras on Friday morning at 8 a.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. “The rodeo continues to have strong community influence and ties. We use the last night as a memorial to past Will Rogers Stampede participants

and those who have helped in the past,” says Petty. “Last year, we honored Clem McSpadden, Clem Rogers, and Will Rogers.” He points out that area cowboy churches have gotten involved in the Sunday segment, giving musical performances and offering free admission to those who come to the late Sunday afternoon church service and are still there for the 7:30 p.m. opening. As the premier sanctioning body in rodeo, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) crowns its world champions every season at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. For decades, Will Rogers Stampede has been affiliated with ProRodeo, and many legendary world champions have won in Claremore. “The ‘who’s who’ list of national champions who have won the title in Claremore is too long to mention, but includes such legends as Jim Shoulders, Donnie Gay and Trevor Brazile,” adds Petty. New Lynn Riggs Exhibit Showcases Famous Oklahoma Playwright

Learn more about the author of “Green Grow the Lilacs” at the Claremore Museum of History.

By Christopher Davis Decades before anyone had heard of writer-actor Tracy Letts or his award-winning play-turned-movie “August: Osage County,” a talented Cherokee playwright from Claremore propelled Oklahoma into the national spotlight. The playwright was Lynn Riggs, and a new exhibit at the Claremore Museum of History showcases the life and achievements of our state’s first famous playwright. Although Lynn Riggs may not be a household name outside of our community, the legacy he left with his play “Green Grow the Lilacs” reaches far and wide. “Visitors to Claremore frequently ask ‘Who is Lynn Riggs?’ when they see the street signs bearing his name,” said museum docent Barbra Pool, “but once you explain his best-known play became the musical ‘Oklahoma!’ they are intrigued.” Whether you are a student of Oklahoma or Native American history, a theater buff or a fan of classic movies, the professionally designed exhibit, sponsored by RCB Bank, offers something for all, including a completely restored “surrey with fringe on top.” “People tend to be very familiar with ‘Oklahoma!’ and rightly so,” said Pool. “When the musical opened on Broadway in 1943, it was a box office smash, running for 2,212 performances.” The American songwriting duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein won numerous awards for the production, including a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944. In 1955, the movie version won two Academy Awards and

produced a soundtrack album that sold more than two million copies. In 1953, the signature song “Oklahoma!” became our official state song. Lynn Riggs’s talent was not limited to playwriting. He was also a poet, journalist, artist and Hollywood screenwriter. “He had immense talent,” explained Pool. “And the exhibit captures all of it.” After high school, Riggs embarked on an adventure that took him to Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles. He worked a variety of jobs. Some involved writing, which remained his passion. Eventually, he returned to his home state to attend the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in English and immersed himself in music, writing and drama. He also produced his first play and published his first poem. Although he left OU after his junior year due to health reasons, he was already attracting attention as a playwright. One of his first plays earned Riggs a Guggenheim Fellowship, affording him the opportunity to spend a year in France, where he wrote “Green Grow the Lilacs.” Not

unlike other influential southern playwrights, Riggs incorporated the themes, people, and places that he knew growing up. “Lynn Riggs’s Cherokee heritage, his childhood experiences and his family life greatly influenced his writing,” said Pool. “Even in Paris, he was writing about the land and people of rural Oklahoma.” The Claremore Museum of History is located at Gazebo Park at the junction of Will

He describes how one patient, who was a runner, had suffered long with plantar fasciitis, and although had received multiple cortisone injections, experienced no longstanding improvement. The patient received PRP treatments and within six weeks was back to running. Now, over two years later, he is relatively pain free. In fact, athletes are the reason PRP injections became mainstream, as many professional athletes received the injections for injuries and brought PRP to the forefront of treatment options.
