Prepare for the Dog Days of Summer Beth Holmes and staff offer the “pawfect” solution to old winter coats and springtime mud. By Christopher Davis

Spring has arrived, leaving behind snow-patched, frozen yards. Of course, pets seem to enjoy thawing yards, taking every opportunity to indulge in the puddle-wonderful world. When, inevitably, your dog or cat runs up to you covered in springtime mud, don’t despair. Beth’s Pawfection Dog Grooming is a phone call or email away. Located conveniently at 2208 S. Hwy. 66 in Claremore, just behind OklaHomes Realty, Beth’s Pawfection Grooming offers

a wide range of services for cats and dogs of any size. Whether your pet is a shaggy mutt with personality or a best in show princess, Beth Holmes and her staff will keep your pet safe and calm, returning him or her happy, clean and ready to cuddle. With summer just around the corner, owners can expect shedding to begin. Help your pet ditch their winter coat with a Furminator de-shedding treatment. While preparing for summer, you may consider a (continued on page 28)

Car Country’s Claremore location is celebrating its one year anniversary, and the sales team invites you to see for yourself what many already know. The dealership offers a massive selection of high-quality, pre-owned vehicles at affordable prices and in-house financing available for those with credit challenges. Since first opening in Bixby six years ago, Car Country rapidly earned a reputation for reliability and inclusive financing. Over the years, the dealership expanded to four more locations – Bartlesville, Sapulpa, Broken Arrow, and most recently, Claremore. Because the Car

Country locations share inventory, customers can easily use their website to view what’s available ahead of visiting a sales lot. Any car featured on their website can be brought to the Claremore lot for in-person viewing and a test drive. Car Country’s large, shared inventory is just one way in which the dealership sets itself apart from the competition. Their ability to finance customers with bad credit is unique – especially when the high quality of their inventory is taken into account. As a “buy here, pay here” dealer, customers discover that purchasing from (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

HOW TO GET RICH THE OLD FASHIONED WAY BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

This idea that somehow you can get rich quick without much skill, effort, or time and without taking any risk is just plain bunk! I have witnessed some pretty creative “crazy thinking” by some seemingly smart folks. Here are a few of the most common “get rich quick” ideas I hear from people. I’ll win the lottery/at the casino! I see scores of folks buying lottery tickets that don’t have the money to pay their bills. I hear of friends and clients with big winnings at the casino who give it all back the next week. The reality is that the odds are very, very low that you will win the lottery. The casino is a MONEY MAKING OPERATION. They are large and luxurious because they are in the business of making money for the house. Their house! In the meantime, you may be spending money you don’t have on this crazy pie-in-the-sky win instead of focusing on reducing your debt and paying your bills. I’ll just sue somebody! This is one get-rich-quick idea that really bugs me. Not only is it trying to become rich without having to work for it but it is also at the expense of someone else. This is not to mention the pain, stress, and energy of such an endeavor that could be channeled into a much more positive direction of learning a skill and making efforts to personally improve you. (Now don’t start hating on me. I am well aware that there are times that it is appropriate and necessary to take legal action. That is not what I am

always makes me want to drag out the embalming fluid. You are responsible for earning and saving enough money to retire. Do not find yourself working until you are 75 because your 95 year old mother is still out there boot scootin’ around.

talking about here.) I’ll do a work from home business that promises overnight success! Internet and network marketing scams abound. These game plans usually make claims that you will be rich within a few months. Often you are told that getting others signed up under you for the program will further your cause without you having to work for it. I hate to say that in the last 27 years, we have gotten bitten by this snake a couple of times ourselves. Watch out for things that sound too good to be true. They probably are. (Once again, don’t start hating. There are some really great network marketing companies out there. It is possible to be successful doing them but you can’t omit the work part.) I’ll inherit it! When I have prospective clients come in to do their financial and retirement planning and their primary strategy for having enough money to retire is based on waiting for someone else to die (usually their parents), it is

I’ll invest in Penny Stocks/IPO’s/Obscure Investments and make millions! At least once a month, I have someone call about a penny stock they want to buy, an IPO they want to get ahead of, or some other obscure “Iraqi Dinar currency” or other strange investment idea. Most of the time the caller is looking to put in very little capital and take large risk in the hope that they will make millions overnight. This is not an investment strategy; this is more like the casino strategy that I spoke about earlier. In the end there is no substitute for hard work, controlling your spending, saving early and regularly, and making good investment decisions. These are personal choices over which we all have control. Remember that wealth preservation is more important than just accumulation so choose your advisor and your investments wisely. TTake a Closer Look Advanced Vision Center & Eyewear Boutique offers plenty to see during your eye exam experience.

By Christopher Davis

One does not need 20/20 vision to see that Advanced Vision Center & Eyewear Boutique is special. The clinic, located at 860 S Lynn Riggs Blvd., boasts an extensive selection of frames, a mini eyewear museum, and an unforgettable décor that immediately encourages you to take a closer look all around. Dr. Abby OverstreetHogle, owner, has invested

her life in the practice, and wants to help all her patients to be able to take a closer look. “I love my job,” says Dr. Overstreet-Hogle, who admits she works long hours every day at Advanced Vision Center. The practice is an expression of who she is: the aesthetic, technology, frames selection and staff are all hand-picked by her. “We’re

like a bunch of sisters,” she says of her staff. “And, with all the relationships I build with my customers, it’s not work.” This approach to a happy work environment permeates the clinic. It is obvious that patients have caught on. “We are busier than ever,” says Dr. Overstreet-Hogle, which is why it is wise to make an appointment. But Advanced Vision Center is ready to welcome new patients to their exam room, and they anticipate a busy spring. This is the time of year when people prepare for their vacations, schedule their yearly eye exam and seek out the newest styles. As summer approaches, now is the time to prepare for the sunshine. Advanced Vision Center carries the latest styles from the best brands. Dr. Overstreet-Hogle prides herself on her eye boutique’s wide selection of sunglasses, which includes frames by Coach, Gucci, Maui Jim, Oakley, Harley Davidson, Ray Ban and more. Patients at Advanced Vision Center not only enjoy a vast selection and great care;

they also gain a doctor who cares about much more than what lens prescription to write. From the moment patients walk through the door, Dr. Overstreet-Hogle and her staff make every effort to ensure the best and most thorough care. “I triple check lens choices in the exam room,” says Dr. Overstreet-Hogle. Patients often comment that they are never shuffled through the office; Advanced Vision Center takes time with each patient. “I form relationships with my patients,” she continues. “I treat them like family.” Advanced Vision Center has invested in the best eye care technology, and the doctor and her staff use it effectively and efficiently. Digital images allow staff and doctor to catch important conditions commonly overlooked, as well as easily store and retrieve patient files. In fact, Dr. OverstreetHogle’s reputation for thoroughness is based on the many patient stories seemingly taken from the emergency room. She calmly and skillfully tends to urgent care patients sent to her from nearby factories. Foreign body removal and other urgent care issues regularly present at her clinic. Retinal bleeding, blood clots and other tell-tale symptoms of serious health concerns are routinely caught by Dr. Overstreet-Hogle. At least once per month she discovers

a serious issue and refers a patient to the hospital for treatment. For all the attention she has dedicated to the latest style trends, technology and care, Dr. Overstreet-Hogle is just as invested in pediatric eye care. Having specialized in pediatric optometry in college, her boutique offers a kids corner with games and DVDs to pass the time, along with a broad selection of kids frames. The exam room is equipped with special charts for young children who may not know all their numbers and letters. This, along with the welcoming environment of the clinic, encourages children to enjoy their vision exams. Advanced Vision Center and Eyewear Boutique is the sort of clinic one expects to find downtown in a city. With their frame selection, friendly staff and Dr. OverstreetHogle taking the time to listen to patients and thoroughly examine eyes, Advanced Vision Center is a great choice for all your visual needs.

BBuilt to Last Quality Derksen portable buildings are made by Oklahoma craftsmen.

By Carol Beck-Round

Lewis and Patricia Armbrister, long-time Rogers County residents, are no strangers to working with people in the business world. In fact, for the couple, that is what makes doing business so enjoyable – working with people. “I like making new friends and meeting people in the area,” says Patricia. In addition to their longtime fencing business, the Armbristers began selling Derksen portable buildings

in 2007. After researching several portable building companies, they settled on Derksen because of its quality construction. Pressure-treated materials, reinforced doors, sturdy tresses and other options available on Derksen buildings led the Armbristers to set up shop on their corner lot at Reavis and Country Club Road in Claremore over six years ago. Derksen’s portable

buildings, sheds, garages and cabins are hand-built the oldfashioned way in the Mennonite craftsmanship tradition. All Derksen buildings also include an industry-leading warranty on their treated wood strand technology siding, which resists fungal rot and decay, termites, splitting, cracking and warping in a rich cedar grain texture. Derksen’s siding is not made of wafer, chip or particleboard.

Lewis and Patricia Armbrister, long-time Rogers County residents, own Derksen Portable Buildings.

rogers county

In addition, the buildings include 2x4 wall studs doubled under siding seams, 2x6 treated floor joists into notched 4x6 treated skids, and 2x4 reinforced doors designed to seal out rain and key-locked for protection. “Since we began selling the buildings several years ago,” says Patricia, “Derksen has added new styles, sizes and options.” With sizes ranging from 8x12 up to the newest size, a 16x40, customers can also choose from different styles of barns, cabins, cottages, utility sheds, and garages, including options like lofts, windows, doors and gable roofs. Newer options also include a basic electric package, wall and ceiling insulation, inside paneling and pre-finished flooring. “Customers can now choose to have their building painted or pressure-treated and the price is the same,” she adds. “In the past, painted buildings cost more.” Whether you choose a shingled roof or one made of metal, the price is the same. Shingled roofs come with a 30-year warranty while the 29-gauge standard metal roofs come with a 40-year warranty. When selecting your custom-built portable building, there are now more options than before, according to Patricia. “With custom-made doors and windows, you choose how many and where you want them placed.” Door options include

Page 7

solids, nine-lite doors, 11-lite French doors (set), as well as roll-up garage doors in two different sizes. Windows are metal, single-glazed, double hung units with grids to give the appearance of multiple panes of glass. Another option for the customer is a built-on-site building. “With a building built on your site, some of these options like the basic electric package are not available,” she adds. With Derksen’s buy-orlease program and no credit check, customers can save money when compared to renting at a storage facility long-term. “Buying or leasing a Derksen building is hasslefree,” says Patricia. “You can lease a building up to 60 months.” There is no penalty for early payoff, and delivery and setup are available at no extra charge. Buildings are available for viewing at the Armbrister’s lot at 1401 Reavis Rd., but customers do have many options, many without extra cost, such as where windows and doors are placed. “I’m available to discuss options so you can decide which building and which options best fit your needs,” says Patricia. PParty Like the Irish Mark your calendars for Claremore Main Street’s two upcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. By Cassie Woods

Claremore Main Street is gearing up for its annual St. Patrick’s Day events. The first will be an evening street

party on Friday, March 14, followed by a lunch event on Monday, March 17. The Friday night event

will feature entertainment by the Vintage Wildflowers, the Goode Academy of Irish Dancers, Hells Fringe Border

Timothy O’Brian’s Celtic Cheer is just one of the fun bands who will be providing entertainment at the Claremore Main Street St. Paddy’s Day Street Party on March 14. Band members include (L to R) Timothy Wantland, Brian McGuire, Bob Hawkins, Carl McGuire, Bryan Spencer, Julia Wantland and David Robinson. (Not pictured: Watson Wantland.)

Band and Timothy O’Brian’s Celtic Cheer. Food, including the traditional St. Paddy’s day favorite of corn beef and cabbage, and beverages will be available for purchase. And there will be lots of Irish memorabilia for attendees to browse. The free, familyfriendly event will be in the 400 block of West Will Rogers Boulevard from 6 to 9 p.m. “It is basically just a fun party for the whole family,” said Cindy Bissett, Claremore Main Street director. “We love to see all the faces of our community get out and enjoy the holiday spirit while supporting the great downtown businesses and the Main Street initiatives.” On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, Claremore Main Street will host its second holiday event, the traditional bangers and mash lunch. Volunteers will be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Claremore Progress parking lot, located at 315 W. Will Rogers Blvd. “This event is always a fun one as well,” said Bissett. “We invite

all of those who will be in Claremore during the lunch hours to come out and celebrate with us.” The bangers and mash lunch consists of the meal, a drink and, of course, dessert. The cost for lunch is $5 for those who wear their official Main Street support T-shirt. Those shirts are available for purchase in several of the downtown stores or at the Claremore Main Street office. They are good forever and provide discounted rates to many of the Main Street events. Lunch can be purchased for $6 without a Tshirt. “We will be hosting a sidewalk parade as part of the lunchtime event,” said Bissett. “Patrons are encouraged to browse our downtown shops during their lunch hour and register for our great giveaways.” All of the proceeds raised at the two Claremore Main Street St. Paddy’s Day events will be used to fund new Main Street projects, such as a new website and branding campaign and new flags for the decorative light poles.

Be Responsible with Your Prescription Drugs Rogers County Drug Task Force provides free lock boxes for residents who use prescription opiates.

By Carol Beck-Round

Prescription drug abuse is the nation’s fastest-growing drug problem. The problem is so critical that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified it as an epidemic. Rogers County is not immune. In Rogers County alone, there were 68 confirmed opiate overdose deaths between 1997 and 2007. Joining forces, the Healthy Community Partnership and the Rogers County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force are working together to address the problem. Through an Oklahoma Department of Mental Health grant, a prevention program was formed in March of 2012 to create and implement a strategic plan to address prescription drug abuse in Rogers County. The task force is a subgroup of Healthy Community Partnership, a coalition in Claremore formed to address prescription drug abuse among youth, and focuses on abuse among adults in Rogers County. The grant has allowed for the hiring of Teresa Carnes as the strategic prevention

framework and state incentive grant coordinator for Rogers County. “I am a certified prevention specialist,” says Carnes, who has undergone extensive training. Since the grant was implemented, the task force has added two drop-off locations for unused medications. Locations include the Rogers County Sheriff’s Department, Claremore Police Department, Chelsea Police Department, Inola Police Department and Catoosa Police Department. “Our goal is to add one more drop-off location in the county,” she adds. “We work closely with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics to create more awareness of this growing problem and to create the drop-off locations, which must be in a police station.” In an effort to combat the abuse of opiate drugs – which are only one class of abused prescription drugs – the task force has created a new strategy to encourage individuals who have been prescribed these kinds of drugs, including hydrocodone, oxycodone and fentanyal, to keep their drugs

under lock and key. In August of 2013, the task force began providing free medical lock boxes to individuals who are required to take opiate drugs for medical problems. The boxes are available in three different sizes – small, medium and a larger fingerprint safe – and can be bolted down to keep someone from walking away with your prescription drugs and busting open the metal box off-site. “While they are free for those with opiate drug prescriptions, they are a good idea for anyone who wants to keep their prescription drugs locked up and away from children,” she adds. Approximately 40 Rogers County individuals have already taken advantage of the free program and now have lock boxes to keep their opiate prescription drugs from getting into the wrong hands. “People don’t realize how easy it is to get addicted to prescription drugs,” says Carnes. “It can start innocently with someone, like a child or grandchild getting into the drugs, and lead to addiction and eventually

Holding one of the free prescription lock boxes, Amber Brassfield with the Claremore Police Department is also on the Rogers County Drug Force, which encourages citizens to be responsible with their prescription drugs.

death,” Carnes adds. “It’s best to keep them locked up and not have the temptation available.” The latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that more than 70 percent of those who abused prescription pain relievers got them from friends or relatives, while only approximately five percent got them from a drug dealer or over the Internet. Statistics also reveal that there has been a 402 percent increase in the milligram-per-

person use of prescription opioids in the United States from 1997 to 2007.

Make a Difference M in a Child’s Life Oklahoma is currently in great need of foster parents. By Lorrie Ward

A little over a year ago, things changed for foster care in Oklahoma with the privatization of the system. Since that time, Department of Human Services has contracted with TFI Family Connections to recruit and retain foster homes in Oklahoma. But one thing has not changed: the urgent need for families to host foster children. “There is a huge, huge need for foster parents across Oklahoma,” says Jason Cecil, TFI’s director of regional recruitment services. Jason reports that in Rogers County alone, there are 85 kids in custody who have been pulled from situations of abuse or neglect and only 14 available, non-relative foster homes. Tulsa County has 1,500 children and only 233 available non-relative foster homes. “As you can see from these numbers, there is a huge gap between the number of kids needing homes and available foster families,” says Jason.

DHS concentrates on keeping foster children within their own communities so that they can work with the biological families in order to reunite them. But because the state’s limited financial resources often make accomplishing this difficult, they contract part of the process to TFI, who recruits, retains and manages the foster homes, assigning workers to monitor the care children are given in the home. After background checks and home assessments are completed, foster parents are extensively trained through classes, and Jason reports that TFI will soon start a new series of classes soon. “We will go to the families wherever we have the best response,” he says. Jason wants people to know that foster parenting can be a remarkably rewarding experience, as participants can make a lasting impact in the lives of the children, regardless of how short term

the stay. Mark Ogle of the Claremore area American Red Cross and his wife stand as testament to this fact. The Ogles were active foster parents starting in 1997 and continuing through 2010, when they took a hiatus as the demands of raising their children required their full attention. “We were active foster parents for 13 years and hosted 76 foster children over that period of time,” says Mark, who recalls that even though some of the children were only in their home for a short period of time, they all became like family. If potential foster parents feel uncertain about the process, Mark encourages them to give DHS, TFI, or the Rogers County Foster Care Association a call with questions and to take the foster parent training. “Going through the training helps families understand the process and answers any questions they might have,” says

Director of Regional Recruitment Services Jason Cecil, TFI Family Connections.

Mark. “Although my wife and I are not currently active foster parents with four children of our own at home, we plan on getting involved again in the future,” he adds. “It is one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever done.”

HHome Buying Basics “Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial.

By Kenneth Wohl, RCB Bank VP Mortgage Buying a home can be an intimidating process, but with a little knowledge under your belt, you can better understand the process and become a stronger borrower. Here some things you should know before you buy.

Obtain a pre-qualification from your lender: Before you begin house hunting, identify the prices you can afford with a reputable local bank. Obtaining a letter from them will help you become more knowledgeable about your future loan and

Learning the basics to better understand the mortgage process. Pictured: Roger Evans, RCB Bank lender.

make you a stronger borrower with bargaining position with the seller, showing them you are a serious buyer. Choose a Realtor: You want to find one that’s knowledgeable and professional. They should be familiar with the area you are interested in and willing to listen to your wants. I would probably ask them for references from former clients of theirs. Your mortgage lender may be able to provide some reputable recommendations. Shop: Discuss with your significant other and/or your family members what type and size of home fits your needs. Write down a wish list of details you would like as well as what you don’t, so your realtor can narrow down the options before you go out looking at homes that would not work. Make an offer: Once you find THE home, you and your real-estate agent will write a contract with your offer to the seller including price, inclusions, and closing date. The seller can counter to your offer changing your

previous offer until all parties agree or contract falls through. Fully apply for loan: It’s now time to finalize your loan. You can now lock in your loan and determine final selections of terms and mortgage insurance premium choices. You will now sign the formal application and possibly provide more updated documentation to the lender that might have expired since the prequalification. Home Inspection: This is typically ordered by your realtor with your approval. The inspection will provide a thorough look at the safety and functionality of all working parts of the home. This should provide you the information to decide on continuing with the purchase transaction or stopping it based on negative findings. Appraisal: The appraisal is required by the lender and ordered by them as well. This provides a formal evaluation of the home’s market value. This could help you from overpaying for your home. Final Underwriting Approval: All loan conditions have been met and approved by the underwriter. Immediately following this approval, closing instructions are sent by your lender to the title company to derive the final dollar amount that you will need at closing including

Page 13

down payment and closing fees. Closing: The closing agent (title company) coordinates and distributes the funds and paperwork as well as the ownership of the property. You are now the proud owner of a home! RCB Bank’s loan officers are more than happy to answer any questions you might have about mortgages or the home buying process, even if you are not a customer. PPlumbing with Purpose Attendees will have the opportunity to win a free tank-less water heater from Half Moon Plumbing at the Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show.

By Christopher Davis

“My father was a plumber and I started working for him before I graduated high school,” says Dustin Mitchell, owner of Half Moon Plumbing. “I wanted to own

my own business and incorporate my own philosophy and values.” Mitchell’s business represents a continuation of his family’s trade and a commitment to his core

Dustin Mitchell, owner of Half Moon Plumbing.

principles, and his community has responded positively to his contributions. For the first time this year, the family-owned business will have a booth at the Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show, which runs March 21 through 23 at the Claremore Expo Center. The show’s theme is “Improve Yours.” Mitchell has taken the theme to heart, and will be having a giveaway for a Navien tankless water heater. “Navien has designed their water heaters to be compatible with existing systems, making installations much easier.” Such an upgrade to your plumbing system will improve energy efficiency and ensure your showers do not give you the cold shoulder. Mitchell keeps up with trends in plumbing innovation, and easily explains nuances to customers. He grew up watching his dad work before joining him in high school, and soon after graduating Mitchell earned his contracting and master

plumbing licenses in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Mitchell strives to incorporate his personal values into his business, and it shows. His mission – “to provide plumbing excellence through manners, methods and materials” – is a refreshing declaration of thoroughness. Half Moon prides itself on delivering “plumbing with a purpose,” and adheres to several core values unique to the company. The first is to work as unto the Lord. Next is to be a blessing, and not a burden, to customers. Another is to be without excuse in failure. A fourth core value is to provide charity to those without means. Finally, the business remembers always that to whom much is given, much is required. With so much attention devoted to hard work and building quality relationships, it is no wonder Half Moon Plumbing has been successful since opening in 2007. The team at Half Moon Plumbing serves residential and commercial plumbing needs throughout the Owasso and Claremore area. They always do their best to minimize time spent in the house. Half Moon trucks are huge and full of supplies to increase effeciency, and they are prepared to handle a wide range of plumbing issues. Services include repair and maintenance of plumb-

Page 15

ing systems, as well as upgrades. Whether a customer needs a simple fix to an existing system or a major replacement during a remodel, Half Moon will deliver the excellent service you deserve. Their reputation speaks for itself and suggests they are polite and professional, and provide the type of polished craftsmanship the commercial properties demand. Do an online search of plumbers in Owasso or Claremore and check out their reviews. Some of the large-scale commercial clients Half Moon has provided services for include Olive Garden, Genghis Grill and DaVita Dialysis Center. With strong core values and a commitment to excellent service and materials, Half Moon Plumbing is among the leaders in plumbing services in the area. Be sure to stop by their booth at the Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show, and enter for your chance to win a tankless water heater. VVoted Best in Rogers County Remodelers and builders turn to Harmony Star Marble for their kitchen and bathroom needs.

By Carol Beck-Round

Harmony Star Marble – voted Rogers County Reader’s Choice for the best marble company in 2013 – is celebrating 10 years in business at its current location with an anniversary sale. To celebrate, the company is offering its clients a choice of a 10 percent discount off their entire order or a free kitchen sink. Owner Rex Marsh has been involved in the manufacturing, fabrication and installation of cultured marble and granite countertops, showers and bathtubs for almost 35 years. In 2004, he opened his own business located east of Claremore.

With 25 years of experience in the industry, Rex decided to open Harmony Star Marble to cater to builders and home remodelers in the Rogers County area. However, his company’s reputation for excellence has earned him repeat business from Tulsa, Mayes County, Grand Lake, Skiatook and Broken Arrow as well as Rogers County. The company carries four different products at one location. “We offer cultured marble, Portofino marble, manufactured stone and granite from the least expensive to the high end,” says Rex.

“This is what sets us apart from the competition. You can get everything you want right here, including sinks.” You don’t need to travel from one business to another if you are remodeling your bathroom or kitchen or building a new home. “From the smallest job to the biggest job, whether it is one vanity top or a whole house, we can work with you to complete your project,” he adds. The family-owned business with six employees, who have been with Harmony Star Marble since it opened, believes in treating its customers right. “I treat every-

one with honesty. I want my customers to be happy when the job is done,” he says. “We have a good rating with the BBB and with local people so we get a lot of referrals. And, if there is a problem, we take care of it. We’ve been asked to fix problems that another company created but would not come back and fix.” If you are getting ready to remodel or build a new home, Harmony Star Marble can provide you with a variety of options. You can view samples in their showroom, but if you don’t find what you want, Rex offers customers an opportunity to select something else directly from one of their three stone warehouses in Tulsa. In addition to many countertop, shower and tub choices, customers can choose from several countertop edges. But the choices don’t end there, as customers may also choose from an under mount sink, drop-in or a farm sink. “We can also special order a sink and install it for a customer,” he says. “What sets us apart from stores who don’t specialize in countertops, showers and tubs, but do offer some of the same products as us, is

that we don’t use different subs on every job,” says Rex. “Our employees do all of the work, and our turn-around time on a job is a week to 10 days from the time an order is placed.” The business can do it all – from start to finish – including the plumbing, because two local master plumbers are available to help bring the job to completion. Harmony Star Marble specializes in custom, quality work to turn your bathroom or kitchen into a work of art that you can be proud to show off to your family and friends. If you’re thinking of remodeling or beginning a new home construction, give Rex a call. “We are committed to quality work,” he says, “and we warranty everything we sell and install.”

Melanie Hasty Grant and Ken Grant are the owners of Waterstone Private Wealth Management in Owasso. “Milestones – anniversaries, birthdays and New Year’s – give us reason to reflect upon our past plus look ahead with hope and opportunity,” says Melanie. “We’ve been honored to serve clients and our community for 15 years and

are blessed by how they have touched our lives.” The couple feels humbled and privileged by the incredible clients that made the choice to work with Waterstone. Markets over the past two decades have been a wild ride, accentuating the need for expert advice. “While no one can predict the future,” said Melanie, “the next 15

years will likely present similar challenges.” Clients rely upon Melanie’s and Ken’s trained authority in the financial field. They have been contributors and guests on multiple national media outlets including CNBC’s PowerLunch, Fox Business, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and Market Watch Radio. Locally, they have frequently been interviewed by Tulsa World, Fox 23 and Good Day Tulsa. Melanie writes the Money Maven column for Value News and was an LPL Chairman’s Club Award Winner in 2013, an honor bestowed to the top 10 percent of advisors nationwide. She was recognized in the Wall Street Journal as a Top Oklahoma Business Woman by the National Republican Committee and was invited to attend The Barron’s Top Women Advisors Conference. “The client relationships we build are more than financial numbers and charts,” said Melanie. “We witness clients’ life goals, dreams and hopes for their future. I am in awe of our clients’ courage and perseverance to create extraordinary lives.” Melanie

and Ken believe they are here to serve others. Twenty-seven years ago, while dating at Southern Methodist University, they established goals to help others. “Those dreams have come true,” said Melanie, “and that’s why we’re driven to involvement in our community and to help out wherever we can.” Melanie has served the following: Owasso Education Foundation, Mental Health Association of Tulsa, Owasso Community Resources (then Network Owasso), Owasso Community Center, Rotary, Owasso Character Council, and the Arts and Humanities Council. Melanie’s financial career began in 1999 as an advisor at Edward Jones. One year later she was running her office and was volunteer regional trainer for new advisors. “I loved helping them learn the business and understand the importance of helping others,” she said. Melanie founded Waterstone Private Wealth Management in January of 2003. Ken joined Waterstone in 2004 and oversees investment research and analysis, strategic asset management and trading. “Melissa Bowlin

joined us last year. She has 10 years experience in the financial industry and is an answered prayer to our organization,” said Melanie. Ken has served the following: Owasso Chamber chairman, Owasso YMCA chairman, Tulsa Metro YMCA board member; and Future Owasso Rams football coach. Both Melanie and Ken are members of the Owasso Quarterback Club, and Ken played football at SMU and OSU. Melanie and Ken will be honored at the “Boots and Bowties” event in May, when they will celebrate 15 years of service with clients, family, friends and neighbors. Check out Oklahoma’s largest selection of Victorian Heart Quilts and a lot more at Homeward Bound in downtown Claremore.

By Cassie Woods

Perhaps one of downtown Claremore’s best-kept secrets is ready to make itself known. Homeward Bound is the largest seller of Victorian Heart Quilts in Oklahoma and the only vendor in the Tulsa metro area. Victorian Heart quilts are hand-stitched and 100 percent cotton. Anyone looking for high-end bedding, Jute rugs and tableware should visit their website or store to view all of the unique options available. Owners Martin and Nancy James pride themselves in specializing in highend products and recently expanded the range they carry in the store. “We opened our online store in 1999, but in 2007 decided it was time to have a physical location as well,” said Martin. “Then last year we expanded the selection of the higher-end products we carry here at the store as the Victorian Heart product line, including quilts, Jute rugs and tableware, grew in popularity. It works out great because it allows the customer to browse all the options in the comfort and convenience of their own

home, but also allows them to come in and touch, feel and see the colors, fabrics and quality workmanship in person.” “And for those customers who don’t wish to come in person, we do of course invite them to buy online and ship items to their home,” added Nancy. Customers can expect to pay around $120 to $200 for a Victorian Heart queen size quilt, but Homeward Bound will match any online price a customer can provide them. In addition to the great selection of Victorian Heart Quilts, the 5,000-square-foot store features all kinds of new home décor including Jute Rugs, Quilted and Jute tableware, wall hangings, framed prints, window treatments and Colonial Candles, as well as high-quality used furniture and decorative items. Space is available to rent for anyone who wishes to start a storefront of general home décor items, or new or refurbished furniture. Martin, who is originally from England, moved to Los Angeles in 1990. He and

Nancy came to Claremore from California in 2006 because they were looking for a better place to raise their children. Claremore ended up being a perfect choice for both family and business reasons. Both Martin and Nancy say that their favorite thing about owning a business in downtown Claremore is seeing the resurgence of Claremore’s Main Street over the years. “In addition to Homeward Bound, there are so many great stores here,” said Martin. “They weren’t here six years ago when we opened our doors, and it’s been very neat to see and be a part of the growth.” “We encourage everyone to come see us,” said Nancy. “Downtown Claremore has really become a destination, so we also encourage them to come spend a day browsing all of the other great shops and boutiques, and specialty restaurants like the Belvidere Mansion and the Pink House. This really is a fun street with all kinds of unique stuff.” As an added incentive to

visit the store, any time Nancy is there, she brings along the store mascot, a King Charles Spaniel mix named Jesse. Jesse is affectionately featured in the painted store name on the front of the building and loves to greet guests who browse the store. Homeward Bound is open six days a week for the convenience of its customers. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For information on items available in the store or

TTermites Are on Their Pest Behavior Mother Nature’s offers a comprehensive package for termite elimination and more.

By Duane Blankenship

When spring rolls around each year and you’re thinking termites, the first company that probably comes to mind is Mother Nature’s Pest Control. Founded 37 years ago, Mother Nature’s is the

state’s leading Sentricon termite installation and monitoring company. But did you know that Mother Nature’s does much more than exterminate termites? Spokesperson Shelia

Mother Nature’s spokesperson Shelia Disler says, “We’ve been family owned and operated for 37 years and are number one in Oklahoma for installing and monitoring Sentricon termite elimination systems.”

Disler outlined the company’s four departments, each possessing skilled technicians who are trained specialists in their respective fields. The first group is the company’s Sentricon/Termite Department. “About three years ago, Sentricon introduced a new HD Always-Baited Formulation that is probably the greatest improvement ever in the fight against termites,” said Shelia. “With the new system, customers get two-and-a-half times the punch they previously had with the original Sentricon system.” The foundation of the system is the rosin-based cellulose bait. Termites are attracted to it and carry it back to underground colonies, where it is regurgitated and eaten by other members of the colony, eventually eliminating the colony’s population, including the queen. The system is eco-friendly and ensures peace of mind to homeowners as it wipes out termites. Mother Nature's also provides mold and fungus treatments, as well as moisture barriers to guard against excessive moisture and stop wood rot.

The second specialty department is Pest Control. You may not realize that Mother Nature’s not only does termite colony elimination, but they also provide services for any indoor and outdoor pest that comes calling. If you’re ever “bugged” by crickets, bedbugs, ants, mosquitoes, spiders, fleas and ticks, Japanese beetles and other chewing insects, contact Mother Nature’s for a free assessment and estimate to treat and eliminate the problem. They even have a team specializing in nuisance wildlife trapping and removal. Mother Nature’s also has a Lawn Care Department. Department Manager Tom Sevitts says the department’s basic service is to feed desirable grasses and control weeds. “We also have a new Tree & Shrub Service this year,” said Tom. The lawn technician applies fungicides and provides feedings in the spring and fall. Four times per year they provide applications for insect and disease control. The Lawn Care department cares for lawns and ornamental trees and shrubs up to 20 feet in

height. They also offer effective mole and gopher control services plus aeration and grub control. Another area of experts is their Insulation Department. “Our insulating material provides energy savings by keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer,” said Shelia. “Additionally, it kills all insects that come in contact with it. Insects won’t build up a tolerance to this insulation. There is never a need to retreat the insulation.” The product contains all-natural ingredients and controls ants, centipedes, silverfish, termites, and all pests listed on the EPA label. “All of our specialists are professionally trained, skilled and licensed. Our employees have been background checked and will always come to your home or business in a Mother Nature’s uniform,” said Shelia. For more information, contact

SShop For a Cause All proceeds from Thrift Harbor benefit Hope Harbor Children’s Home & Academy.

By Carol Beck-Round

When Thrift Harbor – located at 316 W. Will Rogers Blvd. – opened in Claremore less than three years ago, the business began growing from the moment of its birth. Outgrowing their first location in a matter of months, they moved into their cur-

rent, larger building down the street in September of 2012. According to Shane McClaugherty, who oversees the daily operations of the nonprofit store, 100 percent of the proceeds go to support Hope Harbor Children’s Home & Academy and their

Mary Baumgardner, one of the shift store managers, arranges scarves on a display at Thrift Harbor.

Family Ministries. Since 1947, Hope Harbor, a licensed residential care facility, has provided services to improve the lives of children from infancy through young adulthood. The most intensive part of Hope Harbor’s services, the Children’s Home, is designed to meet the needs of at-risk teens whose lives are heading in the wrong direction. The home, located north of Claremore, has separate cottages for boys and girls with full-time house parent couples. An on-site school is also provided. “We opened Thrift Harbor in March of 2011 to support Hope Harbor and serve the community with quality items at an economical price,” says Shane. “It helps everyone during hard economic times to be able to shop here at our thrift store.” The store’s everyday low prices of $1.50 for quality adult and children’s clothing draws people in the door to shop for their families. “We charge $3 for outwear like coats, and shoes start at $2 per pair,” he adds. Knick-knacks, books, furniture and collectibles range in price from twenty-five

cents to $15. “We try to keep everything in the store low cost,” says McClaugherty. New clothes are put out daily. In fact, more than 50,000 clothing items were sold at the store in 2013. Each item sold, in turn, made a difference in the life of a child or family right here in Oklahoma. To make a clothing donation or to donate other items, you can drop them off at the store, or at any of their blue donation bins located around the state. For pickup, call (918) 8551389. More clothing and shoe donation bins have been purchased, and area churches or businesses with a convenient location are being sought that would be willing to have a bin placed on their property. Allowing space for these bins has been a wonderful way for individuals, churches and businesses to make the services Hope Harbor provides a possibility for children and families in need. Hope Harbor offers a full range of services, both on campus and off, through child and family-centered counseling in the community, parent training workshops in church and community settings, a prison ministry outreach to parents who are incarcerated, and clothing rooms in each of the public schools in the Claremore community. All told, Hope Harbor provides services to more than 2,000 children and family members every year. All services are provided regardless of ability to pay.

Page 25

“We offer low-cost childand-family-centered counseling to anyone in the community,” says McClaugherty. Counseling is available at the Blue Starr Church of Christ Family Life Center and is part of Hope Harbor’s family ministries outreach. Hope Harbor also provides parent-training workshops tailored to meet the needs of those attending. Presenters walk step-by-step through core principles of parenting in these seminars designed for parents, caregivers, and anyone working to make a difference in the lives of children. Problems are described in a way that makes finding a solution possible. Participants leave with new understandings, new skills, and a new hope. In addition to being licensed to provide residential care through the Children’s Home, Hope Harbor is licensed as a Child Placing Agency. This allows the organization to establish and oversee foster homes for residents who are unable to return home after they complete the Character Growth program at the Children’s Home.

BBe a Superhero for a Day The CAN Superhero Challenge is an obstacle course event for all ages benefitting the Child Abuse Network.

By Sheryl Sowell

Child abuse is a painful subject that people don’t like to talk about, or even think about; but it is something that happens every day and needs to be brought to the community’s awareness. The Child Abuse Network (CAN) is a nonprofit organization that provides a variety of services to victims of abuse, at no cost to the families. Last year, CAN served 2,499 children, which is approximately 200 a month. To raise funds for its important contributions to children and families across the metro area, CAN is hosting the first ever CAN

Superhero Challenge on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the POSTOAK Lodge & Retreat. “You can be a superhero to a child by participating in this wonderful event we’re so excited about,” says Brandi Moore, community relations manager of CAN. “This will be a family-friendly afternoon of fun and fitness where everyone is encouraged to dress like their favorite superhero.” The CAN Superhero Challenge will feature two obstacle events. The Superhero Challenge is for

Chris and Elizabeth Ellison, co-chairs of the CAN Superhero Challenge, and their son, Taylor (a.k.a. Super T), in front of the Teddy Bear Room at CAN.

participants 13 and older and features a 1.8 mile trail run and obstacle course. The Sidekick Challenge, recommended for children 12 and younger, is a half-mile run and obstacle course. Chris and Elizabeth Ellison and Hank and Molly Pellegrini, co-chairs of the event, created the idea with the design help of 918 CrossFit. “Kids are going to love the Sidekick Challenge, which includes jumping through tires, balancing on a beam, belly crawling under picnic tables, and the very best part at the end – a 68 foot inflatable bounce house obstacle,” says Chris. “Parents are able to watch their children complete the course, and there will be lots of photo opportunities. The POSTOAK Lodge is a beautiful setting.” After the Sidekick Challenge is the Superhero Challenge for ages 13+. “This obstacle challenge is more elaborate and includes crawling in a sand pit, tossing items through tires and trail running. If someone is unable to complete a particular obstacle, he is given a ‘punishment’ to do instead, such as walking lunges,” explains Chris. “This

rogers county

event can be as challenging as you want to make it.” After the challenges, superheroes will have a super time listening to music provided by DJ Connections, jumping and playing in the bounce houses, getting their faces painted, and munching on snacks provided by QuikTrip. In keeping with the childfocused theme, CAN is holding a school challenge, awarding $500 to the school with the most participation in either challenge. To acknowledge your school for the prize money, please enter your school on the online or paper registration form. CAN exists to reduce the trauma that a child abuse investigation can pose for the child. Before the program came into being 25 years ago, children frequently endured stressful examinations and numerous interviews by various agencies, often in cold, sterile facilities. Today CAN delivers a highly effective alternative, bringing multiple agencies together in a single, safe and comforting environment. CAN enables medical, mental health, investigative and legal professionals to work together under one roof to provide less traumatic investigation and to determine if child abuse has occurred. The center houses professionals from the Tulsa Police Department, DHS, the District Attorney’s Office, and OU-Tulsa's School of Community Medicine. According to Kate Davis, development director for

Page 27

CAN, “Everyone works side by side to advocate for these children in crisis. Our goal is to determine the answers to two questions – is the child safe, and has a crime been committed that deserves prosecution? For an abused child, adjusting to life after abuse is difficult, and CAN is here to help make children feel safe and comfortable as they begin the healing process.” Support this valuable organization and have a wonderful afternoon with the family by signing up for the Superhero Challenge. The event will be held at the beautiful POSTOAK Lodge & Retreat, located 15 minutes from downtown Tulsa at 5323 W. 31st St. N., on Sunday, March 30. The Sidekick Challenge begins at 2 p.m., and the Superhero Challenge is at 2:30. Early registration is highly encouraged. All participants who register before March 13 will receive a T-shirt, and online registration closes March 26. Cost is $25 for the Superhero Challenge and $15 for the Sidekick Challenge. Day-of registration includes a $5 price increase. And don’t forget to dress like a superhero! If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, call the Oklahoma Hotline: (800) 522-3511. Prepare for the Dog Days of Summer flea shampoo. In addition to basic bathing and grooming, Beth’s Pawfection also does nail clipping and filing, as well as nail painting and caps. Other services include skin treatments, anal gland expressing and teeth brushing. The grooming area also features special equipment to ensure unique pets, like especially large breeds or elderly dogs, are safe and comfortable during their session. A walk-in tub is helpful for dogs with bad backs, or those who are so large they cannot be safely picked up and placed in a regular tub. Also, an electric grooming table, which is adjustable from ground to waist height, is a necessary

luxury for such situations. Such attention to detail and extra effort at care helps pets and owners enjoy their grooming experience. Holmes opened her grooming service at the current location three years ago. Word about Beth’s Pawfection has travelled fast and business has steadily increased; her staff has grown, too. Holmes is pleased with her team and client base. “We have plenty of people to handle appointments within a day or so,” she says. While appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are accepted if and when time permits. Business hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

At the core of her team is Shelly Crosthwait. A master groomer and registered veterinary technician, Crosthwait also draws upon her experience showing dogs. “Shelly is great at giving advice,” says Holmes. It is common for owners to overlook early signs of illness in their pets, and Crosthwait is helpful in drawing attention to potential concerns. Amber Combs, another groomer, is “a natural,” according to Holmes, and is a welcome asset to the team. Bathers Brittney and Beverly work hard to support the groomers and keep pets calm and happy as they wait. “One of my main concerns is making sure pets are comfortable and hap-

Car Country Celebrates One Year in Claremore Car Country is a straightforward experience. “We want to help everyone,” says General Manager Alex Sordo. “There is always a way for customers to buy a car.” Car Country specializes in helping customers who have recently gone through a bankruptcy, divorce or other significant event that has taken its toll on their credit score. Acknowledging that a good running car is key to a successful livelihood, Sordo says, “We will work with you and get you on the right path.” He and his sales team will do everything they can to help customers find the best car they can afford and help

them get on the road to building better credit. Another part of the recipe behind Car Country’s successful model is their affiliation with Nelson Automotive Group. For more than 30 years, the company has provided excellent automotive sales and service to Tulsa and the surrounding region. With Nelson Automotive Group backing Car Country, customers can rest easy knowing they are dealing with an established and reliable company, not some fly-by-night dealer. “We want customers to know we will be here tomorrow,” says Sordo. The drive toward earning the

trust of customers extends to service and maintenance, too. Car Country has a service center in Sapulpa, which handles maintenance and repairs for all five lots. This 20,000-square-foot facility features state-of-the-art technology that helps cut costs for automotive service, as well as provides a reliable service center to address issues with vehicles. Customers need not worry about backyard mechanics with questionable work. Car Country has taken the extra step to ensure their customers are taken care of. All cars in their inventory are completely serviced before being brought to the lot. “Each car undergoes a 30-point

Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show Center, 400 Veterans Parkway, March 21 through 23. Every spring since 1998, the nonprofit Rogers County Builders Association partners with businesses to present the weekend-long event that features exhibitors and vendors, live demonstrations, seminars, food and more. Attendees spend the weekend enjoying an up-close look at the latest in farm equipment, learning new techniques to update homes and landscape, and discovering new products and businesses. This year promises another successful event, according to organizers. “We have developed an excellent team – the best team so far – to produce this show,” says Brett Knapp, RCBA president and general manager of the event. “We expect to have over 100 exhibitors,” says Laurel DeLammermore, the event’s assistant general manager. Attendees will see booths from a variety of businesses and organizations which provide resources, equipment and services related to farming, landscaping and home construction. The Master Gardner Association of Rogers County will also conduct a question and answer session. Many exhibitors

from across Oklahoma and the Midwest will display their wares, share their knowledge and connect with the public throughout the weekend including wineries, storm shelter dealers and more. There will also be live cooking on stage, including demonstrations by Bill Biard (owner/chef of Hammett House) and Brad Johnson (executive chef for Hal Smith Restaurant Group). Informative seminars will take place during the event. Mack Greever, attorney, will present on real estate law. John Haase (horticulturist educator at OSU Extension Office in Rogers County) will present on several topics throughout the weekend. There will plenty to do and see at the event beyond the exhibitors’ booths and demonstrations. Look for a display of antique trailers. A kids’ area will feature inflatables, a slide and other activities. Freddy’s Famous Corndogs, Andolini’s Pizzeria and The Bone Pile are a few of the vendors selling food at the event this year. Spectrum Paint is the Gold Sponsor for the 2014 Rogers County Home and Garden Farm and Ranch Show. Brown Sod Farm, Stillwater Milling Company and Marble

EEvery Vote Counts A fun American Red Cross event playfully shows attendees that sometimes politics can be downright murder.

By Cassie Woods Organizers are asking you to mark your calendars for March 7 and 8, for this year’s American Red Cross Murder Mystery. This popular, family-friendly night out will be held at the Will Rogers Auditorium on the Claremore campus of Rogers State University, which is a co-sponsor for the event. Also co-sponsoring the event is the Rotary Club of Claremore. The Murder Mystery event started in 1998 as a way to raise money for college scholarships and then for foster children. It became an American Red Cross fundraiser eight years later when playwright Mark Ogle went to work as the organization's local service center director. “We have a great story for this year’s attendees that has as many twists and turns as any other play we have done," said Ogle. The setting is the 1950s, at the mansion of local businessman, Walter Smithson, where later in the evening he plans to announce his intentions of running for governor. Smithson, one of the richest, most powerful men in the state, believes he can make a real difference because what his constituents need is a real businessman representing them, not career politicians. But when one enters politics, his past skeletons have the potential to come to light. This year’s Murder Mystery will expose what Smithson’s are and how will they impact his run for office. The audience will recognize many cast members from past productions, including David Barron, who plays the lead role of Walter Smithson. “Community theatre is addictive,” said Barron. “We are doing this to raise money for a great organization, but we are also having a really great time. I think the audience senses the camaraderie and how much fun we are having, and that makes it an even more enjoyable experience for them.” Directing the production is veteran community theatre director Dan Huey, who has also acted in previous murder mysteries. “All of the talent are locals and they are a very creative bunch,” said Huey. “I enjoy this so much that I keep coming back every year.” "Dan is a great director who is able to take this group of talented people and produce a great play," said Ogle. “The cast is having fun. I am sure the audience will have fun. It will be a great time all around." In addition to a fun performance, each audience member will also have an opportunity to use their deductive skills to get Answers on page 28

involved in the drama. “We always give our guests a chance to try to solve who did it and why,” said Ogle. “So if you’re the type of person who thinks they can solve any mystery before the first TV commercial airs, come and see if you can be the one and only person who will walk away with the highly-prized Super Sleuth Award, a prize wanted by many, but that can only be won by one.” The American Red Cross Murder Mystery will be held on March 7 and 8. Doors will open both nights at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m. Tickets must be purchased at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Proceeds from the event go to the American Red Cross to help those who suffer a disaster, such as a house fire, and all money raised will stay locally in Rogers County. For more information, contact

TTony Does It All Blending new techniques with tried and true craftsmanship, Tile by Tony’s excellence extends beyond tile work. By Christopher Davis

“It’s that time of the year when people start thinking about home improvements and remodeling,” says Tony Sementi, owner of Tile by Tony. And, if this spring is anything like last year, weather should be ideal for an early start to major projects. Tony Sementi first opened his business in 1982. Initially, Sementi focused solely on tile work. But over the years, he gradually expanded the scope of his business to offer a full line of construction services. “It was a natural progression,” he says. It made sense to take on an entire kitchen remodel, rather than just the counters and backsplash. While the name has stayed, Sementi wants everyone to know that he and his staff can take on just about any project. Tile by Tony specializes in remodeling bathrooms and kitchens, as well as creating customized spaces such as closets, media areas or offices. When Tile by Tony takes on a project, they do so in a “turn-key” fashion. Most

people want to avoid hiring multiple contractors for a project, and Sementi understands this. Hiring one company to complete a project means costs are more manageable, communication is better, and fewer people are working in your home or office. “You’ve got to know these people are going to be friendly and safe,” says Sementi. His workers are careful to treat your home or office with the respect they expect at their own place. They will show up on day one with a dump trailer and make sure all waste materials leave with them. Additionally, they cover the floors in the work space, protecting your home and ensuring no dirt gets tracked in while they work. If needed, they will tent-off a work space, to make sure contaminants do not spread throughout the building. They even have an air scrubber to catch fine particles that may be irritable to lungs, skin or eyes. And, unlike some contractors, Sementi prides himself on

visiting each site daily. “I’m very hands on, and that makes a difference,” he says. Sementi’s experience has shown him the value of direct communication and involvement with clients and workers. All work is backed by a warrantee. He explains, “We want things to last, and we focus on doing things the right way.” If you have a need for remodel, tile or new building work, then you cannot afford to hire an amateur. Tile by Tony offers competitive rates for projects, and has a showroom in Catoosa with a wide selection of products. From tile to floor panels, bathroom and kitchen fixtures to samples of stone and ceramic materials, the showroom has everything needed to map out a project from start to finish. Let the professionals with a proven track record do the dirty work for you. No one brings a value for high-quality work and swift completion like Tile by Tony. With over 30 years’ experience in the trade,

Tony Sementi, owner, Tile by Tony.

Sementi has built a reputation for excellence. Angie’s List – a website that provides member reviews of businesses – has named Tile by Tony for five awards. Recently, the Better Business Bureau added Tile by Tony to their Honor Roll.

A Healthy Green Lawn This Summer Starts Today SoonerLawn provides a six-step lawn care program that begins in early spring.

By Deanna Rebro

A thick, lush, head-turning landscape this summer begins with a phone call today to SoonerLawn. So much of caring for a lawn comes down to knowing what needs to be done and when to do it. For the past 10 years,

SoonerLawn has been delivering a six-step lawn care program from early spring through fall that gets rid of weeds and nourishes grass so it will look good year-round. Owner and U.S. Army Captain Michael Bolton says

that early spring is the best time to begin preparing your lawn. SoonerLawn’s six-step program begins with an application of pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass control, continues with additional weed control and

fertilizers during spring and summer, and ends with a winterization weed control in the fall. While many homeowners treat their own lawns and obtain so-so results, the SoonerLawn professionals take things to the next level by treating lawns with the right formulations for that particular grass at the right times throughout the year for optimum results, applying lime to regulate proper soil ph to allow maximum effectiveness of fertilizers, and monitoring for insects and diseases. One of the hallmarks of SoonerLawn is quick results. “We don’t have to tell our customers their lawns are getting better. They can see improvement each time we’re there,” says Michael. One customer, president and landscaping chairman of The Reserve at Battle Creek said, “The Reserve looks better that it has ever looked in the past, thanks to the Sooner crew. They are very professional and take great pride in their work. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a lawn care company.” Michael adds that SoonerLawn’s prices are below most, if not all, other local lawn care companies. And their prompt and professional customer service goes above and beyond expectations. “We keep our

Page 33

customers happy by offering great service at a great price with great results. Just give us a chance to prove it,” he says. A five-year customer echoes his comment. “We have found Michael’s work to be very good, as well as his pricing. We would highly recommend his services.” SoonerLawn serves residential and commercial customers throughout Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Jenks, Sand Springs, Owasso and Claremore. Optional services include fertilization of flower beds, aeration for more effective watering and nourishment, perimeter control, insect control of fleas, ticks, ants, spiders and chinch bugs, mole control, turf disease control and fescue seeding. They are fully licensed and insured, and all their recommended work is guaranteed. SoonerLawn is also accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Preparation now will go a long way toward enjoying the healthy green lawn you want this summer. And you don’t have to lift a finger except to call Sooner Lawn.

AA Family Tradition Second-generation family members take over the helm of Black Hat Cleaning Services & Roofing. By Duane Blankenship

Black Hat Cleaning Services & Roofing has served the Tulsa area for the past 37 years. The chimney sweeping

business was established by David E. Harris and his wife, Terri, while David E. worked full time at a local conven-

ience store. They both worked Saturdays establishing their new business. David E. and Terri –

Black Hat Cleaning Services & Roofing’s second-generation family owners and operators include Mike, Patience and David CR.

who was pregnant with their daughter, Patience, at the time – went door to door with flyers trying to launch the business. It took four months to actually land their first chimney sweeping job. After that, the company quickly began growing and David was soon able to devote full time to the new business. It later expanded to include the cleaning of air ducts and heating units and clothes dryer ducts. In March of last year the company again expanded operations with the addition of the Black Hat Roofing Division. Today, Black Hat serves Tulsa and surrounding communities with chimney cleaning and repair, air duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning and repair, and roofing services. David E. retired from the family-owned and operated business in January of this year. His children, David CR and Patience, have literally grown up at their dad’s business. Both have been in management positions with the company for years, and Patience’s husband, Mike Boles, joined the company last year when it launched its Roofing Division. Mike has over 25 years of experience in the roofing industry. The new family management team explains that they were always on rooftops doing chimney cleaning work, and it just made sense for them to expand services into roofing. So many of the water leaks they see are directly related to

a combination of problems caused by faulty or aging chimneys and roofs. “We had a good first year with our roofing operation,” said Mike. “We’re excited about expanding the roofing part of our business in 2014.” “We know the family business,” said Patience. “David and I were home schooled and spent a lot of time growing up in and around the business. We’ve been in the mix most of our lives.” David CR actually started doing some of the vent cleaning work with his dad when he was only 12. “At 15,” he said, “I was training my dad’s employees in the summer, before I had to start back to school in the fall.” Patience said she started picking up on the company’s operations and helping out in the office when she was about 10. Today, David CR heads the cleaning portion of the company, and Patience manages the office operations. When you attend the 2014 Greater Home & Garden Show at Expo Square March 6-9, be sure to visit Black Hat Cleaning & Roofing Services at booth #1447 and ask about setting up a visit for a free estimate.
