Eye Exams Can 35 Years of Creating Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms Detect LifeThreatening Problems Tony Sementi, owner of Tile by Tony, offers customers tips on choosing the right contractor for your home project. By Jim Butcher

A local mother encourages everyone to get a yearly eye exam after a brain tumor was discovered pressing on her son’s optic nerve. By Carol Beck-Round For almost a year, 12-year-old Christian Garner had been battling headaches. When the headaches grew worse and her

son began vomiting, Christa Garner called Advanced Vision Center in Claremore for an (continued on page 22)

Dr. Abby Overstreet discovered a benign tumor in 12-yearold Christian Garner’s brain during an eye exam last April. The golf-ball size tumor was pressing on Christian’s optic nerve, causing headaches and brain hemorrhaging. After surgery in Oklahoma City, Christian is now free of headaches and has perfect vision.

Fitness Time for Ladies continues to grow as Phase 3 of their expansion is set to be finished later this month or early February, according to owner Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka. The popular women’s gym, located in the North Park Medical Center on Highway 66 North, offers ladies more than 6,000 square feet of options to get healthy and fit. With the completion of Phase 3, more locker space – about 20 are being added – will be available, along with a completed coffee and breakfast bar. Financial New Year’s Resolutions: A Down To Earth Practical Approach BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

New Year’s Resolutions…sigh… Lots of folks make New Year’s Resolutions and then wonder why they didn’t work. Newsflash…They don’t work because you don’t follow through. Most of the time folks don’t follow through because they really didn’t have a true desire to do them in the first place, or maybe they want the outcomes but are not really committed to the sacrifice it takes to accomplish the results. The first step to making a successful goal is to look at what you REALLY want. In our very fast food, in and out, want it now way of life, it is natural to want to achieve some shortterm, “feel good” reward for the work that you do. I suggest setting some of these “feel good” goals along with the long-term ones that you want to achieve. Here are some suggestions for a balanced approach: • Create your Life Bucket List. This should include all the things that you would like to do before you “kick the bucket,” so to speak. Write them down. Examples of this would be

“things” you want to buy, “experiences” you would like to have, “goals” that you would like to accomplish both now and later in your life. Hopefully this will be a LONG list. After you have created this list, break it down into short, medium, and longterm goals. Then, sort your list by the ones that matter most to you in each category. I usually hear some pretty common themes when I talk to clients about their bucket list. Some of the things on many folks’ shortterm list involve houses, recreational vehicles and vacations. On their long-term lists, I usually see something about retiring comfortably. • Once you have prioritized your list by “when” and “importance to you,” make a detailed, measurable goal for this year about how to begin to attain

that goal. Sometimes in the beginning, it’s about paying down debt or making a specific goal of saving to achieve your overall goal. Most of the time, the goal is not achievable in a single year. You should keep your list somewhere that you will see it on a weekly basis. Review it for progress at the end of each month when you pay your bills. You are in this for the long haul. Don’t get discouraged. Stay the course. Your life bucket list is a changing, living document. It is not written in stone and it’s okay to occasionally change some of your ideas. However, be mindful of the changes that you make and why. To help you stay on track, choose a really good financial advisor. Pick someone you can trust, who understands you, and who will help you with the nuts and bolts of your overall financial goals and the day to day decisions about how to get there. Money Memories, Lessons Learned

“Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. By Jocelyn Wood Edmund Burke once wrote, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” When it comes to money and how to manage it, our past offers valuable lessons. Our experiences

with money – good and bad – can motivate us to change our present way of spending and saving. We asked RCB Bank employees to share their first money memories and the lessons they learned growing up. “I didn’t have a very good

education on money,” said Jennifer Lane, teller. “My parents were never good savers. They’d always tell us we couldn’t do things because we ‘didn’t have any money,’ so as a child I missed out on a lot, never did sports or activities. My parents also have bad credit and couldn’t

help co-sign on student loans. This made me realize as a parent I wanted to spend my money wisely so my kids could be kids and participate in activities.” “When I was very little, my mother wanted to teach me how to budget, so she put mason jars in the kitchen cupboard with tags on each one – savings, spending, tithe – and taught me how to split up my allowance each week and later my first paychecks,” said Marni Rammage, customer service representative. “Since she started me so young, it became a habit that carried over into my adulthood. Although I don’t use mason jars anymore, the principal of budgeting is instilled in me.” “The first money I earned was for babysitting,” said Julie Gaches, loan officer. “My dad convinced me that I should buy savings bonds with some of it. He told me that it was a ‘really good deal – you give them $12 and you get back $25.’ He left out that it would be 10 years or more to get the $25 back! Another very important lesson I learned growing up was to make savings automatic.” “When I was around age 8, I noticed my mom always took time on the weekends to pull out this little book,” said Sean McKee, mortgage loan originator. “She kept adding and subtracting numbers and I wondered what she was doing. One day I asked and she said, ‘I’m balancing my checkbook. Balancing is a good way to know how much money you have left in the bank.’ She asked me if I ever wondered why she kept all of her receipts. I hadn’t paid much attention to notice. At that point, I learned the importance of keeping track of your purchases and deposits.” “My great uncle gave me a beef

Page 5

bouillon container full of pennies when I was five years old,” said Robin Landsaw, retail coordinator. “He told me if I take care of my pennies, the dollars would take care of themselves. I still have the container with the pennies in it today to remind me of the importance of saving, even if that means the simple act of saving my pennies.” “I started working when I was 12. I learned real fast how hard you had to work for what little money you earned,” said Carol Houston, banker. “I learned how fast money spends versus how long it takes to earn. The best advice given to me was always pay yourself first. Take a little something out of each paycheck to put back for your future.” “At age 11, I got my first lesson about money and loans,” said Skip Mefford, branch president. “I was completely infatuated with this hunting bow and I didn’t want it, I needed it. It cost $125. I had a $10 a week allowance but no money saved at the time, so I pestered my dad until he decided to give me my first loan. He lent me the money and collected half of my allowance every week. It taught me that if something is given to us, we tend to not appreciate the item as much as if we had to work for it.”

Need A New Image? Get your skin in shape this year with skin care products and a laser technique that really work.

By Carol Beck-Round

When you think of a new year, your thoughts may automatically turn to fitness and diet. Gyms fill up after the holidays, but Gina Picart, licensed aesthetician and certified laser technician, encourages you to get your skin healthy in 2015 also. Picart, who is with A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center in Claremore, says, “Wintertime is a great time to focus on your skin health. Many people don’t get out as much as they do in the warmer months. It’s a perfect time to do any type of laser treatments to your face as well as to begin a new skin care regimen.” A New Image is offering specials beginning this month on laser treatments as well as the Obagi Nu-Derm System skin care products, to help you achieve your healthiest skin yet. “If you want your skin transformed, the combination laser peel and NuDerm products will help you with your skin fitness.”

Licensed Aesthetician and Certified Laser Technician Gina Picart stands beside the Obagi products that can transform your skin in the New Year.

Picart adds, “Many people are intimidated by the term ‘laser peel’ because they think it requires a lot of downtime and discomfort, but what people don’t know is that we can customize the laser peel based on their needs and the time they have. We can calibrate the laser to make the treatment milder or more aggressive.” Depending on the individual’s needs, more than one treatment may be required but January is a great month to begin, according to Picart. “Our January special is an affordable way for people to experience the benefits of medical skincare and laser treatments,” she adds. You can also schedule a complimentary consultation with Picart and receive a free gift bag with goodies. What makes the Obagi Nu-Derm System so dynamic? According to Picart, “It really does what it says it will do. It’s a sophisticated FDA approved medically-based product to give you healthier skin.” With daily use of the Nu-Derm System, you will see resilient-looking skin, reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, a refreshed look with more even skin tone and texture, as well as reduced hyperpigmentation (discoloration). It’s also the number one prescription-strength,

physician-dispensed skin care system. “It has been clinically proven to help address the signs of aging in all skin types,” she adds. According to statistics, 96 percent of patients showed an improvement in dark spots and discoloration; 100 percent of patients reported it was more effective or much more effective than other medications they had tried; 96 percent of patients were no longer very embarrassed or very self-conscious about their skin. When you combine a laser peel with Obagi products, she adds, “You will be getting your skin in shape from the inside out.” When you think “New Year and a new you,” don’t forget your skin health. At A New Image Cosmetic Laser Center, you will find the newest technology and great products as well as qualified staff right here in Rogers County.

Feel Like You’re Living in a Fog or Cloud? TMS Therapy is a proven non-drug therapy for depression. By Dr. Jeff McIlroy

At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we are dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs. We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing, which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. TMS therapy has many advantages, including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks. Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore your health and rediscover a life that is free from depression. TMS therapy is now covered by insurance companies including Medicare. Consider this testimonial from one of our patients: “For the past 20 plus years, I have struggled with depression and anxiety. I have hopped from doctor to doctor seeking help, only to be prescribed endless numbers of anti-depressants and various anxiety medications. I’ve endured

dosage adjustments, changes in medications and combinations of medications that had only short term results. When looking for yet another doctor, I discovered Strength of Mind and after Dr. McIlroy treating a TMS patient. consulting with Dr. McIlroy, they determined that I would be a good candidate for To see NeuroStar featured on the Dr. Oz Show, go TMS Therapy. However, the ACA regulations for single individuals states that the penalty is the greater of $95 or one percent of household income, with a maximum ceiling penalty per non-compliant taxpayer. The compliance complexity, reconciliation process and penalties are increased in both 2015 and 2016. H&R Block, one of the world’s largest tax services and currently celebrating its 60th anniversary, has been preparing for over a year to implement the new tax code changes and train its tax profession-

If the proper ACA forms and computations are not in the tax return, a taxpayer may find a refund being delayed by the Internal Revenue Service for 45 to 60 days. in Claremore and Owasso will be holding a free ACA consultation service on January 8 in order to help taxpayers determine their respective ACA situations prior to preparing their 2014 tax return. He encourages people to stop by and ask their healthcare questions prior to preparing their 2014 tax returns. Brun owns and operates the Claremore office of H&R Block and in partnership with Pat Etzkorn, owns and operates the Owasso H&R Block office. “Service to our clients in preparing tax returns starts with the highlytrained, professional tax associate completing a thorough tax return interview with the client,” Brun said. “We make sure the tax client understands how their return was computed, why the results of the return may vary from what the client expected the outcome to be, and what tax alternatives the taxpayer has to affect their current and future tax returns.” Both the Claremore and Owasso offices are open year-round to serve your needs. Taxpayer tax issues don’t end April 15, Brun emphasized. “You are welcomed at both Block locations. We accept appointments, drop offs and walkins.”

with the loss of a job, parents planning for their children’s educations, individuals facing retirement and income needs, or a widow after the death of her spouse. “It’s not just about money,” says Melanie. “It’s about the stories people create about money and what it represents in their relationships.” Melanie and Waterstone Private Wealth Management want clients to feel special, because they are. “We want them to know that we truly care about them and their families,” says Melanie. Talking about money, “the M word” is often very difficult for folks. At Waterstone Private Wealth Management, Melanie and Ken help people begin to overcome those barriers and start to have a real conversation about their money. The company was established in January of 2003 by Melanie HastyGrant and husband Ken Grant. Together, they have more than 25 years in the financial industry. Melanie graduated with a master’s degree in counseling from Oklahoma State University and practiced as a marriage and family therapist for many years. She has always loved helping others. “Money is one of the issues that families and couples struggle with the most. In working with couples, power struggles over money and financial infidelity are common issues,” Melanie said. Woody Guthrie W Center Growing Ronald D. Cohen donates more than 500 books and collectibles to Woody Guthrie Center Archives. By Todd Cunningham

Folk music author and academic Ronald D. Cohen recently donated his personal collection including over 500 books related to the folk music genre, Woody Guthrie, and his contemporaries to the Woody Guthrie Center. The books will be added to the WGC research library for academics to access. In addition, the collection includes multiple boxes of collectible material and rare items that will be housed in the Center vault beside the Woody Guthrie Archives and Phil Ochs Archives. The items include, among numerous other rare items, one of Pete Seeger’s very first mimeographed, self-published banjo instruction booklets (there were only 100 printed in 1948), along with Seeger’s freshman yearbook from his early years at Harvard, which also pictures his classmate, a young John F. Kennedy. “We are honored to be the caretakers of this special collection of items that will be added to the archives of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs, and we look

forward to sharing them with our patrons and researchers,” said WGC Executive Director Deana McCloud. “Truly there are too many treasures to mention…so many things that will be excellent

exhibit pieces as well as academic and educational resources.” The collection also contains complete runs of folk music periodicals such as Sing Out! and Broadside, and photos from Sis Cunningham’s collection of early Newport Folk Festival performers. The Woody Guthrie Center,

www.ValueNews.com located at 102 E. Brady St. in Tulsa, is more than a museum; instead, it is a center of investigation for inspiration. By providing examples of Woody’s ability to use his creativity as a way of expressing the world around him, the Center encourages others to find their voices and the power that lies within the creative process. Public programs are free with paid admission of $8 (discounts available for senior, student, youth, groups and military). Beginning Friday, January 9, the Woody Guthrie Center will hold a weekly afterschool music program for students ages 12 and above, providing a diverse educational experience in creating

a band and managing it. During the program, students will take part in a variety of activities including songwriting, instrument and vocal lessons, band management, and learning to work together as a band. They will then be given the opportunity to create a song from start to finish including recording a polished version and filming a music video for it. Participants will also learn music and cultural history by exploring the work and music of Woody Guthrie and tracking his influence to some of their favorite artists of today. At the end of the program, the musicians will perform at a local venue and put into practice what they have learned. They will be in charge of promoting their performance using social media, distributing fliers, and using other grass-roots efforts. The program meets every Friday, 4:30 to 6 p.m., and runs through mid-May. The cost is $50 in January and $80 per month thereafter with scholarships available and a 10% discount for members. TTheatre of Illusion Have a magical Valentine’s Day with illusionists the Spencers at Robson Performing Arts Center. This is a far cry from your run-of-the-mill magic show, and the Spencers are not your typical magicians. The Spencers’ production is a unique fusion of magic and illusion, humor and mystery, and persona and personality. Ticket prices are set to family friendly, ranging from $10 to $18, with group rates available. Kevin Spencer sees the production not as a stage full of tricks used to fool people, but as a way to inspire viewers with a sense of wonder. By blending the theatrical elements of a Broadway-style production with the high energy of a rock concert, these artists take their audience on a journey to the brink of impossibility – and back again. The duo presents a big high-tech stage show that combines drama, comedy, romance and suspense with elaborate stage illusions. You won’t believe your eyes! The Spencers appear almost nightly in a different town or city somewhere in the world. Eye Exams Can Detect Life-Threatening Problems appointment. Although his previous eye exams had turned out fine, she knew something was wrong. “I thought he was having migraines and might need reading glasses again,” says Garner. “He had worn them for a year when he was eight, but his vision had been corrected by the eyeglasses.” When Dr. Abby Overstreet examined Christian’s eyes on April 1, 2014, she discovered something pressing on the boy’s optic nerve, causing severe swelling and blood hemorrhaging in the back of his eyes. “The first thing I thought of was brain tumor, so I immediately called Dr. Brent Hinkle, who is my primary care physician as well as Christian’s,” says Dr. Overstreet. “Within two hours, Dr. Hinkle had scheduled an MRI for Christian, which did reveal a large brain tumor.” Surgeons at OU Medical Center in

Oklahoma City operated on Christian on April 8, discovering a rare golf-ball size benign tumor called Subependymal Giant Cell Astrogcytoma (SEGA). “While it was not cancerous, it could have caused more problems for Christian,” says Dr. Overstreet. “There was danger from brain bleed, and he could have easily gone blind. There was so much pressure on the brain that he could have had a stroke. He had already lost his peripheral vision, but since the surgery, he has regained it.” In fact, there was no permanent damage. But the rare tumor could return anytime throughout his life, so Christian will need yearly exams, according to Dr. Overstreet. Dr. Overstreet wants to emphasize the importance of yearly eye exams for

everyone. “While children are screened at school, it is not a substitute for a complete eye exam. I think those screenings are great because they can catch early vision problems; however, a yearly exam to check one’s eye health is important for all ages.” She has detected high blood pressure, high cholesterol, blocked arteries and diabetes in her older patients. “People often don’t realize the importance of eye health,” she adds. “One of my patients had blood pressure through the roof, and he had hemorrhaging in the back of his eye. We immediately called an ambulance.” As for Christa Garner, she is extremely grateful to Dr. Overstreet for being so proactive in getting the care her son needed. “I encourage others to get a yearly eye exam because the health of your eyes can reveal a lot about your body in general,” she adds.

continued from page 1 Garner, who was finishing up her LPN studies when the event with Christian occurred, has now graduated and is employed part-time by Dr. Overstreet. “It’s not that I saved the child’s life that day,” says Dr. Overstreet. “I just happened to be God’s helper.” For more information, contact

Fitness Time for Ladies Continues Expansion es are going very well,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. Because of the popularity of the classes, he is planning to add more bikes and more classes. An expanded Zumba room and the addition of two All Motion Trainer cardio devices have been part of the facility’s expansion this past year. “We’ve also added kickboxing classes,” he says. “A big screen TV is being added to the Zumba room so women can do self-led workouts if they can’t make it to classes.” In addition to spin classes, Zumba classes and kickboxing, Fitness Time for Ladies offers yoga and a yoga flexibility mix, step aerobics, a spin and sculpt class, a super sculpt class, cardio classes and Tabata classes. The schedule, which changes periodically after a usage evaluation, is always posted at the website and on their

Facebook page, where you can also find class cancellations or last minute changes. What sets Fitness Time for Ladies apart from the other gyms in the Claremore area? Besides being for women only, the atmosphere is personal, private, clean and aesthetically pleasing. Fitness Time is also an all-inclusive gym, which means that there are no extra charges for fitness classes or tanning. “Many gyms charge extra for their classes,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not. When you pay your monthly fee, you have full use of our facility, including tanning. You get the whole gym for the price of a tanning membership.” By constantly upgrading what is offered at Fitness Time, Dr. Hrdlicka says he is adding more value to the membership. “We never increase the price when

we add new classes, new equipment or more tanning beds.” Another recent addition to Fitness Time for Ladies is Tranquillite, a massage therapy and relaxation service customized to fit your needs. Provided by Leslie Cohen, MT, and Angela Miller, MT, services are offered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays or by appointment. “Our mission is to assist people in their pursuit of health and fitness,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We are dedicated to providing our customers with current and pertinent information on fitness and nutrition. Our uniquely designed programs are catered towards the individual, with our commitment to the highest standards of personal service.” The all-inclusive membership, if paid monthly by automatic bank draft, is

continued from page 1 $49.05. However, if paid in advance, the membership fee is only $40 per month or $480 for a year. For more package options and class schedules, go to their website. “We want the gym to feel like an extension of home,” he adds.

35 Years of Creating Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms Guide” on How to Pick a Contractor for this type of project. 1. Scope of work. Knowing exactly what you want done will help generate a detailed, accurate and less expensive bid. Be consistent and give identical information to all bidders. He suggests, share your budget with the contractor prior to the bid and consider doing the job in stages, if the estimate is too high. 2. Ownership oversight. Are you prepared to stay home to oversee the job, chase down materials, clean up job sites, and accept less than high-quality work? Then the low bidder will probably work for you. Do you want to feel completely safe leaving your family and belongings at home while you’re at work? Then be prepared to hire a professional. “Remember, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for,” said Sementi. “I don’t want my customers and any member of their families to be scared. I want you to have peace of mind when my men are working in your homes,” he said. Tenure of his 15 employees range from the newest of seven years to one he hired in 1991. 3. Know the difference between an amateur and a professional. You immediately know a professional. They are on time to meetings or will communicate with you about any delay in meeting you, Sementi said. “They will be very knowledgeable on all aspects of a project. A professional will rarely throw out numbers; a professional’s bid will be very detailed, with scope of work and the cost of each item. This protects both parties. If it is not itemized, it’s not included.” 4. Get references. The Better Business Bureau, the Home Builder’s Association, and online sites like Angie’s List are also a good place to start, he con-

tinued. “Listen to your gut, it usually knows. Ask for recent references. Even a lousy contractor has had a good job or two,” he adds. To be on the safe side, check them out! And don’t overlook the obvious. Has the contractor done this kind of work before? For example, hiring a contractor who does excellent backsplash work does not mean that he can remodel a shower. 5. Communication is a biggie. “Without good communication between you and your contractor, the job will fail to meet your expectations,” Sementi said. “Communication is to construction like location is to real estate.” 6. Magnetic sign on a truck or brick and mortar? Though not a guarantee of quality, brick and mortar will show that he has a commitment to the community. 7. Verify your contractor’s workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. Most homeowners fail to check these basic things. Your homeowner’s insurance will not cover you if someone gets hurt on your job. You could lose your home. Sementi said, most people prefer to hire one company for the entire project; this helps both the homeowner and the contractor in completing the project on time and reducing expense.

TThree Broadway Smashes The Broken Arrow PAC Foundation wraps up Spotlight Series. By Adam J. Foreman From Grammy winners to renowned Broadway shows to everything in between, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation continues to bring the world to Broken Arrow with its 2014-2015 Spotlight Series, with only three shows remaining! The series continues with the Tony-winning musical “Anything Goes” on January 25, the Oklahoma premier of “Peter and the Starcatcher” on February 24, and concludes with The Midtown Men on April 17. Tickets are on sale now at the BAPAC Box Office located at 701 S. Main in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at (918) 2595778, Monday through Friday. Patrons can also visit www.brokenarrowpac.com or the BAPAC Facebook page at facebook.com/ brokenarrowpac for show updates and more. All aboard! The saucy and splendid production of “Anything

Goes” is a winner of three 2011 Tony awards including Best Musical Revival and Choreography, and is making its way to Broken Arrow on January 25. This musical is about crazy antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Peppering this Cole Porter first-class comedy are some of musical theater’s most memorable standards, including “I Get a Kick out of You,” “You’re the Top,” and of course, “Anything Goes.” The AP exclaims it as, “So DELIGHTFUL, So DELICIOUS, So DE-LOVELY!” For the first time in Spotlight Series history, the BAPAC Foundation is welcoming a play to its lineup. The grownup’s prequel

www.ValueNews.com to Peter Pan called “Peter and the Starcatcher” flies through Broken Arrow on February 24. Hailed by The New York Times as “the most exhilarating storytelling on Broadway in decades,” this comedy takes a hilarious romp through Neverland. Winner of five Tony awards, this is the innovative and imaginative play based on the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. A company of a dozen actors play more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up? On April 17, The Midtown Men close out the sixth annual

BAPAC Foundation Spotlight Series. This sensational production reunites four stars from the original cast of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys.” Tony award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony award nominee J. Robert Spencer star in this one-of-a-kind concert experience celebrating the music that defined the ‘60s. These talented entertainers shared the Broadway stage for more than a 1,000 performances in the megahit “Jersey Boys.” Now as The Midtown Men, they have thrilled crowds on concert stages and symphony halls across the continent and have delighted television audiences with performances on “Good Morning America,” “Access Hollywood,” “Katie” and “The Chew.” Additionally, the Men collaborated with rock ‘n’ roll icon Stevie Van Zandt on their first radio single, “All Alone On Christmas,” featuring Van Zandt and members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. The group also had the distinct honor of opening the National Tree Lighting Ceremony at the White House.

Compete or Eat at Soul Food Cook-Off

Enjoy delicious meats, vegetables, desserts, breads and more made by the finest soul food chefs around at the 9th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off.

If you consider yourself a top notch soul food cook, you still have time to enter the Cook-Off.

By Sheryl Sowell

The 9th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food CookOff will take place at the Muskogee Civic Center, January 17, 2015. So far, dozens of chefs have registered for the event and will prepare their delicious soul food cuisine for thousands of attendees to enjoy. “The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off is the perfect venue to celebrate the rich African American heritage of soul food,” says Cassandra Gaines, event creator and marketing director of the Muskogee Civic Center. “Soul food is simply comfort food made from scratch – sweet potato pie, smothered chicken and rice, smothered pork chops, homemade macaroni and cheese, greens, hot water corn bread, candied yams, peach cobbler. We bring together a diverse community of people who enjoy the tradition of enjoying good food together and having fun.” One of Cassandra’s responsibilities as marketing

director of the Civic Center is to host multicultural community events. In 2004, she had the idea for a soul food cook-off to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea quickly caught on and is now spreading across the country. In each city, the event has featured some of the finest local chefs, until now unheralded, serving soul food to a sell-out crowd. Chefs from around the state and country are invited to participate in the cook-off. Categories include meats, vegetables, desserts, homemade breads, and miscellaneous homemade items, such as pickles, pickled okra, jellies, jams, hot sauce and barbecue sauce. Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each category. “We have even more people participating this year because the prize money is so high,” says Cassandra. A cash prize for best booth decoration and costume will also be awarded. “Anybody who thinks they can cook is welcome. We have cooks of all ages and from all walks of life,” Cassandra explains. “We have many first-timers and many who return year after year.” The judging panel for the cook-off consists of professionals who either own or

manage a restaurant. “The judges are different every year, and the cooks do not know who the judges are. It’s a fair game for everyone,” Cassandra says. “There is also a people’s choice award so those who attend can vote for their favorite dish.” If you’re not the best cook but love some good soul food, admission to the event is $8, and includes all the delicious food you can handle. “This family-friendly event is guaranteed to produce fond memories and plenty of full stomachs,” says Cassandra. The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will be held Saturday, January 17 at the Muskogee Civic Center, located at 425 Boston St. The afternoon features great food, fun, cash prizes and an educational component regarding the history of soul food and cooking tips from some of the country’s top chefs.
