Dr. Steven Hardage offers tips to help children and teens prevent or limit sportsrelated injuries. By Carol Beck-Round

Dr. Steven Hardage at Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center in Claremore points out a stress fracture on a patient’s X-ray.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, participation in organized sports is on the rise. Nearly 30 million children and adolescents now participate in youth sports in the United States. While many of the injuries are related to overuse, more than half of all sports injuries in children are preventable. Dr. Steven Hardage, whose specialty is primary care sports medicine with the Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center in Claremore, wants to see more sports injury prevention emphasized. “Because kids are playing sports year-round and participating in lots of different sports, we are seeing more injuries than we used to,” says Dr. Hardage, whose children also participate in sports. “I think, as parents, we can help our children prevent those injuries.” To help your youngster or teenager prevent or limit sports injuries, Dr. Hardage offers the

Felts Shoes offers a variety of gift ideas for the holidays, including a wide array of boots. By Carol Beck-Round Voted the best shoe store in Claremore for many years, Felts Shoes is also a great place to purchase Christmas gifts or pick out footwear for all of your family needs. Not only is Christmas just around the corner, but winter weather means boots. UGGs are still highly popular, along with Born, Clarks and Madden Girl. “UGGs continue to be popular year after year,” says Tabitha Felts, third generation owner. The Claremore store, located in Ne-Mar Center, opened in November of 1997. The UGG brand, founded by a young Australian surfer in Southern California, was forged

by the Aussie’s strong love for sheepskin. He was convinced the world would one day share this love – and it has. Because the warm boots continue to draw people, Tabitha wants to make sure her customers have access to the popular footwear. Felts carries UGGs for women, girls and men, and the boots come in a variety of styles and colors to suit even the most discriminating of wearers. “We have a wide assortment of all kinds of boots for men and women,” she adds. For those who love boots in rich, premium leathers and arti(continued on page 24)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Before You Start Pushing Up Daisies…. Are Your Ducks in a Row? BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Now, unless you plan to spend all your kids’ inheritance or you purposefully want to leave them a big mess, you need to do some proper estate planning. I can’t begin to tell you how many smart people make really dumb mistakes when it comes to trying to protect their money during their senior years and transfer it to their kids upon their death. Sometimes it is out of ignorance, and sometimes it is just trying to be pennywise and ending up pound foolish. The following are the top 7 mistakes I have seen people make: • I got my Will off the Internet. • My friend told me I should put my child on all my accounts to make sure my bills get paid if I become ill. • I have a Will, so my estate won’t go through probate. • I have a child who can’t handle money, so I am giving everything to my brother and he will take care of my child. • My situation is very simple…I don’t need estate planning. • If I leave everything to my spouse, there is no tax. • We don’t need any long term care insurance; our kids will take care of us. I have seen some pretty flubbed up estate planning. I would certainly give a second thought to doing your Will on the Internet. This is an important document and you want to pay the money to make sure it is done correctly. Unless you have a Trust, your

estate will go through probate. Please hear me…a Will does NOT exempt your estate from probate. While putting your child on your bank accounts will allow them to have access to your account to pay your bills if you become unable to do so, it can potentially be a poor choice. If your son or daughter gets in an accident and is sued and their name is on your account, it could be a bad choice. If your son or daughter gets a divorce and their name is on your account, it could be a bad choice. If your goal is for them to have access to your account to pay your bills if you become ill, you can accomplish this with a simple Power of Attorney. If your goal is for them to get the account when you die without going through probate, you can accomplish this by either setting the account up as a TOD (Transfer on Death) and it will cost you nothing, or through establishing a Trust. If one of your children can’t handle money, get a Trust. Don’t assume that your brother Billy (or his

wife) will handle everything exactly as you would like. Money has a strange way of convincing folks to do otherwise. If you leave everything to your spouse, they will still have to pay taxes on your IRA assets. However, if you choose them as the beneficiary on your IRAs, they will be able to take the money out over time rather than all at once, which will save them in taxes. You don’t want your children changing your diapers. Your spouse may not be able to take care of you. Get long term care insurance so that it doesn’t leave your spouse in poverty. Regardless of the amount of money or stuff you have, it is worth getting it to the people you would want to have it when you die. I’m sure you don’t have Uncle Sam at the top of your beneficiary list. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918272-1120. Santa Claus is Coming to Will Rogers Memorial Museum

Jolly Old Saint Nick will visit Saturdays, December 3, 13 and 20. By Pat Reeder

Connor, Logan and Blake Jones put their Christmas order in early when Santa (Neil Thielen) stopped by the Will Rogers Memorial Museum to make plans to slip down the Heritage Gallery chimney the first three Saturdays in December. Admission to the Museum will be free those days.

Santa Claus will visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum three Saturdays in December when admission will be free to all. Tad Jones, museum director, said Santa Claus will be in the museum from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. on December 6, 13 and 20 to talk with children (and adults). Santa will be seated by the fireplace in the Heritage Gallery. Parents are invited to take photos. “We want to invite families to bring their children to visit Santa, tour the museum and shop our Museum Store to find great deals on Christmas gifts,” said Tad Jones, director. The Museum Store sale, that started with Will Rogers Days, will continue until the end of the year with T-shirts

“For Christmas, we’re also adding cranberry fudge, egg nog fudge and chocolate orange swirl,” says Hazel. “We’ll also ship boxes of fudge anywhere you want us to.” All Christmas items, including whole and cracked pecans, can also be mailed anywhere. “We try to get the best shipping rate possible for our customers,” she adds. “We also have lots of beautiful ornaments for all tastes,” Hazel says. “Some like to shop and purchase a new ornament each Christmas. I would always buy a new one for my children each year.” Tree decorations available fit just about everyone’s taste, including the glitzy, the collegiate, old-fashioned and rustic, woodsy ornaments. Check out the trees on display in the store for ideas. Christmas décor runs the gamut from large snowmen, including those for OSU and OU fans, to more traditional decorations like reindeer. In fact, the store’s variety of quality gifts and décor will delight you, from the unique to the quirky, including Santa Claus cookie jars, holiday wine glasses and cozies, coffee mugs, serving dishes and candy dishes, all perfect for giving or for your own use.

Don’t have time to make a pecan or pumpkin pie for your holiday table? Call The Nut House and order yours by December 18. Need cookies? The Nut House offers snickerdoodle, chocolate chip and peanut butter. Need party trays, including meat, cheese and veggies? The Nut House can provide those too. “Whatever someone needs for their holiday parties, we can supply,” she adds. “If businesses have a corporate need for gifts, we can also fix up trays or metal tins of nuts and candy.” According to Hazel, shopping at The Nut House is a relaxing experience. “Customers should feel comfortable while shopping and not be pressured and faced with huge crowds and harried clerks.”

OOklahoma Author Releases New Book “Nana’s 3 Jars: Giving Generously” teaches children the value of money and the importance of giving to others. By Sheryl Sowell

Oklahoma syndicated columnist, author and inspirational speaker Carol Round has released her first children’s book, “Nana’s 3 Jars: Giving Generously,” just in time for Christmas giving. The book is the first in a series of three to teach children about giving, saving and spending.

In a media-saturated world focused on having more, it’s sometimes difficult for adults to teach children about the value of money, especially at Christmas time. Commercials for new toys, video games and other merchandise can distract us from the real meaning of Christmas. Without preaching, Christian author, syndicated columnist and inspirational speaker Carol Round has released the first in a series of three books to teach children about giving, saving and spending. “I wanted to use storytelling to engage children with parents and grandparents to understand the real value of money and its importance,” says Carol. “I chose ‘Nana’s 3 Jars’ to create a dialogue between children and adults. The first book in the series, ‘Giving Generously,’ focuses on giving. “Charlie and Emma, the young characters in the story, are excited because they’re headed to Nana’s home in the country for the day,” says Ms. Round. “Nana, who is known for her prizewinning recipes at the county fair each year, offers cookies and milk for a treat when they first arrive. As the youngsters eat their cookies, they notice three jars filled

with coins on Nana’s countertop. Each jar has a different label – giving, saving and spending. When the sister and brother question Nana about the purpose of the jars, she explains each. “In the first book,” Ms. Round adds, “the children learn about the joy of giving when they make chocolate chip cookies to hand out at a local veterans’ center. I’ve done this with my three grandchildren and they always love it – not only helping to make the cookies, but handing them out as well. We’ve also done this at local nursing homes, and I think my grandchildren are as excited and blessed as the veterans and residents of the facilities we visit.” The book series was born out of her love of helping others and of teaching her grandchildren about giving, saving and spending. “I can recall my experiences as a child,” she adds, “when my sister and I would help our grandmother make jams and jellies. When finished, we could select our favorite and also give them away as gifts. I can also recall poking holes in the lids of empty jars and capturing fireflies. My sister and I would set them on the window sill at night to watch them glow.

By mentioning this in the book, it brings back memories for adults who did this same thing. You don’t see as many fireflies today as you did when I grew up.” “Giving Generously” is interactive and includes an original chocolate chip recipe in the back of the book as well as three labels – giving, saving and spending – so children can make cookies to hand out and start putting coins in their own jars. To purchase a copy of “Nana’s 3 Jars: Giving Generously,” contact the author at carolaround@yahoo.com. The book is also available on Amazon.com. Ms. Round resides in Claremore and is also available to speak in elementary classrooms and to other children’s groups.

EExclusive Gifts at J&J J&J Pharmacy and Gifts has added new product lines and continues to carry traditional favorites such as Mark Robert Fairies for the holidays. By Carol Beck-Round

Christmas shopping is always fun at J&J Pharmacy and Gifts, where store manager Mary Kate Bollman and sales clerk Jane Dearman look forward to meeting their customers’ gift and decorating needs every day.

Christmas shopping at J&J Pharmacy and Gifts is always fun, as the store carries many exclusive lines not found anywhere else in town. Located in Claremore’s Ne-Mar Shopping Center, the business is a cornucopia of merchandise to delight anyone on your gift list. Mary Kate Bollman, store manager, is excited about Christmas and the array of wonderful items new to the store, as well as traditional favorites for local shoppers. La Vie bracelets by Catherine Popesco are new this year. “We are an exclusive dealership in Claremore,” says Bollman. The Swarovski crystal bracelets are made of the finest Australian crystal available. The store also carries La Vie earrings and necklaces to delight the special woman on your list. The store also carries many other jewelry choices, which make great stocking stuffers. Other stocking stuffer ideas include collegiate items as well as Disney “Frozen” charm bracelets and necklaces for little girls. “We also have many pretty baby items,” she adds. Mark Robert Fairies, numbered Christmas collectibles, have been selling out worldwide since 1984. The décor celebrates the

magic of Christmas, and J&J is the only place to buy them in Claremore. “We always have people coming in asking for them,” she says. Another popular collectible is the line of Santa Clauses created by Karen Didion. Each Santa Claus has a beautiful hand-painted porcelain face with real wool beard. “They are really pretty,” Bollman adds. “We do have a wide array of Christmas décor, including ornaments.” J&J is also carries Vera Bradley personal accessories. With two new patterns now available, you don’t have to leave town to find what you’re looking for. “We can get what you want if we don’t have it in stock,” she says. Having trouble deciding what to buy that special someone? Why not purchase a variety of food and drink items to fill a basket? You can choose from Wind & Willow dips, packages of Neighbors Coffee, Cocoa Amore mixes, Wine-ARita mixes, Aspen Mulling Cider Spices or No Bake Simple-to-Mix dips to top your party crackers. You could even toss in a cookbook, also available at J&J. Tyler candles and Mixer Melt pots make great Christmas gifts or to add to the ambience of your

own house for the season. With many holiday fragrances available, you’re sure to find just the right one. If you’re having trouble deciding what to purchase for that special someone in your life, you can always purchase a gift certificate in any denomination. “We also offer free gift wrapping with the purchase of a gift,” says Bollman. “And, when you do make a purchase, you can also sign up for a drawing for a large stuffed snowman.” For more unique gift ideas, take your Christmas list and head to J&J Pharmacy and Gifts. “We look forward to seeing everyone during the holiday season,” she says, “and we’re here to help you with your shopping needs.”

IIt’s Unique

at Vintique

Vintique Charm offers a smorgasbord of gift ideas, painting projects, DIY classes and 15 vendor booths in 4,500 square feet of fun. By Carol Beck-Round Downtown Claremore may be a smorgasbord of shops, but Sheila Giannelli, owner of Vintique Charm, is proud that her shop really does focus on being unique. With 4,500 square feet of floor space to fill, her business offers handmade furniture, 15 vendor booths (no duplicates), handmade signs, a kids’ boutique for ages 3 to 14, tutus, bows and headbands, women’s clothing and jewelry, as well as modern, retro, vintage and antique furniture. Vintique Charm is also a retailer for Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. “Chalk Paint® is an acrylic water-based paint,” says Sheila. “It contains no plaster or grout and requires no sanding or priming. Because this is not a latex paint, you don’t have to worry about the wood being unable to breathe. When a latex paint is applied, it eventually causes the furniture to crack.” Not only does the store carry the products, they offer Chalk Paint® classes every other Monday or by

appointment. “We also custom paint furniture,” she adds. The store also carries Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and General Finishes as well as stains, top coats and just recently added Java Gel, which has been formulated to produce a beautiful handrubbed finish. In addition to paint classes, the store offers Pinterest parties twice a month. “We do projects together, usually in the $25 to $35 range,” she says. To find out what Pinterest projects are planned, be sure and check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/vintiquecharm. Sheila believes in carrying as many “Made in the U.S.A.” products as possible. “I’d say at least 90 percent of the merchandise we have in our store is made in America,” she adds. With Christmas shopping on people’s minds, Vintique Charm is a perfect place to find a gift – all very affordable – for that special

Vintique Charm, known for its blend of handmade furniture, painting classes and DIY classes, also offers ladies the opportunity to shop quality clothing at reasonable prices. Sheila Giannelli believes in helping women look and feel their best. person. “I never carry anything over $42,” she says. Sheila also does not carry products that can be found at other local businesses. “That’s why Vintique Charm is unique,” she adds. A new product on the shelves is a line of body care products, lotions and body balms that are not only 100 percent natural, but can only be found at Vintique

Charm. “The line, called KOPA Naturals, is comparable to the more expensive Lush line found at the mall. However, this product is very affordable and really is all-natural.” Whether you’re looking for custom furniture, do-it-yourself products, jewelry, clothing, home décor or gift ideas, be sure and check out Vintique Charm.

surviving spouse moves to another state or the trust organization reorganizes or merges)? Flexibility is a key consideration. To ensure privacy. Privacy is often overlooked as a priority for estate planning but it’s extremely important. Elderly individuals are often targets of fraudulent solicitations and schemes. If an estate plan can preserve a couple’s privacy, it may help protect the surviving spouse from being targeted. Assets are subject to probate, which are public records and can be viewed by anyone. Look into a Revocable Living Trust, which avoids probate and ensures privacy for the family. Estate planning is not just for the wealthy. If you own property of any type – homes, cars, bank accounts, investments, collectibles – you need an estate plan. Not sure how to begin? Talk to your accountant or local bank representative about trust considerations. DDonating Dental Services Eastern Oklahoma Donated Dental Services provided $4.4 million in no-fee dental treatment last year to disabled and elderly low-income clients. Elderly clients must be 65 By Duane Blankenship In 2003, after severing relations with D-Dent, an existing donated dental service organization based in Oklahoma City, two women representing the Tulsa branch came to the executive board of the Tulsa County Dental Society (TCDS) with a plea to maintain a Tulsa office and provide local residents with donated dental services. A task force committee was established to research the feasibility of establishing a new organization in Tulsa and to determine the demand to provide local residents with donated dental services. Michael A. Kincaid, DDS, was vice president of the TCDS and acknowledged that Tulsa should have an organization to administer care for residents 65 years of age and older who were physically or mentally disabled and financially challenged. After determining the overwhelming need for an active Tulsabased donated dental services organization, Eastern Oklahoma Donated Dental Services, Inc. (EODDS) was established. The non-profit was formed to serve the eastern half of Oklahoma and was granted 501(c)(3) status by the end of 2003. EODDS Executive Director Michael Smith, PhD, says,

Eastern Oklahoma Donated Dental Services staff members include (L to R): Financial Department Manager Terry Hadley, Executive Director Michael Smith, and Program Coordinators Jill Ann Meador and Jade Ward. “Running full speed ahead, the newly formed organization enlisted approximately 140 Tulsa area dentists volunteering to work in conjunction with EODDS to provide no-fee services for Oklahomans, primarily in Tulsa and surrounding areas. Additionally, two representatives of International Dental Arts Laboratory agreed to serve on the EODDS Board of Directors and provide necessary laboratory procedures for EODDS patients at a reduced cost.” Since inception, in accordance with non-profit status regulations, all monies received from

funding sources have been used to pay laboratory fees, administrative compensations, and EODDS business sanctioned events. In 2013, just 10 years after inception, EODDS averaged over $4,400,000 in care provided by 320 dentists. This figure represents more donated care than California, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania and Florida combined for the same period. EODDS is the largest non-profit donated dental service in the world and has grown to that distinction in less than a decade. This truly “feel good” story has impacted the lives

of over 10,000 patients by providing 20 million dollars worth of dental services in its first 10 years. Today, the purpose of EODDS is to connect volunteer dentists with patients in the 918 and 539 area code regions in need of dental care (especially dentures) that they cannot afford. Clients must be physically or mentally disabled, low-income, and drawing their Social Security Disability (SSD) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Clients may not have any savings accounts, CDs, trust accounts, IRAs or any other means of paying for dental care.

years of age or older and lowincome. Clients may not have any savings accounts, CDs, trust accounts, IRAs or any other means of paying for dental care, and all clients must meet the current year Annual Federal Poverty Guideline. Executive Director Smith expressed his gratitude to the more than 19 foundations, trusts and organizations that are EODDS funders and have been faithful to the cause since its beginnings in 2003. “Without their support and the benevolent dentists participating in the program, EODDS would not exist. We thank them all.” You may contact the EODDS office for an application or download one from the website and mail it in if you believe you or someone you know may qualify for services. 88th Annual Live Nativity King of Kings Lutheran Church presents its annual Christmas celebration December 13 and 14.

By Sheryl Sowell As we prepare to spend the next month decorating our homes and Christmas trees and purchasing gifts for loved ones, King of Kings Lutheran Church in Glenpool calls us all to remember the true purpose of the Christmas season. In an effort to carry out the mission to celebrate the birth of Christ, King of Kings will be presenting a live nativity scene on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each night, in the field just southeast of 151st Street and Highway 75. Complete with costumed actors, sheep, camels, a donkey and a stable, the live nativity depicts the story of Christ’s birth from the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary, through the arrival of the three wise men. Pastor Rick Tabisz will narrate the Christmas story while the actors illustrate the journey, conflicts and celebration that the family experiences. At the end of the presentation, audience members are invited to sing “Silent Night” and warm up with hot cocoa and cookies while petting the animals and visiting with the cast. “The live nativity is a simple reenactment of the birth of Christ that everyone in the family will enjoy. Several families have told me they make this a

part of their Christmas traditions every year,” said Pat Bartley, co-chair of the public relations committee. “When we all sing together at the end of the performance, it creates a truly beautiful, peaceful feeling within.” The presentation itself will last for approximately 30 minutes, and it is performed regardless of

the plunging temperatures. Seating is provided, but Bartley urges spectators, “Please dress appropriately and bring blankets. The metal bleachers are very cold.” The live nativity takes place on 13 acres located on the southeast side of Highway 75 and 151st Street in Glenpool. Please arrive early to find seating. Porta-Potties

will also be available. This is the eighth year that King of Kings Lutheran Church has presented the live nativity. “We are a missionary church,” Bartley says. “This is our small way of sharing Christ’s love with the community. Our goal is to capture the feel of our Savior’s birth. It isn’t about commercializa-

tion; it is about the simplicity and the joy of the occasion.” This project is free to the community, and funding comes from both the congregation and Thrivent Financial, an organization that does much more than offer financial services. They also offer outreach opportunities that enable members to help their communities and congregations. “The entire presentation is a testament to the season. The volunteerism that it requires is truly indicative of the Christmas spirit,” says Bartley. “We look forward to you joining with us in thanksgiving as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ: Son of God, King of Kings, Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, and yes, the real ‘reason for this season’ of Christmas.”

Athletic Injuries on the Rise following tips: Take time off for rest. Encourage your child to take a couple of days each week to rest and give the body time to recover. “My biggest concern,” says Dr. Hardage, “is the fact that so many sports now overlap. For example, there are athletes playing football and competitive soccer at the same time. This causes increased demand on the body and an increased risk of overuse, which can lead to injuries such as stress fractures and strains.” Along with that is the importance of parents listening to their kids’ complaints about pain. “If they are complaining about pain, take them seriously and make

sure they get plenty of rest,” he adds. Another factor to consider is conditioning, flexibility and strengthening. “Kids need to gradually build up to an activity or sport instead of jumping in, especially in sports such as baseball where there is a lot of repetitive activity,” he says. “The body needs time to get used to the activity. Coordination, strength and balance activities can also help in injury prevention.” The third factor to consider is appropriate protective equipment and appropriate technique for the individual sport activity. “It’s important that kids receive the right coaching to limit injury, such as

continued from page 1 proper throwing mechanics for baseball players and the need to keep the head up while hitting during football,” Dr. Hardage says. He also reminds parents that it is not a good idea to hand down older equipment from an older brother or sister to the next child. “It’s very important that equipment is properly fitted to the child, especially in sports like football and lacrosse,” he adds. The fourth tip he offers is for young athletes to take a break from a specific sport. “Many youngsters are playing the same sport year-round. With that comes repetitive stress on the same body parts, which in turn leads to an increased risk of injury.” To avoid this type of risk, Dr.

Feeling the Holiday Shopping Stress? and invite them to come in and shop from the personal wish list. It makes Christmas shopping so much easier and less stressful. Instead of running in a store and just grabbing something at the last minute, our service helps shoppers purchase meaningful gifts for their loved ones.” Susan and Cari are also prepared to ask questions of those who are shopping for a loved one and don’t have the benefit of a personal shopping list to go by. “We know the key questions to ask,” says Susan. “By asking questions concerning an individual’s likes and dislikes, we can narrow down the choices.” Choices in clothing, jewelry and other accessories are offered at The District on Main. The upscale boutique carries popular brands like Brighton, which includes jewelry, handbags, watches, sunglasses and charms. “We also carry a customized line of Brighton jewelry called Your True Colors,” says Cari. Other popular items are Fossil handbags and watches, as well as Kendra Scott

jewelry. Rifle is another popular brand that offers journals, phone cases, recipe boxes and note pads. Other Christmas gift ideas include locally-made custom engraved cutting boards and cell phone cases. The boutique carries a wide array of clothing, perfect for the holidays. And if you’re attending a Christmas or New Year’s party, check out the fashionable apparel and accessories offered. What you find at The District is a wide array of affordable merchandise, often seen only in upscale department stores. You’ll find Southern Marsh, Lauren James, Jadelynn Brooke and the Lucky Brand. “We have a wide variety of merchandise, including menswear,” says Cari. “No matter what your budget, we can help you select the perfect gift for that special person.” Other gift-giving ideas include Christmas shirts, Aspen Bay candles and collegiate items. “We have new arrivals daily, including clothing brands like Tribal, Judith March and Missy

Robertson,” adds Susan. “We are here to personally help shoppers select the perfect gift for that special person in their life,” says Cari. “You don’t have to leave Claremore and fight the crowds in a larger town to do your Christmas shopping. By shopping local, you keep our tax dollars here in Rogers County. Beautiful Lighted Holiday Displays for 2014 Two free drive-through events are happening in Muskogee – Castle Christmas at The Castle of Muskogee and The Garden of Lights at Honor Heights Park, open Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Eve.

By Sheryl Sowell Celebrate the best of family holiday traditions at The Castle of Muskogee. Take a leisurely drive through Castleton Village, filled with over 2,000 holiday lighted displays. The drivethrough is free, and donations are gratefully accepted. Outside The Castle, you can take a hayride or a carriage ride through the Village, or ride the ponies or the camel. Come inside The Castle for old-fashioned family holiday activities: bring your kids to make ornaments in Santa’s workshop, warm up by the fireplace, and plan your visit with Father Christmas. Horse-drawn carriage rides

start in the parking lot of The Castle and travel through a part of the village that is not accessible to cars, so you will see different displays than on the drive-through

route. Cost is $10 per adult, $5 per child, or take advantage of the Family Pack, $25 for up to 5 people. Tractor-drawn hayrides start in the parking lot of The Castle

and also travel through the village on a different route than the car drive-through. These depart every half hour. Cost is $5 per person, children 12 and under are free. Pony rides are a holiday favorite and cost $5 per child. Camel rides are a fun, exotic way to travel. Be one of the Three Kings for $5 per person. Shop local while at The Castle. Stop in for some holiday shopping with our Made In Oklahoma merchants and find something unique for yourself and your loved ones. You can also get fireworks for New Year’s Eve celebrations and items from The Christmas Shoppe for your own holiday displays. Father

Christmas will be at the Castle on Fridays and Saturdays from December 5 through December 20 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There is no cost to talk to Father Christmas, and pictures will be available for a nominal fee. Be sure to stop into the Royal Garden Cafe for a light supper or snack, hot chocolate and treats, and great company. Sit and enjoy holiday movies for the whole family. The Castle’s additional events are open November 27-30, December 4-7 and every night December 11-31. In nearby Honor Heights Park, the Garden of Lights attracts thousands of visitors. The celebration includes a free drive-through display of over a million shimmering lights displayed throughout the park. Internationally known for its Azalea Festival, Honor Heights Park draws up to a half million visitors annually to its 122 acres, which are planted with more than 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees, beautifully situated among the park’s scenic hilltop drive. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls, and ponds. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. nightly, and the event is free.

TThink Pink for the Holidays Claremore’s famous Pink House restaurant and tea house offers busy people help with their holiday baking as well as unique gift ideas. By Carol Beck-Round With our busy lives, it’s often difficult to find time to do everything we’d like for the holidays. Baking might be at the top of your list, but with gift shopping, decorating, parties and other activities, finding time to get in the kitchen to prepare your favorite desserts from scratch isn’t easy. Margo Stewart, owner of The Pink House, and her daughter, Shari Beguin, have the answer to make your holiday season less stressful. “We’re offering a variety of baked goodies and desserts for the Christmas season,” says Margo. Pumpkin, pecan and coconut cream pies as well as layered desserts, banana bread and The Pink House’s famous baked fudge are just a few of the goodies available. “If we can provide pies and other baked goods to help free up busy people who don’t have time to prepare homemade desserts, we are always happy to help,” says Margo. “I love Christmas and I love to serve others.” Many other items will be available, and Margo invites you to give them a call to find out what goodies are baking in their kitchen. However, if you want

to make sure you get your order placed on time, you need to call (918) 3422544 by December 22. “The earlier you place your order, the better. We will be open for lunch on Christmas Eve day, but all baked goods orders must be placed two days prior,” she adds. “We’ll be closed December 25th through the 28th and reopen on the 29th.” Christmas shopping at The Pink House might not cross your mind, but Margo is excited about the teas from the Metropolitan Tea Company available to purchase for yourself or for a friend who is a connoisseur of teas. For a chocolate lover friend, consider purchasing a baked fudge kit. Who doesn’t love The Pink House’s baked fudge? Another gift idea is a cookbook titled “Tea & Sweets: Fabulous Desserts for Afternoon Tea.” What makes this cookbook special? It includes The Pink House recipe for Butterscotch-Praline Layer Dessert and includes a brief history of the restaurant. Margo and her staff love offering new menu items throughout the year. Wintertime means seasonal desserts and hot chocolate as well as hearty soups. While the restaurant will be closed

Margo Stewart, left, and her daughter, Shari Beguin, love making their customers happy.

on New Year’s Day, they’re looking forward to new things in the New Year. “We’re planning a Murder Mystery, hopefully in January,” Margo adds. The New Year will also see the return of Shari’s pie crust baking classes and possibly a scone making class. The Pink House will also continue to offer dinner on Friday nights from 5 to 8 p.m., with three specials, including rib-eye steaks and the regular menu.

BBAPAC Captures Spirit of the Season Celebrate the holidays at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center with three upcoming shows.

By Christina Dixon It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center is spreading holiday cheer by offering three unique shows in December, including an evening with country crooner Lee Ann Womack on December 5, a Broken Arrow favorite, “A Time for Christmas 3,” starring BAPAC Executive Director Mark Frie and friends on December 13, and contemporary artist Debby Boone on December 19. “The holiday spirit is alive and well every year at the BAPAC,” said Mark Frie, executive director. “Whether we are bringing in award-winning stars from abroad or celebrating our hometown with local performers, the magic of the season is captured on our stage with shows guaranteed to get the whole family in the holiday mood.” On Friday, December 5, the BAPAC welcomes multi-award winning country artist Lee Ann Womack to the Rose District for a holiday concert for the ages. After spending many years as a professional songwriter, Lee Ann Womack became one of the most popular contemporary country artists of 1997 with her eponymous self-titled debut album.

From there, her success only grew with albums such as “I Hope You Dance” and “Something Worth Leaving Behind.” Presently, Womack has released six albums and has sold more than six

million worldwide. She has also been honored with five Academy of Country Music awards, five Country Music Association awards and a Grammy award. Continuing the seasonal
