Military Appreciation Monday Golden Corral in Claremore will provide a free dinner buffet and beverage for veterans and those on active military duty to celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, November 12 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Neely Insurance and Financial Services prides itself in offering the same level of customer service it did in the 1950s.

By Lorrie Ward For over a decade, Golden Corral restaurants across the nation have honored American veterans with a free “thank you” dinner on Veterans Day. This hand of gratitude and friendship has been extended to over 3.2 million veterans, and as the event marks its 12th year, the restaurant hopes to yet again increase those numbers. Ron and Jennifer Barnett have owned the Golden Corral in Claremore since 2001, and both worked for several years at the Golden Corral in Lawton, which is where they met. Even though Claremore’s Golden Corral is one of the smallest in the nation, Ron reports that it consistently raises six to seven thousand dollars a year during this event. “For a small Golden Corral, that is a lot,” says Ron.

For almost three decades, Candi Czapansky has been one of the smiling faces at the Rogers County Court Clerk’s office. Since Czapansky first walked through the courthouse doors in 1980, she has become familiar with all aspects of the office through her work in the various departments. In 1996, Rogers County voters revealed their confidence in Czapansky to run this important county government office by electing her Court Clerk. Since then, their trust in Czapansky’s integrity and ability to run the office efficiently led to her re-election in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

During her tenure as Court Clerk, Czapansky has earned Oklahoma Court Clerk Certification from The Center for Local Government Technology through Oklahoma State University. She has also implemented numerous improvements, leading to a more efficient office. According to Czapansky, Rogers County was one of the first District Courts in the state to use computers. In 1996, Rogers County Courts joined the Supreme Court of Oklahoma computer system, now known as Oklahoma Court Information System. “This is the present system

in which the courts as well as the public can view court dockets, calendars, and more via the Internet at Oklahoma State Courts Network,” says Czapansky. In 2009, the Supreme Court adopted a plan to meet future technology needs of the courts throughout the State of Oklahoma. “As a result of my vast knowledge of the Court Clerk’s office, I was appointed by the Supreme Court in March 2009 to the Civil Subcommittee,” she says. In January 2011, Czapansky’s experience led to her appointment to the (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Count Your Blessings BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

With both Thanksgiving and the presidential election this month, I was challenged with whether to write about gratefulness or the election. Then it occurred to me maybe I should write about being grateful that this election cycle is almost over. I know you will be as relieved as I am not to be bombarded with all the negativity and devisiveness, if nothing else! All kidding aside, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It doesn’t require scrambling around trying to get gifts or messing with lots of decorations. Its sole focus is gathering with friends and family just to eat and be together. It really creates a space that allows us to truly be grateful. We have a tradition in our family where every family member tells specifically all the things they have been grateful for over the last year as we go around the table. Since we don’t live close, it allows me to hear and understand what has been going on in their lives over the past year.

It occurs to me that with most everyone I deal with, we get caught up in the struggles and challenges of everyday life. And while we give thanks in our prayers each day, we should really spend more time focusing and concentrating on all of our blessings. The small, daily blessings that make our lives so much easier, the daily free and priceless gifts that our relationships bring are really what makes life worth living. After all, the more you focus your attention on the good, the more positive you attract. The tendency to focus on negativity in the markets,

disappointment with how you have managed your money, the lack of disciplined savings, what you wish your investments had done, and many other “if onlys”…abound. If you haven’t been satisfied with your current situation with your investments or your money, then stop focusing on what could have been and start doing something about it. If not, next year you will be sitting here thinking and feeling the same way. My dad used to tell me….If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you always got. It’s true. So, count your blessings each and every day. Make decisions to change things that aren’t working for you. Now, take the next step…. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. the following five residential homes: Nate and Lisa Saylor, 14282 E. Glenwood Dr.; Chad and Misty Choat 25116 S. 4150 Rd.; Mike and Arlene Brown, 13825 E. 460 Rd.; Eric and Jamie Kennedy, 14851 E.

holidays according to the personalities of each individual family and are sure to inspire the Christmas spirit in tour attendees. “We had the home at 910 W. 6th St. on the tour last year while it was still under construction as a Habitat for Humanity home,” says Savannah Haddock, club president. “When Ashley volunteered to let us showcase it again, we thought it would be great to bring it back for our attendees to see the completed project. The home will be decorated with inexpensive design ideas that anyone can do, which we think our guests will also appreciate.” The Junior Ocieleta Club was started by philanthropist Ocie Mayberry on September 27, 1956, to give young women an opportunity to work together to support local charity needs. Ocie passed away in 1987, just four years after the first Home Tour. But her legacy lives on as 100 percent of the proceeds from the tour still go to help fund community projects and organizations in Claremore, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA, Claremore Public Schools Foundation, Safenet Services, Bit by Bit, the Manger and Friends of the Library. As an added treat on this 29th tour, Janelle Dover Hankinson, the granddaughter of Ocie Mayberry, will be visiting from Seattle to attend. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to attend this year’s tour,” said Janelle. “It’s a privilege to see the ladies and projects that are inspired by the hard work and

dedication of my grandmother.” Tickets are $10. To purchase tickets visit: Belvidere Mansion, Crafted: An Artisan Boutique, Floral Creations, Gripado's Deli, Hoovers Have All Mall, J&J Pharmacy, Lilack Salon, The Nut House, The Pink House and Uniquely Susie's, or contact a Junior Ocieleta member! “Large groups and bus tours are also welcome, though we do ask that you make advance reservations to save wait time at the homes,” said Haddock. Sponsors of the annual event to date include RCB Bank, Roe Creative, Grand Bank, Community Home Health, Neely Insurance & Financial Services, Crumpton Aviation, Rogers County Abstract, Melton Sales, Walmart and Sander’s Concrete Construction. “We are very appreciative of our generous sponsors. Their contributions pay for ticket printing, advertising and all other expenses associated with the event,” added Haddock. “Thanks to them, all of our proceeds from ticket sales are able to be funneled back into the community, rather than spent on the event itself.” For more information, search Junior Ocieleta Christmas Home Tour on Facebook.

You’ll Have a “Dickens of a Time”

Claremore Main Street hosts the annual Victorian-style celebration in downtown Claremore November 16-17, 2012. By Carol Beck-Round Can you do the Vienna Waltz, the Virginia reel or the Shoddish? Maybe the Grand March or the Polka is more your style. However, it really doesn’t matter if you can dance because Claremore Main Street is kicking off the Christmas season with their annual Dickens on the Boulevard celebration with plenty of family-friendly fun for

everyone. Scheduled for November 16-17 in historic downtown Claremore, the event is a Victorian-themed holiday festival featuring stage entertainment, street dancing, a costume contest, food and more. The vintage festival will begin at 6 on both nights, when the downtown area is blocked off to traffic to allow all participants

to stroll, dance or ride by wagon down the historic streets. Businesses, decorated for the holiday season, will host an open house during the free event. Shoppers can sign up for drawings to receive Dickens Dollars to spend at the participating merchants. “Last year, we gave away between $200 and $300 per night in drawings for Dickens Dollars, which are good at participating merchants,” says Cindy Bissett, Claremore Main Street’s executive director. “It’s a good time to get started on your Christmas shopping.” Visitors will be transported back to the Victorian era with live storefront window displays. Individuals, donned in their extravagantly designed gowns and frock coats, will pose in the windows like mannequins to engage people strolling down the historic sidewalks. For those who want to participate in the fun by wearing a Victorian costume, a contest will be held both nights to determine the Best Dressed. Winners will receive prizes in the following categories: man,

woman, couple, young man, young woman, boy and girl. Onstage entertainment, beginning at 6 each night, will draw the crowd to the middle of the block, while children will enjoy having their photos snapped with Santa Claus for $3. The upper floors of five of Claremore’s historic buildings will come alive on both nights as “Tales from the Top” returns with a guided tour of the upper floors and a “slightly embellished story from Claremore’s past,” says Event Chair Nancy Fitts. “Participants will get to hear a story from a character that is closely associated with the building’s past as they portray their life in early-day Claremore.” This year a new Mystery Twist is being added to the tours. Participants will find a clue at each of the five buildings and can guess the answer to win a prize. A winner will be drawn if more than one entry is correct. Tour participants not only hear the actor’s story but are also allowed to explore on their own. “We don’t clean the upper floor,” says Bissett, “so if you have a dust problem or trouble climbing stairs, this might not be for you.” Due to time constraints, approximately 60 people per night can participate in the Tales from the Top, according to Bissett. Cost for the tours is $5 per person with advance reservations recommended. To make a reservation, call the Claremore Main Street office at (918) 341-5881. Tickets go on

sale November 5. At approximately 8:30 on both nights, those who want to cut loose to the sounds of the Victorian-era music can literally dance in the streets as Dr. Phil Sample, RSU professor, calls the dances, like the Virginia reel. “It’s neat to see the youth participate in such old-fashioned fun,” says Fitts. “It’s a fun, family event and people love it.” Dog Creek Outfitters will be on site with their historic chuck wagon serving up a meal of barbecue and beans, and Perry Dog Café will be on the street selling hot dogs with all the fixings. Kettle corn will also be available for purchase. Other planned activities include the Territorial Marshals Reenactment, a Living Nativity, and displays by period artisans like weavers, blacksmiths, carvers and silversmiths. Area authors will also be on hand signing copies of their books at Boardinghouse Books on the east end of Main Street. “We are also looking for volunteers to help with the event,” says Bissett, “including people to window sit or set up and clean up.” If you’re ready to boogie into the holiday season, put on your dancing shoes and head to Claremore Main Street for Dickens on the Boulevard.

’Tis the Season for Entertainment Robson Performing Arts Center announces a new season of shows, beginning with “Letters Home” on November 16.

By Ruby Quinn Four fantastic touring productions make up the season at the Robson Performing Arts Center. This year’s offerings promise to be unique experiences, including a delicious dinner for you and your Valentine sweetheart. Each show has something different to offer the audience: from a poignant look at what our soldiers are dealing with in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, to a light-hearted hilarious Christmas musical with your favorite songs, to an improvisational-based touring production that sings and acts and takes ideas from the audience to form the musical for the night, to a massive spectacle of dance and song that celebrates the last hundred years of movie cinema. Starting off the season on November 16 is “Letters Home.” This play puts the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq front and center by bringing to life actual letters written by soldiers serving in the Middle East. The play, without politicizing, gives audiences a powerful portrait of the soldiers’ experience in the ongoing war. This play is critically acclaimed and was nom-

inated for a Jefferson Award for “Outstanding New Play.” Christmas is full of merriment and cheer with “Four Guys Named Al; Al Be Home for Christmas” on Saturday, December 15. Don’t miss this hilarious tune-filled holiday hit! Watch our four unlikely heroes battle the elements and give the performance of a lifetime to save Christmas. You’ll have a smile on your face and a tune in your heart with this winning show proudly labeled, “Your mom will love it!” The Robson PAC has the perfect Valentine experience with “Broadway’s Next Hit Musical” on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16. Enjoy dinner in the charming Black Box Theatre, then laugh and clap along in our main theatre for this show straight from New York City. This production abandons the same ol’ song and dance to create a new, fully improvised musical comedy each and every show. Every lyric, melody and dance is made up on the spot to create a show that you’ll find energetic and hilarious. So funny, you will want to

come both days! The show is available without dinner, but you won’t want to miss out on the tenderloin beef medallions, or slow roasted chicken breast, or a vegetarian masterpiece. Saving the biggest extravaganza for last is “Hooray for Hollywood” on Thursday, February 28. Take a nostalgic journey through the most popular musicals of the last 50 years, featuring a cast of 14 wonderful singers and dancers, a six-piece band, and over 300 costume changes. Enjoy film clips of your favorite movies from “Singing in the Rain” and “The Glenn Miller Story” to “Grease,” “Dirty Dancing” and “Titanic.” Watch as “lights, camera, action” unfolds live on stage. Season tickets are now available. For information please call the box office’s new number at (918) 923-4290. For more information, contact

RSU Honors Faculty Excellence In October, eight Rogers State University faculty members were awarded for their contributions in teaching, scholarship/research and service.

By David Hamby Eight Rogers State University faculty members were honored for excellence in teaching, scholarship/research and service during a campus ceremony on Tuesday, October 9. Dr. Mary Mackie, associate professor of English and humanities, was named the recipient of the Pixley Excellence in Education Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon an RSU faculty member. The Pixley award is made possible by the Pixley Endowment for Excellence in Education at RSU. Mackie has taught more than a dozen courses in the decade she has been with RSU, where she has maintained an active research agenda with numerous publications including book chapters, articles and conference presentations/papers. She is the advisor for the campus newspaper, serves as poetry editor for “Cooweescoowee” and has chaired the Humanities Forum for seven years. In addition to the Pixley Award, Mackie also received the Gladys L. and Carl G. Herrington Excellence in Service Award for the School of Liberal Arts during Tuesday’s ceremony.

Dr. Sally Emmons, professor of English and humanities, received the Herrington Excellence in Teaching Award for the School of Liberal Arts. In addition to her teaching in the School of Liberal Arts, she teaches service classes for other RSU departments and schools, and also serves as managing editor of “Cooweescoowee.” In the School of Business and Technology, Dr. Dana Gray received the Pfizer Excellence in Teaching Award, Dr. Peter Macpherson received the Pfizer Excellence in Scholarship/Research Award and Dr. MaryRose Hart received the Pfizer Excellence in Service Award. Gray is an assistant professor of business, who brings extensive business experience to the classroom. The 2008 Pixley Award winner, she integrates real-world learning opportunities for students to bridge theory to practice, allowing students to build a portfolio documenting professional experiences before they graduate. Macpherson is professor and John W. Norman Chair in Business Information

Technology. He recently had three papers accepted for publication dealing with heart modeling and heart/brain interactions, one of which was accepted into the Eighth International Conference on Advances in Fluid Mechanics in Algarve, Portugal in September 2010 and published in the proceedings. In 2011, he had a paper presented at the Modeling in Medicine and Biology Conference in Riga, Latvia. Hart, who serves as associate professor of business, has served on the Faculty Senate and as a member of numerous university committees including curriculum, academic policies and procedures, strategic planning, and United Way. She was the founding faculty member and faculty advisor for the RSU Sigma Beta Delta International Business Honor Society. Win Big for Shopping in Claremore A total of $14,000 will be awarded in the 10th annual Santa Cash promotion.

By Carol Beck-Round Do you need some extra money for holiday spending or for paying off your holiday shopping bills? Then plan your shopping by patronizing Claremore businesses for the 10th annual Santa Cash promotion, which kicks off at noon on Friday, November 9. The annual Claremore Chamber of Commerce’s promotion

encourages people to “shop local” for the holiday season. As in past years, two cash prizes will be awarded to Santa Cash shoppers, on Saturday, December 22 at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs Grandstands, east of Claremore on Highway 20. The grand prize winner will walk away

with a check for $10,000, while the second-place ticketholder will receive a $2,500 check. However, participants must be present to win. “A third drawing of $1,500 in cash does not require you to be present to win,” says Dell Davis, Claremore Chamber of Commerce executive director.

Members of the Claremore Chamber board presented a $10,000 check to last year’s grand prize winners, Kenneth and Sheryl Lewis, at Will Rogers Downs Grandstands. Their winning ticket was from Reasor’s.

www.ValueNews.com The first ticket will be posted on Sunday, December 23 at the Chamber website and in the Claremore Daily Progress on Tuesday, December 25. If the Santa Cash ticket is not presented at the Chamber office for that particular week by Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the noon deadline, a new number will be posted. The final weekly ticket posting, if no winning ticket has been presented, will be on January 23 with a noon deadline on January 30 to claim the prize. “So even if you are out of town or unable to attend the ‘live’ drawing, you still have the opportunity to win $1,500,” Davis adds. “The Santa Cash promotion is two-fold,” says Julie AdamsSimmons, committee chair. “It rewards shoppers and is a boost to local retail and service participants during the holiday season.” Davis adds, “This is a tremendous opportunity to keep holiday sales in our community. Every dollar spent in our community can re-circulate up to seven times, not to mention the benefits of the sales tax dollars working in and for Claremore. Our tax dollars help pay for police, fire services and parks, just to name a few.” Santa Claus sponsor, and host facility, is the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. Other sponsors include Suburban Chevrolet, Mrs. Claus sponsor; Tulsa Federal Credit Union, Candy Cane Ticket sponsor; RCB Bank, BancFirst, Grand Bank, TTCU The Credit Union, Wal-Mart and the Claremore

Daily Progress, Reindeer sponsors. Elves, or ticket locations in Claremore, include Atwoods, Carl’s Coney Island, Claremore Compounding Pharmacy, Claremore Daily Progress, Claremore Tire & Auto Repair, Claremore Chamber, BancFirst, El Maguey Restaurant, Factory Connection, Foutz Chiropractic, Health Center Pharmacy, Heatwave Tanning, Hinds Chiropractic, Grand Bank, J & J Pharmacy, Plum Gold Jewelers, Radio Shack, RCB Bank, Reasor’s, Robertson Tire, Rogers County Blue Star Mothers, Stillwater Milling, Suburban Chevrolet, TTCU The Credit Union, Tulsa Federal Credit Union, US Cellular, Urgent Care, Walgreen’s, Warehouse Market and Westlake Ace Hardware. Will Rogers Downs and Wal-Mart are not ticket outlets. “They are sponsors but do not handle Santa Cash tickets,” Davis says. “Be sure to check our website, www.claremore.org, for the latest updates for additional activities being planned by our host the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs on drawing day,” says Davis.

FFestival of Trees to

Benefit New Facility

Safenet Services decks the halls for its annual holiday fundraiser with hopes of filling the walls of its new shelter. By Cassie Woods This fall, the elves at Safenet Services are particularly busy. In addition to opening a new state-of-the-art facility at the end of October, they are preparing for their biggest fundraiser of the year. The 8th annual Festival of Trees Gala and Auction will be held on Friday, November 30, at Rogers State University’s Centennial Center Ballroom. The silent auction will start the event at 6 p.m., with the live auction to follow. Ticketholders will also enjoy live entertainment, wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres. This year’s Festival of Trees will feature beautifully decorated Christmas trees ranging from four to nine feet tall. Amongst them will be themed trees designed by Cindy of Florals by Teddie Rae in Pryor, Ann Harmon of Ann Harmon’s Designs, and Andy Willis. Local businesses such as RCI Insurance and civic groups such

as the Junior Ocieleta Club will also be providing decorated trees for auction. The committee is currently looking for more tree sponsors as well as table sponsors. “It’s a great way for businesses or groups to get their staff and members involved with a local charity. They can buy a pre-lit tree and have a party to decorate it before the event,” said Tammy Thomas, committee member. “They can even sponsor a corporate table to come see what their creation goes for at auction.” Jim Smith of Smith Family Auctions will once again be the evening’s auctioneer. By attending the Festival of Trees auction, not only will you be helping victims of domestic violence, but you will also be entertained by a superb auctioneer. Jim’s auctioning skills always make the evening fun and exciting. In addition to

the beautiful trees, wreaths, garland, other holiday items, and entertainment items will also be available for auction. A full “Crystal and Ice” tablescape including everything from the place setting for eight, tablecloth, chair décor and centerpiece; four Disney Park Hopper tickets; an Arkansas getaway package; and a limo wine tour for eight sponsored by Crossbow Construction are just some of the items up for grabs. Free next-day delivery to Claremore or Pryor will be available for larger Christmas trees. Due to the time devoted to opening the facility, the Safenet Board of Directors has decided to limit the Festival of Trees to the Friday night Gala and Auction. Corporate tables for eight people are offered at $500. Individual tickets are $35 each and may be purchased at Safenet Services, located at 1219 W.

Dupont, or at the door of the event. All proceeds from the Festival of Trees will go to support women and children of domestic violence. “In the past, our focus was on raising funds to build a new shelter. Now that the dream is a reality, we can focus our fundraising efforts on providing excellent programming for the women and children,” said Susan Wolfenbarger, Safenet Services assistant director. “We went from a 12-bed to a 35-bed facility. While that gives us an increased opportunity to serve, it also increases our need for additional programs and

volunteers.” For tickets, to sponsor a tree, or to buy a corporate table, contact Susan Wolfenbarger at (918) 341-1424. Safenet Services is a 501(c)(3) agency. All donations are tax-deductible, and the Festival of Trees committee will provide donation receipts upon request.

AA Time for Family Check out The Hamlet for your family’s Thanksgiving turkeys, hams and other delicious delights. By Stephanie Reed Shannon Hester, owner of The Hamlet, knows all about the importance of family around the holidays. As a small business owner, she depends on the help of her family to maintain the quality and spirit of the deli. “I couldn’t do it without them. I depend on my family’s support,” Shannon says, and they have made support a standard practice. After Shannon’s father, Gordon Pendergraft, sold The Hamlet in 2003, Shannon was eager to bring the eatery back to the family. Under her ownership, The Hamlet has thrived and evolved. Boasting new gourmet dips, meal starters, and desserts, The Hamlet is no longer relegated to the award-winning honey-kissed hams and smoked meats. They are now offering made-to-order gift baskets that serve as perfect hostess and corporate gifts. Customers can choose from an assortment of Oklahoma-made products and delicacies, or they can ask the friendly staff for recommendations or themed ideas. Can’t pick the gift basket up? Not to worry. The Hamlet ships meats and gift baskets, and they also make deliveries in the

salads and sandwiches. If you can’t make it into the deli, lunch boxes are also available for individuals or corporate meetings. As Thanksgiving approaches, Shannon encourages customers to preorder turkeys and hams. Customers can either call to place an order, or they can order online. “You won’t get a better ham or turkey. We have gone through and inspected each one. They are delicious,” Shannon encourages. Whether you are serving a small family or a family of 36, The Hamlet has plenty of options to meet your needs. They offer hams ranging from 6 to 18 lbs, and turkeys that range from 10 to 14 lbs. With all of her clan’s support, Shannon hopes to pay it forward. “The holidays are all about spending time with family. Let us worry about the preparations. Our meats are so convenient and delicious.” They are precooked and require no preparation – just take it home and serve it. In the upcoming year, look for The Hamlet’s new facelift. Complete with outdoor seating and a fireplace, The Hamlet’s new look will bring the gourmet flavor into the décor as well as the food. For more information, contact

Shannon Hester (right) laughs with her father, Gordon Pendergraft, and sister, Crystal Vivion, at the 91st and Sheridan location. Tulsa metro area. Situated in two convenient locations, 91st and Sheridan and 71st and Trenton, The Hamlet

has been a Tulsa favorite for decades. Known for their spiral-sliced ham and Boar’s Head deli, The Hamlet serves a

noteworthy spiral-cut ham sandwich that has inspired a loyal patronage. The deli is packed with all homemade sides, soups,

CChristmas at the Belvidere

Beginning November 6, the Belvidere Mansion will be transformed into a spectacular Christmas wonderland.

By Lorrie Ward Part of the magic of Christmas is the atmosphere. Some people would even say that joy comes more from seeing the festively wrapped packages beneath a glistening tree than from actually opening the gifts. If you are one of those people who love to experience the beauty and wonder of Christmas in a tangible way, you will want to attend “Christmas at

the Belvidere” and see a landmark already steeped in tradition transformed into a Christmas wonderland where Charles Dickens would feel right at home. Beginning on November 6 and extending through the holiday season, the Belvidere will throw open its doors to reveal Christmas in all its glory. With décor reminiscent of the

A decorated room at the Belvidere Mansion.

Victorian period in which the mansion was built, “it is like something out of a Currier and Ives print – really impressive,” says Morgan Anderssen Williams, buyer and manager of the Belvidere Gift Shop. Each room at the Belvidere will host several trees, with thousands of lights and various themes – everything from traditional Victorian to vintage (red, green and gold) to rustic country, and there will be a peacock themed tree this year also. Since there are four fireplaces in the Belvidere, these will be elaborately decorated in anticipation of Santa’s arrival as well. Rather than simply display beautiful décor, the Belvidere offers visitors the chance to create their own haven of beauty on, around and under the tree, offering ornaments, mantel décor, table toppers, kitchen and hostess gifts, cards, clothes, and jewelry in the downstairs Gift Shop. “We have customers who do ornament exchanges each year,” Morgan relates, “who love to come and choose theirs here.” Even though such items are only available during the holiday season, Morgan and other Rogers County Historical Society members begin shopping for the next holiday

right after the current one is over, so that next year’s selection will be even more varied than in past seasons. The Belvidere will be open late until 8 p.m. during Claremore’s Dickens on the Boulevard (Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17) and Morgan hopes people will stop into view the mansion’s beauty after dusk. “The mansion is so beautiful at night,” she says. “The trees are all lit up so it can be seen to its best effect.” Also on Friday night of Dickens on the Boulevard, Claremore Community Chorus will be performing at the Belvidere. Any Belvidere tour is free, but donations are always gratefully accepted, as they help keep this Claremore treasure open for future generations to enjoy. Morgan also encourages anyone who would like to volunteer hands-on help with decorating to contact RCHS, as it takes a lot of hands to create a holiday wonderland. “You gain a new appreciation for how much work it is do things like stringing lights and setting up trees and fluffing garlands,” she says. “There are volunteers who have been involved since the beginning –

Page 25

Betty Reeves comes every year and will spend hours just fluffing garlands and trees. Peggy Feese and Sandy Coy are working on a unique mantel decoration this year that I can’t wait to see.” Most of all, Morgan hopes that Christmas shoppers will find a little piece of the Belvidere to take home with them to remind them each Christmas of this unique experience. “We hope the Belvidere is a destination for shoppers, as the entire experience can’t be equaled elsewhere,” says Morgan. “You can shop, eat, and enjoy an almost fantasy-like environment: it is just so pretty, and generations of families visit together each year to make a memorable experience.” Don’t miss your chance to see the Belvidere Mansion at night during Dickens on the Boulevard, both Friday and Saturday night, November 16 and 17, when they will be open until 8 p.m. The Belvidere (like many other downtown merchants) is also open in the evening from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month as part of the Downtown First Night promotion. Regular mansion hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Tea Room is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. those days. For more information, contact

AA Crafty Affair Tulsa Herb Society presents Carols and Crumpets on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tulsa Garden Center. By Stephanie Reed With the holiday season fast approaching, it is time for Tulsans to embrace the spirit of warmth and generosity. Tulsa Herb Society’s free holiday fair, Carols and Crumpets, is a festive start to what is sure to be a

fabulous season. Steeped in 22 years of tradition, what began as a formal English Tea has evolved into a festival featuring homemade crafts and foods. Boasting 25 vendors from a four-state area, the bazaar includes

countless homemade novelties and scrumptious treats. Members of Tulsa Herb Society gather once a week throughout the year in order to prepare crafts and food for this special occasion. Eve Joseph,

Tulsa Herb Society President Patsy Wynn and her two committee chairs, Eve Joseph (middle) and Lois Galpin (left), display goods for Carols and Crumpets.

www.ValueNews.com who joined the Tulsa Herb Society in 1996, heads the craft committee. “We get together every Tuesday and make crafts in preparation for Carols and Crumpets,” says Eve. “We brainstorm ideas at the beginning of the year, and we spend the rest of our time creating.” The crafts for sale at the Tulsa Herb Society’s booth include ornaments, pins, pillows, stationery and much more. In addition to the crafts for sale, the craft committee also creates by hand a woolen felt tree, ornament, and tree skirt as a much desired raffle prize. As one may expect from any great garden club, Tulsa Herb Society also sponsors a cut greenery booth. This booth features cut greenery to be used in holiday decorations. These freshly cut arrangements are not only beautiful but also holiday scent sensations. Other local vendors also have items for sale. Renowned artist Maggie Bonanomi will have wool art available for sale, and local herb vendor Jalene Riley of Utopia Gardens will also be on site selling herbs. “Some of our patrons have been coming since Carols and Crumpets was founded 22 years ago,” mentions Patsy Wynn, Tulsa Herb Society’s president. “There is just such a warm, family-friendly atmosphere; it is really a great way to kick off the holiday season.” Other vendors will be selling homemade chocolates, cement leaves, wooden trellises, soaps, pottery, potpourri, dolls and marionettes.

Crafts are not the only treat available. The Tulsa Herb Society also has a cooking crew. These chefs create delectable chutneys, vinegars and jellies; they will also have their third edition cookbook available for sale. Headed by Lois Galpin and Janice Partridge, the cooking committee is renowned for their use of savory herbs in their coveted delicacies. In case shoppers work up an appetite, the Snow Flake Café will be serving lunch, complete with a soup, sandwich, dessert and drink, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the only fundraiser that the Tulsa Herb Society sponsors, and its proceeds are used for a variety of things. Part of the proceeds goes back to the Tulsa Garden Center to be used for maintenance of the historical building and grounds. The Tulsa Herb Society uses the rest of the proceeds to sponsor trips for its members and host educational speakers for Tulsans. As the season rapidly approaches, mark your calendar for the Tulsa Herb Society’s annual fundraiser, Carols and Crumpets, on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Companies Can Go Nuts Over Corporate Gifts The Nut House in Verdigris offers several options for both personal and corporate gifts for this holiday season.

By Cassie Woods The Nut House first opened over 40 years ago selling only native pecans. Since that time, the business has grown to serve individual customers and businesses with nuts, sauces, jellies, candies and gifts. As the holidays approach, the staff at The Nut House is preparing for the season of corporate gift giving. Corporate gifts are similar but somewhat enlarged versions of personal gifts. Items offered to recipients by an organization are meant to serve as an expression of appreciation and goodwill. As the corporate gift industry has grown, The Nut House has worked to establish itself as a great option in this niche market. Local companies that may be shipping to clients in other states often enjoy sending items that represent Oklahoma. The Nut House can fill this need with its Made In Oklahoma items and the popular Oklahoma-shaped basket. Typically, corporate gifts from The Nut House range in price from $25 to $75, but they have done larger baskets up to $150. “It really depends on how much you want to spend and

what kind of items you want, and of course how many people you’re buying gifts for,” said Hazel Ward, The Nut House owner. “The more we buy, the deeper the discount we can get and we are able to pass that

savings on to our corporate customers who buy several gifts.” If presentation is the most important part of your company’s gift, The Nut House staff can help you pick a nice basket or box and build up from there.

Hazel Ward shows off one of the great Oklahoma-themed corporate gift baskets available at The Nut House.

There is no minimum order, but planning ahead is key, as the selection is best earlier in the season. “The sooner you know you’re going to do something, the better the selection you are going to have. We prefer to help companies put their gifts together with what they like rather than what’s left in stock. The more lead time you can give us, the more flexible we can be,” said Hazel. A company interested in working with The Nut House to develop their gifts simply needs to call with a price range, and any specific requests and the employees there can do the rest. If the gifts are to be shipped, providing The Nut House with a list of addresses will insure that your gifts are properly packaged and mailed in time to be received by the date of your choice. “If a client doesn’t have any specific requests, we can direct them to which items may best fit their needs,” said Hazel. “Not everything can survive a trip across the country and still look nice when the box is opened. We can offer suggestions to our

clients on which items are going to send well.” Cracked pecans are still one of The Nut House’s more popular gift items. And they always have them available this time of year. After the pecans are cracked, they can be packaged in burlap bags and dressed up with holiday ribbons to be given on their own, or placed in a gift basket with other items. Fudge is always a best seller at The Nut House during the holiday season. It is great for a dessert tray at a company holiday party, but also makes an excellent gift option. Because the temperatures are low enough this time of year, fudge also ships nicely.

Military Appreciation Monday www.goldencorral.com/military, Golden Corrals nationwide served over 375,000 veterans and active duty military with a free dinner buffet and beverage. This year, Veterans Day falls on Monday, November 12. From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., a complimentary buffet and beverage will be available to any person who has served in the United States military, including retirees, veterans, active duty servicemen, National Guard and Reserves. Even though dinner is not free for friends and family of the veterans, Golden Corral still hopes that those who are close to veterans will join them in this honorary celebration. The free buffet will be available on site at

Golden Corral only (no take-outs), as this event is designed to allow veterans to renew old friendships, make new ones, and enjoy an atmosphere of comradeship amongst those of like experience. “Over the years, we’ve noticed many previous faces,” says Ron. “And there are always some new ones.” Military Appreciation Monday is just one way Golden Corral exhibits its gratitude to American veterans and members of the armed forces. Over the years, the restaurant chain has raised over $6.1 million for Disabled Veterans (DAV), a grassroots, non-profit organization that has dedicated itself to assisting America’s

disabled veterans and their families since it was founded in 1920 following World War I. The DAV assists in a variety of ways, from simple things like transportation to VA medical centers to educating lawmakers about legislation designed to help veterans. Last year, Golden Corral restaurants and guests broke previous records, contributing over $1,035,000 for the DAV, making 2011 the second consecutive year that totals passed the one million dollar mark. Ron and Jennifer have no doubt the Claremore Military Appreciation Monday at Golden Corral will meet or exceed what it has accomplished in years past. “We

Karly Elnes and twin sisters Chrissy Troyer and Courtney Harrison handle personal, individual and family coverage. Commercial customers can count on agents Jill Nanney and Dana Ingersoll. All of the agents at Neely Insurance guarantee that customers will be treated with hospitality and consideration. “Our agents are very knowledgeable and friendly, and always work hard to provide the very best advice and service for every customer,” said Office Manager Terrie Neely. “But most importantly, we value our customers’ time. We always answer the phone, never leave people waiting and guarantee you can always talk to a human rather than a machine.” Neely Insurance writes all lines of coverage including home, life, health, auto

and recreational vehicles, commercial property and liability, workers compensation and bonds. One line that they want to make sure property owners don’t overlook is flood insurance. Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States, yet so many people are not protected. Many customers are not aware that simply having homeowner’s insurance will not cover them against flooding. For that, they are required to purchase a separate flood insurance policy. FEMA has recently updated the floodplain map for Rogers County. This has required many people to add flood insurance to their existing homeowner’s policy. Neely Insurance and Financial Services believes it is something all property owners should consider. “Some people think they are ineligible for flood insurance because of where they live or their mortgage status, but that’s a

misconception,” said Terrie. “The truth is, most property owners can get flood insurance for their home or business, even if their property has flooded in the past.” Neely Insurance offers an easy enrollment process and free certified zone determinations on both residential and commercial properties. Agents provide their customers with the proper information about their flood risk and protection options and help them make informed decisions that will protect their financial investments. Neely Insurance is an independent agency, which means they don’t work for a company, they work for their customers. When a customer applies for any line of insurance, they start by meeting with an agent to fill out a quote sheet. Then their assigned agent shops all markets from several different companies, checks all the companies’ ratings online, looks for any available discounts and accesses the best

policy at the best price to meet that customer’s needs. After a policy is purchased, the same dependable agent will provide any future services needed. One size does not fit all where insurance and financial planning needs are concerned, however options are not a problem for a one-stop shop like Neely Insurance. The agency is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

County judges,” she says. “My staff, as well as myself, work hard each day to sustain a well-run office, without compromising the integrity of the court records, or the rights of the public which is dictated by the state statutes and Oklahoma Supreme Court.” Among Czapansky’s accomplishments is the savings to Rogers County residents of over 17 million dollars since March 1996, when she took office. “We have used Court Fund monies instead of utilizing county funds to operate the Court Clerk’s office,” she says. Dedication to improving the Court Clerk’s office operations earned Czapansky an “Excellence in Management” award from the Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court. A member of the Oklahoma Court Clerk’s Association as well as the County Officers and Deputies Association, Czapansky says she has enjoyed her 29 years as a public servant, working in the Court Clerk’s office. “I wish to continue serving the residents of Rogers County,” she adds. “We are here to serve the residents.”

During her tenure as Court Clerk, Czapansky implemented a full-time cost collection administrator as well as adding a bookkeeper position to help streamline the office’s workload. Under Czapansky’s leadership, the office also began accepting credit card payment for fees. “I have also made it possible for all public docket sheets to be available by Internet access,” Czapansky says. “These updates are designed to aid the public in accessing Rogers County court records.” Currently the office is in the process of converting microfilmed records into digital images for archive purposes, and Czapansky says it will help maintain “the integrity of our records.” Budget reductions over the last few years have forced Czapansky to make tough decisions concerning office operations. “While striving to maintain our high standard of service to Rogers County residents and the State of Oklahoma, I have taken on additional court duties as requested by Rogers

Don’t Let an Injury Keep You Down With locations in Claremore, Catoosa and Pryor, Summit Physical Therapy is an excellent choice for those seeking care in Rogers County.

By Cassie Woods Summit Physical Therapy has been serving patients in Rogers County for more than 13 years. After originally opening their doors in 1999, owners Bret McGuire and Sean Cox, both doctors of physical therapy, quickly realized their goal of providing quality services to the people of Claremore. They have since expanded several times, opened additional facilities in Catoosa and Pryor, added pediatrics services, and built a beautiful new, state-of-the-art facility in Claremore. The business is still owner-operated and both doctors continue to see patients to this day. Sports injury, post-surgical rehabilitation and work injury are just a few of the services provided to those with a doctor’s prescription at all three adult Summit locations. With the fall sports seasons upon us, athletic injuries are becoming more common. Summit doctors aid with sports injuries as they volunteer their time on the sidelines at Claremore and Pryor athletic events. Essentially, athletic injuries are orthopedic injuries

that are more obvious due to their occurrence during an individual’s sports involvement. “Our goal for the athlete is to return them to the sport quickly through appropriate rehabilitation programs, and

prevent re-injuries through proper warm-up and training techniques,” said co-owner Sean Cox. “We teach them these techniques so they can enjoy their time on the field without worry or pain.”

Doctors of Physical Therapy Sean Cox and Bret McGuire own and operate Summit Physical Therapy. They are highly trained to serve the needs of sports injury, post-surgical and work injury patients.

ROGERS COUNTY

In addition to care for sports injuries, Summit specializes in post-surgical care. As December approaches, many people find themselves scheduling surgeries to meet year-end deductibles. Summit can help with rehabilitation from surgeries to the neck, back, knees, shoulders and hips. “Orthopedic rehabilitation encompasses a wide range of injuries and problems involving the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and peripheral nerves,” said Delayna Trease, Summit marketing director. Summit also offers therapy for work injury, including workers compensation and industrial rehabilitation. Occupational Therapist Colleen Caton is trained in doing job-site analysis and functional capacity evaluations that apply to the industrial work setting. She can also help employers decrease their risk for problems by performing ergonomic assessments and assisting with planning for fitness and wellness programs and injury prevention education programs. The doctors at Summit want patients to be aware that the most beneficial thing they can do for their recovery is to start the physical therapy as soon as their doctor will allow. “Regardless of the type of injury, the most important component of the rehabilitation process is starting as soon as your doctor prescribes you to enhance your best overall recovery,” said Bret McGuire, co-owner. “If you wait too long, some damage may not be

Page 29

reversible.” In addition to these great services they have long provided their patients, Summit continues to expand to offer new services. One of those is Women’s Health Physical Therapy. Ashleigh Day, MPT and women’s health therapist, is trained to help adult women and children with bowel and bladder issues including incontinence, pelvic pain, prolapse, chronic constipation and bedwetting. She also treats women for pregnancy-related problems and postpartum. Another great service that is open to the public and does not require a doctor’s prescription is Summit’s aquatic arthritis classes. This class is perfect for someone suffering from arthritis, stiff and sore joints, or who just needs help with muscle relaxation. Classes are held in Summit’s 92-degree warm water pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $5 per class. Visit Summit on Facebook or on its website for more information on the numerous services and treatments available. Ask your doctor for a referral to Summit Physical Therapy.

Go Treasure Hunting in the Heart of Tulsa Don’t miss the Holiday Open House at Mustard Seed Door Consignment on November 17 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

By Diana Clark & Derek Taylor

Welcome to a great adventure! Mustard Seed Door Consignment, the premier consignment shop in Oklahoma for furniture and home décor, offers you an opportunity to have fun and treasure hunt for bargains on unique furniture and home accessories where the merchandise changes every day. Mustard Seed Door consigns and sells furniture and accessories in just about every style – traditional, contemporary, French, antique, modern and transitional. Six years ago, Mustard Seed Door Consignment owners Diana Clark and her son John Clark were approached by a group of interior designers and decorators with the idea of opening a quality furniture consignment shop in Tulsa that offered impeccable integrity and service. Diana and John discovered there are many people who, for a variety of reasons, need a way to sell and buy gently-used, quality home furnishings. This need can be triggered by a move of some type, a desire to change your home décor, a marriage or divorce, or the purchase of a second home. Many people today

are downsizing, moving to assisted living, or setting up their first household and are looking for good quality furniture. Those who have been through the death of a loved one often need a dignified and respectful way to place furniture and décor into the hands of a new owner without having to deal with the time and hassle of selling it themselves. These are the type of people that welcome the tasteful surroundings and warm assistance that Mustard Seed Door is known for. Mustard Seed Door experiences a quick merchandise turnaround, which allows for the steady stream of new items arriving daily. Things sell so quickly that many customers regularly visit the store two or more times a week just to keep up with all of the new and exciting items the store receives. Many customers come in every Saturday from areas outside of Tulsa because they know there will be new things to see and experience. There are also a number of customers that come from as far away as Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Much of

the Mustard Seed Door’s business is referral or repeat customers who have learned that, if you see something you love, you better buy it the minute you see it because it will likely be sold by the time you return! At Mustard Seed Door, you can furnish and decorate a house or enhance any room – dining room, living room, bedroom, office, bath, kitchen, or sunroom. You can find a single accent furniture piece or make your house sparkle for the holidays with an original oil, a tribal rug, a designer floral, new lamps or a set of antique books. Perhaps custom drapes from a show home would look fabulous on your windows. You may also find a unique chandelier for a fraction of its original price. The Mustard Seed Door offers an amazing variety to choose from including home décor accessories like prints, clocks and mirrors. Mustard Seed Door is also involved in the local community and supports local causes with a special fondness for the Salvation Army and organizations that serve children and families. They are proud

members of the Better Business Bureau and employ a total of six wonderful Tulsans ranging in age from 35 to 84. Mustard Seed Door has two priorities: serving the customer and offering a unique, relaxed shopping experience. At Mustard Seed Door, the customer always comes first. By serving the Tulsa community with honesty and integrity, Diana and John have built their consignment business into one of Tulsa’s best family-owned businesses. Please join Mustard Seed Door for a Holiday Open House event on Saturday, November 17 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. They will

have store-wide discounts, exciting prizes and refreshments. Mustard Seed Door is located at 5800 S. Lewis in London Square. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Call (918) 7429600 or visit the store online at www.mustardseedconsignment.com.

Are You Tired of the Weight? Dr. Luis Gorospe, a highly experienced bariatric surgeon who provides personalized, friendly care to each of his patients, offers free weekly seminars on weight loss surgery.

By Sheryl Sowell If you are morbidly obese and suffering from medical complications stemming from being overweight, surgery may be the right answer for you. With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who to see, and what surgery is right for you. To help answer these questions and determine if you are a proper candidate for weight loss surgery, Dr. Luis Gorospe, based out of Wagoner Community Hospital, offers free weekly seminars designed to address all of your questions and concerns. During the seminars, Dr. Gorospe explains the entire process from beginning to end and assists the small group of attendees in determining if they are qualified for surgery. To some people, for example, he may suggest lifestyle changes prior to, or even in place of, opting for surgery. For those who are qualified to undergo the operation, Dr. Gorospe offers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding, and gastric sleeve surgeries. He also performs conversion and

revision surgeries in cases that the initial operation does not result in the desired weight loss. According to Johnna Sue Blair, business development director for Wagoner Community Hospital, it is a combination of Dr. Gorospe’s experience, skill, personality, and individual attention to each patient that makes him a superior choice when selecting a bariatric surgeon. “Not only is Dr. Gorospe a board certified bariatric surgeon who has performed many successful weight loss surgeries, he also has an extraordinary bedside manner, which you don’t always see with surgeons. His patients absolutely love him, he is very friendly, and the first thing people notice about him is that he’s always smiling. You can tell he truly cares about his patients.” Dr. Gorospe has been performing weight loss surgeries for many years at hospitals throughout the Tulsa metro area. He began offering bariatric operations at Wagoner Community Hospital in August of this year. “Dr. Gorospe

prefers working in smaller community hospitals such as Wagoner because he is able to give patients more personal, one-on-one care,” said Johnna. “At larger hospitals, patients are in and out and can get lost in the crowd, but here Dr. Gorospe is able to give each of his patients the individual attention they want and need.” Since 2003, morbid obesity has been officially determined a disease in and of itself; therefore surgical treatment would be considered for patients who meet the definition for morbid obesity. Generally, the criteria for surgery is considered a patient who is between 80 and 100 pounds overweight (BMI of 40 or higher) who have associated medical conditions that are related to their obesity. “Your genetics, internal hormonal imbalance, learned eating behavior and subliminal stimulation, especially through the media, are just some of the factors that must take the blame for morbid obesity,” said Dr. Gorospe. Among his many

Luis V. Gorospe, MD, FACS. accomplishments, Dr. Gorospe was the first to perform laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass in Oklahoma and was the first doctor from Oklahoma to be a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. If you’re ready to change your life, call Dr. Gorospe’s office at (918) 252-2800 to learn

about his free weekly seminars on weight loss surgery.

Tom Phillips is able to ride his Harley and enjoy life again after a knee replacement from Dr. LaButti.

By Joshua Danker-Dake Tom Phillips, 55, of Hominy worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections for over 22 years. “I weigh over 300 pounds, and when I retired, I had over 22 years on my feet. My knee was worn out because I was heavy and because I was standing and walking on concrete for so long,” he says. “I had very little cartilage left in my right knee, and I was in pain every time I tried to walk.” Tom paid several visits to an orthopedist. His visits there included X-rays and an MRI, and he had two injections in his right knee, he says. “The first injection reduced the pain for about two months, but the second shot did not help at all.” Tom then visited Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I told him I was ready for surgery,” Mike said. “I had the surgery on August 11, 2011, and after two days in the hospital, I was sent home. Dr. LaButti’s office arranged for home health to visit and determine my needs. A nurse visited and helped me set up my physical therapy, and the physical therapist visited my home three days a week for about five weeks.”

The surgery and the rehabilitation program were successful, Tom says. “My wound healed very quickly, and within a couple of weeks, the strength in my right leg began to return. I’ve had no problems since the surgery; I recently had my one-year check-up with Dr. LaButti, and everything is looking good.” Now rid of debilitating knee pain, Tom is free to pursue his interests in his retirement. “I recently purchased a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and I plan on seeing some new places in the next few years,” he says. “And I would highly recommend Dr. LaButti to anyone with a knee problem.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. iBlock®

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.
