By Lorrie Ward For over a decade, Golden Corral restaurants across the nation have honored American veterans with a free “thank you” dinner on Veterans Day. This hand of gratitude and friendship has been extended to over 3.2 million veterans, and as the event marks its 12th year, the restaurant hopes to yet again increase those numbers. Ron and Jennifer Barnett have owned the Golden Corral in Claremore since 2001, and both worked for several years at the Golden Corral in Lawton, which is where they met. Even though Claremore’s Golden Corral is one of the smallest in the nation, Ron reports that it consistently raises six to seven thousand dollars a year during this event. “For a small Golden Corral, that is a lot,” says Ron.

For almost three decades, Candi Czapansky has been one of the smiling faces at the Rogers County Court Clerk’s office. Since Czapansky first walked through the courthouse doors in 1980, she has become familiar with all aspects of the office through her work in the various departments. In 1996, Rogers County voters revealed their confidence in Czapansky to run this important county government office by electing her Court Clerk. Since then, their trust in Czapansky’s integrity and ability to run the office efficiently led to her re-election in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

During her tenure as Court Clerk, Czapansky has earned Oklahoma Court Clerk Certification from The Center for Local Government Technology through Oklahoma State University. She has also implemented numerous improvements, leading to a more efficient office. According to Czapansky, Rogers County was one of the first District Courts in the state to use computers. In 1996, Rogers County Courts joined the Supreme Court of Oklahoma computer system, now known as Oklahoma Court Information System. “This is the present system

in which the courts as well as the public can view court dockets, calendars, and more via the Internet at Oklahoma State Courts Network,” says Czapansky. In 2009, the Supreme Court adopted a plan to meet future technology needs of the courts throughout the State of Oklahoma. “As a result of my vast knowledge of the Court Clerk’s office, I was appointed by the Supreme Court in March 2009 to the Civil Subcommittee,” she says. In January 2011, Czapansky’s experience led to her appointment to the (continued on page 28)

With both Thanksgiving and the presidential election this month, I was challenged with whether to write about gratefulness or the election. Then it occurred to me maybe I should write about being grateful that this election cycle is almost over. It doesn’t require scrambling around trying to get gifts or messing with lots of decorations. Its sole focus is gathering with friends and family just to eat and be together. It really creates a space that allows us to truly be grateful. We have a tradition in our family where every family member tells specifically all the things they have been grateful for over the last year as we go around the table. Since we don’t live close, it allows me to hear and understand what has been going on in their lives over the past year.

It occurs to me that with most everyone I deal with, we get caught up in the struggles and challenges of everyday life. And while we give thanks in our prayers each day, we should really spend more time focusing and concentrating on all of our blessings. The small, daily blessings that make our lives so much easier, the daily free and priceless gifts that our relationships bring are really what makes life worth living. After all, the more you focus your attention on the good, the more positive you attract. The tendency to focus on negativity in the markets,

disappointment with how you have managed your money, the lack of disciplined savings, what you wish your investments had done, and many other “if onlys”…abound. If you haven’t been satisfied with your current situation with your investments or your money, then stop focusing on what could have been and start doing something about it. If not, next year you will be sitting here thinking and feeling the same way. My dad used to tell me….If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you always got. It’s true. holidays according to the personalities of each individual family and are sure to inspire the Christmas spirit in tour attendees. “We had the home at 910 W. 6th St. on the tour last year while it was still under construction as a Habitat for Humanity home,” says Savannah Haddock, club president. “When Ashley volunteered to let us showcase it again, we thought it would be great to bring it back for our attendees to see the completed project. The home will be decorated with inexpensive design ideas that anyone can do, which we think our guests will also appreciate.” The Junior Ocieleta Club was started by philanthropist Ocie Mayberry on September 27, 1956, to give young women an opportunity to work together to support local charity needs. Ocie passed away in 1987, just four years after the first Home Tour. But her legacy lives on as 100 percent of the proceeds from the tour still go to help fund community projects and organizations in Claremore, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA, Claremore Public Schools Foundation, Safenet Services, Bit by Bit, the Manger and Friends of the Library. As an added treat on this 29th tour, Janelle Dover Hankinson, the granddaughter of Ocie Mayberry, will be visiting from Seattle to attend. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to attend this year’s tour,” said Janelle. “It’s a privilege to see the ladies and projects that are inspired by the hard work and

You’ll Have a “Dickens of a Time”

Claremore Main Street hosts the annual Victorian-style celebration in downtown Claremore November 16-17, 2012. By Carol Beck-Round Can you do the Vienna Waltz, the Virginia reel or the Shoddish? Maybe the Grand March or the Polka is more your style. However, it really doesn’t matter if you can dance because Claremore Main Street is kicking off the Christmas season with their annual Dickens on the Boulevard celebration with plenty of family-friendly fun for

Scheduled for November 16-17 in historic downtown Claremore, the event is a Victorian-themed holiday festival featuring stage entertainment, street dancing, a costume contest, food and more. The vintage festival will begin at 6 on both nights, when the downtown area is blocked off to traffic to allow all participants

to stroll, dance or ride by wagon down the historic streets. Businesses, decorated for the holiday season, will host an open house during the free event. Shoppers can sign up for drawings to receive Dickens Dollars to spend at the participating merchants. “Last year, we gave away between $200 and $300 per night in drawings for Dickens Dollars, which are good at participating merchants,” says Cindy Bissett, Claremore Main Street’s executive director. “It’s a good time to get started on your Christmas shopping.” Visitors will be transported back to the Victorian era with live storefront window displays. Individuals, donned in their extravagantly designed gowns and frock coats, will pose in the windows like mannequins to engage people strolling down the historic sidewalks. For those who want to participate in the fun by wearing a Victorian costume, a contest will be held both nights to determine the Best Dressed. Winners will receive prizes in the following categories: man,

woman, couple, young man, young woman, boy and girl. Onstage entertainment, beginning at 6 each night, will draw the crowd to the middle of the block, while children will enjoy having their photos snapped with Santa Claus for $3. The upper floors of five of Claremore’s historic buildings will come alive on both nights as “Tales from the Top” returns with a guided tour of the upper floors and a “slightly embellished story from Claremore’s past,” says Event Chair Nancy Fitts. “Participants will get to hear a story from a character that is closely associated with the building’s past as they portray their life in early-day Claremore.” This year a new Mystery Twist is being added to the tours. Participants will find a clue at each of the five buildings and can guess the answer to win a prize. A winner will be drawn if more than one entry is correct. Tour participants not only hear the actor’s story but are also allowed to explore on their own. “We don’t clean the upper floor,” says Bissett, “so if you have a dust problem or trouble climbing stairs, this might not be for you.” Due to time constraints, approximately 60 people per night can participate in the Tales from the Top, according to Bissett. At approximately 8:30 on both nights, those who want to cut loose to the sounds of the Victorian-era music can literally dance in the streets as Dr. Phil Sample, RSU professor, calls the dances, like the Virginia reel. “It’s neat to see the youth participate in such old-fashioned fun,” says Fitts. “It’s a fun, family event and people love it.” Dog Creek Outfitters will be on site with their historic chuck wagon serving up a meal of barbecue and beans, and Perry Dog Café will be on the street selling hot dogs with all the fixings. Kettle corn will also be available for purchase. Other planned activities include the Territorial Marshals Reenactment, a Living Nativity, and displays by period artisans like weavers, blacksmiths, carvers and silversmiths. Area authors will also be on hand signing copies of their books at Boardinghouse Books on the east end of Main Street. “We are also looking for volunteers to help with the event,” says Bissett, “including people to window sit or set up and clean up.” If you’re ready to boogie into the holiday season, put on your dancing shoes and head to Claremore Main Street for Dickens on the Boulevard.

RSU Honors Faculty Excellence In October, eight Rogers State University faculty members were awarded for their contributions in teaching, scholarship/research and service.

By David Hamby Eight Rogers State University faculty members were honored for excellence in teaching, scholarship/research and service during a campus ceremony on Tuesday, October 9. Dr. Mary Mackie, associate professor of English and humanities, was named the recipient of the Pixley Excellence in Education Award, which is the highest honor bestowed upon an RSU faculty member. The Pixley award is made possible by the Pixley Endowment for Excellence in Education at RSU. Mackie has taught more than a dozen courses in the decade she has been with RSU, where she has maintained an active research agenda with numerous publications including book chapters, articles and conference presentations/papers. She is the advisor for the campus newspaper, serves as poetry editor for “Cooweescoowee” and has chaired the Humanities Forum for seven years. In addition to the Pixley Award, Mackie also received the Gladys L. and Carl G. Herrington Excellence in Service Award for the School of Liberal Arts during Tuesday’s ceremony.

Dr. Sally Emmons, professor of English and humanities, received the Herrington Excellence in Teaching Award for the School of Liberal Arts. In addition to her teaching in the School of Liberal Arts, she teaches service classes for other RSU departments and schools, and also serves as managing editor of “Cooweescoowee.” In the School of Business and Technology, Dr. Dana Gray received the Pfizer Excellence in Teaching Award, Dr. Peter Macpherson received the Pfizer Excellence in Scholarship/Research Award and Dr. MaryRose Hart received the Pfizer Excellence in Service Award. Gray is an assistant professor of business, who brings extensive business experience to the classroom. The 2008 Pixley Award winner, she integrates real-world learning opportunities for students to bridge theory to practice, allowing students to build a portfolio documenting professional experiences before they graduate. Macpherson is professor and John W. Norman Chair in Business Information

Technology. He recently had three papers accepted for publication dealing with heart modeling and heart/brain interactions, one of which was accepted into the Eighth International Conference on Advances in Fluid Mechanics in Algarve, Portugal in September 2010 and published in the proceedings. In 2011, he had a paper presented at the Modeling in Medicine and Biology Conference in Riga, Latvia. Hart, who serves as associate professor of business, has served on the Faculty Senate and as a member of numerous university committees including curriculum, academic policies and procedures, strategic planning, and United Way. She was the founding faculty member and faculty advisor for the RSU Sigma Beta Delta International Business Honor Society. In the School of Mathematics, Science and Health Sciences, Dr. Jalalidin Jaenbai earned the Pfizer Excellence in Teaching Award, Dr. Jae-Ho Kim received the Pfizer Award in Scholarship/Research and Dr. Kasia Roberts was recog-

He continues to collaborate with the University

of Oklahoma, using their cell culture facilities to facilitate his research, as well as that of his students. Roberts, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, is active in the state and national professional organizations advancing chemistry instruction. Win Big for Shopping in Claremore A total of $14,000 will be awarded in the 10th annual Santa Cash promotion.

Then plan your shopping by patronizing Claremore businesses for the 10th annual Santa Cash promotion, which kicks off at noon on Friday, November 9. The annual Claremore Chamber of Commerce’s promotion

encourages people to “shop local” for the holiday season. As in past years, two cash prizes will be awarded to Santa Cash shoppers, on Saturday, December 22 at 11 a.m. at the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs Grandstands, east of Claremore on Highway 20. The grand prize winner will walk away

with a check for $10,000, while the second-place ticketholder will receive a $2,500 check. However, participants must be present to win. “A third drawing of $1,500 in cash does not require you to be present to win,” says Dell Davis, Claremore Chamber of Commerce executive director.

Members of the Claremore Chamber board presented a $10,000 check to last year’s grand prize winners, Kenneth and Sheryl Lewis, at Will Rogers Downs Grandstands. Their winning ticket was from Reasor’s.

If the Santa Cash ticket is not presented at the Chamber office for that particular week by Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at the noon deadline, a new number will be posted. The final weekly ticket posting, if no winning ticket has been presented, will be on January 23 with a noon deadline on January 30 to claim the prize. “So even if you are out of town or unable to attend the ‘live’ drawing, you still have the opportunity to win $1,500,” Davis adds. “The Santa Cash promotion is two-fold,” says Julie AdamsSimmons, committee chair. “It rewards shoppers and is a boost to local retail and service participants during the holiday season.” Davis adds, “This is a tremendous opportunity to keep holiday sales in our community. Benefit New Facility

Safenet Services decks the halls for its annual holiday fundraiser with hopes of filling the walls of its new shelter. By Cassie Woods This fall, the elves at Safenet Services are particularly busy. In addition to opening a new state-of-the-art facility at the end of October, they are preparing for their biggest fundraiser of the year. The 8th annual Festival of Trees Gala and Auction will be held on Friday, November 30, at Rogers State University’s Centennial Center Ballroom. The silent auction will start the event at 6 p.m., with the live auction to follow. Ticketholders will also enjoy live entertainment, wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres. This year’s Festival of Trees will feature beautifully decorated Christmas trees ranging from four to nine feet tall. Amongst them will be themed trees designed by Cindy of Florals by Teddie Rae in Pryor, Ann Harmon of Ann Harmon’s Designs, and Andy Willis. Local businesses such as RCI Insurance and civic groups such

as the Junior Ocieleta Club will also be providing decorated trees for auction. The committee is currently looking for more tree sponsors as well as table sponsors. “It’s a great way for businesses or groups to get their staff and members involved with a local charity. They can buy a pre-lit tree and have a party to decorate it before the event,” said Tammy Thomas, committee member. “They can even sponsor a corporate table to come see what their creation goes for at auction.” Jim Smith of Smith Family Auctions will once again be the evening’s auctioneer. By attending the Festival of Trees auction, not only will you be helping victims of domestic violence, but you will also be entertained by a superb auctioneer. Jim’s auctioning skills always make the evening fun and exciting. In addition to

the beautiful trees, wreaths, garland, other holiday items, and entertainment items will also be available for auction. A full “Crystal and Ice” tablescape including everything from the place setting for eight, tablecloth, chair décor and centerpiece; four Disney Park Hopper tickets; an Arkansas getaway package; and a limo wine tour for eight sponsored by Crossbow Construction are just some of the items up for grabs. Free next-day delivery to Claremore or Pryor will be available for larger Christmas trees. Due to the time devoted to opening the facility, the Safenet Board of Directors has decided to limit the Festival of Trees to the Friday night Gala and Auction. Corporate tables for eight people are offered at $500. Individual tickets are $35 each and may be purchased at Safenet Services, located at 1219 W.

Beginning November 6, the Belvidere Mansion will be transformed into a spectacular Christmas wonderland.

By Lorrie Ward Part of the magic of Christmas is the atmosphere. Some people would even say that joy comes more from seeing the festively wrapped packages beneath a glistening tree than from actually opening the gifts. If you are one of those people who love to experience the beauty and wonder of Christmas in a tangible way, you will want to attend “Christmas at

the Belvidere” and see a landmark already steeped in tradition transformed into a Christmas wonderland where Charles Dickens would feel right at home. Beginning on November 6 and extending through the holiday season, the Belvidere will throw open its doors to reveal Christmas in all its glory. With décor reminiscent of the

Victorian period in which the mansion was built, “it is like something out of a Currier and Ives print – really impressive,” says Morgan Anderssen Williams, buyer and manager of the Belvidere Gift Shop. Each room at the Belvidere will host several trees, with thousands of lights and various themes – everything from traditional Victorian to vintage (red, green and gold) to rustic country, and there will be a peacock themed tree this year also. Since there are four fireplaces in the Belvidere, these will be elaborately decorated in anticipation of Santa’s arrival as well. Rather than simply display beautiful décor, the Belvidere offers visitors the chance to create their own haven of beauty on, around and under the tree, offering ornaments, mantel décor, table toppers, kitchen and hostess gifts, cards, clothes, and jewelry in the downstairs Gift Shop. “We have customers who do ornament exchanges each year,” Morgan relates, “who love to come and choose theirs here.” Even though such items are only available during the holiday season, Morgan and other Rogers County Historical Society members begin shopping for the next holiday

right after the current one is over, so that next year’s selection will be even more varied than in past seasons. The Belvidere will be open late until 8 p.m. during Claremore’s Dickens on the Boulevard (Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17) and Morgan hopes people will stop into view the mansion’s beauty after dusk. “The mansion is so beautiful at night,” she says. “The trees are all lit up so it can be seen to its best effect.” Also on Friday night of Dickens on the Boulevard, Claremore Community Chorus will be performing at the Belvidere. Any Belvidere tour is free, but donations are always gratefully accepted, as they help keep this Claremore treasure open for future generations to enjoy. Morgan also encourages anyone who would like to volunteer hands-on help with decorating to contact RCHS, as it takes a lot of hands to create a holiday wonderland. “You gain a new appreciation for how much work it is do things like stringing lights and setting up trees and fluffing garlands,” she says. “There are volunteers who have been involved since the beginning –

Betty Reeves comes every year and will spend hours just fluffing garlands and trees. Peggy Feese and Sandy Coy are working on a unique mantel decoration this year that I can’t wait to see.” Most of all, Morgan hopes that Christmas shoppers will find a little piece of the Belvidere to take home with them to remind them each Christmas of this unique experience. “We hope the Belvidere is a destination for shoppers, as the entire experience can’t be equaled elsewhere,” says Morgan. “You can shop, eat, and enjoy an almost fantasy-like environment: it is just so pretty, and generations of families visit together each year to make a memorable experience.” Don’t miss your chance to see the Belvidere Mansion at night during Dickens on the Boulevard, both Friday and Saturday night, November 16 and 17, when they will be open until 8 p.m. The Belvidere (like many other downtown merchants) is also open in the evening from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month as part of the Downtown First Night promotion. Renowned artist Maggie Bonanomi will have wool art available for sale, and local herb vendor Jalene Riley of Utopia Gardens will also be on site selling herbs. “Some of our patrons have been coming since Carols and Crumpets was founded 22 years ago,” mentions Patsy Wynn, Tulsa Herb Society’s president. “There is just such a warm, family-friendly atmosphere; it is really a great way to kick off the holiday season.” Other vendors will be selling homemade chocolates, cement leaves, wooden trellises, soaps, pottery, potpourri, dolls and marionettes.

Crafts are not the only treat available. The Tulsa Herb Society also has a cooking crew. These chefs create delectable chutneys, vinegars and jellies; they will also have their third edition cookbook available for sale. Headed by Lois Galpin and Janice Partridge, the cooking committee is renowned for their use of savory herbs in their coveted delicacies. In case shoppers work up an appetite, the Snow Flake Café will be serving lunch, complete with a soup, sandwich, dessert and drink, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the only fundraiser that the Tulsa Herb Society sponsors, and its proceeds are used for a variety of things. Part of the proceeds goes back to the Tulsa Garden Center to be used for maintenance of the historical building and grounds. The Tulsa Herb Society uses the rest of the proceeds to sponsor trips for its members and host educational speakers for Tulsans. His visits there included X-rays and an MRI, and he had two injections in his right knee, he says. “The first injection reduced the pain for about two months, but the second shot did not help at all.” Tom then visited Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I told him I was ready for surgery,” Mike said. “I had the surgery on August 11, 2011, and after two days in the hospital, I was sent home. Dr. LaButti’s office arranged for home health to visit and determine my needs. A nurse visited and helped me set up my physical therapy, and the physical therapist visited my home three days a week for about five weeks.”

The surgery and the rehabilitation program were successful, Tom says. “My wound healed very quickly, and within a couple of weeks, the strength in my right leg began to return.
