WINTERIZE AND PERMANENTLY PRESERVE YOUR DECKS AND PATIOS BY TERESA BOND-MASON

he extremes of harsher weather conditions in winter and summer are the greatest enemies of wood and concrete. In the winter, wet and cloudy days exponentially increase deterioration of wood causing fungus and rot; as does the annual freeze-thaw cycle that breaks down concrete. Using PermaSeal USA offers you a defense system to prevent wood deterioration and absorbs into concrete to penetrate microscopic cracks, crevasses and pores to prevent checking and pitting. Q&A with Financial Advisor Linda Rainwater Q: What is a Mutual Fund? I have these at work in my 401k retirement plan. A: A mutual fund is a group of investments that can be purchased to provide diversification to a portfolio. Mutual funds can be composed of stocks and/or bonds. Some mutual funds have both stocks and bonds; these are usually called “balanced funds.” Some mutual funds perform better than others. This is due to fund expenses and market allocation. There are many categories of mutual funds to provide numerous choices for investors. Some popular categories include:

• • • •

Large US Companies (Large Cap) Medium US Companies (Mid Cap) Small US Companies (Small Cap) International

• Developing Economies (Emerging Markets) • Health Care • Technology

The categories are many and some funds combine multiple categories (one example is a mutual fund made up of Linda Rainwater, AAMS ®, 14 years, Financial Advisor small health care companies). At the end of September, the S&P 500 will be changing the companies that make up some of the current sectors. A sector is a grouping of companies that are similar (such as technology companies). This change is causing some mutual fund providers to make changes to align with the new sector definitions. Because there are so many diversifications and fund groups, it is important to know and understand what you own in your 401K. Our office would be happy to make an appointment with you to answer any questions that you might have. Investors should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of mutual funds before investing. The prospectus and summary prospectus contains this and other information about mutual funds. The prospectus and summary prospectus is available from your financial advisor and should be read carefully before investing. Any information is not a complete summary or statement of all available data necessary for making an investment decision and does not constitute a recommendation. Investing involves risk, investors may incur a profit or loss regardless of the strategy or strategies employed. There is no assurance any of the trends mentioned will continue or forecasts will occur. Any opinions are those of the author and not necessarily those of RJFS or Raymond James. Changing market conditions can create fluctuations in the value of a mutual fund investment. In addition, there are fees and expenses associated with investing in mutual funds that do not usually occur when purchasing individual securities directly. International investing involves special risks, including currency fluctuations, differing financial accounting standards, and possible political and economic volatility. The prices of small company stocks may be subject to more volatility than those of large company stocks. Investing in emerging markets can be riskier than investing in well-established foreign markets. The companies engaged in the communications and technology industries are subject to fierce competition and their products and services may be subject to rapid obsolescence. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the U.S. stock market. Indices are not available for direct investment. Any investor who attempts to mimic the performance of an index would incur fees and expenses which would reduce returns. 401(k) plans are long-term retirement savings vehicles. Withdrawal of pre-tax contributions and/or earnings will be subject to ordinary income tax and, if taken prior to age 59 1/2, may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty.

Get$Fit Tip: Sweat the Small Stuff. There is a saying that wisdom comes from listening to advice, so I asked bankers to share the best money advice they have received and the impact it has made in their lives.

No. 1: Pay attention to your small expenses. “Spend more time thinking about $20 decisions rather than $20,000 decisions,” shares Gregg Conklin, RCB Bank lender. “You’ll make $5, $10, $20 decisions daily. These add up. Learn to be wise in how you spend and save $20, so as you build wealth, you’ll be wise in how you spend and save $20,000.” “I received this advice from a man who immigrated to the U.S. from Holland in the 1950s,” Conklin says. “He left Holland with $20 in his pocket and taught himself English by watching Saturday matinees. He eventually owned thousands of acres of ranch land, raising cattle in Kansas.”

No. 2: Invest in your future. “Pay your obligations first, invest in your future second, indulge in non-essentials last,” shares Emily 12 |

VALUES

Dake, RCB Bank loan document specialist. “My grandparents taught me to see money as a tool that could guarantee future comfort. If I buy something, I want to walk away having gained something permanent such as knowledge, an experience or an asset.”

No. 3: Build an emergency fund. “Build up a savings to cover at least three months worth of bills,” says Jessica Hamman, RCB Bank eServices. “After having ER surgery, I was without a paycheck. No savings and no paycheck can quickly put you behind on bills. It took three times as long to get caught up as it did to get behind.”

No. 4: Learn Rule 72. “Rule 72 will help you better understand the power of compounding interest over time,” shares Brad Ward, RCB Bank lender. “Take the number 72 and divide it by the annual rate of interest that your money is earning to determine the number of years it will take for your money to roughly double.”

OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE SEPTEMBER 2018

No. 5: Pay yourself like a bill. “Put money into a savings account directly from your paycheck so you don’t have time to spend it,” says Kim Harrison, RCB Bank loan assistant. “Since I started doing this I have been able to steadily save, and I was able to use part of it to buy my first house this year.”

No: 6: Start young. “Early in my career, I was told about the value of saving now for retirement later,” says Jenna Louderback, vice president, eServices. “Putting that advice to work at a young age has paid off as I have watched my investments grow immensely over the years. Starting as early as possible has put me ahead of the game for my retirement plans.”

Invest in yourself.

Your future self will thank you.

As owners of Tulsa Aviation Group, aka TAG, the Trammells help provide training for aspiring pilots of all ages, lease aircraft to licensed pilots, and help those with an interest in learning how to fly to achieve their dreams of the sky -- not unlike the Trammells themselves. “Back in 2013, I bought Casey an introductory flight for his birthday,” recalled Cristi. “He used to fly remote control airplanes -- we have a lot in our garage, and I thought ‘You know, if he loves his RC planes, he’ll love the real thing’, so I blindfolded him, took him to the airport and he had his first real flight.” “Believe it or not, I have a fear of heights,” laughed Casey, “but I had such a good time on my introductory flight, I knew I wanted to get back up in the air -- to learn how to fly a plane myself. I thought ‘I can do this,’ so I trained to get my own pilot’s license -- that was from September through December, and not long

after I finished training, we bought our first plane, and we went into business for ourselves.” Although neither of the Trammells had a background in aviation -Crisit’s background was in the dental industry and Casey’s was involved in his family digital protractor business -- both felt they could share their passion with others, offering students the opportunity to experience the thrill of flying for themselves. “Casey has his private pilot’s license, but as far as the training goes, we hire instructors -- most often from the Tulsa or Tulsa metro area -- who do the training,” Cristi said. “What we basically do is own the business, own the planes, and contract out the instructors who work one-on-one with the students.” Based out of Claremore Regional Airport, Tulsa Aviation Group differs from other pilot training schools in that the Trammell have written their own course syllabus which allows students to “go at their own pace.” “As far as getting your license goes, if you fly three to four times a week, you can finish the course

in about three or four months,” Cristi said. “There’s a minimum requirement of 40 flight hours to get your pilot’s license, but really, the time commitment is an ‘as you go’ thing. We try to taylor the time requirements to the individual students so that it’s easier for them to work around. Students can start at any time, at any age, and any hours they spend in the air goes towards their 40 hours.” “We get a lot of young people who have a passion for flying, even at a young age, but by the same token, we get several people in who may be somewhere in middle age, who are looking for something different to do for themselves, or have always wanted to fly a plane on their own but never thought they could get the necessary training until they heard about us,” she said. “Sometimes, they’ll enjoy it so much that they’ll go on to get their airline transport pilot’s license and move on to fly the big planes -- 747s, Boeings, and planes like those. Recently, the Trammells took several students to what they hope

Pilots Today to be an annual TAG trip to the Bahamas -- something which, without the students getting their pilot’s training from the school, would not have been possible for many. “The Bahamas trip was amazing -- we were so proud of the students, and it was something we’d like to do regularly,” Cristi said. As a family-owned business, Cristi said Tulsa Aviation Group differs from other pilot training schools with the individualized attention afforded its students. “Something I hear a lot from our Th pho This hoto to was taken from the cockpit i whi hile le flyi ying ing ove ver er th the e Ba Baha hama mas. s.

students is that they appreciate not only the training they get from TAG, but the attention we give them,” she said. “If they call us, they know I’ll answer the phone, if they have a question, they know that they can come to us for an answer. When a potential student comes to us, one thing we do is sit down with them and talk to them about what they’re wanting from the class, what their goals are, what they’re hoping to achieve by taking the class. We want to help them find the path that’s right for them. Both Casey and I care about

all of our students -- we want to help them follow their passion, the way that we did when we opened TAG. Even if they don’t come to our school, we want to help them find the path that’s best for them. They know that if they come to us, they’ll not only get exceptional training, but exceptionally individualized attention.” Casey echoed his wife’s sentiments. “We’re definitely here to help train pilots but we also take a personal interest in them, in their lives. “If anyone’s ever thought about flying a plane or would even want to know what it’s like to go up in one, we’d be happy to have them come talk to us about an introductory flight,” Cristi said. “A person may not know how much they love flying until they’re actually up in the air -- that’s what we’re here for: to help them realize their dreams or passion when it comes to flying and to give them the training needed to be a pilot.”

THE OLD TIME THRESHING BEE BY LORRIE WARD

H

istory will come alive in Fairview, Oklahoma on September 28-29. That’s when the Major County Historical Society will host its annual Old Time Threshing Bee, where attendees will get to experience a part of Oklahoma’s farming past that might otherwise have been long forgotten. “We’ve held this event for 33 years,” says Don Vogh, one of the main organizers of the Threshing Bee. “We want people to know our history and where we came from.” The event features living history from several periods in Oklahoma history, but concentrates mainly on farming techniques and machinery from the 1900s to 1930s. One important piece of machinery during

these decades was the threshing machine, which was revolutionary in its time because it mechanically replaced the centuries-old method of manual threshing (or separating grain from the plant by hand). To show the public how these machines work, the Major County Historical Society begins preparing in spring when they plant ten acres of wheat on their 160 acre farm, which they harvest in June, using their vintage International Harvester or John Deere binders. When the wheat is properly bound, they store it in pavilions in anticipation of their annual September Old Time Threshing Bee, where they will show how these amazing threshing machines worked until they were

OWASSO & COLLINSVILLE SEPTEMBER 2018

gradually replaced by the modern day combine after the 1930s. During the Threshing Bee, vintage Red River Threshing Machines will run several times during the day to thresh the stored wheat. After the wheat has been run through these machines, it will be run through a cleaner and bagged for sale. Some of these bags will go to the old flour mill to be ground into flour, while other bags will be offered for sale. Old time threshing machines may be the main attraction at the Threshing Bee, but these machines will be in good company with other vintage pieces from the era— stationary Bessemer engines, old time bailers, belt driven corn shellers, and John Deere and Allis tractors.

There will be demonstrations by blacksmiths, house movers, and anvil shooters, as well as demonstrations of the Oklahoma Land Run and one room schoolhouses. The saw mill on site will run all day both days during the Threshing Bee. On Saturday around noon, “gunfighters” will kick off a parade of vintage tractors and machinery, some of which will be for sale at the event. Organizers of the Old Time Threshing Bee strive to keep everything on display as authentic as possible. They even grow Turkey Red wheat, which is the type of wheat originally brought in by American settlers. Major County Historical Society’s Old Time Threshing Bee is held on their acreage, located a mile east of Fairview on Highway 58A. The Major County Museum , which is dedicated to Major County’s farm community history and highlights the county’s inventors and inventions, is also located on this acreage, is open year round and will welcome visitors of the Old Time

Threshing Bee during the event. “The event is scheduled so that visitors can get a true feel for how farming and farming communities operated in the early 1900s, before the present day type combines took the stage,” says Vogh. “We want to educate everyone about the ways of our past.”
