Financial New Year’s Resolutions: A Down To Earth Practical Approach BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

New Year’s Resolutions…sigh… Lots of folks make New Year’s Resolutions and then wonder why they didn’t work. Newsflash…They don’t work because you don’t follow through. Most of the time folks don’t follow through because they really didn’t have a true desire to do them in the first place, or maybe they want the outcomes but are not really committed to the sacrifice it takes to accomplish the results. The first step to making a successful goal is to look at what you REALLY want. In our very fast food, in and out, want it now way of life, it is natural to want to achieve some shortterm, “feel good” reward for the work that you do. I suggest setting some of these “feel good” goals along with the long-term ones that you want to achieve. Here are some suggestions for a balanced approach: • Create your Life Bucket List. This should include all the things that you would like to do before you “kick the bucket,” so to speak. Write them down. Examples of this would be

www.ValueNews.com

“things” you want to buy, “experiences” you would like to have, “goals” that you would like to accomplish both now and later in your life. Hopefully this will be a LONG list. After you have created this list, break it down into short, medium, and longterm goals. Then, sort your list by the ones that matter most to you in each category. I usually hear some pretty common themes when I talk to clients about their bucket list. Some of the things on many folks’ shortterm list involve houses, recreational vehicles and vacations. On their long-term lists, I usually see something about retiring comfortably. • Once you have prioritized your list by “when” and “importance to you,” make a detailed, measurable goal for this year about how to begin to attain

that goal. Sometimes in the beginning, it’s about paying down debt or making a specific goal of saving to achieve your overall goal. Most of the time, the goal is not achievable in a single year. You should keep your list somewhere that you will see it on a weekly basis. Review it for progress at the end of each month when you pay your bills. You are in this for the long haul. Don’t get discouraged. Stay the course. Your life bucket list is a changing, living document. It is not written in stone and it’s okay to occasionally change some of your ideas. However, be mindful of the changes that you make and why. To help you stay on track, choose a really good financial advisor. Pick someone you can trust, who understands you, and who will help you with the nuts and bolts of your overall financial goals and the day to day decisions about how to get there. Stop Snoring and Save Your Health Sleep apnea not only causes snoring, but can have serious health consequences – it has been implicated in hypertension and cardiovascular disease. By Steve White, D.D.S At White Smile Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we would like to alert everyone to a condition that is a major health concern: sleep apnea. We treat sleep apnea with fitted appliances. The public has become more aware of the disorder because research has disclosed its devastating consequences. It has been implicated in hypertension and cardiovascular disease, leading to strokes and heart attacks. These, in turn, lead to increased susceptibility to diseases that include sexual dysfunction, compromised immune systems, learning and memory loss, irritability, and mental and emotional health issues. Apnea occurs because the body is unable to obtain sufficient amounts of oxygen during sleep. The patient is essentially startled awake gasping for air. We fit patients with oval appliances that open the airway and allow for a healthy night’s sleep. Snoring, choking or gasping for air throughout the night will be eliminated. I recommend sleep studies administered by a physician to determine the severity of the problem, with a diagnosis and recommended treatment. In severe cases, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines are recommended. Because some patients cannot tolerate sleeping with a mask, the appliance is an option. These Is your spouse’s snoring keeping devices are you awake at night? Sleep apnea also fitted to help eliminate may be the culprit. snoring. of all ages, affects fat reserves rather than lean muscle. The injections help fat cells metabolize quickly, so patients see results in pounds and inches almost from the beginning. “We provide patients with a way to jumpstart weight loss while they learn to replace bad eating and lifestyle habits with healthy ones,” says Malissa Spacek, managing partner of BA Med Spa.

By Sheryl Sowell

When the New Year comes around, many of us make the same resolution to transform our bodies and finally look and feel how we want. Make 2015 the year you actually achieve your goals! Losing weight isn’t easy. In fact, it may be one of the hardest things you’ve ever attempted. “Why?” we ask. Melody Spacek of BA Med Spa explains, “The truth behind weight loss is that there is no one cure-all plan. Each of us has different needs, causing us to lose weight differently, which is exactly why our staff treats each of our patients on an individual basis.” BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is here to help you achieve your goals. Men and women in their medically supervised weight loss programs have reported impressive weight loss results and formed positive new eating habits. One option in the pro-

physician. The information obtained from a patient’s medical history and lab results is then analyzed along with their condition, current lifestyle, and needs to form a customized plan. The weight loss plans at BA Med Spa combine different tools and medications along with constant support both during a patient’s weight loss journey and after this goal is achieved, to ensure patients keep the pounds off for good. Diabetics, women who have just given birth, people preparing for weight loss surgery or who have already had weight loss surgery, and those with numerous other health considerations can be counted among the many patients who have reached and maintained their weight goals. “There’s a newfound self confidence when people look good on the outside and feel good on the inside,” says Malissa. After reaching their weight loss goals, many patients choose CoolSculpting® to complete their new body transformation. This innovative procedure allows patients to lose any of their remaining problem areas, such as stubborn bumps and bulges, without surgery or downtime. CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical technology that targets and cools unwanted fat cells in a selected area to induce a noticeable, naturallooking reduction in fat. Unlike most other meth-

ods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, no anesthesia, no surgery and no downtime. Patients often spend time reading, working on their laptops or simply relaxing while undergoing this treatment. Developed by Harvard scientists, this procedure uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen – healthy cells remain healthy. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. CoolSculpting is safe, FDA-cleared and effective. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results seen after one to three months. Treatment areas may include the abdomen, upper abdomen, love handles, bra line, inner thighs and backs of thighs.

Feel Like You’re Living in a Fog or Cloud? TMS Therapy is a proven non-drug therapy for depression. By Dr. Jeff McIlroy

At Strength of Mind Behavioral, we are dedicated to making psychiatry innovative, effective and accessible throughout our area. By using diverse, personalized and comprehensive treatment methods, we aim to meet a variety of patients’ needs. We were the first in Tulsa to provide TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). TMS therapy is an FDA approved, non-invasive medical treatment for major depression. The treatment gives direct MRI strength magnetic pulse stimulation to the frontal lobe of the brain, compelling neurons to start firing, which leads to restoring the brain to normal functioning levels while lifting moods and encouraging ambition. TMS therapy has many advantages, including no medical side effects, the patient is fully awake during treatments, and results are known definitely within four to six weeks. Our team strives to partner with you in your journey to regain your quality of life, restore your health and rediscover a life that is free from depression. TMS therapy is now covered by insurance companies including Medicare. Consider this testimonial from one of our patients: “For the past 20 plus years, I have struggled with depression and anxiety. I have hopped from doctor to doctor seeking help, only to be prescribed endless numbers of anti-depressants and various anxiety medications. I’ve endured

By Jim Butcher Dr. Craig Day warns Tulsa residents: it is best to be prepared to protect your health and your body from low temps, snow and ice that come every year. Some years are worse than others. “Before that first snowflake falls, it’s important for you to visit our office to ensure you are in top form,’’ Dr. Day urges. He also asks, do you know how much of a significant risk shoveling snow can be? “It’s significant. Don’t learn the hard way and end up in the hospital.” Located at 31st and Harvard, Dr. Day’s office provides a full spectrum of chiropractic services. There is no good reason to live with back or neck pain, and his mission is to provide relief and help clients avoid surgery. People experience pain for many reasons. Sometimes, regular activity can cause trauma to vertebra over time, taking months or years to become painful enough to hinder daily life. For others, a specific event causes injury. Shoveling snow or taking down, packing and storing holiday decorations, both inside or outside, can leave you virtually immobile the next morning. In these cases, it is always best to proactively seek therapy. If swift

action is not taken to correct the spine’s alignment, the nerves within the spinal cord will continue to cause pain, which will only grow in intensity. Seldom do these types of injuries work themselves out, no matter how insistent our belief. It is also common, however, for people to believe that back surgery is the most effective way to treat spine-related pain. This all-ornothing approach is unnecessary, says Dr. Day, who has a record of helping scores of patients avoid the operating room. “If you have tried everything, this may be your last stop.” Those who experience lower back pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated disc, spinal stenosis, pinched nerve, degenerative disc disease, or accident or work related injuries are likely to find relief at Dr. Day’s office. Some patients may discover a simple alignment does the trick. Others – especially those with more severe pain – may be intrigued to learn of non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD). Dr. Day utilizes the latest technology, a device called the DRX9000, to relieve the nerve compression that causes pain. By applying distraction force to specific areas, it provides relief

from pain related to bulging and herniated discs, sciatica and even degenerative disc disease. “Patients think it is the coolest thing,” says Dr. Day. “They have never done anything like this, but it feels really good. And it is good for them.” Compared to back surgery, NSSD represents an attractive option for addressing back pain. Patients can avoid the cost of surgery, as well as the recovery time and physical therapy. Whether your back pain is a long-time ailment or a recent injury from dealing with winter, it is best to seek treatment now. Dr. Day and his staff are ready to help you find relief and get back to living a happier life.

The FUTURE of Back Treatment is Here! “After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said ''No!'' to back surgery.

DDoing It Right the First Time, On Time Tulsa Construction & Landscape’s motto is ensuring the company’s success and growth and producing many happy customers.

By Jim Butcher With a love for creating beautiful landscapes and for building things, Edgar Lopez’s two-year-old Tulsa Construction & Landscape is significantly growing, while remaining focused on providing old-fashioned, high-quality service with customer satisfaction. Edgar has 10 years of experience in the construction industry. “Tulsa Construction & Landscape will help homeowners design and build their dreams, and help make the process easy and enjoyable,” says Lopez. “We are a general contracting firm with a core of six experienced employees that provides both residential handyman and commercial construction services to Tulsa, Jenks, Bixby, Broken Arrow and Owasso.” “We also design, install and repair retaining walls,” he explains. Retaining walls have a variety of purposes, from creating terraces to helping a homeowner control erosion and reduce the amount of grass to mow. You may be considering a water feature for your yard. A water garden is a great accent to any landscape. Some are man-made ponds designed by a landscaping expert to hold both flora and fauna, and some ponds even feature gold and koi fish. If you love water but aren’t in the market for a water feature, per-

Whatever your needs are, Lopez wants to discuss your project regardless of size, cost or complexity. Lopez is to build relationships with customers based upon doing an outstanding job, being honest and having sound communication. Lopez believes that these relationships are very important and will be extremely beneficial to both the customer and Lopez’s company in the long run. “I believe if a customer is treated fairly from start to finish it will be best for everyone. I want everyone to know that I don’t cut corners. I do the job right and get it done on time.”

“While my company is relative new, our commitment to client satisfaction is apparent in every aspect of our business. The quality of our workmanship shows from custom tile jobs or home remodeling to commercial build-outs, repairs and renovations. No job is too large or small,” he said. “We will provide you with a seamless, turn-key operation on a wide variety of construction services.” Please consider the following when you are choosing a

35 Years of Creating Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms

Tony Sementi, owner of Tile by Tony, offers customers tips on choosing the right contractor for your home project. By Jim Butcher With nearly 35 years of experience in remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, Tony Sementi, who owns and operates Tile by Tony in Catoosa, emphasizes, “We do things differently than most contractors.” And as a result, he has developed a “Seven-Point Guide” on How to Pick a Contractor for this type of project. 1. Scope of work. Knowing exactly what you want done will help generate a detailed, accurate and less expensive bid. Be consistent and give identical information to all bidders. He suggests, share your budget with the contractor prior to the bid and consider doing the job in stages, if the estimate is too high. 2. Ownership oversight. Are you prepared to stay home to oversee the job, chase down materials, clean up job sites, and accept less than high-quality work? Then the low bidder will probably work for you. Do you want to feel completely safe leaving your family and belongings at home while you’re at work? Then be prepared to hire a professional. “Remember, as with most things in life, you get what

you pay for,” said Sementi. “I don’t want my customers and any member of their families to be scared. I want you to have peace of mind when my men are working in your homes,” he said. Tenure of his 15 employees range from the newest of seven years to one he hired in 1991. 3. Know the difference between an amateur and a professional. You immediately know a

professional. They are on time to meetings or will communicate with you about any delay in meeting you, Sementi said. “They will be very knowledgeable on all aspects of a project. A professional will rarely throw out numbers; a professional’s bid will be very detailed, with scope of work and the cost of each item. This protects both parties. If it is not itemized, it’s not included.”

4. Get references. The Better Business Bureau, the Home Builder’s Association, and online sites like Angie’s List are also a good place to start, he continued. “Listen to your gut, it usually knows. Ask for recent references. Even a lousy contractor has had a good job or two,” he adds. To be on the safe side, check them out! And don’t overlook the obvious. Has the contractor done this

Page 11

kind of work before? For example, hiring a contractor who does excellent backsplash work does not mean that he can remodel a shower. 5. Communication is a biggie. “Without good communication between you and your contractor, the job will fail to meet your expectations,” Sementi said. “Communication is to construction like location is to real estate.” 6. Magnetic sign on a truck or brick and mortar? Though not a guarantee of quality, brick and mortar will show that he has a commitment to the community. 7. Verify your contractor’s workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. Most homeowners fail to check these basic things. Your homeowner’s insurance will not cover you if someone gets hurt on your job. You could lose your home. Sementi said, most people prefer to hire one company for the entire project; this helps both the homeowner and the contractor in completing the project on time and reducing expense.

TThree Broadway Smashes The Broken Arrow PAC Foundation wraps up Spotlight Series. By Adam J. Foreman From Grammy winners to renowned Broadway shows to everything in between, the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation continues to bring the world to Broken Arrow with its 2014-2015 Spotlight Series, with only three shows remaining! The series continues with the Tony-winning musical “Anything Goes” on January 25, the Oklahoma premier of “Peter and the Starcatcher” on February 24, and concludes with The Midtown Men on April 17. Tickets are on sale now at the BAPAC Box Office located at 701 S. Main in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at (918) 2595778, Monday through Friday. Patrons can also visit www.brokenarrowpac.com or the BAPAC Facebook page at facebook.com/ brokenarrowpac for show updates and more. All aboard! The saucy and splendid production of “Anything

Goes” is a winner of three 2011 Tony awards including Best Musical Revival and Choreography, and is making its way to Broken Arrow on January 25. This musical is about crazy antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Peppering this Cole Porter first-class comedy are some of musical theater’s most memorable standards, including “I Get a Kick out of You,” “You’re the Top,” and of course, “Anything Goes.” The AP exclaims it as, “So DELIGHTFUL, So DELICIOUS, So DE-LOVELY!” For the first time in Spotlight Series history, the BAPAC Foundation is welcoming a play to its lineup. The grownup’s prequel

www.ValueNews.com to Peter Pan called “Peter and the Starcatcher” flies through Broken Arrow on February 24. Hailed by The New York Times as “the most exhilarating storytelling on Broadway in decades,” this comedy takes a hilarious romp through Neverland. Winner of five Tony awards, this is the innovative and imaginative play based on the best-selling novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. A company of a dozen actors play more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up? On April 17, The Midtown Men close out the sixth annual

BAPAC Foundation Spotlight Series. This sensational production reunites four stars from the original cast of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys.” Tony award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony award nominee J. Robert Spencer star in this one-of-a-kind concert experience celebrating the music that defined the ‘60s. These talented entertainers shared the Broadway stage for more than a 1,000 performances in the megahit “Jersey Boys.” Now as The Midtown Men, they have thrilled crowds on concert stages and symphony halls across the continent and have delighted television audiences with performances on “Good Morning America,” “Access Hollywood,” “Katie” and “The Chew.” Additionally, the Men collaborated with rock ‘n’ roll icon Stevie Van Zandt on their first radio single, “All Alone On Christmas,” featuring Van Zandt and members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. The group also had the distinct honor of opening the National Tree Lighting Ceremony at the White House.

Money Memories, Lessons Learned

“Financially Fit” is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. By Jocelyn Wood Edmund Burke once wrote, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” When it comes to money and how to manage it, our past offers valuable lessons. Our experiences

with money – good and bad – can motivate us to change our present way of spending and saving. We asked RCB Bank employees to share their first money memories and the lessons they learned growing up. “I didn’t have a very good

education on money,” said Jennifer Lane, teller. “My parents were never good savers. They’d always tell us we couldn’t do things because we ‘didn’t have any money,’ so as a child I missed out on a lot, never did sports or activities. My parents also have bad credit and couldn’t

Marni Rammage thanks her mother for teaching her at a young age how to budget.

www.ValueNews.com help co-sign on student loans. This made me realize as a parent I wanted to spend my money wisely so my kids could be kids and participate in activities.” “When I was very little, my mother wanted to teach me how to budget, so she put mason jars in the kitchen cupboard with tags on each one – savings, spending, tithe – and taught me how to split up my allowance each week and later my first paychecks,” said Marni Rammage, customer service representative. “Since she started me so young, it became a habit that carried over into my adulthood. Although I don’t use mason jars anymore, the principal of budgeting is instilled in me.” “The first money I earned was for babysitting,” said Julie Gaches, loan officer. “My dad convinced me that I should buy savings bonds with some of it. He told me that it was a ‘really good deal – you give them $12 and you get back $25.’ He left out that it would be 10 years or more to get the $25 back! Another very important lesson I learned growing up was to make savings automatic.” “When I was around age 8, I noticed my mom always took time on the weekends to pull out this little book,” said Sean McKee, mortgage loan originator. “She kept adding and subtracting numbers and I wondered what she was doing. One day I asked and she said, ‘I’m balancing my checkbook. Balancing is a good way to know how much money you have left in the bank.’ She asked me if I ever wondered why she kept all of her receipts. I hadn’t paid much attention to notice. At that point, I learned the importance of keeping track of your purchases and deposits.” “My great uncle gave me a beef

bouillon container full of pennies when I was five years old,” said Robin Landsaw, retail coordinator. “He told me if I take care of my pennies, the dollars would take care of themselves. I still have the container with the pennies in it today to remind me of the importance of saving, even if that means the simple act of saving my pennies.” “I started working when I was 12. I learned real fast how hard you had to work for what little money you earned,” said Carol Houston, banker. “I learned how fast money spends versus how long it takes to earn. The best advice given to me was always pay yourself first. Take a little something out of each paycheck to put back for your future.” “At age 11, I got my first lesson about money and loans,” said Skip Mefford, branch president. “I was completely infatuated with this hunting bow and I didn’t want it, I needed it. It cost $125. I had a $10 a week allowance but no money saved at the time, so I pestered my dad until he decided to give me my first loan. He lent me the money and collected half of my allowance every week. It taught me that if something is given to us, we tend to not appreciate the item as much as if we had to work for it.”

ing factor of success or failure. The thinner the application, the longer the finish will last. With the waterborne painting system, mil thickness is half of what it is with urethane paints. More than 70 percent of the world’s auto manufacturers are using the waterborne paint system today. Oliver Reiff has been the leader of Premier’s upholstery and window tinting department for 12 years. “After the collision repairs and painting are done,” says Oliver, “I do the rest.” InstallerNet is an online provider that recommends leading service providers to consumers by suggesting local companies that will install aftermarket products. Premier provides sound system installations for InstallerNet as well as leather seats and leather kits, matching or custom seat covers, and increasingly-popular seat heaters. They also provide window tinting.

By Duane Blankenship “It’s always good to do something positive for the environment, especially when it doesn’t mean having to sacrifice quality or productivity,” says Ralph Higinbotham, owner of Premier Collision in Broken Arrow. Premier is a trusted collision repair shop well known for its expertise and integrity. Nearly six years ago, Higinbotham and Premier made the decision to switch from urethane paints to a new waterborne system developed by PPG that offered an effective solution for lowering volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and thus improve air quality and the environment. Premier was one of the first shops in Oklahoma and the first in the Tulsa area to convert to the new PPG system. VOCs are organic, carbonbased chemicals that evaporate at room temperature and have a direct effect on air quality. They cause air pollution and may be harmful to your health. The VOC content of paint is generally indicated on the container, and paint manufacturers utilize a classification system that describes the VOC content from minimal to very high. Higinbotham says, “Traditionally, emulsions that use water as a solvent, such as industry-leading PPG products, have a zero, minimum, or low VOC rating. Oil-based paints generally have a medium, high or very high rating. With future generation tech-

Consider this: if a shop that mixes an average of one gallon of solvent-borne basecoat per week were to convert to waterborne

basecoat, that shop alone could prevent over 300 pounds of VOCs from being emitted into the air we breathe. This is the equivalent to taking more than 1,000 vehicles off the road annually. Higinbotham says that Premier Collision uses an average of four gallons per week, the

equivalent of taking 4,000 vehicles off the road annually. The Envirobase® High Performance basecoat product has modified traditional thinking, and its advanced techniques are producing substantial eco-friendly results. Mil thickness of paint is a determin-

BBixby First ‘Gigabit’ City in State BTC Broadband brings ultra high speed Internet to the community.

By Jim Butcher Bixby is one of the fastest growing communities in the state and has an estimated population of 23,228 (2013). A local announcement on December 3 may provide fuel to keep it growing even faster. Buying a home has changed in the new millennium. Before, buyers usually shopped for the best house they could find using the following criteria: A home that fits your needs in a good location, with the best possible terms and best possible price. In today’s society and Internet culture, lifestyle and business, access to dependable, high speed Internet is critical. Following a joint announcement by the mayor and BTC Broadband, Bixby becomes the first city in Oklahoma to have fiber based gigabit Internet service. What does this mean? “This technology is going to put Bixby on par with progressive urban centers in America for weboriented consumers, places such as Dallas; Austin; Kansas City, Missouri; Miami, Florida; and just a handful of others,” Mayor John Easton said at the announcement at SpiritBank Event Center. BTC Broadband of Bixby is offering the service exclusively to fiber-to-the-home neighborhoods, which include more than 45 residential developments and roughly

4,600 homes in the BTC area. A total of 14 additional residential developments with that fiber capability are slated for construction.

Speeds of one gigabit per second, also referred to as “The Big Gig,” are about 100 times faster than the average, fixed high-speed

Internet connection. At gigabit speeds, connections can handle multiple streams of large-format, high-definition content such as online video calls, movies, and immersive educational experiences. To illustrate just how fast one gigabit is, BTC Broadband President Scott Floyd said, “Think in terms of downloading a two-hour high definition movie. A 10 Mbps Internet connection will take 53 minutes to download that movie. That same movie will download in roughly 32 seconds with a one gig Internet connection.” Floyd said his company is also modifying their other Internet offerings to satisfy people’s increasing need to quickly stream, download and connect multiple devices simultaneously. “Our bottom tier offering at 60 Mbps Internet access begins higher than most company’s top tier. BTC will offer 60 Mbps, 100 Mbps and 1000 Mbps (a gigabit).” About 42 communities in 14 states currently are served by ultrahigh-speed fiber Internet providers, according to the Fiber to The Home Council. “BTC Broadband’s foresight to consistently expand and reinforce our infrastructure now allows us to take the lead in a very exciting initiative,” Floyd said. “As Internet usage is growing at exponential rates, BTC is proud to be

able to unleash the power of fiber and bring world-class broadband speeds to the community.” Naturally, the Bixby Chamber is excited, said Krystal Crockett, president and CEO. “We know Bixby is a thriving community and our Chamber boasts some of the highest growth numbers in the state, but gigabit Internet service is a huge economic incentive worthy of new businesses as well as ones already established here.” BTC Broadband offers $99 per month for the “Big Gig,” $59 for 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and $49 for 60 Mbps. BTC celebrated its 100th year in business this year. Previously known as Bixby Telephone, the company branched out into offering Internet service in 1993. Nine years ago, Bixby Telephone changed its name to BTC Broadband.

Compete or Eat at Soul Food Cook-Off

Enjoy delicious meats, vegetables, desserts, breads and more made by the finest soul food chefs around at the 9th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off.

If you consider yourself a top notch soul food cook, you still have time to enter the Cook-Off.

By Sheryl Sowell

The 9th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food CookOff will take place at the Muskogee Civic Center, January 17, 2015. So far, dozens of chefs have registered for the event and will prepare their delicious soul food cuisine for thousands of attendees to enjoy. “The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off is the perfect venue to celebrate the rich African American heritage of soul food,” says Cassandra Gaines, event creator and marketing director of the Muskogee Civic Center. “Soul food is simply comfort food made from scratch – sweet potato pie, smothered chicken and rice, smothered pork chops, homemade macaroni and cheese, greens, hot water corn bread, candied yams, peach cobbler. We bring together a diverse community of people who enjoy the tradition of enjoying good food together and having fun.” One of Cassandra’s responsibilities as marketing

www.ValueNews.com director of the Civic Center is to host multicultural community events. In 2004, she had the idea for a soul food cook-off to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea quickly caught on and is now spreading across the country. In each city, the event has featured some of the finest local chefs, until now unheralded, serving soul food to a sell-out crowd. Chefs from around the state and country are invited to participate in the cook-off. Categories include meats, vegetables, desserts, homemade breads, and miscellaneous homemade items, such as pickles, pickled okra, jellies, jams, hot sauce and barbecue sauce. Cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each category. “We have even more people participating this year because the prize money is so high,” says Cassandra. A cash prize for best booth decoration and costume will also be awarded. “Anybody who thinks they can cook is welcome. We have cooks of all ages and from all walks of life,” Cassandra explains. “We have many first-timers and many who return year after year.” The judging panel for the cook-off consists of professionals who either own or

manage a restaurant. “The judges are different every year, and the cooks do not know who the judges are. It’s a fair game for everyone,” Cassandra says. “There is also a people’s choice award so those who attend can vote for their favorite dish.” If you’re not the best cook but love some good soul food, admission to the event is $8, and includes all the delicious food you can handle. “This family-friendly event is guaranteed to produce fond memories and plenty of full stomachs,” says Cassandra. The Dr. Martin Luther King Soul Food Cook-Off will be held Saturday, January 17 at the Muskogee Civic Center, located at 425 Boston St. The afternoon features great food, fun, cash prizes and an educational component regarding the history of soul food and cooking tips from some of the country’s top chefs.

money,” says Melanie. “It’s about the stories people create about money and what it represents in their relationships.” Melanie and Waterstone Private Wealth Management want clients to feel special, because they are. “We want them to know that we truly care about them and their families,” says Melanie. She considers it an honor to work with her clients and tries to convey that in every conversation they have, in the over-and-above service

A Garage Door for any Home continued from page 1 every project we do,” says Tammy. The company provides sales, installations and service in the greater Tulsa area. They offer overhead doors, repairs, spring replacements, tune ups and related services for any home. “We can design just about any garage door a customer can imagine,” said Steve. “Most of us never think about servicing our garage door openers, doors, springs and related system parts,” says Steve. “Springs, rollers and hinges need lubrication at recommended intervals of six months. When properly maintained, you’ll find that your system runs quieter and smoother.” Steve recommends a lubricant developed for garage doors that can improve performance and extend life on chain and belt systems. Stop by Superior Overhead Door and pick up a can of the spray lubricant or call and schedule a time for them to inspect and service your garage door system. Insulated garage doors are still popular and effective in keeping out winter’s cold. The pan door product is styrofoam insulation with vinyl backing that helps deaden noise and adds strength to the door as it insulates. Some door styles can be upgraded with an insulation kit that is attractive to doit-yourselfers, or if you elect to have Superior do the installation for you, they will also check spring balance, lubricate the system and make adjustments as needed. “If you ever need a spring replaced, you might consider an extended-life variety

that extends spring life from the usual 10,000 cycles (open and close) to 25,000 cycles,” says Steve. “The difference in price is not significant and is worth considering for all the value-added benefits.” Steve cautions that all garage door springs can and will fatigue with use. What Does It Mean to Be Healthy? continued from page 1 Assisted by Naturopathic Dr. Mark Sherwood, Dr. Michele operates under the “4E” philosophy. “The ‘4’ stands for the four elements of a person – physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. The ‘E’ stands for EVER. We want each person to be well in each of these interdependent areas. When a person experiences wellness as a whole, they experience PEACE, rather than experiencing DIS-EASE.” “We can and do help people. This is not smoke and mirrors; it is real life. We care about each patient and truly want to help them get well in each part of their life,” says Dr. Mark. Do you want to be an individual riddled with chronic disease, aches and pains, and debilitating illness, or would you rather have the vim and vigor of a 30-year-old while currently in your 50s, 60s and beyond? Drs.

Michele and Mark have created a pathway to wellness by changing lifestyle from the ground up. It is a relatively undisputed belief that lifestyle plays an astronomical role in long term health and wellbeing. Each patient is educated, equipped, and inspired to be their best and take charge of their own health. Don’t take your health for granted by being uneducated and a victim of the Standard American Diet (SAD). The typical SAD, loaded with sugar, processed, packaged junk, and trans- and fake fats is taking a huge toll on our health. Metabolic disease is occurring at earlier ages than ever before. Once a disease thought to onset in the older years, Type 2 diabetes is showing up in our young people. “When we learn to tame our lifestyle, we can control not only diabetes, but other metabolic dis-

eases and syndromes of chronic inflammation,” says Dr. Michele. Drs. Michele and Mark work with patients with all types of imbalance, including hormonal. Most imbalance has its root in how we live our daily lives. The gasoline we put in the engine of our human motor vehicle is responsible for the type of mileage we get. “All chronic conditions begin with inflammation,” Dr. Michele explains. “Inflammation is set in motion when the internal organs and the immune system are compromised by being met with the day-in, day-out challenge of polluted nutrition. This pollution leads to chronic debility, such as joint aches and pain, brain fogginess, delayed recovery time, depression, headaches, and weight gain. These are all signs that one’s metabolic status may need medical attention.” Each patient is educated on

their own biomarkers. Imbalances and deficiencies are uncovered and addressed. True to their commitment to healing patients from the root cause of their ailment and empowering them with the resources to maintain the best possible health, Drs. Michele and Mark generate a personalized, multi-week plan, complete with short and longer term goals, for each patient. Dr. Mark adds, “Each patient will leave with a roadmap to better health.” The pair also holds monthly educational classes for their patient base covering topics such as detoxification, inflammation, family wellness, fatigue, and stress management. Additionally, this busy duo has a weekly television show called 4E TV, currently airing in Tulsa. Among the newest inclusions at FMI, the doctors have begun using a unique full-strand DNA

test to customize wellness plans. This unique test tells each patient what to do, eat, and take. If you are tired of not knowing exactly how much to eat, what type of exercise to do, and what supplements to take, this test is for you. “There is no time like the present to make a change. We simply do not have time to not have time. We promote a team environment based on trust, accountability, and excellence. You will get results.”

Woody Guthrie W Center Growing Ronald D. Cohen donates more than 500 books and collectibles to Woody Guthrie Center Archives. By Todd Cunningham

Folk music author and academic Ronald D. Cohen recently donated his personal collection including over 500 books related to the folk music genre, Woody Guthrie, and his contemporaries to the Woody Guthrie Center. The books will be added to the WGC research library for academics to access. In addition, the collection includes multiple boxes of collectible material and rare items that will be housed in the Center vault beside the Woody Guthrie Archives and Phil Ochs Archives. The items include, among numerous other rare items, one of Pete Seeger’s very first mimeographed, self-published banjo instruction booklets (there were only 100 printed in 1948), along with Seeger’s freshman yearbook from his early years at Harvard, which also pictures his classmate, a young John F. Kennedy. “We are honored to be the caretakers of this special collection of items that will be added to the archives of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs, and we look

NEW!

forward to sharing them with our patrons and researchers,” said WGC Executive Director Deana McCloud. “Truly there are too many treasures to mention…so many things that will be excellent

exhibit pieces as well as academic and educational resources.” The collection also contains complete runs of folk music periodicals such as Sing Out! and Broadside, and photos from Sis Cunningham’s collection of early Newport Folk Festival performers. The Woody Guthrie Center,

www.ValueNews.com located at 102 E. Brady St. in Tulsa, is more than a museum; instead, it is a center of investigation for inspiration. By providing examples of Woody’s ability to use his creativity as a way of expressing the world around him, the Center encourages others to find their voices and the power that lies within the creative process. Public programs are free with paid admission of $8 (discounts available for senior, student, youth, groups and military). Beginning Friday, January 9, the Woody Guthrie Center will hold a weekly afterschool music program for students ages 12 and above, providing a diverse educational experience in creating

a band and managing it. During the program, students will take part in a variety of activities including songwriting, instrument and vocal lessons, band management, and learning to work together as a band. They will then be given the opportunity to create a song from start to finish including recording a polished version and filming a music video for it. Participants will also learn music and cultural history by exploring the work and music of Woody Guthrie and tracking his influence to some of their favorite artists of today. At the end of the program, the musicians will perform at a local venue and put into practice what they have learned. They will be in charge of promoting their performance using social media, distributing fliers, and using other grass-roots efforts. The program meets every Friday, 4:30 to 6 p.m., and runs through mid-May. The cost is $50 in January and $80 per month thereafter with scholarships available and a 10% discount for members.
