Considering back surgery? Dr. Craig Day offers an effective alternative. By Sheryl Sowell

Do you have chronic back pain that comes back regardless of what you do? Have you resigned to the fact that you will simply have to live with it, or have surgery? Think again. If you suffer from lower back pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated disc, spinal stenosis, pinched nerve, degenerative disc disease, accident or work related injuries, consider a proven effective solution offered by Dr. Craig Day which does not involve drugs, injections or going under the knife. Dr. Day provides an individualized treatment plan for each of his patients using nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD).

“New advances in the treatment of back pain are helping people just like you get their lives back. We offer Vertebral Axial Decompression with the DRX 9000 spine decompression machine,” says Dr. Day. This therapy aims to reduce or eliminate nerve compression in the spine through the application of distraction force. With the DRX 9000, Dr. Day is able to help patients avoid costly and risky surgeries and find relief and healing. A four-year multi-center follow-up study on the lasting effects of NSSD showed remarkable levels of (continued on page 26)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

INFIDELITY: LOVE, SEX, & MONEY BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Having been a therapist for many years, one of the most devastating issues when working with couples is infidelity. There are many forms of infidelity. Let’s review three of them. Most often what comes to mind is a sexual affair. A sexual affair is when a person engages in sexual activity with someone other than their spouse. This could be anything from sexual intercourse, to kissing, to making out. Also included in this category are online affairs through chat rooms, dating and pornography sites. A lesser known type of affair is what is called an emotional affair. Emotional infidelity is defined when one partner goes outside the primary relationship to get his or her emotional needs met — and it is more common and more damaging than you might imagine. If you are talking about problems that are happening in your marriage or with your spouse with someone else of the opposite sex, if you find yourself taking extra time getting ready in the morning to impress a certain coworker, if you are texting excessively with someone who isn’t

your partner, if you are hiding emails from your spouse, you may already be having an emotional affair. Finally, there is Financial Infidelity. Financial Infidelity is the secretive act of spending money, possessing credit and credit cards, holding secret accounts or stashes of money, borrowing money, or otherwise incurring debt unknown to one’s spouse. MSN Money reported on a study in 2008 that showed 50% of respondents had committed some form of financial infidelity. At least two or three times a year, I have new prospective clients come in to visit with me that are struggling with financial infidelity. It most often finally comes to roost because of the accumulated debt and creditor issues. The following are some signs of financial infidelity and ways to go about uncovering dishonest financial behavior. Review Documents. Review tax returns, bank account statements, credit card statements, and investment statements regularly. Look at the inflows, outflows, and where the money goes. When

money has been hidden, the biggest sign is a real disconnect between income reported and the money available to pay the bills. Look for transfers between accounts that you were not aware of. If you see this, try to get info on why the money was transferred to another account and where this account is. Changes in behavior. Watch for changes in your spouse’s behavior. You know what you consider normal behavior in your spouse. If they start acting differently, it may be cause for suspicion. Excessive secrecy, changes in money flow, unexplained gaps between income and expenditures all could be cause for concern. Changes to accounts. If addresses are changed and statements go to another address, that is a red flag. Bank accounts in a family member’s name should raise questions. Bank statements showing regular wire transfers or checks to a random person should also be a concern. Review all signed legal agreements. Read and review all tax returns. Make sure you

understand everything that you have signed in the past and are signing. In order to prevent financial infidelity, both partners need to be involved in the finances. The way people get taken advantage of, no matter what the relationship, is when they turn a blind eye. You need to be able to trust your spouse while at the same time

know what is going on. Stay faithful, my friends. For more information visit www.waterstonewealth.com. Melanie Hasty-Grant, Experienced Licensed Professional Counselor and Managing Principal at Waterstone Private Wealth Management. Securities offered through LPL Financial, Member FINRA/SIPC.

Manufactured Stone that M Makes an Impression Impressions in Stone celebrates 10 years and a new showroom. By Christopher Davis

Looking to update your home or business building? Like the look of stone, but wary of the cost and hassle associated with natural stone? Look no further – Impressions in Stone has the perfect solution. Impressions in Stone spe-

cializes in manufactured stone, a cast-cement product designed to look like real stone. Essentially, natural stones are used to create various molds. A special blend of Portland cement, lightweight aggregate, water and color

pigment is poured into the molds. The result of this process offers a broad range of colors and shapes from which to choose. “We can match just about any pattern or color scheme,” says Mike Howell, vice presi-

Mike Howell, VP of marketing, and Dagan Heaps, owner of Impressions in Stone.

dent of marketing. Because everything is mixed, poured and cured at their warehouse, Impressions in Stone is ideal for clients who aim for a very specific aesthetic. Manufactured stone is a cost-effective alternative to utilizing natural stone in a building. The basic cost of material and transport for natural stone can be quite high, as are installation costs. Natural stone also may not be ideal for some buildings or locations, since its weight requires significantly more planning and engineering effort. A house on a slope, say alongside a lake or river, is an excellent candidate for manufactured stone’s less restrictive structural requirements. Manufactured stone can be a real problem solver. The company deals directly with designers, contractors and owners, and has a showroom with plenty of samples to aid in the selection process. Once a style and color scheme is decided upon, rubber molds are put together and the mixture of cement, pigment and additives is poured. Following the curing process, the stones are stacked on pallets and delivered to the project site. While the more experienced do-it-yourselfer could manage installation (the product comes with step-bystep instructions), the company recommends allowing professionals to handle bigger jobs and can recommend a

qualified contractor. Manufactured stone, in addition to being a more costeffective and customizable alternative to natural stone, is also a durable material. “All our stone products carry a 50-year warranty,” says Dagan Heaps, owner. Dagan Heaps started Impressions in Stone 10 years ago, following a 15-year career with an international consulting and software company. Heaps, who has a degree in industrial engineering from the University of Oklahoma, discovered the product through Eaves Stone Products while building his own home. He was so impressed with the concept that he approached Eaves about a joint venture. In mid2004, the young business was founded. After a few high profile contracts (including banks and casinos), the business took off. Office hours at Impressions in Stone are 5:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but Howell and Heaps are able to make appointments outside normal hours. Drop by their new showroom, located just north of 15th between Yale and Sheridan, for a tour. For more information, contact

AA Concrete Solution Camps Construction pours and beautifies concrete driveways, patios and retaining walls.

By Duane Blankenship

Camps Construction specializes in the design, fabrication and installation of concrete for the home. They can work their magic on new or existing concrete surfaces, interiors or exteriors. They create

designs in concrete floors, prep concrete for surface restoration, protect and enhance concrete, and apply stains and sealers. According to Gerardo Campos, owner of Camps

Construction, “We specialize in concrete work. We have a long list of satisfied customers and get a lot of our jobs from referrals.” Concrete is environmentally friendly; it is composed

of renewable resources and can even be recycled into granular fill or concrete aggregate. Concrete also brightens up the area around your home or business at night. Other benefits to concrete include its durability, longevity, and the extremely low maintenance required to keep it clean and looking great If your driveway or patio is beginning to pit or flake, now is a good time to consider greatly improving your home’s curb appeal by having them torn out and replaced. Camps Construction also installs man-made concrete stone retaining walls, often replacing old railroad ties that have long since lost their beauty and function due to deterioration. Concrete stone walls are a great way to create a “get-back-to-nature” look around any home, patio or yard. Stones come in a nice range of shapes, colors and textures and do a great job enhancing your home’s natural surroundings. They can be used as retaining and freestanding wall systems that are durable even in the face of Oklahoma’s constantly changing weather. Gerardo and his team have an inexpensive way to beautify concrete floors without the expense of genuine ceramic or marble tiles. Camps Construction will create a faux finish in the concrete, inside the home or on the patio, sidewalk or drive.

Page 7

Colors and designs are extensive and provide beautiful floors for years to come. Camps Construction offers in a variety of construction work including landscaping, retaining walls, concrete driveways, outdoor kitchens, patios and decks. Gerardo has been doing business in Tulsa and surrounding areas for ten years and is known for his integrity, workmanship and budget performance. He insists on attention to customer satisfaction. “I want customers to know that they can count on my work to be done the right way, within budget, and that we both will be proud of the finished product,” he said. “I do everything possible to meet the expectations of my customers.” Estimates on all projects are free, and Gerardo says he uses only the finest construction materials and services on every job. After you’ve selected Gerardo and Camps Construction to do your project, Gerardo says he will always be on the job site. “I’m sure you’ll be happy working with me as I complete your project,” said Gerardo. “Give me a call for a free quote.” For more information, contact

Patients Enjoy "New Life" with Wellness and Hormonal Balance Michele Neil, D.O., offers a wellness-based program that educates and empowers patients to enjoy the best possible health at any age. By Deanna Rebro

Dr. Michele Neil, founder of the Functional Medical Institute.

Michele L. Neil, D.O., offers a wellness-based approach to medical care that educates and empowers patients to enjoy the best possible health at any age. The Functional Medical Institute is not only a medical facility, but a physician-driven educational program that teaches patients how to stay well and out of the doctor’s office. If the Funtcional Medical Institute in Tulsa seems unlike other medical clinics, that’s because it is. The approach is different and so are the results. Founding physician Dr. Michele L. Neil says that her approach to healing is to get to the root cause of the patient’s problems (which commonly occur in a person’s lifestyle). “We provide the knowledge, understanding and tools for the patient to heal and make the lifestyle changes necessary for the best possible outcome,” she explains. A wellness-based approach adds a special flare in looking at nutrition, rest, exercise, stress management and hormone balance. “The emphasis on wellness and preventing disease by educating and empowering my patients brings me great satisfaction in

the practice of medicine.” Dr. Neil, an internal medicine and sports medicine physician, explains her wellness approach. “I take an approach that looks at the whole individual and brings the entire body into balance. Once we achieve balance, we aim to keep it there, allowing for the most optimal and vital life one can lead.” Getting started in the process requires a medical work up with laboratory evaluation (onsite lab) and full physical examination, Inbody composition analysis, nutrition workshops and a 12-week lifestyle education program lead by Lori Lange. The lifestyle nutrition/wellness and coaching program is individualized for each patient. Individualization is another marker that sets the Functional Medical Institute apart. The Physicians Prescription for Nutrition, formulated by Dr. Neil, is comprehensive education for her patients. At least twice a month, Dr. Neil leads comprehensive health and wellness workshops that form the cornerstone of patient understanding and education about their health and the future their health holds. “Your health is your health insurance,” she adds. Dr. Neil believes that many of the chronic diseases can be prevented or even treated by simply the habits of lifestyle. In her nutrition lectures, her many topics include the harmful effects of the Standard American Diet, Hormone

Page 9

Imbalance, Gut Dysfunction, and Inflammation and Stress Management. Most doctors would agree that their patients should lead a healthy lifestyle. “At the Functional Medical Institute we teach patients how to do so.” That is what makes the difference. Dr. Neil not only takes an aggressive approach to lifestyle, but also addresses signs and symptoms of aging. Men go through andropause just like women go through menopause. “Many men and women approaching their 50s just don’t feel themselves anymore.” As hormones decline, things change. Dr. Neil uses a multidimensional approach to hormone replacement that once again is individualized. There are many types of replacement to include patches, pills, creams, injections and pellet implants. She is certified in Age Management Medicine and makes use of the BioTe pellet hormone implants. Although pellet therapy has been used successfully since the 1930’s it is just now making its way into Oklahoma. The Functional Medical Institute strives to meet the unique needs of each patient to balance and improve the quality of life they live. For more information, contact

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Happy 2 0th Anniversa ry to BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR Precision Optical! Feb. 1, 20 14 NEXT PAIR OF EYE GLASSES Do you have a strong prescription? Are you walking around with an unfilled prescription in your pocket? Did you know it is best to get it filled ASAP? Do you realize that strong RX’s DEMAND greater precision with optical center, Bi-focal and MRP placement? Have you had problems with the vision and fit you may have received at shops that herd you through like cattle? Are you hard to fit? Large or small hat size with eyes set close over the nasal area combined with the lower ear syndrome means you need an experienced optician to fit you and keep your eyewear maintained.

Are you tired of feeling baited by unrealistic prices? Only to find out that the eyewear is stripped-down S.V. versions that are cheap, unattractive, fit improperly, scratch and break easily. Many won’t hold adjustments and just don’t have the features you need.

Have you tried conventional surfaced no-line progressives in the past and failed to adapt? Technological advances in “DIGITAL” lens manufacturing have radically improved the optics, fields of vision and dramatically reduced distortion so that almost anyone can wear them. Check out the Seiko Perfas Prestige II on the first two YouTube videos at the bottom of our homepage. These lenses could be extremely helpful to contact lens wearers, those who wear readers over contacts, and those who cannot or will not rely on corrective surgery for their visual correction needs.

Did you know that Precision Optical has been operating since 1994? Located at the northwest corner of 81st and Elm Place in Broken Arrow, we are one of the VERY FEW optical shops that can do emergency gold soldering of your broken eyeglass frames. We can also replace worn and scratched lenses in your fine sunglasses with gray or brown polarized lenses.

You should get your eyes examined every 1-2 years and more often if medical conditions warrant. The eye exam is a two-fold procedure. 1.) Medical health 2.) Corrective refraction. Many are pleasantly surprised to find they see much better after the exam and new lenses, when originally they had felt they had not changed much. Call us today to set up an eye exam!

Precision Optical stocks 800-1000 frames and sunglasses including: Christian Dior · Liz Claiborne · Ralph Lauren · Covergirl · Kenneth Cole · Marchon & Flexon · Tura & Turaflex Ted Baker · Charmant · Dana Buchman · Maui Jim/RX · Wily X/RX · Norma Kamali · And much more!

The key is PRECISION MEASUREMENT and TOTAL ACCURACY. For the past 20 years, George has provided superior service in Broken Arrow, Coweta and South Tulsa and yes, he cuts the lenses himself.

Tulsa Zoo and TYPros: Zoo-Thousand Fourteen Following a successful 2013, TYPros announces 2014 community partnership with the Tulsa Zoo.

By Christopher Davis

Tulsa’s Young Professionals (TYPros) is a nonprofit organization that works to attract and retain young talent in the Tulsa region. They also strive to establish Tulsa’s next generation of business and community leaders. The group was founded

in 2005 as part of Tulsa Regional Chamber’s economic development plan and as a direct response to the region’s challenges with “brain drain” – a phenomenon where new graduates and young professionals move to other regions. TYPros is serving its purpose,

Isaac Rocha, TYPros Chairman, and Shagah Zakerion, TYPros Executive Director.

partnering with major business and charities, inspiring Tulsa’s upcoming leaders, and raising money and awareness for community entities. The TYPros annual Community Partnership program has raised $78,000 over five years for five different nonprofit organizations. TYPros Chairman Isaac Rocha is clear that the credit for such hard work goes directly to the many volunteers who have invested their time and talents. “We can only thank our passionate volunteers for this success. These are young adults who care about the community so much that they are raising money for nonprofit organizations,” Rocha. He is quick to extend the credit and gratitude to the community partners, too. “They understand that attracting and retaining young professionals is important.” Without such partnerships, Tulsa would have a difficult time developing the type of opportunities that encourage young professionals to stick around. Last year, the TYPros’ Community Partner was the

Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa. Volunteers typically give more than 3,000 service hours annually, including but not limited to the community partner. “We donated a little over $12,000 that our volunteers collected throughout the year from event partners and fundraising efforts,” says Zack Stoycoff, communications manager. Recently, TYPros announced their selection the Tulsa Zoo as 2014 Community Partner for 2014. TYPros wants to support the Tulsa Zoo’s 20-year master plan for modernization. The plans include remodeling the exhibits, so children can experience the animals up close. “The return on investment for the city and for the zoo is very big, which is exciting,” says Rocha. He points out that the success of the zoo is connected to the community’s success. The zoo interacts with the city on many levels, from educational outreach at schools, to serving as a field trip destination and attracting tourists from all around. “Part of the reason we picked the zoo is because of its regional impact. A lot of people come from Arkansas and Kansas to Tulsa,” he says. Rocha and his cohorts are excited to put plans into action for 2014. TYPros’ first quarter fundraiser, CharityOkie, is just on the horizon. “It’s karaoke for a cause,” says Rocha. The organization will meet at Fassler Hall for drinks, singing and fun. “There is a twist,” says Rocha.

“You can gong someone off the stage, or jump in front of the line.” For a price, donor contestants will be given special privileges, such as skipping to the front of the line or ringing a gong to chase someone off of the stage. Rocha and Stoycoff are enthusiastic about the event. “It really brings people together in a fun environment to increase awareness for an organization,” says Rocha. But if one is interested in getting involved with TYPros, they do not have to wait for CharityOkie. Monthly Pub Clubs are regular informal meetings put on by TYPros. It is an easy way for potential new members to get acquainted with the organization, and a welcome opportunity for current members to catch up and let off some steam. These evening social events are a fun way to mix a little business with pleasure. They occur the last Tuesday of every month at local bars and restaurants, and hosts donate a portion of their sales from the evening. Follow TYPros on Twitter (@TYPros) and like them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/TYPros) to keep up with this fastmoving group. For more information, contact

SAY NO TO BACK SURGERY After having an MRI, I was diagnosed with having a herniated disc. The pain was like a knife jabbing in my buttock and down my legs. My whole life changed, not being able to escape the disabling pain. After cortisone epidurals in my spine, the pain returned. My doctor told me that I was facing surgery on my back and to prepare to spend thousands of dollars and be off work for several months. Then I found Dr. Day and heard about the success he was having treating disc problems by using a new procedure called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Dr. Day was one of the first doctors in the area to use this new treatment and has had over 30 years experience treating bad backs. So I decided to try it! On a scale of 1-10 my pain was an 8 when I started but after only a few weeks of treatment my pain level dropped to a 0-1. I am now able to get up in the morning and get dressed by myself, put my shoes on without holding on to something (which I haven’t been able to do in a very long time). Needless to say, “I am very happy with my treatment and am so glad I said no to back surgery”.

Thank you Dr. Day for everything you and your staff did for me!

VValentine’s Day Headquarters From traditional to unique, Surceé carries a big variety of gifts for your loved ones.

By Sheryl Sowell

Surceé Gifts & Home has everything you need to show the special people in your life how much you care this Valentine’s Day, with gifts starting at only $5 for your sweetheart, teachers, family

and friends. Owner Laura Sanders says if you want to go the traditional route with giftgiving, her store offers plenty of candy and jewelry. Valentine Crunch

is delicious caramel corn drizzled in chocolate, certain to be a highly appreciated treat. The Waxing Poetic line is sentimental jewelry with a vintage touch. “Waxing Poetic items are so personal, no one ever walks out with the same thing twice. They allow you to tell your journey,” says Laura. As the exclusive Brighton dealer in the Owasso area, Surceé carries their ever-popular charm bar as well as handbags and other jewelry pieces. For those looking for something a little different to give your Valentine, Laura suggests a beautiful piece of home décor from Surceé’s large selection of furniture, mirrors, art pieces, candles,

furnishings and more. “Also, one of our most popular items that ladies love to receive are the beautiful, comfortable Bamboo pajamas and robes.” Surceé employee Kristin Lamont designs handmade vintage cards that will make all your friends and family feel special this Valentine’s Day. If you simply can’t decide on an item, gift certificates always make a great gift, and Surceé offers customers a Wish List option so that there’s no guesswork for loved ones. Store hours are Monday through Friday from 10 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 5. Find them on Facebook under Surcee Gifts.

Lasting, Rejuvenating Results Minimally invasive and effective Liquid Face-Lifts and Facial Contouring by Results Medical Spa As we age, the face begins to lose collagen and elastin which contributes to sagging facial features. The loss of facial volume and elasticity also leads to the formation of wrinkles, lines and folds. A Liquid Facelift is a technique for injecting advanced dermal fillers, such as Voluma® to lift and contour facial features. A nonsurgical Liquid Face Lift can be undertaken to accomplish any of the following: 1. Gentle lift of individual (or overall) facial features 2. Reduced wrinkles, creases, line or folds 3. Restoration of natural, curved facial contours 4. A more rested, energetic look 5. A friendlier smile

Skin Rejuvenation In some patients the goal of a non surgical Liquid Face Lift procedure is to lift the entire face. In others, the goal is to lift or contour specific facial features. For example, under eye bags and dark circles can be masked by using Liquid Facelift techniques; eyebrows can be lifted; jowls can be lifted and diminished; natural shape can be restored to flattened cheeks or temple areas; corners of the mouth can be lifted; and bumps on the nose can be hidden. Many of these conditions and contouring procedures can last up to 2-years or more. As Seen On Entertainment Tonight

AAn Extraordinary Weekend for Women The 2014 Extraordinary Women Conference will be February 28-March 1 at the Mabee Center.

By Sheryl Sowell

Ladies, mark your calendars now for the Extraordinary Women Conference, a weekend designed to help you draw closer to the heart of God and His amazing plan for your daily life. The conference will be held at the Mabee Center, February 28 through March 1, 2014. The Extraordinary Women Conference will be a wonderful weekend filled with music, praise and worship, entertainment and special guest speakers. Lonestar is celebrating their 20th year by reuniting with original lead singer

Richie McDonald, releasing a new album, and embarking on an anniversary tour, including a performance at the Extraordinary Women Conference in Tulsa. Known for merging their country roots with rich vocals, the band has achieved ten #1 country hits along with receiving the CMA Vocal Group of the Year award in 2001. For all their accomplishments, the biggest achievement of the band’s career has been witnessing the impact of Lonestar songs in the lives of others, according to lead singer Richie McDonald.

“Music is a very powerful tool and can help people going through both good and bad times,” he says. McDonald is proud that his band will be reaching fans at a special event like the Extraordinary Women Conference. “I want people to know that I am a country artist, but I was a Christian long before I was a country artist. It is rewarding to know that I can sing about my faith and maybe make a difference in somebody’s life.” Also performing at the EWomen conference, Michael O’Brien was the lead singer

Lonestar is set to perform at the 2014 Extraordinary Women Conference at the Mabee Center.

of the Christian band NewSong for seven years. Sensing that God was placing a strong call on his life to step out and minister as a solo artist, he resigned his position with the band and has now been serving in the music ministry on his own for 20 years. Michael has built a reputation as an incredibly gifted singer and songwriter with a heart for ministering to the body of Christ. Julie Clinton, president of Extraordinary Women, has spoken to hundreds of thousands of women as host of EWomen conferences all across America. A person of deep faith, she cares passionately about seeing women live out their dreams by finding their freedom in Christ. “We as women give of ourselves all day, every day – to our husbands, children, careers and households – but we rarely give back to ourselves. This conference is our way of giving back to women, offering them a weekend away to experience hope and healing through Jesus Christ,” says Julie. “Extraordinary Women shares with all women, regardless of their religious affiliation, the love, acceptance and completeness God has for us.”

“Our speakers will discuss issues related to women, many that aren’t necessarily talked about at church on Sunday morning, such as divorce, illness and disappointment,” says Julie. The theme of this year’s conference, “The Joyful Journey,” comes from Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” “Life is not always joyful,” says Julie, “but we must remember that the only true everlasting joy can be found through the Lord.” In addition to Julie, several other women will offer insightful and inspirational presentations at the conference, including Karen Kingsbury, Chonda Pierce, Carol Kent, Margaret Feinberg and Lisa Whelchel.

HHere’s the Thing about Trusts Trusts aren't strictly for the wealthy. By Terry Parsons

There’s a long-held perception that Trusts are strictly for the wealthy and sophisticated. And, the names of some Trusts (Domestic Self-Settled Spendthrift Trusts, Qualified Terminable Interest Property Trusts, Intentionally Defective Irrevocable Trusts, etc.) can make most of us want to cringe and run for cover. Largely due to misunderstanding and misperception, the subject has become so intimidating that many people avoid it. And that’s a shame, because Trusts really can be pretty simple and very effective. Let’s go over the basics: What is a Trust? A Trust is simply a legal arrangement that holds assets for the benefit of another. There are three parties to a Trust arrangement: The grantor: the person(s) who creates and funds the Trust.

The beneficiary: the person(s) who receives the benefits from the Trust (such as the income or the right to use the home, etc.). The trustee: The person(s) or entity who controls the Trust property, administers the Trust and has an absolute fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of the beneficiary. Why should you consider a Trust? For starters, a Trust can potentially… •minimize estate taxes, •shield assets from potential creditors, •avoid the expense and delays of probate, •preserve, protect and grow assets for your (minor) children until they are grown, •create a pool of investments that can be managed by professional money managers, •set up a fund for you should you become sick or disabled,

•shift part of your tax burden to people in lower tax brackets, •provide benefits for charity. What’s the other side of the coin? Here are a couple of things to consider: •There can be costs associated with setting up and maintaining a Trust (legal fees, trustee fees, etc.). •Depending on the type of Trust you choose, you may give up some control over the assets in the Trust. (This can be the case with many Irrevocable Trusts.) It sounds like a Trust pretty much covers everything, so is there even a need for a will? Personally, I recommend it, if for no other reason than most people neglect to transfer some or all of their property into their Trust. A properly constructed will, if nothing else, can pour over into the Trust at the time of your death any forgotten assets or

assets you obtained after the Trust was created. What to do next? Get with a professional! This isn’t a job for amateurs. Every situation is different. Tax laws – which can affect different types of Trusts in interesting ways – change on a regular basis. You want to make sure your advisors are totally up-to-speed on the regulations and that your situation is customized specifically to your needs.

Earns FFerris Recognition as Expert in Payments Industry RCB Bank ACH Analyst Kathleen Ferris earns AAP certification. By Jocelyn Wood

RCB Bank is proud to announce Kathleen Ferris, RCB Bank ACH Analyst, received her Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) certification and joined an elite group of highly skilled professionals across the nation that represents excellence in the electronic payments industry. AAP certification, provided through NACHA, The Electronic Payments Association, is a highly respected honor granted only to professionals who can prove a deep understanding of the rules and products of ACH operations. Currently, there are only around 4,000 AAPs in the nation. “I am extremely proud of Kathleen and her accomplishment of becoming a certified AAP,” said Daniel Marlin, RCB Bank VP of Operations and Ferris’ immediate supervisor. “She worked extremely

hard and her efforts have helped her to be successful.” Ferris currently monitors RCB Bank’s electronic money transfers and ACH activity (direct deposits and payments) to help protect the bank and its customers from fraudulent activity. RCB Bank is excited to have an AAP certified professional on staff with an extensive expertise in ACH operations who can help reduce risk for the company and its customers and ensure compliance with federal regulations. “It is a privilege to be a part of this small group of experts,” said Ferris. “I feel a great sense of responsibility. Because of the AAP, my coworkers come to me for the correct answers and I take that responsibility very seriously.” ACH, or the Automated Clearing House Network,

connects the nation’s financial institutions and processed 21 billion transactions in 2012. ACH processing drastically speeds up check processing by electronically processing checks and payments in batches instead of having to individually and physically handle each and every check or transaction. The ACH Network provides a safe, secure and reliable network for direct account-toaccount consumer, business and government payments and is considered the backbone for the electronic movement of money and data. NACHA, the Electronic Payments Association, manages the development, administration and governance of the ACH Network. NACHA represents more than 10,000 financial institutions. Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center will be packed with explosive dance and aerial stunts as “Bring It On: The Musical” presents its Oklahoma debut and an evening sprinkled with sass on February 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $60. Inspired by the 2000 film “Bring It On,” this new Broadway smash will take the audience on a high-flying journey through friendship, forgiveness and determination. It tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill and high stakes of competitive high school cheerleading. “What I would love the audience to come away with is that, whether you’re a 15year-old cheerleader or a 51year-old woman or an 87-yearold grandfather, you just saw yourself on stage, and that you have renewed excitement about what you do,” Broadway lyricist Amanda Green said. Uniting some of the freshest and funniest creative minds on Broadway, “Bring It On: The Musical” earned Tony® nominations for Best Musical and Best Choreography, and “The New York Times” called it "impossible to resist!" Closing out Broken

Arrow Performing Arts Center’s fifth anniversary is “Memphis” on April 22. From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tenn., “Memphis” is a winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical. It bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, “Memphis” is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. Both shows are suitable for ages 13 and up. Tickets are available at the BAPAC box office located at 701 S. Main St. in downtown Broken Arrow or by phone at 918-259-5778, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patrons can also visit the BAPAC Facebook page at facebook.com/brokenarrowpac for show updates and more.

Best Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures As we all know, a healthy diet and regular exercise is the key to feeling great and looking slim and trim. But some of us need a little more than that. It’s called stubborn fat for a reason; no matter how healthy you eat and how much you exercise, it can be virtually impossible to lose those persistent muffin tops, love handles and belly pooches. You’re left with two options: learn to live with it or have surgery, right? Wrong! BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center offers an innovative procedure for people who want to lose those stubborn bumps and bulges, without undergoing surgery or experiencing any downtime. CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical technology that targets and cools unwanted fat cells in a selected area to induce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat. Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, no anesthesia, no surgery and no downtime. Patients often spend time reading, working on their laptops or simply relaxing while undergoing this “lunchtime” treatment. “CoolSculpting is a 60-minute procedure, so you can do it on your lunch break, and you can return to work right after,” says Malissa Spacek, managing partner of BA Med Spa. “We’re very excited to be offering this incredible technology for our patients.” Developed by Harvard scientists, this procedure uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen – your healthy cells

remain healthy. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. CoolSculpting is safe, FDA-cleared and effective. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results seen after one to three months. Treatment areas may include the abdomen, upper abdomen, love handles, bra line, inner thighs and backs of thighs. “You can even treat multiple areas on the same visit,” adds Malissa. Of course we all want our bodies to look great, but we can’t forget about our faces! Another great treatment for those who don’t want to go “under the knife,” Ultherapy is a non- noninvasive procedure that uses ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing process to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin on the brow, neck, and under the chin. The only FDA-approved procedure to not only tighten but lift skin on these hard-to-treat areas, Ultherapy stimulates the deep structural support layers of the skin – including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift – without disturbing the surface of the skin. With Ultherapy, there’s no downtime; you can go about your day after a single, 60 to 90 minute in-office procedure. Results will unfold over the course of two to three months, and some patients have reported continued improvement for up to six months, including lifting and tightening of the skin on the neck, under the chin, along the jaw line, and on the brow.

retained several of our long-term employees,” said Mike, “many who have 20 to 30 years experience with Honda. This is permitting us to keep our quality at the top level as we operate at the industry’s highest standard.” As South Pointe Honda’s new service manager, he continually trains in the latest technology and information to better serve his customers. Mike Kayser grew up in Tulsa and always had a keen interest in cars. His father and grandfather owned car lots in the area, and Mike got his first car when he was 16. He performed all the maintenance work on it, giving him a great foundation for the position he holds today. After high school, Mike went to college in Tulsa and drove a Jeep Wrangler. His vehicle needed some work, so he worked part time as a porter at a Jeep BMW dealership. He was well liked and willing to fill in

wherever needed. He found that he liked working on the BMW side of the business, and quickly found himself racking vehicles and assisting service department technicians. “BMW was a small dealership with a very high-end environment and I liked it,” said Mike. Mike married his high school sweetheart and they have two children. He has also previously worked for VW Audi.

CCelebrating Success Goodwill Industries of Tulsa had a record-setting 2013.

By Duane Blankenship

For the past 87 years, Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has served area communities with dozens of programs and services, training facilities, 11 retail stores and 25 donation locations. The mission remains forever the same: to promote and make possible for every individual the dignity and self-sufficiency that comes with employment. The year 2013 was full of recordsetting achievements for Goodwill. Last year, Goodwill col-

lected, transported and processed over 21 million pounds of donations, resulting in a record volume for their retail stores. Monthly records in sales were set for every month except December when winter’s full force hit us. Following the damages incurred by the May 2011 tornado that devastated Joplin, Goodwill successfully opened a new store in February and maintained a permanent presence in Carthage.

The Goodwill Job Connection exceeded 600 job placements in 2013, and with additional placements from Goodwill training programs, the organization set a record for total placements in one year. The Goodwill Job Connection is staffed Monday through Friday at Goodwill’s main facility on Southwest Blvd. in Tulsa. Services are provided on a walk-in basis. The program provides computer access and staff mem-

bers who are trained to assist with developing resumes. These services are free of charge. Additionally, the Goodwill TulsaWORKS program provides training in computer, customer service, forklift and private security classes. All of Goodwill’s success over the past 87 years is, in large part, due to the generosity of citizens who make donations to the organization. “Our future successes rely on the continuing faithfulness of individual donors, businesses and caring groups,” said Store Manager Jaime Monroe. Now is a great time to clean out closets and donate to Goodwill. “New items arrive Monday through Friday each week, and new merchandise is displayed each day,” said Jaime. “We have a great election of active wear, and all sizes of children’s clothing and shoes are base priced at just $2.49.” Goodwill stores also carry accessory items, belts, shoes, purses and jewelry, all at unbelievable prices. Stores offer 25 percent off your entire purchase for senior shoppers 55 or older on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Customer Appreciation Day is featured once a month with a 25 percent discount on everyone’s total purchases. February 15 is the date scheduled for Goodwill’s Winter Half-Price Sale featuring all men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing at 50

Goodwill news and great ideas are also available on the new Good Thinkin’ Blog (www.goodwilltulsa.org/ goodthinkin). A new Goodwill Store at 3110 Southwest Blvd. is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in May 2014. Help yourself while helping others by shopping Goodwill. If you would like to be part of the Goodwill success story, consider joining one of Goodwill's retail teams. Goodwill is currently hiring full-time and part-time sales associates in a number of locations. A full range of benefits is available for fulltime employees. Opportunities for growth and advancement in a missioncentered retail program make Goodwill the perfect choice for building a career in retail sales. SSocial Security Disability Law: “It’s All We Do.” Social Security Law Center believes local representation is the best representation. Social Security Law Center, LLC, has been in business since 1990 and is one of the largest firms providing Social Security representation in the State of Oklahoma. They have successfully represented

thousands of clients and their total focus is on Social Security Disability Law. “It’s all we do,” said Teresa Grasso, Managing Attorney for the Tulsa Office. “We help our clients get disability

benefits.” According to Ms. Grasso, there are a lot of law firms requiring that the client has been denied disability before the firm will consider taking the case. Unlike other firms, Social Security Law Center prefers to be involved from the very beginning, before you’ve ever filed a claim. Social Security Law Center believes that local representation is the best representation and it should always be convenient for clients to visit with their attorney. That’s why the firm has offices in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Bartlesville and Miami. The company’s attorneys have over 40 years of combined experience and choose to keep case loads small to ensure that each client gets the attention they deserve. The Tulsa office serves the Tulsa Metropolitan Area and surrounding areas.

Teresa M. Grasso is the Managing Attorney in the Social Security Law Center in Tulsa.

OOutdoor Sporting Expo Mark your calendars for the big event at Claremore Expo Center February 28 through March 2.

By Cassie Woods

Lovers of all things outdoors are gearing up for the second annual Outdoor Sporting Expo to be held February 28 through March 2 at the Claremore Expo Center. Organizers expect this show to be of interest to enthusiasts of all ages and outdoor genres. “We are excited to see this show return to Claremore,” says Ron Burrows, Claremore Expo Center manager. “The Outdoor Sporting Expo is

really geared to Oklahomans who enjoy the many great outdoor activities and recreation opportunities that our region provides.” The Outdoor Sporting Expo will feature over 90,000 square feet of indoor exhibitor space. Exhibitors may apply now by contacting Claremore Main Street or Claremore Chamber of Commerce, or by visiting www.outdoorsportingexpo.com

Committee members (front row, L to R): Cary Jester, Sarah Sharp, Emily Mahan, Nikki Scalf, (back row) Cindy Bissett, Dell Davis, Brian Callender, Bryan Bradley, Ron Burrows and Brandon Irby.

. Exhibitors will have the option of booth or bulk space starting at $150. Spots will be open on a first-come, firstserve basis until full. “Our goal is to provide exhibitors and sponsors with very affordable space so that they can showcase their products and services,” said Burrows. “Attendees will see a variety of products and services that deal with anything outdoors.” “We are looking for any type of home-based, outdoor exhibitors,” said Cindy Bissett, Claremore Main Street director. “So far these include taxidermy, tying jigs and lures, duck calls, servicerelated guides, lodges, dog training and more. We even have an exhibitor from Canada coming in who chose this show over the Kansas City show.” The show will also include exhibitors of RVs and four-wheelers, rods and reels and a golf simulator. Additionally, the Corps of Engineers and GRDA will be on hand to talk about parks, boat safety and ecosystems. “We are also bringing back the archery competition,” said Davis. “Last year there was a huge line and it was a big hit, so this year we will have

TULSA

divisions for both adults and children.” Committee members have confirmed some great celebrities and seminars for the show. “We are excited that three of our celebrities are confirmed for demonstrations, shows and seminars,” said Bissett. “They include professional bass fisherman Tommy Biffle, world-renowned hunter Roger Raglin and famous alligator wrestler Jimmy Riffle.” Jimmy Riffle is from the popular Animal Planet series “Gator Boys.” He and his Road Show Crew will perform full gator shows, complete with alligators brought all the way from Florida, on Saturday and Sunday and meet with fans. “We got so many compliments on Jimmy last year that we knew we had to bring him back,” said Bissett. “People were lined up to meet him and get his autograph. He is one of the nicest celebrities we’ve ever worked with, and he is great with the kids.” Roger Raglin, known as America’s favorite white-tail deer hunter, is a hunting icon. He has traveled the world, produced over 70 full-length hunting videos, holds numerous world records, and has been inducted into the National Outdoor Hall of Fame. He also hosts “Roger Raglin’s Outdoors” exclusively on the Outdoor Channel. This will be Raglin’s first time to do a show in Oklahoma. Tommy Biffle, a wellknown professional bass fisherman, will serve as the

Page 29

show’s featured angler. Biffle has fished the pro-circuit and B.A.S.S. series for over 26 years, is a member of the B.A.S.S. Millionaires and has his own signature bait called “The Biffle Bug.” He also owns Lakeside Polaris in Wagoner. “A new group, Green Country Fly Fishers out of Bartlesville, will be on hand for demonstration and fly tying," said Davis. “The show will also feature special giveaways, door prizes, The Bass Tank and more.” This year’s Outdoor Sporting Expo is presented by Claremore Main Street, Claremore Chamber of Commerce and Claremore Expo Center. Show sponsors include GRDA, TTCU, Visit Claremore, Tulsa RV, Suburban Chevrolet and LCA Rising Stars. The Outdoor Sporting Expo will be open Friday, February 28, from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 per adult, $5 per child and senior, and free for kids 10 and under. Saturday morning, the first 100 kids will receive a free tackle pack from Rising Stars. Sunday is half price family day and all tickets will be discounted 50 percent. For more information, contact

Industry Veteran Sheri Miksa Named President and CEO of Mazzio’s LLC The Italian fast casual restaurant chain hires new executive leadership. By Sheryl Sowell

Tulsa-based Mazzio’s LLC, owner and operator of the Mazzio’s Italian Eatery and Oliveto Italian Bistro brands, has named Sheri Miksa, an industry veteran with over 25 years in the restaurant, foodservice and hospitality industries, as President and CEO effective Jan. 13. “We are thrilled to have attracted an experienced fast casual restaurant industry CEO like Sheri Miksa,” said Eric Selby, on behalf of Mazzio’s LLC’s ownership group. “We are certain Sheri’s strong industry background and experience, including her substantial time in the fast casual segment and with franchised organizations, will help us continue to build our brands in the growing casual Italian segments.” Mazzio’s origins began in 1961 with the Pizza Parlor, later known as Ken’s Pizza, founded by Ken Selby. Today the Mazzio’s corporation, parent to the Mazzio’s and Oliveto concepts, has grown to more than 140 locations, in 10 states. Most recently, Miksa was CEO of fast casual emerging concept Boneheads Grilled

Fish & Piri Piri Chicken. Miksa’s previous CEO roles include leading the 150-unit fast casual Rubio’s Restaurants chain (Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grills – then NASDAQ: RUBO), and the 140-unit Robeks Juice brand, a 99 percent franchised fast casual chain. At Robeks, the number of restaurants increased by 50 percent during her tenure. “I am excited about the future of Mazzio’s,” said Miksa. “Fast casual Italian is an under-served and growing segment. Mazzio’s has been serving craveable pizzas, pastas and hot Italian sandwiches for over 50 years. I look forward to leading the company and working with the great people at Mazzio’s to achieve the brands’ significant growth potential, and to bringing the Mazzio’s experience – quality, flavorful, Italian dishes served fast, in a warm, inviting environment – to more markets across the country.” Previously, Miksa held executive roles with AFC Enterprises’ Seattle Coffee Company, Taco Bell Corporation, and LSG Sky Chefs. She earned an MBA

from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Earlier in her career, she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Alaska. Mazzio's Italian Eatery's 140 locations offer expedited service and convenience, great value, and high quality menu items in a fast casual setting. The family-friendly menu features varieties of pizza, pasta, salad and sandwiches for lunch and dinner, making it a perfect choice for dine-in, carryout, delivery or catering needs. The Oliveto Italian Bistros, with locations in Oklahoma and Texas, provide artisan-inspired dishes in an upscale neighborhood dining concept. Open for lunch, dinner and later, the bistro menu board boasts appetizers, entrees, desserts and a wide variety of beers, wines and cocktails. For more information, contact

Modern Luxury in a Serene Country Setting M OK40 Ranch offers the best of both worlds for weddings and weekend retreats.

By Sheryl Sowell

One of the most challenging steps in planning a wedding is finding the perfect location, and for several years the Tulsa metro area has been limited to only a handful of places available for such an important event. That’s why Debbie Hunter, owner of Signature Interiors, had the idea to establish a beautiful new event center for weddings and other special occasions. “My initial plan was to open a bed

and breakfast when a friend asked me to host her wedding at the ranch. It was such a gorgeous ceremony, and working with so many brides at Signature over the years, I knew this was a niche that needed to be filled.” In addition to weddings and other large events such as church picnics, business retreats, retirement and graduation parties, OK40 Ranch offers romantic getaways for

two and relaxing weekends away for small groups of friends. “Whether your party is two people or 150, OK40 Ranch provides the ambiance of a charming B&B with the amenities of a luxurious upscale hotel,” says Debbie. The tranquil ranch offers 40 acres of walking and riding trails, horseback riding, two stocked ponds for fishing, and a bonfire pit. “We are in the middle of nowhere, and

that is exactly where we want to be. The stars are clear and bright, and the atmosphere is so peaceful,” says Debbie. “A weekend at OK40 Ranch would make a wonderful gift for your Valentine’s Day sweetheart.” The beautiful event center features vibrant, hip décor, a complete spa room with professional massage available, library, workout room, sauna, hot tub and media room. Overnight guests will enjoy luxury linens, roomdarkening shades, 42” plasma televisions, movies on demand and high-speed Internet. The Frank Lloyd Wright inspired design of the interior features 26-foot ceilings and solar energy windows which maximize the use of sunlight. “You truly get the best of both worlds – sophisticated, modern luxury in a serene country atmosphere,”

says Debbie. By May of this year, OK40 Ranch will have completed the reception hall that holds up to 400 guests. In the fall of 2014, the property will feature private cabins and teepees for additional overnight guests. OK40 Ranch is located less than 20 minutes south of Bixby. Call now to book your romantic weekend escape, weekend with the girls, or the perfect location for your dream wedding or other special event. Truly a design visionary, Debbie can also provide all-inclusive wedding consultation services. For more information, contact
