Dealership Renovated Inside and Out Helping Solve Oklahoma’s Obesity Crisis

Marc Miller Buick GMC employees are eagerly serving area residents at the recently renovated dealership in South Tulsa.

BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center hopes to decrease the rate of obesity in our state, one client at a time.

By Duane Blankenship Marc Miller Buick GMC has recently undergone a total renovation, inside and out. “We’ve always maintained a clean operation,” said Service Manager Gregg Walton, “and with the new face uplift, spirits are soaring.” Marc Miller Buick GMC has always utilized stateof-the-art service equipment, and the new look of the dealership genuinely complements Buick’s luxury car theme. When meeting with Walton and Service Director/Master Technician Gary Howell, you can’t help but feel their enthusiasm as they talk about the new facility, plus features and benefits of Buick GMC automobiles. Gregg and Gary each have 40 years of experience with Marc Miller Buick GMC. They both began working for the dealership when the company was owned by Marc’s father,

Ernie Miller. Gary says, “Ernie was born with a great work and service ethic, and to this day I frequently find myself saying, ‘What would Ernie do?’ Marc inherited that same work ethic, and he’s literally performed every job at every level within

the company.” If you ask around, you’ll find that most Marc Miller employees have worked there a long time. The company has high standards and requires frequent GM training for all of their ASE certified (continued on page 28)

By Lorrie Ward Helping Oklahomans stay at a healthy weight is a primary concern for Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center, even more so now that the Center for Disease Control has released a national health alert on obesity. “Oklahoma’s obesity rate is at 31.1 percent, up from 30.4 percent just last year. The national obesity rate is 35.7 percent. This is a very serious issue,” says Malissa. Malissa notes that the CDC indicates that if Oklahoma continues on this trajectory, it will be at over 66 percent obesity in 2030, putting it near the top of the list out of all the states in adult obesity rates. “We are facing a serious health crisis right in our state.” She also points out that in addition to the health risks of obesity, (continued on page 17)

Don’t Let Ugly Grout Embarrass You Grout Care of Tulsa eliminates moldy, cracked or dirty grout, just in time for your holiday guests. By Duane Blankenship

The holidays are nearly upon us. Is your kitchen and bathroom grout ready to face guests? Grout has a nasty habit of looking plain old ugly as it ages. But, there are remedies for making grout look like new again. Kent Kantor, owner of Grout Care of Tulsa, provides expert solutions for repairing and replacing unsightly grout surrounding ceramic tiles. According to Kent, “We want to save people money, make their grout look like new again, and extend the life of any home’s tiled areas. We repair or replace unsightly grout that is hard to clean or has recurring mold problems.” Kent is confident he can

improve the looks of the grout in your home if you’re willing to spend a little to save a lot. You can reach Kent by phone 24/7 to schedule a 15-minute, noobligation meeting where you will be supplied a quote. “We believe we’re within everyone’s budget,” said Kent, “and we know we can have your bathroom or kitchen looking great before guests start arriving for the holidays.” Grout Care has a solution for eliminating the problem of ugly, moldy, cracked or dirty grout. “Ceramic tile doesn’t wear out,” he says, “but grout certainly does.” That’s the beauty of the Grout Care solution. All the old grout is removed and replaced

with new. You have the option of making the grout the same color it originally was or elect to change to a lighter or darker color for an entirely new look. Grout Care of Tulsa provides four basic restoration options. They can clean the tile, remove and replace existing grout, stain the grout to any color of your choosing, and seal tile and grout areas to ensure carefree future maintenance. “Our color sealers will permanently seal your grout and make it cleanable,” said Kent. Kent offers the following advice about tile and grout. Mold likes to attack tiled areas, and as grout ages, it may become pitted. (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

Count Your Blessings BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

With both Thanksgiving and the presidential election this month, I was challenged with whether to write about gratefulness or the election. Then it occurred to me maybe I should write about being grateful that this election cycle is almost over. I know you will be as relieved as I am not to be bombarded with all the negativity and devisiveness, if nothing else! All kidding aside, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It doesn’t require scrambling around trying to get gifts or messing with lots of decorations. Its sole focus is gathering with friends and family just to eat and be together. It really creates a space that allows us to truly be grateful. We have a tradition in our family where every family member tells specifically all the things they have been grateful for over the last year as we go around the table. Since we don’t live close, it allows me to hear and understand what has been going on in their lives over the past year.

It occurs to me that with most everyone I deal with, we get caught up in the struggles and challenges of everyday life. And while we give thanks in our prayers each day, we should really spend more time focusing and concentrating on all of our blessings. The small, daily blessings that make our lives so much easier, the daily free and priceless gifts that our relationships bring are really what makes life worth living. After all, the more you focus your attention on the good, the more positive you attract. The tendency to focus on negativity in the markets,

disappointment with how you have managed your money, the lack of disciplined savings, what you wish your investments had done, and many other “if onlys”…abound. If you haven’t been satisfied with your current situation with your investments or your money, then stop focusing on what could have been and start doing something about it. If not, next year you will be sitting here thinking and feeling the same way. My dad used to tell me….If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you always got. It’s true. So, count your blessings each and every day. Make decisions to change things that aren’t working for you. Now, take the next step…. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. Holiday Giveaways Rock On

The Rock Church will continue its annual tradition of hosting several outreaches and giveaways during the holiday season. By Sheryl Sowell Theodore Roosevelt said, “Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.” Pastors Billy Joe and Theresa Watts of The Rock Church show their homage yearround with outreaches and giveaways, but even more so during the holiday season. “We love giving,” says Pastor Billy Joe Watts. “We just want to bless people. Our mission is to serve God and love people, and our giveaways are some of the ways that we do that. They’re some of our favorite things to do.” The Rock Church is a multi-racial, diverse church with a strong, active body of members. They meet at Union High School’s Performing Arts Center at 6636 S. Mingo. “The spirit of giving and generosity is alive at The Rock Church,” says Pastor Billy Joe. “We’ve had people join our church who were touched in some way by one of our outreaches.”

The Rock Church’s annual Touched by a Turkey Day, in its fourth year, will be held Saturday, November 17, the weekend before Thanksgiving. The Rock Church will again be

giving away turkeys to needy families. Touched by a Turkey will be at Union 8th Grade Center, located at 6501 S. Garnett, beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting as long as the turkeys do.

You must have a card to pick up a turkey. On Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 22, The Rock Church will hold its annual Starbucks Day, now in its fourth year. Rock Church members will be handing out a hundred $5 Starbucks gift cards at each of four Starbucks locations in the Tulsa area. On Sunday, December 16, The Rock Church will have their annual Christmas stocking giveaway for the children of Rock Church. The grand prize this year is a miniature motorcycle! The Rock Church’s children’s Christmas musical will be held that day as well. The children will perform a heartwarming play entitled “Aunt Maddy’s Christmas Rescue,” written by Glenn and Joyce Henry. The Rock Church has formed a partnership with the Tulsa Dream Center and Pastor Wendell Hope. Every fourth Friday of the month, The Rock Church leads the evening service there. “We have 350 members at our church,” says Pastor Watts. “Every year, the Tulsa Dream Center reaches about 30,000 people. Working with them is a wonderful opportunity to reach a much broader group of people. We’ve made a one-year commitment to support the Tulsa Dream Center financially, and we’ll be helping with their annual toy giveaway.” If you’re interested in the toy giveaway, contact the Tulsa Dream Center.

CCascia Christmas Walk

ARE YOU STILL USING DRUGSTORE READERS? Doing your own optometry at a drugstore and settling for a mass production reader is a little like using your shoe to drive in a nail. So many folks are optically crippled by using them, because they have one at several locations at their home or office. Still, they are never near them when needed. Or, they wind up sitting or stepping on them, because they are not CONSTANTLY ON THEIR FACE like complete RX eyewear. They don’t seem to figure the cost of losing and breaking them or that the safest place for any glasses is ON YOUR FACE.

The annual home tour and boutique will be Sunday, December 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. By Lee Taylor

Since they are mass produced, the optical center (point of lens where light passes un-deviated) width is not the same as the person’s personal pupillary distance measurement. This does not mean you will physically hurt your eyes with them, but it does mean that unwanted PRISM can be generated that causes eyestrain and possible double vision in the higher powers.

On Sunday, December 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Cascia Christmas Walk will feature all of the traditional things we love about the holiday season: festive home tours, delicious catered lunch at the Cascia Bistro, and the Cascia Christmas Boutique with over 60 local vendors. Four of Tulsa’s grandest homes in the midtown area will be beautifully decorated for a tour to kick off the Christmas season. Decorated by some of Tulsa’s most renowned designers and florists, each home will feature beautiful Christmas floral designs and decorations specific to the style of the home. All are decorated to celebrate Christmas in their own unique way: 2411 E. 34th St., decorated by The Design Shoppe; 2216 E. 30th St., Toni’s Flowers; 229 Woodward Blvd., Ted & Debbie’s Flowers and Garden; and 3222 S. Victor Ave., Toni’s Flowers. Each home, as well as the Scianna Performing Arts Center, will feature Cascia students performing traditional Christmas pieces on strings and pianos. Cascia Hall itself will be transformed into a holiday array of boutique shopping, dining and entertainment. Tickets are $15 in advance by visiting the website at www.casciahall.org, or at the Cascia Hall Upper School or Middles School offices located at 2520 S.

Also, one eye may demand more strength than the other eye. Then, there is no correction in these mass produced readers to correct for astigmatism. It may be possible that even your doctor recommended them due to budgetary concerns. In the lower powers they can suffice, but a custom made reader or half glass with your doctor’s RX is always the best and can be made to help with heavy computer screen or near use. Many of the folks who use drugstore readers are people who basically have pretty good distance vision. Still yet, some of these SAME folks complain they cannot see street signs at night clearly. What typically happens is that they are told to get drugstore readers to save cost. In doing that, the DOCTOR’S distance correction (albeit a mild correction) IS NEVER UTILIZED. Therefore the best acuity DISTANCE and NEAR is NEVER ACHIEVED!

SO WHAT IS THE BEST SOLUTION? Our solution to these problems is to obtain a current doctor’s RX (Ophthalmologist or Optometrist) and then bring this prescription to a competent Optician. We will carefully assist you in the frame selection so as to consider the prescription, optics, and ergonomic fit. We use two philosophies in styling: a. the minimalist look, which provides the lightest weight and nearly invisible look, or b. traditional plastics and metals with adornments for the ladies to produce that high fashion look. Our lenses of choice will be the Seiko Perfas Prestige II Digital with Surpass Anti Reflective Coat. We will Pre-Fit the frame, take exacting personal measurements and make absolutely sure these measurements exist in the final inspection of the eyewear. Your new eyewear will become part of you and your visual system and you will look, see and feel GREAT, just like so many of our fine customers over the last 18 years!

You’ll Have a “Dickens of a Time”

Claremore Main Street hosts the annual Victorian-style celebration in downtown Claremore November 16-17, 2012. By Carol Beck-Round Can you do the Vienna Waltz, the Virginia reel or the Shoddish? Maybe the Grand March or the Polka is more your style. However, it really doesn’t matter if you can dance because Claremore Main Street is kicking off the Christmas season with their annual Dickens on the Boulevard celebration with plenty of family-friendly fun for

everyone. Scheduled for November 16-17 in historic downtown Claremore, the event is a Victorian-themed holiday festival featuring stage entertainment, street dancing, a costume contest, food and more. The vintage festival will begin at 6 on both nights, when the downtown area is blocked off to traffic to allow all participants

Dressing up for Dickens on the Boulevard is enjoyed by everyone, including these young people, who participated in last year’s costume contest.

to stroll, dance or ride by wagon down the historic streets. Businesses, decorated for the holiday season, will host an open house during the free event. Shoppers can sign up for drawings to receive Dickens Dollars to spend at the participating merchants. “Last year, we gave away between $200 and $300 per night in drawings for Dickens Dollars, which are good at participating merchants,” says Cindy Bissett, Claremore Main Street’s executive director. “It’s a good time to get started on your Christmas shopping.” Visitors will be transported back to the Victorian era with live storefront window displays. Individuals, donned in their extravagantly designed gowns and frock coats, will pose in the windows like mannequins to engage people strolling down the historic sidewalks. For those who want to participate in the fun by wearing a Victorian costume, a contest will be held both nights to determine the Best Dressed. Winners will receive prizes in the following categories: man,

www.ValueNews.com woman, couple, young man, young woman, boy and girl. Onstage entertainment, beginning at 6 each night, will draw the crowd to the middle of the block, while children will enjoy having their photos snapped with Santa Claus for $3. The upper floors of five of Claremore’s historic buildings will come alive on both nights as “Tales from the Top” returns with a guided tour of the upper floors and a “slightly embellished story from Claremore’s past,” says Event Chair Nancy Fitts. “Participants will get to hear a story from a character that is closely associated with the building’s past as they portray their life in early-day Claremore.” This year a new Mystery Twist is being added to the tours. Participants will find a clue at each of the five buildings and can guess the answer to win a prize. A winner will be drawn if more than one entry is correct. Tour participants not only hear the actor’s story but are also allowed to explore on their own. “We don’t clean the upper floor,” says Bissett, “so if you have a dust problem or trouble climbing stairs, this might not be for you.” Due to time constraints, approximately 60 people per night can participate in the Tales from the Top, according to Bissett. Cost for the tours is $5 per person with advance reservations recommended. To make a reservation, call the Claremore Main Street office at (918) 341-5881. Tickets go on

sale November 5. At approximately 8:30 on both nights, those who want to cut loose to the sounds of the Victorian-era music can literally dance in the streets as Dr. Phil Sample, RSU professor, calls the dances, like the Virginia reel. “It’s neat to see the youth participate in such old-fashioned fun,” says Fitts. “It’s a fun, family event and people love it.” Dog Creek Outfitters will be on site with their historic chuck wagon serving up a meal of barbecue and beans, and Perry Dog Café will be on the street selling hot dogs with all the fixings. Kettle corn will also be available for purchase. Other planned activities include the Territorial Marshals Reenactment, a Living Nativity, and displays by period artisans like weavers, blacksmiths, carvers and silversmiths. Area authors will also be on hand signing copies of their books at Boardinghouse Books on the east end of Main Street. “We are also looking for volunteers to help with the event,” says Bissett, “including people to window sit or set up and clean up.” If you’re ready to boogie into the holiday season, put on your dancing shoes and head to Claremore Main Street for Dickens on the Boulevard.

FFresh Fall Foliage Lawns By Nature offers autumn colors and advice at an affordable price. By Stephanie Reed Though spring typically launches the landscaping frenzy, do not underestimate the importance of fall planting and preparation in maintaining the beauty and health of your flowerbeds and lawn. Lawns By Nature owner Andrew Martin encourages customers to take the time now to ensure a beautiful lawn in the

spring. “Autumn is the perfect time to make preparations that will ensure your lawn survives the winter and emerges beautifully in the spring.” Andrew has been landscaping yards since he was 12 years old. As a man who prides himself on a job well done, he has built a business

dedicated to customer satisfaction. “We are complete and thorough with all our jobs, and we welcome meticulous customers with high expectations. Our work is truly our best for of advertising.” Lawns By Nature has been in business since 1997 and specializes in residential and commercial landscape design and

management and tree services. With this dedication to excellence, it is no wonder that Lawns By Nature maintains an A+ score from the Better Business Bureau and customers quickly become repeat customers and friends. “We work hard to build a trust with our clients. Communication with them is our top priority,” says Andrew. “We don’t lose accounts. We make sure that once you’ve worked with us, you are 100 percent satisfied and want to continue using our services.” With winter blowing in Oklahoma-style snow and ice, protecting your home and yard from falling limbs is a must. Lawns By Nature not only offers tree trimming, pruning and removal, but they also tout advantages over other tree companies. “Because we’re a full landscape company that offers tree services, we are able to offer landscape maintenance with our proposal regarding tree work.” They also provide snow removal services. Lawns By Nature’s landscaping services include design, installation,

maintenance, soil cultivation, mulching, and the addition of seasonal flowers, flower pots and arrangements. They also offer commercial mowing services, leaf removal and debris hauling. Furthermore, they build retaining walls, boulderscapes, hardscapes, concrete sidewalks, porches and driveways, French drains, and perform sprinkler repair. Whether you need a company for a single job, several visits, or on a yearly contract, Lawns By Nature can meet your needs. “We work with homeowner and property owner associations, large and small apartments, and we love to work with churches,” says Andrew. While you evaluate your landscaping needs this autumn, don’t be deterred by the rumor that all landscaping companies have sky-high prices. “Give us a call. Don’t assume that because our services are so diversified that we’re not competitively priced. We’re eager to earn your business,” encourages Andrew. Go Treasure Hunting in the Heart of Tulsa Don’t miss the Holiday Open House at Mustard Seed Door Consignment on November 17 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

By Diana Clark & Derek Taylor

Welcome to a great adventure! Mustard Seed Door Consignment, the premier consignment shop in Oklahoma for furniture and home décor, offers you an opportunity to have fun and treasure hunt for bargains on unique furniture and home accessories where the merchandise changes every day. Mustard Seed Door consigns and sells furniture and accessories in just about every style – traditional, contemporary, French, antique, modern and transitional. Six years ago, Mustard Seed Door Consignment owners Diana Clark and her son John Clark were approached by a group of interior designers and decorators with the idea of opening a quality furniture consignment shop in Tulsa that offered impeccable integrity and service. Diana and John discovered there are many people who, for a variety of reasons, need a way to sell and buy gently-used, quality home furnishings. This need can be triggered by a move of some type, a desire to change your home décor, a marriage or divorce, or the purchase of a second home. Many people today

are downsizing, moving to assisted living, or setting up their first household and are looking for good quality furniture. Those who have been through the death of a loved one often need a dignified and respectful way to place furniture and décor into the hands of a new owner without having to deal with the time and hassle of selling it themselves. These are the type of people that welcome the tasteful surroundings and warm assistance that Mustard Seed Door is known for. Mustard Seed Door experiences a quick merchandise turnaround, which allows for the steady stream of new items arriving daily. Things sell so quickly that many customers regularly visit the store two or more times a week just to keep up with all of the new and exciting items the store receives. Many customers come in every Saturday from areas outside of Tulsa because they know there will be new things to see and experience. There are also a number of customers that come from as far away as Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Much of

the Mustard Seed Door’s business is referral or repeat customers who have learned that, if you see something you love, you better buy it the minute you see it because it will likely be sold by the time you return! At Mustard Seed Door, you can furnish and decorate a house or enhance any room – dining room, living room, bedroom, office, bath, kitchen, or sunroom. You can find a single accent furniture piece or make your house sparkle for the holidays with an original oil, a tribal rug, a designer floral, new lamps or a set of antique books. Perhaps custom drapes from a show home would look fabulous on your windows. You may also find a unique chandelier for a fraction of its original price. The Mustard Seed Door offers an amazing variety to choose from including home décor accessories like prints, clocks and mirrors. Mustard Seed Door is also involved in the local community and supports local causes with a special fondness for the Salvation Army and organizations that serve children and families. They are proud

Reputable Jeweler Expands to Broken Arrow Vincent Anthony Jewelers, a Tulsa staple for 12 years, is expanding operations to Broken Arrow at the beginning of November.

By Duane Blankenship Vincent Anthony Jewelers had its beginnings in Tulsa 12 years ago in a strip center at 101st and Yale. In 2002, Owner Lonnie Iannazzo moved Vincent Anthony to a free-standing building at 101st and South Sheridan. The company has enjoyed terrific growth and success in spite of challenging events and tough economic conditions. Vincent Anthony has always carried the highest quality products coupled with an undying dedication to customer service. Lonnie says, “I don’t know anyone, in any part of retail, that respects and treats customers better than Vincent Anthony Jewelers.” Servicing the entire metropolitan area from their Tulsa location, Lonnie has been asked many times by a loyal customer base in the Broken Arrow area when he would be expanding into Broken Arrow. A new Vincent Anthony Jewelers will be open for business in early November, just in time for your Christmas and holiday shopping. The store is located at 2601 N. Aspen, immediately south of the Broken Arrow Expressway and

across the street from McDonald’s. Vincent Anthony is a full-service jewelry store with selections ranging from bridal sets, loose diamonds, watches, pearls, rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and so much more. “Having a jeweler on staff to serve both Vincent Anthony

locations means your precious jewelry never leaves our company,” said Lonnie. Items brought in for repair will never need to be shipped out of town or out of state. Repair work might include something as simple as ring sizing or chain soldering all the way up to a creative, fully custom designed

piece. Have you ever tried to find a jeweler who replaces watch batteries? It can be difficult to find one. Vincent Anthony carries a full selection of watch batteries and does the replacement for you, generally while you wait. Andrea Candela, Angelique de Paris, Michelle Watches, Simon G, William Schraft, and a complete line from the Pandora Jewelry Collection are a few of the quality designer lines you will find at both Vincent Anthony locations. Michelle Watches combine beautiful diamonds and stainless steel with interchangeable straps so the ladies can always be color coordinated and in impeccable style anytime, day or evening, casual or formal. According to Lonnie, “Vincent Anthony is really excited about the LeVian designer line that is widely recognized for bringing the ‘Chocolate Diamond’ to market.” You can check out the website for Vincent Anthony Jewelers at www.vincentanthony.com for more information and a look at

the products you will find at both store locations. Be sure to watch for a grand opening announcement for the Broken Arrow store. Store manager for the new Broken Arrow location is Dave Pfeifer. Dave has had 27 years in the jewelry business, all in the Tulsa area. “I am really excited about this opportunity with Vincent Anthony and to be working with Lonnie again,” said Dave. Years ago, when Lonnie was a regional manager for a national jewelry company, he hired Dave to manage one of his stores. The staff of Vincent Anthony Jewelers in Broken Arrow also includes Sales Associates Laura Cunningham, Daniella Mercer and Audrey Thorp. Each of these knowledgeable associates has years of jewelry experience in the Tulsa area. Lonnie and the new staff of Vincent Anthony Jewelers in Broken Arrow hope you’ll stop by for a let’s-get-acquainted visit and then make it a habit to come in whenever shopping for yourself or looking for a unique gift for a special someone in your life. AA Concrete Solution LCI Concrete specializes in removing and replacing driveways, sidewalks, patios and flatwork.

By Joshua Danker-Dake “We pride ourselves on being fast and efficient, and on providing great quality at a great price,” says owner Kalan Paul. “Customers are amazed at how fast we can remove and replace their driveways, usually within two days or less!” Here’s what customers are saying: “They were fast, polite and cleaned up when they were done,” said A. Holmes. “I was

Damage to your driveway, whether in the form of cracking, pitting or flaking, is ugly and can reduce the curb appeal of your house substantially. LCI Concrete removes and replaces concrete driveways, sidewalks, and patios. At LCI Concrete, they place an emphasis on quality. They’ve been serving the Tulsa metro area since 2005.

amazed at the quality and turnaround time,” said Ben W. “I couldn’t be happier,” said Don L. These are just a few of the many customers that have received a new driveway or patio from LCI. They are loaded with references and ready to share them! There are certain ingredients to creating the strongest, most durable driveway

Kalan Paul, owner of LCI Concrete.

or patio. They include rebar (iron rods) on stands, 3500psi concrete, proper grading to force water away from your house, and an estimate with a total turnkey price including all materials and labor before they start. Another overlooked item in this industry is proper insurance. LCI Concrete carries general liability and workman’s comp for your protection. Kalan says, “Rebar can’t be emphasized enough,” and he’s not referring to wire mesh. “When talking about rebar, we’re referencing iron rods that are placed in the middle of the concrete. By doing this, you’re adding years onto your driveway’s life, and in Oklahoma, where the ground is constantly moving, having an iron base inside helps keep it all in place.” A question often asked is, “When is it too late to have concrete work done?” The answer may surprise you. Concrete can be poured anytime of the year. There are a few rules that must be present. The first one is you need four days in a row where the temperature will rise above 40 degrees. The second is, if the temperature will fall below freezing, it will likely

need to be covered or “blanketed” over night. Kalan’s team has over 30 years of combined experience. They use local reputable suppliers for all of their supplies and materials. One of the biggest things you can do to protect your driveway this winter is to not use salt, which can corrode and damage your driveway, causing it to pit and flake. Estimates from LCI Concrete are free, and they’ll give you the materials and costs of your job in writing before they start. “Our goals are to make our customers happy and to ensure the highest level of quality and service on every project,” Kalan says. They are a member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating and a member of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. Give them a call today for a free no obligation estimate on a project you’ve been meaning to do!

Helping Solve Oklahoma’s Obesity Crisis which has been linked to a whole host of diseases including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, Oklahoma’s obesity rates are costing a tremendous amount of money. “It’s not all about money – people are dying of these

these rates.” Even though these staggering numbers create a dim outlook, Malissa asserts that this report does not need to be a prophetic one. “It’s interesting to note that new studies show just a seven percent BMI (body mass index)

Malissa believes that bad habits are what created the obesity epidemic in the first place, an epidemic which spreads across the socioeconomic spectrum in our society and knows no cultural barriers. She points to several reasons for the

a more sedentary lifestyle, a love for fast food, and a fascination with technology. BA Med Spa’s weight loss protocol concentrates not only on HCG, which has proved to be a wonderful and helpful aid in the process, but also on replacing bad habits with

drinking lots of water. Malissa reports that as habits change, major transformations in health start to occur. She adds that a person’s diet accounts for 80 percent of weight loss, while exercise accounts for only 20 percent; therefore a healthy diet is critical for weight loss success. “As soon as people start to lose weight, their bodies start to function properly: their blood pressure regulates, their cholesterol goes down, and sometimes they are even able to get off medications for depression and other ailments,” she explains. “The body is going back to where it is supposed to be, and at a healthy weight that body is likely to last longer.” Malissa encourages everyone to visit the Center for Disease Control’s website (www.CDC.org) and review this information for themselves. “We need to wake up,” she says. “The great thing is though, this is something we can do something about.”

Are You Tired of the Weight? Dr. Luis Gorospe, a highly experienced bariatric surgeon who provides personalized, friendly care to each of his patients, offers free weekly seminars on weight loss surgery.

By Sheryl Sowell If you are morbidly obese and suffering from medical complications stemming from being overweight, surgery may be the right answer for you. With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who to see, and what surgery is right for you. To help answer these questions and determine if you are a proper candidate for weight loss surgery, Dr. Luis Gorospe, based out of Wagoner Community Hospital, offers free weekly seminars designed to address all of your questions and concerns. During the seminars, Dr. Gorospe explains the entire process from beginning to end and assists the small group of attendees in determining if they are qualified for surgery. To some people, for example, he may suggest lifestyle changes prior to, or even in place of, opting for surgery. For those who are qualified to undergo the operation, Dr. Gorospe offers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding, and gastric sleeve surgeries. He also performs conversion and

revision surgeries in cases that the initial operation does not result in the desired weight loss. According to Johnna Sue Blair, business development director for Wagoner Community Hospital, it is a combination of Dr. Gorospe’s experience, skill, personality, and individual attention to each patient that makes him a superior choice when selecting a bariatric surgeon. “Not only is Dr. Gorospe a board certified bariatric surgeon who has performed many successful weight loss surgeries, he also has an extraordinary bedside manner, which you don’t always see with surgeons. His patients absolutely love him, he is very friendly, and the first thing people notice about him is that he’s always smiling. You can tell he truly cares about his patients.” Dr. Gorospe has been performing weight loss surgeries for many years at hospitals throughout the Tulsa metro area. He began offering bariatric operations at Wagoner Community Hospital in August of this year. “Dr. Gorospe

prefers working in smaller community hospitals such as Wagoner because he is able to give patients more personal, one-on-one care,” said Johnna. “At larger hospitals, patients are in and out and can get lost in the crowd, but here Dr. Gorospe is able to give each of his patients the individual attention they want and need.” Since 2003, morbid obesity has been officially determined a disease in and of itself; therefore surgical treatment would be considered for patients who meet the definition for morbid obesity. Generally, the criteria for surgery is considered a patient who is between 80 and 100 pounds overweight (BMI of 40 or higher) who have associated medical conditions that are related to their obesity. “Your genetics, internal hormonal imbalance, learned eating behavior and subliminal stimulation, especially through the media, are just some of the factors that must take the blame for morbid obesity,” said Dr. Gorospe. Among his many

Luis V. Gorospe, MD, FACS. accomplishments, Dr. Gorospe was the first to perform laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass in Oklahoma and was the first doctor from Oklahoma to be a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. If you’re ready to change your life, call Dr. Gorospe’s office at (918) 252-2800 to learn

about his free weekly seminars on weight loss surgery.

AA Crafty Affair Tulsa Herb Society presents Carols and Crumpets on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tulsa Garden Center. By Stephanie Reed With the holiday season fast approaching, it is time for Tulsans to embrace the spirit of warmth and generosity. Tulsa Herb Society’s free holiday fair, Carols and Crumpets, is a festive start to what is sure to be a

fabulous season. Steeped in 22 years of tradition, what began as a formal English Tea has evolved into a festival featuring homemade crafts and foods. Boasting 25 vendors from a four-state area, the bazaar includes

countless homemade novelties and scrumptious treats. Members of Tulsa Herb Society gather once a week throughout the year in order to prepare crafts and food for this special occasion. Eve Joseph,

Tulsa Herb Society President Patsy Wynn and her two committee chairs, Eve Joseph (middle) and Lois Galpin (left), display goods for Carols and Crumpets.

In addition to the crafts for sale, the craft committee also creates by hand a woolen felt tree, ornament, and tree skirt as a much desired raffle prize. As one may expect from any great garden club, Tulsa Herb Society also sponsors a cut greenery booth. This booth features cut greenery to be used in holiday decorations. These freshly cut arrangements are not only beautiful but also holiday scent sensations. Other local vendors also have items for sale. Renowned artist Maggie Bonanomi will have wool art available for sale, and local herb vendor Jalene Riley of Utopia Gardens will also be on site selling herbs. “Some of our patrons have been coming since Carols and Crumpets was founded 22 years ago,” mentions Patsy Wynn, Tulsa Herb Society’s president. “There is just such a warm, family-friendly atmosphere; it is really a great way to kick off the holiday season.” Other vendors will be selling homemade chocolates, cement leaves, wooden trellises, soaps, pottery, potpourri, dolls and marionettes.

Crafts are not the only treat available. The Tulsa Herb Society also has a cooking crew. These chefs create delectable chutneys, vinegars and jellies; they will also have their third edition cookbook available for sale. Headed by Lois Galpin and Janice Partridge, the cooking committee is renowned for their use of savory herbs in their coveted delicacies. In case shoppers work up an appetite, the Snow Flake Café will be serving lunch, complete with a soup, sandwich, dessert and drink, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the only fundraiser that the Tulsa Herb Society sponsors, and its proceeds are used for a variety of things. Part of the proceeds goes back to the Tulsa Garden Center to be used for maintenance of the historical building and grounds. The Tulsa Herb Society uses the rest of the proceeds to sponsor trips for its members and host educational speakers for Tulsans. As the season rapidly approaches, mark your calendar for the Tulsa Herb Society’s annual fundraiser, Carols and Crumpets, on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Laser Tag Now Open at Andy B’s In addition to bowling, arcade games and go-karts, Andy B’s Family Entertainment Center has a new laser tag arena.

By Sheryl Sowell Andy B’s Family Entertainment Center truly lives up to its name. Bowling, a 4000-square-foot video arcade area, and a go-kart track provide fun and excitement for every age. Now even more thrills can be found at Andy B’s with their brand-new laser tag arena! According to Saul Scribner, game room manager, Andy B’s laser tag has been a huge hit since it opened in September. “The first day we had a group of 30 come in as soon as we opened! We’re so excited to offer laser tag at Andy B’s as it gives our guests an additional opportunity to have even more fun.” Andy B’s moved the pro shop and removed a few bowling lanes to open the space for renovation. “They did an amazing job in designing it – it’s a really great use of the space,” says Saul. Laser tag players must be at least seven years old and 42 inches in height. Two games are available: solo, in which every player is against each other, and team play. Players are suited up with vests and carry around their attached “phasers,” used to “tag” or “deactivate” other players and destroy the other team’s base. Black lights, fog and intense techno music create an environment

minute game. Approximately 15 people can play at a time. The games are first come, first served. Laser tag hours are Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 4 p.m. to close, and

Monday thru Friday 8 am to 5:30 pm Saturday 8 am to 1 pm

Saturday and Sunday from noon to close. You can also make reservations for a private laser tag party for birthdays, corporate team building and other group events. A laser tag group package includes two laser tag games, two pizzas, two pitchers of soda, use of the party room for two hours, and game cards for the arcade. In addition to the awesome new laser tag arena, Andy B’s offers traditional bowling as well as VIB (Very Important Bowler) lanes in a private bowling suite complete with comfy couches and 100-foot screens playing music videos. “It’s a very upscale bowling experience,” explains manager Sharon Mooney. The go-kart track is not your typical oval track. “The track has twists and turns, and is much more engaging than a lot of other go-kart tracks,” says Saul. Two sizes of go-karts are available: a larger one for ages 10 and up who are at least 54 inches tall, and a smaller one that doesn’t go as fast for ages 5 to 9 who are at least 40 inches tall. “Doubleseaters are also available, for a parent and child to ride together,” adds Saul. For those who enjoy the sounds, sights and excitement of

an arcade, Andy B’s offers 45 swipe card games that include driving, shooting and dancing video games. There’s something for everyone, from ages three to adult. A redemption center tops off the fun. “Customers thank me for the carnival atmosphere without the carnival rip-off. People really do win great prizes,” says Saul. Dealership Renovated Inside and Out technicians. “Conventional engines waste a lot of fuel when the vehicle is stopped and idling, like at a red light,” said Gary. The Buick LaCrosse, with eAssist technology, solves the problem by switching the engine into auto stop. It stops the engine’s idling and goes from gas to electric power. “As soon as your foot lifts off the brake pedal, eAssist seamlessly switches back to gasoline engine power,” he stated. eAssist integrates a powerful but compact electric motor, an advanced

lithium-ion battery, and the vehicle’s already efficient direct-injected ECOTEC engine. As you coast or brake the vehicle, eAssist captures and stores energy in the lithium-ion battery. “Unlike hybrids, Buick’s system never goes on full battery power,” said Gregg. The Buick LaCrosse is advertised as the most fuelefficient sedan in its class. If shopping for an SUV, crossover, or truck, Marc Miller Buick GMC has a nice arsenal that will quickly put a permanent grin on your face. The GM LS

family of V8’s are of deep skirt block construction, higher nickelcontent cast iron, external oil pump, the crank main journals and connecting rods. “It is an extremely rugged and durable engine,” said Gary, “and some of the highly desirable design characteristics of the GM LS family are found in other GM-designed engines used in vehicles ranging from sport coupes to full size trucks.” “Buick GMC is building some of the highest quality vehicles on the road today,” said

Don’t Let Ugly Grout Embarrass You Mold finds the pits and begins to grow. You cannot wash it away, and continued scrubbing only seems to aggravate the problem. Grout Care of Tulsa’s solution is to remove the damaged grout and replace it. If you’ve ever tried bleaching the grout in a shower or other problem area, don’t do it again; it won’t solve the problem. And if you’re constantly fighting soap scum or stains and the grout has turned a different color, Kent believes Grout Care has a solution to revitalize the area. A customer satisfaction guarantee is included with each completed project. If you’re thinking about selling your home, or if you’re just getting tired of all that scrubbing, call Grout Care of Tulsa. The kitchen and bathroom are often the difference between making and breaking a home sale, and it’s often because of tired,

ugly grout. “We have a cure for moldy, missing, dirty or cracked grout,” says Kent, “and we’d love to help make your kitchen and bathroom more appealing.” “Our ultimate goal is to provide great customer service,” said Kent. “Our employees are clean and neat on the job and take pride in their work. We’re still doing just one thing. And we still do it right!” Call Kent at Grout Care of Tulsa before your guests arrive for the holidays. And it is critical that you burn only top-tier fuel in your Buick GMC vehicle. Consistency and Success Martial Arts Academy emphasizes consistency for achieving success, including pursuing a black belt.

By Lorrie Ward Chris Velez of Martial Arts Academy is a big believer in consistency: “Consistency is what will get you the black belt,” he says. Velez also believes in living by example – and that is

and tangible results. “One of our objectives was to create more than just a good fighter,” says Velez, who explains that concentrating only on defense sells the whole process

In order to achieve this, Velez and staff continued to observe both the successes and failures of other martial arts schools in order to educate themselves. From the time they

(Front row, L to R): Rick Gibson, Brianne Saul, Taylor Carrell, Stephen Davis, Chris Velez and Jonathan Davis, (Back row, L to R): Eric Buckendorf, Michael Randal, Robert Baker and Keith Davis. why it is no surprise that his consistency in pursuing the goals he set when establishing Martial Arts Academy in Owasso nine years ago have paid off in visible

very short. “We wanted to deliver the promises we made to the student, both with the black belt and the attributes it takes to achieve the black belt.”

held their first class in Owasso Fitness Zone on October 3, 2003 through 2005, they traveled and evaluated both the business and instruction side of

www.ValueNews.com other academies in order to know what practices they could best incorporate and what traditions should be left in the past. They were then ready to proceed toward their own visions when they moved into their permanent Owasso location in 2005. “Everything we do comes from a position of experience,” says Velez, “but not tradition for tradition’s sake.” One thing Velez and his staff took special notice of was the percentages of those who weren’t making it to black belt, and they looked for ways to lower this percentage. They found, for instance, that “catering to families at the speed of life” was of key importance and so began offering longer classes with fewer sessions per week, as opposed to short but frequent sessions, which can be more difficult to fit into a busy family’s schedule. Another change involved adultto-child ratio in classes. These groups had typically been separated; however, Velez found that placing adults and children in classes together encouraged the adult students to provide much needed examples of maturity for the children. Beginning his own martial arts training at an early age, he still recalls the impact of his own instructors’ words, mannerisms, and ways of speaking – and these good examples have guided what has been put into the curriculum. Through the years, Velez had also observed that martial arts classes were often geared toward people who were obviously athletically gifted. He

believes that even those who do not show athletic aptitude in the beginning are capable of success with hard work, encouragement and consistency, so he and his staff gear their teaching styles toward a deeper learning experience, one that extends beyond competition and into personal growth. Velez has seen tremendous results from the practices he and his staff have put into place. “People who didn’t think they were athletes in the beginning are often actually quite good, and our high ranking group is very technically sound,” he says. “It is not uncommon for our academy to have two or three lines of black belts.” Through fulfilling these goals, Mr. Velez has been able to make reality another vision: providing opportunities for those who would like to instruct in the martial arts. In March of 2012, he opened a second Martial Arts Academy location, in Tulsa, with his longtime colleague Richard Gibson acting as chief instructor. “Expanding and opening up these opportunities has always been part of the plan,” Velez says. “We are happy to see this come to fruition.” For more information, contact

AA Time for Family Check out The Hamlet for your family’s Thanksgiving turkeys, hams and other delicious delights. By Stephanie Reed Shannon Hester, owner of The Hamlet, knows all about the importance of family around the holidays. As a small business owner, she depends on the help of her family to maintain the quality and spirit of the deli. “I couldn’t do it without them. I depend on my family’s support,” Shannon says, and they have made support a standard practice. After Shannon’s father, Gordon Pendergraft, sold The Hamlet in 2003, Shannon was eager to bring the eatery back to the family. Under her ownership, The Hamlet has thrived and evolved. Boasting new gourmet dips, meal starters, and desserts, The Hamlet is no longer relegated to the award-winning honey-kissed hams and smoked meats. They are now offering made-to-order gift baskets that serve as perfect hostess and corporate gifts. Customers can choose from an assortment of Oklahoma-made products and delicacies, or they can ask the friendly staff for recommendations or themed ideas. Can’t pick the gift basket up? Not to worry. The Hamlet ships meats and gift baskets, and they also make deliveries in the

salads and sandwiches. If you can’t make it into the deli, lunch boxes are also available for individuals or corporate meetings. As Thanksgiving approaches, Shannon encourages customers to preorder turkeys and hams. Customers can either call to place an order, or they can order online. “You won’t get a better ham or turkey. We have gone through and inspected each one. They are delicious,” Shannon encourages. Whether you are serving a small family or a family of 36, The Hamlet has plenty of options to meet your needs. They offer hams ranging from 6 to 18 lbs, and turkeys that range from 10 to 14 lbs. With all of her clan’s support, Shannon hopes to pay it forward. “The holidays are all about spending time with family. Let us worry about the preparations. Our meats are so convenient and delicious.” They are precooked and require no preparation – just take it home and serve it. In the upcoming year, look for The Hamlet’s new facelift. Complete with outdoor seating and a fireplace, The Hamlet’s new look will bring the gourmet flavor into the décor as well as the food.

Tom Phillips is able to ride his Harley and enjoy life again after a knee replacement from Dr. LaButti.

By Joshua Danker-Dake Tom Phillips, 55, of Hominy worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections for over 22 years. “I weigh over 300 pounds, and when I retired, I had over 22 years on my feet. My knee was worn out because I was heavy and because I was standing and walking on concrete for so long,” he says. “I had very little cartilage left in my right knee, and I was in pain every time I tried to walk.” Tom paid several visits to an orthopedist. His visits there included X-rays and an MRI, and he had two injections in his right knee, he says. “The first injection reduced the pain for about two months, but the second shot did not help at all.” Tom then visited Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I told him I was ready for surgery,” Mike said. “I had the surgery on August 11, 2011, and after two days in the hospital, I was sent home. Dr. LaButti’s office arranged for home health to visit and determine my needs. A nurse visited and helped me set up my physical therapy, and the physical therapist visited my home three days a week for about five weeks.”

The surgery and the rehabilitation program were successful, Tom says. “My wound healed very quickly, and within a couple of weeks, the strength in my right leg began to return. I’ve had no problems since the surgery; I recently had my one-year check-up with Dr. LaButti, and everything is looking good.” Now rid of debilitating knee pain, Tom is free to pursue his interests in his retirement. “I recently purchased a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and I plan on seeing some new places in the next few years,” he says. “And I would highly recommend Dr. LaButti to anyone with a knee problem.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. iBlock®

Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti 4700 South Memorial - Tulsa • 918-663-4700 • 800-636-4006 www.MarcMillerBuickGMC.com

This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.
