Our great state has an extraordinary history, with many a tale to be told about the characters of bygone days. Oklahoma is such a great place to live that some have refused to leave! Some of these spirits invite you to come and find them but ask that visitors always be respectful and make sure to abide by each location’s rules and hours of business. There is much to learn from the ghosts of Oklahoma’s past.

The Stone Lion Inn – Guthrie The Houghton Family’s beautiful and elegant home was completed in 1907. At the time, it was the grandest house in town. Shortly after they moved in, their seven-year-old daughter, Irene, contracted whooping cough and was accidentally overdosed with medicine by the maid. Her passing was heartwrenching for the family. In the 1920s, the family fell on hard times, and they moved to Enid to run a mercantile. In order to retain their Guthrie home, they leased it to a mortuary, and Smith Funeral Home operated on the premises for eight years. In 1986, Becky Luker purchased the home as only the third owner in its history and moved in with her children. It was not long after that her seven-year-old son began telling of strange occurrences in his bedroom closet, with toys being rearranged and even a sighting of a little girl sitting on the floor. He talked about “the ghost girl” often. Now, the home is a bed and breakfast that guests can stay in overnight, with stunning 4

bedroom suites and the warmest hospitality. Becky hosts murder mystery dinners on the weekends, with one of her guests playing the theatrical victim each event night. She writes all of the stories herself; some garnered with inspiration from local lore. Multiple paranormal groups have investigated the home, including national television shows, such as Ghost Hunters. Overnight guests have reported an array of experiences from their stays, including being woken from slumber to a child tapping them on the cheek, and their toes being played with. Phantom footsteps and smells have been experienced, as well as shirts being tugged on with no culprit to be found. Stately and elegant rooms will provide some comfort, despite the sounds and possible encounters with the spirits inside. Guests at the inn have experienced many mysterious things, mostly unexplained mischief.

Cain’s Ballroom - Tulsa This iconic spot has been a cultural hub in the city since the 1930s. Originally built as a garage in 1924, the building was purchased in 1930 by Madison W. “Daddy” Cain, and was named Cain’s Dance Academy. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys’ first radio broadcasts on KVOO took place here, and they performed regularly at the venue between 1934-1942. In 1976, the building was purchased with a renewed interest in revitalizing the building as a concert venue, and Cain’s Ballroom was born. The Dance Academy was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Bob Wills passed away in 1973, but some people believe he loved Cain’s so much that he still frequents the old dance hall. Manager Brad Harris makes sure to say, “Goodnight, Bob!” every night before he leaves. Brad has experienced some things that have made him believe something or someone is lingering in the building. One day, a delivery of beer was made, and the cases were neatly stacked near the bar. Brad walked away briefly, and when he returned, the cases were placed down on the floor on their sides, no longer stacked. There was no sound. He has seen apparitions out of the corners of his eyes, and has heard crowds of people talking when no one is left in the building after a show. Numerous paranormal research groups have done investigations in the building, and Brad recalled that one group captured and audio recording of a young girl that said, “I want to help.” No one knows for sure who is haunting the building, but many people have experiences that validate that there are “others” in the building. Presently, Cain’s is not hosting regular shows, but are having smaller concerts with limited seating and free online streaming series. Military History Museum â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Broken Arrow In 1942, Dr. Onis Franklin, and his son, Dr. S.E. Franklin, established the first modern hospital in the town at 112 North Main. The hospital served the community until the late 1960s and ultimately ended up in the hands of the City of Broken Arrow. The Military History Center was opened in 2013, and the collection has grown exponentially. Docent Supervisor, Dennis Hoch, has a few spooky stories to share, including a bone-chilling experience with a mannequin in the museum. He recalls the day he was working near the uniform display, where the mannequinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head was facing toward the wall. Dennis looked down, and when he looked back up again, the head was turned towards him, as if watching him work. On another occasion, he and another docent were speaking to each other in the front of the museum. The back door opened, which normally is kept

locked. Dennis and the docent, curious about who had entered, walked down the hall to investigate. Midway down the hall, they saw a figure cross in front of them into one of the galleries. They followed, only to find that there was no one there. Sounds and rattling can be heard frequently from the basement, which used to house the morgue in the old hospital. Crooked pictures on the walls cause frustration for staff, who constantly must straighten them. A light in the basement cannot be turned off, despite all efforts, including cutting power. The collection of artifacts in the museum is exceptional, with hundreds of items from all eras of military history. Are there spirits attached to the relics in the displays, or are there lingering souls from the old hospital? Visit them anytime, Tuesday-Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm, and see for yourself. The Thomas- Foreman Home was built in 1898. Judge Thomas’s rocking chair – multiple witnesses have seen the chair rock on its own, with nobody near it. It was in this room that Judge Thomas’s body was laid in state for his funeral. A picture flew from the wall into the middle of the floor, as witnessed by historian Roger Bell.

In this room, many mysterious occurrences have taken place, including the phantom rocking chair and an apparitions reflection in the bookcases.

Thomas-Foreman Home - Muskogee A truly notable and remarkable exhibition can be found in this historic city, with a foundation built in the days before statehood, when there was nothing but open prairie as far as the eye could see. Judge John R. Thomas built his humble farmhouse-style home in 1898. He was a federal judge in the wild west of Indian territory and is recognized as the father of the American Navy. His daughter, Carolyn, married Dr. Grant Foreman in 1905, and together, they lived with the Judge until his death in 1914. Judge Thomas was shot and killed during a prison riot at McAlister, and his body was brought back to the home to lie in state for his funeral. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The Foremans were authors, historians, and scholars who traveled the world and acquired an assortment of art, souvenirs, and photographs throughout their travels. An immense library of books was also amassed over the years. In the life of the home, only the ThomasForeman families ever resided there, and their incredible, eclectic collection is like a time capsule, with artifacts spanning decades of history. Dr. Grant Foreman passed away in the home in 1953, and Carolyn died in her bed in 1967 at the age of 95. They had no children. Roger Bell, a local historian, is passionate about preserving the history of the location and the spirits he believes still linger there. The

haunting of the home is well known by locals, and many paranormal studies have been conducted onsite. One day, Roger and a visitor were touring the home, when they heard a loud noise in another room. A picture that had been hanging on the wall earlier had flown across the room and landed in the middle of the floor. Residual aromas of tobacco and perfume have been experienced on multiple occasions, and there have been claims from witnesses that Judge Thomas’s rocking chair will move on its own. His picture hangs just above over a large bookshelf, and his piercing eyes seem to follow visitors around the room. Judge Thomas had an old leg injury from the civil war that disabled him, and he possessed a large collection of canes. There are claims that some have heard the thud of a cane moving across the wooden floors. Once, a volunteer was facing the bookshelves that are covered with a clear acrylic casing. She noticed the reflection of a woman wearing a white dress behind her, and when she turned to speak to the woman, there was no one there. A trip to the Thomas-Foreman house is an extraordinary experience with something most everyone will enjoy and learn from, especially for those interested in ghosts. What is Kyphoplasty?

How does Kyphoplasty help?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that quickly repairs vertebral compression fractures (VCF) and restores structural integrity to broken vertebral bone. Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that uses a cavity creation device (usually a balloon) to create a space in the broken vertebra which is then filled with a special bone cement to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain.

Owasso’s Oktoberf Honors First Respo

The one-day event begins at 3 p.m. on October 24, 2020, and will take place in Owasso’s Redbud District. Street closures will begin at 12 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Main Street (76th St. N.) to North 1st St. There will be a variety of German food vendors, at least six more local breweries and plenty of Oktoberfest themed music. Live music starts at 2 p.m. Local musical favorites, Trent Charles and Jack Waters will be

performing, along with some very ‘special’ surprise guests, and polka bands. Games will include cornhole, axe throwing and more. It’s planned to entertain the entire family and entry is free. Special thanks to Classic Chevrolet for being the main sponsor of this fundraising celebration. This is a new city-sanctioned event and the brainchild of Donnie Eldridge, owner of Emersumnice Brewery, located at 102 S. Main St. in Owasso. Disappointed that Tulsa’s big event was canceled, he decided to do this event because the only time he had ever missed a chicken dance was when he was deployed. What better way to partake in some great fall festivities and support those who serve the

public. Donnie said that most of the first responder groups that will be benefitting are Owasso Police and Fire, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Tulsa’s Sheriff ’s department, and Quad-A (Army Aviation Association of America). “Owasso is such a great community. I believe they will get behind this celebration and support our first responders,” Donnie stated. As Oklahoma Quad-A vice president of programs, Donnie said they raise money for scholarships, gaps, and shortfalls for military families and veterans. “We keep 95% of the funds we raise in house to help unmarried dependents – which include children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – with scholarships; funds are also used to help soldier’s families when extra money is needed.” Commemorative tee shirts and mugs will be sold with 100% of the proceeds donated to the charities. A ‘ticket system’ will be used as currency, and no cash will be exchanged with the vendors. People who wish to drink alcohol will have their I.D. checked and given a wrist band. 16 oz. beer steins with the first fill will be sold for $20.00. Some of the

Blueberry Hand Pies Makes 8 - When I was in high school economics class, we spent two days making fried pies. At that time, I thought fried pies only came in little packages at the convenient store. I had no idea you could actually make them yourself. Although I love nearly everything fried, I prefer my hand pies baked with course sugar on top. Blueberry hand pies are probably my favorite dessert of the summer, especially when blueberries are ripe and sweet at the farmers market. They take a bit of effort, but once they come out of the oven, oozing with blue syrup you’ll know it was worth every minute. Be sure to practice patience, and let the pies cool completely before you serve them. Pastry: • 3 cups all purpose flour • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 tablespoon sugar • 2 sticks butter (8 ounces), cold and cut into 1/4” cubes 32 |

• 1/2 cup cold water Filling: • 3 cups fresh blueberries • 2/3 cup sugar • Zest of one orange • Zest of 1/2 lemon • Pinch kosher salt • Juice of one orange • 1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch Topping: • 1 egg • 3 tablespoons course decorating sugar Prepare the pastry: In the bowl of a food processor, add the flour, salt, sugar, and butter. Pulse 20-25 times, until mixture is blended and resembles cornmeal. Slowly add the cold water while pulsing the food processor until the dough comes together. It’s important you do not over mix. Pour out dough onto a board and form into a ball. Divide the dough

into 16 balls, approximately 1.75 ounces each. Place on a plate and cover with a towel. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Meanwhile, prepare the filling. In a medium saucepan, add the blueberries, sugar, orange zest, lemon zest, and salt. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. In a small bowl, combine the orange juice and cornstarch until the cornstarch has completely dissolved. Add to the blueberry mixture, and continue simmering for ten minutes. Pour the mixture into a bowl and let cool completely. (Filling can be prepared the day before you assemble the hand pies.) To assemble hand pies, roll each dough ball out on a floured board until they are 5” circles. Spoon 1/4 cup of filling onto the center of 8 circles, then top each with another circle of dough. Press the edges with the tip of a fork to seal. Using a knife, cut three slits into the top of each pie to allow steam to

She told me that I can’t change the behavior of other people and the way they treat me, but I can choose friends who are kind and treat others like they want to be treated. Miss Ruff had a powerful influence on the way I choose my friends today. When I was in 9th grade, I met the woman who changed my life forever. Miss Craig was my home economics teacher, and I wanted to be just like her. She was confident, funny, and smart. She taught us how to sew, cook, plan a wedding, and many other skills. In 10th grade, she taught us how to make fried hand pies. I thought fried pies only came in packages called Hostess Fried Pies, which I was allowed to have on special occasions. I had no idea you could actually make them at home. Miss Craig was my home economics teacher for four years, and I use the skills I learned from her every day of my life. The best teacher I ever had was my mother. Although I went to a public school, my mother taught me lessons every single day. She didn’t teach me

reading, writing, and arithmetic. She taught me to be compassionate for the elderly when we baked cookies and took them to the nursing home. She taught me to keep my room clean because I should respect my belongings and take care of them. She taught me to work hard and to finish a job if I expected to be rewarded. If my chores weren’t done, I didn’t get my weekly allowance. She taught me to love other people, even if they didn’t love me back. When I was in my 30s, I became a cooking teacher, teaching kids in a low-income apartment complex. The joy I saw on those kids’ faces when they learned to cook was a huge reward for the efforts I made to teach them what I knew. Years later, I’ve heard from several of those kids who now love to cook because of the lessons I taught them. If you’ve known a teacher who had a positive impact on your life or the life of your child, I encourage you to reach out to him or her. I wrote a letter to Miss Craig several years ago and told her how much she had impacted my life. Her reply was that she hadn’t heard from one single student over the 30 years she had taught. She said she had read my letter while sitting next to her husband in a hospital bed, and it lifted her spirits more than anything else that day. I also told her that I’ve never eaten a fried pie without thinking of her. I’ve created my own version of those fried pies, except I bake them instead of frying. I hope you’ll make them yourself, and if there’s one left over, take it to your favorite teacher.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Helpful Information and Resources BY CHRIS PUTMAN

busy wife and mother jumps into the shower one busy Monday morning to get ready to drop off the kids at school and rush off to work. There are a million things on her mind, and she is mentally running down her to-do list as she lathers up. As she begins to wash off, she feels it. She freezes. Her blood runs cold. It’s a lump. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the campaign was created to educate women about the need for early detection. What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Most of those women will never uncover what caused the cancer, only the certainty that the cell’s DNA was damaged. One thing that women can know for sure is what risk factors can contribute to the disease. One is drinking alcohol. That’s an easy one to cure, just don’t drink. Risk factors a woman can’t or may not be able to change is increasing age, early menstruation, late menopause, a first pregnancy after age 30, no pregnancies at all, or a family history of breast cancer. Those risk factors

don’t necessarily mean that a woman is doomed to get the disease; it is only an increased risk. That’s good news. More good news is that well over half of all breast cancer cases are caught while the tumor is still localized. The survival rate of a localized cancer five years out is nearly 100 percent. There are two types of breast tumors. One is benign and won’t need treatment or removal unless it continues to grow, crowding into other organs or causing pain. The other type is malignant tumors, which need a biopsy to determine its aggressiveness. Tumors are graded on a scale of one to three. The rating is determined by the severity of the mutation of the cell and how rapidly it divides. So, what can women do to fend off the disease? • Eat a low-fat diet. Eating fruits and vegetables helps reduce the risk of cancer because high fat can cause estrogen to develop and feeds cancer cells. • Walk 30 minutes per day. Women can boost their immune system through exercise. • Give up alcohol. Research shows that as little as one drink per day can

increase the risk. • Take a break from oral contraceptives after five years of continual use. Taking hormones in an ongoing manner can increase the risk. Death caused by breast cancer has declined 40 percent since the late 80s because of early detection. What form of detection should a woman use? There are some choices a woman can make depending on where she is on the detection journey. • Mammograms, which are an x-ray of the breast. • If a lump is found in a mammogram, the next step is an ultrasound. Doctors use sound waves to uncover if the breast lump is full of liquid or if it is a mass. • An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, can help a doctor to determine if the lump is normal or abnormal tissue helping to gain a detailed picture of the area. • Biopsy is a method in which a doctor may insert a needle into the lump to draw out either the liquid or cell sample to examine under a microscope to tell for certain if the tissue is cancerous or not. Four out of five women who have a biopsy do not have cancer. If it is found that the cancer test comes out positive, then further lab work will be needed. One of the most common tests is checking the tumor cells for hormone receptors. Certain hormones can trigger growth in a cell. The second test is the HER2/ neu test. This determines how the breast cells grow and divide. If they are dividing too often and growing too much or too fast, that’s a problem. The results of these tests can help the doctor determine what treatment to use. Common treatments used today are: • Radiation is used to kill any mutated cells. • Since some hormones can cause cancer cells to develop and grow, using hormone blockers can starve the abnormal cells. • Target therapy uses drugs that block

cancer cell growth. • Surgery is the most common treatment for breast cancer. Surgeons remove the lump and surrounding tissue in the breast, whether using a lumpectomy, removing just the lump, or mastectomy, which is removing the entire breast, chest wall and lymph nodes. One Tulsa woman is now on the other side of the breast cancer fight. Dr. Wendy Shirk, board-certified coach of Shirk Consulting, LLC, takes a lighthearted approach to her challenging journey even though tormenting days were very near and present. “I was shocked when I got the phone call on Valentine’s Day...I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma; I had breast cancer,” Shirk said. “I opted for a double mastectomy with reconstruction. I was fortunate that I didn’t need radiation or chemotherapy, unlike so many others. My faith, family, and friends sustained me during my journey. with my personality—as they brought over delicious meals and watched movies in bed with me. My friends formed a support system around me; we called it the Best Friends Boobie Doobie Club, aka The Breasties. I never felt alone. I’m thankful to be cancerfree now. In my coaching practice, I am enjoying helping newly-diagnosed pink sisters with their journeys. I’m part of a sisterhood with strong bonds that will never be broken.” What most people don’t realize is that men get breast cancer too, but chances are much lower than in women, only one in 1,000. The good news is that there is help and support. Most health insurance policies cover annual mammograms. Prostate Cancer Awareness: Helpful Information & Resources BY CHRIS PUTMAN

ost people are aware that the number one killer of men is heart disease. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, nearly 700,000 men die of heart disease each year. So then what is the number two killer? Cancer. One type of cancer common to men is prostate cancer. There are 200,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year with 30,000 dying from the disease, according to the Prostate Health Guide at http://www. prostatehealthguide.com/awareness/ prostate-cancer-awareness-month/. The purpose of their guide is to educate men that early detection is the key to lifesaving treatment. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is the medical babble for an enlarged prostate. What is the prostate for? What does it do? The prostate is the male sex gland that produces fluid for semen. While an enlarged prostate is the most common problematic prostate condition for men over age 50, it is not a cancerous condition. It is so common,

half of the men between the ages of 50-60 will develop it. Think those are high odds? Hang on to your hat. By age 80, up to 90 percent of all men will have the condition, and the ongoing enlarging may continue for the rest of their natural lives. How does a man know if he has an enlarged prostate? The BPH symptoms are: • Frequent urination, and more so at night. • The frustrating inability to empty the bladder. • A weak stream of urine. • Feeling the need to strain to get the urination process going. • Leaking after urinating. If a man is beginning to panic because they can tick off several items on the checklist, relax. Symptoms of BPH doesn’t mean cancer is imminent. Then how does a man be aware of and avoid the disease? It’s been said before; early detection is the answer. There are two forms of

identifying the presence of the disease long before symptoms appear. One is a digital rectal exam, or DRE, where the doctor feels the gland for any abnormalities. Second, there is a blood test that can detect elevated levels that are a red flag. The test is called a prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, blood test. The doctor will be looking for numbers outside of the normal range. It is recommended that every man have a baseline PSA and DRE at age 40 so his health care provider can compare ongoing tests over the years against the original exam. If the disease is caught early, it is treatable. That’s a lot of prostate talk, but what are the odds of a man being diagnosed with prostate cancer? The chances are one man in seven. There are several risk factors which include: • Race. African American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer. • Family history. Men with several family members diagnosed with prostate cancer may indicate a genetic link. • Age. Increased age leaves a man more vulnerable to a variety of health-related conditions, including prostate cancer. • Toxic chemicals. Men who have worked around lethal chemicals or have been exposed to Agent Orange have an increased incidence of the disease. One Tulsa man had a recent run-in with prostate cancer. “When you first hear you have cancer, it is a bit of a shock,” Oral Roberts University Assistant Professor of Media Mark Labash said. “It puts the present life in the proper perspective. You realize that you could be saying goodbye to everything you ever worked for, saying goodbye to all your friends and relatives, and essentially leaving this earth naked and alone the way you came in. As a Christian, my hope and future are in the Lord’s hands, so I simply relaxed in Him. I knew I had three options: to be healed through medicine, to be healed by God, or to die and go to live with Jesus for eternity.

In all three, I win. My surgery went well, and I am trusting that I will be cancer-free. I have a doctor’s appointment Thursday to have a blood test to determine my future plans. Time will tell.” Early on, prostate cancer is usually silent, showing no symptoms. As the disease is left untreated, however, indicators begin to raise their heads. Some of the symptoms of prostate cancer are more serious than those with BPH: • Hip or back pain • Difficulty urinating • Painful or burning urination • Bloody urine Women tend to take care of themselves better than men and regularly keep up with their yearly exams. What can women do to encourage their men to seek medical help if they see some of these symptoms in their loved ones? Get involved in encouraging the men in your life’s healthcare, keep him educated with what to look for, and schedule his doctor appointments. Labash’s wife, Deborah Labash, in all actuality, saved her husband’s life. “I missed my husband’s first meeting with his new doctor,” Deborah Labash said. “He assured me it was a run-ofthe-mill appointment with bloodwork ordered. Notebook in hand, I attended the second meeting and asked the doctor what his PSA numbers were the previous year. I was expecting the PSA test would have been ordered, since my husband had higher than normal levels in his medical history, only to find out it had not been checked. I asked for a PSA check and his vitamin D level. It came back positive for cancer. As prevalent as cancer is, you still never expect it to hit your home. Men tend to downplay and ignore symptoms until it’s a problem they are forced to address.
