Wine, Eats & Easels The 11th annual evening of drink, food and art will be held Friday, October 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with all proceeds going to assist financially disabled locals through Broken Arrow Neighbors.

Good friends, good times, or being dry, or lest we should be by and by, or any other reason why.” One of the “other reasons why” mentioned in this popular toast is that drinking can help those in need! Proceeds from the 11th annual Wine, Eats & Easels on Friday, October 5 will once again go directly to Broken Arrow Neighbors, a non-profit organization that provides basic needs emergency assistance to more than 11,000 financially disadvantaged residents in the Broken Arrow area. Of course, “good friends” and “good times” are included in the event as well, which will feature 18 talented local artists displaying and selling their works in a variety of mediums,

more than 20 wineries to prevent any attendee from having to go “dry,” and 15 restaurants with delicious eats to complement your wine and stimulate your palate. Back by popular

demand, the evening air will be filled with the smooth jazz stylings of Grady Nichols and his band. The event takes place at the Farmer’s Market in historic (continued on page 28)

Jim Norton now has two state-ofthe-art Collision Centers. Director of Operations Jim Page oversees activities at the new location just south of the Creek Turnpike at 97th and Memorial. David Burgess is manager of the Jim Norton Collision Center that has been serving Tulsa for many years, located east of Garnett on 58th Street. Both stores are equipped with state-ofthe-art equipment, ASE, ICAR, and Toyota certified technicians, and the great quality and service for which Jim Norton is known. In addition to providing collision repair services, both locations have automotive accessories departments that sell to the public for all makes and models of vehicles. Products and services available include leather seat covers, seat heaters, wheels, tires, spray-in bed liners,

takes place Saturday, October 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Clarence Oliver Middle School, 3100 W. New Orleans (101st St.) in Broken Arrow. Admission is free. The Arts & Crafts Benefit Bazaar will feature a wide variety of items from more than 100 vendors. You’ll find clothing and accessories, home décor items, blankets and pillows, stained glass, knitted items, woodwork, Native American art, paintings, seasonal items, stationery, pet treats, pottery and ceramics, and food including soup, fudge and baked goods. The bazaar will also feature a used book sale. “The variety and creativity of the handmade items our crafters create is amazing,” says event co-chair Nancy Stanley. “It’s fun to see how each crafter can make one item so differently. One of our returning crafters, Debra Jackson, is a great example of that.” Debra’s line of crafts, Kidz Kreationz, includes T-shirts, keepsake boxes, pillows,

Since the bazaar began, the Alpha Rho Chapter has raised over $240,000 for local, state and international philanthropic projects. Beneficiaries include Broken Arrow Neighbors, Broken Arrow Meals on Wheels, Broken Arrow Public Schools, Parkview School for the Blind, Jane Brooks School for the Deaf, college and vocational school scholarships, local needy

family assistance, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Margaret Hudson Program, Clarehouse, Easter Seals, and Hope for Heroes. “A number of these charities rely very heavily on our support, and that’s one of the reasons our benefit bazaar is so important,” says Nancy. Concessions will be available at the bazaar. A raffle will be held throughout the day for items donated by crafters. So many folks are optically crippled by using them, because they have one at several locations at their home or office. Still, they are never near them when needed. GGo Nuts on Route 66 The Nut House’s annual Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest will be Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. By Lorrie Ward Jackson This summer’s drought affected many crops, but northeastern Oklahoma’s pecan trees proved to be a bunch of “hard nuts to crack.” Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House, observes, “The pecan trees are full, though the nuts are a little on the small side, but we are hopeful the pecans will be an abundant crop.” To celebrate this bounty, The Nut House will host its yearly Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “Fun Fest” is an apt description of this event, as it will be filled with color and creativity, with handmade crafts, fall themed activities, local music by Bethany Grace & Gypsy Soul and Klondike5 String Band, and tasty food, making it a celebration for all ages. This year’s craft show promises to be bigger than ever, giving local artisans a chance to display authentic, handmade goods and other “Made in Oklahoma” items of interest. In the spirit of keeping history and tradition, Hazel has invited a local weaver to demonstrate how she spins her own yarn on a

loom. The Nut House is still accepting vendor applications and will continue to do so up until the week of the event, as long as space is still available. Since this autumn festival is held so close to autumn’s signature holiday – Halloween – The

Nut House will feature plenty of events inspired by this date, including face painting, pumpkin painting, and a costume contest. The age range for the costume contest is birth to 12 years, with judging held at 2 p.m., and any theme is welcome. “Last year, we

had everything from a bumble bee to a vampire,” Hazel recalls. “It was a lot of fun.” Great food is always available at the Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest, with Hot Mama’s Deli offering its usual line of goodies: sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats and Amish cheeses, homemade broccoli salad, cookies, cupcakes and much more – and of course, homemade pecan pie! This will be the fourth year The Nut House has hosted this festival. For many years, the Pecan Festival was held in Okmulgee, but in 2009, when Hazel heard it would be discontinued, she welcomed the opportunity to continue the

tradition. She added the reference to Route 66, not only because of The Nut House’s location, but because she is committed to preserving the memory of this strip of highway that is such an integral part of Oklahoma’s history. “Oklahoma had 400 miles of Highway 66, more than any of the seven states it ran through,” Hazel notes. “It was the first highway to run from the Midwest to California – and there are still bits and pieces of the old road bed to be found across the state.” In the spirit of tradition, a good friend of the family, Delbert Tygart, allowed Hazel’s husband, Darryl, to attach The Nut House’s Route 66 emblem to his restored 1966 Chevy Impala Super Sport. The car recently represented The Nut House at the 2012 Hot Rod Power Tour and will make an appearance at the Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest. “Both this car and Route 66 are reminders of a simpler time,” says Hazel. “We want to honor that.” Festival sponsors are Champion Refuse, Midwest Crane Services, Suburban Chevrolet, Bank of Commerce and Turf/Land Equipment.

AA 29-Year Pattern The 29th annual Quilt Show will be November 2-3, 2012 at the Creek County Fairgrounds in Kellyville. By Sheryl Sowell The 29th annual Quilt Show, presented by Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) of Creek County, will be held November 2-3, 2012 at the Creek County Fairgrounds in Kellyville (located four and a half miles west of Sapulpa). Admission is $3 for adults, and children are admitted free. Hours are Friday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Quilt Show will feature door prizes, a Tea Room, and a variety of vendors. All proceeds will be used to award two $500 college scholarships – one for an adult and one for a high school senior in Creek County. Last year the adult scholarship went to a single mom with two children who is pursuing a career in the medical field. If any money remains after the scholarships are awarded, it is used to begin organizing next year’s Quilt Show. Sharon Pettit, a 16-year member of OHCE, is excited to be co-chairing the show for the second year. “It’s fun to walk through the Quilt Show and look at all the pretty quilts.

There are so many different colors and designs. Some of the quilts are sewn with a machine, and some are hand-quilted.” Select quilts will be for sale. Quilts are still being

Oklahoma Home and Community Education is an organization committed to education about family and consumer issues, community service, and bringing friends together. OHCE members are adults of all ages and genders who are interested in continuing their education in family life skills, and the group has a strong history of promoting family values and shaping communities. AArt on Main The premier art festival in Jenks returns Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. By Sheryl Sowell The 9th annual Art on Main will be held Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Jenks. A variety of art mediums will be on display and available for purchase, including pottery, oil paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, drawings, glass, mixed media, watercolors, fiber, photography, metal smith, woodcarving and more. The family-friendly event also includes live entertainment, artist demonstrations, children’s activities and a variety of food vendors. Callie McCurdy, communications intern at the Jenks Chamber of Commerce, has attended Art on Main for the past several years, and she is excited to be helping organize the event for the first time. Callie grew up in Jenks and graduated from Jenks High School. She will graduate from Northeastern State University next May with a degree in marketing and is thrilled to be serving her senior internship at her hometown’s chamber. “Art on Main has always been one of my favorite events in Jenks, and I’m so happy to be able to be a

part of making it happen this year,” says Callie. The juried panel consisted of local artists in the community who selected 100 talented artists for Art on Main. The mission of this signature art show is to create access to a broad array of arts experiences, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in Oklahoma. A change to this year’s setup is that all artist booths will be centered down Main Street in downtown Jenks. “This will allow a more engaging experience, as festival-goers will be able to also visit the many great antiques stores and shops along Main Street,” says Callie. Another new addition is a section specifically for art students from Oral Roberts University to display their works. Live entertainment and art demonstrations, including pottery demonstrations, will be held throughout the day. This year’s children’s section will feature Bounce Pro inflatables, face painting, and

lots of arts and crafts. Organizations with booths for kids include local churches and the Jenks High School Art Club. This type of drawing together of people in the community earned Art on Main the 2009 Outstanding Community Initiative Award, presented by the Oklahoma Community Institute. Since then, word has traveled throughout the state that Art on Main is a premier art and family festival. HHip to a Pain-Free Life Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living without pain after a total hip replacement from Dr. LaButti. By Lorrie Ward Many people think joint replacements are only necessary in one’s later years, when joints begin to show signs of a lifetime of wear and tear. But joints can be irreparably damaged at any age. Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living proof. “I was in my 30s when I injured my hip in a softball game,” Mike recounts. “The injury left me with constant pain and a bad limp.” When these two things did not go away, Mike visited a doctor and had an MRI, which revealed a grim prognosis: that he would eventually need to have a hip replacement. “I put up with the problem for several years,” says Mike, who relates that things became so bad, he was taking 20 to 30 aspirin a day just to be able to function and sleep. “Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore.” Mike had seen advertisements for Dr. Ronald LaButti and decided to call for a consultation last summer. “I already knew what he would tell me – that I needed the hip replaced,” said Mike. “But I really appreciated that he was upfront and straightforward with me right from the beginning, and didn’t try to force

anything on me.” Once Mike decided on surgery as his best option, Dr. LaButti relayed exactly what he could anticipate during his experience, from how much time off work he would require to how much pain he could expect during recovery. “He was honest

with me about the pain that would come afterwards,” Mike said. “But he said the outcome would be better.” And it was. For Mike, some results were immediate. “I remember waking up in the hospital,” he says, “and noticing right away that the nagging pain

in my groin and hip I’d been living with for years was gone.” Dr. LaButti had predicted anywhere from six to twelve weeks off work, and Mike returned to the job in seven. When he did, his employees observed the amazing changes. “Everyone noticed my limp was gone,” he

recalls. “Now they all say I walk faster than anyone in the shop – and I don’t have to pull myself up and down the stairs like I did before, either.” It has been a little over a year since his surgery, and Mike now embraces a whole range of activities that were impossible before, both major and seemingly minor. “I no longer have to have help putting my shoes on,” says Mike. “And I only take aspirin for headaches.” Mike purchased an above ground swimming pool to help him with rehabilitation, and he can easily get up and down the ladder, which is something he could not have done before the surgery. And best of all, he can ride a motorcycle again. “I bought a big old 900-pound bike,” he says with a grin. “There was no way I could ride before or even hold it up.” Now that he’s become accustomed to a normal existence again, Mike wonders why he put off the surgery for so long. “I tell people, ‘If you’re having pain, don’t wait so many years and let it deteriorate like I did,’” he says. “I should have visited Dr. LaButti a lot sooner. My life is so much better now.”
