Educational and Spiritual Growth American Christian Academy offers students the option of private schooling or home schooling based on the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum. By Duane Blankenship Rose Mary Lopes directs the educational programs offered at American Christian Academy (ACA) in Sapulpa. “Students attending ACA receive more than an education,” says Rose Mary. “We provide them insight and experiences that are unique to our program. ACA is an environment that develops spiritual growth through a culture where faculty, staff and students have a genuine concern for each other.” The school wants students to succeed spiritually, academically and socially. “Many of our students elect studies that prepare them for continuing their education at vo-tech schools or Tulsa Community College, and for life.” The curriculum adopted by American Christian Academy is that developed by Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) School for Tomorrow, where the

motto is “Reaching the World for Christ…One Child at a Time.” For more than three decades, the A.C.E. curriculum has recognized the need to unlock the doors to success for their students. “A.C.E. has done extensive research on how children learn,” says Mrs. Lopes. “A.C.E. research and other educational surveys indicate to us that children: 1) Have varying IQs and learn at different rates; 2) Must learn specific developmental skills; 3) Process information differently at individual developmental levels; 4) Learn best through mastery with repetition and review; and 5) Vary in their ability to learn through visual and auditory.” The school offers courses in core curriculum including math, English, science and history, plus many electives that include music and art. All studies begin with a

Bible verse that each student must memorize. These Bible verses are included on periodic progress tests. Since children have varying IQs and learn at different rates, ACA believes it is critical to conduct periodic testing that will determine each student’s knowledge and current performance level. They provide a diagnosis and a prescription for each child’s individual educational path. “Diagnostic placement testing ensures that each student begins studies at the precise point of his or her academic needs,” says Mrs. Lopes, “and it determines if there are any learning gaps that need to be addressed and mended.” Students are then able to simply fill in the gaps, without the stigma of failing a grade or falling behind. Jeff Leslie is the Bob Hurley Ford Performance Center accessories manager and is known by friends and fellow employees as the “The Accessories Guru.” Jeff has been in the performance accessories business for years and came to Bob Hurley Ford two years ago. He was hired to start up Hurley’s Performance Center, but they had no idea the department would grow so much in such a short while. Jeff is assisted by Kori Hurley and, as Jeff put it, “Kori hit the ground running. She works hard and is eagerly learning the performance parts and accessories business. AA 29-Year Pattern The 29th annual Quilt Show will be November 2-3, 2012 at the Creek County Fairgrounds in Kellyville. By Sheryl Sowell The 29th annual Quilt Show, presented by Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) of Creek County, will be held November 2-3, 2012 at the Creek County Fairgrounds in Kellyville (located four and a half miles west of Sapulpa). Admission is $3 for adults, and children are admitted free. Hours are Friday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Quilt Show will feature door prizes, a Tea Room, and a variety of vendors. All proceeds will be used to award two $500 college scholarships – one for an adult and one for a high school senior in Creek County. Last year the adult scholarship went to a single mom with two children who is pursuing a career in the medical field. If any money remains after the scholarships are awarded, it is used to begin organizing next year’s Quilt Show. Sharon Pettit, a 16-year member of OHCE, is excited to be co-chairing the show for the second year. “It’s fun to walk through the Quilt Show and look at all the pretty quilts.

There are so many different colors and designs. Some of the quilts are sewn with a machine, and some are hand-quilted.” Select quilts will be for sale. Quilts are still being

She is a talented quilt maker, and her hand-stitched, full size “Country Sampler” quilt will be raffled off at the Quilt Show on Saturday, November 3. Another raffle being held is for a wooden homemade quilting frame, donated by Walter Griggs in memory of his wife, Maxine, who was an OHCE member for many years. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. A variety of vendors will be selling items such as candles,

fabric, arts and crafts items, baked goods and more. “It’s set up like a country fair. You’ll find a lot of neat items to get started on your Christmas shopping,” says Sharon. Musicians playing dulcimers will provide live entertainment throughout the show. When all of that quilt viewing and shopping has your stomach growling, you can stop into the Tea Room to purchase a delicious lunch. Oklahoma Home and Community Education is an organization committed to education about family and consumer issues, community service, and bringing friends together. OHCE members are adults of all ages and genders who are interested in continuing their education in family life skills, and the group has a strong history of promoting family values and shaping communities. In addition to the annual Quilt Show, Creek County HCE members provide concessions at livestock shows, county fair projects, and community service. A Cross Between Paris Flea Market and Winter Wonderland

Vintage Market Days is a pop-up marketplace bringing the vintage experience right to you. By Duane Blankenship Vintage Market Days is a pop-up marketplace that brings the vintage experience to the Tulsa metro area three times each year. The concept was conceived by Amy Scott and Dianna Brown, who have been friends for many years. The next Vintage Market Days is themed “A Holiday Affair” and is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 9-11, 2012 at Carmichael Farms, located at 171st & Mingo in Bixby. Vendors from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Texas will be exhibiting a wide variety of high-quality handmade and vintage goods. “We absolutely love bringing Vintage to the Tulsa area,” said Dianna. When asked to describe Vintage Market Days, Amy replied, “It is like a cross between a Paris flea market and a winter wonderland. It will be a charming, festive, fun-filled three days for all.” Tickets for the event will be $10 for the early buying event on Friday, and $5 general admission for Saturday and Sunday. Pay once and you can come back each succeeding day of the weekend. Children 12 and under admitted free. Hours are Friday

from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Both Amy and Dianna say they love doing Vintage Market Days. “It gives us the opportunity to help exhibiting entrepreneurs do what they love doing, and it enables us to give back to Tulsa and surrounding communities,” added Amy. Vintage Market Days will include approximately 80 vendors with exhibits featuring home and holiday décor, great food, unique gift ideas, architectural salvage, and so much more. And with a holiday theme, you can probably count on some sparkle, twinkle and bright lights. “There will be handmade furniture and decorations, recycled and repurposed old vintage items, and vintage mixed with modern,” said Amy. Musicians will perform for guests as they peruse exhibits. All Vintage Market Days exhibitors must be juried into the show; it is not a typical flea market, craft show or garage sale. The Vintage Market Days held in June drew an estimated 7,000 visitors. When you visit Vintage Market Days, be sure to bring an

There is no cutting or stapling needed to divide the upper stomach pouch from the lower stomach. The result is that patients take in less food. The ideal patient has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or higher with at least one comorbidity (secondary disorder or disease), which typically includes type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep

apnea, and osteoarthritis. The patient generally wants to lose 80 to 100 pounds and is motivated to lose the weight. The wine pull will return this year, with a new, elegant twist. J. David Jewelry has donated 100 pearl necklaces to give to the first 100 people who purchase a bottle from the wine pull. Cost for the mystery wine is $25, and if you’re lucky, you could pull a bottle worth $80 or more.

According to Kate, one of the most popular activities of the evening is the Buttsketch. “This draws a portrait of your back side in a very attractive, tasteful way. People really love it, and usually frame their butt sketches.” Special guests of the event will be some of the Thunder cheerleaders and Rumble the mascot, ready to meet and greet the Oklahoma City Thunder fans in the crowd. Tickets are $50 at the door and $40 in advance. Advance tickets may be purchased at Broken Arrow Neighbors, Star Jewelers, SpiritBank at 96th and Memorial, Holiday Inn Express near Bass Pro Shops, and AVB Bank locations in Broken Arrow. A private VIP area will be held upstairs of the BA Historical Society Museum, featuring music by The Midtown Trio. VIP tickets are $125 per person. Attire for Wine, Eats & Easels is business casual, and attendees must be 21 or older.
