The Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma uses the Lap-Band® Adjustable Gastric Banding System by Allergan. According to Dr. Ladd Atkins, “It is by far the safest weight loss surgery device on the market today.” Dr. Atkins explains that the Lap-Band® System is much safer than stomach stapling or gastric bypass surgery because there is no cutting or stapling involved. This process is the least invasive way to use surgery to reduce the amount of food the stomach can hold. “It’s less invasive than gall bladder surgery,” Dr. Adkins explains. The Lap-Band® Adjustable Gastric Banding System restricts
how much the stomach can hold by placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach. There is no cutting or stapling needed to divide the upper stomach pouch from the lower stomach. The result is that patients take in less food. The ideal patient has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or higher with at least one comorbidity (secondary disorder or disease), which typically includes type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. The patient generally wants to lose 80 to 100 pounds and is motivated to lose the weight. Lap-Band® patient Sherrel (continued on page 28)
This summer’s drought affected many crops, but northeastern Oklahoma’s pecan trees proved to be a bunch of “hard nuts to crack.” Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House, observes, “The

STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Top 10 Reasons Why You Should NOT Invest In The Stock Market! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Nearly every day I hear folks tell me about why they think they should not invest in the stock market right now. Some of them seem to be relatively reasonable fears about investing, some not so much. I do declare! I have some stories I would tell you about all the excuses I have heard….all the way back to the stories my Mamaw used to tell about the Great Depression of 1934 (that stuff would curl your toes!), but that would take more than a month of Sunday’s to recount. So, I will give you the most popular excuses I have heard over the last 13 years and see if you can relate to any of them. 1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash all the world’s computers. “We will have no accounting of our money at the bank or on our brokerage statements!” 2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “The market is crashing. It will never come back!” 2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed both World Trade Centers and the hit the Pentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next. We need to have all of our money under a mattress at home!” 2002: Corporate Accounting Issues. “Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing have all betrayed investors therefore all companies are corrupt and we should not invest!” 2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped out New Orleans! “This is the beginning of the end!” 2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/ Global Financial Crisis. “The banks are collapsing. There will be no more
economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBC in a crisis! That’s another story all together!) 2009: Worst recession since the Great Depression. “The market won’t come back for 20 years!” 2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, U.S. Debt Ceiling. “No one in the world is going to have any money! We are all going to hell in a handbasket!” 2012: Presidential Election pending November 2012. “The U.S. deficit is so high that America can’t regain its financial strength!” 2012: The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverse and we will all fall out into space. Therefore, there is no need for retirement planning.” (This one takes the cake!) Here is ONE good reason why you SHOULD invest in the markets: $23,288,100. This is the amount, a
www.ValueNews.com
mere $10,000 invested in the markets in January of 1934 would have been worth on December 31, 2010, based on the performance of the S&P 500 index. Emotionally we are always thinking of reasons not to invest in the stock market. Clearly these headlines and the fears that they create devise volatility in the stock market. The truth is the markets always climb a wall of worry. If you stick your head in the sand to avoid the fears and worry, the markets will pass you by. It matters where you are invested. It matters who you choose to help you. Find someone who can help you invest your money and manage the volatility. Find someone who can help you deal with your fears through common sense. Wine, Eats & Easels W The 11th annual evening of drink, food and art will be held Friday, October 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with all proceeds going to assist financially disabled locals through Broken Arrow Neighbors.
By Sheryl Sowell “If all be true that I do think, there are five reasons we should drink. Good friends, good times, or being dry, or lest we should be by and by, or any other reason why.” One of the “other reasons
why” mentioned in this popular toast is that drinking can help those in need! Proceeds from the 11th annual Wine, Eats & Easels on Friday, October 5 will once again go directly to Broken
Arrow Neighbors, a non-profit organization that provides basic needs emergency assistance to more than 11,000 financially disadvantaged residents in the Broken Arrow area.
The Wine, Eats & Easels committee includes (L to R): Debbie Murphy, Adam J. Foreman, Kate Buster, LaTonya Cundiff, Kelley Rash, Jo McCord, Mark Suffal, Alisa Inglett and David Blue.
TULSA
Of course, “good friends” and “good times” are included in the event as well, which will feature 18 talented local artists displaying and selling their works in a variety of mediums, more than 20 wineries to prevent any attendee from having to go “dry,” and 15 restaurants with delicious eats to complement your wine and stimulate your palate. Back by popular demand, the evening air will be filled with the smooth jazz stylings of Grady Nichols and his band. The event takes place at the Farmer’s Market in historic downtown Broken Arrow, next to the BA Historical Society Museum. “In the past, this fundraiser has been described as ‘northeast Oklahoma’s classiest event,’ and we think it is,” says Kate Buster, event coordinator. Wine, Eats & Easels brings together some of the most eclectic and diverse artists from across the region. Artists display their art for sale and stick around to talk to patrons about their work. “You’ll find something for everyone – paintings, sculptures, jewelry, pottery, photography and more,” says Kate. The wine pull will return this year, with a new, elegant twist. J. David Jewelry has donated 100 pearl necklaces to give to the first 100 people who purchase a bottle from the wine pull. Cost for the mystery wine is $25, and if you’re lucky, you could pull a bottle worth $80 or more.
Page 5
According to Kate, one of the most popular activities of the evening is the Buttsketch. “This draws a portrait of your back side in a very attractive, tasteful way. People really love it, and usually frame their butt sketches.” Special guests of the event will be some of the Thunder cheerleaders and Rumble the mascot, ready to meet and greet the Oklahoma City Thunder fans in the crowd. Tickets are $50 at the door and $40 in advance. Advance tickets may be purchased at Broken Arrow Neighbors, Star Jewelers, SpiritBank at 96th and Memorial, Holiday Inn Express near Bass Pro Shops, and AVB Bank locations in Broken Arrow. A private VIP area will be held upstairs of the BA Historical Society Museum, featuring music by The Midtown Trio. VIP tickets are $125 per person. Attire for Wine, Eats & Easels is business casual, and attendees must be 21 or older. Don’t miss this festive, energetic, fun event on October 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., benefitting Broken Arrow Neighbors (www.baneighbors.com).

A Cross Between Paris Flea Market and Winter Wonderland
Vintage Market Days is a pop-up marketplace bringing the vintage experience right to you. By Duane Blankenship Vintage Market Days is a pop-up marketplace that brings the vintage experience to the Tulsa metro area three times each year. The concept was conceived by Amy Scott and Dianna Brown, who have been friends for many years. The next Vintage Market Days is themed “A Holiday Affair” and is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 9-11, 2012 at Carmichael Farms, located at 171st & Mingo in Bixby. Vendors from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Texas will be exhibiting a wide variety of high-quality handmade and vintage goods. “We absolutely love bringing Vintage to the Tulsa area,” said Dianna. When asked to describe Vintage Market Days, Amy replied, “It is like a cross between a Paris flea market and a winter wonderland. It will be a charming, festive, fun-filled three days for all.” Tickets for the event will be $10 for the early buying event on Friday, and $5 general admission for Saturday and Sunday. Pay once and you can come back each succeeding day of the weekend. Children 12 and under admitted free. Hours are Friday
from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Both Amy and Dianna say they love doing Vintage Market Days. “It gives us the opportunity to help exhibiting entrepreneurs do what they love doing, and it enables us to give back to Tulsa and surrounding communities,” added Amy. Vintage Market Days will include approximately 80 vendors with exhibits featuring home and holiday décor, great food, unique gift ideas, architectural salvage, and so much more. And with a holiday theme, you can probably count on some sparkle, twinkle and bright lights. “There will be handmade furniture and decorations, recycled and repurposed old vintage items, and vintage mixed with modern,” said Amy. Musicians will perform for guests as they peruse exhibits. All Vintage Market Days exhibitors must be juried into the show; it is not a typical flea market, craft show or garage sale. The Vintage Market Days held in June drew an estimated 7,000 visitors. When you visit Vintage Market Days, be sure to bring an
appetite. Food vendors will be on hand with specialties including cupcakes, hot dogs, barbecue, hot and cold beverages, and “Bite Me” miniature pies. Three Sisters Kitchen will be one of several food vendors catering the three-day event. A special tent will house featured vendors. This year this will include Tim and Kara Pasley, who are experts on “out-of-thebox” creative designing. The Pasleys have been featured on “The Nate Berkus Show.” The Pasleys will be doing live demonstrations and will offer a “make and take” project for a minimal fee. Lori Young of Vintage Charms Restored will also be a featured vendor. Her specialty is painted furniture using Maison Blanche Paint Company’s La Craie chalk-based paint. Another featured guest is V’las Salon & Spa, who will be doing demonstrations of vintage inspired hair designs. Visit www.vintagemarketdays.com for more information or “like” them on Facebook. The next Vintage Market Days will be an urban style event that is scheduled for
Amy Scott and Dianna Brown are partners and creators of Vintage Market Days. March 8-10, 2013. It will be held in a warehouse in downtown Tulsa. Watch for future announcements and details. The November Vintage Market Days will benefit Crosstown Learning Center. Event sponsors include Community Home Health, Prairie Hive, Ellen Hargrove Photography, Blue Haven Pools, V’las Salon & Spa, and Jackson’s Woodworks. Amy and
Dianna invite you and your friends to join them at Vintage Market Days, “A Holiday Affair,” this November 9-11 at Carmichael Farms. The show goes on rain or shine! For more information, contact

AVB Bank is pleased to announce that Ben Dejene, vice president and retail banking director, has successfully completed the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado (GSBC). GSBC is a multi-year community banking school based in Boulder, with over 67 percent of their attendee banks reporting assets under $500 million. A targeted community banking curriculum is provided through GSBC, structured around four tracks – leadership and human resources, general management, lending, and financial management. The 62nd annual session of GSBC graduated 116 bankers; Dejene was one of only 12 Oklahoma graduate bankers. “GSBC is the country’s premier graduate community banking school. They offer a first-class educational experience and help cultivate the next generation of community bank leaders,” said Jim Boze, AVB’s CEO and president. “Ben has built an impeccable reputation as a banking professional. We are proud of his career accomplishment and his commitment to AVB Bank’s continued success.” State of Oklahoma Bank Commissioner Mick Thompson attended the graduation ceremonies and congratulated Dejene on his successful completion of the program and his dedication to the field of banking. Boze, along with Kelley Rash, AVB chairman of the board, and Kelli Sowell, AVB senior vice president, were also in attendance as Dejene and his graduating class were recognized for their achievements and completion of the

With AVB since 2003, he is a graduate of the Oklahoma Bankers Association (OBA) schools of Consumer Lending and Intermediate Banking. He is also a graduate of Leadership Broken Arrow and was recently voted by Broken Arrow Ledger readers as one of Broken Arrow’s favorite financial advisors. Dejene holds a bachelor’s degree from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

ARE YOU STILL USING DRUGSTORE READERS? Doing your own optometry at a drugstore and settling for a mass production reader is a little like using your shoe to drive in a nail. So many folks are optically crippled by using them, because they have one at several locations at their home or office. Still, they are never near them when needed. Or, they wind up sitting or stepping on them, because they are not CONSTANTLY ON THEIR FACE like complete RX eyewear. They don’t seem to figure the cost of losing and breaking them or that the safest place for any glasses is ON YOUR FACE. Since they are mass produced, the optical center (point of lens where light passes un-deviated) width is not the same as the person’s personal pupillary distance measurement. This does not mean you will physically hurt your eyes with them, but it does mean that unwanted PRISM can be generated that causes eyestrain and possible double vision in the higher powers. Also, one eye may demand more strength than the other eye. Then, there is no correction in these mass produced readers to correct for astigmatism. It may be possible that even your doctor recommended them due to budgetary concerns. In the lower powers they can suffice, but a custom made reader or half glass with your doctor’s RX is always the best and can be made to help with heavy computer screen or near use. Many of the folks who use drugstore readers are people who basically have pretty good distance vision. Still yet, some of these SAME folks complain they cannot see street signs at night clearly. What typically happens is that they are told to get drugstore readers to save cost. In doing that, the DOCTOR’S distance correction (albeit a mild correction) IS NEVER UTILIZED. Therefore the best acuity DISTANCE and NEAR is NEVER ACHIEVED!

SO WHAT IS THE BEST SOLUTION? Our solution to these problems is to obtain a current doctor’s RX (Ophthalmologist or Optometrist) and then bring this prescription to a competent Optician. We will carefully assist you in the frame selection so as to consider the prescription, optics, and ergonomic fit. We use two philosophies in styling: a. the minimalist look, which provides the lightest weight and nearly invisible look, or b. traditional plastics and metals with adornments for the ladies to produce that high fashion look.

Our lenses of choice will be the Seiko Perfas Prestige II Digital with Surpass Anti Reflective Coat. We will Pre-Fit the frame, take exacting personal measurements and make absolutely sure these measurements exist in the final inspection of the eyewear. Your new eyewear will become part of you and your visual system and you will look, see and feel GREAT, just like so many of our fine customers over the last 18 years!

the great quality and service for which Jim Norton is known. In addition to providing collision repair services, both locations have automotive accessories departments that sell to the public for all makes and models of vehicles. Products and services available include leather seat covers, seat heaters, wheels, tires, spray-in bed liners, receivers for trailer hitches, lift kits, and lots of truck accessories. Both collision centers house industry-leading Nova Verta paint booths. With over 30 years of experience, Nova Verta has pioneered solutions to create the
97th and Memorial highest quality paint booths available, and their Sikkens waterborne paint is environmentally friendly. Jim Norton Collision Center utilizes only the highest quality equipment to ensure the highest quality repairs. “Our Car-O-Tronic Vision is the most sophisticated computer measuring system in the industry today,” said David. “It utilizes precise touch technology that not only identifies damage to your car that can be seen, but primary and secondary damage you can’t see. This helps our highly trained and skilled
technicians develop more efficient repair plans to eliminate comebacks and, more importantly, identify hidden damages that will be paid for by your insurance company.” Both locations also provide paintless dent repair and auto and truck detailing. Collision Center repair technicians undergo a rigorous training schedule. Each technician must complete at least 40 hours of individual technical training a year, plus E-module learning and recertification. “Both Collision Centers have rental cars available to customers with an appointment,”

Six Do’s and Don’ts When Traveling on a Cruise
RCB Bank Experiences Club Directors Lori Nuzum and Anita Judd-Jenkins offer six do’s and don’ts of traveling on a cruise. Travelers do not have to be customers of RCB Bank to enjoy these upcoming travel opportunities. By Jocelyn M. Wood Fall is in the air; winter is not far behind. It’s time to start planning your winter getaway. Get away from the cold weather this January on a 10-day Hawaiian cruise with RCB Bank’s Experiences travel club. Spots are still available for travelers to jump on board. Travel dates are January 10-19, 2013. “A $600 deposit reserves your space and customers can get a full refund before October 3, should they change their mind,” says Lori Nuzum, RCB Bank Experiences Club Director and trip coordinator. Leave your coat in the closet and pull out your favorite summer dress. Travelers will experience the islands’ diverse beauty and lively history, including Pearl Harbor, Kona’s famous coffee plantation and lush gardens, waterfalls and exotic wildlife. Lori Nuzum and RCB Experiences Club Director Anita Judd-Jenkins have coordinated and traveled on more than 500 trips. They offer six do’s and don’ts of traveling on a cruise. Do pack light. “You’ll never wear all the clothes you take,”
says Lori Nuzum. Nowadays, cruises are going toward a more casual dining experience, like the Hawaiian Cruise. “It’s called freestyle cruising and creates a more
Don’t bother packing a hairdryer or iron. “Hairdryers can be found practically in every hotel and on every cruise line,” says Nuzum. “Airlines are very

strict on luggage weight. Pack iron-free clothes, so not to waste precious weight and avoid increased luggage fees for the trip out or back.” Do be adventurous. “Pick
www.ValueNews.com activities that stretch your comfort level, regardless of age,” says Judd-Jenkins. “It’s these activities that build confidence, stretch boundaries and make the best memories to tell and tell again back home.” Don’t bring your stress. Hawaiian’s don’t do anything in a hurry. “Their motto is hang loose,” says Nuzum. “Everything is slow and easy, no worries. When traveling, take the opportunity to walk slower, breathe deeper, relax and leave your worries at home.” Do bring elastic waist “buffet” pants. Cruises are known for their endless buffets. “There are breakfast buffets, lunch buffets, after lunch buffets, dinner buffets and even midnight buffets,” says Nuzum. “Give yourself a break and plan to loosen the belt loops.” Don’t forget snacks and layered clothing for the plane. Depending on where you depart, flight times to Hawaii vary and airlines are serving fewer complimentary snacks or meals. “After you pass security, you can pick up food and drink from a wide variety of airport restaurants and take them on the plane,” says Nuzum. “Once you get on the plane your choices are limited and you will probably pay a pretty penny for a basic sandwich.” Judd-Jenkins recommends layering clothes on travel day, to be prepared for various temperatures on the plane. “You can be cold one minute, hot the next,” she says. TTrick Out Your Truck Bob Hurley Performance Center has lots of accessory options for your truck or car.
By Duane Blankenship Jeff Leslie is the Bob Hurley Ford Performance Center accessories manager and is known by friends and fellow employees as the “The Accessories Guru.” Jeff has been in the performance accessories business for years and came to Bob Hurley Ford two
years ago. He was hired to start up Hurley’s Performance Center, but they had no idea the department would grow so much in such a short while. Jeff is assisted by Kori Hurley and, as Jeff put it, “Kori hit the ground running. She works hard and is
eagerly learning the performance parts and accessories business. She is an asset to our team.” “We specialize in accessories for Ford and GMC products, but we also accessorize other makes and models,” said Jeff. Although a high percentage of the work

they do is on trucks, the Performance Center has “head to toe” accessories for most vehicles. When you buy a new or used truck, the shop can add custom accessories to match your type of work or style. Some items they install include DVDs, leather upgrades (cars and trucks), auto start systems, window tinting, spray-in bed liners, Weather-Tech custom mats, grill guards, brush guards, fender well splash guards, window shades, wheels, tires, power tonneau covers, trailer hitches, goose neck hitches, and much, much more. Most accessories bolt on to your truck, are safe, and are covered by warranty. What’s the first thing most of us do when we buy a new truck? We arrange for a spray-in bed liner, and we have the windows tinted. Jeff says Bob Hurley not only has the number one spray-in bed liner in the state, but is the only shop in Tulsa applying the Vortex product. This system creates a highimpact, durable, and insulated surface to the bed of any truck. The Performance Center has a window tinting bay that can stage up to six vehicles at a time. “We spray the bed with a Vortex Liner and tint the windows of every new or used truck we sell,” says Jeff. “The total amount of your accessory package can be added to your monthly vehicle payments.” And the accessories you order are installed at the Bob Hurley facility. The really nice thing about having your vehicle accessorized
by the Bob Hurley Ford Performance Center is that the entire delivered package is warranted by either Ford or Bob Hurley Ford. “Our shop has the best equipment in town, the best facility in town, and everything we sell is covered by one of the best warranties in the business,” said Jeff. “And our products and services are very competitively priced.” As the Performance Center continues to grow and expand, they will be looking for additional talented, experienced employees that would like to grow with them. “It’s another way the Hurley family can give back to the community,” says Jeff. “They enjoy providing great employment opportunities in the Tulsa community.” Bob Hurley Ford is family owned and operated. Bob Hurley Ford has plans for a new accessories super store and showroom in the near future. Keep your eyes open for the announcement. Jeff and Kori invite you to drop in to get acquainted and look over the Performance Center. They both take a lot of pride in everything they do.

On Tuesday, October 16 will be the monthly book discussion club, held in the Tulsa Garden Center Library from noon to 1 p.m. The book club is free and open to the public. This month’s book is “Trowel and Error: Over 700 Tips, Remedies and Shortcuts for the Gardener” by Sharon Lovejoy. Ever since she was old enough to help her grandmother in the garden, Sharon Lovejoy has spent her life working with plants, and along the way, through “trowel and error,” she accumulated hundreds of remedies, tips, shortcuts, and cure-alls. “Trowel and Error” collects all of her homespun garden advice into an inviting, whimsically illustrated yet helpful book. Every third Thursday of the month, the Brown Bag Lecture Series is held at Tulsa Garden Center. It is from noon to 1 p.m. and is open and free to the public. Feel free to bring your lunch! On Thursday, October 18, Kym Roberts-Hardesty will discuss animal rescue and why it’s important. October 20-21, Green Country Bonsai Society presents
their annual fall exhibition of miniature trees by local bonsai artists at the Tulsa Garden Center. Show hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Members will present demonstrations on how to create your own bonsai from common nursery material. The Tulsa Calligraphy Guild will host a workshop, “Artful Sketchbook Journaling” presented by Janet Takahashi, at the Garden Center October 26-28. Workshops are discounted for Calligraphy Guild Members, but even if you are not a member, they’d still love to have you at the workshop. Products come in 20 vibrant colors, and each one is environmentally friendly. “The reason Breezesta feels stronger and sturdier,” says Josh, “is because it is.” The material is maintenance-free poly lumber and is tough, durable and
guaranteed against twisting. “Each piece of furniture carries a residential lifetime warranty against cracking, splintering, chipping, peeling, rotting and pest infestation.” Summer’s almost over and fall is one of the most enjoyable times to be outdoors in Oklahoma, whether you’re entertaining family and friends in the backyard or tailgating prior to your favorite football team taking
surgery, these issues began to disappear and I was able to stop taking many of the prescriptions I had taken for years. Throughout my lifetime I had tried every diet plan and weight loss medication I could get my hands on, hoping something would work! I had finally convinced myself that my metabolism was shot and weight loss was not going to happen for me. When I met Dr. Atkins at the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma, I was immediately impressed with the positive encouragement I received there. Dr. Atkins gave me the hope that Lap-Band® surgery would work
for me, and it has! Dr. Atkins and his staff are knowledgeable about the Lap-Band® Adjustable Gastric Banding System. The care and commitment they have shown during my follow-up visits has been tremendous. I look forward to each office visit, not only to see my weight loss progress, but also to hear the words of encouragement from Dr. Atkins’s nurses, Euphamia and Gay Lynn. They are my weight loss cheerleaders! Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator for the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahoma, walked me through the first steps before and
after surgery, and she continues to be available to answer any questions I have. I am still on my weight loss journey but I am so thrilled that the 81 pounds that I have lost so far are gone forever! Success is a reality for me now. The Lap-Band® Adjustable Gastric Band is a “tool” that I will use for the rest of my life to help me continue to easily eat less and be completely satisfied with smaller meal choices. For the first time in my life, I know that I will be able to reach my weight loss goal and even more exciting is that I am confident that I will be able to maintain my weight loss efforts.”
Go Nuts on Route 66 The Nut House will host its yearly Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “Fun Fest” is an apt description of this event, as it will be filled with color and creativity, with handmade crafts, fall themed activities, local music by Bethany Grace & Gypsy Soul and Klondike5 String Band, and tasty food, making it a celebration for all ages. This year’s craft show promises to be bigger than ever, giving local artisans a chance to display authentic, handmade goods and other “Made in Oklahoma” items of interest. In the spirit of keeping history and tradition, Hazel has invited a local weaver to demonstrate how she spins her own yarn on a loom. The Nut House is still accepting vendor applications and will continue to do so up until the week of the event, as long as space is still available. Since this autumn festival is held so close to autumn’s signature holiday – Halloween – The Nut House will feature plenty of events inspired by this date, including face painting, pumpkin painting, and a costume contest. The age range for the costume contest is birth to 12 years, with judging held at 2 p.m., and any theme is welcome. “Last year, we had everything from a bumble bee to a vampire,” Hazel recalls. “It was a lot of fun.” Great food is always available at the Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest, with Hot Mama’s Deli offering its usual line of goodies: sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats and Amish cheeses, homemade broccoli salad, cookies, cupcakes and much more – and of course, homemade pecan pie! This will be the fourth year The Nut House has hosted this festival. For many years, the Pecan Festival was held in Okmulgee, but in 2009, when Hazel heard it would be discontinued, she welcomed the opportunity to continue the tradition. She added the reference to

Don’t Wait to Solve Your Weight Problem Jones shares her story: “I am a weight loss work in progress! I am finally having success, and I am headed toward my weight loss goal thanks to Lap-Band surgery. I had my Lap-Band® surgery a little over a year ago, on April 27, 2011 at the Lap-Band Center of Oklahoma. I have lost 81 pounds so far. My bariatric surgeon was Dr. Ladd Atkins. The decision to have the surgery was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Route 66, not only because of The Nut House’s location, but because she is committed to preserving the memory of this strip of highway that is such an integral part of Oklahoma’s history. “Oklahoma had 400 miles of Highway 66, more than any of the seven states it ran through,” Hazel notes. “It was the first highway to run from the Midwest to California – and there are still bits and pieces of the old road bed to be found across the state.” In the spirit of tradition, a good friend of the family, Delbert Tygart, allowed Hazel’s husband, Darryl, to attach The Nut House’s Route 66 emblem to his restored 1966 Chevy Impala Super Sport. The car recently represented The Nut House at the 2012 Hot Rod Power Tour and will make an appearance at the Route 66 Pecan and Fun Fest. “Both this car and Route 66 are reminders of a simpler time,” says Hazel. “We want to honor that.” Festival sponsors are Champion Refuse, Midwest Crane Services, Suburban Chevrolet, Bank of Commerce and Turf/Land Equipment.

GGreat Family Fun for Halloween
The Castle of Muskogee has everything from not scary to really, really scary! By John Owen Expect some different twists, turns and surprises at the 2012 Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee. Ten great Halloween events, one incredible location: 3400 West Fern Mountain Road in Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park! You’ll find thrills for the entire family, both inside and outside the Castle, located a short 35-minute drive from Tulsa on the Muskogee Turnpike. Halloween Village is the place where everyone experiences the very best of Halloween – ghost stories, hot and cold food and drinks, games and dancing to great music in the DJ Tent. Parking and admission to The Halloween Village is free. The Pumpkin Kingdom is child-friendly with a hayride through the village to pick out that special pumpkin, plus a petting zoo and bounce houses. For the most courageous souls, try a walk through the woods along the Trail of Blood where the lost souls of those
who have gone before will guide you; the Torture Chamber shows you what really happened in medieval times in the depths of the dungeons; Casa Morte is a labyrinth through the 12th-century Castle with doom and mystery around every corner; Domus Horrificus takes you to the areas where your favorite horror monsters dwell; and the Ultimate Maze, where most of you will find your way, the rest of you, well… For the weak at heart, there’s always the Haunted Hayride, a trip that’s sure to keep you on your toes as you ride through the Halloween Festival grounds; the Enchanted Boardwalk is your chance to stroll on the boardwalk filled with Halloween inflatables; the Pirate Ship Stage brings you a chance to experience the Magic of Matthew VanZee and the Comedy Juggling of the Jester Rejects, as well as Mark Logsdon the Escapologist and the Raks Al Hassana Mummy Dancers on The Chess Board Stage and the music and comedy
of EznDill on The Cave Stage. For the little ones 8 years of age and under, the Halloween Festival hosts Halloween Land – a carnival of kid-friendly delights with a safe “trick or treat” zone, games, face painting, treats and prizes with absolutely no scares! Tickets must be purchased for events and prices range from $2 to $10. Advanced tickets may be purchased any non-festival day up to October 25. Go to www.OKCastle.com to check out discount tickets and combos. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Haunted Castle of Muskogee is open Fridays and Saturdays, September 28 through October 27. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Halloween Land is open 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.)

AArt on Main The premier art festival in Jenks returns Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. By Sheryl Sowell The 9th annual Art on Main will be held Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Jenks. A variety of art mediums will be on display and available for purchase, including pottery, oil paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, drawings, glass, mixed media, watercolors, fiber, photography, metal smith, woodcarving and more. The family-friendly event also includes live entertainment, artist demonstrations, children’s activities and a variety of food vendors. Callie McCurdy, communications intern at the Jenks Chamber of Commerce, has attended Art on Main for the past several years, and she is excited to be helping organize the event for the first time. Callie grew up in Jenks and graduated from Jenks High School. She will graduate from Northeastern State University next May with a degree in marketing and is thrilled to be serving her senior internship at her hometown’s chamber. “Art on Main has always been one of my favorite events in Jenks, and I’m so happy to be able to be a
part of making it happen this year,” says Callie. The juried panel consisted of local artists in the community who selected 100 talented artists for Art on Main. The mission of this signature art show is to create access to a broad array of arts experiences, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in Oklahoma. A change to this year’s setup is that all artist booths will be centered down Main Street in downtown Jenks. “This will allow a more engaging experience, as festival-goers will be able to also visit the many great antiques stores and shops along Main Street,” says Callie. Another new addition is a section specifically for art students from Oral Roberts University to display their works. Live entertainment and art demonstrations, including pottery demonstrations, will be held throughout the day. This year’s children’s section will feature Bounce Pro inflatables, face painting, and
lots of arts and crafts. Organizations with booths for kids include local churches and the Jenks High School Art Club. This type of drawing together of people in the community earned Art on Main the 2009 Outstanding Community Initiative Award, presented by the Oklahoma Community Institute. Since then, word has traveled throughout the state that Art on Main is a premier art and family festival. As many as 10,000 to 12,000 people attend each year from all across Oklahoma and surrounding states. The 2012 Art on Main presenting sponsors are PSO, Tulsa Winch, and Tulsa Federal Credit Union. Admission to the event is free. For more information, search “Jenks’ Art on Main” on Facebook, or visit

TThe Stain Doctors Impressive Design Concepts offers a prescription for your stained concrete ailments. By Sheryl Sowell Do you have a real stain problem? The Pinsons, owners of Impressive Design Concepts, see it all the time – homeowners attempting to restain or reseal stained concrete projects that have faded, cracked, chipped or peeled. Impressive Design Concepts says, “Stop! Let us provide you with a professional solution to your stain problem.” The Pinsons explain that with the new technology available, you don’t have to use stains, acid washing or other “old school” ways of making your concrete look incredible. “We are the stain doctors, offering a remedy for your stain problem. We specialize in removing unsightly and damaged stain and applying new technologies that are UV resistant, environmentally friendly, have a long life span, and produce outstanding results.” The stain doctors use advanced technological products and techniques to achieve superior stain results that can outlast any stain application currently on the market. “Whether you are an existing or new stain customer, we highly recommend
A driveway completed using Impressive Design techniques. you call the stain doctors before you stain or attempt to re-stain or reseal an existing project. We can help you avoid the costly problems and headache associated with your stain.” Impressive Design Concepts uses superior dye products for your concrete that do not
require acid washing or dilution, can be used indoors and outdoors, dry within five to ten minutes, and can be mixed for a variation of colors. “We offer 17 colors that can be used alone or mixed to create a mirage of colors.” They offer custom designs and one-of-a-kind patterns for
your projects, allowing for a unique and distinctive appearance. They can also customize your concrete area with a logo of your choice, such as a sports team, college or company logo. “We can duplicate stain patterns and designs that are superior to any current stain application on the market.” The dyes are a permanent application and solvent resistant. They will not fade and deteriorate like stains do. Larry Pinson said the key to a good stain project is preparation and sealing. Without these two very important steps, your stain project will more than likely have a disastrous effect. Impressive Design Concepts can take any stained concrete project – driveways, porches, patios, walkways, living rooms, offices, kitchens, pool decks, garage floors, basements, and more – and transform it into a beautiful area that will last for many years to come. Combined with being low-maintenance, environmentally friendly, durable in high traffic areas, and aesthetically appealing, the attractive cost makes this process a must-have.
Page 33
Impressive Design Concepts aims to go above and beyond to help clients and uphold a standard of excellence. Attention and service to their customers is not the only unique feature of the company; it is also the products, which are of an industrial and commercial grade and not sold in your local hardware stores, paint stores, or construction supply stores. These products must be installed by trained certified installers. “The system we use has a national reputation for superior results.” Most exterior jobs can be completed in as little as two to four days, depending on climatic conditions and customers’ choices. Garages can be completed in as little as one to two days. Stem walls, color choices and moving personal affects and replacing those items when finished are included in the quote. If you are a homeowner or business looking for an answer for distinctive flooring, or repairing or enriching existing stained concrete, you have a professional solution. HHip to a Pain-Free Life Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living without pain after a total hip replacement from Dr. LaButti. By Lorrie Ward Many people think joint replacements are only necessary in one’s later years, when joints begin to show signs of a lifetime of wear and tear. But joints can be irreparably damaged at any age. Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living proof. “I was in my 30s when I injured my hip in a softball game,” Mike recounts. “The injury left me with constant pain and a bad limp.” When these two things did not go away, Mike visited a doctor and had an MRI, which revealed a grim prognosis: that he would eventually need to have a hip replacement. “I put up with the problem for several years,” says Mike, who relates that things became so bad, he was taking 20 to 30 aspirin a day just to be able to function and sleep. “Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore.” Mike had seen advertisements for Dr. Ronald LaButti and decided to call for a consultation last summer. “I already knew what he would tell me – that I needed the hip replaced,” said Mike. “But I really appreciated that he was upfront and straightforward with me right from the beginning, and didn’t try to force
anything on me.” Once Mike decided on surgery as his best option, Dr. LaButti relayed exactly what he could anticipate during his experience, from how much time off work he would require to how much pain he could expect during recovery. “He was honest
with me about the pain that would come afterwards,” Mike said. “But he said the outcome would be better.” And it was. For Mike, some results were immediate. “I remember waking up in the hospital,” he says, “and noticing right away that the nagging pain
in my groin and hip I’d been living with for years was gone.” Dr. LaButti had predicted anywhere from six to twelve weeks off work, and Mike returned to the job in seven. When he did, his employees observed the amazing changes. “Everyone noticed my limp was gone,” he
recalls. “Now they all say I walk faster than anyone in the shop – and I don’t have to pull myself up and down the stairs like I did before, either.” It has been a little over a year since his surgery, and Mike now embraces a whole range of activities that were impossible before, both major and seemingly minor. “I no longer have to have help putting my shoes on,” says Mike. “And I only take aspirin for headaches.” Mike purchased an above ground swimming pool to help him with rehabilitation, and he can easily get up and down the ladder, which is something he could not have done before the surgery. And best of all, he can ride a motorcycle again. “I bought a big old 900-pound bike,” he says with a grin. “There was no way I could ride before or even hold it up.” Now that he’s become accustomed to a normal existence again, Mike wonders why he put off the surgery for so long. “I tell people, ‘If you’re having pain, don’t wait so many years and let it deteriorate like I did,’” he says. “I should have visited Dr. LaButti a lot sooner. My life is so much better now.”
