Don’t Suffer from Garage Door Grief
Have You Been Hurt?
Proper “springing” is critical to the function and lifespan of your garage door opener.
Attorney John Truskett focuses on personal injury and workers’ compensation cases.
By Duane Blankenship
By Sheryl Sowell
What’s more frustrating than preparing to leave the house for work or an appointment only to find that your garage door cannot be opened because the torsion spring has broken in half? You’ve probably experienced this “garage door grief” at one time or another. Chuck Billy of Assurance Overhead Doors is called upon to service a lot of garage doors with broken torsion springs that were the wrong size and specification for the job they were intended to do. “Torsion springs are critical to the operation of any garage door opener,” says Chuck. “We replace lots of broken torsion springs and motors that have worn out because they were doing more work than they were ever rated to do.” Chuck suggests going to your garage and visually (continued on page 22)

John Burgess of Tulsa underwent knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald LaButti in 2011 after over two decades of knee problems. “I was very active in high school sports,” Burgess says. “I graduated from high school in 1967 and went into the military, where there was a lot of intense training, and I stayed active in intramural sports. I didn’t have any knee problems then. After my military years, I played a lot of sports until I began to develop knee problems in the late 1980s.” Since then, Burgess has undergone two arthroscopic surgeries on each knee. “It seemed like every five years or
so, I’d have to have one or the other operated on. I finally quit playing sports around 1995 because of the knee problems.” In 2007, Burgess was informed he would probably not be able to have another arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, and would most likely have to have it replaced. “My knee pain was getting so severe that walking was becoming very difficult, and running was completely out of the question. I had tried all the over-the-counter medications I could find, but things continually worsened.” In 2011, Burgess went to see Dr. LaButti. “My supervisor had just undergone hip replacement (continued on page 22)

90 90-Day Weight Loss Challenge BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center will award prizes including a makeover, personal training, and The Liquid Face Lift to the winners of their 2013 challenge. By Lorrie Ward Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center has strong concerns over the grim outlook concerning Oklahoma’s obesity percentage, which was at an alarming rate of 31.4 percent in 2012, up from 30.4 percent just one year prior. The national obesity rate is 35.7 percent. “This is a crucial and dangerous issue, but the great thing is that this is something we can do something about.” To show faith in this last statement, BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is initiating its 2013 90-Day Weight Loss Challenge. Clients who begin the medically supervised program in January, which includes an initial visit and evaluation with lab tests, will be weighed at the beginning and end of 90 days. Winners will be determined by most pounds lost as a percentage of body weight. The three finalists will receive prizes which will include a makeover from Anna Christy’s Aveda Salon, personal training from Buster Brown, gift certificates from Legends
Bicycles and Kay’s Gifts, and The Liquid Face Lift. Weight loss is accomplished by creating new, healthy habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, increasing physical activity, and decreasing one’s consumption of sugary drinks and high energy dense, high calorie foods. Weight loss often increases one’s confidence and self esteem, but combating obesity is important for far more than cosmetic reasons. According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity is related to a whole host of health problems and diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, some cancers (including endometrial, breast and colon), high cholesterol, sleep apnea and other respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, reproductive health complications, and some mental health conditions like depression. Therefore it is no surprise that the costs of obesity reported by the CDC are staggering. For example, in 2008, it
is estimated that obesity-related health issues cost U.S. adults an approximate $147 billion, which averaged a cost of around $1,400 per obese person. With these risks and costs taken into consideration, any cost involved with entering a medically supervised weight loss program like the 90-Day Weight Loss Challenge seems minimal. One could consider this to be an investment in a happier, healthier future. As Malissa says, “As soon as people start to lose weight, their bodies start to function properly because the body is going back to where it is supposed to be, and at a healthy weight that body is likely to last longer.”

The only FDA-approved procedure to lift skin on the face and neck. Ultherapy uses the safe, time-tested energy of ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin—including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift—without disturbing the surface of the skin. Results will unfold over the course of 2-3 months with continued improvement for up to 6 months, including lifting and tightening of the skin on the neck, under the chin, along the jawline, and on the brow. Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready for surgery.

and will feature peels from the SkinMedica line of peels (with an upgrade to a Rejuvenize peel for $50 available). With a $100 reservation deposit (applicable towards the purchase of SkinMedica product packages), guests will receive a free peel (valued at $130 to $150). “We are trying to get people started on a regimen toward healthier skin,” says Kelley. “And SkinMedica is very well known in the medical and aesthetics world, so this is very exciting.” Representatives from SkinMedica will be present at the Peel Event along with nurses and aestheticians. Guests will be able to ask questions, view before and after pictures, and have multiple avenues to get different answers to guide them in their skin care process. “People want to understand not only a product’s purpose, but also its cost,” Kelley points out. “This will help them understand the value in what they are getting.” The Peel Event highlights only one of the many services offered at Emerge Medical Day Spa, and Kelley says that this will give guests a chance to tour the facility and learn about Emerge’s
other services. Emerge Medical Day Spa is staffed with physicians, nurses, massage therapists and aestheticians, all highly qualified to advise and perform procedures designed to increase health, youth and vitality in the skin. Kelley notes that often people are overwhelmed when they view Emerge’s menu and see the wide array of products and services available, but she offers a word of comfort: “Our philosophy from the beginning has been simple: Don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal – and don’t sell something a person doesn’t need.” Belinda Stewart, R.N. and medical manager at Emerge Medical Day Spa, expands on this thought by encouraging clients to focus on treating a problem that is of top priority to them and then, after visiting the spa, decide if they want to pursue other personal skin goals. “A person might come in for a massage and after touring the facility, she finds out we do lasers and peels,” Belinda says. “Her positive experience here might make her feel ready to deal with other problems, like brown spots on her nose or
face.” Belinda stresses that these ideas are initiated by the client. “We help the client set realistic expectations, and we don’t pressure them to deal with a problem that they personally are not concerned about.” This type of personal care and commitment is of top priority to the staff at Emerge Medical Day Spa. Whether you are interested in massage, laser hair removal, or skin care on varying levels (from establishing a daily regimen to chemical peels to Botox™ to dermal fillers), the staff at Emerge can help you formulate a plan to reach your goals – and if they do not feel they can satisfy your expectations, they will refer you to someone who possibly can. For your free consultation, call Emerge Medical Day Spa today and get started on the road to healthier skin.

Brides, Plan Your Day in a Weekend
Brides-to-be and their loved ones will not want to miss The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend, January 5-6, 2013.
By Sheryl Sowell Brides, grooms and their families can save time, gas, energy, confusion and money by attending The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend, January 5-6, 2013. Making your wedding decisions at the show helps eliminate dreaded phone tag or trying to get an appointment with a wedding vendor. Even email is time-consuming and can delay the immediate response a bride wants and needs. Countless brides have found that attending The Tulsa Wedding Show skips all those wasted steps, as they are able to meet directly with vendors face-to-face on the show floor. This marks the 20th year of The Tulsa Wedding Show, and many new, exciting things are happening during the weekend. The show will be held Saturday, January 5 at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center, located at 6808 S. 107th E. Ave. Visit the Venues Day will be held citywide on Sunday, January 6. “We are combining all of our experience with knowledge of the latest trends and newest products and services,” says Vicki Taylor, founder of The Tulsa Wedding Show. “The most innovative is the V.I.B. (Very Important Bride) Elite Show
Preview.” A very limited number of tickets are available for this event. A V.I.B. ticket entitles you to exclusive early admission into the show, beginning at 9 a.m., before it opens to the public. This gives brides more personal attention, and crucial first access to the exhibitors. “Some dates are really popular, and V.I.B.s can lock in their wedding date with their chosen vendors while it is still available,”
Vicki adds. Moody’s will have their custom jeweler there to answer any questions, and they are also giving away a double diamond jewelry piece to one lucky bride. Brides of Oklahoma Magazine and Moody’s Jewelry are sponsors of the V.I.B Event, and they are really rolling out the red carpet. Every V.I.B. will receive a luxe tote bag from Brides of Oklahoma with gifts

from selected vendors inside, as well as a jewelry cleaning cloth and cleaner from Moody’s. Additionally, 25 lucky brides holding V.I.B. tickets will receive an 18-inch luxurious pearl strand necklace from Moody’s. General admission brides also have the opportunity to win! Moody’s will give away pairs of pearl earrings to 100 lucky general admission brides. Every single bride who attends the show will receive a tote bag, an issue of Brides of Oklahoma Magazine, and a coupon from Moody’s for $200 off a $500+ groom’s wedding band. The show opens to the public at 11 a.m., with over 100 exhibitors including bakeries, florists, musicians, venues and much more. “The venues range from mansions to lodges to chapels to ranches,” says Vicki. “Our many vendors offer everything you need and some things you didn’t know you needed! For example, one fun idea that many couples are doing is having an ice cream buffet, with a signature ice cream flavor created specifically for the bride and groom.” A special Fashions and Trends Room is where all the bridal shops will have continuous modeling in their
Page 9
booths. The room will also showcase a tablescape display area, coordinated by Lynn Wheatley of Lasting Impressions, featuring tablescapes designed by all the top planners, decorators and florists in the Tulsa area. Another unique part of the weekend is Visit the Venues Day. It is held the day after the show, Sunday, January 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is a free, citywide open house day for wedding venues. Visit the Venues Day gives the group a chance to spend a fun day driving to each of their choice locations and touring them personally. For additional information and to purchase tickets to either the V.I.B. Elite Show Preview or The Tulsa Wedding Show, go to www.thetulsaweddingshow.com. Online V.I.B. admission is $25 or $30 at the door. General admission is $10 online or $12 at the door. Come and “Plan Your Day in a Day” (or two!) during The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend. Tons of door prizes will be given away. Complimentary shuttle service from the east side of the Target parking lot will be provided by Old Urban Trolley. Sponsors include Renaissance Hotel, Swank Audio Visuals, Simply Elegant, Brides of Oklahoma Magazine, and Moody’s. For more information, contact

Weight Loss Can Change Your Life W Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics offers weight loss surgeries for morbidly obese patients who suffer associated medical conditions due to their weight. By Sheryl Sowell Kathy Trevino had been overweight her entire life, from childhood throughout her teenage and adult years. When she had children in her late twenties, the pounds really began to pack on and her weight problem got worse and worse. By the time she was in her early forties, she weighed 262 pounds at 5’ 4”. “I had severe chronic pain in my lower back, and my physician told me that if I didn’t do something about my weight, I would be in a wheelchair by the age of 50,” says Kathy. One of Kathy’s coworkers suggested she look into weight loss surgery, and that her insurance might pay for it because it was causing her back pain. Kathy checked with her insurance company and was referred to Dr. Luis Gorospe at Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics. “I had heard about Lap-Band surgery with celebrities like Al Roker, and found out that it is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time than other weight loss surgeries. I went to Dr. Gorospe’s seminar and decided I had to nothing to lose,” says Kathy. In December of 2007, Dr. Gorospe performed Lap-Band
Kathy Trevino before and after Lap-Band surgery. surgery on Kathy, and her life hasn’t been the same since. Kathy has lost around 110 pounds and kept the weight off. “The changes in my life have been dramatic. I no longer have pain in my lower back, I can move around much better, I have so much more energy, and I’m able to see my kneecaps! There’s also the physical part – at 47, I’ve never looked better. It has changed every aspect of my life,
even for my children. I’m no longer the obese mom; I’m a normal mom.” Kathy recommends Dr. Gorospe to anyone considering weight loss surgery. “Dr. Gorospe has an excellent bedside manner, and he will actually spend time with you to go over your questions and concerns. I believe he’s not only a good doctor, but a good person.” If you are morbidly obese
Wise Water Solutions BY SHIRLEY HALL
You turn it on and it flows from your tap, easy, convenient, potable water, technologically advanced purified water wholly fit for human consumption – but is it? Despite clean water laws, our tap water continues to be contaminated with a host of pollutants – pollutants known to increase the risk of serious health conditions. Conditions amplified by the addition of chloramines -a combination of chlorine and ammonia, to our drinking water. Sounds more like something you would clean with than drink. Worldwide chlorine has been used to disinfect drinking water. Although it is far safer than the bacteria it destroys, when combined with chloramines and chlorine dioxide a powerful carcinogenic Trihalomethane (THMs) is formed. Linked to liver, kidney and nervous system disorders, THMs are formed when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring materials found in water. If you think drinking bottled water protects you from these harmful contaminants, I am the bearer of bad news. 40% of bottled water is bottled tap water.
Yes, you read correctly. Not only is 40% of bottled water tap water, bottled water may or may not have received additional filtration. An independent study done by the Environmental Working Group found arsenic, THMs and 36 other harmful pollutants hidden in bottled water. In addition, drinking from a plastic bottle is a bad idea. Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol- A or BPA, a synthetic hormone disruptor linked to learning and behavioral problems, altered immune system function, prostate and breast cancers, early puberty in both genders, and a contributor to the health risks surrounding obesity. There is, however, a way to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones.
The most economical and environmentally sound choice you and your family can make is to purchase and install a water filter in your home. Granular Carbon and Carbon Block Filters are the most common types of counter top and under counter water filters. Granular activated carbon is recognized by the EPA as the best available technology for the removal of organic chemicals such as chloramines, herbicides, pesticides and industrial chemicals. For 26 years Environmental Resources has provided water and air filtration services to Tulsa businesses and residences. Sold, installed and maintained, our filters remove a host of contaminants found in drinking water. From the tap over the kitchen and bathroom sinks to showerheads, ice machines, water coolers, refrigerators, whole house systems, whole businesses and more, our time tested water filters deliver pure, great tasting water. Today drinking filtered water is simply a health conscious thing to do. Why not let our filters make a positive change in your life?

and suffering from medical complications stemming from being overweight, surgery may be the right answer for you. With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who to see, and what surgery is right for you. To help answer these questions, Dr. Gorospe offers free weekly seminars. During the seminars, Dr. Gorospe explains the entire process from beginning to end and assists the small group of attendees in determining if they are qualified for surgery. He offers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding (i.e. the Lap-Band surgery that Kathy received), and gastric sleeve surgeries. Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries are generally preferred for patients who need to lose a very large amount of weight (between 80 and 100 pounds, with a body mass index or 40 of higher) and suffer from co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. “These surgeries change the person’s hormonal components immediately, and there is almost 100 percent
improvement of their diabetes if they are on one oral medication only. Approximately 80 percent of patients who were on high blood pressure medications no longer need their meds after these surgeries,” explains Dr. Gorospe. “Lap-Band surgery is typically for those who need to lose a smaller amount of weight, who are approximately 50 pounds overweight with a BMI of 30 to 34.” Dr. Gorospe says the best part of his job is seeing the incredible changes that take place in his patients’ lives. “Before the surgery, many of my patients are depressed, hate their relationship with food, and are tired all time. When they lose the weight, their lives are prolonged and their quality of life is greatly improved. Their relationships with loved ones are better, and they’re able to do things they’ve never been able to before. It’s very gratifying to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives.” For more information about Dr. Gorospe’s upcoming seminars, contact Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics at (918) 252-2800.

HHelp Finding the Right Homes for Seniors Assisted Transition provides free senior living and referral services for the greater Tulsa area. By Sheryl Sowell Do you have an elderly loved one – perhaps your mother, father or a grandparent – whose current home is no longer the best place to live? The reasons for needing to transition into an independent living community, residential care home, assisted living facility or nursing home are vast and may include declining physical or mental health, lack of a support system available in case of emergency, or inability to take care of home maintenance needs. “Many people realize, ‘This is what we need to do,’ but they’re unsure exactly how to go about it,” says Michelle Brown, co-owner of Assisted Transition with Mark Smith. “Our services are geared toward families that have planned ahead and are prepared for the change, but need help in finding the right home for their loved one.” Assisted Transition offers free senior living placement and referral services for the greater Tulsa area. “We are able to assist families in finding the right assisted living community, independent living community, residential care home, nursing home, home care provider, or memory support/Alzheimer’s
community for their loved one’s needs,” explains Michelle, a registered nurse with a specialty in home health. “We are also able to help find the right respite short-term stay and hospice care.” All services are provided at no cost. A meeting is scheduled between either Michelle or Mark and the senior and their family, either at the Assisted Transition office or at the person’s home. “We assess their situation and match their needs and wants with what is available in the community,” says Michelle. “Factors may include price, geographic location, services available, environment of the facility, and much more. As a registered nurse for 28 years, I am also able to read between the lines and provide insight into the senior’s needs that the family may not be aware of.” After the initial meeting to establish the senior’s needs and preferences, Mark or Michelle will narrow down the choices available and personally tour and evaluate the facilities. Upon determining the best options available, they will personally drive the senior and family to
the best matched locations for a guided tour. Once a selection has been made and the person moved to the right facility, they follow up to ensure that all expectations have been met. Co-owner Mark Smith wishes he’d had access to this service when it was time for his father, who had Alzheimer’s disease, to move out of his home. “He was a wanderer, and we unknowingly placed him in a home that was not able to care for his needs. He was only there for a very short time before we had to move him again. In addition to the distress, we were out several thousand dollars. If I had been given some advice like Assisted Transition offers, this situation could have been avoided.” Assisted Transition also works with the VA to assist veterans in making sure they receive their full benefits. This service is especially close to Mark’s heart, as he is a veteran of the Aviation Branch of the United States Army. Michelle and Mark truly care about seniors in our community and want to provide families the resources they need to make the transition as
Michelle Brown and Mark Smith, owners of Assisted Transition. comfortable as possible. “This is a difficult and confusing time for families, and our goal is to make this change easier and less stressful for everyone involved, with personalized, compassionate, selfless service,” says Michelle. Cotton Cottage in Claremore can help with New Year’s resolutions to finish those sewing projects in your craft room.
By Cassie Woods In August of last year, Jan Bemies decided to turn a longtime hobby into a business when she opened Claremore’s only specialty fabric store, on the corner of Blue Starr Drive and Davis Avenue. The semi-retired child care administrator and her daughter-in-law, Tammy Bemies, had been discussing starting the venture for a while. While driving around Claremore one day after dropping her children off at Claremore Christian School, Tammy found the little white house now referred to as the Cotton Cottage. “We have been very lucky,” said Jan. “The owners of the property were phenomenal during the start-up process. They completed all the upgrades we needed and helped with the remodel of the house. They truly were instrumental in helping get the place open for business.” And since they opened five months ago, they haven’t stopped going. Jan and Tammy are continually looking for ways to offer their customers personalized service. “We make a great team because we work so well together and balance each other out,” said Jan. “I do all the quilting, and Tammy handles the garments
Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law team Jan and Tammy Bemies show off some of the fabrics available at Cotton Cottage in Claremore.
and décor. She has a wonderful eye for color and is very creative.” Stacked floor to ceiling, Cotton Cottage has a very large selection of quality, name-brand fabrics. Some of their most popular brands include Red Rooster, Amy Butler, Free Spirit, Blue Hill, Hoffman and RJR. As the store’s name suggests, all of their fabrics are 100 percent cotton, and they carry a wide range of colors and styles including solids, prints, florals and children’s designs. They also carry some unique character prints such as Route 66 and John Deere. If you are looking for a specific color or design that may not be in stock, the staff at Cotton Cottage can special order based on supplier availability. In addition to great, brandname quilting and dress fabrics, Cotton Cottage also sells laminated cotton that can be used for making waterproof creations like raincoats, bags and lunch bags. They also have a good line of flannels in stock and carry patterns, notions and fat quarters. “If you’re a quilter, you know what fat quarters are and we have a great selection at a good price,” said Jan. “All of our fat quarters are high quality and
all are priced at $1.99.” The Cotton Cottage is also home to a long-arm quilting machine. If a customer creates the quilt and needs to have it sandwiched together, they can have it done in house starting at one cent per inch plus a $10 set up fee. They also do a little bit of specialized embroidery and can create some garments. “We want to get the word out – whether you want to make a nice garment or complete a large-scale quilting project, we can help you,” said Jan. “As we grow, we will continue to add services that cater to the needs of our customers, and we look forward to growing this business and establishing a good customer base by providing quality products and customer service.” Cotton Cottage is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Don’t Suffer from Garage Door Grief checking the door’s spring or springs. “Any garage door that is wider than 12 feet should utilize two springs,” he explains. Double doors are extremely heavy, and a single spring is not adequate to open and close the door. If you have a double door with a single spring that breaks, you probably won’t be able to open the door. If your double door has two torsion springs and one breaks, you should still be able to open the door. If you ever decide to replace a torsion spring yourself, be extremely careful and be sure you know what you’re doing before attempting the replacement. This is one job that is best left to professionals like Chuck Billy and his crew at Assurance Overhead Doors. If an incorrect torsion spring is installed, not only may the door not open as smoothly as it should, but the door
opener usually wears out prematurely due to an overburdening workload. Assurance Overhead Doors will service any brand or model of garage door opener. “We carry the largest selection of torsion springs on our trucks than anyone in the area,” says Chuck, “and we won’t make a replacement until we have the torsion spring recommended for your system.” “Our doors are made in Ponca City, Oklahoma, by Mid-America Door®. Each two-car door comes standard with a dual torsion-spring system,” says Chuck. Mid-America Door was founded in 1991 and manufactures steel sectional overhead doors. The founders had a combination of vision, a thoughtful planning process, and many collective years of overhead door experience. Mid-America Door has seen continuous growth and has expanded its product line and production capaci-

Assurance Overhead Doors is an authorized dealer for LiftMaster®, garage door openers made by the Chamberlain Group, Inc. Both the Model 8550 and Model 8360 come highly recommended by Chuck and his crew. The units have DC battery backup, belt drive systems, and are extremely quiet and virtually maintenance-free. They are revolutionary state-of-the-art designs that have all the quality, features and benefits you can imagine in a garage door opener. They even have a “timer-to-close” feature that automatically closes your garage door in case you forget to do it. And you determine the number of minutes it takes for the door to close by presetting it from
Have You Been Hurt? know your legal rights and consult an attorney in these circumstances. If you’ve experienced some type of injury – personal, traumatic, motor vehicle or at work – and are in need of an attorney, you could take a chance and scour the phone book, where you’ll find an overwhelming selection of general practice lawyers. Or you could call someone who focuses exclusively on these types of injuries and who is focused on his clients’ best interests at all times. According to Attorney and Counselor at Law John Truskett, his practice stands apart from other law firms for two main reasons. Number one, Truskett concentrates solely on injury cases. Number two, he genuinely cares about helping people and getting them the compensation they deserve. Truskett Law is available for victims of a variety of injuries, including motor vehicle crashes, slip and fall incidents, pedestrian and bicycle accidents, wrong-

ful death, workers’ compensation injuries and more. Mr. Truskett exclusively practices injury law and has instructed other attorneys on the subject at the request of the Oklahoma Bar Association. With his specific focus and extensive knowledge of injury law, he has been successful in achieving desirable results for his clients over the past several years. Unfortunately numerous individuals have had bad experiences with lawyers who did not seem to have their best interests in mind. John assures his clients that this is not the case with him; he believes in the old adage ‘what goes around comes around.’ “I became an attorney to help people. Personal service and helping my clients achieve the best possible outcome in their case is the cornerstone of my practice. I return my clients’ calls as soon as I can, and I give them my personal cell phone number for when they need to contact me,” says John. “My practice was built on
Knee Pain No More surgery, and he was very pleased with his results. He recommended Dr. LaButti to me.” Dr. LaButti recommended knee replacement, and Burgess had the surgery done on his right knee. “By then, I was in constant pain. Walking was very difficult, and I had developed a severe limp. Sleeping had become an on-again, off-again experience every day. I was to the point where I would either have to have the surgery or retire – and I’m too young to retire.” Burgess’s surgery went well, he says. “The nurses and therapists at the hospital had me up and walking with a walker the day of the surgery. After a couple days in the hospital, I was released, and then I had home therapy for a week. Aside from the swelling in my knee, I never really experienced any pain from the surgery.” Burgess was on the walker for two weeks, then a cane for two more. “After four weeks, I was walking without the cane,” Burgess says. “After five, I was driving my car and riding my motorcycle. After six, I was dancing.” After seven, Dr. LaButti released him to work without restriction. “At week seven, when I began outpatient rehabilitation,

word of mouth and referrals from satisfied clients who will attest that my primary goal is to do what is best for your situation.” John Truskett has the experience and knowledge to help people receive the compensation they legally deserve. He graduated from the University of Tulsa College of Law in 2004. There he served as editor of the law review journal, in which he was also published. Upon obtaining his juris doctorate, Truskett worked for large corporations and insurance companies for a few years, experiences which provided him valuable insight into the techniques used by these organizations. “My familiarity with insurance companies has given me the knowledge of how they operate and what needs to happen for an injured person to be properly compensated, in the most efficient and timely manner possible.” John has worked to resolve cases ranging from modest small claims matters to
million-dollar lawsuits, and he has experience both prosecuting and defending cases. With extensive knowledge, education, and experience in the practice of law throughout Oklahoma, John has the qualifications you are looking for in a lawyer. It is also apparent from his genuine and friendly demeanor that he truly cares about the clients he serves. I was told that I would need at least 115 degrees of movement before I could stop. On my first day, I had 130.” And, Burgess says, he is now free of limitations. But, he adds, he wishes he hadn’t waited. “I waited because I didn’t want to go through it more than once and I had been told that the replacement knee would only last 10 or 15 years. But I wish I hadn’t, because the surgery was no problem. Once the swelling went down, I was able to get back to normal; everything else was just walking and exercise. I’ve had no problems with the new knee, and would readily recommend knee replacement by Dr. LaButti to anyone needing the procedure.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com.

SSpeaking with Faith
Christian author Carol Round encourages women in their personal and spiritual growth through group events.
By Lorrie Ward Christian author Carol Round always tells people, “If you had told me when I was younger that I would be speaking in front of large groups of my peers, I would have replied, 'I don't think so!'” The only ‘C’ Carol ever made in college was in speech class. “I was so nervous, I would grip the podium with sweating hands. So I tell people now, ‘God really does have a sense of humor.’” No one is more surprised than Carol when she looks over the events of the last year and realizes that she has not only spoken on several occasions in front of large groups of women, but has been interviewed on numerous radio stations across the U.S. and appeared on Christian television programs, including stations in Atlanta, Georgia and Santa Fe, New Mexico. "When I first received requests to speak, I was nervous and wasn't sure I could do it," says Carol. "However, my pastor said, 'Carol, God doesn't call the equipped; he equips the called.' He was telling me to trust God and keep my eyes on Him." Carol’s speaking topics are based on her writing, which, unlike speaking, she has always
been completely comfortable with because she has loved to read and write since she was a little girl. Her first speaking engagement came about in 2007 when she was asked to speak to a local church group in response to her self-syndicated column, “A Matter of Faith,” which runs in 12 Oklahoma newspapers (including “Claremore Daily Progress”) and is featured in an internationally-read online newspaper. She began doing small group sessions on the topic of prayer journaling and was asked at every session, “Do you have a book?” With writing as her first love, Carol did not have to be urged very strongly to produce what her listeners were asking for: "Journaling with Jesus: How to Draw Closer to God." After receiving more requests to speak, she published a companion workbook to help women put the principles learned in "Journaling with Jesus" to practical use for themselves. Her workbook, "The 40Day Challenge," is her fourth book. She has also authored "A Matter of Faith" and "Faith Matters," both compilations of her weekly column, which can be
used as daily devotionals. Her fifth book, "by FAITH alone," another collection of her columns, was released in November. With these completed projects under her belt, Carol has received even more requests to speak at women’s events, and her audiences continue to grow in size. Her topics are designed to aid women in their personal and spiritual growth, with such seminar titles as “Journaling with Jesus,” “Perfecting your Personality,” and “Sharing your Faith Story.” Carol often incorporates humor into her writing and speaking, which is evidenced by other speech titles: “Are You a Worry Wart?,” “I’m not Martha Stewart,” and “Don’t Look at Your Butt in the Dressing Room Mirror.” “I want to encourage other women,” says Carol. "We live in a broken, confusing world. If we allow the media to dominate our lives with all the negative news, we could easily just give up." This call to encourage others was what helped Carol to not only overcome her fear of speaking to her peers, but to actually enjoy the experience.

Can’t-Miss Shows in February The Spotlight Series continues with a Valentine’s Day concert by David Phelps and “Shrek the Musical” on February 17.
By Adam J. Foreman The Spotlight Series at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center continues to bring worldclass entertainment to Broken Arrow. In February, two very unique shows keep the series going. On Thursday, February 14, David Phelps is back in action for a third time by popular demand, making it the perfect destination for that Valentine’s date. And on Sunday, February 17, travel to a magical land of fairy tales and colorful characters as “Shrek the Musical” comes swinging into town. Both shows are brought to the BAPAC by AVB Bank,
Broken Arrow Convention and Visitors Bureau, First National Bank of Broken Arrow and TTCU The Credit Union. For more than a decade, David Phelps has honed that ability to identify and deliver great songs, and it has earned him a reputation as one of the Christian industry’s most versatile voices. A graduate of Baylor University with a degree in vocal performance, Phelps gained acclaim during his eight years with the Gaither Vocal Band, before leaving to resume his solo career with a deal on Word Records. Noted as a lyric tenor

for his ability to sing in a high tessitura for sustained periods, Phelps has consistently garnered rave reviews for his three octave range. Beyond his obvious technical skill, what sets Phelps apart is the heart and emotional weight he brings to each performance. More than just a great singer, he has the ability to really connect with a lyric and convey every nuance of feeling in a great song. “Shrek the Musical” tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by a wise-cracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon, rescues a feisty princess and learns that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairy tales. “Shrek the Musical,” based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t

Furthermore, Results’ highly qualified doctors help women control the risks associated with medical treatment through the use of comprehensive family histories, which help identify any underlying health issues that may negatively impact a woman’s physical and sexual health. In addition to family histories, Results also offers genetic testing. This testing establishes food intolerances that often manifest themselves in weight loss resistance, rashes, auto immune diseases and fibromyalgia.
