The Governor’s Arts Awards is an annual event recognizing individuals and organizations whose efforts have impacted the arts in their communities or throughout the state. First awarded in 1975, the awards are presented by the governor during a special ceremony at the Oklahoma State Capitol. In a letter to AVB Bank, Governor Mary Fallin wrote: “Thank you…for supporting the arts and for making contributions that have enriched and enhanced the cultural environment of our state!” “For generations, AVB

Tulsa Urology Adds New Locations Dr. Richard Saint has expanded his offices to Tulsa and Owasso in addition to Broken Arrow.

By Duane Blankenship Richard B. Saint, M.D., F.A.C.S., is recognized as a regional authority in the field of bladder and testis cancer as well as other urological malignancies. His practice is located in the St. John Medical Office in Broken Arrow, north of the Broken Arrow Expressway at 61st Street and Elm Place. Dr. Saint also has two new offices, in the Kelly building at St. Francis South in Tulsa and in the medical office building at St. John Owasso. Dr. Saint completed his undergraduate studies, medical school internship and residency at Indiana University and was recruited to the Tulsa area, where he has practiced for the past 23 years. His specialized training was with surgeons who developed a form of urinary diversion called the Indiana Pouch. This procedure revolutionized urinary tract reconstruction for patients who had required removal of their bladder because of cancer. In 1992, Dr. Saint was the first in Oklahoma to perform a bladder replacement using the small intestine. This procedure allows patients to urinate on their own

even though they no longer have their bladder. The doctor also trained at Indiana University with surgeons and medical oncologists who were successful in making testis cancer the most curable solid organ cancer in medicine. Dr. Saint is recognized as being the most experienced surgeon in the region for both of these diseases and is highly experienced in all areas of urological oncology. Dr. Saint has welcomed Rachel Wilkinson, A.R.N.P., to his practice. As an advanced registered nurse practitioner, Ms. Wilkinson has completed graduate-level education requirements and treats patients through comprehensive history taking, physical exams, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests. To become licensed to practice, she has been nationally board certified in her area of specialty. Ms. Wilkinson has acquired the expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills, and clinical competencies for expanded practice in the field of urology. According to Dr. Saint, “There are only a handful of nurse

practitioners in the state of Oklahoma dealing exclusively with this specialty. Ms. Wilkinson’s patients absolutely love her.” Rachel Wilkinson was born and raised in Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Following completion of her prerequisites, she transferred to OU-Tulsa, where she received her bachelor of science in nursing. She earned her master of science degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She loves Oklahoma and appreciates being able to serve the wonderful citizens of our state. Two BAPS teachers will also be a part of the Symphony, Sarah Richardson and Jeff Loud. “To have all that talent residing in our city is nothing short of amazing,” said Frie. “These students and teachers will come together with their diverse backgrounds and united under the banner of wonderful Christmas music that’s near and dear to many people’s hearts.” Selections from the show will include classics from the most beloved holiday films, including “White Christmas,” “Holiday Inn,” “The Polar Express,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,”

“How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and many more. It will also be a night to pay tribute to Ralph Blane, Broken Arrow’s favorite son, who wrote “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and other Hollywood classics. Epperly’s vision for the Signature Symphony, which was founded in 1978, has been one of much experience. As an arranger/producer for Disney Corporation, he worked with legends Duke Ellington, Johnny Mathis and Count Basie. During his service as conductor of the US Army Chamber Orchestra, he performed for three administrations and international dignitaries. He came to TCC in 1995, two years before the Signature Symphony was asked to become a professional orchestra-inresidence at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center. According to Greg Lippert, president and CEO, the company has about 1,900 employees in the Tulsa area, many of whom have served in the armed forces. As part of their 50th anniversary, Mazzio’s chose to honor these employees by inviting Major Dan Rooney, founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, to speak to the company. In addition, Mazzio’s donated a percentage of each pizza sale to the Folds of Honor Foundation, beginning in mid-June of this year and lasting through August. Mazzio’s was proud to present the foundation with a check for $10,000. Major Dan Rooney founded the Folds of Honor Foundation to ensure that no family is left behind in the fight to preserve American freedom. Scholarships and other forms of assistance are given to the spouses or children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to the United States. The Selbys, family of Mazzio’s founder Ken Selby, presented the $10,000 check along with Mazzio’s manager

Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. After returning from his second tour, Major Rooney witnessed a profound situation that drove him to create the Folds of Honor Foundation. According to the Folds of Honor website, over 700,000 soldiers have been killed or disabled in the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 87 percent of the dependents affected by the recent wars do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance, meaning that over a million Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn dependents need assistance. about six weeks. During the first two weeks of her treatment, she received treatments five days a week. Jan reports that she felt a great improvement in her range of motion and comfort within the second week of treatment. From there, she alternated between two and three treatments a week until all 20 treatments had been performed. “Ebony administered treatments,” said Jan. “She was an absolute jewel – so gentle and caring. Each week she gradually increased the tension as my treatments progressed. She was always quick to ask if it was too much or too little. Because she really took the time to listen to and work with me, I never had any pain during treatments.” The therapy (which typically lasts 20 sessions) is intended to be a one-time process unless there is a re-injury or an advancement of a progressive illness. But in most cases, once is enough to have a life-changing difference. “It’s really the little things that I noticed to be the biggest differences,” said Jan. “Being able to turn my head to look over my shoulder while driving, improved range of motion in my neck, and even being able to sleep better. I used to have sinus problems that affected my sleep, and my treatment even helped to improve that.” Jan also stated that she used to feel a tingling, numb feeling down her arm every night and day that distracted her from her work or daily routine. She

reports that even though nothing in her environment has changed, since receiving the treatments, she has not had that sensation again. EEye Problems in Your Child’s Sight Primary Eye Care Associates urges parents to have their children’s eyes examined by an optometrist, rather than relying on school vision screenings. By Lorrie Ward Oftentimes people associate vision problems with aging, making the assumption that children are born with perfect vision. Numerous studies, however, contradict this notion. The American Optometric Association (AOA) estimates that “nearly 25 percent of school-age children have vision problems.” Yet, 86 percent of first-grade students have never received any type of eye exam. It should come as no surprise, then, that 60 percent of “problem learners” have vision problems that go undetected. “Eye exams for children entering school are critical for early intervention,” says Dr. Hinkle of Primary Eye Care Associates of Owasso. “This is needed to treat diseases and disorders that can lead to poor school performance and can ultimately affect a child’s quality of life.” According to Dr. Hinkle and his colleague Dr. Cash, there are certain telltale signs a child may be experiencing vision difficulty. Are his eyes or eyelids noticeably red? Does the child

Does he turn or tilt the head as if trying to focus with just one eye? Does he avoid tasks that would require a lot of visual focus, such as coloring and reading, or hand-eye coordinated activities, such as doing puzzles? If the answer to these questions is

“yes,” then the child most certainly needs an eye exam. One might ask, “But aren’t there routine vision screenings at every school?” According to studies cited by the AOA, these screenings are designed to detect potential issues, but are not comprehensive enough and are not diagnostic. “Vision screening

programs that are well-designed and properly administered in the public or private schools should be utilized to assist in the identification of children in need of care who have not had access to comprehensive examination services,” states the AOA. Vision screenings are only used to test visual acuity, while a comprehensive eye exam given by optometrists involves assessment and possible treatment of this and other problems involving binocular vision, refractive status, oculomotility, and general ocular health. The AOA also recommends assessments begin at age three, rather than waiting until the child enters school. Shelley Moody, office manager of Owasso’s Primary Eye Care Associates, provides a perfect example of the importance of early eye examination in children. “My sister couldn’t see well from the time she was born, and in school she was moved to the front of the class – where she still couldn’t see,” she recounts. “When she finally got her first pair of glasses, she told our mother she was amazed that

Helping Students Affected by MS Pursue Their Dreams Ten students in the state were awarded scholarships by the National MS Society: Oklahoma to support their educational goals.

By Brandi Moore The National Multiple Sclerosis Society: Oklahoma has announced this year’s recipients of its annual scholarship program: Taylor Aldridge, Sean Barger, Christopher Basden, Whitney Force, Colby Gibson, Alli Martin, Shelby Noland, Jessica Potter, Macayla Potter and Shelby Reeves. The annual scholarship program helps students affected by multiple sclerosis pursue a college or technical school education. It is open to high school seniors who live with MS or have a parent who does, or anybody living with MS who has not yet been to a post-secondary school. In addition to the emotional toll, MS can have a substantial financial impact on a family. The direct and indirect costs of MS, including lost wages – even for those with health insurance – are estimated at more than $70,000 annually per household. This makes funding a college education that much harder. “If I could, I would want my dad’s MS to be given to me for 10 years so he could feel good again and be given a time of rest, but I know this is not possible,” said Sean Barger, Broken Arrow

scholarship winner. “My parents have always encouraged me to complete my education so I can fulfill my goals and dreams not only for myself but for the family I hope to have one day.” “We are pleased to say that the National MS Society: Oklahoma provided 10 high school seniors with college scholarships for the 2012 school year,” said Sharleen Dupee, director of programs and services for the National MS Society: Oklahoma. “This scholarship program exists to help highly qualified students who have been diagnosed with MS or who have a parent with MS achieve their dreams of going to college.” The Society established its scholarship program nine years ago, and it immediately became a source of great encouragement for families concerned that MS might put college out of reach. This year, 409 new awards and 236 renewals totaling $1,136,175 were presented nationwide. Applications are evaluated on financial need, academic record, leadership and volunteer activities, a statement of educational and career goals, and letters of recommendation. Applicants are

also asked to provide a personal statement describing the impact MS has had on their life. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,000 and typically cover one year, although a limited number of awards may exceed this amount. “For the Barger family and the hundreds of thousands diagnosed with MS across the country, there are very few known sources of scholarship assistance specially targeted for these families,” said Dupee. “MS shouldn’t stand in the way of an education, and we are hopeful this program will give families some relief.” Information about scholarships for 2013-14 will be available on the National MS Society website on October 1, 2012. HHip, Hip, Hurray! Janean McCorkle of Broken Arrow is shouting the praises of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ron LaButti. By Joshua Danker-Dake Janean McCorkle of Broken Arrow was born in 1956 with congenital hip dislocation: her hip socket hadn’t formed correctly, so her hip bone would slide back and forth. Unable to crawl as an infant, Janean spent two years in a splint. In 2002, Janean’s knee gave out and she fell down a flight of stairs. Over the next seven years, she developed increasing pain in her right thigh and a severe limp. One of her friends had undergone knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald LaButti years before, and Janean went to him on the basis of that glowing recommendation. “Dr. LaButti ordered hip X-rays, which showed that I was bone-on-bone in my right hip,” says Janean. “He had me get a steroid injection in my right hip to see if I was a good candidate for hip replacement. That one shot took all my pain away instantly.” After the shot, Janean experienced substantially less pain, she says, and she underwent hip replacement surgery on her hip in April, 2010. “My hip

was a mess when Dr. LaButti did the operation. Bone grafting had to be done. After the surgery, I had six weeks of recuperation and then four weeks of physical therapy. Dr. LaButti had done such a good job that my physical therapist was amazed at how well I was doing. I had his notes sent to my therapist, and she said that in all her years, she had never seen such meticulous notes.” Later, arthritis caused Janean’s left hip to deteriorate, causing her thigh pain. She went back to Dr. LaButti, and in June of 2012, she had her left hip replaced. “The left wasn’t as bad as my right, and I bounced right back after the surgery, with no therapy needed,” she says. “I went back to work in just three weeks, and after both surgeries, I needed very little pain medication.” Janean is effusive in her praise for Dr. LaButti. “He gave me my life back,” she says. “I didn’t think it was possible to feel this good again. I know why people come from out of state to see him – his talent, his knowledge of new technology,

and his compassion for his patients and their families. I’ve recommended him to many people.” Janean calls herself Dr. LaButti’s poster child for total hip replacement. “I wish my mother-in-law could have gone to Dr. LaButti – she had both hips done, and after the second, she said, ‘Never again.’ She lived with post-operative pain until the day she died,” says Janean. “But Dr. LaButti is amazing – no one has to endure hip or knee pain when he’s right here in Tulsa.
