Family is a term in flux. For some, the word alludes to close relatives, and for others family is a way to describe kindred spirits. For many of us, family has grown to include the furry friends with which we share our homes and hearts. At Family Animal Medicine in Owasso, Drs. Jenny Nobles and Gena Guerriero, along with their fantastic staff, are committed to providing the community’s animals with quality medical services in a family-oriented environment. As Family Animal Medicine approaches its twoyear anniversary, Dr. Nobles and Dr. Guerriero pride themselves on the relaxed
environment and the dedication of their team. "Many of our staff members have been working together for over 10 years," Dr. Guerriero explains. "Nearly the entire team worked together at another animal hospital in Owasso, and as our visions changed, we found a new home for our work family. Since then, we have been Family Animal Medicine.” As in any family, the clinic has its share of young blood and older members. In honor of its most senior member, Wanda Cline, Family Animal Medicine is offering a Senior Animal (continued on page 24)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
The Great Escape: Your 401(k)…..Your Way! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Many folks nearing retirement begin to take a closer look at their 401(k)s. The closer to retirement, the less risk you can afford to take! In particular, the last few years before retirement it is imperative that “You make hay while the sun shines!” Employers and 401(k) plan administrators don’t advertise this fact, but most workers 59 and a half and older, and even some younger ones, can roll over 401(k) funds while they’re still working and contributing to the plan. This option isn’t right for everyone. But in some cases it can provide more attractive investment choices and much needed professional retirement planning. The law allows workers to empty their 401(k) accounts once they reach 59 and a half. They can roll all of the money into an IRA without paying taxes on it now. However, while the law permits this, employers don’t have to permit it. A survey done by the Council of America in 2006 found that 70% of companies and 89% of those with 5,000 or more employees allow in-service distributions. Here are a few reasons you may want to consider an inservice rollover: 1) If you need to escape a lousy 401(k) plan that has expensive or mediocre investments, an early rollover may be for you. 2) If you don’t have enough choices or want more choices, an in-service rollover could be for you. According to a survey done by the Council of America only about 14% of company 401(k)s offer a brokerage window that gives you access to a broad
array of stocks, bonds, and investments. 3) If you want professional help managing your retirement assets, an inservice rollover may be right for you. Many folks don’t think too much about managing their 401(k) until they get close to retirement. The closer you get, the more you are likely to need help. 4) If you want to be able to stretch your distributions out for your beneficiaries should something happen to you, an in-service rollover may be the answer. A spouse who inherits a 401(k) can roll it into their own IRA with all the flexibility that an IRA offers its original owner. However for kids, grandkids, or other non-spousal heirs some retirement plans, like 401(k)s require a lump sum distribution upon the death of the participant. That means beneficiaries have to receive the money and pay taxes on it almost immediately. If those assets were in a IRA instead, your heirs would be able to stretch their receipt of money over a much longer time, thereby maximizing the tax deferral and minimizing the income taxes owed. Like we always tell our clients, there are positives and negatives to every investment and every strategy. We want
you to know the good and the bad so you can make confident and informed decisions about your money. So before you rush out and roll your money over consider some of the reasons you may want to leave it in a 401(k). While IRAs offer significant benefits like greater flexibility and control, they do not offer the following 401(k) options: 1) You cannot borrow from an IRA, unlike a 401(k), which offers loan options. 2) Creditor protection is stronger on ERISA-protected plans like a 401(k). IRAs offer some creditor protection but it is based on state law and frequently requires you to file for bankruptcy. 3) Required Minimum Distributions don’t start in a 401(k) plan until you stop working. In an IRA, they must begin at age 70½. If you are unsure if your plan allows for an in-service rollover, stop in and visit with us. We have clients who are employees of many of the companies in the area and have helped them through this process. If we do not have a copy of the plan document for your company, we will help you with the process of acquiring one. The closer you get to retirement the more it matters how and why you hold certain investments for your retirement savings. Get informed. Who you trust matters! seen their clientele expand. Their stellar reputation for quality care and competitive prices has brought impressive growth for their hospital. In fact, business has been so good they have outgrown their current facility. But SAHO doctors have no intention of letting this cramp their style. For them, the future is right across the street. Just north of where SAHO currently resides, the practice owns 2.4 acres of land, where their brand-new hospital is being constructed. Having been formally approved for building permits, they finally received the goahead late in the summer. They will break ground this month and begin the process of constructing a new facility. "Everything is on track to be complete and open in the summer of 2014," says Dr. Kelley. The new facility will be 20,000 square feet, and represents a veterinarian’s wish list for a hospital. Among the many anticipated features of the new building, clients will be excited to know about the separate wards for dogs and cats. Every cat

owner will appreciate this, as felines are notorious for being anxious and difficult, if not ferocious, when visiting the veterinarian’s office. A nice bonus is that cats will have a play run overlooking the lobby. This should not only keep cats occupied, but will feed owners’ curiosity, as well. What could be cuter than watching cats pounce and play as you wait in the lobby? While cats will be purring for the idea of their own designated ward, doctors are excited about plans for two new surgical suites, as well as suites for radiography and ultrasound procedures. Other amenities include a full service boarding and “daycare” facility with a pool for dogs and even more play space. More and more pet owners are choosing to board their animals when they vacation, or even while they are at work. When pets are boarded at a hospital, you can rest assured that they are getting proper care and food. Plus, your pets will be happier, as they get some play time and interaction with humans (and other animals when appropriate). If your pet gets sick, staff and medical professionals are able to ensure that your furry family member gets the care they need when they need it. The most recent addition to the SAHO team is Heather Hawkins, professional dog trainer and owner of Marley’s Day Out. Over the summer, Heather joined forces with SAHO as a full time trainer, and offers puppy classes, dog

“boot camp” sessions, as well as private sessions to address specific behavior issues. “Our goal is to be able to provide everything in one place,” says Dr. Chris Kelly. “We will be able to provide boarding and daycare, veterinary medicine and surgery, grooming and training, all under one roof. We are on our way to functioning as a complete hospital to suit any need owners and pets can have.” Much of this vision is already in place at SAHO. The final step is related to physical space, comfort and aesthetics. Surely, as customers, staff and doctors watch the progress across the street, next summer cannot arrive soon enough. If you haven’t brought your dog or cat to SAHO, then make an appointment today so you can experience for yourself why the clinic has grown so quickly. SAHO is open seven days a week. at CChanges Children’s Orchard Kari Hendrix will be stepping down as store owner after three years. By Susan Erler
Life is filled with twists and turns and, sometimes, unexpected course corrections. Just when we think we are on a path to stay, suddenly we find ourselves in unchartered territory. That is exactly what Children’s Orchard owner Kari Hendrix is currently facing. Children’s Orchard, located at 12307 E. 96th St N. in Owasso, has been Kari’s passion and focus for the past three years. “I have truly loved running the store, getting to make so many friends, and helping people in the community,” says Kari. “And although I had planned to continue to spend more time working here and assisting my fabulous customers, sometimes things happen that you have no control over. And that is what has happened in my life.” Kari is facing a lifechanging situation within her family, and she needs to step away from ownership of Children’s Orchard in order to focus her full attention on her family. “I never
considered not choosing to put family first,” explains Kari. “But, it is still very hard. Hopefully this will afford someone else the opportunity that they have been praying for. I want someone to take my place that can enjoy this store as much as I have.” While Kari looks for a new owner for her store, she is quick to point out that the store is not closing. “It will be business as usual,” says Kari. “Most customers probably
won’t even notice the transition. There will still be the fantastic and personal customer service my clients have grown to expect.” Children’s Orchard spends a great deal of time working with all of their new franchise owners, and they have developed a plan that makes taking over an existing location very easy. If you or anyone you know has ever dreamed of becoming a business owner, this may be the perfect time to give it a

try. Kari is proud to say that her store boasts a high value location, and she has over $20,000 in inventory already built up. Interested parties should contact the corporate office first at 1-800-999-5437 ext. 227 and begin the process. Until the change of ownership, Kari will continue to keep things in the store as fun and exciting as always. November is always a great month at Children’s Orchard and stopping in once a week is encouraged. Kicking off the month is their holiday clothing blow out sale. Why spend hundreds on a cute outfit and accessories only to grow out of it after one wearing? Find your child’s holiday wear at reasonable prices; you might decide to splurge on two outfits instead. With cooler weather upon us, don’t waste time going to the mall in search of a winter coat for your child. Gently used and all in the latest styles, the selection at Children’s Orchard will make it easy to find exactly what you need. Accessories such as gloves, hats and scarves can be found here too, making this your one-stop, stress-free place to shop this season. As Thanksgiving approaches, avoid the craziness of discount stores by doing your Christmas shopping at Children’s Orchard. Yes, Children’s Orchard offers a giant assortment of both new and gently used toys. They will

have all the hottest items but without the hassle of afterThanksgiving shopping. What could be easier? Ask Kari how you can turn your unwanted items into store credit and see how easy it is to complete your holiday shopping without putting a dent in your bank account. It’s easy and she is happy to share her savings tips. “This is just one of the fantastic values we offer our customers,” says Kari. “I love showing them how to turn their own children’s toys and clothing in to dollars that can be used to purchase items. It’s amazing how much money you can save.” If you have a large amount of items to bring in, Kari simply asks that you call ahead and make an appointment so she can have plenty of staff on hand to get you on your way as quickly as possible. Children’s Orchard is a great way to purchase your children’s clothes, toys, and accessories, and it could be the answer to someone’s dreams of business ownership. Are you the next owner? You never know until you call. Store hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact

AAssisted Living at Its Finest The staff and facilities of Canoe Brook are geared towards providing quality care for your loved ones.
By Deanna Rebro
When a loved one needs to leave the comforts of home but does not need 24-hour complex medical supervision, Canoe Brook Assisted Living & Alzheimer’s Care Community may be the solution. In a serene and wooded atmosphere just minutes from Tulsa, Canoe Brook features 34 assisted living apartments and 38 specially equipped memory care apartments for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents. Opened in December of 2009, Canoe Brook was spearheaded by Jack Meyer, local apartment developer, and Jim Colbert is executive director. Assisted living apartments, available in three sizes, have a private key entry. Each apartment includes a kitchenette with microwave and apartment size refrigerator, and a spacious bathroom. Items that are commonly upgrades at most other facilities are standard at Canoe Brook – a ceiling fan and bolted shower chair in each apartment, plus an emergency alert bracelet in case a resident falls and cannot reach the safety
signaling devices. Those who want maximum independence can have it, explains Anthony Fleming, director of marketing and community relations. “We support and encourage the independence of our residents,” he says. Residents are free to do their laundry in easy-to-use washers and dryers, or they can have
their laundry done for them. A beauty salon and barber shop is on site. Seven common areas provide many social opportunities in relaxed and comfortable home-like settings. That includes lots of natural light throughout the facility and three ornamental fireplaces. A library, TV room, game room, crafts

room and exercise room give residents something to do any time of the day or night. Planned outside activities and transport services are also available. Three meals a day are provided to meet both nutritional needs and personal tastes. The residents make their selections from menus, so each meal is individually prepared for them. Besides an elegant dining room, a special family dining room is available for enjoying a private meal with loved ones. The meals are serviced for 90 minutes to accommodate anyone’s schedule. When care is needed, a trained staff under the direction of medical personnel is on hand 24/7. Residents enrolled in the assisted living basic plan can choose from three levels of assistive services if and when their needs or preferences change. State-of-the-art equipment keeps memory-impaired residents safe and secure. “Our focus is on quality patient care,” says Anthony. “We are very attentive to our
residents’ needs and strive to remain proactive in addressing any concerns or issues they may have.” A keypad entry and exit system is used for both the electronic gates that surround the building and the interior common areas. In addition, each resident wears a Wonder Guard monitoring bracelet to prevent wandering for even the shortest time. Basic memory impaired service and two levels of enhanced care can be provided. Canoe Brook recognizes the stress that families endure when loved ones are faced with chronic memory loss. Every month, Anthony, a certified facilitator for Alzheimer’s Support Groups through the Alzheimer’s Association and certified dementia practitioner, hosts a meeting for all family members who wish to attend. “This gives them an opportunity to share their concerns with others who are going through the same experience,” he explains. “To us, the family is just as important as the resident.”

Stop Smoking this Year for the Great American Smokeout Before you give up on giving up cigarettes, try an electronic cigarette at True Vapors.
By Christopher Davis
The Great American Smokeout, organized by the American Cancer Society, takes place on the third Thursday of every November – this year, it falls on November 21. As is common knowledge by now, smoking cigarettes poses a wide range of health risks. Aside from the many dangers of smoking, the habit
brings with it plenty more nastiness, from stained fingers to increased wrinkles and aging with a lingering smell of smoke. There are many approaches to quitting the habit, but one relatively new method is catching on quickly with smokers in Oklahoma – the electronic cigarette. Commonly referred to as an
True Vapors owner Dwight Winton (right) with staff member Wren Millard.
“E-cig,” it is a small vaporizer that heats up a mixture of liquid, nicotine and flavoring, producing a vapor that looks like smoke. Manufactures have begun developing a variety of models and styles of E-cigs and even more varieties of vapor flavors. Oklahoma is relatively ahead of the curve in America, with small stores specializing in vaporizers and accessories popping up across the state. True Vapors, located in Owasso, is one of the latest of these stores. What sets True Vapors apart from other vapor stores, aside from their great selection, is the comfort and personality of the store. For many who enter an E-cig store for their first time, the experience can be a bit intimidating. It is difficult enough to build up the courage to commit to quitting. True Vapors, staffed by a great team of ex-smokers, wants you to know they are here to help you. Dwight Winton, owner of True Vapors, recalls his experience as a smoker. “I smoked for 50 years,” Dwight says. “I had reached the point where I had quit trying to
The idea is simple. There are three main pieces to the E-cig puzzle: a battery, a vaporizer tank and the liquid. Utilizing USB adapters, you can charge your E-cig battery anywhere you can charge a cell phone. Vaporizer tanks are comprised of a heating element and small tank that holds the nicotine liquid. This liquid, sometimes referred to as “E-juice,” comes in a variety of strengths and flavors. Flavors range from tobacco to watermelon and everything in between and are available in varying strengths of nicotine, from very strong to zero nicotine. The ultimate goal of most vapers is to eventually cut down on the nicotine level until they get to zero. To be sure, vaping is not the same as smoking. But, usually within a day or so, the smoker realizes the process is working. This – along with the epiphany that you do not smell like an ashtray anymore – helps keep you motivated to quit. So, what are you waiting for? Step inside True Vapors and take your first step toward kicking the habit of smoking. You can find True Vapors on the web at www.facebook.com/truevapors-owasso. quit.” Then one day a friend showed him an E-cig he had just picked up. Soon, Dwight was taking his first trip to a small shop to pick out his first E-cig. He knew he had found something that might just help him kick the habit when, he laughs, “After ten days, I realized I hadn’t smoked a single cigarette, and I didn’t want to kill anybody.” Two years later, he has stayed cigarette-free and now owns several vapor stores across the country. Dwight proudly declares, “I can honestly tell you, now, I am done with cigarettes.” Stories like Dwight’s are common among “vapers,” as the ex-smokers are sometimes called. At True Vapors, each staff member can personally relate to that first day of selecting an E-cig, and are eager to help. Give them five or ten minutes, and they can walk you through the basics and explain the differences in models and vapor liquid selection, helping you take the step you never thought you would take again. Your anxiety about quitting will go up in smoke.

Your Holiday FFinish Shopping List Early The 14th annual Haley Palmer Memorial Craft Fair will be held Saturday, November 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Owasso 7th Grade Center, with all proceeds benefitting Make-A-Wish® Oklahoma. By Sheryl Sowell
Jennifer and Brenna Palmer at the Haley Palmer Memorial Bridge.
The 14th annual Haley Palmer Memorial Craft Fair will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Owasso 7th Grade Center at 86th Street North and Main. Over 100 vendors will be offering lots of different items to check off each person’s name on your Christmas shopping list! Owasso resident Jennifer Palmer started the craft fair 14 years ago to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Jennifer’s daughter Haley was diagnosed with CF at three months old. In 2008, at the age of 12, Haley succumbed to her battle with the disease. “We used to do several fundraisers each year, but the craft fair is the only one we have continued,” says Jennifer. “This craft fair is in loving memory of Haley. We chose to carry on this

www.ValueNews.com tradition because she always enjoyed it so much. She loved doing all of her Christmas shopping at the craft fair.” Proceeds from the 2013 Haley Palmer Memorial Craft Fair will support Make-AWish® Oklahoma, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. “Make-A-Wish is such a wonderful organization that has had a huge impact on my family, and on the lives of countless others. All donations and money raised at the craft fair go directly to Make-A-Wish,” says Jennifer. Admission to the craft fair is free, but donations are encouraged. Indoor and outdoor booths will feature a huge variety of items including vintage jewelry and furniture, homemade bath products, soy candles, mesh wreaths, burlap pillows, turned wood and more. “We will have some direct sale booths such as Pampered Chef and Scentsy, but the majority of booths will feature handcrafted items you can’t find anywhere else,” Jennifer adds. Jennifer’s daughter, Brenna, will have a booth with her popular handmade corn therapy bags that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as heating pads or cold packs to treat sore muscles. If it’s food and other tasty treats you want, you’re in luck. Chef Matt will be on
hand with his mouthwatering chicken and sausage gumbo and homemade jams, and another vendor will return with her homemade tamales (a big favorite with the crowd each year). Concessions will be offered both inside and out. The Oklahoma Nemesis Softball Team will be having a bake sale, as well. The Kids Craft Booth will offer make-and-take craft activities for the young’uns, as well as photos with Santa Claus himself. Don’t miss your chance to win over 100 items donated by vendors that will be raffled. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. You can also receive a free raffle ticket for checking in to Facebook during the event. For those interested in setting up a booth at the craft fair, contact Jennifer Palmer at (918) 636-6083 or owassocraftfair@yahoo.com to find out if booth space is space is still available. FFinally Say Goodbye to Stubborn Fat BA Med Spa now offers CoolSculpting, an innovative, non-surgical fat reduction technology with no downtime.
By Sheryl Sowell
It’s called stubborn fat for a reason; no matter how healthy you eat and how much you exercise, it can be virtually impossible to lose those persistent muffin tops, love handles and belly pooches. You’re left with two options, right? Learn to live with them, or have surgery. Wrong! The staff of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is thrilled to announce they are offering a new service for people who want to lose those annoying bumps and bulges of stubborn fat, without undergoing surgery or experiencing any
downtime. CoolSculpting® by Zeltiq is an innovative, non-surgical technology that targets and cools unwanted fat cells in a selected area to induce a noticeable, naturallooking reduction in fat. Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, no anesthesia, no surgery and no downtime. Patients often spend time reading, working on their laptops or simply relaxing while undergoing this “lunchtime” treatment.
“CoolSculpting is a 60-minute procedure, so you can do it on your lunch break, and because there is no downtime you can return to work right after,” says Malissa Spacek, managing partner of BA Med Spa. “We’re very excited to be offering this incredible technology for our patients.” Developed by Harvard scientists, this procedure uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are
frozen – your healthy cells remain healthy. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. CoolSculpting is safe, FDA-cleared and effective. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results seen after one to three months. Treatment areas may include the abdomen, upper abdomen, love handles, bra line, inner thighs and backs of thighs. “You can even treat multiple areas at one time,”
adds Malissa. CoolSculpting was featured on “The Rachael Ray Show,” as well as “The Dr. Oz Show.” Dr. Oz described the procedure as a “game changer” in the fight against fat. Examining before and after photos, he commented, “I was flabbergasted. These are huge changes.” Combined with diet and exercise, CoolSculpting is an amazing solution that eliminates the stubborn lumpiness and unwanted pockets of fat most of us can never seem to get rid of no matter how hard we try. After a few months, you will see an approximate 20 percent reduction in fat – your clothes will fit more loosely and you’ll look and feel better. How cool is that? BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center offers a variety of weight loss programs, cosmetic procedures and enhancements to give you a healthy, beautiful confidence this holiday season. SSnoring Can Be a Danger Sign Dr. Gene Drake and Dr. Jayson Voto are saving lives by screening and treating patients for sleep apnea and snoring. By Sheryl Sowell
Dr. Gene Drake and Dr. Jayson Voto from Drake & Voto Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Owasso aren’t your typical dentists. Although extremely familiar with crowns and bridges, cavities and
cosmetics, this dental practice is redefining the dental industry, one snoring patient at a time. According to the Sleep Association, over 80 percent of people remain undiagnosed with obstructive
sleep apnea (OSA), and it’s assumed more physicians would implement greater OSA screening protocols. Interestingly enough, dentists such as Dr. Drake and Dr. Voto are among the small group of

practitioners stepping up to offer Oral Appliance Therapy to treat patients for snoring and sleep apnea. With the help of technology and dental continuing education courses, Dr. Drake and Dr. Voto have established a proper sleep protocol, which includes patient screening, home sleep testing, Oral Appliance Therapy, and the use of a special screening and titration technology called the Pharyngometer and the Rhinometer. “I’ve done the restorative part of dentistry for over 34 years, but treating obstructive sleep apnea, I can say I have changed people’s lives, and this is very rewarding to me,” says Dr. Drake. Dr. Drake made his first oral appliance years ago for a patient who was nervous to fly due to her heavy snoring. “I later found out from my training that I had treated her for obstructive sleep apnea. A few months later she came back in, and not only did we cure her snoring, but she was more rested in the morning, blood pressure was down, she lost a few pounds, and she felt better than she had in a long time due to a more restful night’s sleep.” Dr. Voto and Dr. Drake have been offering treatment ever since. Physical and mental manifestations of obstructive sleep apnea include weight gain, hormonal imbalances, headaches, inability to concentrate, depression,
Page 13
hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, to name a few. Dr. Voto and Dr. Drake are using custom fabricated oral appliances to treat patients, which hold the mandible in place, allowing for oxygen to pass through without any obstructions or blockages. This technique is called Oral Appliance Therapy, and is a proven method of treatment, yielding high patient compliance rates. “I’m excited to be able to offer my help in treating such a serious and potentially life threatening condition. Not only can we improve a patient’s health, we can also greatly enhance their quality of life. People who are at risk should be tested. Our take home sleep test makes this process simple,” says Dr. Voto. If you snore, or have any of the symptoms listed, please call for an initial screening appointment. At Drake & Voto Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, the team will take singular care of you and your family during each and every visit. No matter what kind of cosmetic, preventive, or restorative dentistry you need, they aim to always go the extra mile for your smile. For more information, contact

Frustrated with your CPAP? IF SO, YOU MAY NEED A DENTAL ALTERNATIVE. If you can’t wear your CPAP because of bulkiness or discomfort, it can’t help your sleep apnea. Doctors Drake & Voto offer a comfortable and convenient alternative – a custom designed oral appliance. These appliances move the jaw forward to keep soft tissues from blocking the airway. Many of our patients report feeling better and more rested than they have in years. Schedule your sleep apnea consultation today by calling (918) 272-5381.

SStick to a Budget This Holiday Season Rachel Stephens shares her money management practices.
By Jocelyn Wood
Gift for mom and dad. Check. Presents for the girls. Check. Gift for sweetie. Check. Now, what to buy for my BFF and other closest friends? Ah, the holidays, a time when we are all too often
tempted to toss out our budgets and splurge on friends and family. It’s the season of giving, and besides, I enjoy giving gifts. So, is it possible to stay on budget without compromising my gift giving?
Rachel Stephens of Owasso suggests using the benefits of your bank to plan for holiday spending, like using a prepaid VISA card to keep you on budget.
“Yes, it is,” said Rachel Stephens, RCB Bank employee who knows a thing or two about spending wisely. “I live on a tight budget, but that doesn’t mean I skip the gifts during the holidays. I simply plan for it.” Stephens shares some of her personal money planning practices: Plan ahead. “I believe a person needs to budget ahead of a holiday shopping trip, so they don’t get caught up in the pressure to buy, buy, buy and then have to figure out how to climb out of the hole they fall in,” Stephens said. “Me personally, I use my company’s Christmas deduction plan. I choose how much money to have taken out of my check each month and RCB Bank withholds it for me until the holiday season. It’s the ultimate plan; does the work for me.” If your company doesn’t offer a similar program, use the benefits of your bank. Ask them what more they can offer beyond traditional banking. “For instance, one of my customers has several accounts with us and has access to all of them but one through her online banking,” Stephens said. “I asked her if
she wanted to add it; she said no. She was putting money in, yet didn’t want to see it, like a silent savings. “Your bank may also offer prepaid VISA cards*, said Stephens. “Set your budget, put only that amount on the card and use it for holiday shopping.” How else can you use your bank’s services to plan ahead? Price shop. “This is easiest to do online,” Stephens said. “I comparison shop, then plan my gifts. My priority is my kids first, then family and friends. I shop more online than in the past to find unique items instead of always going the same old stores, trying to come up with something new and different. I look for free shipping and online specials that can help save me money. Delivery to my doorstep is a bonus.” Leave emotion out. “Life is about making smart choices, not emotional choices,” said Stephens. “Woman can easily get fixated on things. We get giddy when we see something we really want and then we’ve got to have it. I say sleep on it, for a week. By then the emotion is
gone. If you still want it, wait for store specials. Take the spontaneity out, so rather than regret, you can really enjoy it better.” Think outside the spending box. “I like to personalize gifts, so often times I put a unique piece together, like a mosaic frame,” Stephens said. “Saves me money and I create a more meaningful gift.” To Stephens gift giving isn’t about spending money; it’s about spending time and creating memories. “It takes effort to make a gift but it’s worth it,” she said. “And, if I’m going to give a gift card, say to a pottery shop or winery, I’d rather include myself in the trip, so memories are made. It adds much more value to the gift.” With a little planning and creativity, you too can take the pressure off holiday spending this year. *Be sure to ask your bank about any fees or hidden charges that may be associated with a prepaid VISA card. Protect Your Roof from Winter Woes Dun-Rite Roofing’s headquarters are in Owasso. They primarily service Tulsa and the surrounding area, but will travel all over the state. If you live in Green Country and you need a dependable crew to repair or replace your roof, then do right by your home and call Dun-Rite. Jim Murr started his company back in 1992. Back then, he was leading a single, small crew who did new construction jobs for local builders. It was not long before his team built a reputation for doing quality re-roofs and repairs. Today, Murr commands a small army of roofing warriors whose mission is to ensure your home is protected from the elements. Tornadoes, lightning, ice storms – we are troopers when it comes to surviving the most challenging weather patterns. We’ve seen the cars that, after a minutes-long hailstorm, look like they drove through a warzone.
What many of us do not stop to consider, Murr points out, is how this battle with nature affects our own homes. Sometimes, the toll is immediately noticeable: a tree falls onto your roof. More often, a roof suffers critical damage that goes unnoticed until it is too late. “All it takes is for a fallen branch to break through or a small patch of shingles to blow off during a storm,” cautions Murr. Heat can cause a problem, too, warping shingles and allowing space for rain to infiltrate. “Once there is a way for the rain to seep down, underneath the shingles, it can get bad quickly,” he says. After a brutal summer bookended by tornado seasons, there is ample opportunity for even new roofs to become compromised. Minor damage to a rooftop can be easily exploited by an Oklahoma winter. Murr explains it is common for moisture underneath the shingles to
continued from page 1 wreak havoc on roofs as soon as the frigid season arrives. The water freezes, beginning a cycle of expansion and cracking in the shingles and wood. If left unchecked, water spreads throughout the roof or leaks into walls. In unlucky cases, one bad downpour can damage far more than roofing, ruining electrical wiring, appliances or floors in your house. The best defense against this scenario is vigilant attention and proper maintenance of the roof shingles and vunderlying structure. Dun-Rite helps guard against these threats by providing superior inspection and experienced, professional repair service. They can explain the benefits and weaknesses of various shingles and materials, taking budget, aesthetics and energy conservation into consideration. The team is prepared to take on virtually any project, and can suggest significant upgrades to your roof, too.
Recently, Dun-Rite added gutter systems to their list of products. If you find yourself in need of a new roof, the time is never better to add on rain gutters for extra protection and convenience. “Most projects are completed in a single day,” says Murr, assuring customers that Dun-Rite is committed to saving you time and providing excellent service. Most of us think the sound of rain beating down on the rooftop is soothing, and don’t expect it to lead to disaster. Make sure your roof brings you peace of mind, not a headache. Call Dun-Rite Roofing to ensure that when it rains, it doesn’t pour. For more information, contact

All in the Family Special for the month of November. “Aging is difficult on all creatures, and sometimes we tend to overlook the aging process," Dr. Guerriero says. "It is so important that we check seniors' bloodwork and consider preventative measures to insure the health and comfort of our geriatric family members. Wanda is a great example of a woman who understands the benefits

of preventative care. She is in her mid-70s and is loving and fully living life.” All pets over the age of seven are considered senior, and they may be suffering from arthritis, hypothyroidism, or liver and kidney issues. A physical exam and routine bloodwork can help rule out or diagnose these issues. “If clients have any questions, we strongly encourage them to call. Please
talk to a doctor or a staff member; veterinary services don’t have to be frightening,” Dr. Nobles encourages. Family Animal Medicine is a full service facility. They offer affordable, high quality care within the confines of a family-oriented practice. As a hometown veterinary hospital, clients can expect state-of-theart surgeries, separate cat and dog boarding with kennels and runs, X-rays, dental cleanings,
and a master groomer, Micki DeYong. Family Animal Medicine also provides full staff bios on their website and specials on their Facebook page, FAMOwasso. For more information, contact

Bring the Outdoors In
Have your hands happily full?
continued from page 1 the beauty of the outdoors and bring it indoors. In the four years the Taylors have been in business, they have gained a reputation for having just the right pieces for the comfortable look of a lake, ranch or mountain home. “We are happy when employees from other stores come in to see what all the buzz is about,” says Robin. Last year, they decided to go a step beyond their initial Aspen log furniture to feature new items that easily blend with a more traditional setting. The look is still rustic and still elegant, yet far more flexible when it comes to decorating. The risk was big, but worth it. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 1-3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., they will celebrate their first year under this new concept with an Anniversary Sale. “We were overwhelmed with the way our customers fell in love with our new merchandise,” says Robin. “And we hope people who have never visited will come in to see us this weekend.” Every item of merchandise in the store will be on sale during the three-day event. On Saturday, smoked meats will be available for lunch. All three days, from noon to 3 p.m., will be a Thanksgiving turkey craft for kids; the craft is something that parents will want to keep and pull out for their decor every year! In addition, they will hold daily drawings for a $100 gift card to the store. Clinton and Robin travel extensively to select quality merchandise from vendors who share
their passion for customer service. “We work with people who, like us, do whatever it takes to get the job done well,” says Clinton. The same holds true for their catalog partners. If customers don’t see exactly what they want on the floor, they can browse through dozens of catalogs. Or they can have their idea custom designed into reality. Many people building their dream homes have relied on The Refuge Lifestyle to develop their own signature look. Entertainment areas and man caves are especially popular for personalizing. Taxidermy service is available, as well as custom lighting. If a remodeling project is in the future, they can give any room a complete makeover. The Taylors have welcomed people from all the surrounding states and as far away as New York. They have shipped furniture throughout the country. Social media and a monthly newsletter play an important role in keeping in touch with their customers near and far. Clinton and Robin welcome the opportunity to share all that their unique store has to offer. The Refuge Lifestyle is just west of Memorial on 151st Street and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, contact

At 7 p.m. the JROTC color guard will lead a salute to veterans, after which the 18-piece Sounds of Music Orchestra will take the stage and fill the hangar with 1940s-era music throughout the evening. The evening will be a perfect opportunity to dust off your dancing shoes – or try out some of the new moves taught by TOSS. The Big Band Hangar Dance has become a favorite amongst swing dancers, with several troupes attending every year from around the country. “We’ve been told by swing dancers that our dance is one of their favorites,” says Bob Prater. Recommended attire is casual, military or vintage. No matter how you dress, come prepared for an evening full of fun, music and history. With a powerful 18-piece orchestra and vintage aircraft and vehicles providing the backdrop for the evening, this event promises a night full of memories. There will be great opportunities for photographs and a chance to pick up some vintage memorabilia at the PX, Vintage Store and the silent auction – all for the worthy cause of preserving our history and educating the public.
PPutting the Wing in Swing
The Commemorative Air Force Spirit of Tulsa Squadron hosts a full day and evening of fun on November 9 with Wings Over Tulsa and the Big Band Hangar Dance.
By Christopher Davis
Who doesn’t get a thrill from the roar of an engine inside a World War II era combat plane? Just the view alone is enough to give one goose bumps. The history, the emotion, the honor associated with the era can be overwhelming. How often does a person get the chance to see one of these planes up close? How often does one get a chance to actually ride in a 70-year-old open-cockpit aircraft? You can do all of this and more, while supporting one of the most interesting nonprofit organizations around – the Commemorative Air Force. Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 9 and plan on attending the CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron’s Wings Over Tulsa and the 12th annual Big Band Hangar Dance at RL Jones airport. The Commemorative Air Force’s main objective is the acquisition, restoration and preservation of combat aircraft. While much of what they do in restoring aircraft happens behind the scenes in hangars and workshops, the CAF’s diligence in preservation and education yields some highly visible and appreciated results.
will have a special opportunity to ride in the PT19 and support the CAF. On Saturday, November 9, the CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will hold its biggest event of the year with a full day of activities. The day kicks off with Wings Over Tulsa. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Spirit of Tulsa Squadron will provide free honor flights for WWII veterans and rides to the public (with purchase of flight ticket). There will also be plenty of exhibits featuring vintage WWII memorabilia, military vehicles, model aircraft and more. Attendees are invited to tour the facility, learn about the history of aircrafts and vehicles, and bid in a silent auction. Daytime admission for Wings Over Tulsa is free for all ages. As the afternoon wraps up, attendees will move into the hangar, officially kicking off the 12th annual Big Band Hangar Dance. A buffet dinner, prepared by Catering Connection, will run from 5 to 6 p.m. Following dinner, the festivities begin, including free swing dance lessons between 6 and 7 p.m. provided by Tulsa Oklahoma Swing Syndicate (TOSS).
Jim Mills and Bob Prater with a WWII-era Fairchild PT-19.
As keeper of many restored combat aircraft, the CAF participates in air shows across the country. The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron is no different, and proudly shows its World War II era Fairchild PT-19 around the region. When not travelling to air shows and museums, the plane sees flight time in Tulsa, where it takes passengers on educational tours and honor flights. The CAF honors combat veterans by providing flights in the very planes they have restored. “Some of these
veterans are in their 90s,” says Jim Mills, CAF public relations volunteer. “It is important to us to give something back to our veterans, and this is our way of saying thanks,” added CAF Spirit of Tulsa Squadron Unit Leader Bob Prater. A flight in a World War II era PT-19 is not reserved exclusively for veterans. The CAF sells flight tickets to the general public as a fundraiser. Tickets generally cost $85 for adults and children 12 and older. This month, the public

Two Can't-Miss Shows Coming to Broken Arrow Broken Arrow PAC concludes the first half of Spotlight Series with Beatles Tribute, David Phelps.
By Adam J. Foreman
Bringing the world to Broken Arrow has been the mission of the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center since its opening five years ago. And to celebrate five years of world-class entertainment, the 2013-14 Spotlight Series keeps bringing unique shows to the stage, guaranteeing a season full of surprises. The Spotlight Series, presented by AVB Bank, is also sponsored by the Broken Arrow Convention and
Rooftop performance. David Phelps returns to the BAPAC for a record fourth time on Dec. 15 for a Christmas show like no other. “It’s been some of the most rewarding years of my life, and I know the people of Broken Arrow and abroad will see this season as a hallmark of pure talent and excitement,” said Mark Frie, BAPAC executive director. “Every year, we do our best to bring a wide array of entertainment to our stage, hoping to present a little something for everyone.” As “the next best thing to seeing The Beatles!” (Associated Press), RAIN performs the full range of The Beatles' discography live onstage, including the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio but never performed for an audience. In addition, new songs are being included with the launch of the 2013 Tour. Together longer than The Beatles, RAIN has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary
Visitors Bureau, First National Bank of Broken Arrow, SJS Hospitality, TTCU The Credit Union, Cox Communications and St. Johns Broken Arrow. The first half of the season sees two phenomenal shows the whole family can enjoy. On Nov. 22, RAIN: A Tribute To The Beatles takes the stage with four amazing performers who mimic the Fab Four from their early years to the final Apple

foursome, delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance that’s as infectious as it is transporting. From the early hits to later classics (I Want To Hold Your Hand, Hard Day’s Night, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Let It Be, Come Together, Hey Jude and more), this adoring tribute will take you back to a time when all you needed was love and a little help from your friends! For more than a decade, David Phelps has honed that ability to identify and deliver great songs, and it has earned him a reputation as one of the Christian industry’s most versatile voices. A graduate of Baylor University with a degree in vocal performance, Phelps gained acclaim during his eight years with the Gaither Vocal Band, before leaving to resume his solo career with a deal on Word
Records. Noted as a lyric tenor for his ability to sing in a high tessitura for sustained periods, Phelps has consistently garnered rave reviews for his three-octave range. Beyond his obvious technical skill, what sets Phelps apart is the heart and emotional weight he brings to each performance. More than just a great singer, he has the ability to really connect with a lyric and convey every nuance of feeling in a great song. Nicknamed “The Voice” for his otherworldly tenor-range pipes, David will take you through his endless string of hit songs as well as holiday favorites, past and present. For more information, contact

Wade’s RV Clinic Earns Top Dealer Award W The Glenpool business has received recognition as top RV dealer in Oklahoma for three brands.
By Duane Blankenship
Wade’s RV Clinic owner Wade Reeves has been recognized in 2013 as the top dealer in Oklahoma for Denali, Rubicon and Voltage brand RV sales. The announcement was made by Nate Goldenberg, general manager of Dutchmen Manufacturing, a highly established, well-known industry player with a history of innovations and market leadership. Wade has been in the RV
industry for over 30 years. His experience and knowledge is evidenced daily in sales, service and the way customers feel about doing business with Wade’s RV Clinic. Wade grew up in Sapulpa and attended Sapulpa High School. Upon graduation, he went to work for another dealer and spent nights attending Tulsa Community College. He founded Wade’s RV Clinic in August of 2005. Wade has attended numerous

technical education training courses over the years, has earned CLEET certification (Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training), and continues his education to “stay on top of the RV game.” When asked what sets Wade’s RV apart from the rest, Wade’s answer is: “Who doesn’t like feeling special when they are shopping, purchasing or visiting someone? You can go anywhere and shop and purchase, but in the end don’t you also want to feel like a friend instead of just a number?” Whether it’s for sales or service, Wade’s goal is to make his customers feel at home, and confident that their needs are being met and exceeded. The Wade’s RV Clinic management team includes Finance Manager Amanda Miller (Wade’s daughter), General Manager Gregg Meyers, and Advertising/Marketing Manager Ron Pratt. Each testifies that Wade spends seven days a week at work or plugged into the business. Gregg Meyers added, “Wade is the hardest worker I’ve ever known. It’s plainly apparent when you see his accomplishments in just
eight years.” Wade’s RV has customers all over North America, and Wade delights in having some from Alaska, Canada and many other states in addition to Oklahoma. Wade’s RV gets lots of visits from RV owners traveling through our state who discover that they have a problem. Upon receiving exemplary service, many pledge to continue dealing with the Glenpool-based company. “We’ve got good prices,” says Wade, “and service is our number one priority. Doing everything conceivably possible, we’ve made good impressions with our customers, earning their respect and business.” A doctor from Oklahoma City trades exclusively with Wade’s. The last RV service he had done in OKC required driving to four locations over two weeks to get everything repaired or serviced. Wade’s RV is now his one-stop shop. Wade’s RV Clinic provides sales, service, parts and storage. They service all brands and all types of travel units. “We do more chassis work than anyone in our area,” says Wade. They sell and repair tires, do oil changes, generator service, roof and dash air
conditioning service, body work, flooring and carpeting. They will also store your RV indoors and get it ready whenever you are heading out for the weekend, a vacation, or to the game of your favorite team. They provide diesel, propane, water and anything else you might need, making sure all is ready for your trip or outing. All you have to do is get in and drive off with peace of mind. New offerings at Wade’s include products from Denali, Aspen Trail, Voltage, Rubicon, Infinity, Four Winds and Siesta. They always have great selections of both new and used RV units, from pop-ups to the finest motor homes. “We’ll also trade for just about anything,” Wade says. Wade’s RV Clinic is located in Glenpool west of Highway 75 on Highway 117. They are minutes from Sapulpa and 10 minutes from downtown Tulsa. For more information, contact

OOn the Go Again Phyllis Pope of Broken Arrow is happy to be back to her active lifestyle after total knee replacement surgery performed by Dr. LaButti. By Joshua Danker-Dake
Phyllis Pope had a successful total knee replacement operation by Dr. LaButti.
In September of 2012, Phyllis Pope of Broken Arrow had her right knee replaced by Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. “When I was young, I liked to jump out of trees and off of rooftops,” says Phyllis. “I’m also a bit clumsy – I’ve fallen a lot over the years, and usually, I fall on my knees. They’ve always hurt a little, and over time, they’ve gotten worse. For the last four or five years, my right leg would hurt and swell so badly that I couldn’t bend my knee or walk – I had to elevate it and ice it and put heating pads on it all the time.” Phyllis, a self-described on-the-go housewife, enjoys traveling with her husband, Julian, who is retired, as well as sightseeing, antiquing, and going to flea markets and auctions. In addition to her work in her church nursery, she enjoys babysitting for her neighbors and attending country music concerts. But the pain and swelling in her knee affected Phyllis’s ability to do all of it, she says.

www.ValueNews.com “Sightseeing on vacations was tough – I would walk a little ways and then have to sit down. Sometimes, we just had to go back to our room. Eventually, the knee started giving way, and I would almost fall. I was frustrated and miserable. I also work in the nursery at Indian Springs Baptist Church, and I was always worried about falling with one of the babies. I couldn’t even get on the floor to play, and if I managed to, I needed help getting back up.” Phyllis first went to Dr. LaButti in August 2012. “My husband made the appointment,” she says. “I wasn’t happy about it. I hate surgeries, and I have a lot of friends who’ve had bad experiences with surgery; some have even had to have more surgeries afterward. Even though I was in so much pain, I did not want a complete knee surgery.” Dr. LaButti compared new and year-old X-rays and told her the problem would only get worse. “Dr. LaButti was very helpful and patient,” says Phyllis. “He told me about the procedure and everything involved with complete knee replacement surgery, recovery, and beyond. He told me how much better my quality of life would be.” Eventually, she decided to have the surgery. “It turned out to be one of the best things that’s ever
happened to me,” Phyllis says. “It restored my mobility and eliminated my pain. I’m thankful my husband made the appointment, and I’m thankful there was a doctor like Dr. LaButti to help me.” Phyllis says her postsurgery therapy was completely worthwhile. “After the surgery, I used a machine to work my knee, and I had inhome therapy for six weeks, which was wonderful, and then outpatient therapy. The therapists did a great job,” she says. Phyllis was also impressed with Dr. LaButti’s staff. “The check-in was great and I never had to wait to see the doctor,” she says. “The nurses were wonderful, asking questions and listening. They seemed to really care. And whenever my husband had questions, he would call, and the doctor’s nurse always returned his calls very promptly. She was very helpful.” Phyllis highly recommends Dr. LaButti. “If it weren’t for him – with all his knowledge and experience, as well as bedside manner – I would never have had the surgery. Now I can do just about anything.” For more information, contact

NNot Just Your Holiday Ham Store The Hamlet offers a new menu and improved looks, with the same great taste. By Deanna Rebro
Make your holiday meals and get-togethers extra easy and extra special with a delicious ham or turkey from The Hamlet. Since 1986, Tulsa families have enjoyed the exclusive, honey cured, spiral sliced, honey-kissed™ hams that only The Hamlet offers. These hams are always imitated but never duplicated. The special blend of honey and spices gives the honeykissed hams their full-bodied flavor in every bite, with family and friends saying, “This is real ham!” No holiday would be complete without a turkey. The Hamlet also offers whole smoked turkeys or boneless spiral sliced, all white meat honey-kissed turkey breasts. “Order early to get just the right size ham or turkey you want,” says Bryan Hester, who with his wife, Shannon, owns two stores in Tulsa. Hams range from 7 to 18 pounds, whole smoked
turkeys from 10 to 16 pounds and turkey breasts from 4 to 5 pounds. If you want to take the credit for an absolutely decadent dessert, try the pecan pie in a jar or fudge pecan pie in a jar from The Hamlet. A pie couldn’t be any quicker, easier or better. And you can enjoy the applause. Check out the pancake and muffin mixes for holiday breakfasts or other foods from Stonewall Kitchen or Robert Rothschild. The Hamlet also offers its own line of specialty foods to serve or to give. These include products to satisfy everything from sophisticated gourmet tastes to down home comfort cooking. Pickled quail eggs, apple butter, sweet baby corn and dilled green beans, to name a few. And the yearround favorite that flies off the shelves –raspberry chipotle sauce to serve over cream cheese or to flavor
meats. Any of these items can form a theme for a customized gift basket for as little as $45, with corporate discounts available. They offer a large inventory of made in Oklahoma products that are a favorite for shipping anywhere in the country, as well as the honeykissed hams in their distinctive gold wrappers. Bryan also extends an invitation to check out the new patio grill at the 91st and Sheridan location. The Hamlet patio grill offers yearround al fresco dining Monday through Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. Ceiling fans, ceiling-mounted heaters and a wood burning fireplace create a comfortable setting for a fine meal. Menu selections include exclusive Hamlet appetizers, steaks and gourmet burgers. “All our meats are the same premium quality as our
