30th Annual Christmas Home Tour The Junior Ocieleta Club celebrates three decades of its Claremore holiday event. By Cassie Woods The Junior Ocieleta Christmas Home Tour is a community tradition showcasing some of the fantastic homes in Claremore and the surrounding area. This tradition started in 1983, marking the 2013 home tour as the club’s 30th annual tour. This year’s tour will take place on December 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature four beautiful residential homes decorated for the Christmas holiday. The event continues to grow in popularity, and each year hundreds of people tour the homes and enjoy gathering their own holiday decorating ideas. Additionally, the club will feature a commemorative cookbook featuring family recipes from its members for sale at each tour stop.
“We have a great group of ladies organizing this year’s event,” said Emily Becker, Home Tour co-director. “I really do believe this may be one of the best tours yet, and I am excited that worked out in conjunction with our 30th anniversary.” Junior Ocieleta is comprised of young women who work together to raise funds for different charity needs. Through the annual Christmas Home Tour the group has been able to assist many charity organizations. This community tradition is the club’s main fundraiser, and proceeds are used to provide scholarships to local students as well as support numerous non-profit groups and projects in the community. “One hundred percent of the
proceeds from the tour go back into the community,” said Ashly Snyder, Home Tour co-director. “Some of the organizations we sponsor include Safenet, The Manger, United Way, Rogers County Youth Shelter, Rogers County School Foundations, Bitby-Bit, CASA and Big Brothers Big Sisters. We also provide scholarships each year to Rogers County high school seniors and have an Ocie Mayberry Scholarship Endowment for students at Rogers State University.” The stops on this year’s tour include the homes of John and Jan Belcher at 10099 Ratliff Dr., Shana Myers at 25185 S. 4109 Rd., Danny and Melinda Steelmon at 14646 E. 520 Rd., (continued on page 28)
Junior Ocieleta members (front row, L to R) Eileen Skocdopole, Emily Becker, (back row, L to R) Lacey Hendrix, Kate Pogue, Ashly Snyder, Megan Snyder, Kristin Roseberry and Savannah Haddock gear up for the club’s 30th annual Christmas Home Tour.

“Wow! I have never seen anything like this!” This is a comment spoken over and over by first-time visitors to The Refuge Lifestyle. Store owners Clinton and Robin Taylor say they are thrilled every time they hear those words. The unique Bixby store at 7600 E. 151st St. is eye candy for anyone who wants the look of rustic elegance in their home, with something special that is not found in every big box retailer. “We strive to be the premier supplier of quality cabin, lodge, southwest and western furniture, décor and accessories in northeastern Oklahoma,” says Clinton. The Refuge Lifestyle offers furnishings and accessories for every room in the house, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Natural materials such as logs, barn wood, iron, leather and animal skins capture the beauty of the outdoors and bring it indoors. In the four years the Taylors have been in business, they have gained a reputation for having just the right pieces for the comfortable look of a lake, ranch or mountain home. “We are happy when employees from other stores come in to see what all the buzz is about,” says Robin. Last year, they decided to go a step beyond their initial Aspen log furniture to feature new (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
The Great Escape: Your 401(k)…..Your Way! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Many folks nearing retirement begin to take a closer look at their 401(k)s. The closer to retirement, the less risk you can afford to take! In particular, the last few years before retirement it is imperative that “You make hay while the sun shines!” Employers and 401(k) plan administrators don’t advertise this fact, but most workers 59 and a half and older, and even some younger ones, can roll over 401(k) funds while they’re still working and contributing to the plan. This option isn’t right for everyone. But in some cases it can provide more attractive investment choices and much needed professional retirement planning. The law allows workers to empty their 401(k) accounts once they reach 59 and a half. They can roll all of the money into an IRA without paying taxes on it now. However, while the law permits this, employers don’t have to permit it. A survey done by the Council of America in 2006 found that 70% of companies and 89% of those with 5,000 or more employees allow in-service distributions. Here are a few reasons you may want to consider an inservice rollover: 1) If you need to escape a lousy 401(k) plan that has expensive or mediocre investments, an early rollover may be for you. 2) If you don’t have enough choices or want more choices, an in-service rollover could be for you. According to a survey done by the Council of America only about 14% of company 401(k)s offer a brokerage window that gives you access to a broad
array of stocks, bonds, and investments. 3) If you want professional help managing your retirement assets, an inservice rollover may be right for you. Many folks don’t think too much about managing their 401(k) until they get close to retirement. The closer you get, the more you are likely to need help. 4) If you want to be able to stretch your distributions out for your beneficiaries should something happen to you, an in-service rollover may be the answer. A spouse who inherits a 401(k) can roll it into their own IRA with all the flexibility that an IRA offers its original owner. However for kids, grandkids, or other non-spousal heirs some retirement plans, like 401(k)s require a lump sum distribution upon the death of the participant. That means beneficiaries have to receive the money and pay taxes on it almost immediately. If those assets were in a IRA instead, your heirs would be able to stretch their receipt of money over a much longer time, thereby maximizing the tax deferral and minimizing the income taxes owed. Like we always tell our clients, there are positives and negatives to every investment and every strategy. We want
you to know the good and the bad so you can make confident and informed decisions about your money. So before you rush out and roll your money over consider some of the reasons you may want to leave it in a 401(k). While IRAs offer significant benefits like greater flexibility and control, they do not offer the following 401(k) options: 1) You cannot borrow from an IRA, unlike a 401(k), which offers loan options. 2) Creditor protection is stronger on ERISA-protected plans like a 401(k). IRAs offer some creditor protection but it is based on state law and frequently requires you to file for bankruptcy. 3) Required Minimum Distributions don’t start in a 401(k) plan until you stop working. In an IRA, they must begin at age 70½. If you are unsure if your plan allows for an in-service rollover, stop in and visit with us. We have clients who are employees of many of the companies in the area and have helped them through this process. If we do not have a copy of the plan document for your company, we will help you with the process of acquiring one. The closer you get to retirement the more it matters how and why you hold certain investments for your retirement savings. Get informed. Who you trust matters! AA Family Pharmacy Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy – where everyone knows your name. By Carol Beck-Round
When was the last time you walked through the doors of a pharmacy and someone greeted you by your first name? In today’s climate of big business, it may feel like you’re nothing more than a prescription number. When you walk in the doors of Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy, however, you’ll feel right at home with Pharmacist Jared Bennett and his staff of five who take the time to know their customers. At Bennett’s, you’re more than a number on a prescription bottle. “We want our customers to feel like family,” says office manager and store co-owner Stephanie Bennett, “so walking in our pharmacy should feel like coming home.” Jared Bennett, who graduated from OU in 1997, opened his pharmacy this past June. “There is no other place I would’ve considered opening this pharmacy,” says the 1991 Claremore High School graduate. Before opening his own pharmacy, Bennett spent over 16 years
with Drug Warehouse, as a pharmacist from 1997 to 2005 and as a district manager from 2005 to 2012. “With the closing of the Drug Warehouse in Claremore,” he adds, “it was a perfect opportunity to get back home.” Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy has that hometown feel. When you call to refill a prescription, you don’t get a recording asking you to punch this number or that one. Instead, you’ll get a friendly voice on the other end of the line, and all prescriptions are filled in 15 minutes or less. “Having a personal relationship with our customers is important,” Stephanie adds. “Getting a prescription filled by someone you know and someone who knows you is important.” The pharmacy carries name-brand and generic prescriptions, has a fully stocked over-the-counter section and will special order items upon request. “For example,” says Stephanie, “we’ve had requests for all-
natural products like ginger pops, which help with nausea associated with morning sickness. We can usually have the special order items in the very next day.” Gift items, greeting cards, snacks and cold drinks can also be found at this hometown pharmacy, which accepts Express Scripts and Tri-Care (some local pharmacies do not). “We accept all insurance,” says Stephanie, “and we match prices.” Transferring a prescription is easy. “We do all the work,” she adds. “You just bring in your prescription bottle and we do the rest. You don’t have to feel uncomfortable about transferring to our pharmacy.” For the tech-savvy, you can download the pharmacy’s app and refill your prescription via your smart phone. “It’s easy,” says Stephanie, “but if you want us to download it for you, just bring your phone by the pharmacy. It’s fast and the app allows you to scan the

barcode on your prescription bottle, which sends the refill order directly to us.” They’ve only been open since June 18, but the Bennetts are already seeking ways to give back to the community. In the works is a plan to help customers on a fixed income who use the Pelivan for transportation. “When they ride the Pelivan to our pharmacy to pick up a prescription,” says Jared, “we will give them a ticket to return home. It saves them a few dollars but when you’re on a fixed income, it helps.” The pharmacy will also be hosting a charity canned food drive in November. Anyone who brings in five non-perishable food items will receive a 10 percent discount on over-the-counter
purchases. Prescriptions are not included. All food items will be donated to a local church food bank. “At Bennett’s Route 66 Pharmacy,” says Stephanie, “we are dedicated to providing every patient with excellent customer service and care every time they visit our store.” The pharmacy is open seven days a week: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., with a convenient drive-thru. DDickens on the Boulevard Claremore Main Street Association is set to host its popular holiday event November 22 and 23.
By Cassie Woods
Dickens on the Boulevard is a Victorianthemed Christmas festival in historic downtown Claremore. Visitors to the holiday celebration enjoy live stage entertainment, authentic chuck wagon meals, pictures with Santa, a living nativity and much more. This year’s event will be held Friday, November 22, and Saturday, November 23, from
6 to 10 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can also catch a wagon ride for a tour of the Claremore History Museum. A Victorian street dance, called by Phil Sample and including the Grand March, Venetian Waltz, Virginia Reel and others, will be held both nights of the event. Additionally, Territorial Marshals will entertain

crowds with a reenactment of Western-themed action. Afterwards, attendees can join them for a friendly game of cards. “New this year we will also have Old Time Photography by CVA,” said Cindy Bissett, director, Claremore Main Street. “CVA is downtown Claremore’s newest photography studio, and they will offer Victorian backgrounds for family photos at very affordable prices.” Living window displays will pepper the downtown area, while period craftsmen such as a blacksmith and wood turners answer questions from the crowd as they perform their craft and sell their wares. “We encourage those who attend to wear Victorianera costumes as well,” said Bissett. “A lot of our volunteers will be dressed up and it really adds to the fun feel of the event. There will also be a contest each night with great prizes awarded to those with the best cos-
tumes.” Several Oklahoma authors will also be on location for a book signing. Some of those authors include Bill Wetterman and Charles Sasser, Pamela Wetterman and Linda Trout, Tammy Mullins, Carla Stewart, Mary Coley, Lorraine Holman and Amy Conkling. Another favorite of the event, Dickens on the Boulevard will again feature the annual “Tales from the Top.” These tours of the upper floors of some of Claremore’s historic downtown buildings will feature costumed actors portraying animated versions of the city’s history. The tours are $5 a person and can be booked in advance. Space for the tours is limited to 60 people per night. “Dickens on the Boulevard has become a tradition in downtown through the hard work of the great business owners, volunteers and the Main Street program,” said Bissett.
“This is just another way for us to celebrate Claremore’s rich tradition and enjoy our present in the heart of the city.” In addition to the entertainment Dickens on the Boulevard provides, it also the kickoff to the holiday shopping season. For this two-night event, the wonderful specialty shops that line the downtown strip stay open until 8 p.m. This allows shoppers who may not be able to make it during regular business hours a chance to shop locally for some very unique items. Shoppers can register for a nightly drawing of $400 Dickens Dollars to be given away before the dance. This prize can be used in any participating downtown store until December 31, 2013.

at CChanges Children’s Orchard Kari Hendrix will be stepping down as store owner after three years. By Susan Erler
Life is filled with twists and turns and, sometimes, unexpected course corrections. Just when we think we are on a path to stay, suddenly we find ourselves in unchartered territory. That is exactly what Children’s Orchard owner Kari Hendrix is currently facing. Children’s Orchard, located at 12307 E. 96th St N. in Owasso, has been Kari’s passion and focus for the past three years. “I have truly loved running the store, getting to make so many friends, and helping people in the community,” says Kari. “And although I had planned to continue to spend more time working here and assisting my fabulous customers, sometimes things happen that you have no control over. And that is what has happened in my life.” Kari is facing a lifechanging situation within her family, and she needs to step away from ownership of Children’s Orchard in order to focus her full attention on her family. “I never
considered not choosing to put family first,” explains Kari. “But, it is still very hard. Hopefully this will afford someone else the opportunity that they have been praying for. I want someone to take my place that can enjoy this store as much as I have.” While Kari looks for a new owner for her store, she is quick to point out that the store is not closing. “It will be business as usual,” says Kari. “Most customers probably
won’t even notice the transition. There will still be the fantastic and personal customer service my clients have grown to expect.” Children’s Orchard spends a great deal of time working with all of their new franchise owners, and they have developed a plan that makes taking over an existing location very easy. If you or anyone you know has ever dreamed of becoming a business owner, this may be the perfect time to give it a

Until the change of ownership, Kari will continue to keep things in the store as fun and exciting as always. have all the hottest items but without the hassle of afterThanksgiving shopping. What could be easier? Ask Kari how you can turn your unwanted items into store credit and see how easy it is to complete your holiday shopping without putting a dent in your bank account. It’s easy and she is happy to share her savings tips. “This is just one of the fantastic values we offer our customers,” says Kari. “I love showing them how to turn their own children’s toys and clothing in to dollars that can be used to purchase items. It’s amazing how much money you can save.” If you have a large amount of items to bring in, Kari simply asks that you call ahead and make an appointment so she can have plenty of staff on hand to get you on your way as quickly as possible. IInsurance Rates on the Rise Claremore’s RCI Insurance Group can help save you time and money.
By Carol Beck-Round
Oklahoma’s insurance companies are facing a tough market, according to Amber Helmuth, personal risk manager with RCI Insurance Group. “Due to hail, wind, snow, ice storms and wildfires that have taken place the last several years, the majority of insurance companies have had to increase their rates significantly or have completely quit writing
insurance in Oklahoma due of the extensive number of claims turned in and the ones expected in the future.” In addition to the catastrophes, the cost for materials, labor and overall repair on a home or an automobile continue to fluctuate. “Over the last few years, the cost of shingles has quadrupled,” Amber explains. “And when the demand for
Hanna Hayes, personal lines agent; Jeri Giles, customer service representative; and Amber Helmuth, personal risk manager at RCI Insurance Group, are ready to help customers with all of their insurance needs.
something increases, so does the cost. Just in the last month or two, we are seeing a significant increase on the estimated replacement cost for homes, likely caused by the catastrophes our state experienced in Moore and other areas.” What does this mean for the insured and what is your agent doing about it? “Because we are an independent insurance agency,” says Amber, “we work for the customers – not the insurance companies. We’re expecting an increase on most insurance policies over the next year, and RCI’s agents have been working extra hours to review every policy as it comes up for renewal. If we notice a large premium increase, we try to find a company with a better rate.” Amber encourages customers to call the office immediately if you’re unhappy with the rate. “We have access to a number of companies and may be able to get you quality coverage at a better rate. At RCI, we understand every dollar helps,
but we’ve also seen the effects of not having the proper insurance in place when tragedy strikes. We do know some companies are able to extend better rates, but sometimes the coverage is lacking. Our goal is to offer you quality coverage at competitive rates.” RCI employees have also been undergoing extensive training to prepare for the Affordable Care Act. Amber and Hanna Hayes have spent approximately 30 hours combined in training to assist those who will qualify for health insurance under the new law. “There are close to 50 options, and we want to be able to help our clients navigate through these options of affordable healthcare so they get the best coverage,” Amber explains. Based on household size and income, more people in Oklahoma will now qualify for health insurance since the federal law was passed several years ago, according to Helmuth. Since RCI Insurance Group became a recognized AARP auto and home
Page 9
insurance provider last year, they’re able to offer even more options with healthcare. “This is the first year we will be able to offer AARP Medicare supplemental insurance through United Health,” says Mick Cottom, RCI president. “You can only get United Health supplemental insurance through AARP.” You don’t have to be an AARP member currently to enroll in their insurance program. “We are required to offer other solutions as well,” he says. “We think this is a good program but we’re not limited and if we think we have a better option for a customer, we will offer it.” If the AARP plan is the best product for one of RCI’s customers, and that customer is not already an AARP member, he or she can sign up during the insurance enrollment process. However, if it isn’t the best plan for a customer, AARP enrollment is not required. “We want to do what is best for our customers,” he adds. “We are here to guide you through the maze of Medicare and health insurance, as well as insurance in general.” For more information, contact

AAssisted Living at Its Finest The staff and facilities of Canoe Brook are geared towards providing quality care for your loved ones.
By Deanna Rebro
When a loved one needs to leave the comforts of home but does not need 24-hour complex medical supervision, Canoe Brook Assisted Living & Alzheimer’s Care Community may be the solution. In a serene and wooded atmosphere just minutes from Tulsa, Canoe Brook features 34 assisted living apartments and 38 specially equipped memory care apartments for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents. Opened in December of 2009, Canoe Brook was spearheaded by Jack Meyer, local apartment developer, and Jim Colbert is executive director. Assisted living apartments, available in three sizes, have a private key entry. Each apartment includes a kitchenette with microwave and apartment size refrigerator, and a spacious bathroom. Items that are commonly upgrades at most other facilities are standard at Canoe Brook – a ceiling fan and bolted shower chair in each apartment, plus an emergency alert bracelet in case a resident falls and cannot reach the safety
signaling devices. Those who want maximum independence can have it, explains Anthony Fleming, director of marketing and community relations. “We support and encourage the independence of our residents,” he says. Residents are free to do their laundry in easy-to-use washers and dryers, or they can have
their laundry done for them. A beauty salon and barber shop is on site. Seven common areas provide many social opportunities in relaxed and comfortable home-like settings. That includes lots of natural light throughout the facility and three ornamental fireplaces. A library, TV room, game room, crafts

room and exercise room give residents something to do any time of the day or night. Planned outside activities and transport services are also available. Three meals a day are provided to meet both nutritional needs and personal tastes. The residents make their selections from menus, so each meal is individually prepared for them. Besides an elegant dining room, a special family dining room is available for enjoying a private meal with loved ones. The meals are serviced for 90 minutes to accommodate anyone’s schedule. When care is needed, a trained staff under the direction of medical personnel is on hand 24/7. Residents enrolled in the assisted living basic plan can choose from three levels of assistive services if and when their needs or preferences change. State-of-the-art equipment keeps memory-impaired residents safe and secure. “Our focus is on quality patient care,” says Anthony. “We are very attentive to our
residents’ needs and strive to remain proactive in addressing any concerns or issues they may have.” A keypad entry and exit system is used for both the electronic gates that surround the building and the interior common areas. In addition, each resident wears a Wonder Guard monitoring bracelet to prevent wandering for even the shortest time. Basic memory impaired service and two levels of enhanced care can be provided. Canoe Brook recognizes the stress that families endure when loved ones are faced with chronic memory loss. Every month, Anthony, a certified facilitator for Alzheimer’s Support Groups through the Alzheimer’s Association and certified dementia practitioner, hosts a meeting for all family members who wish to attend. “This gives them an opportunity to share their concerns with others who are going through the same experience,” he explains. “To us, the family is just as important as the resident.”

KKym’s Nicaragua Trip Kym Claborn, Speech Pathologist and Manager of Summit Pediatric Therapies took her skills and passion for children with special needs all the way to Central America this past Kym Claborn, March with friend MS, CCC - SLP Stephanie Kuykendall, Speech Occupational Pathologist Therapist. Over Christmas in 2012, Carl and Beth Brassfield, missionaries in Nicaragua, were back in Claremore visiting family and friends. Many years ago the Brassfields felt the calling to move to Nicaragua to start their own ministry which would offer protection to sexually abused girls. The home they created was named Emmanuel Home of Protection and is under the umbrella of the Baptist Medical and Dental Mission International. Stephanie Kuykendall learned from them during their visit that they had acquired several special needs kids that year when another orphanage had closed down. What was supposed to be a couple of weeks care became 6 months. Needless to say, Stephanie knew that her expertise coupled with Kym Claborn’s could help the Brassfields care for these children better. The weekend before Spring Break, Claborn and Kuykendall got on a plane
and headed to Central America to meet three very special kids. The kids were grade school age and there was a girl with severe cerebral palsy who had been found in a field after her mother had died and her sisters could no longer care for her. There was also a young boy with autism and another girl who was both cognitively and visually impaired. The Brassfields had sent videos to Claborn and Kuykendall of the children in their daily activities so the two therapists could determine ways they could individually help each child. There was much planning and preparation involved for the four day trip and each therapist packed a bag for themselves and another larger bag full of items they could use to assist the children with special needs. Summit donated several items that

Emmanuel Home of Protection in Nicaragua Claborn either took with her to Nicaragua or shipped later. The items included splinting materials, Velcro, a picture exchange communication system, bath chair, a stander and a gait trainer. They also brought sensory toys, feeding stuff to work with the children on self feeding, items to make seating support for the two children in wheelchairs. Claborn and Kuykendall did assessments of each child and came up with individual treatment plans so they could teach the staff activities to do with each child after they left. They carefully laid out in writing a treatment plan along with pictures of what that activity looked like so the staff could reference it if they forgot how to do a specific activity. Since returning to Claremore, the Brassfields have reported that they have been able to implement the therapy plans Claborn and Kuykendall created for Natalie, Reyna and Imanuel. During the summer, nearly every team that came to Emmanuel Home of Protection had someone who either worked with special needs kids in a classroom or were therapists. They were able to confirm, add to, and encourage their staff with what needed to be done. The Brassfields said they couldn’t believe the progress they have made with Natalie, the young girl with cerebral palsy. She is sitting more comfortably

now and has put on more weight since they started adding more fat to her diet. Claborn’s time in Nicaragua was both heart wrenching and rewarding. “I’m so glad I was in a position to support Carl and Beth’s ministry in Nicaragua and use my knowledge to help these three young kids.” “It was a start to improving their quality of life and help improve their physical abilities,” states Claborn. “We were just one piece of the puzzle as others came in behind us to add to our work.” Claborn has made it her livelihood to improve the skills of young children experiencing difficulties, she just decided to take her expertise to another country. FFestival of Trees Safenet Service’s annual gala and auction brings awareness to and raises funds for domestic violence.
By Carol Beck-Round
Fun, food and fundraising are on tap for Safenet Service’s 9th annual Festival of Trees Gala & Auction, scheduled for Friday, December 6 at the RSU Centennial Center. Proceeds from the popular holiday event will benefit services at the domestic abuse shelter, which now serves three times the number of victims. The festive event will begin at 6 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by the live auction at 7:30. Trees, large and small that have been decorated by individuals and businesses in a variety of styles and themes, will be on display and auctioned off during the evening. “We are still looking for individuals, businesses and organizations to design, decorate and donate Christmas trees,” says Assistant Director Susan Wolfenbarger. Each large tree (seven to nine feet) must be pre-lit and decorated using a holiday theme. Trees can be decorated on site on December 5 and 6 until 2 p.m. Smaller three-foot trees
can be decorated in any theme. “For example, some smaller trees have chosen a sports theme in the past,” she says. “Whether large or small, each artificial tree must be new and delivered to the RSU Centennial Center by December 5.” The trees, wreaths and a host of holiday items will be showcased in live and silent auctions along with other wonderful items, including a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino package. Auctioneer Jim Smith always makes for an exciting evening. In the past, live and silent auction items have included bed and breakfast retreats and limousine wine tours. “Last year we added an outdoor winter décor category,” says Wolfenbarger. “We auctioned off the 30-day use of a beautiful life-size outdoor metal sleigh and reindeer as a lawn display. We deliver the display the day after the auction and then pick it up after New Years.” A plaque on the sleigh will now feature the name of each donor who purchases the
display for use. Names will continue to be added each year. A fun new event added this year is a wine pull. With a beautiful display of various wines – reds, whites and roses – individuals can pull a bottle from the rack for $20. Although participants will know the variety of wine, based on the colored satin bags they are packaged in, they won’t know the kind of wine until the bottle is pulled from its bag. “It’s a fun version of a surprise bottle,” says Development Director Nancy Phelps. “There will be at least 50 bottles available. It will be a gathering place where people can watch as a person pulls their bottle from the rack to reveal their prize, which they get to take home and enjoy afterward.” According to Phelps, "Safenet's Festival of Trees will continue our tradition of offering an all-inclusive ticket price for wine and hors d'oeuvres. It’s a kick-off to the holidays for a lot of people, and we’ve become known for our holiday spirit.”
Donna Grabow, executive director of Safenet Services, stands beside one of the many beautifully decorated trees donated to the annual Festival of Trees Gala & Auction to benefit the domestic abuse shelter.
Sponsors, to date, for this year’s event include: Winn and Kay Ingersoll, Jack Kissee Ford, RCB Bank, Grand Bank, Buck Willis – CPA, Hillcrest Hospital – Claremore, Pelco Structural, MC Petroleum, Asset Industrial, RCI Insurance, UPCO, Dr. Helen Franklin, Joe Don Eaves, Stephen Guilfoyle, Karen Smith, Barbara Ingram, Andy Wills, Connie Jessina and the Grabow Gals. "We are grateful to the community for continuing to make this event successful," says Wolfenbarger. "We are
dependent on the community to help support the services we provide to women and children. Currently, we are helping 23 children and 12 adults that have been traumatized by abuse." SStick to a Budget This Holiday Season Rachel Stephens shares her money management practices.
By Jocelyn Wood
Gift for mom and dad. Check. Presents for the girls. Check. Gift for sweetie. Check. Now, what to buy for my BFF and other closest friends? Ah, the holidays, a time when we are all too often
tempted to toss out our budgets and splurge on friends and family. It’s the season of giving, and besides, I enjoy giving gifts. So, is it possible to stay on budget without compromising my gift giving?
Rachel Stephens of Owasso suggests using the benefits of your bank to plan for holiday spending, like using a prepaid VISA card to keep you on budget.
“Yes, it is,” said Rachel Stephens, RCB Bank employee who knows a thing or two about spending wisely. “I live on a tight budget, but that doesn’t mean I skip the gifts during the holidays. I simply plan for it.” Stephens shares some of her personal money planning practices: Plan ahead. “I believe a person needs to budget ahead of a holiday shopping trip, so they don’t get caught up in the pressure to buy, buy, buy and then have to figure out how to climb out of the hole they fall in,” Stephens said. “Me personally, I use my company’s Christmas deduction plan. I choose how much money to have taken out of my check each month and RCB Bank withholds it for me until the holiday season. It’s the ultimate plan; does the work for me.” If your company doesn’t offer a similar program, use the benefits of your bank. Ask them what more they can offer beyond traditional banking. “For instance, one of my customers has several accounts with us and has access to all of them but one through her online banking,” Stephens said. “I asked her if
she wanted to add it; she said no. She was putting money in, yet didn’t want to see it, like a silent savings. “Your bank may also offer prepaid VISA cards*, said Stephens. “Set your budget, put only that amount on the card and use it for holiday shopping.” How else can you use your bank’s services to plan ahead? Price shop. “This is easiest to do online,” Stephens said. “I comparison shop, then plan my gifts. My priority is my kids first, then family and friends. I shop more online than in the past to find unique items instead of always going the same old stores, trying to come up with something new and different. I look for free shipping and online specials that can help save me money. Delivery to my doorstep is a bonus.” Leave emotion out. “Life is about making smart choices, not emotional choices,” said Stephens. “Woman can easily get fixated on things. We get giddy when we see something we really want and then we’ve got to have it. I say sleep on it, for a week. By then the emotion is
gone. If you still want it, wait for store specials. Take the spontaneity out, so rather than regret, you can really enjoy it better.” Think outside the spending box. “I like to personalize gifts, so often times I put a unique piece together, like a mosaic frame,” Stephens said. “Saves me money and I create a more meaningful gift.” To Stephens gift giving isn’t about spending money; it’s about spending time and creating memories. “It takes effort to make a gift but it’s worth it,” she said. “And, if I’m going to give a gift card, say to a pottery shop or winery, I’d rather include myself in the trip, so memories are made. It adds much more value to the gift.” With a little planning and creativity, you too can take the pressure off holiday spending this year. *Be sure to ask your bank about any fees or hidden charges that may be associated with a prepaid VISA card. SSnoring Can Be a Danger Sign Dr. Gene Drake and Dr. Jayson Voto are saving lives by screening and treating patients for sleep apnea and snoring. By Sheryl Sowell
Dr. Gene Drake and Dr. Jayson Voto from Drake & Voto Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Owasso aren’t your typical dentists. Although extremely familiar with crowns and bridges, cavities and
cosmetics, this dental practice is redefining the dental industry, one snoring patient at a time. According to the Sleep Association, over 80 percent of people remain undiagnosed with obstructive
sleep apnea (OSA), and it’s assumed more physicians would implement greater OSA screening protocols. Interestingly enough, dentists such as Dr. Drake and Dr. Voto are among the small group of

practitioners stepping up to offer Oral Appliance Therapy to treat patients for snoring and sleep apnea. With the help of technology and dental continuing education courses, Dr. Drake and Dr. Voto have established a proper sleep protocol, which includes patient screening, home sleep testing, Oral Appliance Therapy, and the use of a special screening and titration technology called the Pharyngometer and the Rhinometer. “I’ve done the restorative part of dentistry for over 34 years, but treating obstructive sleep apnea, I can say I have changed people’s lives, and this is very rewarding to me,” says Dr. Drake. Dr. Drake made his first oral appliance years ago for a patient who was nervous to fly due to her heavy snoring. “I later found out from my training that I had treated her for obstructive sleep apnea. A few months later she came back in, and not only did we cure her snoring, but she was more rested in the morning, blood pressure was down, she lost a few pounds, and she felt better than she had in a long time due to a more restful night’s sleep.” Dr. Voto and Dr. Drake have been offering treatment ever since. Physical and mental manifestations of obstructive sleep apnea include weight gain, hormonal imbalances, headaches, inability to concentrate, depression,
Page 21
hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, to name a few. Dr. Voto and Dr. Drake are using custom fabricated oral appliances to treat patients, which hold the mandible in place, allowing for oxygen to pass through without any obstructions or blockages. This technique is called Oral Appliance Therapy, and is a proven method of treatment, yielding high patient compliance rates. “I’m excited to be able to offer my help in treating such a serious and potentially life threatening condition. Not only can we improve a patient’s health, we can also greatly enhance their quality of life. People who are at risk should be tested. Our take home sleep test makes this process simple,” says Dr. Voto. If you snore, or have any of the symptoms listed, please call for an initial screening appointment. At Drake & Voto Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, the team will take singular care of you and your family during each and every visit. No matter what kind of cosmetic, preventive, or restorative dentistry you need, they aim to always go the extra mile for your smile. For more information, contact

GGet Cash Fast and Easy Let Rogers County Pawn provide you a short-term loan for your holiday shopping needs.
By Cassie Woods
Rogers County Pawn is a locally owned pawn shop specializing in short-term collateralized cash loans on most items of value. It’s also a great place to find exceptional deals on new and pre-owned quality merchandise. Located on Highway 20 just east of Claremore, it has made getting fast loans, offering quality merchandise and providing great customer
service a priority since opening its doors in April 2012. “We are family owned and dedicated to providing excellent service to our customer,” said Andrew Ross, owner. “We know your items have value and we will lend you as much as possible. In addition to our pawn services, we also offer a place for customers to sell unwanted

items or buy high quality merchandise at or near half off retail prices.” People often need to borrow small amounts of money that banks and other lenders are not willing to provide. A person has a low chance of getting a $300 or smaller loan from a financial institution for a 30 to 60 day period. The cost of the paperwork alone makes it unprofitable for banks to make these types of small loans. This has caused the popularity of pawn shops to rise. Rogers County Pawn accepts practically any item that can be valued and stored as collateral on a loan. The most common items they see are jewelry, firearms, diamonds, hand and power tools, musical instruments, bicycles, televisions and other home electronics, antiques and coins. These items maintain their value over a reasonable period of time and are easy to store. They also allow customers to provide tangible collateral, eliminating the need to distinguish high risk from low risk borrowers. Loans from Rogers County Pawn can be as small as $5 or as high as $5,000, depending

on the value of the collateral. “We understand that our line of business, in general, has a less than a stellar reputation,” said Ross. “But we work very hard to make our pawn shop the exception to that reputation and provide a true benefit to our customers.” When an item is brought in for pawn, Ross and his staff will first ask how much money is needed. Then they will carefully evaluate the item in order to lend the maximum amount. They always try to meet the customers’ needs when possible. If an amount is agreed upon by both parties, loans are given immediately. All collateral loans are carefully documented on a pawn ticket that includes the item’s description, the amount borrowed and the interest that will be due. Loans are made for 30 days, with an additional 30-day grace period. Customers can pay off their loan at any time in that 60-day period. The pay-off amount includes the original principal and accumulated interest. If a customer is unable to pay off the entire loan, he can pay the accumulated interest charges

and renew the loan for another 60-day period. A loan on a pledged item may be extended indefinitely as long as interest charges are paid within each grace period. Additionally, customers may have as many collateral loans as is necessary for their situation. “People should never worry about the security of their items in pawn,” said Ross. “We are licensed, bonded and insured, and you are absolutely guaranteed to get your valuables back when you repay your loan. Pawn shops are bound by state statute to carefully and responsibly care for pledged items. In fact, these items are often safer in pawn than they are in someone’s home.” Any customer is welcome to come in and sell their unwanted items for cash or to shop the inventory at Rogers County Pawn. In order to pledge an item and receive a loan, customers must be 18 or older and present a stateissued photo ID. To best serve its customers, Rogers County Pawn is open six days a week. Their hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed on Sundays.

FFall Into a New Look
Update your look this season at The Village Salon & Butterfly Kisses Day Spa. By Carol Beck-Round
Amy Lavender and Chrissy Barney welcome you to The Village Salon & Butterfly Kisses Day Spa.
Fall is here! The Village Salon & Butterfly Kisses Day Spa has a lot going on to celebrate the season during the month of November. “Now is a great opportunity to change your hairstyle to include fall colors,” says Amy Lavender, stylist. “It’s time to lose those summer ponytails and get back to layers and bobs. Nothing looks better with your accessory scarves and boots than a cropped, layered look with copper and blonde highlights.” November also marks the one-year anniversary of The Village Salon’s new ownership. Chrissy Barney, owner and stylist, and Amy are looking forward to celebrating by offering their clients specials throughout the month. “Our specials will include up to three colors, a cut and style,” says Amy. The salon, located near Cato at 614 S. Lynn Riggs Blvd., offers many hair care products to help you achieve your new look. “We would also love to help style your hair,” adds Amy. The salon recently began offering contour full body
The staff of Rice Funeral Service would like to invite you to join us for our annual holiday Tree of Remembrance Service to be held in our chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8th, 2013. This special service is for families who have lost a loved one, either recently or in the past. Each person who attends will receive a crystal angel ornament personalized with their loved one's name. At this holiday service, a time will be allotted for guests to share treasured memories of loved ones, fellowship with others and enjoy light refreshments. If you will be attending please help us plan by calling the funeral home at 918-341-0376 by Monday, December 2nd, so we can prepare your ornament. We will be gathering gifts for the Community Toy Room again this year. If you'd like to participate, we encourage you to bring an unwrapped, new toy either to the service on the 8th, or at any time before if you don't plan to attend. Gifts shared each year bring smiles to many children in our area. It is our hope that this Tree of Remembrance Service will be a way for you to remember and honor your loved one this holiday season. We look forward to seeing you.

wraps by M’lis. The M’lis Contour Body Wrap cream helps achieve a healthy and permanent loss of 4 to 14 inches, while maintaining proper hydration. Chrissy, who emphasizes that this is not a water loss wrap, became interested in the holistic approach that gets rid of the toxins in your body after losing her father to cancer several years ago. “My mother is also suffering from Alzheimer’s and I realized that if I wanted to be around to see my three daughters grow up, I needed to take better care of myself,” she says. “It was an awakening for me. I like the product because it works from the inside out, leaving you energetic.” Wraps also help to remove cellulite by targeting and removing the toxins trapped in the connective tissue, then soothing, healing and stimulating tissue growth, increasing skin elasticity and improving the skin’s firmness. To maintain the benefits of the body wrap, you must stay well hydrated, eat a healthy diet and exercise. “Fall is a great time to get ready for all the holiday parties with a toned new body, feeling refreshed and losing inches,” adds Chrissy. The Village Salon carries a wide variety of products, including Matrix, Chi, Aquage, Redken and

30th Annual Christmas Home Tour and Craig and Jessica Wilbourn at 14823 E. Fieldstone Dr. N. “Each of the homes will be decorated for the holidays according to the personalities of each individual family and are sure to inspire the Christmas spirit in tour attendees,” said Becker. “We will also have Junior Ocieleta members present at each home to welcome all who attend and answer any questions. Individuals, families, groups and even bus tours are invited to attend, though we do ask large groups and bus tours to call in advance for accommodations.” In addition to the four wonderful homes on the tour, Junior Ocieleta will
also be bringing back their craft fair. The new and improved event, coined the Stop, Shop & Snack, will include numerous crafters and vendors with booths featuring items such as Christmas decorations, gifts, crafts, jewelry, baked goods, home accessories, clothing, repurposed furniture and much more. The Stop, Shop & Snack will be held at The Hidden Porch located at 4883 E. Hwy 266 in Catoosa. Lunch will also be available at the Pecan Porch next door. Attendees are encouraged to come out and enjoy delicious food, beautiful views and unique Christmas shopping. “The location of the Stop, Shop & Snack truly is a hidden gem in our commu-
continued from page 1 nity, and we are so excited to partner with the Hidden Porch to offer the event,” said Snyder. “We are confident our regular attendees will be very happy to have this replacement for the usual craft fair back as part of the event.” To date, this year’s Home Tour Sponsors include Bob’s Printing, Claremore Eye Associates, Crumpton, Rex & Sherry, Elizabeth Jean Salon, Guy Engineering, Hidden Porch, Community Home Health, Hillary’s Boutique, M&M Enterprises LLC, Melton Sales, Nesting Necessities, RCB Bank, Rogers State University, Sanders Concrete Construction and Women’s Healthcare of Rogers County.

items that easily blend with a more traditional setting. The look is still rustic and still elegant, yet far more flexible when it comes to decorating. The risk was big, but worth it. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., they will celebrate their first year under this new concept with an Anniversary Sale. “We were overwhelmed with the way our customers fell in love with our new merchandise,” says Robin. “And we hope people who have never visited will come in to see us this weekend.” Every item of merchandise in the store will be on sale during the three-day event. On Saturday, smoked meats will be available for lunch. All three days, from noon to 3 p.m., will be a Thanksgiving turkey craft for kids; the craft is something that parents will want to keep and pull out for their decor every year! In addition, they will hold daily drawings for a $100 gift card to the store. Clinton and Robin travel extensively to select quality merchandise from vendors who share their passion for customer service. “We work with people who, like us, do whatever it takes to get the job done well,” says Clinton. The same holds true for their catalog partners. If customers don’t see exactly what they want on the floor, they
can browse through dozens of catalogs. Or they can have their idea custom designed into reality. Many people building their dream homes have relied on The Refuge Lifestyle to develop their own signature look. Entertainment areas and man caves are especially popular for personalizing. Taxidermy service is available, as well as custom lighting. If a remodeling project is in the future, they can give any room a complete makeover. The Taylors have welcomed people from all the surrounding states and as far away as New York. They have shipped furniture throughout the country. Social media and a monthly newsletter play an important role in keeping in touch with their customers near and far. Clinton and Robin welcome the opportunity to share all that their unique store has to offer. The Refuge Lifestyle is just west of Memorial on 151st Street and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

continued from page 1 win.
“A third drawing of $1,000 cash prize does not require you to be present to win,” says Dell Davis, Claremore Chamber of Commerce executive director. The first ticket will be posted on Sunday, December 22 on the Chamber website and in the Claremore Daily Progress. If the Santa Cash ticket is not presented at the Chamber office for that particular week by Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the noon deadline, a new number will be posted. The final weekly ticket posting, if no winning ticket has been presented, will be on January 23 with a noon deadline on January 30 at noon to claim the prize. “So even if you are out of town or unable to attend the ‘live’ drawing, you still have the opportunity to win $1,000,” Davis adds. “The Santa Cash promotion is twofold,” says Julie Simmons, committee chair. “It rewards shoppers and is a boost to local retail and service participants during the holiday season.” Davis adds, “This is a tremendous opportunity to keep holiday sales in our community. Every dollar spent in our community can recirculate up to seven times, not to mention the benefits of the sales tax dollars working in and for Claremore. Our tax dollars help pay for police, fire services, roads, and parks and recreation.” Davis also cites the variety of businesses who participate in Santa Cash. “With restaurants, car dealerships, tire stores and retail shops in the community, there is really no reason to leave Claremore to shop.” Santa Claus Sponsor and host facility is the Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs; Mrs. Claus Sponsor, Suburban Chevrolet; Candy Cane Ticket sponsor,

Mind, Body and Soul Balance M Licensed Massage Therapist Eva Norris loves helping better her clients’ lives through massage.
By Susan Erler
Bringing balance to the body, mind and soul for each person who walks through her door may seem like a lofty goal to achieve. But that is what local licensed Massage Therapist Eva Norris strives to accomplish every day. Eva is the owner of Eva’s Waterfall Retreat, located at 9382 E. Hwy. 20 in Claremore. Eva has been taking care of clients in the Rogers County area since 2001. A veteran in the spa and massage industry, she utilizes her years of experience to enhance the quality of life for all who visit her. When she first discovered massage years ago, she was instantly hooked, and it has been her life’s work ever since. “I love being able to help my clients live a better life,” she explains. “Although many think that getting a massage is simply a way to pamper your body, there are so many more health benefits than that.” The benefits of massage have been proven through the centuries. Just a few of these include: improved circulation, which helps eliminate toxins from your system; strengthening the musculoskeletal system; helping alleviate stress and tension; aiding in weight loss;
Eva Norris, owner of Eva’s Waterfall Retreat, with a relaxed client.
and managing chronic pain. Eva uses several techniques during her sessions, including Shiatsu, Swedish and Oriental massage, and reflexology. “Many clients are surprised to find an increased boost in their energy level after seeing me. It’s certainly healthier than drinking energy drinks,” says Eva. Probably the most rewarding aspect of her business is when she is able to assist those who are suffering from chronic pain. “In essence, I help give them back a more normal life, and there is nothing better than that.” As a certified reflexologist, Eva explains
that this therapy is good for everyone. The main trigger points on the human body are the hands, feet, and head. Using this natural means for stress relief is a time honored method. “Many cultures have used reflexology for thousands of years. It is amazing that our ancestors knew so much about ways to stay healthy without using medications,” says Eva. During a typical appointment, Eva will spend time consulting with her client, asking questions that will help her decide which treatment will give maximum results. Providing a customized session is crucial
in making sure time spent is focused on achieving the best result. Migraine headaches, swelling of the feet and ankles, chronic pain and even digestive issues can be improved through the use of massage techniques. A few clients have come to see Eva as a last resort after years of doctor visits and medications that were not helpful in giving them relief. “I am always thrilled when I hear that someone has been able to achieve relief through natural means,” says Eva. “That is really a testament to how amazing the human body is; we have an uncanny ability to heal ourselves when we give it the right assistance.” Eva’s sessions can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an entire day, depending on the treatments you choose. Eva also offers gift certificates, available for purchase either at the salon, or she can take your information over the phone and email them to you. For a complete listing of services offered and pricing, simply log on to www.evaswaterfallretreat.com. Eva works by appointment only in order to spend time with her family including four children and four grandchildren, and she is
Page 29
proud to say that she has one more grandchild on the way. Her days to come in to her salon are typically Monday, Thursday, and Friday. She also works two Saturdays a month. She understands that some people are reluctant to have a massage because of fear of the unknown. Eva assures all of her clients that her top priority is for them to feel comfortable. “My clients range in age from 12 to 90. Some feel better keeping some clothing on while others are okay completely disrobing. It is always up to them, and I keep them covered with sheets at all times,” she states. “The best thing to do is just schedule an appointment and then we can decide what is best for you. Even if you come in for a 30 minute foot detox, you will reap the benefits and feel better and be healthier.” The final piece to the puzzle for living a healthier life is by giving our body proper nutrition. Eva sells Limu nutritional supplements at her business, and she is happy to show you each one to see if they would benefit you. These products have been featured on many national programs including the Dr. Oz Show and Oprah. For more information, contact

HHats Off to Will The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club will celebrate Will Rogers’ birthday with their annual Wreath Laying Ceremony on November 2.
By Debra West
The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum kick off the 75th year of celebrating Will’s birthday, together, during Will Rogers Days this November. A variety of events are planned to honor Oklahoma’s favorite
son. Will Rogers was born at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch near Oologah on November 4, 1879 in then Indian Territory. He died August 15, 1935 in an Alaska plane crash. The Will Rogers Days grand parade on Will Rogers
Boulevard will be at 10 a.m. on November 2, featuring country music legend Larry Gatlin as Parade Marshall. Mr. Gatlin starred as Will Rogers in the Broadway production of “The Will Rogers Follies.” After the parade, the
Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club invite you to join them for “Hats off to Will” for a traditional Cherokee feast at 12:30 at the Will Rogers Memorial, honoring Will, one of the most notable members of the prestigious Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club. The Pocahontas Club was founded in 1899, and is a virtual “who’s who” of the founding families in Indian Territory. At 1:30 p.m., in the theater at the Will Rogers Memorial, the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club will honor the Will Rogers family, community leaders,
Cherokee Principal Chief Bill John Baker, as well as Native American Month and special guest Larry Gatlin, followed by a traditional ceremony at the Rotunda and a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of Will Rogers. From the time the Memorial was dedicated, this is the 75th year the Pocahontas Club has laid the wreath. It was a tradition of Will Rogers’ mother, Mary, to decorate their ranch home with fall foliage, said Debra West, Pocahontas Club president. For information regarding the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club, “Hats off to Will” celebration, contact Ollie Starr (918) 760-7499, and for information regarding the Will Rogers Days Parade contact the Rotary Club of Claremore Reveille, Steve Gragert (918) 343-8118. Additional events celebrating Will Rogers Days (November 1-4) include Children’s Day at the Museum, Night at the Museum (a ticketed event), an Antique and Classic Car Show, a birthday party celebration at the Birthplace Ranch and more.
