JJohn Deere and a Whole Lot Mower P&K Equipment, an authorized John Deere equipment dealer, sets the industry bar at its highest level.

By Duane Blankenship

P&K Equipment was formed in 1985. Company owner is Dr. Barry Pollard of Pollard Farms. Dr. Pollard is also a leading neurosurgeon known around the country for his skills and expertise. Currently, there are 19 P&K Equipment stores in Oklahoma and Iowa. The P&K Owasso location has been on East 66th Street North since February of 2009. It is a showplace for shopping and purchasing John Deere implements and equipment plus several other complementary brands. This store operates under the supervision and direction of Site Manager Randal Bobbitt. As soon as you drive onto the Owasso P&K Equipment property, you are struck by its size and cleanliness, as well as the amount of product inventory neatly displayed throughout the lot. Walk inside the store and the feeling continues. The employees are professional, polite, and immediately available to answer questions and assist you. Some of the equipment you’ll see includes

lawnmowers and other lawn care products, John Deere Gators, tractors, rakes, combines, balers and mower conditioners. You'll also find chainsaws, trimmers and Commercial Worksite Products. “Whether you’re a farmer, rancher, or homeowner, we’ve got a complete lineup of products to fit your needs,” said Bobbitt. The store also carries a huge inventory of John Deere toys and apparel for

children and adults. Bobbitt’s management team includes Service Manager Eric Gier, Ag Shop Foreman Fred Peters, Parts Manager Dennis Kastner, and Lawn & Garden Service Foreman Chris Scarpa. “Our great inventory of products and parts is complemented by our outstanding support staff,” said Bobbitt. “We have 35 outstanding employees, and I consider their hiring to be one of my greatest

achievements. Each individual contributes to the professionalism and success of our operation.” The P&K service department is staffed by master certified technicians who must complete a minimum of 16 hours training per year through John Deere. The store also has Stihl certified technicians who service all hand-held Stihl products. “We consider our techs to be some of the

best in the business and each is highly skilled, knowledgeable, and professional in performing their jobs,” added Bobbitt. P&K believes that business is all about the people, both the employees and their customers. Randal Bobbitt says he tells his employees nearly every day, “Customer satisfaction – not just customer service – is the real name of the game.” When a customer completes a transaction at P&K Equipment in Owasso, he wants them to leave thinking that they can’t wait to come back to the store again. “We have a great P&K team and we will keep trying to differentiate ourselves from everyone else,” he adds. “We are passionate about what we do and how we satisfy our customers.”

CCould Your Old Driveway Use Some Curb Appeal? LCI Concrete specializes in concrete driveways, patios and other flatwork.

By Duane Blankenship As a homeowner in northeastern Oklahoma, you’ve probably already discovered that winter snow, ice and corrosive salt take their toll on your home’s driveway. Given a little time and a few hard winters, most of us have witnessed firsthand the pitting and flaking that begins defacing our driveways. The deterioration gradually worsens until it has a definite negative effect on your home’s curb appeal and even its value. There is, however, a simple way to get rid of that old “eye sore” leading up to your garage, while greatly improving the curb

appeal. LCI Concrete is in business to remove driveways, patios, and other concrete flatwork that is showing signs of damage for one reason or another. They then replace the damaged concrete with the finest concrete and strengthening materials available. Kalan Paul is the owner of LCI Concrete and has more than 20 years of experience in his chosen field, serving both commercial and residential customers. His company has specialized in the pouring and scoring of concrete driveways,

patios and most other flatwork including sidewalks. Kalan attended Northeastern State University, and he and his wife, Aimee, reside in Broken Arrow with their four children. LCI is fully insured and is a member in good standing with both the Broken Arrow and Tulsa chambers of commerce. “We have but one goal,” said Kalan, “and that is to make every customer proud of their new LCI concrete product that will serve them well for years and years to come.” When one approaches your property, their first image is influenced by the driveway. If it’s unsightly with corrosion and flaking, it’s not going to make a good impression. Kalan says concrete is durable, and when the soil and concrete are properly prepared and poured, you can expect it to last for at least 20 to 30 years. And you will rest easy knowing that LCI has the knowledge to do the job right each time. Replacing a damaged driveway is not inexpensive, but with its expected lifespan it might be a good investment and add value to your home. Concrete brightens up the areas around our homes and businesses at night. It is also an environmentally-friendly product because it is composed of renewable resources that can be

The average driveway takes about two days to break out, remove, prep, pour, and score. LCI first lays 3/8-inch rebar on industry recommended 2-foot grid patterns after the subsurface has been properly and professionally prepared. Using industry standards of 3500 psi, LCI then pours and finishes the concrete. These standards are incorporated into every job they do. You may drive on your new driveway three days after the concrete is poured. Here’s a great tip from

Kalan: “Do your concrete driveway and yourself a favor by using only clean sand on winter ice or snow covering it. Your driveway will last much longer.” Add curb appeal to your home by replacing your ugly, pitted, corroding driveway. Call Kalan at LCI Concrete for a free estimate.

RRe-Leaf for Your Trees S&W Tree Specialists offer services that can possibly save your dying trees.

By Duane Blankenship

S&W Tree Specialists is a well-respected, family-owned and operated business. The company provides tree care, plant healthcare, property maintenance, tree pruning, turf care, and emergency storm services to businesses and homeowners throughout northeastern Oklahoma. Dale Hughes and his wife, Leilani, Bryan Mersburgh, and Robby Mizumura are the principals running daily operations. There is always a certified and trained arborist and tree care safety professional available to answer your questions about trees, plants or lawns. Estimates for services are free with no obligation. Bryan tells us that they are still seeing lots of dead trees in the metro Tulsa area and throughout northeastern Oklahoma. “We’re seeing lots of maples that have been stressed to their limits with the extreme heat of past summers. Don’t put off getting dead trees removed from your property,” he cautions. As dead trees continue to stand, they become more susceptible to breakage, falling limbs, and

causing damage to property and people. As time goes by, rotten trees become increasingly more hazardous to the owner, to those who pass near them, to your property, and to those who are hired to remove the dead trees. Dead and dying trees are also susceptible to disease, many of which are carried by insects. When you’re sick or sustain a wound or injury to your body, you get it treated as quickly as possible. RReveal Clear Skin Embrace fresher, clearer skin with a custom acne treatment at Reveal Salon. By Stephanie Reed It is no surprise that many of us devote plenty of attention to heart-healthy foods and liver-boosting nutrients; however, many still neglect the body’s largest organ, our skin. It just so happens that this particular organ is, in many cases, responsible for first impressions and self-image. Unfortunately, millions of people of all ages battle skin conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation and fine lines each year. Reveal Salon’s Nicole McGinnis is on a mission to help unburden locals suffering under these afflictions with custom corrective treatments. Nicole, an esthetician of 15 years, understands that not all skin conditions are created equally, and as such, cannot be treated equally. Unlike many popular skin care companies, she does not subscribe to a one-sizefits-all approach to treatment. Instead, she utilizes a program called Face Reality. With the help of this system, she is able to

personalize and adjust each treatment based on skin tone, lifestyle, food allergies, and more. The treatments, which take about 45 minutes to complete, are administered every two weeks until skin reaches 90 percent clarity. One client, Aubrey Loney, a longtime acne sufferer, recently sang the praises of these treatments via social media. “Nicole McGinnis has been doing light peels and light treatments on my skin for a couple of months to treat my acne. I had tried everything and could not get rid of it. She is wonderful!” This tale of success is not an isolated one. Nicole attributes these results to the education that she provides her clients at the beginning of treatment. “Most people need treatment and preventative measures,” Nicole explains. “I caution clients that this isn’t a one-time fix, but it is effective. It is important that clients come in for an education about both the

custom treatments and at-home care.” Nicole opened her full service salon just over a year ago. “It is hard to find the right place. I wanted a place to carry on my work as well as offer nails, hair and a master barber. I have that place in Reveal,” Nicole says. After enjoying the successes of custom treatments, clients have routinely expressed a desire for a makeup line that works with skin prone to acne and breakouts. With this in mind, Nicole has recently adopted a makeup line that boasts only four ingredients, and it is proven to nurture sensitive skin rather than aggravate it: Mineral Hygenics. Nicole’s makeup choice contains a chemical free SPF, inert materials, which discourage mold and fungus while increasing the makeup’s shelf life, and no irritants. There is no reason to suffer from problematic skin any longer; start nurturing your epidermis

By John Owen

The Castle of Muskogee's Halloween Festival features events from not scary to very scary.

Expect something different at the 2013 Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee. Eleven great Halloween events, one incredible location: 3400 West Fern Mountain Road in Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park. You’ll find thrills for the entire family, both inside and outside the Castle, located a short 35 minute drive from Tulsa on the Muskogee Turnpike. As the brave among you enter the 10,000-square-foot Dark Castle, you will be issued an infrared assault weapon that fires special “zombie bullets” to protect yourself and kill zombies while you search for survivors of the raging zombie wars inside. For you other courageous souls, try a walk through the woods along the Trail of Blood where the lost souls of those who have gone before will guide you; the Torture Chamber shows what really happened in medieval times in the depths of the dungeons; Casa Morte is a

labyrinth through the 12th Century Castle with doom and mystery around every corner; Domus Horrificus takes you to the areas where your favorite horror monsters dwell; the Ultimate Maze where most of you will find your way. For those of you with faint heart, there is always the Haunted Hayride, a trip that is sure to keep you on your toes as you ride through the Halloween Festival grounds; the Enchanted Boardwalk is your chance to stroll on the boardwalk filled with Halloween inflatables; experience live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the Magic of Matthew VanZee and the Raks al Hassana Mummy Dancers. GGet Your Home Holiday Ready A popular service of Camps Construction is providing relaxing, functional outdoor living areas, just in time for the upcoming holidays.

By Deanna Rebro

Exterior landscape of a home or business is the first impression anyone will have, and it’s important to make this impression a good one. A skilled and reliable contractor can make an area both attractive and functional. Camps Construction can do it. Since starting his business in 2005, owner Gerardo Campos has had one satisfied customer after another lead him to residential and commercial jobs building and repairing retaining walls from stone, boulders, DMU blocks, Versa Lok or railroad ties; building drain systems; and installing artistic concrete, patio covers, decorative flooring, driveways and walkways. Popular now, he says, are outdoor kitchens and outdoor living areas. “We can do everything for outdoor kitchens,” says Gerardo. That includes appliances, equipment and storage, landscaping and any other steps to create a customized project. “Just make one call to me and I will get it done.” Pergolas with outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are also popular. A cozy and relaxing space can be created with a

decorative cement floor or stone floor, a pergola and a fireplace up to 72 inches. With the holidays just ahead, people are thinking of ways to spruce up their homes. “I can show them lots

of pictures of my work and give them ideas,” says Gerardo. Many homeowners have already turned otherwise wasted space into “wow” space for both entertainment and relaxation. What makes it

even better is that these extensions are not only beautiful, but they have also added value to their homes. Gerardo believes he has so many happy customers because he understands that

Page 11

everyone’s needs are different; there are no cookie-cutter or one-size-fits-all projects. While some people want to increase privacy, others want to open up space. Some want to take advantage of a spectacular view, and others want to mask an unattractive view. He listens to what each customer tells him – what they must have, what they would love to have and how much they have budgeted for the project. Then he goes to work to come up with options to meet their needs. “I always use the best materials to give customers the best job for the best price,” he says. Every day of every job he is on site to make sure the project is on schedule and his customer is happy. Camps Construction also solves drainage problems for homes and businesses with various options for drain systems, and they do interior remodeling, including stamped concrete flooring and fireplaces. A call to Camps Construction today could mean a finished project in time for the holidays. All estimates are free and all work comes with a materials warranty. Camps Construction is a member of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Oklahoma.

TThe Screwtape Letters Don’t miss “The Screwtape Letters,” theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel, at Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 5 (two performances only!). By Sheryl Sowell

“A humorous and lively stage adaptation...The devil has rarely been given his due more perceptively and eruditely…Clever and satirical,” wrote Wilborn Hampton, The New York Times. “Very smart…richly rewarding…exuberant theatricality!” exclaimed Chris Jones in The

Chicago Tribune. “Wickedly witty. Lewis’ topsy-turvy exercises in inverted moral theology were made to be played with lip-smacking relish!” wrote Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal. Lauded by audiences and critics alike, The Screwtape Letters is a play you won’t

want to miss. For two shows only, The Screwtape Letters will be coming to Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 5, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Call (918) 259-5778 for tickets or stop by the Box Office, 701 S. Main St., Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.

www.ValueNews.com The Screwtape Letters is a smart, provocative and wickedly funny theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel about spiritual warfare from a demon’s point of view. It was a hit in New York City, where it played 309 performances at the Westside Theatre in 2010. Prior to that, it ran for six months in Chicago. It also had two engagements at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. where it played for 10 sold-out weeks. Max McLean, who adapted the novel to the stage and directs the production, says, “The Screwtape Letters is one of the great literary creations of the 20th century, offering an imaginative picture of the spiritual battle that goes on within each of us.” The play, set in an eerily stylish office in hell, follows the clever scheming of Satan’s chief psychiatrist, Screwtape, as he entices a human ‘patient’ toward damnation. In this topsy-turvy, morally inverted universe, God is the “Enemy” and the Devil is “Our Father Below.” The stakes are high as human souls are hell’s primary source of food. As His Abysmal Sublimity Screwtape, awardwinning actor Brent Harris creates a “master of the universe” character who mesmerizes the audience as he allures his unsuspecting “patient” down the “soft, gentle path to Hell.” At his feet is Screwtape’s able assistant, Toadpipe (played by Marissa Molnar and Tamala Bakkensen), a grotesque crea-

ture demon who transforms her elastic body into the paragons of vices and characters Screwtape requires to keep his patient away from the “Enemy.” According to McLean, this work is one of the best examples of reverse psychology in all of literature. “The Screwtape Letters follows two story arcs, that of an unsuspecting human on earth – the ‘patient’ – and Screwtape, whose greatest enemy is God. It is a highly entertaining and provocative theatrical event,” says McLean. “But even beyond that, it is an experience that stays with the audience long after the show has ended. It forces people to contemplate their lives and the choices they make each day.” Along with The Chronicles of Narnia (including The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe), The Great Divorce and Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters is still one of Lewis’ most popular and influential works. The story’s success is due to its piercing insight into human nature and the lucid and humorous way Lewis makes his readers squirm in self recognition. SSuperior Has Its Ducts in a Row Call Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning to help improve your home’s air quality and reduce heating and cooling bills.

By Deanna Rebro

Uneven temperatures throughout your home? It’s a common mystery to many homeowners, so they just live with it and continue to pay high heating and cooling bills for areas that are not properly climate controlled. But it does not have to be that way. Bill Smith of

Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning understands why this happens and what can be done to correct it. According to Bill, in time, metal ductwork in the floors of older homes is prone to rusting. As a house moves, the rusted spots crack and mildew, mold and fungus get into the ducts

Bill Smith can solve your air quality problems and save you money in the long term.

while warm or cool air gets out. The area in disrepair has a noticeably different and often uncomfortable temperature. The solution lies in a one and only EPA-registered air duct sealant that sticks to the holes in the ducts to create an even air flow through the system. The rubbery substance resists any future house movement so cracks cannot reappear. Providing superior air quality while saving people money in the long term is what Bill does best. The native Tulsan has spent more than 22 years in the air duct business. Earlier this year he launched Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning with business partner Adan Vasquez. “I’ve seen what processes work and don’t work in this business. I want to offer solutions that are once and for all, so the same problem does not recur,” he explains. Many homeowners and business owners ask him what can be done to improve the air quality they breathe. Thoroughly cleaning the ducts and coating them is the answer.

The process begins with a free video inspection. A tiny specialized camera makes its way through the ducts to determine their condition. Rust spots, blockages or collapsed sections are quickly identified, as well as the contaminants that have accumulated over time. The customer can watch the procedure on screen with the technician so he or she can see exactly what is causing the problem. As part of Superior’s 8-point process, necessary repairs are made and the ducts are thoroughly cleaned and then coated with a patented product that literally adds years to air systems, as they no longer have to work as hard. The customer saves on monthly heating and cooling bills, and the air remains clean. There are no more buildups to cause health concerns. “This really sets us apart from anyone else,” Bill says. “We have the strongest warranty available – 25 years – and the warranty is transferrable.” If a homeowner decides to sell, the new buyer can be reassigned to the remaining

FREE

warranted period. All the work is done by Superior employees, with a certified air duct technician on every job. They drive company vehicles to each job and wear company uniforms with their names. Video recordings of work processes can be emailed to the customer for later inspection. Later this year Superior will become the first local company to introduce robotic service for commercial customers. A 17x15x12-inch remote-controlled robot will deliver and apply sealant in these larger ducts. National franchises are also in the works. “We’re proud to have our beginnings right here in Tulsa,” says Bill. Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning is Better Business Bureau approved. For a free video inspection, call (918) 576-6650. All major credit cards are accepted. For more information, contact

B-12 is critical for maintaining healthy nerves and a sharp mind. It plays an essential role in the red blood cell formation, metabolism of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

B-Complex is used by many people for an immediate boost in energy, especially in relation to fatigue from poor sleep, nerve damage, diabetes, sciatica, tinnitus, stress or chronic disease. This complex consists of eight B Vitamins which participate in main chemical processes in the body. B-Complex prevents several types of cancers, migraines, heart disease, dementia and many others.

KKids, Give It a Shot Registration for Broken Arrow Youth Basketball runs through October 14, 2013. By Duane Blankenship

The Broken Arrow Youth Basketball Association was developed to serve the City of Broken Arrow and Broken Arrow Schools. The 2013-2014 season is now gearing up for action. Boys and girls teams will be hitting the hardwood through both recreational and select (competitive) leagues. Broken Arrow Youth Basketball is a member of the Indian Nations Basketball Conference that was formed five years ago, with a playing season running from December 7, 2013 through March 1, 2014. Postseason playoffs are scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2014, “Championship Saturday.” Boys teams and girls teams (not co-ed) consisting of first through eighth graders will begin team practice sessions the first week of November. Recreational league rules state that each player on a team will receive playing time in each game. Select or competitive league teams play at a higher level, and

rules do not require that each player has playing time in each game. Broken Arrow teams will compete against clubs from Sand Springs, Coweta, Metro Christian, Bartlesville, Jenks, Owasso, Claremore, Liberty, Bixby, Berryhill and Tulsa, as well as other Broken Arrow teams. Parents of youth who wish to participate in the recreational division may register online at www.bahoops.com October 1 through 14, while space is available. Players in the select league will receive information through their coach as to registration process. Youth living in the Broken Arrow City limits or attending a Broken Arrow School are eligible. Eighth graders trying out for their school team must register during normal registration to guarantee availability. Eligibility is subject to verification. A birth certificate must be on file with the office; coaches will collect those at the first

practice. Sean Dolan grew up in Broken Arrow, graduated from Broken Arrow High School and is president of the Broken Arrow Youth Basketball Association. He also serves as a board member of the Indian Nations Basketball Conference and is the Associate Athletic Director for Development at Oral Roberts University. Games are played on Fridays and Saturdays at the Broken Arrow Community Center. Recreational teams are scheduled to practice each week for one hour or one and a half hours, depending on the age group and space available. Select league teams have no restriction on the number of times they may practice each week. “Last year we had 72 registered teams, the most since joining the Indian Nations Basketball Conference,” said Dolan, “and we expect that many or more kids to register this year.” For more detailed

441st Annual Arts and Crafts Benefit Bazaar Join ESA for a day of fun, family and friends as you support others while shopping.

By Christopher Davis

The holiday season is fast approaching and with it, the perfect excuse to shop! This season, consider picking out the perfect gift while supporting local artisans and the community at the same time. Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) Sorority’s Alpha Rho Chapter in Broken Arrow hosts their 41st annual Arts and Crafts Benefit Bazaar on Saturday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oliver Middle School. Every year, over a hundred booths showcase a broad range of handmade products, such as holiday decorations, wood crafts, jewelry, baby and children’s clothes, dried and silk flower arrangements, candles, college-themed crafts and clothes, and much more. Admission is free, and there is plenty of convenient parking at the school. Drinks and hot food will be available throughout the day. Kids’ activities are planned too, including a make-it-and-takeit booth, where children can create their own crafts and bring them home afterward.

ESA Alpha Rho publicity committee co-chairs JoAnn Bierig and Bev Schwarzkopf show off some of their favorite crafts.

Keep an eye out for drawings and raffles with some special prizes. In all, a full day of fun and shopping is planned – all located under one roof, and supporting an organization that does tremendous work in the community. Thousands come from all over Green Country to shop

and support the Arts and Crafts Benefit Bazaar, and this year will be no different. It is not too late for interested vendors to register. Booths are $45 with an additional $3 fee for access to electricity. Exhibitors donate 10 percent of sales to ESA, helping support the many

local, state and national charities with which they partner. Over the years, ESA’s Alpha Rho Chapter has raised more than $240,000 for charities. Some of the local organizations that ESA Alpha Rho partners with include Meals on Wheels, Broken Arrow Neighbors, Margaret Hudson Program and Clarehouse. The sorority has also funded scholarships and provided backpacks for students in Broken Arrow. At the state level, ESA supports the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee and the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur. Nationally, ESA partners with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – a longtime collaboration which has helped raise over $176 million toward pediatric cancer research. ESA Alpha Rho in Broken Arrow contributes to the community in a variety ways, beyond simply fundraising. “Many members volunteer at other charities, including St. John’s Hospital and the Tulsa Zoo,” says Bev

Schwarzkopf, co-chair of the event publicity committee. JoAnn Bierig, fellow cochair, adds, “ESA members also volunteer in public schools, often serving as test monitors for exams.” Whether you are searching for that perfect unique gift for a loved one or treating yourself, you are sure to find what you are looking for at the ESA Alpha Rho 41st annual Arts and Crafts Benefit Bazaar. The only thing better than discovering your next favorite craft item is helping others in the process. Join ESA for a fun day with your family and community on Saturday, October 26. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR NEXT PAIR OF EYE GLASSES Do you have a strong prescription? Are you walking around with an unfilled prescription in your pocket? Did you know it is best to get it filled ASAP? Do you realize that strong RX’s DEMAND greater precision with optical center, Bi-focal and MRP placement? Have you had problems with the vision and fit you may have received at shops that herd you through like cattle?

Are you hard to fit? Large or small hat size with eyes set close over the nasal area combined with the lower ear syndrome means you need an experienced optician to fit you and keep your eyewear maintained.

Are you tired of feeling baited by unrealistic prices? Only to find out that the eyewear is stripped-down S.V. versions that are cheap, unattractive, fit improperly, scratch and break easily. Many won’t hold adjustments and just don’t have the features you need.

Have you tried conventional surfaced no-line progressives in the past and failed to adapt? Technological advances in “DIGITAL” lens manufacturing have radically improved the optics, fields of vision and dramatically reduced distortion so that almost anyone can wear them. Check out the Seiko Perfas Prestige II on the first two YouTube videos at the bottom of our homepage. These lenses could be extremely helpful to contact lens wearers, those who wear readers over contacts, and those who cannot or will not rely on corrective surgery for their visual correction needs.

Did you know that Precision Optical has been operating since 1994? Located at the northwest corner of 81st and Elm Place in Broken Arrow, we are one of the VERY FEW optical shops that can do emergency gold soldering of your broken eyeglass frames. We can also replace worn and scratched lenses in your fine sunglasses with gray or brown polarized lenses.

You should get your eyes examined every 1-2 years and more often if medical conditions warrant. The eye exam is a two-fold procedure. 1.) Medical health 2.) Corrective refraction. Many are pleasantly surprised to find they see much better after the exam and new lenses, when originally they had felt they had not changed much. Call us today to set up an eye exam!

Precision Optical stocks 800-1000 frames and sunglasses including: Christian Dior · Liz Claiborne · Ralph Lauren · Covergirl · Kenneth Cole · Marchon & Flexon · Tura & Turaflex Ted Baker · Charmant · Dana Buchman · Maui Jim/RX · Wily X/RX · Norma Kamali · And much more!

The key is PRECISION MEASUREMENT and TOTAL ACCURACY. For the past 18 years, George has provided superior service in Broken Arrow, Coweta and South Tulsa and yes, he cuts the lenses himself.

TThat Johnson Boy’s Music Cory Johnson celebrates the release of his new CD at Main Street Tavern in Broken Arrow on October 18. By Duane Blankenship

Talented and doing what he loves to do – that’s Cory Johnson, an Oklahoma singer/songwriter who now resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Cory was born in Tulsa and spent most of his youth in rural Oklahoma towns. He lived in Wagoner with his family from age 12 to 18. Confessing to being a lit-

tle on the ornery side, Cory got his publishing company name "That Johnson Boy's Music." “I’ve been singing my whole life,” says Cory. His mom tells him that he first performed at the age of three. “We were in a small café in Tulsa and a Beatles song began to play on the jukebox.

I stood up in the booth and sang along, not missing a word.” Cory says when he was just a bit older he remembers singing for his grandmother, who paid him ten cents a song. “One of her favorites,” he remembers, “was ‘Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On’,” written and recorded by Hank

Singer/songwriter Cory Johnson (center) with Main Street Tavern Owner Jason Scarpa and Manager Mel Shuman.

Locklin in 1958.” The song became an instant success and made it to number five on the charts; even early on, Cory knew a good thing when he heard it. Cory began writing and composing songs at 14. “Mom bought me a guitar for my 14th birthday,” he said. “I immediately learned six chords and wrote two songs. She was always telling me to ‘listen to the words’ when you hear a song.” He used to sing a lot of songs by Merle Haggard, who was always his favorite. While still under age, Cory would sneak into a local bar to play with the band and perform a couple of tunes. Cory enjoys blues, jazz and most styles of music, but whenever he writes or performs, it definitely comes out country. His lifetime passion has been to be a songwriter/singer, with an emphasis on songwriting. “I was never able to shake the idea,” he says. In the ’80s, Cory played guitar and sang harmony with another Wagoner entertainer and in ’89 started his own band.

They opened for Clint Black, Dan Seals and Restless Heart, and performed at Mayfest and other local venues. Cory has a CD Release Party scheduled for Friday, October 18 at 9:30 p.m. at the Main Street Tavern, located at 200 S. Main St. in Broken Arrow. The evening kicks off with the Rearview Mirror Band that includes members Rob Bishline, Roy Hood and Rick Williams. Around 10 p.m., Cory will perform songs featured on his new CD. There is no charge to attend, but CDs will be for sale, featuring ten favorite songs written and performed by Cory. “I’m hoping to generate a buzz in Nashville,” Cory says. “I’m busier now than I’ve ever been and appreciate the support and encouragement from my good friends in Oklahoma and Nashville.”

Oktoberfest Brings Tradition TTulsa and New Experiences Organizers promise German authenticity for patrons of all ages and interests. By Stacey Roggendorff

Tulsa’s largest fall festival turns 35 this year. Set for October 17-20, Tulsa Oktoberfest is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers a long weekend of authentic German celebration, including live music, carnival; rides, games and of course, food and drinks, among numerous other attractions. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn pass is available online,

allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $15 wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $5 and $10 or patrons can ride the free shuttles which run two routes through downtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas.

“Oktoberfest is a timehonored tradition for Tulsans and visitors alike,” says Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. “Oktoberfest offers entertainment, activities, and plenty of food and specialty beverages for everyone. It’s no surprise upwards of 60,000 people flock to Tulsa’s favorite Chicken Dance venue.” Live music is always a favorite and this year, several bands are traveling to Oktoberfest from Germany, including Kasplattnrocker,

Known for their modern take on traditional Bavarian music, Kasplattnrocker has been touring Europe for the better part of a decade.

Penny’s Oktoberfest Projekt and Celle Fire Blaskapelle. Keeping with German tradition, numerous beer tents will feature a variety of great beer for all tastes. A total of 42 domestic and import beers will be available, including premium brands such as Warsteiner, Paulaner, Konig and Hofbrau. Beer tents include Der Biergarten, Der Bierkeller, Das Esszelt and Die Bierstube. Das Fassler Hall Stammtisch Zelt will feature brews from Tulsa’s Marshall’s Brewing Company, including a special recipe made exclusively for Tulsa’s Oktoberfest. Wine, mixed drinks and nonalcoholic beverages also will be served. A new commemorative beer stein will be offered for the first time this year. Called the Masskrug, this one-litre (33.8 fluid ounce) stein is designed to closely resemble the mug frequently used in Bavarian beer gardens and beer halls and is a staple of the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. In addition to drink options, Oktoberfest will offer more than a dozen different food vendors. Many local restaurants will be on site with a wide variety of menu choices for all tastes. Some highlights include

Seigi’s sausage plate dinner, bratwurst pizza and Lanjaeger (German beef jerky). Ludger’s Weiner Schnitzel sandwich, apple strudel and Bavarian cheesecake will be available for purchase. The kids tent, Das Jugendzelt, will offer a variety of entertainment for children each day, including magic shows, circus skills presentations, live music, a science show and more. Authentic and Germaninspired games are fun to play and watch. The Dachshund Dash is a race featuring “wiener dogs.” The McNellie’s Bier Barrel Race allows teams of six to compete for the fastest keg roll. The Masskrugstemmen, otherwise known as the Strong Stein, is an endurance competition where contestants hold full mugs of beer at arm’s length until there is a winner. The International Artisan Market is a comfortable area to shop and relax. While exploring the many booths, patrons can enjoy coffee and pastries sold by Foolish Things Coffee Company. may have lost over the years. Andropause, or male menopause, is the result of a steady decline in testosterone and other related hormones, such as thyroid, DHEA and cortisol. The decline begins when a man is in his late 20s and symptoms are generally felt by the late 30s to early 40s. “Many men are coming to us for hormone therapy,” said Dr. Bilbruck. “They’ve realized that the hormones that give them energy, boost sex drive, and allow the building of lean muscle mass have begun to decline.” Testosterone is the anti-aging hormone in men. It gives them strength, fuels their sex drive, and facilitates bone growth. It also levels out their moods and enables them to concentrate. Testosterone keeps men motivated and fuels their desire to be productive and to succeed. “No man escapes andropause,” says Dr Bilbruck. “Fortunately, with proper male hormone treatment, the symptoms of andropause can be eliminated in as little as four to six weeks after hormones are balanced.” Results Medical Spa is passionate about treating men’s health and encouraging healthy aging. They are part of a national network of doctors providing male hormone treatment to clients using a common set of protocols established by the pioneers in hormone therapy. Above all else, the treatments are safe and effective. “There is a right and a wrong way to do testosterone replacement,” said Dr. Bilbruck. “The right way does not

the evening of October 15, 2013. Spotlighting the concert will be the Swon Brothers, the American country music duo from Muskogee, Oklahoma, who took third place honors on NBC’s “The Voice.” The Swon Brothers have been playing to sold-out crowds across the country since their success on the show. “The Swon Brothers, Zach and Colton, were also previously honored as Rising Star recipients for 2013 by the OMHOF,” said Smith. In addition to a one-hour concert by the Swon Brothers, the evening will also showcase performances from other Oklahoma musical greats including Sandi Patty. The 2013 inductees into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame include Jimmy Webb, Mason Williams, Barbara McAlister, Sandi Parry, Norma Jean, Bob Dunn (posthumous), Neal Schon, Roger Davis (Governor’s Award), The Swon Brothers, and the Mabee Center. “We are delighted to be hosting the Oklahoma Music

HEALTH CARE REFORM Ask Questions - Get Answers! Changes in healthcare are here! Does your company need advice? How will Health Care Reform impact you and your employees? Large and small businesses turn to The Holmes Organisation for consultation on this new law. The decision many company owners will face is whether or not they should extend coverage to all employees, choose not to provide coverage and pay the penalty or develop a hybrid plan. Businesses must consider how their decision will impact their employees, as well as predict how many employees would be eligible for subsidies offered through an exchange.

Launch of a Private Exchange technology system that provides employers and employees the ability to participate in defined contribution health plans.

Rather than paying a portion or all of a premium, an employer can offer no contribution at all or set aside a fixed dollar amount each month for employees to use to pay for their choice of individual health insurance or other medical costs such as doctor visits, dental insurance, and prescription drugs, often on a pre-tax basis.

Hall of Fame as they honor the great musical talent we have here in Oklahoma,” says Tony Winters, Mabee Center general manager. “The celebration of our 40th year anniversary comes to a close at the end of October, and I cannot think of a better way to end it than by hosting another Oklahoma treasure and honoring these artists.” Since its beginning in 1972, the Mabee Center has been known for attracting top-notch entertainment while maintaining a safe, family-friendly environment. They have hosted some of the biggest names in the world including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Luciano Pavarotti, The Bee Gees, Garth Brooks, Jay Leno, Reba McEntire, Justin Bieber and many, many others. “In honor of our 40th anniversary,” said Smith, “we recently launched the Mabee Center eMuseum, a showcase of the rich history and memories from over the years.” You can now take an

exclusive tour of Mabee Center’s history, the building process, a gallery, and much more. This spectacular historic accounting was assembled and designed by Shawn Bender, graphic design/web coordinator for the Mabee Center. Shawn was assisted by ORU students who spent hundreds of hours perusing the archives. “The project was a major undertaking,” said Smith, “and we are really proud of the final product that enables us to share the spectacular Mabee Center history with others.” Please visit the eMuseum at www.mabeecenter.com. “The induction concert will be an end-arena show with 8,000 expected to attend,” said Smith. When you visit the website you’ll find more event information plus ticket prices, ranging from $10 to $175 for a VIP Package that includes a Studio One Reception prior to the concert. Buy your tickets online or visit the Ticket Office by entering the north doors of Mabee Center.
