Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Risky Behavior
Go nuts with excitement for the whole family at The Nut House’s annual Pecan and Fun Fest October 19-20.
It is critical for parents to talk with their children about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. By Amy Graham
By Christopher Davis
As a parent, you play a vital role in helping your child avoid risky behaviors. Amy Graham, project director of STOP-ACT, Rogers County and Chelsea, offers parents tips on how to talk to your child about the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and drugs: Start early. Make sure your child knows right from the start that you think it’s important to stay safe and avoid drugs. Many kids start using tobacco by age 11 and are addicted by age 14. Between ages 9 and 13, children start to think that using alcohol is okay. At age 12 or 13, some kids are already abusing drugs like marijuana or prescription pain relievers. Teach your child the facts. Your child

This Ride’s a Real Dickens! Claremore Main Street presents the 7th annual Dickens of a Ride on Saturday, October 5. By Duane Blankenship

Join the fun at Dickens of a Ride on October 5 in Claremore (unicycles optional!).
The 5th annual Pecan and Fun Fest will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 from noon to 5 p.m. What better way to celebrate fall than amongst the turning leaves and pecan trees just outside Claremore along Route 66? Set a reminder, mark your calendar and prepare for a fun weekend of entertainment, food, sweets and shopping. Back in 2006, Hazel Ward went along with her husband and some friends to attend an estate sale at the roadside property of The Nut House, which had run into some trouble over the years. After a somewhat fruitless afternoon, Hazel and her friend decided to leave their husbands to their own devices and do some shop-
ping in town. Much to Hazel’s surprise, she received a phone call from a friend congratulating her on becoming the new owner of The Nut House. Her husband and his friend had purchased the building without consulting her! Mrs. Ward laughs it off, noting her husband is known for antics that would ordinarily drive a spouse “nutty.” Hazel’s ability to laugh and can-do spirit found her in the position of taking a historical retail outlet and building it into what it is today. The Nut House sells a variety of pecans from all over the country, as well as from their backyard. Additionally, they sell a variety of gifts and snacks, and offer a deli, a dining hall and an overwhelming selection of sweets, ranging from (continued on page 28)
Bicyclists in northeastern Oklahoma, plan to enjoy a great ride on Saturday, October 5 during the Dickens of a Ride bicycle tour through the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding Claremore. The ride is sponsored by Claremore Main Street, Inc. and supports their many programs and projects throughout the year. Proceeds from the ride help fund preservation efforts, economic development, and special projects including planters, trees, benches and public art. Dickens of a Ride attracts cyclists from Oklahoma and adjoining states. Ride options include distances of 30, 50, 62 and 100 miles. And for those who like to do their bicycling in a more relaxed manner, there is a Lazy Lake Loop, which is approximately seven miles. This is a good ride for beginning cyclists or for young families. All bike routes begin and end at Gazebo Park at Muskogee Avenue and Will Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House, and her daughter, Leslie Ward.

all over and over that what goes up…also comes down! If you have a good defense (i.e.: protecting you from the downside of the market), your offense doesn’t have to take as much risk because it’s not trying to make up for the 40% loss from the last time. What matters is the results year over year and the score at the end of the game. The market is at all time highs! Mark my words…what goes up, also comes down. The market does not move in only one direction! Folks have to remember that the stock market requires that you think in a counter-intuitive way. Most people feel better and safer in the market when it is high. When the market is low, folks feel worse and think the market is a bad place to be. Don’t get caught up in the euphoria of the market highs. Don’t allow yourself to get hoodwinked into chasing returns
of what did better last month or last year. Be smart. Stay aware. The cure for both fear and greed is to have a solid strategy that you stick with through the market cycles. THE GREED MONSTER IS BACK! I always tell my clients to be aware of the two beasts that run the markets. Their names are FEAR and GREED. Well right now, the GREED MONSTER is back in full force. The greed monster is more sneaky and difficult to identify than its counterpart FEAR. A person that is fearful can typically identify that they are afraid. The typical response to fear is either “fight or flight.” Clients will tell me, “I’m afraid! I want out!” Greed, on the other hand, is much more shrewd. I see competent, intelligent, and adept people being swept up by the skillful cunning of the greed monster. I believe that greed is a more clever and sly adversary because it plays on one’s ego, one’s self-pride, the part of one’s psyche that feels that it deserves more! It plays on the part of the mind that feels it’s smarter, and can play the market better than the next guy. The greed monster sounds very similar to the Monday morning quarterback who wants to question every trade with the gift of hindsight. Common statements that I hear from someone afflicted by the greed monster include: “The market is at all time highs. I should be too!” “I want 20% returns!” It is understandable that people naturally always want to beat the indexes. We do too. However, the market has taught us

Selection and Care Like You’ve Never Seen Elsewhere From basic to bling, Dr. Overstreet’s Advanced Vision Center and Eyewear Boutique will have the perfect pair of glasses for you – and she might even save your life.
By Christopher Davis
As soon as you walk into Advanced Vision Center and Eyewear Boutique in Claremore, you will notice this is not your average optometry office. First off, it is definitely what comes to mind when one mentions the phrase “eyewear boutique.” There are frames everywhere, and they are all stylish. Second, there is a zebra in the middle of the lobby. A zebra. But, before you can even ask the story behind the zebra, you are greeted by smiling faces asking how they can help you today. Once you walk into Dr. Abby Overstreet’s practice, you will likely never consider going elsewhere for your vision care. “I spend 90 percent of my time at this store,” explains Dr. Overstreet. “I wanted to create the type of place where I would be happy to spend my days working.” Patients frequently comment on the style of the store. “I try to decorate with others in mind, too. Our exam rooms have different themes, so there’s something to catch everyone’s attention and make them a
little more comfortable.” Dr. Overstreet not only chose the décor herself, she also painted the tables, with the help of her mom. With every step of the vision exam process, Dr. Overstreet and her staff prove that the practice is a top-notch facility. With an experienced staff dedicated to ensuring a happy and healthy experience, Advanced Vision Center will amaze you time and again. Dr. Overstreet’s exam rooms are equipped with the latest in optometry technology, and she is effective in using it. While in many cases, technology means a less personal visit, Dr. Overstreet prides herself in taking the time to educate her patients about their eyes. Flat screens mounted on the wall serve as eye charts one moment and presentations the next. With the wave of a remote, Dr. Overstreet can pull up images of the patient’s eyes and explain in detail what is affecting their vision. Her careful attention to details and ability to utilize this technology means that
patients get the best possible care. And, in some cases, it means a life is saved. Dr. Overstreet recalls one patient who recently came in complaining of a sudden loss of vision. During the exam, she noticed the cause: plaque in an artery in the back of the eye was restricting his vision. “I knew that the plaque was thrown from the carotid artery, so he was at serious risk for a stroke.” She immediately called the patient’s primary care physician, who urged her to send him to the hospital by ambulance. Later, she learned that her patient had suffered a minor stroke, and was, indeed, about to suffer another, likely more severe, stroke. They operated immediately and the patient was saved from a second episode. Dr. Overstreet adds, “I’ve had two patients like that. They only caught it because they came in for an eye exam.” Specializing in pediatric optometry in college, it is no surprise her office has a kids corner, complete with DVD

player and toys. The lobby (perhaps gallery is more appropriate) features a huge selection of frames, from traditional to the latest styles by Coach and Oakley. Along the back wall is a small optometry museum that chronicles the evolution of optometry equipment and glasses. Indeed, patients will walk in amazed and leave educated; staff can answer every question you may have and make informed suggestions for the perfect
pair of glasses. One question you may still imagine is, “What about the zebra?” For that answer, you have to ask Dr. Overstreet yourself. For more information, contact

More Than Just M a Pharmacy Claremore Compounding Center mixes convenience, caring and customer service. By Carol Beck-Round
Claremore Compounding Center is more than just a pharmacy. In addition to filling any medicine your doctor prescribes, it is the only real compounding pharmacy in the area. This isn’t, however, the only thing that sets the independent locally-owned retail pharmacy apart from others. Ask Ron Maggard, pharmacist and men’s health specialist at Claremore Compounding, and he says, “When you walk in the door, you’re greeted with a smile. Our pharmacists are also available to talk to customers and can fill prescriptions in 15 minutes or less.” Add free local delivery, two drive-thru lanes and emergency 24/7 service to the mix and you have the perfect combination of convenience, caring and customer service. Maggard, along with Pharmacy Technician Marsha Hipp, joined the team at Claremore Compounding this past summer. Both have followed a similar path, beginning with jobs at Drug
Warehouse, then Chelsea Family Pharmacy before coming to Claremore Compounding. “Marsha has been a pharmacy tech for six years,” says Maggard. “She is a wonderful addition to our staff.” Maggard’s path to Claremore Compounding actually began in the public school system. As a coach and science teacher for 10 years – from 1995 to 2005 – he began to feel a need to apply the science principles he was teaching in biology and chemistry. Returning to college, he earned his doctor of pharmacy from Oklahoma University, graduating in 2011. Excited about the direction his career has taken, Maggard is also bringing his passion for a healthy lifestyle to the job. “We will be working with doctors as a team to help our customers achieve their maximum health potential.” One way Claremore Compounding will achieve that goal is by adding sports
nutrition products to its shelves after the first of the year. “Everyone wants to lose weight and get in shape,” he says, “but we want them to do it in a healthy way by offering free consultations for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle, not just athletes.” Of personal interest to Maggard is the area of men’s health, especially the aging aspect. “A lot of men think it’s a part of getting older –feeling tired all the time,” he says. “As men grow older their hormone levels, especially testosterone, decline. Doctors have discovered in the past several years it’s the number one cause of male depression.” Commercial over-thecounter products can help men with low hormone levels – and some do work – but Maggard points out that “not all are safe. Men need to be checked to see where their hormone levels are at. After pinpointing the exact dosage each individual needs, we can compound something specifically for that

individual.” Maggard, who has been attending seminars and symposiums on men’s health issues, will be working with doctors, including Dr. Dwight Korgan, who is a leading physician with expertise in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) in this area, both in men’s and women’s health. With the use of BHRT, “We can determine exactly what the body needs,” he adds. “Topical creams have big benefits.” Although there is a fee for the consultation and test, the first prescription is free. Hormone levels are checked via a saliva test. Claremore Compounding will be hosting a free seminar on October 15 at 7 p.m. to discuss HRT, ED and other men’s health issues. Dr. Korgan, as well as other health care professionals, will be on hand to discuss options and answer questions.
Pamphlets with more information about the process involved and the steps to take to get hormone levels checked will also be available. Everyone is welcome to come, and refreshments will be provided. M Mouthwatering Mexican Cuisine El Maguey brings traditional flavors and a host of options to satisfy customers.
By Christopher Davis
In the eight years since opening their doors at 1954 S. Hwy. 66, El Maguey has earned a reputation for having some of the absolute best Mexican food in Claremore. After a recent addition to their dining hall, they are now expanding their menu as well, to welcome an increasingly diverse range of customers. El Maguey’s approach to success is simple: they offer a squeaky clean restaurant and smiling service from a staff that makes an extra effort to please and serves sizzling hot food that tastes great. Their authentic flavor is attained by using quality, fresh ingredients. Now they hope to bring the same great taste to an even larger spectrum of customers with unique dietary concerns. “We are making an effort to cater to special diets,” explains restaurant manager Chantal Vidal. Ms. Vidal has been with the restaurant since they opened their doors and has noticed the growing trend of specialized diets. Vidal says they get more and more special orders and requests for vegetarian and gluten-free meals.
Manager Chantal Vidal and Saul Magana, owner of El Maguey.
“Sometimes people have the impression that Mexican food is not healthy,” acknowledges Vidal. “We want to show people that is not the case.” While many folks with special diets find themselves choosing between taking a cheat day and skipping dinner out, it is refreshing to see a restaurant
known for its authentic Mexican food that is willing to adapt with the times. With vegetarian, low-carb and gluten-free diets gaining popularity, it is understandable when restaurants choose to keep things simple. After all, how can a restaurant please everyone?
El Maguey’s is willing to take a shot at it, and they believe Mexican food can offer something for everybody. “We want to please our customers,” says Vidal. “We try our best to serve what they want.” And the restaurant puts their menu where their mouth is. Vidal explains that, while they have always been willing to make substitutions to suit customers, they have taken several big steps to ensure they can please some of the more significant requests. “We have a separate fryer now for gluten-free items,” she says. Anyone who eats strictly gluten-free will recognize how important this is. “We have also added more salads and vegetarian options,” she says. She encourages customers to try their new vegetarian quesadilla, or they can request their favorite meal “sin carne” (without meat). “We want customers to be comfortable when they arrive and satisfied when they leave,” says Vidal. Regulars who love the food that El Maguey is best known for should not worry, however. All of your favorite menu items, like the chile relleno
and their signature pollo loco, remain on the menu and will be as tasty as ever. Other items that El Maguey is known for include homemade chips, several different kinds of salsa and grilled fajitas. There is also a great kids’ menu, featuring niño-sized portions of traditional entrees, as well as chicken tenders, corn dogs and French fries. The restaurant’s recent expansion means they can handle large groups and parties more readily, and they also cater. As always, carryout is available, whether you call ahead or drop by on the way home from work. With a full bar selection, feel free to order a margarita or a beer. El Maguey prides itself on its family-friendly atmosphere. With the recent menu and dining additions, there is sure to be room at the table for your entire family or party, no matter their preferences or needs. For more information, contact

PPamper Your Pets Beth’s Pawfection Dog Grooming focuses on keeping your pets calm, comfortable and beautifully groomed.
By Christopher Davis
Whether your furry family member is a humble house pet or best in show, Beth’s Pawfection Dog Grooming has you covered, nail to tail. Established two and half
years ago, the business has a great location at 2208 S. Hwy. 66 in Claremore, just behind OklaHomes Realty. Business hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
and appointments are encouraged. It is a convenient stop along the highway, and tucked far enough away from the road to ensure pets will not get spooked by traffic. A

nice field adjacent to her building serves as a great spot for owners to walk their dog to blow off some energy or take a potty break. “We pride ourselves on keeping the pets safe and calm,” explains owner Beth Holmes. “One of my main concerns is making sure the pets are comfortable and happy as we work with them.” Beth offers a full array of services for cats and dogs of any size. In addition to basic baths and grooming, services include skin treatments, flea shampoo, Furminator deshedding treatment, teeth brushing, anal gland expressing, nail clipping and filing, and even nail painting or caps. Beth and her staff prefer to see your pets by appointment, but she will take a walk-in if time permits. Clients can call to make reservations or visit her website, which features a userfriendly contact form. Scheduling a visit in advance enables Beth and her staff to work more efficiently and ensure the facility remains calm for the wellbeing of the animals. Efficient scheduling also means that she and her staff can devote more attention to your pet’s care. “Some animals get anxious, so we do everything we can to help them relax,” says Beth. There is even a TV in the dog waiting area, which plays cartoons to help soothe the dogs. Since most grooming appointments last two to three hours, clients can depend on a well-timed turn-
Page 9
around to give them just enough time for shopping or running errands. However, clients are welcome to leave their pet all day, if needed, and pick him or her up after work. Beth’s attention to detail and care for your pets does not stop there. Features like a walk-in tub and an electric table that lowers and raises are especially helpful for large breeds or dogs with injuries or who are getting older. Animals always get a thorough bath and are well-dried – even their ears. Each pet walks out with a cute bandana or bow as a finishing touch. Beth’s Pawfection Dog Grooming has earned a reputation for swift, excellent service that makes tails wag and owners happy. With competitive rates, a referral program that earns discounts, a broad range of services, and a convenient location, you owe it to yourself and your pet to make a reservation today. Whale of a Tale Artisan Sale W Don’t miss this Oklahoman-only artisan event benefitting the Friends of the Catoosa Public Library on Saturday, October 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
By Sheryl Sowell
Friends of the Catoosa Public Library is an organization with the mission “to strengthen our local library, to encourage our community by providing opportunities for increased knowledge, and to open doorways to the world for future generations.” The Friends accomplish this through a variety of free community events, educational and fitness classes, and donations to the library, including books and financial support. “We not only want to increase awareness of the library through fundraising, but engage our community as well,” says Becky Jones, president. “At our meetings we discuss what our community needs are and how we can fill those gaps.” The Friends of the Catoosa Public Library will host their next fundraiser on Saturday, October 26, the 3rd annual Whale of a Tale Artisan Sale. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Catoosa Library & Community Center, located at 105 E. Oak St., and will feature more than 50 Oklahoma artisans selling a variety of items: jewelry,
quilts, hand-turned pens and clocks, Cherokee style baskets, cake decorating services, handcrafted wares and much more. Kathryn Bolen, vice president of the Friends and event coordinator, is excited to return with her Kat's Custom Kreations jewelry for sale. Proceeds from artisan booth rental fees will go towards the Friends' efforts to improve the library and offer free services to the community; their next goal is to purchase a permanent sign for announcements and events. The Catoosa Masonic Lodge will be sponsoring the artisan sale and again have committed to matching a portion of the proceeds. If you’re looking for a fun way to log some volunteer time, contact the Friends – they are in need of volunteers the day of the sale. The primary focus of the event is the exhibition of quality Oklahoma fine arts and crafts, giving attendees the opportunity to meet, interact with, and purchase from the local artisans. Whale of Tale will also feature a “make and take” craft booth for children, door prizes, and a “natural” pageant for ages
toddler through 19. The “Our Diamond Miss” pageant begins at 12:30 p.m., so be sure to arrive early for signup, or contact Cara Wallin at Diamonddance02@yahoo.com or (918) 812-3594 for more information or early registration. Live entertainment will fill the air throughout the day, including the music stylings of saxophonist Duane Nelson, bluegrass group Southern Highway, and other local entertainment. Vendor applications will be accepted through October 1 or until all spots are filled. Indoor and outdoor booths are available for $40, and canopies may be rented for outdoor booths (all booth fees benefit the Friends’ community efforts). The Whale of Tale Artisan Sale is a juried event; artisans must submit photos of their products for selection. Application info is available online at www.catoosalibraryfriends.com. The Friends stay busy throughout the year providing a wide variety of free services to the community, including a movie night held the third Thursday of every month,

weekly exercise classes, book sales, Breakfast with Santa, and an assortment of instructional classes. Past classes have included craft lessons in jewelry making and Cherokee basket weaving, doit-yourself home and beauty workshops, couponing seminars, genealogy sessions and more. For the future, the group is planning a spring gardening fair, car show and chili festival. Everyone is encouraged to join the Friends of the Catoosa Public Library. Visit
www.catoosalibraryfriends.com for more details and an event calendar. You can also find the Friends on Facebook. They are always accepting donations as well, including books, movies, DVDs, and especially audio books.

JJohn Deere and a Whole Lot Mower P&K Equipment, an authorized John Deere equipment dealer, sets the industry bar at its highest level.
By Duane Blankenship
P&K Equipment was formed in 1985. Company owner is Dr. Barry Pollard of Pollard Farms. Dr. Pollard is also a leading neurosurgeon known around the country for his skills and expertise. Currently, there are 19 P&K Equipment stores in Oklahoma and Iowa. The P&K Owasso location has been on East 66th Street North since February of 2009. It is a showplace for shopping and purchasing John Deere implements and equipment plus several other complementary brands. This store operates under the supervision and direction of Site Manager Randal Bobbitt. As soon as you drive onto the Owasso P&K Equipment property, you are struck by its size and cleanliness, as well as the amount of product inventory neatly displayed throughout the lot. Walk inside the store and the feeling continues. The employees are professional, polite, and immediately available to answer questions and assist you. Some of the equipment you’ll see includes
lawnmowers and other lawn care products, John Deere Gators, tractors, rakes, combines, balers and mower conditioners. You'll also find chainsaws, trimmers and Commercial Worksite Products. “Whether you’re a farmer, rancher, or homeowner, we’ve got a complete lineup of products to fit your needs,” said Bobbitt. The store also carries a huge inventory of John Deere toys and apparel for
children and adults. Bobbitt’s management team includes Service Manager Eric Gier, Ag Shop Foreman Fred Peters, Parts Manager Dennis Kastner, and Lawn & Garden Service Foreman Chris Scarpa. “Our great inventory of products and parts is complemented by our outstanding support staff,” said Bobbitt. “We have 35 outstanding employees, and I consider their hiring to be one of my greatest
achievements. Each individual contributes to the professionalism and success of our operation.” The P&K service department is staffed by master certified technicians who must complete a minimum of 16 hours training per year through John Deere. The store also has Stihl certified technicians who service all hand-held Stihl products. “We consider our techs to be some of the
best in the business and each is highly skilled, knowledgeable, and professional in performing their jobs,” added Bobbitt. P&K believes that business is all about the people, both the employees and their customers. Randal Bobbitt says he tells his employees nearly every day, “Customer satisfaction – not just customer service – is the real name of the game.” When a customer completes a transaction at P&K Equipment in Owasso, he wants them to leave thinking that they can’t wait to come back to the store again. “We have a great P&K team and we will keep trying to differentiate ourselves from everyone else,” he adds. “We are passionate about what we do and how we satisfy our customers.”

Bringing Big City Credentials to the Community From carpal tunnel to sports medicine, Dr. Lawson at Central States Orthopedics is committed to helping you get healthy.
By Christopher Davis
Many locals are discovering the perks of Owasso that are frequently popping up – great shopping, full service hospitals and colleges increasingly make this community the perfect place to set down roots, without losing the small town charm and sense of community that attracts so many families. Central States Orthopedics adds to this list of reasons to avoid driving to Tulsa, offering a full line of
orthopedic services and resources in a convenient location just off the Owasso Expressway next to Urgent Care of Green Country. Bradley Lawson, M.D., brings commitment and passion for healing to Owasso. “I like to see people get better,” explains Dr. Lawson. “It is fulfilling to see patients get back to daily living and everyday activities, especially when some don’t realize they could be living without the pain they’ve
Bradley Lawson, M.D., Central States Orthopedics.
experienced for, sometimes, years.” With board certification for both sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Dr. Lawson is a welcome addition to the community. Dr. Lawson runs the satellite office for Central States Orthopedics in Owasso. This network of orthopedic specialists, based in Tulsa, provides all the benefits and resources of larger networks, without sacrificing the individual attention and quality that a small practice is best at. From non-surgical treatment options including prescribing medications and physical therapy, injections, splinting, casting, and bracing, to surgical treatment including carpal tunnel, fracture fixation, arthroscopic surgery, ligament repair and reconstruction, and joint replacement, Dr. Lawson can provide the quality care and medicine needed without the hassle of commuting to Tulsa. His office is open Monday
www.ValueNews.com through Friday in Owasso, so appointments are convenient if you live in Owasso, Collinsville, Claremore, Skiatook, Oologah, Bartlesville, or other towns in northeast Oklahoma. They guarantee a new patient appointment in 48 hours. If an injury calls for a more involved surgery, Dr. Lawson conducts surgeries at Bailey Medical Center (Owasso), Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (located at 81st and Lewis), and St. Francis Hospital South (located at 91st and Hwy 169). Dr. Lawson takes emergency room call at Bailey Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital South. So, if you find yourself with an injury at one of these hospitals, be sure to ask for Dr. Bradley Lawson to be your orthopedic doctor. A patient is able to choose the doctor they want for their care. With a family that includes four children, Dr. Lawson understands the importance of community involvement. This is his second season with the Collinsville Cardinals, as Dr. Lawson volunteers his time as the team doctor for the varsity football team. The sport can be dangerous, and Dr. Lawson makes himself available for immediate treatment of any injuries that occur during the game. “It is important to ensure the athletes are properly exam-
ined when there is an injury on the field,” Dr. Lawson says. “Obviously, everyone wants to stay in the game, but if the injury is serious, or the player shows signs of a concussion, a strong personality is needed who can not only assess the situation, but explain whether the injury warrants sitting out or not.” Having grown up playing football and other sports, Dr. Lawson is an ideal team doctor and understands the commitment and passion that drives these players to be the best. Commitment and passion is certainly what has helped shape his path to a respected practice in Owasso. Dr. Lawson served our country for 16 years as active duty in the Air Force, then completed a year long sports medicine fellowship training program in the Connecticut and New York City area. His experience in the military, playing sports and raising a family makes Dr. Lawson a fantastic asset to the community. Central States Orthopedics in Owasso hopes to become your first choice for all your orthopedic and sports medicine needs. For more information, contact

GGuard Your Keepsakes
RCB Bank employee Debbie Jones explains the benefits of having a safe deposit box.
By Jocelyn Wood
Seven years ago, a flood surged through my house, destroying practically everything I owned. As my husband and I were sorting through the mucky mess, we found that our wedding pictures were discolored and damaged, my husband’s baseball card collection was soiled with soot and ultimately ruined, and all of our tax documents past and present were swept away in the rushing current never to be found. For years, I stressed over the thought of a random tax audit. What would I do? I
had no records, no supporting documents. And, my husband was devastated knowing that he had worked so hard and long to build a valuable collection only to see it now worth next to nothing. If only we had protected our valuables in a safe deposit box at the bank. RCB Bank employee Debbie Jones has owned a safe deposit box for many years and highly recommends them to anyone who has important papers, family heirlooms or other items that would be hard pressed to replace.
Protect your valuables in a safe deposit box like the ones seen here. Pictured is Matt Klem.
“It’s a much safer place to store important documents than at your house, in case of a fire, flood or other natural disaster or in case of a burglary,” said Jones. When deciding if a safe deposit box is right for you or what items to store in your box, ask yourself, “If this item was lost, can I easily replace it?” If the answer is no, then consider storing your keepsakes it in a safe deposit box. Common items include: • birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports • loan documents, mortgages, property deeds • life insurance policies, homeowner’s policies, car insurance policies • stock or bond certificates • gemstones, collectables, heirlooms “The list goes on,” Jones said. “I even have the originals of a few one-of-akind photos of my grandparents in there for safekeeping.” When it comes to privacy and security, each safe deposit box takes two keys to access: one is held by the bank staff and the other by the box owner. It takes both keys to open the box.
Theresa Cox, of Skiatook, is the winner of a new 2012 CNG Honda Civic, given away by RCB Bank at its Block Party in September. Theresa, pictured with RCB Bank President and CEO Roger Mosier, waited patiently as nine finalists before her picked a key and tried to unlock the car door. RCB Bank's Car Giveaway Promotion was in celebration of its three new branches that opened in Edmond in June 2013. RCB Bank now offers 33 convenient locations across Oklahoma and Kansas.
Box rentals range from $20 to $75 annually, depending on the size of box.* RCB Bank allows its customers the ability to set up an automatic debit from their bank accounts. Access to safe deposit boxes is usually available during normal business hours. “I just take my key to the vault, sign in and I’m in,” said Jones. “They’re relatively inexpensive, easy to access and it gives me peace of mind to know that I can go to one place and find everything that I need safe and sound.”
Information listed is based on RCB Bank Safe Deposit Box rental prices. Fees, box sizes and payment plans may vary at other financial institutions or safe deposit box providers. Contents of your safe deposit box are NOT insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any government agency. For more information, contact

CChildcare You Can Trust Cognitive creativity and Christian values come together at Claremore Children’s Center.
By Stephanie Reed
For many parents, the most agonizing part of returning to or continuing in the workforce isn’t the work itself, but rather the fear of the unknown for the children left behind with babysitters or in childcare centers. Claremore parents can rest a little easier, as Claremore Children’s Center was
established to set your mind at ease. Started in May of 2005, Claremore Children’s Center’s mission is to serve as a haven for local children while promoting Christian values. Owner Suzanne Carroll has been in the childcare business for 20 years. As a former special education
teacher, she realized quickly that early childhood development was her calling; she wanted to provide a place for children to feel safe while receiving a holistic education. “Parents shouldn’t have to worry about their child while they are out trying to provide financially. We want our parents to know that we are

going to meet all of their child’s needs: physically, emotionally, and mentally,” Suzanne says. In an effort to meet all of her students’ needs, Suzanne offers some perks that other childcare centers do not. First of all, she provides an onsite counselor to help both children and parents through trials they may face. She also provides onsite immunizations through the Blue Cross and Blue Shield caring van. Furthermore, called by her faith, Suzanne and Claremore Children’s Center frequently extend a helping hand to families struggling with housing, clothing and more. “We view our children and their families as a part of our family. We go through so much together. We pray together, and we cry together,” Suzanne explains. It isn’t only warmth and togetherness that has earned Claremore Children’s Center their two star rating. The center provides daily information sheets for infants through three years of age, and they provide weekly sheets for pre-K children. In addition, the center sends home monthly newsletters and menus for their state approved food program, featuring a breakfast snack, nutritious lunch, and an afternoon snack. “We serve our children only the healthiest foods,” Suzanne comments. “We buy Braum’s milk to avoid added growth hormones, and we offer veggies and fresh fruit.”
Page 27
Concerned about your older children? No need to worry. After students are picked up from school, they are given a snack and then encouraged to complete any homework assignments with the help of teachers before the lively afternoon activities begin. Claremore Children’s Center is currently undergoing application to earn their third star from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The third star is the highest ranking possible and among hundreds of other criteria are teacher’s education, curriculum, multicultural education, inclusion, and a unique atmosphere. Centers with this type of star power must relicense every year with an onsite visit every three years. “We have put our heart and soul into this center,” Suzanne says. “I truly believe that God has called me to service the children of Claremore and the surrounding areas.” If your child is in need of a loving daytime environment, visit Claremore Children’s center online or call today.

Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Risky Behavior needs to know how using tobacco, alcohol and drugs can hurt the body and cause problems at home and in school. Kids who know the facts are more likely to make good choices. Give your child clear rules. Not wanting to upset their parents is the number one reason kids give for not using drugs. Your child will be less tempted to use tobacco, alcohol and drugs if you explain your rules clearly. Explain that you set rules to keep your child safe. Tell your child you expect her not to use tobacco, alcohol or drugs. Let your child know what will happen if he breaks the rules. Praise your child for good behavior. Find out what your child already knows. By preschool, most children have seen adults smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol, either in real life, on TV, or on the Internet. Be prepared to answer your child’s questions. Research shows that kids do listen to their parents. Children who learn about drug risks from their parents are less likely to start using drugs. Talk with your child about how to say “no.” Kids say that they use alcohol and other drugs to “fit in and belong” with other kids. Talk to your child about how to say “no.” Your
child can make a plan for when other kids offer tobacco, drugs or alcohol. If your child is already a teen, remember it’s never too late to start the conversation about avoiding drugs. Even if your teen may have tried tobacco, alcohol or drugs, you can still talk about making healthy choices and how to say “no” next time. When you talk about the dangers of drugs, don’t forget about drugs that may already be in your home. When not taken safely, prescription and over-the-counter medicines like cough syrup can be just as addictive and dangerous as other drugs. Make sure to talk to your kids about these dangers, and store medicines in a locked cabinet. Set a good example for your kids. Never take someone else’s prescription medicine or give yours to anyone else. If you smoke, try to quit. If you drink alcohol, don’t drink too much or too often. If you use drugs, find a treatment program near you. Never drink or use drugs and drive. Get help if you need it. If you think you or your child may have a drug or alcohol problem, get help. Don’t wait. What about cost? Drug and alcohol assessments for teens are now covered under the Affordable Care Act, the health care reform law passed in

This Ride’s a Real Dickens! continued from page 1 Rogers Boulevard. Riders will head west out of Claremore through scenic country sides to Oologah. From there, they will cycle areas surrounding Claremore Lake. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through challenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are urged to stop by the Gazebo, where lots of really nice door prizes will be awarded by drawings as participants return. Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett says, “The Boomarang Diner is offering a great Breakfast Ride Special beginning at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.” It will include one egg, two pieces of bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and gravy, and hash brown potatoes. Milk, coffee or juice is not included with the special, but may be purchased separately. There will also be eight well-supplied rest stops along the bike routes where riders look forward to sitting a spell and taking advantage of numerous home baked goodies and fruit. Excellent mechanical and SAG support will be provided on the Dickens of a Ride until 5 p.m. Be sure to wear your ANSI, CPSC, or Snell approved helmet if you plan on participating in the ride; it’s required. Visit the website
www.downtownclaremore.org to register online or if you prefer, you may print a registration form, fill it out, and mail it in with your check. Janice Whittaker, co-owner of Bike-About Bicycles, says, “Registration packets may be picked up at Bike-About on Thursday, October 3 until 8 p.m. You may also get your packet beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the ride.” Maps will be provided, and you need to be prepared for some hills. Riders under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is also on a bicycle and riding with them. Riders under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a Ride Release. Major sponsors of the 2013 Dickens of a Ride include RCB Bank, Walmart, BancFirst, Amazing Melton Sales, Bike-About Bicycles & Touring Shop, and Boomarang Diner. Many thanks to each of them and to each of the riders who help make Dickens of a Ride one of the best in the state of Oklahoma.

for Local Boy Battling FFundraiser Rare Genetic Disorder The second annual ZipperQ on Saturday, October 5 will raise money in honor of 6-year-old Zip Gordon and includes a drawing for a new Jeep Wrangler. By Cheena Pazzo
The Gordon family is working hard to raise awareness for their son, who is battling a rare genetic disorder called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) or “Stone Man Disease.” Zip was diagnosed with FOP in July of 2011 at age 4. Friends and family are hosting the second annual ZipperQ event to raise money for the International FOP Association (IFOPA), which funds FOP Research while supporting children like Zip and their families through education, advocacy and public awareness. Last year’s event raised $160,000 – the largest amount ever raised at an Oklahoma IFOPA event. FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic conditions known to medicine, affecting 1 in 2 million with only 800 confirmed cases worldwide. The FOP gene mutation causes muscles to gradually turn into bone. Falls, bumps, and even the flu can trigger rapid muscle loss due to new
bone growth. Those affected with FOP can potentially become enclosed in a second skeleton. The second annual ZipperQ will be held October 5, 2013 at The Nut House on historic Route 66 in Claremore to raise money to help find a cure for FOP. All proceeds will go directly to the IFOPA. At the event, Zip will draw the winning ticket for a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. The $25 tickets are available for purchase now on ZipperQ.com to fund FOP research to help Zip and other children who need treatment to end this disorder. In addition, teams can sign up online to participate in the barbecue competition. “We are honored to have support across the state for Zip’s cause," said Amy Gordon, Zip’s mother. “This is a fun family-oriented event, complete with excellent barbecue and an incredible range of auction items to suit everyone’s interest. Together
Zip Gordon (center) joined by (L to R) Avery and Addison Clyma (friends), Callie James (cousin), and big sister Arlie Gordon in front of the 2013 Jeep Wrangler that is being raffled.
we will find a cure!” “The disease is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time. We need a cure or treatment as quickly as possible to avoid additional long term damage,” Gordon added. “Flare-ups can occur spontaneously or following bodily trauma, such as childhood immunizations, falls while playing and viral illnesses.” According to FOP researchers, the information obtained from studying this disease will have far reaching implications for the treatment of common disorders such as fractures, osteoporosis, hip
replacement surgery, and other forms of heterotopic ossification that occur in trauma and burn victims including our wounded warriors. “We are encouraged by all developments that will lead to meaningful clinical trials,” said Zip’s physician, Dr. Fred Kaplan. Basic research on FOP is beginning to provide the scientific basis for the rational design of meaningful clinical trials. Although we are not quite there, it is exciting to know Clementia Pharmaceuticals (Montreal) has licensed Palovarotene
from Roche Pharmaceuticals, culminating months of collaboration among Dr. Maurizio Pacifici and Dr. Masahiro Iwamoto from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and Dr. Fred Kaplan, Dr. Robert Pignolo, and Dr. Eileen Shore from the University of Pennsylvania. HHop on the Chuck Wagon Visit Claremore adds a new Chuck Wagon Cook-Off to Will Rogers Days. By Christopher Davis
Will Rogers’ birthday is November 4, which means that Claremore – the hometown of Rogers – is planning their annual Will Rogers Days celebration. As part of the celebration, Visit Claremore will host the firstever Chuck Wagon Cook-Off on Saturday, November 2 at Claremore Expo Center. This event brings together authentic chuck wagons and a good old-fashioned, stick-toyour-ribs feast as teams compete for appetites and bragging rights in a handful of categories. “I think this is something Will Rogers himself would have enjoyed,” explains Tanya Andrews, executive director of Visit Claremore. “We have been looking to add more events to the city-wide celebration of Will Rogers Days and think an authentic Chuck Wagon Cook-Off is a perfect fit.” Authenticity is certainly a theme of the cook-off, a unique event in the region. Tanya and organizers worked with the American Chuck Wagon Association to recruit wagons from all over the country. The ACWA encourages participants to
preserve this aspect of American heritage through competitive events that involve setting up camp, cooking with authentic Old Western tools and showing restored or replicated chuck wagons. For two days, the wagon train rolls into the Claremore Expo Center and will set up camp in the “Chili Bowl” area. Participants compete in seven categories as they educate, entertain and feed attendees. The fun begins on Friday, November 1, as the chuck wagons establish their camps. The first round of judging – for the Will Rogers Choice category – will commence late on Friday afternoon. Later that evening, a chili dinner and blessing will be held for the chuck wagon teams, as well as sponsors and city leaders, hosted by the Restoration Hardware Ranch. On Saturday, November 2, the chuck wagon teams get down to business. Each team will dig a pit for cooking – yes, they will dig cooking pits at the Expo Center. At 1:45, teams will submit their meals to the panel of judges. At 2, the chuck wagons will begin serving attendees. In order to
catch a taste of the authentic, down-home cowboy cooking, attendees must purchase meal tickets, which include meat, potatoes, beans, bread, dessert and a drink. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, as there are a limited number available. Meal tickets are $8 in advance and $10 the day of, if any remain. Chuck wagon teams will compete in seven categories on Saturday: Most Authentic, Best Overall and Best Food subcategories for meat, potatoes, beans, bread and dessert. Some of the items you can expect include chicken fried steak, beef stew, fried or mashed potatoes, beans, biscuits, cornbread, sourdough bread peach cobbler and much more. Remember – this is not merely a home-cooked meal; these items will be cooked just as the cowboys in the old days used to cook them. By 5 p.m., the food will surely have run out and judges will announce the winners of each category. In addition to mouthwatering cowboy cooking, attendees can look forward to celebrity judges and entertainment of all sorts.
Executive Director Tanya Andrews, Visit Claremore.
Kids’ activities, storytellers and more will be at the Chili Bowl area at the Expo Center. And, the chuck wagons themselves are like mobile museums. Teams, dressed in period attire, will be on hand to talk about how things used to be. For all the changes over the years, though, one thing remains the same: Claremore always presents an opportunity for families to come together, enjoy each other’s company and make some fun memories. Visit Claremore extends appreciation to the ACWA and all the chuck wagon teams who have pitched in to organize this event, as well as RCB (presenting sponsor) and wagon sponsors Pixley Lumber Co., Grand Bank, Melton Sales, MoreClaremore.com, Visit Claremore and the Claremore

YOUR HOMETOWN THERAPY PROVIDER
I
t is hard to believe in 1999, SUMMIT Physical Therapy opened their doors to start treating patients in Northeast Oklahoma. In 14 years, SUMMIT Physical Therapy has grown from 4 employees to more than 60. They have three adult clinics in Claremore, Catoosa, and Pryor; as well as a full-service pediatric clinic in Claremore. SUMMIT Pediatric Therapies is currently providing school based therapy in more than 13 schools in Northeast Oklahoma. Owners, Sean Cox and Bret McGuire, work, live, serve, and have raised their families in this community for more than 20 years. Friday nights during football
season, Bret and Sean are seen standing on the sidelines of the Claremore Zebras and Sequoyah Eagles football games in case of an injury. Both Cox and McGuire hold positions with the Claremore Zebras Sports Foundation board of directors, as well as various boards at their church. Sean is also a member of the Rotary Club in Rogers County and Rogers County Youth Services board of directors. Other employees at SUMMIT serve on the Claremore Public Schools Foundation, Catoosa Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Rogers County United Way board of directors, and Junior Ocieleta club. “We love that we are able to be
active and serve in the communities we work and live in,” explains Cox. Sean Cox and Bret McGuire, both Doctors’ of Physical Therapy, have more than 22 years of physical therapy experience. McGuire states, “We continue to expand our services we offer to patients so they do not have to drive to Tulsa for treatment.” Not only do they provide rehab for patients needing physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy; SUMMIT provides unique services like pediatric therapy, Women’s Health therapy, work injury rehab, custom foot orthotics, and aquatic therapy. A common misconception about phys-

ical therapy is that it is only for people who have had surgery. However, in some situations, physical therapy can provide patients experiencing back pain, neck pain, joint/tendon pain, knee pain or shoulder pain a more conservative approach of a rehab program to eliminate the need for surgery. SUMMIT wants to be your hometown therapy provider. Ask your doctor for a referral to SUMMIT PHYSICAL THERAPY. For more information, visit their website www.ptsummit.com or call 918.342.3800.
