Could Your Old Driveway Use Some Curb Appeal? LCI Concrete specializes in concrete driveways, patios and other flatwork. By Duane Blankenship As a homeowner in northeastern Oklahoma, you’ve probably already discovered that winter snow, ice and corrosive salt take their toll on your home’s driveway. Given a little time and a few hard winters, most of us have witnessed firsthand the pitting and flaking that begins defacing our driveways. The deterioration gradually worsens until it has a definite negative effect on your home’s curb appeal and even its value. There is, however, a simple way to get rid of that old “eye sore” leading up to your garage, while greatly improving the curb appeal. LCI Concrete is in business to remove driveways, patios, and other concrete flatwork that is showing signs of damage for one reason or another. They then replace the damaged concrete with
the finest concrete and strengthening materials available. Kalan Paul is the owner of LCI Concrete and has more than 20 years of experience in his chosen field, serving both commercial and residential customers. His company has specialized in the pouring and scoring of concrete driveways, patios and most other flatwork including sidewalks. Kalan attended Northeastern State University, and he and his wife, Aimee, reside in Broken Arrow with their four children. LCI is fully insured and is a member in good standing with both the Broken Arrow and Tulsa chambers of commerce. “We have but one goal,” said Kalan, “and that is to make every customer proud of their new (continued on page 28)

THE GREED MONSTER IS BACK! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
I always tell my clients to be aware of the two beasts that run the markets. Their names are FEAR and GREED. Well right now, the GREED MONSTER is back in full force. The greed monster is more sneaky and difficult to identify than its counterpart FEAR. A person that is fearful can typically identify that they are afraid. The typical response to fear is either “fight or flight.” Clients will tell me, “I’m afraid! I want out!” Greed, on the other hand, is much more shrewd. I see competent, intelligent, and adept people being swept up by the skillful cunning of the greed monster. I believe that greed is a more clever and sly adversary because it plays on one’s ego, one’s self-pride, the part of one’s psyche that feels that it deserves more! It plays on the part of the mind that feels it’s smarter, and can play the market better than the next guy. The greed monster sounds very similar to the Monday morning quarterback who wants to question every trade with the gift of hindsight. Common statements that I hear from someone afflicted by the greed monster include: “The market is at all time highs. I should be too!” “I want 20% returns!” It is understandable that people naturally always want to beat the indexes. We do too. However, the market has taught us
all over and over that what goes up…also comes down! If you have a good defense (i.e.: protecting you from the downside of the market), your offense doesn’t have to take as much risk because it’s not trying to make up for the 40% loss from the last time. What matters is the results year over year and the score at the end of the game. The market is at all time highs! Mark my words…what goes up, also comes down. The market does not move in only one direction! Folks have to remember that the stock market requires that you think in a counter-intuitive way. Most people feel better and safer in the market when it is high. When the market is low, folks feel worse and think the market is a bad place to be. Don’t get caught up in the euphoria of the market highs. Don’t allow yourself to get hoodwinked into chasing returns

of what did better last month or last year. Be smart. Stay aware. The cure for both fear and greed is to have a solid strategy that you stick with through the market cycles. Getting squeamish midway through a market cycle and changing your strategy is a sure way to achieve negative results. If you don’t really have a strategy or are working with someone that you are not sure has one either, give us a call. We can help. OOSU Medical Group Welcomes Dr. Hervert John Hervert, D.O., opened his internal medicine practice in July.
By Duane Blankenship
John Hervert, D.O., completed his residency with the Oklahoma State University Medical Center last June and began his practice of internal medicine in July with the OSU Medical Group. As an internist, Dr. Hervert’s focus is on multiple system diseases and complex diseases. Dr. Hervert is currently accepting new patients 18 years and up. His office is located at 802 S. Jackson, Ste. 210, adjacent to the OSU Medical Center. Dr. Hervert grew up in Hastings, Nebraska, where his father practiced internal medicine for 37 years. “I’m the youngest of five children,” said Dr. Hervert, “and the only one in medicine. I really wasn’t pressured by my dad. He never encouraged any of us to go into medicine. I was just always amazed by the sciences in high school and college.” Dr. Hervert says he knew the requirements of medicine because of his father, but really didn’t know just how much enjoyment he would find in being a doctor until he was actually studying
medicine. Dr. Hervert attended medical school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in the Appalachian Mountain Valley. “The area was an entirely different culture from where I had grown up, and I enjoyed the experiences of both medical school and the culture,” he said. Dr. Hervert’s residency brought him to the OSU Medical Center, and he says, “I feel very fortunate in getting to come to Tulsa. I am really enjoying setting up my practice here.” Although the doctor had never been to Oklahoma, he had heard good things about the state and that the OSU Medical Center was recognized as one of the top residency programs in the nation. Dr. Hervert’s practice of internal medicine will cover everything outside of pregnancy and children. As a doctor of osteopathic medicine, Dr. Hervert takes a total-person approach to health care, encompassing the mind, body and spirit of each patient. His desire is to
become a partner with each patient on a pathway to health and wellbeing. “As your primary care physician, I will be treating everything from diabetes, heart failure, and high blood pressure to the sniffles,” he said. His office will provide screenings for cholesterol, the colon, prostate problems and PSA tests, and more. “We will be doing everything we can to reduce morbidity (the presence of illness or disease) and eliminate anything happening that could adversely affect your health,” said Dr. Hervert. “Medicine is always changing, and that’s a good thing,” said Dr. Hervert. “With new ideas in medicine being discovered every day, it’s absolutely necessary for medical doctors to continue their education throughout their careers to stay abreast of current research and developments.” There is one other good thing worthy of mention which has happened to Dr. Hervert since his arrival in Tulsa. While in his residency, he met Senior Resident
Dr. John Hervert, OSU Medical Group, is currently accepting new patients. For more information, contact
Kendal Mitchell from Florida. Dr. Mitchell’s Fellowship in Pulmonology and Dr. Hervert’s residency were completed at the same time, and the two will be married this October.

HHike for Healing
The Tristesse Grief Center hosts the 3rd annual Hike for Healing, an awe-inspiring scene encouraging camaraderie as we honor our loved ones, on Saturday, October 5.
By Christopher Davis
The 3rd annual Hike for Healing takes place on Saturday, October 5 at Turkey Mountain. Hosted by The Tristesse Grief Center, Hike for Healing brings together a variety of people for a 5K walk/run/hike to honor loved ones. There will be a variety of activities planned as well, offering many ways to commemorate the passing of those who touched our lives. The Tristesse Grief Center is a nonprofit that offers counseling and support to the bereaved as they cope with loss and make their way to a renewed sense of health. The Grief Center, which serves about 5,000 people annually in the region, specializes in individual and loss-specific group counseling for a variety of life-changing events. “Our mission has grown over the years beyond bereavement services,” explains Executive Director Susan Bramsch. “We also provide support for life losses, such as the loss of a job, a divorce or other significant
life events.” The organization provides a variety of ongoing grief support programs in many settings, both at their office as well as out in the community. The Healing Hearts Club is a program that partners with schools throughout northeast Oklahoma, free of charge. Experiencing growth of more than 200 percent recently, the center is developing plans to expand their facility. They just broke ground on a new playhouse, which will prove useful for the children engaged in play therapy. With so many in need of TGC’s services, they are hoping the Hike for Healing will become a major community event to help meet this growing need for services in Tulsa. The Hike for Healing offers a unique opportunity to come together and honor the memories of loved ones in a healthy, outdoor environment. All are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. Registration is $30 for adults ($20 for TGC
clients). Children 12 and under are free. The day begins early with registration at 6:45 am, followed by a welcome presentation at 7:15 am. Shortly after, a sunrise balloon release will celebrate the memories of lost loved ones. The timed 5K trail run starts at 7:30. The Memorial Walk and Candle-lighting Ceremony starts at 7:35. The 5K run starts at 7:45 a.m. The event will feature a variety of activities, including music, poetry, special guest speakers and more. “My favorite part of the event is the balloon release at sunrise,” says Alissa Drescher, Program Director. Bramsch agrees, “There’s something about being at Turkey Mountain at sunrise that gives you a sense of awe. Releasing hundreds of balloons in remembrance of our loved ones as the sun comes up will be a special moment. I’m always mesmerized by how strangers quickly become friends and

develop a sense of camaraderie at this event. We don’t normally get a chance to share our experiences of loss in the everyday world, so I think this sort of environment lends itself well to building lifelong friendships.” Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 5 and support this event and the organization that helps so many people cope with grief and loss. GGuard Your Keepsakes
RCB Bank employee Debbie Jones explains the benefits of having a safe deposit box.
By Jocelyn Wood
Seven years ago, a flood surged through my house, destroying practically everything I owned. As my husband and I were sorting through the mucky mess, we found that our wedding pictures were discolored and damaged, my husband’s baseball card collection was soiled with soot and ultimately ruined, and all of our tax documents past and present were swept away in the rushing current never to be found. For years, I stressed over the thought of a random tax audit. What would I do? I
had no records, no supporting documents. And, my husband was devastated knowing that he had worked so hard and long to build a valuable collection only to see it now worth next to nothing. If only we had protected our valuables in a safe deposit box at the bank. RCB Bank employee Debbie Jones has owned a safe deposit box for many years and highly recommends them to anyone who has important papers, family heirlooms or other items that would be hard pressed to replace.
Protect your valuables in a safe deposit box like the ones seen here. Pictured is Matt Klem.
“It’s a much safer place to store important documents than at your house, in case of a fire, flood or other natural disaster or in case of a burglary,” said Jones. When deciding if a safe deposit box is right for you or what items to store in your box, ask yourself, “If this item was lost, can I easily replace it?” If the answer is no, then consider storing your keepsakes it in a safe deposit box. Common items include: • birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports • loan documents, mortgages, property deeds • life insurance policies, homeowner’s policies, car insurance policies • stock or bond certificates • gemstones, collectables, heirlooms “The list goes on,” Jones said. “I even have the originals of a few one-of-akind photos of my grandparents in there for safekeeping.” When it comes to privacy and security, each safe deposit box takes two keys to access: one is held by the bank staff and the other by the box owner. It takes both keys to open the box.
Theresa Cox, of Skiatook, is the winner of a new 2012 CNG Honda Civic, given away by RCB Bank at its Block Party in September. Theresa, pictured with RCB Bank President and CEO Roger Mosier, waited patiently as nine finalists before her picked a key and tried to unlock the car door. RCB Bank's Car Giveaway Promotion was in celebration of its three new branches that opened in Edmond in June 2013. RCB Bank now offers 33 convenient locations across Oklahoma and Kansas.
Box rentals range from $20 to $75 annually, depending on the size of box.* RCB Bank allows its customers the ability to set up an automatic debit from their bank accounts. Access to safe deposit boxes is usually available during normal business hours. “I just take my key to the vault, sign in and I’m in,” said Jones. “They’re relatively inexpensive, easy to access and it gives me peace of mind to know that I can go to one place and find everything that I need safe and sound.”
Information listed is based on RCB Bank Safe Deposit Box rental prices. Fees, box sizes and payment plans may vary at other financial institutions or safe deposit box providers. Contents of your safe deposit box are NOT insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any government agency. For more information, contact

Oktoberfest Brings Tradition TTulsa and New Experiences Organizers promise German authenticity for patrons of all ages and interests. By Stacey Roggendorff
Tulsa’s largest fall festival turns 35 this year. Set for October 17-20, Tulsa Oktoberfest is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers a long weekend of authentic German celebration, including live music, carnival; rides, games and of course, food and drinks, among numerous other attractions. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn pass is available online,
allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $15 wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $5 and $10 or patrons can ride the free shuttles which run two routes through downtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas.
“Oktoberfest is a timehonored tradition for Tulsans and visitors alike,” says Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. “Oktoberfest offers entertainment, activities, and plenty of food and specialty beverages for everyone. It’s no surprise upwards of 60,000 people flock to Tulsa’s favorite Chicken Dance venue.” Live music is always a favorite and this year, several bands are traveling to Oktoberfest from Germany, including Kasplattnrocker,
Known for their modern take on traditional Bavarian music, Kasplattnrocker has been touring Europe for the better part of a decade.
Penny’s Oktoberfest Projekt and Celle Fire Blaskapelle. Keeping with German tradition, numerous beer tents will feature a variety of great beer for all tastes. A total of 42 domestic and import beers will be available, including premium brands such as Warsteiner, Paulaner, Konig and Hofbrau. Beer tents include Der Biergarten, Der Bierkeller, Das Esszelt and Die Bierstube. Das Fassler Hall Stammtisch Zelt will feature brews from Tulsa’s Marshall’s Brewing Company, including a special recipe made exclusively for Tulsa’s Oktoberfest. Wine, mixed drinks and nonalcoholic beverages also will be served. A new commemorative beer stein will be offered for the first time this year. Called the Masskrug, this one-litre (33.8 fluid ounce) stein is designed to closely resemble the mug frequently used in Bavarian beer gardens and beer halls and is a staple of the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. In addition to drink options, Oktoberfest will offer more than a dozen different food vendors. Many local restaurants will be on site with a wide variety of menu choices for all tastes. Some highlights include
Seigi’s sausage plate dinner, bratwurst pizza and Lanjaeger (German beef jerky). Ludger’s Weiner Schnitzel sandwich, apple strudel and Bavarian cheesecake will be available for purchase. The kids tent, Das Jugendzelt, will offer a variety of entertainment for children each day, including magic shows, circus skills presentations, live music, a science show and more. Authentic and Germaninspired games are fun to play and watch. The Dachshund Dash is a race featuring “wiener dogs.” The McNellie’s Bier Barrel Race allows teams of six to compete for the fastest keg roll. The Masskrugstemmen, otherwise known as the Strong Stein, is an endurance competition where contestants hold full mugs of beer at arm’s length until there is a winner. The International Artisan Market is a comfortable area to shop and relax. While exploring the many booths, patrons can enjoy coffee and pastries sold by Foolish Things Coffee Company. GGet Your Home Holiday Ready A popular service of Camps Construction is providing relaxing, functional outdoor living areas, just in time for the upcoming holidays.
By Deanna Rebro
Exterior landscape of a home or business is the first impression anyone will have, and it’s important to make this impression a good one. A skilled and reliable contractor can make an area both attractive and functional. Camps Construction can do it. Since starting his business in 2005, owner Gerardo Campos has had one satisfied customer after another lead him to residential and commercial jobs building and repairing retaining walls from stone, boulders, DMU blocks, Versa Lok or railroad ties; building drain systems; and installing artistic concrete, patio covers, decorative flooring, driveways and walkways. Popular now, he says, are outdoor kitchens and outdoor living areas. “We can do everything for outdoor kitchens,” says Gerardo. That includes appliances, equipment and storage, landscaping and any other steps to create a customized project. “Just make one call to me and I will get it done.” Pergolas with outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are also popular. A cozy and relaxing space can be created with a
decorative cement floor or stone floor, a pergola and a fireplace up to 72 inches. With the holidays just ahead, people are thinking of ways to spruce up their homes. “I can show them lots
of pictures of my work and give them ideas,” says Gerardo. Many homeowners have already turned otherwise wasted space into “wow” space for both entertainment and relaxation. What makes it
even better is that these extensions are not only beautiful, but they have also added value to their homes. Gerardo believes he has so many happy customers because he understands that
everyone’s needs are different; there are no cookie-cutter or one-size-fits-all projects. While some people want to increase privacy, others want to open up space. Some want to take advantage of a spectacular view, and others want to mask an unattractive view. He listens to what each customer tells him – what they must have, what they would love to have and how much they have budgeted for the project. Then he goes to work to come up with options to meet their needs. “I always use the best materials to give customers the best job for the best price,” he says. Every day of every job he is on site to make sure the project is on schedule and his customer is happy. Camps Construction also solves drainage problems for homes and businesses with various options for drain systems, and they do interior remodeling, including stamped concrete flooring and fireplaces. A call to Camps Construction today could mean a finished project in time for the holidays. All estimates are free and all work comes with a materials warranty. Camps Construction is a member of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Oklahoma.

JJohn Deere and a Whole Lot Mower P&K Equipment, an authorized John Deere equipment dealer, sets the industry bar at its highest level.
By Duane Blankenship
P&K Equipment was formed in 1985. Company owner is Dr. Barry Pollard of Pollard Farms. Dr. Pollard is also a leading neurosurgeon known around the country for his skills and expertise. Currently, there are 19 P&K Equipment stores in Oklahoma and Iowa. The P&K Owasso location has been on East 66th Street North since February of 2009. It is a showplace for shopping and purchasing John Deere implements and equipment plus several other complementary brands. This store operates under the supervision and direction of Site Manager Randal Bobbitt. As soon as you drive onto the Owasso P&K Equipment property, you are struck by its size and cleanliness, as well as the amount of product inventory neatly displayed throughout the lot. Walk inside the store and the feeling continues. The employees are professional, polite, and immediately available to answer questions and assist you. Some of the equipment you’ll see includes
lawnmowers and other lawn care products, John Deere Gators, tractors, rakes, combines, balers and mower conditioners. You'll also find chainsaws, trimmers and Commercial Worksite Products. “Whether you’re a farmer, rancher, or homeowner, we’ve got a complete lineup of products to fit your needs,” said Bobbitt. The store also carries a huge inventory of John Deere toys and apparel for
children and adults. Bobbitt’s management team includes Service Manager Eric Gier, Ag Shop Foreman Fred Peters, Parts Manager Dennis Kastner, and Lawn & Garden Service Foreman Chris Scarpa. “Our great inventory of products and parts is complemented by our outstanding support staff,” said Bobbitt. “We have 35 outstanding employees, and I consider their hiring to be one of my greatest
achievements. Each individual contributes to the professionalism and success of our operation.” The P&K service department is staffed by master certified technicians who must complete a minimum of 16 hours training per year through John Deere. The store also has Stihl certified technicians who service all hand-held Stihl products. “We consider our techs to be some of the
best in the business and each is highly skilled, knowledgeable, and professional in performing their jobs,” added Bobbitt. P&K believes that business is all about the people, both the employees and their customers. Randal Bobbitt says he tells his employees nearly every day, “Customer satisfaction – not just customer service – is the real name of the game.” When a customer completes a transaction at P&K Equipment in Owasso, he wants them to leave thinking that they can’t wait to come back to the store again. “We have a great P&K team and we will keep trying to differentiate ourselves from everyone else,” he adds. “We are passionate about what we do and how we satisfy our customers.”

Men: Look, Feel and Perform Better All men will experience male menopause sometime in their lives. It can be treated. By Duane Blankenship
Dr. Laura Bilbruck is the medical director of Results Medical Spa, a full-service medical and wellness spa located at St. John in Broken Arrow.
Results Medical Spa is a comprehensive, full-service medical and wellness spa providing non-surgical treatment to men and women who want to make the best of how they look, feel and perform. “We offer procedures that have no downtime, have minimal side effects, are minimally invasive, and are painless but effective,” says Dr. Laura Bilbruck, medical director. “Our non-surgical treatments are accessible and affordable.” Dr. Bilbruck’s desire is to help others recapture the vitality they may have lost over the years. Andropause, or male menopause, is the result of a steady decline in testosterone and other related hormones, such as thyroid, DHEA and cortisol. The decline begins when a man is in his late 20s and symptoms are generally felt by the late 30s to early 40s. “Many men are coming to us for hormone therapy,” said Dr. Bilbruck. “They’ve realized that the hormones
TULSA
that give them energy, boost sex drive, and allow the building of lean muscle mass have begun to decline.” Testosterone is the antiaging hormone in men. It gives them strength, fuels their sex drive, and facilitates bone growth. It also levels out their moods and enables them to concentrate. Testosterone keeps men motivated and fuels their desire to be productive and to succeed. “No man escapes andropause,” says Dr Bilbruck. “Fortunately, with proper male hormone treatment, the symptoms of andropause can be eliminated in as little as four to six weeks after hormones are balanced.” Results Medical Spa is passionate about treating men’s health and encouraging healthy aging. They are part of a national network of doctors providing male hormone treatment to clients using a common set of protocols established by the pioneers in hormone therapy. Above all else, the treatments are safe and effective. “There is a right and a wrong way to do testosterone replacement,” said Dr. Bilbruck. “The right way does not cause side effects and will have you feeling like a new man in no time.” “As men age,” she continued, “testosterone levels begin to diminish and they experience the symptoms of andropause.” Some of the
Page 17
symptoms include fatigue, low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, weight gain, depression, irritability, hair loss, prostate problems and sleeping disorders. “If you’re experiencing any of these problems, you might be andropausal. The good news is that we can help get your engine running again with proper hormone therapy.” Men, you can now reclaim the energy, mental sharpness and passion you once had. Spend meaningful time with your family. Improve your love life and reclaim the passion for your partner. Feel better, look better, and be happier. Suffering with the negative symptoms of andropause is unnecessary. If you’ve found yourself at a point in your life where you don’t look or feel like you think you should as you’ve aged, Dr. Bilbruck and Results Medical Spa believe you should do something about it. Contact them today for an evaluation appointment.

SSuperior Has Its Ducts in a Row Call Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning to help improve your home’s air quality and reduce heating and cooling bills.
By Deanna Rebro
Uneven temperatures throughout your home? It’s a common mystery to many homeowners, so they just live with it and continue to pay high heating and cooling bills for areas that are not properly climate controlled. But it does not have to be that way. Bill Smith of
while warm or cool air gets out. The area in disrepair has a noticeably different and often uncomfortable temperature. The solution lies in a one and only EPA-registered air duct sealant that sticks to the holes in the ducts to create an even air flow through the system. The rubbery substance resists any future house movement so cracks cannot reappear. Providing superior air quality while saving people money in the long term is what Bill does best. The native Tulsan has spent more than 22 years in the air duct business. Earlier this year he launched Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning with business partner Adan Vasquez. “I’ve seen what processes work and don’t work in this business. I want to offer solutions that are once and for all, so the same problem does not recur,” he explains. Many homeowners and business owners ask him what can be done to improve the air quality they breathe. Thoroughly cleaning the ducts and coating them is the answer.
Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning understands why this happens and what can be done to correct it. According to Bill, in time, metal ductwork in the floors of older homes is prone to rusting. As a house moves, the rusted spots crack and mildew, mold and fungus get into the ducts
Bill Smith can solve your air quality problems and save you money in the long term.

SUPERIOR AIR DUCT COATING & CLEANING IS LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED!
The process begins with a free video inspection. A tiny specialized camera makes its way through the ducts to determine their condition. Rust spots, blockages or collapsed sections are quickly identified, as well as the contaminants that have accumulated over time. The customer can watch the procedure on screen with the technician so he or she can see exactly what is causing the problem. As part of Superior’s 8-point process, necessary repairs are made and the ducts are thoroughly cleaned and then coated with a patented product that literally adds years to air systems, as they no longer have to work as hard. The customer saves on monthly heating and cooling bills, and the air remains clean. There are no more buildups to cause health concerns. “This really sets us apart from anyone else,” Bill says. “We have the strongest warranty available – 25 years – and the warranty is transferrable.” If a homeowner decides to sell, the new buyer can be reassigned to the remaining
warranted period. All the work is done by Superior employees, with a certified air duct technician on every job. They drive company vehicles to each job and wear company uniforms with their names. Video recordings of work processes can be emailed to the customer for later inspection. Later this year Superior will become the first local company to introduce robotic service for commercial customers. A 17x15x12-inch remote-controlled robot will deliver and apply sealant in these larger ducts. National franchises are also in the works. “We’re proud to have our beginnings right here in Tulsa,” says Bill. Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning is Better Business Bureau approved. RReveal Clear Skin Embrace fresher, clearer skin with a custom acne treatment at Reveal Salon. By Stephanie Reed It is no surprise that many of us devote plenty of attention to heart-healthy foods and liver-boosting nutrients; however, many still neglect the body’s largest organ, our skin. It just so happens that this particular organ is, in many cases, responsible for first impressions and self-image. Unfortunately, millions of people of all ages battle skin conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation and fine lines each year. Reveal Salon’s Nicole McGinnis is on a mission to help unburden locals suffering under these afflictions with custom corrective treatments. Nicole, an esthetician of 15 years, understands that not all skin conditions are created equally, and as such, cannot be treated equally. Unlike many popular skin care companies, she does not subscribe to a one-sizefits-all approach to treatment. Instead, she utilizes a program called Face Reality. With the help of this system, she is able to
personalize and adjust each treatment based on skin tone, lifestyle, food allergies, and more. The treatments, which take about 45 minutes to complete, are administered every two weeks until skin reaches 90 percent clarity. One client, Aubrey Loney, a longtime acne sufferer, recently sang the praises of these treatments via social media. “Nicole McGinnis has been doing light peels and light treatments on my skin for a couple of months to treat my acne. I had tried everything and could not get rid of it. She is wonderful!” This tale of success is not an isolated one. Nicole attributes these results to the education that she provides her clients at the beginning of treatment. “Most people need treatment and preventative measures,” Nicole explains. “I caution clients that this isn’t a one-time fix, but it is effective. It is important that clients come in for an education about both the
custom treatments and at-home care.” Nicole opened her full service salon just over a year ago. “It is hard to find the right place. I wanted a place to carry on my work as well as offer nails, hair and a master barber. I have that place in Reveal,” Nicole says. After enjoying the successes of custom treatments, clients have routinely expressed a desire for a makeup line that works with skin prone to acne and breakouts. With this in mind, Nicole has recently adopted a makeup line that boasts only four ingredients, and it is proven to nurture sensitive skin rather than aggravate it: Mineral Hygenics. Nicole’s makeup choice contains a chemical free SPF, inert materials, which discourage mold and fungus while increasing the makeup’s shelf life, and no irritants. There is no reason to suffer from problematic skin any longer; start nurturing your epidermis

TThe Screwtape Letters Don’t miss “The Screwtape Letters,” theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel, at Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 5 (two performances only!). By Sheryl Sowell
“A humorous and lively stage adaptation...The devil has rarely been given his due more perceptively and eruditely…Clever and satirical,” wrote Wilborn Hampton, The New York Times. “Very smart…richly rewarding…exuberant theatricality!” exclaimed Chris Jones in The
Chicago Tribune. “Wickedly witty. Lewis’ topsy-turvy exercises in inverted moral theology were made to be played with lip-smacking relish!” wrote Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal. Lauded by audiences and critics alike, The Screwtape Letters is a play you won’t
want to miss. For two shows only, The Screwtape Letters will be coming to Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 5, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Call (918) 259-5778 for tickets or stop by the Box Office, 701 S. Main St., Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR NEXT PAIR OF EYE GLASSES Do you have a strong prescription? Are you walking around with an unfilled prescription in your pocket? Did you know it is best to get it filled ASAP? Do you realize that strong RX’s DEMAND greater precision with optical center, Bi-focal and MRP placement? Have you had problems with the vision and fit you may have received at shops that herd you through like cattle?
Are you hard to fit? Large or small hat size with eyes set close over the nasal area combined with the lower ear syndrome means you need an experienced optician to fit you and keep your eyewear maintained.
Are you tired of feeling baited by unrealistic prices? Only to find out that the eyewear is stripped-down S.V. versions that are cheap, unattractive, fit improperly, scratch and break easily. Many won’t hold adjustments and just don’t have the features you need.
Have you tried conventional surfaced no-line progressives in the past and failed to adapt? Technological advances in “DIGITAL” lens manufacturing have radically improved the optics, fields of vision and dramatically reduced distortion so that almost anyone can wear them. Check out the Seiko Perfas Prestige II on the first two YouTube videos at the bottom of our homepage. These lenses could be extremely helpful to contact lens wearers, those who wear readers over contacts, and those who cannot or will not rely on corrective surgery for their visual correction needs.
Did you know that Precision Optical has been operating since 1994? Located at the northwest corner of 81st and Elm Place in Broken Arrow, we are one of the VERY FEW optical shops that can do emergency gold soldering of your broken eyeglass frames. We can also replace worn and scratched lenses in your fine sunglasses with gray or brown polarized lenses.
You should get your eyes examined every 1-2 years and more often if medical conditions warrant. The eye exam is a two-fold procedure. 1.) Medical health 2.) Corrective refraction. Many are pleasantly surprised to find they see much better after the exam and new lenses, when originally they had felt they had not changed much. Call us today to set up an eye exam!
Precision Optical stocks 800-1000 frames and sunglasses including: Christian Dior · Liz Claiborne · Ralph Lauren · Covergirl · Kenneth Cole · Marchon & Flexon · Tura & Turaflex Ted Baker · Charmant · Dana Buchman · Maui Jim/RX · Wily X/RX · Norma Kamali · And much more!
The key is PRECISION MEASUREMENT and TOTAL ACCURACY. For the past 18 years, George has provided superior service in Broken Arrow, Coweta and South Tulsa and yes, he cuts the lenses himself.

www.ValueNews.com The Screwtape Letters is a smart, provocative and wickedly funny theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel about spiritual warfare from a demon’s point of view. It was a hit in New York City, where it played 309 performances at the Westside Theatre in 2010. Prior to that, it ran for six months in Chicago. It also had two engagements at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. where it played for 10 sold-out weeks. Max McLean, who adapted the novel to the stage and directs the production, says, “The Screwtape Letters is one of the great literary creations of the 20th century, offering an imaginative picture of the spiritual battle that goes on within each of us.” The play, set in an eerily stylish office in hell, follows the clever scheming of Satan’s chief psychiatrist, Screwtape, as he entices a human ‘patient’ toward damnation. In this topsy-turvy, morally inverted universe, God is the “Enemy” and the Devil is “Our Father Below.” The stakes are high as human souls are hell’s primary source of food. As His Abysmal Sublimity Screwtape, awardwinning actor Brent Harris creates a “master of the universe” character who mesmerizes the audience as he allures his unsuspecting “patient” down the “soft, gentle path to Hell.” At his feet is Screwtape’s able assistant, Toadpipe (played by Marissa Molnar and Tamala Bakkensen), a grotesque crea-
ture demon who transforms her elastic body into the paragons of vices and characters Screwtape requires to keep his patient away from the “Enemy.” According to McLean, this work is one of the best examples of reverse psychology in all of literature. “The Screwtape Letters follows two story arcs, that of an unsuspecting human on earth – the ‘patient’ – and Screwtape, whose greatest enemy is God. It is a highly entertaining and provocative theatrical event,” says McLean. “But even beyond that, it is an experience that stays with the audience long after the show has ended. It forces people to contemplate their lives and the choices they make each day.” Along with The Chronicles of Narnia (including The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe), The Great Divorce and Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters is still one of Lewis’ most popular and influential works. The story’s success is due to its piercing insight into human nature and the lucid and humorous way Lewis makes his readers squirm in self recognition. Could Your Old Driveway Use Some Curb Appeal? continued from page 1 LCI concrete product that will serve them well for years and years to come.” When one approaches your property, their first image is influenced by the driveway. If it’s unsightly with corrosion and flaking, it’s not going to make a good impression. Kalan says concrete is durable, and when the soil and concrete are properly prepared and poured, you can expect it to last for at least 20 to 30 years. And you will rest easy knowing that LCI has the knowledge to do the job right each timet. Replacing a damaged driveway is not inexpensive, but with its expected lifespan it might be a good investment and add value to your home. Concrete brightens up the areas around our homes and businesses at night. It is also an environmentallyfriendly product because it is composed of renewable resources that can be recycled into granular fill or concrete aggregate. The average driveway takes about two days to break out, remove, prep,
pour, and score. LCI first lays 3/8-inch rebar on industry recommended 2-foot grid patterns after the subsurface has been properly and professionally prepared. Using industry standards of 3500 psi, LCI then pours and finishes the concrete. These standards are incorporated into every job they do. You may drive on your new driveway three days after the concrete is poured. Here’s a great tip from Kalan: “Do your concrete driveway and yourself a favor by using only clean sand on winter ice or snow covering it. Your driveway will last much longer.” Add curb appeal to your home by replacing your ugly, pitted, corroding driveway. Call Kalan at LCI Concrete for a free estimate. For more information, contact

With it, the cares of the day seem to fade away, along with the aches and pains most of us feel as we grow older. Until recently, it was difficult and dangerous for seniors as they stepped up and over to get into a tub. Many aging Americans with mobility issues still fear the simple act of getting into a bath or shower. Slipping and falling is persistently on their minds and is a safety concern. One specialty of Community Builders is bathroom remodeling. They recommend several products from two manufacturers, Jacuzzi® and Luxury Bath®. Both have introduced product lines featuring walk-in tubs and walk-in showers that are also accessible by wheelchair for those with limited mobility. These new

RRe-Leaf for Your Trees S&W Tree Specialists offer services that can possibly save your dying trees.
By Duane Blankenship
S&W Tree Specialists is a well-respected, family-owned and operated business. The company provides tree care, plant healthcare, property maintenance, tree pruning, turf care, and emergency storm services to businesses and homeowners throughout northeastern Oklahoma. Dale Hughes and his wife, Leilani, Bryan Mersburgh, and Robby Mizumura are the principals running daily operations. There is always a certified and trained arborist and tree care safety professional available to answer your questions about trees, plants or lawns. Estimates for services are free with no obligation. Bryan tells us that they are still seeing lots of dead trees in the metro Tulsa area and throughout northeastern Oklahoma. “We’re seeing lots of maples that have been stressed to their limits with the extreme heat of past summers. Don’t put off getting dead trees removed from your property,” he cautions. As dead trees continue to stand, they become more susceptible to breakage, falling limbs, and
causing damage to property and people. As time goes by, rotten trees become increasingly more hazardous to the owner, to those who pass near them, to your property, and to those who are hired to remove the dead trees. Dead and dying trees are also susceptible to disease, many of which are carried by insects. When you’re sick or sustain a wound or injury to your body, you get it treated as quickly as possible. Trees are no different – the sooner
the treatment, the better. “After a tree dies, get it removed as soon as possible,” says Bryan. It’s safer for you and will cost you less than if you wait until it becomes a real safety issue.” If you’ve noticed lots of leaves falling from your trees the past couple of years because of the intense heat and drought conditions, S&W can make recommendations that could possibly save your trees. Sometimes it’s not possible
because they’ve been neglected too long. Give S&W a call to see if they think your tree could survive with recommended treatment. “If you’re intending to have trees removed or pruned this winter and can book the work now, S&W is offering some great deals,” says Bryan. “December, January and February are the best times to have these services provided because the trees have no leaves and, therefore, there is
less cleanup needed after the work is completed.” You can also call now for free estimates or to sign up early for S&W’s spring services including mowing, edging and trimming. “Now is also the time to schedule checkups for the applications of fertilizer and insecticides for trees and shrubs,” Bryan added. “October and November is the optimum plant healthcare season and the best time to plant.” S&W will help you select healthy trees to plant, or you can select and purchase trees yourself and they will pick up, deliver and plant them for you. The experts at S&W Tree Specialists have an ongoing commitment to education, training, safety and modern equipment. “We also have a passion for total customer satisfaction,” said Bryan. NOW IS THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR TO TRIM AND CLEAN UP YOUR TREES. Severe weather can cause serious damage to your landscape. But strong, healthy trees and shrubs have a better chance of survival. Good preventative care is often the difference between little or no damage and serious or even life-threatening storm damage. Our ISA Certified Arborists can examine your trees to help eliminate the risk of breakage and increase overall health.

FFight the Bite, Net a Village, Save Lives Kairos 10 aims to wipe out malaria with your help. By Stephanie Reed
Kairos 10, a nonprofit organization dedicated to wiping out malaria in Ghana, has enjoyed great success in protecting over 72,000 people from this vicious disease through the distribution of mosquito nets. Founded by Phyllis Morris and Katheryn Pennington in 2010, Kairos 10 purchases Ghanaian beads made from recycled glass, vinyl records, bones, and brass from local merchants, and pays native women to make jewelry. The jewelry is then
sold in the United States, and the proceeds are used to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets. This organization, with the help of 60 volunteers across the United States, has been more successful than the founders ever imagined. “We thought initially we would be lucky to sell 300 bracelets, but the demand was incredible, and we have been able to reach so many people in need,” Katheryn explains. Dependent on volunteers for

sales and outreach, Katheryn was floored when longtime friend and fellow volunteer, Julie Ryker, told Katheryn that her daughter’s fifth grade class at Jenks West Intermediate wanted to join in the fight. These volunteers had lofty goals: they wanted to donate 75 nets. The funds for these net were to be raised primarily through T-shirts featuring their theme, “Fight the Bite,” jewelry sales, soccer ball decorating and donating, and asking for donations. Over the course of several months, 120 Jenks students were able to raise the funds for 760 mosquito nets. The students were astounded at their success. A fire was lit in their hearts, and many had never experienced this joy of giving. This fire burned so brightly that students were moved to go on and collect 500 pairs of flip flops to help stop the spread of intestinal parasites. These acts of charity not only benefited the families in Ghana, but the students at Jenks West Intermediate were also exposed to cultural differences and conversations. These acts of charity helped to cultivate generous and well-

rounded youth in Oklahoma. In January, Julie Ryker travelled to Ghana and distributed the nets to those in need, and they decided to dedicate a fresh water well in honor of the Jenks West Intermediate students. Pictures were taken, videos were shared, and soccer balls were distributed to Ghanaian youth. “Volunteerism is such a powerful thing,” says Julie. “Katheryn’s passion just spills over. It has impacted my entire family, and because of her passion, my children have a much more global view. They want to understand,
help, and love cultures that differ from our own.” This is precisely the wisdom that Kairos 10 hopes to share. We can all get involved, and we can all make a difference.
