Elizabeth is highly qualified, very personable and is thrilled to be a part of the bank’s Tulsa branch. “It’s a good feeling to be with a bank which focuses on its employees and communities. It is great to be a part of such a professional team!” She gives much credit to Brian Talkington, Casey Ballard and Barbara Pinkston, who are dedicated and professional bankers and help keep the branch running efficiently. American Heritage Bank is one of the oldest independ-
ently owned and operated banks in Oklahoma. In late 2012 they acquired Osage Federal Bank and The Cleveland Bank, and have expanded their operations to serve 15 communities in Creek, Okmulgee, Osage, Pawnee, Payne, Tulsa and Washington Counties, with 19 locations total. Since 1905, they have focused on providing their customers with the products, services and individualized attention they want and deserve. “We’re proud to be a community bank that has a reputation for investing in our communities,” added Berry. “We also do our best to tailor our services to the needs of our neighbors.” (continued on page 24)

HHips Hurt No More Dolores Qualls of Pryor recommends orthopedic surgeon Dr. LaButti after two successful hip replacements. By Joshua Danker-Dake
Dolores Qualls, of Pryor, Oklahoma, has had total hip replacement surgeries for both hips with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. “I was having great pain in the upper area of my left leg and hip,” Dolores says. “It got to the point that walking had become difficult. The pain kept me awake at night. I’m over 65 and diabetic, so these sorts of
issues weren’t entirely unexpected, but the pain was not manageable at all.” Dolores had her left hip replaced by Dr. LaButti in December of 2010. In May of this year, she went back to have her right knee replaced. “I had a good experience,” she says. “I found the staff to be professional, efficient, and genuinely interested in my

situation. My recovery went well. Dr. LaButti prescribed enough care afterward to ensure my complete recovery: I had at-home nursing care and physical therapy, and I also had several weeks of physical therapy in a local facility. After having both hips replaced, I now walk without a limp, and I’m painfree. Dr. LaButti has restored my quality of life, and I’m extremely happy.” Dolores has referred a number of patients to Dr. LaButti, she says, and their surgeries were also successful. She works for the USDA as the county executive director for Craig, Ottawa and Delaware Counties. She enjoys vacationing and spending time with her large family, and she is active in her church, North Elliot Church of God in Pryor. Dr. LaButti, a boardcertified orthopedic surgeon, has served thousands of satisfied patients. Dr. LaButti

is fellowship trained in lower extremity and joint reconstruction, and offers a complete range of nonsurgical knee and hip treatments, with surgery as a last resort. These options include exercise and physical therapy, guidance for rest and self-care, at-home pain relief, personalized joint care treatment plans, and nutritional supplements. If surgery does prove necessary, Dr. LaButti offers a wide selection of joint procedures, including partial and total joint replacements, traditional open procedures, and
minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures. “Dr. LaButti has given my life back to me,” Dolores says. “I was in a great deal of pain for a long time; now I’m fully functional, with no pain. I wholeheartedly recommend him.”

NNo Need to Shell Out Big Bucks for Fun Go nuts with excitement for the whole family at The Nut House’s annual Pecan and Fun Fest October 19-20.
By Christopher Davis
The 5th annual Pecan and Fun Fest will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 from noon to 5 p.m. What better way to celebrate fall than amongst the turning leaves and pecan trees just outside Claremore along Route 66? Set a reminder, mark your calendar and prepare for a fun weekend of entertainment, food, sweets and shopping. Back in 2006, Hazel Ward went along with her husband and some friends to attend an estate sale at the roadside property of The Nut House, which had run into some trouble over the years. After a somewhat fruitless afternoon, Hazel and her friend decided to leave their husbands to their own devices and do some shopping in town. Much to Hazel’s surprise, she received a phone call from a friend congratulating her on becoming the new owner of The Nut House. Her husband and his friend had purchased the building without consulting her! Mrs. Ward laughs it off, noting her husband is known for antics that would ordinarily drive a spouse “nutty.”
Hazel’s ability to laugh and can-do spirit found her in the position of taking a historical retail outlet and building it into what it is today. The Nut House sells a variety of pecans from all over the country, as well as from their backyard. Additionally, they sell a variety of gifts and snacks, and offer a deli, a dining hall and an
overwhelming selection of sweets, ranging from homemade fudge to chocolate covered nuts. The décor is welcoming, warm and exudes the sort of Oklahoma Route 66 hospitality that continues to attract visitors from all over the world. If you have yet to visit, the perfect opportunity presents itself in October as
the annual Pecan and Fun Fest celebrates its fifth consecutive year. Vendors from all over Green Country will showcase their wares alongside local artists and businesses. Food and drink will be abundant indoors and out. Live music from popular bands from across the region will provide entertainment both days.
There will be plenty of activities for the family, including face painting, pumpkin painting and inflatables. This year, a Battle of the Bands is planned. Vendors and businesses just now discovering this fun opportunity will be pleased to know it is not too late to sign up for a booth. Booth rentals are $125 for indoor spots and $75 for an outdoor location. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this event that routinely draws thousands of attendees from all over. The Pecan and Fun Fest is a growing event that combines a touch of Route 66 nostalgia, great food and loads of fun for the family. Find Your Fair Share of Crafts While Supporting Ministry The Women’s Ministry at Faith Church hosts “Craftacular” on Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
By Christopher Davis
Have you checked your calendar recently? The time to begin planning for the Christmas season is already here! Luckily, an opportunity to get into the giving spirit and spread joy throughout the community is just around the corner. Join the Women’s Ministry at Faith Church in Glenpool as they host their first-ever Craftacular event on Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The craft fair will showcase handmade goods and a huge variety of direct sale vendors, guaranteeing something for everyone on your list. There will be plenty of space for attendees and vendors alike. Faith Church has a spacious facility, and Women’s Ministry Team Member Dawn Hunter definitely takes an approach reminiscent of “the more the merrier.” Booth rental is $50, and Hunter says their goal is to ensure that vendors will come back year after year. “We want to pamper our vendors. Our staff will be
offering them lunch and breaks throughout the day to make sure everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves.” Booth proceeds benefit the
Women’s Ministry for funding the group’s activities at Faith Church and throughout the community. In addition to the wide

www.ValueNews.com variety of goods featured, Craftacular will include many other attractions. Attendees can anticipate a chance to win door prizes and enter drawings for some special gifts. Rest assured, kids will have plenty to do, with face painting, crafts and more activities planned. In addition, concessions will be available, and Faith Church Pastor Toby Youngblood will be on hand making what he calls “the best Indian tacos around.” Not simply a fundraiser for the Women’s Ministry, this event is seen by Ms. Hunter as part of the ministry’s efforts to promote the community. “We want to see the vendors succeed,” she says, noting that there are a lot of fantastic crafters in Green Country. “We would like to see the community support these vendors, who have unique products and are supportive of the Women’s Ministry.” The Craftacular event is a reflection of the work that the Women’s Ministry does. Ms. Hunter explains, “Through the sales and rentals, our ministry raises funds and then uses the money for activities to enrich our community. This helps fulfill the mission of our church and amplifies our ability to reach out to women who are hurting or need help. It’s like a domino effect of support and blessings.” A great example of the good work done at Faith Church is displayed through the participation of member
Katie Cariker. She began getting involved with support efforts for orphans in Haiti following a mission trip. A psychology major at NSU, Katie won a 37” LED flat screen TV in a student activities contest. While many college students would immediately bring the prize back to the dorm and hook up their gaming system, Katie has decided to raffle it at the Craftacular event. The money raised in the raffle will go toward her summer internship with Haitian Impact Christian Ministries (HICM). With such a worthy cause bringing together a wide range of activities planned, chances to win some great prizes and craft vendors drawn from all over Green Country, the Craftacular event at Faith Church promises to be a fun celebration of community and hand-made products. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 12, and plan for a day of fun. TThe Screwtape Letters Don’t miss “The Screwtape Letters,” theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel, at Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 5 (two performances only!). By Sheryl Sowell
“A humorous and lively stage adaptation...The devil has rarely been given his due more perceptively and eruditely…Clever and satirical,” wrote Wilborn Hampton, The New York Times. “Very smart…richly rewarding…exuberant theatricality!” exclaimed Chris Jones in The
Chicago Tribune. “Wickedly witty. Lewis’ topsy-turvy exercises in inverted moral theology were made to be played with lip-smacking relish!” wrote Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal. Lauded by audiences and critics alike, The Screwtape Letters is a play you won’t
want to miss. For two shows only, The Screwtape Letters will be coming to Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 5, at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Call (918) 259-5778 for tickets or stop by the Box Office, 701 S. Main St., Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.

The Screwtape Letters is a smart, provocative and wickedly funny theatrical adaptation of the C.S. Lewis novel about spiritual warfare from a demon’s point of view. It was a hit in New York City, where it played 309 performances at the Westside Theatre in 2010. Prior to that, it ran for six months in Chicago. It also had two engagements at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. where it played for 10 sold-out weeks. Max McLean, who adapted the novel to the stage and directs the production, says, “The Screwtape Letters is one of the great literary creations of the 20th century, offering an imaginative picture of the spiritual battle that goes on within each of us.” The play, set in an eerily stylish office in hell, follows the clever scheming of Satan’s chief psychiatrist, Screwtape, as he entices a human ‘patient’ toward damnation. In this topsy-turvy, morally inverted universe, God is the “Enemy” and the Devil is “Our Father Below.” The stakes are high as human souls are hell’s primary source of food. As His Abysmal Sublimity Screwtape, awardwinning actor Brent Harris creates a “master of the universe” character who mesmerizes the audience as he allures his unsuspecting “patient” down the “soft, gentle path to Hell.” At his feet is Screwtape’s able assistant, Toadpipe (played by Marissa Molnar and Tamala Bakkensen), a grotesque crea-

ture demon who transforms her elastic body into the paragons of vices and characters Screwtape requires to keep his patient away from the “Enemy.” According to McLean, this work is one of the best examples of reverse psychology in all of literature. “The Screwtape Letters follows two story arcs, that of an unsuspecting human on earth – the ‘patient’ – and Screwtape, whose greatest enemy is God. It is a highly entertaining and provocative theatrical event,” says McLean. “But even beyond that, it is an experience that stays with the audience long after the show has ended. It forces people to contemplate their lives and the choices they make each day.” Along with The Chronicles of Narnia (including The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe), The Great Divorce and Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters is still one of Lewis’ most popular and influential works. The story’s success is due to its piercing insight into human nature and the lucid and humorous way Lewis makes his readers squirm in self recognition. From there, they will cycle areas surrounding Claremore Lake. Riders on the longer routes will continue pedaling east of town through challenging, rolling hillsides before they head back to Gazebo Park. At the conclusion of the bike ride, cyclists are urged to stop by the Gazebo, where lots of really nice door prizes will be awarded by drawings as participants return. Ride coordinator Cindy Bissett says, “The Boomarang Diner is offering a great Breakfast Ride Special beginning at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.” It will include one egg, two pieces of bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit and

SSuperior Has Its Ducts in a Row Call Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning to help improve your home’s air quality and reduce heating and cooling bills.
By Deanna Rebro
Uneven temperatures throughout your home? It’s a common mystery to many homeowners, so they just live with it and continue to pay high heating and cooling bills for areas that are not properly climate controlled. But it does not have to be that way. Bill Smith of
Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning understands why this happens and what can be done to correct it. According to Bill, in time, metal ductwork in the floors of older homes is prone to rusting. As a house moves, the rusted spots crack and mildew, mold and fungus get into the ducts

while warm or cool air gets out. The area in disrepair has a noticeably different and often uncomfortable temperature. The solution lies in a one and only EPA-registered air duct sealant that sticks to the holes in the ducts to create an even air flow through the system. The rubbery substance resists any future house movement so cracks cannot reappear. Providing superior air quality while saving people money in the long term is what Bill does best. The native Tulsan has spent more than 22 years in the air duct business. Earlier this year he launched Superior Air Duct Coating & Cleaning with business partner Adan Vasquez. “I’ve seen what processes work and don’t work in this business. I want to offer solutions that are once and for all, so the same problem does not recur,” he explains. Many homeowners and business owners ask him what can be done to improve the air quality they breathe. Thoroughly cleaning the ducts and coating them is the answer.
The process begins with a free video inspection. A tiny specialized camera makes its way through the ducts to determine their condition. Rust spots, blockages or collapsed sections are quickly identified, as well as the contaminants that have accumulated over time. The customer can watch the procedure on screen with the technician so he or she can see exactly what is causing the problem. As part of Superior’s 8-point process, necessary repairs are made and the ducts are thoroughly cleaned and then coated with a patented product that literally adds years to air systems, as they no longer have to work as hard. The customer saves on monthly heating and cooling bills, and the air remains clean. There are no more buildups to cause health concerns. “This really sets us apart from anyone else,” Bill says. “We have the strongest warranty available – 25 years – and the warranty is transferrable.” If a homeowner decides to sell, the new buyer can be reassigned to the remaining

FFight the Bite, Net a Village, Save Lives Kairos 10 aims to wipe out malaria with your help. By Stephanie Reed
Kairos 10, a nonprofit organization dedicated to wiping out malaria in Ghana, has enjoyed great success in protecting over 72,000 people from this vicious disease through the distribution of mosquito nets. Founded by Phyllis Morris and Katheryn Pennington in 2010, Kairos 10 purchases Ghanaian beads made from recycled glass, vinyl records, bones, and brass from local merchants, and pays native women to make jewelry. The jewelry is then
sold in the United States, and the proceeds are used to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets. This organization, with the help of 60 volunteers across the United States, has been more successful than the founders ever imagined. “We thought initially we would be lucky to sell 300 bracelets, but the demand was incredible, and we have been able to reach so many people in need,” Katheryn explains. Dependent on volunteers for

sales and outreach, Katheryn was floored when longtime friend and fellow volunteer, Julie Ryker, told Katheryn that her daughter’s fifth grade class at Jenks West Intermediate wanted to join in the fight. These volunteers had lofty goals: they wanted to donate 75 nets. The funds for these net were to be raised primarily through T-shirts featuring their theme, “Fight the Bite,” jewelry sales, soccer ball decorating and donating, and asking for donations. Over the course of several months, 120 Jenks students were able to raise the funds for 760 mosquito nets. The students were astounded at their success. A fire was lit in their hearts, and many had never experienced this joy of giving. This fire burned so brightly that students were moved to go on and collect 500 pairs of flip flops to help stop the spread of intestinal parasites. These acts of charity not only benefited the families in Ghana, but the students at Jenks West Intermediate were also exposed to cultural differences and conversations. These acts of charity helped to cultivate generous and well-

rounded youth in Oklahoma. In January, Julie Ryker travelled to Ghana and distributed the nets to those in need, and they decided to dedicate a fresh water well in honor of the Jenks West Intermediate students. Pictures were taken, videos were shared, and soccer balls were distributed to Ghanaian youth. “Volunteerism is such a powerful thing,” says Julie. “Katheryn’s passion just spills over. It has impacted my entire family, and because of her passion, my children have a much more global view. They want to understand,
help, and love cultures that differ from our own.” This is precisely the wisdom that Kairos 10 hopes to share. We can all get involved, and we can all make a difference. Lucas Metal Works provides a full line of high-quality metal products and services, from agricultural equipment to roofing materials.
By Christopher Davis
Lucas Metal Works uses highquality steel to produce building and roofing materials, agricultural equipment and custom welding. Customers can rest easy knowing they are investing in steel or aluminum products that will look good, stand the test of time and, most importantly, save energy, time and money. In 1968, Raymond Lucas started up a small custom metal works shop, and it was not long before Lucas’s big ideas outgrew his humble workshop. Driven by the demand for quality and efficiency in design, Lucas filled niches in several industries and saw business boom over the decades. What began as a one-room workshop now stands as a sprawling facility that employs a small army of metal experts. Nestled amongst the farms and ranches of Ochelata, just outside Tulsa, Lucas Metal Works continues to lead the way with several divisions of products and services offered throughout the Midwest. As homeowners and business leaders look for ways to increase durability, save money and become more
energy-efficient, Lucas Metal Works offers a solution with their expansive line of metal roofs. Metal panel roofs not only look sleek and last much longer than standard roofs, but save money and energy as well. “We use 26 gauge metal panels and provide 16 colors to choose from, and back our materials by offering a 40 year warranty,” explains Tammy Laakso, marketing and sales manager. In this age of increasing energy costs and decreasing resources, installing a metal roof is a sound investment. Lucas Metal Works provides a full line of components for industrial, agricultural, commercial and home structures. Because everything is manufactured at their facility, they are able to offer affordable, innovative designs and options to suit virtually any need, from that add-on workshop in the backyard to commercial structures, like storage facilities or warehouses. The Groundhog Arena Tool – designed in 1996 by Raymond Lucas (founder of Lucas Metal Works) – is popular at rodeos and similar
environments, and is considered the signature product of Lucas Metal Works. A father and grandfather of barrel racers, Mr. Lucas saw a need for one tool that could efficiently groom dirt surfaces for arenas. Lucas designed and manufactured the Ground Hog. This unique tool breaks up the dirt and levels it out, providing a better, safer dirt surface for horses and racers. Lucas’s Ground Hog replaced a timely and labor-intensive process that required multiple tools. An extensive list of associations and events use the Ground Hog, including the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and the Better Barrel Races World Finals in Oklahoma City. “The original unit, built over 17 years ago, is still in use today in the Lucas family arena,” boasts Laakso. In addition to the Ground Hog, Lucas Metal Works manufactures a broad range of farming and agricultural equipment and services. This line features the same high quality craftsmanship and durability that made the Ground Hog

Men: Look, Feel and Perform Better All men will experience male menopause sometime in their lives. It can be treated. By Duane Blankenship
Dr. Laura Bilbruck is the medical director of Results Medical Spa, a full-service medical and wellness spa located at St. John in Broken Arrow.
Results Medical Spa is a comprehensive, full-service medical and wellness spa providing non-surgical treatment to men and women who want to make the best of how they look, feel and perform. “We offer procedures that have no downtime, have minimal side effects, are minimally invasive, and are painless but effective,” says Dr. Laura Bilbruck, medical director. “Our non-surgical treatments are accessible and affordable.” Dr. Bilbruck’s desire is to help others recapture the vitality they may have lost over the years. Andropause, or male menopause, is the result of a steady decline in testosterone and other related hormones, such as thyroid, DHEA and cortisol. The decline begins when a man is in his late 20s and symptoms are generally felt by the late 30s to early 40s. “Many men are coming to us for hormone therapy,” said Dr. Bilbruck. “They’ve realized that the hormones
BIXBY, GLENPOOL, JENKS, SAPULPA
that give them energy, boost sex drive, and allow the building of lean muscle mass have begun to decline.” Testosterone is the antiaging hormone in men. It gives them strength, fuels their sex drive, and facilitates bone growth. It also levels out their moods and enables them to concentrate. Testosterone keeps men motivated and fuels their desire to be productive and to succeed. “No man escapes andropause,” says Dr Bilbruck. “Fortunately, with proper male hormone treatment, the symptoms of andropause can be eliminated in as little as four to six weeks after hormones are balanced.” Results Medical Spa is passionate about treating men’s health and encouraging healthy aging. They are part of a national network of doctors providing male hormone treatment to clients using a common set of protocols established by the pioneers in hormone therapy. Above all else, the treatments are safe and effective. “There is a right and a wrong way to do testosterone replacement,” said Dr. Bilbruck. “The right way does not cause side effects and will have you feeling like a new man in no time.” “As men age,” she continued, “testosterone levels begin to diminish and they experience the symptoms of andropause.” Some of the
Page 19
symptoms include fatigue, low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, weight gain, depression, irritability, hair loss, prostate problems and sleeping disorders. “If you’re experiencing any of these problems, you might be andropausal. The good news is that we can help get your engine running again with proper hormone therapy.” Men, you can now reclaim the energy, mental sharpness and passion you once had. Spend meaningful time with your family. Improve your love life and reclaim the passion for your partner. Feel better, look better, and be happier. Suffering with the negative symptoms of andropause is unnecessary. If you’ve found yourself at a point in your life where you don’t look or feel like you think you should as you’ve aged, Dr. Bilbruck and Results Medical Spa believe you should do something about it. Contact them today for an evaluation appointment.

ZZombies Invade Halloween Festival A new addition to the Castle of Muskogee’s Halloween Festival has attendees “shooting” zombies in the Dark Castle.
By John Owen
The Castle of Muskogee's Halloween Festival features events from not scary to very scary.
Expect something different at the 2013 Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee. Eleven great Halloween events, one incredible location: 3400 West Fern Mountain Road in Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park. You’ll find thrills for the entire family, both inside and outside the Castle, located a short 35 minute drive from Tulsa on the Muskogee Turnpike. As the brave among you enter the 10,000-square-foot Dark Castle, you will be issued an infrared assault weapon that fires special “zombie bullets” to protect yourself and kill zombies while you search for survivors of the raging zombie wars inside. For you other courageous souls, try a walk through the woods along the Trail of Blood where the lost souls of those who have gone before will guide you; the Torture Chamber shows what really happened in medieval times in the depths of the dungeons; Casa Morte is a
labyrinth through the 12th Century Castle with doom and mystery around every corner; Domus Horrificus takes you to the areas where your favorite horror monsters dwell; the Ultimate Maze where most of you will find your way. For those of you with faint heart, there is always the Haunted Hayride, a trip that is sure to keep you on your toes as you ride through the Halloween Festival grounds; the Enchanted Boardwalk is your chance to stroll on the boardwalk filled with Halloween inflatables; experience live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the Magic of Matthew VanZee and the Raks al Hassana Mummy Dancers. For the little ones 8 years of age and under, the Halloween Festival hosts Halloween Land – an old school carnival of kid-friendly games, face painting, and prizes with absolutely no scares! Plus, there is a fantastic Pumpkin Patch. The Halloween Village, with free
admission, is the place where everyone experiences the very best of Halloween ghost stories, dancing to great music under the DJ tent, hot and cold food and drinks, games and bounce houses. Parking and admission to the Halloween Village is free. Tickets must be purchased for events and the prices range from $2 to $15. Advance tickets may be purchased online. Go to www.okcastle.com to check out ticket prices, combo packages and specials. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Halloween Festival will be held October 4-5, 1112, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Halloween Land open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.). For more information, contact

HHike for Healing
The Tristesse Grief Center hosts the 3rd annual Hike for Healing, an awe-inspiring scene encouraging camaraderie as we honor our loved ones, on Saturday, October 5.
By Christopher Davis
The 3rd annual Hike for Healing takes place on Saturday, October 5 at Turkey Mountain. Hosted by The Tristesse Grief Center, Hike for Healing brings together a variety of people for a 5K walk/run/hike to honor loved ones. There will be a variety of activities planned as well, offering many ways to commemorate the passing of those who touched our lives. The Tristesse Grief Center is a nonprofit that offers counseling and support to the bereaved as they cope with loss and make their way to a renewed sense of health. The Grief Center, which serves about 5,000 people annually in the region, specializes in individual and loss-specific group counseling for a variety of life-changing events. “Our mission has grown over the years beyond bereavement services,” explains Executive Director Susan Bramsch. “We also provide support for life losses, such as the loss of a job, a divorce or other significant
life events.” The organization provides a variety of ongoing grief support programs in many settings, both at their office as well as out in the community. The Healing Hearts Club is a program that partners with schools throughout northeast Oklahoma, free of charge. Experiencing growth of more than 200 percent recently, the center is developing plans to expand their facility. They just broke ground on a new playhouse, which will prove useful for the children engaged in play therapy. With so many in need of TGC’s services, they are hoping the Hike for Healing will become a major community event to help meet this growing need for services in Tulsa. The Hike for Healing offers a unique opportunity to come together and honor the memories of loved ones in a healthy, outdoor environment. All are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. Registration is $30 for adults ($20 for TGC
clients). Children 12 and under are free. The day begins early with registration at 6:45 am, followed by a welcome presentation at 7:15 am. Shortly after, a sunrise balloon release will celebrate the memories of lost loved ones. The timed 5K trail run starts at 7:30. The Memorial Walk and Candle-lighting Ceremony starts at 7:35. The 5K run starts at 7:45 a.m. The event will feature a variety of activities, including music, poetry, special guest speakers and more. “My favorite part of the event is the balloon release at sunrise,” says Alissa Drescher, Program Director. Bramsch agrees, “There’s something about being at Turkey Mountain at sunrise that gives you a sense of awe. Releasing hundreds of balloons in remembrance of our loved ones as the sun comes up will be a special moment. I’m always mesmerized by how strangers quickly become friends and

develop a sense of camaraderie at this event. We don’t normally get a chance to share our experiences of loss in the everyday world, so I think this sort of environment lends itself well to building lifelong friendships.” Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 5 and support this event and the organization that helps so many people cope with grief and loss. Thousands Drawn to Main Street continued from page 1 depth and breadth of cultural life in Oklahoma. This one-day festival has been growing steadily over the years, and organizers anticipate well over 10,000 attendees. As Art on Main celebrates its tenth year, the festival promises to be the best yet, showcasing some of the finest art and music from the region and bringing some fresh attractions to downtown Jenks. There will be plenty of entertainment and activities for everybody. Live music is scheduled throughout the day, with a special appearance by Joshua Yarbrough and the Boogie Rhythm Boys. Demonstrations from Jenks Dance Academy, Abbey Road Dance Academy and Just Gotta Dance Cloggers will round out the day’s performances. Christopher Westfall is one of the many artists scheduled to showcase at Art on Main. Organizers expect over a hundred Oklahoma artists and vendors this year. Nick DeMoss, director of communications for the Jenks Chamber of Commerce, is proud of the fact that Art on Main puts the
focus on the wealth of art and music from which the community draws. “Every artist and performer is from Oklahoma,” he explains. “One of the requirements during the submission and selection process is that they reside in our state.” The festival is a great opportunity for local and regional artists to engage with the public and for fans to meet the person behind the art. Look for some new interactive art features this year. The Chamber has partnered with some local schools and colleges to bring student artists to the festival. A zone will be sectioned off for chalk art, open for all ages. As usual, count on a robust kids’ zone with plenty of activities to keep the little ones busy and engaged in the fun. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of the Jenks community and their partners. Volunteers from all over the city and local schools donate their time to assist with the festival from set up to clean up. Financial support from sponsors Public Service of Oklahoma, Bounce Pro and Tulsa Winch Group

presented at Mabee Center the evening of October 15, 2013. Spotlighting the concert will be the Swon Brothers, the American country music duo from Muskogee, Oklahoma, who took third place honors on NBC’s “The Voice.” The Swon Brothers have been playing to sold-out crowds across the country since their success on the show. “The Swon Brothers, Zach and Colton, were also previously honored as Rising Star recipients for 2013 by the OMHOF,” said Smith. In addition to a one-hour concert by the Swon Brothers, the evening will also showcase performances from other Oklahoma musical greats including Sandi Patty. The 2013 inductees into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame include Jimmy Webb, Mason Williams, Barbara McAlister, Sandi Parry, Norma Jean, Bob Dunn (posthumous), Neal Schon, Roger
Davis (Governor’s Award), The Swon Brothers, and the Mabee Center. “We are delighted to be hosting the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame as they honor the great musical talent we have here in Oklahoma,” says Tony Winters, Mabee Center general manager. “The celebration of our 40th year anniversary comes to a close at the end of October, and I cannot think of a better way to end it than by hosting another Oklahoma treasure and honoring these artists.” Since its beginning in 1972, the Mabee Center has been known for attracting top-notch entertainment while maintaining a safe, familyfriendly environment. They have hosted some of the biggest names in the world including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Luciano Pavarotti, The Bee Gees, Garth Brooks, Jay Leno, Reba McEntire, Justin Bieber and many, many others.
“In honor of our 40th anniversary,” said Smith, “we recently launched the Mabee Center eMuseum, a showcase of the rich history and memories from over the years.” You can now take an exclusive tour of Mabee Center’s history, the building process, a gallery, and much more. This spectacular historic accounting was assembled and designed by Shawn Bender, graphic design/web coordinator for the Mabee Center. Shawn was assisted by ORU students who spent hundreds of hours perusing the archives. “The project was a major undertaking,” said Smith, “and we are really proud of the final product that enables us to share the spectacular Mabee Center history with others.” Please visit the eMuseum at www.mabeecenter.com. “The induction concert will be an end-arena show with 8,000 expected to attend,” said Smith. When you
visit the website you’ll find more event information plus ticket prices, ranging from $10 to $175 for a VIP Package that includes a Studio One Reception prior to the concert. Buy your tickets online or visit the Ticket Office by entering the north doors of Mabee Center. Join in the celebration and induction of our own Mabee Center and the other talented 2013 Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame inductees on October 15.

LLearning Disabilities Fall Conference The Learning Disabilities Association of Oklahoma's fall conference, "Bullying and Its Impact on Students with Disabilities: Identification, Prevention and Invervention," will be held November 1, 2013.
By Deanna Rebro
Bullying is not good, by any means. But bullying kids with learning disabilities can cause life-long negative repercussions. The subject is so serious that the Learning Disabilities Association of Oklahoma (LDAO) selected "Bullying and Its Impact on Students with Disabilities: Identification, Prevention and Intervention" as the topic for its annual fall conference on Friday, November 1. Linda Modenbach, president of the state organization and board
member of the national affiliate, Learning Disabilities of America (LDA), believes this is one of the most important issues the group has ever presented. “Every student must feel safe and secure in order to do his or her best and reach their full potential,” she explains. But the student with learning disabilities faces additional challenges that are intensified when bullied. Results of a study published in “Pediatrics” indicates, “Ramifications include lower
Linda Mondenbach, president, LDAO.
academic achievement and aspirations, higher truancy, feelings of alienation in school and poor relationships with peers.” Conference attendees can expect to walk away with a clear definition of what is, and is not, bullying. They’ll learn ways to prevent it, what to do when it happens and how to best handle the problem so that the victimized child feels empowered to deal with the situation. Keynote speaker is Connie Parr, past president of LDA and a pediatric nurse practitioner in Aurora, Illinois. LDA is the largest non-profit volunteer organization that serves as an advocate for people with learning disabilities. It has more than 200 state and local affiliates in 42 states and Puerto Rico. The work of LDA teaches parents and children how to structure their lives so that they can best cope with each child’s individual struggles. And they, indeed, are individual. The wide scope of learning disabilities includes everything from children
having difficulty communicating to those with a high intelligence and high anxiety level that, when controlled, can result in high achievement as well. Conference presenters include legal representatives who will be on hand to answer questions and provide clarification on key points of federally-mandated antibullying programs in schools. Numerous break-out sessions will address issues more completely, including ageappropriate topics for dealing with students from pre-school through high school. “The focus is on intervention strategies, with examples of research-based techniques that have been successful,” says Linda. Early identification of bullying and cooperative intervention among parents and school officials can get the student the help he or she needs to become a responsible, productive citizen. The retired Jenks educator explains that the sophistication of modern electronics equipment and relative ease of use among young people make cyber
bullying a major concern that will also be covered in the conference. Uploading embarrassing and unflattering photographs is a favorite pastime among cyber bullies. This malicious behavior can be seriously hurtful to anyone, but to those with learning disabilities the effects can be devastating. Oldschool thinking would call for parents to say, “Just ignore it.” But ignoring the problem does not work. “Bullying calls for immediate reporting,” says Linda, “and immediate resolution.” The LDAO annual fall conference will be held on Friday, November 1 at the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Learning Center. Educators, school administrators, concerned professionals, parents and students are urged to attend. For more information, contact

Oktoberfest Brings Tradition TTulsa and New Experiences Organizers promise German authenticity for patrons of all ages and interests. By Stacey Roggendorff
Tulsa’s largest fall festival turns 35 this year. Set for October 17-20, Tulsa Oktoberfest is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers a long weekend of authentic German celebration, including live music, carnival; rides, games and of course, food and drinks, among numerous other attractions. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn pass is available online,
allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $15 wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $5 and $10 or patrons can ride the free shuttles which run two routes through downtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas.
“Oktoberfest is a timehonored tradition for Tulsans and visitors alike,” says Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. “Oktoberfest offers entertainment, activities, and plenty of food and specialty beverages for everyone. It’s no surprise upwards of 60,000 people flock to Tulsa’s favorite Chicken Dance venue.” Live music is always a favorite and this year, several bands are traveling to Oktoberfest from Germany, including Kasplattnrocker,
Known for their modern take on traditional Bavarian music, Kasplattnrocker has been touring Europe for the better part of a decade.
Penny’s Oktoberfest Projekt and Celle Fire Blaskapelle. Keeping with German tradition, numerous beer tents will feature a variety of great beer for all tastes. A total of 42 domestic and import beers will be available, including premium brands such as Warsteiner, Paulaner, Konig and Hofbrau. Beer tents include Der Biergarten, Der Bierkeller, Das Esszelt and Die Bierstube. Das Fassler Hall Stammtisch Zelt will feature brews from Tulsa’s Marshall’s Brewing Company, including a special recipe made exclusively for Tulsa’s Oktoberfest. Wine, mixed drinks and nonalcoholic beverages also will be served. A new commemorative beer stein will be offered for the first time this year. Called the Masskrug, this one-litre (33.8 fluid ounce) stein is designed to closely resemble the mug frequently used in Bavarian beer gardens and beer halls and is a staple of the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. In addition to drink options, Oktoberfest will offer more than a dozen different food vendors. Many local restaurants will be on site with a wide variety of menu choices for all tastes. Some highlights include
Seigi’s sausage plate dinner, bratwurst pizza and Lanjaeger (German beef jerky). Ludger’s Weiner Schnitzel sandwich, apple strudel and Bavarian cheesecake will be available for purchase. The kids tent, Das Jugendzelt, will offer a variety of entertainment for children each day, including magic shows, circus skills presentations, live music, a science show and more. Authentic and Germaninspired games are fun to play and watch. The Dachshund Dash is a race featuring “wiener dogs.” The McNellie’s Bier Barrel Race allows teams of six to compete for the fastest keg roll. The Masskrugstemmen, otherwise known as the Strong Stein, is an endurance competition where contestants hold full mugs of beer at arm’s length until there is a winner. The International Artisan Market is a comfortable area to shop and relax. While exploring the many booths, patrons can enjoy coffee and pastries sold by Foolish Things Coffee Company. CCould Your Old Driveway Use Some Curb Appeal? LCI Concrete specializes in concrete driveways, patios and other flatwork.
By Duane Blankenship As a homeowner in northeastern Oklahoma, you’ve probably already discovered that winter snow, ice and corrosive salt take their toll on your home’s driveway. Given a little time and a few hard winters, most of us have witnessed firsthand the pitting and flaking that begins defacing our driveways. The deterioration gradually worsens until it has a definite negative effect on your home’s curb appeal and even its value. There is, however, a simple way to get rid of that old “eye sore” leading up to your garage, while greatly improving the curb
appeal. LCI Concrete is in business to remove driveways, patios, and other concrete flatwork that is showing signs of damage for one reason or another. They then replace the damaged concrete with the finest concrete and strengthening materials available. Kalan Paul is the owner of LCI Concrete and has more than 20 years of experience in his chosen field, serving both commercial and residential customers. His company has specialized in the pouring and scoring of concrete driveways,

recycled into granular fill or concrete aggregate. The average driveway takes about two days to break out, remove, prep, pour, and score. LCI first lays 3/8-inch rebar on industry recommended 2-foot grid patterns after the subsurface has been properly and professionally prepared. Using industry standards of 3500 psi, LCI then pours and finishes the concrete. These standards are incorporated into every job they do. You may drive on your new driveway three days after the concrete is poured. Here’s a great tip from

patios and most other flatwork including sidewalks. Kalan attended Northeastern State University, and he and his wife, Aimee, reside in Broken Arrow with their four children. LCI is fully insured and is a member in good standing with both the Broken Arrow and Tulsa chambers of commerce. “We have but one goal,” said Kalan, “and that is to make every customer proud of their new LCI concrete product that will serve them well for years and years to come.” When one approaches your property, their first image is influenced by the driveway. If it’s unsightly with corrosion and flaking, it’s not going to make a good impression. Kalan says concrete is durable, and when the soil and concrete are properly prepared and poured, you can expect it to last for at least 20 to 30 years. And you will rest easy knowing that LCI has the knowledge to do the job right each time. Replacing a damaged driveway is not inexpensive, but with its expected lifespan it might be a good investment and add value to your home. Concrete brightens up the areas around our homes and businesses at night. It is also an environmentally-friendly product because it is composed of renewable resources that can be

SStay Safe with Walk-In Tubs and Showers Community Builders offers luxurious feature-packed products designed with safety in mind. By Duane Blankenship
Greg Wolter, president and founder of Community Builders, Inc., began the company over 30 years ago. With offices in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Community Builders is known for their quality home remodeling specialties throughout Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. “We are not general
contractors,” says Greg. “Our specialties include energyefficient composite siding, replacement windows, SmartCoat spray-on siding, gutter guard systems, sunrooms second to none, metal roof systems, and Jacuzzi and Luxury Bath products.” Community Builders wants to earn your

business and takes great pride in the level of service they provide and the long list of quality, proven products they recommend. A truly simple pleasure is finding the time to relax and take a warm bath. With it, the cares of the day seem to fade away, along with the aches and pains most of us feel as we grow older. Until recently, it was difficult and dangerous for seniors as they stepped up and over to get into a tub. Many aging Americans with mobility issues still fear the simple act of getting into a bath or shower. Slipping and falling is persistently on their minds and is a safety concern. One specialty of Community Builders is bathroom remodeling. They recommend several products from two manufacturers, Jacuzzi® and Luxury Bath®. Both have introduced product lines featuring walk-in tubs and walk-in showers that are also accessible by wheelchair for those with limited mobility. These new innovations have attained the broad purpose of advancing the quality of life for any individual, not just seniors. Even if retirement is many years away, you could benefit
from a remodel sooner rather than later, one that could serve you now and throughout your senior years. Collectively, Jacuzzi, Luxury Bath, and Community Builders are keenly focused on providing highest quality products that make our lives better and safer. “Most of our customers are thrilled when they find out that products are now available that combine the safety of a walk-in bath tub with the benefits of a hot tub,” said Greg. “They are now able to have a luxurious resort experience in the privacy of their own homes, whenever they want.” If you’re thinking of remodeling, now is a great time to do it. Community Builders offers 12 months “same as cash” or easy low payment plans tailored to suit you and your budget. Remodeling adds to the value of your home and is something you and your family will enjoy for many years. Greg Wolter currently serves on the National board of Advisors for GE Home Improvement Lending. Community Builders is both a respected and professional organization and you are
