Rise of the Blue Phoenix Blue Phoenix Buffet in Owasso offers a seafood buffet variety that is the best in the Tulsa area according to customers. By Carol Beck-Round

Hao Zheng, owner, Blue Phoenix Buffet in Owasso.

Free Financial Classes for All Linda Rainwater, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones, provides valuable information that will help you secure your financial future.

With seven buffets, including three hot bars, two fruit and salad bars, one sushi bar and a Hibachi grill, the owners of Blue Phoenix Buffet & Sushi like offering traditional Chinese food as well as Americanized versions to their customers. “I like to cook,” says Anthony Jiang, who co-owns the popular Owasso restaurant with his business partner, Hao Zheng. “I also like introducing traditional Chinese food to American people.”

According to Jiang, “Traditional Chinese food is not that easy to cook and many restaurants in America don’t carry it. We want to make our customers happy and at the same time, help them to learn about traditional Chinese food.” Tremella lotus seed, a sweet soup, is one example of a traditional Chinese food that involves a lengthy process to prepare. However, it is a very healthy dish – and very tasty. (continued on page 22)

Go Team! Surceé Home Décor & Gifts offers a variety of items for OU, OSU and Rams fans. By Susan Erler

By Stephanie Reed We have all heard the saying that money makes the world go ‘round. Unfortunately for most of us, things like mutual funds, 401Ks, and IRAs feel like daunting terminology rather than solid plans for our future. Linda Rainwater, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor, understands that the vocabulary and perception of her industry make most folks shy away from truly understanding their financial future.

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

LESSONS OF SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OWNERS BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Many of my clients are successful business owners. I am always interested in figuring out what makes them tick and what lessons they have learned along the way. Some of the characteristics that I have noticed amongst this bunch are that they are typically extremely driven, goal-oriented, and strong willed. They are not the kind to sit back and let things happen to them. They go out and make things happen. They not only dream about what they want in their future, they take bold action. On the downside they can be impatient, demanding, and hard-headed. So beware. The following are some “words of wisdom” from my experience and from successful entrepreneurs I work with: Follow your passion.Figure out what you love to do, not what you like to do. If you are not passionate about what you do, then you will never be really good at it. Either do or don’t. There is no try! In other words, set your mind to a goal. Take action towards that goal every day. “Trying” is a set up for excuses and failure.

Put the right people in the right positions. You must have the right squirrel in the right tree. If you are asking employees to work in a position that does not match their skill set or personality type, they will not do their tasks well and they will hate their job. Create relationships with your customers. Be irreplaceable. Also remember, not everyone is your customer! Don’t just dream about it. Do it! There are a lot of people just dreaming. Perseverance is key. Starting and running a business is hard work. You have to have perseverance to push through the hard stuff. Remember, if it was easy, everyone would do it. Thicken your skin. This is the road less traveled. There will be challenges and struggles. There will be people and situations that disappoint and hurt you. Get over it and move on. Be authentic. Your brand is built around you. It must represent who you are and what you do or it will not resonate with people.

Always do the right thing. Period. Have a succession plan for your business. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversify. Invest in things outside your business. Plan for your future. For more information about business succession planning and investing for your future go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. GGet Inspired to Redecorate On a Budget Whether you like new or repurposed, you can find both at Rust & Ruffles.

By Carol Beck-Round available.” To help customers learn to repurpose their own furniture, Rust & Ruffles will offer chalkpainting classes once a month, with the first class set for September 17 at 6 p.m. The class, taught by Rosario Soma, one of the store’s vendors, includes the supplies to complete a small piece of furniture like an end table or nightstand. The cost is $75. Participants in the class will have a choice of paint colors and receive step-by-step instructions to complete their project. They will also be served snacks. Interested individuals can call the shop, stop by, or register on their Facebook page. “Be sure and like us on Facebook,” says Tricia. “We have monthly giveaways and will be giving away merchandise or a gift certificate.” Tricia adds, “For those who don’t want to do the painting themselves, Rust & Ruffles has vendors who can custom paint furniture for you.” In addition to furniture, shoppers can find items like new clothing, including junior’s and tween girls, as well as unique baby clothing and gift items.

When you walk through the door of Rust & Ruffles, the merchandise available will not only surprise you, but you just might be inspired by some of the repurposed items to redecorate your home without spending a fortune. “It’s a very cost effective way to redecorate on a budget,” says owner Tricia Allen. Located at 86th Street North and 129th East Avenue in Owasso, right behind 1st Bank, the 3,000-square-foot building is, according to Tricia, a one-stop shop where you can pick up a gift for a friend, or pick up something new or unique for yourself or your home. With over 26 vendors – and room for more – the store makes finding that special item for a friend, relative or yourself simple. “We have the best prices, the best vendors,” says Tricia, “and a lot of nice repurposed furniture and other items.” Tricia, who likes shabby chic and vintage furniture herself, offers her customers a variety of choices. “They can purchase furniture that has already been repurposed or find that special piece and repurpose it themselves. I like to have both

Other vendor offerings include handmade greeting cards, jewelry, trendy Chevron dresses, shirts and sunglasses – just to name a few. “One of our vendors has adorable charms and bracelets,” she says, “and they are very affordable.” Tricia, whose background is in retail, gained business acumen through owning a previous Owasso business, Lady Denae and Baby. “I love retail,” she adds, “and I’ve always thought Owasso needed something like Rust & Ruffles.” She took ownership of the business on August 1. Previously, the shop was called Gallery of Family Treasures. “It was primarily clothing and home décor,” she says. “The clothing available was on consignment, which we will no longer have.” Commenting on the name and the new business direction, she explains, “I want to offer trendy items and have the best vendors in town. I think we already do. I want Rust & Ruffles to be the perfect little shop to find unique items for your house or to buy a gift.” Her enthusiasm for repurposed decorating carries

IIt’s Greek to Me Experience Greece without a passport or jet lag at the 53rd annual Tulsa Greek Festival.

By Christopher Davis

The Tulsa Greek Festival is the longest-running ethnic festival in Tulsa. Celebrating its 53rd year, the event showcases Greek culture with authentic dances, costumes, music and, of course, food and drink. TGF runs September 19-21 and is hosted by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, located at Guthrie Ave. and 13th Street. Greg Metevelis, general chairman for Tulsa Greek Festival, has a strong connection to the event that is almost twice his age. As a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, he has grown alongside the festival. “I’ve been involved since I was a kid, first as a performer in the dances. Then, as I grew up, I got more involved with organizing the festival,” he explains. Now in his third year as general chairman for the festival, Metevelis is excited to see the event grow and continue to engage, entertain and educate the community. The Greek holiday has become a favorite event for Tulsans, providing cultural education and entertainment,

as well as much needed support for the various community partners in Tulsa and beyond. Money that is raised from the event helps fund the many projects and initiatives that Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church partners with. “Throughout the year, our church supports over a dozen charities. Some are local and some are located throughout the country,” explains Mr. Metevelis. Some of these projects include ongoing work with John 3:16, Iron Gate Community, Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless, Camp Agape Cancer NW and the Special Olympics. For three days, Tulsa Greek Festival will offer indoor and outdoor entertainment for all ages and interests. The event will showcase ethnic dances and music throughout the weekend. Performed by parishioners, young and old, dressed in authentic ethnic costumes, these dances bring to life ancient traditions and tell the stories of love, war, passion and adventure. The marketa (marketplace) will feature Greek wares ranging from

ceramics, jewelry, clothes and much more. A new official Tulsa Greek Festival T-shirt designed for 2013, as well as “Cooking Greek for Tulsa” – a cookbook comprised of favorite recipes shared by Tulsa-area Greeks – will be on sale at the marketa. Tulsa Greek Festival will have plenty of food and drink to fuel the celebration. Guests can build their own dinner, choosing from a variety of home-cooked entrées and sides, including lamb, chicken or pork soulvaki (shish kabob), gyros, spanakopita, tiropita and much more. Desserts and bakery items will be plentiful, too, featuring authentic homemade favorites like baklava, finikia, kourambiethes, and koulourakia. The tavern will serve Greek wine and beer, bottled water and EPSA beverages (non-alcoholic carbonated drinks imported from Greece). “We have a kafenion, where you can get Greek-style coffee,” says Greg, adding a perfect pairing for the pastries offered at the bakery. Along with the entertainment and activities offered at the festival, guests

Greg Metevelis is general chairman for the Tulsa Greek Festival, running September 19-21 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

will also have chances to win cash prizes by purchasing tickets for a raffle. The Tulsa Greek Festival is a fantastically unique event that brings the community together for a weekend of celebrating all things Greek. Guests can go online to www.TulsaGreekFestival.com to print off free admission tickets for the event. The event welcomes all ages, and

knowledge of Greek language or customs is not required. Just bring your appetite for great food, dance and your passion for life!

Painting Is Part of His Heritage Professional painting is more than just a job for Steve Rainwater – it’s in his blood.

By Carol Beck-Round

You might say that paint runs in Steve Rainwater’s veins. He’s not only been a professional painter for almost 40 years, he has followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who were also painting professionals by trade. That’s four generations

of taking pride in a profession that’s not as easy as you might think, according to Rainwater. Of course, you can go to your local home improvement store and pick up a gallon of paint and a brush and roller, but if you’re not familiar with the process or if you don’t

OWASSO / COLLINSVILLE

select the right tools, your project might not turn out the way you had envisioned. That’s where a professional, like Rainwater, can help. “It’s more than measuring the room or the exterior of the home to figure out how much paint you will need,” he says. “Paint quality differs. It also depends on whether you are painting new construction or painting a previously painted area.” The texture of a wall or exterior can also determine how much and what kind of paint you need, he explains. “Color matching existing paint can also be a challenge,” he adds, “but it’s just one step in the process of getting the job done.” Other problems

Steve Rainwater has been painting professionally for almost 40 years. With residential and commercial experience, Steve owes his expertise to the three generations before him: his father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all in the painting business.

Rainwater sometimes encounters – that many homeowners might not realize need to be corrected before painting – is structural damage caused by settling roof leaks that have damaged the walls and mold. “Each of these problems must be corrected before painting is started,” he explains. “Otherwise, you’ll still have those problems. Paint can’t fix these underlying problems.” One question he usually gets from prospective customers is, “Do you spray the walls or use a brush and roller?” He says, “Customers prefer you use a brush and roller. I do. This is especially important on interior walls if you want good coverage.” Painting isn’t Rainwater’s only specialty. He offers drywall repair and finishing, wallpaper stripping and hanging, as well as commercial lot striping. He also hangs doors and installs windows and ceramic tile. Rainwater will also paint and stain fences. “I start out spraying but then use a brush to make sure I get more of the material on the fence,” he adds. “It’ll last longer.” His road to a painting career began when he was a youngster helping his dad in the summers or when school was out for other reasons. “Dad would say, ‘Come on, you’re going to work.’” Since he graduated from high school, Rainwater has had a paintbrush in his hand. “I started when I was 17 years old, right out of school.”

On the path to becoming a professional painter, Rainwater worked as project manager for a commercial paint contractor doing jobs for the University of Missouri and government offices in Jefferson City, Missouri. Residential work is his preference, though. “I treat my customers the way I would want to be treated,” he says. “When you hire me, you get me. I don’t have a crew. I work by myself.” Rainwater’s work ethic has earned him a good reputation – not just in Owasso. Word-of-mouth referrals have led to jobs in Wagoner, Hulbert, Bristow, Oologah, Bixby and Pryor. Because he believes in doing a job right the first time, his philosophy is, “If it doesn’t need to be painted, I’m not going to paint it.” According to Rainwater, too many things are painted over the years that didn’t need it in the first place. For example, some people will paint weather stripping on garage doors or on door sweeps. “They just didn’t want to mask it off before painting. It takes a few extra minutes to do that but it looks nicer. Eventually, those things, like weather stripping, will only peel because they were not made to be painted.” For a free quote, which includes the materials, give Steve a call at (918) 706-9810. FFour Reasons to Go Mobile Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Jocelyn Wood It’s late at night; you’re in bed relaxing with a book on your iPad and your significant other leans over and says, “Oh, I put gas in my truck today – is there enough money in our account to pay for it?” You smile, bookmark the page and reply, “Let’s check,” as you pull up your bank’s mobile app. You log in and view your account balance and recent transactions. You can also transfer money between accounts, pay bills and deposit checks into your account – without ever having to get out of bed. No matter what time of day it is, mobile banking provides you freedom to bank anytime, anywhere, according to RCB Bank employees and mobile banking app users Connie Maberry and Brenda Romesburg, who share four reasons they “absolutely love mobile banking.” • It’s fast and convenient. “Anytime I need to

make a transfer or check my balance, I use my app,” said Romesburg. “It is easier and faster than logging into a computer and the best part is that I can even make deposits from my phone and I think that is just awesome.” “We are lake people,” said Maberry. “I have used my iPhone at the lake to deposit checks that my husband has brought. Or he will call and ask me to transfer money into his account. To me being able to transfer money from one account to the other is probably my most favorite!” • It saves time and money. “One time at the store I swiped my debit card and the cashier said that it didn’t go through so I had to do it again, but I just had a feeling I had been charged twice,” Romesburg said. “I immediately got on my phone and logged into my RCB Bank app to check the transaction, and sure enough I got charged twice. Before leaving the store I

went to customer service and took care of the mistake right away without having to wait the whole weekend for my refund.” • I stress less. “I have four kids so for me it takes a lot to get everyone ready to just make a trip to the bank,” Romesburg said. “I just love my app because it frees up my time to do other things and I no longer stress over how I’m going to get to the bank.” “When I forget about a bill that is due in two days, I just grab my phone and have a payment set up in a matter of minutes,” said Maberry. “It’s done and I don’t have to worry about it. I love this app!” • It’s easy to use. “RCB Bank’s app is very easy to navigate,” Romesburg said. “Because I use the app myself, I am familiar with it and I’m happy to walk customers through it and be available if they have questions after they leave.”

Connie Maberry loves the ability to take care of her banking when and where she wants.

Download the RCB Bank’s free mobile banking app from the Amazon Appstore or iTunes. Easy installation guides are available online at www.RCBbank.com, under Personal/Mobile Deposit. For more information about mobile banking, call 855-BANK-RCB or visit your local RCB Bank to speak with one of our friendly bankers.

LLighten Your Load Lite Load Concrete, LLC offers smaller loads of concrete for contractors and homeowners. By Christopher Davis

When it comes to concrete, many homeowners and contractors face a recurring challenge – most concrete companies require minimum load orders, and often these requirements are much larger than what is needed. That’s where Lite Load Concrete, LLC comes into play. Lite Load is a family owned and operated company. Owner Dana Huntley opened the business in February of this

year, after his friend Darren McElhaney came to him with the idea to start a company that offers smaller loads of concrete. Darren has an extensive background in the concrete industry and works as a salesman at Lite Load. Kyle Huntley, Dana’s son, is an employee of Lite Load, and his wife, Vicki, operates the business office. “There are a lot of contractors and homeowners that

don’t need six or eight yards of concrete for projects,” Dana points out. Minimum load requirements put many in a difficult situation. At that point, you either eat the cost of unused concrete, or you start considering mixing the concrete yourself. Neither choice is acceptable for a lot of people. A Redi Mix company, Lite Load provides the same high-quality concrete that

(L to R): Kyle Huntley; Dana Huntley, owner, Lite Load Concrete; and Darren McElhaney.

larger companies provide, just on a smaller scale. The key to their success is in the size of their concrete trucks, which carry two yard batches. Smaller batches and smaller trucks mean more flexibility for projects – and, most importantly, no minimum orders. They can maneuver their trucks to easily fit just about anywhere a standard truck can park. Additionally, they offer services seven days a week. Orders can usually be delivered the same day – even on Sunday. Because all team members have worked as contractors previously, they are especially in tune with the needs of contractors. “For contractors, time is money. We know this. We strive to help contractors meet their project timelines,” says Dana. Landscapers, plumbers and contractors will all find a willing and helpful partner with Lite Load Concrete. The company can provide plenty of information and options to suit any project. Darren adds, “We offer more than 300 colors, and this helps contractors provide exactly what their clients want.” Whether the project is a

simple countertop, driveway, foundation or something more involved, they provide exactly what you need, and where and when you need it. Lite Load can also provide information and advice for customers of all skill and knowledge levels, from seasoned contractor to the rookie do-it-yourselfer. Whether you’re a professional in need of a quick batch in that hard-toreach spot, or a homeowner considering an extreme makeover for your home, Lite Load Concrete wants to make your project a success. Conveniently located in Tulsa, off I-244, Lite Load can help you meet your timeline, budget and vision. PPaint Any Surface with No Prep Vintique Charm locations in Claremore and Owasso offer the popular Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.

By Susan Erler

Sheila Giannelli knows how to face a challenge head on and come out on top. The owner of Vintique Charm, located at 321 W. Will Rogers Blvd., spent her early years living in Claremore before getting married and becoming an Air Force wife and mother of three. The life of an active duty family involves many moves, and some of them are to remote locations, like Alaska. Sheila lived at the base there while her husband deployed to Afghanistan. Nearing the end of his military career, she received word that her father was battling brain cancer. Knowing that she wanted to be close to her parents while they took on this challenge, she moved back to her hometown of Claremore. After a brave battle, her father succumbed to the disease, but Sheila decided to stay put. “Claremore is such a great place to raise a family,” she explains. “Everything you need is right here.” After her husband accepted a job as a government contractor, he ended up back on familiar ground – Afghanistan. With a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Sheila made the decision that

it was the perfect time to open her own business. “I have always been involved in businesses of some type,” she says. “I liked the freedom that I found by being an independent business owner in multi-level companies. It gave me the ability to be able to move my business with me wherever we ended up.” This initial experience led her to become involved with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®, and eventually, the doors of Vintique Charm opened. The Claremore store will celebrate its first anniversary on September 7. “This has been a really crazy, fun and cool ride for me,” laughs Sheila. “Nothing having to do with this has been planned. Everything, including opening my second location in Owasso, has just fallen into place. Everyone has embraced this concept and loves what the stores have to offer.” The stores take a familiar “booth” concept, but with a unique twist that customers find inviting. Walking through the store, it is impossible to know where one vendor’s area stops and the next begins. This is due in part to the fact that Sheila handpicks each of her renters,

so everything sold complements the other items. “I know my customers well enough to know if they are attracted to one type of product, then I know other items they are likely to purchase as well.” Another distinction of Vintique Charm is that 90 percent of the items sold in the store are “Made in the USA.” As a former military wife and proud American, Sheila believes in supporting American companies. Even the majority of her boutique clothing items are made in Oklahoma or in the USA. Of course the main focus is the Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint® line of paint, developed over 20 years ago. This unique product is especially popular because it allows users to paint on just about any surface with no prep work. Painting on metal, concrete, terracotta, walls, floors and even kitchen cabinets is a breeze using this paint. Classes are offered at both locations so customers can see all the fun possibilities Chalk Paint® has to offer. Seeing really is believing, and you will be amazed at all the amazing projects you can create using this product.

Sheila Giannelli, owner, Vintique Charm, shows the variety of Chalk Paint® available.

Both Vintique Charm locations offer similar products, and all must meet Sheila’s high standard of excellence. “I just love that I am living the American dream. I love that I get to involve my three children into what I do every day, and I love being able to meet people and provide them with fun, quality products. Every day gets better and better and I like just sitting back and watching it happen. It’s been a great experience!”

Vintique Charm is located at 321 W Will Rogers Blvd. in Claremore and at 117 S. Main in Owasso. Hours for both locations are: Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and closed Sunday and Monday. For more information, contact

FFit to Teach Zumba after Knee Surgery Jennifer Coffey instructs Zumba classes at Tulsa’s Meltdown Fitness, a year after her total knee replacement surgery performed by Dr. LaButti. By Sheryl Sowell

Jennifer Coffey is a certified fitness instructor in Tulsa who is passionate about helping her clients become fit, healthy and happy. Jennifer has worked in the fitness industry for ten years, but four years ago she began experiencing knee pain that started to derail not only her career but her entire life. “I was in so much pain that I started missing work. Some days I couldn’t do my full fitness routine or work with my clients simply because the pain was so intense.” Jennifer “went through the whole rigmarole of options” for treating her knee pain, including injections, medications, physical therapy and even surgery. Then last year, while she was working with a client, she mentioned her chronic knee pain. The client referred her to Dr. Ronald S. LaButti, a board certified orthopedic surgeon widely known as "The Hip and Knee Doc." “I called his office and got an immediate appointment,” says Jennifer. “Dr. LaButti is friendly, straightforward and honest. listen to all of my concerns, answer my questions, and genuinely wanted me to get back to work and my active lifestyle.” Jennifer also appreciated that Dr. LaButti was initially conservative with her treatments; however, he eventually recommended total knee replacement surgery as the only remaining option. Dr. LaButti performed the total knee replacement on Jennifer’s left knee in August of 2012. Now only a short year later, she is totally pain-free and thrilled to be living her life filled with enthusiasm, movement and helping others. One of Jennifer’s favorite activities she was forced to give up due to her knee pain was gardening. She was still in recovery during this year’s planting time, but by next season, she plans to be fully back in “ninja form” and creating a beautiful garden. She is also excited to be teaching Zumba classes at the brand-new Meltdown Fitness, located next to the Campbell Hotel at 2648 E. 11th St. in Tulsa. The studio opens at the

beginning of September and will offer a variety of fitness classes. In addition to leading Zumba participants to shimmy, shake and sashay their way to fitness, Jennifer will be instructing other classes in the future, such as body sculpting. To find out more, search “Meltdown Fitness Tulsa” on Facebook. Jennifer is happy and grateful to be living her passion for fitness again and would highly recommend Dr. LaButti to anyone suffering from knee pain. “Dr. LaButti is wonderful and healed my knee completely. I like that he is accessible to his patients – he’ll answer emails and you can contact him on Facebook. His staff is amazing and very friendly as well.” For more information about Dr. LaButti, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. For more information, contact

Rise of the Blue Phoenix Jiang began his restaurant career 11 years ago in New York when he was working for someone else. Eventually, he decided to go out on his own so he could offer more of the traditional Chinese food. Opening in Owasso seven years ago, the restaurant is not only known for its good food, but also for its family-friendly atmosphere, offering a wide variety of food to please even the fussiest of eaters. For only $7.50 per person, lunch diners can enjoy the Blue Phoenix buffet and sushi bars, six days a week – Monday through Saturday – from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. “It’s an all-youcan-eat buffet for that price,” he says. Diners can also take advantage of the grilled chicken, shrimp, beef, crab meat and grilled vegetables available at the Hibachi bar, which is included in

the lunch price. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. each day, diners can enjoy a dinner buffet for an all-you-can-eat meal for $12.95. “This price includes our seafood buffet,” he says. “We offer crab legs, crawfish, frog legs, oysters on the half-shell, clams, shrimp, grilled salmon, catfish and calamari.” Fourteen different sushi rolls are also offered, including rolls made from shrimp, crab, eel, salmon and various veggies such as avocado and cucumber. “We have been told by our customers that we have the best seafood buffet variety in the Tulsa area,” says Jiang. “Our crab legs are high quality and larger than what most restaurants offer. We want our customers to see the difference.” The dinner buffet, which is

offered seven days a week, is available until 10 p.m. “It is available all day Sunday,” he says. “For the price of $12.95, you not only get the seafood buffet and 14 different choices of sushi, but we also offer the regular food bars and the Hibachi bar. That’s a great deal for an all-you-can-eat buffet.” In addition to the buffet, Blue Phoenix also offers a menu, including to-go food. From appetizers like egg rolls and crab rangoon to soups, fried rice, lo mein, vegetables and a variety of entrees, including shrimp, beef and chicken, you can order in or take it home. It’s your choice. The buffet menu is also available for take-out. For those who want to host a party and provide Chinese food, Blue Phoenix has three party trays available. A $25 tray includes fried rice, lo mein

and vegetables. For $30, you can order a tray to include any of the available chicken or beef dishes. Any shrimp dishes are included in the $35 party tray. One tray will feed four people, according to Jiang. Whether you dine in, order takeout or purchase a party tray, the owners of the Blue Phoenix Buffet & Sushi want you to enjoy your food and experience their culture.

Free Financial Classes for All “Money is easy to understand,” says Rainwater. “Unfortunately, it just isn’t taught to most of us.” Rainwater had an advantage that many people don't have. "My father started teaching me how to manage money when I was five years old. I do financial advising because I love it." Rainwater has what you might consider a calling - her passion is for financial education in addition to money management. Led by her calling, Rainwater offers a myriad of financial services, including basic and advanced investment classes offered free to the public. These classes

help people of all ages set goals for their future, and establish real-life ways to achieve these goals. Classes start for children as young as ten. Parents schedule classes at their convenience to ensure that the proper time and attention can be given to each child. Of course children are not the only people encouraged to seek an education; Rainwater offers basic investment classes to adults as well. She also offers 401K checkups, total investment reviews, personal financial plans, social security seminars, Medicare overviews, and advanced financial education – all at no cost. Giveaways, door prizes, tasty and mouthwatering fall treats and tempting sangrias all add up to one incredible night out. “Our Fall Open House is where we unveil our Halloween décor and this year, our selection tops everything we have ever done. Vintage decorations have become extremely popular so we will showcase an assort-

Cathy has worked at Surceé for nine years, starting out at their 86th Street North location and then transitioning to the new store. SSave the Date for “The Event” of the Year The Event on September 19 and 20 will celebrate 75 years of Oklahoma’s favorite son and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum.

By Carol Beck-Round

Mark your calendar for September 19 and 20. You don’t want to miss “The Event” of the year with two exciting evenings to celebrate Will Rogers, Oklahoma’s favorite son, and the 75th

Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. The celebration, a fundraiser, will kick off in Claremore with the Will Rogers Memorial Foundation

Preparing for "The Event" are (L to R): Steve Turnbo, Will Rogers Memorial Commissioner; Linda Bradshaw, The Event Chair; and Phil Albert, Vice President, Will Rogers Memorial Foundation Board.

hosting an evening event to highlight Will and the Museum as well as the presentation of “The Award,” honoring the early pioneers and founders of the Memorial Museum in a video presentation. “There are so many people who deserve recognition for their efforts in establishing and keeping the Memorial going for 75 years,” says Linda Bradshaw, a Will Rogers Memorial Roper (docent) and event chairperson. “Our goal is to build support locally, regionally and nationally to enhance Museum programming and provide capital improvements.” Although the Memorial is state funded, “the building is aging and we, as citizens, have to do our part in raising funds to preserve the building and keep Will’s legacy alive.” This is the first major fundraiser for the Will Rogers Memorial Foundation. “We must work together to make sure future generations are introduced to Will Rogers. He was a man of his times, a beloved man all over the world, and he brought a conversation of decency to the table.” Former Oklahoma Governors George Nigh and

Frank Keating are honorary co-chairs and will be part of Friday evening’s activities along with entertainment provided by Wild West entertainer Kowboy Kal Cook of Apache, and World Champion Roper Doug Smith of Medway, Ohio, as well as Will Rogers Museum’s Andy Hogan, a Will Rogers interpreter and Museum historical guide. The Tulsa Playboys and the First Lady of country fiddle, Jana Jae, will provide musical entertainment. Judge Robert Henry, president of Oklahoma City University, will be keynote speaker. Henry, a Will Rogers scholar, is also known for quoting Will in his public appearances. A silent auction at “The Event” will include the following items: a trip for two to California, Will Rogers State Historic Park and afterhours tour with Jennifer Rogers-Etcheverry (greatgranddaughter of Will Rogers); lunch for eight with Will Rogers’ great-niece Doris “Coke” Meyer at Belvidere Mansion; 2014 Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In take off and landing in vintage aircraft; Mike Wimmer print, framed and autographed: “Will on Top of the World”; and more.

To secure tickets or become an event sponsor, go to www.willrogers.com and click on “The Event,” or call (918) 341-0719 or (800) 324-9455. Tickets start at $125. Presenting sponsor is the Cherokee Nation. The celebration will continue on Friday night at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa with country music artists Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon Jennings, and Jessi Colter, wife of Waylon Jennings. The Red Dirt Rangers, an Oklahoma band popular across the Midwest for the past 25 years, will join them. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 8. Advance tickets are $20 and $22 the day of the concert. The cost is $24 at the door. Purchases can be made at Cain’s Ballroom, 423 N. Main, Tulsa or their website: www.cainsballroom.com. The concert is made possible through The David J. Chernicky Trust with all proceeds from ticket sales going to the Foundation. For more information, contact

RRogers County Fair Celebrating 99th Year Oklahoma native Wade Hayes will headline the 2013 Rogers County Fair. By Carol Beck-Round

A fireworks show will kick off the opening night of the 99th annual Rogers County Fair on Thursday, September 12 at 9 p.m. According to Lisa Rogers, marketing coordinator, the show will be visible for miles. “We will be setting them off on the hill behind Claremore Expo,” says Lisa. Since 1914, heading to the fair means concerts, carnival rides, midway games, fair food, livestock shows and a host of other family-friendly activities. Fair-goers won’t be disappointed this year as a variety of entertainment is on tap for September 12-15, both inside and outside the Claremore Expo Center at 400 Veterans Pkwy. Admission is free. Oklahoma native and country music artist Wade Hayes will perform on Saturday night on the “2 Works for You” main stage located outside the Expo Center. Claremore native James Muns will open the show for Hayes, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free. “We’re very excited to have Wade Hayes performing back in his home state,” says Lisa. The carnival, provided by

be on site, where fair-goers can experience the milking parlor. “It’s great for kids,” she says, “because it is not only educational but fun for them to see how the milking is done and where it goes.” Of course, no fair is complete without the 4-H, FFA and open exhibits. The Expo Hall will be open Thursday through Saturday for attendees to visit the various displays, including arts and crafts, insects, fabrics and fashions, horticulture, photography, wildlife and other categories. Entries in each division will be awarded ribbons and cash prizes. Expo Hall vendors will also have a variety of accessories and homemade goodies available. “We have a Kettle Korn vendor, handmade jewelry and other unique handmade items,” says Lisa. The Expo will be open Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Livestock exhibitions will also kick off on Thursday with the goat show followed by the sheep division. Livestock shows will continue on Friday with the poultry

Fun Time Shows in Missouri, will open Thursday and Friday nights, on Saturday from 1 to 10 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Wristbands can be purchased each night or tickets can be bought separately. “Last year, the wristbands were $20 per night,” she says. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday and throughout the event, Justin Harrell will be hosting a goat roping for all ages. The popular event includes practice sessions and a jackpot, which will be held outside by the Expo barns. “You don’t have to be an experienced roper,” says Lisa. “The roping is on foot and open to anyone who wants to give it a try. It’s a lot of fun and a popular event.” Saws will be buzzing and sawdust flying as chainsaw carvers – new to the fair this year – will be on hand to demonstrate their unique art. Tom and Wendy Zimmer will be demonstrating their craft on Friday and Saturday. “They make some really cool stuff,” says Lisa, “including eagles and bears as well as rustic furniture.” The Southwest Dairy Farmers mobile classroom will
