McDonald’s in Owasso will hold Candlelight Dinners October 10 and 24.

From carpal tunnel to sports medicine, Dr. Lawson at Central States Orthopedics is committed to helping you get healthy.

By Christopher Davis

McDonald’s in Owasso extends a special invitation to join them for a unique Candlelight Dinner on October 10 (76th Street) and October 24 (Hwy. 20 and Hwy. 169) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Anyone who has visited a McDonald’s in Owasso knows there is something special about the locations at 76th Street and 116th Street (and I’m not talking about the secret sauce). These are not your average McDonald’s restaurants; they are markedly a step above the rest. They are always sparkling clean. The staff is genuinely friendly and, though they never seem rushed, the service is fast. If you are a regular at either of these stores, it is likely you know

the common denominator that pushes these stores to exceed all expectations of what McDonald’s can be. Without a doubt, what drives these two McDonald’s stores to become such stellar examples of America’s favorite fast food chain is the owner, Tim Rich. Anyone who has met Mr. Rich for even a few minutes could talk on and on of his endless enthusiasm and positive attitude. In short, know that he has been in the McDonald’s business for decades, working from the register all the way up the corporate ladder before moving on to open his own franchise stores. And, just as his two stores lead the way with a little special something, his willingness to try something new

Many locals are discovering the perks of Owasso that are frequently popping up – great shopping, full service hospitals and colleges increasingly

It can feel comfortable when you’re in the midst of a herd – but it can lead to places where, as an investor, you don’t want to go. The urge to run with the herd, or follow the crowd, may have been hard-wired into our psyches, according to anthropologists. In prehistoric times, running with the pack may have helped people minimize danger or increase their changes for finding food. But today, there are far fewer rewards for following a herd mentality – especially in investing. For example, consider what happens when the financial markets (continued on page 30)

THE GREED MONSTER IS BACK! BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

I always tell my clients to be aware of the two beasts that run the markets. Their names are FEAR and GREED. Well right now, the GREED MONSTER is back in full force. The greed monster is more sneaky and difficult to identify than its counterpart FEAR. A person that is fearful can typically identify that they are afraid. The typical response to fear is either “fight or flight.” Clients will tell me, “I’m afraid! I want out!” Greed, on the other hand, is much more shrewd. I see competent, intelligent, and adept people being swept up by the skillful cunning of the greed monster. I believe that greed is a more clever and sly adversary because it plays on one’s ego, one’s self-pride, the part of one’s psyche that feels that it deserves more! It plays on the part of the mind that feels it’s smarter, and can play the market better than the next guy. The greed monster sounds very similar to the Monday morning quarterback who wants to question every trade with the gift of hindsight. Common statements that I hear from someone afflicted by the greed monster include: “The market is at all time highs. I should be too!” “I want 20% returns!” It is understandable that people naturally always want to beat the indexes. We do too. However, the market has taught us

all over and over that what goes up…also comes down! If you have a good defense (i.e.: protecting you from the downside of the market), your offense doesn’t have to take as much risk because it’s not trying to make up for the 40% loss from the last time. What matters is the results year over year and the score at the end of the game. The market is at all time highs! Mark my words…what goes up, also comes down. The market does not move in only one direction! Folks have to remember that the stock market requires that you think in a counter-intuitive way. Most people feel better and safer in the market when it is high. When the market is low, folks feel worse and think the market is a bad place to be. Don’t get caught up in the euphoria of the market highs. Don’t allow yourself to get hoodwinked into chasing returns

of what did better last month or last year. Be smart. Stay aware. The cure for both fear and greed is to have a solid strategy that you stick with through the market cycles. Getting squeamish midway through a market cycle and changing your strategy is a sure way to achieve negative results. If you don’t really have a strategy or are working with someone that you are not sure has one either, give us a call. We can help. OOver 40 Years of Success

Lucas Metal Works provides a full line of high-quality metal products and services, from agricultural equipment to roofing materials.

By Christopher Davis

Lucas Metal Works uses highquality steel to produce building and roofing materials, agricultural equipment and custom welding. Customers can rest easy knowing they are investing in steel or aluminum products that will look good, stand the test of time and, most importantly, save energy, time and money. In 1968, Raymond Lucas started up a small custom metal works shop, and it was not long before Lucas’s big ideas outgrew his humble workshop. Driven by the demand for quality and efficiency in design, Lucas filled niches in several industries and saw business boom over the decades. What began as a one-room workshop now stands as a sprawling facility that employs a small army of metal experts. Nestled amongst the farms and ranches of Ochelata, just outside Tulsa, Lucas Metal Works continues to lead the way with several divisions of products and services offered throughout the Midwest. As homeowners and business leaders look for ways to increase durability, save money and become more

energy-efficient, Lucas Metal Works offers a solution with their expansive line of metal roofs. Metal panel roofs not only look sleek and last much longer than standard roofs, but save money and energy as well. “We use 26 gauge metal panels and provide 16 colors to choose from, and back our materials by offering a 40 year warranty,” explains Tammy Laakso, marketing and sales manager. In this age of increasing energy costs and decreasing resources, installing a metal roof is a sound investment. Lucas Metal Works provides a full line of components for industrial, agricultural, commercial and home structures. Because everything is manufactured at their facility, they are able to offer affordable, innovative designs and options to suit virtually any need, from that add-on workshop in the backyard to commercial structures, like storage facilities or warehouses. The Groundhog Arena Tool – designed in 1996 by Raymond Lucas (founder of Lucas Metal Works) – is popular at rodeos and similar

environments, and is considered the signature product of Lucas Metal Works. A father and grandfather of barrel racers, Mr. Lucas saw a need for one tool that could efficiently groom dirt surfaces for arenas. Lucas designed and manufactured the Ground Hog. This unique tool breaks up the dirt and levels it out, providing a better, safer dirt surface for horses and racers. Lucas’s Ground Hog replaced a timely and labor-intensive process that required multiple tools. An extensive list of associations and events use the Ground Hog, including the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and the Better Barrel Races World Finals in Oklahoma City. “The original unit, built over 17 years ago, is still in use today in the Lucas family arena,” boasts Laakso. In addition to the Ground Hog, Lucas Metal Works manufactures a broad range of farming and agricultural equipment and services. This line features the same high quality craftsmanship and durability that made the Ground Hog

famous, and includes tools like hay spears, bale unrollers, bucket grapples, pallet forks and disc-mower caddies. Custom welding services are also offered. HHonesty Still the Best Policy At Owasso Auto Care, the main objective is to earn your trust. By Duane Blankenship

Tim Miller became the owner of Owasso Auto Care in 2012. “I had an opportunity to buy the business and wanted to provide Owasso and surrounding areas something different from the big stores in our area,” said Tim. He moved to Owasso with family in 1974 and is now raising his own kids here, and he is totally invested in the Owasso community. Tim retired from the military in 2002 after serving his country for 20 years in 26 countries, including in Central and South America. After serving all over the world, Tim calls Owasso home. He says that originally, he needed the military to help him get money to attend college. After serving five years active duty, he joined the Reserves and served in Desert Storm, Bosnia and Kosovo and received training at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS) at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He was later assigned to an

A-Team, a squad of U.S. Army Special Forces troops now called ODAs (Operation Detachment Alphas). “The Special Forces are the ‘silent professionals’ who take a lot of pride in doing their secretive jobs well,” says Tim. Tim believes his Special Forces training gives him the drive and ability to do whatever needs doing. “I still don’t let anyone try to tell me that I can’t do something,” he says. Tim says he always had an interest in auto mechanics. When given the opportunity to purchase Owasso Auto Care, it seemed like the natural thing to do. “We provide all services for virtually any type of vehicle including older cars and hot rods,” said Tim. “We’ve grown from one mechanic to three in the short time we’ve been serving Owasso.” His auto specialists include veterans Mike Figart, David Figart and Billy Green, who represent a total of 60 years

in auto mechanics and are well-known in the community. Some of the shop’s specialties include engine, transmission, front end, electrical, and brake service, oil and filter changes and more. They do just about everything except for paint and collision repair, and they offer a one-year/12,000 mile warranty on parts and services. Tim enjoys explaining to customers how to check the fluid levels in their cars and even do some of the light maintenance repairs. This is a service he offers free of charge to anyone interested in learning more about their vehicle and how to care for it to improve its life and performance. The team at Owasso Auto Care wants to be known as a friendly shop that provides accurate diagnostic services, at a fair price, delivered in a reasonable time to their customers. “Honesty has always been the best policy for me,” says Tim. “That’s

NNo Need to Shell Out Big Bucks for Fun Go nuts with excitement for the whole family at The Nut House’s annual Pecan and Fun Fest October 19-20.

By Christopher Davis

The 5th annual Pecan and Fun Fest will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 20 from noon to 5 p.m. What better way to celebrate fall than amongst the turning leaves and pecan trees just outside Claremore along Route 66? Set a reminder, mark your calendar and prepare for a fun weekend of entertainment, food, sweets and shopping. Back in 2006, Hazel Ward went along with her husband and some friends to attend an estate sale at the roadside property of The Nut House, which had run into some trouble over the years. After a somewhat fruitless afternoon, Hazel and her friend decided to leave their husbands to their own devices and do some shopping in town. Much to Hazel’s surprise, she received a phone call from a friend congratulating her on becoming the new owner of The Nut House. Her husband and his friend had purchased the building without consulting her! Mrs. Ward laughs it off, noting her husband is known for antics that would ordinarily drive a spouse “nutty.”

Hazel’s ability to laugh and can-do spirit found her in the position of taking a historical retail outlet and building it into what it is today. The Nut House sells a variety of pecans from all over the country, as well as from their backyard. Additionally, they sell a variety of gifts and snacks, and offer a deli, a dining hall and an

overwhelming selection of sweets, ranging from homemade fudge to chocolate covered nuts. The décor is welcoming, warm and exudes the sort of Oklahoma Route 66 hospitality that continues to attract visitors from all over the world. If you have yet to visit, the perfect opportunity presents itself in October as

the annual Pecan and Fun Fest celebrates its fifth consecutive year. Vendors from all over Green Country will showcase their wares alongside local artists and businesses. Food and drink will be abundant indoors and out. Live music from popular bands from across the region will provide entertainment both days.

There will be plenty of activities for the family, including face painting, pumpkin painting and inflatables. This year, a Battle of the Bands is planned. Vendors and businesses just now discovering this fun opportunity will be pleased to know it is not too late to sign up for a booth. Booth rentals are $125 for indoor spots and $75 for an outdoor location. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this event that routinely draws thousands of attendees from all over. The Pecan and Fun Fest is a growing event that combines a touch of Route 66 nostalgia, great food and loads of fun for the family. For more information, vendor application forms and more, visit The Nut House online at www.66nuts.com or find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/66nuts. For more information, contact

AArrr You Ready for a Show, Matey? Owasso Community Theatre Company presents “Jolly Roger and the Pirate Queen” October 24-26. By Kim Thornhill

Make plans to get swept away for a timeless adventure with Owasso Community Theatre Company’s production of “Jolly Roger and the Pirate Queen” by Craig Sodaro. The all-children cast is sure to get

you hooked with this humorous twist on a familiar tale of pirates at the Mary Glass Performing Arts Center in Owasso October 24-26. “Jolly Roger is a funny script that offers many great

characters for both male and female actors," said OCTC board member Chris Larson. This is OCTC’s 9th season to offer fun, familyfriendly, live entertainment in Owasso. Larson and Heidi Rae are co-producers for Jolly Roger. “Heidi and I both have children involved in theatre, and we love working together to make the ‘magic’ of a live show come together,” said Larson. OCTC is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Productions are funded by donations and revenue from sponsors, advertisers, and ticket sales. “Being a sponsor of OCTC is a great way for local businesses to give back to the Owasso community,” said Rae. OCTC has limited resources for costumes, props and stage design. But Stephanie Townsend, costume designer, doesn’t see the resources as limited at all. “My mom taught me that our resources are wherever we look for them,” said Townsend. “That could be in our own closets, a donation box of clothing that a family has outgrown, or clearance fabric from the craft store.

We are blessed no matter where our resources come from.” Townsend has used some clothing pieces from past OCTC productions and she’s been creative with the costumes. “The kids bring their personalities to the wardrobe room and the stage. We’re going to have an amazing production all the way around.” “I love how lighthearted the script is, and the dialogue is simply funny,” said Jennifer Milam, director of Jolly Roger. “I enjoy the poems that Smudge and Dandy, two of the show’s characters, recite.” Volunteers are important for the show’s success, both on and off the stage. Even though the show is only a few weeks away, OCTC is always looking for new volunteers to help with hair and makeup, set building, tickets sales, show flyer distribution, and more. If you’d like to help, go to www.octok.org for more information. Shows will be at the Mary Glass Performing Arts Center, located at 12901 E. 86th St. N. in Owasso (adjacent to Owasso High

School), on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m.; Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, October 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Advanced tickets can be purchased online, with PayPal as the payment method, at www.octok.org for $8 each. Tickets at the door will be $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (age 55+) and students. Children ages 5 and under are free. The entire cast isn’t on stage for every scene, so the OCTC board members decided the cast could do something special to give back when they aren’t practicing. Cast members are making cards for distribution to children fighting cancer. These cards will be distributed by the Oklahoma chapter of Emmy’s Heart, an organization that makes crowns, capes, tutus, and masks for children fighting cancer. For more information, contact

FFight the Bite, Net a Village, Save Lives Kairos 10 aims to wipe out malaria with your help. By Stephanie Reed

Kairos 10, a nonprofit organization dedicated to wiping out malaria in Ghana, has enjoyed great success in protecting over 72,000 people from this vicious disease through the distribution of mosquito nets. Founded by Phyllis Morris and Katheryn Pennington in 2010, Kairos 10 purchases Ghanaian beads made from recycled glass, vinyl records, bones, and brass from local merchants, and pays native women to make jewelry. The jewelry is then

sold in the United States, and the proceeds are used to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets. This organization, with the help of 60 volunteers across the United States, has been more successful than the founders ever imagined. “We thought initially we would be lucky to sell 300 bracelets, but the demand was incredible, and we have been able to reach so many people in need,” Katheryn explains. Dependent on volunteers for

sales and outreach, Katheryn was floored when longtime friend and fellow volunteer, Julie Ryker, told Katheryn that her daughter’s fifth grade class at Jenks West Intermediate wanted to join in the fight. These volunteers had lofty goals: they wanted to donate 75 nets. The funds for these net were to be raised primarily through T-shirts featuring their theme, “Fight the Bite,” jewelry sales, soccer ball decorating and donating, and asking for donations. Over the course of several months, 120 Jenks students were able to raise the funds for 760 mosquito nets. The students were astounded at their success. A fire was lit in their hearts, and many had never experienced this joy of giving. This fire burned so brightly that students were moved to go on and collect 500 pairs of flip flops to help stop the spread of intestinal parasites. These acts of charity not only benefited the families in Ghana, but the students at Jenks West Intermediate were also exposed to cultural differences and conversations. These acts of charity helped to cultivate generous and well-

rounded youth in Oklahoma. In January, Julie Ryker travelled to Ghana and distributed the nets to those in need, and they decided to dedicate a fresh water well in honor of the Jenks West Intermediate students. Pictures were taken, videos were shared, and soccer balls were distributed to Ghanaian youth. “Volunteerism is such a powerful thing,” says Julie. “Katheryn’s passion just spills over. It has impacted my entire family, and because of her passion, my children have a much more global view. They want to understand,

help, and love cultures that differ from our own.” This is precisely the wisdom that Kairos 10 hopes to share. We can all get involved, and we can all make a difference. FFall Fun for Everyone The Meadowcreek Fall Festival and Arts & Craft Vendor Fair is scheduled for Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

By Susan Erler

There is just something about fall that encourages outdoor activities and a desire to get back to basics. Pumpkin patches, bake sales, mazes, and scarecrow building all signal the return to cooler temperatures and the fun of trick or treating right around the corner. Fall festivals abound during the month of October, each promising “something for everyone.” Meadowcreek United Methodist Church, located at 14205 E. 146th St N. in Collinsville, hosts an annual fall festival that delivers on the promise that everyone will have a great time. The Meadowcreek Fall Festival and Arts & Craft Vendor Fair will be Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Event Chair Carolyn Stewart is excited about all that they have to offer this year. “The response has been overwhelming,” says Carolyn. “This is our third year to hold this community-wide event and the word is getting out! People now make plans weeks

in advance to attend our festival. It just keeps growing each year.” Held in conjunction with the church’s Pumpkin Patch, the day will be filled with activities and entertainment. Inflatables are always a huge draw and this year, they will have an incredible maze for children of all ages to enjoy. “There is a small fee to enjoy the maze,” explains Carolyn. “This is because we do not use hay or cornstalks for the maze. We found that there are a lot of children with allergies and they simply could not participate. Our church decided to use PVC pipe – and lots of it – to create our maze. It is a little more costly, but definitely worth the effort.” Live entertainment throughout the day keeps the atmosphere upbeat and festive. Just a few of those appearing include Jim Igarta, Larry Lang's Singing for Jesus Ministries, a gospel-singing "Elvis," The New Tulsans, The Faith Trio, and Fergie Bear.

The Fall Festival committee has been busy recruiting only the best for their booth spaces at the Arts & Craft Vendor Fair. Over 20 crafters and vendors will be there to offer great ideas for early Christmas shopping, or if you just want to indulge yourself. A huge bake sale will be happening too, and a concession offering hot dogs, hamburgers and more will ensure no one leaves the festival hungry. Volunteers from Ward Wiseman Animal Shelter will be on hand with a variety of animals, all needing a loving home. Please stop by and see if one of these furry friends is meant to become a permanent part of your family. For groups and individuals with a creative flare, a scarecrow building contest is something new this year. Those wishing to participate will need to go to the church website, www.meadowcreekumc.org, in order to download a registration form. They may then drop their scarecrow off to the church the day before

Kids will enjoy face painting and many other activities at Meadowcreek’s annual Fall Festival.

the event for judging. Carolyn says she is thrilled with the outpouring of support from the The committee has asked for donations for gift baskets for the festival. No purchase is necessary, and all attendees just need to register to enter. Area merchants have generously provided goods and services for the baskets, so be sure to register! The winner does not need to be present at the time of the drawing, which will be held in the afternoon. Pastor Brian Mangan explains that offering fun, family activities to the community at no cost is just

one way that his church gives back. “Our Fall Festival takes a lot of volunteer hours from our congregation, but we know it is worth it. To us, it is a way to reach out and say ‘thank you’ to local families and to encourage a sense of community spirit.”

JJohn Deere and a Whole Lot Mower P&K Equipment, an authorized John Deere equipment dealer, sets the industry bar at its highest level.

By Duane Blankenship

P&K Equipment was formed in 1985. Company owner is Dr. Barry Pollard of Pollard Farms. Dr. Pollard is also a leading neurosurgeon known around the country for his skills and expertise. Currently, there are 19 P&K Equipment stores in Oklahoma and Iowa. The P&K Owasso location has been on East 66th Street North since February of 2009. It is a showplace for shopping and purchasing John Deere implements and equipment plus several other complementary brands. This store operates under the supervision and direction of Site Manager Randal Bobbitt. As soon as you drive onto the Owasso P&K Equipment property, you are struck by its size and cleanliness, as well as the amount of product inventory neatly displayed throughout the lot. Walk inside the store and the feeling continues. The employees are professional, polite, and immediately available to answer questions and assist you. Some of the equipment you’ll see includes

lawnmowers and other lawn care products, John Deere Gators, tractors, rakes, combines, balers and mower conditioners. You'll also find chainsaws, trimmers and Commercial Worksite Products. “Whether you’re a farmer, rancher, or homeowner, we’ve got a complete lineup of products to fit your needs,” said Bobbitt. The store also carries a huge inventory of John Deere toys and apparel for

children and adults. Bobbitt’s management team includes Service Manager Eric Gier, Ag Shop Foreman Fred Peters, Parts Manager Dennis Kastner, and Lawn & Garden Service Foreman Chris Scarpa. “Our great inventory of products and parts is complemented by our outstanding support staff,” said Bobbitt. “We have 35 outstanding employees, and I consider their hiring to be one of my greatest

achievements. Each individual contributes to the professionalism and success of our operation.” The P&K service department is staffed by master certified technicians who must complete a minimum of 16 hours training per year through John Deere. The store also has Stihl certified technicians who service all hand-held Stihl products. “We consider our techs to be some of the

best in the business and each is highly skilled, knowledgeable, and professional in performing their jobs,” added Bobbitt. P&K believes that business is all about the people, both the employees and their customers. Randal Bobbitt says he tells his employees nearly every day, “Customer satisfaction – not just customer service – is the real name of the game.” When a customer completes a transaction at P&K Equipment in Owasso, he wants them to leave thinking that they can’t wait to come back to the store again. “We have a great P&K team and we will keep trying to differentiate ourselves from everyone else,” he adds. “We are passionate about what we do and how we satisfy our customers.”

day, 365 days per year,” explains Chad. “We are all busy nowadays, and we want to make sure there is no excuse available to put off going to the gym.” The facility is 9,000 square feet of top-notch cardio and strength equipment, and features tanning beds, saunas and separate men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers. The vibe is focused, positive and free of judgment and harassment. Chad and Tara lead by example. The couple exudes positivity, and it is obvious their mood is contagious. Everyone is smiling as they walk in to work out and when they leave. A common issue many people encounter when searching for a gym is that of feeling judged, or, for some, the tendency to feel as though others are looking for a date. Indeed, one regular customer was beaming with praise for the Gerstmeyers’ facility, commenting that her boyfriend used to have concerns about her working out at other gyms, but they have had no problems at Optimal Fitness. "As a female, I have never been bothered here. Everyone is focused on doing their own thing.” That’s not to say that folks have tunnel

Prices on supplements are not only competitive, but usually beat Internet prices. With on-site consultation available, there is no reason to look elsewhere for your supplement purchases. This is the sort of environment that everybody benefits from as they explore their own path to a healthier body and lifestyle. An added bonus is the ever-expanding selection of nutritional supplements sold in-house at Optimal Fitness. “I study every line of products we sell,” explains Chad. "I have studied products for several months before putting them on the shelf." This conscientious approach is in line with the underlying philosophy of Optimal Fitness. Staff is concerned with assisting clients in figuring out what works best for each person – because everybody is different, and everyone has different goals. There is always someone available to discuss details of supplements. Chad is quick to note, “Supplements are exactly that – supplements. They are designed to provide only what you need or do not get enough of through healthy eating.” The owner takes

Located at 8243 N. HHips Hurt No More Dolores Qualls of Pryor recommends orthopedic surgeon Dr. LaButti after two successful hip replacements. By Joshua Danker-Dake

Dolores Qualls, of Pryor, Oklahoma, has had total hip replacement surgeries for both hips with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. “I was having great pain in the upper area of my left leg and hip,” Dolores says. “It got to the point that walking had become difficult. The pain kept me awake at night. I’m over 65 and diabetic, so these sorts of

issues weren’t entirely unexpected, but the pain was not manageable at all.” Dolores had her left hip replaced by Dr. LaButti in December of 2010. In May of this year, she went back to have her right knee replaced. “I had a good experience,” she says. “I found the staff to be professional, efficient, and genuinely interested in my

situation. My recovery went well. Dr. LaButti prescribed enough care afterward to ensure my complete recovery: I had at-home nursing care and physical therapy, and I also had several weeks of physical therapy in a local facility. After having both hips replaced, I now walk without a limp, and I’m painfree. Dr. LaButti has restored my quality of life, and I’m extremely happy.” Dolores has referred a number of patients to Dr. LaButti, she says, and their surgeries were also successful. She works for the USDA as the county executive director for Craig, Ottawa and Delaware Counties. She enjoys vacationing and spending time with her large family, and she is active in her church, North Elliot Church of God in Pryor. Dr. LaButti, a boardcertified orthopedic surgeon, has served thousands of satisfied patients. Dr. LaButti

is fellowship trained in lower extremity and joint reconstruction, and offers a complete range of nonsurgical knee and hip treatments, with surgery as a last resort. These options include exercise and physical therapy, guidance for rest and self-care, at-home pain relief, personalized joint care treatment plans, and nutritional supplements. If surgery does prove necessary, Dr. LaButti offers a wide selection of joint procedures, including partial and total joint replacements, traditional open procedures, and

minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures. “Dr. LaButti has given my life back to me,” Dolores says. “I was in a great deal of pain for a long time; now I’m fully functional, with no pain. I wholeheartedly recommend him.”

LLearning Disabilities Fall Conference The Learning Disabilities Association of Oklahoma's fall conference, "Bullying and Its Impact on Students with Disabilities: Identification, Prevention and Invervention," will be held November 1, 2013.

By Deanna Rebro

Bullying is not good, by any means. But bullying kids with learning disabilities can cause life-long negative repercussions. The subject is so serious that the Learning Disabilities Association of Oklahoma (LDAO) selected "Bullying and Its Impact on Students with Disabilities: Identification, Prevention and Intervention" as the topic for its annual fall conference on Friday, November 1. Linda Modenbach, president of the state organization and board

member of the national affiliate, Learning Disabilities of America (LDA), believes this is one of the most important issues the group has ever presented. “Every student must feel safe and secure in order to do his or her best and reach their full potential,” she explains. But the student with learning disabilities faces additional challenges that are intensified when bullied. Results of a study published in “Pediatrics” indicates, “Ramifications include lower

Linda Mondenbach, president, LDAO.

academic achievement and aspirations, higher truancy, feelings of alienation in school and poor relationships with peers.” Conference attendees can expect to walk away with a clear definition of what is, and is not, bullying. They’ll learn ways to prevent it, what to do when it happens and how to best handle the problem so that the victimized child feels empowered to deal with the situation. Keynote speaker is Connie Parr, past president of LDA and a pediatric nurse practitioner in Aurora, Illinois. LDA is the largest non-profit volunteer organization that serves as an advocate for people with learning disabilities. It has more than 200 state and local affiliates in 42 states and Puerto Rico. The work of LDA teaches parents and children how to structure their lives so that they can best cope with each child’s individual struggles. And they, indeed, are individual. The wide scope of learning disabilities includes everything from children

having difficulty communicating to those with a high intelligence and high anxiety level that, when controlled, can result in high achievement as well. Conference presenters include legal representatives who will be on hand to answer questions and provide clarification on key points of federally-mandated antibullying programs in schools. Numerous break-out sessions will address issues more completely, including ageappropriate topics for dealing with students from pre-school through high school. “The focus is on intervention strategies, with examples of research-based techniques that have been successful,” says Linda. Early identification of bullying and cooperative intervention among parents and school officials can get the student the help he or she needs to become a responsible, productive citizen. The retired Jenks educator explains that the sophistication of modern electronics equipment and relative ease of use among young people make cyber

bullying a major concern that will also be covered in the conference. Uploading embarrassing and unflattering photographs is a favorite pastime among cyber bullies. This malicious behavior can be seriously hurtful to anyone, but to those with learning disabilities the effects can be devastating. Oldschool thinking would call for parents to say, “Just ignore it.” But ignoring the problem does not work. “Bullying calls for immediate reporting,” says Linda, “and immediate resolution.” The LDAO annual fall conference will be held on Friday, November 1 at the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Learning Center. Educators, school administrators, concerned professionals, parents and students are urged to attend. For more information, contact

Plot Your October Schedule at Tulsa Garden Center Lectures, sales and events for all ages will fill the month at Tulsa Garden Center.

By Sheryl Sowell

The Tulsa Garden Center has many wonderful events coming up in the month of October! The annual Fall Sale of African Violets and other gesneriads will be held Saturday, October 5. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no admission fee to attend this sale. Repotting workshops will be held from 10:30 am to noon. Potting supplies as well as plants will be offered for sale. For more information, please contact John Carter at JohnTCarter@valornet.com or (918) 355-8020. The Tulsa Garden Center, in cooperation with co-sponsors City of Tulsa Park Department, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, Tulsa Community College and Up With Trees, will present “Tree Care After the Storm” on Wednesday, October 9 at 6:30 p.m. This is an updated version of the very popular seminar that was held last year to help Tulsans cope with the tree damage that our urban forest sustained. The seminar will focus on three points: better management practices to enable trees to resist the damage harsh winters and sum-

mers inflict; how to properly diagnose and assess a tree’s health; and recommendations for the best trees for a variety of locations. A three gallon replacement tree will be offered by Up With Trees and can be picked up at the seminar. There is no charge to attend; however, space is limited so reservations are recommended. The Garden Center’s Book Discussion Club will meet on Tuesday, October 15 at noon to review the book “Decking the Halls” by Linda Allen. Join Sandy Cox, Tulsa Garden Center librarian, as she reviews this book just in time for holiday decorating. Many of our seasonal traditions and customs have been borrowed from ancient cultures and practices that existed before the birth of Jesus, making modern day Christmas a truly multicultural celebration that unites all mankind in a cosmic celebration. This lecture is free to the public. The Garden Center will present “Growing a Cook’s Garden” on Tuesday, October 15, at 6:30 p.m. No matter what your motivation for growing your own vegetables,

there is no argument that they are more flavorful and more healthful. Being able to walk out your kitchen door and harvest the vegetables you’re serving that night, or the herbs you need to flavor your favorite dishes, certainly is preferable to going to the big box store and buying produce that was picked weeks ago. Melinda McMillan, garden manager for Philbrook Museum, will share her secrets for urban gardening. Ms. McMillan has integrated vegetables and herbs into the more traditional flower beds of Philbrook very successfully. A kitchen garden doesn’t have to be hidden behind hedges and fences. Cost is $12 per person or $10 if Tulsa Garden Center member. Registration is required. The Brown Bag Lecture “Plants of an Oklahoma Autumn” will be presented on Thursday, October 17 at noon. Sue Amstutz, Liaison of Oklahoma Native Plant Society to the Tulsa Garden Center, will present a slide presentation on the variety of fall blooming plants, vines, berried and fruited plants and autumn foliage which can be found in Oklahoma. This lec-

There is no admission fee and reservations aren’t required. Topics that will be covered in the stories are Pumpkins and Gourds, Night Creatures, Fall Colors and the Moon and Stars. Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas, and parents are welcome and encouraged to accompany their children to this event. The Fall Bonsai Show & Sale will be held at the barn in the Linnaeus Teaching Garden on October 19 and 20. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. There is no admission fee to attend this show and sale. Bonsai demonstrations will be given on both days, throughout the day. The bonsai on display are owned by members of Green Country Bonsai Society and have been created and maintained by the individual members. A limited number of Bonsai trees will be offered for sale. For more information, please visit www.greencountrybonsai.org. The Hosta Connection announces a presentation on Creating a Shade Garden on

He has written frequently for newspapers, gardening websites and magazines and has delivered numerous speeches to gardening, educational and horticulture groups. He is currently an emeritus professor and the Director of Operations for the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, Arkansas. ZZombies Invade Halloween Festival A new addition to the Castle of Muskogee’s Halloween Festival has attendees “shooting” zombies in the Dark Castle.

By John Owen

The Castle of Muskogee's Halloween Festival features events from not scary to very scary.

Expect something different at the 2013 Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee. Eleven great Halloween events, one incredible location: 3400 West Fern Mountain Road in Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 60-acre Halloween theme park. You’ll find thrills for the entire family, both inside and outside the Castle, located a short 35 minute drive from Tulsa on the Muskogee Turnpike. As the brave among you enter the 10,000-square-foot Dark Castle, you will be issued an infrared assault weapon that fires special “zombie bullets” to protect yourself and kill zombies while you search for survivors of the raging zombie wars inside. For you other courageous souls, try a walk through the woods along the Trail of Blood where the lost souls of those who have gone before will guide you; the Torture Chamber shows what really happened in medieval times in the depths of the dungeons; Casa Morte is a

labyrinth through the 12th Century Castle with doom and mystery around every corner; Domus Horrificus takes you to the areas where your favorite horror monsters dwell; the Ultimate Maze where most of you will find your way. For those of you with faint heart, there is always the Haunted Hayride, a trip that is sure to keep you on your toes as you ride through the Halloween Festival grounds; the Enchanted Boardwalk is your chance to stroll on the boardwalk filled with Halloween inflatables; experience live entertainment on the Chessboard Stage with the Magic of Matthew VanZee and the Raks al Hassana Mummy Dancers. For the little ones 8 years of age and under, the Halloween Festival hosts Halloween Land – an old school carnival of kid-friendly games, face painting, and prizes with absolutely no scares! Plus, there is a fantastic Pumpkin Patch. The Halloween Village, with free

admission, is the place where everyone experiences the very best of Halloween ghost stories, dancing to great music under the DJ tent, hot and cold food and drinks, games and bounce houses. Parking and admission to the Halloween Village is free. Tickets must be purchased for events and the prices range from $2 to $15. Advance tickets may be purchased online. Go to www.okcastle.com to check out ticket prices, combo packages and specials. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Halloween Festival will be held October 4-5, 1112, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Halloween Land open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.). For more information, contact

Owasso Can Hardly Wheat for Harvest Festival The annual community-wide event for local families is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

By Susan Erler

Outdoor activities and the cool, fall weather go hand in hand. Add into the mixture fun family events, including great entertainment, food, crafts, and adorable, furry animals, and you have the annual Owasso Harvest Festival. This is the 9th year for this community-wide celebration, to be held Saturday, October 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rayola Park, located at 8300 N. Owasso Expy. next to the YMCA and

off Highway 169. Event coordinator April Dean says that it just keeps getting bigger and better. “Each year we add a new twist, making it even more fun and exciting for all who attend. Keeping things fresh, interesting and new is why people keep coming back.” Inflatables for the children guarantee a good time for the young guests, and craft vendors are always a big hit with moms and others wishing to get a jump on

Christmas shopping. The list of items and businesses that will be at the festival is growing every day. For the most up-to-date listing, check out the City of Owasso website and click on the Harvest Festival link. Older children will be thrilled to find out that a laser tag course is going to be at the festival again, and at no charge. The whole family will enjoy a number of tasty food trucks on hand including Andolini’s and Open Table. Live entertainment throughout the day on the event stage is sure to add a festive atmosphere, and the first-ever Owasso Sings contest will showcase Owasso’s finest vocal performers, maybe even the next “American Idol” winner. “We are really excited to host a family-friendly and mostly free day for Owasso residents,” states April. “Being able to bring families together is important to us, and this is just one way to accomplish that.” Probably the cutest part of the festival is the annual Barktoberfest hosted by the Owasso Animal Shelter. “Barktoberfest is a community

event to support the Owasso Animal Shelter and to celebrate ‘Adopt a Shelter Dog Month,’” explains Brandon Hemsoth. “Shelter staff and members of the community plan the event, which offers an opportunity to meet your animal control officers and also learn how the current pet overpopulation affects the entire community.” Barktoberfest has a wide array of vendors who attend, allowing local pet owners the chance to see a large group of organizations, products, and area veterinarians all gathered in one location. Merchandise and discount services designed to promote healthy and safe pets include low cost micro-chipping, nail trimming, vaccinations and much more. “We are very excited at the outpouring of support we receive each year. Just a few of the organizations that have already signed up to be a part of our event include: Pawsitively Pets Pet Care, SAHO, Therapetics Service Dogs of Oklahoma, CAARE, Inc., Companion Dog School of Tulsa, Washington County

SPCA, Blow! Twist! Pop!, Spikes Place, Dog Training with Brenda, Bring Your Own Dog Pet Grooming and Boarding, Family Animal Medicine, K9 Officers Sordo and Benny, K9 Officers Avery and Asko, and Southern Agriculture.” “Probably one of the best parts of this event is the number of shelter animals that get adopted that day,” adds Brandon. “It is great to see all the animal rescues and local shelters that bring their pets out to our event. It is heartwarming to see these animals become a part of a family. This is the main reason we host the event, and it makes all the hard work worth it!” Be sure to keep watching the local City website (go to www.cityofowasso.com and click the "City Events" link) or like the Facebook pages for Owasso Harvest Festival and Barktoberfest for current information. It is a great day of food, fun and family, and a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors. You won’t want to miss the excitement! If you are interested in becoming a vendor or sponsor, or have any questions regarding the festival, please call April Dean at (918) 3761504. The festival offers several sponsorship levels and is in need of gift card donations. For more information, contact

Oktoberfest Brings Tradition TTulsa and New Experiences Organizers promise German authenticity for patrons of all ages and interests. By Stacey Roggendorff

“Oktoberfest is a timehonored tradition for Tulsans and visitors alike,” says Festival Director Tonja Carrigg. “Oktoberfest offers entertainment, activities, and plenty of food and specialty beverages for everyone. It’s no surprise upwards of 60,000 people flock to Tulsa’s favorite Chicken Dance venue.” Live music is always a favorite and this year, several bands are traveling to Oktoberfest from Germany, including Kasplattnrocker,

allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $15 wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $5 and $10 or patrons can ride the free shuttles which run two routes through downtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas.

Tulsa’s largest fall festival turns 35 this year. Set for October 17-20, Tulsa Oktoberfest is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers a long weekend of authentic German celebration, including live music, carnival; rides, games and of course, food and drinks, among numerous other attractions. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn pass is available online,

Known for their modern take on traditional Bavarian music, Kasplattnrocker has been touring Europe for the better part of a decade.

Penny’s Oktoberfest Projekt and Celle Fire Blaskapelle. Keeping with German tradition, numerous beer tents will feature a variety of great beer for all tastes. A total of 42 domestic and import beers will be available, including premium brands such as Warsteiner, Paulaner, Konig and Hofbrau. Beer tents include Der Biergarten, Der Bierkeller, Das Esszelt and Die Bierstube. Das Fassler Hall Stammtisch Zelt will feature brews from Tulsa’s Marshall’s Brewing Company, including a special recipe made exclusively for Tulsa’s Oktoberfest. Wine, mixed drinks and nonalcoholic beverages also will be served. A new commemorative beer stein will be offered for the first time this year. Called the Masskrug, this one-litre (33.8 fluid ounce) stein is designed to closely resemble the mug frequently used in Bavarian beer gardens and beer halls and is a staple of the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. In addition to drink options, Oktoberfest will offer more than a dozen different food vendors. Many local restaurants will be on site with a wide variety of menu choices for all tastes. Some highlights include

Seigi’s sausage plate dinner, bratwurst pizza and Lanjaeger (German beef jerky). Ludger’s Weiner Schnitzel sandwich, apple strudel and Bavarian cheesecake will be available for purchase. The kids tent, Das Jugendzelt, will offer a variety of entertainment for children each day, including magic shows, circus skills presentations, live music, a science show and more. Authentic and Germaninspired games are fun to play and watch. The Dachshund Dash is a race featuring “wiener dogs.” The McNellie’s Bier Barrel Race allows teams of six to compete for the fastest keg roll. The Masskrugstemmen, otherwise known as the Strong Stein, is an endurance competition where contestants hold full mugs of beer at arm’s length until there is a winner. The International Artisan Market is a comfortable area to shop and relax. While exploring the many booths, patrons can enjoy coffee and pastries sold by Foolish Things Coffee Company. Light Up Your Evening will certainly add to the unique reputation he and his crew have earned. Turning the paradigm of fast food on its head, these sister stores will encourage guests to slow down and enjoy themselves a little more than usual. Guests who dine in are welcome to sit down at a table all dressed up for the occasion. Candles and flowers, set out on tablecloths, will transform the

room. Staff will greet you at the table with a menu and take your order. When your order is ready – don’t get up! Enjoy yourself as a server brings your order to your table. The menu and prices are all that will remain the same for the evening. Each month will have a theme for the Candlelight Dinners. In October, there will be a Western theme. Servers will dress up as cowboys and

continued from page 1 cowgirls. Customers are encouraged to dress up for the occasion as well (though it is not required). In fact, there will be costume contests for everyone and a chance to win prizes. The fun will not end there, though. There will be music, a coloring contest for kids and much more. Candlelight Dinners are planned for once per month at each store, so keep an eye out for updates on future themes. The first we be held

from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the 76th Street store on October 10 and at the Highway 20 store on October 24. The drive-thru will remain open as usual, and guests inside will still have the option of ordering their food to go, if they wish. But, why would you want to leave? Candlelight Dinners promise a good time for guests and staff alike. And, in case you did not hear the news, the McRib is back – just in time for

Bringing Big City Credentials to the Community of community that attracts so many families. Central States Orthopedics adds to this list of reasons to avoid driving to Tulsa, offering a full line of orthopedic services and resources in a convenient location just off the Owasso Expressway next to Urgent Care of Green Country. Bradley Lawson, M.D., brings commitment and passion for healing to Owasso. “I like to see people get better,” explains Dr. Lawson. “It is fulfilling to see patients get back to daily living and everyday activities, especially when some don’t realize they could be living without the pain they’ve experienced for, sometimes, years.” With board certification for both sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Dr. Lawson is a welcome addition to the community. Dr. Lawson runs the satel-

lite office for Central States Orthopedics in Owasso. This network of orthopedic specialists, based in Tulsa, provides all the benefits and resources of larger networks, without sacrificing the individual attention and quality that a small practice is best at. From nonsurgical treatment options including prescribing medications and physical therapy, injections, splinting, casting, and bracing, to surgical treatment including carpal tunnel, fracture fixation, arthroscopic surgery, ligament repair and reconstruction, and joint replacement, Dr. Lawson can provide the quality care and medicine needed without the hassle of commuting to Tulsa. His office is open Monday through Friday in Owasso, so appointments are convenient if you live in Owasso, Collinsville, Claremore, Skiatook, Oologah, Bartlesville, or other towns in

northeast Oklahoma. They guarantee a new patient appointment in 48 hours. If an injury calls for a more involved surgery, Dr. Lawson conducts surgeries at Bailey Medical Center (Owasso), Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (located at 81st and Lewis), and St. Francis Hospital South (located at 91st and Hwy 169). Dr. Lawson takes emergency room call at Bailey Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital South. So, if you find yourself with an injury at one of these hospitals, be sure to ask for Dr. Bradley Lawson to be your orthopedic doctor. A patient is able to choose the doctor they want for their care. With a family that includes four children, Dr. Lawson understands the importance of community involvement. This is his second season with the Collinsville Cardinals, as Dr.

go through a period of volatility. Virtually every time this happens, many investors flock to gold, apparently believing that the shiny yellow metal will always be valuable and that its price will never drop. Yet, the fact is that gold prices, like those of other financial assets, do fluctuate. Furthermore, certain types of goldbased investments can be quite risky in their own right. What other “follow the herd” movements should you avoid when you invest? For one thing, try to stay away from “feeding frenzies.” If you look back about 15 years ago, you may remember the buzz surrounding speculative technology stocks – many of

which were companies that had futuristic names but lacked some useful elements, such as profits or business strategies. For a few years, the prices of those companies soared, but in 2000 and 2001, the “dot-com” bubble burst, splattering investors with big losses that were either irreversible or, at the least, took years from which to recover. The herd mentality often applies even when investors know the right moves to make. To illustrate: One of the most basic rules of investing is “buy low, sell high” – and yet many investors do the exact opposite. When prices drop, they sell, so that they can cut their losses – even though they

Lawson volunteers his time as the team doctor for the varsity football team. The sport can be dangerous, and Dr. Lawson makes himself available for immediate treatment of any injuries that occur during the game. “It is important to ensure the athletes are properly examined when there is an injury on the field,” Dr. Lawson says. “Obviously, everyone wants to stay in the game, but if the injury is serious, or the player shows signs of a concussion, a strong personality is needed who can not only assess the situation, but explain whether the injury warrants sitting out or not.” Having grown up playing football and other sports, Dr. Lawson is an ideal team doctor and understands the commitment and passion that drives these players to be the best. Commitment and passion is certainly what has helped shape his path to a respected

On the other hand, when an investment’s price has shot up, these same investors will often keep buying more shares, hoping to reap even bigger gains – even if the investment has now become quite expensive, as measured by the price-to-earnings ratio, and has little upside potential remaining. the evening of October 15, 2013. Spotlighting the concert will be the Swon Brothers, the American country music duo from Muskogee, Oklahoma, who took third place honors on NBC’s “The Voice.” The Swon Brothers have been playing to sold-out crowds across the country since their success on the show. “The Swon Brothers, Zach and Colton, were also previously honored as Rising Star recipients for 2013 by the OMHOF,” said Smith. In addition to a one-hour concert by the Swon Brothers, the evening will also showcase performances from other Oklahoma musical greats including Sandi Patty. The 2013 inductees into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame include Jimmy Webb, Mason Williams, Barbara McAlister, Sandi Parry, Norma Jean, Bob Dunn (posthumous), Neal Schon, Roger Davis (Governor’s Award), The Swon Brothers, and the Mabee Center. “We are delighted to be hosting the Oklahoma Music

Hall of Fame as they honor the great musical talent we have here in Oklahoma,” says Tony Winters, Mabee Center general manager. “The celebration of our 40th year anniversary comes to a close at the end of October, and I cannot think of a better way to end it than by hosting another Oklahoma treasure and honoring these artists.” Since its beginning in 1972, the Mabee Center has been known for attracting top-notch entertainment while maintaining a safe, family-friendly environment. They have hosted some of the biggest names in the world including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Luciano Pavarotti, The Bee Gees, Garth Brooks, Jay Leno, Reba McEntire, Justin Bieber and many, many others. “In honor of our 40th anniversary,” said Smith, “we recently launched the Mabee Center eMuseum, a showcase of the rich history and memories from over the years.” You can now take an

exclusive tour of Mabee Center’s history, the building process, a gallery, and much more. This spectacular historic accounting was assembled and designed by Shawn Bender, graphic design/web coordinator for the Mabee Center. Shawn was assisted by ORU students who spent hundreds of hours perusing the archives. “The project was a major undertaking,” said Smith, “and we are really proud of the final product that enables us to share the spectacular Mabee Center history with others.” Please visit the eMuseum at www.mabeecenter.com. “The induction concert will be an end-arena show with 8,000 expected to attend,” said Smith. When you visit the website you’ll find more event information plus ticket prices, ranging from $10 to $175 for a VIP Package that includes a Studio One Reception prior to the concert. Buy your tickets online or visit the Ticket Office by entering the north doors of Mabee Center. GGuard Your Keepsakes

RCB Bank employee Debbie Jones explains the benefits of having a safe deposit box.

By Jocelyn Wood

Seven years ago, a flood surged through my house, destroying practically everything I owned. As my husband and I were sorting through the mucky mess, we found that our wedding pictures were discolored and damaged, my husband’s baseball card collection was soiled with soot and ultimately ruined, and all of our tax documents past and present were swept away in the rushing current never to be found. For years, I stressed over the thought of a random tax audit. What would I do? I

had no records, no supporting documents. And, my husband was devastated knowing that he had worked so hard and long to build a valuable collection only to see it now worth next to nothing. If only we had protected our valuables in a safe deposit box at the bank. RCB Bank employee Debbie Jones has owned a safe deposit box for many years and highly recommends them to anyone who has important papers, family heirlooms or other items that would be hard pressed to replace.

Protect your valuables in a safe deposit box like the ones seen here. Pictured is Matt Klem.

“It’s a much safer place to store important documents than at your house, in case of a fire, flood or other natural disaster or in case of a burglary,” said Jones. When deciding if a safe deposit box is right for you or what items to store in your box, ask yourself, “If this item was lost, can I easily replace it?” If the answer is no, then consider storing your keepsakes it in a safe deposit box. Common items include: • birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports • loan documents, mortgages, property deeds • life insurance policies, homeowner’s policies, car insurance policies • stock or bond certificates • gemstones, collectables, heirlooms “The list goes on,” Jones said. “I even have the originals of a few one-of-akind photos of my grandparents in there for safekeeping.” When it comes to privacy and security, each safe deposit box takes two keys to access: one is held by the bank staff and the other by the box owner. It takes both keys to open the box.

Theresa Cox, of Skiatook, is the winner of a new 2012 CNG Honda Civic, given away by RCB Bank at its Block Party in September. Theresa, pictured with RCB Bank President and CEO Roger Mosier, waited patiently as nine finalists before her picked a key and tried to unlock the car door. RCB Bank's Car Giveaway Promotion was in celebration of its three new branches that opened in Edmond in June 2013. RCB Bank now offers 33 convenient locations across Oklahoma and Kansas.

Box rentals range from $20 to $75 annually, depending on the size of box.* RCB Bank allows its customers the ability to set up an automatic debit from their bank accounts. Access to safe deposit boxes is usually available during normal business hours. “I just take my key to the vault, sign in and I’m in,” said Jones. “They’re relatively inexpensive, easy to access and it gives me peace of mind to know that I can go to one place and find everything that I need safe and sound.”

Information listed is based on RCB Bank Safe Deposit Box rental prices. Fees, box sizes and payment plans may vary at other financial institutions or safe deposit box providers. Contents of your safe deposit box are NOT insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any government agency. For more information, contact

When Ford engineers carefully design and test a Power Stroke® Diesel engine, the precise filtration of particulates from fuel, lubricants and air intake are of critical importance.
