Sushi Bar Discovers the Perfect Recipe for Success Akira Sushi Bar focuses on giving back to the community and offers customers a unique, fun and delicious dining experience. By Susan Erler Few times in your life a situation presents itself for which there are no words. Try as you might, finding the proper adjectives to describe the experience is disappointing because none seem to properly convey the moment. This is how many diners feel as they walk through the doors to Owasso’s Akira Sushi Bar. Once inside, set aside every preconceived notion you might have about restaurants, and especially ones that specialize in sushi, because it is readily
apparent that your dining experience will exceed your expectations. Each customer is greeted promptly by a friendly hostess who then escorts you to your table, and somehow you just know that any hesitation you may have felt before arriving was simply unfounded. When you begin to gaze over the five page menu, a feeling of uncertainty begins to creep back into your mind. That is, until your server comes over and asks with sincerity, “Do you have any questions about the menu?” You
feel sheepish when asking if there are any items that are not raw fish – you are at sushi bar after all. This is when the difference between most restaurants and Akira is the most evident. The staff will take as long as you need explaining each item, is happy to let you know the differences in preparation and will translate even the most intimidating dishes. The menu is filled with such an extensive variety of items that you can find a traditional (continued on page 22)

By Susan Erler Being a mom at back-to-school time can be so stressful. You want your children to be able to wear high-quality, name brand clothing, but fitting the name brand clothing price tag into your already stretched budget can be challenging. ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
A MAN IS NOT A FINANCIAL PLAN…… YOUR FINANCIAL SUCCESS IS UP TO YOU. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Okay, listen up ladies (and gentlemen). This is a challenge I have watched far too many clients, friends, and family struggle through. It’s time to change our thinking and our expectations.
taxes? Divide up the money tasks and make sure each of you know what the other is doing. 5) Sharpen your financial skills. If you lack financial knowledge, make an effort to master the basics and boost your confidence about money issues. Get a good book about money management. Review your finances together each month. Learn how to manage your money wisely. This will give you a sense of control and security that will help you build a solid future as a couple.
My husband and I have been married for over twenty-five years, and we’ve worked together for almost half of them. But we both know that even the most successful marriages can end, in either death or divorce. That is why a man is not a plan, even in the best of marriages. If you are married, each of you needs the skills to eventually stand on your own. That’s especially true for women, who tend to live longer, earn less, and save less for retirement.

6) Set financial goals and strive each day to work towards them. Having a goal that is written down and that you discuss and dream about often will help keep you focused.
2) Discuss your finances. Failing to discuss financial issues throughout the marriage can jeopardize your security individually and as a couple. Don’t shy away from these discussions because you are afraid you will disagree. You probably will disagree at times. Working through these disagreements, in a healthy way, will make you and your marriage stronger.
Choosing the right partner might bring happiness and all sorts of wonderful things, but it is not a means to financial security later on in life. It’s education, career, and good financial choices that can truly ensure your money plan is your own. Here are a few tips to maintaining financial independence:

Remember, a man is a partner, a help mate, someone to love and cherish, to share your life with. But the odds are that one day you will be financially responsible for yourself again. And that my sweet friends, is why “a man is not a financial plan.”
3) Establish a budget. Sit down and determine what your expenses are and create a budget. Without a budget you will end up spending more than your paycheck. If you are spending more than you make, it will be impossible to achieve your financial goals. Meet each month to review if you are on target.
1) Explore issues surrounding money and power in your relationship. Often money causes an imbalance in power in the relationship if one person makes significantly more income. This can bring about feelings of resentment, anger, insecurity, and powerlessness. Discuss in advance, what role you want money to play in determining each person’s worth in the relationship.

Teach Kids about Money with Hands-On Approach Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Ashley D. Wood It’s never too early to start teaching your children about money, how to earn it, how to save it and how to spend it wisely. You can begin by providing kids with a visual, hands-on money-saving experience. One way for kids of any age to learn about saving money is by setting an example at home, according to Amber Holloway, RCB Bank employee and mother of two boys, ages six and seven, who are learning to save money. “If your children see you saving money, then they are more likely to be excited about saving themselves,” said Holloway of Inola. “At our house, we have a change jar that sits in a central location. Our kids see us adding our spare change and extra dollars to it and watch it grow.” To provide your children with a more personal experience, give them their own piggy banks and let them fill it with the money they receive from birthday gifts, allowances or other reasons, said Holloway. “When my kids’ banks are full or even semi-full, we go through them together and count the money to see how much they have,” she said. “My kids love this part because this is when they get to decide how much they are going to put into their savings
account and how much they are going to spend on a toy or whatever else they may want. It has also helped my kids learn about how money works, because they know they have a certain amount of money to buy things, and if they don’t have enough, then they have to search to find something else in their price range or choose to save their money.” Letting your children actively manage their money will help strengthen their money sense. Take a trip to the bank and, with your help, let your kids open up their own checking or savings accounts like the RCB Bank Kids Club accounts. Only $20 is required to open a Kids Club account and there is no minimum balance necessary. Kids can earn 0.10% APY* with a Kids Club savings account, but they are limited to the number of transfers they can make to their savings accounts each month. Kids Club checking accounts have unlimited transfers but do not earn interest. Kids Club members receive a backpack of goodies when they open their account and a quarterly newsletter with their bank statement that includes money-wise tips, games and other kid-friendly information as well
as a chance for them to enter drawings and win prizes throughout the year. Each time you visit the bank, let your children fill out their own deposit slips and take them to the teller. When their account statements (and yours) arrive, sit down as a family and balance the registers together. “As a child, you benefit from all the fun perks while at the same time learning how to save and manage your money for the present and future,” Holloway said. “As a parent, you benefit by helping your child learn this important step in life.” Make it personal. Get creative. Keep it fun. Teaching kids about money when they’re young will help prepare them to be financially fit adults. Parents can sign up their children in RCB Bank’s Kids Club at any one of its 33 branches across Oklahoma and into Kansas. Find a location nearest you at www.RCBbank.com. For more information about RCB Bank’s Kids Club, call 855-Bank-RCB or visit your local RCB Bank to speak with a New Accounts Representative. *Kids Club Savings Account:* Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is accurate as of July 1, 2013 and may change at any time. SSupport Tulsa Greek Festival and Celebrate in Style “Opa!” – Join Tulsa celebrities for an evening of Greek fare with flair at VIP Night. By Christopher Davis Tonya Van Zandt Boone, chair of VIP Night, invites business and private donors to mark their calendars for Sunday, September 15 for a special night to honor supporters of the 53rd annual Tulsa Greek Festival. VIP Night supports Tulsa Greek Festival, the oldest and longest-running ethnic festival in Tulsa. Hosted by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, the festival is well known as a three-day celebration of all things Greek. Greek cuisine and jewelry, music and dancing, kids’ activities, and more will fill the weekend of September 19-21. The Tulsa Greek Festival is a nonprofit organization that supports a variety of initiatives, partnering with John 3:16, Special Olympics, Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless, Iron Gate Community and many others. This year, 10 percent of the proceeds from VIP Night will also support Camp Agape NW – an organization that provides camp experiences for kids with cancer and their
families. “Camp Agape acknowledges that families sacrifice a great deal, too, and it is important to support everyone during such a difficult time,” explains Tonya, who has been involved with the Tulsa Greek Festival for over 20 years. “I am very pleased to be able to help support such a wonderful project this year, and we are excited that this year’s VIP Night will build on the success of last year.” The 2013 VIP Night promises to be exciting, indeed. Bringing a formal dining experience together with the fun and excitement of a Greek menu, the evening has even more in store for sponsors and donors than last year. Guests will enjoy an evening of Greek music, dancing, drink and food, including saganaki – a fried cheese dish that is flambéed to shouts of “Opa!” Tonya and organizers have been busy with finishing touches and final details, and are excited about some of the surprises in
store this year. An auction will round out the fundraiser, featuring a week in Santa Fe, a trip to hunt elk in New Mexico, and a fly fishing vacation in Montana. And, building upon celebrity appearances at last year’s VIP Night, this year’s event will feature celebrity tables. A limited number of premium seats are available, so guests may reserve a seat to share a table with Tulsa celebrities. This year’s appearances include KTUL’s Kristin Dickerson and former mayor Kathy Taylor, and more are being added as September schedules come into focus. If all of this sounds like a great night out, then hurry to reserve your seats, as organizers do anticipate the event selling out. Amazing Greek food and wine, dancing and song, jubilant cheers of “Opa!” filling the air, opportunities to bid on lavish getaways and more – all while rubbing elbows with Tulsa’s elite and supporting the oldest ethnic festival around – what could be better? There are a variety of

TTurn Back the Hands of Time BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center introduces the "Hand Lift." By Lorrie Ward It is common for people to develop noticeable sun damage on their hands as they age, and
veins and tendons become more apparent as hands lose volume and firmness over the years. If

you're uncomfortable with the way your hands look, BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center offers a solution with the introduction of the "Hand Lift." “Nothing is more telling of a woman’s age than her hands, and they age sooner due to only being protected by a very thin, delicate layer of skin as well as constant sun exposure and other environmental elements,” says Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center. “At BA Med Spa, we have developed a very comprehensive treatment plan that consists of a multi-pronged approach.” The BA Med Spa Hand Lift is for a patient who has sun damage or volume loss or both. According to Dr. James Campbell, "Initially when the patient comes in we will assess the hands and develop a treatment plan that can be done that day or on a second appointment if need be. After the assessment the hands can be numbed topically. Typically the protocol is to start with an IPL (intense pulse light) on the back of the hands to treat hyperpigmentation and any superficial vascularity issues. Next, dermal fillers

their best. Several cosmetic services are offered, including the BA Med Spa Hand Lift, Latisse (for eyelashes), permanent cosmetics, injectables, cosmetic peels, and laser hair removal. The foundation of the center is assisting people in reaching their optimum, healthy weight by helping them change their eating and exercise habits and, if needed, by adding hormone replacement therapy. All procedures are performed by BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center’s highly trained staff and are medically supervised. Staff members include Monica Stubblefield, R.N., and Amy Golden, B.S.N. will be administered by cannula to correct volume loss, and finally, the hands will receive a pixel treatment to stimulate collagen and thicken the skin. The results are excellent and will last for years with regular maintenance every one to two years.” The BA Med Spa Hand Lift is a recent addition to the menu at BA Med Spa, and positive results are already being reported. “I was very embarrassed about the backs of my hands – they appeared to belong to someone much older than me,” one patient relates. “I had no idea I could actually do something about it; even though there are tons of creams and other products, they didn’t help much. It was as if they were too little, too late.” The patient visited BA Med Spa and after her free initial consultation, decided to undergo the BA Med Spa Hand Lift. “I can’t believe how great my hands look now,” she says. “The difference is night and day.” BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is dedicated to helping people look and feel

NNot Just Any Knee Doc Patient Judy Bates raves about her orthopedic surgeon Dr. LaButti, who performed her life-changing knee replacement operation.
By Lorrie Ward When Judy Bates of Chelsea, Okla. had Dr. LaButti perform a replacement on her right knee, she had two main goals – to walk without a limp and to walk up and down stairs normally. “For years, I had to take one stair at a time, and my job requires a lot of walking,” says Judy, who works as a customer service representative at the Cherokee Casino in Ramona. Dr. LaButti was recommended to Judy by co-workers who had gone to the orthopedic surgeon with various problems and had achieved great results. Judy had experienced knee problems for decades, after being in gymnastics in high school and experiencing many injuries, and then a major injury to her knee when she was 16. “I have been on crutches too many times to count,” Judy relates. “I was a hairdresser for 30 years, and I can’t tell you how many times I had to go to work on crutches.” Getting around in recent years had become so difficult for her that she was prescribed medication for the pain. Judy knew she needed surgery but didn’t want to be operated on by the doctor she was seeing at the

After hearing about Dr. LaButti at work, she saw his ad in the newspaper one day. Then the next day, she heard a radio advertisement, as well as read a story about one of his patients. “I figured this was a divine message!” she says with a laugh.
Judy made an appointment with Dr. LaButti and was impressed with his professionalism and attention to details. “He was very honest with me about the procedure and what to expect,” she says. “He told me I would have about six weeks of

pain, by the ninth week I would be glad I did it, and by the twelfth week I would be back to work.” Judy was amazed at the truth of Dr. LaButti’s words and at her recovery. At ten weeks, she and her husband took a trip to North Carolina to see their son and his
family. While they were there, she walked up a three-quarter mile hill in a mountainous area and relates, “My knee did not give me any pain at all.” The group also visited the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, and Judy was able to enjoy every minute of it. “I climbed up and down every ladder they had, from bridge to engine room, all 15 decks,” she recalls. “And then we went in the submarine and did the same thing.” Judy has returned to work in good health, but she feels that with her history of injuries, her other knee will probably eventually have to be replaced as well. She is not worried, however. “I will go straight back to Dr. LaButti when the time comes,” she says. “He is so very knowledgeable – he gives you confidence from the very beginning.”

SStriving to be the Best, Not the Biggest Dynamic Door Service provides quality products and services to the Tulsa area.
By Duane Blankenship
Dynamic Door Service is a small, trustworthy, reliable family-owned company that has been doing business for over 48 years. The company currently has operations in several Arizona communities plus Denver and Colorado Springs. They have recently expanded services to Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Owner and operator Derrick Kidd says the company’s motto has always been, “Striving to be the best, not the biggest.” Dynamic Door Service provides garage door repairs and installation services for garage, entry and commercial doors. They also offer selections of new garage doors and garage door openers. “We pride ourselves on our professional services and our technicians’ abilities to provide, literally, any door service you may need,” says Derrick. “Our technicians are highly trained and knowledgeable and always relate to our customers in a professional manner.” Dynamic Door Service takes pride in their ability to provide same-day service, and you will never see an extra charge for promptness. “Whether working on a
planned project or responding to a customer who has an emergency situation, we hope you will consider calling Dynamic,” said Derrick. In addition to garage door sales and repairs, the company also sells and services commercial doors, store front doors and entry doors for both work and home that will add style, intrigue, and personality to where you live or work. Beautiful new doors can make your home comfortable and add security for you and your family. “We carry entry doors that are attractive, energy efficient, low-maintenance and secure,” says Derrick. Some of the products and services offered by Dynamic Door Service for either home or work include: sliding glass doors, storefront door and glass replacement and repair, tempered glass door repair, laminated glass door repair, commercial glass door repair, and tempered glass door repair. They also carry door hinges, door closure replacements, door closers, door pivots, panic devices, entry door weatherproofing, and commercial door hardware. “Customer trust and satisfaction is our highest
priority, and our products and work are always guaranteed,” says Derrick. “We’re committed to providing the highest quality products and most dependable service for our customers.” Each technician is a certified professional with the necessary experience to ensure prompt and correct completion of any of the services offered by Dynamic Door Service. “We only hire trusted, experienced, fieldtested employees, and each undergoes a strict background check prior to employment. Technicians are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” Dynamic Door Service routinely gets calls for the repair of garage door torsion springs, broken garage door cables, out-of-track doors, broken rollers, bent tracks and more. If you experience any of these problems, Dynamic can quickly have your door operating efficiently. They always provide you with a written estimate of the parts and labor that will be required to make your door functional again. And you can be confident that the door will be fixed the right way the first time. Dynamic Door Service
David and Kalli are always happy to help provide you with the right solutions for your garage and overhead door needs.

different approach to customers by constantly asking for their feedback and getting them involved in each aspect of what we do,” he explains. “We often have contests asking our customers to come up with a new or different combination for a roll, and often our best sellers have come from the minds of our customers.” Even beyond encouraging input on menu items, Quinton and his business partner Huy Huynh seem to have an exceptional grasp on the real key to a successful restaurant. “We are always looking for new ways to thank our community and our customers,” says Quinton. “We

A Not-So-Small Small Animal Hospital While many animal clinics have solid protocol that may not consider the reality facing pets and owners, SAHO strives to offer a range of treatment options whenever possible. Age and condition of pets, budget and urgency of care are all considerations to take into account, and SAHO takes a collaborative approach to animal care to ensure that owners and pets are healthy and happy. SAHO is well equipped to offer a broad spectrum of treatment options. With the latest in technology, including digital radiography and an onsite laboratory, clients can rest assured that all options are on the table for some of the best prices around. Part of the reason this is possible is due to the size of SAHO. Earlier this year, SAHO was created by the merger of two smaller clinics, run by Dr. Strathe, Dr. Spriggs and Dr.
Kelley. This partnership allowed the clinics to combine their resources (monetary, equipment and client base), which empowers the hospital to cut costs in a variety of ways. Additional doctors on staff at SAHO include Dr. Sara Hendricks, Dr. Jessica Metcalf, Dr. Angie Semple and Dr. Kiana Selby. While the common perception tends to be that large facilities cost more, Dr. Kelley explains that, at SAHO, the opposite is true. “‘Economies of scale’ is a phrase we like to use,” he says. “We put everything under one roof, and then we can cut costs and pass that along to our clients.” With less relative overhead and more bargaining power for the purchase of supplies, clients will notice a difference. “Because we purchase in larger quantities, we can offer products like flea and tick medicine at much more affordable
Dollar Tree in the Owasso Market Shopping Center, has been a fixture in the community for 13-and-a-half years. Educating customers on how to make the store “Buy Back” policy work for them is Kari’s passion. “Our buying philosophy is very easy. Customers can bring in two average sized plastic grocery bags full of clothing, books, toys, or a couple pieces of equipment. And we promise to serve them in 20 minutes or less. They will know what dollar amount they can receive from their items and can then decide if they want cash or store credit,” she explains. At that point, the customer can choose store credit and receive an additional 25 percent value for their items, or they can receive cash on the spot. Walk-in buying takes place Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those who

rates than other clinics and popular pet supply stores,” adds Dr. Strathe. Ultimately, this approach will culminate with the opening of a brand-new facility. “We will be breaking ground on the new hospital at the beginning of August,” beams Dr. Spriggs, co-owner. “We own two and a half acres across the street and have been fine-tuning our plans for the past few months.” This new facility will be 20,000 square feet and will offer some unique features that many clients would never dream of finding in Owasso. “We will have separate wards for dogs and cats, so our cat clients will definitely appreciate that,” Dr. Spriggs elaborates. Other amenities include a full-service boarding and “daycare” facility with a pool for dogs and even more play space. In the main building, the doctors are excited about plans for two surgical suites, a radiography suite
and an ultrasound suite. Along with all the state-of-the-art equipment SAHO is already known for, clients can count on even more individualized care options. Dr. Angie Semple, who has a special interest in felines, is anticipating the move as well. With over a decade of experience in treating cats, she is excited for the plans for a separate cat ward. Perhaps most exciting of all is that clients can watch the progress of the new facility, since the site is directly across the street and viewable from the current office’s lobby. Surely, doctors, staff and customers will grow more and more excited as progress is made. “We hope to have the new hospital complete and open by spring next year,” says Dr. Kelley. One can imagine that for such a large animal hospital, the notion of a new facility with plenty of space and all the bells and
Back-to-School Shopping Without Straining Your Budget pregnant, I received a lot of clothing and other baby items which seemed to be outgrown almost before they had a chance to be worn,” Kari laughs. “So, I heard about Children’s Orchard and began bringing in all my items that Shayli had outgrown. They bought them from me and gave me the opportunity to apply the money earned from these items back into a store credit. And they gave me an additional 25 percent credit for doing it that way.” That was all it took. Kari was sold on the concept and thrilled that she didn’t have to spend a big chunk of her family’s budget on children’s clothing. When she found out that the store was available to purchase, she jumped at the opportunity. That was two and a half years ago, and she is thrilled to be able to provide this service to moms and dads everywhere. The store, located next to

have a larger amount of items to sell can simply call ahead and schedule an appointment time. Kari makes it an extremely easy process too. Clothing needs to be brought in pre-laundered and in good condition. She points out that in a typical “buy” from a client, they will not usually accept all of the items they bring in, and if customers know to expect that, there are no surprises. “I have many clients who begin shopping with us when their children are newborns and they continue until their child reaches 10 years of age. Once you learn how to leverage your dollars and be able to find quality clothing at a lower cost than department stores, it is easy to get hooked.” Children’s Orchard also offers some items which are brand new, but still keep with the lower price tag her customers crave. Boutique items such as hair bows,
sunglasses, dance leotards, jewelry and more are all current, hot fashion items but still reasonably priced. August will include many back-to-school sales including all the latest top brands at a fraction of retail prices. Just a few of the brands will be Gap, Gymboree, Justice, Ralph Lauren and more. The first weekend in August will be their big “Jean Event.” As you might have guessed, this is the time to stock up and sell name brand jeans. As an added bonus, that will be Oklahoma’s Tax-Free Weekend, so the savings are even greater. Kari and her staff have so many fun events scheduled in the next few months that the best way to be “in the know” is to sign up to receive emails from the store. “We send out email specials that are specific to our Owasso store only, so we are able to really target

RRopers Share Will’s Passion for Flying The annual Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In will be held Sunday, August 18 at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch.
By Pat Reeder Joe Bacon, Martha Swartz and Tom Egbert are new-found friends with a common bond. They are fans of Will Rogers; all are Will Rogers Memorial Museum Ropers (docents). And they love flying. They are looking ahead to Sunday, August 18, and the Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In. They will land on the 2,000-foot grass strip adjacent to Will’s birthplace home and on the ranch his father settled in the 1800s. The grass strip might sound imposing to some, but to these three it is a good landing. ‘It’s a good grass strip, very smooth,” said Bacon. “It’s so rewarding, landing in the grass.” Egbert, who earned his pilot’s license at 17, said he is a “grass field pilot. I love it. Flying around, I learned to fly off grass.” “Grass is so forgiving,” said Martha, who landed on grass strips often when flying with her late husband. They enjoy the experience of offering spectators the opportunity to look at their planes, fellowship with other pilots and pay tribute to Will and Wiley on the anniversary of their August 15, 1935 death in an Alaska plane crash. Each year on the Sunday nearest August 15, the Fly-In at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch marks the anniversary of Will and Wiley’s death in a 1935 plane crash in Alaska. Will was lured by the possibility of seeing Siberia from the
air and flew to Alaska with Wiley Post, who was intending to explore a trans-Atlanic air route to Russia. Bacon and Will look-alike Lester Lurk of St. Genevieve, Mo., will make a popular return to the Fly-In as Will and Wiley, landing about 10 a.m. Will Rogers Ropers, volunteers at Will Rogers Memorial Museum, share a passion for Will Rogers’ history and the Claremore museum dedicated in his memory. Five of the almost 50 trained docents also share
his love of flying. The three active flying Ropers, introduced to Will and the volunteer program through the Fly-In, will join other pilots for the annual event. Egbert the newest docent of the five, has been at the Fly-In since the event started more than two decades ago. Bacon, from Pryor, has been coming almost as long, and Martha Swartz from the Owasso/Collinsville area, went to a Fly-In about three
Will Rogers and Wiley Post (Pilot Joe Bacon and Will look-alike Lester Lurk) will land on the grass strip adjacent to Will’s birthplace northeast of Oologah on Sunday, August 18, during the annual Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In.

years ago, hoping to volunteer — and was talked into joining the next Roper training class. Nonagenarian Jean McCreery, one of the last trained WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots), is often in the Museum workroom sorting and filing photos. Bob Sperry, who flew with the Army Air Corps, later the Air Force, is a Roper greeting tourists. Egbert and Ron Lessley, another Claremore pilot, have flown the fly-over at Will Rogers Memorial Museum on August 15, the date of Will’s death and the time when a wreath is being placed at the Rogers’ family tomb. The 2012 Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In was a record success in numbers — planes landing and spectators watching. The Fly-In at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch has outgrown the former designated parking space. New parking will be opened up for this year’s event, Sunday, August 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Fly-In has grown from a small number of planes with pilots showcasing their planes and sharing stories with each other and spectators, to an event which last year drew more than 100 planes and several thousand spectators. Visitors can bring their own lawn chair and sit on the grass watching planes land. They are welcomed onto the field for a
close-up of planes and visit with pilots. Additional entertainment on the grounds will be Cherokee Storyteller Robert Lewis, inflatables for children, antique and classic car show, and tours of the 1875 ranch house to see the room where Will was born Nov. 4, 1879, and tours of the era-correct Amish-built barn. Spectators will have an opportunity to vote for Peoples Choice car and plane. Tim Jarrett will return as Fly-In coordinator with Civil Air Patrol helping park planes. Ross Adkins and Tony Isler will be on the microphone identifying planes and pilots as they arrive. Concessions will be available and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum Store will have a booth. Will Rogers Downs Cherokee Nation Business, for the second consecutive year, has joined Will Rogers Memorial Museum and Will Rogers Memorial Foundation as the Fly-in presenting sponsor. NNew Additions to South Pointe The service department at South Pointe Chevrolet continues to grow.
By Duane Blankenship Parts and Service Director Ben Perry recently announced the addition of Service Advisor Rebecca Speck to the South Pointe Chevrolet service team. Rebecca says, “I am now where I belong and where I want to be. I love my job and the people I work with.” Rebecca says she has always enjoyed cars, even as a young girl. Her first car was a Chevy Chevelle. She and members of her family customized it, making
it a high-performance vehicle. “With it came a lot of responsibility,” she said. “Dad made me change my own tires and hoses and keep maintenance records.” Rebecca has been in customer service and in automotive service for the past ten years. “I saw an ad for a service advisor at a used car lot and applied for the job.” She was hired on the spot. “My new boss took a chance with me,” said
Rebecca, “but giving me the opportunity worked out for us both.” South Pointe’s Randy Brooks and Mike Renner serviced the car lot’s vehicles for Rebecca. “They always took time to explain recommended services and taught me a lot.” If you haven’t been to South Pointe Chevrolet for a while, you’ll be surprised at the changes that have been implemented to improve your service experience. Manager Ben Perry has nearly 30

years in the business, mainly with GM products. “It’s great being here at South Pointe Chevrolet and working with such a great service team,” said Ben. Ben’s organizational skills are obvious and he has an inherent dedication to serving customers. After spending just a couple of minutes with him, you realize how much he enjoys people. Ben says his ongoing goal is improving customer retention, with the ultimate aim of “once a customer, always a customer.” “We earn the loyalty of our customers through continued hard work and making sure each realizes that we’re doing our best to put them first,” said Ben. “The only way you can fully appreciate our efforts is to come in and give us a try.” South Pointe’s service technicians have some of the highest ratings in their zone, and Ben is doing his best to ensure that they keep their top rating. “We want customers to understand that there is truly no reason to go anywhere else for products or service,” he emphasized. South Pointe does literally everything for your vehicle. “You can buy tires, batteries, and accessories from us. You can have your vehicle serviced if you’re having a
problem, and you can bring it in for suggested manufacturer maintenance whether you bought your GM vehicle from South Pointe or not. We’ll change your oil, rotate your tires, and even detail your vehicle,” said Ben. South Pointe technicians are highly trained in specific areas of vehicle maintenance and service. These areas of training include heavy-line techs, drivability, suspension and steering, trim and electrical, and heating and air conditioning. Whatever service you might need, South Pointe will have a technician specifically trained and skilled in that area. You’ll find just about anything for your vehicle at South Pointe with the exception of gasoline. “Come in and get acquainted,” said Ben. “We want you to experience the first-class treatment you’ll be given.” When you stop by, be sure to see Ben and ask him about the Manager’s Special.

GGreat Food for a Great Cause
The Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-off brings small-town family fun to the backyard of the Deco District on August 24.
By Christopher Davis The best cooks from all over will descend upon the Deco District and line the streets with grills, steaks and smiles when the fifth annual Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-off takes place on Saturday, August 24 in downtown Tulsa. The nonprofit OCSC aims to become the premier steak cook-off event in America, while promoting and serving the Tulsa area. Attendees are invited to purchase tickets for
a 16-ounce steak dinner, which helps support OCSC and their partner projects. In the past, the OCSC has partnered with organizations such as Iron Gate, New Hope, Rebuilding Together Tulsa and the Tulsa Food Bank. This year, OCSC has partnered with Our Garden Project and the Awesome Pretzel Project. Through their work with Our Garden Project, OCSC has helped establish over 40,000
square feet of community gardens in the Tulsa area, and intends to see even more growth in the future. The Awesome Pretzel Project, an initiative of Guy Fieri’s Cooking With Kids organization, provides culinary and entrepreneurial experience for youths. This broad collaboration has helped OCSC make a positive impact in Tulsa and beyond. With an expected attendance of
A car and motorcycle show at 6th and Cincinnati will accompany the cook-off event.

over 3,500 people, this year’s event will transform the Deco District’s backyard into a familyfriendly cook-off with all the fixings. Throughout the day and evening, the OCSC offers great food and entertainment. Two stages will provide live music, including an evening set from Steve Ham and Jambalaya Jass. A car and motorcycle show will fill the streets surrounding Trinity Episcopal Church (6th and Cincinnati), along with vendors and cook-off contestants. Families can look forward to lots of giant inflatables, as well as the Grillin’ with Kids competition open to young cooks aged 8 to 16. Turn in times for competitors are at 1 p.m. for the first round, and 4 p.m. for the top ten. Food will be prevalent throughout the event, but the main dinner lines open at 5:30 p.m. Winners are announced at 7 p.m., with cash prizes totaling over $6,000, in addition to bragging rights. Contestants travel from all over to compete in the Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-off. “Last year, we had teams from Wyoming, Illinois, Texas and other states,” recalls Tripp Haggard, executive director of OCSC. Many other cook-off competitions are held in small
towns, and a lot of the travelers remark how much fun they have in Tulsa, looking up at the downtown buildings while they grill. The scene is unique for Tulsans as well – it’s not every day the Deco District grills up thousands of steaks in a single afternoon. “If you drive by on the freeway about noon and look over, it’s going to look like something is on fire,” laughs Haggard. “One year, we heard that someone had called 911, thinking there was a fire downtown because of all the smoke from the grills.” Don’t miss out on this opportunity to support great causes while enjoying a fun day of food with your family. The Oklahoma Championship Steak Cook-off runs all day on August 24. Sponsors, volunteers and contestants can register online. A full schedule, registration forms and more information can be found at www.oksteakcookoff.com.
