Over 40 Years Experience in Treating Pain

More Than a Tile Store Tile by Tony – building relationships with customers and going above expectations.

Dr. Joseph Mitchell of Mitchell Chiropractic Clinic offers relief from pain as quickly as possible. By Carol Beck-Round Getting his patients out of pain as quickly as possible has been Dr. Joseph E. Mitchell’s goal

since he began his chiropractic practice over 40 years ago. “If a patient comes in with

pain, then our primary concern is alleviating the pain as quickly as possible,” says Dr. Mitchell. “We want to provide nonsurgical and nonmedical care so the patient has lasting relief and doesn’t require as much or any pain medication.” Dr. Mitchell’s career spans more than four decades, but he is still dedicated to learning more about chiropractic medicine and staying on top of new techniques and the rapidly changing field of healthcare. According to his wife, Beverly, who works in the office with him, “He doesn’t have a (continued on page 24)

By Carol Beck-Round Tony Sementi believes in “under promising and over delivering” to his customers. Maybe that’s why his business, Tile by Tony, has grown into one of the area’s largest kitchen and bath remodeling businesses since opening in 1982. Sementi, whose background began with a three-year construction apprenticeship in Fort Worth, Texas, grew up working with his hands. “My dad was an engineer,” he says, “and I was always building something.” Sementi’s reputation for high-quality work and customer service has earned his business the highest rating at Angie’s List. “I believe it – Angie’s List is a much more honest assessment from customers than other online review sites,” he adds. When Sementi started his business, tile was his mainstay. “There was a niche for tile at the time and for quality work,” he

says. However, within a few years he began to diversify, but the name stuck. Initially after expanding, the business focused on bathroom remodels, moving into kitchen remodeling later. What sets Tile by Tony apart from similar businesses – besides Sementi’s quality work – is the fact that he has 12 employees on staff. “Because I have a plumber, electrician, sheet rocker, painter, carpenter, and a granite and tile crew on staff, we can get in quickly and get the job done,” he adds. “While some remodelers have to line up an electrician or a plumber and then wait for them to show up, I can count on having my crew there when I need them. I can schedule a job in the sequence it needs to be done and get it finished in a timely fashion.” In addition to tile, the (continued on page 24)

A favorite stuffed animal—originating in the Victorian Era—is making a comeback, especially at Country Grannie’s Playhouse in Inola. Carolyn Dormier not only fashions the popular toy from a variety of socks but also loves teaching others how to make the cute button-eyed animals. Memories and nostalgia led Dormier to begin fashioning the monkeys—historically created out of a pair of Rockford Red Heel Socks—from socks of all sizes and patterns. “My mother never wasted anything. She made quilts and taught me to make doll clothes as well as sock monkeys long before I started school,” she says. Dormier’s sock monkeys include Red Hatters, Zumba monkeys, horse and other animal prints, seasonal monkeys as well as striped and polka dotted monkeys. However, some of her (continued on page 24)

Carolyn Dormier displays one of the sports-themed sock monkeys at her shop, Country Grannie’s Playhouse in Inola. The sports-themed monkeys sell out fast, she says. Here she shows a sock monkey made from a Thunder sock. OU sock monkeys are her bestseller.

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

A MAN IS NOT A FINANCIAL PLAN…… YOUR FINANCIAL SUCCESS IS UP TO YOU. Okay, listen up ladies (and gentlemen). This is a challenge I have watched far too many clients, friends, and family struggle through. It’s time to change our thinking and our expectations.

taxes? Divide up the money tasks and make sure each of you know what the other is doing. 5) Sharpen your financial skills. If you lack financial knowledge, make an effort to master the basics and boost your confidence about money issues. Get a good book about money management. Review your finances together each month. Learn how to manage your money wisely. This will give you a sense of control and security that will help you build a solid future as a couple. 6) Set financial goals and strive each day to work towards them. Having a goal that is written down and that you discuss and dream about often will help keep you focused.

2) Discuss your finances. Failing to discuss financial issues throughout the marriage can jeopardize your security individually and as a couple. Don’t shy away from these discussions because you are afraid you will disagree. You probably will disagree at times. Working through these disagreements, in a healthy way, will make you and your marriage stronger.

Choosing the right partner might bring happiness and all sorts of wonderful things, but it is not a means to financial security later on in life. It’s education, career, and good financial choices that can truly ensure your money plan is your own. Here are a few tips to maintaining financial independence:

Remember, a man is a partner, a help mate, someone to love and cherish, to share your life with. But the odds are that one day you will be financially responsible for yourself again. And that my sweet friends, is why “a man is not a financial plan.”

3) Establish a budget. Sit down and determine what your expenses are and create a budget. Without a budget you will end up spending more than your paycheck. If you are spending more than you make, it will be impossible to achieve your financial goals. Meet each month to review if you are on target.

1) Explore issues surrounding money and power in your relationship. Often money causes an imbalance in power in the relationship if one person makes significantly more income. This can bring about feelings of resentment, anger, insecurity, and powerlessness. Discuss in advance, what role you want money to play in determining each person’s worth in the relationship.

BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

My husband and I have been married for over twenty-five years, and we’ve worked together for almost half of them. But we both know that even the most successful marriages can end, in either death or divorce. That is why a man is not a plan, even in the best of marriages. If you are married, each of you needs the skills to eventually stand on your own. That’s especially true for women, who tend to live longer, earn less, and save less for retirement.

Sushi Bar Discovers the Perfect Recipe for Success Akira Sushi Bar focuses on giving back to the community and offers customers a unique, fun and delicious dining experience.

By Susan Erler Few times in your life a situation presents itself for which there are no words. Try as you might, finding the proper adjectives to describe the experience is disappointing because none seem to properly convey the moment. This is how many diners feel as they walk through the doors to Owasso’s Akira Sushi Bar. Once inside, set aside every preconceived notion you might have about restaurants, and especially ones that specialize in sushi, because it is readily apparent that your dining experience will exceed your expectations. Each customer is greeted promptly by a friendly hostess who then escorts you to your table, and somehow you just know that any hesitation you may have felt before arriving was simply unfounded. When you begin to gaze over the five page menu, a feeling of uncertainty begins to creep back into your mind. That is, until your server comes over and asks with sincerity, “Do you have any questions about the menu?” You feel sheepish when asking if

there are any items that are not raw fish – you are at sushi bar after all. This is when the difference between most restaurants and Akira is the most evident. The staff will take as long as you need explaining each item, is happy to let you know the differences in preparation and will translate even the most intimidating dishes. The menu is filled with such an extensive variety of items that you can find a traditional Japanese sushi roll for you and a chicken salad for your spouse. Trying out a new restaurant has never been easier or more customer friendly. Co-owner Quinton Wong speaks with pride about his business. “We take a totally different approach to customers by constantly asking for their feedback and getting them involved in each aspect of what we do,” he explains. “We often have contests asking our customers to come up with a new or different combination for a roll, and often our best sellers have come from the minds of our customers.”

Akira Sushi Bar presented a $5,000 donation to Owasso Rams Football in July. (L to R): Senior Corner Back Tyler Lindsey, Akira Owners Quinton Wong and Huy Huynh, Booster Club President Dugg Holeman, and Senior Free Safety Josh Kinzer. Even beyond encouraging input on menu items, Quinton and his business partner Huy Huynh seem to have an exceptional grasp on the real key to a successful restaurant. “We are always looking for new ways to thank our community and our customers,” says Quinton. “We have contests where they can win tickets to a Broadway musical appearing in Tulsa or for gift certificates for food. And beyond that, we make sure to give back to many of the organizations that are important in this town such as the high school band program

or football teams. We learned a long time ago that when you take care of your community, they will take care of you. For us, this has been our recipe for success.” Akira is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Happy hour is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and is one of their most popular times, boasting half-price appetizers and many drink specials. Keep a lookout for an

expanded wine list and new appetizers added to the menu soon. Don’t let a fear of the unknown keep you from trying Akira Sushi Bar. Once you have experienced true customer care, you won’t want to settle for less.

A Cut Above Elizabeth Jean Salon in Claremore is open for business and ready to serve.

By Cassie Woods As the newest hair salon in town, Elizabeth Jean Salon opened its doors on June 4, with the official ribbon cutting and open house on July 9. Located in the Triumph Towne Centre on the corner of Patti Page and Florence in Claremore, Elizabeth Jean Salon is easily accessible to residents. The name of the new salon is a combination of the middle names of its two co-owners, Kristin Elizabeth Roseberry and Lacey Jean Hendrix, both born and raised in Claremore. Kristin has been doing hair for 11 years, first in Owasso and most recently at another salon in Claremore. Lacey has been in the business for three and a half years. The two met when Lacey became a client of Kristin's in Owasso several years ago. Lacey graduated from Oklahoma State University in May of 2011. She then moved back home to Claremore, and her and Kristin were well on their way to venturing out on a new opportunity. “We always talked about opening a salon together as soon as Lacey went to school,” said Kristin. “It happened a lot faster than we expected, but we are really excited about how well it’s

been received.” “It has been surprising to us to see how busy we have been,” added Lacey. “Even the first day we opened our doors, we were very busy. It really showed us that there is a large, unmet need in this community, and we are excited to help meet that need.” The pair attributes some of their success to their great location and nice building in a high traffic area. The rest of the credit, they say, goes to their clients and families for all of their loyalty and support. “We have amazing clients and our families have been great through this process,” said Kristin. “We truly are blessed to have this opportunity and so thankful for those who have helped us get to where we are, as well as those who will continue to help us grow. One of the best parts about being a business owner in Claremore is meeting new people and having more opportunities to get involved with the community.” The services offered at Elizabeth Jean Salon include haircuts, colors and styles, special occasion styling, blowouts, conditioning treatments, keratin complex smoothing treatments,

Pureology and Redken product lines are also available at the salon. “We would love to someday be able to expand our services to offer our customers more opportunities that they may not currently have access to in Claremore,” said Lacey. “We hope to eventually grow Elizabeth Jean into an upscale, full-service salon offering nail and spa services in addition to the hair and facial waxing services we already offer.” One of their main priorities is to insure that they are educating their employees to

become better stylists. “We really want this to be a teaching salon,” said Kristin. “We hope to educate those young stylists who come through our salon on proper techniques and working conditions, and encourage them to keep up with continuing education and changing trends so that they can better serve the people of the community.” In order to better serve their employees and more efficiently run their salon, Kristin and Lacey will be attending the Redken Summit Business Seminar and Salon Training Program in Tampa, Florida this October.

Elizabeth Jean Salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. Find the salon on Facebook at www.facebook.com/elizabethjeansalon to be the first to learn about new products and upcoming specials.

eliminating toxins, revitalizing skin and increasing mental and physical energy levels. The calcium and other minerals found in the ionized alkaline water support bone health and proper function of the body’s muscles and organs. “I believe the best thing about the Tyent Alkaline Water is how well it hydrates my skin,” said Debby Bailey, owner of Always Crystal Clear and user of Tyent Alkaline Water. “It is so much better than regular water. It also removes all the chloramines from the water, which means it is cleaner and safer than regular tap water.” Alkaline Water is different from bottled water or water filtered through reverse osmosis because many of the minerals the body needs are lost through those filtering processes. Tyent Water filters the water but keeps the nutrients and adds antioxidants. “We use it all the time for everything,” said Bailey. “We have seen weight loss benefits, and my daughter was gluten intolerant before she started using this water. Now she can eat anything and has zero stomach issues.” The machines do more than alkaline, though. They also have a setting for acidic water, which is great for the skin. “We have seen the acidic water clear up hives and skin rashes as well as help clear skin up,” said Bailey. "This machine has three settings for alkaline, which are used on things for inside and outside the body such as drinking, cooking and even removing stains from

By Cassie Woods Water is the most important thing you can put in your body. And healthy water is even more beneficial. Tyent Alkaline Water, available at Always Crystal Clear

just west of Claremore on State Highway 20, offers excellent health and wellness benefits. Alkaline Water has antioxidants that are important

for maintaining a healthy body, reducing the signs of aging and lowering the risk of age-related disease. It also provides better hydrations without bloat,

It also makes fruits and vegetables taste better after soaking." Tyent Alkaline Water is not a direct sales company. It has a solid reputation for quality products available only through select distributors. Always Crystal Clear offers both the water for purchase as well as the machines for personal use in the home. The company offers free water for the first month after purchasing a bottle for $8. For those who wish to have the machine installed in their home, there are three models to choose from, with the most popular priced at $2,495. The machines come with free installation, a 60-day money back guarantee and a lifetime warranty with no limitations. Each filter is built to treat 30,000 gallons of water. Always Crystal Clear also sells other natural products including soaps, lotions and cleaning products, as well as Prill beads that can be used to make your own alkaline water for $19.95.

RRopers Share Will’s Passion for Flying The annual Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In will be held Sunday, August 18 at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch.

By Pat Reeder Joe Bacon, Martha Swartz and Tom Egbert are new-found friends with a common bond. They are fans of Will Rogers; all are Will Rogers Memorial Museum Ropers (docents). And they love flying. They are looking ahead to Sunday, August 18, and the Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In. They will land on the 2,000-foot grass strip adjacent to Will’s birthplace home and on the ranch his father settled in the 1800s. The grass strip might sound imposing to some, but to these three it is a good landing. ‘It’s a good grass strip, very smooth,” said Bacon. “It’s so rewarding, landing in the grass.” Egbert, who earned his pilot’s license at 17, said he is a “grass field pilot. I love it. Flying around, I learned to fly off grass.” “Grass is so forgiving,” said Martha, who landed on grass strips often when flying with her late husband. They enjoy the experience of offering spectators the opportunity to look at their planes, fellowship with other pilots and pay tribute to Will and Wiley on the anniversary of their August 15, 1935 death in an Alaska plane crash. Each year on the Sunday nearest August 15, the Fly-In at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch marks the anniversary of Will and Wiley’s death in a 1935 plane crash in Alaska. Will was lured by the possibility of seeing Siberia from the

air and flew to Alaska with Wiley Post, who was intending to explore a trans-Atlanic air route to Russia. Bacon and Will look-alike Lester Lurk of St. Genevieve, Mo., will make a popular return to the Fly-In as Will and Wiley, landing about 10 a.m. Will Rogers Ropers, volunteers at Will Rogers Memorial Museum, share a passion for Will Rogers’ history and the Claremore museum dedicated in his memory. Five of the almost 50 trained docents also share

his love of flying. The three active flying Ropers, introduced to Will and the volunteer program through the Fly-In, will join other pilots for the annual event. Egbert the newest docent of the five, has been at the Fly-In since the event started more than two decades ago. Bacon, from Pryor, has been coming almost as long, and Martha Swartz from the Owasso/Collinsville area, went to a Fly-In about three

years ago, hoping to volunteer — and was talked into joining the next Roper training class. Nonagenarian Jean McCreery, one of the last trained WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots), is often in the Museum workroom sorting and filing photos. Bob Sperry, who flew with the Army Air Corps, later the Air Force, is a Roper greeting tourists. Egbert and Ron Lessley, another Claremore pilot, have flown the fly-over at Will Rogers Memorial Museum on August 15, the date of Will’s death and the time when a wreath is being placed at the Rogers’ family tomb. The 2012 Will Rogers & Wiley Post Fly-In was a record success in numbers — planes landing and spectators watching. The Fly-In at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch has outgrown the former designated parking space. New parking will be opened up for this year’s event, Sunday, August 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Fly-In has grown from a small number of planes with pilots showcasing their planes and sharing stories with each other and spectators, to an event which last year drew more than 100 planes and several thousand spectators. Visitors can bring their own lawn chair and sit on the grass watching planes land. They are welcomed onto the field for a

close-up of planes and visit with pilots. Additional entertainment on the grounds will be Cherokee Storyteller Robert Lewis, inflatables for children, antique and classic car show, and tours of the 1875 ranch house to see the room where Will was born Nov. 4, 1879, and tours of the era-correct Amish-built barn. Spectators will have an opportunity to vote for Peoples Choice car and plane. Tim Jarrett will return as Fly-In coordinator with Civil Air Patrol helping park planes. Ross Adkins and Tony Isler will be on the microphone identifying planes and pilots as they arrive. Concessions will be available and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum Store will have a booth. Will Rogers Downs Cherokee Nation Business, for the second consecutive year, has joined Will Rogers Memorial Museum and Will Rogers Memorial Foundation as the Fly-in presenting sponsor. Back-to-School Shopping Without Straining Your Budget Avoid high prices at the mall – shop for school clothes at Children’s Orchard.

By Susan Erler Being a mom at back-to-school time can be so stressful. You want your children to be able to wear high-quality, name brand clothing, but fitting the name brand clothing price tag into your already stretched budget can be challenging. Most moms will tell you that where there is a will, there is a way, and that is how one savvy local woman turned her passion for a bargain into a thriving business. Kari Hendrix, owner of Children’s Orchard, located at 12307 E. 96th St. N. in Owasso, knew she was on to something when she discovered a way to shop and get the items she needed, but without paying high prices. “When I first became pregnant, I received a lot of clothing and other baby items which seemed to be outgrown almost before they had a chance to be worn,” Kari laughs. “So, I heard about Children’s Orchard and began bringing in all my items that Shayli had outgrown. They bought them from me and gave me the opportunity to apply the money earned from these items back into a store credit. And they gave me an additional 25 percent credit for doing it that way.” That was all it took. Kari

was sold on the concept and thrilled that she didn’t have to spend a big chunk of her family’s budget on children’s clothing. When she found out that the store was available to purchase, she jumped at the opportunity. That was two and a half years ago, and she is thrilled to be able to provide this service to moms and dads everywhere. The store, located next to Dollar Tree in the Owasso Market Shopping Center, has been a fixture in the community for 13-and-a-half years. Educating customers on how to make the store “Buy Back” policy work for them is Kari’s passion. “Our buying philosophy is very easy. Customers can bring in two average sized plastic grocery bags full of clothing, books, toys, or a couple pieces of equipment. And we promise to serve them in 20 minutes or less. They will know what dollar amount they can receive from their items and can then decide if they want cash or store credit,” she explains. At that point, the customer can choose store credit and receive an additional 25 percent value for their items, or they can receive cash on the spot. Walk-in buying takes place

Children’s Orchard owner Kari Hendrix and her daughter, Shayli. Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those who have a larger amount of items to sell can simply call ahead and schedule an appointment time. Kari makes it an extremely easy process too. Clothing needs to be brought in pre-laundered and in good condition. She points out that in a typical “buy” from a client, they will not usually accept all of the items they bring in, and if customers know to expect that, there are no surprises. “I have many clients who begin shopping with us when their children are newborns and they continue until their child reaches 10 years of age. Once you

learn how to leverage your dollars and be able to find quality clothing at a lower cost than department stores, it is easy to get hooked.” Children’s Orchard also offers some items which are brand new, but still keep with the lower price tag her customers crave. Boutique items such as hair bows, sunglasses, dance leotards, jewelry and more are all current, hot fashion items but still reasonably priced. August will include many back-to-school sales including all the latest top brands at a fraction of retail prices. Just a few of the brands will be Gap, Gymboree,

Justice, Ralph Lauren and more. The first weekend in August will be their big “Jean Event.” As you might have guessed, this is the time to stock up and sell name brand jeans. As an added bonus, that will be Oklahoma’s Tax-Free Weekend, so the savings are even greater. Kari and her staff have so many fun events scheduled in the next few months that the best way to be “in the know” is to sign up to receive emails from the store. “We send out email specials that are specific to our Owasso store only, so we are able to really target our audience.” Those that enjoy being the first to know about every great sale can now sign up to receive text messages from Children’s Orchard. Soon the location will have the numbers needed to begin the text program and when you come in and sign up, it puts you even closer to learning the latest news before everyone else. Don’t wait another day to begin earning money while you are shopping! Stop by Children’s Orchard today. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Teach Kids about Money with Hands-On Approach Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.

By Ashley D. Wood It’s never too early to start teaching your children about money, how to earn it, how to save it and how to spend it wisely. You can begin by providing kids with a visual, hands-on money-saving experience. One way for kids of any age to learn about saving money is by setting an example at home, according to Amber Holloway, RCB Bank employee and mother of two boys, ages six and seven, who are learning to save money. “If your children see you saving money, then they are more likely to be excited about saving themselves,” said Holloway of Inola. “At our house, we have a change jar that sits in a central location. Our kids see us adding our spare change and extra dollars to it and watch it grow.” To provide your children with a more personal experience, give them their own piggy banks and let them fill it with the money they receive from birthday gifts, allowances or other reasons, said Holloway. “When my kids’ banks are full or even semi-full, we go through them together and count the money to see how much they have,” she said. “My kids love this part because this is when they get to decide how much they are going to put into their savings

account and how much they are going to spend on a toy or whatever else they may want. It has also helped my kids learn about how money works, because they know they have a certain amount of money to buy things, and if they don’t have enough, then they have to search to find something else in their price range or choose to save their money.” Letting your children actively manage their money will help strengthen their money sense. Take a trip to the bank and, with your help, let your kids open up their own checking or savings accounts like the RCB Bank Kids Club accounts. Only $20 is required to open a Kids Club account and there is no minimum balance necessary. Kids can earn 0.10% APY* with a Kids Club savings account, but they are limited to the number of transfers they can make to their savings accounts each month. Kids Club checking accounts have unlimited transfers but do not earn interest. Kids Club members receive a backpack of goodies when they open their account and a quarterly newsletter with their bank statement that includes money-wise tips, games and other kid-friendly information as well

as a chance for them to enter drawings and win prizes throughout the year. Each time you visit the bank, let your children fill out their own deposit slips and take them to the teller. When their account statements (and yours) arrive, sit down as a family and balance the registers together. “As a child, you benefit from all the fun perks while at the same time learning how to save and manage your money for the present and future,” Holloway said. “As a parent, you benefit by helping your child learn this important step in life.” Make it personal. Get creative. Keep it fun. Teaching kids about money when they’re young will help prepare them to be financially fit adults. Parents can sign up their children in RCB Bank’s Kids Club at any one of its 33 branches across Oklahoma and into Kansas. Find a location nearest you at www.RCBbank.com. For more information about RCB Bank’s Kids Club, call 855-Bank-RCB or visit your local RCB Bank to speak with a New Accounts Representative. *Kids Club Savings Account:* Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is accurate as of July 1, 2013 and may change at any time. NNew Additions to South Pointe The service department at South Pointe Chevrolet continues to grow.

By Duane Blankenship Parts and Service Director Ben Perry recently announced the addition of Service Advisor Rebecca Speck to the South Pointe Chevrolet service team. Rebecca says, “I am now where I belong and where I want to be. I love my job and the people I work with.” Rebecca says she has always enjoyed cars, even as a young girl. Her first car was a Chevy Chevelle. She and members of her family customized it, making

it a high-performance vehicle. “With it came a lot of responsibility,” she said. “Dad made me change my own tires and hoses and keep maintenance records.” Rebecca has been in customer service and in automotive service for the past ten years. “I saw an ad for a service advisor at a used car lot and applied for the job.” She was hired on the spot. “My new boss took a chance with me,” said

Rebecca, “but giving me the opportunity worked out for us both.” South Pointe’s Randy Brooks and Mike Renner serviced the car lot’s vehicles for Rebecca. “They always took time to explain recommended services and taught me a lot.” If you haven’t been to South Pointe Chevrolet for a while, you’ll be surprised at the changes that have been implemented to improve your service experience. Manager Ben Perry has nearly 30

years in the business, mainly with GM products. “It’s great being here at South Pointe Chevrolet and working with such a great service team,” said Ben. Ben’s organizational skills are obvious and he has an inherent dedication to serving customers. After spending just a couple of minutes with him, you realize how much he enjoys people. Ben says his ongoing goal is improving customer retention, with the ultimate aim of “once a customer, always a customer.” “We earn the loyalty of our customers through continued hard work and making sure each realizes that we’re doing our best to put them first,” said Ben. “The only way you can fully appreciate our efforts is to come in and give us a try.” South Pointe’s service technicians have some of the highest ratings in their zone, and Ben is doing his best to ensure that they keep their top rating. “We want customers to understand that there is truly no reason to go anywhere else for products or service,” he emphasized. South Pointe does literally everything for your vehicle. “You can buy tires, batteries, and accessories from us. You can have your vehicle serviced if you’re having a

problem, and you can bring it in for suggested manufacturer maintenance whether you bought your GM vehicle from South Pointe or not. We’ll change your oil, rotate your tires, and even detail your vehicle,” said Ben. South Pointe technicians are highly trained in specific areas of vehicle maintenance and service. These areas of training include heavy-line techs, drivability, suspension and steering, trim and electrical, and heating and air conditioning. Whatever service you might need, South Pointe will have a technician specifically trained and skilled in that area. You’ll find just about anything for your vehicle at South Pointe with the exception of gasoline. “Come in and get acquainted,” said Ben. “We want you to experience the first-class treatment you’ll be given.” When you stop by, be sure to see Ben and ask him about the Manager’s Special.

FFree Yourself From Tobacco Liberty Vapor in Catoosa offers tobacco-free alternatives with electronic cigarettes.

By Cassie Woods When Tyler Lewis opened Liberty Vapor in Catoosa in February, he had no idea how quickly the electronic cigarette business would take off. With very little time to advertise, Lewis feels honored that his business has grown so much simply through word-of-mouth referrals. Perhaps one of the reasons is that a trip to Liberty Vapor promises to be a very personal experience. Upon entering the store, customers are greeted by Dax, the friendly canine mascot. Three employees are available to show customers a very large selection of fluids from two different product lines. Customers are free to test all fluids in the flavors and strength they prefer, and staff works with each customer individually to ensure that they are getting the perfect combination of products. They are also encouraged to visit the other side of the business, Hydro Customs, specializing in custom firearms. “We want this to be a very relaxing experience for our customers,” said Lewis. “We encourage them to come in and hang out in the vape bar, talk about guns, cars, bikes, their problems, vent, detox, whatever they need and let us help them find a flavor they will love until their next visit.”

Scott Kelly and Tyler Lewis will assist you in finding the right e-cigarette for your needs at Liberty Vapor. Lewis is former military and a fifth-generation entrepreneur. He prides himself in his veteran-owned and operated business that offers superior customer service. “All I know is small business and customer service,” said Lewis. “My customers are very important to me and I want this to be a place they feel comfortable coming back

to. We also love to reach out to the military population. We are very patriotic, and many of our customers enjoy knowing that we support our troops.” Electronic cigarettes produce a vapor that typically contains nicotine, satisfying nicotine cravings without inhaling the carcinogens and toxic chemicals. Users get the

nicotine in a cool mist instead of by inhaling toxic smoke. In addition to reducing health risks like lung cancer and cardiovascular disease, customers can also save money by switching to electronic cigarettes. They only need to purchase a one-time starter kit that comes with rechargeable batteries, and then refillable fluid cartridges as needed. Liberty Vapor offers a warranty on all the products they sell. “We offer some of the least expensive starting kits a customer can get,” said Lewis. “A single cigarette with charger is $24.95 here. That’s a $10 savings over most places, which would give you enough to buy an extra bottle of fluid here. The double cigarette kits with a charger and case are only $59.95.” The liquids come in several strengths of nicotine and taste varieties that include tobacco flavor without the actual tobacco. All of the employees in the store have personal experience and positive results with switching to electronic cigarettes. “I was a social smoker,” said Lewis. “But I came back from my military deployment a smoker. E-cigarettes have helped me free myself of the nicotine addiction and improve my health.” “I personally was a smoker for

31 years,” said Scott Kelly, Liberty Vapor employee. “I switched to e-cigarettes and haven’t had a real cigarette since January. Since then I have experienced a better nicotine satisfaction, clearer skin and better taste buds. Now I make it my goal to help others achieve that as well.” According to Lewis, many customers are afraid of unknown ingredients in e-cigarettes, but he assures that his products contain no antifreeze. The main ingredient is propylene glycol, which is recognized as safe by the USDA and used in many foods. The fluids offer nicotine at the same level as caffeine while cutting out 2,900 carcinogens. It still curbs the appetite and mellows the smoker out when they feel anxiety but allows taste buds to come back and, as medical research shows, provides for five years lung recovery in only one year. “It’s really refreshing to hear our customers talk about how much better they feel since switching,” said Lewis. “This has been a great opportunity to help people, have fun and make money at same time.” Liberty Vapor is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For the latest product details from both businesses, search Facebook for Liberty Vapor E-Cigs or Hydro Customs.

NNot Just Any Knee Doc Patient Judy Bates raves about her orthopedic surgeon Dr. LaButti, who performed her life-changing knee replacement operation.

By Lorrie Ward When Judy Bates of Chelsea, Okla. had Dr. LaButti perform a replacement on her right knee, she had two main goals – to walk without a limp and to walk up and down stairs normally. “For years, I had to take one stair at a time, and my job requires a lot of walking,” says Judy, who works as a customer service representative at the Cherokee Casino in Ramona. Dr. LaButti was recommended to Judy by co-workers who had gone to the orthopedic surgeon with various problems and had achieved great results. Judy had experienced knee problems for decades, after being in gymnastics in high school and experiencing many injuries, and then a major injury to her knee when she was 16. “I have been on crutches too many times to count,” Judy relates. “I was a hairdresser for 30 years, and I can’t tell you how many times I had to go to work on crutches.” Getting around in recent years had become so difficult for her that she was prescribed medication for the pain. Judy knew she needed surgery but didn’t want to be operated on by the doctor she was seeing at the

After hearing about Dr. LaButti at work, she saw his ad in the newspaper one day. Then the next day, she heard a radio advertisement, as well as read a story about one of his patients. “I figured this was a divine message!” she says with a laugh.

Judy made an appointment with Dr. LaButti and was impressed with his professionalism and attention to details. “He was very honest with me about the procedure and what to expect,” she says. “He told me I would have about six weeks of

pain, by the ninth week I would be glad I did it, and by the twelfth week I would be back to work.” Judy was amazed at the truth of Dr. LaButti’s words and at her recovery. At ten weeks, she and her husband took a trip to North Carolina to see their son and his

family. While they were there, she walked up a three-quarter mile hill in a mountainous area and relates, “My knee did not give me any pain at all.” The group also visited the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, and Judy was able to enjoy every minute of it. “I climbed up and down every ladder they had, from bridge to engine room, all 15 decks,” she recalls. “And then we went in the submarine and did the same thing.” Judy has returned to work in good health, but she feels that with her history of injuries, her other knee will probably eventually have to be replaced as well. She is not worried, however. “I will go straight back to Dr. LaButti when the time comes,” she says. “He is so very knowledgeable – he gives you confidence from the very beginning.”

Over 40 Years Experience in Treating Pain hobby like golf. He spends his spare time doing research and learning more about chiropractic care. All he does is study, study, study.” He likes to stay updated with all new procedures but also relies on the training he received in school. “I learned how to do a physical exam during my training. We could not rely on MRIs because there were none. I spent a lot of time learning differential diagnosis, which is what I think distinguishes my practice from others.” Although Dr. Mitchell is required to take several hours a year of continuing education to renew his license, he reads a lot and participates in Internet forums with chiropractic physicians from around the world. “We compare notes on interesting cases,” he says. “If one of us has an unusual case, we can post the X-rays and lab results with a description of the

problem and get opinions from chiropractors all over the world. Of course, no patient names are mentioned.” Many patients who began seeking relief from back and neck pain when Dr. Mitchell first began to practice in Pryor will drive to Claremore to get treatments even today. He also has patients who began seeing him while they were children. Word-of-mouth referrals have patients driving from Vinita, Big Cabin, Henryetta, Sapulpa, Inola, Adair, Chouteau and Bristow to seek pain relief, according to Beverly. Respected by his peers in the community, area medical doctors also work cooperatively with Dr. Mitchell, referring patients in pain, especially related to car accidents. Dr. Mitchell explains that while he receives referrals from area doctors, “I don’t interfere with the treatment plan prescribed by the referring doctor. For

continued from page 1 example, if a patient is being treated for high blood pressure or diabetes, we don’t treat those things,” he adds. “I know that medical doctors are carzeful when they refer patients. They know about our reputation for helping patients get immediate relief from pain without drugs.” Staying on top of technology and changing techniques, Dr. Mitchell’s office offers two different kinds of spinal decompression. Flexion Distraction Traction is most effective for spondylolisthesis, he explains, but other conditions benefit from this method as well. “This method is so gentle that patients often fall asleep during treatment and we have to wake them up when it’s done.” The other spinal decompression DTS Triton traction system is FDA approved and has been clinically proven with a very high success rate for the pain and symptoms associated with herniated and/or bulging

discs, even after failed back surgery. “Our treatment is based on painless, non-surgical, natural methods,” he says. Conditions most frequently treated in the clinic include herniated disc, degenerative discs, pinched nerve, neck injury and pain, back injury and pain, sciatic nerve pain, hip and leg pain, arm and shoulder pain, fibromyalgia, headache, (migraine, sinus, tension), carpal tunnel syndrome, whiplash and TMJ. “When the spine is correctly aligned,” says Dr. Mitchell, “patients don’t require as much, if any, pain medication. They are hospitalized less and stay healthier.” For more information, contact

More Than a Tile Store showroom at 1875 N. Hwy. 66 offers a variety of carpet, hardwood floors, wood laminate flooring, glass shower doors, mirrors, granite countertops, sinks, tubs and showers as well as custom cabinetry from which to choose. “We pretty much do it all and we do it well,” says Sementi. “My crew has been with me for years and they are the best.” Sementi and his crew take pride in their work. “Reputation is everything,” he says. “If you ask around for referrals, people tell us that our name continually comes up. We pride ourselves on that, and we bend over backwards for people.” Sementi, who supervises each job, initially visits with clients to get their vision for the project. He then shares what he envisions with them and with his crew. “They are an incredibly talented group,” he says. “I am really hands on,” he adds, “but I don’t micromanage my crew. I am involved in the scheduling and making sure the materials arrive on time. Basically, I steer the ship. I am there to provide direction. They make it happen.” He continues, “I’ve always had a customer service attitude and a desire to please people. We do high-end work and if the customer is not 100 percent satisfied, we will make it right.” The business will also do house

additions. Recently, they completed a sunroom on a 25-year-old house. “They wanted the addition to look like it had been there from day one,” he explains. “It was a challenge because the house’s exterior was rock. We had to locate the matching rock, which we were able to do by finding a house that was being torn down. It was an exact match and turned out really good.” While most of Sementi’s business is in Tulsa, Owasso, Glenpool and the Claremore area, his reputation for customer service and quality work have landed jobs for the company in Bartlesville, Okmulgee and Muskogee. “We have a huge customer base,” he says. “We are well-known in the industry for getting the job done in a timely, professional manner.” Tony’s showroom is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment only on Saturday.

Nostalgic Toy Makes Comeback most popular monkeys—and she can’t keep them in stock very long—are sports-themed sock monkeys. “I can do the Texas Rangers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Cowboys as well as collegiate teams like OU and OSU,” she says. “The OU monkeys go fast. So do the Thunder monkeys.” Although Dormier’s mother had made them when she was a child, her interest in the stuffed monkeys was renewed when she noticed the once popular animals were making a comeback several years ago. “I made an OU-themed one for my 16-year-old granddaughter because she’s such a fan,” she says. “My granddaughter, who is now 18, loved it.”

Because the cute creatures are popular again, Dormier is also offering customers the option of making their own—not from scratch—but finishing off the monkey, making it a labor of love. Individuals or groups can make an appointment with Dormier to select their own unfinished animal to fill with stuffing and stitch up the opening. “I can even do the final sewing for them,” she says. “This project would be fun for any group, including a birthday party project.” Dormier has tables set up for groups to complete their sock monkey on site or you can buy the bodies and finish them at home or at a group meeting. “They are so easy to finish,” she

continued from page 1 adds. “They are partially constructed and require little sewing.” Recently, Dormier was meeting with her craft group at the Inola Library. “I was making a small OU sock monkey and had it sold to another crafter before I had even finished it,” she says. Monkeys range in price— from $10 to $25—and come in a variety of sizes, depending on the sock size. For those who want to dress their sock monkeys, Dormier even offers a variety of clothes for the lovable creatures. For specialty monkeys, Dormier needs a two-week notice. “I have to order the socks,” she explains. Sock monkeys, however, aren’t just for children. “I had a

classmate—from 1968—who saw my Facebook page and ordered a sock monkey made from a horse-patterned sock,” she adds. “Whatever sock monkey pattern someone wants, I can find the socks if I need to.” Dormier’s sock monkeys frequently find their way to fundraising events in Inola, putting a smile on the face of the recipient—no matter their age. She will soon be fulfilling an order for 11 farm-themed sock monkeys as children’s gifts. “They make great gifts for any occasion,” she adds. “It takes me an hour to two to make one, depending on the size but I like the variety.” The monkeys have even been shipped to Colorado and Texas and as far away as the North Pole,

Alaska after people discovered her Facebook page, where you can view an assortment of the colorful, cute sock monkeys crafted with love. If you’re looking for a unique gift or want to make your own sock monkey drop-in to Country Grannie’s Playhouse.

Charity Bunco Tournament Returns to Inola The annual Bunco tournament hosted by Gamma Pi ESA will benefit the Food 4 Kids program.

By Carol Beck-Round Nothing creates more excitement in this rural Oklahoma community than a friendly game of Bunco, especially when it’s for a good cause. The Inola Gamma Pi Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) chapter is sponsoring its 6th annual Bunco fundraiser on Saturday, August 24. The Inola Round-up Club will once again be the place to spend a wonderful evening of competition, prizes, food and fun, all for a worthy cause.

The club chooses a different organization or charity to benefit from the funds raised each year, and this year’s recipient will be the Food 4 Kids program at Inola Elementary School. Sponsored by the Salvation Army, the program provides backpacks containing food for underprivileged children to take home on the weekends. “Last year,” says Janie Stevens, club member, “we presented half of our funds to the program while

the other half was donated to the firefighters. This year, we decided to donate the entire amount raised to the children.” The Inola Ministry House, which provides free clothing and food to those in need, will also benefit, as Bunco participants who bring a non-perishable food item will receive a chance to win a basket of assorted gift items. The more food items donated, the more chances you have to win. “We’ve had themed baskets

in the past, including a Made in Oklahoma basket full of items,” says Stevens. Although this year’s basket doesn’t have a particular theme, you can bet these resourceful women will have it packed chockfull of unique items. Local merchants as well as ESA members donate prizes, which include gift certificates to local businesses as well as an assortment of merchandise. Over 100 door prizes are given away during the evening, plus about 30 prize baskets. “We’ve had everything from cases of pop to gift baskets to give away,” she adds. Bunco participants may also purchase a $1 ticket to participate in a 50/50 cash drawing. The winner receives half of the proceeds while the other half goes to Gamma Pi. In addition, the club is selling tickets to win overnight accommodations at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, plus dinner for two at McGill’s. “The dinner alone is valued up to $100,” says Carol Applegate, head of the Bunco committee. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Tickets are also on sale for a full/queen-sized hand-embroidered quilt (shown in photo) made by club member Gertrude Riddle. “I spent 15 months making the quilt,” she says. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The quilt is on display at the Inola Library. Participants are already preregistering for the event because seating is limited. “Last year, we ran out of goodie bags,” says Applegate. “While you can pay at the door to participate, pre-registration not only means you get a

Page 25

goodie bag, but you are assured a seat at a Bunco table.” The handcrafted goodie tote bags, made by club members, contain merchandise donated by local merchants and club members, as well as the Bunco rules and score cards. All participants also receive a lunch of a half sandwich, chips and water, coffee or tea. An area celebrity has been joining the Bunco excitement for several years and will be participating again this year. Carly Rush, a morning radio host on 98.5 KVOO, has ties to Inola. Rush was honored with two other KVOO crew members as the Academy of Country Music Medium Market Personalities of the Year for 2013. “She always livens things up,” says Applegate. “She is an enthusiastic player, encouraging others.” Cost is $15 at the door or players can pre-register for $12.50 until August 19. Pre-register by calling (918) 637-0595. Bunco will start at 4 p.m. and will end around 9 p.m. Concessions including sandwiches, chips, drinks and homemade desserts will also be available if you’re still hungry after your free meal. “Everyone always has fun,” says club president Karla Applegate. If you don’t want to miss out on the fun, you’d better pre-register. Seats are going fast.
