It’s About Life
Eye Problems in Your Child’s Sight
Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Home introduces “Life Story” services for families. By Carol Beck-Round Have you ever lost a loved one and then realized you didn’t know that person as well as you wished you had? Maybe you knew your loved one’s birthday and his or her place of birth, but did you really know everything about that person and what defined his or her life? One of the most stressful times in our lives is the death of a loved one. For over 42 years, Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service and Crematory has been assisting the Rogers County area with the difficult decisions to be made when a loved one dies. For Jim and Cindy Smith, owners and operators, funerals are about celebrating the deceased one’s life. Although MMS has been offering photos on DVD for the past eight years, the funeral home wanted to take it a step further by preserving family history.
“Everyone has stories to share,” says Jim. “However, we don’t always know their stories. For example, grandpa may have
come to Oklahoma in a covered wagon and the younger generation never realized the (continued on page 28)

Primary Eye Care Associates urges parents to have their children’s eyes examined by an optometrist, rather than relying on school vision screenings. By Lorrie Ward Oftentimes people associate vision problems with aging, making the assumption that children are born with perfect vision. Numerous studies, however, contradict this notion.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) estimates that “nearly 25 percent of school-age children have vision problems.” Yet, 86 percent of (continued on page 28)

Momentum Toyota of Tulsa is under new ownership and is now Fowler Toyota of Tulsa. Located on the Broken Arrow Expressway at Sheridan Road, Fowler’s goal is to be Tulsa’s leading Toyota dealer. The Fowler family is Oklahoma born and bred, and has four familyowned dealerships in Norman, with its fifth now in Tulsa. The new ownership of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa became official on October 3. Fowler has made many improvements to the dealership and vastly expanded inventory. A grand opening celebration is taking place through December 31 and is featuring outstanding sales incentives on select
vehicles, as well as many drawings for door prizes. Full-sized Toyota Tundras will be offered at zero percent interest for 72 months, and Camrys will be available at zero percent for 60 months as part of the grand opening activities. General Manager Ken Wilkens said, “Fowler Toyota has a huge inventory of both select preowned and certified pre-owned vehicles from which customers may make their selections. Our certified pre-owned vehicles have undergone a rigorous 128-point inspection to be qualified. When a new Toyota dealership has been established, they qualify to receive extra shipments of vehicles to support grand open-
ing activities, and we will have a great supply of both pre-owned and new vehicles available during our grand opening.” Toyota says the 2013 Toyota Tundra trucks are simply the most powerful vehicles on the road today, and Tundra provides the best value, good looks and best safety features in its 2013 model. The full-sized Tundra is available in regular cab, double cab, and crew max body styles. Some of the Tundra’s specifications include a 310 hp, 4.6 liter aluminum i-Force V8 engine, electronic ignition system, 5-speed and 6-speed ECT with intelligence, rearwheel drive, power-assisted front (continued on page 28)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
The Cost of The Twelve Days of Christmas in Oklahoma BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
Every year since 1984 PNC Wealth Management has released its Christmas Price Index. The PNC Christmas Price Index is a humorous national commodity price index based on the cost of the items in the popular Christmas carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” It measures the changing cost of goods over time. I thought it would be interesting to compare the cost of those items from local vendors, here in Oklahoma where possible, to see if the cost of the items would be less than what the national index numbers were. In other words, I wanted to try to do “The Twelve Days of Christmas” on a budget and see if I could do better. And low and behold, the cost in many cases (not all) were lower! Hallelujah! It is true that the cost of living is less in the great state of Oklahoma!
The following are my findings: ‘12 Oklahoma ‘11 National 1 Partridge $23 $15 1 Pear Tree $19 $170 2 Turtle Doves $150 $125 3 French Hens $36 $150 4 Calling Birds $516 $520 5 Gold Rings $975 $64 6 Geese-a-Laying $67 $162 7 Swans-a-Swimming $8295 $6300 8 Maids-a-Milkin $58 $58 9 Ladies Dancing $765 $6294 10 Lords-a-Leaping $500 $4767 11 Pipers Piping $1925 $2428 12 Drummers Drumming $2100 $2630 Total $15,429 $23,683
So, just buying the items for the 12th day alone, with one round of all 12 presents, would cost $15,429.14.
Now, as you can see, the biggest cost “savings” came from the dancing ladies, lords-a-leaping, pipers piping, and drummers drumming. That means that cost of services, therefore, wages are less. However, in all fairness, this savings may be because I hired each of these for only one hour of service. In the national study, they may have hired them for longer (their study is not specific about how many hours they used them). Being budget conscious, I figured an hour would do. By far, the highest priced item are the silly swans. Who would have figured? And the lowest priced item on the index was the pear tree, coming in at a whopping $19. What a deal! One more thing, “The True Cost of Christmas” is calculated by following the exact instructions in the song (buying a partridge in a pear tree on each of the twelve days, buying two turtle doves from the second day onward, for a total of 22 turtle doves, etc.) for the complete set of 364 items. The “True Cost of an Oklahoma
Christmas” would cost $75,997.98. Wow! As a penny pinching, budget minded Money Maven, may I recommend that you don’t! If you want to do something really special for your “true love” as the song says, then print the lyrics off of the internet and video yourself singing the song on your phone and send it to them or post it on YouTube. It will make just as a lasting impression I am sure. Besides, what in the heck would you do with all these crazy birds once the deal was over? Geez! The price of each item is set as follows: The pear tree comes from Sander’s Nursery in Broken Arrow. The partridge, turtle doves, French hens, geese and swans are determined by The Tulsa Zoo. The price of a Canary (Calling bird) is from PetSmart in Owasso. JC Penney’s set the cost for the gold rings. The maids are assumed to be unskilled laborers earning the Federal Minimum Wage. The Tulsa Ballet provided the hourly cost of “guesting” for an hour for the lords-a-leaping. A Tulsa dance company provided estimates for the ladies dancing. The going-rate for drummers and pipers was provided by City of Tulsa Pipes and Drums. For more cheap Christmas gift ideas, call or email me and I will toss a couple of ideas your way along with helping you to invest your savings. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. Will Rogers Blvd. Owners Cari Bohannan and Susan Todd’s new business features Maison Blanche La Craie Paint; La Craie is French for “the chalk,” referring to chalk-based paint. “The paint is great for those do-it-yourselfers who like to paint furniture, cabinetry, craft items and more without the hassle of stripping, sanding or priming,” says Susan. “It is very user-friendly.” Workshops and mini-classes are offered regularly to teach the basic and advanced techniques of this painting method. If you already have a favorite piece you would like restored, they also offer custom painting. Vintage jewelry, couture aprons, faithbased gifts, home décor, trendy regular and plus-sized clothing, and accessories are also available at their boutique. Savannah’s Boutique at 514 W. Will Rogers Blvd. is filled with a great selection of hot new fashion, accessories and gifts. “At Savannah’s, we strive to keep our prices as low as possible, so you can enjoy your shopping experience to its fullest,” says

While you’re out shopping, let your hunger pangs draw you to a quarter pound all-beef hot dog at Perry Dogs, located at 103 N. Cherokee. Two years after purchasing their first hot dog cart, owners Perry and Pamela Stafford opened their storefront in May of this year. The carts have been so successful that Perry, who is also a medic with EMSA, and Pamela, a former nurse, gave up their full-time professions to open the restaurant. “People describe our hot dogs as the ‘best hot dog ever,’” says Perry. “We invite you to stop by and see why, and top it any way you want, with options like macaroni and cheese and brisket.” Also available on the menu are fried bologna sandwiches, grilled ham and cheese, frito pies, and an amazing chili cheese wrap. “This is comfort food done right,” he adds. FFeeling the Holiday Stress? Let Akira Sushi Bar help – they offer catering for parties of all sizes and gift cards that make perfect presents.
By Lorrie Ward Holiday festivities are supposed to be joyous and fun, but the enjoyment can quickly dissipate for those who put in hours of hard work and planning to create a festive atmosphere for everyone else. If your month before Christmas is starting to give you nightmares where “visions of sugar plums” are supposed to be, why not reduce some of this stress by letting Akira Sushi Bar in Owasso cater your holiday party or gettogether? “We do all kinds of parties – holiday, birthday, meetings – and no party is too big or too small,” says Quinton Wong, owner of Owasso’s Akira Sushi Bar. “We don’t have a set catering menu, but work with each customer to design their own unique menu.” All kinds of options are available for your party. Quinton reports that some people choose to pick up their orders, while others like to have a personal chef on site. Clients can even opt to have a sushi bar set up on site. Like the catering menu, the level of party assistance is uniquely geared to the client’s tastes and expectations for their party. Even if you are not planning
an event, the holiday hustle and bustle can certainly make you too tired to feel like making
dinner some days. After a long day of shopping or work, why not relax in Akira Sushi Bar’s

comfortable atmosphere? Akira not only serves a full lunch and dinner menu, but also hosts a happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. every day, during which they serve half-price appetizers, $2 domestic beer, and $3 hot sake. In fact, Quinton recommends hot sake and sushi as a great wintertime treat any time of day. “It will be sure to warm you up!” he says. You can also check some items off your Christmas shopping list by purchasing gift cards for family and friends at Akira Sushi Bar, which have no expiration date and with balances that can be checked online. While you are unwinding at Akira, you will want to check out their new, updated menu, offering even more sushi rolls, entrées, appetizers, seafood and stir fry than ever before. Quinton notes that the restaurant now has a full list of domestic beers, wines and sake, and encourages customers to check Akira’s Facebook page regularly for specials. “In November, we ran a special on ‘Purple Haze,’ which is hot sake mixed with Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur,” he notes,
adding that there were many daily specials on menu items as well. “People should check often because we are always running new specials.” Quinton and Chef Huy Huynh have spent the nine months since Akira Sushi Bar’s entrance onto the Owasso scene listening to locals, in order to determine customers’ taste and add appropriate new items. This displays their commitment to personal service, which extends to the local community as well, as evidenced by their generous donations to local school and charitable organizations. For December, Quinton especially wants to concentrate on helping Owasso Community Resources refill their food banks. “After Thanksgiving, food banks are often empty,” says Quinton. “So we feel it is a great time to help them stock up for the coming Christmas holiday.” Owasso Community Resources will act as one of the host sites for the Tulsa area’s Angel Tree Project, and Quinton wants Akira Sushi Bar to assist in this endeavor as well. “Owasso and the surrounding towns are great communities, and we have really gotten to know people in the last nine months,” says Quinton. “We want to give something back.” For more information, contact

WWelcome Home
Canoe Brook Assisted Living is a place where residents and employees alike can feel at home.
By Lorrie Ward Several years ago, Michelle Heckman and her mother were faced with the difficult task of placing her beloved grandmother into assisted living. “While we were looking, we encountered several people who lacked compassion or tenderness – but that was exactly what our family needed in those circumstances.” Though Michelle’s family finally
was successful in procuring care for her grandmother, Michelle could not shake the negative memories of their encounters. She told her mother, “If I can ever be in the position to help people in this circumstance, I will.” So it is no surprise that when she had the chance to become marketing director for
Canoe Brook Assisted Living & Alzheimer’s Care Community in Catoosa last year, Michelle took the position. The decision was not immediate, however; it came after she actually accepted an invitation from a friend to visit Canoe Brook and feel the difference for herself. There, she witnessed happy seniors going about their daily activities with
Residents enjoying each other’s company at Canoe Brook.
the assurance of knowing someone is on hand to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week with daily problems or necessities related to age (like slight, age-related dementia) or health (medication distribution, fall prevention or alert), while still maintaining the independence and privacy afforded by having their own living spaces. Yet, there was plenty of social interaction available with meals served in the common dining room, activities such as art classes, crafts, games and socials, weekly outings for shopping and dinners out on the town, and weekly “pampering sessions” featuring manicures and pedicures by experienced staff. Canoe Brook’s care for and connectedness with the elderly and their families was just what Michelle had envisioned years before. “The atmosphere in the building instantly grabbed me – and a year later, here I am,” Michelle says. “The family-like environment just draws people to it.” Proof of this last statement can be found within the residents’ own stories. Four months ago, Kathy came for a weekend respite stay to, as she states, “give my daughter who had been caring for me a little break,” and ended up loving it so much she stayed, calling it “the best choice I ever made” and vowing she wants to stay there to the end of her days. Another resident, Patricia, who recently won the title of “Miss Senior Oklahoma,” openly shares her love for Canoe Brook, saying,
“Everyone is so friendly, warm, and loving.” The upcoming holidays will provide no exceptions to this experience. Canoe Brook will host a big party for residents and their families and a Parade of Trees Auction. For this auction, area vendors decorate and donate trees, which are displayed the first part of December and auctioned at the dinner party on Thursday, December 13, with proceeds going to the resident activity fund. Michelle has spent the last year working to get the word out about this amazing haven for seniors, creating a Facebook page with current pictures of people and activities so that anyone in the position like she was in with her grandmother years ago can come and get a glimpse themselves. Interested parties can also visit the website at www.canoebrookassistedliving.com, where they can learn more about Canoe Brook’s Alzheimer’s Community. But even this does not substitute for a personal visit, which is what she recommends. “When somebody comes in the door of Canoe Brook, they can’t help but fall in love with it,” she says. “It’s like you’re coming home.” For more information, contact

SSpectacular Lighted Holiday Displays Two free drive-through events in Muskogee are sure to put you and your family in the holiday spirit.
By Liz Drechsler The largest display of holiday spirit in Northeast Oklahoma can be found in Muskogee. At the Castle Christmas, you can take a slow drive through a Christmas wonderland filled with thousands of lights plus more than 2,000 lighted inflatable displays, with new ones for 2012. In nearby Honor Heights Park, the Garden of Lights has been a popular event, attracting thousands of viewers to enjoy over a million lights displayed throughout the park. Both events are free. For a change of pace, you can choose to tour the Christmas Kingdom in a tractor-drawn hayride which travels through a very special part of the village that is not accessible to cars. The Garden Room is open nightly from 6 to 10 where you can find those one-of-a-kind holiday ornaments for your own display. Soups, sandwiches, cookies, hot chocolate and more are available nightly from 6 to 10 in the Royal Garden Café. Some of the area’s finest artisans will be showing unique handmade gifts. A list of some of these talented artisans and the dates they will be in attendance will be posted at
www.okcastle.com. Stop by the petting zoo for a free, safe and fun experience for the little ones with gentle farm animals. Father Christmas will be at the Castle from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is no cost to talk to Father Christmas, but pictures will be available at a nominal fee. Visit www.okcastle.com for a calendar with dates showing when Father Christmas will be at the Castle. The 2012 Castle Christmas displays range from four feet in height to a towering 20 feet tall. You’ll see all of your favorite Christmas characters including Santa, the elves, many snowmen, reindeer, penguins, polar bears and more. Also you will see many of your favorite fun characters including Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, the Grinch, Elmo, Frosty the Snowman, Homer and Bart Simpson, plus many more. This is thought to be the world’s largest display of inflatables. The Garden of Lights celebration includes a free drivethrough display of over a million shimmering lights displayed throughout the park. Honor
Heights Park, internationally known for its Azalea Festival, draws up to a half million visitors annually. The park’s 122 acres are planted with more than 30,000 azalea bushes and thousands of trees, beautifully situated among the park’s scenic hilltop drive. Christmas lights are placed on trees, bushes and structures throughout the park to enhance the natural beauty of the gardens, waterfalls and ponds. Gates open at 5:30 nightly. Admission to both events are free, but donations are accepted. Both drive-through events are open nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve from 6 to 10 p.m. The Castle’s inside events are open November 22-25, 29-30, and December 1-2, 6-9, and 13-31.

The highly sought-after collectibles are individually numbered, and each one has its own unique flair. The famous line of Christmas fairies are inspired by the artist’s mother and her explanation to him as a child of how Santa does so much in just one night. “The Mark Roberts Fairies are something customers come back for each year,” said Mandi Pritchard, store manager. “Each one is themed to do a particular

Our customers love to see what new fairies come out each year, and we love to help them build their collections.” One of the newest collections of items available in the store is the popular Sir Oliver’s Candles. The famous line of aromatic, hand-poured candles is available in a variety of exquisite finishes and accented with genuine Swarovski crystals. “The Sir Oliver’s Candles are beautiful and smell wonderful,” said Mary Kate. “You can smell them when you walk into a room without them even being lit.” Owners John and Patsy Daniel opened J & J Pharmacy in October, 1985. John had been a pharmacist in Claremore for 10 years before starting his own venture. The husband and wife team have kept their pharmacy in the same location for all 27 years and pride themselves on earning loyal customers through quality service. Voices from Claremore’s elementary schools will join the performance as well, lending an angelic quality to the concert. Claremore Community Chorus has carved its own niche in Claremore tradition over the past two and a half decades. They have performed a wide array of musical types – jazz, classical, secular, Latin, Broadway, old time favorites, love songs, holiday pieces – at local community churches, Robson Performing Arts Center, and Will Rogers Memorial during Will Rogers Days. They have also joined forces with other area choirs to perform at various events in Tulsa. To kick off the holiday season in November, they were an integral part of Dickens on the Boulevard, where they sang carols along Will Rogers Boulevard and at the Belvidere Mansion. This year, they also sang a piece at the annual community Thanksgiving service presented by the Ministerial Alliance of Claremore. After a brief respite following their Christmas concert, the chorus begins warming up their collective vocal chords in preparation for their annual spring concert in May. Even though it is too late to be involved in the Christmas concert, Mary Slater of Claremore Community Chorus wants everyone to know that the

chorus always welcomes new voices and now would be a perfect time to consider involvement for the May concert. “Our chorus is always looking for more voices from both men and women, especially tenor and bass, to enrich our choir with volume and tones, which makes the music come alive more,” Mary says. “Reading music is not required – many of us sing by tones and blending voices under the great direction of Vicki McCuistan, who explains the music and notes for greater understanding and to give meaning to our songs.” Mary also is happy to make mention of the chorus’s new pianist, Ronna Hatley, “whom all feel has brought much talent to our choir.” The chorus meets during the winter and spring for rehearsals every Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Claremore, and Mary encourages those who are interested in becoming a part of the chorus, through voice or instrument, to mark their calendars for January, when new members are accepted and practices for the spring concert begin. “This is a great group of local people with many things in common: love of music, singing, gathering together, and having fun.” For more information, contact

Getting Rid of an Annoying Pain in the Neck Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma provided a light at the end of Jan Crismond’s tunnel of recurring discomfort in her neck.
By Cassie Woods Statistics show that 85 percent of people in the United States will suffer from back or neck pain at some point in their lives.
Jan Crismond was one of those people. That was before she discovered the Intervertebral Disc Decompression (IDD)
Jan Crismond said goodbye to neck pain after undergoing a series of treatments at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma.
treatments available at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma. Jan works right next door at Claremore Health Associates, Inc., yet she had never seen the IDD machines. She knew very little about the treatments until one of the doctors at the practice she works in made the suggestion. “I didn’t realize I suffered from osteoarthritis until Dr. Fortner diagnosed me with it during my exam, and I learned that Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma could be an option for me,” said Jan. IDD therapy is non-surgical and non-invasive. The procedure uses computer technology to target specific spinal segments. Pressure is relieved on the spine as the therapy recreates space for oxygen, water and nutrients to travel unimpeded throughout the spine. The final effect is rehydrated spinal discs through treatments that are safer, less expensive and less painful than surgery or injections. Jan’s IDD therapy consisted of 20 treatments beginning in August, the entire process lasting

about six weeks. During the first two weeks of her treatment, she received treatments five days a week. Jan reports that she felt a great improvement in her range of motion and comfort within the second week of treatment. From there, she alternated between two and three treatments a week until all 20 treatments had been performed. “Ebony administered treatments,” said Jan. “She was an absolute jewel – so gentle and caring. Each week she gradually increased the tension as my treatments progressed. She was always quick to ask if it was too much or too little. Because she really took the time to listen to and work with me, I never had any pain during treatments.” The therapy (which typically lasts 20 sessions) is intended to be a one-time process unless there is a re-injury or an advancement of a progressive illness. But in most cases, once is enough to have a life-changing difference. “It’s really the little things that I noticed to be the biggest differences,” said Jan. “Being able to turn my head to look over my shoulder while driving, improved range of motion in my neck, and even being able to sleep better. I used to have sinus problems that affected my sleep, and my treatment even helped to improve that.” Jan also stated that she used to feel a tingling, numb feeling down her arm every night and day that distracted her from her work or daily routine. She

reports that even though nothing in her environment has changed, since receiving the treatments, she has not had that sensation again. Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma can treat both the cervical (neck) and the lumbar (lower back) areas. In addition to neck pain similar to what Jan was experiencing, IDD treatments have been found to be effective in patients with herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome, sciatica and low back pain. The treatments require a doctor’s prescription and are covered by most insurances. A patient can be referred from their primary care doctor or may be fully evaluated by one of the three doctors at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma to determine their candidacy. You can obtain further information, take a virtual tour of the office, read patient testimonials, and fill out the pre-qualifying form to determine your candidacy for treatments by visiting the website at www.sdoback.com. You may also call Ebony at (918) 341-1250 to fill out the pre-qualifying form.

MMusic Legends Teach Their Craft Northeast Technology Center in Claremore now offers inexpensive music classes with world-renowned musicians. By Carol Beck-Round While legend Roy Clark doesn’t teach guitar or fiddle lessons in Claremore, he has endorsed the Northeast Technology Center’s music school which now carries his name. The Roy Clark Music School opened in February of 2012 with a variety of class offerings in guitar, fiddle, mandolin, music theory, piano, sound mixing, introduction to the music business, and more. A living legend in the music industry, Clark has had a career spanning over 50 years. Besides gracing the stage with a “who’s who” of musicians, he spent over 20 years as host of the hit show “Hee Haw,” has guest-hosted “The Tonight Show,” and is a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Clark has won countless awards, including the Academy of Country Music’s prestigious “Entertainer of the Year” award. Clark continues to perform live, taking his music to all corners of the nation, as well as recording new music. “We are so honored to have the Roy Clark Music School on our Claremore campus,” says Melissa Overcash, adult education director. NTC classes are held in the evenings so that working adults can attend.
However, classes are open to youngsters beginning at age 12. Students have the opportunity to learn directly from pioneers in the music industry and from professionals with impressive résumés. Spring 2013 classes include Mandolin, Music Theory, Twin Fiddle, Western Swing Jam Session, Bluegrass Jam Session, Fiddling with Flair, Introduction to Fiddling, Beginning Fiddling, Contemporary Guitar Jam, Guitar I and II, Advanced Guitar, Bass Guitar I, II and III, Banjo, Keyboard/Piano I and II, Introduction to Sound Mixing, How to Jam (Improv), and Inside the Music Business. “With instructors like Shelby Eicher and Jana Jae, you will receive the absolute best training for a great price,” Overcash says. “Most of our music classes are less than $12 per session, while private instruction usually runs around $50 per hour.” Most of NTC’s sessions are 12 weeks. “These are ridiculously low prices for top-notch lessons from professionals,” adds Overcash. “This is truly a labor of love for them and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people in
northeastern Oklahoma to train with these talented instructors.” Besides Eicher, who teaches mandolin, fiddle and music theory, and Jae, a world-renowned fiddle player, other instructors include Ray Bingham, who has actively managed, produced and booked acts for over 50 years; Rick Morton, who teaches mandolin, fiddle and music theory and has years of experience as a professional musician; Spencer Sutton, who currently plays with Bob Wills Texas Playboys; Danny McBride, who currently plays with the Tulsa Playboys; Phillip Bostic, who teaches banjo and mandolin; and Scott Schmidt, who teaches mandolin. “The Roy Clark Music School is a great opportunity that I wish I had access to as I was growing up learning to play music,” says Eicher, who spent 10 years on “Hee Haw” and 15 years in the Roy Clark Band. The NTC campus is located at 1901 N. Hwy. 88 in Claremore, just north of Rogers State University. “You don’t have to live in Rogers County to attend classes here,” Overcash adds. “We have people who drive from all over northeastern Oklahoma as well as from Joplin
Jana Jae, world-renowned fiddler, Roy Clark, a living legend in the music industry, and Claremore Chamber President Dell Davis were on hand earlier this year for the ribbon cutting for the Roy Clark Music School at the Northeast Technology Center in Claremore.
and Arkansas.” Spring classes at the Roy Clark Music School are now enrolling. Call Northeast Technology Center’s Claremore campus at (918) 342-8066 or go to their website at www.netech.edu for more information.

FFelts Is a Step Ahead From designer boots to athletic shoes, Felts Shoes in the Ne-Mar Shopping Center has something for everyone on your Christmas list. By Cassie Woods In keeping with its mission of providing great customer service, Felts Shoes is excited to offer several great Christmas options for another holiday season. The local, family-owned business is a staple in the Ne-Mar Shopping Center in Claremore. The staff at Felts Shoes understands the value of service in creating a loyal customer base and is honored to be able to support the community in which they have operated for the past 15 years. “We pride ourselves in offering great service and products to the families of Claremore and Rogers County,” said Tabitha Felts, owner of Felts Shoes. “We want people to be happy with their purchase so they keep coming back. And this year, we have some great options to make their Christmas shopping easy.” Tabitha and her staff offer personalized service to help you find not only the perfect shoe, but also the perfect fit for your foot. Common foot problems such as corns and bunions, as well as more severe issues like knee, ankle and back pain, can often be traced back to an
incorrectly-fitted shoe. Instead of being forced to make an assumption, Felts Shoes customers are offered a professional measurement of their foot to get a correct size. Felts Shoes has a very wide selection of quality, name-brand footwear. The highlight of this holiday season is their large selection of new UGGs, starting at $100 for a pair of comfortable house shoes, with the boots going up from there. Sperry is also a very popular brand for men, women and children. And don’t forget about a new pair of athletic shoes for the runner on your list. Nike, Saucony, Puma, New Balance and Reebok are some of their more popular athletic brands. Felts Shoes also carries DC and Vans for skate. Whatever style or purpose you’re looking for, Felts Shoes has a high-quality option for you. “Many people buy cheap shoes in order to save money for other clothing items and accessories, yet their shoes are the one item in their closet they wear every day,” said Tabitha. “Because what bothers your feet
will bother your whole body, we advise our customers to consider investing a little extra to get a high-quality shoe.” In addition to great, name-brand shoes, Felts also carries accessories such as insoles and shoe strings. And new this season, they have started carrying UGG purses. So for the lady on your list who already has the boots she loves, starting at $145, you can consider giving her that perfect purse to complete her look. Felts Shoes is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can browse online by searching “Felts ShoesClaremore” on Facebook. Tabitha always posts upcoming sale information as well as pictures of her current stock of product. Additionally, if you are looking for a specific item or size that may not be in stock, the staff at Felts Shoes is happy to special order for you. For added convenience to its customers, Felts Shoes also has a year-round layaway plan. With 25 percent down and a payment
Tabitha Felts, owner of Felts Shoes in Claremore, shows some of the best-selling UGG boots available at her store. every 30 days, layaway may be a good option for some families. “If nothing else, layaway is a great hiding place for your Christmas gifts,” said Tabitha. “One of the many perks of doing business with a small, familyowned store.”

Welcome to a Winter Wonderland Surceé Home Décor & Gifts offers everything you need to decorate for the holidays and please everyone on your Christmas shopping list.
By Lorrie Ward Surceé in Owasso recently announced its expansion—and now it will celebrate its first Christmas in its new and improved space, creating a perfect arena for this year’s main holiday theme: “Winter Wonderland.”
“Our expansion allowed room for six Christmas themes total,” says Laura Sanders, Surceé owner. “We have wreaths, ornaments, yard décor, garlands – just about anything you need to decorate for the holidays.”
With its floor space doubled, Surceé can now carry a bigger selection of everything: jewelry, boutique items, candles, home décor items (lamps, furniture, pictures), designer bags, designer stationary, sports team themed items (OU, OSU,
Owner Laura Sanders in the Winter Wonderland display at Surceé.

Owasso), home decorating and cooking books, custom ordered furnishings and more. This year, Surceé will host a special space for gift items priced $25 or less. As always, gift wrapping is always free, no matter what the price of the gift. Also expanding just in time for Christmas at Surceé – the Brighton Jewelry line. “Brighton is launching a new line of jewelry, and we have been selected as one of a limited number of stores who will be carrying it,” says Laura. The line, “My Flat in London,” is a re-launch of a jewelry line once carried in high-end stores like Neiman Marcus, Barneys and Nordstrom. Brighton Representative Kristie Stretch describes it as “a sophisticated, feminine and classic line of jewelry.” Brighton Jewelry is just one of the many things that are sure to make a Surceé customer’s “Wish List,” which is another service offered every holiday by Surceé. “Customers can come in, shop, and fill out their lists,” says Laura, “and we will either contact their loved ones with the list or have it available when they come by, according to what the customer requests.” Laura reports that this year, Surceé will host a “Dad and Kids Day” on December 16 so that fathers and children can come in together and have fun shopping for Mom, with yummy treats on hand and a special Christmas guest available to help them make their choices. If you need gifts for your office or corporation, Surceé is
Page 23
available to help grant those wishes, with great all-around gift choices like Tyler Candles (Surceé is the only dealer in the area for this popular candle line), Wind in Willow Food products (cheese ball kits, soup, dip and cider mixes), Elaine’s Toffee, and an array of lotion and perfume products. “Just call us and let us know about your group and what your budget is,” says Laura, “and we will be happy to help you put the perfect gifts together.” Laura also notes that many people buy gifts for their children’s teachers at Surceé, with its wide selection of personalized products such as ribbon pads and desk accessories. And if you are not sure what to purchase in either of these cases, Surceé gift cards are a great option. So whether you have a specific item in mind, need help finding that perfect gift, or even if you want to give a delightful day of shopping via a gift card for your loved one, be sure to drop by and make this original Owasso creation part of your holiday tradition. Store hours through Christmas are Monday through Friday 10 to 6, Saturday 10 to 5, and Sunday 1 to 5.

WWe Salute You Mazzio’s recently donated a percentage of their sales to the Folds of Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service. By Sheryl Sowell In 2011, Mazzio’s Italian Eatery celebrated 50 years in business. According to Greg Lippert, president and CEO, the company has about 1,900 employees in the Tulsa area, many of whom have served in the armed forces. As part of their 50th anniversary, Mazzio’s chose to honor these employees by inviting Major Dan Rooney, founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, to speak to the company. In addition, Mazzio’s donated a percentage of each pizza sale to the Folds of Honor Foundation, beginning in mid-June of this year and lasting through August. Mazzio’s was proud to present the foundation with a check for $10,000. Major Dan Rooney founded the Folds of Honor Foundation to ensure that no family is left behind in the fight to preserve American freedom. Scholarships and other forms of assistance are given to the spouses or children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to the United States. The Selbys, family of Mazzio’s founder Ken Selby, presented the $10,000 check along with Mazzio’s manager
Mike Solak, who served three tours of duty in Iraq, to Major Dan Rooney. “We are very pleased to be able to support such a
worthwhile cause,” said Lippert. “Too often we hear the news of men and women who have lost their lives serving our country. This organization is invaluable in
helping these soldiers’ families find healing, hope and opportunity through scholarships and other assistance.” The Folds of Honor
Page 25
Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. After returning from his second tour, Major Rooney witnessed a profound situation that drove him to create the Folds of Honor Foundation. According to the Folds of Honor website, over 700,000 soldiers have been killed or disabled in the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 87 percent of the dependents affected by the recent wars do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance, meaning that over a million Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn dependents need assistance. For more information, visit www.foldsofhonor.org. Lippert says that Mazzio’s has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from both employees of the company as well as customers in their support of this incredible organization. “Everyone is very connected to the cause, and Mazzio’s is proud to be a part of it.”

They extend the well-known Bill Knight motto “Service You Can Trust” to every customer, and will not be trying to sell you anything your vehicle doesn’t need. According to Mr. Knight, “We’ve added another valuable service for our customers who asked us for a quick-service solution where they could bring their vehicles and wait while the
car received simple maintenance. Our first Quick Lane is located just east of Memorial on 41st Street and has proven to be a positive experience for customers looking for competitively priced products and services.” Both locations are equipped to provide services for Ford, Lincoln, or any other make or model car, truck or SUV. Not only does Quick Lane
stock more than 250 tires, but they offer a “meet-or-beat” guarantee that assures you that you’re purchasing your new tires at the best price offered in town. Chad and Kate will also help you get the most out of your tires by providing some simple maintenance tips that could improve gas mileage and help keep you and your family safer when you’re traveling. “We’re going to recommend the right tire for your vehicle at the best price,” said Chad. “Each time you bring your car in for service, it will get a free vehicle inspection that will provide you with a report depicting the current health of your car,” added Kate. The report includes a visual tire inspection for proper inflation and wear, a brake inspection and brake fluid check, inspection of all other fluids, and other under-the-hood and under-the-car visual inspections. A copy of the Vehicle Check-Up Report will be provided to you with all inspected items noted as good, fair or bad. You’ll know if a problem exists, and if it needs immediate attention or if it can go a while longer. You’ll feel relieved when your car gets a report card indicating that all is
in good and safe working order. "2012 will be the fourth consecutive year that our team will finish as the number one volume Ford dealer in Oklahoma. Our customer base continues to grow and this is a great additional service for them," said Bill. He adds that Bill Knight Ford understands the importance of being available even after the sale. Quick Lane Tire & Auto Centers are one of the many ways Bill Knight Ford continues to provide value-added services for their customers. Store hours for the new Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Quick Lane is closed Sundays. It’s About Life hardships he faced.” Cindy adds, “Life Story videos capture a person’s life. They tell a story. They preserve a memory. They touch your heart.” How does one create a Life Story video? According to Jim, when someone comes in to pre-arrange his or her funeral, “We will not only talk about what they want for their services, but we will interview them about their life, asking them what they would like to share with their loved ones. We will be taping the interview but discretely enough that they won’t focus on the fact that they are being taped. The beauty of this is that they can open up and share a part of themselves that can be preserved forever.” While many may choose not to show it at the deceased one’s services, the free
keepsake will still be treasured by generations to follow. “Many times we say we are going to preserve our stories,” says Cindy, “but we never seem to get around to it. We can help families get that done when they pre-arrange their services with us. We all face the inevitable. We are all going to die someday, and memories are the one thing we leave behind that will continue to go on living.” While pre-arranging a funeral is not always something we consider or even want to do, Jim points out the benefits. “When someone passes away, their loved ones are experiencing a variety of emotions, from grief to anger. You usually only have three days to plan the services, and many decisions must be made. While we can help with those decisions, there are so many
options that it can sometimes be overwhelming. By pre-arranging your services, you relieve your loved ones of that burden. Cindy and I have both pre-arranged our funerals.” MMS, the oldest funeral home in the county, has continued to offer more options for individuals and families, including many that are free, to assist people in their end-of-life decisions. MMS also owns and operates the only crematory in the county. Another resource provided at MMS is through Frank Friedemann, director of family services. Friedemann helps families navigate the paperwork following a loved one’s death, including insurance policies, Social Security information, death certificates and any other issues that
someone might have to deal with after a death. These services will help you get organized and are provided at no additional charge. “We will help you through the whole process from start to finish,” Jim adds. When you pre-arrange services, it alleviates some of the confusion associated with this time in all of our lives. And, by preserving memories on video, loved ones are given a glimpse of your life. Eye Problems in Your Child’s Sight
A House Full of Yarn
continued from page 1 first-grade students have never received any type of eye exam. It should come as no surprise, then, that 60 percent of “problem learners” have vision problems that go undetected. “Eye exams for children entering school are critical for early intervention,” says Dr. Hinkle of Primary Eye Care Associates of Owasso. “This is needed to treat diseases and disorders that can lead to poor school performance and can ultimately affect a child’s quality of life.” According to Dr. Hinkle and his colleague Dr. Cash, there are certain telltale signs a child may be experiencing vision difficulty. Are his eyes or eyelids noticeably red? Does the child rub his eyes a lot or complain of frequent headaches? Does he turn or tilt the head as if trying to focus with just one eye? Does he avoid tasks that would require a lot of visual focus, such as coloring and reading, or hand-eye coordinated activities, such as doing puzzles? If the answer to these questions is “yes,” then the child most certainly needs an eye exam. One might ask, “But aren’t
Knitting Classes New Projects Every Month!
there routine vision screenings at every school?” According to studies cited by the AOA, these screenings are designed to detect potential issues, but are not comprehensive enough and are not diagnostic. “Vision screening programs that are well-designed and properly administered in the public or private schools should be utilized to assist in the identification of children in need of care who have not had access to comprehensive examination services,” states the AOA. Vision screenings are only used to test visual acuity, while a comprehensive eye exam given by optometrists involves assessment and possible treatment of this and other problems involving binocular vision, refractive status, oculomotility, and general ocular health. The AOA also recommends assessments begin at age three, rather than waiting until the child enters school. Shelley Moody, office manager of Owasso’s Primary Eye Care Associates, provides a perfect example of the importance of early eye examination in children. “My sister couldn’t see well from the time she was born, and in school she was moved to
the front of the class – where she still couldn’t see,” she recounts. “When she finally got her first pair of glasses, she told our mother she was amazed that those things on the trees were leaves and not green cotton balls!” Shelly goes on to explain that it is so important that parents and optometrists work together on behalf of the child because, like her sister, a child does not actually realize for herself that she is not seeing properly. “Children who start out with poor vision don’t have anything to compare things to,” she explains. “They only know what they are born with.” To schedule an eye exam for your child or yourself, contact one of the fine optometrists with any area Primary Eye Care Associates, located in Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Owasso and Sand Springs.

The 2013 also includes larger fuel tanks, more traditional styling, and a new dash. Tundra is designed to meet all the off-road requirements. This is a remarkably nice truck in every department. RSU Senior Wins National Broadcasting Award Congratulations to Gary “Turbo” Webb, who was honored by the College Music Journal for his show Metal Meltdown on RSU Radio.
By David Hamby Gary “Turbo” Webb, a Rogers State University communications senior from Verdigris, was named “Specialty Music Director of the Year” during the College Music Journal awards for college radio stations in North America. Webb received the award during an October 18th ceremony in New York City, beating out station directors from Seton Hall University in Seton Hall, NJ; Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; and Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. Webb, who has been with the station for the past four years, specializes in metal music, hosting the Metal Meltdown show on Tuesday nights from 8 p.m. to midnight and the Midnight Metal Meltdown on Wednesday nights from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Webb said the award was very important to his career in broadcasting. “Winning the CMJ award is the final stamp and culmination of a lot of hard work that I have put into chasing the proverbial pipe dream of ‘making it’ in radio, particularly metal radio,” he said. “Being recognized by CMJ is not only
huge for me, but also gives RSU Radio some much deserved press. KRSC is the whole reason I decided to attend RSU. Moving forward, I would hope that the award allows me to me land a job doing what I love, which of course is being a radio personality.” Webb acknowledged the mentoring he received from RSU Radio General Manager Cathy Coomer and Steve Doyle, operations manager, for helping him pursue his dream. Honors for his broadcasting work are nothing new for Webb, who was recognized in 2011 with a Gene Dillehay scholarship from OETA, presented to Oklahoma’s most outstanding broadcast students. He also has earned three awards in the annual Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association student competitions, including two second-place awards in the “Radio Personality Air Check” and one first place for “Magazine/Talk Radio” for an interview with musician Rob Zombie. Webb will complete his RSU career this spring by serving an internship with The Syndicate,
an independent marketing and consulting agency in the New York City metro area. Following that, he is eyeing an internship opportunity with XM/Sirius Radio that will further help propel him along his dream of a radio career. Coomer said, “I am so thrilled for Gary and for all his accomplishments he has fulfilled while attending college. This award just reinforces what we already knew and what future employers will learn about Gary's ambitions, his talent and career goals.” The College Music Journal is an integrated marketing agency specializing in providing its clients access to the college and young adult demographic in the music world. CMJ also connects music fans with the industry with the best in new music through interactive media, live events and print. RSU Radio 91.3 reports to the CMJ weekly with information on what the station is playing and is requested in the genres of alternative music, electronic dance, metal and world. Webb and Garrett Powders,
Gary “Turbo” Webb of RSU Radio, winner of “Specialty Music Director of the Year” at the College Music Journal awards. a senior communications major from Tulsa, attended the awards ceremony and industry conference. Powders was a nominee in the Best Newcomer category. The station itself was nominated in the “Most Improved” category. Nominations were submitted by the stations and industry that make up the CMJ radio community. RSU Radio is a primarily student-run radio station on the RSU campus in Claremore. The
station went on the air in 1980 and continues to operate year-round, 24 hours a day. The station is licensed as KRSC and can be found at 91.3 FM. For more information on RSU Radio, visit www.rsuradio.com. For more information, contact

GGo Cajun for Christmas Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats offers a variety of fresh meat, sides and desserts for your holiday dinner, including the world-famous Cajun turducken. By Sheryl Sowell When it comes to food, friends, family and festivities, nobody does it like the Cajuns. For holiday celebrations, there’s one place in Tulsa where you’re guaranteed to find this passion for amazing food and zest for life – Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats at 2101 E. 71st St., just west of 71st and Lewis in the big red house. A perfect option for the holidays is the turducken. For those who aren’t familiar with this Cajun delight, turducken is a deboned turkey, stuffed with a deboned duck, stuffed with a deboned chicken. All crevices are filled with pork sausage stuffing and cornbread dressing. The rich flavor far surpasses traditional turkey, with no dry meat. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s offers four varieties: along with the traditional turducken, they have a pork-free turducken with chicken sausage, another with chicken jalapeno sausage, and a special “turken” with two chickens, a turkey and no duck. In addition to turducken, other popular choices for the holidays include deboned chicken, whole beef tenderloin, duck and boneless turkey, as well
Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats owner Cajun Ed Richard shows some delectable holiday meal options available, including turducken, standing rib, spiral sliced ham, corn maque choux and a variety of mouthwatering desserts. as boneless turkey breast stuffed with turducken sausage and three varieties of ham – spiralsliced ham, honey-glazed ham
and Cajun honey-glazed ham. Side dish favorites include broccoli cheese casserole, green beans with new potatoes and
bacon, corn maque choux, rice dressing, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole, and new this year, andouille cornbread dressing. Owner Ed “Cajun Ed” Richard explains what makes their authentic Cajun food so special: many of the ingredients and seasonings come from Louisiana, and the meat is fresh – the best of the best. “The timely combination of cooking and seasonings creates the authentic Cajun flavor, which was previously found only in south Louisiana,” says Cajun Ed. These wonderful seasonings are all available in the largest Cajun retail space in Tulsa. To top off your meal, choose from a variety of made-fromscratch desserts – bread pudding, bourbon pecan pie, key lime pie, chocolate ganache peanut butter pie, traditional and chocolate pralines, and carrot cake. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s also carries gift cards and online gift certificates, music, and lots of Louisiana cookbooks that range from general to specific Cajun cooking. Gift boxes for steaks, chops or whatever meat you want to present are available as
well. Keep this in mind for a hostess gift that is sure to be appreciated! Jeremy Singer has recently joined the Cajun Ed’s team as general manager. With over 10 years of experience in the food industry, Jeremy is helping to expand the business and bless more Tulsans with the taste and spirit of the Cajuns. With the help of his new right-hand man, Cajun Ed is expanding beyond the noteworthy meat market and restaurant. They are now catering parties, large or small, gourmet or down home. “If you can dream it, we can make it. It doesn’t matter if you are serving 5 or 500. We can get the job done,” says Jeremy. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats, home of the world-famous turducken, is open Monday through Saturday, with lunch and dinner served each day. Look for the big red house with the rocking chairs on the front porch just west of 71st and Lewis. Don’t wait to place your holiday order for meats, side dishes and desserts. HHip, Hip, Hurray! Janean McCorkle of Broken Arrow is shouting the praises of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ron LaButti. By Joshua Danker-Dake Janean McCorkle of Broken Arrow was born in 1956 with congenital hip dislocation: her hip socket hadn’t formed correctly, so her hip bone would slide back and forth. Unable to crawl as an infant, Janean spent two years in a splint. In 2002, Janean’s knee gave out and she fell down a flight of stairs. Over the next seven years, she developed increasing pain in her right thigh and a severe limp. One of her friends had undergone knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald LaButti years before, and Janean went to him on the basis of that glowing recommendation. “Dr. LaButti ordered hip X-rays, which showed that I was bone-on-bone in my right hip,” says Janean. “He had me get a steroid injection in my right hip to see if I was a good candidate for hip replacement. That one shot took all my pain away instantly.” After the shot, Janean experienced substantially less pain, she says, and she underwent hip replacement surgery on her hip in April, 2010. “My hip
was a mess when Dr. LaButti did the operation. Bone grafting had to be done. After the surgery, I had six weeks of recuperation and then four weeks of physical therapy. Dr. LaButti had done such a good job that my physical therapist was amazed at how well I was doing. I had his notes sent to my therapist, and she said that in all her years, she had never seen such meticulous notes.” Later, arthritis caused Janean’s left hip to deteriorate, causing her thigh pain. She went back to Dr. LaButti, and in June of 2012, she had her left hip replaced. “The left wasn’t as bad as my right, and I bounced right back after the surgery, with no therapy needed,” she says. “I went back to work in just three weeks, and after both surgeries, I needed very little pain medication.” Janean is effusive in her praise for Dr. LaButti. “He gave me my life back,” she says. “I didn’t think it was possible to feel this good again. I know why people come from out of state to see him – his talent, his knowledge of new technology,
and his compassion for his patients and their families. I’ve recommended him to many people.” Janean calls herself Dr. LaButti’s poster child for total hip replacement. “I wish my mother-in-law could have gone to Dr. LaButti – she had both hips done, and after the second, she said, ‘Never again.’ She lived with post-operative pain until the day she died,” says Janean. “But Dr. LaButti is amazing – no one has to endure hip or knee pain when he’s right here in Tulsa. Dr. LaButti and his staff made me feel like myself again, and I’m eternally grateful to all of them.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com. HHoney-Kissed Ham for the Holidays What could beat a delicious honey-kissed ham (or smoked turkey) from The Hamlet for your Christmas dinner? By Lorrie Ward When you hear the word “hamlet,” you may think of an idyllic village with cozy, thatched cottages set in a medieval countryside. Or you may think of the famous Shakespeare play by the same name. But chances
are if you are from the Tulsa area, when you hear “The Hamlet,” you automatically think of “honey-kissed” ham or smoked turkey, perfect for any Christmas feast. The Hamlet still prepares
the hams that made them famous, and the also they offer so much more for the holidays. Crystal Vivion, who operates the two Tulsa Hamlet locations with her sister, owner Shannon Hester, and her father, Gordon Pendergraft, points out that many wonderful products can combine with a Hamlet ham or turkey to make a perfect gift. “A Hamlet ham gift basket typically consists of a ham or center cut, along with chipotle sauce, cream cheese and crackers, and a gourmet jelly,” she says. “We custom build these baskets according to your price point.” Delivery and shipping are available for both hams and ham baskets. Other types of gift baskets can be built at The Hamlet as well, using any of the wide range of fine gourmet products available: Funky Chunky Popcorn (regular, sea salt, candy cane and caramel), Stonewall Kitchen, Robert Rothchild’s Farm, My Dad’s Salsa, Bellini Mixers, Laredo’s Bloody Mary Mixers, Southbend Chocolate Candied Popcorn, and much more. The Hamlet displays several shelves of Stonewall Kitchen gift boxes, featuring
Crystal Vivion and her son.

choices such as Blueberry Breakfast, which includes pancake and waffle mix, Wild Maine Blueberry syrup and jam, and a holiday tea towel – all wrapped up in a lovely gift box and ready to put under the tree. Cooks in the crowd will also want to check out another of Crystal’s favorite products: Stonewall Kitchen’s Pies in a Jar, which come in a wide variety of flavors, from apple to cherry to pumpkin, and can either be placed right into the pie shell or only require minimal, perishable ingredients before cooking. Pies in a Jar also make great ice cream toppings. For the holiday, Crystal especially recommends the Pecan or Chocolate Pecan, which only require the addition of eggs – taking much of the work out of a flavorful but normally labor-intensive holiday classic. Also for pie lovers: The Hamlet offers gift boxes from Plentiful Pantry, complete with decorative pie plate and pie mix, ready to wrap up for that person who loves to bake. Any of the fine products available at The Hamlet make perfect single item gifts as well for your holiday office party, for
which The Hamlet can provide a tasty box lunch or deli tray using the finest Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. Boar’s Head is famous not only for its flavor, but for its commitment to providing excellent deli products that are gluten-free, nitrate-free, and as preservative-free as possible. With a 24-hour notice, The Hamlet can have your party spread ready and waiting, taking a large part of the labor and worry out of the process for the party planner. And that is really what holidays at The Hamlet are all about. “We try to take on some of the stress,” says Crystal, “So that everyone can better enjoy their holiday.”
