By Carol Beck-Round Imagine a two-lane highway with two busloads of community members headed in the same direction. The destination sign ahead reads, “Rogers County, where substance abuse does not exist!” The first bus sports a sign reading “Healthy Community Partnership.” The bus driver is Certified Prevention Specialist Trisha DeLozier. Passengers on DeLozier’s bus represent members of the Healthy Community Partnership, including people from all walks of life and representing diverse sectors of the population (i.e., school administrators, teenagers, law enforcement officers, members of the clergy, parents, business professionals, media
representatives, youth-serving organization leaders, civic group members and healthcare professionals). Seated on the bus are also members of an HCP committee called the “RX Task Force.” The bus cargo hold contains suitcases representing projects and initiatives designed to battle the problem of prescription drug misuse among youth and across the lifespan in Rogers County. Driving another bus alongside the HCP vehicle is Alyson Short, Volunteers for Youth’s Drug Free Communities project director, with the help of her co-worker/navigator Amy Graham (prevention specialist). ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY
Beginning With The End In Mind BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
I was blessed this past year with the honor of sitting at the bedside of one of my very first clients while I assisted him and his wife with arranging for hospice. These are long term clients and we have walked quite a long journey together. Many, many years ago this couple came in to see me with the little money they had saved. They told me their hopes and dreams for when they retired. We came up with a plan. Over the years they have developed their wealth the old fashioned way. They worked hard, kept their expenses low, saved a lot, got laid off, changed jobs, rolled over pensions, and 401k’s. Life didn’t always go as planned. We adjusted our plan to accommodate life. A few years ago we worked with an estate planning attorney to develop a trust, a living will, a power of attorney, a health care directive.
moment and then cried for a few. “ I want you to promise me that you will help Mary figure out all of the financial stuff and I want you to make sure she takes the next step and holds on to the things we had dreamed” he said, and I promised I would. Sometimes things work out exactly as we planned. Sometimes God has a different plan. In the end, you will want to know, that no matter what, your loved ones can go on and that you have taken care of them. A life well lived…beginning with the end in mind. And tomorrow, I begin again…with Mary. I am so very grateful that I get to do what I do and help people along this journey. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. They bit the bullet and invested in a joint long-term care policy. Finally, they retired. Within a couple of months of retiring, Chuck was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As I walked down the hall of the hospital to his room, I couldn’t help but think about all of the sacrifices they had made and all the planning we had done. As I entered his room, he recognized me and said “Melanie, this is not what we had planned!” I said “I know. We’ve got to get back on track!” We laughed for a

Cotton Cottage in Claremore can help with New Year’s resolutions to finish those sewing projects in your craft room.
By Cassie Woods In August of last year, Jan Bemies decided to turn a longtime hobby into a business when she opened Claremore’s only specialty fabric store, on the corner of Blue Starr Drive and Davis Avenue. The semi-retired child care administrator and her daughter-in-law, Tammy Bemies, had been discussing starting the venture for a while. While driving around Claremore one day after dropping her children off at Claremore Christian School, Tammy found the little white house now referred to as the Cotton Cottage. “We have been very lucky,” said Jan. “The owners of the property were phenomenal during the start-up process. They completed all the upgrades we needed and helped with the remodel of the house. They truly were instrumental in helping get the place open for business.” And since they opened five months ago, they haven’t stopped going. Jan and Tammy are continually looking for ways to offer their customers personalized service. “We make a great team because we work so well together and balance each other out,” said Jan. “I do all the quilting, and Tammy handles the garments

and décor. She has a wonderful eye for color and is very creative.” Stacked floor to ceiling, Cotton Cottage has a very large selection of quality, name-brand fabrics. Some of their most popular brands include Red Rooster, Amy Butler, Free Spirit, Blue Hill, Hoffman and RJR. As the store’s name suggests, all of their fabrics are 100 percent cotton, and they carry a wide range of colors and styles including solids, prints, florals and children’s designs. They also carry some unique character prints such as Route 66 and John Deere. If you are looking for a specific color or design that may not be in stock, the staff at Cotton Cottage can special order based on supplier availability. In addition to great, brandname quilting and dress fabrics, Cotton Cottage also sells laminated cotton that can be used for making waterproof creations like raincoats, bags and lunch bags. They also have a good line of flannels in stock and carry patterns, notions and fat quarters. “If you’re a quilter, you know what fat quarters are and we have a great selection at a good price,” said Jan. “All of our fat quarters are high quality and
all are priced at $1.99.” The Cotton Cottage is also home to a long-arm quilting machine. If a customer creates the quilt and needs to have it sandwiched together, they can have it done in house starting at one cent per inch plus a $10 set up fee. They also do a little bit of specialized embroidery and can create some garments. “We want to get the word out – whether you want to make a nice garment or complete a large-scale quilting project, we can help you,” said Jan. “As we grow, we will continue to add services that cater to the needs of our customers, and we look forward to growing this business and establishing a good customer base by providing quality products and customer service.” Cotton Cottage is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

SSpeaking with Faith
Christian author Carol Round encourages women in their personal and spiritual growth through group events.
By Lorrie Ward Christian author Carol Round always tells people, “If you had told me when I was younger that I would be speaking in front of large groups of my peers, I would have replied, 'I don't think so!'” The only ‘C’ Carol ever made in college was in speech class. “I was so nervous, I would grip the podium with sweating hands. So I tell people now, ‘God really does have a sense of humor.’” No one is more surprised than Carol when she looks over the events of the last year and realizes that she has not only spoken on several occasions in front of large groups of women, but has been interviewed on numerous radio stations across the U.S. and appeared on Christian television programs, including stations in Atlanta, Georgia and Santa Fe, New Mexico. "When I first received requests to speak, I was nervous and wasn't sure I could do it," says Carol. "However, my pastor said, 'Carol, God doesn't call the equipped; he equips the called.' He was telling me to trust God and keep my eyes on Him." Carol’s speaking topics are based on her writing, which, unlike speaking, she has always
been completely comfortable with because she has loved to read and write since she was a little girl. Her first speaking engagement came about in 2007 when she was asked to speak to a local church group in response to her self-syndicated column, “A Matter of Faith,” which runs in 12 Oklahoma newspapers (including “Claremore Daily Progress”) and is featured in an internationally-read online newspaper. She began doing small group sessions on the topic of prayer journaling and was asked at every session, “Do you have a book?” With writing as her first love, Carol did not have to be urged very strongly to produce what her listeners were asking for: "Journaling with Jesus: How to Draw Closer to God." After receiving more requests to speak, she published a companion workbook to help women put the principles learned in "Journaling with Jesus" to practical use for themselves. Her workbook, "The 40Day Challenge," is her fourth book. She has also authored "A Matter of Faith" and "Faith Matters," both compilations of her weekly column, which can be
used as daily devotionals. Her fifth book, "by FAITH alone," another collection of her columns, was released in November. With these completed projects under her belt, Carol has received even more requests to speak at women’s events, and her audiences continue to grow in size. Her topics are designed to aid women in their personal and spiritual growth, with such seminar titles as “Journaling with Jesus,” “Perfecting your Personality,” and “Sharing your Faith Story.” Carol often incorporates humor into her writing and speaking, which is evidenced by other speech titles: “Are You a Worry Wart?,” “I’m not Martha Stewart,” and “Don’t Look at Your Butt in the Dressing Room Mirror.” “I want to encourage other women,” says Carol. "We live in a broken, confusing world. If we allow the media to dominate our lives with all the negative news, we could easily just give up." This call to encourage others was what helped Carol to not only overcome her fear of speaking to her peers, but to actually enjoy the experience.
Author and speaker Carol Round. “We all have a story to share of what God is doing in our lives, and we need to be sharing that story with others, including our children and grandchildren," says Carol. “When God opens the door for us, we need to walk through it. For me, that open door is when God called me to start speaking.” To find out more about Carol Round and her ministry, visit her on Facebook or at her blog, www.carolaround.com. HHelp Finding the Right Homes for Seniors Assisted Transition provides free senior living and referral services for the greater Tulsa area. By Sheryl Sowell Do you have an elderly loved one – perhaps your mother, father or a grandparent – whose current home is no longer the best place to live? The reasons for needing to transition into an independent living community, residential care home, assisted living facility or nursing home are vast and may include declining physical or mental health, lack of a support system available in case of emergency, or inability to take care of home maintenance needs. “Many people realize, ‘This is what we need to do,’ but they’re unsure exactly how to go about it,” says Michelle Brown, co-owner of Assisted Transition with Mark Smith. “Our services are geared toward families that have planned ahead and are prepared for the change, but need help in finding the right home for their loved one.” Assisted Transition offers free senior living placement and referral services for the greater Tulsa area. “We are able to assist families in finding the right assisted living community, independent living community, residential care home, nursing home, home care provider, or memory support/Alzheimer’s
community for their loved one’s needs,” explains Michelle, a registered nurse with a specialty in home health. “We are also able to help find the right respite short-term stay and hospice care.” All services are provided at no cost. A meeting is scheduled between either Michelle or Mark and the senior and their family, either at the Assisted Transition office or at the person’s home. “We assess their situation and match their needs and wants with what is available in the community,” says Michelle. “Factors may include price, geographic location, services available, environment of the facility, and much more. As a registered nurse for 28 years, I am also able to read between the lines and provide insight into the senior’s needs that the family may not be aware of.” After the initial meeting to establish the senior’s needs and preferences, Mark or Michelle will narrow down the choices available and personally tour and evaluate the facilities. Upon determining the best options available, they will personally drive the senior and family to
the best matched locations for a guided tour. Once a selection has been made and the person moved to the right facility, they follow up to ensure that all expectations have been met. Co-owner Mark Smith wishes he’d had access to this service when it was time for his father, who had Alzheimer’s disease, to move out of his home. “He was a wanderer, and we unknowingly placed him in a home that was not able to care for his needs. He was only there for a very short time before we had to move him again. In addition to the distress, we were out several thousand dollars. If I had been given some advice like Assisted Transition offers, this situation could have been avoided.” Assisted Transition also works with the VA to assist veterans in making sure they receive their full benefits. This service is especially close to Mark’s heart, as he is a veteran of the Aviation Branch of the United States Army. Michelle and Mark truly care about seniors in our community and want to provide families the resources they need to make the transition as

M Money Boo-Boos and How to Correct Them Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Jocelyn Wood Get a handle on your finances in 2013. Are you wasting money? We’ve compiled a list of money boo-boos that could be costing you your hard-earned money. RCB Bank loan officers Matt Streeter and Michelle Miller offer their advice on how to correct the mistakes. 1. Not making a budget – or attempting to stay near it. Sit down and really look at your monthly expenses, Miller suggests. Where might you be able to cut? Just looking at where your money actually goes is a great tool to saving. “That $1.50 coffee doesn’t seem like a lot at the time until you realize cutting it can save $350 a year,” she says. 2. Not building an emergency fund – Any savings is better than no savings. Matt Streeter says your annual bonus, tax refund or a small amount each month is a great way to start. “You just have to start setting it aside,” he says. Miller adds, “It is easier to save if you have the money automatically deducted from your paycheck or main checking account.” 3. Not paying your credit cards off each month – “It’s like tossing your money out the
window,” Streeter says. “Money spent on interest charges and late fees can add up fast. After interest, how much did that sweater you bought with your credit card really cost?” 4. Living above your means – Carrying a balance on a credit card can become crippling if it gets out of hand. A better solution is to have a special account that you use for “extras,” says Miller. Make a pact with yourself to set aside a small amount every paycheck. “Ideally you save up the cash and you don’t need to use credit; however, no interest financing for large ticket items can be a good alternative. As long as you can pay it off in the free time allotted,” Miller says. 5. Impulse buying – “If you can’t give yourself a day to think about a purchase, that’s an impulse,” says Streeter. “Even worse, if you put that impulse buy on a credit card.” If you find yourself in this situation, back away and go home. 6. Not reviewing your insurance needs annually – or at least every two years. This includes auto, homeowners, life and others. “Your employer and
insurance companies review it each year, so why don’t you?” Streeter asks. Shop around occasionally to see if there’s a better deal. 7. Not having a retirement plan – “Everyone should start saving for retirement as early as possible,” says Miller. If your employer doesn’t have a 401k program, open an IRA. Even $10 a paycheck can add up over the years. 8. Housing expense exceeds 30% of your gross income – If your housing expenses are more than 30% of your gross income, you should consider scaling back, suggests Miller. “Today’s economy is tough, and if you exceed this ratio you are vulnerable to serious financial problems with any disruption of wages or family emergencies.” ADDITIONAL TIPS: Everyone makes bad money decisions from time to time. The key is to recognize them when they happen. Share your goals and concerns with family, or a friend. They may have a solution that worked for them that could also work for you. They can also help hold you

TTrust Matters These days who you trust matters. When clients come in for a meeting, they know they can trust Melanie, Ken, and Waterstone Private Wealth Management. By Duane Blankenship Melanie Hasty-Grant and Ken Grant own Waterstone Private Wealth Management, with offices in Owasso and at Utica Square in Tulsa. “With 20+ combined years of experience in the financial industry, we’ve been around the block more than once,” says Melanie. “We love what we do and are in the financial business for the long haul.” Clients know Waterstone has the experience and track record for understanding the market. “When clients meet with us, they have trust in us and what we do,” says Melanie.“ Those who place their trust in us know that we do the right things for the right reasons with no mixed loyalties. Our clients know we have a well thought-out plan and that we will be there for them through thick and thin.” Melanie and Ken enjoy their independence in the industry, but clear through LPL Financial, the largest independent broker/dealer in the country. “Because we are not employees of LPL Financial, we have no downward ‘sales pressure’ to sell clients something they do not
need,” said Melanie. They hold no inventory of “stuff” that they have to sell, and they have no proprietary products. This means they have access to all investments available on the market, and they customize plans
specifically to clients’ needs. “Clearing” through LPL Financial means that while being independent, Waterstone is also regulated by FINRA, have annual audits, and recordkeeping and statements are produced by

LPL Financial. Waterstone’s clients have the best of both worlds: having their money managed in a way that is solely in their best interest and having a large company standing behind them and their money. Ken and Melanie are frequent contributors to national television and radio shows such as CNBC’s “PowerLunch,” “Fox Business News,” “MarketWatch Radio” (broadcast from the New York Stock Exchange), and “The Wall Street Journal.” “The recent volatility in the markets have been a wakeup call for most investors that the rules have changed and they need someone they can trust to help guide them towards their financial goals,” said Ken. In today’s crazy market, the old “buy, hold, and hope” strategy is not an effective way to manage money, the Grants agree. Yesterday’s accepted school of practice was to buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. “This is still the mainstream school of thought,” said Melanie, “but the market has proven over the last 14 years that the philosophy is no longer effective. You now need much more.” Melanie refers to Waterstone’s overall strategy as “grow, preserve, protect.” “It’s a more tactical, active and protective way of managing money,” she explains. Melanie says that clients now need a “buy side” and a “sell side” strategy, a well thought-out plan and strategy to determine when and why they are buying an investment, and what they
Page 13
expect to accomplish. It’s not acceptable to just throw money in the market and hope for the best. Waterstone clients want and need strategies to help them meet goals for safety and security. We may call it “service,” but we now need something that goes way beyond that. We need someone who is going to be there for us to face whatever lies ahead. Melanie summarizes it perfectly: “When you get laid off, when your employer declares bankruptcy, when America goes through a recession and you’re scared, when you’re going through an ugly divorce and don’t know where to turn, when you get older and need help, when your spouse dies and you’re devastated, or when you are terminally ill and in hospice care – it’s during these times you need someone you can call at home, who will come to you wherever you are, who will stand with you in your grief or indecision, and who will be there for your spouse or children when you cannot. Waterstone will be your advocate, to help you think clearly and get things done. That's why trust truly matters. You are our client, not your money.”

LLarger Location for Fitness Time The women’s workout facility has a new, larger location and more amenities, with the same great monthly rate. By Carol Beck-Round With an additional 1,000 square feet, vaulted ceilings, a suspended wood floor in the aerobic room and other amenities, Fitness Time for Ladies is open for business in their new location at the North Park Medical Center located at the corner of Highway 66 North and Lowery Road. The new 5,000-square-foot gym – for women only – includes a much larger aerobic room with a little over 1,000 square feet to accommodate the growing demand for Zumba fitness classes, step and regular aerobics, yoga, and kickboxing. The former facility’s location did not allow room for growth, says Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, owner. “We had a lot of requests for a larger Zumba room, but we had no capability to grow at our former location.” A larger facility and room to grow were two reasons Dr. Hrdlicka cited for the move. “We also have many clients who live on this side of town in the Sequoyah area. This move provides a facility to meet the needs of the women in this area.” In addition to the increased space for classes, Fitness Time for Ladies now offers four
tanning beds and two showers and includes all-new audio and video surveillance equipment throughout the building. “We also have a children’s room available for mothers and a security system so that they can view their children on the closed circuit televisions while working out,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not, however, offer child care.” What sets Fitness Time for Ladies apart from other gyms in the Claremore area? Besides being for women only, the atmosphere is personal, private, clean and aesthetically pleasing. It is also an all-inclusive gym, which means that there are no extra charges for fitness classes or tanning. “Many gyms charge extra for their classes,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not. When you pay your monthly fee, you have full use of our facility, including tanning. You get the whole gym for the price of a tanning membership.” The all-inclusive membership, if paid monthly, is $49.05. However, if paid in advance, the membership fee is only $40 per month or $480 for a year. Rates have not increased, but the facility has more to offer in the way of space, additional
equipment and tanning beds. High school and college students are now eligible for a discount at $43.99 per month, which includes the full use of amenities. The upscale 24/7 women’s fitness center also offers a full line of aerobic exercise equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair steppers and elliptical machines, all outfitted with televisions. In addition to classes and aerobic equipment, Fitness Time for Ladies offers Nautilus strength training equipment as well as free weights to help club members get in tip-top shape. “For the women who get overwhelmed when they walk into a gym full of equipment, a personal trainer is available on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for a new member orientation session on all of the gym equipment,” he adds. “And it’s free.” What else is free? The all-inclusive gym includes use of the sauna and a massage chair. “When you compare Fitness Time to other gyms, you need to compare apples to apples,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “If you add up everything available at our gym, you will find that if you paid for
Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka (pictured) and Leslie Cohen, owners of Fitness Time for Ladies. them separately at others, we come out on top. In addition, we pride ourselves on having a clean gym. We are very particular about staying clean and keeping this place a personal, private atmosphere for our ladies. We want the gym to feel like it is an extension of their home.” Home for the relocated women’s gym is now next door to Mobility Plus and immediately behind Tulsa Teachers Credit Union. The
name and faces are the same; only the location has changed as Fitness Time for Ladies opens its doors to a brighter, larger facility to accommodate area women’s fitness needs.

Weight Loss Can Change Your Life W Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics offers weight loss surgeries for morbidly obese patients who suffer associated medical conditions due to their weight. By Sheryl Sowell Kathy Trevino had been overweight her entire life, from childhood throughout her teenage and adult years. When she had children in her late twenties, the pounds really began to pack on and her weight problem got worse and worse. By the time she was in her early forties, she weighed 262 pounds at 5’ 4”. “I had severe chronic pain in my lower back, and my physician told me that if I didn’t do something about my weight, I would be in a wheelchair by the age of 50,” says Kathy. One of Kathy’s coworkers suggested she look into weight loss surgery, and that her insurance might pay for it because it was causing her back pain. Kathy checked with her insurance company and was referred to Dr. Luis Gorospe at Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics. “I had heard about Lap-Band surgery with celebrities like Al Roker, and found out that it is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time than other weight loss surgeries. I went to Dr. Gorospe’s seminar and decided I had to nothing to lose,” says Kathy. In December of 2007, Dr. Gorospe performed Lap-Band
Kathy Trevino before and after Lap-Band surgery. surgery on Kathy, and her life hasn’t been the same since. Kathy has lost around 110 pounds and kept the weight off. “The changes in my life have been dramatic. I no longer have pain in my lower back, I can move around much better, I have so much more energy, and I’m able to see my kneecaps! There’s also the physical part – at 47, I’ve never looked better. It has changed every aspect of my life,
even for my children. I’m no longer the obese mom; I’m a normal mom.” Kathy recommends Dr. Gorospe to anyone considering weight loss surgery. “Dr. Gorospe has an excellent bedside manner, and he will actually spend time with you to go over your questions and concerns. I believe he’s not only a good doctor, but a good person.” If you are morbidly obese
iBlock®
Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement
Available exclusively with Dr. Ronald LaButti
This brand-new technology produces a 3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, the iBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well. When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between the implant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precise measurements made dynamically in real time. There are only five “iBlock” units in the United States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

With so many options available, it can be stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who to see, and what surgery is right for you. To help answer these questions, Dr. Gorospe offers free weekly seminars. During the seminars, Dr. Gorospe explains the entire process from beginning to end and assists the small group of attendees in determining if they are qualified for surgery. He offers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding (i.e. the Lap-Band surgery that Kathy received), and gastric sleeve surgeries. Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries are generally preferred for patients who need to lose a very large amount of weight (between 80 and 100 pounds, with a body mass index or 40 of higher) and suffer from co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. “These surgeries change the person’s hormonal components immediately, and there is almost 100 percent
improvement of their diabetes if they are on one oral medication only. Approximately 80 percent of patients who were on high blood pressure medications no longer need their meds after these surgeries,” explains Dr. Gorospe. “Lap-Band surgery is typically for those who need to lose a smaller amount of weight, who are approximately 50 pounds overweight with a BMI of 30 to 34.” Dr. Gorospe says the best part of his job is seeing the incredible changes that take place in his patients’ lives. “Before the surgery, many of my patients are depressed, hate their relationship with food, and are tired all time. When they lose the weight, their lives are prolonged and their quality of life is greatly improved. Their relationships with loved ones are better, and they’re able to do things they’ve never been able to before. It’s very gratifying to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives.” For more information about Dr. Gorospe’s upcoming seminars, contact Oklahoma Premier Bariatrics at (918) 252-2800.

Joining Forces for a Common Cause Since the Drug Free Communities grant operates in partnership with HCP, many of her passengers are the same. This connection between the two busses allows seat swaps as needed. A few additional passengers ride this bus because some of the suitcases also represent projects and strategies designed to reduce underage drinking as well as prescription drug misuse among Rogers County youth. Mendy Stone, executive director of Volunteers for Youth, uses this analogy to explain the partnership that has developed between her agency and HCP. “By bringing diversity to the table and pooling our resources with law enforcement, schools, youth organizations, the health department and more,” says Stone, “we can battle this problem together.” Through state, federal and Cherokee Nation grants, the two entities have been able to integrate their goals to fight
substance abuse in Rogers County. "Healthy Community Partnership was founded on prevention, and that is also the basis of all our efforts at Volunteers for Youth," Stone added. While Volunteers for Youth's DFC project focuses on underage drinking and substance abuse in youth, Healthy Community Partnership has been mainly focused on prescription drug misuse among youth and adults since its formation in 2008. “We work closely with the Drug Free Communities project director, the Rogers County Sheriff’s office, local police departments, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, nine Rogers County schools, graduated sanctions and juvenile court (county and city), Rogers County Youth Services, and many others in the community,” DeLozier says. “We are fortunate to have been able to bring various groups to the HCP table in an effort to
work together as one cohesive unit instead of several different organizations working independently.” While many associate abuse with illicit drugs, DeLozier cites the following figures: “Only 13 percent of Oklahoma's drug overdose deaths involve illicit drugs. According to the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s office, there were 872 fatal overdoses related to prescription drug abuse in 2010 and 2,500 nonfatal overdoses,” she says. “However, for the first six months of 2011, there were 794 fatal overdoses.” According to DeLozier, 94 percent of those fatal overdoses involved the mixing of drinks with prescription drugs. “It’s a deadly combination,” she adds. What people don’t realize, says DeLozier, is that “if it is not your prescription, it’s not okay to take it. It’s not safe. It’s not legal. It’s not acceptable.” Educating the public about the dangers is
Helping Inola Grow “My husband and I have lived in the Inola area for 30 years and all four of our children graduated from Inola High School,” she says. “But they all moved away because there was nothing for them to do here – I would like to help change that.” People stop by Carolcells for a variety of reasons. Some come to sit down with Carolyn at her computer and let her help them learn networking systems like Facebook. In fact, this particular aspect has resulted in two weddings. “One man came in and needed help to get his pictures on a dating site, where he later found his bride,” Carol relates with a smile. “And a couple of my Facebook friends got together as well.” Carolyn especially enjoys helping senior citizens discover that they can indeed learn and
a top priority for DeLozier. “Many mistakenly believe it’s okay to share prescriptions, but it’s not. By pooling our resources, we can collectively have a chance to make environmental changes in our communities.” Through grants and partnerships, these two entities hope to one day say, “Substance abuse does not exist in Rogers County.”

enjoy computer skills. Other groups gather to work on crafts, while still others just sit down for coffee and brainstorm ideas for Inola’s growth and development. For these particular gatherings, Carolyn has put up a large dry erase board to jot down ideas, facts and figures. Carolcells has been the location for several planning sessions as of late, including the Paint Inola Green Citywide Garage Sale (held every year in March), Inola Hayday, and Inola’s Christmas Parade. In the shop portion of Carolcells, one will immediately notice Carolyn’s sewing machine set up in one corner, surrounded by the handmade sock monkey toys that Carolyn is known for. Not only does she take orders for and sell these monkeys, but she offers space and materials for
party rentals based on the theme. “Sock monkeys are very popular with young girls – we almost sold out at our last craft show,” Carolyn says. “A make-your-ownsock-monkey theme is great for a girl’s birthday party.” She offers room rental for other types of parties as well, with a reasonable fee covering space and supplies. Carolyn worked for many years as a postal clerk at the downtown Tulsa post office, but since her retirement, she has turned her attention from this nationally focused organization to the growth and preservation of her own small hometown. In the past few years, she has done all kinds of things to raise money for and interest in Inola, everything from becoming involved with Project Chicks, a local quilting and fellowship group that meets every Tuesday evening at the Inola
library, to picking up and selling over 100 pounds of pecans. One of her main desires is to form an Inola investment group that will dedicate itself to training young people and putting empty buildings in historical downtown Inola to good use. “I have so many ideas and goals for Inola, but there is not enough of me to go around,” she says with a laugh. “I’m looking to network with others who are enthusiastic about our town.” For more information, contact

KKnee Pain No More
John Burgess lived with knee pain for 20 years before undergoing knee replacement surgery with Dr. LaButti.
By Joshua Danker-Dake John Burgess of Tulsa underwent knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald LaButti in 2011 after over two decades of knee problems. “I was very active in high school sports,” Burgess says. “I graduated from high school in
1967 and went into the military, where there was a lot of intense training, and I stayed active in intramural sports. I didn’t have any knee problems then. After my military years, I played a lot of sports until I began to develop knee problems in the late
1980s.” Since then, Burgess has undergone two arthroscopic surgeries on each knee. “It seemed like every five years or so, I’d have to have one or the other operated on. I finally quit playing sports around 1995

because of the knee problems.” In 2007, Burgess was informed he would probably not be able to have another arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, and would most likely have to have it replaced. “My knee pain was getting so severe that walking was becoming very difficult, and running was completely out of the question. I had tried all the over-the-counter medications I could find, but things continually worsened.” In 2011, Burgess went to see Dr. LaButti. “My supervisor had just undergone hip replacement surgery, and he was very pleased with his results. He recommended Dr. LaButti to me.” Dr. LaButti recommended knee replacement, and Burgess had the surgery done on his right knee. “By then, I was in constant pain. Walking was very difficult, and I had developed a severe limp. Sleeping had become an on-again, off-again experience every day. I was to the point where I would either have to have the surgery or retire – and I’m too young to retire.” Burgess’s surgery went well, he says. “The nurses and therapists at the hospital had me up and walking with a walker the day of the surgery. After a couple days in the hospital, I was released, and then I had home therapy for a week. Aside from the swelling in my knee, I never really experienced any pain from the surgery.” Burgess was on the walker for two weeks, then a cane for two more. “After four weeks, I
Page 25
was walking without the cane,” Burgess says. “After five, I was driving my car and riding my motorcycle. After six, I was dancing.” After seven, Dr. LaButti released him to work without restriction. “At week seven, when I began outpatient rehabilitation, I was told that I would need at least 115 degrees of movement before I could stop. On my first day, I had 130.” And, Burgess says, he is now free of limitations. But, he adds, he wishes he hadn’t waited. “I waited because I didn’t want to go through it more than once and I had been told that the replacement knee would only last 10 or 15 years. But I wish I hadn’t, because the surgery was no problem. Once the swelling went down, I was able to get back to normal; everything else was just walking and exercise. I’ve had no problems with the new knee, and would readily recommend knee replacement by Dr. LaButti to anyone needing the procedure.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com.

Wise Water Solutions BY SHIRLEY HALL
You turn it on and it flows from your tap, easy, convenient, potable water, technologically advanced purified water wholly fit for human consumption – but is it? Despite clean water laws, our tap water continues to be contaminated with a host of pollutants – pollutants known to increase the risk of serious health conditions. Conditions amplified by the addition of chloramines -a combination of chlorine and ammonia, to our drinking water. Sounds more like something you would clean with than drink. Worldwide chlorine has been used to disinfect drinking water. Although it is far safer than the bacteria it destroys, when combined with chloramines and chlorine dioxide a powerful carcinogenic Trihalomethane (THMs) is formed. Linked to liver, kidney and nervous system disorders, THMs are formed when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring materials found in water. If you think drinking bottled water protects you from these harmful contaminants, I am the bearer of bad news. 40% of bottled water is bottled tap water.
Yes, you read correctly. Not only is 40% of bottled water tap water, bottled water may or may not have received additional filtration. An independent study done by the Environmental Working Group found arsenic, THMs and 36 other harmful pollutants hidden in bottled water. In addition, drinking from a plastic bottle is a bad idea. Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol- A or BPA, a synthetic hormone disruptor linked to learning and behavioral problems, altered immune system function, prostate and breast cancers, early puberty in both genders, and a contributor to the health risks surrounding obesity. There is, however, a way to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones.
The most economical and environmentally sound choice you and your family can make is to purchase and install a water filter in your home. Granular Carbon and Carbon Block Filters are the most common types of counter top and under counter water filters. Granular activated carbon is recognized by the EPA as the best available technology for the removal of organic chemicals such as chloramines, herbicides, pesticides and industrial chemicals. For 26 years Environmental Resources has provided water and air filtration services to Tulsa businesses and residences. Sold, installed and maintained, our filters remove a host of contaminants found in drinking water. From the tap over the kitchen and bathroom sinks to showerheads, ice machines, water coolers, refrigerators, whole house systems, whole businesses and more, our time tested water filters deliver pure, great tasting water. Today drinking filtered water is simply a health conscious thing to do. Why not let our filters make a positive change in your life?

Brides, Plan Your Day in a Weekend
Brides-to-be and their loved ones will not want to miss The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend, January 5-6, 2013.
By Sheryl Sowell Brides, grooms and their families can save time, gas, energy, confusion and money by attending The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend, January 5-6, 2013. Making your wedding decisions at the show helps eliminate dreaded phone tag or trying to get an appointment with a wedding vendor. Even email is time-consuming and can delay the immediate response a bride wants and needs. Countless brides have found that attending The Tulsa Wedding Show skips all those wasted steps, as they are able to meet directly with vendors face-to-face on the show floor. This marks the 20th year of The Tulsa Wedding Show, and many new, exciting things are happening during the weekend. The show will be held Saturday, January 5 at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center, located at 6808 S. 107th E. Ave. Visit the Venues Day will be held citywide on Sunday, January 6. “We are combining all of our experience with knowledge of the latest trends and newest products and services,” says Vicki Taylor, founder of The Tulsa Wedding Show. “The most innovative is the V.I.B. (Very Important Bride) Elite Show
Preview.” A very limited number of tickets are available for this event. A V.I.B. ticket entitles you to exclusive early admission into the show, beginning at 9 a.m., before it opens to the public. This gives brides more personal attention, and crucial first access to the exhibitors. “Some dates are really popular, and V.I.B.s can lock in their wedding date with their chosen vendors while it is still available,”
Vicki adds. Moody’s will have their custom jeweler there to answer any questions, and they are also giving away a double diamond jewelry piece to one lucky bride. Brides of Oklahoma Magazine and Moody’s Jewelry are sponsors of the V.I.B Event, and they are really rolling out the red carpet. Every V.I.B. will receive a luxe tote bag from Brides of Oklahoma with gifts

from selected vendors inside, as well as a jewelry cleaning cloth and cleaner from Moody’s. Additionally, 25 lucky brides holding V.I.B. tickets will receive an 18-inch luxurious pearl strand necklace from Moody’s. General admission brides also have the opportunity to win! Moody’s will give away pairs of pearl earrings to 100 lucky general admission brides. Every single bride who attends the show will receive a tote bag, an issue of Brides of Oklahoma Magazine, and a coupon from Moody’s for $200 off a $500+ groom’s wedding band. The show opens to the public at 11 a.m., with over 100 exhibitors including bakeries, florists, musicians, venues and much more. “The venues range from mansions to lodges to chapels to ranches,” says Vicki. “Our many vendors offer everything you need and some things you didn’t know you needed! For example, one fun idea that many couples are doing is having an ice cream buffet, with a signature ice cream flavor created specifically for the bride and groom.” A special Fashions and Trends Room is where all the bridal shops will have continuous modeling in their
booths. The room will also showcase a tablescape display area, coordinated by Lynn Wheatley of Lasting Impressions, featuring tablescapes designed by all the top planners, decorators and florists in the Tulsa area. Another unique part of the weekend is Visit the Venues Day. It is held the day after the show, Sunday, January 6 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is a free, citywide open house day for wedding venues. Visit the Venues Day gives the group a chance to spend a fun day driving to each of their choice locations and touring them personally. For additional information and to purchase tickets to either the V.I.B. Elite Show Preview or The Tulsa Wedding Show, go to www.thetulsaweddingshow.com. Online V.I.B. admission is $25 or $30 at the door. General admission is $10 online or $12 at the door. Come and “Plan Your Day in a Day” (or two!) during The Tulsa Wedding Show Weekend. Tons of door prizes will be given away. Complimentary shuttle service from the east side of the Target parking lot will be provided by Old Urban Trolley. Sponsors include Renaissance Hotel, Swank Audio Visuals, Simply Elegant, Brides of Oklahoma Magazine, and Moody’s. For more information, contact
