Fishing, Fun & Fireworks for the Family Claremore sets annual 4th of July celebration at Claremore Lake. By Carol Beck-Round Fishing, fireworks, fun and music is on tap for the annual 4th of July celebration scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. that Thursday at Claremore Lake Park. The day’s activities will begin with registration at 7 a.m. for the annual Kids Fishing Derby, according to Joe Kays, Director of Claremore’s Parks and Recreation. “We had over 435 children who participated in the event last year and we expect even more this year.” The popular event has grown each year with the first 450 children to register receiving a free rod and reel, tackle box and bait. “It’s everything

they need to fish that day,” says Kays. “Each tackle box also contains the hooks and sinkers.” As soon as each participant registers and receives the free gear, fishing can begin. Weigh-in is at 10 a.m. Children in three age divisions will be competing to win a trophy for the smallest and the largest fish in each category. Ages by category include 4 – 6 year olds, 7 – 9 year olds and 10 – 12 year olds. Six new bicycles will also be given away—two in each age division—at the end of the fishing activities. When children register for the fishing derby, they receive a ticket for the (continued on page 30)

ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

COMMON QUESTIONS FOR THE MONEY MAVEN BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

Nothing thrills me more than a new prospective client coming in to their first appointment with one of my Money Maven articles in hand and talking about how much I have helped them. Wow! What a huge compliment. It warms my heart because I am passionate about helping people with their money and I am committed to their success. I believe that this is one of the things I am called here on this earth to do. There are a couple of common themes of questions that folks usually have in that free initial appointment. I thought I would address them here for others who may be wondering the same thing. Question #1… Often folks want to know if “they are the type of client that we take on?” Just so you know, my clients are from varying walks of life. They are Mr. and Mrs. Smith that have worked hard for the last 37 years at XYZ Company that are nearing retirement and need to rollover their 401k’s and pensions. They are 40-60 year old business owners, doctors, engineers, secretaries, dental assistants, nurses who have been saving for 20 to 30 years and have their investments all over the place (from old 401k’s to investment accounts at other firms). They need help figuring out what to do, if they are saving enough, and what else they need to be doing, etc. They are referrals from CPA’s and

attorneys that are coming to me after a divorce or death of a loved one because they have no idea what they have and even less what to do with it. Occasionally, I get someone really new to the investment world who is in their 20’s and very motivated. That is amazing too! No, not all of my clients are not millionaires. Some are, but most are regular everyday folks who have between 100-250 thousand and have been saving through their 401k’s at work or have investment accounts at other places that they aren’t getting much help with. They are “millionaires in training” that understand it is about working for it and not wishing for it. They are not waiting for things to happen. They are going out and making them happen. And lastly, they value what we bring to the table. They understand that in order to

potentially grow their money they should consider investing in it. The other common question we often get relates to what services we provide? How does all this work? I would say 90% of the new folks who come to me want us to manage their investments. They want to bring over accounts or 401k’s from other places and have us manage and invest them. We do an initial financial plan at no charge for them because we have to develop a roadmap for where we are going and how we will get there in order to effectively manage their investments when they come over. The other 10% are looking for a fee for advice type of arrangement. They want to pay a set fee for our time and have us provide a financial plan or offer investment advice. We can do both but the latter is less utilized because with the volatile market environment, investment advice today is likely to change rapidly and also it involves out-of-pocket expense. Remember, you’ve got to take the bull by the horns! You’ve got to start. I promise you that you will be glad you did. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com. Meet The Money Maven M

well. “I learned practical lessons about the cycle of life, planting seeds, nurturing growth, and harvesting,” says Melanie. “These are the lessons I still apply to my investment strategies.” As a child, Melanie spent time with her grandparents who farmed during the Great Depression. “My grandmother taught me to be thrifty,” she said. Melanie studied psychology at SMU and met Ken, her husband, her man and her business partner at Waterstone. After graduating with a Masters Degree in Counseling from Oklahoma State University, Melanie practiced as a counselor and marriage and family therapist. Always loving helping others, she later focused on money and investing. “It was always one of the top issues about which therapy clients worried and struggled,” she added. Melanie re-trained and was licensed to trade securities and provide financial planning which she has done for 14 years. Eleven years of counseling and marital therapy experience gave her an undying compassion for people and a keen understanding of clients’ feelings and their needs involving money and its emotional and relational reach. Recently Melanie shared an idea with a friend. She bought 100,000 pennies…$1,000 worth. The pennies were laid in wallto-wall rows across Waterstone’s reception area and when sunlight hits them they glow brightly. Just for fun, Melanie cast a handful of coins across the front sidewalk and cemented them with epoxy. She smiled when asked if anyone ever attempts to pick them up.

What can you do with 100,000 pennies?

Melanie is a frequent contributor to CNBC’s PowerLunch, Fox Business and Channel 8’s Good Day Tulsa. She works hard and plays hard. “Life is short, so get out there,” she says. “It’s not just about sav-

ing and working for retirement day. It’s also about finding what’s important to you and living it today.” Melanie grew up on a farm near Stuttgart, Arkansas, where her dad was a farmer and her mother a business owner. From her earliest days, she learned the value of hard work and perseverance, lessons that still serve her

Each time Melanie sees her beautiful penny floor she is reminded of these time-tested sayings: Pinching pennies; a penny saved is a penny earned; pennies from heaven; and “See a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck.” Each of Melanie’s clients is given a “lucky penny” and told, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” Waterstone serves clients who have worked hard, nourished 401k’s most of their lives and come to Melanie with significant wealth. She serves business owners, physicians, and engineers. But Melanie and Waterstone also serve folks from every walk of life. Most have significant wealth, but many are what Melanie calls “millionaires in training.” “I will teach you to be rich,” says Melanie. “It all begins with pinching pennies and getting out of debt. Then setting goals and working diligently to make it happen.” Melanie makes “cents” out of investing. “Take the bull by the horns,” she says, “invest in yourself and trust me.” “Life is Good,” is printed on the tire cover of Melanie’s orange jeep (She’s a huge OSU fan). She loves God, family, friends…and clients. Give Melanie, The Money Maven, a call and set up a visit. It’s free.

Varicose Veins Hurt More Than Your Vanity Vascular & Vein Laser Center offers VenaCure for painful, unsightly varicose veins.

By Carol Beck-Round What causes varicose veins? According to Dr. Hrdlicka, there can be several contributing factors, including genetics and heredity. Others include pregnancy, obesity and standing for exceptionally long periods. Blood is allowed to pool in the leg veins, rather than being pumped back up into the body, which is the norm. Varicose veins can cause pain and

heaviness in the legs, swelling, burning and stinging, aching and throbbing. Summertime means shorts and swimwear. For some, however, summer means keeping their legs hidden because of unsightly varicose veins, which can also be painful. Old treatments for the problem often involved a procedure called vein stripping, which was the only way to get relief

from the pain. The procedure also involved a hospital stay. The Vascular & Vein Laser Center in Claremore has been offering state-of-the-art laser treatment to help patients become pain-free and glad to expose their legs again, all with very little down time. According to Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, the treatment is one of many minimally-invasive procedures

Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, a trained general vascular and endovascular surgeon, uses the VenaCureEVLT on a patient with varicose veins. Vascular & Vein Laser Center in Claremore offers state-of-the-art treatments that require minimal down time and excellent results.

available. Dr. Hrdlicka has been treating varicose veins for 15 years, but the VenaCure EVLT is the number-one physician choice for laser vein treatment. “With the VenaCure,” says Dr. Hrdlicka, “targeted laser energy is used to seal the vein shut and helps you look better and feel better fast because it uses different wavelengths of light to treat the varicose veins.” According to Dr. Hrdlicka, there is less bruising and pain involved with the use of the VenaCure, which also gives immediate relief and minimal to no scarring after the procedure. You don’t have to suffer from the pain or embarrassment any longer. Dr. Hrdlicka, a Board Certified general vascular and endovascular surgeon and his staff are dedicated to giving their patients the highest quality care in a comfortable, pleasant environment. A graduate of Claremore High School, Dr. Hrdlicka received his medical degree from the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa before completing an internship, a residency in general surgery, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Ohio University Doctors Hospital in Columbus. In addition, he completed a sub-fellowship in endovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix. With the FDA approved VenaCure EVLT, Dr. Hrdlicka is committed to bringing his patients the results they desire with no general anesthesia and less than one hour in the office. “The procedure is easy to

Page 7

perform and gets patients back on their feet in approximately 45 minutes,” he adds. After the procedure, patients can walk out of the office without assistance. “It depends on the person as to how soon they can return to work,” he says. Insurance will pay for the laser treatment, which is performed in the office. Medicare will also pay for the treatment. Pre-authorization is usually required but there is usually not a problem getting patients approved. The initial consultation is free and no referral is needed unless required by the insurance company. “Anyone can come in for a free consultation to determine if he or she is a candidate for this procedure,” Dr. Hrdlicka says. “Many people think they have varicose veins but don’t. We can look at their leg and come up with a diagnosis at no charge.” To find out more about VenaCureEVLT and laser vein treatment or to schedule a free consultation, email claremoresurgeons@yahoo.com or call the Vascular & Vein Laser Center at (918) 341-5311.

Tulsa Herb Society, 25 Years and “Growing” An Evening with Patricia Lanza is planned for July 8th at the Tulsa Garden Center.

By Tina Lynn The Tulsa Herb Society is celebrating their 25th anniversary as a gardening society, therefore preparing for

another exciting, yet informative educational event. Preparations are well underway for An Evening with Patricia Lanza, July

Patricia Lanza, gardener and author.

8th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm at the TulsaGarden Center. Their free invitation to you includes an evening of garden exploration; where gardening enjoyment meets functionality. Originally from Crossville, Tennessee Patricia Lanza remembers what it was like to keep a garden by closely watching her grandparents’ garden in rocky, clay soil. She remembers how they rented a mule to plow in the spring then raked out the rows by hand. How they planted, watered and hoed weeds all summer. She also remembers the taste of fresh vegetables right from the garden: the flavor from red, juicy tomatoes, the taste of tender green beans and corn, indeed lots of corn picked by the apron full every day. Patricia Lanza began gardening just like her Tennessee grandparents, however by the time she was a grandmother she needed to garden a different way. She dealt with the same gardening conditions, rocky hardpan. It was there and then she discovered what she calls Lasagna Gardening; a method of

creating good soil without digging, tilling or weeding. It’s what keeps her in the garden today as she gardens near her original home where the soil is rock and clay. As a gardener and garden communicator, Patricia Lanza shares her knowledge as a writer, book author and public speaker with over twenty years’ experience. Her newest book, My Garden Doctor was published in 2009, a reprint of a book published in 1914 with a new forward and epilogue. Her other books include: Create Wonderful Gardens, Lasagna Gardening, Lasagna Gardening for Small Spaces, Lasagna Gardening with Herbs, My Grandmother's Aprons, and My Garden Doctor This year is very special for the Tulsa Herb Society; they are celebrating 25 years and growing! JoAnn White past President and charter member remembers, “The way I remember it, several of us wanted to "learn more." So, we started talking about a new herb society…” They discussed their plans with the then executive

director of the Tulsa Garden Center, who encouraged them to, "Go for it." Which they did and the rest is herbal history. Throughout the years THS has hosted speaker after speaker who have international appeal as horticulturalists, herbalists, historians and dig in the dirt gardeners. Each has brought knowledge to share not only for the novice gardener who just wants to feel the earth and reap solace, but for the seasoned professional horticulturist who yearns to gain new gardening prospective. Join the Tulsa Herb Society as they welcome this kindred spirit and knowledgeable gardener to Tulsa. The event is open to the public and reservations aren’t required.

AA Prescription for Summer Fun J&J Pharmacy in Claremore offers its customers a full-service pharmacy as well as a full selection of gifts and décor. By Cassie Woods J&J Pharmacy has been proudly serving the Claremore community for nearly three decades. Located in the Nemar Center, and in addition to housing a full-service pharmacy, the store is packed with a huge selection of gifts and home décor items. Owners John and Patsy Daniel opened J&J Pharmacy in March 1985. John had been a pharmacist in Claremore for ten years before starting his own venture. Patsy handles the boutique side of the store. The husband and wife team have kept their pharmacy in the same location for all of its 28 years and pride themselves on earning loyal customers through quality service. In addition to the pharmacy in the back, the store is adorned with numerous displays featuring an endless selection of gift items. J&J has a large display of patriotic items and signs perfect for holiday decorating. Some of their best-selling items are the Vera Bradley and the Tyler Candle collections, OSU and OU merchandise, and Lily and Laura bracelets. J&J Pharmacy also carries Wine A Rita and

Wind and Willow items which are perfect for a summer party. The store has also added some new men’s gift items. “We have also most recently added Duck Dynasty Tervis

tumblers to our line of available products,” said store employee Mary Kate Bolllman. “The show has become so popular that they make a perfect gift for the guy in your life.”

Employee Mary Kate Bollman shows off a display of kitchen items, including Eucalyptus Stoneware, available at J&J Pharmacy in Claremore.

In recognition of our great state, J&J Pharmacy carries Waxing Poetic Oklahoma charms as well as many other charms that a customer can pick from to custom make their own necklace. They also have a nice collection of Eucalyptus Stoneware, a brand also carried by Williams Sonoma. In addition to making a beautiful decorative piece, the stoneware has detailed openings on the side that are perfect for keeping fruit fresh and can also go in the oven to heat up and be used to keep bread or other items warm. Another very popular item is the line of Scout bags, which include totes, collapsible storage bins and travel bags. “The Scout bags are really great multi-purpose totes,” said Bollman. “They carry up to 40 pounds and can be used as a reusable bag for the grocery store or a weekend bag. We have some that are great for the lake or ball games because they have so many pockets where you can put snacks and drinks.” One of the newest items available in the store is the popular Bentley Drink Ware.

The tumblers are BPA free, made in the USA, just across the state line in Bentley, Ark., and are guaranteed for life not to break. They have several color options, as well as OSU and OU designs. “We have people come in here and tell us how they have Bentley items that they purchased five, ten, 15 or even 20 years ago and how they still use them every day,” said Bollman. “They are definitely a quality item that won’t disappoint and perfect for a glass of sweet tea on a hot summer day.” Regular store hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 6:30 pm and Saturdays from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm. professionals and anyone who works with older adults. According to Eileen Neighbors, marketing director at Tulsa Promenade Mall, “The event is designed to help seniors and their families meet local experts and gather information that will help older adults lead more active, independent and healthier lives. The aging services network in Tulsa is vast and can be somewhat confusing. EEarn, Save and Dazzle Aya Johnson introduces stylish Park Lane Jewelry. By Lorrie Ward When Aya Johnson went to a fundraising car wash while she was still living in California over a year ago, she never expected to find a new business direction. But as she approached a friend who was helping at the car wash, she saw her friend had a table set up with a display of lovely jewelry from Park Lane. “Since I like jewelry, I always see something I want,” Aya notes with a smile. “But I liked this so well that two weeks later, I hosted a show—and then another and another.” Aya’s own collection of Park Lane increased along the way, along with her confidence in the product. After her third show, she moved to Oklahoma, and soon she attended her first Park Lane convention in Chicago in July of 2012. “While I was there, I noticed Oklahoma was not mentioned when they called out state names during the conference,” Aya recalls. “I thought it would be beneficial to Oklahoma if I could establish this great product here.” Park Lane is a family owned and operated business which has proved its staying power from the time it was established in 1955 by Shirley and Arthur

Levin. Today, the Levin’s three sons, Scott, Mark, and Arthur III, still operate a company which they describe as being: “dedicated to providing exquisite jewelry and incomparable programs designed to reward our customers, our hostesses, and our representatives … Park Lane offers something special to everyone; we invite you to explore the possibilities!” For Aya, there are many reasons to share the good news about Park Lane jewelry. “This jewelry is of extremely good quality,” she says. “There is always something special, there is always something good—for both women and men,” she adds, pointing out that J.R. Martinez of Dancing with the Stars wore pieces of jewelry from Park Lane. Park Lane also collaborated with E Entertainment to create catalogue items that look as good as those worn on the red carpet—but are not as expensive. Aya also loves how Park Lane stands behind its products. “I love this because they have an unconditional guarantee,” says Aya. “You can send any part of the jewelry back and they will send you a new one, within 120

days. Then after 120 days, you can still get a replacement order for only $7.” Park Lane also offers a wide variety of looks to accompany differing styles and tastes. Whether you like the vintage look of pearls mother of pearl or your taste runs toward trendy beads and charms, Aya feels you are sure to find something to suit you from amongst Park Lane’s wide selection. She points out that Park Lane introduces a new piece of jewelry every month and it is easy to keep up with the latest introduction: “The easiest way to see everything is to go online.” But even with the ease of internet shopping, Aya encourages interested parties to become involved in the direct sales end of Park Lane, as it offers many great deals for a hostess or sales representative to increase their own collection. And she goes back to the beginning of her own experience to expound yet another thing that sets Park Lane apart: its percentage of return for non profits. “Any school or church group that sells Park Lane gets a fifty per cent return,” says Aya, who points out that this return is

RRCB Bank Car Giveaway CNG vehicles cost less at the pump, you could win one and save money. By Jocelyn Wood Want to save money at the gas pump? How about saving an estimated $2 per gallon? Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a fossil fuel alternative to petrol (gasoline) and costs pennies on the dollar at the pump compared to regular gas. Currently, area service stations

are charging around $1.00 per gal for CNG compared to $3.50 for gas. Summer Saving Tip: Enter RCB Bank’s Car Giveaway and you could win a new cost-saving CNG vehicle. RCB Bank is growing and to celebrate, we’re giving away a

car this summer! The prize is a 2012 CNG Honda Civic with navigation and Bluetooth. Running now through August 31, every time a customer swipes their RCB Bank debit card, they are automatically entered to win. Entry forms are also available at all of RCB

Mary and V. R. Campbell of Catoosa are entered to win the CNG Honda Civic to be given away by RCB Bank.

Bank’s 33 locations across Oklahoma and Kansas. In branch entries are limited to one per person, per branch, per day. “We know our customers have a choice when it comes to banking,” said Roger Mosier, RCB Bank President and CEO. “So we wanted to give something back and decided the car would be a great gift.” Throughout the summer, 10 finalists will be drawn from the entries and at a special event in September; those finalists will each get to try a key in the car. The finalist with the key that unlocks the door to the Honda Civic wins the car. RCB Bank is opening three new locations in Edmond this month. Additionally, construction is beginning on a brand new building in Arkansas City, Kansas. “We are very fortunate to be growing and adding more convenient locations for our customers,” said Mosier. “The growth in the central part of the state is something we’ve been focused on for a while. Edmond is a great town and the community is so welcoming. We’ve had one branch there for several

years and we’re excited to see our footprint grow over there.” No purchase is necessary to win the Honda Civic. See official rules online at www.RCBbank.com under "Win a Car”. Other ways to save money at the gas pump is to start bargain hunting online. GasBuddy.com allows you to search for the lowest gas prices near you and offers useful fuel saving tips. It also has a Trip Cost Calculator that will give an estimation of gas costs based on your car model and distanced traveled. If you’re planning a road trip this summer or drive long distances to work, check out Mapquest Gas Prices which allows you to plan a trip and find where gas will be cheapest along the way. Both Gas Buddy and Mapquest offer free smartphone apps in addition to a number of other available apps that track gas prices to help you save. EEarning Customer Trust Fowler Toyota of Tulsa Service Department is willing to listen. By Duane Blankenship Shane Wohl, Service Director for Fowler Toyota of Tulsa, has spent most of his 13 years in automotive service with a local Toyota dealership and with a dealership in Texas. “I’m really glad to be back in Tulsa with the Fowler Toyota of Tulsa operation,” he said. “This is a new group with lots of Toyota background and experience.” Shane got his start in the

automobile business when a cousin was working in sales at a local dealership. Looking for a job, Shane asked if he thought they might put him to work in their sales department. At the end of the year he was one of the store’s highest producers and won a nice vacation trip. One day he noticed a lady in tears coming from the service department. Asking if he could

help, she said she had lost a hubcap after having her tires rotated by the dealership and she had just been told they would not replace it. Making a quick decision, Shane took her to the parts department and gave her a hubcap. The problem was quickly and easily resolved. The next day, Shane was confronted by the service director who told him he had heard what had transpired. Instead of reprimanding him as expected, the service director asked Shane if he would come to work for him in the dealership’s service department. Shane knew he had solved a bad issue for the lady. He had earned her trust, made her happy, and retained her as a customer for the dealership. He enjoyed what he had done and continues to this day to exhibit that same good judgment with each customer opportunity he encounters. “I learned a long time ago that an upset customer is not really unhappy with me, but just with the situation. I am just the one currently available to listen to the customer’s concerns,” said Shane. “I sincerely believe a

customer when they come to me with a problem. I don’t think they will go that far out of their way unless they are truly unhappy or believe there is an issue that needs resolving.” Shane enjoys taking care of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa’s valuable customers and likes keeping them happy. Shane sees customer service as a give-and-take opportunity. He has a great personality and comes across as very genuine and sincere. “I’ve found that you need to treat people the same way you want and expect to be treated. And you’ve got to earn the respect of your customers,” he said. “If I respect you, you’re probably going to respect and trust me.” In addition to passing the rigorous Toyota Certification Program, most of Fowler’s technicians are also certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). They use state-of-the-art equipment and tools designed especially for your Toyota as well as genuine Toyota Parts that are designed to keep your vehicle working at Toyota's high-quality

levels. Shawn Replogle is Fowler Toyota of Tulsa’s service department shop foreman and is a Toyota master diagnostic technician…the highest level attainable. “All our employees want to work here,” says Shane. We have an obligation to our customers and inspect their vehicles each time they drive in for recommended maintenance or with a problem.” Shane sees the Fowler Toyota of Tulsa’s service team as wanting customers to feel a high comfort level and peace of mind with their service department. “We treat your car as if it were our own. We’re never going to try to sell you a product or service that we don’t believe will keep your vehicle running safer, better and longer,” he added. Shane Wohl and the Fowler Toyota of Tulsa’s service team want to win your trust. For more information, contact

BBuilding with Pride Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns offer variety and top grade work. By Carol Beck-Round Whether you need a storage building, a pole barn, loafing shed, a metal garage, a cabin or another portable building, Inola Portable Buildings & Pole Barns can meet your needs. In business since 1998, they have earned an A+ business rating from the Better Business Bureau, according to owner Carl Parson. “We only use the number one grade materials on everything

we build,” says Parson, who before starting this business had been in the construction and roofing business for 20 years. His experience in that field has carried over to the quality he delivers in every product his company makes, whether it is metal or wood. At the business, located off the north side of HWY 412 at 30355 South 4230 Road, you can

browse through more than 50 displays available. However, 90 percent of the businesses’ work is done on location. “We’ve also built carports and RV covers as well as metal garages,” he adds. “We stay busy and do some custom work. If you have an idea for a building that you would like, just ask.” In the 15-year history of Inola Portable Buildings, “we

have never had a complaint about our buildings,” says Parson. “Our business has grown through wordof-mouth. We started with two buildings when we opened and it just continues to grow each year.” While they do mainly residential work, the company has expanded—again by referrals—to include portable building projects at public schools in Claremore, Jay and Tulsa as well as businesses like Arby’s. “We have built storage buildings for Arby’s in Sperry and Grove,” he adds. “We have also constructed portable buildings for the City of Tulsa.” Because of their commitment to their craftsmanship and through word-of-mouth, the company has had calls from as far away as Texas and Arizona inquiring about their portable buildings. However, Parson declined the business because of the distance involved. “We will, however,” says Parson, “build anywhere in northeastern Oklahoma.” Conventional or Dutch Barn portable buildings include a 40-year treated skid warranty along with treated floor joists on 16 inch centers, ¾ inch tongue and groove flooring, #2 stud grade materials, a 25-year factory warranty on Smart trim, 25-year warranty on Smart panel siding, 30# felt paper and a 25-year warranty on Tamko shingles. Extras, like steel doors, windows, 4 foot loft, work bench and a 4 foot treated ramp, are available at an additional charge. Sizes begin at 8 x 8 up to a 16 x 24. Pole barns, which range in size from 24 x 24 to 40 x 60, include one walk-in door and one

9 x 8 overhead door. An additional door is available for an extra charge. The company offers a 40-year manufacturer’s warranty on the 29-gauge metal used in the pole barns and loafing sheds while the insulation comes with a manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. Also included in the base price is a 4-inch concrete slab with rebar and 10 foot sidewalls. Loafing sheds come in three sizes: 12 x 20, 12 x 30 and 12 x 40. “We can build a pole barn, concrete included, within a week,” says Parson. “We can complete a portable building— built on site—in one day.” Parson also says they will do a free on-site inspection before building a pole barn to determine how much of the field we need to level before we can begin construction. Although they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Parson will meet with potential customers at a different time to accommodate their schedules. “They just need to give us a call and we can work it out.” The company also offers rent-to-own options. SSummit Physical Therapy “Just because it is common, does not mean that it is normal.” The Women’s Health Physical Therapy program at SUMMIT can help women of all ages improve their bladder symptoms and prolong independent living. Ashleigh Day, MPT, specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction and treatment. Studies have shown that over a quarter of all women between the ages of 18 – 59 have involuntary leakage, and most of that is caused from child bearing. Of the women who had leakage three months post partum, 92% continued to experience leakage five years later. The common thought is that it will go away eventually or that women are just supposed to deal with it, that it is par for the course. One of the most common reasons that women are put in nursing homes is because of incontinence issues.

Ashleigh has improved the situations of women who were not able to travel long distances by car because of the number of restroom stops they would have to make along the way. After their treatment sessions, they reported being able to travel without making stops because their frequency issues were gone. Studies show 13 million Americans are incontinent. Women are waiting approximately three years before seeking help for their incontinence. A lot of women think if my doctor is not asking me about this issue then it must be normal. Advertisements in media tell women to take a pill or wear a pad; so many women are not aware of treatment options. “Women need to learn to talk about their symptoms, you shouldn’t settle for taking a pill or

wearing a pad,” states Day. “Women need to bring up issues they are experiencing with their doctor because their physician may not always ask.” One of her many success

stories includes a middle aged woman who was scheduled to have a hysterectomy due to pelvic pain, but was referred to SUMMIT’s Women’s Health Program right before surgery. Ashleigh was able to eliminate the pelvic discomfort and the need for surgery. Ashleigh worked with her for six visits and identified that she suffered from low back joint alignment issues and fixed her back while also giving her some pelvic floor relaxation techniques. She was able to perform everything she wanted to without pain. She had been in constant discomfort for months prior to seeing Ashleigh. Ashleigh can help women delay or prevent surgery, as well as work with them pre or post surgery. She also helps women who are experiencing pelvic pain, struggling

www.ValueNews.com with fecal incontinence, and overactive bladders. Ashleigh recently delivered her first child. She had a successful pregnancy and childbirth process. She is excited to work with more pregnant women in the Rogers County area, taking them from the beginning of their pregnancy through post partum. Ashleigh can provide pregnant women with safe exercise programs based on their

individual needs and goals. She can provide pain relief for orthopedic conditions that commonly occur during the course of pregnancy, and braces to support their backs, as well as arch supports through foot orthotics. Postpartum therapy can assist women in getting back to an exercise program, and rehabilitate women from the various traumas endured during delivery including scar restrictions from c-sections and episiotomies, joint dysfunctions, prolapse, and more. She can also assist with labor and delivery positioning and relaxation training. Ashleigh also works with children who have bowel and bladder issues. She has even worked with kids who experience anxiety due to leakage or “accidents”. She has helped reduce

their anxiety by 90% or more through her therapy with them. Ashleigh is passionate about changing the lives of women and children with incontinence issues and more. Her medical knowledge is changing the lives of many, but her faith is also a component. “I am not ashamed to say that I pray for my patients,” states Ashleigh. “I am a Christian and I take my requests before God because I want my patients’ situation to improve. I do what I can on the medical end, and He takes care of the rest.” “Don’t wait till you have had leakage for 20 years, get help now and enjoy life without the worries of leakage,” states Day. “Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normal,” says Day. “Just because all your friends are leaking when they laugh or jump doesn’t mean you have to. You can do something about it.” Medicare, Medicaid and most insurances will pay for these type of services. Ask your doctor for a referral to SUMMIT for Women’s Health Physical Therapy. RRegain Your Footing Dr. Ronald S. LaButti helps patient regain his quality of life. By Sara Dale The activity level of Toby Jenkins, Executive Director of Oklahomans for Equality, is leaps and bounds above what it once was. And, he happily attributes most of the credit to Tulsa orthopedic surgeon, Ron LaButti, D.O. Jenkins, 53, had always enjoyed an active and athletic lifestyle. Yet, this all took an unexpected turn (or downhill slide) five years ago. As Executive Director of Oklahomans for Equality (OkEq), Jenkins coordinates the organization’s large-scale annual events including the Tulsa Pride Festival. As in years past, the 2008 festival featured a multitude of attractions, including an obstacle course for the kids. “The obstacle course included a huge slide,” Jenkins says. “All was going well until one of the little girls had gone to the top of the slide, but refused to come down; so, I went up to retrieve her.” As Jenkins and the little girl descended down the 14-foot slide, she suddenly planted her foot in the middle of it, sending them both into a frightening

freefall. “My first reaction was to try to protect her from the fall by bundling her up like a ball,” Jenkins says. Fortunately, the little girl didn’t sustain any injuries. Yet, the same could not be said of Jenkins. The treacherous fall left him with torn ligaments in his left leg and knee -- and as would soon become evident -- a painful condition that continued to worsen and obliterate his immobility and active way of life. Prior to Jenkins’ accident, his routine had included daily five-mile runs along Riverside Drive. In addition, his position as OkEq’s Executive Director frequently entailed a demanding, active schedule, plus a fair share of travel. “As time went on, the pain became more excruciating. I also started gaining a lot of weight since exercising was out of the question,” Jenkins says. “I couldn’t walk very far, sleep very well, go up or down stairs or even kneel at church during communion. In addition to the constant pain, my entire left leg often became numb after sitting for any period of time.”

Happy Turn of Events Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and one for which Toby Jenkins is most pleased is meeting orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ron LaButti. “From the start, Dr. LaButti’s ‘no nonsense’ and upfront approach was very refreshing,” Jenkins says. “After running tests and thoroughly examining my left leg, he told me exactly what he thought and did his best to steer me away from the most severe and expensive treatments. Plus, throughout it all, his staff was incredibly nice and helpful in every way.” In January of this year, Dr. LaButti administered cortisone injections into Jenkins’ left knee, as well as prescribed ongoing physical therapy sessions. “Choosing the treatment that is right for each individual patient is a very important ecision,” Dr. LaButti says. “I felt Toby was too young to undergo surgery at this time and was an ideal candidate for a less invasive approach. It’s been so gratifying

Toby Jenkins enjoys an active lifestyle after being treated by Dr. LaButti. to see the ‘new and pain-free’ Toby jump back into his former active lifestyle with both feet!” Footloose and Pain-Free Today, Toby Jenkins is 39 pounds lighter and continues to celebrate personal landmarks. “It’s made a tremendous difference in my life,” he says. “I’m walking five miles every morning, getting down on the ground to play with my grandchildren, and handling huge OkEq events with plenty of energy to spare.

To put it into perspective, after one of our events a year ago last spring, I was in horrible pain and couldn’t move for three days. After this year’s gala event, I felt great. In fact, I felt so good I’m sure I could’ve danced all night!” For more information, contact

Rock Out with the Tulsa Rock & Mineral Society The Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society is hosting their largest showcase of the year at Expo Square Exchange Cetner on July 13 and 14.

By Christopher Davis The Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society have been in existence since 1958. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to promote interest in rocks, minerals, gem stones, fossils, artifacts, jewelry-making and earth science. These rock and mineral enthusiasts provide educational and participatory workshops, organize rock, gem stone and jewelry shows, and foster a helping and teaching environment to connect newcomers with longtime rock hounds. Members facilitate workshops for young and old, alike, and focus on ways to educate the public and spark interest in rocks and minerals. Lapidary workshops (“lapidary” refers to cutting, polishing or engraving precious stones) are held regularly at ORU facilities every week, and the TRMS put on demonstrations events year round. Some popular demonstrations include flint knapping (creating stone tools, such as arrowheads, by hand) and grinding and polishing marbles from quartz, ruby, etc.

Finis Riggs (longtime TRMS member) has built his own marble machine, and frequently displays them at shows. “It’s a fun hobby,” says Ben Thomas, who has been a member of the TRMS for about five years, “we try to focus on education and get the kids interested in fossils and geodes and jewelry, and also emphasize conservation of the environment.” Thomas points out the importance of getting young ones outside and encouraging them to appreciate nature’s beauty. By explaining the processes that form fossils, minerals, gem stones and geodes, and showcasing the beautiful works of art and jewelry created from these stones, children are inspired to unplug from TV and video

games a little more often and step outside and explore the world surrounding them. Some of the rock and mineral samples frequently on display include fossils. These ancient impressions, left behind by bones of animals or plants, provide an awe-inspiring window into the distant past. Petrified wood is a common find at these shows, and the variety of shapes, sizes and colors might cause one to second guess whether or not the material in front of them was, actually, wood. Another fun type of fossil to view, especially for children, is called coprolite. Essentially, coprolite is fossilized feces. Never fear, parents! These droppings, left behind by dinosaurs, mammals or birds were transformed to stone epochs ago, and are much more like petrified wood or geodes than anything you might avoid in the yard. On July 13th and 14th, the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society will be hosting their largest educational event of the year. Located at Expo Square, the Rock, Mineral, Fossil and

Finis Riggs shows off his marble machine and invites everyone to explore rocks and minerals with the TRMS on July 13th and 14th at Expo Square Exchange Center.

Jewelry Show will feature some of the finest collections and plenty of workshops and displays. “This show is our premier showcase for the Rock and Mineral Society,” notes Finis Riggs, longtime member of the TRMS, “there will be a lot at the show that most people have never even seen before. We will have twenty-five of the top dealers in the nation showing their collections and selling artifacts, fossils, gem stones, geodes and quality hand-made jewelry.” This last item, fine jewelry, cannot be stressed enough. “Many folks don’t realize the gorgeous jewelry available at our shows,” Mr. Riggs says. Artists make jewelry by hand, and incorporate silver, turquoise, rubies, zircon, emeralds, crystals, agate and just about any other substance found in the earth.

The weekend of July 11-14 is packed with festivities and events fit for all ages to recognize the Circle Cinema’s birthday and to highlight the grand re-opening of the original cinema building at 10 S. Lewis Ave. The Circle Cinema has been a staple for the film industry in the Tulsa community, and is the city’s only nonprofit and independent movie theater. Throughout its 85 years in operation, the Circle Cinema is thankful to remain a relevant and appreciated foundation to the community it serves. “As we look back on our 85 years within the community, the Circle Cinema wants to tell the people of Tulsa, ‘Thank you,’” said Cofounder Clark Wiens. “We are planning to pull out all the stops to make this a memorable weekend for lovers of film in Tulsa.” If you are looking for a family-oriented, fun-packed event, don’t miss the Circle Cinema

festivities through July 11-14. This event will be enjoyable for all ages. The festivities will include appearances of Oklahoma legends featured on the Circle Cinema Walk of Fame, live music, and select screenings. The celebration will feature the grand re-opening of the original cinema building. Instead of opting for a contemporary theater renovation, the Circle Cinema decided to combine the tradition of the past with today’s technology. In doing so, the Circle Cinema exterior will be an identical facade of the original 1952 design combined with the conveniences of modern technology. “When the renovation process began, the goal was to bring the Circle Cinema’s look and feel back to its peak in the 1950s. This latest project does just that,” said Wiens. “We have been eagerly anticipating the day we could let the public experience the Circle Cinema at its best.” The theater originally opened July 15, 1928 with a showing of “Across the Atlantic”

starring Monte Blue. Cost of construction was $62,000 which would be around $800,000 with today’s money. The Circle Theater was popular with the pre-teen and young teenage crowd. The 10-cent price of a movie ticket included a feature film and serials. Popular film serials like “The Green Hornet” drew the neighborhood children to the movie theater as often as the feature films. The feature highlights many famous Oklahoman’s that have been influential in the film industry. The likes of Brad Pitt, Chuck Norris, Reba McEntire, Kristen Chenoweth, Joan Crawford and Will Rogers are just a handful of hall of famers who once called Oklahoma home. The Circle Cinema Foundation’s mission is to use film to foster understanding and appreciation of the diversity of the human experience, and create community among the viewers in the restored historic Circle Cinema. The Circle

Circle Cinema today and in days gone by. The Circle Cinema Foundation’s mission is to use film to foster understanding and appreciation of the diversity of the human experience. Cinema showings feature a variety of independent, foreign and documentary films. The facility itself consists of four separate viewing quarters; the Circle, Circle 1, Circle 2 and the theatre with the most intimate seating, the Quad.

SSummer Family Fun World Outreach Church presents a day full of family, friends, fun, and faith.

By Stephanie Reed From the Australian outback to the Venezuelan jungles, World Outreach Church is committed to sharing the powerful truths of faith and healing. It is in this spirit that the church presents Summer Family Fun on July 13, 2013 from 11:00-1:00 PM. Located at World Outreach Church just east of Memorial off of 91st street, the day is meant to celebrate and help Tulsans who might need a little help and a little love. With a fun-filled fair atmosphere, children are sure to enjoy the inflatables, games, face painting, and clowns, while mom and dad can take advantage of free clothing, free household items, free oil changes and free haircuts. “We see so many people come in tentatively, not sure what they are walking into, but they know they need help. By the time they leave, they are smiling, overjoyed, and loved. That is what our work is about,” Hayne Schurz remarks. “We want to encourage everyone to come out, enjoy lunch on us. It is a totally free day that Tulsans can enjoy and benefit from.” Though most wouldn’t recognize it now with the lofty, modern architecture and abundance of flags decorating the campus, World Outreach Church had its humble

beginnings in 1998 in the gym at East Central High School auditorium. Though the building has evolved and the congregation has grown, the church’s guiding principles have not changed at all: Word, Spirit,World. Missions Pastor, Hayne Schurz describes the unique atmosphere as “based on the Word, but driven by the Spirit. This gives our services a certain type of freedom in structure that other churches may not have. While Pastors Mark and Janet Brazee always have a plan for the service; if they feel led in a particular direction, they go where their hearts lead them.” In fact, World Outreach Church is itself a product of where the Pastors’ hearts have led. Starting in the late 70’s, the Brazee’s traveled widely teaching at churches around the United States and overseas, particularly in Europe, where they hosted theological conferences and seminars. The two were content to live out of suitcases and only admired the dedication and drive that they encountered from Pastors bound to a single church. In the 1990’s the Brazee’s found themselves moved in a direction that they never anticipated. It was time to put their suitcases away, and plant

firm roots. These roots have evolved into World Outreach Church. Like the founders, the church is mission based, and the congregation of 750-1000 finds themselves fulfilled in spreading of the Word. With over 30 years in mission related work, Hayne Schurz has been associated with the pastors for 15 years; the first four spent as a missionary in Bangkok, Thailand. “We really work on all levels of missionary work” explains Hayne. “We have prayer groups, short term missionary travelers, long term missionaries, community outreach groups, etc. Our goal is to involve the entire congregation in spreading the Word, educating, and helping those in need both at home and around the world.” For more information on attendance or donations please visit the church website at www.woctulsa.org or call the church at 918-461-9628.

THE BEST POTATO SOUP EVER Ingredients: 5 large potatoes (peeled and diced) 4 stalks of celery 1/2 medium onion 1 green onion (scallion) 1/2 brick of Velveeta 1/2 cup milk Salt and Pepper to taste Peel potatoes and dice into large cubes and put in a 5 quart pot. Chop onion and celery and put into the pot with the potatoes. Add just enough water to cover the vegetables. Bring to a boil and then cook on a low simmer for 25 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Don’t drain. Add velveeta, milk, salt and pepper to the pot until melted. Serve topped with chopped scallions. - Submitted by Suzanne H.

reduce heat to medium. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side or until golden brown and tender. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over eggplant during last minute of cooking to melt. While eggplant is cooking, combine spaghetti sauce and pepper flakes in a microwave-safe measuring cup. Cover with plastic wrap and cook at high power for 2 minutes or until heated through. Top eggplant with sauce and Parmesan cheese and serve. - Submitted by Jessie R.

BBQ CHICKEN PIZZA Ingredients: 1 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crust 1/2 cup barbecue sauce 1/2 cup grilled chicken (diced) 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper 1/4 cup red onion

and vanilla. Beat well. Add dry ingredients to beaten mixture stir with fork till well combined, slowly. Form dough into 1” balls, roll in powder. Place balls 2” apart on cookie sheet. Bake at 375*, for about 8-12 minutes, or until lightly golden. Cracks will form in the top of the cookies and will appear moist in the cracks. As they stop glistening they should be done. Makes about 60 cookies. - Submitted by Kip R.

BRIANA’ S BODACIOUS CHICKEN Ingredients: 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 4-5 garlic cloves 1 cup fresh basil 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup water 1 cup sliced mushrooms 1 package of cherry or grape tomatoes 1/2 red onion sliced

each through the middle so you end up with 4 layers(or you can just leave it at 2 layers, doesn't make any difference, really). If you decide to cut them, putting the cake in the freezer for 10-15 mins helps it stay firm and not so crumbly when you cut. Spread a good amount of the filling on top, staying about 1" from the edge. You will have plenty to put a good amount of filling on each layer. Once cake is layered and filling on, frost entire cake with the milk chocolate frosting.

Rinse beans in cold water, drain well. Combine beans, salsa, cumin and chili powder in large pan. Cook over mediumhigh heat for about ten minutes, mashing beans slightly with back of wooden spoon. Stir occasionally, adding a little water if mixture looks too dry. Spoon bean mixture into tortillas. Top with cheese. Fold each tortilla into an envelope shape, ensuring both ends are tucked in. Enjoy! - Anonymous

Rogers County School Supply Drive Prepares 16th Annual Giveaway Donors needed to help supply needy schoolchildren with back-to-school supplies.

By Carol Beck-Round Can you remember your first day of school each August? You were excited because your backpack was filled with new supplies like crayons, pencils and pens, notebook paper and notebooks. The tools you carried helped you get off to a good start. Within the next four weeks, stores will be posting the lists of classroom supplies each teacher deems necessary for his/her students to learn. Many students, however, won’t have the luxury because their parents can’t afford the supplies needed to send their children back to school prepared to learn. Replacing outgrown clothing as well as purchasing the necessary supplies to start out the year ready to learn, many families are forced to make choices. With fluctuating gas prices and the increasing cost of food putting a dent in their budgets, parents don’t have many options. However, 15 years ago, members of the Claremore First United Methodist Church stepped up to help those less fortunate by providing what each child needed to get off to a good start. Last year, the Rogers

County School Supply Drive, which is coordinated by the church, provided supplies for 2,741 needy children in the county. In 2012, children in the following Rogers County schools received assistance through the generous donations of others: Catoosa—162; Chelsea—306; Claremore—1380; Foyil—284; Inola—140; Justus-Tiawah—80; Oologah—139; Sequoyah—179; Verdigris—71. “Although our church administers the program, we couldn’t do it without the help of many generous churches, individuals, businesses and civic organizations who donate money to help us purchase the supplies each year,” says Ray Dawson, program coordinator. “The number of children seeking help has grown steadily each year since the program began.” According to Dawson, “the program has no overhead costs. We use the church’s children center for storage and distribution and volunteers provide the workers’ lunch. Every dime contributed goes to purchase supplies because volunteers provide the labor to

sort, pack and distribute the backpacks, pencils, pens, notebooks, paper and other supplies.” To make the most of the donated funds, Dawson uses a bid sheet to get the best prices on the supplies. If there are any funds left over, they are carried

over to next year’s supply drive. “I am concerned this year because a local business who was our largest contributor for the past several years is no longer able to help us. As a result, we must find more help,” he adds. “In 2012, we were able, with God’s help, to use donations to

Page 29

assist seven more students than in 2011 with 1615.91 less in costs,” he explains. “This is partially due to the help, in the form of low pricing from our friends at Office Everything and Wal-Mart.” The initial order for supplies must be placed in early July to receive them in time to distribute by August 1, so this is only an estimate of what the needs will be. Therefore, it is particularly beneficial that these local merchants allow surplus items to be returned for credit. Last year, the total cost of supplying the needs of Rogers County schoolchildren totaled $45,224.73. “When a child starts school without needed supplies,” says Dr. Ray Crawford, senior FUMC pastor, “they are behind before the first bell even rings. Help a child be successful in school and you will help them be successful in life.” Any individual, civic organization, church or business that wishes to help defray the costs of this program, a tax-deductible contribution can be sent to the First United Methodist Church with a notation on the memo line, “school supplies.” The church mailing address is 1615 N. Hwy. 88, Claremore, OK 74017. For more information, contact

Volunteers sort and sack school supplies for Rogers County schoolchildren in need. This will be the 16th year for Claremore First United Methodist Church to coordinate the Rogers County School Supply Drive, which has grown steadily since its inception. No one will be allowed to drive into the park except for handicap and motorcycle parking. “No pets are allowed in the park that day either,” says Kays. “It’s a great day for families to come out for the free entertainment and celebrate the 4th of July,” says David Daniel, park ranger, who is in charge of this year’s fishing derby. “We want everyone to come out and enjoy.” Through support from area

businesses and the community, the city is able to sponsor the fishing derby and the fireworks display at no charge to the public. “We couldn’t do it without the donations from the community and businesses,” says Kays. “We and the participants appreciate their continued support because it wouldn’t happen without them.”

New Fireworks Featured SSpectalur at the Castle The Castle of Muskogee offers 37,000 square feet of high-quality fireworks. By Renee Profitt The Castle of Muskogee, Oklahoma’s 37,000-square-foot fireworks showroom keeps working to improve everyone’s enjoyment on the Fourth. Although the Castle of Muskogee has always guaranteed all fireworks to light, the new, higher quality means no disappointments on the Fourth. “A new ‘look’ in fireworks for 2013 is the Big Top, a six row show with alternating red, white and blue tails to red, white

and blue stars with finale of cracling stars in 42 shots! Pearly Gates with pink and green glitter, crackling tails and whistles in 29 shots. The American Chief with crackling and blue goes through 10 different displays before ending in stars and double spinners. Other items that have never been seen in Oklahoma include: Wicked Cool, Glory Honor Power, Booby Trap, Phat Fire, Pyrotechnics Princess, Jesters

Celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks from The Castle of Muskogee.

Joke, Vampire’s Blood and 23 more! For better safety, the Castle joined the American Fireworks Standards Laboratory several years ago. AFSL is an independent testing organization that inspects fireworks before they leave China to assure safety. All fireworks, of course, must also pass inspection by the Consumer Product Safety Commission once they get to the United States. The new inspections procedures have resulted in a dramatic decrease in fireworks-related incidents in the U.S., even though fireworks imports have increased by many tons! The quantity and selection this year at the Castle must be seen to be believed: imagine a football field covered with fireworks as high as you can reach all under one roof, and you’ll get an idea of what awaits you in Muskogee. The Castle, of course, is air conditioned, with accessible restrooms and plenty of paved parking at the door. The annual fireworks sale lasts from June 15 through July 6. Hours are: June 15–30,

10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; July 1–4, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and July 5-6, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Castle of Muskogee has fireworks to please anyone, with prices for every budget. There are fireworks for smaller children plus more than 400 items for teens and adults including the largest selection in America of heavyweight and multi-action displays. Select from many versions of specially-priced Family Packs to get the most bang for your buck. Over a quarter-million people visit the Castle each year for a variety of events including the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, Haunted Castle, Christmas Kingdom, plus many weddings, private and corporate events. Guidelines for Fireworks Safety The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety offer the following safety checklist: • Always read and follow label directions. • Have an adult present. • Buy from reliable sellers. • Use outdoors only. • Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket). • Never experiment or make your own fireworks. • Light only one firework at a time. • Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 minutes then soak it in water). • Never give fireworks to small children. • If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place. • Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water before putting in the trash. • Never throw or point fireworks at other people. • Never carry fireworks in your pocket. • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. • The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework. • Stay away from illegal explosives.

Nutritional Supplements Can Give You an Edge Owasso Nutrition Plus offers clients education and advice about nutritional supplements.

By Susan Erler Doesn’t it seem as though there is a pill or a quick fix for anything you desire these days? This is especially true when it comes to the weight loss and the fitness industry. All you need to do is turn on the television to see ads and commercials filled with “magic” remedies. If they actually worked, why are we still a nation of overweight, under-

nourished, and lethargic citizens? Ask any true fitness expert and they will offer the same advice. Exercise more, get your nutrition in balance, feed your body with the proper nutrients, and prepare to be amazed at how great you look and feel. Owasso is home to one of the very best when it comes to educating clients on the proper

way to incorporate nutritional products into a life style for maximum benefits, and the best part is the cost of their products are far less than most of the big chain, “discount” stores. Adana Gittelman, owner of Fit For Her, located at 9500 N. 129th E Ave, Suite 300, in Owasso, realized a year ago that many of her clients were turning to other sources when it came to weight loss products or nutritional supplements. “It was frustrating to my customers and frustrating to me because most of the advice they received at these stores was coming from employees who were not educated in the products they carried and didn’t really understand how to utilize them in a proper combination in order to achieve amazing results.” Many would come to her facility and ask for advice but usually after they had already spent a large amount of money on products that just would not work. She and her husband Jason decided to utilize their background in the fitness world. They decided to open Owasso Nutrition Plus, selling the very best products out there at a

www.ValueNews.com significantly reduced cost. Since they began selling nutritionals, that side of their business has flourished. “Now, almost 25% of our daily revenue comes from our nutrition store,” explains Adana. “We always knew our clients were yearning for good products and for advice they could rely on. I mean, if we don’t guide them towards results, we know it! We see our customers several times a week so they would have let us know if our nutrition plan was not working! The sales numbers just prove it!” Price is one metric that sets them apart from the other supplement stores, and they hears positive comments every day. “We hear from so many people that we are the lowest price on the the products we sell and if someone finds a cheaper price, we will meet or beat it. We are committed to being the best source for the products everyone wants,” said Adana. But the biggest difference is still customer service. Owasso Nutrition Plus works hard each day educating clients and only recommending products that are necessary. They never try to over sell with extras that are not needed. It is this high level of integrity that makes customers trust them. “Integrity is everything to us,” states Jason. “We live what we preach and we always explain that even our products will only take them so far in achieving their fitness goals. At the end of the day, a healthy lifestyle including exercise, proper nutrition, rest, and a

healthy balance is the best prescription to a long and healthy life.” We are adamant in letting people know that you won’t find a magic pill or shake or protein bar that can take the place of a healthy lifestyle. You can’t find that in a bottle. You have to put in some effort and make intelligent choices with your supplements and all of them work together to create your best life. Every product that you need can be found at Owasso Nutrition Plus. They have the very best in pre and post workout products, protein bars and shakes, drinks that naturally increase your energy and so much more. Stopping by for a visit is really the only way to see everything they offer. And while you are there, take advantage of their vast knowledge and know that your questions are answered by people who know what they are talking about. Even if you are currently ordering a particular product online, Adana is sure they can beat the price you are paying. “Just give us the opportunity to prove to you how serious we are about helping our community become healthier and happier”. Owasso Nutrition Plus is open Monday-Friday from 10am to 8pm; Saturday from 10-3; and closed on Sundays. For more information, contact

Evening of Music AAn Under the Stars Starlight Concert Series warms up for a summer of free music at River West Festival Amphitheater. By Christopher Davis Orchestra, Signature Symphony and Bartlesville Symphony. The musical direction for both Starlight Bands is impressive and steeped in the Tulsa community. Dale Barnett, the Conductor and Musical Director for the Starlight Concert Band, has performed with the Starlight Band since 1971. He serves as the Director of Bands for Holland Hall and has played trombone in the Tulsa area for more than 30 years, 15 of which has found him with the Tulsa Philharmonic. Rich Fisher local celebrity to any avid NPR/KWGS listener - serves as Director for the Starlight Jazz Orchestra, and plays trombone, as well, with the Tulsa Philharmonic. Wendy Reed, Executive Director for Starlight Concerts, explains that her organization works hard to ensure Tulsa has opportunities to attend live concerts in a family-friendly setting. The best thing, she boasts, is that every Starlight Concert is free to the public. The Starlight

Every summer, the Starlight Concert Series brings quality, live music to diverse audiences in Tulsa. 2013 marks their 67th season of music and on Tuesday evenings at the River West Festival Amphitheater the Starlight Band offers something for everyone, no matter your taste. The Starlight Concert Series features two configurations of bands. The Starlight Concert Band, which performs the majority of the shows, is the larger of the two, comprised of over 45 musicians playing brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. The Starlight Jazz Orchestra is a smaller version of the Concert Band (about 20 members) and features drums, bass, guitar and piano in addition to the brass, woodwinds and percussion sections. The Starlight Band features some of the best players in town. It is common for Starlight musicians to perform in some of the other local orchestras, including the Tulsa Symphony

Band relies on sponsors and donations in order to produce a series that remains free and upholds the highest standards of musicianship. “The Starlight Band is one of only a handful of professional concert bands in the United States,” Ms. Reed points out. “Tulsa is probably the smallest town in the U.S. with a professional concert band. This is, really, a unique opportunity for Tulsans.” Ms. Reed explains that, every season, the Starlight Concert series strives to present a broad spectrum of music for their audience, “Material ranges from well-known patriotic tunes to jazz, to light classics and even some pop.” This season is no disappointment. The Starlight Jazz Orchestra will kick off the series with a showcase of the greatest hits of the Big Band Era. Throughout July, the Starlight Concert Band will feature music that dwells on a different theme each week. Ms. Reed notes that, among her

favorites this year is the July 9th concert, “A Year of Music.” In this, the Concert Band will perform selections of music that relate to the different months of the year. Another favorite in July is the return of “A Night at the Movies,” in which the Concert Band will perform, afterwards, a projected silent movie is screened accompanied by live theater organ music. “This year’s selection,” Ms. Reed says, “is the Buster Keaton film One Week.” Reed’s enthusiasm for this production is contagious. Where else can you bring the family or a date and – for free – attend a professional

concert production in your own neighborhood? Throughout July, you can attend the Starlight Concert Series at the River West Festival Amphitheater. Show dates are July 9, 16, and 23. All concerts begin at 8p.m. You can find more information, including directions, times and dates of each concert online at www.starlightbands.net. For more information, contact
