Upscale Mexican Cuisine Arriving in Claremore El Banquete Mexican Grille will offer upscale dining in a relaxed atmosphere. By Carol Beck-Round Claremore and the surrounding area is in for a treat when the doors of El Banquete Mexican Grille open this summer in the former Pepper’s Grill, located at 1331 W. Will Rogers Blvd. What will set El Banquete Mexican Grille apart from other area restaurants offering Mexican cuisine? “The first thing that sets us apart,” says Chef Armando Cobian, “will be the food and menu selection. El Banquete Mexican Grille will also be more upscale.” According to Chef Cobian, most restaurants offering
Mexican fare use two different sauces for over 150 dishes, whether it is chicken or steak. “Our food is different, with each dish having its own signature sauce.” On the new restaurant menu will be salads and desserts that “have never before been seen in this town,” says Cobian who has 22 years experience as a chef. “This is a new style of Mexican cooking but is authentic,” says the Mexico native who moved to the United States when he was 15 years old. Cobian’s career as a chef
started at a Mexican restaurant in Chicago. However, it wasn’t authentic Mexican fare, so he moved on, pursuing his passion for good food and eventually attending the Washburne Culinary Institute in Chicago, where he graduated in 1999. His training and background led him to various states, including Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Washington D.C., where he helped 42 restaurants revamp their menus to reflect finer dining and original Mexican cuisine. Kaleb Summers likes a challenge. He confesses to being an adrenaline junkie. In high school, he wrestled, then earned a college scholarship as a steer wrestler; however, bad knees ended his dreams in the rodeo arena. He also fought professionally as a cage fighter. Seeking another outlet for his high-energy personality, the Claremore resident began thinking about his dad’s previous passion for noodling, a unique way of catching monster catfish with bare hands in rivers and lakes. Noodling is an ancient practice, dating back to the Native Americans who passed on their fishing technique to early settlers. No bait or rod is used. Summers’ passion for learning more about this unusual Midwestern American sport led
him to southeastern Oklahoma, where family friends taught him the basics of noodling, or hillbilly hand-fishin’. “I had to

THE POWER OF MONEY BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
I find the power that money often has over people to be absolutely intriguing. The ebb and flow of this powerful currency and its dynamic energy to forcefully captivate the hearts and minds of people is mind-blowing. Think about it! Money (this piece of paper, coin, plastic card, these numbers scrolling across a ticker, and all that it represents), we often allow to control us. In my 11 years of practicing marriage and family therapy, the number one presenting issue between couples in my office was money. Still today, I have folks fighting in my office about money. Money causes the most diverse display of emotions I have ever seen ranging from fear, elation, anxiety, anger, joy, embarrassment, jealousy, disdain, insecurity, guilt, shame…..and I could go on and on, really! Divorces, war, murder all in the name of money. It is quite amazing how many facets of our life we tie to the almighty dollar. Amen?! The next time you find yourself overwhelmed by money, stop!
You have control over your thoughts. You have control over your feelings. What you think about your relationship to money, and what you tell yourself about dealing with it is entirely up to you. You can make of your situation whatever you choose it to be. If you find yourself in a bad mood, think about what you’ve been thinking about and decide to think differently! One thing I know for sure, if you choose to focus on the negative, dwell on the problems, entrench yourself amongst the obstacles, then my friends you will stay stuck! You will stay miserable. And if you don’t watch it, you will be broke to boot. You have to focus on what’s in front of you, not what’s behind you. You must be committed to
finding solutions and alternatives, not dwelling on the past. If you focus on the pickle you’re in, you will continue to be in the pickle you’re in. If you focus on the wall you’re about to hit, that is certainly where you will end up. Focus on where you want to go and steer in that direction. The absolutely incredible thing about the human mind is that we have control over the choices we make including what we choose to think and feel. Do not be afraid! Instead look for opportunities. “Eighty percent of America’s millionaires are first generation rich. Do smart stuff, and you can be one of them.” 1 If you need help with your investments, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. 5 Ways to Protect Your Money While Traveling Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Denise Meyer You’ve been saving for your vacation all year. You’ve scheduled time off, made your travel arrangements; you’re packed and ready to go. Have you called your bank to tell them where and when you’re going? By doing so they can watch your account for suspicious activity, letting you relax and enjoy the trip. Denise Meyer is Assistant VP of the Corporate Fraud Department at RCB Bank. She is responsible for monitoring debit card activity, analyzing fraud trends and writing policy changes to block fraud attempts and try and stop the bad guys. She offers some other tips to help protect your money while traveling this summer: When talking to your bank about your travel plans, verify they have your current contact information. I want to protect my customers. If I suspect suspicious activity on their account, I need to be able to call them to find out if it’s fraudulent. If I can’t get in touch with the account owner, I may put a block on their debit card. Better safe than sorry. It’s a good habit to contact your bank and credit card
companies before traveling. Tell them your travel dates, states and/or countries you’re traveling through, and when you expect to return. Make sure they have a current cell number, email address or
way to reach you while you’re away. Set up email alerts through online banking to notify you of account transactions. An example may be to set up an alert to

notify you of unusual activity on your account. Another way to watch your account on the go is by using our free apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. You can scan daily transactions securely from your personal phone (not a public computer), and if you see anything suspicious, you can act quickly. Have a backup money plan. If you’re using plastic while on your trip, what’s the plan if your card is ever rejected? Plan for backup methods of payments, such as cash, traveler’s checks, money orders or prepaid VISA cards. Tip – if you are using your debit card and it’s rejected, you may be able to complete a transaction by using your PIN. Banks may block some states or countries from allowing signature swipes (run as credit) for security reasons to protect your account. Using your debit card keeps your personal account information safe. When a debit card transaction is processed, no identifiable account or personal information is given to the merchant. If your debit card is lost or stolen, don’t panic; you won’t have to close your account. Call your bank; they’ll cancel the old card, reissue you a new one and watch for fraudulent activity. A good rule of thumb when traveling is to use a credit card instead of your debit card (especially when overseas). Always assume others are watching you. Don’t give fraudsters a reason to target you. Don’t leave your credit card with a merchant (for a tab) who could easily snap a copy of the card with a phone camera. When
Page 5
swiping your card, make sure no one is looking over your shoulder when entering the PIN. Also, beware of any devices that may be attached to a card reader. If anything on the reader looks suspicious, don’t use it. If you suspect fraud, act quickly. Fraudsters know the clock is ticking. If your credit/debit card is lost or stolen, contact your bank immediately. If traveling overseas, you might consider leaving card information and copies of your passport and ID’s with a trusted friend. If personal identifiable information (social security #, date of birth) is stolen, file a fraud alert with one of the three credit bureaus: Equifax, 1-888-766-0008; Experian, 1-888-397-3742; TransUnion, 1-888-909-8872. PPutting for a Cause Steaks and Sticks celebrates 10 years of helping Rogers County Youth. By Carol Beck-Round Two organizations dedicated to helping area youth reach their full potential are celebrating their 10th annual Steaks and Sticks Golf Tournament on Friday, June 21 at the Heritage Hills Golf Course in Claremore. The Claremore Zebra Sports Foundation and Rogers County Youth Services joined forces a decade ago to bring awareness to the two programs and the impact they have in the community.
Funds from the four-person scramble are used to support the goals and missions of each organization, benefiting the youth of Rogers County. According to Herb McSpadden, RCYS director, the two groups decided to partner their resources and get more bang for their buck. RCYS is a private, nonprofit United Way agency and part of a network of 41 youth
service agencies across the state of Oklahoma since 1976. “The tournament helps fill in the 20 percent funding gap in our services that is not provided through state and area grants,” McSpadden says. “At RCYS, we serve kids from all over the state, including Tulsa. Since a golf tournament fit in with the philosophy of both organizations of encouraging our youth to get outdoors, we thought it was a

good fit. Also, one of the event organizers serves on both of the organization’s boards.” Sean Cox, a board member and event coordinator, explains, “The Claremore Zebra Sport’s Foundation mission is to purchase and provide any equipment that helps with athletic conditioning and injury prevention training. We also help by offering education programs for coaches and staff.” Individuals and businesses can get involved in the annual event by either entering a four-man team or becoming a sponsor of the event. “It’s a great vehicle for the community and Rogers County to support two totally youth-oriented programs and have fun at the same time,” says Cox. “It’s also one of the best attended benefit golf tournaments at Heritage Hills, with more than 100 individuals joining in for a worthy cause.” To help raise funds for the cause, a four-person scramble team can enter for $75 per individual or $300 per team, which includes breakfast and lunch. All donations and sponsorships are tax-deductible. This is a shotgun start event with all teams beginning play at 8:30 a.m. Space is limited for the morning start time, so participants are encouraged to reserve their team early. Teams wishing to play in the afternoon can sign up for tee times, which will begin at 1 p.m. “The shotgun start allows the entire group of golfers to enjoy social time before the event and then afterwards as we eat lunch and

watch the live on-site broadcast of ‘The Sports Animal.’ Al Jerkins and Pat Jones are always entertaining and enjoy visiting with those in attendance,” says Bret McGuire, event coordinator. Golfers can also look forward to winning prizes during a drawing based on the mulligans purchased. In the past, lawnmowers, weed eaters, golf bags and clubs as well as a round of golf for four at Patricia Island have been given away. Sponsorships for the annual event are available, including Hole Sponsor, $110; Lunch Sponsor, $750; Breakfast Sponsor, $200; Corporate Sponsor (6) at $600 or Corporate Sponsor and team, $750. Sponsorships selling fast include The Sports Animal Radio Sponsor – only five are available – for $1,000 or radio sponsor and a team at $1,200. This sponsorship includes airtime, speaking with the radio hosts and promoting your business. “This is one of the most listened to sport talk shows in Oklahoma,” says Dave Bethea, a RCYS board member. TTaking Away the Pain Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient return to her active lifestyle. By Carol Beck-Round A trip to Minnesota in September, 2011 to visit relatives for a month left Claremore resident Barbara Moonen in pain – so much pain that it affected her sleep and her regular exercise routine. “Shortly after returning from the trip, I began to have pain in my right leg,” says Barbara. “It was a constant irritation and I didn’t know how the two were related – the drive to and from Minnesota and the pain.” Barbara turned to Ibuprofen and an ice pack on the affected knee to relieve the pain. “I purchased the wrap-around ice pack designed especially for knee pain when I was getting some custom orthotics made for my walking shoes. It provided temporary relief.” During a routine physical the following April with her primary care physician, Dr. Dwight J. Korgan, Barbara mentioned her leg pain. “He didn’t think it was my knee but my back that was causing the problem,” she said. “I didn’t think it was my back, but Dr. Korgan thought the long drive I had taken to and from Minnesota was the cause of the
Dr. Korgan ordered X-rays of Barbara’s back, which revealed arthritis. However, after an MRI to discover the root of the problem, she learned that the very last vertebra in her back was pinching a nerve. “Dr. Korgan said I had three options,” she says. “Do nothing, have surgery or try spinal decompression therapy.” Barbara knew she couldn’t

I thought stress might be causing my problem.” Barbara has always been active. “I exercise a lot, including
walking and weights.” The pain led to cutting back on her walking routine. “I just couldn’t walk as much. I kept cutting back from my normal three miles a day until I was only walking one mile,” she says. Eventually, she took up riding a stationary bicycle at the Claremore Recreation Center. “It didn’t hurt my knee like walking did,” she adds.

continue with the pain. “I wasn’t sleeping,” she said. “I had to do something but surgery wasn’t an option I wanted to consider. I knew others who had chosen that route and it hadn’t worked—at least for them.” Spinal Decompression proved to be the answer. For two weeks, Barbara went in daily for her 45-minute treatment. back. “Eventually, I was doing so well that Dr. Korgan agreed that I didn’t have to complete the entire course,” she adds. “He did give me four different back stretching exercises to do daily for the rest of my life. I do two sets of ten when I get up in the morning.” Barbara found relief from her pain after the fourth visit. While there is no pain during the actual treatment, Moonen said she used an ice pack on her lower back after the treatment for the first few times. “It wasn’t really pain but more of an ache,” she says. “I also had to take it easy during this time so my husband took over a lot of the housework for me.” According to Barbara, “The staff at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma is not only helpful but nice. They couldn’t be any better.” She is so pleased with her results that she is back exercising at the Rec Center and has already referred several others to the office. “I tell them to at least check into spinal decompression if they are in pain.” To find out more about Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, check out their website at www.SDOBack.com or call (918) 341-1250. TTee Off to Support Catoosa Businesses Catoosa Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its 13th annual golf tournament. By Cassie Woods For 13 years, the Catoosa Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament has drawn hundreds of golfers who love the game and enjoy supporting local businesses. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, June 7, at Cherokee Hills Golf Club in Catoosa. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the tournament will have a shot-gun start at 8:30 a.m. The format will be a four-person scramble and the registration cost is $125 per individual player or $500 per team. Golfers will enjoy lunch at the clubhouse after their round of golf, paid golf, green and cart fees, as well as great prize drawings. Plus, the golfer lucky enough to be named the firstplace winner will walk away with a $600 cash prize. Other cash prizes will be awarded as follows: $400 to the second place winner and $200 to the third place winner. There will also be $50 Visa gift cards given to the players with the longest drive, straightest drive and closest to the pin. The Hole-In-One prize will be $15,000 in cash! In addition to the golf
awards, there will be several prize drawings. The great door prizes up for grabs include rounds of golf for four at Battle Creek Golf Club, Forrest Ridge Golf Course, Cherokee Hills Golf Course and The Golf Club of Oklahoma, as well a Deluxe Oil Change at Catoosa Kwik Lube. “We still have some
unconfirmed prizes coming in as well,” said Glenna Scott, Catoosa Chamber representative. “We are excited about this year’s event and are confident it will be a tournament golfers won’t want to miss.” The planning committee members for the golf tournament are Brad Ward,

Lesley Vincent, Maryann Dunn, Troy Anderson, Glenna Scott, Debbie Snellings, Penny Chambers, Stephanie Johnson and Delayna Trease. They have been working hard to organize a great event for golfers who wish to participate and are looking forward to providing business representatives an opportunity to get to know one another better. “My favorite thing about this event is the networking opportunity it provides,” said Scott. “It gives area business owners a chance to mingle and get to know one another outside of the office environment. But it also helps them establish connections between businesses to see how they can help each other be more successful.” In addition to registering a golf team, individuals and businesses can show their support in other ways by donating door prize items, or sponsoring a team for $500 or a golf hole for $100. All proceeds from the tournament directly benefit the Catoosa Chamber of Commerce and its business support efforts. “We are expecting anywhere
from 80 to 108 golfers,” said Scott. “We have already reached our goal on tournament sponsorships, but we do still have openings for team entries and hole sponsorships.” Tournament sponsors include Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Cox Business, CMC Recycling, Cowen Construction, Lloyd and Cindy Robson, RCB Bank, Reasor’s, Catoosa Small Animal Hospital, and LaQuinta Inn and Suites. To register a team or sign up for a sponsorship at the 13th annual Catoosa Chamber Golf Tournament, contact Glenna Scott at (918) 266-6042 or by email at catoosachamber@gmail.com. Social Security Disability Law: “It’s All We Do.” Social Security Law Center believes local representation is the best representation.

Social Security Disability Law. “It’s all we do,” said Teresa Grasso, Managing Attorney for the Tulsa Office. “We help our clients get disability benefits.” According to Ms. Grasso, there are a lot of law firms requiring that the client has been denied disability before the firm will consider taking the case. Unlike other firms, Social Security Law Center prefers to be involved from the very beginning, before you’ve ever filed a claim. Social Security Law Center believes that local representation is the best representation and it should always be convenient for clients to visit with their attorney. That’s why the firm has offices in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Bartlesville and Miami. The company’s attorneys have over 40 years of combined experience and choose to keep case loads small to ensure that each client gets the attention they deserve. The Tulsa office serves the Tulsa Metropolitan Area and surrounding areas. Ms. Grasso grew up in south Tulsa and graduated from Jenks High School. She attended the University of Oklahoma where she graduated with distinction in
2001 and was bestowed with the honor of receiving the Maehl Award. In 2004, Ms. Grasso graduated with distinction from the OU College of Law with two academic achievement awards. While in Law School, she served as the business manager of the Oklahoma Journal of Law and Technology and was a member of the American Indian Law Review. She is also a graduate of the Interdisciplinary Training Program through the University of Oklahoma Health and Science Center College of Medicine. She is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, Northern District of Oklahoma, Eastern District of Oklahoma, and the 10th Circuit US Court of Appeals. She is a member of the Tulsa Interagency Council (TIC) and the National Organization of Social Security Claimant’s Representatives (NOSSCR). A frequent featured speaker at seminars, support groups, and mental health facilities in the Tulsa Metro Area, Ms. Grasso explains and discusses matters relating to Social Security disability benefits. tion of her clients, Ms. Grasso has won hundreds of cases. Her comprehensive knowledge of Social Security law coupled with diligent development of her cases has made her one of the top representatives in the Tulsa area. “I have a very enjoyable and rewarding job,” says Ms. Grasso. She has been at Social Security Law Center for eight years and loves making clients happy by helping keep them from losing their homes, keeping them out of foreclosure, helping the homeless get housing, and helping ensure that clients get the medical assistance they need. “We have a great support staff and when you call, a real person will answer the phone. And if a case necessitates, we’ll take it all the way to Federal Court,” she adds. Your case always stays inhouse with the Social Security Law Center. “You’re not just a number with us, but quite the opposite,” said Ms. Grasso. “If you have a need for Social Security Disability representation, please contact us.” Your initial visit is free and there are no obligations. “You pay a fee only if we win your case.” Call or visit the website for more information.

IImpacting Lives on a Daily Basis Goodwill Industries of Tulsa had a banner year in 2012. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has been a good steward of the community resources entrusted to them. More than 380,000 donations were received by Goodwill Donation Centers in the Tulsa area last year, and Goodwill was able to hire, train and place more people with barriers to employment than any time in its 86-year history. Goodwill is proud of the tremendous impact it has on individuals. Goodwill offers multiple services to area businesses and contracts with local hospitals to provide document shredding, cardboard baling and custodial services. Through these services, participants learn valuable, real-world work skills. Goodwill also provides job training and placement and retention services for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment. Many earn meaningful jobs that allow them to become self-sufficient, improve their self-esteem and become productive elements in our economy. Goodwill recognizes outstanding participant accomplishments at an annual Awards Luncheon. Master of Ceremonies for the 2013 event was David Oliver, president,
Goodwill Industries of Tulsa. Presentations were emceed by Kristen Dickerson, charming evening news anchor of KTUL. Graduate of the Year honors went to Alex Jackson. Alex came to Goodwill as a high school
training, Alex participated in the ASD Transition Services pilot program with a curriculum specifically designed to assist in workplace etiquette. He learned to interpret social cues, facial expressions and non-verbal

Having been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) he was extremely shy, but was clearly bright, positive and focused. After completing
communication while becoming more independent and selfconfident. Alex is now employed in a courtesy clerk position with Reasor’s. His employers say he is a model employee with a very positive attitude. Sue Massey received Employee of the Year honors. In
May of 2007, Sue’s case manager recommended that she pursue work opportunities available through Goodwill, feeling she would be a perfect fit for the enclaves – small work groups of supported workers – that Goodwill operates at local hospitals. From the beginning, she showed a willingness to do whatever it took to get her job done and a dedication to do it right, always with a big smile. Sue’s positive attitude and strong work ethic quickly got her a fulltime position with Goodwill’s cleaning enclave at St. John Medical Center. There she has learned new tasks and is doing an excellent job. She has a great attitude and is well respected by staff and co-workers. Achiever of the Year was presented to Regina Hawk. “The Life Skills Class helped change my perspective and I refused to be broken,” said Regina. Regina attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and finished her education at Oklahoma State University, earning a bachelor’s degree. When everything seemed to be going perfectly, her world began collapsing. Regina was unable to find a job in her field as an educator, went through a devastating divorce, and found
herself frustrated and in financial desperation. She found herself a stay-at-home mom of two, struggling to make it, and was soon homeless and alone. While at the homeless shelter, she noticed a flyer from Goodwill and enrolled in their Life Skills Class. Almost instantly, she discovered a feeling of hope. After only ten weeks, she began interviewing and was able to secure a job as an educator. “Because of the people at Goodwill, I have my life back,” said Regina. Community Parnter of the Year honors went to Mary Thomas, representing Consumer Credit Counseling of Tulsa. Mary has taught money management courses at Goodwill for 16 years. Thanks to the Tulsa community for their caring attitude and participation in the many Goodwill Industries of Tulsa programs and services.

DDisability Insurance Often Overlooked State Farm Insurance Agent David Merriman explains the importance of disability insurance and protecting your income. By Lorrie Ward When you walk into David Merriman’s office and look directly to your right, you will see a mahogany colored shelf filled with memorabilia from David’s life and, most prominently, photos of his family. This shelf represents the
things that are important to David and is directly visible from his desk, keeping him ever mindful of his priorities and the things he wants and needs to protect. As a State Farm agent, David wants to help clients be

mindful of their own priorities as well and “expect the unexpected” when they consider what types of insurance they need. One question he would encourage people to ask themselves is what would happen to their family if they were to become disabled. “Americans are aware that they need to insure their cars, homes, and other valuable possessions,” David notes. “But they often overlook insuring their most valuable asset – their income. That’s what short term disability insurance does.” Disability insurance provides monthly payments to a person who has become unable to work as a result of sickness or injury, and is thought by many in the insurance and financial planning industry to be the most neglected line of insurance coverage. David points out that many people who are employed by companies or corporations with group benefits offer group disability to employees, but most self-employed people never give the matter a second thought. Statistically, this puts the aforementioned most valuable asset at great risk, since research
from the Social Security Administration shows that one quarter of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before they retire. “A lot of people believe that Social Security disability will cover them if they become disabled,” David says, noting many conversations he has had with clients who have tried to apply for Social Security disability benefits. “The process is so difficult – it can take one to two years to get approved, and that’s if you get approved. The definitions are very strict.” David observes that people truly do love and care about their families when they consider insurance, but have not always given extensive thought to all of the possibilities of what could happen if something were to happen to the breadwinner. “One of the hardest things is getting people to understand the need to insure themselves – and this includes both life and disability insurance.” To illustrate how much not protecting earning potential can cost a person, David uses the example of a 40-year-old who makes $50,000 a year and plans
to retire at 67 years old. If that person dies or is disabled and unable to earn until retirement age, that translates to $1.35 million in lost income. While disability insurance does not completely cover all lost income, it will help to cover H.U.G., an acronym used by the insurance industry to refer to the basic essentials needed to live: house (rent), utilities (heat, electricity) and groceries (food on the table). “With disability insurance, you are insuring your paycheck,” David points out. To visit with David about your insurance portfolio and how you would like to protect the things represented on your own shelf of photos and memorabilia, call (918) 342-3266 for an appointment.

PPain-Free Knees, Please Kathy Stone of Poteau now lives without knee pain after two total knee replacements from Dr. LaButti. By Joshua Danker-Dake In the last year, Kathy Stone, of Poteau, has had both knees replaced by Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. “I’ve had knee problems forever,” says Kathy, a former floral and interior designer who now works in her husband’s chiropractic practice. “Everything I did would cause horrible pain and swelling, and it just kept getting worse. I knew that something had to be done or else I would probably end up in a wheelchair, and at 58, that
was not an option.” Kathy researched new robotic knee replacement procedures, and found that Dr. LaButti offered what she was looking for. Dr. LaButti offers computer-navigated robotic total knee replacement, which maps the patient’s knee joint without preoperative CT or MRI scans and allows Dr. LaButti to determine the size and position of the implant before making any bone cuts. This procedure can increase accuracy for implant placement, make implants last longer, and reduce recovery time. Kathy had her right knee replaced via this method in August of 2012. “I was amazed at how quickly I healed,” she says. “Even the pain I had after surgery was much less than the pain I’d been living with for so long.” Six months later, Kathy’s right knee was pain-free, she says. She had her left knee replaced in January, again using this procedure. “The results are just as good as before. I’m walking great without a cane, crutches, or a walker.” Kathy says she was also very satisfied with her pre-surgery
experience with Dr. LaButti. “I was surprised at how quickly I got an appointment, and Dr. LaButti was straightforward and to the point. I was impressed with how quickly everything was set up.” Kathy says, “In my chiropractic office, we have a lot of patients with the same problems I had. They are amazed at how well I have done, and often want to know who did my surgeries. I enthusiastically recommend Dr. LaButti to our patients, and I know that they will get the best care and treatment. I’m grateful to Dr. LaButti and his great staff for the wonderful care I received.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com.

tunes and dances ready for this exciting weekend of entertainment. Register or purchase tickets online at www.grandlakefestivals.com. The public is invited to the Kick-off Party and Cook-Out at Snider’s Campground just south of Grove on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees on Thursday night and again on Friday night for another evening of delicious food and great entertainment. Admission to the campground entertainment is free. Food will be available to purchase. Great entertainment is being planned for the entire weekend, with daytime events and Saturday night concert held in Grove Civic Center and evening activities on Thursday and Friday nights at Snider’s Camp. Jana Jae, founder of Grand Lake Festivals, and her family and friends will perform throughout the weekend, in addition to Jim Garling, Russ Weeks and the Dalton Gang, Duke Mason plus many other talented entertainers. Back by popular demand as headliner, Jim Paul Blair brings Hank Williams to life in “Hankerin’ 4 Hank,” tribute to
Hank Williams and his band, the Drifting Cowboys, as they bring the story and hits of Hank Williams just as they were performed in 1952, complete with doghouse bass, honky-tonk guitar, steel guitar and fiddle that defined the music of the Williams era. In addition to the authentic sound, Hank’s clothing for the tribute is an original creation made especially for this project. Jim Blair directs this group but is joined on stage with talented musicians, promising a great show that will create a wonderful nostalgic feeling. This show always receives rave reviews. On Friday, June 7, the fiddle contestants will begin competing with top-notch musicians all vying for monetary prizes. Cloggers will join the activities on Saturday at 10 a.m. with dancers competing in many categories, from Line Dance to Flatfoot Competition. The festival’s new clogging contest coordinators, Ken and Lisa Beach, are excited about bringing some of the top dancers to the Grand Lake area. Winners in both competitions will be featured at the Saturday night concert. Ken, Lisa and their son, Kevin, will offer clogging workshops and demonstrations on Friday, June 7 at the Civic Center. Contact lisa@kenettek.com for more info. You can purchase your tickets early at First National Bank in Grove or Gallery Southwest, 10th and Main in Grove, by calling (918) 786-8896, or online at

Upscale Mexican Cuisine Arriving in Claremore So how did Chef Armando Cobian, who has also cooked for President Obama before he reached the White House, end up in northeastern Oklahoma? A mutual friend connected Cobian with local restaurateur Jose Bravo, who began remodeling the former Pepper’s Grill earlier this year. Bravo was looking to add new and more authentic dishes to the menu and make the restaurant different from others in the area. “I wanted a different concept,” says Bravo. Cobain flew to Oklahoma to meet with Bravo and agreed to assist him in planning the menu for El Banquete. Cobian will be training the chefs at the new restaurant, not only in Claremore,
but also at Bravo’s new restaurant in Tulsa and one in the state of Kansas. “They will be trained to prepare these new authentic dishes,” he adds. “I will also be checking each restaurant for quality as well as keeping the menus up-to-date,” says Cobian, who retreats each year to his home in Mexico to try out new dishes. The atmosphere, according to Cobian, will also be different from other Mexican restaurants. “Although the lunch crowd will still be able to get their food in a timely manner so they can return to work, the dinner crowd will find a more relaxed atmosphere with dinner and drinks,” he says. “I have a recipe for a cucumber and watermelon margarita that
is made fresh,” he adds. “There are no additives and no chemicals in the drink.” Cobian promises a menu of choices to surprise everyone, including seafood dishes like Camarones al mojo de ajo, a shrimp and sweet roasted garlic dish, and pasta dishes with a Mexican flair. “We will also offer at least a dozen different salsas,” he says, “as well as desserts like cheesecake wrapped in a crispy flour tortilla and garnished with mango, green apple tarts with vanilla ice cream, fried ice cream and traditional flan.” The restaurant will seat between 150 and 160 people and will include a separate dining room for private parties. In addition, an outdoor area is under con-
World’s Richest Noodling Tournament Coming to Claremore mouths,” says Summers. “When I returned home, I went through a lot of trial and error before it all finally clicked.” When it did click for Summers, he became “hooked.” Summers, along with his team members – L.J. Parks, Joel Parks, Dillon Owen, Colby Owen and Brandon Bedient – know how to discover a catfish hole, then submerge under the water and wait for the catfish to bite a hand. When the flathead latches on to the noodler’s hand, spotters then assist by helping to put a stringer in the thick jaws. “It’s not for the claustrophobic,” says Summers. “When you’re underwater trying to noodle a monster fish, it can get pretty tight.” In 2012, the team of six entered the annual Okie Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Going into the tournament, Summers and his team were determined to walk away with the prize. “We only had to catch one fish,” says
Summers, “and it had to be the biggest.” Perseverance, skill and luck paid off when Summers and his team noodled a trophy catch and set a record at the tournament with a 70-pound flathead. However, according to Summers, the monster catfish put up a fight that required the six to literally “bear hug and wrestle her to the shoreline.” After the big win and the ensuing publicity, Summers knew he wanted to start his own noodling competition in northeastern Oklahoma. With his dad’s encouragement and community support, Summers launched “Battle of the Big Cats: Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown,” which will debut June 14-15 at the Claremore Expo Center. “We are doubling the prize money offered at Pauls Valley,” he says. “I wanted northeastern Oklahoma to have their own competition and make it one of the best.”
Over $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded at the event. With a trade show, noodling demonstrations, live entertainment, a fish fry, family activities and “Money the Hard Way for the Ladies in the Tank,” the event promises lots of excitement for all ages and both genders. With a $50 per person entry fee, noodlers are limited to turning in their largest catfish. A top prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the winner. Prize money will be paid out to the top three fish. Contestant entries, rules, regulations and vendor registrations can be found at www.visitclaremore.org or www.stoadventures.net. Registration forms must be completed and returned with the entry fee by June 12, either by mail or in person at the Claremore Expo Center office. The tournament begins on June 13. El Banquete Mexican Grille is a very different concept for Claremore, he explains. “Although we will be upscale with authentic Mexican food, the prices are affordable,” says Cobian, “And the food will always be fresh.”

movements for upper, lower and mid body. They are also great for people with arthritis, bad posture, poor circulation and neuropathy. Toning tables allow the user to go through the motion with little effort, still improving muscle tone and strength. “The toning tables are great because they allow our clients to reduce unwanted inches without strenuous workouts or starvation diets,” said Debby. “They combine the principles of physical and isometric movements without the strain or fatigue you would feel during regular exercise.” Clara and Debby were first exposed to this type of exercise in the 70s when they regularly visited a facility owned by LaNelle Hammett in Claremore. Using the toning tables at that location, the mother-daughter pair lost a combined total of 30 inches. “It was exactly what we needed at the time, and we saw great results,” said Clara. “So when LaNelle sold her business, Debby bought three tables from her in 1999 to put in her salon.” The tables were a good fit in the salon, but after a location change, Debby sold the tables a few years later. When Clara decided to join the new business venture, newer tables were purchased and they opened Classy Curves. In addition to the toning tables, Classy Curves also features a VibaBody Slimmer. This machine moves the body from top to bottom to increase circulation and bone density and provide a full body workout. It helps firm and tone both skin and muscles, fight cellulite, and reduce pain and stiffness. “It basically does the
same thing that the toning tables do,” said Debby. “It just allows you to work your entire body at the same time, as opposed to targeting a specific area with each table.” Also connected to the facility is a salon offering facials, microdermabrasion and a massage therapist, as well as a full line of whole food nutrition. For more information on the nutrition line, visit www.classynutrition.com. Located one mile west of Westside School in Claremore, Classy Curves is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. No appointments are necessary. “We recommend a client visit Classy Curves at least three times a week, but prefer five,” said Clara. “Of course, the more you come, the better results you’ll get. We are usually busiest early in the morning, around the noon hour and then right after most people get off work. But we are always able to accommodate our customers.” Classy Curves does not require a longterm contract. Clients can purchase one of three monthly plans for anywhere between $21.27 and $49.94. They can also pay per visit for as low as $2.66 per session. Classy Curves also offers a discounted rate to first-time visitors. For more information, contact

CChalk It Up! Artists will be chalking the streets of Broken Arrow’s Rose District June 7 and 8.
By Duane Blankenship “Chalk It Up!” is the colorful and inspired Broken Arrow art festival that received the Award of Excellence in 2012 from the State of Oklahoma Recreation & Parks Society. This award is scored on many specifics including originality, funding sources, inter-agency cooperation and non-profit organization
involvement. Last year marked the inauguration of this Broken Arrow Main Street event. Broken Arrow Parks Department Events Coordinator David Blue and local entrepreneur and Your Design owner Alisa Inglett have worked diligently to bring Chalk It Up! back for a repeat performance.
David Blue and Alisa Inglett have worked hard to bring the 2nd annual “Chalk It Up!” to Broken Arrow, presented by the Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council and Broken Arrow Parks & Recreation Department.
This year’s festival will feature more artists, entertainers, vendors and extended hours in continuing the trend of excellence. “The 2013 Chalk It Up! festival will be the first event ever to be held in the recently appointed Rose District of downtown Broken Arrow,” said David. David became interested in hosting a “chalk” event in Broken Arrow when he found information on 3-D art and artists who were doing their chalk creations in Venice, California several years ago. As with so many trends, chalk art first become popular on both the east and west coasts. As the years have passed, more communities in the heart of the country have hosted events. David and Alisa put their heads together to come up with Broken Arrow’s creative and entertaining Chalk It Up! festival in the heart of downtown Broken Arrow, and the rest is history. Chalk It Up! is brought to our community by the Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council and Broken Arrow Parks & Recreation Department. The festival begins Friday evening, June 7, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. It will continue Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free, open to the public, and will entertain the entire family. Artists will be creating their art in the middle of Main Street in downtown Broken Arrow between Dallas and Commercial. Alisa says, “Artists are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild as they ‘Chalk It Up!’ in the new

Rose District.” Artists representing three age groups from 6 years to adult will have the opportunity to compete in four categories including Masters, Animation, 3-D and Artist’s Choice. Each category will be awarded first, second and third place prizes. There will also be a Best of Show Award and a People’s Choice Award, for a total of 11 possible award winners. Age categories are: 6-11 years, 12-17 years, and 18+ (adult). For more specific information about registration and rules, please call Alisa Inglett at (918) 994-4473 or visit the event’s Facebook page. Artist registration fee is $20. Each competing artist or team of four will receive a festival T-shirt, chalk, water, a light lunch and gift bags from local Main Street business owners. Event judging, including the People’s Choice Award, will commence at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded immediately after judging is completed.

Bill Knight Lincoln Receives President’s Award For the second time, the dealership was honored for its excellence in sales and service.
By Duane Blankenship survey taken by customers of the dealership. Bill Knight Lincoln staff members have consistently shown excellence in sales and service. “We always work hard as a team,” said Service Manager Kelly Casey, “and the President’s Award reflects on each person in every department that represents our dealership. From receptionist, salespeople, Internet staff, service advisors and technicians, office staff, parts and body shop staff – everyone must do their part to provide superior customer satisfaction.” Kelly adds stability to Bill Knight Lincoln customer service with 18 years in the profession. Bill Knight Lincoln, located at 41st and Memorial, was awarded Ford Motor Company’s coveted President’s Award for 2012. This is the second time the dealership has won the recognition award for its excellence in sales and service. The award is presented to top Lincoln dealerships throughout the country, and Bill Knight Lincoln has always been recognized as one of the premier automobile dealerships in Oklahoma. They were one of only three in the state to receive the award. The unique thing about receiving the President’s Award is that selection is based upon results from a comprehensive

The national average to the question was 61 percent. When asked if they trusted their dealership, nearly 80 percent said they did. The national average was just over 65 percent. The Bill Knight service department is not about the car. It’s about you, our customers.” Bill Knight Collision Repair Tulsa recently invited the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to visit and inspect their shops in response to the Agency’s Oklahoma Star Program. The visits were voluntary consultations with collision centers to elevate awareness of federal and state regulatory requirements in the industry and to give those engaging in the businesses the opportunity to discuss environmentally friendly practices with the DEQ in an effort to be compliant in areas including conservation and recycling. After inspection of Bill Knight Collision Repair, the facilities were awarded a gold star in the Oklahoma Star program because they displayed that the

Kelly says she lives customer service and thrives on attention to detail. “Our entire customer service department gets the credit for showing lots of love to our customers,” she reported. “We try to go out of our way to assure customers know how much we appreciate them.” For example, she and members of her staff recently sent flowers to a good customer who was being treated in a local hospital. Kelly says Lincoln continually drives home the importance of customer engagement. “We want each customer to love our dealer-

centers were responsible with the waste they produce. Kelly concluded by saying, “Our customer service support staff is truly wonderful. We get a chance to make a first impression each time a customer pulls onto the service drive and one of our four service consultants greets them. Our employees are going to be pleasant and do their absolute best to get any problem fixed correctly the first time, every time.” If you hang around the service department any time at all, you’re going to notice something else – a lot of laughter. Kelly says they all like each other and have a good time performing their jobs well. Most of us understand that if the attitude is right, it can’t help but create a happy work atmosphere. “I’m only as strong as my staff,” said Kelly, “and they are really beautiful people.” Next time you need service on your vehicle, remember the friendly folks at Bill Knight Lincoln at 41st and Memorial. MAD Chicks Make it Happen M Align your brand with a blend of old and new resulting in modern expectations. By Mary Bransford As a business owner, you need to stay one step ahead of your competition by being the first to know about the latest communications trends and strategies. Companies and marketers have seized on the social media and are diving in with investments of capital and human resources. At the same time they are abandoning traditional media, reasoning that everyone has gone digital.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. MAD CHICKS founding partners, Joann Frizell and Alisha Bratt, have combined their experience to help business owners by efficiently developing a multimedia strategy, one that encompasses traditional broadcast, print and digital media. “People use different media at different times for different needs,” explained Joann. “Usage statistics reveal that millions still consume hours of older forms, and many still use these media as their primary sources of information coupled with digital media. We have introduced this concept as
Joann Frizell and Alisha Bratt, founding partners at MAD Chicks marketing and design specialize in “culture marketing” for businesses.
CULTURE MARKETING.” “Culture marketing builds brand power by embracing the consumer. This is accomplished by exploring what’s happening within your business’ target culture. Next, we clarify your brand’s unique assets and unleash a strategy to drive deep into traditional and contemporary markets,” said Joann. MAD is an acronym formed from the strengths of the founder’s backgrounds, Marketing And Design. Joann brings years of experience in both national and local level marketing. Alisha provides a fresh look at the latest trends in visual communication design, social interactive marketing and technology. Joann has a history of taking care of her customers by helping them become more successful. Her experience in media, promotions and public relations stems from working on both sides of the desk. She knows both worlds and what can and cannot be accomplished. “I totally embrace each business client and have their best interest at heart,” emphasized Joann. “I
serve large and small business using a hands-on approach to get their name everywhere I can.” They also offer positive community synergy for their clients via strong public relations skills. Goodwill and a positive brand perception are two of MAD Chicks core beliefs. This is accomplished by associating your brand with their well established community partners such as the Downtown YMCA, Guthrie Green, Global Gardens, Tulsa Parade of Lights and more. Getting started with MAD Chicks begins with a meeting where they gain a complete understanding of your company, target customers and competitors. Next, they research and create a branding strategy based on your goals and budget.
