Bill Knight Lincoln Receives President’s Award For the second time, the dealership was honored for its excellence in sales and service. By Duane Blankenship Bill Knight Lincoln, located at 41st and Memorial, was awarded Ford Motor Company’s coveted President’s Award for 2012. This is the second time the dealership has won the recognition award for its excellence in sales and service. The award is presented to top Lincoln dealerships throughout the country, and Bill Knight Lincoln has always been recognized as one of the premier automobile dealerships in Oklahoma. They were one of only three in the state to receive the award. The unique thing about
receiving the President’s Award is that selection is based upon results from a comprehensive survey taken by customers of the dealership. Bill Knight Lincoln staff members have consistently shown excellence in sales and service. “We always work hard as a team,” said Service Manager Kelly Casey, “and the President’s Award reflects on each person in every department that represents our dealership. From receptionist, salespeople, Internet staff, service advisors and technicians, office staff, parts and body shop staff – (continued on page 24)

THE POWER OF MONEY BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT
I find the power that money often has over people to be absolutely intriguing. The ebb and flow of this powerful currency and its dynamic energy to forcefully captivate the hearts and minds of people is mind-blowing. Think about it! Money (this piece of paper, coin, plastic card, these numbers scrolling across a ticker, and all that it represents), we often allow to control us. In my 11 years of practicing marriage and family therapy, the number one presenting issue between couples in my office was money. Still today, I have folks fighting in my office about money. Money causes the most diverse display of emotions I have ever seen ranging from fear, elation, anxiety, anger, joy, embarrassment, jealousy, disdain, insecurity, guilt, shame…..and I could go on and on, really! Divorces, war, murder all in the name of money. It is quite amazing how many facets of our life we tie to the almighty dollar. Amen?! The next time you find yourself overwhelmed by money, stop!
You have control over your thoughts. You have control over your feelings. What you think about your relationship to money, and what you tell yourself about dealing with it is entirely up to you. You can make of your situation whatever you choose it to be. If you find yourself in a bad mood, think about what you’ve been thinking about and decide to think differently! One thing I know for sure, if you choose to focus on the negative, dwell on the problems, entrench yourself amongst the obstacles, then my friends you will stay stuck! You will stay miserable. And if you don’t watch it, you will be broke to boot. You have to focus on what’s in front of you, not what’s behind you. You must be committed to
finding solutions and alternatives, not dwelling on the past. If you focus on the pickle you’re in, you will continue to be in the pickle you’re in. If you focus on the wall you’re about to hit, that is certainly where you will end up. Focus on where you want to go and steer in that direction. The absolutely incredible thing about the human mind is that we have control over the choices we make including what we choose to think and feel. Do not be afraid! Instead look for opportunities. “Eighty percent of America’s millionaires are first generation rich. Do smart stuff, and you can be one of them.” 1 If you need help with your investments, give us a call. We can help. For more information go to www.waterstonewealth.com or call 918-272-1120. Tulsa’s Newest RV Superstore Bob Hurley RV is becoming one of the largest, most advanced RV dealerships in the region.
By Duane Blankenship Tulsa’s newest RV superstore opened doors in January of this year. Bob Hurley, one of the largest and most respected automotive dealers in Oklahoma, is now partnering with 31-year RV industry veteran Kim Siex to build one of the largest and most advanced RV dealerships in the region. The new dealership is an integral part of the Bob Hurley auto family and is located on I-44 just west of Highway 75 in Tulsa. The Bob Hurley RV lot is loaded with new and used travel trailers, fifth wheels and motor homes, and they have the largest RV parts and accessories department in northeastern Oklahoma. “Our 28-bay service center provides service to most any brand,” says Kim, “and our parts and accessories department is second to none.” The Bob Hurley RV complex covers 37,500 square feet and features two large entrances to the property for oversize rigs, ample parking for large and small units, and an expansive camping store stocked full of parts and accessories representing well-respected RV manufacturers. You’ll find the
experienced staff to be courteous and friendly from the time you enter the beautiful, rustically decorated offices and fully stocked parts and accessories showroom. Propane and a dump station are available, and the Bob Hurley RV staff will help you make tow vehicle decisions with a “Perfect Match” program featuring Ford and GMC trucks and SUVs. The dealership has a comfortable customer waiting area with free Wi-Fi plus coffee and cappuccino at their “Crow Bar.” “You’ll always find competitive pricing in a professional, no-hassle atmosphere at Bob Hurley RV,” said Kim. When you start shopping for your camper, you’ll find a wide range from which to make your final choice. Kim says that the Bighorn camper by Heartland is the number one selling fifth wheel in the country and Hurley has a huge inventory, all of which live up to the reputation. The design is inspiring, the construction enduring and the value is always affordable. “Bighorn protects your investment with one of the highest resell values in its class,”
says Kim. Bighorn has been featured in most of the major RV magazines over the years. It sets the standard for the luxury fifth wheel class. Kim says a copy is never as good as the original and Bighorn leads the way with innovation, style, quality and value. Bob Hurley RV is the exclusive Bighorn fifth wheel dealer in northeastern Oklahoma. Starcraft is a name synonymous with the camping tradition. It has been around the RV industry for more than 100 years and is well known as one of the most dependable brands. These quality campers are equipped with everything needed for you and your family to have a great time in the great outdoors at a price you’ll also enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a new or used camper, parts or accessories like washers, dryers, generators, hitches, satellite systems or awnings, you’ll find it in Parts Manager Rick Ford’s parts department. With a plethora of camping units, a 28-bay service center, and a huge inventory of parts and accessories, you can rely on Bob Hurley RV to be your one-stop
Managing Partner Kim Siex and his staff look forward to helping you select the travel trailer of your dreams at Bob Hurley RV. shop. Kim says they are always interested in your used camper, whether or not you buy a new unit from them. Hurley also gets repos from lenders that are generally available at great prices. Even when your power goes out, the Battery Backup System enables you to open and close your garage door approximately 25 times, according to an Assurance representative. If you should forget to close your garage door as you drive away, the unit’s automatic timer will close it for you after the prescribed number of minutes you have programmed into the system (from 1 to 99 minutes). The energy-efficient operation of the 8550 is reported to consume up to 75 percent less power in standby mode according to the manufacturer. The unit also has built-in technology that enables you to control and operate your garage door from wherever you happen to be, providing you have a smart phone or computer that allows Internet access. The LiftMaster 8550 Garage Door Opener has so many features and benefits you’ve got to see it in operation to believe it. DDon’t Bark Up the Wrong Tree Company S&W Tree Specialists is a local family-owned company that provides professional services for your trees, shrubs and grass. By Duane Blankenship Bryan Merseburgh and Robby Mizumura are no strangers to tree and plant healthcare and maintenance. The brothers are an integral part of S&W Tree Specialists, a local family-owned business providing tree care, plant health care, property maintenance, tree pruning, turf care, and emergency storm services throughout northeastern Oklahoma. The employees of S&W Tree Specialists have more than 60 years of collective experience in the tree and lawn care industry, and their certified and trained arborists and tree care safety professionals are always available to answer any question you have about your trees, plants, or yard. Estimates are always free, with no obligation. Summer storm season is upon us, and many people will soon be dealing with damaged or dead trees on their property. “We want to save your trees whenever possible, but sometimes it’s just not possible,” said Robby. If a tree has died, the sooner you get it removed the better, because of liability issues it can create. If a limb or tree falls on an individual,
Brothers Bryan Merseburgh and Robby Mizumura of S&W Tree Specialists oversee primary service areas of the company – tree trimming, plant healthcare, lawn treatment, and mowing. automobile, fence or home, it’s going to cost the homeowner much more than just the cost of having the tree professionally removed. Dead or dying trees are
susceptible to diseases, some of which are carried by insects. It’s akin to you not tending to a wound. The longer you put it off, the higher your chance of complications. If just part of a
tree has died, the dead wood needs to be trimmed out, because it too is susceptible to disease and insects. Bryan handles S&W’s mowing and lawn treatment side
of the business, along with sharing overall plant health care with Robby. They offer emergency storm damage, tree pruning and removal, plant healthcare, tree planting and lawn care consultations for residential and commercial customers. S&W Tree Specialists is the preferred tree care company for the Philbrook Museum of Art and St. John Hospital, as well as the preferred property maintenance company for YMCA Tulsa and surrounding areas. The company has a continued commitment to ongoing education, training and safety, modern equipment, and a passion for total customer satisfaction. NOW IS THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR TO TRIM AND CLEAN UP YOUR TREES FOR SUMMER. Severe weather can cause serious damage to your landscape. But strong, healthy trees and shrubs have a better chance of survival. Good preventative care is often the difference between little or no damage and serious or even life-threatening storm damage.
S&W Tree Specialists is the area expert in tree care and a member of the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). Our ISA Certified Arborists can examine your trees to help eliminate the risk of breakage and increase overall health.

Preventative Maintenance for Your Carpet Dri-Rite Carpet & Upholstery Service encourages customers to schedule maintenance cleanings once a year.
By Susan Erler Everyone is used to having preventative maintenance done on their car. We schedule preventative care appointments with our dentist. We even perform preventative maintenance on our homes, but on our carpets? According to Kathy Jones, owner of Dri-Rite Carpet & Upholstery Service in Owasso, scheduling maintenance
cleanings once a year just makes sense. “I encourage all my customers to make sure they have their carpets cared for at least once a year, but especially after the winter months,” explains Kathy. “Cold weather months are so hard on our carpets. Our homes are closed up for months and the dirt, dust and grime that is tracked in or in
the air after we dust has nowhere to go, so it falls downward into your carpet fibers.” Located in Owasso for 16 years and family owned and operated, Dri-Rite is proud to say that they have been able to outlast a lot of other companies by providing excellent customer care and a personal touch. “A family member will always be
Grant Stout and Tina Gwinn of Dri-Rite Carpet & Upholstery Service in Owasso.
We specialize in eliminating pet stains & odors using our enzyme treatment
there for every job we do,” Kathy says proudly. “We want to be sure each customer gets the results they desire.” Dri-Rite’s owners, Kathy and Anthony Jones, are both licensed carpet care technicians. They are certified by IICRC (Institute of Inspections, Cleanings, and Restorations) and have undergone extensive classroom and on-the-job training by the best in the industry. This experience shows when you begin asking questions regarding their cleaning process. They explain how the dry foam process they utilize picks up 91.3 percent of dirt compared to steam cleaning, which only gets 15.6 percent. That is amazing, and when asked how long your carpet should stay clean afterward, the difference is staggering. “Dry foam cleaned carpets will stay clean on average 12 to 16 months before you will need to call us out again; steam cleaned carpets are in need of attention in only two to three months.” Dri-Rite is prepared to tackle just about any job including commercial as well as residential. But carpets are just one area of specialty. They can also clean your tile and grout, purify your air ducts, and repair and install carpet. And, for those of you with indoor pets, they are the perfect go-to people for stains and pet odors. Kathy remembers a time when locals had to send their Oriental and Persian rugs out of state to get them properly cleaned. But Dri-Rite is fully
Page 9
equipped and experienced to handle all exotic rugs including those that are naturally dyed. If that isn’t enough, they are the company to call if you ever experience damage to your home due to flood or fire. An important key to their businesses success comes from the enzyme that is used during their cleaning process. The enzyme kills bacteria in your carpet and literally pulls it through the backing to the top of the rug. If you have pets or small children in your household, breathe easy knowing that every product Dri-Rite utilizes is safe. The cost of this service varies depending on the extent of contamination. They will provide you with an in-home quote. Customers are often pleasantly surprised when they learn that their carpets will be dry in only two to three hours, and Dri-Rite staff will happily move furniture, pre-vacuum and clean baseboards, if needed. Your home will receive the white glove treatment from the experts at Dri-Rite. Why not trust the team that has been caring for carpets in homes all across northeastern Oklahoma for 16 years? Call Kathy, Anthony and the rest of the Jones family and your carpet will thank you!

tunes and dances ready for this exciting weekend of entertainment. Register or purchase tickets online at www.grandlakefestivals.com. The public is invited to the Kick-off Party and Cook-Out at Snider’s Campground just south of Grove on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees on Thursday night and again on Friday night for another evening of delicious food and great entertainment. Admission to the campground entertainment is free. Food will be available to purchase. Great entertainment is being planned for the entire weekend, with daytime events and Saturday night concert held in Grove Civic Center and evening activities on Thursday and Friday nights at Snider’s Camp. Jana Jae, founder of Grand Lake Festivals, and her family and friends will perform throughout the weekend, in addition to Jim Garling, Russ Weeks and the Dalton Gang, Duke Mason plus many other talented entertainers. Back by popular demand as headliner, Jim Paul Blair brings Hank Williams to life in “Hankerin’ 4 Hank,” tribute to
Hank Williams and his band, the Drifting Cowboys, as they bring the story and hits of Hank Williams just as they were performed in 1952, complete with doghouse bass, honky-tonk guitar, steel guitar and fiddle that defined the music of the Williams era. In addition to the authentic sound, Hank’s clothing for the tribute is an original creation made especially for this project. Jim Blair directs this group but is joined on stage with talented musicians, promising a great show that will create a wonderful nostalgic feeling. This show always receives rave reviews. On Friday, June 7, the fiddle contestants will begin competing with top-notch musicians all vying for monetary prizes. Cloggers will join the activities on Saturday at 10 a.m. with dancers competing in many categories, from Line Dance to Flatfoot Competition. The festival’s new clogging contest coordinators, Ken and Lisa Beach, are excited about bringing some of the top dancers to the Grand Lake area. Winners in both competitions will be featured at the Saturday night concert. Ken, Lisa and their son, Kevin, will offer clogging workshops and demonstrations on Friday, June 7 at the Civic Center. Contact lisa@kenettek.com for more info. You can purchase your tickets early at First National Bank in Grove or Gallery Southwest, 10th and Main in Grove, by calling (918) 786-8896, or online at
www.grandlakefestivals.com. Other festival dates include the Arts, Crafts, Music and Cajun Festival to be held at the Grove Civic Center on July 4 featuring Louisiana’s hottest Cajun band, Chris Miller and the “Bayou Roots” back by popular demand, along with Jana Jae, Clint Walker and other fabulous entertainment. Mark your calendars because the Grove Civic Center is the place to be on July 4 for a great Independence Day celebration, Cajun style. There will also be arts and crafts booths plus other interesting shopping venues. The Jana Jae Fiddle Camp will be held over Labor Day weekend featuring renowned musicians performing and teaching in workshops, demonstrations and master classes at the Grove Civic Center with evening activities at Snider’s Camp. Grand Lake Festivals, Inc., a non-profit organization, is dedicated to bringing family entertainment to the Grand Lake area with the assistance of local and area sponsors, Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Oklahoma Tourism and the City of Grove.

Black Hat Launches Roofing Division Black Hat Cleaning Services has been respected throughout metro Tulsa since 1977 and recently added roofing services.
By Duane Blankenship Black Hat was founded in 1977 when David E. Harris began passing out informational flyers about the establishment of their new chimney cleaning business. In doing so they became one of the few chimney sweeps in our state. Over the next 36 years, the Harris family would build a successful and respected business serving Tulsa and northeastern Oklahoma. In 1983, the business expanded to include air conditioning and heating air ducts and dryer ducts. Today Black Hat serves Tulsa and surrounding cities with chimney cleaning and repair, air duct cleaning, and dryer vent cleaning and repair. “It just seemed a natural progression to us,” said Michael Boles, the son-in-law of David. “We’ve spent a lot of time on roofs over the past 36 years, and with my 25 years of experience in the roofing industry we decided to expand services with the addition of Black Hat Roofing Division.” Michael has done his share of roof applications as well as
serving in management and sales areas. He says Black Hat plans an aggressive approach in promoting the new Roofing Division. They offer free roof inspections of residential and commercial properties and provide insurance claim assistance to home or business owners who they believe could qualify for roof repairs or replacement due to damages. If you’re intimidated at the thought of going through the claims process and dealing with your insurance company, Black Hat Roofing assures you that they will be at your side doing most of the claims process for you. “No project is too large or too small for us,” says Michael. Customer service has always been at the forefront with Black Hat and will continue to be throughout the Roofing Division. “We make it a point to offer the highest standard of professional care to each customer,” said David. "Now with the addition of a Roofing Division, we will give our customers the same peace of
mind with the assurance of a professionally installed roofing system," says David. Many roofs suffer with leaks due to improperly installed or bad step flashing around chimneys, skylights, and dormers. Black Hat has been assisting with these types of leak issues for years, especially around chimneys. So the step to evolve into a company offering full roof replacement just makes good sense. "Many roofing companies are only concerned with the big ticket items," says Michael. "But at Black Hat, we are about solving our customers' problems, hence the phrase, 'no job too small.'" Regardless of your roofing needs, Black Hat wants to assist you, and at a price that is reasonable and fair. Oklahoma roofing companies do a lot of work every year in Oklahoma due to hail storms. Everyone in the Tulsa metro area has seen what these unwanted balls of ice can do, causing hundreds - even thousands - of dollars in damage to their personal property,
Owner and founder David Harris and his son-in-law Michael Boles are actively launching the Black Hat Cleaning Services Roofing Division. especially to their homes' most costly covering, their roof. Remember, Black Hat specializes in assisting home owners in the claims process when these unexpected balls of ice show up.

Glow Aesthetics offers a boutique experience with medical quality treatment.
By Carol Beck-Round Aesthetics apart from similar businesses? With 16 years experience as a nurse and 11 years as an advanced practice nurse, Jenny brings a wealth of medical experience to the field of aesthetics. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” says Jenny, “as well as an interest in skin care and cosmetics.”
Jenny Maschino-Guthrie has a passion for helping women look and feel their best. That passion led her to develop the skills necessary to offer aesthetics and quality skin care. Eventually, that passion transformed into her current business, Glow Medical Aesthetics. What sets Glow Medical
When you combine her medical experience and her passion, Jenny is able to offer more than the average skin care business. “I am licensed to do more than someone who can only do facials,” she adds. Glow Medical Aesthetics’ unique setting is also something that sets the business apart. “My
Jenny Maschino-Guthrie, APRN-CNP, offers niche-market skin care and aesthetics in a boutique environment at Glow Medical Aesthetics, 8301 E. 81st St., Ste. H in Tulsa.
focus is offering medical quality skin care in a boutique setting,” says Jenny. When clients walk through the doors at 8301 E. 81st St., Ste. H, they will find anything but a medical “feel” to this upscale aesthetic practice. Instead, they will encounter a warm, welcoming environment. “We offer the best of both worlds in a non-intimidating setting.” The unique boutique experience also translates into another aspect that sets Glow Medical Aesthetics apart from the competitors. “I tailor each treatment to meet my clients’ needs, based on lifestyle, cosmetic goals and their facial anatomy,” she says. “Based on these three things, I choose the products and treatments to meet those goals.” Jenny further emphasizes that her goal is for a client to “look as natural as possible” when she is finished with treatments. “We offer a variety of procedures and products to assist women where gravity has taken its toll on their faces,” she adds. “I want to give them a more youthful, natural appearance.” After an assessment, Jenny helps her clients make the right procedure choice for their skin, including Botox or Xeomen, which are neuromodulators to relax the contraction of muscles by blocking nerve impulses, leaving expression lines relaxed and giving the face an overall softer appearance. Other options at Glow Medical Aesthetics include cosmetic fillers, chemical peels, acne management, and skin and body care products, including CosMedix, Results RX
Page 15
and Mybody shower gels and lotions with probiotics. “They are good for your skin,” she says. “My skill set using Botox and fillers leave the client looking natural,” says Jenny. “I’ve seen some women whose treatments have brought less than desirable results. You can tell they’ve undergone a procedure when finished. I strive for that natural, youthful look.” Jenny says she loves treating a client and seeing the results. “I get as excited as they do, maybe more. It does my heart good to see them have positive results. I truly like meeting their expectations and not just pushing more products at them, unless they really have a need for them.” On June 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a “Cosmos and CosMedix” open house will be held at Glow Medical Aesthetics. There will be a live filler demonstration, and all skin care products will be 20 percent off. Door prizes will be given away, including Xeomen. To find out more about Glow Medical Aesthetics or to schedule an appointment, call Jenny at (918) 856-6506 or email her at iGlowTulsa@gmail.com. MAD Chicks Make it Happen M Align your brand with a blend of old and new resulting in modern expectations. By Mary Bransford As a business owner, you need to stay one step ahead of your competition by being the first to know about the latest communications trends and strategies. Companies and marketers have seized on the social media and are diving in with investments of capital and human resources. At the same time they are abandoning traditional media, reasoning that everyone has gone digital.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. MAD CHICKS founding partners, Joann Frizell and Alisha Bratt, have combined their experience to help business owners by efficiently developing a multimedia strategy, one that encompasses traditional broadcast, print and digital media. “People use different media at different times for different needs,” explained Joann. “Usage statistics reveal that millions still consume hours of older forms, and many still use these media as their primary sources of information coupled with digital media. We have introduced this concept as
Joann Frizell and Alisha Bratt, founding partners at MAD Chicks marketing and design specialize in “culture marketing” for businesses.
CULTURE MARKETING.” “Culture marketing builds brand power by embracing the consumer. This is accomplished by exploring what’s happening within your business’ target culture. Next, we clarify your brand’s unique assets and unleash a strategy to drive deep into traditional and contemporary markets,” said Joann. MAD is an acronym formed from the strengths of the founder’s backgrounds, Marketing And Design. Joann brings years of experience in both national and local level marketing. Alisha provides a fresh look at the latest trends in visual communication design, social interactive marketing and technology. Joann has a history of taking care of her customers by helping them become more successful. Her experience in media, promotions and public relations stems from working on both sides of the desk. She knows both worlds and what can and cannot be accomplished. “I totally embrace each business client and have their best interest at heart,” emphasized Joann. “I
serve large and small business using a hands-on approach to get their name everywhere I can.” They also offer positive community synergy for their clients via strong public relations skills. Goodwill and a positive brand perception are two of MAD Chicks core beliefs. This is accomplished by associating your brand with their well established community partners such as the Downtown YMCA, Guthrie Green, Global Gardens, Tulsa Parade of Lights and more. PPain-Free Knees, Please Kathy Stone of Poteau now lives without knee pain after two total knee replacements from Dr. LaButti. By Joshua Danker-Dake In the last year, Kathy Stone, of Poteau, has had both knees replaced by Dr. Ronald S. LaButti. “I’ve had knee problems forever,” says Kathy, a former floral and interior designer who now works in her husband’s chiropractic practice. “Everything I did would cause horrible pain and swelling, and it just kept getting worse. I knew that something had to be done or else I would probably end up in a wheelchair, and at 58, that
was not an option.” Kathy researched new robotic knee replacement procedures, and found that Dr. LaButti offered what she was looking for. Dr. LaButti offers computer-navigated robotic total knee replacement, which maps the patient’s knee joint without preoperative CT or MRI scans and allows Dr. LaButti to determine the size and position of the implant before making any bone cuts. This procedure can increase accuracy for implant placement, make implants last longer, and reduce recovery time. Kathy had her right knee replaced via this method in August of 2012. “I was amazed at how quickly I healed,” she says. “Even the pain I had after surgery was much less than the pain I’d been living with for so long.” Six months later, Kathy’s right knee was pain-free, she says. She had her left knee replaced in January, again using this procedure. “The results are just as good as before. I’m walking great without a cane, crutches, or a walker.” Kathy says she was also very satisfied with her pre-surgery
experience with Dr. LaButti. “I was surprised at how quickly I got an appointment, and Dr. LaButti was straightforward and to the point. I was impressed with how quickly everything was set up.” Kathy says, “In my chiropractic office, we have a lot of patients with the same problems I had. They are amazed at how well I have done, and often want to know who did my surgeries. I enthusiastically recommend Dr. LaButti to our patients, and I know that they will get the best care and treatment. I’m grateful to Dr. LaButti and his great staff for the wonderful care I received.” For more information on Dr. LaButti or knee or hip replacement surgery, visit www.hipandkneedoc.com.

IImpacting Lives on a Daily Basis Goodwill Industries of Tulsa had a banner year in 2012. By Duane Blankenship Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has been a good steward of the community resources entrusted to them. More than 380,000 donations were received by Goodwill Donation Centers in the Tulsa area last year, and Goodwill was able to hire, train and place more people with barriers to employment than any time in its 86-year history. Goodwill is proud of the tremendous impact it has on individuals. Goodwill offers multiple services to area businesses and contracts with local hospitals to provide document shredding, cardboard baling and custodial services. Through these services, participants learn valuable, real-world work skills. Goodwill also provides job training and placement and retention services for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment. Many earn meaningful jobs that allow them to become self-sufficient, improve their self-esteem and become productive elements in our economy. Goodwill recognizes outstanding participant accomplishments at an annual Awards Luncheon. Master of Ceremonies for the 2013 event was David Oliver, president,
Goodwill Industries of Tulsa. Presentations were emceed by Kristen Dickerson, charming evening news anchor of KTUL. Graduate of the Year honors went to Alex Jackson. Alex came to Goodwill as a high school

May of 2007, Sue’s case manager recommended that she pursue work opportunities available through Goodwill, feeling she would be a perfect fit for the enclaves – small work groups of supported workers – that Goodwill operates at local hospitals. From the beginning, she showed a willingness to do whatever it took to get her job done and a dedication to do it right, always with a big smile. Sue’s positive attitude and strong work ethic quickly got her a fulltime position with Goodwill’s cleaning enclave at St. John Medical Center. There she has learned new tasks and is doing an excellent job. She has a great attitude and is well respected by staff and co-workers. Achiever of the Year was presented to Regina Hawk. “The Life Skills Class helped change my perspective and I refused to be broken,” said Regina. Regina attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and finished her education at Oklahoma State University, earning a bachelor’s degree. When everything seemed to be going perfectly, her world began collapsing. Regina was unable to find a job in her field as an educator, went through a devastating divorce, and found
herself frustrated and in financial desperation. She found herself a stay-at-home mom of two, struggling to make it, and was soon homeless and alone. While at the homeless shelter, she noticed a flyer from Goodwill and enrolled in their Life Skills Class. Almost instantly, she discovered a feeling of hope. After only ten weeks, she began interviewing and was able to secure a job as an educator. “Because of the people at Goodwill, I have my life back,” said Regina. Community Parnter of the Year honors went to Mary Thomas, representing Consumer Credit Counseling of Tulsa. Mary has taught money management courses at Goodwill for 16 years. Thanks to the Tulsa community for their caring attitude and participation in the many Goodwill Industries of Tulsa programs and services.

Bill Knight Lincoln Receives President’s Award everyone must do their part to provide superior customer satisfaction.” Kelly adds stability to Bill Knight Lincoln customer service with 18 years in the profession. She also recently attained ACH Level 4 Certification and was noted in “Automotive News” for her accomplishment. Kelly says she lives customer service and thrives on attention to detail. “Our entire customer service department gets the credit for showing lots of love to our customers,” she reported. “We try to go out of our way to assure customers know how much we appreciate them.” For example, she and members of her staff recently sent flowers to a good customer who was being treated in a local hospital. Kelly says Lincoln continually drives home the importance of customer engagement. “We want each customer to love our
dealership and know how special they are to each of us. When customers were asked if they loved their dealership, 72 percent of our Lincoln customers said they did. The national average to the question was 61 percent. When asked if they trusted their dealership, nearly 80 percent said they did. The national average was just over 65 percent. The Bill Knight service department is not about the car. It’s about you, our customers.” Bill Knight Collision Repair Tulsa recently invited the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to visit and inspect their shops in response to the Agency’s Oklahoma Star Program. The visits were voluntary consultations with collision centers to elevate awareness of federal and state regulatory requirements in the industry and to give those engaging
in the businesses the opportunity to discuss environmentally friendly practices with the DEQ in an effort to be compliant in areas including conservation and recycling. After inspection of Bill Knight Collision Repair, the facilities were awarded a gold star in the Oklahoma Star program because they displayed that the centers were responsible with the waste they produce. Kelly concluded by saying, “Our customer service support staff is truly wonderful. We get a chance to make a first impression each time a customer pulls onto the service drive and one of our four service consultants greets them. Our employees are going to be pleasant and do their absolute best to get any problem fixed correctly the first time, every time.” If you hang around the service department any

Is Your Driveway in a State of Decay? to six members with the adoption of four children, a girl and her three brothers. "It was a big step for us," said Kalan, going from no children to a family of six!" The children range from almost two to eight years. A member of the Better Business Bureau, LCI is fully insured. “Our concrete products are built with the finest materials and workmanship and last for many years,” said Kalan. If you’ve lived in Oklahoma for long, you’ve noticed that we can have some really severe winters. Snow, ice and the corrosive salt materials employed to thaw streets can have a damaging effect on concrete driveways. You’ve likely noticed flaking and pitting on driveways throughout the area. As deterioration and damage
worsens, the condition creates a negative impression. If ignored, the problem will eventually influence the value of your property. LCI can eliminate the eye sore and help restore the value. Whether you have a tired old driveway, patio, or other flatwork surface that needs some tender, loving care, LCI will tear out the old and replace it with something new that is built to the highest recommended specs - something you will be proud of for years to come. “Concrete is very durable,” said Kalan, “but the subsurface has to be properly prepared before pouring the concrete. We prepare the subsurface to the highest recommended standards and it’s pretty common for one of our driveways to last a minimum of 20 to 30 years.” It’s not inexpensive to
replace a damaged driveway, but when you look at the added curb appeal and the product’s life span, it’s a good investment, one that you and your family will enjoy for a long time. Concrete brightens the area around your home and is an environmentally friendly product. The renewable resources that make up concrete can be recycled into granular fill or concrete aggregate and reused. If you’re interested in getting an estimate from Kalan, it’s free. To remove and replace an existing driveway, you’re looking at about two days total for breakout, removal, preparation and pouring. Scoring takes place about four days after the concrete is poured and set up. LCI first professionally prepares the subsurface. They then use 3.8” rebar on an industry
continued from page 1 recommended two ft. grid pattern for each job they perform. At 3500 psi, they then pour and finish the concrete. Before the concrete is poured you’ll be able to select a concrete color from over 80 integral color choices. Give Kalan a call this week to get going on restoring both curb appeal and value to your home.

concerts will feature Easy Street Band on Friday, June 21, benefitting the Tulsa SPCA. The final “Live From The Village” presentation will spotlight the Fabulous Midlife Crisis Band and benefits the American Red Cross. It is scheduled for Friday, July 19. Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. and conclude around 9:30 p.m. This gives you a chance to visit one of the many fine restaurants or other food specialty shops at KingsPointe for a delicious dinner or tasty treat, with plenty of time left to pick a spot and set up for an evening of fun and entertainment. Enjoy a preconcert visit to Camille’s Sidewalk Café, Dickey’s Barbecue, Hideaway Pizza, McGills, Pei Wei, or Subway. For a tasty treat, you’ll find Bodega Wine & Spirits, Jamba Juice and Starbucks. “From fashion to food, KingsPointe is the tastiest corner in Tulsa,” said Sharon. Representatives from each charity spotlighted will be on hand to receive donations of needed items or cash if you are so moved. SPCA is celebrating 100 years in the Tulsa community. They will not have the animals for adoption at the June concert because of their concern that the crowd and noise could upset the animals. They are, however, always in need of donated items including gently used towels, blankets, collars, leashes, dog beds, treats and toys, bowls, distilled water, and cat and dog food. You will have the opportunity to speak with a
representative to receive information about adopting a pet in need of a good home and some tender, loving care. Cash donations are also accepted and your generous help is always appreciated by those who cannot speak for themselves. Visit the Tulsa SPCA website at www.tulsaspca.org for more information. At the July 19th concert with the Midlife Crisis Band, everyone will be remembering the one-year anniversary of the Oklahoma wildfires. You are asked to consider making a monetary donation. You may also want to learn more about becoming a volunteer for the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross. Be sure to come early. The best spots always fill up quickly. The KingsPointe Village Summertime Concerts are a great time for some of us to remember what it was like during earlier Tulsa times, which we refer to as “the good ol’ days.” Sharon King Davis will be your emcee for the remaining two presentations and invites you to join her for a great evening of entertainment to make you feel good while benefitting local charities. There will be prizes and coupons awarded, compliments of your KingsPointe businesses. Don’t forget your dancing shoes! For more information, contact

Take the Family South to Tijuana’s in Bixby Tijuana’s Grill & Cantina provides something for everyone at 146th and Memorial in Bixby.
By Christopher Davis reputation for authentic Mexican cuisine. Barbosa’s restaurant is everything that is great about a family-run business. The food is unique, fresh and delicious; the service is fast and friendly. Upon entering the restaurant, customers see a collection of pictures displaying family members and close friends, establishing an intimate and relaxing atmosphere.
Tijuana’s Grill & Cantina is owned by Francisco Barbosa. Mr. Barbosa has been running Tijuana’s for about nine years, when he and his brother opened up their original location in Tulsa. After establishing a successful run in Tulsa, Francisco opened the current Bixby location almost three years ago, where he has focused on building upon Tijuana’s
Though the dining area is not large, the design is well thought out. Vaulted ceilings and comfortable seating arrangements encourage diners to linger and enjoy their meal and conversations. Often, restaurants cram as many seats as possible into a dining area; Tijuana’s is a refreshing exception to this cliché. Reinforcing the family dynamic, the cantina is

somewhat separated from the dining area, tucked within an indoor gazebo of sorts. A patio encourages diners to enjoy the summer breeze. It is obvious that Tijuana’s is keen to welcome everyone, no matter the dining occasion. The menu reflects this, as well, and expands beyond the expected staples of burritos, tacos and enchiladas to offer a wide range of options and a few surprises for those who seek a new flavor experience. The Del Mar menu features plenty of seafood entrees, including Camarones ala Diabla – shrimp cooked with a special hot, red sauce and served with vegetables, steamed rice, guacamole and pico de gallo. Vegetarians will love the avocado enchilada, topped with tomatillo sauce, tomatoes and cilantro. The children’s menu includes traditional entrees and options for chicken fingers, a corn dog or cheeseburger. This should relieve parents who are wary of their young, picky eaters! And, if a full meal is too much (or too little) for your appetite, there are plenty of appetizers and salads to choose from. In addition to the vast menu, Tijuana’s offers a nice selection of desserts. Apple sopapillas, fried ice cream, flan and choco chimis will encourage you to indulge. A full bar and creative margarita menu will ensure that your afternoon or evening out will be filled with laughter and conversation, and not merely great food! When asked about what sets
Tijuana’s apart from other restaurants, Mr. Barbosa is enthusiastic. “Luis Vergana is the best cook I know,” he boasts. All the food at Tijuana’s is made fresh and from scratch. Luis and Francisco have worked together for 16 years. It is clear that they are good friends who are doing what they love. This passion for family and great food is expressed throughout the restaurant. As for the future, Mr. Barbosa says he is considering adding some new items to the menu, but does not plan to expand the restaurant or open another location. “I’d like to focus on family, right now,” he says. Francisco has three schoolaged children who keep him and his wife busy. No matter the occasion, Tijuana’s will take care of you. Every day, they have all-you-caneat lunch specials. Located at the intersection of 146th and Memorial, there is ample parking (even if you have a work truck or trailer). Bentley Park and Baseball Complex and the Bixby Business District are within walking distance, so sports teams, families and offices will all find a welcoming meal at Tijuana’s.

TTaking Away the Pain Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma helps patient return to her active lifestyle. By Carol Beck-Round A trip to Minnesota in September, 2011 to visit relatives for a month left Claremore resident Barbara Moonen in pain – so much pain that it affected her sleep and her regular exercise routine. “Shortly after returning from the trip, I began to have pain in my right leg,” says Barbara. “It was a constant irritation and I didn’t know how the two were related – the drive to and from Minnesota and the pain.” Barbara turned to Ibuprofen and an ice pack on the affected knee to relieve the pain. “I purchased the wrap-around ice pack designed especially for knee pain when I was getting some custom orthotics made for my walking shoes. It provided temporary relief.” During a routine physical the following April with her primary care physician, Dr. Dwight J. Korgan, Barbara mentioned her leg pain. “He didn’t think it was my knee but my back that was causing the problem,” she said. “I didn’t think it was my back, but Dr. Korgan thought the long drive I had taken to and from Minnesota was the cause of the
Dr. Korgan ordered X-rays of Barbara’s back, which revealed arthritis. However, after an MRI to discover the root of the problem, she learned that the very last vertebra in her back was pinching a nerve. “Dr. Korgan said I had three options,” she says. “Do nothing, have surgery or try spinal decompression therapy.” Barbara knew she couldn’t

I thought stress might be causing my problem.” Barbara has always been active. “I exercise a lot, including
walking and weights.” The pain led to cutting back on her walking routine. “I just couldn’t walk as much. I kept cutting back from my normal three miles a day until I was only walking one mile,” she says. Eventually, she took up riding a stationary bicycle at the Claremore Recreation Center. “It didn’t hurt my knee like walking did,” she adds.

continue with the pain. “I wasn’t sleeping,” she said. “I had to do something but surgery wasn’t an option I wanted to consider. I knew others who had chosen that route and it hadn’t worked—at least for them.” Spinal Decompression proved to be the answer. For two weeks, Barbara went in daily for her 45-minute treatment. As she progressed, her visits were cut
back. “Eventually, I was doing so well that Dr. Korgan agreed that I didn’t have to complete the entire course,” she adds. “He did give me four different back stretching exercises to do daily for the rest of my life. I do two sets of ten when I get up in the morning.” Barbara found relief from her pain after the fourth visit. While there is no pain during the actual treatment, Moonen said she used an ice pack on her lower back after the treatment for the first few times. “It wasn’t really pain but more of an ache,” she says. “I also had to take it easy during this time so my husband took over a lot of the housework for me.” According to Barbara, “The staff at Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma is not only helpful but nice. They couldn’t be any better.” She is so pleased with her results that she is back exercising at the Rec Center and has already referred several others to the office. “I tell them to at least check into spinal decompression if they are in pain.” To find out more about Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma, check out their website at www.SDOBack.com or call (918) 341-1250. 5 Ways to Protect Your Money While Traveling Financially Fit is a column published by RCB Bank to help you gain knowledge on all things financial. Fitness guides – RCB Bank professionals in the field – offer ideas to help you strengthen your money sense, customize savings training, and provide quick and easy action plans to start whipping your money into shape.
By Denise Meyer You’ve been saving for your vacation all year. You’ve scheduled time off, made your travel arrangements; you’re packed and ready to go. Have you called your bank to tell them where and when you’re going? By doing so they can watch your account for suspicious activity, letting you relax and enjoy the trip. Denise Meyer is Assistant VP of the Corporate Fraud Department at RCB Bank. She is responsible for monitoring debit card activity, analyzing fraud trends and writing policy changes to block fraud attempts and try and stop the bad guys. She offers some other tips to help protect your money while traveling this summer: When talking to your bank about your travel plans, verify they have your current contact information. I want to protect my customers. If I suspect suspicious activity on their account, I need to be able to call them to find out if it’s fraudulent. If I can’t get in touch with the account owner, I may put a block on their debit card. Better safe than sorry. It’s a good habit to contact your bank and credit card
companies before traveling. Tell them your travel dates, states and/or countries you’re traveling through, and when you expect to return. Make sure they have a current cell number, email address or
way to reach you while you’re away. Set up email alerts through online banking to notify you of account transactions. An example may be to set up an alert to
Knowing her money is well-protected, Denise Meyer takes a breather during a recent trip.
www.ValueNews.com notify you of unusual activity on your account. Another way to watch your account on the go is by using our free apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. You can scan daily transactions securely from your personal phone (not a public computer), and if you see anything suspicious, you can act quickly. Have a backup money plan. If you’re using plastic while on your trip, what’s the plan if your card is ever rejected? Plan for backup methods of payments, such as cash, traveler’s checks, money orders or prepaid VISA cards. Tip – if you are using your debit card and it’s rejected, you may be able to complete a transaction by using your PIN. Banks may block some states or countries from allowing signature swipes (run as credit) for security reasons to protect your account. Using your debit card keeps your personal account information safe. When a debit card transaction is processed, no identifiable account or personal information is given to the merchant. If your debit card is lost or stolen, don’t panic; you won’t have to close your account. Call your bank; they’ll cancel the old card, reissue you a new one and watch for fraudulent activity. A good rule of thumb when traveling is to use a credit card instead of your debit card (especially when overseas). Always assume others are watching you. Don’t give fraudsters a reason to target you. Don’t leave your credit card with a merchant (for a tab) who could easily snap a copy of the card with a phone camera. When
swiping your card, make sure no one is looking over your shoulder when entering the PIN. Also, beware of any devices that may be attached to a card reader. If anything on the reader looks suspicious, don’t use it. If you suspect fraud, act quickly. Fraudsters know the clock is ticking. If your credit/debit card is lost or stolen, contact your bank immediately. If traveling overseas, you might consider leaving card information and copies of your passport and ID’s with a trusted friend. If personal identifiable information (social security #, date of birth) is stolen, file a fraud alert with one of the three credit bureaus: Equifax, 1-888-766-0008; Experian, 1-888-397-3742; TransUnion, 1-888-909-8872. It’s free and puts an alert on your social security number for 90 days. You can renew as necessary. RCB Bank has a Fraud Hotline, 1-877-361-0814, and staff is on call Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you would like to ask me questions about protecting yourself against fraud, email me at dmeyer@bankrcb.net or call 1-877-361-0814. Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space Tulsa Stone and Brick Works provides outdoor custom masonry applications.
By Duane Blankenship Owner Randy Sissom began doing business as Tulsa Stone and Brick Works in 2001. The original company, Tulsa Brick Works, originated 50 years ago by Randy’s father, was solely in residential housing. Today, Randy’s focus is in outdoor custom masonry applications that include fireplaces, patios, kitchens, brick and stone mailboxes, planters, chimney repair, brick and stone repair, block masonry, waterfalls, retaining walls, koi ponds, and some interior fireplace remodeling. Tulsa Stone and Brick Works uses manufactured and natural stone and brick. When you visit a job site, you’re certain to appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail. If you want to create the perfect outdoor living space, an outdoor kitchen is an essential element. Randy and his team provide total construction for outdoor kitchens complete with electric, plumbing, carpentry and any other service that may be needed. You may consider an option that might include your current grill or one of the several built-in models of natural gas, propane, and charcoal grills

subcontractors when you have already paid your contractor in full. Visit Tulsa Stone and Brick Works’ website for examples of the quality work they’ve done in Oklahoma and surrounding states. Randy likes to donate a project to charity each year. He has completed beautiful examples of his skills at the Linnaeus Teaching Garden in Tulsa, including a stone memorial arch for Walt Helmerick and a brick memorial arch for Tulsa Garden Center gardeners. If you visit the Tulsa Garden Center you’ll also see a beautiful outdoor fireplace and kitchen that was created by Tulsa Stone and Brick Works. “We stand behind our work and provide a one-year guarantee on every project,” says Randy. The company is licensed, bonded and gladly provides insurance certificates upon request. “We currently build more outdoor fireplaces, kitchens and brick mailboxes than any company in the state,” Randy added. Tulsa Stone and Brick Works is a dealer for Cal-Flame, and quotes on any project are always free. If you have an idea of what you would like to do, Randy will gladly offer his experience and advice to help make it a reality at a price that won’t break the bank.
offered by Tulsa Stone and Brick Works. “Whatever your ambition, we can help make it a reality,” said Randy. A lot of character is added to an interior or outdoor fireplace with the inclusion of a solid wood mantel. “All of our wood mantels are 100 percent solid timber,” said Randy. “Much of it is reclaimed and is more than 100 years old, providing a unique touch.” Tulsa Stone and Brick Works also imports exotic woods from around the world, and their stock changes quickly. Call to inquire about current inventories. An outdoor living lifestyle is significantly enhanced with the addition of an outdoor fireplace. They bring warmth to chilly evenings and add character to any backyard landscape. Each fireplace is custom-built and handcrafted. Tulsa Stone and Brick Works provides a turn-key service. You’ll receive unprecedented craftsmanship and will find Randy and his crew friendly and convenient as they provide all materials necessary to completing the task. Whether your project is small or large, you’ll receive Randy’s undivided attention. For your safety, Randy suggests that you always request general liability and workers comp certificates prior to having any work done. Be sure the certificates are in the name of the company that will be providing services. No one wants to be caught in a dispute between your contractor and his

CChalk It Up! Artists will be chalking the streets of Broken Arrow’s Rose District June 7 and 8.
By Duane Blankenship “Chalk It Up!” is the colorful and inspired Broken Arrow art festival that received the Award of Excellence in 2012 from the State of Oklahoma Recreation & Parks Society. This award is scored on many specifics including originality, funding sources, inter-agency cooperation and non-profit organization
involvement. Last year marked the inauguration of this Broken Arrow Main Street event. Broken Arrow Parks Department Events Coordinator David Blue and local entrepreneur and Your Design owner Alisa Inglett have worked diligently to bring Chalk It Up! back for a repeat performance.
David Blue and Alisa Inglett have worked hard to bring the 2nd annual “Chalk It Up!” to Broken Arrow, presented by the Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council and Broken Arrow Parks & Recreation Department.
www.ValueNews.com
This year’s festival will feature more artists, entertainers, vendors and extended hours in continuing the trend of excellence. “The 2013 Chalk It Up! festival will be the first event ever to be held in the recently appointed Rose District of downtown Broken Arrow,” said David. David became interested in hosting a “chalk” event in Broken Arrow when he found information on 3-D art and artists who were doing their chalk creations in Venice, California several years ago. As with so many trends, chalk art first become popular on both the east and west coasts. As the years have passed, more communities in the heart of the country have hosted events. David and Alisa put their heads together to come up with Broken Arrow’s creative and entertaining Chalk It Up! festival in the heart of downtown Broken Arrow, and the rest is history. Chalk It Up! is brought to our community by the Broken Arrow Arts & Humanities Council and Broken Arrow Parks & Recreation Department. The festival begins Friday evening, June 7, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. It will continue Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free, open to the public, and will entertain the entire family. Artists will be creating their art in the middle of Main Street in downtown Broken Arrow between Dallas and Commercial. Alisa says, “Artists are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild as they ‘Chalk It Up!’ in the new
Art from the 2012 Chalk It Up! festival. Rose District.” Artists representing three age groups from 6 years to adult will have the opportunity to compete in four categories including Masters, Animation, 3-D and Artist’s Choice. Each category will be awarded first, second and third place prizes. There will also be a Best of Show Award and a People’s Choice Award, for a total of 11 possible award winners. Age categories are: 6-11 years, 12-17 years, and 18+ (adult). For more specific information about registration and rules, please call Alisa Inglett at (918) 994-4473 or visit the event’s Facebook page. Artist registration fee is $20. Each competing artist or team of four will receive a festival T-shirt, chalk, water, a light lunch and gift bags from local Main Street business owners. Event judging, including the People’s Choice Award, will commence at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded immediately after judging is completed.
Sponsors for the 2013 Chalk It Up! festival include: Broken Arrow Convention and Visitors Bureau, City of Broken Arrow, Walmart Store #3295, First National Bank, AVB Bank, Your Design Frame Shop & Gallery, QuikTrip Corporation, and Main Street Merchants. This is a great opportunity to spend some fun quality time with your family. Chalk It Up! will feature live music, entertainers consisting of street performers, jugglers, and living statues, and vendors showing and selling their art and handmade crafts. World’s Richest Noodling Tournament Coming to Claremore “Battle of the Big Cats” will pay out more than $10,000 in cash and prizes.
By Carol Beck-Round Kaleb Summers likes a challenge. He confesses to being an adrenaline junkie. In high school, he wrestled, then earned a college scholarship as a steer wrestler; however, bad knees ended his dreams in the rodeo arena. He also fought professionally as a cage fighter. Seeking another outlet for his high-energy personality, the Claremore resident began thinking about his dad’s previous passion for noodling, a unique way of catching monster catfish with bare hands in rivers and lakes. Noodling is an ancient practice, dating back to the Native Americans who passed on their fishing technique to early settlers. No bait or rod is used. Summers’ passion for learning more about this unusual Midwestern American sport led him to southeastern Oklahoma, where family friends taught him the basics of noodling, or hillbilly hand-fishin’. “I had to learn how to differentiate between beaver holes and a catfish nest and avoid cotton mouths,” says Summers. “When I returned home, I went through a lot of trial and error before it all finally clicked.”
When it did click for Summers, he became “hooked.” Summers, along with his team members – L.J. Parks, Joel Parks, Dillon Owen, Colby Owen and Brandon Bedient – know how to discover a catfish hole, then submerge under the water and wait for the catfish to bite a hand. When the flathead latches on to the noodler’s hand, spotters then assist by helping to put a stringer in the thick jaws. “It’s not for the claustrophobic,” says Summers. “When you’re underwater trying to noodle a monster fish, it can get pretty tight.” In 2012, the team of six entered the annual Okie Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Going into the tournament, Summers and his team were determined to walk away with the prize. “We only had to catch one fish,” says Summers, “and it had to be the biggest.” Perseverance, skill and luck paid off when Summers and his team noodled a trophy catch and set a record at the tournament with a 70-pound flathead. However, according to Summers, the monster catfish put up a fight that required the
six to literally “bear hug and wrestle her to the shoreline.” After the big win and the ensuing publicity, Summers knew he wanted to start his own noodling competition in northeastern Oklahoma. With his dad’s encouragement and community support, Summers launched “Battle of the Big Cats: Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown,” which will debut June 14-15 at the Claremore Expo Center. “We are doubling the prize money offered at Pauls Valley,” he says. “I wanted northeastern Oklahoma to have their own competition and make it one of the best.” Over $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded at the event. With a trade show, noodling demonstrations, live entertainment, a fish fry, family activities and “Money the Hard Way for the Ladies in the Tank,” the event promises lots of excitement for all ages and both genders. With a $50 per person entry fee, noodlers are limited to turning in their largest catfish. A top prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the winner. Prize money will be paid out to the top three fish.
Kaleb Summers and his team wrestled a 70-pound flathead catfish into their boat to win the 2012 Okie Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley last June. Contestant entries, rules, regulations and vendor registrations can be found at www.visitclaremore.org or www.stoadventures.net. Registration forms must be completed and returned with the entry fee by June 12, either by mail or in person at the Claremore Expo Center office. The tournament begins on June 13. Event sponsors include NABATAK Outdoor, Visit Claremore, Claremore Expo Center, K95/FOX23, Summer's Drilling & Blasting, Value News, Melton Sales, GRDA, Osage
Casino, Pixley Lumber, BancFirst, Wild Country Meats, Warren Cat, Hooters, and Claremore Compounding Pharmacy. If swimming in muddy waters and sticking your hand into the mouth of a monster fish doesn’t appeal, you’ll still enjoy the excitement generated by this one-of-a-kind Okie sport.
