Fitness on the Green Fowler Toyota of Tulsa is sponsoring free daily fitness classes during the month of May at Guthrie Green. By Duane Blankenship If you are not familiar with Guthrie Green, here’s a great opportunity to get acquainted. Guthrie Green is an urban garden and performance space in the heart of the Brady Arts District in downtown Tulsa. It provides a unique space for Tulsans to congregate, shop and enjoy downtown’s newest urban park. Fowler Toyota of Tulsa has partnered with the Downtown YMCA to offer free fitness classes on Guthrie Green each day, Monday through Saturday, during the month of May.

Classes will be geared towards downtown Tulsa’s professionals and their families, and everyone is welcome to attend. Jonathan Fowler, vice president of operations for Fowler Holding Company/Corporate Headquarters, and Ken Wilkins, general manager of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa, are excited about Fowler’s sponsorship participation of Fitness on the Green. “Fowler has a strong philosophy of giving back to the communities in which we

serve,” Jonathan said, “and we love being involved in the arts, culture, health and fitness.” Ken added, “These are the areas in which we want to maintain the focus of Fowler Toyota of Tulsa as we continue serving our community.” When Fowler and Wilkins first met with project cosponsors, they immediately realized that Fowler had the desire and resources to sponsor Fitness on the Green for the entire month of May. ASK THE MONEY MAVEN STRAIGHT-FORWARD, NO-NONSENSE TALK ABOUT YOUR MONEY

NOT YOUR VEGAS STOCK MARKET BOOKIE. BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

“The market hit all time highs again!” exclaims every media source ever over the last month. “We’ve been here before, remember?” I reply with a middleAmerica voice of reason! All the risk that existed then…still exists now. Sometimes dealing with the emotions that the stock market elicits from folks is the most challenging part of my job. GREED and FEAR run the markets! When I hear people starting to talk crazy about wanting unreasonable returns and about thinking of buying “willynilly” stocks, I know we are in the GREED phase of the market. It is at this phase, I am certain, that we need to be cautious about a downturn. It reminds me of something I heard Warren Buffet say: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” What do you think the market will do? It’s at all time highs! Do you think it

will go down from here? That, my friends, is the 50 million dollar question. What I can tell you is that last time we were here, it dropped by 40%. So, what’s a guy supposed to do? Dance the Chicken Dance or ride the Big Sexy Roller Coaster? Well, perhaps a little of both. You must remember that this is not a gigantic game of “Texas Hold ‘Em”! You are not required to be “all in” or “all out.” There is more than one strategy that can be used to win the game. I prefer the “Steady Eddy” wins the race approach to investing. It

may be a bit on the boring side but I’m way over the Big Sexy Roller Coaster and I would prefer to err on the side of caution. When our clients hire us to be their financial advisor, they are hiring us to be their risk manager, not their Vegas Stock Market Bookie. Our goal is to manage the risk and make money as we can. Always remember, “If you preserve capital, you will always have another opportunity for growth.” To adopt a Steady Eddy approach you have to have a clear understanding of where you are (what you own), and where you want to go (what you want your investments to do). It requires planning, patience, and perseverance. It demands staying focused on the goal while filtering out all the media noise and the voices in your head. If you could use some help figuring out what to do with your investments, give us a call at 918-272-1120.

BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center will donate crops from its new community garden to Arms Around BA and Broken Arrow Neighbors, two non-profit organizations that help disadvantaged residents.

By Sheryl Sowell

Since opening BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center in 2010, founders Malissa Spacek and Dr. James Campbell have wondered what to do with the bare plot of land they own directly adjacent to the building. Malissa, a master gardener who has a true passion for using her green thumb, came up with the idea to use the plot for a community garden, with crops that would be donated to those in need in the community. BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center is proud to announce that their community garden is now in bloom, and the first set of crops is expected to be shared with Broken Arrow residents by the end of May. All fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs will be donated to Arms Around BA (located directly across from BA Med Spa) and to Broken Arrow Neighbors. People in need who get groceries from food banks typically receive non-perishable items, and the community garden will be an excellent resource to supplement their diets with healthy veggies, fruits

and herbs. A total of 48 items have been planted so far, including potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, turnips, tomatoes and cucumbers. “Essentially if it can grow, we are planting it!” says Malissa. Though the garden had been in Malissa’s mind for quite

some time, the idea did not spring into action until she happened to run into Joe Wilkinson, a talented local landscape architect who hosts fundraisers for churches and other organizations to create food-producing community gardens. From that point on, the idea went full speed ahead.

Malissa’s son, Samm Spacek, is the community garden’s project manager, and volunteers include Britt Radford, Kirby Jarolim, Marwin Kemp, Melody Spacek, James Cole and Meg Sutherland. “This garden is truly a labor of love,” said Meg, who is also the marketing director of BA Med Spa. “Some of the

Ultherapy uses ultrasound to lift, tone and tighten the skin. It is FDA approved for the face, neck and brow. Ultherapy targets the deep foundation below the skin-typically addressed in cosmetic surgery - without cutting or disrupting the skin’s surface. Ultherapy stimulates the body’s own natural collagen building process. With just one treatment, Ultherapy initiates the lifting process which builds gradually over two to three months and continues to improve over time. Ultherapy is a compelling option for people with mild to moderate skin laxity as well as those wanting to “stay ahead of the game” or those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery. SSay Goodbye to Unwanted Hair Emerge Medical Day Spa will offer a free informational class on laser hair removal on Thursday, May 23. By Sheryl Sowell Most people will agree – shaving or waxing unwanted body hair is frustrating, time-consuming, and a big hassle. And no one wants razor burn or stubble! For those who are considering trying something different to deal with this hairy issue, Emerge Medical Day Spa will host a free informational class on laser hair removal procedures on Thursday, May 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The class will cover everything you need to know about laser hair removal, including the risks and benefits, Emerge’s

competitive pricing and package deals, eligible skin types and more. The class will be led by Kelley Tompkins, Taryn Schell and Belinda Stewart and will feature demonstrations, before and after photos, a question and answer session, and treatment giveaways and discounts. Refreshments will be served. Register for your spot online at www.emergemedicaldayspa.com or call (918) 392-8606. hair removal department. They use one laser for hair removal, and one laser only – the Candela GentleLASE. Taryn Schell has been performing laser hair removal procedures for the past 11 years. “There is no better laser for hair removal on the market,” she explains. “So many other lasers simply don’t work. With this machine, you do not need several treatments before you see results. Candela’s alexandrite long pulse technology produces unbelievable results.” According to Kelley Tompkins, director of Emerge Medical Day Spa, the two biggest fears people have about laser hair removal are 1) pain and 2) cost. She explains, however, that these worries are unnecessary – it is not a painful procedure, and it is much more affordable than many people realize, particularly if they purchase package deals. “Candela’s cooling device shoots a cold mist onto the skin before the laser, assuring no messy gels,” says Kelley. “And our prices are very competitive.” The Candela GentleLASE treats pigmented hair on all areas of the body, and may be used on most skin types. “The Candela

GentleLASE really targets dark stubble. The three spot sizes allow me to remove hair in delicate areas without damaging the skin, such as for a true Brazilian,” says Taryn. “In addition to permanent hair removal, the Candela laser boosts collagen and smoothes skin.” Permanent laser hair removal generally requires five to ten treatments total. For facial hair, treatments are performed every four to six weeks. Underarm and bikini area treatment cycles are about six weeks apart. For backs, legs and shoulders, treatments are performed every eight weeks. It is important to stay out of the sun and tanning beds two to three weeks before and after treatments. Each treatment lasts from about 15 minutes (such as for lip and chin areas) to about an hour (for larger areas such as the bikini area). “We take the time to pamper our clients, and our services are very personalized. Because our clients return for several treatments, we are able to establish close relationships with them,” says Kelley. One of Emerge’s newest

SSaving Lives One Net at a Time The vision of two Tulsa women is saving children in Ghana by protecting them from malaria. By Duane Blankenship Kairos 10 was founded in 2010 as a result of medical mission trips and a desire to treat children with malaria. Founders of the organization are Dr. David and Phyllis Morris and Charles and Katheryn Pennington, all of Tulsa. “Malaria kills one in six children in Africa and is preventable with a mosquito net,” said Katheryn. The highest death rates occur in children under the age of five and pregnant women. Each net costs $12 in U.S. currency. The nets are purchased from and shipped by His Nets, a not-for-profit, located in Norman, Oklahoma. Kairos employs a team of Ghanaian women who make beautiful handcrafted bracelets and other jewelry with beads purchased from local merchants representing native regions. Beads are produced from recycled glass, vinyl records, fish bones and brass. “Kairos pays beaders four times the average daily wage,” said Katheryn, “a sustainable income that enables our beaders to provide for their families while helping eliminate malaria and the often resulting death caused by a mosquito bite.” Kairos also has a line of handmade shawls and purses.

Kairos 10 Founders Katheryn Pennington and Phyllis Morris meet with Kairos beaders. Behind the driving force of Katheryn and Phyllis, entire communities are aided. Since its beginnings in 2010, Kairos has directed the shipping of nets to four countries – Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and India – and has sold more than 18,000 pieces of jewelry. For every item sold, Kairos is able to purchase one insecticide-treated mosquito net, which will cover four or more

sleeping children and family members. To date, 15,000 nets have been distributed to villages by a partnering Ghana church. The head of the church knows which villages need nets and gets them promptly delivered upon their arrival. “If we can cover 75 percent of the huts within a village,” said Phyllis, “we are able to eradicate 95 percent of the malaria-carrying insects.”

According to the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 2010 and a resulting 660,000 deaths. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa, where a child dies every minute from malaria. Malaria is caused by a parasite that is spread to people through the bites of infected anopheles mosquitoes. They bite mainly between dusk and dawn, which is why it is so critical that children be covered by netting when they sleep. Ninety percent of the world’s malaria deaths are in Africa. There are currently no licensed vaccines against it or any other human parasite. Four fifth-grade classes in Jenks focused their efforts on Ghana villages where malaria was an epidemic and determined they wanted to help fund the purchase of mosquito nets. The students raised enough money to “net a village.” They also purchased soccer balls to donate to a Ghanaian school. They designed a T-shirt to promote the project, “Fight the Bite – Net a Village, Save a Life.” These students saw firsthand how their efforts could impact a child’s life on the other side of the world.

Life-saving Kairos bracelets from Ghana are available in Tulsa at Donna’s Fashions and Pizzazzy Monograms, Liv a Little Boutique in Jenks, The Village Shop in Pryor, and Crossing Bookstore in Oklahoma City. All U.S. participants (excluding retail locations) are volunteers, and no person is compensated for their time or talents. To date, there are 60 Kairos volunteers across the country who sell the products. They receive no compensation for their efforts except the satisfaction of knowing they are saving the lives of children with each item sold. Kairos’ proceeds provide malaria-eradicating mosquito nets plus funding for digging water wells, building pole barns for schools, and providing the drug, Coartem, to treat those contracting malaria. Please call (918) 695-6949 or visit www.kairos10.com for more information on how you can purchase bracelets, become a volunteer, and help save the lives of African children. RReveal Yourself Reveal Salon & Aesthetics at 91st and Memorial in Tulsa provides quality hair, nail and skin services. By Lorrie Ward Several months ago, when Nicole McGinnis opened Reveal Salon & Aesthetics, she wanted to create more than just a place where people could come for skin, hair and nail treatments by quality, trained professionals. She wanted to create this place within a familial environment, where clients could feel as comfortable with the atmosphere

around the stylist’s chair as they did while relaxing at home. Nicole bought the salon at 91st and Memorial in September of 2012 and changed its name to reflect the motto “Refresh, Renew, Reveal.” She felt that both experience and atmosphere were integral to earning the trust of clients who want to see the transformation that matches this

motto. She was happy that Master Barber DeAllen Brown decided to remain at the salon, and she set about adding a staff of qualified and caring stylists, including Stephanie Dawn Ritter, Shaela Fleig, Laurenn Williams, Audrey Loney, and Troy Edmonds. Troy’s wife, Debbie, also joined the team as nail technician. Everyone on

staff has years of experience. Troy, for example, has worked as a stylist for 40 years and Debbie, his spouse of almost 30 years, has been doing nails for 27 years. Both Troy and Debbie have maintained a solid clientele over their tenure of service. All stylists participate in continuing education as well, which is important in an industry with ever-changing trends and advancing techniques. One popular service right now is the Brazilian Blowout, a hair smoothing treatment that eliminates frizz – a common complaint in Oklahoma’s humid climate. Also available for those with curl and frizz problems is Keratin Smoothing. These two techniques can be performed for short or long term results. Nicole reports that the Keratin Smoothing treatments last anywhere from four to six weeks. “People are having their color and highlights done and then the Keratin treatments,” Nicole notes. “It’s best to do it this way, so that the Keratin treatment seals the color into the hair.” Nicole’s reputation as an esthetician is as solid as the reputations of her stylists, but since she will not sing her own praises, Nail Technician Debbie Edmonds does it for her. “All of my clients who go to Nicole for skin care love her,” says Debbie. “She’s got that touch.” Debbie herself recently visited Nicole for a few sessions of MicroPhototherapy and saw dramatic results after just one treatment. “When I was done, I

Page 9

wanted to hug her,” says Debbie. “She’s fabulous.” Nicole strives to help clients create unique skin care regimens for each particular skin concern. For example, she evaluates the skin to see if it needs a peel and at what level and frequency, and decides whether it could benefit from microdermabrasion or MicroPhototherapy. Her most recent addition to the menu is Face Reality, a program specifically designed for long-term treatment of acne. “One of the problems with acne is that people treat it too aggressively,” says Nicole. “The skin either gets too dry or it gets used to the product, which then stops working. Face Reality introduces its key ingredient at a lower strength and increases strength gradually, giving long-term results.” “Long-term” is what Nicole and the staff at Reveal Salon are all about. Whether you want to begin a lasting regimen for your skin or hair – or both – visit Reveal Salon & Aesthetics and experience the atmosphere where lasting results and relationships are created.

AArt Bike Tulsa

An exciting and unique art show is scheduled throughout the month of May to promote MS awareness and Bike MS 2013.

By Duane Blankenship Each year the National MS Society Oklahoma hosts a variety of special fundraising events for the purpose of raising awareness about multiple sclerosis. Funds raised help support programs and services available to Oklahomans with this disease. Programs provide knowledge, recreation, family and social support, and awareness throughout the greater Tulsa community. The annual signature event of the National MS Society is Bike MS, and 2013 marks its 28th anniversary in Oklahoma. Bike MS is not “just a bike ride,” but an experience for all who participate in the event. It is one of the best supported cycling events in our state. The two-day Bike MS 2013 will commence September 21 from the Agri Civic Center in Chandler and finish there the next day. Nearly 1,000 riders will join forces to raise money. Although Bike MS is a challenging event, riders return year after year, supporting the movement to create a world free of MS. A unique awareness campaign began three years ago in Tulsa to inform residents about the disease, local fundraising efforts, and the

annual Bike MS. This year will mark the third annual Art Bike Tulsa, which coincides with Tulsa International Mayfest in downtown Tulsa. Art Bike Tulsa will run May 1-31 at the YMCA of Greater Tulsa located at 418 S. Main. The event will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the entire month of May. Art Bike Tulsa will also be on display at Tulsa International Airport from June 1 through September 30. The presenting sponsor is SCFM Compression Systems. Art Bike Tulsa is an exciting, unusual, fun display of art made entirely of old bicycle parts. The unique explosion of creativeness is one that your entire family will enjoy. This year’s exhibit will include works of art from successful local artists and student artists from Union, Broken Arrow, and Booker T. Washington High Schools. Some of the featured Tulsa artists include Michael Christopher, Robin Green Tilly, Billie Sue Thompson and Jan McKay. Jan has been an MS volunteer for 23 years and has participated in Bike MS for 20 years. “I ride in honor

of my good friend, Rhonda Fletcher, who was diagnosed with MS 23 years ago.” Jan loves riding for the cause and has been blessed with meeting many great people along Bike MS routes. “I wish no one had to endure MS,” says Jan. “I feel good aiding in fundraising efforts to assist others.” Rhonda Fletcher volunteers at the MS Society office once or twice a week. “I am appreciative of the riders who endure Bike MS each year for me and others who have been diagnosed with MS,” she said. When first diagnosed, Rhonda went into denial. “My good friend Jan literally bugged me for years to get involved with the organization.” When Rhonda finally did, she was impressed by every person she met and was touched that they were doing so much for her and others. GGet Hip to Dr. LaButti Patient Kathy Hill is pain-free after her successful hip replacement. By Joshua Danker-Dake In 2012, Kathy Hill, of Tulsa, had her right hip replaced by Dr. Ronald LaButti. “I’d had my left hip replaced in 2003,” Kathy says. “I dealt with the pain and discomfort in my right hip for about two years, until the symptoms were as bad as they’d been in my other hip. It hurt so badly that I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything.” By this point, Kathy’s hip was bone-on-bone. “I couldn’t even get my shoe on or get in or out of my car without excruciating pain,” she says. “I was having trouble working every day because of the pain medicine I’d been taking, and I had stomach problems and heartburn all the time.” Her primary care physician recommended she see Dr. LaButti. “He took me seriously and he listened to me, which I really appreciated,” says Kathy. “And he didn’t make me wait for surgery – he scheduled me right away for a total hip replacement.” Dr. LaButti helped Kathy through a recovery that was initially very difficult, she says.

“My recovery was slow and very painful for the first couple of weeks. I was on a walker for six weeks and couldn’t put all my weight on my right foot. I did therapy at home for the first six weeks, I was back at work fulltime after eight weeks, and I did an additional four weeks of therapy once I was back to work. Dr. LaButti told me, step-by-step, what to expect – I did everything he told me to, and everything went just as he said. And his nurse was awesome – I could call and explain whatever was going on, and she would get right back with me.” Kathy says she was impressed with her experience with Dr. LaButti and his office at every stage. “Everyone at his office was very professional and considerate – they knew I was in a lot of pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible, and I never had to wait long at all for my appointments. After the surgery, Dr. LaButti checked on me every morning and addressed all my concerns. And when I got to my room, his office had already sent flowers, which was

really thoughtful.” Kathy recommends Dr. LaButti. “He took care of my pain. I don’t take any pain medicine now, and I don’t walk with any kind of a limp. I can put my shoes on now and get in and out of my car with no problem, and people who don’t know me would never know I’ve had a hip replacement, much less both hips replaced.” Kathy works for the Tulsa County Election Board. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, working in the yard, and enjoying nature and the woods. They offer commercial mowing services, leaf removal, debris hauling, and tree trimming, pruning and removal. They also do retaining walls, boulderscape, hardscape, concrete sidewalks, porches and driveways, French drains, and sprinkler repair. Lawns By Nature services both commercial and residential properties, and they work by the job, by the visit, or with a yearly contract. “We work with homeowner and property owner associations, large and small apartments, and we love to work with churches,” adds Andrew. Maybe you’re unsure about hiring a landscape company because you think you can’t afford it. “Give us a call. Don’t assume that because our services are so diversified that we’re not competitively priced. We’re eager to earn your business,” says Andrew. For more information, contact

year’s reunion adjutant, Ken Colley, OMA Alumni, Class of 1969. The Claremore High School Navy ROTC will raise the flag and patriotic music will be played to honor those who served in the U.S. military, commemorating the fact that “All Gave Some and Some Gave All” in a ceremony that never fails to inspire and touch the hearts of those who observe it. Oklahoma Military Academy was the predecessor to Rogers State University and occupied its place on College Hill for over 52 years. Once known as “The West Point of the Southwest,” the Academy graduated both high school and junior college students, many of whom went on to have highly successful careers in the military, civic, and civilian realms. Over the past few years, there has been a highly concentrated effort to locate and connect with OMA alumni, and the results have been phenomenal. Many of these alumni have taken an active interest in the growth and prosperity of Rogers State University. Many have established scholarship endowments, and OMA alumni have offered strong financial support for the

new RSU Student Dining Center, currently under construction on the west end of the Claremore campus. OMA alumni come from all over the United States to attend the reunion, and Dr. Boyle has been privileged to watch this event grow every year. She describes the reunion as important in preserving the history of OMA, Rogers State University, Rogers County and the military. “Thanks to the efforts of alumni who are committed to finding former OMA cadets, we continue to hear from newly found OMA alumni each week in our office,” she says. “This year’s reunion promises to be more extraordinary than ever before.” Be sure to visit the OMA Museum, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Meyer Hall on the RSU campus, 1701 W. Will Rogers Blvd.

PPrepare Thyself for Merriment The Castle of Muskogee’s annual Oklahoma Renaissance Festival runs May 4 through June 2. By Sheryl Sowell Travel to 1539 Castleton for the Castle of Muskogee’s Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. King Henry VIII and his sister, Queen Margaret of Scotland, are on progress through the fair land, and this year, they are joined by King Francis of France and King James of Scotland. There is sure to be mirth, merriment, and mischief throughout the Village. More than 600 costumed merchants, artisans, and performers populate Castleton, transporting visitors to the 16th century. Music, comedy, swordplay, and magic can be found on 15 stages throughout the grounds. They welcome several new performers to the stages this year, including Bawdily Harm (comedic swordplay), Black Oak Shillelagh (Celtic music), and Ed “Cheeks” Miller (sea shanties and more). Returning favorites include The Musical Blades, The Jolly Rogers, Karma Dogma, Ez N Dil, The Jester Rejects, Raks al Hassana Bellydance, the Laundry Lasses, and many more. Sir Thomas and Sir Richard of The Heroic Knights of Old joust twice each day in the Tournament Arena, The Royal Gauntlet Birds of Prey showcases the grandeur of hawks and

falcons, and Cast in Bronze fills the arena with the awesome sound of the Carillon bells. The Royal Luncheon is served each day by the arena, where you can dine with His Majesty while watching the tournament below. Inside the Castle Keep you can witness presentations to the Royal Court or attend the Queen’s Tea. Enjoy the 37,000square-foot Castle with its dungeon, Torture Chamber, catacombs, and so much more. While most of the festival is strictly family entertainment,

adults can sneak away to attend the King’s Smoker (21 and over) each afternoon for some bawdy humor. Children and families will delight in the newly expanded Woodlands area. Visit Excalibur Keepe to sign good behavior contracts; learn to make marbles, paper, and chain mail; play games; hunt for pirate treasure; and explore the Enchanted Faery Forest. Dance around the Maypole or visit the Black House or the Garrison to learn all about life in Renaissance England.

Sir Thomas and Sir Richard joust in the Tournament Arena.

Over 600 costumed performers, artisans and merchants populate Castleton during the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival. And, you can find refreshing drinks (from water to cappuccino to ale) at any one of the eight pubs in the Village. You are welcome to come in plain clothes, a costume of your own, or rent a costume for the day from the shop just inside the Main Entrance. You can even exchange money at the Bank for Castleton coin, accepted throughout the Village. Plan now for delightful May days at the Renaissance Festival! Richest Noodling Showdown Comes to Claremore The Battle of the Big Cats noodling competition takes place June 13-15, 2013.

By Tanya Andrews Claremore is known for its many Oklahoma legends. Legends like Will Rogers, Patti Page, Lynn Riggs and “Oklahoma!”, Andy Payne, Stuart Roosa, and J.M. Davis all bring fame to Claremore and visitors from around the world. Cowboys, Grammy Award winners, astronauts, and gun collectors, now champion noodler? Kaleb Summers, Claremore native, and team STOadventures, won the 2012 OKIE Noodling Tournament in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He has worn many hats in his young life, including graduate of Oklahoma State University, boxer, steer wrestler, hunting and fishing guide, and part of the blasting team in his family’s construction business, so adding noodler to his resume comes naturally. Possibly a like-character to Will Rogers, only his tricks are with flathead catfish and not with ropes, Kaleb’s home is the outdoors of northeastern Oklahoma. His noodling experience started in southeast Oklahoma when a friend took him fishing and he soon learned how to decipher between fish holes and beaver holes, while studying the tricks to find the flatheads. Wikipedia defines noodling as fishing for catfish using only

bare hands, practiced primarily in the southern United States. A noodler places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. Other sources, such as urbandictionary.com, describe it as a crazy person using their fingers as bait to catch a catfish. Kaleb is not “crazy” but is an avid hunter and fisherman whose life has revolved around the preservation of a fading lifestyle that once used to be the norm. “To release a trophy fish reveals a rather strong kind of character, for as sportsmen, we sometimes owe it to our quarry to live to fight another day. After all, the true thrill lies solely in the fight underwater,” says Kaleb. It was a big fight in June of 2012 when Kaleb and his team fought a flathead weighing over 70 pounds (70.46 to be exact) and won the tournament. Their winning fish was the largest on record for the 14-year event. Kaleb and STOadventures, along with Visit Claremore, Claremore Expo Center, NABATAK OUTDOORS, K95 and Fox 23, Summers Drilling & Blasting, Value News, Osage Casino, GRDA, Melton’s Sales, Pixley Lumber Company, Warren Cat, Reasors, Wild Country Meats, and BancFirst will host the

“Battle of the Big Cats…Route 66’s Richest Noodling Showdown” coming June 13-15. A total of $10,000 in cash in prizes will be awarded, with $5,000 going to the contestant/team with the “BIG” fish. Contestants must be entered by Wednesday, June 12 at noon. They can then check-in to start scouting and fishing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 and go until weigh-in on Saturday at 6 p.m. Contestants must be in the weigh-in line at the Claremore Expo Center by 6 p.m. and report to event staff, or be disqualified. Entry fees are $50 per person and are available online at www.stoadventures.net, www.visitclaremore.org, or in person at NABATAK OUTDOORS or the Claremore Expo Center. Contestants can fish any lake, such as Grand Lake or Hudson, or any river they wish to. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment will continue afterward for the crowds to enjoy. The public is invited to come out to the Expo on Friday and enjoy a fish fry, live entertainment, and a variety of vendors at the Claremore Expo Center. The tradeshow will open at noon and

A variety of fitness and health-geared events will be conducted by professional area fitness instructors, and each class will be held for one hour. Although the Monday through Friday classes are mostly for adults, there will be a class called “Mommy & Me” each Saturday of the month for moms and their children. This class will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Gift items will be distributed to participants every day, and you may learn more about Fitness on the Green by visiting the website, www.guthriegreen.com/fitness-green.

Boot Camp will be offered twice each week, Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. It is a one-hour class that provides a complete total body workout to help you get in shape or challenge your body to reach its fullest potential. You will experience intervals of power walking or jogging and spurts of cardio endurance, athletic drills, kickboxing and strength training. With the incorporation of high and low intensity intervals of exercise, your body is able to maximize its caloric burn as it enters the fat-burning zone. Other classes will include Tai Chi, Family Yoga, Fitness Walking, and Mommy & Me each Saturday morning.

The Family Yoga class is held each Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and a special Yoga class will be presented by lululemon each Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Friday Fitness Walking class will take a different route each week to expose participants to the history of downtown Tulsa. They will experience a synergism through the group class environment and will, hopefully, find ongoing support, motivation and inspiration to continue their walking experience for health and weight loss. Beginners and experienced walkers will feel comfortable during the workout and will enjoy the historic sites of downtown Tulsa.

organization goes beyond the suit with two programs, The Going Places Network by Walmart and The Professional Women’s Group (PWG). Dress for Success Tulsa accepts women from over 125 community partner agencies including but not limited to government agencies, homeless shelters, educational institutions, correctional facilities and domestic violence shelters. The Going Places Network is an eightweek program that strives to prepare unemployed and underemployed women to find and secure gainful employment. Dress for Success Tulsa helps build resumes, develops job skills, hosts mock interviews and of course dresses its participants for the job. At the end of each program, the women are honored in a graduation ceremony with their fellow peers. Once the participants secure employment, they are then eligible for the Professional Women’s Group. This group focuses predominately on job retention. They meet once a month with dinner and childcare provided to offer one another support and listen to keynote

city. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ goal as well, one step at a time. Rekindling the love that Tulsa has for the game at its highest level is the first priority. Four of the newer, yet most successful clubs in MLS are teams that played in lower divisions, and because of incredible fan support made the jump to the MLS. This is the Tulsa Athletics’ ultimate goal. This summer will be Tulsa Athletics’ inaugural season in the National Premiere Soccer League, the largest league in the United States, with 61 teams competing across the country. It is the perfect league for a new ambitious franchise to start its journey towards returning Tulsa to the forefront of the soccer map in America. Co-owner Sonny Dalesandro

Outdoor Soccer Returns to Tulsa soccer community which they had helped create. Their bond with the community is still evident today as thousands of athletes have played under their tutelage. Tulsa is revered across the country as a soccer city, with our youth clubs being some of the most talented and competitive. However, there has been a gap at the top adult level since 1985. This summer, the journey back to the top of the soccer map begins. “When support meets ambition, only success can follow in soccer,” said team co-owner Sonny Dalesandro. Dalesandro won “Rookie of the Year” that season and went on to have a six-year career, playing for the Milwaukee Wave and the Wichita Wings. “Some of my very earliest memories are of Skelly Stadium and the Tulsa Roughnecks, and today’s youth deserve that same impression that I was afforded.” Dr. Tommy Kern, co-owner of the Tulsa Athletics and a sports medicine physician for Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, grew up playing soccer in Tulsa and went on to play at Brown University prior to medical school at the University of Oklahoma. “We are excited to bring high-level soccer back to

Ryan was also an NCAA division 1 champion with the legendary, undefeated Hartwick College team of 1977. Ryan has coached at the youth, high school, semipro and professional level in New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma. “My staff and I are extremely excited to be a part of the resurrection of both outdoor soccer in Tulsa and the old Drillers Stadium at Expo Square and look forward to many entertaining, successful games being played there. The owners have done a

Orleans. Children will love the fun crawfish races, craw-fishing, and New Orleans Mardi Gras bead art. A portion of the proceeds from CrawFest will benefit the son of one of Hebert’s employees. Nathan Johns is a young husband and father who had the misfortune of getting West Nile Fever in June of 2012. Nathan remains hospitalized and is facing months of respiratory and physical rehabilitation. Proceeds from CrawFest will also go to Planted Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the poorest children and families in Nicaragua through their education program. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats, offering delectable fresh-cut meats and poultry, is open Monday through Saturday, with lunch and dinner served each day. Owner Ed “Cajun Ed” Richard explains what makes their authentic Cajun food so special: many of the ingredients and seasonings come from Louisiana, and the meat is fresh – the best of the best. “The timely combination of cooking and seasonings creates the authentic Cajun flavor,

which was previously found only in south Louisiana,” says Cajun Ed. These wonderful seasonings are all available in the largest Cajun retail space in Tulsa. To top off your meal, choose from a variety of made-from-scratch desserts – bread pudding, bourbon pecan pie, key lime pie, chocolate ganache peanut butter pie, traditional and chocolate pralines, and carrot cake. Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s Specialty Meats is located at 2101 E. 71st St. in Tulsa, on 71st Street just west of Lewis in the big red house. REMOVE CHLORAMINE FROM YOUR WATER

Chloramine Facts:

These statements can be found on the EPA website: http://water.epa.gov/lawsregs/rulesregs/sdwa/mdbp/ chloramines_index.cfm 1) Health Concerns- UNregulated disinfectant byproducts (such as nitrosamines—including nitrosodimethylamine, NDMA, iodotrihalomethanes, and iodo-acids): have been known to form from monochloramine. These UNregulated DBPs are found to be genotoxic (DNA damaging), cytotoxic (cell damaging), and carcinogenic (cancer causing) 2) Difficult to Remove from Water- Monochloramine can be more difficult to remove from drinking water that chlorine. Boiling water, allowing water to sit at room temperature, and/or reverse osmosis filters do not remove monochloramine from drinking water. 3) Environmental Hazard- Chloramines are toxic to fish and amphibians at levels used for drinking water. (In McLean VA, a main break resulted in killing all aquatic life in 9 miles of Pimmit Run.) 4) Leaches Lead in Pipes- The addition of monochloramine can make water more corrosive, which may lead to pipe corrosion and increased levels of lead or other contaminants in the water. (In 2010, the CDC reported that 15,000 homes in Washington, D.C. area might still have water supplies with dangerous levels of lead.) 5) Insufficient Research- The EPA admits that it has no respiratory, digestive, skin or epidemiological studies on the human health effects of chloraminated water.

Ammonia is being added to our drinking water! As of July 2012, the Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority has decided to add ammonia to all our water that we drink, cook, shower and water our gardens with. Ammonia mixes with chlorine to produce Chloramine, a water disinfectant with toxic byproducts that has been shown to cause damage to a personʼs health and property, as well as the environment.

individuals and families feel a real calling. According to Maria Carter of Choices for Life, they are currently in desperate need of foster parents to care for local children. The process of becoming a foster parent includes 13 weeks of free training, in which treatment families learn to create opportunities for their foster child to heal and grow. The goal typically is for the child to return to his or her biological family, with the interpersonal and behavioral skills to become a positive and accomplished adult. Each child is carefully

Choices for Life will show appreciation to its foster parents with a dinner banquet on May 9 at First Baptist Church to celebrate National Foster Care Month. By Sheryl Sowell Foster parents are truly special individuals. They take in children from abusive or neglectful situations who require therapy for medical or psychological conditions, and they stick with these kids to provide them the love and care that many have never known. Foster parents with Choices for Life Foster Care in Sapulpa give of themselves 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But on Thursday, May 9, they will be on the receiving end of a special appreciation banquet. As part of National Foster Care Month in May, Choices for Life will honor all of its foster parents. The dinner will be held at First Baptist Church in Sapulpa and gives the foster parents an opportunity to get all dolled up and enjoy a night out for themselves while Choices for Life therapists watch the kids. The appreciation dinner not only recognizes the generosity and commitment of foster parents, but also raises awareness about the need for more families who are willing to open their homes and hearts to these children.

Raising children is hard enough, but therapeutic needs create a whole new dynamic. Unlike traditional foster care, Choices for Life focuses on

children with a higher level of emotional and behavioral needs. Not everyone can provide the patience, love, strength and open mind that are needed, but many

evaluated and matched with a strong and stable foster family that will integrate that child not only into their family, but also into their community, school and church. It takes a unique person or family to open their hearts to these children. Those who were up to the challenge say it is one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in their lives, as they watch a troubled child blossom into a loving and responsible individual. All children — including the 408,000 American children and youth in foster care — deserve a safe, happy life. Young people in foster care especially need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis and unable to care for them. Choices for Life is a national agency with offices in Georgia, Oklahoma City, Checotah, Ponca City and Sapulpa. A new foster care class begins soon. Rev Up Your Savings It’s lake time! Consider refinancing your boat (or automobile, motorcycle or RV) with RCB Bank.

By Jocelyn Wood Refinancing your vehicle loan (for a land or water cruiser) could save you money. With summer loan promotions like RCB Bank’s 1.91% APR* on new, used and refinanced vehicles, now is a good time to review your current loan, or consider buying that new vessel you’ve been eyeing. Refinancing is not right for everyone, but it’s wise to know your options. RCB Bank Loan

Officers Barbara Renfrow and Roger Evans answer some frequently asked questions about auto refinances. What is an auto refinance? An auto refinance (or boat, RV or even an ATV) is when a customer is provided new financing for their loan in order to lower the loan interest rate or monthly payment. How does a refinance help me?

Let’s say you bought a car and borrowed $20,000 at 2.99% APR for five years. Your monthly payments are $359.30. If you financed that same loan with RCB Bank at its 1.91% APR*, your monthly payments would be $349.78, saving you $571.20 over the life of the loan. When should I consider refinancing? lowering your monthly payments or shortening the term of your loan? Maybe you want to consolidate debt at a lower rate of interest? These are all reasons to consider refinancing. The best advice is to visit face to face with a lender. See what they offer and compare that to what you have and what you are trying to achieve. You can stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk to a lender at no obligation. How is a bank loan different from a dealership or independent lender? Most dealers sell their car loans to big out-of-state lenders. Not all, but most. Also, note that dealers will typically charge additional fees. At RCB Bank, our rates and fees are very competitive and, for used cars, are often lower. We also maintain your loan locally and provide personal customer service to you and your family for the duration of your loan, not just when you sign loan papers. I just bought a vehicle from the dealership at a higher interest rate. How soon can I refinance? If you have the valid title for your vehicle, you can apply for a refinance at any time. If you just bought a vehicle, you may have to wait until the perfected title comes back before you can apply. What documents will I need to get started with the loan application? You will need a signed loan application and a copy of your current paystubs, a valid driver’s license, your insurance verification and the title of the vehicle. Additional documents

may be requested. Ready to start saving? RCB Bank is currently offering great rates on new or used vehicles, and refinances. We’re offering 1.91% APR* for 2006-2013 vehicles, boats or RVs and 2.609% APR for 2004-2005 models. Loans can be used to buy a new or used vehicle, refinance an existing loan from another lender, pay off credit cards or fund a home improvement project as long as the loan is tied to a titled vehicle. Download our loan application at www.RCBbank.com. You can also stop by any RCB Bank branch to talk to a lender or call 855-BANK-RCB. Barbara and Roger welcome you to stop by the Claremore RCB Bank Financial Center, located at the corner of Will Rogers and Lynn Riggs, to speak to them in person. *Annual Percentage Rate (APR) as of 4/15/2013, and includes a 3% discount for automatic debit of monthly payment from an RCB Bank checking or savings account. Rate could increase if automatic debit is cancelled at any time during the term of the loan. APR is based on a term of 60 months and $50.00 document preparation fee. Requires credit score of 650 or above. Limited offer with approved credit for loans secured by titled vehicles. Financing available for 100% purchase price (new) or 105% NADA trade-in (used) 2013 – 2006 models. Refinance of current RCB Bank obligation may not qualify. Other restrictions may apply. Member FDIC. Golf to Help Save Oklahoma Children The Demand Project’s four-player scramble is scheduled for Monday, June 10 at The Patriot Golf Club in Owasso.

By Duane Blankenship The Demand Project was founded by Jason and Kristin Weis. The organization directs efforts, resources and energy toward the eradication of sexual exploitation, with an emphasis on the exploitation of children. Whether it is victims of trafficking, forced prostitution, online enticement or child pornography, TDP’s mission is to end all sex crimes by targeting the demand side of sexual exploitation. “We want to stop sexual exploitation of boys, girls, and adult females,” said Kristin, “and we want to put an end to rape and forced prostitution.” TDP helps accomplish its mission through awareness projects, including education initiatives for parents, children, and communities; community action, including operating a Victim Tip Line and promoting legislation that strengthens current laws regarding sexual exploitation; and prevention measures, including Cyber Teams that research and document predator profiles and Community Survey Teams that collect predator network data. Here are some alarming facts to ponder. The United States Justice Department has estimated that close to 300,000 American youth are currently at

risk for becoming victims of commercial sexual exploitation. Two-thirds of the sex offenders in state prisons committed offenses against children, and more than 747,000 registered sex offenders are in the United States today. In Oklahoma, at any given time of any day, there are 1,500 to 2,000 people downloading and trading child pornography on their computers. It is estimated that 55 percent of those arrested in Oklahoma for child porn are “hands on” offenders. Each year, more children in America are victims of sexual exploitation than there are people dying from car accidents and illegal drugs combined. Yes, it is happening right here in northeastern Oklahoma, in the Tulsa area, in our neighborhoods. Child pornography is one of the fastest growing crimes in the country according to the FBI, and an average serial child molester may have as many as 400 victims in his lifetime. The Demand Project is funding Law Enforcement Task Forces that target sexual exploitation networks, and they are working with the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Human Trafficking (OBN),

www.ValueNews.com enforcement agencies going after child predators across Oklahoma communities,” said Jason. Both Kristin and Jason are available to speak and teach about the dangers of pimps, traffickers and predators. Force that is targeting Oklahoma predators in an effort to protect our state’s children. The tournament is a four-player scramble and is scheduled for Monday, June 10 at The Patriot Golf Club in Owasso. The Patriot features a diversity of terrain that is unique and

awe-inspiring. Team entry (four-member) is $1,000. Individual entry is $250. Registration, silent auction and lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. with tee off scheduled for 1 p.m. The awards ceremony will commence at 6 p.m. The tournament features multiple sponsor packages ranging from $250 to $2,500. They include Platinum and Gold Packages, Hole-in-One, Closest-to-the-Pin, Longest Drive, Executive Hole, and Hole Sponsors. If you or your company or organization is interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Jason. Each golf ticket will include lunch, 18 holes of golf with cart, a practice facility, snacks and beverages, a player gift package, and attendance to the awards ceremony. There will also be a hole-in-one prize that includes a 2013 Cadillac ATS Sedan with two-year lease, a set of new golf clubs, a golf vacation, and a Carnival cruise. The awards ceremony will feature two guest speakers, ICAC Director Steve Tanner and OBN Director Darrell Weaver.
