Q. MATICEVSKI is synonymous with allure and confidence, renowned for creating silhouettes that break all traditional design rules. Why do you think women are universally captivated by your work? From what I generally hear back, it’s that they feel transformed into the best version of themselves. Q. While MATICEVSKI has evolved since you won the Festival’s National Designer Award in 2002, your garments are undoubtedly identifiable as a MATICEVSKI piece. What makes your designs true to you? Thank you! I think it’s something that just
comes naturally. I also like to push myself into what I haven’t yet discovered. I have trained myself and understand all the techniques of traditional tailoring and garment construction, and once you know that you can do anything. The main thing I’d say is knowing how to touch material. An understanding and respect of women’s bodies, and slanting the perspective. Q. With technological advancements becoming more prevalent in fashion, where do you see the industry heading in the next five years? And will you dabble in some of these new ways of creating? I love that it’s developing in so many ways. I do think it needs to slow down a bit. There’s less
time to be conscious and considerate to what people want. There are so many areas dealing with technology that should be making the production easier and less damaging and these are fields that I want to explore. Q. Looking back on your illustrious career and accolades, is there a moment that stands out for you as truly your most proud occasion? There are too many. There are people with whom I have worked and created that definitely heighten the creative drive I love. Most recently would be collaborating with Emma Abrahams of Heart of Bone in creating the most unique jewellery collection. Some things feel like a lifetime ago, but another would have to be having worked with photographer and artist Justin Smith. He really set a tone for me early in my career that still resonates with me and the countless people involved at that time. Q. If there is one thing you want people to know about yourself as a designer, or MATICEVSKI as a brand, what would that be? One thing about myself as a designer I’d say is that I really love my job. I really thrive on the creativity and freedom I have to create what I want. As a brand, I guess that the brand is the business and the only thing of the brand is my name. I don’t like being the face of it and I shy away from things which mean I have to be present. I chose my profession. I didn’t choose the lifestyle associated with it. Which means my drive is for my work and the women who wear it to shine.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
Laura Brown
Described as one of the most powerful Australians in global fashion, Laura Brown is paving the way for a new type of editor-etiquette, with her down-to-earth nature, winning wit, and ability to break down the barrier between audience and celebrity. Her illustrious career in journalism has included time at US Harper’s BAZAAR and W Magazine, before taking over as Editor in Chief at New York-based US InStyle Magazine. Driven, insightful, and not afraid to shed light on current issues, Brown uses her platform to merge fashion with once-deemed taboo topics surrounding politics, equality, and social injustice. Laura is unapologetically herself, and the ultimate friend in fashion you want by your side. We caught up with her as she prepares to join us for the 2020 Australian Fashion Summit.
Q. You are one of the most relatable editors of this generation and continue to evolve the fashion/celebrity editorial landscape. Did you have a clear vision of this unique approach to your role, from the early stages of your career?
and are planning a big Badass gathering next summer. There are women out there doing incredible things (at a time when being engaged has never been more important), so the least we can do is give them a platform. Or a glass of wine. Or both.
Aha, the answer is no! I don’t think I had a clear vision of anything at the start of my career, apart from knowing that I wanted to be a part of things, and once I was, that I was happy to be there. And I would somehow telegraph that outwardly, with enthusiasm and some smarts. Also, I think I’ve been respectful of people, but not reverent, which I hope has resulted in a more accessible idea of celebrity. They’re just people, people.
Q. InStyle isn’t afraid to open discourse on equality, politics, and somewhat taboo topics, often untouched by media outlets. How and why do you ‘go there’?
Q. You took a bold idea of featuring badass women on the cover of InStyle and turned it into a monumental series for the magazine. What sparked this idea, and why are these editions so important? I was laughing the other day that my greatest professional contribution to date has the word “ass” in it. But it came from a more serious place. In 2017 President Trump announced a trans ban in the military. I was so furious that I ran into work and asked my team to profile a trans woman serving. They found a woman named Jennifer Peace – married, kids, served in every conflict of her generation. When I was reading about her, I said out loud, “Damn, what a badass.” And that was it – Badass Women became a monthly page in the magazine, then a dedicated issue each February and August. We also host dinners

you uncomfortable, it shows in both your character and the work that you do. Q. What are you most proud of achieving in your career? Paying the rent in New York City! And for recognition like this. Honestly, it means the world to me. Thank you so much.
I don’t think I had a choice. Trump was elected three months after I started at InStyle, and the culture changed radically. You can’t stick your head in the sand and just shoot women at home in ballgowns - it’s lazy and unimportant. I think if you focus on what is right and what is wrong, between empathy and the lack of it, it all becomes pretty clear. My job as an editor is to entertain and inspire, so if can slip some engagement into that spoonful of designer honey, all the better. Q. You have positively changed the way fashion is presented to consumers, and your readership as well as personal popularity has been testament to an overwhelmingly embracing response. Have there been difficult moments, or challenges to that journey behind the scenes? Oh, that’s very kind! I know this sounds basic, but if you’re enthusiastic about what you do, and you do it well, it will be embraced. I like to kill ‘em with kindness, mostly, and if people aren’t kind, I don’t work with them. It’s quite simple, after a while. If you don’t chase BS, or put yourself in situations that make

Eva Kruse
Eva Kruse is CEO and President of Global Fashion Agenda (GFA), a non-profit organisation which looks fearlessly at challenges in the fashion industry and takes on the responsibility to innovate and educate businesses globally on ethical and sustainable mindsets as much as practices. Eva founded GFA’s flagship event, the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, in 2009 alongside the UN Climate Change Conference, making it the world’s leading business event on sustainability in fashion. Her captivating presence is supported by her long list of accolades in sustainability and change leadership, and Eva leads by example in demonstrating that good values can be an organisation’s most valuable commodity. She is nothing short of a superwoman for the future of the fashion industry, and here’s what she had to say ahead of her appearance at the Festival’s 2020 Australian Fashion Summit.
Q. With such an important pursuit on your agenda, how did this all start for you? Ten years ago, the UN Climate Summit COP15 came to Copenhagen, and at that time sustainability in fashion was not on the agenda. I thought this was a major oversight as it was clear that fashion was a major contributor to the growing climate crisis (and many other environmental and social issues), so I saw this as an opportunity start the conversation within the fashion industry and to spark the idea of an actual movement in the industry. Q. You are living proof that one person can have an idea and make a difference. What would you say to individuals who believe their small contributions won’t have an impact moving forward? Remember that even little things matter. And if we all do a little it matters a whole lot! And if you’re truly passionate about it, hold on to your idea and keep believing in it. I’m an optimist at heart, which has helped me a lot on the way especially in difficult times. Another thing is to not work alone. It may be stated that I have founded Copenhagen Fashion Summit and Global Fashion Agenda, but it was by collaborating with brilliant people internally and externally, that I was able to bring my ideas to scale and grow them to where they are today. If you want to drive change you have to keep an open mind and heart and work with others. Q. What is the biggest challenge when trying to influence large companies to adopt sustainable practices and ethical philosophies?
On a personal level, leaders almost always admit that they feel a moral obligation to create positive change, but there is sometimes a conflict between moral views and business priorities. That’s why we need to emphasise the long-term business benefits of sustainable models. Q. You have said your mission is good for business, not a philanthropic quest, can you elaborate on this? You don’t have to sacrifice long-term profit to be sustainable. On the contrary, our research has proven that sustainability is an opportunity to improve efficiency, reap financial rewards and it is a way of developing your business models to meet the demands of the future both facing planetary boundaries, social justice and new consumers demands. Q. How do you think the fashion industry has evolved since you began the Global Fashion Agenda and Copenhagen Fashion Summit? Since the Summit began 10 years ago the agenda has progressed tremendously. Back then the conversation was at a pretty immature stage and only very few brands were able to or at least willing to share their work and thinking in the space. That has completely shifted. Today brands, retailers and manufactures are lining up to talk and share. And most importantly we see a much more open a collaborative approach from businesses to unified commitments to tackle issues such as circularity, fair wages
and carbon emissions and much more. The innovative solutions and sustainable materials that are being developed due to new technology are also really exciting. Though progress has been made, almost half of the industry, primarily small and medium sized companies have not yet taken any action on sustainability (meaning both social, environmental or ethical) and overall, progress is too slow to meet the planetary boundaries. It is urgent that they act now if we are to transform the fashion ecosystem. We’re fortunately (finally) seeing the policy and regulators getting their focus on fashion - and the right regulation plays a huge part in helping to push and support the right action taking. Q. How do you keep your strength and motivation in such a tough industry environment? It’s simply too important to not keep going. And although some days can be challenging, I can’t give up now, we’ve come so far, yet have such long way to go still. Just have to keep pushing harder. What keeps me going is thinking of my children, and what kind of a world they are going to inherit? Will they have to struggle with consequences of severe climate changes, loss of biodiversity, lack of natural resources, growing social in justice, poverty…? Or can we in fact rectify these challenges if all of us - those in power today - pull forces, set bold targets and put action behind it and work together towards creating societies, systems and business models that balance people and our planet.

Fashion is about more than clothes. It’s a reflection of culture, a form of selfexpression, and a creative industry that employs thousands of Victorians every year. The Virgin Australian Melbourne Fashion Festival brings together all this and more, in what is the largest fashion event in the country. Our Government is a longstanding supporter and partner of the festival, which this year, delivers a massive program of events. From spectacular runway shows in Melbourne’s World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building to a range of thoughtprovoking, innovative and off-beat activities across the state – there really is something for everyone. So, whether you’re interested in cutting edge style, furthering your career, or you’re simply looking to experience one of Melbourne’s best festivals, I hope you enjoy VAMFF 2020.
The connections between fashion, art, ideas, design and culture are at the heart of Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival – Australia’s biggest fashion event and a festival fit for our creative state. The Festival is where you can appreciate the art and mastery of fashion, meet the next generation of design talent, learn from industry leaders, and shop the latest collections fresh from the runway. Showcasing hundreds of local and international designers and brands over the course of the Festival, the Melbourne Museum precinct once again takes centre stage, transforming into a dynamic creative hub. Congratulations to the festival team, and all the participating designers, creatives and industry partners on another great program.

2020 CAMPAIGN CREDITS The Festival is proud to have worked with a dedicated and innovative creative team for our 2020 campaign, and thanks them for all their hard work and effort in producing Fashion’s Wonderland. This year’s theme, Fashion’s Wonderland, champions the joy and fun associated with a Festival, and the sense of occasion and arrival that coincides with that. Designed to break down the stereotype of fashion norms, encourage self-expression and to celebrate uniqueness, this year’s Festival encourages all to take part in Fashion’s Wonderland. The campaign pays homage to the wonderful backdrop of Melbourne; our fun and energetic team of talent roamed through hotspot locations including Bodriggy Brewing Co, Mitchell House, Rocksteady Records, The Royal Exhibition Building, Carlton Gardens and surrounds.
