We are proud to bring to you the world premiere of Done/Undone by Kate Besworth. Bard commissioned this play to be offered in person, but we knew it would be an excellent project to film if we had to change our plan. And now it's a full-length feature film.

Done/Undone is a direct response to a timely and important question – is Shakespeare still relevant? You might wonder why we would ask this question, when our Festival has been successfully programming Shakespeare's plays for over 30 years. But we are excited to ask, probe into the joys and problems of these plays and characters, and invite you to do the same. And there is no better team of artists to bring you this piece. Kate Besworth’s exceptional script has been brought to life through Arthi Chandra’s insightful direction and two stellar performances by Bard favourites Charlie Gallant and Harveen Sandhu. The result is an exhilarating and thought-provoking theatrical experience. We hope it challenges your assumptions, affirms what brought you to Bard in the first place or draws you to Bard for the first time, and makes you think about Shakespeare, theatre, art and life. We are also bringing you a number of digital ancillary events to enrich your experience of Done/Undone and give you more insights into our company and its extraordinary artists. There are Bard Explored panels with celebrated Shakespeare academics, artist talkbacks, Wine Wednesday, and more. Thank you for joining us for our Digital Season. And we look forward to next summer, when we can gather again under our beloved tents!

Done/Undone is inspired by a complex modern question: how well do Shakespeare’s plays stand the test of time – and should some of them not be staged anymore? This provocative and entertaining response brings multiple characters to life, including two battling scholars, a pair of actors in Hamlet, a theatre-going couple divided over Shakespeare’s appeal – and Shakespeare himself! Done/Undone‘s central themes could be seen as challenging for a Shakespeare festival. But, says Bard Artistic Director Christopher Gaze, “This production brings an original and thoughtful new perspective to complicated modern questions. We believe its spirit, wit and bravery will resonate with many people and points of view.” The film addresses questions of race, sexuality, and which voices are heard and valued – questions that are also acknowledged within Bard’s organizational values and its Company Commitments. Audience advisory: The production contains mature themes and strong language. ©BlueShore Financial Credit Union

playwright’s Notes Questions open doors. When we question, we’re asking to get closer to the truth. We are often fed (by our governments, our media, and our cultures) one truth, one history, one storyline about who we are, where we come from, what we should

to answer that question, you’ll hear in this film from a number of contemporary characters with differing opinions, differing backgrounds, and differing held truths about the Bard. I wanted to approach this piece from a prismatic angle - presenting to you as many viewpoints on Shakespeare as I could, to then have you form your own opinions and your own truth about him and his works. This is a time for asking questions. For lifting up and peering under the cultural boulders of our society. A time to ask ourselves why we Costume design by like the things we like, and Jessica Oostergo a time to look at Canada and where we came from with an informed eye and an open mind. There is freedom, power, and love to be found in curiosity. I invite you to be curious with me, and I hope you enjoy the show. Kate Besworth, Done/Undone Playwright

There are as many truths as there are individuals, and in order to come to a deep understanding of an issue, many, many perspectives must be taken into account, especially and vitally those perspectives that have been pushed to the side to make room for the ‘one’ truth. So, the question that opens the door of this piece is ‘Why do Shakespeare’? And

BMO is pleased to help young people in our communities explore the world of Shakespeare through the Bard in the Classroom workshop program.

Questions are the foundation of my artistic practice. They draw me into stories. They spark emotions, fascinations, an urge to delve deeper into a subject. When directing, I ask myself: Why is this piece necessary? Why now? And at this current moment in our Western-“Canadian” society, I believe we are in need of engaging in discourse, and opening the floor to diverse voices. There is an urge to push past the difficult conversations, to move towards a right and wrong way of being. The pandemic has heightened this, forcing us to sit in isolation, sitting on yes or no answers. I hope that as the world opens up again, we find the importance of community, and fill these communities with art, storytelling, and connecting with one another.

About Arthi Chandra

“We can be critical and still love something” is a line that has stayed with me since first engaging with Kate’s play. In directing Done/Undone, it is my intention to move the conversation from “Why or why not do we continue to produce Shakespeare?” to “how do we continue to produce Shakespeare, and what needs to change?” Artists all over the world have engaged with the Bard’s work with varying degrees of preciousness, these ideas aren’t new, but we must take hold of these questions and bring them to our own communities.

Arthi Chandra is a Vancouver based director, writer, and actor. Her practice is rooted in devising text-based new works, and adaptations of contemporary and classical plays. Her work examines ways in which identities of race, gender, class, and queerness intersect with one another, and how people and ideas are shaped by systems and institutions. She is a graduate of the theatre performance stream from Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts.

BARD BACK ON THE BEACH

Success is built through determination, hard work and strong communities.

Last November, our very own Board of Directors banded together with some of Bard’s visionary donors and promised $300,000 if we were able to raise another $300,000 from the Bard Community – and we did it! Over 2,000 donors generously responded to help us surpass that original goal and we are indescribably grateful.

Click here for a list of Bard Back on the Beach Donors

The Back on the Beach campaign has been vital to keeping the magic of Bard alive these past 18 months and the money raised will continue to lessen the negative impact on our performances, education programs, the livelihoods of artists, arts workers, and support staff, and many other critical operational needs. It deeply saddened us this spring when we realized we couldn’t present an in-person Season this year, as COVID safety regulations left us without sufficient time to build the site and mount our productions. But we know we’ll be back on the beach next summer, and are already actively planning for our 2022 Season when we will be gathered together under the tents – because of you.

Though the stage has been dark, the effort, perserverance and vision of emerging artists continue to inspire us. With initiatives like the RBC Emerging Artists Apprentice Directors program, we are proud to support the arts together.

From all of us here at Bard on the Beach, our deepest and most sincere thanks to everyone that made a gift. If you would like to support Bard further and continue to help us bridge our financial gap in these difficult times, please visit bardonthebeach.org/donations. Our various Membership levels unlock different perks and benefits, and we would love to welcome you into our Bard Member Family this season.

The Bacchanalia Gala Dinner + Auction is one of the most spectacular food & wine events in Vancouver, and features one of the most exclusive wine auctions in North America. The Gala – along with the rest of VIWF 2021 – could not go ahead this year due to the pandemic. Instead, the Auction was reinvented to become a virtual experience that still celebrated and provided access to outstanding wines and wine experiences.
