Something I swore I’d never do
By Lisa Manfield
Just over a year ago, I became one of the thousands of Vancouverites who had to reluctantly end my love affair with the city to migrate east (or south, or north) to the suburbs. It was something I had sworn I would never do. And yet, here I am, writing from my townhouse in Coquitlam. I really thought I could raise my baby in a 700-squarefoot rental apartment. But as soon as my bump started to grow, that nesting instinct kicked in. And while I don’t have formal research to back up my claims, I’m pretty sure that everyone who leaves the city to take up residence in the burbs does so for the same reasons: they’re either starting (or expanding) a family, or wanting (needing) more space. Often, it’s both. These were my reasons for leaving, and I’ve heard the same story from dozens of moms I’ve met during my past year on mat leave. Most of them moved here while they were expecting. All wanted to get into the housing market. None could do so in Vancouver. Vancouver’s housing market crisis is well documented, but what we don’t hear much about is what happens to those who defect to nearby suburbs. Those who still think of themselves as Vancouverites, but who now frequent Coquitlam’s parks instead of Stanley Park, Langley’s outlet malls instead of Pacific Centre, or Superstore instead of Whole Foods. What happens to those who live for a good Vancouver sunset, but can only enjoy them via their city friends’ Instagram feeds? Those who used to pride themselves on checking out every new restaurant opening, but now settle for the chain restaurant down the block. Those who would drop $200 for a pair of jeans at their favourite boutique, but now find themselves shopping at Walmart.
awesome scene and scenery: ocean views at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody, riverside walks along the Quay in New Westminster and forested paths in Coquitlam’s Mundy Park, not to mention artisan ice cream, craft breweries and food cart festivals — all the same things that make Vancouver great. It’s all here too. We’ve even got the Coquitlam Crunch, a shorter, less taxing version of the Grouse Grind. What surprised me about moving here is that, as much as I miss the city, I actually love what Coquitlam has to offer my little family. And rarely do I make the drive into town anymore. While I implore my city friends to come visit me (because I’m really not that far away, and I’m right next to Ikea, if you need further incentive), I myself haven’t been into town in weeks. Not because it’s all that far, but when you consider traffic on the highway, searching for parking and carting around a spirited baby, suddenly the attractions I used to savour don’t seem as attractive as doing a couple of simple laps around the park at the corner of our street. The street where kids run around in the field, swing at the playground and splash in the waterpark. That’s what makes my daughter squeal with delight, and that’s what’s most important to me now. Much more important than my former life, in my former city. n
I never thought I’d be one of those people. But here I am. And the truth is, I’m doing ok.
“I’ve got a new love now. My new home, here in the Tri Cities I didn’t leave Vancouver by choice, and I miss a lot of its attractions. But what I’ve realized is that I’ve got a new love now. My new home, here in the Tri Cities, has its own pretty 20

Accessorize like a Pro Even the grandest, most impressive projects rely on the success of the smallest elements; accessories are what give a space that finished look. They are where you’ll find insight into a homeowner’s personality or interests. The key to accessorizing is doing what feels natural to you, but the result should harmonize with your space – not distract from the overall look. It can be a balancing act. Often people look at a picture in a magazine of a room and can’t figure out why their space doesn’t look like that – the last 10% of the items brought in is what makes a space come alive and are usually the ones that are sadly overlooked. Accessorize like a designer; use layers, trays, & throws – not just a single vase. Accessories will have a greater impact if you display them in groups. Dispersing them will only diminish their significance, use odd numbers to create interesting arrangements.
22
B O U L E VA R D
“Don’t be afraid to take a risk” Use scale to your advantage, vary the size of accessories and use items of different heights. If you have a neutral colour scheme in your space you can work with it by introducing contrasts of lights and darks and introducing an accent colour. When accessorizing focus on your favourites, Loving stuff isn’t the same as displaying stuff. Accessories are like a women’s jewelry, you never want to wear all of it at once. When picking which sentimental pieces you want to incorporate into your space think colour, shape and size. Collections of small pieces often look cluttered and unfinished. There is no correct answer when it comes to accessorizing; each room and person has different needs but if think like a designer and always keep balance, proportion colour and creativity in mind when placing accessories and stay away from fake flowers, your project will come out great. More than anything have fun selecting your accessories and don’t be afraid to take a risk. n

“ I want music in every room” and “I want to be able to control my music easily”

hese are things we hear from our client’s everyday, but they’re also things that I’ve said myself. The quiet revolution of music in the home is called “distributed audio”–which makes sense, considering you’re distributing audio around your home. The reasons above are all powerful arguments for distributed audio, but there are a few key things you might not have thought about that may appeal to you. We’ll get to those in a shortly, but before we get to far, we should talk about the control system and speakers that make up the heart of a distributed audio system. One of the most popular distributed audio systems available is powered by Sonos.
Music in every room Let’s start with music in every room. With a Sonos Wireless Speaker or a Sonos-enabled in-ceiling speaker system, the Sonos network allows you to play music in every room in your home. You can play the same music everywhere, or you can set each room up as its own zone, capable of playing unique music in each space. This lets everyone in 24

the home enjoy the same music together, or it can allow individuals to personalize their space with their own playlist. Easy Control The Sonos app is available for free for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS, giving you easy access to streaming services from around the world. You can stream your own music, or choose to use Apple Music, Google Play Music, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, or more. The flexibility of Sonos comes from being able to select your music quickly and to get it to play in the room or list of rooms you want in a simple way. With Sonos, it’s one touch, making music fun and accessible for everyone in the home. n

BIG BEN LIMITED EDITION An exclusive timepiece that pays homage to London’s most famous monument. The latest creation from the watchmaker Mido pays homage to one of the world’s most famous monuments. The Big Ben Limited Edition was inspired by the slender silhouette of London’s famous four-dial clock tower. From the case and bracelet to the dial and movement, this unique piece makes numerous references to the neoGothic architecture of this iconic monument. Released in a limited edition of 500 pieces, this exclusive timepiece is the result of the Mido Watch Design Contest, a watchmaking challenge that was won by Neuchâtel-based designer Sébastien Perret. By revealing the circle within the square, he has imagined a daring, timeless design for the Big Ben Limited Edition watch that is in keeping with the Mido brand spirit.

Fine details give glorious new house a unique and timeless look. By Shawn Conner

Special
SpaceS A “masterpiece” — that’s how Wayne Arondus describes a beautiful new custom-built home. Arondus is the general manager of Troico Home Solutions, one of Vancouver’s premier renovation companies, which provides general contracting and project management services, interior design and custom cabinets and millwork. For the new build, Troico worked alongside the homeowners, architects and designers to design the spaces, and to “develop a continuous theme look throughout” the 10,000-squarefoot, three-storey home, Arondus says. “It’s a very unique, modern finish — not what you would generally see in a home that size. The homeowners took a lot of care going for a timeless
look, whether for themselves to live in the home or for someone else — it wouldn’t require a whole lot of changeout … It’s quite a masterpiece.” Troico provided all the millwork inside the house. The homeowner knew exactly what he wanted and collaborated with his designer as well as one of Troico’s in-house designers. Their eight months of work included a number of custom-designed spaces, including multiple guest bedrooms with bathrooms and walk-in closets, guest media room, file room, library, master bedroom with walk-in closet and en suite, main floor entertainment room, main kitchen, secondary spice kitchen, office, gym, and a wine-tasting room and cellar that fits over a thousand bottles.
B O U L E VA R D
31
“The cellar is a real focal point,” Arondus says. “The end result is a look that the homeowners were very pleased with, and we made it work within the space.”
Arondus figures Troico spent at least 20 hours on the design of the cellar and tasting room, another 60 hours of actual millwork and 30 hours of installation. “It’s one-of-a-kind and it’s gorgeous.” The office is open-plan, with a large working island and surrounding desk space and large media centre. It was designed to take advantage of the home’s location and view, which looks out towards the marina near the harbour. “The homeowner wanted a very simple look, but functional, where you could roll out large plans or any other details on a large island workspace,” Arondus says of the office design. “It’s a very peaceful work space.” For the kitchen, Troico and the homeowners wanted simple lines, with large, open eating and cooking spaces.
“It’s a bright, open space, and very functional,” Arondus says. “Anyone can walk in and be comfortable in it.” Arondus takes special pride in some of the work on the main floor, including the kitchen spice room, library and en suite walk-in bathroom.
32
B O U L E VA R D
The latter has floor-to-ceiling mirrored cabinets and a walk-in closet with what he calls “a little bit of bling — a dressing-room table island in the middle.” While the house represents a high-end custom job, Troico also works with homeowners on a tight budget. “Troico is essentially a mid- to high-end custom cabinetry manufacturer,” Arondus says. “We offer a variety of cabinetry. Customers come to us and we provide them with the solution to their homes.” President Mike Richter co-founded Troico four years ago, and has based the company on the three pillars of the renovation and development industry — design, manufacturing and building. The company also keeps up with current trends in the industry, Arondus says. “Everything transcends from fashion to furniture right into their cabinetry, where we’re seeing certain types of styles or material changes,” he says. “With Troico, our philosophy is, you come to us with an idea that you want to change or renew, and we guide you through the entire process until we come on site and finish our installation.” The company has in-house designers who can help customers through the process of changing or renewing their spaces, whether that means the entire home or one particular room.
34
B O U L E VA R D
“We can help integrate the lighting, the colours, the countertops and all the other accessories,” Arondus says. “It’s not just providing people with a new package; it’s about providing them with a new space that will transform to whatever they’re looking for.” The Coquitlam-based company, which manufactures its cabinetry inhouse, also prides itself on being a fixed-price general contractor. “People come to us because they’re not going to have sticker-shock,” he said. “That tends to be a real big positive for Troico.” One area the company excels in is bookmatching, which is the practice of matching two (or more) wood or stone surfaces, so they mirror each other, giving the impression of an opened book. A recent project was an upper floor renovation in an older home in New Westminster. For the kitchen, Troico designed and installed a bookmatched walnut face-frame with walnut inset doors, and a continuous theme. “It [the bookmatching] provides that old world craftsman look, with the beautiful flow of the grain through it,” Arondus says. “It’s a very modest kitchen, but when you walk in it’s just got that wow factor.”
B O U L E VA R D
35
The kitchen also features a seafoam, glass-composite countertop, sourced out of the U.S. “We search for unique stylistic components,” Arondus says. “The countertop becomes a unique centrepiece for the home.” A lot business comes to Troico through satisfied customers. “We’re seeing a lot of word-of-mouth on completed millwork packages where customers are very pleased with the end result.” Arondus says that the market for renovations “is quite robust” at the moment. “We’re continually working around our very busy schedule to take people in. It’s a great time to be in the millwork construction business.” n

Your new home will provide you with your own personal space and refuge from the outside world. The area in which the house is located will be an important determinant of how much you enjoy “where you live.” This is why you should compare locations as carefully as you compare houses. Before you find the perfect house, look or the most suitable neighbourhoods. First, weigh the pros and cons of living in the city, the suburbs or the country. Your decision will depend on factors such as your budget, personal tastes, your employment situation, where children attend school, and how you like to spend your spare time. Be sure to consider how you will get to and from work and school and to places in your spare time. Walkability in and around Metro Vancouver is becoming very important as the city continues to grow and densify.
Many neighbourhoods are designing bike and walking trails. New extensions to Skytrain are in the plans and being built.
“Make sure the police and fire protection is adequate” Think about the amenities and services you will require. Shopping, medical services, schools, restaurants, sports and recreation centres – can you walk to meet your needs, or will you have to drive? Certain considerations will be important regardless of your household. Make sure the police and fire protection is adequate, and also garbage collection. The other side of this equation involves how much you will be asked to pay in local taxes in the jurisdiction. Check with local municipal halls to answer these questions. There are countless other features that you would want to consider in finding a location that best suits the needs of your

household. A good way to organize your thoughts is to prioritize your requirements, by importance to you in one list. Use this list to make notes as you check out various neighbourhoods. Many real estate professionals believe that location is the most important factor affecting the value of a home. By doing your homework and finding the location that best suits your needs, you can settle comfortably into your new neighborhood and get the maximum enjoyment from your new home. www.gvhba.org for more home buying resources. n

What's brewing in the kitchen? Cabinets that are beautiful inside and out Written by Kelly Bai Translated by Risa Liu
The kitchen is the heart of the house, and for anyone who wants a beautiful home, an unappealing kitchen is not an option. Topping the list of importance are cabinets, which can immediately define the attractiveness index of a kitchen. So, what are the trends in kitchen cabinet design? How can one design a stylish and powerful kitchen cabinet? Donna Verlaan, sales manager and designer at Kitchen Craft shares her views. First, a lot of elements based on wood are emerging. Current home design trends are increasingly moving towards a relaxed and casual feel. For example, this year’s styles are mostly simplistic, featuring clean lines and the use of more natural elements. Warm woods are broadly used in designs and, combined with other natural elements, create a clean and straightforward effect. As for kitchen cabinet colours, the following are overarching trends. You can make a selection based on your personal preferences or home furniture colours.
Grey is still in vogue. Although white remains the colour of choice, often serving as the base colour of kitchen cabinets, gentle grey is challenging its status. This light grey paired with re-dyed wood elements from Kitchen Craft, looks stylish, simple and comfortable.

A pairing between blue and light grey demonstrates good taste.
Combining and pairing two colours is another trend. The sharp-looking white-and-black pairing is most popular, with the distinct contrast making it classic and stylish. Another idea is this year’s trending colour — blue. Pair it with re-dyed wood elements and the results are warm, calming and outstanding. B O U L E VA R D
45
Warm-coloured solid wood kitchen cabinets are also popular this year, augmenting the natural warmth of the wood.
And if you like bright colours, this is great news for you, as current kitchen trends allow for more personal expression. Pick a colour you like and bring more expression to your kitchen.

Colours make cabinets beautiful on the outside, but what about the inside? After all is said and done, a kitchen cabinet’s purpose is to store items. Without sufficient storage space, or if the design is not well thought-out and unable to fully utilize the space, even the most beautiful kitchen cabinet can be ruined. A kitchen cabinet storage system designed specifically on the needs of the individual can tidily store all kinds of utensils and canisters, allowing the kitchen to be beautiful on the outside and pleasantly organized and convenient as doors and drawers are opened. Also, a custom made kitchen cabinet can contain special-ordered storage spaces based on personal needs, such as wine and drink racks.
Finally, Donna suggests that if you really want your kitchen to be special and fulfill your various needs, it is a good idea to get in touch with an experienced kitchen designer to create your personal, custom-designed storage kitchen cabinet. n B O U L E VA R D

ALBERNI
Vancouver’s Fifth Avenue Revamping Alberni Street Vancouver’s hot new luxury district By Kelly Bai Translated by Risa Liu Once the sun sets, especially on the weekends, one specific street in the heart of downtown Vancouver is typically filled with luxury cars — Bentley, Ferrari and even Rolls Royce can turn the normal streets of Vancouver into an international automobile exhibition, and there always seems to be a motorcade right in front of the intersection traffic light at Burrard Street, left towards Alberni. A few years ago, this street was so quiet it almost seemed neglected. There was a Dollar Tree Canada, a 7-11 convenience store, a duty-free store and few other shops. Apart from the dim street lights and flares from sporadic shops, the rest of the street sat in darkness. Then suddenly, one day, people discovered a place in Vancouver that’s comparable to Champs-Elysees in Paris, Fifth Avenue in New York and Bond Street in London. Alberni has been reborn, loaded with many international big brands, and elegantly rising as one of the world’s top shopping streets. B O U L E VA R D
51
Alberni St. Spanning east from Burrard Street to the west of Bute Street lies Alberni Street’s most vibrant section. Shangri’La Hotel, Tiffany & Co., De Beers and few other international big brands are all assembled here alongside high-end restaurants and coffee shops. In 2013, De Beers Diamond Jewellers acutely identified this street’s tremendous prospects, opening a 1,700-square-foot flagship boutique store, marking its first appearance in Canada. In the following years, momentum on the street continued to flourish. Givenchy, Tory Burch, Strellson, Moncler
52

and Lao Feng Xiang Jewelry came one after the other. Long-time tenant Tiffany & Co. expanded its storefront to a total of 4,700 square feet. Prada’s sumptuous, 7,700-square-foot specialty store opened on March 11 at the corner of Thurlow. Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre held a grand opening ceremony soon after. Major brands like Rolex have become veteran tenants here. Shangri’La decided to shut down its ordinarily performing lounge to welcome the luxury brand Rolex. The 2,500-square-foot renovation took a long time to complete , but ultimately
VANCOUVE R S TR E E T
achieved a most grandeur image. At the intersection of Thurlow and Alberni sits the pinnacle of luxury storefronts, and one of the most visited area for locals and tourists alike. This area is rapidly expanding towards Robson and Georgia. At the southeast corner of the intersection is a property purchased by Canadian developer Concord Pacific eight years ago. Now, De Beers, Tory Burch, Moncler and Prada are tenants, with National Bank, Chaumet and Saint Laurent opening later this year.
A recently completed commercial building at the southwest corner will be the home of Italy’s Brunello Cucinelli, Versace and menswear Strellson, becoming a new force at this shopping district. Across the street, long-time tenant Burberry and luxury fashion-wear Escada will extend Alberni’s commercial space towards Georgia. Analysts have concluded that bringing international branded retailers to the Alberni area is a growing trend. There will be more reputed brands opening on Georgia and Burrard, joining together

Alberni St. with the Alberni district to become a unified luxury shopping experience. Having high-end retailers ups the need for highend eateries, and a wide variety of dashing restaurant selections is one of the area’s most prominent features, attracting local food-lovers — often in their luxury cars. Searching for steaks? Three restaurants have the answer, including Black + Blue, with its ritzy décor. Its most outstanding feature is its uniquely flavoured, signature, dry-aged steaks. It also offers a wide selection of fresh seafood dishes. Chain-restaurant group The Keg also leapt into the luxury district, offering up an exceptional steak option. Canada’s first Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant, Kobe, also calls Alberni Street home. Here, visitors can savour Japanese Teppanyaki steaks alongside specials effects — like fire tricks. For those wishing to try the best in West Coast food delicacies, Coast is a premier choice. All of its seafood is locally sourced, making it eminently fresh.

Visitors are encouraged to try Coast’s famous seafood towers and raw oysters. Italian Kitchen Restaurant, across the street, has an elegant décor, and serves up delectable, thin pizzas. During the weekends, diners from all of these restaurants collectively create a vibrant scene on the streets of Alberni. Apart from western cuisines, Pink Elephant offers delicious traditional Thai food. Its modern atmosphere and $10 set lunches often attract nearby working professionals. Celebrated Chinese diner Kirin Restaurant is on the same street. Whether it’s a weekday or weekend, Kirin is so popular people need to reserve in advance. Aside from Tim Hortons and J.J. Bean, high-end patisserie Thierry is another pleasant spot for a quick recharge from shopping. A simple cup of espresso or slice of cake completes the perfect shopping experience. Alberni has indeed become one of the city’s most charismatic spots. Just have a look at all those luxury cars. n

RAIN oR SHINE Global’s Yvonne Schalle has it covered By Shawn Conner

RAIN oR SHINE Even as a kid, Yvonne Schalle wanted to get into television. The Global TV meteorologist just wasn’t sure how. So, after completing a Bachelor in Communication at Simon Fraser University, she did what anyone in her shoes would have done — she went backpacking in Europe with a friend for two months. Returning to Canada, she stopped in Toronto to visit her brother, and started applying for jobs. She lucked out with an intern position at a local station. “I was on-air by the second day,” Schalle recalls. Interviewed at Global headquarters in an industrial part of her hometown of Burnaby, Schalle is as friendly and outgoing as her onair personality suggests. It’s easy to see why her bosses were so eager to get her in front of the cameras. Her exotic look is the result of mixed parentage — a Swiss-German father and a Cantonese mother. Her maternal grandparents were originally from Canton, and immigrated to Malaysia at young ages. Her paternal grandparents, now deceased, lived in St. Gallen, in Switzerland. “Both sets of my grandparents never spoke English,” she said. “And both my parents spoke their mother tongues to me.” As a result, Schalle grew up speaking Cantonese and Swiss-German, and didn’t start learning English until she went to school — although her older (by two years) brother would come home speaking a few words. She still speaks Cantonese to her grandmother everyday, and with her mom “if we don’t want someone else to understand.” She took Communications at SFU because she
thought it might lead to the career she wanted, but also because, as a first-generation offspring of an immigrant family, she knew a university degree would be important to her family. Following her first broadcast job in Toronto, Schalle moved to Calgary, where she did mostly entertainment and lifestyle segments. “I always was interested in weather reporting, but I just never came across the right job. All the ones I had applied for needed years of experience, so I never had the opportunity to get my foot in the door until someone was away.” While in Calgary, she occasionally filled in for the regular weather person, and then returned to Toronto to work at The Weather Network and CityNews. At the same time, she enrolled a three-year correspondence broadcast meteorology program through Mississippi State University. She completed the program two years ago, one year after she’d moved back to Vancouver for the job at Global. Now she delivers weather reports for the station, regularly on the weekend and sometimes filling in during the week. Even though most would perceive the weather in Vancouver to be, in a word, consistent (in two words: consistently wet), Schalle never finds the job boring. “The draw is, every day is different,” she

RAIN oR SHINE says. “Like any news story that you’re following — every day you look for something else, a little nugget that makes today different, or stands out.” She adds, “And everybody checks in the morning. If you have any event, you’re always looking ahead. You plan your day around the weather.” Vancouver is less exciting than Toronto, she admits — at least when it comes to weather. “In Toronto, you get a lot of active weather— you get the thunderstorms, you get the snow, you get different conditions. In Vancouver, people say, ‘Aren’t you talking about the rain everyday?’” What they don’t realize, she says, is that “Vancouver is one of the hardest places to predict in the world, just based on our geography. All the systems are developing off the water. By the time it makes its way inland, you’re able to predict or have a better idea of what’s coming. But people always just assume, like, ‘Oh, it’s just gotta be rain all the time.’ But it’s not really the case.” In her downtime, Schalle skis, runs and golfs. Skiing is something she did from an early age on family outings, on account of her Swiss-German father; golfing she picked up through her maternal grandfather.

In another life, the Beyoncé fan says, she might have been a musician. Recently, she recorded a Letters to a Younger Me video for the Vancouver Sun. Schalle decided that she would tell her younger self “to read more.” “I just don’t read a lot. I still think I should be reading more. For me it was a language thing. I should’ve been reading more in English to hone that a bit more. I learned everything by word-of-mouth. But I’m such a visual learner, like with weather, I need to see everything.” When it comes to putting together a weather report, Schalle considers what people most want to know. “I always think people just want to know the basics: ‘I’m getting up, do I need an umbrella, coat, is it cold, is it hot, if it’s raining how long is it going to last?’ I could go into the science of it, but I think people are like, ‘I have five minutes here.’” n

Clarins: Green Beauty Great beauty products emerge from natural plants Written by Kelly Bai Translated by Risa Liu
66
B O U L E VA R D
In February, Clarins released new products for 2016, including a whitening serum (Mission Perfection Serum) and UV 50 sunscreen. Natural plant ingredients are a major appeal of this skincare brand, and these two products are no exceptions.
B E AU T Y
The newly launched whitening serum contains acerola and ginkgo biloba extract, and are especially good for issues relating to facial spots, dull skin, acne marks and others. According to Clarins, speaking at the new product release, the company has worked with a world renowned research centre, and for the first time discovered the culprit behind the appearance of dark spots —exosomes. Exosomes are the messengers sent by keratinocytes to melanin and, when exposed to external erosion such as UV ray and others, will send “erroneous” messages, leading to an over production of melanin. Clarins discovered that acerola extract has the ability to serve as extracellular chromosomes, blocking these “erroneous” messages, lowering the over-production of melanin and returning it to a normal level, and helping the skin maintain a natural and balanced colour. The purpose of the ginkgo biloba extract is to target redness in skin. Changes in capillaries can cause redness in the skin, and the ginkgo biloba extract contained in the whitening serum can promote microcirculation in the skin, helping restore the reflection of light on hemoglobin, decreasing the amount of redness. Clarins’ UV 50 sunscreen is based on the original plant extract foundation, with the added groundbreaking component of sanicle extract. This new formula is even more effective in fighting against skin damage caused by UV rays, free radicals and pollution, allowing the skin to maintain a youthful texture. This new sunscreen possesses higher UV ray defense and fights against damage caused by UVA and UVB, as well as absorbing and deflecting UV rays off of the surface of the skin — ultimately preventing it from entering the skin. It stops the emergence of dark spots associated with old age and dullness of thebskin, and maintains the skin’s healthy colour. It can also maintain moisture in the skin and prevent redness, allowing the skin to be softer, healthier and more youthful. Established in 1954, Clarins is an old French beauty brand, built on its pure-plant skincare lines, and initially developing a plant essential oil product. In its development of over 60 years, it has never changed its brand principle of “absolutely natural.” Even with the rapid rise of chemical products in the early 1970s — when natural-based skincare products where viewed as outdated — Clarins refused to change its founding principle. All product development is based on plant-based essence being the main active ingredient. A skincare handbook given to customers also clearly states all plant-based ingredients in the products, and the use of each ingredient. B O U L E VA R D

Other than the two aforementioned new products, Boulevard Chinese magazine has also specially selected the following products that are also suitable for Asian women and mature skin use.
Shaping Facial Lift Serum This facial slimming serum is the king of Clarins’ makeup products. It contains several plant extracts, including Butcher brook, Ginkgo Biloba, Butcher’s broom, parsley, wheat protein, Amazonian Herb, mangosteen, caffeine, ruscus aculeatus and others. It’s lightfeeling, non-greasy and easy to absorb. In particular, its glycerin component maintains the softness and moisture of skin, allowing oily skin to breathe freely. Its fresh texture allows it to immediately firm the skin and tighten pores, displaying the renewal and brightness of skin. Its Vitamin C and parsley ingredients help evenly brighten the skin and simultaneously display a tightened facial contour that possesses elasticity; while mangosteen, caffeine, ruscus aculeatus and other main ingredients promotes firming, and Amazonian Herb improves facial contour. With everyday use, the facial contour is more defined and youthful.
Extra-Firming Day Cream Suitable for many skin types and containing white tea and Succory Dock-Cress that rejuvenates the skin, this product lifts, balances and smooths the skin, notably alleviating the signs of aging skin, allowing the skin to become firm in a moment, and display the effects of continuous nourishment. Most suitable for mature skin, its ingredients include Acetyl tetrapeptide-5, guaranteeing to alleviate puffiness, allowing the skin to look younger, promoting a more defined facial contour, and significantly lessening the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Extra-Firming Night Cream Clarins’ intensive night rejuvenating care cream contains skin-relaxing rosemary, skin-firming alfalfa, and skin-rejuvenating glistin multi-peptide repair serum, lifting and balancing the skin during sleep, and displaying a glow upon awakening. Paired with the effects of New Life Firming day cream, it can smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, allowing the facial contour to be more defined, significantly increasing the appearance of younger skin.

Extra Firming Neck Cream This product aims to solve neck wrinkles, loss of elasticity in the skin around the neck, rough neck skin and other neck skin-aging issues, maintaining the softness and firmness of the neck’s skin, and allowing it to look younger. With everyday use, it allows the delicate and fragile skin around the neck to look softer and smoother. A light-weight cream, it is non-sticky and non-greasy — like wrapping the softest of silk scarves around the neck.
Double Serum Generation 6 Clarins’ 6th generation revolutionary formula presents a breakthrough in solving the technical difficulty of combining water-soluble and oil-soluble extracts by specially selecting 17 rare and precious plant extracts from all continents of the world. Standing on one of Germany’s finest public squares, Dresden’s Theaterplatz in the Innere Altstadt (Inner Old City), I’m awestruck by the extraordinary baroque architectural masterpieces that surround me. in front of me sits one of the world’s most renowned and treasured opera and concert houses, the ornate and stately italian renaissancedesigned Semperoper. Behind, rises the majestic italian high Baroque styled hofkirche of dresden, originally built for royalty; the palatial structures of the famed Zwinger, formerly part of the dresden fortress; and the rococo and neoclassical styled palace, now housing one of the world’s impressive old Masters art and famed porcelain collections. after the destructive and controversial Second World War carpet bombing of the area in february 1945, nearly all of the city was destroyed, including the treasured old Baroque 72

centre. i remember as a young child seeing horrific photos of this decimation, but after the post-war Soviet take-over and german reunification in 1990, the city has rebuilt itself much to its magnificent former glory. it’s october, in time for the autumn festivals, and we walk through the glorious formal ornamental gardens, lawn and fountains of the Zwinger — somewhat reminiscent of france’s versailles but on a much smaller scale — through the palace roadway and onto the magnificent neumarkt square, with its crowning glory, the dresden frauenkirche (church of our lady). this stunning and monumental Baroque church, built in the 18th century and featuring one of

the largest domes in europe, was destroyed in the bombing. the remaining ruins, left for over 50 years as a war memorial, were finally rebuilt after germany’s reunification, and the church reopened in 2005 after receiving many international donations and funding. outside, on the grand plaza surrounded by the splendor of Baroque architecture, buskers perform their talents from opera to piano keyboards (yes, we saw actual grand pianos on moveable carts) to comical clowns. there are the numerous outdoor cafes and konditoreis (pastry shops) to settle and relax observing this magnificent city.
intricately carved wooden christmas ornaments, the copious displays herald the start of the festive season. Besides offering up the popular sausages, it’s the season for wonderful hearty fare, and germany is renowned for thick, rich and comforting Saxon potato soup, garnished with lardoons of smoky bacon — perfect to keep bellies warm in the cool evening autumn air.
Thick slices of the juicy and fatty pork capped with golden, crisp skin, slightly infused with mild smoke.
it’s the celebration of the autumn harvest so the southern part of the spacious neumarkt square is filled with various vendors, food stands and, of course, beer and wine gardens. from cornucopias of sausages — dried, grilled and boiled — to hills of aromatic cheeses, molten honeys and brilliant preserves, alongside
Sauerbraten, regarded as one of the national dishes, is slow-braised wine and herb marinated beef, somewhat like our comforting pot roast, smothered with a densely rich dark reduced gravy and accompanied with braised red cabbage and the ubiquitous kartoffelklösse (large potato dumplings) or the wonderful handmade egg and flour Spätzle, both made to soak up the aromatic reductions. We head to bean & beluga, a one-Michelin-starred restaurant, located across the river away from the old town, and in a charming neighbourhood of shops, local businesses and regional city parks. contrasting from the more traditional restaurant interiors with hearty foods, chef Stefan hermann’s intimate twolevel eatery has a sleek, stark and modern look, complimenting the kitchen’s simple and artistic plates from its refined kitchen. for something completely classic, there are the 18th century, vaulted cellar ceilings of Sophienkeller im taschenbergpalais restaurant. Built in former cellars and foundation walls of the “einsiedelsche häuser” buildings that date back to the 14th century, the restaurant’s traditional Baroque Saxon interior is complemented with servers in period costume. the kitchen features a glorious cast iron and brick oven rotisserie where the restaurant’s famed suckling pigs are roasted slowly over a smothering fire pit. thick slices of the juicy and fatty pork capped with golden, crisp skin, slightly infused with mild smoke, is adorned with a reduction that’s heady with marjoram, sauerkraut and a potato dumpling, the size of a five-pin bowling ball. another Saxon specialty, roulade of Beef, includes thinly sliced beef filled with onions, mustard, bacon and gherkins, rolled and slow braised in a deep claret reduction. there’s no light dining here! taking the efficient dB (deutsche Bahn) high speed trains, we head southwest to the Medieval city of freiburg, and arrive at the family run boutique Park hotel Post, set in a charming neoclassical building overlooking neighbouring landscaped gardens.

Surrounding the square are splendid buildings from the historical historisches kaufhaus (Merchant’s hall), the financial centre built in 1520, featuring its ornate red façade with coatsof-arms from former habsburg emperors, to the beautifully painted altes rathaus (old city hall), built in 1559. down the street is another medieval marvel, the ornate Zum roten Bären (the red Bear), considered the oldest “gasthof” in germany, built on existing foundations from 1120.

Still a charming rustic inn, this intimate hotel features a wonderful restaurant featuring traditional and updated Badische style cuisine. Being in the Black forest and in Baden Württemberg, freiburg is renowned for its superlative cuisine as well as its numerous Bierhaus (beer houses). the local Badische cuisine is hearty and comforting from cured, smoked pork shoulder to creamy onion soup, cold-smoked marinated Black forest ham, fried potatoes, plum cakes and the renowned white asparagus. But perhaps the regional favourite, if not germany’s most well known and most loved cake, is the Schwarzwälder kirschtorte, or simply, Black forest cake.
this light chocolate genoise interlayered with fresh whipped cream and an abundance of local cherries soaked in kirschwasser (cherry brandy) is topped with lashings of rich chocolate shavings. although a smaller state and city compared to the rest of germany, no other area in germany has as many Michelin-rated restaurants as Baden Württemberg and freiburg. there are close to 50 of the famed star rated restaurants in the state. Just walking through the beautifully lit streets at night, we’re impressed at just how busy all the restaurants are, from neighbourhood bistros and canteens to the multileveled energy-filled bierhaus. usually overshadowed by the monumental cities of frankfurt, Munich and Berlin, freiburg, being a bit hidden away in the Black forest, could easily become one of my favourite culinary cities…even just for a slice of a calorie and kirsch-laden Schwarzwälder kirschtorte! n

savoir-Faire By Harris Van A 4 a.m. pick up outside my Vancouver condo, far too early – a more sophisticated person wouldn't have stood for such an early roust, but for a complimentary press junket involving the sum total of a private black car, first class flight to Los Angeles, overnight stay at The London West Hollywood in Beverly Hills right off of Sunset Boulevard (love the street name), as well as the opportunity to mingle with a host of international guests, writers ETAL, one could hardly refuse.
Arik Lévy, Hennessy•8 Decanter Designer
The main event
a tasting of “The Legacy Cognac Hennessy•8” at something called a Vernissage (Varnishing in English); a term historically associated with the preparation for an exclusive artwork exhibition. Instead of artwork, however, the art gallery, PLEASE DO NOT ENTER, yet we did, in Downtown LA would be exhibiting the one-time limited edition, Hennessy•8 (just 250 litres bottled, one for every year of this Iconic companies heritage). Combine this carefully crafted spirit with a bonus encasing designed by young modern thinking, commercial designer extraordinaire Arik Lévy and owner of said restricted entry gallery. Working with the Maison de Hennessy was an absolute labour of love, Lévy admitted to me later in the evening, “I have worked with Hennessy on this project for so long and felt such a part of the Hennessy family that it wasn’t uncommon to think I was going to the wrong location when driving to my personal office instead of Maison Hennessy after project completion”. This was all becoming far too big a draw to worry about time, sleep and social status or lack thereof on both counts, said I. Luxury all the way, starting with flight and seat number 1A. Even while assuming what was hoped to

be the poise and air of a regular first to die in a crash, living life at its best, front of plane traveller, there was a coy inference in the cabin service directors eyes of discovery of a ruse, as she eyed the struggle with the operation of a pullout food tray like the obvious first timer I was. At this rate, how was I ever going to pull off conversation with world-renowned purveyors of century's of luxury libation and the soon-to-be unveiled Hennessy•8 Cognac? Resignation to act with the normalcy of an everyday outing, only partially thwarted by the creeping in of sleep deprivation combined with an adrenaline buzzing energy surge welling up inside me since the moment I received the phone call requesting Boulevard’s presence at the North American launch. The Legacy Hennessy•8, coined by master brewer Yann Fillioux as a precious alchemy of the eau-devie (water of life). The unique opportunity to meet Yann, Hennessy’s current master blender, holder of an impressive 50-year tenure as de Maison Hennessy’s official “Guardian of the Temple”. The opportunity to sip, not drink, from the fountain of the eight eaude-vie was turning into something akin to a quest to bathe in the aguas of the mythological Fountain of Youth (eat your heart out Juan Ponce de León).
£35,000 GBP per bottle, $50,377 usD, $63,916 CaD, that is six ounces at $2,458 per ounce ... i’ll take two!
Homage to history and values; unwavering commitment to creation; quest for innovation; freedom, passion, and originality; were all terms bantered about at the event, and when said quietly one might even get the impression of being in an old Elizabethan library rather than a penthouse suite “Varnishing” exchanging attempts at measuring up for a quest for knowledge about a Cognac steeped in centuries of tradition; carefully and lovingly produced by the Fillioux progeny. A sip for the ages was what it was. “Daily tastings in Paris consisted of just a few sips not drinks, and required spittoons, every 11 a.m. at the Paris Hennessy Chateau”, explained Renaud, stylishly attired in a blue suit and tie for traditions sake, insisting the spittoons a necessity to ensure sobriety for the rest of the day. In reality it was learned the daily gathering of experts taste “ingredients”, (sometimes 140 proof, which define the perfect blend of high quality and high regard), diligently searching for the perfect blend before the master blender Yann, and soon-to-be master blender Renaud, make their final decision on product to market. In my humble state, sitting in front of these genial statesmen, I somewhat sheepishly asked about the much-used term “eau-de-vie”. Relaying this to you now, and based on my memory of the event, Yann’s response was extremely enthusiastic.

A tasting of “The Legacy Cognac Hennessy•8” Vernissage, Los Angeles
an incarnation of Two Centuries of excellent Choices
“Eau-de-vie is the non-blended yearly production of Hennessy. Each year the master blender blends multiple euax-de-vie creating the finest liqueur possible”, said Yann, “proof of this being that Hennessy holds 40 percent of the world’s luxury Cognac global market share”. The uniqueness about the Hennessy•8 is that in his last days as master blender, Yann was to choose seven separate eau-de-vie, one to illustrate each generation of master blenders, and Renaud, himself an accomplished blender having been a member of Hennessy’s ultra distinguished tasting committee for no less than 14 years, had the honour of choosing the final eau-de-vie, thereby passing on the héritage familial. “It is an incarnation of two centuries of excellent choices,” explained Yann proudly. With my social poise now partially intact, I only hoped I could keep my wits about me at “le Vernissage” and finally tasting the Hennessy•8. Grace inevitably slipping from my wetted lips into economic non-sense when recalling the numbers; £35,000 GBP per bottle, $50,377 USD, $63,916 CAD, that is six ounces at $2,458 per ounce . . . I’ll take two! And with a, perhaps less than appropriate, slight of hand I did. It was good to know the stewards on the flight back don’t compare notes, so pulling off the First Class passenger act was found to be a little easier. Perhaps a sip of two centuries of excellent choices had rubbed off just a little. n

SHINE! OUT OF THE DARKNESS SHINE!, a fundraising extravaganza
for Mental Health and Addiction, pulsed with excitement from the moment the doors opened to let the colourful, glittering attendees into the gala event held at the iconic Commodore Ballroom. Dean Thullner’s glamorous production raised $80,000 for the Canadian Mental Health Association (BC) and Lions Gate Hospital’s HOpe Center (The HOpe Center). Over 200 volunteers came together in a show of support for community awareness, compassion, acceptance and #nostigma. Shine! continues to reflect the fundamental values established back in 2012 which began with the inaugural fundraiser “Brilliant”, again under the direction of Thullner.
The evening’s accomplishment did not transpire without tears, trials and tribulation. In the center of this fundraising success story was a he-said/he-said controversy that almost shut down this worthwhile enterprise. Thullner and his team raised over 2 million dollars over a 3 year run with his original rendering of the show. When those Foundation heads came to him in March with a new mandate to limit or remove any LGBT content so as to not offend select corporate attendees, Dean chose

to stay true to his principles and he walked. Unsure as to who would follow, he gathered his troops and soon found out that he really was the heart and soul of the production. The team; models, designers, stylists and makeup artists, rallied behind him and another star event was born. Symone Says, one of Vancouver’s premier Gender Illusionists, owned the stage as MC/ host together with Fiona Forbes. Top musical talent entertained the 900 strong high-spirited audience. Guests were treated to 13 unique runway fashion shows (including Carolyn Bruce Designs, Boo La La and Oculto Masks), drag queen performances, dance numbers and keynote speakers. Vancouver teems with different lifestyles and we truly are a city of cultural diversity. SHINE reflects, illuminates and celebrates these differences with the end goal of creating a unified community where we all can discover a common bond of acceptance. SHINE! on.
