Something they Want, Something they need
A By Lisa Manfield
New Kind of Christmas Wishlist
There’s nothing I love more at Christmas than fully stuffed stockings and a tree full of presents. I enjoy everything about gift exchanges -- from picking out the perfect items for family and friends, to wrapping them up in shimmery packaging and watching their faces light up as they open the treasures I’ve chosen with care. And I’m not going to lie, I enjoy receiving gifts just as much as I love giving them. But I do recognize that the whole process is a bit of an exercise in excess consumerism. I mean, it’s not like I need a lot of things -- nor do my family and friends. We’re all lucky enough to have the means to go out and buy nearly anything we need, anytime we need it. So this year, I’ve decided to approach gift giving a little differently. This year, all I want for Christmas is an easy way to make giving more meaningful. And I think I’ve found it…
Meaningful and Magical For some of the people on my list, it’ll be easy to give them something meaningful. For my partner, for example, anything that involves a night out without our baby will surely do the trick. For my parents, framed photos of said baby will be happily received. And for my nieces and nephew, two words: Paw Patrol. These gifts are meaningful because I know they’ll love them. But my daughter is another story. She’s just turned one and this is the first year she’ll participate in opening presents. It’s tempting to get her a big pile of gifts because I know how much she’ll love everything -- new toys, wrapping paper, empty boxes. And what parent doesn’t want their kids to have a magical Christmas? But I also want to start out on the right foot when it comes to instilling family values about giving and receiving. I want to teach my daughter that giving is more important
22
B O U L E VA R D
than receiving, and that quality is more important than quantity.
Something They Want, Something They Need That’s why I was excited when I read about a minimalist gift giving approach that limits giving to four meaningful things: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. It’s so simple to remember, and easy to fulfill. Not only does it take the stress out of paring down the wishlist, it also emphasizes the importance of appreciating quality over quantity. Books and clothes are easy; all kids need those. And because my daughter doesn’t yet want anything, I’ll pick out a couple of toys I’m sure she’ll love. When she’s older I’ll teach her more explicitly about the importance of giving, and of valuing quality over quantity. But for now, the four-gift philosophy will help me to create more meaning this Christmas. Sure, the presents under the tree won’t be quite as plentiful, but the most important gift will be the beginning of a life-long lesson in giving and gratitude. n

s autumn now falls upon us and we’re spending more time indoors – one of the best places to gather is around the fireplace. Despite the competition for attention from the TV the fireplace should retain its position as the center focal point in a room. Let your fireplace surround make a beautiful statement any time of the year with friend and family gathered around. Here are some tips for your fireplaces from small changes to bigger undertakings. A dated fireplace can be easily transformed by going over its existing surfaces, this is a cost effective way of creating an entirely different look with your existing fireplace. Painting out brass details with black barbeque paint removes the dated metal. Installing new tile right over old tile or stone is an easy facelift. A new millwork mantel and surround can be installed directly over and existing fireplace to dramatically change the size shape and style of the
24
B O U L E VA R D
old fireplace. Your choice of material weather it is wood, stone, concrete or brick should reflect the style of your home. Decorating for any holiday is your opportunity to add colours and fun seasonal items to represent the festivities. For other times of the year use restraint when adding items to the mantel, family photos and a random variety of trinkets look more cluttered than decorated. We suggest either creating symmetry with identical items on either side of the mantel or a small grouping of items that are similar in style. When choosing the mirror or art to go above the fireplace the first key is to ensure the correct scale. The item should be slightly smaller in width than the fireplace. A contemporary fireplace could have a large unframed image above it. A traditional fireplace looks great with an interesting framed piece. Finally, be as fearless as possible. Use the fireplace as the location to showcase the most beautiful materials and elements that you desire in your home. n

TruFig: The Perfect Answer
W
The balance of technology and design is a delicate one;
e, as home owners, love what technology can do for us, but making it integrate seamlessly into the design of our homes can be a challenge. Working tirelessly towards making that easier for all of us is a group of California called Dana Innovations. They’re the home to a number of types of technological innovations: their Sonance line of speakers is listed as one of the very best in the world–and for good reason! They have been responsible for most of the innovation in in-wall and in-ceiling speakers over the past two decades, and have wowed the world with the in-wall Invisible Series speaker that disappears into the space as it integrates directly with your wall. One of the most sought-after elements of this line-up however, is their TruFig line. Famous around the world, and the choice of both designers and home integrators, TruFig is used to integrate technology directly into the surface of your home. This seamless, subtle approach is something that meets the needs of both technology and design. TruFig is being demanded in more homes across Vancouver; with TruFig mounts available for iPad, light switches, plugs, 26
B O U L E VA R D
HVAC controls, and ventilation, it’s a luxurious and elegant answer to the everyday needs of your home. Typically these pieces–light switches, plugs, and so on–are seen as blemishes on your wall; TruFig transforms them unseen elements that are there when you need them. One of the most challenging parts of integrating these elements into your home is working with materials and patterns that plugs, switches, and integrated controls like iPads, stand out against. TruFig is the perfect answer, as it can match materials like wood, marble, and stone easily. TruFig is available from highend custom integrators, and can be installed in new homes, or retrofit into existing homes by qualified installers. n

ao Feng Xiang, the number one jewellery brand in China, hosted “Appreciation of Lao Feng Xiang Luxurious Jade” at its downtown Vancouver flagship store located at 1016 Alberni Street in late November. This marked Lao Feng Xiang’s debut overseas, and featured collectible luxurious jewellery, with an estimated total value of over $1 billion. Most of the pieces had never before been revealed to the public outside Mainland China. During the event, Lao Feng Xiang set up a private salon for jewellery appreciation. Gorgeous jewellery pieces were displayed in this elegant space that offered a rich Chinese ambience. In addition to showing guests the collection’s creativity and sophisticated craftsmanship, Lao Feng Xiang offered hundreds of top-quality jade, coloured gemstone and diamond accessories at special prices for its new and existing customers.

New clothing store is creating a buzz in Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley
B
agheera Boutique — a much l o v e d shopping spot in Victoria — has opened its second location in the Coulter Berry Building in iconic Fort Langley. The store, owned by couple Nataliia Bahirova and Anton Solonnikov, brings top European brands to Langley, with names such as Laurel, Luisa Cerano, Marc Cain, Wolford, Brax and Vince, while carrying local Canadian accessories, such as Suzi Roher scarves and Vancouver’s Sheereen De Roussea jewelry.
“We used to have women coming to shop here from Langley, Maple Ridge, White Rock, Chilliwack and all over Vancouver — and all of a sudden there were no options”. Ella’s of Langley used to be a popular destination for women from all over Greater Vancouver, and with its closure, the Bagheera owners felt there was a large void in the area. They are teaming up with Karlene Bullock and Delores Johns, two women who have helped customers in the Fraser Valley dress beautifully for over 30 years, most recently at Ella’s. Karlene agrees there was void that needed to be filled, saying, “We used to have women coming to to shop here from Langley, Maple Ridge, White Rock, Chilliwack and all over Vancouver — and all of a sudden there were no options”. She says she’s been flooded with email and phone calls from people who are excited that Bagheera has opened in the Fraser Valley. Bagheera aims to create a total customer experience for everyone who walks through the door.

“We make sure every women gets personalized customer service and advice, and receives the utmost attention, without any pressure. This is something that is hard to get in downtown Vancouver.” In addition to catering to high-end shoppers, Bagheera offers medium-priced brands from Europe. “We want to be the go-to place for shopping for all women in the Greater Vancouver area. Fort Langley is such a beautiful and quaint place, it offers a perfect getaway from the city.“ From casual, formal, dresses and business attire, to one-ofa-kind accessories, this is a store worth seeing in person. www.bagheeralangley.ca n

Branded Luxury Furniture ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING & UNUSUAL TRENDS
Keeping up with changing tastes By Shawn Conner
“We have a very fast cycle of bringing new pieces in, and trying new things.” Steen Skaaning, owner Inspiration Furniture
W
hen Steen Skaaning opened Inspiration in Vancouver 14 years ago, he wasn’t sure what kind of reception to expect. In Honolulu, his brother had already launched the first Inspiration furniture store. Like its Hawaiian sister, the Vancouver store was meant to cater to what Skaaning calls “active con-
36
B O U L E VA R D
do downtown living, about density and small space.” He quickly found out that the two markets were different, however. “They were selling a lot of light woods,” he said of the Honolulu store. “In Vancouver, we couldn’t give away furniture that was made out of beech or maple. That had died three years ago.”
ASTON MARTIN INTERIORS, MERCEDES BENZ STYLE AND TONINO LAMBORGHINI CASA
What Skaaning also learned was that Vancouver, even back then, was “a very contemporary city,” and that Vancouverites didn’t want to buy the kind of furniture their parents had. Hence, no teak. So instead, Inspiration has focused on contemporary design and materials, with a healthy dose of eclecticism — and a wide range of pricing. Skaaning says that some people might think — because of the store’s location close to downtown — that
Inspiration offers nothing but high-end furniture. Sure, there are plenty of big-ticket items — we’ll get to those in a second — but there are more affordable pieces too. “We have always taken a shotgun approach to price points,” Skaaning said. “Contemporary furniture can be for anybody. We definitely have luxury products, but it’s never been our goal to be the most expensive store in town.” Still, those seeking contemporary luxury furniture need look no further than the nearly 5000-square-foot store on West 6th Avenue. There, visitors will indeed find some pricey pieces —including some, they might be surprised to learn, that are emblazoned with names more familiar on the road than in a furniture store: Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Mercedes Benz. FormItalia, an Italian company, produces the pieces for Aston Martin Interiors, Mercedes Benz Style and Tonino Lamborghini Casa, as the furniture arms of the brands are officially known. Naturally, the pieces are designed to echo the aesthetic of their respective brands. Although big enough to seat three, a red-and-black-leather Lamborghini couch looks as though it came out of one of the company’s sports cars. A gun-metal grey Aston Martin desk, with one side that extends down to the floor like a ramp, would please any world-conquering James Bond villain. The Mercedes Benz Style pieces are sleek and classic, but with a contemporary edge. Branded luxury furniture is one of the most exciting and unusual trends he’s seen, said Skaaning. On a smaller scale, he said, he’s seeing more pieces that mix veneers and wood, rather than pieces that are all wood — which is “not the most effective use” of the material. Other leading trends include the use of lighter woods, like walnut and oak, as well as high-pressure laminate veneers, and even linoleum. Of all the international furniture shows he visits to research the latest trends, Skaaning is most excited by the annual event in Milan. There, he sees work by craftsman who are not only as skilled as any in the world, but who are not afraid to throw out the rule book. B O U L E VA R D
37
But, though he loves the craftsmanship and innovation of Italian furniture, he’s always searching for Scandinavian products he can bring in, too. “I’m very proud of the traditions and craftsmanship of the Danish furniture industry,” said the former Danish cabinetmaker. But he finds much of the Scandinavian product he comes across at design shows “cold and stark. You look at, say, a small cube, and it’s beautiful, but outrageously expensive for what it is, just because it has a wool felt cover.” But he prides the store for its commitment to bringing in new furniture. “We have a very fast cycle of bringing new pieces in, and trying new things,” Skaaning said. “I think that’s one thing our customers like. There’s always something new.” Currently, the store has a mix of traditionally functioning pieces (including a large section of the showroom dedicated to a collection from trusted Italian manufacturer Natuzzi) and showy, amaze-your-guests items. These include a pool table that converts to a dining table (or vice versa), and a dining table that extends, Transformers-style, into a longer table. This is done by means of a motor that can be controlled manually or remotely. The mechanism is completely visible through the glass top, making a work of art out of the gears and other metal parts.
“We’ll try different things,” Skaaning said. “Our position in this city is to try and be at the forefront. And to keep up with Vancouverites. This is not the U.S., where you can have a product in your collection for five or 10 years, and it keeps selling just because. We found out right away we need to constantly change.” And there’s still no teak. n

Pairing blue and white with wooden floors creates an oceanfront effect in the home. This living room wall is painted with Dulux Paints’ Blazer Blue.

How can you use blue? his year’s trendiest home décor colour - blue - is a light and uplifting shade. Like a blue sky or the open ocean thinly veiled by fog, this joyful blue invokes calm and harmony. However, though it is trendy, Canadians who are used to using warm, neutral colours could find it a bit challenging. So, how can you use blue in home décor? Dulux Paints’ brand manager Martin Tustin-Fuchs shared some suggestions with us. Blue is an excellent multi-complementary colour and can match with different types of décor. It may not be your first choice, but other than neutral colours that aren’t very bright, no other colour complements better than blue,” he says. “Even if you put it on just one wall, you can still feel the peace and quiet that it emanates.” Dulux Paints released a series of blues all at once this year, complementing their colour of the year: the light blue Bear Run. Other popular shades include Blazer Blue, Teton Sky and Blue Blood. What are some suitable areas to use blue? What colours does it complement most effectively? The tips below may help you boldly introduce this trendy colour into your home.
Blue is often a soothing colour, like Dulux Paints’ Teton Sky, used on the wall and ceiling here. Combined with grey-white, light grey or a yellow tan, it can create a feeling of relaxation and spa-like atmosphere. B O U L E VA R D

Pairing with white
If your style is more traditional, blue walls paired with white baseboards and trim creates a classic effect. Want to modernize a bit? Paint the walls white and the back of your bookcase a vivid blue. The bits of bright blue that peek out from behind your books will contrast the stark white walls for an exceptionally smart looking room. Love the feeling of a seaside home? Use blue and white striped patterns and natural materials such as jute and burlap in your décor. Regardless of the style, add blue accessories to complement the blue of the walls.
The ideal colour for home offices Blues can also stimulate the mind, sharpening focus and improving efficiency. In this home office, Dulux Paints’ trending colour of the year, Bear Run, is featured here on the right-hand wall.
Warming blue up
Pairing blue walls with lighter warm colours - such as sand brown, beige grey or this year’s popular golden yellow - creates a comfortable environment. If a quiet, monochromatic world is desired however, you can try pairing different shades of blue in the same space. Use separate hues for walls, baseboards and doorframes, doors or even ceilings. Remember too, wooden floors can warm up blue walls and create the feeling of an enchanting ocean-side home.
Blue can stimulate the mind, giving you more focus and improving your work efficiency, and so works great in home offices. And pairing with one or two other colours can help to achieve a balance. For example: Dulux Paints’ colour of the year Bear Run pairs well with Newborn yellow and Coral Flower orange. White office furniture maintains a brightness throughout the space.
Not a bad choice for bathrooms either
Whether dark or light, calm-inducing blue is a natural partner for the bathroom. Paired with a grey-white, light grey or yellow-tan - such as Dulux Paints’ Song Porcelain white, Silver Trophy grey or Brown Bag tan - a blue bathroom possesses a sense of relaxation and release, just like the spa. To take the effect one step further while adding a sense of height, paint the ceiling light blue to imitate the sky.
Lighten Lighten up up on on home home decor decor this this season season
For a more stable, practical feeling, contrast gentle pastels with darker shades. The living room wall here is painted with Sico’s Violet Ambiance light purple and Flanders Lake slate.
Using pastel colours to lighten the mood Quiet and relaxing living spaces are trending this season in home décor. Gentle and elegant wall colours have become everybody’s favourite. “This season’s wall colours reflected everybody’s desire for quiet and harmony. Yellowtinged whites and light pastel colours can be wall main colours, while dark grey and black is the colour of the main wall,” Sico Paint brand manager Genevieve Paiement points out. “A cocoon lifestyle trend has fully returned. People are using gentler, lighter shades to make for brighter surroundings, turning their homes into havens, shielding from the outside world.”
A surprising way to use colour
Combining two contrasting colours in an unique way can bring fun and vibrancy into any space. For example, paint one wall deep grey or slate in an otherwise pastel room, then add a black metal lamp or industrial furniture. Additionally, a few touches of bright colours give a pastel room an energetic kick. Try painting a bright colour on the back of an open bookcase or bring in brightly coloured furniture.
Playing with different paint textures
When using pastel shades, you can also pair matte and glossy finishes together for a rich and trendy effect. For example, use Sico’s Venice Skyline dusty rose in two textures on the bathroom wall to create striped or blocked patterns. Or, using the same pastel as the walls, choose a high gloss version for one of your furniture pieces. Another method is to use light floral patterned wallpaper on a feature wall, and picking a colour from the paper for the rest of the room. It is very stylish to combine matte and gloss pastel paints. The bathroom wall here is painted with Sico’s Venice Skyline matte paint while the panels, doors and corner lines are painted with glossy Zuni Landscape. B O U L E VA R D

Pairing with wooden elements Pairing soft pastels with warm wooden elements can create an excellent match and a state of zen. A room filled with wooden furniture and a wooden-textured corner line can have its walls painted with a light pastel colour. Use naturalmaterial textiles and textured elements for furniture, pillows and carpets and add fresh florals, plants and floral designs as decor. A refreshing and elegant environment filled with a natural style is thus created. Paint cabinets with a gentle pastel, such as Sico’s Alpine Morning pastel green, and combine with Sico’s Basalt iron-grey on the walls to increase the warmth, charm and sense of layers in the space.

Tips to Finding Your Style with A Design/Build Team
s the CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, I am invited to tour many of our designer and builder’s awardwinning projects. What strikes me as so exciting is all the different interior design styles emerging in Metro Vancouver. Talking with GVHBA members, some tips shared with me include: • Be comfortable with the style of the designer you chose. Check out their work, and make sure your tastes align.

• Work with a builder who has experience in the style of home you want to build. Design/ build teams are a good bet, as an existing working relationship between designer and builder can save your project time and money. • Take time to make the right decisions that will form the backdrop of your home. Flooring, windows, lighting, wall covering and storage, all will impact the end design. • Be sure to bring samples into the home to view in the light throughout various times of the
h om e
day. Colour will vary greatly depending on the lighting; both natural, and fixtures selected. • Include your builder in the design process. Experienced, professional builders will bring building solutions to your design challenges. • Rather than rushing out to fill your new home with the latest trends, buy one or two quality pieces a year. Focus on the key pieces, ie. bed for the bedroom, couch for the living area, table for the eating area. Anchor pieces for each room are essential to determine space and set the style you are looking to achieve. You can fill in the rest as you get used to your new home. • Don’t be afraid to mix and match. Chances are you will have a few favourite pieces to bring to your new home. Be sure to note these key pieces when talking with you design/build team, as they can be built into the space as your home is designed.
• When looking around the homes of your family and friends, if you start to see similar designs, chances are you are looking at a trend. Unique pieces will add instant history add a personal flare to your home. A professional design build team can work with you to find your style, and build a home to last a lifetime. You can always call for a great opportunity to meet and check out the work of many of the GVHBA’s design/build teams. n

ith so many cultures converging along the length of Vancouver’s narrow Main Street, it’s no wonder it’s been named one of North America’s top 15 “coolest streets.” Every block has its own features, from artistic displays and antiques to street shopping, specialty foods, cafes and bars. No matter what you want to experience in Vancouver, this place can certainly satisfy you!

ONE of North Amercia's
“Co o l est ” STREETS
It’s one of the origins of Vancouver and a key northsouth street. Main Street’s north end starts at the Port of Vancouver container terminal, close to Gastown, then passes through Chinatown, Pacific Central railway station and Science World before arriving in Mount Pleasant. It continues south past Nat Bailey Stadium and Queen Elizabeth Park, then into Punjabi Market, one of the main centres of Vancouver’s South Asian community. Further south on Main Street, commercial buildings begin to appear again and continue all the way to the intersection of Southeast Marine Drive. And from that intersection to the shores of the Fraser River, Main Street is bordered on both sides by industrial lands. Surrounded by so many iconic buildings, its importance is apparent. With so many cultures converging along long and narrow Main Street, it is definitely one of North America’s 15 “coolest streets”. Every block has its own features. Whether it’d be artistic displays, antiques, street-shopping or specialty foods, cafes and bars, everything you’d want to experience in Vancouver, this place can certainly satisfy you! Let’s begin with Chinatown. Most familiar to the ethnic Chinese, Chinatown was once the city’s centre where both Vancouver’s city hall and the central library were established. Add in the orientalflavoured Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and the blessings of Chinatown, and it’s not outrageous to say this was the area ethnic Chinese were most familiar with in all of Greater Vancouver. However, as municipal institutions and retailers moved away in later years, cities like Richmond and Burnaby arose as the new communities for ethnic Chinese. As a result, the living standards of Chinatown and its surrounding areas went downhill to the point where Chinatown, for a time, became synonymous with poverty. But after relentless hard work and improvement efforts, specialty cafes and restaurants have moved back into the area surrounding Main

in particular gives off a sense of harmony between the old and the new
Street in Chinatown, including Sai Woo, Catfe, Ovaltine Café, Matchstick Coffee Roasters, Crackle Crème and Everything Café. Whether it’s vintage, trendy, or a fusion between east and west, variety abounds. The fragrance of coffee fills the streets, making this spot a must-visit travel destination for young hipsters. South of Chinatown, the area surrounding Terminal to Mount Pleasant is a gathering place for culture and art. Mount Pleasant in particular gives off a sense of harmony between the old and the new with its abundance of historical city architecture complemented by new residential projects. Creative workspaces have been well established here, including CSA Space, VIVO Media Arts Centre and Western Front Society. Graffiti and other types of street art are visible everywhere, with one of the most famous being the poodle sculpture at the intersection of 18th
and Main. Jointly funded by the federal government, Translink and the municipality of Vancouver, this poodle even has its own Twitter account where it shares its daily moods with netizens. Chris Vollan, vice president of Rize Alliance, didn’t expect to fall in love with Main Street. But he got to know the community through his company’s two residential projects in the area, and even now will frequently embark on an “adventure” down the Street. “On a stroll here, you can really see a miniature reflection of Vancouver,” he says. As well as being home to a widely ranging demographic, Main Street’s pedestrian-friendly and novel shops attract residents and visitors alike. “Before walking on Main Street, I’d never thought I’d buy sausages from a small alley, or that I’d buy coffee from a second floor shop, or that I couldn’t wait to go into a Filipino restaurant

for a meal,” says Vollan. “In my previous life, those things had never happened before.” Vollan also points out that because the community is relatively safe and has a complete transportation infrastructure, residents who have moved there “basically won’t be able to move away.” Using one of Rize’s residential projects, Onque, as an example, 60 per cent of the residents originally lived within ten blocks of the project itself before moving in, and 94 per cent are from the Greater Vancouver area. It’s evident that the advantages of Main Street living have long been evident amongst the public. And of course, we have to mention the boutique shops found everywhere on Main Street. As previously noted, whatever it is that you want, this place can satisfy you. In addition to well-known fashion brands, there are also niche brands and ethnic clothing stores here for your shopping pleasure. For those who love sports, you can find sailing products, skateboard shops, outdoor equipment shops and bike shops. For those who prefer a journey through culture, there are numerous record shops, galleries and bookstores, offering a full day of exploration into the arts.
52

For ladies who love crafts, there are many Japanese-style hobby shops, design supply shops and independent design production displays here. The fabled antique street between 26th and 29th streets is a must-visit for prime treasure hunting, especially for anyone looking to bring home a special find to dress up their home. And near 48th Street is a concentration of specialty fashion and accessory stores, and restaurants from India, offering culinary treats, inexpensive fabrics, clothes and Indian-style jewelry. The shops along Main Street have much the same personality as the street itself; doors are narrow, interiors are crowded and the variety is wide. Neighbouring stores may have entirely different styles, and yet it still feels so normal for them to be next to each other. If you have the time, come and take a look for yourself. Experience the small stories and details at every corner. And perhaps, you might stay and live here too. n

early two decades into her broadcasting career, Fiona Forbes estimates she’s interviewed no less than 30,000 people. But there’s still one figure the Vancouver-born television host, producer and all-around lady boss is dying to score some face time with. “Oprah,” Forbes confesses without hesitation. She flutters her eyes closed as a makeup artist applies a light dusting of shadow across her lids. “Can you imagine? I’d be back to breathing in a paper bag.”
While the mere thought of meeting Ms. Winfrey —arguably one of the most prolific media personalities of our generation and the undisputed queen of luxurious, over-the-top giveaways — is enough to send us regular folk into fits of hyperventilation, it’s a tad more difficult to believe that the well-equipped Forbes would require a calm-down technique of her own. After all, the long-time Shaw TV host has bantered with the likes of Canadian hockey legend Bobby Orr, actress Elizabeth Hurley and former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Saul Hudson, better known by his stage name, Slash. However, as the veteran interviewer has previously detailed, public speaking wasn’t always her forte. Sitting in a small beauty studio in downtown Vancouver as her makeup and hair is primped for the Boulevard Vancouver cover shoot, and her tiny Yorkshire Terrier, Chewie, waits patiently on her lap, Forbes recalls her years at the University of British Columbia where she studied history and political science. 58

“I was so painfully shy that I used to have panic attacks when I was giving presentations,” she remembers. “If I’d had to speak to you guys then, I’d probably have to step outside ’cause I’d be freaking out.” Forbes originally planned to follow in her father’s footsteps by becoming a lawyer and, at his suggestion, enrolled in a broadcasting course during her final year of post secondary school that would hopefully help conquer her fear of talking in large groups. She loved the first class so much that she decided to audition for an onscreen job the following day: a task that her pops had dared her to tackle. Fast-forward one week and Forbes was hosting a one-hour live television program — her first-ever broadcasting gig — on Rogers TV.

Today, Forbes is host and producer of Shaw TV’s Where You Live, a 30-minute program that takes her into the vibrant boroughs that make up BC’s Lower Mainland, and the recently launched Up Front, which sees the experienced telecaster grilling movers, shakers and key decision-makers from across Metro Vancouver on topics such as civic affairs, arts and culture, and newsworthy trends. Up until this past summer, Forbes was also the face of Fiona Forbes, an entertainment talk show that — surprise, surprise — featured interviews with notable names like Bif Naked and Peter Mansbridge. However, the proud Vancouverite is perhaps best known for her role alongside cohost Michael Eckford on Shaw TV’s now defunct gabfest, Urban Rush, which was rebranded as the nationally syndicated The Rush in 2012. “I love the talk-show format,” Forbes explains. “That’s definitely something that’s a running theme in everything I’ve done with Shaw TV. I think it’s the best way to introduce people in the community to the community in a way that reflects the place that we’re in.”

“It’s important to appreciate people when they’re starting out and, when I find out about them, it gets me excited.”
The Kerrisdale-raised broadcaster maintains a relationship with Eckford to this day. In fact, the ex–radio personality, who Forbes affectionately dubs “the brother I never wanted,” is slated to host an upcoming web series produced by Forbes and The Real Housewives of Vancouver star Mary Zilba under the duo’s pet project, Ladypants Productions. The program’s name? Marijuana Minute. “Mary and I have been friends for a million years,” shares Forbes. “And, like a lot of people, we think we have incredible ideas when we have a couple of glasses of wine.” Marijuana Minute, a collection of bite-size infotainment clips that outline, in Forbes’s words, “everything you wanted to know about marijua-

na but were too paranoid to ask,” is the second series from Ladypants to be picked up by US executives. The first, an online marijuana cooking show titled Baked: Cooking with Mary Jean, also involves BC bud, though Forbes reveals that her and Zilba have a more serious documentary and reality TV program — both free of pot — in the works. “We don’t just do marijuana shows,” she stresses with a laugh. Besides, the affable producer has other interests, too: namely, her hometown of Vancouver, which she strives to support on- and off-screen. In addition to sharing the stories of gifted and fascinating Vancouverites — including Michael Bublé, who first appeared on Urban Rush at the ripe

She’s also a champion of local, up-and-coming designers. Her favourites currently include Rimpy Sahota and Pyrrha, the latter of which is responsible for the talisman hanging loosely from her neck. The pendant catches the vanity’s light as Forbes’s hair is carefully curled into voluminous tendrils. “I think it’s like anything when it comes to Vancouver: you never appreciate it until it makes it big somewhere else,” she says of the city’s talent. “But I think it’s important to appreciate people when they’re starting out and, when I find out about them, it gets me excited.” Asked what her next move will be, Forbes doesn’t look too far ahead. She mentions David Letterman as another name on her dream interview list as well as a desire to eventually be lying somewhere sandy and warm. Following the cover shoot, however, she’ll likely take Chewie for a stroll on Kitsilano beach, where she regularly goes to take five from her busy schedule. Then it’s back to showcasing the things that make Vancouver beautiful and brainstorming cockamamie web series to develop. “Being able to do what I do is pretty silly in the grand scheme of things,” she says. “I’m not saving lives; I get to meet really cool people and tell their stories all the time. No matter what format it’s in … it’s telling people’s stories. And that’s what really drives me.” n

Day 1: Intimate encounter with Mulsanne
lowing in gentle champagne colour, a powerful and proud physique, its lines are solid yet smooth. Quietly it sat, but the empowering presence was impossible to ignore. As if I was about to meet someone special, I got in the car with a sense of excitement and nervousness. I was a bit anxious driving such a big luxurious car in a new city. However, this disappeared after a few minutes as the navigator’s clear directions minimized my fear of getting lost. This model was surprisingly comfortable and its easy handling further helped me relax. As I sped along the highway, the San Francisco scenery flashed by quickly, I felt like I was driving a land cruiser, stable and smooth. Even though I needed to step on the gas pedal a bit hard at first, it accelerated very quickly, leaving other cars behind. The steering wheel was not as heavy as I thought, and rotated smoothly as I turned. When I made a slight turn, I felt the power coming from the rear wheel; the car navigated through the curvy road with light and sleek handling. Now relaxed, I had a chance to fully study the

interior of the car — delicate genuine leather and nicely crafted solid wood décor, steering wheel and seats wrapped in premium leather. The scent of the leather filled the air, the sleek and modern solid wood décor complemented the glamourous yet not overly clumsy, strategic and rigorous style. During a gala dinner that night, I chatted with Mike Sayer, PR manager of Bentley from England, and learned that the car’s luxurious quality resulted from the developers’ long period of uncompromising attention to details and craftsmanship. Mulsanne is entirely handmade in a factory in Crewe, the United Kingdom, and it takes 400 hours just to complete one single car. This is about 200 times longer than it takes to make an ordinary car. The body is made with steel and aluminum with a total of 5,800 solder joints, and takes 100 hours to complete. The polished surface requires 120 procedures, the final polishing alone takes 12 hours. The leather interior consists of 480 leather pieces, all assembled by hand, which takes 150 hours; 40 pieces of wood veneer each take 17 procedures to finish. This 140-plus kilometres, two-hour journey was a great experience, and in the twinkling of an eye, I arrived at the Solage Calistoga Resort in Calistoga, Napa Valley. I was a bit reluctant to get out of the car.

Day 2: Experience Flying Spur V8 S, hot air balloon and Mulsanne Speed T Morning call at 4 a.m. … early, because I was going flying in a hot air balloon. Excited, yes, but the fact that I didn’t have enough sleep made me dizzy. So for safety sake, I went to the backseat of the Flying Spur V8 S in Extreme Silver. The backseat was very comfortable and roomy, with hand-crafted soft seats, a sleep-mode adjustable aircraft pillow and foot step. Sinking into the heated seat, I planned to catch up with a small nap, but at the same time, I was curious about what’s inside the car. The back of the front seat features a 10-inch LED screen, which connects to Wi-Fi allowing you to work, go online, play games, watch movies or listen to music. Speaking of music, the flagship Naim™ for the Bentley premium stereo system includes 11 custom equalizer speakers and perfect surround sound inside the car. However, I didn’t want to be disturbed at this moment, so I gave up on trying this function. A wine cabinet sat between the two backseats. Opening the matte glass cover, I found ta LED light and champagne glass complementing each other. Although it had the capacity for two bottles of champagne, there was none in the wine fridge; otherwise, I wouldn’t have minded a small glass.

We arrived at the hot air balloon destination waiting and climbed into the basket underneath the balloon. The balloon elevated slowly — vineyard, houses, gardens, all lying quietly under our feet. There was a big swimming pool in one of the gardens, and a dog looked up at the balloon, barking and running around the pool. As the other two colourful balloons drifted away from us, an impressive blue Mulsanne Speed drove towards the place where the balloon would land. It was simply stunning. Everything seemed picturesque and surreal. In the afternoon, I decided to test drive this blue Mulsanne Speed, which boasted a newly improved 6.75L twin-turbocharged V8 with cam phasing. Taking only 4.9 seconds to roar from 0 to 100 km/h, it has a maximum speed of 305 km/h, and can be called the fastest luxurious sedan in the world. The test route included crossing the vineyards and curvy little roads between the mountains, which didn’t allow me to try superfast speed, but how could I not test drive it a couple times? Switching the driving mode from comfort to sport, the speed increased in no time with a slight step on the pedal — and without the abrupt feeling of your back being pushed. After all, it is a delicate, stable and powerful car.

Day 3: Driving a Flying Spur V8 S In the movie 2012, a Russian tycoon drove a Bentley, racing on the snowy mountains of the Himalaya; and now I was driving a deep violet 2016 new model Flying Spur V8 S on the way to the airport in Napa. Time was tight and I would have missed the plane if I didn’t step hard on the gas pedal. The day before, I only sat in the backseat, but this time I got to drive it and experience its ride quality. The car was equipped with a calibrated 4.0-litre V8 S twin-turbocharged engine. With upgraded power and torque, it enabled better sense of movement, accelerated more quickly than the previous model, and its modern, smart appearance was a better match for its sporty performance. The engine roared when the car started, as if to announce its strong momentum, and its steering was more lightweight and sensitive — more dynamic in handling. Its top speed reached a new high at 306 km/h. Even though I was in a hurry, I dared not try its maximum speed. My date with Bentley officially ended when I dropped off the car at the airport. Looking back at the past few days, I realized I’d completely changed my perception about Bentley. Under its charm and luxurious image, it has an enormously strong and sporty heart. n 76

I brought a wealth of truest love, The most that I could proffer, Because, forsooth, of stocks or bonds I had not one to offer. When Cupid offered Dora’s heart, I bid my whole heart’s love, A love that reached from sea to sea And to the sky above; And When Sir Cupid called for more, I bid my hands and life, That should be hers for servitude If she became my wife. f g h

"As a jewellery designer, I always challenge myself. Inspired by the gorgeous magnolia blossoms every Spring in Vancouver, I took the nature concept to the next level and devised an original concept that focused on the magnificent gems, creating one single heirloom design that will showcase both gems.” Andrei Jiliaev on his winning design, “The Family Tree Ring”.
Top Honours 2nd Year in a Row from“Canadian Jeweller Magazine”
L
ocal Vancouver jeweller, Andrei Jiliaev was honoured with a Prestigious Award of Excellence in this Canadian Jewellery Competition held on October 28th, 2016 with the. This prestigious recognition from Canada’s longest running trade publication, Canadian Jeweller magazine, comes on the heels of the company’s 2015 accolades in which 7 of the Jiliaev designs garnered awards. This year, Andrei’s “Family Tree” ring was awarded top honours in the Canadian Diamond category during the exclusive Great Jewellery Heist event at the Ritz-Carlton in Toronto. Comprised of 3 parts, the one-of-a-kind ring is steeped in the traditional practice of giving rings as symbols of commitment; its design representing the Engagement, Mother, and Child rings. The wedding band is a tree branch, which shapes into a leaf design: the engagement. The leaf in turn gently wraps around the flower set with the main stone to represent the mother. A second branch with blossoms wraps
around the center stone to represent an anniversary or child. The stones themselves a wonder of design: cut from one rough Canadian diamond to create Mother and Child. View this award-winning piece, among others on display at Jiliaev Jewellery, 1250 Hornby St., Vancouver, until March 2017. A testament to nature, it pushes the limits of jewellery design with breathtaking ingenuity that is synonymous with the Jiliaev name. Andrei is third generation to the Jiliaev Jewellery tradition; a story of passion and a love affair with design and craftsmanship that began with his grandfather in 1954. Each exquisitely designed, custom piece, from consult and conception to final, sparkling result is meant to enhance the wearer’s life and be an heirloom passed down for generations. Andrei’s impressive list of clients includes heads of state, celebrities, and most recently the Prince of Saudi Arabia. www.jiliaevjewellery.com The 2016 Awards of Excellence celebrate the very best in Canadian jewellery design, retailing, product development and watch brand innovation.
“Canadian Jeweller” partnered the 6th Annual Great Jewellery Heist in support of Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, part of Sinai Health System, where the winners were announced. Held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on October 28th in Toronto, and hosting 450 of some of the most influential Canadian business-women in finance, fashion, marketing and retail in front of The Great Jewellery Heist’s exclusive and captive audience, who were gifted a special high-quality brochure featuring this year’s 16 finalist’s bio and design philosophy. n

NOT EVERYTHING IS BLACK OR WHITE Gone are the days of politically correct politeness

you look at this picture? You would have met this interesting foursome for yourself if you attended “Scandal”, a titillating soiree presented by Terminal City Club. “Not Everything is Black or White” was the suggested theme for the evening. It was remarkably appropriate considering the current political unease. The US election contributed to an uncomfortable division of sides which caused many who usually remain silent to loudly voice what they believe in (or have been convinced to believe in). Points of view were shaken by fear, and with incredulity, we witnessed an outpouring of opinions expressed with an apparent lack of decorum or sensitivity. Gone are the days of politically correct politeness, the consideration of another’s input and with that, a new sense of false bravado is born. We now are subjected to the endless flood of uncensored personal versions of “say it like
