When did we say yes to beauty being discarded deleted and demeaned? Where is the agreement that beauty is optional – Not urgent for us to thrive? Since when have we learned the price of everything yet know the value of nothing? How could we have missed that beauty is a strength not a substance that makes its way through the cracks to come after our senses in full force to push us forward? Because we, we have not signed up. Avoiding HAlloween’s Horrors By Lisa Manfield
I
’m a little worried about this upcoming Halloween season. As Halloween approaches, my toddler has developed a heightened sense of fear. Fear of injury, fear of the unknown, fear of loss. Normal everyday things have become fearsome to her, provoking tears: the rumble of a too-loud car engine, the rattle of the blender, TV shows where characters get lost or injured. Heck, anytime anybody cries, she gets upset too. And now we have to contend with witches, ghosts and goblins as well. We’ve been reading books about all the fun things that take place on Halloween — costumes, and pumpkins and candy, oh my! But how do I prepare her for the inevitable ghosts, goblins and ghouls that will show up at our doorstep, plus all the scary characters in every store between now and the end of October? How do I explain that they’re not real when I myself flinch at the thought of hauntings, horror movies and strange noises at night? I’ve always been sensitive to scary things, and I see the same tendencies in my daughter. But I also think it goes beyond genetics. We live in a culture that has taken death and the afterlife, and turned them into something to fear: horror movies, haunted houses, grisly Halloween costumes and displays, not to mention the endless stream of shows about vampires and zombies. And perhaps that’s why it’s so scary to kids and adults alike. We’ve removed the concept of death from everyday life, and turned it into something to fear. Something that will come for us, haunt us and torture us. What ever happened to normal death? That life event that happens every single day around the world under the most ordinary of circumstances. It’s rarely represented in the media, and is certainly not going to be discussed on a ghoulish holiday like Halloween.
A few years ago I attended a Day of the Dead party, named for the Mexican holiday that takes place a couple of days after Halloween. It was actually little more than a late Halloween party, and the timing of the Mexican holiday made for a good excuse to keep the festivities going. But despite the Halloween-like presence of costumes, treats and, yes, references to death, the similarities between the two festive occasions ended there. Mexico’s Day of the Dead is a time to remember and celebrate loved ones who have passed into the afterlife. It’s a celebration that has recently gained some popularity in North America, with Day of the Dead parties being held as an alternative to Halloween parties. The traditional Day of the Dead costumes — fancy female and male skeletons outfitted with traditional Mexican clothing and adornments — are anything but scary, mixing traditional culture with the opportunity to have a little fun while honouring the deceased. It seems like a much more humane way to bring death back to life, so to speak. As for this year, I’ll be doing my best to keep the ghosts and goblins at bay during Halloween season. While it’s fun to be scared every once in awhile, I’ll be shielding my daughter until she’s old enough to understand that death is not equated with things that go bump in the night. n

MIDO SwISS watcheS

inding along the border of France and Switzerland, north of the Western Alps, are the magnificent Swiss Jura Mountains. The rustic sub-alpine range has been appropriately dubbed ‘Watch Valley – the Land of Precision’ and is a place where history and tradition collide with innovation. For hundreds of years the Swiss have refined the art of watchmaking in the Jura Mountains, a cultural region so rich in beauty that one paradoxically, loses track of time. Rooted along the horological pilgrimaged of Watch Valley since it’s conception in 1918, is MIDO Swiss Watches. The brand is internationally renowned as a pioneer in technologically advanced watchmaking, and remains committed to their traditional methodology and values, “I’m fully convinced that the success of Swiss watchmaking is linked to consistency and continuity. MIDO will always conserve this heritage and continue to produce watches in the same spirit,” expresses MIDO President, Franz Linder. Mr. Linder has spent 22-years of his career dedicated to the MIDO brand. He is sincere about MIDO’s promise to produce original, high-quality, durable watches with timeless designs. “I was lucky that I could contribute to the growth and shaping of the brand, and making the DNA clearer today than it was when I started,” says Mr. Linder.

MIDO boasts six major collections, each with unique DNA. An exceptionally honest brand, each watch produced by MIDO is assembled and tested in the Swiss Jura Mountains, and fulfills the criteria of the Swissmade watch laws. “One of our brand ambitions is to innovate our watches. We offer excellent value at a very attractive price. MIDO has the best technology – movements, power reserves up to eighty hours, silicon balance-springs, and standards – you cannot find anywhere else in this price category,” Mr. Linder explains. MIDO launched the Multifort line with its revolutionary technology in 1934, marking the beginning of the brand’s worldwide expansion. The Multifort was the first anti-magnetic, self-winding water and shock-resistant watch. “Our traditional collections are linked to architecture, which reflect the design codes and positions of the respective lines. Multifort is linked to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was built in the same era as the Multifort was created. On one side, the bridge is very aesthetical and nice looking, but
of course, it’s also very robust, made of steel, solid – really in line with the DNA of our Multifort,” Mr. Linder describes. MIDO has drawn on design inspiration from other famed architecture including London’s Royal Albert Hall reflected in the sophisticated curvature of the Belluna line, and the All Dial with a blueprint and overtones emulating the Roman Coliseum. “Our linkage to architecture is based on shared values: innovation, quality, functionality and timelessness – I think that is the symbol of good architecture and those are the values we have,” Mr. Linder expresses.
in Multifort. There is something for everyone,” Mr. Linder concludes. With 100-years cultivating their values and honouring their traditions, MIDO offers consumers unprecedented Swiss-made watches. The brand has fostered global relationships, paying homage to cultures through their architecture, solidifying MIDO’s identity as a multicultural brand. While undeniably of Swiss decent, MIDO is being propelled forward into a new era as the world’s timekeeper, celebrating diversity through exquisite design. n
MIDO has continued on the next leg of its impressive international journey with the highly anticipated expansion of the brand in Canada. The diversity of MIDO’s product lines aligns exceedingly well with this demographically diverse nation. “Buying a watch is so personal it needs to fit your personality. Part of the attractiveness of MIDO is that we offer products with a classic look like Baroncelli, we have contemporary in Ocean Star, we have retro elements Franz Linder, MIDO President B O U L E VA R D

Elegance & Luxury in a London Home By Kelly Bai Photography / Mel Yates www.melyates.com

ituated in southwest London, this mansion exemplifies a complete understanding between the designer and the homeowner. The designer, Kelly Hoppen, is world renowned and possesses over 40 years of design experience. She has previously worked on a number of different projects for the homeowner, thus is well aware of his needs and preferences.
Kelly's design exudes luxury, featuring neutral tones and clean lines. The objective in designing this mansion’s was to use Kelly's style to create a classic yet colourful luxury world. B O U L E VA R D

This four-storey, four-bedroom mansion features a master bedroom suite, three bathrooms, a cinema room, a gym and a roof terrace. Upon entering, a fine and elegant world awaits. A meandering iron staircase leads upwards to explore the unknown world, while a crystal chandelier — hanging over the side of the stairs like a waterfall — adds to its overall charm. Stepping into the bedrooms, you are immediately attracted to their soft, elegant and noble nature. Splashes of colour are found inadvertently blended into the colours and fabric of the furniture, artwork and decorative cushions, or tucked away like hidden gems in kitchen cabinets.

Inside the living room, two couches and several armchairs, set in front of the stone fireplace, provide a comfortable and intimate meeting space. The furniture’s colours and the owner’s artwork seem to have reached a common understanding, both emotional and relaxed. The dazzling white chandelier, with its unique shape, catches your attention while quietly expressing the elegance of luxury. Along the wall is a set of subtle white cabinets that open up to an unexpected bright yellow color, adding life and energy. B O U L E VA R D

The dining room continues in this style with the main focus being the chandeliers. Shaped like water droplets above the dining table and the red shelves on the wall, they provide an exquisite yet refreshing feeling. The kitchen is clean and simple with cabinets, sink, counter and stove lined up along one side of the wall, and a casual dining area set up on the other side, exposing a centre island. The custom-made dining tabletop and kitchen counter are of the same patterned marble. Opposite the armchairs on one side of the table sits a custom-made bench, fixed along the wall. The dull red checkered pattern matches the shelves in the dining room, revealing a more casual, relaxed style. 34

In the master bedroom, the sloping rooftop adds character to the room and a sunroof brings in plenty of light. It offers a generous sleeping area, and comfortably accommodates a cosy lounge area — with a double sofa and two armchairs surrounding a coffee table topped with sheep skin. Floor lamps on both sides of the sofa match the decorative branches on the mirror behind the sofa and add life to the room. The other three bedrooms are elegantly decorated, each with its own characteristics and colour tones that add novelty and vitality. Photographs on the walls and Michael Durand Borome glass penguin sculptures evoke a vivid and interesting picture of the wild.

Kelly Hoppen Kelly, being one of the world’s most famous designers, has more than 40 years of experience. Her passion for design began at a young age. From her first project at 16 years old designing a kitchen for a family friend, she has earned numerous awards, attracted extensive media coverage and generated a steady stream of business. Kelly’s world-famous style uses an ingenious mix of elements from the East and the West. Her classic style is found in homes, private yachts and private airplanes for clients around the world. Currently, her projects are more commercial, including hotels, bars, restaurants, offices and residential towers. In recent years, Kelly’s career has broadened into the field of television. She was a judge for a BBC 2 program, The Great Interior Design Challenge, which aired early in 2017. In addition, she has published 10 home design books and in 2014 she opened an online store at kellyhoppen.com, selling household items she has designed. Kelly has received numerous awards over the years, but her proudest accolade came in 2009 when she was made an MBE for her services in interior design. www.kellyhoppeninteriors.com

project an edgy outlook on a Vancouver classic: The Gables Estate. The Gables Estate was built in 1929 for the President of B.C Electric, W.G Murrin, and his family. Throughout its 88-year history, the estate has only had three owners; falling into slight disrepair, this stately 10,595 square foot Tudor mansion in Vancouver’s Southland’s neighbourhood was meticulously restored; incorporating a beautiful blend of rich history with modern sophistication. The homeowner and MGC agreed that the home should be restored to its original grandeur, paying homage to the Pacific Northwest, and demonstrating the value in restoring iconic Vancouver homes rather than demolishing them.
Local artists were hired to repair the molding and cornices, keeping the integrity of the original molding and hardwood flooring. Due to the age of the home, the plumbing, electrical, and heating required updating. Noting the environmental importance of having an energy efficient home, Fortis BC suggests using Renewable Natural Gas, which lowers your footprint without compromising comfort. MGC added radiant flooring heat throughout the main floor to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Equipped with state of the art sound, lighting, and security technology compatible with smartphones, The Gables is a neoclassic revival with touches of modern elegance coming together to form this timeless beauty. MGC advocates that the best thing about a heritage home is that, “you can experience the architectural intent of the home before the renovations start.” It’s a unique process which allows the homeowner to blend the intent of the home with their desired needs. “Everyone looks at the sports cars, but it is the collectibles that stand out in people’s memories.” says Steven Marino, a Project Manager at MGC. Inevitably, there are fewer and fewer over time. A heritage home will always be a classic, and anything installed in a new home can be added to an existing structure. The Gables is a case study on how old and new can coexist effortlessly. The Ovation Awards are dedicated to acknowledging quality and excellence in our industry. n thinking about Richmond, the first things that come to mind are great weather and an abundance of delicious Chinese food options.
And until my visit to the 2 River Green community by Aspac Developments, the amiable, friendly city atmosphere seemed to have little to do with high-end luxury. But this hidden green community along the Fraser River features beautiful scenery and, as its neighbouring facilities continue to build, it’s bound to become a legendary work. B O U L E VA R D
45
My expectations for 2 River Green grows as the River Green project completes and becomes fully occupied. I have been to the presentation centre on Hollybridge Street many times for various functions. Occasionally, I would visit the nearby gym and shops, but this is the first time I check out the 2 River Green project in detail. Once in the community, the fresh air blows gently on my face and the mist, after the rain, rises beautifully amid the spectacular natural scenery. 2 River Green features a signature water garden, five-star amenities and a highly advanced home automation system.

Inside the presentation centre, which showcases the homes, one finds nine-foot high ceilings, four layers of soundproof glass, top-notch Italian Cesar kitchen cabinets and high-end German Miele home appliances — each reflective of Aspac’s legendary excellence. Aspac also incorporates Bang & Olufsen’s smart intelligent home equipment into the units. By combining modern technology with a beautiful aesthetic, a centralized home automation system ensures a relaxed and carefree home life. Creating a model luxury community, Aspac values homeowners’ every demand, and in addition
to achieving excellence in its structure, all the details aim to be people-oriented. Centralized air conditioning ensures the home is well ventilated with a comfortable room temperature; a private shuttle bus gives direct access to an urban transport hub. Five-star private amenities include a fully equipped 25-metre pool, fitness centre, music room and banquet hall. Underground parking is monitored 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of its residences. Moreover, the Aspac Club gives its homeowners exceptional benefits, services and privileges, allowing them to make purchases such as cars and ships in the comfort of their homes.

eave the hustle and bustle of Kitsilano’s 4th Avenue behind and slip into the serenity of the Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic. After 15 years in Kerrisdale, the professional team now offers services in a beautifully natural and calming clinic on the corner of West 4th and Yew. With the aim to provide services that complement Vancouver’s vibrant West Coast lifestyle, Dr. Gidon Frame and his wife Nadine succeed daily with the use of cosmetic injections, laser treatments, and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. "My husband and I both agreed that a move to Kitsilano would enhance the quality of care that we provide to our patients. We wanted to offer flexibility in terms of types of treatments available and a larger variety of products, 7 days a week" says co-founder Nadine Frame. She is very clear when explaining the philosophy that has kept the clinic successful for so long. By offering top-of-the-line private and preventative medicine, the Frame’s, work with all patients to develop long-term relationships in their quest to reverse the aging process.
52
B O U L E VA R D
Originally from South Africa, the couple and their children arrived on the beautiful West Coast 24 years ago. Dr. Gidon Frame has always had a clear mission - to manage and reverse total body and brain aging while optimizing facial rejuvenation. After 14 years of performing treatments, Dr. Frame is recognized as an expert and teacher of balanced aesthetic rejuvenation. A crucial step in understanding the company’s philosophy is accepting the belief that we all can make small changes in our lives to optimize brain, body and cosmetic functioning. This is important in appreciating the journey that the Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic will take you on. This is not a clinic where price-shoppers and quick-fix addicts frequent. Far from it. Patients are invited to create a long-term plan for keeping the inevitable signs of aging at bay by utilizing customized plans developed in conjunction with highly-trained consultants and clinicians. No one will argue that the area we are most concerned with is our face. It projects who we are to the world and with the aim to gradually adjust our

visage to return to its natural contours and to regain its youthful effect, the Frames systematically adjust the aging process with customized procedures. Patients are not hurried to do more than what the face is able to accommodate subtly and comfortably. “Our treatments are personalized to our patients. Our goal is for our patients to benefit from our years of experience. We attempt to formulate the best treatment that will address the patient's concern and keep their secrets. It is a truly private issue when the look or impression is a mismatch to our youthful feelings.

53
We spend a decent amount time planning and assessing so that all patients know the goal, the dream, and the budget.” Nadine agrees that the fall is a perfect time to begin treatment at the clinic, especially for those perhaps attending a destination wedding or preparing for wintering in sunnier climates, and offers an overview of the areas to target to achieve your goals. Hitting international hotspots over the holidays allows for the freedom to enjoy lighter and looser clothing while soaking up the sun, dining, or relaxing harbourside on the deck. For those uncomfortable with sharing their facial wrinkles and sagging necks with travel mates (and ever present-camera’s), last year’s colourful Hermès scarf and wide-brimmed hat combination will continue to camouflage these areas of high concern but why be bundled up when there are solutions offered and available? Laser, IPL, Botox, dermal fillers, Thermage, peels, and other skin care treatments can reduce face and neck wrinkles and lines and improve skin colour without the risks associated with surgery.
54
B O U L E VA R D
Women’s décolletage and men’s chests also suffer the same effects of aging as the face and neck. Chest skin may sag, be mottled with sun spots, or may even have surgical scars, but there are skin treatments that can dramatically improve the appearance of this area with treatment options such as Fraxel laser, Thermage, microdermabrasion, skin peels, and more. The Fraxel laser is also the treatment of choice when scarring from accidents, surgery (breast augmentation or reduction, Cesarean section, tummy tucks) or acne causes you to be uncomfortable in a social situation, especially when the scarring is visible. When strolling along the white beaches of Rio de Janeiro the last thing you want to be worrying about is your underarms. For so many, this area is a source of embarrassment and frustration. Whether suffering from profuse underarm sweating or you have trouble with quick growth of underarm hair, the situation is easily remedied with both laser and IPL treatments which effectively remove underarm hair, and injectable Botox can control underarm sweating for up to six months.
B O U L E VA R D
55
It goes without question that Vancouverites are notorious in their quest for fitness and even though we spin, stretch and hot yoga to trim the tummy, a little extra is often needed, especially when our mid-sections slack due to aging and genetic predisposition. Help is available through nonsurgical treatments that improve the appearance of the stomach. While the clinic cannot produce six-pack abs or do your crunches, they can provide treatments that reduce stomach fat, tighten loose skin, and reduce stretch marks and surgical scars. CoolSculpting is the treatment that has had everyone buzzing for years. The Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic currently has two of these cryolipolysis procedure machines on the premises which deliver controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The fat cells then shrink, freeze, and die. Your body will naturally process the fat and eliminate these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted figure. This treatment is incredibly popular due to non-invasive technique with permanent results and requires no anaesthesia or downtime. For those concerned about safety, the CoolSculpting systems have built-in sensors that detect if the skin is getting too cold and thusly the system will shut down automatically. With all these treatments and procedures readily available at the Anti-Aging Medical & Laser clinic what reason would you have to not visit and inquire about the best options for rejuvenating your skin while boosting self-confidence and appearance? As our bodies’ largest organ, the skin requires dedicated care and it is imperative for health and well-being. Let the Frame’s work with you on developing a personalized journey that will benefit you more than ever imaginable. n

HIGH ART. HIGH STYLE. A TRIBUTE TO THE MASTERS. Inspired by paintings in the National Gallery’s European art collection, Oakridge is proud to present these stunning masterworks in a new way. In this fi rst edition of the series, we present a work by Gustave Doré (1832–1883), one of the most successful and prolific artists of the 19th century.
Doré’s imaginative illustrations of the great literary classics have forever changed the way we see the world. Despite his success as an illustrator, his driving ambition was to succeed as a painter, and his landscapes are among his most innovative paintings. In 1873–74 he travelled to the Highlands of Scotland and later captured in paint the vast scale and wild beauty of the region.

verybody knows that Alexa Loo is a two-time Olympian (2006 and 2010, parallel giant slalom snowboarding), Richmond city councillor (since 2014) and devoted mother (to sons, Louie and Sacha). Her accomplishments are numerous and impressive, enough to warrant her own Wiki page. There are many parts of her life that are highly publicized - and she's not shy - so you wouldn't be faulted for thinking you knew her well. But do you, really? Here are 10 things you didn't know about Alexa Loo.
1. THe SOund Of MuSiC iS HeR SOundTRACk TO Life Loo always has this running in the background and she played it so often while on the road (when competing) she actually wore through a copy. The heartwarming story and sing-along soundtrack keep Loo relaxed. Her absolute favourite part of the movie is the thunderstorm scene when all the von Trapp children scramble into Maria's bed, seeking comfort while she sings, "My favorite Things," which ends with "... and then i don't feel so bad."
2. HeR PARenTS MeT WHiLe Signing uP fOR A Ski BOOT CAMP Loo's parents are avid amateur skiers themselves and actually met in line for a pre-ski program at uBC in the early '70s. Seems prophetic, in hindsight. They both still enjoy skiing, even after her father sustained a ski injury in the early 2000s, which led to the loss of an eye. evidently, tenacity is another strong genetic trait with the Loos.
3. SHe LOveS A CAPSuLe WARdROBe Loo's all about efficiency and precision, and that includes her closet. She knows what works for her and has developed a professional uniform: lots of black with a pop of colour. Loo favours black Aritzia Cohen trousers with brightly coloured blouses, and breaks her solids-only poli-

cy for floral dresses. Her accessories are simple: her Olympic ring and a watch. even her lipsticks have been whittled down to three shades for daytime, casual and evenings.
4. SHe'S divORCed Loo isn't shy about this aspect of her personal life and says she "values happiness over the optics of staying married." Officially divorced since August 2017, Loo's biggest concern is for her two young boys and adopts a philosophical, optimistic approach. "We're still co-parenting, just not co-located. it's not ideal but nothing's perfect."
5. SHe'S ReALLy ATHLeTiC Snowboarding aside, Loo's always had a talent for sports - a wide variety of sports. While at the university of British Columbia (uBC), she was on the rowing team in her first year, then competed on the swim team for her third and fourth years. Before uBC, she swam competitively for the Richmond kigoos Swim Club. When she was pregnant with her second child, she decided to complete her yoga teacher training. "i was eight and a half months pregnant and doing handstands." And just last year she completed the 122 km-long granfondo bike ride from vancouver to Whistler. "i didn't train for it much," says Loo. "it's more about doing stuff that's fun."
6. SHe'S nOT OBSeSSed ABOuT CALORieS A lot of people assume that all elite athletes have an extremely strict food regimen. Some might, but Loo takes a more realistic approach. "i have to eat something within 45 minutes of a workout to replace the glycogen." But she's not always fussy about what that something is. "There's no personal chef... no weighing the food, no kale. i have to look after my mental self [as well] so i don't stress about it. eating something over eating nothing is the goal." Her go-to, no-fuss postworkout meal? A simple peanut butter sandwich and chocolate milk.

8. SHe LOveS TO BAke Baking is something she especially enjoys doing with her sons. Right now, for her busy household, it's all about the convenience of grab'n'go muffins. "Cranberries are grown in Richmond, so we make a lot of cranberry muffins - twice a week." it's the act of banking that Loo enjoys most: working with her hands, the tactile variations in textures, the glorious smell of freshly baked pastries throughout her home. fun fact: chocolate chip cookies are her favourite.
9. SHe LikeS TO Sing. ALL THe TiMe. "Singing make me feel good! There's a song for every occasion and if there isn't... i'm make up the lyrics. i'm like Weird Al yankovic but with tamer hair." Loo's not exaggerating. When her son Louie was born, he wasn't breathing, so she sang to him, making up encouraging words to the tune of "Twist and Shout". And he responded. during her training years, Loo confesses to driving her teammates "nuts" with songs like "Welcome to the glacier" sung to guns n' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle." But the truly odd thing about all of this? Loo does not like karaoke.
10. SHe'LL ALWAyS ReMeMBeR THe BOAT PeOPLe
7. RiCk HAnSen iS One Of HeR HeROeS "[Rick Hansen] rode past me at the start of his [Man in Motion] tour. it was just the beginning, just after Terry fox, nobody knew who he was and we were just starting to talk about disabilities." At the 2010 Olympics, Loo walked into the gym for a workout and was pleasantly surprised to see Hanson there and introduced herself to him. "i got tell him, 25 years later, that he was my hero." Loo has since volunteered with the international Paralympic Committee and today works with the Rick Hanson foundation in their difference Maker Program.

When Loo was nine years old, her mom ran a committee at their local church that sponsored refugees fleeing vietnam by boat after the vietnamese War - the Boat People. Her mom organized the donations and Loo remembers entire families coming over with nothing and needing everything from clothing to pots and pans to toiletries. "We were helping to set up entire households," she recalls. But there were also individuals who came to their community, and one woman ended up staying with eight months. This was happening during Loo's formative years, and it made an indelible impression upon her. "you put your money where your mouth is," says Loo. "We had planned a trip to florida when this happened, and we cancelled. We needed to take care of people more than we needed to go on a holiday." Loo says with conviction that it's events like this that have led her into a life of politics. And the woman who stayed with them, nearly 40 years ago? She lives in Toronto now with her two daughters and sends Loo's family a Christmas card ever year. n

n a quiet, tree-lined street in the elegant neighbourhood of West Point Grey sits enda b, an unassuming magnet for Vancouver’s style mavens. Few people know that “enda b” refers to Enda Bardell, the original owner of enda b. But it wasn’t until Yvonne Kwan acquired the business in 1984 that it gradually gained a reputation for showcasing some of the most fashionable clothes and accessories in the city. Today, enda b boasts a loyal clientele that stretches across all of Metro Vancouver and beyond. Kwan has earned her place as a Vancouver tastemaker through 30-plus years of experience in the fashion industry, from designer to wholesaler. During the ‘90s, Kwan ran her own line of novelty knitwear, successfully understanding current trends and producing sweaters that helped define the decade’s aesthetic. Her intimate understanding of Vancouver’s fashion proclivities has helped steer enda b to its current position as one of the city’s most stylish stores. When Kwan first acquired enda b, it was a small retail store focused on natural-fibre clothing - which was a good reflection of where Vancouver’s style was at three decades ago. But as the city grew in size and taste, so also has enda b. Kwan has always worked to stay in tune with her clients’ demands and has evolved the store’s inventory to reflect them. Today, enda b is a 4,000 square-foot boutique offering clothing and accessories from Canada and abroad, with one-third of the collections coming from European designers. Brands like Eileen Fisher, Luisa Cerano, Pennyblack and Mackage keep clients styled in fashions not easily matched elsewhere in town. As Vancouver’s grown into a world-class city, Kwan’s clients are demanding items that reflect a more cosmopolitan aesthetic.

ninity with an emphasis on fine tailoring. Mackage is Canada’s homegrown darling and world leader in envy-inducing outerwear. Coats are designed with exaggerated lines (predominantly at collars, sleeves and belts) with leather trim that hints of avant-garde elements, but always remains on the right side of accessible. You can’t go wrong with any these labels, advises Lau although she’s quick to mention enda b’s service-driven focus, which means customers will be shown a full variety of items depending on their needs. “We strive to give every customer who walks into our store exactly what they want. Some are desperate for a complete wardrobe change for the season, while some just want to unwind in a relaxing [retail] environment, and some are looking for general style advice.”
Because of enda b’s High Street location in one of Vancouver’s more well-heeled neighbourhoods that happens to be right at the entrance to the University of British Columbia, the store attracts a wide range of customers, from soccer moms to corporate executives to students. All have come to rely on enda b as a constant source for sartorial inspiration and friendly wardrobe advice. “We definitely have a significant portion of our clients that are direct neighbours, “ says Christina Lau Marketing Coordinator for enda b. “Some will come into our store while walking their dogs and it feels like catching up with old friends.” So what do old friends talk about when surrounded by glamorous clothes, shoes and accessories? They talk about trends in hem lengths, colourways and textures. They talk about what’s new and all the different places they’ll wear said new items in an attempt to reduce the cost-per-wear ratio. Perennial favourite brands at enda b are Rebecca Minkoff, Luisa Cerano and Mackage. Rebecca Minkoff is known for her luxury chic clothing and accessories that fuse the feminine and the urban for an Upper East Side vibe. She is probably best known for her statement leather bags, which are instantly recognizable without ever being ostentatious. Luisa Cerano is a German label with a penchant for luxurious textures such a leather, fur and knits. The overall silhouette is modern-femi68

For those that are prone to decision fatigue when faced with racks of options that all seemingly work, Lau suggests taking advantage of enda b’s complimentary personal shopping service. “With crazy schedules and hectic lifestyles, our customers often benefit from our personal shoppers who know our inventory inside-out and can make quick work of pulling an outfit - or entire capsule wardrobe - together with minimal effort.” This also works well for those on a budget, as personal shoppers can discretely find options that won’t break the bank. Once you’ve got your basics down pat, advises Lau, all you need to do is refresh your wardrobe seasonally with a few key pieces. For fall/winter staples, Lau favours cashmere sweaters, a kneelength down parka and over-the-knee-boots. Everything else can be added annually to elevate the style factor.
colour iS the neW neutral. thiS SeaSon We’re Seeing a lot of ceriSe, platinum, Sorbet and Sky.
For 2017, Lau is excited about a few trends in particular. “Colour is the new neutral,” she advises. “This season we’re seeing a lot of cerise, platinum, sorbet and sky.” After a summer of richly pigmented colours and oversized floral patterns, the trend for bold continues though with an appropriately
sludgier, moodier palette. If you’re reluctant to let go of your all-black winter wardrobe, try integrating colour through more familiar formats such as plum puffer coat or a classic wool pea coat in sorbet or a leather purse in rosy mauve. Another fall/winter classic is faux fur but this year, things get shaken up a bit. While caramel, chocolate brown and leopard print are standard faux fur colourways, the trend this year - again, taking a cue from summer - is colourblocking. You’ll see furry coats this year in modern schemes of beige, skyblue and graphite, taking a fun texture to even more whimsical heights - a joyful way to bring levity into a dark season. Even more familiar is the Equipment silk shirt (yes, still trending strong). Pairing this in a current colour with high-waist, wide-leg trousers (another strong trend) will instantly propel you into the
2017/18 season. Keep the trousers in a neutral such as graphite or army green and you’ll be able to pair them surprisingly well with nearly any other colour. Even better, wear the ensemble with block-heeled taupe booties and a backpack and you’ll look like you’ve just stepped off the pages of a September issue. n B O U L E VA R D

Fall into Metallics By Ana Viseroiu
M
etallics are bold, vibrant, and create dimension! This Fall introduce this Metallic finish to your Beauty products from soft shimmer shadows to major-impact glitters and Chrome finish glosses.
Texture: Luminizing primers. Primers are great to prep your skin with makeup, but they’re also beautiful to wear on its own. A luminizing Primer gives a pearl effect to the skin, not a sun beaming glow. Metallic Lipsticks are basically highlighters for your lips. I suggest wearing them in the evening and layering them on top of regular matte lipsticks for dimension.
Technique: Add a Metallic lipstick, concentrated on the center of your lips, top and bottom, helps create a pouty lip. Metallic eyeshadows are like wearing jewellery on your lids.
Technique: Concentrate the color on the lid and diffuse it near the eye socket, if applied using a wet brush they become even more metallic. If you want to amp things up just a little bit, focus your metallic eye toward the inner corner.
Tone: This Fall try Metallic with Warm tones, they fit every skin tone and its is very easy to take you from a natural to a dramatic looks. You can never have enough champagne tones in my opinion! www.anavbeauty.com n

rior to Jackie Chan’s interview, I’m dining with Lynn, the public relations director at Fairmont Chateau Whistler. When she hears I’ll be interviewing Jackie Chan, she suddenly looks excited and asks me to tell her all the details afterward. When the hotel's concierge, David, hears the name Jackie Chan, his blue eyes glow and he asks that I shake Chan’s hand for him. Chan has a considerable reputation overseas, but even I was surprised how well loved he is in Canada. In a black tracksuit and wearing shade, a mediumbuilt Chan walks in with a smile and casually

says hello. When the host presents him with the microphone, he flips it in his hands with a grin on his face. Chan, as the ambassador for Hong Kong Airlines, has flown in to help kick-off the new, non-stop flight from Hong Kong to Vancouver. After the host asks him a few questions about Hong Kong Airlines and Vancouver, the floor is opened to the media. As the only Chinese magazine invited to the press conference, Boulevard Magazine asks Chan two questions in Mandarin and he replies back in Mandarin. We have additional, exclusive interviewing time scheduled for after the media interview.
I am very diligent and learn continuously. I constantly think about how to change.
Chan began filming movies at age 6 and a half. In the 1970s, he worked as a stuntman in New Fist of Fury, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master, which started a flourishing career. In the ‘80s, movies like Project A, Police Story and Armor of God were great hits in Asia, but it was when he broke into Hollywood, with the Rush Hour series, that Chan became an acclaimed world success, including an appearance on the cover of Time magazine. Although other martial arts actors from his time have faded away, Chan’s star has not faded, and he is still very active on screen, releasing several new films each year. Earlier this year, Kung Fu Yoga was released in China and the box office sold over $1.6 billion. Despite being in the film business for 57 years, Chan’s box office appeal still amazes. In 2016, the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with an Oscar Award for Lifetime Achievement, the first Chinese recipient of such an honour. Although he debuted as a martial arts performer, he walked a different path from other martial arts stars, building himself into a successful actor. “I am very diligent and learn continuously. I constantly think about how to change. You can see that action actors around the world fade from the screen once they pass a certain age. How can we survive in the movie industry? You need to be an actor to survive. So for the past 15 to 20 years, I have been changing, changing the way I act. This is a big attempt and if the audience does not accept it, then I am doomed.

“I am not a young stud and I do not make a living with my looks. I truly rely on my own ability — from scripting to filming. I fine-tune the character I play and act in a way that suits me best. Some people like the change, some don’t. It is terrifying to learn that people do not like what they see. If it is half and half, I will keep going. Many people liked Shinjuku Incident, but not my fans. When I was shooting The Karate Kid, many people said, ‘Wow, acting as an old, impaired kungfu master!’ But when the movie was released, those same people said, ‘Look, he can act as well as performing martial arts.’ “In Dragon Blade and Skiptrace, you see that I am constantly changing — that is how I survive. If you only rely on action and one day you cannot move, you lose your audience. Even now, if I decide not to shoot action movies but art films, I believe I still have an audience. Like Clint Eastwood. Look at how he has been changing and he is still acting and directing at the age of 80. “So, I laid out my plans early on. I became a director in my 20s when I was most popular because if you are not popular, no one will let you direct. You see every one of my movies like Police Story, Project A and Drunken Master are all classics. After directing these movies, I stopped and let others direct. I want people to know that I can direct; I can screen write. One day, when people don’t want to see me on the screen, I can direct, be a martial arts director, or open up a school to teach people. I will always play a role in the entertainment industry.
On July 1st, the day to commemorate Canada's 150th anniversary, Jackie Chan stepped onto the stage in downtown Vancouver's Canada Place and, along with the Vancouver Children's Choir and Hong Kong Airlines flight attendants, sang three songs that express love and peace: a new song written by Jaycee Chan "A Better World", and the famous "Tomorrow Will Be Better" and "We are the World."
76
B O U L E VA R D
“Like Johnathan Lee says, ‘No matter how good you can sing, if no one writes songs for you, you can’t get anywhere.’ If you can sing, compose, play, arrange and be the producer, then you will last like Emil Chau, Jonathan Lee, Leehom Wang, all of whom are still popular. To be an actor, you need to be multi-talented and can’t just rely on looks. For example, the actors in Korea and especially in Japan, appeal to the audience with their looks. They can’t sing or dance and usually disappear after a year.” A reporter asks Chan when will he retire, and Chan responds with “No chance!” The 63-year-old Chan is planning to transform his acting career over the next 10 to 20 years. From Railroad Tigers, you can see clearly how he’s been changing over the years — less action, more drama and inner play. “If I want to act till an old age like Clint Eastwood, I can’t rely on marital arts,” he says. At the opening of the 2017 Chinese Film Festival in Budapest, Hungary, Chan expressed that he will focus more on drama and art films, and less on action ones. “Jackie Chan art films? Really?!” “I am trying arts films. Perhaps I will just direct and not star in it. This art film has been in the works for over 20 years. The screenwriter has brain congestion and cannot speak. I bought the script from him so he may live comfortably.” Chan concludes by talking about what drives him to continue.

“For the past 20 years, I have been searching for actors. I have spoken with Zhang Ziyi, Zhang Jingchu and Jing Tian about the story. It touched them and brought tears to their eyes. However, the feeling was lost by the time I found a director for the film. Over the years, I did a lot of talking and added many new elements into the story. My screenwriters said, ‘Why don’t you film it yourself?’ I have always wanted to, but I have no time. I like to shoot action and action comedy movies. Now, I am changing my image, as you can see in Kung Fu Yoga and The Foreigner. If you really want to be a director, you have to stop all your work and go make on-site visits, choose actors, etc. I do have several fun projects planned in which you will see a different me. Among them is the art film mentioned above, an animal film and an action film starring Sylvester Stallone. As for the storyline, it will be a secret for now. But one thing is for sure, Stallone and I will never act in a love story!” n

Sing,
Krug By Kelly Bai Images / Provided by Krug, a portion of the photos are taken by Kelly Bai
On this evening, spurred by Krug champagne and music, everyone was so happy that they wanted to fly. Standing up, dancing and singing along with the music, a large collective carnival makes for a hot atmosphere! Sing, Krug!
I
t is only late June, but the weather is extremely hot in Lance, France. With a wine glass in my hand and a headset on, I walk onto a wooden path towards the forest, which offers cool shade amidst the sizzling heat. Listening to Jacky Terrasson’s Jazz piano music while sipping on Krug Rosé gives the short walk in the forest an amazing and memorable feeling.
The forest suddenly come to life at the sight of a dozen tables set up under a white canopy for today’s Wild Lunch. Over 50 media from around the world are gathered here for Krug’s annual event. Boulevard Magazine is privileged to be the sole Canadian media invited. Earlier in the day, we saw Krug’s sixth generation descendant and the director of Krug, Olivier Krug, at the newly renovated Krug Champagne Château, which has been owned by LVMH since 1999. Oliver half-jokingly says he is “Krug’s gatekeeper.” “I came here almost everyday to see my grandparents and I grew up seeing how Krug champagne was made. I am here to ensure Krug’s tradition doesn’t change, that it is still made according to Joseph’s dream. This is why Krug stands out from others,” Olivier later says in an interview.

Joseph Krug was the founder of Krug Château in Lance, France. He believed happiness was the essence of champagne. It was his dream to make the perfect champagne each year regardless of the weather. He focused on the characteristics of every vineyard, chose the best grapes and preserved a large number of wines from different years. Mixing each year’s newly made champagne with aged ones, Joseph was able to come up with his dream champagne of perfect quality — Krug Grande Cuvée. In order to preserve his dream and pass on his unique technique, he wrote it all down in a notebook, which is kept at the winery. His dream and his idea are kept alive by his descendants and are instilled in every part of the wine-making process. Each year, Krug winery’s Chef de Caves, Eric Lebel, goes into seclusion to blend together Krug Grande Cuvée from 400 kinds of base wine. Among them, 250 kinds are from the currently year, while the other 150 are from previous years, with some from as long as 16 years ago. It is the mixing of wine from different years that gives Krug Grande Cuvée its rich taste and aroma. Each June, the newly mixed wine is moved to the cellar and kept for at least seven years, imparting a finer taste to the wine. When we arrived, we saw this year’s 172nd edition of the Krug Grande Cuvée put into the cellar and had a taste of the 162nd and 163rd editions of the Krug Grande Cuvée. Though they are from different years,

they both were perfect in their richness, taste and aroma, reminiscent of two concerts presented by the same orchestra. The Wild Lunch featured the 21st edition of the Krug Rosé made from three different kinds of grapes and wines — 51 per cent Pinot Noir, 41 per cent Chardonnay and 8 per cent Monie Pino. This was perfectly paired with food prepared by Michelin star chef, Arnold Lallement, including foie gras, lobster, Ankang fish, roast lamb chops, dry-aged steak and strawberry soup. The theme from the afternoon extended into the evening: a date with music, food and Krug champagne. Specially chosen musicians were asked to write original music, expressing their feelings after tasting Krug’s champagne, and to play them as Krug introduced this year’s vintage. In the courtyard of the Krug Chateau, fine wines are paired with the delicacies by the chef Arnauld Lallement, while musicians Lianne La Havas, Jacky Terrasson and Sly Johnson present beautiful music. “I once participated in a hearing and tasting seminar at Oxford University, where I was given two pieces of chocolate and was asked to pick music that goes with the chocolates. The first piece gave a feeling of ‘wow!’ whereas the second piece just felt mediocre. But, in fact, the chocolates were exactly the same,” said Krug CEO Maggie Henriquez, adding that Krug is currently sponsoring research being done at the Center for Music and Acoustics (IRCAM). “A good combination of taste and hearing can produce endorphin, and it can make people feel happy and heal sickness. Though we will not be pursuing a substantial increase in production, we will enhance our image, which is my vision for it.” Krug is, without doubt, high quality champagne, but the care the company also shows for humankind’s happiness and health is closely linked to the essence of champagne — after all, champagne should make people happy. And happiness there is, as all the guests are mesmerized by the champagne and music. We all stand up, sing and dance to the music! “Why not?” Maggie said after sharing her vision. Yes, why not? Krug, let’s sing! n Upper, Centre: Dinner under the stars paired with an outstanding performance from the musicians Lower: Winery chef Arnauld Lallement preparing food

Back on Track Odd Squad conference and gala aims to educate
I
By Shawn Conner
t’s been 20 years since the Odd Squad began its now-famous outreach programs in the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Over the past two decades, the volunteer group’s unique combination of peer-to-peer discussions, documentaries and presentations has earned recognition in Canada and abroad. But despite the accomplishments of the Odd Squad in battling addiction, today the group finds itself in the midst of the most challenging drug crisis Vancouver has ever faced. “The fentanyl thing is something we haven’t seen in the modern drug world,” said group co-founder and current office manager Chris Graham.
92
B O U L E VA R D
Now the Odd Squad is holding a 20th anniversary conference and gala December 1, featuring the premiere of a new documentary, Understanding Fentanyl. The Back on Track Conference will feature speakers from across North America; live music will cap off the day. From humble beginnings two decades ago, when a group of seven Vancouver Police Department officers banded together to purchase a video camera, the group has accomplished a lot. One of the founding officers, Al Arsenault, has been documenting the Downtown Eastside, taking photos of the day-to-day business on the streets, to deliver an education and prevention slide-show to schools. In 1998, the National Film
Board became involved, and the Odd Squad received a boost from the NFB-backed production Through a Blue Lens, which told the story of the Downtown Eastside, using the Squad’s footage. Today, the Odd Squad Productions Society has morphed into a charitable foundation with three arms: documentaries, presentations and a peerto-peer program, which involves Odd Squad members providing groups of community and peer leaders with a rudimentary understanding of the issues surround substance abuse and gang association, along with coping solutions. Shortly before this interview with Boulevard, the Odd Squad’s Chris Graham spent a Monday night with members of the Kamloops Blazers and their coach, Mike Needham — an ex-Pittsburgh Penguin/Stanley Cup winner — as well as four RCMP officers from Kamloops.
“We take them out in the harbour in the police boat, and show them how drugs enter the country,” Graham said of his approach. “We videotape, take pictures and we equip them with the ability to then go back into their community and present their own information about what they learned from us.” Four founding members, including Arsenault and Graham as well as Toby Hinton and Mark Steinkampf, are still involved with the Squad. Arsenault and Graham have retired from the force, holding down post-retirement jobs; both Hinton and Steinkampf are still officers. More than 100 Vancouver Police Department officers volunteer with the group in a given year. “Most of us have a little bit to do with all three arms,” Graham said.

It took some time, but we are now recognized as a leader in the prevention/education field and are strongly supported by police associations domestically and abroad.
Odd Squad members have travelled extensively, visiting the Middle East, the US, China, New Zealand, Africa and Mexico to deliver the message. According to the group’s mission statement, its goal is “to empower youth to make positive life choices about drug use and criminal behaviour through educational material as well as documentaries.” “We use our own experiences and other job-related experiences to illustrate the harmful outcomes associated with substance abuse, gang association and other anti-social behaviour,” Graham wrote in an email. “It took some time, but we are now recognized as a leader in the prevention/education field and are strongly supported by police associations domestically and abroad.” At the Back on Track Conference, which takes place at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront, guest speakers will include drug and addictions specialists like Kevin Sabet, who is the director of the Drug Policy Institute and founder of Project SAM, which advocates for a marijuana policy focussing on public health, prevention and treatment. Entertainment for the gala will include a set by blues musician Jim Byrnes, who is also on the Odd Squad board of directors, and organizers are still in 94

the process of confirming Hockey Night in Canada sportscaster Scott Oake for the keynote address, as well as honoured guests such as Governor General David Johnston. Twenty years ago, when the Odd Squad started, the small, dedicated group could hardly have foreseen the scale of the current drug crisis, or anticipate how valuable and potentially life-saving their work would become. “The fentanyl thing is an ultra-level of drug use,” Graham said. “These drugs are so strong that the chances of taking a fatal dose are so much higher. A lot of people aren’t even aware of what they’re getting.” Awareness has always been an issue with the illicit drug market, Graham notes. But the stakes are even higher now. "We’re a prevention/education group that delivers fact-based information to youth so they can make informed lifestyle choices," Graham said. “If you don’t get involved in this type of behaviour in the first place, someone else won’t have to treat you and someone else won’t have to prematurely bury you. And maybe you will live a productive and fulfilling life." n

The Dark and The Wounded
P
ainful memories or experiences have traumatized so many people and not always is there an outlet to address the damage or help to heal even in later years. Many people simply choose to suppress and continue to live with the fear of potentially facing the suffering yet again. The path to healing can lead one down many twists and turns resulting in reliving unresolved distress that has been dormant. Methods of healing can be as distinct and countless as the pain or trauma itself. Prompted by the painful confession of a close friend who suffered unthinkable childhood abuse, local artist James Picard was moved to create The Dark and The Wounded painting series as a way to help with the healing. “As individuals and as a society, we’re not dealing with the deeper issues. The Dark and The Wounded is about understanding and healing and looking at things we’ve been afraid to acknowledge. This is about facing reality, getting past the fear, and finding freedom.” He began the project with works that reveal the darkest and most severe expressions of human fragility. Picking the most gloomy, dreary and fearful places on this continent, the artist decided that this was where he would place the makeshift galleries for The Dark and The Wounded. In order to gain ac-
98

cess to many of these sites only reserved for filmmakers, James had to pretend that he was making a documentary. Pretense became reality and the film was born. “The Dark and The Wounded series is not only about the consequences of our unacknowledged pain. It is about being aware that we all suffer. Through acceptance, we can become more compassionate, towards ourselves and others, and we can heal our wounds.” One may question how being forced to revisit the sadness will resolve the issue but he found this exercise truly to be a way to bring people together, to share, to discuss and ultimately for some, enabling a starting point for healing. The result was, and continues to be, surprising even for the artist. The artist is touring around the world with the award winning film garnering much recognition. Confronting a hidden or tragic past may be the catalyst that can in fact bring about the restoration of healthy mindset. “Beyond Fear…there is freedom.” n Leeta Liepins leanwithleeta@outlook.com Artist Bio: www.darkandwounded.com/about Documentary website: www.darkandwounded.com Photography: Cole Krahn
