What does your

Halloween costume

say about you? By Lisa Manfield

I

t’s one of the frequently asked questions you’ll hear this month, and potentially a tough one to answer: what are you going to be for Halloween?

For kids, the appeal of Halloween is perhaps equally split between costume and candy. But for adults, Halloween is not so much a chance to gorge on treats as it is to play out their costumed fantasies and explore their deep-seated fears or desires. Or so I thought. Until I started to dig into the psychology behind Halloween costumes. I, for one, struggle every year to come up with a costume I’m excited about: something unique, interesting and somehow representative of both my current psyche and the year’s Zeitgeist. This year, I decided to enlist some good old-fashioned help in the form of an online quiz entitled What’s Your Halloween Costume Personality? Surely the internet knows all about how my deepest, darkest fears and desires can translate into a cool costume. The quiz asked me questions about my style, shopping habits, and Halloween costume goals, and after what I’m sure was a very scientific calculation, revealed my Halloween costume personality to be: girly. Interesting, given I’m not much of a girly girl. Taking the quiz gave me a chance to reflect back on costumes from Halloweens past: one year I turned a fancy yet unworn gown into a costume for Carrie from Sex and the City. Girly? Definitely. Another year, I converted a high-collared lace top and long skirt into a suffragette costume. Girly? Well, certainly reflective of the style of femininity prevalent during the late

20

B O U L E VA R D

19th century. Another year I found the gawdiest mumu ever, paired it with a curly red wig and brash lipstick and became Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company, who epitomized a certain femininity, if not the most desirable kind. But none of these costumes really reflected my innermost desires and fantasies. So why, I wondered, had I chosen them? Well, practicality certainly played a part. I prefer shopping my own closet for a costume I’ll only wear once. But further research on the psychology of Halloween costumes uncovered something interesting: people don’t typically choose costumes representing what they wish they could be. Instead, our costumes tend to reflect exactly what we aren’t. In fact, Halloween is a chance to try on a character or lifestyle we’ll likely never live out in real life. For me, what the quiz illuminated was that Halloween is a time to get all dolled up -- girly, sexy and a little provocative -- which is something I don’t generally do in my daily life. And I think there might actually be something to that. I’ll never be Carrie, a suffragette or Mrs. Roper (although I suppose time will tell on that one!), but it’s fun to put on the dresses, makeup and wigs and role play for a day. Happy Halloween, players! n

estled in the lush vines looking over Osoyoos Lake in the South Okanagan, LaStella is an award-winning, boutique winery producing some of the best wines in British Columbia. Walking through the manicured vines and the serenity that surrounds the winery, you’ll notice that the passionate staff have become like a family, working together at producing a variety of wines that their many loyal customers wait patiently to experience. With a vision to offer a select number of high quality wines rather than mass produce its vintages, this boutique winery produces a limited amount of hand-crafted varieties. The Tuscan-style tasting room welcomes clients and visitors from all over the world. Here, visitors are greeted by knowledgeable staff who live and breathe the wine world. They can enjoy the ultimate relaxation of sipping wine on the tasting room’s patio — an experience further enhanced by spectacular views of the lake and vineyard.

Members of Piccolo Wine Club and LaStella’s Wine Society enjoy several benefits, including an opportunity to learn about new wines before the information is public, and the chance to purchase exclusive, limited-production bottles. Each bottle of white, rose and red wine at LaStella receives the ultimate in attention and care before it reaches the consumer. LaStella’s name origins from Italy, meaning “star,” which can be seen on its label. Each wine has its own story — and to convey this uniqueness, many of the wines are named after Italian musical notes. Since it’s conception, the winery’s philosophy has been and continues to be to build a family atmosphere among its staff, attract clients who will anticipate visiting every season, and to offer an experience greater than merely purchasing a bottle of wine. n

MaxMara ItalIan luxury Brand Max Mara release lIMIted edItIon Purse for VancouVer

by catherine tse

A

s the ultimate thank-you to Vancouver, Italian fashion house Max Mara has created a handbag for a city that's been good to this brand for over 30 years. It's pink, it's plush and it's limited edition - very limited, as in only 35 units available in the world.

"The Vancouver woman is sophisticated, but relaxed," said the handbag's designer, Elena Pesci at an exclusive launch party in Vancouver. "The fashion here is beautiful but very different from what we see in Italy...women here are playful." "Sophisticated and playful" perfectly describe this handbag, which features mink fur angled sides flanking a suede leather front, all in a soft powder pink. The angles were designed to mimic Vancouver's iconic glass towers that

dominate the skyline, and the juxtaposition of textures reflects Vancouver's similarly diverse terrain, which ranges from mountains to forests to water. The purse comes with a removable calf leather shoulder strap (long enough to wear crossbody) and two calf leather top handles detailed with rose gold palladium hardware and a magnetic closure. The sides can be tucked in, origami style, to create a more bucket-bag silhouette, making this a truly versatile piece. Each handbag also comes with a complimentary matching leather snap-closure pouch (with a retail value of $395) and detachable pocket mirror. Inside, each purse is individually numbered on a specially designed tag that depicts Vancouver's skyline, featuring Harbour Centre. To protect both purse and pouch, each come with matching dust bags that also showcase Vancouver's skyline. Anticipation for this handbag is so fierce that a devoted Max Mara fan waited for hours before the preview event to ensure she was able to acquire the #1 serial in this collection. Made in Italy and available exclusively at all Max Mara Vancouver locations, $3,225. www.maxmara.com n

Self-Taught French Master Designer

Christophe Delcourt

By Kelly Bai Translation by Emily Tan

Y

ou have to admit some people are born geniuses, like Christophe Delcourt, the French furniture designer who is seated in front of me. It wasn’t until he was in his thirties before he discovered his love in furniture design and turned to the industry. Without any training in design or furniture making, he designed and made several pieces, brought them to Maison & Objet, the international home decor fair in Paris, and won the Designer of the Year award.

B O U L E VA R D

29

Christophe described his experience in an understatement and shrugged at my fuss as if to say, “What’s so amazing?” Christophe was born in 1966 in Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France. After graduating in 1988 from Cours Florent, a theatre school in Paris, he furthered his studies in École du Passage in Paris in 1989. If he continues down this path, he may become a star on the French stage. However, his career took a surprising turn when he suddenly realizes his true passion in designing. He left the theatre, became a furniture designer and found his first studio in Paris’ Marais area in 1998. A year later, his first works were showcased at Paris’ international home decor fair and he won the Designer of the Year award. Isn’t it astonishing? The world of a genius is this incredible. It didn’t take long for Christophe to be known for his fine handcrafted furniture. He designed for France’s premier luxury furniture brand, Roachburg, Cartier’s Tokyo showroom, Saint Regis Bal Harbour Resort in Miami, and LV’s offices in Paris, Barcelona and Hong Kong. “I designed and made every piece of work from scratch.” Christophe explained, “This is different from industrial designers, who need to work with different companies to manufacture their designed products.” His customized works meet his clients’ needs and tastes. Like the popular slow food culture in France, he works slowly to ensure each piece of work is an art boutique.

30

B O U L E VA R D

design

B O U L E VA R D

31

Christophe’s furniture is simple, clean and creative. Natural lines and materials along with superb craftsmanship makes his furniture a low-key luxury. Like his natural born design talent, he strongly advocates nature and the use of natural materials. “Nature is the number one element in my design process. If you look closely at nature, you will find many shapes, colors, texture, and the way they intertwine and arranged can be used in furniture design.” he said. Various natural materials such as wood, ceramics, steel and textiles are used extensively in his collection. “Wood is my favorite material for it has life and can be sublimated by the craftsman.” Christophe said. Besides drawing inspiration from nature, architectural designs also nourish his creativity. He incorporates into his designs the straight or curved lines, and the simple, rustic qualities found in buildings. He strives for simplicity in his designs and materials used. Christophe’s design is showcased in many high-end art galleries and showrooms around the world, including Ralph Pucci in the US, Avenue Road in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, and Le Cadre Gallery in Hong Kong. ■

S

tylish, modern and full of charm, this apartment in Moscow, Russia is the home of a young family. Designer Ekaterina Lashmanova designed for them a fresh and stylish interior that is not just a home, but a creative, inspirational living space. From high ceilings to detailed curtains, everything is custom-made by skilled craftsmen.

The high ceiling and the floor-to-ceiling glass windows makes the living room bright, transparent and spacious, while offering an unobstructed beautiful city view of Moscow. The smoky gray walls, beige sofas, green and blue armchairs, and the large use of Morandi’s own high-grade, three-color geometric floor not only adds texture and interest to the room, but brings together the colors harmoniously. The “Morandi” color is derived from the paintings of the Italian painter Morandi. His works utilize moderate hue in low saturation, looking like a “stained layer of gray”. To use “Morandi” color, the industry blends gray and white into the original color to lessen its strength. The low saturation of the Morandi color creates an exquisite feel, while the gold colored coffee and side tables, chandeliers and the gold color on the chair legs adds luxury and sophistication to the space. Through adjacent doors is the kitchen and dining room. The diamond-shaped flooring makes this space separate yet connected to the living room. The sand blue dining chairs, round, light ochre dining table, beige kitchen cabinets are in harmony with the flooring.

This philosophy continues to the exterior which utilizes concrete, architectural paneling and yellow cedar to accentuate the modern design.

42

The home is built on a slope with a significant portion of the southern face glazed to showcase an unobstructed view of Stanley Park. The layout of the Ultra Modern home is unconventional with the kitchen and daily living spaces located on the uppermost floor, and bedrooms on the lower floors. Using this non-traditional layout, the garage was able to be on the top floor where there is a route directly into the kitchen to drop off groceries.

The main floor has an open design concept, with a twoway fireplace and a large kitchen island used to separate the rooms and create a sense of privacy as needed. The main floor also houses the adult’s retreat, with master bedroom, including ensuite and lounge area. The children’s room can be conveniently accessed via stairs or elevator to the lower level. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the house was the floating stairs, cantilevered off the architectural concrete wall. The structure of the home is largely concrete and steel with very little dimensional lumber used. “We were thrilled to be able to work on this ultra modern home, and to be recognized by the industry’s Ovation Awards, said Michael Upward,’ of Upward Construction. ‘The construction of this home presented many challenges, especially with the heavy use of architectural concrete, and reveals at floor level. The straight lines in the house reveal even the smallest imperfections, so framing tolerances had to be extremely tight.’

Certified Built Green with 2lb closed cell spray foam used throughout, the airtightness matched with in-floor radiant heat and the HRV unit ensure a very high level of comfort year-round. To view this project and other award-winning homes, check out www.ovationawards.ca. n

teen Skaaning, a former carpenter from Denmark, employs a critical eye when it comes to furniture making. Whether it’s in the design, the choice of material or quality of craftmanship, everything must be done with care. “I know what good furniture is!” said Skaaning with pride.

As owner of Inspiration Furniture on W 6th Ave, Skaaning personally selects the different brands of furniture displayed in the 40,000 square-foot showroom. Of that, 7,000 square feet are devoted to a shop within a shop featuring the Italian brand Natuzzi Italia. Founded in Taranto, Italy in 1959 by designer Pasquale Natuzzi, Natuzzi Italia is currently the largest furniture manufacturer in Italy, as well as a world leader in leather sofas, marketing its products in 123 countries on five continents. This brand is dedicated to the concept of a harmonious home, its understanding and love of beauty and art and the pursuit of quality living. Natuzzi strives for excellence in its design and production. This is well reflected in the quality of all its furniture: from its original sofas, armchairs and other living room furniture and accessories, to its restaurant series and latest bedroom series.

Quality and value are the principles to which Inspiration Furniture has adhered for the past 17 years. This is what led the company on to the road to success.

For decades, over 100 professional designers, colour experts, architects, engineers and interior decorators have worked together on a daily basis at the Natuzzi Fashion Design Center in Milan and Santeramo in Colle, Italy. On average, more than 6,000 designs are launched each year. However, only one of every 50 ideas passes Pasquale Natuzzi’s strict selection process and moves on to the production phase. Each Natuzzi sofa is made in Italy (undergoing 135 steps of production!) and is quality-controlled with the use of automatic, dust-free, sound-proof and environmentally friendly equipment. Another of Inspirations’s brands, Formitalia has been a leader in the luxury furniture industry since it debuted its first design, the Boutique Collection, in 1991. Inspiration Furniture was the first distributor to introduce the brand in North America. With its high-quality material, outstanding design and excellent craftsmanship by way of Florentine craftsmen, Formitalia became a fabulous spokesperson for all that is “Made in Italy.” “Their products are not made by large-scale assembly lines, but hand-crafted one by one.” Skaaning explained. All Formitalia products are produced in Tuscany and handcrafted in Florence, Prato, Pistoia and Pisa. This top-tier furniture manufacturer was favoured by luxury car brands such as Aston Martin, Mercedes Benz and Lamborghini and a collaboration ensued. Together, they created ultra-luxury furniture with features characteristic of their brands.

This series of furniture incorporates the essence of each car brand in design, in part aby paying tribute with a very specific use of materials. Using carbon fiber, magnesium, aluminum, leather, wool and cashmere, the advanced industrial technology of these famous cars is perfectly integrated with and applied to furniture production. The result is fashionable and comfortable, while adding a sense of luxury to the homee. This fine furniture has an important place in Inspiration’s spacious showroom.

In addition to top Italian luxury brands, Inspiration Furniture showcases a variety of quality products. “Regardless of the price, it must have value. If the quality is not good, it is worthless no matter how low the price is.” says the former carpenter Skaaning. ven in the high-flying world of interior design, Karin Bohn stands out. Her Vancouver design firm, House of Bohn, has an impressive portfolio of commercial, residential and multi-family projects with more in the works. Locations range from the far-flung (a penthouse in China) to the familiar (a plant-based pizza joint in Vancouver). She’s a hard worker who’s always busy -- and she makes it look like fun. At 37, she is on top of her game, using her creativity and drive to build her brand and expand her base. She’s a passionate vlogger and storyteller, posting weekly on a range of topics including entrepreneurship, interior de-

sign, travel and lifestyle. She has close to 60,000 subscribers on her Karin Bohn YouTube channel, and she recently added a separate series called Bohnafide, a step-by-step look at her North Vancouver townhouse reno, to help her audience with their own renovations.

“ I think living without colours is like living without love. ”

After moving in two years ago with her husband, Chris, and their French bulldog, Oscar, she had it gutted it to the studs, installed walk-in closets and opened up the kitchen, which she then painted black. “Black interiors are back in a big way,” she says, “we’re moving away from the whiteon-white trend. I’m a big fan of colour – I think living without colours is like living without love.” She describes her decorating style as “eclectic,” a heterogeneous blend of colours, textures, styles, trends and time periods, and attributes her sophisticated taste to the influences of her mixed cultural background: “I spent summers with my grandparents on my dad’s side in Germany and ate chicken feet with my mom’s family right here in Vancouver.”

Inspired by art, nature and the visuals in TV shows like “The Crown” and “Game of Thrones,” she loves working with big spaces, cool finishes and fantasy interiors. In the end, though, “it’s more about the client than the project. I love the collaborative process and the creative freedom that my clients give me. From an early age, I knew I wanted to have my own business. And after ten years in this business, it just keeps getting better.” She has been entrepreneurial since she was a young kid, selling chocolate bars in the grade school lunchroom. As a teenager at high school in Kelowna, she threw big parties, selling tickets, hiring DJs and putting up flyers. Her energy and drive took her through a stint in competitive sports and then to starting up her business after university and design school. With her innate skill at reading space, interior design was a natural for her. Although she takes great pleasure from her high-end residential projects, she says renovating her mom’s North Vancouver space was probably her favourite assignment of all. “It’s small, chic, warm and humble,” she says, “and it seems to be our family’s favourite gathering place. Redoing it turned out to be a surprisingly intimate and rewarding project.”

cov e r c e le br it y She was excited about appearing on Boulevard’s cover wearing that dreamy Valentino dress. “It’s so light and ballerina-like. If I hadn’t chosen interior design, I might have gone into dance or fashion. I’ve always been fascinated with style and the architecture of clothing.”

From Audrey Hepburn To Meghan Markle, Givenchy Epitomises Timeless Beauty

GIVENCHY BEAUTY’S FIRST CANADIAN COUNTER O P E N S I N VA N C O U V E R Written by

his past June, Givenchy Beauty launched its very first Canadian department store counter at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver. You may know Givenchy fashions from the runway and a selection of its fragrances and cosmetics from other retail sources, but this is the first time the entire beauty collection from this luxury Parisian brand is available at a single counter in Canada.

And this counter is not just in Canada’s premier luxury retailer but in a place of prominence within. Vancouver’s Holt Renfrew recently unveiled its new Beauty Hall, a 16,000 square-foot renovation that spans the entire floor. To enter, customers make their grand entrance down a long escalator and at the base of that escalator is the Givenchy counter.

Along with key members of the Givenchy Beauty team, Barbara Wolfson, Vice President Store Experience and Buying Partner at Holt Renfrew, was present during the grand opening of the counter. “Holt Renfrew’s place as luxury leader is reinforced with the addition of Givenchy Beauty to our already powerful roster of designer brands in the Vancouver store. As one of the world’s great names in fashion and beauty, Givenchy is a natural addition to the Beauty Hall and we are thrilled to offer it to our clients. “

Currently, this counter holds the Canadian exclusive collection of the entire L’Atelier de Givenchy perfume portfolio. Givenchy’s first perfume was launched in 1957, L’Interdit, an homage to Hubert de Givenchy’s friend and muse, Audrey Hepburn. The L’Aterlier perfume lineup is uniquely innovative and elegant, resting along a sophisticated spectrum of unisex scents. Neroli Originel was actually inspired by a dress worn by Hepburn, flush with neroli blossoms floating over a base of musk-scented vanilla. Their best selling fragrance from this collection is Ylang Austral, an exotic and chic woody floral that opens with luxurious ylang-ylang before revealing a base of sunny sandalwood. ($265, 100ml)

Givenchy nail polish is another exclusive found only at the Holt Renfrew counter, though most customers flock to Givenchy for their seasonal, limited edition releases. The Spring Summer 2018 makeup collection is called Couture Outlines, a tribute to the art of creation and takes its inspiration from the graphic lines of stockman mannequins.

Comprised of matte and glowy textures, editorial yet wearable shades, the collection’s superstars are the Couture Atelier Palette (four shades - brown, red, blue and white - that depict the harmony shared amongst the four hallmark colours of a tailor’s dummy, $82) and the Teint Couture Cushion Glow (a colour-correcting cushion that also highlights, $62).

For those looking to explore Givenchy Beauty for the first time, their Le Rouge Perfecto Beautifying Lip Balm ($44) is a cult favourite. Housed in a slim case wrapped in genuine pink leather, this is an elegant lip balm that’s highly moisturising and plumping. It also features a formula that is pH-sensitive, tinting lips with a sheer wash of pink. And Givenchy’s innovative Phenomen’Eyes Mascara ($37) with the spherical brush is beloved for its ability to push lashes upwards with volume and separation.

Givenchy Beauty also releases Couture Edition products with special packaging that reflect patterns taken from past collections. This season, the print is a multicoloured floral against a black background taken from Givenchy’s Autumn Winter 2013 ready-to-wear collection. Its feminine yet moody print, set on genuine leather, perfectly reflects Givenchy’s legacy of avant-garde elegance. This Couture Edition packaging is available on two cult-favourite products, Givenchy’s iconic Le Rouge lipstick in shade No. 315 Framboise Velours ($48.50) and with the Prisme Libre Loose Powder in No. 1 Mousseline Pastel ($75). ■

etite, so smart, loves being online and was built to multitask. While not an actual person, Clarisonic’s new Mia Smart 3-in-1 Connected Sonic Beauty Device could very well become your new best friend. Clarisonic invented the sonic cleaning category over a decade ago and throughout those years, each new launch has not only brought improvements in form and function but also mirrored what consumers were clamouring for from their advanced skincare tools. This latest model delivers Clarisonic’s smartest skin solution ever. In some ways, this is the Clarisonic you already know and love: it cleans six times better than hands alone and 89 per cent better than wipes, and by switching out different attachment heads it transforms from a cleansing tool to an anti-aging device to makeup applicator. What makes this a departure from its predecessors (besides the sleek new design that makes it easier to grip especially in the shower), are the cleansing programs: Daily, Gentle and Smart. The Smart Mode connects to your phone via Bluetooth where you can choose different preprogrammed cleansing programs or create your own. Try the Daily Cleanse Mode in the morning and the Complete Make-up Removal routine in the evening.

There’s even a Soft Start feature that allows for easy acclimation to cleansing routines. This automatic setting is fully adjustable in the app and starts any cleansing mode at 80% power on the first use and will then gradually climb to full power after two weeks of use. No more purging! n $229 at www.clarisonic.ca and other retailers.

Shine Bright Like a DiamonD how to find the perfect highlighter palette By Ana Viseroiu

Metal Moon: This is the lightest creamy highlighter in the kit. Use it to brighten any other colour, or apply it on your brow bone and inner corners of your eyes to give you a quick eyelift.

lightning Dust:

This icy pink tone is one of my favorite colours to add to the apples of the cheeks, as a highlighter over blush.

Fire Crystal anD girl next Door: These two colours will change your life! They are the absolute best for a natural effortless effect, and they will still be lighter than your skin tone. They’re a perfect option for everyday wear. A metallic champagne gold pigment with hints of glitter, they leave an eyecatching chrome effect wherever applied.

erfect skin—it’s every girl’s dream. When your face looks fresh and healthy, there’s an extra spring in you step. You look instantly more put together. The confidence boost makes you feel radiant and powerful, and your true personality can shine through. But how do you get there? Between peels, masks, scrubs, concealers, moisturizers, and more, building the right skin care regimen for you can feel overwhelming. One quick fix that I love is a skin-illuminating highlighter, like our Master Glow Kit. A good highlighter is essentially a hack for getting a flawless-looking face. When applied, it’s kind of like having your own personal lighting team wherever you go, adding dimension to your face without getting into an epic promakeup artist contouring session. Most cosmetics are born in the classroom, and that’s also the case for our Master Glow Kit. We created it for our Master Glam Class, where students learn how to create sharper-looking cheekbones, fuller-looking lips, brighter-looking eyes, and a narrower-looking nose. The Master Glow Kit is a cream–powder hybrid that instantly melts into skin and blends with almost zero effort. Another win: It’s loaded with superfine shimmer for an ultra-smooth, creamy texture. But just like foundation, not every highlighter is made for every skin tone. To make sure no girl goes unglammed, our master glow kit comes with a full range of shades:

is anything but ashy on skin. It’s a soft golden coral that works incredibly well on deeper skin tones.

troPhy WiFe:

This yellow gold highlighter’s cream-to-powder formula is super pigmented and blends so smoothly onto the skin! You can wear it on your cheeks or as eyeshadow.

Mean honey:

This one delivers a light dewiness. This colour gets a special mention for how magical it looks on everyone! Apply it on your cheeks and temples for a fresh-faced glow.

hustle BaBy: No matter where it’s applied, from the cheeks to the whole face, this hue is guaranteed to leave you beaming and warmed up with bronze! It’s one of my favorites for any skin tone. ginger Binge anD MosCoW Mule: With their bronze base, both of these colours were created with deeper skin tones in mind. The cream formula is great on dry skin, and you can use these two on both the face and eyes! Skin care can be tough. It’s a ton of work to figure out and stick to a good skin care regimen. But luckily, a flawless look with fresh, dewy skin doesn’t have to take a lifetime to achieve. With a little help from a great skin-illuminating highlighter, you can get the boost you need with just a few brushstrokes. Ready for your photo shoot? n

his season’s hottest art ticket takes viewers on an unusual and engaging journey. The unlikely destination is the 105-year-old Patricia hotel on East Hastings Street in Strathcona, Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and home to much of the indigent Downtown Eastside. “I think that area is the most true area of Vancouver, where real life questions are faced,” says Vancouver Biennale Senior Curator Marcello Dantas.

A corridor’s length of rooms on the second floor of the old hotel turn out to be a brilliant curatorial choice for the immersive experience of “Curious Imaginings,” the sculpture and video exhibit by Patricia Piccinini presented by the 2018 – 2020 Vancouver Biennale. Although the life forms she imagines don’t exist today, genetic engineering could open unforeseen possibilities in the future.

The Australian hyperrealist sculptor’s works, based on themes of genetics, ethics, the planet and its possibilities, have attracted a huge international following. Her 4-city travelling exhibition in Brazil, whose record-breaking 1.4 million attendance established her as the most-visited contemporary artist in the world, was also curated by Mr. Dantas; he sees this venue, as her first outside a museum, as “a platform for inclusion and discussion.” Working with her husband/partner/production manager, sculptor Peter Hennessey, and her team of collaborators, she prepared a selection of existing works and videos, and sculpted a new piece specifically for Vancouver. “The Builder” is a small transgenic beaver-based character – a buck-toothed humanoid who squats on a fleshy tail amid a disarray of white linens in a small, dim room.

Seen in the context of lived-in rooms in a faded hotel, her unnervingly lifelike pieces force viewers to confront the disturbance and anxieties they may experience when facing any kind of physical differences. At first repellent, then alluring, they find a way to draw us in, provoking the journey from anxiety to connecting with things we initially thought were weird. “The initial reaction to Patricia’s creatures is repulsion but then you find love and tenderness in them,” says Marcello Dantas. “They long for inclusion, just like the people around East Hastings.” Ms. Piccinini’s broad definition of beauty, compassion and recurring themes of fertility, motherhood and sexuality instill layers of depth into the characters she imagines in silicon, fibreglass and human hair. Ultimately, she makes us see they are all beautiful.

“Curious Imaginings”

is on from September 14 – December 15 at the Patricia Hotel, 403 E. Hastings. n 72

By Kelly Bai Translation by Emily Tan

very September, Toronto is a hot spot for the whole film world. Founded in 1976 and now in its 43rd year, the Toronto Film Festival has been closely linked to three major European film festivals — Cannes, Venice and Berlin — in recent years. The quality of the participating films continually increases, and every year’s “People’s Choice Award” winning film is a potential nominee for the prestigious Academy Awards. The Gala Presentation and Special Presentation programs at the Toronto Film Festival are closely followed by all, since it’s films featured in these two programs that compete for the “People’s Choice Award.” Some of the films featured in the festival in 2018 include Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly; Outlaw King, a

Scottish war film starring Chris Pine; Window, directed by Steve McQueen; Beautiful Boy, which co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell; Galveston, directed by Mélanie laurent; A Star is Born, which co-stars lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper; Shadow, by Chinese director Zhang Yimou; and The Hidden Man by Jiang wen. Some 255 full-length films and 88 short films (for a total of 343) were slated for participation in this year’s festival. Most of these are new films —138 films are world premieres, 22 films are international premieres, 72 films are north American premieres. Among the 7,926 films that were submitted, over 300 fine works were selected for the festival. we have chosen the best of the best to introduce to you.

A Driving force An IntervIew in Luxury wIth niccolò Ricci

W

By Helen Siwak

ith the “A Driving Force” Fall/ Winter Collection 2018 carefully bundled and heading for Stefano Ricci boutiques worldwide, CEO Niccolò Ricci stopped in Vancouver for a quick visit at the Alberni Street location that bears his father’s name. A small window of time allowed me a petite visite to learn more about the pieces that would be soon adorning the eagle-headed mannequins in the boutiques’ storefront windows. Is the “Stefano Ricci man” looking beyond the classics for garments to fit all aspects of his lifestyle? Since we launched our sportswear collection, we encountered a growing interest from our clients. This includes the younger clients, of course, but also leaders that like paying more attention to their leisure time. In particular, during the last seasons, we focused on the dynamic man. I am often traveling and, in particular, it’s on these trips that I appreciate the comfort of our products. With deconstructed and soft jackets, the finishing of the leather against the skin reminds me that, more than having an impeccable look, it’s important to feel comfortable and at ease. It’s better to feel good rather than to look good. The Spring/Summer 2018 sunglasses were spectacular. What accessories can we expect for Fall/Winter? This is an additional step in the company’s growth. We are already present in the market with our eyewear, but we have identified technological solutions that express that little bit of “something more” that we are always seeking in our constant search for perfection.

The crocodile belts are embellished by a new line of buckles that were designed by my father Stefano, feature our unmistakable eagle head, and include the use of diamonds. You speak passionately about your love of Florence. What other cities do you have love affairs with? Is Vancouver on that list? At Stefano Ricci, we are proud to wear the Italian flag on our shoulders and the Florentine lily in our hearts. However, there are other international cities that I love, including Hong Kong, where we recently opened a monobrand to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our presence in China. (I remember that our very first boutique was inaugurated in 1993 in Shanghai, where today, we have our Shanghai Mansion). Los Angeles [is another favourite], where, not by chance, we have one of the most important flagship stores in the world on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The thing I immediately liked about Vancouver was the energy that this city emanates. There is a desire for action and an intensive investment that follows a bright vision. I think that in the next few years, Vancouver will affirm itself as one of the top cities in the world. Since the beginning of 2018, ultra-luxury brand Stefano Ricci has launched men’s wear boutiques in Phnom Penh, Hong Kong, Dubai (a third boutique) and Tbilisi. With another five slated (Sanya, Miami, New Delhi, Macau and Sochi), it appears that the world’s thirst for the ultimate in luxury apparel transcends borders. www.stefanoricci.com n

TASTE

Pa rti n g Shot

Deviant Desserts and Etiquettel Arts By Ryan Czech / ryan.czech@gmail.com

W

hat is 'taste' exactly? If I make a peanut butter and pickle sandwich and love it, does that make me tasteless? Even if I think it's delicious? If I'm at a dinner party on the top floor of one of Vancouver's most exquisite hotels and all the people around me take a hors d'oeuvre glistening with caviar from a passing platter, am I privileged and tasteful when I take a bite too? Even if I hate the quiver of it in my mouth? I wonder... where exactly is the line between other people's preferences and my own? Where class and classlessness collide. How important is it that I memorize the pairings of wine to go with fowl or a red sauce, and how dreadful a mistake it is if I should make a foul in front of my peers! If I want a glass of Shiraz with my phố, will I hang publicly for my crime against food? Taste is a rule book of luxury, that we may tell apart the premier from the populi – manners maketh the man after all, or so has been said for hundreds of years. But, was that the case before somebody said it? Or was it said because it was true all along and we were lucky enough to discover the real way of the world. What did we do before we said such phrases? Were men made from things other than manners? Mettle perhaps, or for all we know it was meringue. Is the test of civilization knowing which side of the bowl your soup spoon belongs to? We dirty our lips with deviant desserts and busy ourselves with etiquettel arts, endlessly in search of a life-affirming tart. Perhaps manners matter, and perhaps it matters naught. n
