Why I’m ready to celebrate this Chinese New Year IT’S THE YEAR OF THE PIG, AND I’M A RAT
C
By Lisa Manfield
hinese New Year falls on February 5 this year, and I’ll be doing my part to ring in the lunar new year with millions of other celebrants around the world. Why? Well, for one, I love having the opportunity to partake in new-tome traditions, food, and festivities. But there is another reason I’m particularly keen to celebrate this year: my Chinese horoscope tells me I’m about to have a pretty good year. In the tradition of Chinese astrology, my sign is the rat. People born in my particular rat year tend to be smart, strategic, and fairly lucky. And we love to socialize! And apparently there are ample reasons for me to socialize this year: 2019, the year of the pig, is looking to be particularly good for my sign: one marked, in part, by social engagements and prosperity. The coming year will be a transition year for us rats, as we prepare to celebrate our year in 2020. So 2019 will be a time to clear out the old and set new intentions for the coming several years. Opportunity abounds for us rats this year. And that’s one reason I’ll be eagerly toasting Chinese New Year. Chinese astrology, if you aren’t familiar, is based on 12year cycles; each year with an accompanying animal sign. The pig is the 12th sign in the cycle. Every sign will interact with the Year of the Pig in its own particular way, but overall, the Year of the Pig is predicted to be an auspicious year, as the pig typically attracts success. The year will be marked by happiness and a sense of ease. Search online for your specific horoscope to find out what 2019 will look like for your animal sign. Hopefully you will have reason to celebrate too!

Chinese New Year Traditions Horoscopes aside, Chinese New Year comes with many festivities and traditions that are fun, practical and auspicious. These include preparations for New Year’s Eve, which involves thoroughly cleaning the home (sweeping out the old, decluttering and making space for the new), getting a haircut, and decorating in red and gold. A lot of work is put into setting the stage for success throughout the year, and inviting good fortune into the home. New Year’s Eve — the most important part of New Year’s celebrations — is marked by family gatherings and feasting, and the handing out (or receiving, depending on your marital status) of red envelopes filled with money. Fireworks often take place on New Year’s Eve as well.
Enjoy Vancouver’s Extensive Celebrations Vancouver offers many opportunities to take part in a wide array of public Chinese New Year celebrations. Check out the Lunar New Year Festival (https://lunarfestival.com), an aggregation of events taking place throughout February in Vancouver and Richmond. You’ll find everything from lion and dragon dances, to cultural showcases, stage shows and parades. Happy Chinese New Year. ■

icis Jewels is proud to present its new "Universe" Collection: bracelets, earrings and rings made of gold, precious stones and elaborate micromosaic, jewels fun and easy to wear. The line is born from the collaboration with the known and estimated jewelry blogger Katerina Perez. She herself, admirer of the Sicis jewelry, wanted, together with the director of the Maison, to create special objects, spectacular in terms of workmanship refinement yet at the same time closer to everyday life. Butterflies, stars, lucky charms that can accompany us following the rhythm of our everyday adventures. ‘’Universe’’ is thought to rise curiosity on the treasurable art of micromosaic, combining the goldsmith's skills and the preciosity of the stones, giving life to jewels that can be worn on any occasion by those who love classic jewelry but also by who love eclectic jewelry full of glamour. The collection starts from 1,000 Euros to 3,000 Euros. www.sicis.com n

Vancouverites may have a soft spot for subdued neutrals—calming shades of blue, white, and grey are what commonly make up the city’s skyline, after all— but, this year, colour is in. And not just any colour: bold, unapologetic hues like key lime, fuchsia, and electric violet are invading the home through the introduction of saturated furnishings and accessories, lending living spaces a punch of playfulness and personality. “We came into 2018 thinking we were going to see a lot of ’90s-inspired, almost pastel or dusty colours,” says Albert Yee, sales-and-design consultant at Vancouver’s Livingspace. “And we saw that a little here and there, but—out of who knows where—high saturations and primary colours have become a big hit.” Vivid tints of burnt orange, aqua, and sunshine yellow dominate the outdoor-furnishing offerings from Italian line Paola Lenti, for instance, giving those with patios, decks, and other alfresco rooms a chance to have
24

some fun in an area that should be reserved for just that. At Livingspace’s Armoury District showroom, there are compact sofas, hand-woven armchairs, and even plush “seating islands” from the respected label— each drenched in deep plum and teal, among other shades, that scream sleek and “Miami cool”. There are even “high-tech” rugs—floor coverings crafted from Paola Lenti’s durable and weather-resistant yarns—that come in vibrant, scene-stealing patterns. Intimidated by the idea of incorporating a hot-pink lounge chair or Kelly-green rug into your space? Ease into the trend with statement-making accessories, like those from Pulpo’s Container range or Bitossi’s Nathalie Du Pasquier collection. The former features metallic, dual-toned vessels that may be used to hold flowers, incense sticks, or even sweets, while the latter is comprised of funky, geometric vases by the esteemed French designer it’s named after. Yee recommends letting these items be the star of the show on a countertop, credenza, or elsewhere. “Instead of a bunch of knickknacks on your shelf,” he suggests, “you’ve got one or two significant pieces that are bold.” n

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
LINCOLN HELLER
E
By Alfonso Arnold alfonso@alfonsoarnold.com
very month, Boulevard sends photographer and chief Alfonso Arnold to scan our wonderful city to find true and passionate artists to interview, snap, and feature. This month Alfonso visits the studio of Lincoln Heller, founder and designer of the handbag and accessory collection, FIVELEFT Leather. Boulevard: Welcome Lincoln to the Spotlight! Can you tell us a little bit of your background and history about you and your leather bags? Lincoln: passion for bags comes from a fascination with containers that carry the most personal items of our everyday. These vessels become our most functional and prominent accessory, and I love exploring the way we interact with them. My love for working with rigid leather comes from when I worked in an Alaskan logging camp. In the evenings I would stitch tool pouches from discarded boot leather. Here I learned to pinch and fold structural leather to bring form to my bags. Boulevard: Are you able to describe the process of how they are created to be environmentally conscious, and why it is so important that you design and manufacture them this way? Lincoln: The responsibility I feel I have to my community and the world has played a major role in navigating my life. So as this business progressed I made decisions that would have lasting positive impact. The vegetable tanned leather I use comes from a single reputable source, and the processes we employ, has been developed by this personal mission.

Boulevard: I know you are involved in quite a few events and boutiques that show and carry your collections. Can you fill us in on where we people can get first hand on seeing them. Lincoln: Fiveleft has had many different ways to find homes, and lately we have been focusing on where we have been most successful. Face to face and on our website seems to be where we make the most (and best) friends. So over the next few months you can find us in person at FIRST PICK HANDMADE at the Heritage Hall in Vancouver September 15-16, and in our studio for the Eastside Culture Crawl November 15-18. If you are far and away you can shop our website, and never be afraid to make an appointment to come by ask about workshops and custom orders. Boulevard: And finally…can you give us a hint on what is coming up on this amazing journey of yours? Lincoln: The future of Fiveleft is evolving in a new direction. I mentioned earlier I have always found the most success bringing leather goods directly to my clients, even if that means online. I think it is the interaction and building of real community that has been so satisfying. So I am moving away from trying to chase a production oriented model. In the new year we will be introducing some new materials, and collaborations with other gifted people is already in the works for next spring. Arriving at this level of mastery and getting older is proving to be a place where I can branch out and meet challenges that were unattainable before, and slowing down to look closely at the details is bringing new excitement to the practice I have already developed. Boulevard: Thank you so much Lincoln for taking the time to snap and chat. It was a pleasure and inspiration to visit your studio! n Visit FIVELEFT Leather online: www.fiveleft.ca Instagram: fiveleftleather · Facebook Page: @fiveleftleather

t’s a given that the annual BC Children’s Hospital Choices Lottery offers some lucky prospective ticket holder a spectacular Lower Mainland home as the Grand Prize. With each ensuing draw it seems that the dream homes offered simply rise to the next level. This year’s offering certainly maintains those standards; with a prize home boasting three floors, occupying just over 7200 square feet including a three car garage - a single and a double - complete with 14 foot ceilings that can easily accommodate a car lift. The property is located on a 13,000 square foot lot on 144th Street in the prestigious Elgin Park area of South Surrey, surrounded by old growth forest and carrying a list price of just over $2,800,000. Vic Sanghera, President and Owner of Red Tree Creative Homes constructed this year’s magnificent property; taking roughly about a year to build. “It’s a six bedroom; six and a half bathroom home; four rooms upstairs, all with an en-suite,” he says. “The feature upstairs though really is the Master Closet with 13 foot ceilings right in the middle of the room. The basement is designed to be a complete luxury retreat, offering a home gym, massage room, sauna, wine cellar; bar and pool table and there’s also a home library with a baby Grand Piano; dressed in maple-stained walls to really give it that classic library feeling.” That’s just the inside.
B O U L E VA R D
35
The exterior is equally impressive with a backyard water feature; a golf putting green, fire table in the middle of a covered sitting area and a hot tub pad. Sanghera is a repeat builder for the BC Children Hospital contributing his second creation, having also constructed two VGH/UBC Millionaire Lottery Homes, along with homes for both VGH/UBC Hometown Heroes and Variety; The Children’s Charity lotteries. While his company has constructed multiple properties along the way, Sanghera maintains
36

that each property’s design and construction remains unique for each project. When asked if he’s continually striving to set the bar higher with each ensuing project, Sanghera responds affirmatively. “The name of the company is Red Tree Creative Homes so we always look for something to go a bit beyond each time out. We’ve been building luxury homes for almost 14 years; primarily based in South Surrey but we’ve built in Richmond, Tsawwassen, Delta and White Rock.
HOM E
Since becoming a regular contributor to the dream home construction side of various hospital lottery foundations, Sanghera is thrilled to again do his part. “I am always honoured when Red Tree Creative Homes is asked to provide one of the Grand Prize options,” he says. “This particular campaign is important to the Children’s Foundation’s fundraising efforts in support of B.C. Children’s Hospital. I’m humbled and at the same time awestruck to know that I’ve had a small part in helping our Children’s Hospital to continue to provide vital, world class services to our community. The bonus is always seeing the faces of the lucky winner!” ■

s construction nears completion on the BC Children’s Hospital Lottery Prize Home, the interior design and décor becomes the major focus. It’s no small order for such an exquisite piece of real estate. Enter Sandra Hurtley of Positive Space Staging and Design Inc. “I am brought in approximately six to eight weeks prior to the home being open to the public,” Hurtley says, noting she stays actively involved with the builder throughout the process. “My goal is to make choices from a decor standpoint to really highlight the architecture and compliment the features of the house. This means that draperies, furniture and all décor’ have to be selected very quickly to meet the deadlines.
There are wonderful suppliers I work with and everyone works as a team to make it happen and work especially close with Valley Direct Furniture and Stylit Window Designs.” And much like the home building designs take a different look each and every time out, so too do the interiors. “Most definitely”, she adds emphatically. “In my line of work I see a lot of gorgeous homes - but this home stands out. To me it is timeless in its formal, yet livable design. There is such an elegance to the front parlour, dining room and library. The great room has massive high ceilings and the kitchen is a chef ’s dream (and probably one of my favorite features); the walk in closet in the master bedroom is also just incredible! The inspiration for this 7200 square foot; multi level; six bedroom/6.5 bathroom home, she sums up as, “Glam in the Master Bedroom, elegance in the Dining Room and Library and quality, livable lifestyle throughout. The style of the house leans traditional, so the furniture and decor are transitional - nothing too modern. I choose soft colours with a bit of sparkle.”

It’s a role she’s played many times prior since forming Positive Space Staging and Design eight years ago; with a focus on staging and having provided her services to mainly vacant show homes along with numerous interior design projects. “I worked with the lottery and the builder, Vic Sanghera of Red Tree Creative Homes last year on the house next door for the Millionaire Lottery,” says Hurtley. “Prior to the current house being chosen for
the Choices Lottery he had hired me to stage the home that is the Grand Prize, so I am very familiar with this house. Once it was chosen as the lottery Grand Prize, we changed out almost everything to create with a new concept. I have worked with the lottery since 2015 and have styled more than 14 lottery prize homes! I love what I do and feel so fortunate to work on such amazing projects.” ■

s Manager of Marketing for Brian Jessel BMW, Diana Zoppa faces a litany of duties; sometimes extending beyond the everyday, ongoing brand awareness support behind Canada’s highest volume BMW dealer. Chief among them is the organization of ‘Cabriolet’; the annual celebratory gala, staged on the sprawling premises of the lavish Boundary Road dealership. Throughout the years, ‘Cabriolet’ has become among Vancouver’s elite, premiere events; benefitting multiple charities in the early going before solely dedicating itself to an ongoing fundraising initiative for Pancreatic Cancer. ‘This will be my 6th Cabriolet’ Gala,” says Zoppa, who boasts a diverse and impressive background in the area of Marketing and Public Relations that dates back to 1991.
“We changed the format of ‘Cabriolet’ after the first four events….we were following the same format from the past, which was the original car launch, expanded into fashion show, expanded into party; trying to raise money for small charities,” she adds of the yearly starstudded event. “The first nine years of ‘Cabriolet’ benefitted assorted charities; everyone from Canadian Breast Cancer to Arts Umbrella and every year they selected a different recipient. ‘The ‘Cabriolet’ Gala initially started as a stand-up style cocktail party affair with food and drinks – we’d sell tickets and have all the restaurants involved. When I came into the picture in 2014 we did the launch for the i8; which was the year that the electric cars came out for BMW and we did an Haute Couture Fashion Show; and a number of elements involved - it was very big.
That was the first year that Brian Jessel and Managing Partner Jim Murray committed to Pancreatic Cancer. After Brian’s father passed away he became dedicated to raising awareness for this cause; which takes a disproportionate amount of people annually; only offering a 7% chance of survival upon diagnosis. “When we started Cabriolet many years ago, like many other people we wanted to fight cancer and be part of the solution,” adds Jessel. “In 2010 I lost my father to pancreatic cancer so our fundraising became a lot more personal and over the last few years it’s been sad to see how many friends and clients have died from it. It is nasty and deadly and 95% of those that get this disease pass on within a year.” Fourteen years later, Brian Jessel BMW’s annual ‘Cabriolet’ gala has now raised in excess of $2 Million. “This is a big undertaking as Brian and Jim make the decision to basically give up the dealership for this event,” says Zoppa. 46
B O U L E VA R D
“What makes ‘Cabriolet’ so special is that it’s like a pop-up party - in a sense - because it’s not held in a hotel ballroom. It takes place in a huge, gorgeous dealership that gets transformed into a themed evening. In 2018 we changed the concept to become a seated, corporate event with 40 high-top tables all draped in the themed décor of Cabaret”. While previous events have undertaken various themes, this year’s ‘Cabriolet Gala’ takes place on April 6 with a Moroccan twist; based on Rick’s Café, the fictional bar made famous in the 1942 Humphrey Bogart/Ingrid Bergman classic drama, ‘Casablanca’. ‘Cabriolet’ galas have brought together a variety of charitable initiatives along with local and international celebrities to the spacious showroom; magically transformed from car dealership by day to a veritable oasis by night and boasting a list of top-tier entertainment over the years that has included such notables as Jay Leno, Cee Lo Green and Barenaked Ladies.

A luxurious wilderness weekend at Sonora Resort
By Kelly Bai Photography courtesy Sonora Resort
U
p until Friday at noon, I was still anxiously busy, hurrying to complete the October edition of Boulevard. Then, I packed a simple bag and drove to the airport’s south terminal, where a helicopter awaited.
As the large propeller spun, the helicopter rose into the air. The city looked like a sand box and drifted farther and farther away. Lush forests and the majestic ocean appeared under my feet. Anxious and hectic feelings receded as the city drifted away beneath me. I relaxed, knowing that a comfortable and wonderful weekend was about to unfold.

Sonora Resort is like a secret paradise in the midst of the wilderness. Ferries cannot get here, only helicopters, floatplanes and water taxis…
After a 50-minute flight, the helicopter landed at Sonora Resort. This 5-star resort was built on Sonora Island in 1954, with half a century’s worth of history. The island is one of many located in the BC Discovery Islands, its name coming from a Spanish schooner that explored the Pacific Northwest in 1775. Sonora Resort is like a secret paradise in the midst of the wilderness. Ferries cannot get here, only helicopters, floatplanes and water taxis, further underlining its otherworldly, mysterious feel. Several small West Coast style buildings stood by the water. The guest rooms were comfortable and cosy, and the beautiful view beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows takes only a minute to steal away your heart. Upon entering, I immediately sank into the sofa facing the window and did not want to move again. Beyond the glass sat the beautiful Bute Inlet. The waters churned rapidly, a continuous stretch of mountains could be seen in the distance, and forest-heavy islands seemed to float in the water. Wild and undeveloped, the area is isolated and gives the feeling of being surrounded by dense nature. The stool in front of the sofa held a pair of binoculars for looking at faraway forests, mountains, seagulls and sea animals. Just like that, I sat idly until dinnertime when I went to the resort’s Tyee Dining Room. (Tyee is an ancient First Nations word meaning big salmon.) The views outside the big glass window here were even more expansive, and I watched the sun set upon a far away mountain, a shade of red flooding the sky and illuminating the beauty of this wilderness island. Inside the Tyee, on the dining table, sat an equally pleasing sight: fresh raw oysters, tender veal, lamb rack, caviar and mullet slices, scallops and mussels, and baked salmon. Every dish was fresh and tasty, especially the salmon.
52

I’m sometimes reluctant to order salmon, which is often rendered tasteless. However, here, the salmon was perfect: fresh and tender, rich and flavourful. Furthermore, a thin layer of beet puree was carefully spread on top. If it weren’t for the server’s recommendation, I would have missed this course entirely. Waking up late on Saturday morning, I hurriedly finished my breakfast and headed towards the resort’s Island Currents Spa for a massage treatment. This hydrotherapy centre is equipped with indoor dry sauna and steam sauna rooms, along with outdoor hot and cold mineral water pools. The dressing table in the changing room offered top Swiss brand Valmont body lotion, so luxury is evident here. Most of the products used for facial treatments were also Valmont, but on this occasion, I chose a Coastal Beach Stone Massage rather than a facial.
Guest rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with breaktaking views of Bute Inlet. The resort‘s Tyee Dining Room served up fresh raw oysters along with a spectacular water view.

There’s nothing more relaxing than a comfortable full body massage. Hot stones from local beaches were placed on my spine, and the heat gave off a comfortable sensation. The therapist’s gentle and capable hands pushed the soft stones along the body, as tense and aching muscles slowly relaxed. My brain let go and all thoughts concentrated on the effects of finger pressure and stones on muscles. Sleep slowly began to sink in again. After the 90-minute massage, I felt refreshed and relaxed. In the afternoon, I boarded a boat and joined the Eco Adventure Tour to view marine wildlife. The Discovery Islands are home to many of the Pacific’s wildlife. We boarded the 12-passenger, 28-foot Eagle Master inflatable zodiac (which goes up to 40 nautical miles per hour) and zipped among the islands on the wide-open waters. Bald eagles and herons soared overhead, while hundreds of water birds took off as our boat zoomed by, blocking the sun. The isolated islands were silent except for the chatter of birds, highlighting the serenity of the setting. Moving further along, stellar sea lions, Dall’s porpoises and Pacific white-sided dolphins appeared in swarms. At times, they twisted and turned in the water looking for food, as their rounded backs suddenly appeared on the surface of the water. Other times, they lifted their heads to swim, carefree and innocent. The boat was equipped with headphones, used as the guide introduced us to all sorts of wildlife and the islands. If lucky, one can also see orcas, but unfortunately it wasn’t so for us this time around. Upon return, we headed to dinner. That night, we ordered the Chef’s Menu: a five course meal with wine pairings. Young chef Lukas Gurtner designed these menus based on seasonality and the day’s catch, so they are different every night. The menu included the following: Foie Gras Terrine paired with wild mushrooms, Pumpkin Seed Pesto
54
B O U L E VA R D
Tortellini with truffle and consommé, Puff Pastry with hazelnut and feta cheese, Ravioli made with local smoked white mullet paired with Parma ham, mushrooms and caviar. Finally, for dessert was a Pale Green Basil Sponge Cake paired with cherries and oranges. On top of all these, there were also two small appetizers and petit fours. The cuisine was full of creativity. Not only was the presentation like works of art, the taste was delicious. Also remarkable were the wine pairings, featuring some of BC’s best vintages. In addition to local offerings, Sonora Resort serves a wide selection of other wines, including the best red wines from California, classics from Bordeaux or old vintages from Tuscany. Waking up early on Sunday, I boarded a boat before 8 am to see brown bears at Orford River. The vessel motored along the Bute Inlet, crossing through the Arran and Yuculta rapids, and headed towards the Orford River along BC mainland’s southwest coast. After
50 minutes, we landed disembarked and boarded a bus. Under the direction of a Homalco First Nations guide, we crisscrossed the moss-ridden rainforest, looking for brown bears. Every autumn, brown bears come to the mouth of the Orford River hunting salmon, making this a great time to see them. Our luck was good and not long after being on the road, our guide discovered traces of the bears. Although we had yet to reach the tower designated for bear viewing, our guide stopped the car and we got off, standing on the side of the river. A brown bear walked along in the river towards us, head down looking for food. As he passed, he looked at us curiously. With only a small slope separating us from the bear, our guide

gathered us behind him. However, the bear did not show any interest in us and continued his walk, finding food amongst the rocks. The guides later told us that an encounter so close is quite rare. In the few hours that followed, we arrived at several bearviewing towers built along the Orford River and saw a total of 16 brown bears. Some of the bears were in the river, catching their favourite food. This was my first time seeing bears swim and they’re quite agile in the water, like professional swimmers. Some came in groups along the river bank, walking along the wooden planks. Some lazily rested in the forest along the river, as if they had already eaten their fill. The bears in the Orford River wilderness appeared relaxed and carefree, seeming more fun-loving and vibrant. It was the first time in my life I had seen so many bears, especially in such an amazing environment! All of the guests were amazed and relished this rare experience. A light rain began to fall. The zigzag of the Orford River complemented the dense forests, bringing out the beauty of the wilderness. After watching bears eat for an entire morning, we began to feel hungry too. Returning to the resort, we tucked into another big meal. Every meal was satisfying, and like everything else at the resort, it was an unforgettable experience. In the days that followed, I relished the wonderful memories gathered from my weekend trip. The photos and video clips that I have posted on social media also garnered a lot of interest from friends. I believe it won’t be long before we all join together to come back again. â–

ith the advances in medical care that have occurred in the last 100 years people’s life expectancy has increased in developed countries as well as in underdeveloped countries, particularly where there has been impact on the control of infectious disease.

... should there be an age limit in the area of reproduction? Donor eggs are also more available and now surrogacy is becoming more into focus for individuals other than as an option predominantly for women with medical reasons who cannot carry a pregnancy. With these changes and advances come the potential for individuals to have a child well beyond years previously considered the “norm by using donor gametes and surrogacy.

Are there indeed greater advantages in being a new parent in one’s 50’s and 60’s? For individuals in their 50s and 60s contemplating assisted conception using gamete donation and surrogacy, there can be challenges and uncertainties related to their own circumstances beyond medical and scientific capability. Until clearer social guidelines emerge, careful consideration needs to be given to how well one is able to anticipate and provide for the long term needs of the offspring.
“Delayed childbearing however is an established trend and some individuals are creating families in midlife and beyond. Scientific advances often precede social, ethical and moral analysis. For individuals in their 50s and 60s contemplating assisted conception using gamete donation and surrogacy, there can be challenges and uncertainties related to their own circumstances beyond medical and scientific capability.” ■ Note: The Office for National Statistics indicated the births to women over 50yrs quadrupled from 53 in 2001 to 218 in 2016.

The new showroom showcases Palladio’s love of cutting-edge design, and aims to combine its “passion for perfection” with topnotch client service. Stepping inside the new showroom, clients might be immediately transfixed by the sheer magnificence of the space. Inspired by the idea of a precious jewellery box, the interior creates an exclusive shopping experience that showcases — like a jewellery box — the store’s precious products. Interior finishes blend the rich warmth of wood with white and gold Calacatta marble imported from Italy. Bronze metal accents feature a repeating pattern of the Palladio “P,” reminiscent of links in a bracelet. And great care has been taken to respect the history and pedigree of the Palladio brand; the design is classic and timeless, but leverages new technology in lighting and highclarity display glass to optimize presentation of merchandise. There’s a timeless elegance in the design, and yet the modern mastery is captivating. ambling is not a hobby of mine but while driving along Highway 1, I always notice the iconic structure of the Grand Villa Casino Hotel. During a recent visit, I was captivated by this spacious three-level casino and its food and beverage outlets. Other than the buffets that seem to be everywhere and the fusion Asian cuisine, this casino recently welcomed restaurant chain Atlas Steak+Fish, which also has outlets in Edmonton and Kamloops. Atlas Steak+Fish is located on the second floor entrance, away from the busy casino floor, allowing diners to dine away from the noises and bright lights of the casino. The entrance leads to a private dining room that offers live piano accompaniment. The room under the vaulted roof is lined with tall glass wine cabinets on two sides, highlighting the restaurant’s seriousness and attention to detail when choosing its wines. Side-by-side seats lined against the wall remind one of the classic setup of steakhouses. The size of the restaurant is surprising — from the open floor plan to a private dining room encased by glass, it can easily handle dinner parties large and small. Imagine a family with its young and old, sitting at the long table for an intimate and heartwarming family dinner. Much attention has also been paid to the restaurant’s décor. From the frosted glass ceiling hang brass lamp holders of different sizes and frosted globe lamps, transporting diners to the ’70s. Food and Beverage Manager Sylvain Cuerrier and General Manager Richard Goodine are working together to bring a
modern flair to this iconic restaurant. Different from celebrity-chef led Las Vegas restaurants that do molecular cuisine and Michelin-star-rated menus, Atlas Steak+Fish brings out the best in its ingredients by going back to the basics. It even uses retro dishes to create classics. The open kitchen is complemented with hanging copper lamps perfectly paired with the Spanish wood-burning grill used for preparing the main dishes. I am also quite fond of the restaurant’s tableside service. Whether it be the carefully prepared Caesar salad (the embellishment of anchovies is perfect as is the authentic mayonnaise) or the passionately displayed Baked Alaska (baked ice cream meringue: raspberry and coconut milk ice cream with lemon sorbet and Italian meringue), everything is a joy to behold. Atlas Steak+Fish serves top quality beef, including Alberta Angus Reserve, a 48 ounce Tomahawk steak from the famous Snake Rivers Farm and Nicola Valley’s Double R Ranch farms. On my visit, I happily wolfed down a large portion of the perfectly seasoned 16-ounce roasted cattle rib paired with simple roasted asparagus. Most memorable of all was the two-person portion seafood grill platter that consisted of lobster tail, Alaskan king crab, Monterey Bay squid, prawns and delicious tempura soft shell crab. This is a wonderful addition to Burnaby’s hotel restaurant scene: simple and plentiful fresh ingredients that allow diners to enjoy fully the leisure and comfort of dining, whether it’s for casual gatherings, family parties or special meals. n B O U L E VA R D

Dosanko Restaurant
Stellar Japanese Food
Written by Nathan Fong Photography Michael Chicoine
ituated in the city’s historic once vibrant Japantown, Dosanko is the welcoming and homestyle restaurant from the husband and wife team of Nathan and Akiyo Lowey. Chef Nathan worked previously in the award-winning Campagnola and its sister Campagnola Roma in East Vancouver. Sapporo born Akiyo ran front-of-house at the renowned Tojo’s and ShuRaku Bar and Bistro. This cozy 45-seat Powell Street front location, has once seen more glorious days in the now somewhat sketchy low-income neighbourhood, but with gentrification slowly happening with new restaurants, cafes, offices and breweries emerging, the area will have a renaissance in the hopefully near future. The kitchen in Dosanko serves slightly refined Japanese yoshoku, comfortable homestyle menu items such as traditional onigiri (grilled rice balls with various fillings) and donburi (rice bowls) to cheesy milk toast, fried rice omelettes and crisp succulent panko-breaded tonkatsu (pork cutlets). 78

Unlike the many izakayas and ramen shops in Vancouver, don’t expect gyozas (although there are other upscale Izakaya plates offered) and steaming bowls of soup noodles but comfort food you’ll expect to see in one of my Japanese sansei (3rd generation) friends home cooking where western and eastern culinary cultures have bonded creating unique cross culture dishes. Many of these favourites were cultivated and introduced to Japan after the US Navy arrived in the mid-19th century. Being close to the Japanese-language school just down the block, the weekends are brimmed with Japanese locals while during the week, a steady hipster and fashionable crowd from the nearby fashion and design offices fill the tables. Their onigiri rice balls vary from a wonderful Spicy Tataki of Albacore tuna, lightly kissed on a grill and garnished with a spicy mayo and nori sauce, influenced with Lowry’s housemade Kojisalt, to Chicken Karaage (marinated fried chicken) to Rich oily shredded mackerel with miso and green onions. A play with our West Coast ingredients include a lovely Ling Cod Kastsu Don, morsel of golden panko crusted orbs with shiso tartar sauce over steaming quality Tamanishiki rice. An ubiquitous favourite, Tempura features seasonal produce enrobed in a delicate, crispy golden batter dipped in ponzu or kojisalt. I particularly enjoyed having sweet raw beets contrasting with the delicate savoury casings. Or their Japanese styled Okara Hamburg, a luscious minced pork and beef patty with okara smothered with a sublime demi-sauce to the unique Curry-rice, the yellow slightly sweet-aromatic curry sauce (thanks to British introduction in the 1870’s) enrobed with pork, vegetables and garnished with cheese and pickles. Dosanko has brought light to this fledging Downtown Eastside neighbourhood and with it stellar Japanese comfort food at its best. Certainly one of my favourite new picks for 2019! ■

s Vancouver continues to mature and evolve, so too do the myriad of entertainment and amusement options available within our West Coast jewel. Like a tired old bumper sticker, the moniker of ‘No-Funcouver’ has burdened this fair city for far too long. Happily, this disparaging label is finally beginning to fray and peel. Instrumental to this change is the emergence of a new attitude in Vancouverites. With the shared successes of our City, has come a more positive frame of mind. We as a populous have endured the epoch of drudgery and tedium associated with dragging Vancouver to the next level. The rewards for this effort are now abundant and available to all. Res ipsa loquitur….Vancouver’s natural setting speaks for itself and always has. Through financial investment and environmentally sensitive development, we have now grown our infrastructure to the point were we can easily access and enjoy these attributes. We have nuanced the natural with the development of new and world class dining and entertainment venues. These assets reflect an increasing appetite for fun, excitement and adventure. The response to these experiences is a

recognition of and appreciation for the changing milieu. While some continue to reflexly default to the negative, increasingly this pattern is changing to one of awareness. An awareness that this is a new time in Vancouver and that this new time brings with it a corresponding new set of positive opportunities. The cultural scene in Vancouver is thriving. The spectrum extends from indigenous to rainbows, from art galleries to brew pubs. Each and every neighbourhood percolates its own dynamic and signature statement. Each a wonderful reflection of the whole. It is a truism that temperaments can be contagious. There is a synergy as positive encounters positive. The net result is greater than the sum of the component parts. More and more do these attitudes seek out and reinforce each other. As we stop and look, so then do we begin to appreciate the magnitude of the attitudinal shift that is upon us. Very exciting times indeed. Don’t look now, but Vancouver is becoming a very fun place to live, to work in, and most importantly, to enjoy. ■ Leeta Liepins leanwithleeta@outlook.com
