F
By Lisa Manfield
rom the day we’re born we crave recognition: a proud smile from our parents, a pat on the back from our teacher, a gold medal from our coach, a promotion from our boss. Awards and recognition validate our efforts and make us feel good.
That is, of course, why awards programs are so rampant in workplaces, in schools, and in extracurricular pursuits. But perhaps none are more publicly lauded than the Oscar Awards. Drawing a global audience of over 30 million people, the Oscars recognize film industry professionals for their achievements during an annual three-hour internationally televised ceremony, not to mention extensive red-carpet coverage and post-event analysis. But winning an Oscar doesn’t make or break an actor. In fact, many actors commonly considered to be A-listers have never won an Oscar, despite numerous nominations. This includes the likes of Brad Pitt, Jake Gyllenhaal, Johnny Depp, Sigourney Weaver, Amy Adams, and even Glenn Close, who holds the record for the most nominations received (seven) without winning. Does the lack of a golden statue diminish their accomplishments as actors? Certainly not. Do they feel short-changed by the lack of recognition from the Academy? Quite possibly. And yet, they continue to do good work.
Of course not everyone is motivated by awards. Some are extrinsically motivated, meaning they’re driven by the possibility of attention and recognition from others, others intrinsically motivated, meaning they do what they do for their own personal satisfaction.
Not All Awards are Rewarding While awards can legitimize talent and open doors of opportunity, they can also cause damage. In the school system, for example, some argue that awards systems have been used so extensively as to become meaningless. When kids are continuously given awards just for showing up, it creates the illusion that everyone is a winner without any effort. And in the real world, we all know that is far from true. The majority of us aren’t award winners, and that’s ok. It doesn’t mean we aren’t talented. It doesn’t mean we don’t try hard. And it doesn’t prevent us from doing our best day and in day out. While recognition is nice, the true honour is in getting to do something that is meaningful. As they say, hard work is its own reward, and it’s an honour just to be nominated. n
The Psychology Behind Awards When it comes to fostering the motivation to work hard, accomplish goals, and be successful, studies have shown that awards can be very effective. Recognition of efforts and contributions often motivates employees more than raises and bonuses. Executives, too, crave awards (and raises, and bonuses), but if the awards don’t come, they often turn to other pursuits that offer visibility and recognition, such as new ventures or company acquisitions.

LUXU RY
HEIR LOOM H EAV E N alladio has long been revered in Vancouver for its originality and design excellence in creating unique, trendsetting jewellery. And with a new showroom recently opened at 900 West Hastings Street, Vancouverites have a greater opportunity to get to know this jeweller’s fine craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind offerings. The new showroom showcases Palladio’s love of cutting-edge design, and aims to combine its “passion for perfection” with topnotch client service. Stepping inside the new showroom, clients might be immediately transfixed by the sheer magnificence of the space. Inspired by the idea of a precious jewellery box, the interior creates an exclusive shopping experience that showcases — like a jewellery box — the store’s precious products. Interior finishes blend the rich warmth of wood with white and gold Calacatta marble imported from Italy. Bronze metal accents feature a repeating pattern of the Palladio “P,” reminiscent of links in a bracelet. And great care has been taken to respect the history and pedigree of the Palladio brand; the design is classic and timeless, but leverages new technology in lighting and high-clarity display glass to optimize presentation of merchandise. There’s a timeless elegance in the design, and yet the modern mastery is captivating. Once inside, a world of inspiration awaits, with stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces for men and women, as well as fashionforward collections from sought-after designers around the world. ■

If you want to see one of the most interesting ‘Starbucks’ locations in the world, all you need to do is Google the words ‘Kengo Kuma’ and ‘Starbucks’. You will quickly find pictures of a unique store that look like a pile of matchsticks caught in the middle of an explosion. Built in Japan in 2008, it now one of a few locations that the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed for the coffee giant. Another interesting one in Taiwan is made from 29 recycled shipping containers, and yet another is in Vancouver’s Shaw Tower.

The Kengo Kuma Fazioli grand piano took over a year to build and cost USD 890,000.
eading Canadian real estate developer Westbank Corp, who originally developed the Shaw Tower, recently commissioned Kengo Kuma to design a new building for them at 1550 Alberni Street – and the plans called for custom piano to be designed for the lobby. Kengo Kuma, who is known for creating unique skyscrapers – not designing coffee shops – was intrigued by the opportunity to design the case of the piano. Once designed, it would be built by Fazioli Pianoforti in Italy – who is widely accepted as the finest piano maker in the world. The final design of their piano case uses 40 planed of beveled Hinoki wood – the same wood used for many of the building’s wooden elements. The wood of the piano case is sculptured to capture the look and feel of the building’s
exterior, a look that is echoed in many of Kuma’s buildings. In Japan, Hinoki wood is widely used and highly revered for its straight and uniform grain, which is a desirable quality for the piano manufacturing process. Kuma’s team handed the designs over to Fazioli’s team in Italy, whose team of 60 people faced the challenge of turning drawings into reality. What is now called the ‘Kengo Kuma Fazioli’ was shipped to Vancouver by air and unveiled at the ‘Unwritten’ Exhibition at Oakridge Centre. Fazioli Pianoforti founder Paolo Fazioli visited the exhibit on the 30th of January, 2019, and greeted local Fazioli piano owners and fans at a Cocktail event in his honour. ■

A HOME as a Work of
Art
LIVING IS EASIER in a beautifully designed home By Sheri Radford
It’s often been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that’s as true in home design as it is in fine art—each person has a different idea of where beauty lies. Similar to an attractive piece of art, a beautiful home is satisfying on both an aesthetic and an emotional level, soothing and delighting in equal measure. Whether for a home-renovation project or a new build, a construction company should be chosen carefully, since a well-designed home has positive effects on all of its inhabitants. Kerr Construction strives to build the perfect home for each client, working hard to pinpoint which design details will make the owner happiest on a daily basis. Each client requires a unique solution, because each client’s needs, wants, and tastes are different. Kerr Construction understands that each home needs to be an attractive place, wholly suited to the client’s specific lifestyle, whether that means a focus on accommodating children, hosting family functions, entertaining guests, or simply resting and recharging. Right from the initial design stage, Kerr Construction takes aesthetics into account, in order to create a dream home for each client. A gorgeous living environment sparks joy and helps to reduce stress. A lovely home is a sanctuary, a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world at the end of a long workday. As a bonus, a beautifully designed home has a higher resale value. Prospective buyers might not be able to pinpoint why, exactly, they love a well-designed home, but they feel drawn to it. ■ 30

Modern Alpine architecture with extensive use of local basalt and dark-stained woods blends with forested, mountainside setting. Inside this 8,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom home, the theme of natural materials continues while introducing a crisp, contemporary minimalism through use of marble, glass, and metallic finishes. The glass-encased livingroom’s 14-foot ledgestone fireplace with castconcrete surround is the focal point, with four 10-foot glass-sliders on facing walls all room to transition to a covered “breezeway”, connecting patio/lounge (west-facing) and courtyard (south-facing, overlooking ski run) with built-in hot-tub - because soaking after a day on the slopes is part the Whistler lifestyle.

with Peter Verge, her former Dream Homes co-host, she is co-hosting Luxury Hunters on DIRECTV, the top satellite TV service in the US. “Luxury Hunters takes a fun, lighthearted look at luxury, with a focus on design,” says Bianca, who was a driving force in the show’s development. “And we try to make it as experiential for the audience as we can.” Bianca and Peter take turns giving the audience a tour of the home, typically in the double-digit million dollar category, and then viewers tweet their preference to determine the favourite. “It’s not your typical renovate-and-reveal show, and we really wanted to break away from the standard three-judges format.” It may sound like a cushy job, but it’s challenging to find homeowners who are willing to open their doors to a TV crew and expose their homes to a vast viewing audience. need to be different from each other and have a distinct “wow factor” all their own. “There isn’t just one luxury lifestyle,” Bianca said. “As I move toward Season 2, I’ve been increasingly focused on the green luxury ‘wow factor’ – features like rainwater irrigation, a Tesla power panel – or high technology features like keyless fingerprint entry.” Luxury Hunters was shot entirely in 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range), a cutting-edge technology requiring
sophisticated new camera equipment, colour work and other newly developed skills. Bianca learned this specialized new technology on her feet as she put together a crew, led the production team and acted as co-host. She devoted three months of 14-hour days running the show and did what it took to get it right. Besides all the technical challenges, there was an ongoing creative urgency to keep hitting the right note, a fine balance between information and humour. Bianca is a roll-up-your-sleeves kind of woman, who basically ran the show.

Sophisticated Style in Yaletown Written by Lin Stranberg

his month’s cover location is a gorgeous Yaletown loft conversion that epitomizes contemporary urban style, full of sophisticated, design-forward elements and innovative touches. The loft is in a restored heritage building, a former warehouse originally constructed in 1928. It’s just been freshly renovated by Greater Vancouver’s Troico Home Solutions, based in Vancouver and Coquitlam, and what a great job they did! The loft, close to everything in the heart of Yaletown, has authentic heritage architectural details like massive rough-cut fir beams, exposed concrete walls and over-height ceilings. The challenge was to combine them with the cuttingedge design and décor elements the owner envisioned. “We love this kind of work,” said Michael Richter, Troico’s owner. “We’re particularly proud of the innovative new products we were able to use as part of the project. For example, the cabinet material is a raw distressed wood product from Belgium that we used for the first time, and it turned out to be excellent. We’ll absolutely use it again. We used concrete-coloured quartz to harmonize with the exposed concrete in the space. Concrete is porous and quartz is much easier for ongoing maintenance – spills and that sort of thing.
“

“We’re really proud of the custom touches we included to make this renovation a success. So much of the product selection was one-of-a-kind and specific to this unusual space, like the colour matching we did for the beams. This type of higherend, design-forward custom project serves as a valuable research and development resource that we can then apply to our midrange projects.” Troico’s innovations soon become part of their standard product offering on the more typical jobs they do, like standard condos and single-or multifamily homes .“The early adopters pave the way to the mainstream,” Michael said. B O U L E VA R D

With their own electrical, plumbing, kitchen and bathroom units as well as the custom cabinetry and fine millwork done by Troico Manufacturing, they have taken in-house capabilities to the max. They have a dedicated staff of award-winning designers and accomplished tradespeople. Michael told us that several cost-plus contractors in the area have tried to emulate them, but they arrived at fixed pricing first and have managed to refine it over many years and hundreds of projects. “We pioneered the fixed pricing process,” Michael said, “and we do almost everything in-house except for highly specialized trade work, like railings or garage doors. That enables us to exert better control over the project. We need to be responsive and we can’t do that when we’re subcontracting. There are simply no provisions for overages! Our systems keep us on-budget and our in-house staff helps get the project completed on time.” The Yaletown reno was a bespoke job, yet we’re confident this award-winning group takes pride in bringing the same level of quality and innovation to all their projects, including the projects they take on during their biannual promotional periods. Troico promotions are on in spring and fall every year from April 1 – June 30 and September 1 – November 30. For more information or to take advantage of the promotions: www.troico.ca

ith over 330 days of sunshine every year, Scottsdale, Arizona beckons with its steady, heady heat. During Hollywood’s golden era, Scottsdale was a natural extension to the playground of the stars, drawing the likes of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, who favoured hotel lounges and poolside parties. Decades later, “snowbirds” - mostly Canadians escaping cold winters - and retirees discovered this nearby paradise with its sunny, semi-arid climate and dramatic palm-lined boulevards. Coming full circle, Scottsdale has once again piqued the interest of celebrities, with sightings of Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Jennifer Aniston frequently being reported. The main draw this time? Spas. This is spa country. The Greater Phoenix area (including Scottsdale) has over 400,000 sq. ft of dedicated spa space. Many of these luxury spas and resorts routinely top every American and international “best of” spa list. Combined with a magnificent food scene and the

charming, warm Southwest aesthetic, Scottsdale is becoming a top destination for those seeking some serious pampering. When planning your trip, keep in mind this area is in the Sonoran Desert - it’s hot. Peak season is usually from November through March. But if soaring temperatures don’t bother you, coming in the summer will fetch you a great deal as many resorts reduce prices dramatically during this period. Golf carts are a given at these expansive properties, so don’t worry, you’ll never be out in the open sun longer than you choose to. Bring your bathing suit to your spa treatment and plan on going early and staying late to make the most of the spectacular amenities at these luxury resorts.

The profile is relatively low-level upon arriving, with the golf course across from the main building. But once you wind your way to your casita, the enormous boulders are centre stage. The impact leaves you feeling both humbled, thrilled and exhilaratingly carefree. Boulders is one of the very few resorts in the US that has a dedicated, private Watsu pool (starting at US$190 for 50 min). one DIALOGU E
This restaurant speakeasy is located on the second
floor of a shopping mall food hall in Santa Monica. Obscure, odd and outstanding!
Expectations were high for James Beard Award winner chef Dave Beran’s first 18-seat, tasting-menu-only restaurant since he was previously chef de cuisine at the renowned Alinea and executive chef of Next in Chicago. While Dialgue is simply enjoyable as a restaurant, it’s so much more interesting knowing the concept. Luckily, the chef and staff are engaging and the experience interactive. Dialogue is not just the name, it is actually taking place. The menu showcases three seasons (in this case, end of summer, autumn and looking towards winter), and is inspired by Californian terroir and memories of the chef’s childhood in Michigan. The progression of his menu is specific. There is always one ingredient transitioning over to the next dish, and only one dish which will make it onto the next menu (four menus a year). two SOMNI
Located inside the SLS hotel
in Beverly Hills is chef José Andrés and chef Aitor Zabala’s new 10-seat private dining restaurant. Although positioned inside another restaurant The Bazaar, the kitchens are run completely separate. Somni features a 25-course, tasting-menu-only counter and tickets have to be prepurchased online. Chef Zabala transports his diners to Spain with Catalonian and Spanish influences throughout the menu. Molecular gastronomy is used heavily here, but don’t let that turn you off. It’s done extremely well with almost every course being better than the last, and the last was delicious. The presentation is playful, and signature dishes like his “caviar bump” served on a wooden hand are meant to be fun. He pushes boundaries and challenges all that is traditional.

three VESPERTINE
If Somni is wild, then Vespertine is out of this world — literally.
In the middle of warehouses and nothingness in Culver City sits chef Jordan Kahn’s 22-seat tasting-menu-only restaurant. It’s a supernatural dining experience probably closest to Ultraviolet in Shanghai. It’s eccentric, wild and polarizing — almost exactly what one expects from LA. It is a must-try for avante garde fine dining in North America. The 20-something course tasting menu is no “farm-to-table” or predictable “Californian cuisine” — it’s completely different. It’s interesting, unpredictable, at times simultaneously odd and delicious, and at others, again, polarizing. I’ll say no more because it’s best to keep you wondering with this one. ■

CELEBRATING AT THE VANCOUVER OPERA FESTIVAL The Vancouver Opera is the second largest opera company in Canada and is regarded worldwide for its mainstage productions, country-leading education programs and innovative community partnerships. The growing success of the Vancouver Opera Festival presented by BMO, now in its third year, strives to redefine “opera” welcoming audiences of all ages, near and far. This year’s Festival is from April 27 to May 5 and features two spectacular mainstage productions and a series of engaging special events and family programming, all celebrating fairytales and fables from around the world. The nine-day Festival is anchored by two mainstage opera productions, Faust and La Cenerentola. Charles Gounod’s Faust is full of rich characterization, dramatically exciting, and it’s exuberantly evocative. Not to be overshadowed is Gioachino Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella), an enduring ragsto-riches story that never goes out of style. ■

Brian Current’s THE RIVER OF LIGHT May 5 @ 2:00 p.m. Queen Elizabeth Theatre Sung in French with English SURTITLESTM
Charles Gounod’s FAUST Gounod’s Faust is the pinnacle of 19th century French opera. Faust, an aged and bitter man, sells his soul to Méphistophélès in return for youth and the love of Marguerite. Gounod’s sensuous and sublimely melodic masterpiece will be presented in a production not seen before in Vancouver.
The River of Light is an exciting world premiere of a large scale work for chorus, soloists and orchestra conceived and composed by Brian Current, one of Canada’s outstanding composers. It is a multimovement work based on transcendence as described by writers from various traditions (Hindu, Christian, Hebrew, Indigenous Canadian, Islamic, Secular and Chinese Philosophy). Presented in co-production with the Vancouver Bach Choir ..................
This production is generously sponsored by Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes). Our thanks to Production Patrons: Martha Lou Henley, C.M., and Michael & Inna O’Brian .................. Gioachino Rossini’s LA CENERENTOLA In Rossini’s masterpiece, La Cenerentola (Cinderella), the evil stepmother trades places with a malevolent stepfather, the fairy godmother is a philosopher, and the legendary glass slipper is replaced with a bracelet. Nonetheless, the essence of the fairy tale remains: a magical journey from rags to riches. This popular opera hasn’t been seen at Vancouver Opera since 1981.

r. Han Jiang, composer and pianist, Bachelor of Arts of Central Conservatory of Music (CCoM), Master of Arts of University of British Columbia (UBC), Art Director of Vancouver Polaris Music Academy (PMA) and president of Pacific Rim International Music Festival Committee (PRM).
As a composer, Han Jiang is already starting the make ripples in the world. The world is beginning to understand his music, which covers a wide span of genres from soundtracks to serious music, from songs to symphonies.
If music in the 20th century inclined to follow rational rules, such as serialism, the music in the 21st century looks more at the integration of cultures and expression of emotion. Han Jiang’s works break the technical barriers of music schools in search for their commonalities in essence, thus interweaving them seamlessly. At the same time, he also endeavors to retain the features of his home culture in his works.

As a pianist, Piano is an indispensable part of the musician’s life. Having studied in different parts of the world, his piano performance features a combination of different schools. And he is especially adept at performing late Romantic music and Chinese piano pieces.
Touching the keys in delicate variations, Han Jiang plays with consistent timbre and each note meticulously studied. The pianist digs diligently the messages between the lines of the music scores and audaciously recreates them to strike new resonance in the audience’s heart.
Han Jiang’s passion and rigor for music is also striking a positive chord with his students. He believes that every student is an unpolished gemstone. Thus he tries to uncover the potential of every child, and help them to find their own way of expressing music, pursue their dream and thrive as a musician.

Music is an art
In 2018, He organized the first Pacific Rim International Music Festival (PRM) along with other musicians, offering a platform for the young pianists from the pan-Pacific regions to showcase their talents. As Han Jiang said, “Music is an art that always needs a stage. And it is our common aspiration to provide a stage for the little dreamer and musicians.”
On March 10, 2019, the gala concert of Pacific Rim International Music Festival (PRM), one of the most brilliant in history was held in Chan Centre. Steinway & Sons CEO Ron Losby and special guest pianist Haochen Zhang joined the prize-winners in presenting a fantastic concert in Vancouver. ■

Can’t decide which? Buy a Lexus, I’ll buy a BMW. Buy an Audi, I’ll buy a Mercedes, the best Tesla, a Ferrari and maybe a Bentley for long trips. Will it ever end? I hope not. AWARD SEASON
T
By Leeta Liepins
he holidays have passed, and their associated excitements have rendered physical exhaustion. Surely there is a rejuvenating activity available from the comfort of the coma couch?
Fear not, for respite is on the horizon. Like them or not, the annual awards season is upon us. All things shiny and bright will beckon for approval as the celebrities do what celebrities do best; indulge. They will indulge in singing and dancing, dining and whining. They will indulge in 90 second acceptance speeches that are rewarded with equally uninspired applause. The players in the audience will be too
busy tweeting out their crushing disappointment in having placed second to a lesser light, to join in the ovation. How fickle and fleeting is fame. Whether the medium be film, television or music; the cycle is the same. For every new star that is born, two fade to black. With a turnover rate that is quicker than that for the current White House Staff; ageing out is rarely an option. Increasingly we see that it takes but one poor choice, one bad decision, one lapse in judgement, and your star implodes. Twinkle, twinkle little star, we see you now for what you are. n Leeta Liepins leanwithleeta@outlook.com
