Richmond Fine Art auction house expands collection to include Canadian & International Contemporary Art YKLM hosts first auction of Canadian art Nov. 12

W

o r k by s o m e o f C a n a da’s f i n e st working artists will highlight a coming auction from the Canadian and International Art Department at YKLM.

Building on its established reputation for traditional Chinese artwork and antiques, the Canadian and International department came to life earlier this year in response to a growing market. “While we currently represent a part of the renowned and relatively established Asian art market, there remains a lot of potential for the comprehensive sphere of contemporary Canadian art,” explains Emily Cavanagh, from YKLM. YKLM’s first live Canadian art auction will take place at its Richmond art gallery, known as Lipont, on Nov. 12. “There already exists a market for historical and post-war Canadian artworks. We found that with the advantage of our contemporary art gallery, owned by the same company, the opportunity to network and promote the various established artists in the area is considerable,” Cavanagh says. “So, why not curate a live auction with one-of-a-kind works that our gallery audience hasn’t necessarily seen before, and that we can introduce to our global clientele?”

June Yun, SPRING DROPS 点绿 , Oil on Canvas, 28 x 28". Estimate: 2400-2800 CAD

A well-curated collection of traditional Canadian painting, such as oil on linen works by Sally Clark, will join more abstract contemporary pieces by artists such as the prolific Farahnaz Samari and Monica Gewurz. Between 20 and 25 artists are expected to be represented at the Nov. 12 auction, and the array of works and price points will make the event ideal for both the first-time buyer and collector – you might find the perfect pieces for your home or office, or a special gift for that discerning friend. The Canadian art auction comes at a time when a growing market of Chinese collectors who, in their search for Chinese classical paintings and works abroad, have developed a strong interest in Western art.

14

B O U L E VA R D

With established collectors appreciating the familiar works of artists such as Emily Carr and the Group of Seven, the sale does reflect elements of classic Canadian painting. However the variation of style and technique is likely to attract a wider audience, and potentially expand the collecting strategy of the seasoned buyer.

Take in the live auction experience As exciting as the anticipated art, is the live auction experience at the gallery itself. Located at 4211 No. 3 Rd., in Richmond, YKLM Auctions is housed at Lipont Place, a one-of a kind gallery space with 22-foot ceilings and expansive windows, offering a unique backdrop to their auctions. While attending the live auction adds an exciting element to the art-buying experience, technology has made it even easier to bring home a piece of art that has captured your eye. Clients can participate through YKLM’s online platform or its mobile app for monthly online auctions – both allow you to bid live from anywhere in the world – or take a more traditional route by placing an absentee or telephone bid on your favoured works with YKLM, and they will bid on your behalf.

Sally Clark, YUKON TREES, Oil on Canvas, 24 x 30”. Estimate: 2000-2200 CAD

As YKLM continues developing its gallery and auction collections, the buzz is growing not only among collectors, but among the local art community as well, as they look to work closely with more local artists, Cavanagh notes. Following the Canadian art auction, spring 2020 will introduce a Chinese contemporary auction, followed by future auctions that work to combine both Chinese and Canadian contemporary art.

Discover the Art Space Alliance YKLM Auctions, which stands for Yì Kōng Lián Méng – translating as Art Space Alliance – is British Columbia’s only auction house working with both Asian fine art, including highly prized antiques, and Canadian contemporary art. YKLM was founded by the Yang Family, renowned in China and abroad for their impressive collection of fine art. The Yang family which has been actively collecting for over three decades, openly advises any new collector, especially in the Chinese community where refinement and culturalism is of primary importance, to collect contemporary work. Mr. Yang himself is fascinated by contemporary art and believes that contemporary art trends are not only the safest form of investment, but also the most exciting for new art collectors. Founded in Xi’an, China in 2015, YKLM soon became recognized by art buyers and dealers from around the world for its collection of high-quality fine art, antiques, jewellery and collectibles. Late last fall, YKLM established a second art auction house in Richmond and today represents more than 500 local and international artists. Learn more at YKLM.ca n

COLU M N

simplifying summer By Lisa Manfield

I

recently returned from a summer vacation visiting family in Calgary, and I came back exhausted. We only had one week there, so we packed in as many activities as we could -- visits with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, a day trip to Banff, Stampede breakfasts at the local mall, midway and shows on the Stampede grounds, the zoo, the lake, shopping and more shopping. It was great, but it was a lot for one week. There wasn’t much time at all to just chill out and relax and I came back feeling tired; like I need another vacation to recover from my vacation. Good thing there’s still a month of summer left for rest and relaxation. Right? Well, it turns out packing in as many activities as I can tends to be my modus operandi throughout the summer months (okay, it’s my m.o. all year long, I admit). So I’ve been busy making my summer bucket list and checking it twice, scouring event calendars and Googling things to do to fill the month of August with as much summer as I can before it’s over. After all, summer is short here in Vancouver, and we need to make the most of it before the rainy season returns. Right? So I thought. But it turns out, I may be going about this all wrong.

a little boredom is best I’ve been reading a lot about the value of boredom. As an adult, it’s hard to remember what boredom feels like, honestly, but as the parent of a young child, I hear the b-word a lot. “What are we going to do now, mummy, I’m bored” is an all-too-familiar refrain at my house. Especially when the days are extra long. I remember back when summers felt interminable and I would utter the same refrain to my mom, which was always met with the same response: “go play

outside.” Or, better yet: “You’re bored? Well I can give you something to do.” That, of course, meant chores, which were definitely not preferable to boredom. While the concept of boredom often has negative connotations, in fact, bring bored has many positive benefits. Not only does a little boredom give the body and mind a break from the daily rat race, doing nothing also gives us the space and time to foster new ideas and bring forth a little creativity, whether it’s coming up with interesting solutions to fill the time, engaging in artistic endeavours or even just burying our heads in a good book while lounging in the sun. In this digital age, we rarely get to the point of being so bored that we get creative because technology is always available to save us from boredom. But resisting the urge to fill every moment with activities is, in fact, the only way to ensure a little relaxation and rejuvenation occurs this summer. So rather than frantically filling the calendar with endof-summer bucket lists, I’m pledging to try to slow down and foster a little more boredom this month. And that way, I won’t need a vacation to recover from the rest of my summer. Because we all know how busy things will get come September. n

Luxury ELEMENTS TO CREATE A

eco-friendly design

By Donna Verlaan

M

odern luxury interiors are not only characterized by indulgent finishes and exclusive, globally branded products. Today modern luxury design refers to quality, timeless appeal and environmentally conscious interiors. Combining posh comforts with eco -friendly design is increasingly becoming the ultimate expression of luxury. Choose Sustainable Stone or Wood Flooring The natural beauty of rugged stone or responsibly sourced wood flooring can add a true sense of luxury. Installing wood or stone flooring, will reduce toxic VOCs, and an offer easy to maintain elegant durability. Source Locally Instead of global shopping a more exclusive and earth friendly option is to purchase bespoke furnishings and decor from local artisans who can create custom, one-of-a-kind pieces. Sourcing materials and decor that is manufactured close to home is good for the environment, reducing pollution that could be used in transport. Use Natural Wood Products Select furniture and finishes crafted from natural, rich solid woods that have been responsibly sourced and do not contain formaldehyde. Antiques and re-purposed wood pieces are also ecologically wise choices because no new wood has been harvested to make them. Bamboo which is a sustainability raised wood is increasingly more available for products providing another eco-friendly option.

Use Organic and Natural Textiles Wool, cotton, silk and feathers are excellent materials for upholstery, rugs, bedspreads and cushions. Pillows and upholstery can be custom designed and richly filled with these natural materials to create sumptuous accessories. Install a Green Wall Installing a green wall provides a stunning feature that can transform a room and create a calm and relaxing vibe. Along with the aesthetic benefits the filtering properties of plants will provide increased air quality and a healthier home. Lush outdoor sanctuaries are another luxurious trend in home design. Richly designed exteriors include outdoor kitchens, comfortable lounge areas and indulgent dining spaces. Luxurious homes today are consciously designed spaces that are all about convenience, functionality and ecofriendliness; providing home owners with the ultimate home experience, beautiful design that offers a healthy and comfortable living environment. n

SILVER LINING Brings Home the Gold

HOM E S

Every renovation has a story and this one is a winner, with a silver lining.

M

ulti-Ovation Award winning builder Tavan Developments Ltd., builds and renovates dream homes in South S u r r e y, S h a u g h n e s s y, K i t s i l a n o , and South Granville. Specializing in homes that truly fit into their neighbourhoods, not only are they beautiful and functional by today’s standards, but they evoke the inherent charm of the neighbourhood in times past. Approached by homeowners faced with what was thought to be a leaky roof, it became apparent to the Tavan team the leaks were more aggressive, causing water damage to windows with extensive structural rot due to poor workmanship on the original structure, compounded by poor home-maintenance over the years. Damage was particularly bad on the side of the home where the stairway is located accessing the upper floor. The silver lining you ask? The exceptional renewal of this home’s entry and stairway only came to light because of the major remediation required to correct the structural damage to the building envelope of the home. With 90% of the exterior envelop removed, the homeowners took the opportunity to upgrade and enhance the main entry point of their home. In addition, the stairway was fully updated as part of the renovation. As the main corridor between floors, it was crucial for the space to be serviceable as well as beautiful. Today, entering the newly renovated home, guests are greeted to a renewed sense of grandeur. The magnificent chandeliers take centre stage with regal elegance. The gold-painted circular dome highlights and warms the chandelier’s light.

The curved balcony railing, with recessed circular hallway ceiling compliments the light reflected from the domed ceilings. Running down the stairway’s bannister is classic wood-spindles, topped by dark wood caps to bring out flooring details. Handset intricately designed marble floor consists of combination of Iceberg, Crema, and Black Nero marble. Beautiful mouldings, paneling on stair landing further complement the entrance and foyer/ staircase renewal. ‘Simply White’ painted walls showcase artistic wallcovering inside moulding frames. Dark stained interior French doors perfectly frame the leaded glass doors. Behind the elegant décor is a home built for the ages and should not to be overlooked. All new mechanical systems, including proper ventilation, were added to prevent future moisture issues including a dehumidifier, and new air conditioning systems, (one for main, and one for upper floor.) Nine zones of in-floor radiant-heating on a recirculating pump controlled by Nest thermostats, plus HRV for the main and the upper floor, basement, and the swimming pool are just some of the highlights behind the scene, which operate to create the perfect living environment. BC Children’s Hospital

- Sandra Hurtley, Decorator B O U L E VA R D

HOM E S

T

hey are commonly referred to as ‘Dream Homes’; a term largely associated with Hospital Lotteries throughout BC and their spectacular grand prizes. And in the pantheon of living ones fantasy in glittering surroundings, that dream is bound only by imagination.

And it’s that imagination that comes into play in the mind of Decorator, Sandra Hurtley of Positive Space Staging and Design; who has operated her own business since 2006 and has lent her talents to Lottery Prize Homes for the past five years. Hurtley’s work is again proudly on display in the current BC Children’s Hospital Lottery Dream Home Grand Prize located in White Rock and worth over 2.8 million. “You could call me the Interior Decorator,” she says of her role in this project”. A designer is more architectural; whereas I focus more on the décor’.” Beginning her career working with builders within new construction in hard finishes picking flooring, countertops and lighting; her role soon evolved into deciding the décor’. “I focus mainly on doing home staging; décor – I help clients when they buy a new home pick their furnishings and paint colours, but I think the distinction is that I’m a decorator versus a designer.” When I’m doing a project like the Lottery show homes; the home dictates the lifestyle so the inspiration completely comes from the architecture of the home and I’m putting together each room by envisioning what the lifestyle would be. This home in White Rock is very elegant; very grand and the scale is large so I ‘m just really creating the story of the lifestyle of the home.” With spectacular show homes currently dotting the landscape in BC, it becomes somewhat of a personal mission to continually raise the bar in offering something unique to her client base.

By Joe Leary Photos by Brian Giebelhaus

“There is a formula to a room but I am constantly trying to create new spaces and the trends in the design industry tend to change constantly so you always want people to see things they haven’t seen before and you want to help people get new ideas as they walk through the homes. In this house in particular the draperies in the formal dining room are Gold Snakeskin and making that choice might have seemed bold but they are one of my favourite features of this prize home.

The feel and warmth that they give the dining room is the focal point. I am constantly trying to think outside the box and push it a little bit. I also like a little whimsy in a room where I take something unexpected and add it to the concept of a room because I believe it makes it much more interesting.” In the overall business of design and décor’, clients can have very specific ideas in mind for their living space. Whether or not they may fit is quite another matter. “There are times when I think that a client is asking me for something that I know won’t work so I have to help them understand why,” she admits. “In my mind I can visualize it immediately but a bigger part of my job is communicating it to the client so that they understand why I may recommend something different. It’s important that a concept has flow so I try to help people understand, that each selection they make represents everything else that’s happening in the space and that cohesive looks makes it appear effortless.” Photo by Alfonso Arnold

And for those of us that haven’t successfully won the lottery yet and don’t think that any space can be transformed into your own personal dream home, Sandra Hurtley begs to differ. “I have staged and worked with clients from studio apartments to penthouses to show suites – I’ve done it all and you really don’t have to have a huge budget. 34

B O U L E VA R D

You just need to have the right pieces and have it put together in a way that really works for the space. I actually really love working with smaller spaces and making them really functional and beautiful. “ Again, it all comes down to living your dream. And as Sandra will tell you: “If you dream it I can do it.” n

Located on a 9290 square foot lot at 1156 Habgood Street, White Rock sits the 2.8 million dollar Grand Prize Home in this year’s BC Children’s Hospital Lottery. broadcast fixture for nearly two decades, Erin Cebula has been seen on screen in all facets of the industry.

Be it Global TV; ‘Urban Rush’; feature reporting for ‘Entertainment Tonight Canada’; hosting HGTV’s ‘Makeover Wish’ or promoting Dream Homes for BC Children’s Hospital Lotteries this ebullient dynamo covers it all. A graduate of Aldergrove Secondary (ASS); a scholarship to the University of The Fraser Valley eventually led to a TV Broadcasting Diploma at BCIT. Married in the Maldives in 2004, Erin has now been with her husband Shawn Lee for as long as she’s been on screen. Together the couple co-owns a boutique real estate brokerage firm called Blu Realty. We sat for an engaging conversation at the popular Mount Pleasant eatery, AJ’s Brooklyn Pizza Joint. What enticed you into broadcasting? EC: I couldn’t describe it as enticed; I was a kid and realized that I wanted to ask questions for a living. I was eight years old and my parents gifted me with a little tape recorder and microphone for Christmas. It started there, interviewing my family on holidays and basically harassing them. Did you feel there were obstacles for you to overcome versus a male counterpart? EC: I never felt that that was a stumbling block for me but I never focused on that. I was a sports woman growing up; I did everything that in some eyes would be considered maledominated activities. I think being a woman maybe helped me in some situations and probably harmed me in others too but I never looked at that as a reason why it didn’t go the way I wanted. Have you been star struck? EC: It’s usually musicians that I get a little bit weird about - I gushed over the Canadian band Sloan on ‘Urban Rush’. I was goofy and brought my albums for them to sign and realized that I wasn’t being a reporter, I was being a fan. They kind of made fun of me on air and I remember blushing. That was a big lesson for me. Appreciate; but don’t go in as a fan. You can be impressed - I mean sitting across from Meryl Streep is cool but don’t let it ever overshadow that job at hand.

You had a cameo in the video for Michael Buble’s, ‘Haven’t Met You Yet.’ That’s gotta be on the cool list. EC: Michael Buble’ became a friend and was one of the first artists that really taught me an interview could be play time. On the set of that video to interview him we were just having our typical, goofy time and at the end he asked, “What else can I do for you?” I jokingly said, “Put me in your video”. He went, “Really, what do you want to do?” I said, ‘I want to dance.” Within seconds he hooked me up with the choreographer! I couldn’t do any of the moves that the real dancers were doing so I was just in the corner, shimmying my shoulders. Ever experienced someone you were looking forward to meeting falling short of expectations? EC: I certainly have had that experience, but it’s another lesson. Don’t go in with your expectations in mind with what you think that person is going to be all about because you’re getting a curated, edited version of what you’ve seen in their films, television shows or music. Don’t build people up to the point they can’t live up to. 42

B O U L E VA R D

Some in the ‘Hollywood Machine’ are spoiled and used to being told “Yes” all the time. If you challenge them or don’t give them what they need; you might get a little attitude. You’ve been on the set of ‘Survivor’. Million dollar prize aside how well would you do on an actual season? Can you get down in the mud; spear a fish in the water and make fire? EC: I am a challenge beast! I’m not afraid! I can swim, climb, I can do it all but I wouldn’t be a great competitor because I’m terrible when I haven’t eaten and don’t sleep. I am a monster and the shiny, happy person that you know Joe, is not the person you would see on ‘Survivor’, so that would hold me back. Jeff Probst (host) asked me the same question because he suggested I should apply and said my social game would be strong. Yes, when I’m well fed and have had my sleep - without that, I’m afraid I’m a way better reporter than player. Finally, where do you see yourself in 5/10 years? EC: Developing and running a kick-ass guesthouse/retreat somewhere gorgeous!

CLARINS launches four new fragrances MUGLER: Alien Fusion

MUGLER: Alien Man Fusion

Attention, fragrance in fusion: a fiery fragrance escapes from the bottle. Sambac Jasmine, the signature ingredient and intrinsically a flower of the sun, gives way to radiant Orange Blossom… Through its intense fragrance trail, Alien Fusion revisits is predecessor in its own unique hot spicy version, offering an olfactory reinterpretation of this moment when the elements passionately melt together. The perfume of a new incandescence that glows, fiery and enveloping.

Alien Man Fusion electrifies the senses. In a high voltage hot-cold dichotomy, under opposing stars, the fragrance blows sparks into the electric heat. Between contrasting rays of the sun and moon, the Eau de Toilette outlines a sophisticated masculinity with a animal sensuality. An olfactory inferno, intense, addictive, and energetic.

The Bottle The Alien Fusion bottle is a precious stone in its rough state. A sacred talisman set in gold, its glass is coloured with an incandescent red like the rarest ruby. Slightly translucent, this new fiery red bottle encapsulates the colour of molten Sun, spreading a soft light of hope – the power of an eclipse captured in a bottle.

The Bottle Alien Man Fusion reinterprets its monolithic predecessor in a sapphire blue with luminous reflections. There, where the single line of silver matches the golden claws of the feminine version, the new bottle embodies a precious stone of such a vibrant blue that it becomes supernatural. With its smooth facets and sharply defined edges, it draws a transparently graphic and virile silhouette. A vibrant halo, like a rough sapphire in the hand of a man.

Available at Hudson’s Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart, Jean Coutu, Murale and Sephora. 60ml $114.00.

Available at Hudson’s Bay. 100ml $90.00.

MUGLER: Angel

AZZARO: Wanted Girl

An emotionally-charged perfume that makes every day magical, Angel Mugler shines brilliantly in the sky of great perfumes and constantly inspires new wonder. Embark on a magical journey into the Mugler universe, where memories of sweet moments intermingle with visions of glamourous women. With its tender, gourmand and captivating fragrance trail, Angel creates a unique relationship with it wearer.

Wanted Girl is an Eau de Parfum that's hard to classify. If you really had to put a label on it, it would be a Floral Oriental Gourmand. However, it’s much more than that, with three all new accords for a three dimensional floral quality. Its trail? 3D flower that's exactly like her: explosive, alluring, and delectable… but never too sweet!

The Bottle 100 ml – New Star The bottle is a star, the fetish symbol of Thierry Mugler. A glass start cut like a diamond, sparkling and mysterious facets like a kaleidoscope of emotion… This new star shapes joins the Mugler constellation.

The Bottle A true work of art, this delicate flower hides quite a few tricks under its glass petals and metal neck. The bottle is slightly inclined – like a desire it arouses. The transparency of the glass showcases the radiant fragrance that packs quite a punch. And, for the ultimate finish, the cap is engraved with the signature medallion, round like a token and golden like the sun: Azzaro.

Available at Hudson's Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart and Jean Coutu. 100ml $188.00.

Available at Hudson's Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs, Jean Coutu, Brunet, Uniprix and Familiprix. 50 ml $97.00 | 80 ml $127.00.

ant beautiful skin? Face masks are a must. You don’t have to be hard core like celebrities and use more than 700 a year, but two to three times a week is essential. I recently tested all kinds of face masks and selected the best 10 to share with you.

Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Revitalizing Face Mask Unlike conventional face masks that come in 1 sheet, this mask is split into two halves - top and bottom, that comes individually packaged. After cleansing and balancing the skin, place the lower half of the mask around the mouth area, then position the upper half around the eyes. Remove the mask after about 15 minutes and massage excess serum into the skin until it is absorbed. Developed with Shiseido’s original “Pure Liquid Retinol Delivery system”, it helps combat wrinkles, dryness and dullness. With Chlorella, a concentrated aquatic plant revitalizing essence and Hydroxyproline, a high-technology amino acid whose structure resembles the skin’s natural collagen tissue, it helps promote the growth of natural collagen. It also rejuvenates the skin’s natural healing function, providing a source of moisture and enhancing the skin’s texture. It can restore youthfulness and elasticity to the skin. If intensive repair is required, use 2-3 times a week. $80 (4 pieces); Hudson’s Bay, Nordstrom, Shoppers Drug Mart, Jean Coutu, London Drugs, Murale and Sephora.com

Rodial Snake Oxygenating & Cleansing Bubble Mask This face mask by Rodial is designed to deeply cleanse, remove excess oil and brighten the skin. It is suitable for all skin types, but more so for oily acne skin and closed acne skin. It is enriched in O2 bubbles, which can deeply clean and remove dirt from pores, leaving the skin fresh and smooth. It also contains the patented SYN®-AKE dipeptide, rich collagen, ceramide and vitamins A and E, restoring the skin’s resilience and looking rejuvenated. Something magical happens shortly after the black mask is applied on the face - it starts bubbling up into a frothy foam, like those you get from rubbing facial cleanser on the face, and you can hear bubbling sounds as well. This bubbling process is actually oxygen entering the pores for deep cleansing and eliminating old dead skin cells and toxins. Overall, this is a new cleansing mask that won’t strain, does not over clean, is very gentle, and offers excellent oil control. $78 (8 pieces); Murale and Murale.ca

46

Rodial Vitamin C Energising Face Mask Rodial’s bio-cellulose mask contains Vitamin C, Vitamin b3, amino acids and hyaluronic acid. Apply for 10-15 minutes, then remove the mask and massage excess serum into the skin until it is absorbed. The skin will instantly become glowing, smooth and youthful. If you plan to attend some special events and hope to look beautiful, use this mask before you apply makeup, you will get a surprising effect. $60 (4 pieces); Murale and Murale.ca

Rodial Vit C Brightening Mask Infused with 5% pure Vitamin C and a blend of 10% exfoliating fruit AHAs and other acids, this mask helps smooth and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, evens skin tone and re-surfaces the complexion to reveal glowing skin. Its texture is a lightweight, cooling gel. Apply a thin layer to cleansed skin, leave it on for 15-20 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. The skin will look radiant. Always patch test before use. $110; Murale and Murale.ca

CT Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask Having experienced the magic with CT’s makeup products, its dry sheet mask is nothing like you have tried before. I did not say it wrong, nor did you hear it wrong, this really is a magic dry sheet mask. Unlike traditional sheet masks that are soaked with serum, this mask being dry surely makes people wonder. It is proven to moisturize, hydrate, lift, firm, reduce wrinkles, and give the skin a healthy glow. There are top and bottom hooks on the mask. Looping them over the ears will have the face wrapped tightly within this dry cloth. As in the instructions, gently massage on top to activate the mask, yet it stays dry and drip free, leaving me with little expectation. Removing the mask after 15 minutes reveals a gorgeous, glowing HD camera-ready skin that is hydrated and revitalized. Do not be misled by its dry texture, this mask actually contains rich ingredients such as Vitamin B3, floral extracts, peptides, oils and butters that are activated through massage. Unlike traditional masks, this doesn’t harbour bacteria, so each sheet can be used up to 3 times. $27 (1 piece), $98 (4 pieces); Available at all Charlotte Tilbury counters and www.charlottetilbury.com B O U L E VA R D

Omorovicza Midnight Radiance Mask This overnight gel mask is packed with sand lily extract, salicylic acid, red Alga and sodium hyaluronate that exfoliates the skin’s surface, improves pigmentation, brightens the skin and makes dull and lifeless skin regain natural radiance. It also helps lock in moisture and regulate oil secretion. A semi-opaque, light blue gel mask that gives a cool sensation and is easily absorbed by the skin. Enjoy a good night sleep, and wake up the next morning to find a brightly lit face with a smooth, delicate touch. $162; Nordstrom

First, apply the cooling gel essence powered by rosewater, damask rose extract, and hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture, giving you plump, smooth skin. Then use the silky water-milk mask that uses time-release technology and evening primrose root extract to lock in moisture. This next-level sleeping mask is proven to give you plump, smooth skin after one night. When used together with facial treatment essence and eye cream, the result is even better. $60; Sephora, sephora.ca, Nordstrom and nordstrom.ca

Sulwhasso Snowise Brightening Exfoliating Mask This exfoliating mask by Sulwhasso is infused with white ginseng powder, honey, and Korean herbs, and has a light white ginseng aroma. White ginseng powder mixed with honey yields a thick, yellow gel formula that looks very nutritious. Using the accompanying silicone brush, the mask can be applied onto the face cleanly and conveniently. Unlike other exfoliating product, the natural white ginseng powder gently washes away dead skin cells, giving a smootherlooking complexion, while honey hydrates and balances moisture levels in the skin. The combination of white ginseng powder and honey makes the skin radiates from inside out and enhances the skin’s elasticity. After cleansing the face, apply a thin layer of the mask on your face. After 10 minutes, gently massage your face for 2-3 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water while you are in the shower. Immediately after use, dull skin tone is effectively improved and the skin appears plump and bright. It can be used 2-3 times a week, offering gentle cleansing and moisturizing care. $88 / 80ml; Holt Renfrew and Nordstrom

Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask This peel-off mask is formulated with natural herbs, such as finely ground Solomon’s Seal, premium honey, Japanese Honeysuckle and ginseng. The honey-like texture effectively removes impurities and dead skin cells, leaving lustrous looking skin. Natural ingredients like pine, licorice, Cnidium Officinale, and Angelica Acutiloba provide a truly relaxing experience for the skin. After applying Sulwhasoo’s First Care Activating Serum, Water and Emulsion in the evening, apply an appropriate amount of the clarifying mask on the face, avoiding the eye and lip area. Wait 2030 minutes for the mask to dry, then peel it off from top to bottom. $50 / 150ml; Holt Renfrew and Nordstrom.

Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Mask This overnight mask contains Scutellaria root, walnut extract and Angelica Acutiloba. You can leave the mask on as you sleep, and wake up to see your skin moisturized and radiant. At the final stage of skincare, apply an appropriate amount of the mask on the face, avoiding the eye and lip area, and wash off with lukewarm water the next morning. $65 / 120mL; Holt Renfrew and Nordstrom B O U L E VA R D

CAMPANIA

OF SOUTHERN ITALY

Story by: Leeta Liepins

J

ust back from a whirlwind tour through the Campania region of Southern Italy, and I must say, what an enlightening adventure it was.

While most oenophiles appreciate that this particular region is home to some of the world’s most ancient grape varietals, two emerging and important grapes have captured more than just the imagination of the initiated. I am referring of course to the Aglianico grape and the Falanghina grape. Nearly wiped out by phylloxera in the late 19th century, the Aglianico grape is once again rising to prominence. The Aglianico is a black grape which, in the right hands, can produce a delicious deep garnet wine. It grows very well in soils of volcanic origin, and the soils of the Campania region have been wonderfully nurtured for this role by the ashes of Mount Vesuvius. Indeed, even the writings of Pliny the Elder and Horace reference the ‘smoky aroma’ of this nectar. B O U L E VA R D

53

AGLIANICO My first introduction to this firm red took place in a century old vineyard picturesquely poised on the slopes of Mount Taburno, the beautiful ‘Cantina del Taburno’. Their signature label, Bue Apis, was savoured in the company of the vineyards farmer, winemaker, and owner. The laughter flowed as easily as the wine, and it all made for a memorable morning in the gracious company of new friends. The afternoon consisted of a tasting seminar f o r A g l i a n i c o d e l Tu b u r n a w i n e s f r o m throughout the region. There were 23 wines 54

B O U L E VA R D

in total to taste, and the order of the tasting was determined by the vintage of the wine. The contributing wineries ranged from small family owned enterprises whose annual production was on the order of 25,000 bottles; to large commercial endeavours yielding up to 3 million bottles per year. Large players or small, the passion of the sponsors was universal. To each of them, wine and winemaking is a way of life. While much mirth and storytelling were shared throughout the ‘pomeriggio’, there remained a palpable appreciation and respect for the work of all present. My next stop was the medieval town of Guardia Sanframondi, in

‘‘

IN THIS TERRITORY, FALANGHINA IS OUR GOLD”

FALANGHINA the Province of Benevento, Campania region. Oozing history and architecture dating back to the 12th century, one could easily get lost there both figuratively and literally. My mission however was to discover the fabled Falanghina grape and the wines it yields. Originally imported from ancient Greece, this yellow skinned grape too enjoys the Mount Vesuvius soil characteristics. It produces a golden, wonderfully light wine that is so easy on the palate.

The past 20 years have seen the Falanghina grape enjoy a paradigm shift in cultivation techniques. Additionally, climate change has increased the temperatures in the region, and this in turn has helped to develop the aromatics of the varietal. Our wine host stated that “In this territory, Falanghina is our gold”. This grape is widely considered to be the best ambassador for the entire wine valley. Fun fact: Falanghina is the most widely exported wine from Campania. In November 2014, Falanghina

T R AV E L

was approved as a recognized varietal in the United States. Clearly, its star is on the rise. As I winged my way back to Vancouver, I pondered the discovery of these two exquisite grape varietals. After tasting the beauty of Falanghina and the richness of Aglianico, I mused on why these wines are not more readily available at the fine Italian restaurants in our city. Happily, the Sannio Consorzio Tutelo Vini is actively introducing these excellent products to the world. Once tasted, providing enough inventory to meet the resultant demand will prove to be the biggest challenge that they face. â– B O U L E VA R D

O

nce I dreamt that I’d walk into my huge garage every morning and pick out the car according to my needs and desires, like I do with picking out my attire each day. This is the ultimate dream for every car enthusiast. I was back in reality fairly quickly - now I only have a double garage, not to mention the financial challenges it would bring if I purchase all the cars I like, but who knows? Perhaps my dream will become a reality one day. I m u s t s a y, t h e r e i s s t i l l a g a p between reality and the dream I once had - I have not owned every car I like, nor do I have a huge garage. However, I can still choose

my car according to my changing needs and desires. My concierge will clean my car, fill up the tank and deliver it to the place and at the time I want. When I get tired of it, I can flip to another car as often as every few days or every week. These cars are my favorite brands like MercedesBenz, Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche, Land Rover, etc. Better still, these cars are at most 2 years old. The service I tried was Portfolio, a luxury car subscription service launched by Open Road in 2019. Like Netflix, you pay a flat monthly fee and Portfolio will deliver the car you request. Subscribers can choose from three different packages – The $3,499 month-to-month subscription allows you to drive 4 different

cars in a month; $2,999 per month for three months allows you to drive 5 different cars in a month; and $2,499 per month for six months allows you to drive 6 different cars in a month. The monthly fee includes comprehensive vehicle insurance, maintenance, pickup and delivery through a 24-hour concierge service. Once you become a member, you can download the Portfolio app onto your smartphone and begin subscribing. You will be asked a few simple questions, such as your hobbies and driving purposes. Your answers will allow the system to learn more about you and to better find a car that matches your needs. If you have a car in mind, simply input a description of the car and your concierge will do its best to fulfill your request. For example, I had a sports car club event on the first weekend of my subscription, and was looking to purchase a Porsche at that time. I really wanted to try a Porsche's sports car, so I stated in my remarks that I wanted a European sports car. The next day, a

silver Porsche Boxster S was delivered to my doorstep. In the second week, I flipped to a Porsche Cayman as I wished. According to Portfolio’s Manager Alex Parsons, there are now 9 brands with 28 cars to choose from. This number will continue to rise, and the models will continue to change according to the season, so do expect to find different models in summer and winter times. In other words, if you pay a monthly rent equivalent to a two-bedroom apartment, you can try a variety of luxury cars worth over $100,000. This seems even better than my dream. At least I don't have to worry about maintaining and insuring the cars. This works as long as I don't want to own them. However, if you find yourself to have fallen in love with a specific car over this short-term relationship, it gives you firm grounds in considering a purchase.

Alex believes that Portfolio can be used as a prelude to buying a car. If you want to buy a luxury car and is hesitant between brands and models, Portfolio offers you a relatively long test drive, giving you a clearer understanding and a driving experience of each model. Ultimately, you can select the one that suits you best. Moreover, Portfolio is perfect for the lives of modern young people, who like to change cars constantly and are faced with the limited parking spaces in apartment buildings. Portfolio's service addresses these problems. Business travellers are also Portfolio’s target service group. They work in the Greater Vancouver area for one or two months or even half a year. With Portfolio, they don't have to purchase a car. The concierge can

take the car to the airport and it is ready for them to drive away once they get off the plane. When their trip comes to an end, they can arrange to have the concierge pick up the car at the airport, which is quite convenient. Go on a date night or weekend getaway in a convertible Porsche Boxster S or Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 Cabriolet, attend a major business meeting with the BMW 5 Series or Genesis G80, and travel afar with the Cayenne or Audi Q7 on the road... .. Portfolio is interpreting modern life in a new way and leading a new luxury style – the key here is not to possess, but to experience. n

hether you do yoga, go to the gym three or four times a week, eat healthier meals with less oil, less salt, less sugar, or choose organic products, many people falter over alcohol, or like me, has the continual struggle between to drink or not to drink. There is an irreconcilable contradiction between health and drinking. Recently there is a wine that associates its brand with health. The Nolet family in the Netherlands, who produced Ketel One Vodka, has launched a healthy version of its product, Ketel One Botanical. This healthy version vodka is distilled with plants, natural extracts of fruit and plant extracts. It has low alcohol concentration, low calories, no carbohydrates, no fat, and no added sugar or artificial flavors. Compared to traditional vodka, Botanical’s alcohol concentration is at 30%, which is 10% lower than the traditional. Compared to white grape wine, Botanical has only 73 calories per 1.5 ounces, whereas white grape wine contains 121 calories per 1.5 ounces and regular vodka containing 110 calories per 1.5 ounces.

“WE” GENERATION The Confidence of Today’s Youth By Leeta Liepins OurCityTonightLeeta@gmail.com

T

he 30 year reign of the Millennial Generation has closed. Dutifully, they have been directed to shuffle off stage left, thus clearing the way for the next cadre of Young Turks. Collectively dubbed “Generation Z”, “iGen” or the “We Generation” (born between 19952012); these next best and brightest shiny faces are now ready to embrace their 15 minutes of fame. Groomed in the “we are all winners” environment, how have the acolytes of this doctrine prepared this cohort of candidates for that thing which is life? Are societal expectations now attuned to that mantra? How will the “We Generation” respond as their moment emerges? To be sure, this is a collective reared in the the immersive environment of the internet and all things Tech. The richness of this habitat, and the access to all of the information contained therein, must surely have a profound effect on the development of attitude. Preliminary reports speak of a cautious and measured approach regarding career choices. They have witnessed first hand the oft repeated crash and burn scenarios of the Millennials; too often stung by card houses built on shifting sands. From the carnage, the “iGen’s” learned the lesson and the value of resilience. The resilience of the “We Generation” has produced a confident and capable set of entrepreneurs that demonstrate the ability to work effectively in isolation, or as part of the collective. They are willing to subsume the eclectics of fashion, commerce, and the importance of things important. They exhibit a quiet confidence in certitude of their core beliefs.

The fluid lines of social norms are now less consistent and predictable than ever before. While this new reality presents risk, it coincidently offers opportunity. Never before has a generation had access to the speed of information transfer that “iGen” does. Never before has a generation had the profound ability to communicate global concepts globally, that “iGen” does. How they choose to deploy these assets will profoundly influence the future. Consider, for just a moment, the impact of borderless insight and compassion. ■
