Welc me to the FRINGE

A

s President of the Board of Directors of the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society, I once again have the pleasure of welcoming you to this year’s Fringe Festival. Whether you are frequent Fringer returning after an absence, or trying out your first Festival, I sincerely hope that you enjoy our presentations. My personal experience with the Vancouver Fringe is one of a returning enthusiast. After a couple of tentative steps into the Fringe waters 20 years ago, I returned to the audience six years ago and was amazed at the quality of the theatre productions being offered. Those first tentative steps turned into volunteering and viewing 20 shows in one year. That led to offering my services as a committee member and eventually board member. I continue to see 20 shows or so a year and continue to be rewarded with fantastic theatre experiences. But the Fringe is more than just theatre. It’s being on Granville Island to experience the buzz of talking about different shows. It’s meeting new people while you stand in line and sharing your experiences and reviews. It’s taking a risk and trying out new types of shows or venues (last year there was a play in a van). It’s going to the Fringe Bar and catching some music and having a drink with friends. It’s seeing new acts and catching up with old friends. Of course none of this can happen without a magical formula coming together. That includes financial support from all three levels of government, personal contributions from patrons such as yourselves, corporate sponsorship, donations from a long list of contributors who are cited in this program, the dedication and vision of our permanent and seasonal staff, the extraordinary energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers, and of course, the continued and growing support of you—our audience. And hats off to my colleagues on the Board who join me in inviting you to enjoy our 26th annual Vancouver International Fringe Festival.

Lonnie Propas President First Vancouver Theatrespace Society

I

t’s been a year of struggle with dramatic cuts and restructuring to provincial arts funding. We have responded with a vocal opposition, concerned at the long term effects that this will have on our Festival and our province. I was recently reminded by a colleague that the greatest subsidy to the arts is underpaid and unpaid administrators and artists. None of the richness and splendor of a diverse artistic landscape would exist without our determination and passion. The show must go on! And the Fringe is of course a stunning example of artistic determination. These artists have no guaranteed fees and no grants to help them get started. They are putting on their shows because they have the determination to bring their ideas to the stage in this fantastic buffet of theatre we call the Fringe. There are two possibilities when faced with a buffet—you either overeat and pile a dinner roll next to the pasta salad, next to the cold cuts, next to the poached salmon and the half scoop of chili . . . or you artfully select only those items that will actually go well together as a meal. Either way, you get what you want and leave feeling satisfied that you ate your fill and didn’t pay too much. So here you are at the Fringe, a veritable buffet of theatre! You know which approach is for you—go for it! And don’t forget to leave room for dessert.

David Jordan Executive Director Vancouver International Fringe Festival

O

n behalf of the British Columbia Arts Council, it is my great pleasure to welcome audiences and artists to the 2010 Vancouver International Fringe Festival. Over the next ten days, a variety of local venues on and around Granville Island will host an amazing range of theatrical performances. I hope you will revel in the eclectic program of inspired performances that these actors, directors, designers, and producers have come together to create. The BC Arts Council is particularly proud to support the commitment of the dedicated organizers and volunteers who continue to make this event such a rewarding experience for audiences. Enjoy!

Jane Danzo Chair BC Arts Council

O

n behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2010 Vancouver International Fringe Festival. We are very proud of Vancouver’s reputation as a centre for arts and culture. Few of our cultural organizations are as successful as the Vancouver Fringe Festival at showcasing new talent. The Festival has garnered a reputation near and far as a favourite annual event. We anxiously await taking in the many days of theatrical pleasure. To the Festival staff and volunteers: congratulations, and I hope you enjoy many more years of success. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the Festival to be entertaining and enlightening.

ur Government understands the important role that arts and culture play in creating healthy communities and a strong identity. We know that creativity and innovation are vital, not only to a robust Canadian culture, but also to our economy. This is why we are pleased to support events like the Vancouver International Fringe Festival that bring together people of all ages and backgrounds and give them an opportunity to experience eclectic and exciting theatrical performances. For more than a quarter of a century, this festival has delighted audiences with its wide range of inventive and original theatre that both challenges and celebrates the cultural fabric of our communities. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate the organizers, performers, and volunteers who have helped make this festival possible. Your efforts contribute to the vitality of Vancouver’s artistic landscape and the cultural and economic strength of Canada as a whole. We are proud to support you in sharing your passion for the arts. James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

r u O t Mee : t s o H s ne o J . C David By Earl Von Tapia David C. Jones

is an actor, writer, producer, director, teacher, comedian, and regular host and emcee. He also gets bored easily. David C. Jones during the An interviewer Fringe’s 2009 live auction. Photo by Dan Fairchild. once described him as a “Pillar of the Vancouver Entertainment Community.” Really though, he’s making his mark on the entire world. He has used his extensive experience with all facets of theatre and entertainment to provide people around the world with laughter and joy. A corporate comedian, his clients number in the hundreds (he admits that he’s lost count) and range from charitable organizations to large corporations. One of his most recent stints was being the Entertainment Manager for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games, where he managed the entertainment for all sporting venues. David’s boredom often leads him to either create or become heavily involved in numerous organizations related to the arts. He founded and ran the sketch comedy group, Rock. Paper.Scissors. for 12 years, which produced 16 stage productions, some of which ended up touring the world. He formed the Sketch in Time Society, a non-profit charity that stages fundraisers for charity groups and non-profits. He works in film under the moniker DCJ Productions, and he’s a member of committees that are related to the arts community. Of course you don’t do all of these things without getting some recognition. He’s won numerous awards over the years, including Best Comedian in Vancouver from the Georgia Straight in 2005, a Top 40 under 40 from Business in Vancouver in 2004, and numerous other awards for his entertainment work and productions. David’s talent as an actor and comedian, combined with his natural creativity and engaging personality, allow him to host any style of event with such finesse that he gets asked to do this sort of thing a lot. David also has a lot of outfits that he uses, which helps. David was the guest auctioneer at last year’s Opening Night Gala, and helped raise $4,000 from the crowd (double from the previous year) using his style, humour, and crazy energy. We know that he will outdo himself as the host of our Opening Night this year! vancouverfringe.com 5

Getting to the Fringe Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is the Vancouver International Fringe Festival’s hub. With restaurants, a public food market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Its relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountains and ocean make Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island is easily accessible through a variety of means. If you are attending shows at other Fringe venues, including BYOVs, please refer to the websites listed here to help you plan your trip.

Walking, Cycling, and Alternate Transportation The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. Visit city.vancouver. bc.ca/maps.htm and click on the “Bicycle Routes” link to find your best route. These routes are also suitable for people on foot. You can also bring your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Aquabus section below for more information.

Public Transit The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station through downtown along Granville Street and on to False Creek South. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #16, or #17 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street

bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.bc.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.).

Aquabus The Aquabus operates from approximately 6:40 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily (please check theaquabus.com for specific route schedules). From September 9 to 19 and September 23 to 26, 2010, the Aquabus offers complimentary ferry service from 4:00 p.m. till final sail time to Fringe patrons who display a valid 2010 Fringe Festival show ticket or online receipt for a Fringe show on the same day. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps visit theaquabus.com.

Parking After 7:00 p.m., parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island!

Between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot to purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.

Taxi Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.

Boat If you’ve got your own boat or other water based form of transportation, free three hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.

Food Bank Shows Not everyone has all they can eat, so the Fringe is partnering with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society to help feed the 25‚000 people who visit Food Bank depots weekly. We asked Fringe artists, who keep 100% of regular box office revenues, if they wanted to donate a portion of their ticket sales to the Food Bank, and the response has been overwhelming! Almost half of this year’s Fringe artists have chosen at least one performance from which they will be donating a minimum of 10% of their revenue to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society—and many artists have chosen more than one performance or a higher percentage. Some have even chosen to donate 10% from all their performances! Be sure to look for this symbol in the program guide. It designates performances from which partial proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank. In addition, your way to get into the Fringe Awards Night on September 19 at Performance Works (see page 9 for details) is by making a cash donation to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Why cash? With each dollar in cash they can purchase $3 worth of food for the people they supports. It’s way better than cans! Thursday, September 16 7:00 p.m.

St. Ambroise Fringe Bar at Agro Café FREE No, seriously—it’s a clown conference! All are welcome—red noses optional.

Friday, September 17 Noon-3:00 p.m.

Playwrights Theatre Centre Cost: $55 ($45 for Fringe artists and volunteers) David Gaines (7(x1) Samurai)—who specializes in movement, mask, improvisation, commedia, and clown, and who has taught at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq—leads this workshop focused on sensitivity and playfulness and their use in performance. Most one-man shows can be called so because one man performs the show. This “one man” shows the audience his own show. But what if there was more than one man? Can you do a two man one-man show? What about a three man one-man show? Not enough? Four men, and only one one-man show.

We are a brand-new sketch comedy trio whose goal is to spread mouthsmiling humour throughout the stars and remind everyone that true world peace and happiness is still possible with faith in love, dreams, and the good ol’ U.S.A! Our newest sketch comedy show promises to dazzle and enlighten as we preach the wisdom of the greatest country on earth!

One Man Show

Nipple rings, tin foil domiciles, animals, sex, “sharts,” speech impediments, pranks, more sex, crazy co-workers, sleeping, and of course . . . massage therapy, are all somehow interweaved and make up the past seven years of my life. This one-man show has made people laugh so hard they peed a little. And this year, I’ll be sharing these stories across the country!

The night was destroyed centuries ago but somehow it has broken through the constant light and nestled itself in the heart and minds of eight lonely souls. There it grows from a thought to a hope then into to a plan to bring the night to life. They must awaken the dark.

Meet Harry. Pedantic, dedicated, and highly strung. “You can’t do that. That’s not how you use LEGO.” An imaginative and lively performance twists Harry inside out as he confronts his worst fear—people! “Get your hands off me. I do not need embracing.” “Girod captivates the audience . . . an excellent night out.” —Australian Stage

Written over 20 years ago by the late monologist Spalding Gray, Swimming to Cambodia uses Gray’s small role in the film The Killing Fields as a platform to examine global instability, social injustice, genocide, the cold war, American politics, sex, drugs, relationships, travel, and the quest for perfect moments. We know it’s really hard to choose from the 83 shows in the Festival! Some folks choose at random while others pour over the program guide. We suggest trying to see multiple shows in one night and making it out to at least one BYOV. For help choosing, look for our Sandwich Board Forest outside 1398 Cartwright on Granville Island (like in the photo, below, left), Poster Clothes Lines around the Island (below, right), or for Buzz Boards, where you and everyone else can write a review. Another option is to visit the Fringe Info Centre (kitty-corner from the Public Market’s main entrance), where we’ll be posting show reviews from the media. Good luck and have fun!

SO MANY CHOICES!!!!

We Don’t Need No

Stinkin’ Venue: Site-Specific Theatre

You

may notice that we have many, many, many more shows in the Bring Your Own Venue (BYOV) category at the Fringe this year. Performers who choose the BYOV option embody the origin of Fringe Festivals in a unique way. Fringe Festivals got their start when eight uninvited theatre groups showed up at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1947 and put on shows at alternative venues, one of which was a medieval morality play in a Cathedral. What they did caught on, and the next year the Scottish playwright and journalist, Robert Kemp reported that “round the fringe of the official Festival drama there seems to be a more private enterprise than before.” The phrase stuck and successors to that first unofficial festival have been called “Fringe” ever since. What’s extra special about so many of our BYOVs this year is the vast number of shows that are site-specific. Site-specific theatre encompasses performances that are intimately tied to the space in which they are performed. The location acts as an additional character, giving the production a unique quality. Audiences are often small and the viewers are rarely separated from the actors by the “fourth wall,” sometimes becoming part of the action or environment. The term “site-specific” can be dated to the early 1980s when theatre groups such as Brith Gof in the U.K. started using the term to describe their experimental work set in abandoned factories, cattle markets, and other such locations. For Brith Gof, who worked with archeologist Michael Shanks, using specific locations was a way to explore relationships between a place, its history, and identity. “Performance recontextualises such sites,” Mike Pearson, Brith Gof’s cofounder and artistic director writes in Theatre/Archaeology. “Site is not just an interesting, and disinterested, backdrop.” In Vancouver, the late ‘90s saw a surge of site-specific theatre that included Theatre Skam’s Louis and Dave, the first BYOV at the 1997 Vancouver Fringe. The show took place in a 1978 Plymouth Volare, where viewers took a literal backseat to Louis and Dave’s search for girls. In an article for theVancouver Sun, Peter Birnie credits the Electric Company Theatre’s 2000 production of Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands as “the launch of the site-specific storm that swept the city.” In that play, the audience was asked to leave the Cultch, which represented Dona Flor’s traditional husband and lifestyle, and walk a block to the WISE Hall, which was decorated as a casino, giving weight to her lover’s lifestyle as a seedy gambler. Kim Collier, Artistic Director and Co-founder of the Electric Company, points out that Dona Flor was a hybrid of traditional and site-specific work, and suggests that their production of The

Wake on Granville Island in 1999 and of The Fall in the abandoned Finning Tractor plant in 2003 are clearer examples of sitespecific theatre. “We built the narrative around the journey through Granville Island and from the history of the locations,” Collier says, explaining the processional nature of The Wake. The production included 11 locations, one of which necessitated choreographing rowboats. In The Fall, which Collier describes as being the highlight of her career, the storyline was developed in less than six weeks using improvisation from the cast based on the location and on found objects—including heavy machinery abandoned in the warehouse. Furthermore, the vast size of the factory allowed for vehicles to be driven into scenes, cranes to swing over the audience, and a bed to be suspended for a mid-air sex scene! Although Birnie credits the Electric Company with kicking off the popularity of site-specific work in Vancouver, Collier points to the Caravan Stage Farm and the Caravan Stage Society as major influences for her and fellow Electric Company co-founders, Kevin Kerr and Jonathon Young. The trio grew up in the B.C. interior, near Armstrong, home of

the Caravan Stage Farm, and one of the many stops the Caravan Stage Company made since their inception in 1970 (the two Caravans were once one, but split at some point with the Farm staying put while the Company continued to tour). The Caravan Stage Company traveled by horse and wagon, setting up stages in whatever locales they could find in cities and towns of varying sizes. It brought theatre to those who otherwise may never get a chance to see performing arts. The Company is still traveling, albeit on a sailing barge, and are currently performing in Croatia and Slovenia. The Caravan Farm has also continued. Their current production is called Everyone. Since the late ‘90s, many theatre groups have developed site-specific work in Vancouver, so much so that the city has become renowned for being a leader of the form. Vancouver’s current sitespecific darling is Hive, a collective of 12 theatre companies including the Electric Company, Theatre Skam, the Only Animal, and Boca del Lupo (who are presenting a BYOV show this year), among others. Hive brings these groups together to perform mini-pieces that allow the audience to travel through a venue, making pit stops at each selection. So what’s so special about site-specific

34 Vancouver International Fringe Festival

Award-winning theatre artist Kendra Fanconi of Vancouver’s dare devil, site-specific theatre company, the Only Animal, leads an on site workshop in creation of site-specific performance. On Site will empower writers and performers with the framework and tools to make a site-specific theatre piece on Granville Island. Participants will choose a site and engage with it to envision a piece that could take place there, perhaps during next year’s Fringe. The workshop will culminate in a discussion of the nuts and bolts of funding and producing site-specific work. work that traditional theatre doesn’t capture? “It creates a sense of event, a happening, and because of this, site-specific theatre reaches new audiences. There’s theatrical potential in buildings, landscapes, and public spaces, which of course can never exist inside a theatre. And it causes people to interpret these overlooked spaces in new ways. They take on a kind of magic,” Collier explains, “and people want to see their city, the place they live in, in a way they’ve never seen before.” Of the 30 BYOVs at this year’s Fringe, 11 are site-specific. With shows in apartments, on a pedicab, at the planetarium, the Police Museum, and in cafés, you’re sure to find one to pique your interest.

Colin was the most practical person at solving creative problems, yet also the most creative at finding practical solutions, which is why he was so ingenious at theatre production management. The most memorable incident would be me waking up in the Green Room the morning after the Festival’s Wrap Party at the Fringe Club. For reasons I can’t remember, I was only wearing boxer shorts and my staff name badge, but I could hear Colin barking orders to the technicians out the window at our Kingsway and Main offices, and I was thinking, ‘I better get out of here or else Colin and his technicians will employ the tools on their belts to maximum humorous effect; then, take a photo of me so that it could be used as the dart board target in the tech lounge.’ As GM, I didn’t want to give Colin that type of creative morale-building opportunity for his crew.

‘‘

Colin Campbell succumbed to a long fight with cancer on June 25, 2010 and he will be greatly missed by Fringe staff and the theatre community as a whole. Colin helped moved the Fringe from Mount Pleasant to Commercial Drive in 1995 and loved to share single malt scotches with his venue technicians. “He commanded huge respect from all staff, and no one ever wanted to let him down, as you knew he’d come through for the show, company, or you every time,” Harry Hertscheg, the Fringe’s former General Manager, recalled fondly.

A site-specific experience. It’s the end of the world and all we have is a fire escape. What do you do when it’s all going to stop a month from now? Maybe less. Anyway, when have they been right before—and who’s that on my fire escape? Performances happen even in the rain— there’s a Plexiglas roof up there. Mostly drama, could be comedy, definitely no ironing board. Dress for weather.

An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. And a dead man—with a lot of loose ends. This wildly imaginative comedy is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world.

From the creator of Fringe hits Curriculum Vitae (Best of Fringe), Petty Crime (Eye Magazine’s Best of Fest), Like A Virgin (Winner of Ottawa Fringe’s Outstanding Comedy Award) comes an altogether different monologue about what we know, what we think we know, and why we might think we know what we know.
